Georgie Cooper may not be the smartest man alive, but when it came to the people he loved, he was protective of them. So when you showed up at the Cooper residence all beaten up, you were nervous.
About a year ago, your dad lost his job and ended up spending his days and nights drinking his life away. Since then, he'd found a new job, but the drinking never stopped.
As time went by, drinking led to harmless fits of rage to you and your mother hiding away in a room until your father fell asleep. Trying your best to get away from your father, you joined after-school clubs and helped tutor kids.
That's how you met Georgie.
Georgie was failing almost half of his classes, and if he wanted to stay on the football team, he had to get his F's to at least a C. So, he asked around, and everyone he talked to said that besides Sheldon, you were the one to go to. And he did.
Surprisingly enough, you and Georgie got along. The two of you worked hard, and as his grades got to where he needed them, you still kept in touch. You would have lunch with him and his friends, and sometimes join him at the movies. You two even became each other's wingman, with him giving you advice on boys and you vice versa.
All was good until the day you allowed Georgie to walk you home. Being the gentleman he was, Georgie walked you home every day, but the home he was walking you to was actually a few blocks down from your own. You told him that was your house because you didn't want to risk your father finding out that you were friends with a guy.
But today was different. You and Georgie had just left the movies and you both couldn't stop talking about it on your journey home.
"Did you see that alien?" Georgie laughed.
"Yes, oh my goodness. When it first came onto the screen I was so scared," You said, with a soft laugh.
Georgie looked over at you. Still holding the theater popcorn, he popped a handful into his mouth and began making weird creature sounds, which startled you a bit. You jumped and released a scream.
Georgie laughed harder than before and shook his head. "It's so easy," he said, talking about how easy it was to scare you. You teasingly punched him with a long grin before grabbing some popcorn.
Unknowingly, you and Georgie had passed up the house you had told him was your house and were quickly making your way to your actual home.
When you arrived at your house, your smile was gone as you quickly realized your mistake.
"Oh, dang it!" Georgie said, flinging his arms in the air in disappointment. "We passed your house."
You worriedly looked at the door to your house, ignoring the boy next to you. "You should go," you told Georgie as you noticed the living room curtains abruptly shut.
"What?" Georgie asked, confused.
Georgie looked over at you to see that the playful smile that you once wore was replaced with a sunken frown and a look of fear in your eyes. He followed your line of sight to see your home.
"Y/N, this isn't your home. I'm not leaving you to walk the streets alone at night."
Your lip quivered as you continued to stare at the window. "Georgie, go home," you muttered, but Georgie just shook his head.
"Y/N, what's going on. This-"
"This is my home, Georgie! Now please... leave."
Your fear overwhelmed you as you watched a dark figure walk past the window. Georgie looked back at you confused. He knew you wouldn't move until he left, so even though he didn't want to, he did as he was told and left.
He turned and left, only looking back when he got to the end of the street. He looked back and watched as you entered the dark house. An uneasy feeling washed over Georgie, but he continued home, waiting till tomorrow to ask his questions.
———
Georgie had only been home an hour when he heard the doorbell. He ignored the door and continued reading his magazine. He questioned who would be coming over at 10 o'clock at night. His door was cracked open as he heard his mother answer the door.
"Y/N?" he heard his mother ask, slightly worried, making his head poke up from behind his magazine. Georgie slowly stood from his bed as he wondered why you would be here after he left you at what was actually your home.
Georgie walked into the living room and froze.
You stood at the door with messed up hair, a black eye, and ripped-up clothes. Your eyes met his, and suddenly, he understood why you were so scared, earlier.
"Y/N?" Georgie called out your name as he walked over to you. You were shaking, which Mary had quickly noticed.
"Here... let's get you out of the cold and inside." Mary softly grabbed your arm and moved you into their home before closing the door. She led you to the couch and Georgie followed close behind you.
"George!" Mary called out for her husband.
A few seconds later a slightly annoyed George Cooper exited his room. "What," he said, a bit aggressively, causing Y/N to flinch.
"Oh dear," Mary said after seeing Y/N's reaction. "George, grab the first aid kit. I'm gonna put some soup on."
"Why?" George said, confused, stepping into the living room. His eyes shifted from his wife to the figure on the couch. He moved closer to get a better look at who was on the couch. When he saw it was Y/N, George was in shock. "Y/N? What happened?"
"I would like to know that as well," Georgie said, standing behind his parents with his arms crossed. He kept his gaze strictly on Y/N. Georgie was angry. Not at Y/N, but at whoever did this.
"Yes, I would like to know that as well, but can we at least stitch her up first," Mary said before leaving for the kitchen.
"Oh, right," George agreed, leaving to grab the first aid.
With his parents gone, Georgie took the opportunity to talk to you alone. He slowly stepped forward, joining you on the couch. Georgie opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. Instead, you laid your head on his shoulder as you silently cried.
"Who did this to you?" Georgie asked in a soft tone.
On the outside, Georgie was prepared to do whatever to help you feel better, but on the inside, Georgie was angry. He wanted to kill whoever did this to you. You were everything to Georgie. If he could, he'd give you the world.
You closed your eyes and sniffled before answering the boy. "My dad," you whispered. Your cries became louder, making Georgie tense up. Unsure what to do, he placed a loving kiss on your forehead and whispered sweet nothings into your ear.
He did this for a few minutes before George came back with the first aid kit and a wet cloth.
"Okay. It took me a second, but I finally found it," George said, kneeling down in front of you. "Mind telling us what happened?" George asked, as he grabbed her arm and started wiping off the blood.
You hesitated. Just thinking about what happened brought you into a spiral. But Georgie quickly calmed you down by calmly running his fingers through your hair, trying to fix what your dad messed up.
"My dad is an alcoholic," you started. "He has been for a year. And it wasn't until recently that he started getting... physical."
"Your dad did this?" George asked. You nodded, and George went back to cleaning you up.
Mary soon came into the room with a bowl of soup. "Here you go, darling?" She placed the bowl on the side table and stood next to her kneeling husband.
"Thank you, Mrs. Cooper," you gave her a small smile, before continuing. "Anyways, I started joining after-school activities to get away from all the chaos. That's how I met Georgie."
"Wait. So this has been going on since before you met Georgie," Mary asked with a frown. You nodded.
"I didn't want Georgie to get hurt. So, when he asked if he could walk me home, I told him a fake address, so my father wouldn't see him. But today, the night got ahead of us and we passed the house we were supposed to stop at."
Georgie was livid. You were so scared of your father that you lied to protect him. No one should have to avoid their own home.
"We stopped in front of my house, and my father saw."
You paused and suddenly, more tears started flooding your eyes. You tried to speak, but your throat felt tight. Georgie rubbed your back and calmly waited. It took you a minute, but you were finally able to talk again.
"I made sure Georgie left before going into the house, where I knew he was waiting for me. My dad can be unpredictable when he drinks and I didn't want him to attack Georgie."
You wiped your eyes as you kept your gaze down toward your lap.
"When I entered he was just sitting there in the dark... Waiting. When he started talking to me, I knew by his soft voice that I would be in trouble, so I did exactly as he said and answered all his questions truthfully."
You paused, taking a deep breath.
"He grabbed me by the throat and called me a "slut". But it didn't stop there..."
"Oh, lord," Mary muttered to herself.
"When he finally let go of me, he punched me so hard that I fell to the ground. Then he climbed on top of me and began to rip up my clothes. He said that if I was going to be a slut, then I needed to look the part. As he tore up my clothes, I could feel his nails ripping into my skin, hence the scratches."
You paused again, sobbing into your hand.
It took everything in Georgie not to go to your house and teach your father a lesson about treating girls, especially daughters, but he kept his composure.
"I tried to scream for help, but no one came. I saw my mom standing in the doorway, but she didn't do anything. She just stood there... watching. When my dad was done, he dragged me out of the house and locked me out. That's when I decided to come here."
"Oh, you poor thing," Mary frowned with a hand over her chest. She moved toward you and pulled you out of Georgie's arms and into hers. She held you tight as you sobbed loudly against her shirt.
"It's really terrible that you had to go through all that. You don't deserve that. No one does," George said, throwing in his two cents.
Georgie stood from his spot on the couch. "I wanna kill him!" Georgie said, making his way to the door, but he was quickly stopped by his father's grip on his arm. "We're not killing anybody," George said, but that didn't stop Georgie from wanting to go over to your house and beat the living daylights out of your father.
"I think it's been a long night for all of us, so we should all get some sleep. I'm gonna grab some blankets. Georgie, you want to help get the couch ready?" Mary asked, giving you a smile.
"Actually, can I sleep with Georgie? I don't feel comfortable being alone."
Mary was unsure if letting you sleep with Georgie was the right move. She looked over at George, who just shrugged, and then back at you. You looked so sad, and Mary just couldn't say no to someone who's been through all that.
She nodded and sent you another sad smile, which you thankfully returned. "Georgie, take Y/N to your room, and i'll be in their soon with some spare pajamas and blankets. I want to talk to your dad about something."
Georgie's eyes widened, "You aren't seriously thinking about sending her back there, are you?"
Mary was taken aback by her son's outburst. "No," she shook her head. "No, I would never say that. Just go help Y/N so your father and I can talk alone."
Georgie let out a huff, not in the mood to go back and forth with his mother. "Come on, Y/N," He beckoned you to follow him, and you did just that without any hesitation.
———
You entered Georgie's room and made a quick B-line to his bed. You carefully removed your shoes and lay down. It was safe to say that after the night you had, you were exhausted.
"I know it's a mess, but I wasn't exactly expecting company," Georgie said from across the room. He picked up some of his clothes from off the floor and threw them into an empty hamper. When he was done, he turned to see you knocked out on his bed.
Someone knocked at Georgie's door, making him flinch before turning to see who it was. Mary stood at the door, still wearing that same smile from earlier as she held onto a folded blanket and nightgown.
"I just came to drop these off," Mary spoke in a slightly hushed tone.
"I think you're a bit late for that," Georgie responded, pointing back at you as you slept soundly in his bed.
Mary nodded. "Okay, then I will just leave these right here," she placed the folded blanket and piece of clothing on the corner of the bed next to the bed.
"Thanks, Mom," Georgie smiled, making Mary's smile grow wider.
"No problem, honey," she said before making her way out of the room.
With his mom gone and you sleep, Georgie quickly got ready for bed and joined you. He lay on his back, staring up at the ceiling.
"I swear. Next time someone even thinks about hurting you, I won't hesitate to kill 'em." Georgie knew no one was listening, but he still continued express his feelings toward you.
"I love you," he said to you, leaning over to place a kiss on your forehead before turning off the lights and falling asleep.

The family dont know who she is (just sheldon bcs they are in the same university and she is very smart), but one day georgie takes her back home to hang out as friends and the family falls in love with how kind smart and charming she is and they are like: "this is the one for him"
Your writing is wholesome 😚

Sometimes when you look at someone you like, you get this feeling of time slowing down around you but fast forwarding to the moment you imagine yourself with that person. That feeling is what Georgie experiences when with her. Y/N L/N. There are many beautiful girls around the world, but nothing can compare to her.
She’s beautiful in his eyes, no matter what setting they are in, whether it is dark or not. She glows in his eyes. When it’s bright, she’s the cause. When it’s crowded, she’s the only one he sees. When they’re alone, nothing else matters. Needless to say, Georgie will always be proud to admit that he is down bad for this girl, and yet he couldn’t find the courage to do it in front of her.
It is no secret that Georgie is not particularly the smartest one in the family; however, that does not mean that he is dumb. He’s smart in his own way. Everyone is. It’s always comforting when she tells Georgie that he’s not dumb, as other people put it. In her words, she is "book smart” and the boy is “street smart," to which the latter agrees since Y/N does not go outside much.
There’s more ways to enjoy herself in the comfort of her home, more specifically in her room, where all her books and experiments reside.
That’s why she was left confused when she found herself at Dairy Queen with Georgie. How he convinced her to hang outside, she doesn’t know. Clearly it was one of Georgie’s talents to be so convincing. Partly, it was because Y/N couldn’t say no to the boy.
“After graduating high school, I just go to Dr. Sturgis’ class for the hell of it.” Y/N explains while scooping up some ice cream, “My parents are trying to convince me to go to a university and finish my studies altogether; honestly, they just want to brag to our relatives that I graduated college at such a young age.” She furrowed her eyebrows while letting out a bitter smile. “Don’t get me wrong, I love my parents, but I don’t want to rush into college, y'know? I just want to take a break from studying, but I gave them a chance to let me enroll in Dr. Sturgis’ class, but only in his class so technically, still not in college.” Y/N laughed slightly before turning her attention to the person she’s with.
Georgie nodded his head at times when Y/N was telling her story, and the girl noticed, “I’m sorry, I’ve been talking about myself; how about you? What’s the latest news going on with Mr. Georgie Cooper?" The girl smirked smugly at the boy in front of her, making the said boy chuckle nervously.
“Nothing much, really.” Georgie shrugged, not knowing what to tell, “Just the usual, religious mom, coach dad, carefree meemaw, chaotic little sister, know it all little brother, y'know the normal.”
Y/N laughed at his description of his family. Nothing is normal with the Coopers, that’s for sure, but that’s what makes them so unique in a way that the girl wants to have the pleasure of meeting them. And because of that, she blurted out, “They sound fun; it’ll be a joy to meet them personally.” She not-so-subtly hinted to Georgie, who stopped scooping his ice cream.
“Why? "Georgie squinted his eyes confusingly, not really understanding why the girl wanted to meet his family.
Y/N shrugged, playing with her spoon. “Nothing really; I just want to meet them. Is that okay?" She then asked, losing confidence in her voice, which, again, the boy noticed.
“It’s okay, just don’t let them freak you out.”
"Oh, please, how bad can they be?”
・‥...━━━━━━☆☆━━━━━━...‥・
“Y/N, what were your thoughts in Dr. Sturgis’ class today? I think it was motivational. Then again, it’s not like I don’t know what the contents of his lessons are anyway.” Sheldon arrogantly bragged as he walked alongside the older girl. Although he did not know he was being arrogant, it’s just the way he presents himself to people. And Y/N has come to terms with that.
Y/N decided to humor the younger boy as they walked outside the university. “Well, I think Dr. Sturgis made a mistake during his lecture.” Sheldon looked up at her, confused with his face all frowning. “What do you mean by mistake? I’m sure I would have recognized the mistake that Dr. Sturgis made.”
The girl was about to answer when they heard a car honking, startling Sheldon in the process, before they both noticed it was “Georgie!” Y/N exclaimed, a huge smile on her face seeing her friend. She ran up to the car as the boy got out of it to open the passenger door for her.
“Ma’am, your service awaits.” Georgie pretended to tip his imaginary hat. “Why, thank you, kind sir," while Y/N attempted to mimic a British accent, almost doing it perfectly.
“Georgie?” Sheldon asked, confused as he walked to his older brother’s car, "What are you doing here? Where’s Meemaw? Will you be the one taking me home? ”
Georgie sighed a bit annoyed. “Meemaw is a bit busy right now, so I volunteered to pick you up, also because Y/N will be joining us for dinner.”
“Huh. Well, that’s delightful to hear.” Sheldon opened the backseat door, waiting for his brother to come in before speaking again. "Delightful, as in Y/N joining us for dinner and not you picking me up.”
“Would you like to walk home? ”
“No.”
“Georgie!”
・‥...━━━━━━☆☆━━━━━━...‥・
“We’re home!” Georgie shouted once they came inside the door of their home. The Cooper household, it was nerve-wracking for Y/N to experience this kind of situation. She didn’t grow up with that many friends due to her isolating herself most of the time. But there’s a first time for everything.
Sheldon, after pestering Y/N with what mistake Dr. Sturgis made in his lecture, went to his bedroom to drop off his briefcase, but not before telling Y/N that “This isn’t over, L/N.” Y/N raised an eyebrow at the walking boy before turning back to the nearing footsteps.
Mary came face-to-face with Y/N, not being familiar with her. “Hi, I’m sorry. Who are you?” She asked, not wanting to be rude but wanting to know this stranger inside her house.
"Oh, where are my manners?” Y/N offered her hand to the woman, giving her a beaming smile. “I’m Y/N, Mrs. Cooper. I was invited by your eldest son to dinner, but now I figure that you weren’t informed of my presence here in your humble abode.” The girl then turned to Georgie, who shrugged with a smile on his face. “I wouldn’t want to possibly intrude.”
Mary waved a hand in the girl’s direction before shaking hands with her. “Nonsense, darling, I’m happy that Georgie made friends with a gorgeous girl like yourself, and you may call me Mary.” The woman then led them to the dining table, not noticing that Y/N elbowed Georgie once her back turned to them. The boy crouches in pain, not before seeing Y/N’s overly sweet smile.
・‥...━━━━━━☆☆━━━━━━...‥・
“So you mean to say that you go to the same classes with Sheldon at the university?" Missy questioned, interested in the new girl placed between Sheldon and Georgie. “And you survived being with him? Oh, I like you.”
Sheldon looked offended by his sister’s insult before looking content with their mother scolding the twin girl.
“It’s not much of a challenge anyway; I like Sheldon’s wit. It amuses me.” Y/N laughed at Sheldon’s arrogant expression.
“Do you have any religion, Y/N?” Mary asked hopefully. So far, she really likes the girl between her sons; the woman thinks that the girl is the one for Georgie.
Y/N nodded, swallowing her food before answering, “I was born and baptized a Christian, as my family is all Christians.” Mary, after receiving the answer, smiled widely at that, looking at George, motioning her head toward the girl excitedly.
“You mentioned that you graduated high school? At what age?” It was now George’s turn to ask; they were all taking turns getting to know the girl, and by that, it meant questioning her.
“Yes, Mr. Cooper. I actually graduated high school when I was 13. And now, I’m thinking about when I’m going to enroll fully in a university to get my degree. I haven’t really thought about going to college any time soon; basically, Dr. Sturgis’ lectures are just hobbies in a way.”
“And what exactly is your relationship with our Georgie here?” Connie finally asked what most of them were thinking, casually drinking a beer. Y/N choked on her pasta, with Georgie patting her back gently and offering her water, which she took. The boy noticed his family eyeing his actions toward Y/N; he sent them an eye roll.
“We’re just friends, Meemaw," Georgie answered, fighting back the urge to confess his feelings right there and then. But he figured to take this more privately than out in the open with his family present. That doesn’t really scream romantic to him.
Y/N paid no mind to his answer and rubbed her thumb on the back of his hand, smiling at him. "Thanks, darling.” She was grateful for him taking care of her when she was nearly dying earlier. “Don’t mention it, dear.” Georgie smiled back.
They didn’t notice the eyes on them, as they only saw each other right now. Needless to say, the family found the one for Georgie Cooper. He did too.
“I still don’t recall Dr. Sturgis’ mistake earlier.” Well, it was good while it lasted.

2023 Fanfic Summary
I posted 10 new fics this year, finished 2 fics from previous years, and I have 5 unposted.
I started the year by finishing a few WIPs. Specifically,
The final installment of my Rook Gets the Omnitrix AU series
A continuation of my ATLA fic The Spirits Threw Down Their Spears And Watered Heaven With Their Tears
I then wrote a few oneshots:
Synapses, a Big Bang Theory/Young Sheldon platonic soulmate au
Death Comes In Threes, an ATLA fic focused on Zuko's reactions to Lu Ten, Azulon, and Ursa's deaths
I Want You In My Life (But Not Like That), an mcu fic about Clint and Natasha's (queerplatonic) relationship
We're Not Star-Crossed, another ending to Puss In Boots: The Lass Wish. Soulmates!
Around April I said I wasn’t going to write any more fanfiction and instead I was going to write some original works but that didn’t happen because I was then immediately consumed by Submas and began writing a Hisuian Zoroark Ingo fic.
Masking (complete), the main fic. Ingo becomes a Hisuian Zoroark and returns to Unova
Whoops, We Forgot To Tell Iris (oneshot), an unused epilogue to Masking
Boss, Warden, Alpha (oneshot), another unused epilogue to Masking
Destructive Interference (incomplete), a spin-off to Masking where Ingo gets caught by Rei
Between finishing Masking and starting Destructive Interference, I wrote two other fics:
Immortality Is Hard On the Mind (complete), a submas fic where Volo befriends the twins before Ingo's disappearance
We're Not the Monsters of Your Dreams (incomplete, unposted), a Submas werewolf/vampire/monster AU of PLA.
Some other things I wrote/worked on during the year:
Who Am I?, a oneshot for that new Superman cartoon except Superman is trans in this one
Hypoxia, a short (ATLA) Mailee Hanakaki AU
Currently untitled Miraculous oneshot (unposted) where Gabriel doesn't make the wish in time and instead tells Adrien everything
Currently untitled/unposted longfic Miraculous/MCU crossover
I also continued to work on the fourth (fifth?) rewrite Naruto/Young Justice crossover fic that I have never mentioned on ao3 or tumblr but has been in the works for nearly five years and I still have no plans to post it anytime soon
By my estimate, this is around 230K words.

Hey, it's me again! I loved the update for 'Dragon's fire' and can't wait until the next one shot. I was wondering if, in future chapters/oneshots, there will a Mara and Arthur one shot set before they had william and Rosie? :)
I also wanted to ask if you plan on writing 'Young Sheldon' for Claire and Sheldon? I've recently started watching it and I love it! I think it would be cool to see Claire be added into the series, maybe explaining how they met and how their friendship started and grew?
Of course, it's completely up to you whenever you decide to write it or not, but if you change your mind and do want to write it, I wouldn't mind helping out with ideas!

Hiya! :) I’m so glad you enjoyed the chapter :)
There may not be a one shot like that, only because that story is more to look at events that happen after the main series closed, but that’s not to say we won’t have a few chapters where it’s just Marayna and Arthur ;)
I’m not sure about Young Sheldon just yet. I feel like it would be interesting to do as a spin-off, but I also haven’t been able to get into the show as much as BBT and I’ve learned from later series of DW that it can make writing a story hard if you’re not into the show :/ I might take one or two events and make them a sort of more detailed thought or memory for Claire or Sheldon as the main series goes though.
I don’t want to say it would never happen, because I might rewatch the series and enjoy it more at a later date, which has happened with other shows I didn’t think I’d write for, but so far I don’t have plans to pick up Young Sheldon for the series :(

HGPC 17 - 21 | Koi to Producer 2 - 6 | Appare 5 - 8 | Fugou Keiji 4 - 6
...only just realised I was missing some tags. They should be there now or soon.
HGPC 17
Why do I get the feeling the Sawaizumi family will be held hostage one day…? (Maybe I’m just being negative?)
The episode title mentions Chiyu by name, so I wonder why the translation didn’t…
Customer service! You can’t get away from it, even in COVID times…! (Impressive!)
Hmm…you can actually read part of the booking for the Smiths in the book if you know the kanji.
I thought the Smiths would speak in English, but they actually speak in fluent Japanese if the word “susume” was any indication.
Ah, Sukoyaka sweet buns! (from the other episode about the festival)
HGPC 18
Don’t burn down your house with scented candles, kids!
Also remember to use your knees when lifting heavy boxes! (<- says a charity store volunteer, who does this stuff on the regular)
These days the mascots usually have a human form. I wonder if this is implying that particular direction…? (I woke up today and was craving a certain oneshot I’d read during my scanlation days…if it is, it would fill that niche nicely.)
I wonder if the kids will recognise this Ashita no Joe parody…?
HGPC 19
“…since you were young?”
Oh! Element of Wind again!
Koi to Producer 2
This almost feels like Victor is assigning a school project to Protag-chan…it’s a bit sad, really.
It’s nice they let Protag-chan have a personality.
It’s fine if you can’t read the katakana, but Gavin’s name is Haku in Japanese, so it throws out the immersion somewhat…also, I know I shouldn’t be complaining – I’m the target audience here – but do these guys look kinda similar or what…? (partially kidding)
High school sweethearts, huh? “Childhood friends” is my favourite angle of a romantic relationship, but it gets so overused by harems it comes around to being boring…!
I-Is this Stand My Heroes…?! (LOL…?)
Can we not with 1st person cam…?
As cute and dorky as this stuff gets…how does Gavin never get found?! Does nobody ever look up in this city?!? (I thought Evolvers were meant to be a secret…?)
GPS tracker? That’s no better than large corporations using your location data…Isn’t that creepy…?
Hold on, when did she get his phone number? You would assume it was before this entire chase after the boy happened, but still…?
LOL, the English on the board.
This anime is gonna cause me some frustration, but it gives the good stuff in roughly equal measure. It seems to omit the fact you interact via phone with your bois for intimacy (in the game).
Koi to Producer 3
LOL, that’s so clearly Gavin…
By googling, you find out Uptown and Queens are in New York.
Ohmygosh! Did the creators know I love the trope where only people with superpowers can move in certain circumstances?!
Uh…his name is Kira in Japanese? Did someone read the katakana wrong?
Pictured: Depressed bishonen eating bad pudding. (…That joke sounds better in my head. I forgot what meme I was meant to be parodying there, but I had a meme in mind.)
Lemme guess…this man (I dunno if it’s one of the previous bishies with an identical face or a new one) is looking for MC-chan. *sigh* Update: Yep, just Victor again. To be honest, I don’t like anyone who calls harsh words “their sign of love” – love should be honest and upfront. That’s how it becomes heartmelting.
Koi to Producer 4
Okay, in order, it seems to be hexadecimals, Javascript (you can tell from the “const”), some kind of profiles which are apparently for human lab rats (which seem to have some kind of nonsense filler text), a DNA model and DNA bases (ACGT).
The text on the screen says something along the lines of this being an official broadcast of this man’s arrest and this man was a genetic researcher. Obviously, if I wanted to put more attention into what it meant, I would, but I won’t sweat the details this time (because it doesn’t seem to impact the plot).
The guy’s name is Minor because minor key (geddit?)…that’s my guess.
I started playing the game due to this anime, if you didn’t know, and I unlocked an expert in ch. 2. I thought he was Minor, but turns out his name is Spine (an older man).
The diary, true to form, contains details about either one case or several cases, two involving children. The bottom of the 1st page says “if it’s fake, I’ll laugh”.
Hey, I once told Crunchyroll I wanted an anime about hacking (so is this a dream come true? I reveal all in the next sentence!). Hackers don’t congregate like this…they’d be too conspicuous, even with the secret hideout!
The code in the top left appears to be…C? I think? (Note they declare “unsigned int”.)
Kiro sometimes reminds me of Masayoshi (SamFlam)…it puts a derpy smile on my face.
*blah blah blah I’m Key* - Wuh…? F*** you, Kiro!!! (There is such a thing as piling too much cool stuff on to a character, y’know – I’m guilty of it in my own writing.)
3684 isn’t a very safe password (says someone who once aspired to be in cybersecurity).
What bugs me is that Simon is a perfectly fine name…it’s just a bit boring. Kiro/Kira I get (a bit), but Lucien/Simon…? *shrugs*
Ohh! Based MAPPA! Thank you for making this adaption look great!
Koi to Producer 5
Oh, I got an SR in the game recently and it has a line like, “Only a fool stays up all night to do others’ work. Victor talks like that a lot…
The sign so obviously says “Renka”, meaning “love flower”. “Loveland” really is a step down from that…
Where’s Gavin’s guest badge…?
“Happiness Noodle Store”…?
“…the end of our first year…”
If this weren’t a Chinese work by origin (or Japanese work by translation), I’m sure Protag-chan would have gone after Gavin, despite being told the contrary.
Kanya = Minor. I’ll take a note of that.
One of the books behind Minor says “Gale Start”…hmm…
That GPS tracker is still unintentionally creepy, IMHO.
Koi to Producer 6
…oh. (dejected) Probably a beach episode or something.
What the actual heck was going on with Lucien…? It’s like he was having a tiny stroke there…
Lucien’s power is listed as “???” in the game. I thought he was an aura-reader when he said “show me your colour”, but that shield thing he did means he might just have various psychic powers…? *shrugs* We’ll find out eventually.
Running in heels is hard…
LOL, that’s so clearly recreating a CG from one of the cards.
This is the 2nd time this has gone pseudo-isekai. As much as I like to joke about it…I fully expect someone to be sent to another world at this point.
I couldn’t possibly see Victor on any kind of game show, come to think of it.
Appare 5
This guy’s middle name is “Rich”! That’s silly!
A boombox from the 19th century…makes sense, somehow.
I only just (?) realised Al has a tiny tie on his usual outfit.
Back to the beginning already…just start!
Appare 6
…I just realised Appare mouths “I got it!” in the OP.
Al Lion (sic…?)
Isn’t Sofia in that train…? Update: She might have been, she might not. Hard to tell when they don’t confirm.
This series seriously could’ve done with a dub…Even with weird hokey Hetalia accents, it would be good stuff.
These bunches of people at designated points…reminds me of the book I was reading while in Japan. The Long Walk by Stephen King (part of a compilation). It still gives me shivers down my spine when I remember it.
This “leave in the middle of the night” thing reminds me of the Amazing Race.
“Valley of Despair” is made-up, but Death Valley exists. It’s one of the hottest places on earth, hence the name.
LOL, Kosame scores himself one (1) prarie dog and two (2) Hototos.
I thought Appare was being inconsiderate at first…but he’s being considerate, in his own way.
Oh! I didn’t realise, but Saito Soma is Al.
Appare 7
“It’s not one plus one, but one times one!” – LOL.
Hybrid engine? In the 1900s? Hmm…
LOL, I think Al just did a hadouken.
This stuff’s like an animated Galaxy Brain meme! It’s amazing!
I managed to successfully predict – without watching ahead – Appare would catch himself with his traps.
Kosame with his hair down…is rare. Not exactly attractive because we have to care about the racers rather than lust after them (and the artstyle actually prevents me from doing so, because it’s deliberately quite cartoony), but it’s rare.
Appare is surprisingly childish…that’s what makes him more than a Sheldon Cooper, I think.
The spelling of the place is actually “Ely”, if Google-sensei is any indication. C’mon, subbers! You’re American (most likely)! Can’t you put in the legwork (or the Google-fu) to discover what place in Nevada this is?!
Subbers make characters say “shit” a lot in this show, hmm? (contemplative)
Now this evil guy here *points to screen*…that’s hair I like.
Appare 8
I just love this OP…don’t you?
I like how the steam/gas boat/car has Chinese numerals on its dial.
Kosame means “small rain”, so “heavy rain” is obviously to contrast that.
The Hototo joke never gets old.
I thought I just saw someone leave the saloon…
Nice hair + terrible face = bad equation.
I can almost imagine the wee-oo-wee-oo-ooooooo…wah-wah-wahhh…(You know the one sound snippet, right? The one theme from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - or whatever movie it is – that maybe involves a tumbleweed rolling across the screen, and then a huge shootout? If you don’t know it, play a sample on this Wikipedia page!) playing in the background.
It’s convenient the prarie dog didn’t appear when Hototo (old) had his revenge spree.
I noticed there’s a bit of a mark under Kosame’s left eye…it suggests that he’s been crying (or maybe it shows tiredness from the race…?), but it’s not that noticeable.
So that’s the real Gil…and tose were his henchmen that threatened to hang everyone bar Kosame. Got it.
(notes to self) So, for charting a course with Appare Ranman!, it’s Los Angeles -> Death Valley -> Ely -> Denver -> ??? -> New York. Got it.
Fugou Keiji 4
“Daisuke-sama” isn’t “Lord Daisuke”, it would be “Sir Daisuke”, I think…but “lord” has a proper translation in Japanese.
The truck has a Shinagawa licence plate. Anime really does like Shinagawa, huh? (Based on ID: INVADED and this.)
I think it’ll be interesting to see Kambe handle this without HEUSC.
The board for Sanchome (which is equivalent to a suburb…or a county, I guess?) has posters saying stuff like “take your dog poop home” and “let’s protect the environment!” (technically, it says “let’s protect the region/area!”, but that doesn’t translate right. There’s even a flea market. Still, those posters don’t have any big hints…not that I know of so far.
I kind of forgot that dude was the gardener for Kambe’s house…er, mansion.
I noticed a poster in the kouban says haru (spring) on it. That’s probably the same one that Haru’s name is signified by, assuming that’s not in combo with another character or few.
Oh great…the sister is an overbearing one.
Ahh…he doesn’t like natto. So that’s the problem. Daisuke is childish (like Appare)…Note I don’t like natto either, but I wouldn’t run away from home (or similar) because I was fed natto.
I noticed Kambe uses shinseki (which doesn’t refer to close family). “Relative” is a correct translation of that word, I just wanted to check that word was the right one for the context.
There’s a green tea bottle by the sink…I don’t think I’d mistake that shade of green for anything else.
LOL, I didn’t think we’d actually get to see Kambe with his hair “down”, so to speak. It’s…an interesting look, for sure.
Oh my gosh! It cost him (Haru) $15!!! (LOL, cheapskate…says the cheapskate…*suddenly droops and stops laughing*) Update: Sorry about the sudden downer there. I was having what the kids these days call a “woke moment”…at least, I think that’s how they use that term.
…I’d watch that crime drama. It’s funny.
Just realised Kato has an older model of phone than Kambe does.
This episode was kinda like a Tokyo Sonata kind of thing, huh? The sensational in the middle of the not-so-sensational…”sensational” for this show, anyway.
Those kids look like the ones from Erased.
*lightbulb goes off in brain* What if the dog went to Kambe’s…?
Can Suzue actually hear HEUSC while Kambe is using it…? $2.46 though…that is cheap, in comparison to the ham.
This was the cheapest episode so far (about $550)…probably because it was an insight into Kato’s life, more than Kambe’s.
Fugou Keiji 5
The flag seems to be based on Cameroon’s (which is in Africa, not America) and the “Arita Kinen” seems to refer to Arima Kinen, meaning this episode is set around Christmas-ish. Credit goes to Kambe Zaibatsu on this show.
I-It’s a Humvee!
Polyadoll (sic)…?
The Poliador guy speaks perfect Japanese…(?)
The star! It’s a key thingy!
I thought Kamei was the 1st Division dude with the reddish hair. Turns out it was the blonde…? Update: Redhead is Hoshino.
Ummmmmm…he was reading porn…? Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh…okayyyyyyyyyyyyy…
…oh, the costs for Kambe’s tuxedo are on there. So’s the cost for repairing the bike Suzue rode.
Fugou Keiji 6
I never knew there were so many money proverbs to be used as episode titles…
What is Kambe doing with his hands…? He’s not even using the computer.
Imura seems to use a Windows 10 with Cortana on the taskbar.
HGPC 20
What’s with all the Naruto running this episode…?
HGPC 21

A Young Sheldon Fanfic
Summary: In order to graduate, Sheldon must pass his P.E. class, the only subject Sheldon is not a master at. His brother offers to help. And in the end, earns his father's validation.
A/N: My first fanfic that doesn’t deal with a reader or OC! 🎉
Also, I know nothing about football, so I went off a few sites off of google.
Tumblr media
OLDER SHELDON NARRATION
“P.E.
My greatest failure. You could give me as many english, math, and sciences classes as you desire, and he would thank you. But P.E.? That was like handing me a death certificate with my name on it. It wasn't just because I was small and scrawny. P.E. and I just never got on well.
But P.E. class brought me and my brother together. And my father had been proud of me. I felt a bond between the two men in my life, besides Dr. Sturgis, of course. That was until that semester ended, and I’d be done with P.E.”
Sheldon’s POV
I stood off to the side of the track, watching my life flash before his eyes. In the middle of the football field, inside the track, was a group of boys from my gym class. They were all huddled together, but that wasn’t the only thing I had noticed. I noticed the large dummies the football players used to train and the bag of footballs Coach Wilkins kept at his side. I instantly knew what was to happen.
Coach Wilkins lifted his head from the huddle and looked straight at me. “Cooper! Get over here,” the coach yelled.
“Um, no thanks. I don’t do well with contact sports,” I replied. All it took was one look at my setting for me to remember all the times I was hit in the head by flying projectiles, because I couldn’t, or wouldn’t catch it in time.
After that, my entire world had come to an end when Coach Wilkins said these words, “You know that if you don’t at least participate, you’ll lose participation points, which is most of your grade.” It was quite the conundrum.
My eyes went wide at the statement. I had worked exceptionally hard to maintain my 5.0 GPA, even though my school only went up to 4.0 on their grading scale. Anyways, I couldn’t lose that. So, I did the only thing I could do. I walked onto the field with my head hung low in disappointment.
When I got over to the rest of the boys huddled together, I squeezed between the boys and looked up at Coach Wilkins. “Okay, Class. This week, we're going to be playing football. Today is gonna be easy. We are going over rules, and starting tomorrow, we’ll play a game or two, each day.” Everyone gave Coach a nod, except for me, because I didn’t agree with the things he was saying.
I never understood why P.E. is a graduation requirement. What does being able to run or not have to do with academics. Why can’t it just be an elective like all the other boring and dangerous classes, like workshop? What will I, Sheldon Cooper, need gym class for in my future? Nothing, that’s what.
Anyways, I stayed in my spot, watching the boys walk out to the field. I felt a gust of wind from the girls in my class behind me, running track. I’d rather do that instead of Football. I would just imagine myself as the flash, zipping through the track with my small legs.
“Cooper!” Coach Wilkins yelled out, turning my attention from the girls to him. “I need you out on that field, Sheldon,” Coach said, giving me a stern look.
Sheepishly, I responded back with, “Isn’t there something besides sports that I can do in this class? Maybe I can do your taxes for free this year?”
“No bribes, Sheldon.”
“I’ll tell my dad,” I threaten the coach.
“He told me to treat you like a regular student,” Coach said. His smug look that he wore was saying ‘Ha! Your move!’
“Fine, but don’t expect perfect performance,” I said, angrily.
“All I ask is you participate.”
“Fine, but I won’t be happy about it,” I said with a pout.
Tumblr media
When I got home, I made my way to the only supporter that would back me up in my graduation necessity.
My mother.
My dad stopped the truck and put it in park. I practically ripped the seatbelt off of me and slammed the door open. I hopped out and ran into the house, being met with my mother.
My mother stopped cutting the vegetables she had just gotten from the store and looked at me with concern. “Shelly? Are you okay? You’re out of breath,” she said, walking over to me. She got down to my level and placed her soft hands on my cheeks.
“I was running from dad…” I said, trying to catch my breath. “Which… I’m starting… to think… was… a bad… idea,” i said, wheezing.
“Running from dad? Why were you running from dad?” My mother asked.
“Because in order to graduate, I have to participate in P.E. And to make it worse, dad told Coach Wilkins to treat me as a regular student.”
“But you’re so small, they shouldn’t have you in a physical class,” my mom said with a mixed feeling of concern and anger.
“Exactly! And the first sport is football!” My mother gasped. Now, she’s livid. I could see the familiar vein popping out of her forehead.
It wasn’t long after after that when my father and Georgie walked through the door. My mother stared my father down with her momma bear glare.
"George Cooper Sr!" My mother yelled, startling my brother and father. "Why did you tell Wayne to treat our son like an ordinary student? Shelly is not an ordinary student. He shouldn't be involved in physical activity with those other kids. He's a child! What if something happened to him today?" My mother asked sternly.
My father looked at my mother, flabbergasted by her immediate outburst. He honestly should have known she would react like that. That's why she's my go-to when I need something done.
"I'm sorry, Mary," My father apologized.
"Seriously. What were you thinking?"
"I was thinking that you're right. Sheldon is not an ordinary student. He's quite the opposite. He's the highest in the class, not because of his age or size. It's because he tries and actually puts in the work. I just thought that maybe, Sheldon would do the same with P.E. No matter what he does in that class, me nor Coach Wilkins are gonna give him a free pass. He's too smart for that," My father told my mother sincerely.
I listened to my father's words, and I felt something uneasy. I thought back to my Professor Proton episodes that I watch every day after school. Professor Proton didn't get a free pass to where he is today. Now, I don't know if he was forced into P.E., or else all his achievements would be ruined, but I do know that he put in the work, and he got stuff done.
"George-"
"I'll do it!" I said out loud, cutting my mother off.
"You'll do what, Shelly?" My mother asked me, looking at me with her confused face rather than the angry face she's had on her face for the last 5 minutes.
"I'll do P.E. on dad's terms. But I have no clue how to do anything in that class," I said, slightly nervous.
"Are you sure, Shelly?" My mother asked me with a slight frown.
"Is Professor Proton named as a subatomic particle found in the nucleus of every atom?" I asked with a delighted smile. I looked between my mother, brother, and father, and they all looked at me with blank stares. My smile dropped as I said, "Yes. Yes, he is." After explaining myself, the 3 of them looked at each other with their mouths open in realization.
Georgie raises his hand and suggests to help me. My mother and father looked at Georgie like he was crazy. "I second that. Georgie is the athletic one in the family... besides Missy. But I'll save her for baseball week. Anyways, this week is football, so Georgie would be the perfect tutor," I say.
"Well, since that's sorted out, I'm gonna get ready for the game," my dad says, leaving the room.
Tumblr media
Later that night, Georgie and I went outside so he could tutor me in P.E. It was hard to think of the day that Georgie would be the one tutoring me in something.
“Now, in playing football, you’ll probably gonna be a running back. You’re gonna try your best to run down the field, and get the ball to the end zone. But even if you’re not, you might have to pass the ball off, so that’s what we’ll start with.”
We started off by passing the ball back and forth. They weren't hard or long passes. They were short and soft passes. But that didn't stop me from the ball slipping out of my hands and end up dropping it.
After about an hour, I finally got the hang of it. Georgie smiled as he passed me the ball, once more, "There you go! You're getting it." I smiled excitedly. "I'm really doing it! I'm really doing it!" I exclaimed as I jumped up and down, before passing the ball back to Georgie.
"Okay. Now I'm gonna move around, and I want you to watch my moves before passing the ball. Got it?" Georgie explained. I nodded my head up and down, catching the ball Georgie threw at me.
Georgie ran around the backyard. Following his orders, I watched him and waited for him to get into position to catch the ball. When he turned to face me, I through the ball. Sadly, the ball landed about 5 inches from his feet.
I looked down in disappointment. "It's okay," Georgie tried reassuring me. "You threw the ball a little low, but it was still a good throw. You just need to throw the ball a little higher, next time. That's all. You're doing great," Georgie said, passing the ball back.
Hearing Georgie say those words to me really meant something. My brother had never told me he was proud of me. He always taunted me, but never did he say he was proud. I felt accomplished in the fact that maybe I can play football with high schoolers. It wasn't like it was the real thing.
Tumblr media
After passes, Georgie began to start teaching me about tackles. When Georgie told me this, I almost crapped my pants. I thought this was one of Georgie’s sick jokes, so he could tackle me, and take out. But I was wrong. I was going to do the tackling.
“Alright. Now, when you tackle, your goal is to get your player on the ground. The best way to do that is by the legs,” Georgie informed me.
“Now, I wanna see you try.”
I took a deep breath and ran at Georgie. Right before hitting him, I tried to pounce on him. Sure I hit my target, but I guess that was the wrong way.
“Try aiming for the knees,” Georgie said.
Taking another deep breath, we got back into position. Georgie and I had a friendly stand off before I ran at him. I slightly bent my knees and pushed Georgie off his feet. Georgie let out a small cry of pain, consisting of ooh’s and ahh’s.
“Are you okay?” I asked my brother in concern. Georgie got back up on his feet, wiping himself off. “Yeah, I’m good,” he responded back, easing my concern.
Georgie stood up and began to wipe himself off. “That was great,” Georgie said, giving me a smile, which made me smile. “Now, let’s run that back a couple more times.”
Tumblr media
The next day I was ready. Georgie taught me different ways to pass the ball, and he even showed me some of his plays. He gave me basic instructions on how to score points, tackle, and what fouls were. Georgie ended our tutoring session by saying, "Remember. This is only P.E. football, not real football. Most of the kids know the sport, but they don't know how to play it on their own. Some probably know as much as you before this. But just remember to have fun. It's not for competition."
But sadly, I wasn't ready. Sure, I now knew how to play, but I wasn't prepared for the height and strength of the boys in my P.E. class. I tried to tackle one of them, and they ran over me like roadkill. I now sat in the nurse's office with an icepack on my eye. I could feel my eye bruising, meaning I was getting a black eye.
My father ran into the nurse's office, demanding to see me. When he saw me sitting on the small bed, he stopped in his tracks, appalled at the look on my face. "How'd you get that, Sheldon?" He asked, almost immediately.
I gave my father a blank face, "Playing football."
"You don't seem too upset about that," My dad said with a raised brow. I just shrugged my shoulders and said, "I'm not. I was prepared to play. And yes, I'm sad that my brand new skill went to waste, but that skill didn’t prepare me for the pain that I felt when Ralph Terrence tackled me.”
My dad grimaced at the thought of the abnormally ripped freshman tackling me. “We’ll, I think you’r mother was right. You shouldn’t be in P.E.”
“No!” I yelled out, scaring the school nurse before turning towards us. My dad turns to her and gives her a small smile and wave. She gives me one more look and goes back to her computer. My father places his index finger against his lips as a sign to lower my volume. I take the hint and begin to whisper, “No. I want to do P.E. I mean, I go to church with mom, and yet, I don’t believe in her faith. I don’t like P.E. But why should that stop me. I’ve recently began bonding with Georgie, and I have to say, it felt good. Not the sports part, but the sense of accomplishment.”
“We’ll I’m proud of you. I’ll talk to Wilkins. No physical sports, but you can do warm ups and testing. And you can do homework or whatever while everyone plays. Okay?” My dad asked.
“Okay,” I said with a smile. The feeling of two people that hardly recognize me, being proud of me, was sensational. I was over the moon. Both my father and brother had told me that they were proud of me, in less than one day.
“I don’t have many memories of me and my father bonding over something, or even my brother and I. But, I have to say, it felt good.”

What's your Marvel Starter Pack?
My Marvel knowledge isn’t nearly as extensive as what I have for DC, so this’ll be scaled back to 12 books from the 15 I had there (nevermind Superman and Batman’s own personal lists). Additionally, since Marvel’s even more about Right Now than DC, nothing here is earlier than the turn of the century; a lot of my older recommended reading is by my dad’s suggestion since he had plenty of firsthand experience with the Silver and Bronze ages. Also worth noting that my Marvel tastes don’t exactly fall in line with the general sensibilities of Tumblr or fandom at large - I’m not a big X-Men guy, for instance - so your results may vary. But anyway, again, if you’re following me but new to actually collecting comics and wondering what to look into to gauge your interests, I’ve got plenty for you.
1. Daredevil by Mark Waid
Tumblr media
What it’s about: Blinded as a child pushing an old man out of the path of an oncoming truck transporting radioactive waste, Matt Murdock grew up to become a lawyer, encouraged by his pugilist father Battlin’ Jack Murdock not to rely on his fists as he had throughout life. But when Jack was murdered for refusing to throw a fight, Matt was forced to rely on the talents he had developed in secret under his sensei Stick - the same isotopes that took away his sight boosted his remaining four to superhuman levels, as well as granting him a 360° awareness of his surroundings he termed his ‘radar sense’ - to find justice for his father and those like him, becoming the vigilante Daredevil. Now, after a crimefighting career marked by agony, loss, and an increasingly deteriorating psyche, his identity has been unofficially exposed by the tabloid press…but attempting to turn around both his life and his mental health, Matt’s chosen to try and re-embrace the good in both his daytime career and in the thrill of his adventures as the Man Without Fear.
Why you should read it: Aside from being in my opinion the most influential superhero comic of the decade, Mark Waid’s tenure on Daredevil is the complete package of superhero comics. Energizing, gorgeous, accessible, character-driven, innovative, and bold, it’s a platonic ideal of Good Superhero Comics, and most especially Good Marvel Superhero Comics, and as such there’s little better place to start.
Further recommendations if you liked it: Shockingly, few modern Marvel titles seem to operate on a similar frequency to this run, even among those that clearly wouldn’t have existed without it; of those I don’t mention in one capacity or another below, the only modern books that leap out to me as being of a similar breed are Roger Langridge and Chris Samnee’s (the latter ending up the primary artist on Waid’s Daredevil) tragically cut short Thor: The Mighty Avenger, Dan Slott and Mike Allred’s Silver Surfer, and Al Ewing’s Contest of Champions. Given the classic mood it evokes, you might also be interested in some of Marvel’s older stuff in general - as probably most conveniently packaged in the Essential volumes - as well as the more recent Marvel Adventures line of all-ages titles. For hornhead himself, most of his classic work tends to operate in a pitch-black noir mood that much of Waid’s run is meant to contrast; if you want to delve into it, go to Frank Miller’s run (primarily Born Again), then Brian Bendis’s followed by Ed Brubaker’s and, following Waid, Chip Zdarsky’s (the Charles Soule run in the middle seems largely forgettable).
2. Marvels
Tumblr media
What: Following the career of photojournalist Phil Sheldon - beginning in World War II with the rise of the likes of the Human Torch, Namor, and Captain America, and forward into the reemergence of superheroes with the Fantastic Four - Marvels shows what the battles that define a world look like to the helpless spectators, from the controversy surrounding mysterious vigilantes such as Spider-Man, the fear of the “mutant menace” represented by the X-Men, and the terror when the planet is first truly threatened at the hands of Galactus.
Why: As well as being one of Marvel’s best and most defining works period - this is Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross’s coming out party as two of the most significant names in the genre, and it articulates Marvel’s avowed “it’s the world outside your window!” philosophy better than perhaps any other title - Marvel is ruled by history and continuity in a way DC isn’t. The latter may have reboots to contend with, but Marvel has a much more upfront and consistently significant timeline of what happened when and what’s important, and if you’re going to have to immerse yourself in that ridiculous lore, there’s no more fulfilling way of getting an injection of pure backstory than this.
Recommendations: There’s a follow-up by Busiek, Roger Stern and Jay Anacleto titled Marvels: Eye of the Camera; I haven’t read it yet myself, but given the pedigree involved I can’t imagine it’s anything less than entirely solid. For other Major Marvel Events, the defining one of the 21st century is Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s Civil War, which set a tone that still reverberates through the line; also worth checking out the recent Marvel Legacy oneshot, which seems to be laying the groundwork for things to come. Speaking of setting a tone, while it’s not directly ‘relevant’ continuity-wise, Millar also worked with Bryan Hitch on Ultimates 1 & 2, which proved to be the aesthetic model for the current wave of Marvel movies and added plenty of ideas that have been extensively mined since. History of the Marvel Universe by Mark Waid and Javier Rodriguez fits its title and is absolutely worth a library checkout, but is mainly a rote checklist elevated by all-timer artwork.
3. Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie’s Young Avengers
Tumblr media
What: The heroes of the group once known as the ‘Young Avengers’ have gone their separate ways, each trying to figure things out on the cusp of adulthood. But when Wiccan’s attempt at helping his boyfriend goes horribly wrong - mixed in with a pint-sized god of mischief’s machinations, an interdimensional bruiser’s attempts at routing him, and non-Hawkguy Hawkeye’s extraterrestrial hookup - the gang’s forced back together again and on the run before old age literally swallows them whole.
Why: Here’s the bummer truth, daddy-o: I am not, in the common parlance, down with the hep cats, at least as far as gateway young-readers Marvel books go. I flipped through Runaways and wasn’t compelled to pick it up; I kept on with Ms. Marvel for a couple years but always on the edge of falling out of my monthly pile. Unless it’s truly next-level spectacular or heart-pouring-out sincere, gimme superfolks routing fiendish plots and going on trippy adventures any day over a bunch of sad kids in tights figuring out adolescence all over again: Spidey already did it first and better, and when emotionally-down-to-Earth superhero comics do get me fired up it’s usually set a little later on in life (even when I was the target audience for this sort of thing). But fire it through Gillen/McKelvie laser neon sexytime pop, and suddenly you’re in business. Slick, smart, raw, and wild, this was the best comic of 2013, and’ll certainly go down as one of the best superhero titles of this decade, Marvel as the Cool Kids of superherodom dialed up to 11.
Recommendations: Nothing else quite like this out there - the closest in feeling is Grant Morrison and J.G. Jones’ excellent original Marvel Boy miniseries, though that’s more about becoming a 20-something out in the world in the sense of wanting to burn it all down to the ground - but as I said, Runaways and Ms. Marvel do generally appeal to the same audience (and to be clear, I did like the latter just fine), as do the original Young Avengers run and Avengers Academy. Personally, I checked out and liked Avengers Arena, where all the fun teen heroes got forced into Hunger Gamsing each other on a murder island run by Arcade, followed up by them breaking bad in Avengers Undercover - please note that I’m like one of the three people on Earth who liked this book as opposed to ravenously despising it, which probably has in part do to with my lack of prior attachment to the characters involved. Also, important to note that this book is in the middle of a thematic Loki trilogy, preceded by Gillen’s Journey Into Mystery (which I haven’t read but don’t for a second doubt the quality of), and completed by Al Ewing and Lee Garbett’s truly magnificent Loki: Agent of Asgard; also worth noting that these books, and really modern Loki as a whole, are deeply rooted in Robert Rodi and Esad Ribic’s Thor & Loki: Blood Brothers. And for perfect entry books, I don’t think there’s much of anything better out there, especially for young readers, than Ryan North and Erica Henderson’s The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, one of Marvel’s most consistently high-quality ongoings of the last several years.
4. Hawkeye: My Life As A Weapon
Tumblr media
What: Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, aka Hawkguy, is the Avenger who’s Just A Dude. No super-steroids and vita-rays, no magic hammer or Pym particles, a distinct lack of multi-billion dollar armor or immortality serum. Dude has a bow and arrow, and while he is very, very good with that bow and arrow, he still gets his ass kicked a frankly disproportionate amount relative to his teammates. Between meeting a dog, buying a car, and hanging out with friends - even if each incident goes significantly more wrong that they would for anyone other than Clint Barton, with non-Hawkguy Hawkeye Kate Bishop typically along for the ride - this is what he gets up to when he’s not helping save the world.
Why: Gonna show my heresy again: I’m not actually over the moon about Fraction/Aja’s Hawkeye past the first arc. But that first arc? Man oh man oh man, are they about as good as Marvel gets. This is absolute next-level storytelling on every front, with Aja and Pulido pulling out all the stops and Fraction - who by all accounts thinks more about the process of how comics work than anyone else in the field - just pouring heart and style all over the thing. It’s as tight and energetic as comics get, and the perfect introduction to Marvel’s street-level corner.
Recommendations: Aside from the rest of this run, there’s the recent Hawkeye (starring the non-Hawkguy Hawkeye Kate Bishop) by Kelly Thompson and Leonardo Romero, and there’s a generous helping of Hawkguy in Ales Kot and Michael Walsh’s Secret Avengers, a book as tight and out-of-the-box and oddly joyous in its own way as this. If you’re looking for other Marvel material that gets this explicitly experimental and afield of the house style, go for Jim Steranko’s much-loved work with Nick Fury. And for the other, considerably grimmer side of the street, aside from the Daredevil stuff I mentioned above, check out anything and everything you can get your hands on from Garth Ennis’s work with the Punisher, along with Greg Rucka’s and Jason Aaron’s.
5. Moon Knight: From The Dead
Tumblr media
EDIT: This list was written prior to allegations made against Warren Ellis. It’s your money, but while I’d still recommend checking the book out of the library - the quality of the work isn’t going to change now that it’s out there in the universe - if you’re looking to pad your bookshelf I might recommend skipping to some of the books suggested below in its place.
What: Marc Spector was a mercenary until the day he died, betrayed in the desert before an Egyptian temple by his comrades…and then he kept going. No one knows for sure whether the truth is what his doctors have to say - that sharing his head with the likes of Steven Grant and Jake Lockley is a manifestation of DID, and he’s a profoundly sick man - or his own interpretation - that his fragile human personality buckled and shattered before the immensity when dying by its temple, he bowed his head at death’s door to the moon god Khonshu and let it seize his soul. Whatever the truth, he now knows his purpose: to defend travelers by night from whatever horrors would cross their path.
Why: There’s no story as such to be told here; Ellis and Shalvey simply show six adventures over six issues that establish Moon Knight and the scope of what he’s capable of when handled properly, ranging from straightforward detective work to psychedelic journeys through a rotting dream to a jaw-dropping issue-long fight scene. Marvel has a proud history of material skewing slightly to the left of the rest of their output, tonally and conceptually, and this is your ideal gateway to Weird Marvel.
Recommendations: For the further adventures of Moon Knight, by recommendation would be Max Bemis and Jacen Burrows’ current volume, which is following up on the seeds Ellis and Shalvey laid down quite satisfactorily, with a few twists of their own on top. Ellis himself used Moon Knight before this in his run on Secret Avengers with a number of different artists, which was very much a precursor to his work above in its high-concept done-in-one style; also check out his book Nextwave with Stuart Immonen, which is as out there as it gets for Marvel and also the best comic ever. Delving into Marvel’s spooky side, if this did anything at all for you absolutely get all of Al Ewing and Joe Bennett’s massively and rightfully acclaimed The Immortal Hulk (and if you’re looking for more something more traditional with the Green Goliath, Mark Waid’s The Indestructible Hulk is a hoot). If you really want to go to ground zero of Weird Marvel, you’re in the market for Steve Gerber’s work, primarily Defenders and his own creation Howard the Duck (who had another very entertaining via Chip Zdarsky and Joe Quinones recently worth checking out). Another notably out-there character worth checking out is She-Hulk, particularly in Dan Slott’s run and Charles Soule/Javier Pulido’s. Two more figures existing on Marvel’s weirder end are Doctor Strange - whose ‘classic’ work would as I understand it be Steve Englehart and Frank Brunner’s run, and who’s worth checking out more recently in Brian K. Vaughan and Marcos Martin’s miniseries The Oath, Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo’s run, and Donny Cates and Gabriel Hernandez Walta’s - and the Inhumans - while contemporary attempts to push them have been a failure, there have been excellent individual successes in Ellis, Gerardo Zaffino, and Roland Boschi’s Karnak, Al Ewing and company’s Royals, and Saladin Ahmed and Christian Ward’s Black Bolt. And I’d be remiss in the extreme not to bring up Gabriel Walta and Tom King’s Vision, which I don’t want to give anything away of, but has a serious claim to being the best thing Marvel’s ever published.
6. Ultimate Spider-Man by Bendis & Bagley
Tumblr media
What: When bitten by a genetically mutated spider Peter Parker thought he could use his newfound powers to make a quick buck, and come on, you already know this.
Why: This is the foundational modern Spider-Man. The first arc’s aged a little wonky in bits as Bendis was trying to make late-90s/early-00s Teen Slang work, but by and large, Brian Bendis and Mark Bagley’s original 111-issue tenure on Ultimate Spider-Man reimagining his early years was pound-for-pound one of Marvel’s all-time most engaging, exciting, dramatic, and authentic long-term runs. This is the template for every movie (especially Homecoming) and TV show he’s had in the last decade, a sizable part of what got me into comics in the first place, and one of the company’s most reliable perennials. You want to get onboard with maybe the most popular superhero in the world, you do it here.
Recommendations: With the remainder of the list I’m getting into more character/concept-specific reccs, and for other great Spider-Man, your best bet truly is the classic early material by Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, and John Romita as collected in the Essential volumes, which has aged unbelievably well compared to its contemporaries; Bendis’s post-Bagley material just doesn’t hold up, even with the introduction of fan-favorite Miles Morales. For other ‘classics’, your best bests are Spider-Man: Blue, and by my understanding the runs of Roger Stern and J.M. DeMatteis, particularly the latters’ Kraven’s Last Hunt. For the modern stuff, Chip Zdarksy’s current Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man is just getting better and better, I’ve heard very good things about Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane, I personally enjoyed Mark Millar and (at his peak) JMS’s runs, and while most agree Dan Slott’s soon-concluding decade-long tenure on the character has outstayed its welcome, he’s also turned in some stone-cold classics like No One Dies and Spider-Man/Human Torch, as well as other entertaining work such as the original Renew Your Vows and Superior Spider-Man. Most recently, Chip Zdarsky’s work with the character in The Spectacular Spider-Man and the high-concept out-of-continuity miniseries Spider-Man: Life Story are some of Mr. Parker’s all-time best, while Tom Taylor’s Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is a charming relatively small-scale superhero adventure book, and Saladin Ahmed and Javier Garron’s Miles Morales: Spider-Man is easily the best possible introduction to that guy.
7. Thor: God of Thunder Vol. 1
Tumblr media
What: Though Thor, the god of thunder and mighty Avenger, has faced limitless threats to even divine life and limb over his many millennia, only one figure has ever truly frightened him. Now, as he discovers a serial killer of deities is loose in the cosmos, he must turn to his past and future alike in order to survive the coming of the God-Butcher.
Why: The pick on this list most directly relevant to those coming in from the movies right now, I’m afraid that while a bit of this was plucked for Ragnarok, this isn’t remotely on the same wavelength. This is black metal death opera screamed through the megaphone of wild space-spanning superheroics, and not only is it the best Thor comic, it’s the perfect introduction to Marvel’s cosmic side.
Recommendations: Along with the Loki books I namechecked above, the defining run on Thor (though the rest of his continuing work there is also very much worth checking out) is Walter Simonson, which laid down a lot of the fundamentals of the character as he exists today; along with that and the rest of Aaron’s run, my understanding is that Lee/Kirby’s original run holds up very well. For more satisfying fight comics, I’d also suggest World War Hulk, and I hear Marvel’s early Conan comics were standouts. On the cosmic end, I know the Guardians of the Galaxy are where it’s at these days; they sprang to life in their current incarnation in the much-loved Annihilation, and while I haven’t been reading their current Gerry Duggan/Aaron Kuder run, it’s well-liked and probably a good place to drop on, as would be the recent Chip Zdarsky/Kris Anka Starlord, and I’d personally recommend Al Ewing and Adam Gorhan’s Rocket. Beyond them, Jonathan Hickman’s comics are where it’s really at, from his Fantastic Four to S.H.I.E.L.D. to Ultimates to Avengers/New Avengers to the big finale to his overarching story in Secret Wars; it’s a complicated reading order to figure out, but oh-so-worth it.
8. Iron Man: Extremis
Tumblr media
What: Faced with the horrors of his amoral past and the questions of a future coming quicker than he can manage, Tony Stark faces his most dangerous enemy yet when experimental post-human body modification tech is let loose into the world and lands in the hands of a white supremacist terrorist cell.
Why: More than anything other than Robert Downey Jr. smirking and quipping, this story is the definitive model for the modern Iron Man, taking a C-lister most notable for dealing with alcoholism decades earlier and hanging out on the B-list team in the Avengers (at least until 2012), and redefining his personality, aesthetic, and role in the 21st century as a man who might be smart enough to save the world if he can ever pull together enough to somehow save himself from his own compromises and weaknesses. The road to this guy becoming a household name is paved here.
Recommendations: Prior to this, his biggest stories were Demon in a Bottle, showing his first reckoning with his alcohol abuse, and Denny O’Neil’s 40-issue run introducing Obadiah Stane and showing Stark’s darkest hour as he sinks completely into his illness. Post-Ellis, the big run is Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca, which seizes both on the ideas here and the momentum granted by his Hollywood debut to cement his status as an A-lister; after that check out Kieron Gillen’s, which is not only a fun big-idea series in its own right but paves the way for Al Ewing’s spinoff Fatal Frontier, easily one of Iron Man’s best and most overlooked titles. Finally, while it was derided in its own time (that it was a spinoff of an event that turned him evil but the comic never especially explained the circumstances didn’t help), Superior Iron Man is also worth a look as a horrifying contrast to the rest of these.
9. Captain America: Man Out Of Time
Tumblr media
What: A sickly young man who volunteered to participate in an experimental super-soldier program to serve his country in World War II, Steve Rogers became Captain America and protected the world from the Nazis with unimaginable courage and distinction, until the day he died disarming a drone plane rigged to blow aimed at America’s shores. He was honored throughout history…until the day he was found alive by the Avengers, frozen in the Atlantic and ready to emerge into the lights of the 21st century when needed most. Most people know that story. This is the story of what happened next.
Why: The search for the definitive statement on Captain America is one that’s driven his character for decades: after all, handling him doesn’t just mean talking about one man’s character, but the character of a nation. Successes are typically qualified, but one of the more successful creators in the pool is Mark Waid, who’s up to his fourth time at bat with Steve right now on the main book. His own most notable effort however is here, showing Rogers’ earliest days post-iceberg as he adjusts to living in what is to him the far-flung future, seeing the ways the nation has both surpassed his wildest dreams and fallen short of his humblest expectations, leaving him in the end to make the choice of whether this is truly the world he wants to defend.
Recommendations: As I mentioned, Waid’s had a few times up at bat with Captain America, and while he initial 90s stints might not be ideal for new readers for a number of reasons, his current run with frequent partner Chris Samnee is a solid crowdpleaser and a perfect place to jump onboard. Prior to that, worth checking out are Jim Steranko’s bizarre and transformative 3-issue run, Steve Englehart’s legendary Secret Empire (not the recent contentious Marvel event comic, to be clear), Ed Brubaker’s turn of the character towards grounded espionage, and his co-creator Jack Kirby’s bombastic, passionate 1970s tenure on the Captain. Currently, Ta-Nehisi Coates’ run is quite solid. Regarding related characters, for the Winter Soldier I’d suggest Ales Kot and Marco Rudy’s unconventional cosmic thriller Bucky Barnes: Winter Soldier; Black Widow had her own recent and excellent Mark Waid/Chris Samnee run, and I’d also recommend the one-shot Avengers Assemble 14AU by Al Ewing and Butch Guice, and issue #20 from Warren Ellis’s previously mentioned time on Secret Avengers; for Black Panther, his definitive runs are under Don McGregor and Christopher Priest, and I’d also note Jason Aaron and Jefte Palo’s Secret Invasion arc as showing T’Challa at his best.
10. Fantastic Four By Waid & Wieringo
Tumblr media
What: Bathed in cosmic radiation on an ill-fated journey to the stars, Reed Richards, Sue and Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm were transformed, and became the Fantastic Four, first family of an age of heroes! Now, years into their careers and with Reed and Sue’s young children in tow, they continue to explore new frontiers, whether battling a sentient equation gone mad, contending with an extradimensional roach infestation, or perhaps most perilous of all, Johnny trying to deal with getting a real job.
Why: Plenty consider the Fantastic Four one of Marvel’s most difficult groups to get right, but Waid and Wieringo nail the formula here as well as anyone ever has, just the right mix of high adventure and family dynamics to draw just about anyone in; this is as crowdpleasing as comics get and the perfect introduction to the best superhero team out there.
Recommendations: The FF’s another group where it’s worth going back to their earliest days of Lee and Kirby; while much of the writing’s aged awkwardly at best, they’re the absolute foundational comics of the entire universe and lay down concepts that are still getting use today throughout that universe. Past that initial run, John Byrne and Walter Simonson’s are among the best by reputation, as well as Jonathan Hickman’s as I discussed before (Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch’s is worth tracking down as well, especially since concepts there end up feeding directly into Hickman). For more outside-the-box material, Joe Casey and Chris Weston’s First Family is worth a look, as is Grant Morrison and Jae Lee’s 1234. And for the all-time best showing of bashful Benjamin J. Grimm, the ever-lovin’ blue-eyed Thing, find Marvel Two-In-One Annual #7 to see him defend the entire planet in a boxing match at Madison Square Garden. And while the team’s sadly off the table at the moment, Thing and the Torch are returning in Chip Zdarsky and Jim Cheung’s new volume of Marvel Two-In-One as they set out to find their missing family.
11. Mighty Avengers by Al Ewing
Tumblr media
What: When Thanos takes to the skies as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are off-planet, it’s a day unlike any other, as those left standing are forced to band together as the Mighty Avengers. And as the danger passes, the team remains, looking to truly work alongside those they protect rather than above them to make things better, even as forces conspire in the background to enslave them all.
Why: This title is something of a limitus test, in that it’s one where you’ll have to deal with it being constantly, infuriatingly forced to deal with crossover nonsense. It’s one of the big prices to pay for engaging with a larger universe, but the trade-off is that this is where Al Ewing gets set loose on the Marvel universe, drawing on every weird corner to pull together a run of genuine moral intent, note-perfect character work, and all-out adventure. This may be the ‘secondary’ team, but it’s as perfect as the Avengers have ever gotten.
Recommendations: The title itself is relaunched as Captain America and the Mighty Avengers, and as that ends but Ewing continues his time at Marvel, the characters and concepts end up divided among a number of titles: Contest of Champions, where a number of heroes are plucked from the timestream to duel for the power and amusement of the Grandmaster, New Avengers (later turned U.S.Avengers), where former X-Man Sunspot assembles a new team to act as a James Bond-ified international strike force, and Ultimates (later turned Ultimates2), where some of Earth’s most powerful and brilliant heroes band together to proactively defend against unimaginable cosmic threats; also try his mini-event Ultron Forever with Alan Davis sometime. Based on your response to numerous aspects of those titles, there’s a good chance you might be in the market for David Walker’s Luke Cage titles, Matt Fraction’s Defenders, and Jim Starlin’s cosmic 70s books such as Captain Marvel and Warlock (and make sure to read Nextwave at some point, Ewing actually follows up on that gonzo delight in some surprising ways here). For the ‘main’ team, aside from Hickman’s previously mentioned run - which while spectacular is pretty far afield of the usual tone - some suggestions might be Kurt Busiek and George Perez’s much-loved run, Roger Stern’s Under Siege, I have to imagine given the pedigree of the creators Earth’s Mightiest Heroes by Joe Casey and Scott Kolins, Brian Bendis’s extended ownership of the Avengers books, and The Kree-Skrull War.
12. Wolverine & The X-Men by Jason Aaron
Tumblr media
What: Dwindled down to a few in a world that hates and fears them as much as ever, mutantkind has been split in two, with by-the-books Cyclops taking a hardline approach against oppression and feeling that the youth in the X-Men’s charge must be made ready to fight, while Wolverine has grown tired of throwing children into battle and has left to find a new way. Founding the Jean Gray School For Higher Learning, Logan’s found himself in the most unexpected role of all as a professor, fighting just has hard to keep the unimaginable high-tech academy and the hormonal super-powered student body in check as to fend off the supervillains inevitably sent their way.
Why: The X-Men aren’t exactly my forte, with a wobbly batting average at best over the years as the books devote at least as much effort to trying to juggle the continuity and soap opera demands as the actual sci-fi premise. There have been successes though, and few so geared towards new reader engagement as Wolverine & The X-Men, where Aaron strips the franchise down to the base essentials of a team living in a school for super-kids. It’s poppy, it’s weird, it’s touching, and it’s accessible. It’s the X-Men at its best.
Recommendations: The most direct predecessor to this run (aside from its actual lead-in miniseries X-Men: Schism, which is actually worth checking out) is Grant Morrison’s New X-Men, which takes the sci-fi aspects of the concept to the very limit in what I’m inclined to consider the best X-Men run, though it’s proven controversial over the years among longtime fans. The base of the team as it exists today is in Chris Clarmemont’s work, which I’m not wild about myself but has a few hits such as God Loves, Man Kills; if you’re looking for a modern update on the formula developed there, Astonishing X-Men by Joss Whedon and John Cassaday is probably your ticket (and the follow-up run by Warren Ellis is a great weird paramilitary sci-fi book for a bit). Jonathan Hickman’s relaunch is a radicaly and brilliant departure paving a new way forward; it’s perhaps best experienced after a bit of ‘traditional’ X-Men to understand the scale of the contrast, but check that out as soon as possible. For classic material, I understand the Roy Thomas/Neal Adams run was an early success, and Jeff Parker’s X-Men: First Class is by all accounts a charming look at the team’s earliest days. Jason Aaron’s work elsewhere on the X-Men proper was limited to the first 6 issues of the short-lived Amazing X-Men, but he had a very extended and successful tenure on Wolverine which would be my go-to recommendation for him; past that, Death of Wolverine actually satisfies, and All-New Wolverine starring his successor Laura Kinney was the best X-Men book on the stands for some time (writer Tom Taylor is also had a short-lived ‘proper’ X-book in X-Men: Red). As for the group’s many spin-offs, I’d suggest Rick Remender’s X-Force, Peter Milligan and Mike Allred’s X-Factor/X-Statix, and Joe Kelly and Ed McGuiness’s Spider-Man/Deadpool, which should serve as a decent introduction to the latter dude’s own oddball territory in the franchise along with the truly mad and utterly delightful You Are Deadpool.

——————
It was a normal Tuesday morning for the Cooper family. Mary could be found in the kitchen making both breakfast and lunch for her children and husband, while everyone else struggled to get ready. Sheldon was once again looking for his bow tie that he knew he didn’t misplace, and Missy sat back and watched in amusement as she also insulted his everyday look. On the other hand, Georgie and George were in a screaming match with each other one the bathroom. You see, Georgie was doing his hair (and you know that takes a hot minute), but George was over patiently waiting for his son.
“Boy, you’ve been in there for over 15 minutes. If you don’t get your buy out here-“ George said before being interrupted by his son. “Relax dad. I’ll be out in a minute.” George groaned at Georgie’s words before he was once again knocking at the door.
Mary would’ve helped the situation, but theirs was everyday. If Mary stopped to help her family everyday, there would never be any time to get breakfast and lunch finished. But something else held up Mary’s morning. Something new.
Ding! Dong!
It was interesting because no one ever came to their house I’m the morning, on a school day. Mary was quick to walk over to the door. She opened the door to see Y/N Y/L/N standing there with that sweet and innocent smile on her face and a covered pan of what smelt to be cookies.
“Hello Mrs.cooper!” The girl kindly said as her smile grew slightly larger.
“Hello- Y/N was it?” Mary asked the girl. She nodded her head, continuing to smile.
You see, Mary didn’t know the girl, but everyone in town knew about the girl. She lived a few blocks away which was strange because School started in an hour. But everyone knew her for her reputation. She was the lead singer in the church’s choir, and in every performance she wore the best. When she wasn’t at school or church, she rode horses on her grandparents farm and became horse riding state champion four times straight. But that didn’t help Mary understand why she was at her house with freshly baked cookies.
“I’m sorry for asking this, but why are you here?” Mary asked, confused.
“Oh, well, I made these for Georgie. I woke up early to make these for him.”
As soon as the girl said “Georgie” Mary saw the blue cowboys jersey the girl seemed to be wearing. She immediately knew what was going on. A smile erupted on Mary’s face as she realized the crush the girl had for her son.
“Oh, well, that was very sweet of you. I will be sure to give them to him.”
“Okay. Have a nice day, Mrs. Cooper,” the girl said, walking back towards her house.
Mary went back into her house to find George going into the kitchen. She ran up to her husband and gave him a pay on his shoulder to get his attention.
“George. George. Look,” Mary said pointing to the still warm plate in her hand.
“What? Cookies? Don’t mind if I do,” George tried to take one but Mary was quick to move the container away from him.
“No, George. There for Georgie.”
“Georgie?”
“Yes, Georgie. He has an admirer!”
“Who? That Y/L/N girl?”
“Yeah. How did you know about it?”
“Because she comes to Georgie’s practices and games, cheering him on. She even does it when he’s on the bench. You know, she would make a great cheerleader. I also noticed that those innocent clothes she normally wear’s isn’t so innocent,” George says, grabbing a beer.
Mary gave her husband a look before seeing her children with their backpacks on and ready for school. Mary and George shifted a little and went back to their day.
—————-
“Hey Georgie!” Y/N said, waking up to Georgie’s locker.
“Hey Y/N, did you enjoy the game last night?” Georgie adopted the girl.
“Yeah! No matter how many times you were tackled, you still were amazing out there. The Wolves are no one doubt gonna win championships,” Y/N spoke with a beaming smile.
Georgie gives her a confused smile. She was oddly positive about championships knowing that they lost last night… And every game before that.
“Yeah,” Georgie paused. “Hey, listen, I've got this chemistry homework that is kicking my ass. Do you think you could solve the last couple of problems for me?”
“No,” she thought, watching Georgie grab the paper from his backpack.
Y/N looked at Georgie bewildered. “U-uh. Yeah- I mean. Sure-yeah, I'll solve it for you, she stuttered.
“Sick! Well, here. It's due 8th period, so can you finish it by lunch? Oh, and make sure to get a couple wrong. Don't want them catching on.”
Y/N nodded.
“Cool, well I gotta go. See you later! Oh, and your Jersey is really nice,” Georgie called out from the middle of the hall.
Y/N sighed. What did she get herself into?
-----------------
“So, he just handed you his homework?,” Wanda, Y/N’s friend, asked from across the lunch table.
Y/N sat in her seat with a pout on her face as she poked the mysterious blob on her tray. After a couple of minutes, the motion wasn't as satisfying anymore. Y/N moved the tray to the side with a sad moan. She looked to the right of where her tray once sat to find the finished chemistry homework Georgie had asked for. In disappointment, Y/N let out another sad moan before laying her head facing down on the table, so the only thing she could see was her feet.
“Hey, your man is walking over here. This is your chance to redeem yourself by asking him out,” Wanda spoke up, making Y/N quickly lift her head.
She looked behind herself to see the oldest Cooper boy walking towards her. Y/N couldn't help but stare at his features. His mullet-styled curls. His glistening blue eyes. The list could go on, which was exactly why the girl started freaking out.
“You’re gonna be good, girl. Imma give y'all some time to talk,” Wanda said, getting up from her seat.
Y/N took her eyes to find Wanda walking away. “No. Wanda. No, you can't leave me here.” It was no use. The girl was already out of the lunchroom.
“Hey, Y/N,” a familiar Texan voice rang out behind her. Y/N turned back to find Georgie standing behind her. He took a seat right next to her, making her close her eyes in order to control herself. “I was wondering if that chemistry assignment was finished.”
Y/N’s eyes flew open, “No- i mean- yes! Yes, it's done, but…” Y/N sighed. “Georgie, I like you. I like you more than a friend. That's why I baked you cookies at 4 a.m, I wore this jersey, I did your homework. I didn't know how to tell you, so I tried to apply myself to your interest. I don't like football. I like horseback riding. But you like football, so…”
Y/N became worried when Georgie didn't speak. His face stayed the same, causing Y/N’s nerves to spiral. All of a sudden, Y/N couldn't handle it anymore, and so she ran. She ran and hid in the girl's bathroom until the bell for everyone to be in class rang.
---------------
Y/N ended up getting called home by the nurse because she said she felt nauseous. Her father drove her home as she silently stared out the window in regret.
Regret for saying something to Georgie.
Regret for doing those things for Georgie.
Regret for Falling for Georgie.
She thought it was a mistake to be falling for the hottest boy in school. She felt that she was a fool to think she actually had a chance with him. She should have just listened to her mom and continued to be her.
----------------
Y/N now laid in her bed, looking out the window as she watched a car pull up in her driveway. She had never seen the car before. She got up from her spot to see George and Georgie Cooper sitting in the car. Y/N stayed out of sight as she watched them speak to each other.
Eventually, Georgie got out of the car alone. He walked up to her door at the same time the doorbell rang through the house. Y/N slept right above the front door so she heard everything.
Her mother opened the door in shock to see the Cooper boy standing on their porch after today's events. Not after Y/N cried into her mother's side until she fell asleep from exhaustion.
“Good evening, Mrs. Y/L/N. Y/N left early, so I was hoping she was okay. We had a talk earlier and I don't think I did the right thing,” Georgie spoke. It didn't sound rehearsed. It sounded genuine. Y/N decided to listen more closely.
“Wow! That was really sweet, but I don't think Y/N’s feeling herself right now. Maybe another time,” Y/M/N said.
“Oh. Well, could you give her this when she does feel better?” Georgie said.
There was a slight pause before her mother spoke again. “Sure thing, Georgie. You have a good night, now.”
“You too, ma'am.”
That was all Georgie said before Y/N heard the door close. She watched out the window once more to see Georgie get back in the car. He spoke with his father once more before their car pulled out of the driveway. Georgie looked up towards Y/N’s window, and then looked into each other's sad eyes before the Cooper's vehicle was completely out of sight.
Hearing the stairs start to creak, Y/N quickly got back in her bed and under the covers before fake sleeping. Her door opened. Footsteps sounded from the floorboards before a dip appeared next to the girl on her bed.
“Are you feeling better?” her mother asked, staring at the wall across from the bed.
There was no response.
“You probably heard Georgie talking downstairs.”
Still no response.
“I'm just gonna leave the note he left on your desk.”
That was all she said before walking out the room. Y/N stayed asleep for a couple more minutes to make sure the coast was clear. She left her bed and grabbed the note off the desk.
The note read, “Dear Y/N,
I'm sorry for how things ended. Start over? Here's my number.
(541)-***-****
-Georgie
P.S. I like you too ❤️
Y/N smiled at the note. She was finally getting her chance. Now, another problem arose.
What should she wear to visit the Cooper residence?
