To Catch Fire

Arcade Napier (Arkadia) Creative Art Course Final Project

Turn your past into wings, and soar over what you once knew to be yourself. Everything is a story if you spin it right. Don’t let what has come to be weigh you down, let it slide off like an old scab in the shower. It may seem like it is out of reach but the fire you once had still burns. You are young. Or maybe old. I can still hear the faint crackle coming from your heart as the embers dance. Catch the Fire. Don’t settle for any less than you deserve. Become who you were meant to be, not who you were or are. Light others flames as they sputter. Heat rises, and so should you. Catch The Fire.

Details of Importance:

·         The word “LIVE” is spelled out in the rope like viscera

o   This is not to be read as the opposite of “Die” but should be taken in the way as Carpe Diem or YOLO.

§  Don’t Settle, Catch The Fire

·         The symbols on the cone in the background spell out “Catch The Fire”

o   This is both a reference to Sonia Sanchez’s inspiring poem by the same name and another nod to the philosophy I try to convey in the piece.

§  We all carry a fire, the same fire that built the world we live in, we must choose to use it for good or the world will never change.

·         The Horizon line is very thick, this was done to convey how hard it can be to push through the fog that is who you have become, all of your flaws and strengths hold you under.

o   To break through to the surface where a flame can grow is a unique and rather viscous journey.

·         I wanted to paint a rainbow in the sky as they are a fairly universal symbol for joy, I don’t know many people who get sad looking at a rainbow.

o   However I deconstructed the colours and turned it into the sky that is in the painting now.

§  This is to further accentuate the theme of change and growth, you burst through a bloody and somewhat dark past into a bright an colourful one.

·         The Candle, which is holding the flame is now able to emerge into the open air where it will not be put out by the blood.

o   The flame was always inside you
