MHA 399 leak reactions
We’re left hanging on All Might vs AFO and I think that’s a good thing. It gives us time for a few more subplots to converge.
I’m loving the AFO mouth vore stuff. We saw that earlier in this arc with him and with TomurAFO:
Tumblr media
At the start of the chapter, All Might had referenced all 1-A students except Aoyama, Hagakure, Momo/Creati, Bakugo, Jiro/Earphone Jack, and Mineta. I think we can include Shinsou too. :)
Toshi could also have moves that mimic Izuku’s other quirks like Smokescreen, Float, or some smashes? But I don’t think he’d have equivalents for Gearshift, Fa Jin, or Danger Sense?
I was excited to see what Mouseketool Toshi asked Toodles Anima to go fetch for him. Laser is the answer, and it makes perfect sense. (Btw, if you don’t get that reference then you haven’t been near a toddler in the US in the last decade….or seen this meme):
Tumblr media
We switch POV to Aoyama vs Kunieda in the Takoba parking lot (which is near Sero, Ojiro, Sato, and 1-B’s Tsuburaba (Solid Air), since they are inside the arena, I think against Gashly??). I’m not entirely sure how a flower villain is kicking ass when Aoyama has a laser beam quirk but okay! Glad to see Aoyama learning from the licensing exam and letting his quirk go as hard as he could. IIRC, last time Iida had to sit with him and talk him into one last laser blast.
FATGUM. NO!!!! My (other) beefy blondie had better be okay! I mean, it was pretty clear his quirk wouldn’t do well in this matchup, so that part isn’t surprising, but I like him too much for him to have his nutrients sucked out and turned into a flower with his face (?!?!?!?) It’s all the body horror of hanahaki but without the love part or the self-flagellation over whether to confess. Just the pain.
I love how AFO brings literal darkness over Toshinori, only for Toshinori to say “Hey bozo, you forgot that light bends and can be reflected and refracted.” And then we see Aoyama and Hagakure do exactly that before we cut back to Toshinori standing up naked metaphorically in the snow. He doesn’t have to huddle over the OFA fire anymore— it’s not for him to protect by himself at this point in his life. He’s still there stoking the flames, his soul burning in service to others, but he can embrace other kinds of light now too. He’s gonna fire a freakin’ laser beam into the darkness. Like Stain told him:

Alrighty guys. It’s time once again for me to discuss AFO and his “feelings”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
First and foremost: it’s quite disappointing how many fans discount anything to do with AFO. There’s some unbridled anger that seems to be derived from a love for another character(often Tomura/Tenko) which is a shame because these people are missing out on some amazing context clues, possibly on purpose, because they don’t want to acknowledge the possibility that AFO isn’t a one dimensional villain.
At the beginning of MHA, the same could be said of All Might. He seemed to just be a one dimensional hero until we started to get his backstory. That’s when he became relatable and no longer just All Might, but Yagi Toshinori. AFO is supposed to be his antithesis, so it would actually be strange if AFO didn’t have something that made him relatable as well. For All Might, it was a student teacher bond and the experience of him having lived a life as a Quirkless individual(like Deku).
AFO is evil, but how does one become evil? Is an individual born that way or does circumstance cause them to embrace something that is considered evil by everyone else. Prime AFO(the now regenerated original AFO) has spoken briefly about why he does things and it seems to point in that sort of direction.
In the flashbacks to AFO and Yoichi, AFO makes excuses for his actions as bringing “order”, an obsession reiterated by TomurAFO. When speaking to his brother, AFO never states he is evil. He even makes it clear that what his followers have done wasn’t by his own hands, so there is no blood on them. Obviously, we know that isn’t really true, but the man is trying really hard to make his brother, and perhaps himself, believe it is true. What’s interesting is that AFO has embraced the title of “evil” in the present time. What changed between the past and now? Hmm….
With the excellent flashback Hori gave us in the last issue, we are presented with a sad AFO. So much so, that the tears don’t stop even while he kills the 2nd user. Just through art, there’s a fury there. One so deep, that AFO is eerily calm. The most dangerous he could be. Why is he crying? It’s fairly obvious: the only thing that could invoke such an emotion in the “Demon King” would be the death of his brother. Though long ago now in terms of the MHA manga, the one time we get a hint of humanity from AFO is when he states that he loves Yoichi. A being like him loving anything is already quite a feat and, of course, there’s been both outer and inner dialogue concerning his brother ever since. AFO considers OFA itself as “little brother” and his obsession with taking it back means a lot in the story.
This is because, for a villain that wants to rule the world, the only power that could counter him is OFA. However…he’s obviously allowed every prior OFA user to transfer the power, even though he killed them all(except the 4th if I remember correctly). We can theorize that he may not have known very early on with 2nd and 3rd and even 4th that what is left of Yoichi resides within the power, but he attempted to take the power from Banjo and En. It is those interactions that seems to have propelled him to the ultimate plan of molding a body with hate so strong he can overpower OFA’s will. AFO allowed the users to give the power away before killing them as doing so otherwise would “kill” what was left of Yoichi. It would be incredibly easy to just kill these users WITH OFA still a part of them as that would take away the ultimate threat to his desires. But we know there’s another, deeper desire: AFO wants Yoichi.
Now, let us again reference Darth Vader, the character that is obviously, in some ways, an inspiration for AFO.
Darth Vader was considered the ultimate, badass villain ever…before the end of Empire Strikes Back. Fanzine fanfics, fandom talk, and etc, in the early days of Star Wars shows this. However, Empire Strikes Back does something many regular viewers miss: the mannerisms of Vader, as much of his emotion is derived from body language, shows the viewer that there is much more behind the mask. After revealing Luke’s parentage, his son is able to escape, even with all of Vader’s plans in place. With the Falcon escaping, Vader attempts to reach his son through the force and his words hold a weight that fans at the time may have been confused by. There’s a want there. He is desperate. He’s begging. After the Falcon hits light speed and escapes, Vader’s mannerisms in front of the window of the Executor speaks more volume than words: he can’t believe it. He lost the only thing he has left of a wife he loved so much he gave up his humanity. He turns away then back. Then we have Admiral Piett, expecting to be force choked out of existence, but Vader’s sadness causes him to not even care. It is this introduction of emotion from an otherwise terrifying villain that started to cause the fandom to rethink this character. Mind you, there was nothing else besides this other than the novelizations.
Little things like mannerisms can mean a lot in the long run for villains. With AFO, we are shown his tears, the crying purposefully highlighted by Hori reversing the usual shadowing of AFO’s eyes to shadowing the lower half of his face instead. Hori wants you to concentrate on AFO’s eyes. He wants you to internalize AFO’s tears. They matter.
Now, harking back to my statement about what “makes someone evil”: Vader fell to the Dark Side because he wanted to save someone he loves. This love transformed into obsession and possession as he continued down the black hole of the Dark Side. Anakin was already about Order, but it became an obsession as Order would mean that he had CONTROL over everything around him, something a once slave boy would need in order to mentally survive. The Jedi Order gave him that, for a time, before he became jaded as the love he felt for his wife was considered abhorrent.
So, was AFO’s idea of Order and desire to rule just a whim? Or did he experience an insane upheaval of humanity when Quirks manifested? There was no Order and it probably affected the brothers as they tried to survive in a world turned upside down. Although there is obviously selfishness behind it(same as with Anakin), AFO still tries to rationalize his reasoning as being a means to create Order in the world. However, his brother knows him intimately, as a family member, and can parse through his brother’s words. For someone that probably made Order an excuse for all his actions, this would be quite annoying for AFO.
But why does he readily call himself evil now? Because “good”, because “heroes”, were why Yoichi died. The idealism of them already turned Yoichi against him with what he considers foolish, but it was also vigilantes, heroes in their day, that took Yoichi away from him and filled his head with more idealism. It probably caused Yoichi’s death. With tears presented as such, we can easily accept that Yoichi’s death was not purposeful, but probably a, what AFO considers, symptom of this heroic idealism. So what is one to do when they believe this is why their loved one died? Especially if they can’t accept the fact that their own decisions caused the death in the first place? Blame the heroes. And what is the opposite of the hero? The villain. AFO takes on the mantle of evil, not because he just wants to be evil, but because it’s the opposite of the ideals that caused his brother’s death.
I’m hopeful, especially with this flashback, that we’ll get more of the brothers’ backstory and also a better understanding of why AFO became the Symbol of Evil he is now. I feel that revealing it and examining it would fit more with the messages of MHA than the usual Shonen fair we’re used to.
Thank you for coming to my TEDtalk.
EDIT: In case people missed my post about it…I often do theory dumping when I’ve had a “bit” to drink. So, yeah, you are partly reading the drunken thoughts of a nerdy person.

If the five ask au game is still open: an au where OFA functions more so by activating dormant quirk genes with the newly transferred quirk factor for quirkless people vs giving them access to the stockpiled quirks of past users
interesting...
1- so it isn't immediately obvious that ofa does that, as neither Second nor Third have any other dormant genes to activate. But when Shinomori gets it, it activates the genes for Temperature Inertia, his mother's quirk. (He got Danger Sense from his dad) he spent his hermited life able to at least keep his cup of tea warm and his cooler cold.
2- Banjo got his father's perfect pitch as well as his grandfather's baldness quirk, which let him make other people loose their hair as well as his own. But Banjo chose not to be evil with that, just using his natural BlackWhip from his mom. (except making afo go bald twice, just to.) En unlocked an electric quirk that, combined with his little smoke clouds, made him an absolute threat to computers but also a lil stormcloud lol. Nana had Float active, but OfA unlocked Matchtip, which let her ignite her fingertips so she could add some flaming glovers to her attack. (Gran always called her a meteor)
3- Toshinori had superstrength from his mother's side unlocked, and glowing blue eyes from his father. (i literally went to a random power generator and hit it twice and got 'super strength' and 'vision power' sooo i guess that works here) He trained extremely hard to make those useful, though having some stockpiled energy from ofa helped.
4- Izuku, for his part, activates attraction and firebreath. he ends up realizing that if he tries to attract objects bigger than him, he gets pulled to instead, and immediately starts incorporating that into his combat style, using projectiles, throwing himself around, and breathing fire. unlike Toshinori, who easily adapted to the super strength, izuku isn't built for the fire and so he has to get tech to handle the fire. David and Melissa are happy to provide Toshi with it so Izuku can train and use it in the months leading up to the exam. (what with physical training being slightly less important, he can get it earlier for practice. Toshi did challenge izuku to clear the beach before he graduated high school though, and izuku's determined to do it by the end of his first semester.)
5- since AfO isn't sure how OfA will ever manifest for the next user, he just is monitoring updates to the quirk registration. but there's a lot of that what with people realizing how their quirk actually works and changing it, so he doesn't find Izuku's name until the start of the school year when he realizes All Might's teaching first years, and he goes through 1A and 2A's rosters to see who's had a change in registration. so when usj happens, izuku's more ready to fight with his quirk(s),,, but Shigaraki was also told to watch out for him, and given a list of the first year quirks.

Twenty Day Challenge - Day Thirteen
Tumblr media
Burnout, exhaustion, so on and so forth.
Tumblr media
He has gotten so used to pushing past his limit.
Honestly, if it weren't for the forced time limit from his fight with AFO, he probably would've kept it up.
But by that time his private life (what little was left) had fallen totally apart.
Beating AFO/being injured by him actually gave Toshinori some of his life back, if that makes sense.
Still struggles with feelings of being burnt out/overused on the regular.
Will go home and disassociate for hours.
He doesn't even realize- he'll just sit down on his couch and stare.
When he starts training Midoriya, this starts to fade.
He starts actually living while at home again.
Thanks to his Hero work he didn't exactly have a lot to do at his place, so his apartment (and 'All Might's home') is spotless.
No posters, but there are some drag marks on the wall from years of leaning against it when he came home.
Then he joins U. A. and meets Fin and everything.
Just starts living more and more.
Not for work, but for himself.
Literally revives this man from an early (by his standards) grave.
If it weren't for Midoriya and going to U. A. he probably would be nothing but a literal husk still.
When exhaustion and burnout do hit he tries to power through, but it's getting harder as he gets older.
Exhaustion is so much easier to deal with than burnout.
His coworkers (and his soulmate) sometimes force him to take a day or two of personal leave.
This man's energy is random, these days. One day he'll feel like he could run a marathon, the next...cannot get up from bed.
Tumblr media
Big case of 'gifted kid burnout' after they graduated HS/their brother was finally arrested.
Forgot what it meant to really 'live' after they were transferred to Japan.
Felt like they lost all agency in their life, what little they'd managed to get.
Just fell into a near-blind state of working.
If it weren't for the cat they adopted (Prism) when they moved, they might've lost it entirely.
Will actively work even if they feel like absolute shit.
Has shown up to work while horribly ill multiple times (only to be sent home).
The last (and final) straw for Thirteen was one of Fin's two fainting incidents- when they fainted in the bathrooms just outside one of the sites, Thirteen had them sent home (driven by one of the few coworkers who learned where they lived).
Often doesn't have the energy for their side-projects, it's not hard to tell they have abandoned projects because the sketchbooks/journals hidden under their blankets are stuffed with ideas.
Always leaves work exhausted.
Often takes on the work of their colleagues when said coworkers are tired/under the weather.
Doesn't realize how work-centric their life has become until they start talking to the kids/meet Yagi.
As time goes on life starts to feel--- more colorful??? More like living.
Confuses them so much but they just go with it.
Takes a while for them to realize that they have the energy to do things again- instead of just sliding through the motions.
How they managed to act so peppy at work while feeling empty is beyond them.
Has what they like to call 'shut downs' and 'lock ins' when they get too stressed/expend too much energy (more than they have).
Shut Downs - It feels like their brain just- shuts down. No thoughts, they just stare blankly. Don't move if prompted. Don't react. Might cry if someone makes them laugh. Quiet mumbles at best, any noise/interaction/etc. feels like knives in their head. They feel emotions a lot more intensely during a Shut Down, and can more easily be provoked to a facial reaction- but that's about it.
Lock Ins - Their mind is still going just fine, usually happens right after a Shut Down. Their body stops responding to any and all external stimuli. Can't move. Can't speak. They might get stuck making a repetitive motion or uttering the same phrase over and over until it becomes gibberish (not to be confused with one of their panic attack symptoms). All the while, their brain is fully functioning and aware- they can think, but it's like they can't get their mind to force their body to move or act. They're trapped in their own head until a Lock In breaks on its own. Similar to a Shut Down in that any amount of stimuli outside of the smallest thing feels absolutely horrible.
If they push their mental energy beyond a certain limit, Fin will enter into a Shut Down- followed by a Lock In. They cannot control this, and often will retract/hide from others if they can, when it begins.
If both are exhausted/burnt out...
They don't really do much, honestly.
Might lounge in bed, brushing each other's hair.
At best there might be LoFi music playing at Fin's request.
Might sit and watch the view outside the window together.
Literally just-- nothin'.
They're chillin', let them be.
Comfortable silence if there is no music/LoFi.

Hi! I love your stories for Toshinori; you have such a good undertanding of his character and actions! I wanted to request something, if possible and you are comfortable with it? :) Okay so, Reader is in an accident, and she ends up in the hospital injured. They call her emergency contact; which is indeed Toshi. From the moment he hears she's injured, he forgets about anything else and basically runs into the room scared for her and so worried he's almost sobbing
pov: to be loved by All Might
genre: fluff/angst
Nobody said it was easy,
no one ever said it would be so hard
-Coldplay
highly advisable: read while The Scientist by Coldplay is playing in the background.

When Yagi, no— All Might rather was on duty, he'd treat everyone fairly. No special treatment whether you're a politician, or a street vendor, he'd save them all. No prioritization when he's strong enough to save them all. Laughing light-heartedly to make them at ease. That everyone is safe now that he is there. That's All Might. Despite his injury after his winning against AFO, he persevered to keep being the Symbol of Peace because everyone needed him still.
RINGGGGGGGG!
"AHA! Do not be alarmed! That is my phone. Rest assured, everything will be fine for I am here!"
All Might drops the man and woman gently on the asphalt, handing them over to an emergency responder. The woman stole a squeeze up on his waist, and a grope on his abs. "Thank you, All Might!"
He flashes a grin, proceeding to answer his phone.
"Am I speaking to Yagi Toshinori?"
"It is I!"
". . .  All Might?"
He coughs, covering his mouth and hunching over, while walking to a corner to speak in his usual voice. "This is him speaking. I'm sorry about the TV, All Might was on."
"Oh." A pause. "I'm calling because you are listed as emergency contact of. . ."
---
The sight of you lying in the bed makes his heart stop. The hospital lights make your skin pale. Not chalk pale, but the lighter than your usual complexion. There are big dark circles under your eyes.
He calls out your name. His voice is hoarse and stained. The nurse gives him a hopeful smile and reaches out to touch his shoulder to give a drive-by comfort. "I'll be right outside if you guys need anything."
He still hasn't stopped crying ever since he got here. It was just a road rash. The driver that almost hit you backed out of the driveway without signalling or even looking. Just straight backed up. Thank goodness Hawks was nearby and he got you out of the way in time with only abrasions on your leg to suffer. That was nothing to worry about. But here he is worrying non-stop. Your heart is still so fucking soft from just the fact he was here almost immediately. You thought he wouldn't be here, not that this ever happened before, but you assumed with him being the Number One Hero, listing him as your emergency contact was just a gesture. You didn't expect his presence. You only did it because you wanted him to be informed first and foremost out of anyone in your life.
He calls out your name again. His voice louder, but is still sounds impossibly sore.
"Come here, Toshi."
He doesn't move, instead he lowers his face so you can't see his blue eyes. He sucked in the sound of his sobs,  but the tears still dribble down his cheek in silence.
"Toshinori."
He takes a deep breath and sat down in the chair next to the bed. You put your hand out and he grabs it.
You finally noticed why his face looked different. "What happened?"
He moves his face to make a frown. You could practically see his muscles aching under his skin. The skin around his eyes looks so dark and bruised, as if someone punched him repeatedly in the face. "Nothing," he answers. "I was careless."
You were about to say something but you felt so sleepy that your eyes had closed and your breathing steadies. You've fallen asleep. He sits there for a while, his left hand holding right. He feels creepy watching you sleep, but he can't help it. He's scared that if he takes his eyes away from you, you're going to disappear.
Your chest rise and falls. You looked so frail. He can't help but be afraid of anything happening to you.
---
How does it feel to love someone in impossible circumstances? Not because they're terminally ill, not because he and his other half are made to be enemies in a cheesy romance manga. For Yagi, it goes like this: seeing the one he loves and his throat is dry and tight. It is when you can't stand for him to stroke your head or hand because you feel inadequate, that you were such an inconvenient to him. It was silly. This was something he would happily do as your boyfriend. Hasn't he done enough to reassure you that you are never a bother to him?
And it goes for days of you freezing him out when he snaps, "Will you stop sulking like a brat? Whatever I did, I'm already sorry."
"How can you say sorry when you don't even know?" You snide.
He sighs, pouring hot water for your coffee which he slides to you on the kitchen counter of his apartment. "Then tell me."
"No." You ignore the coffee, shaking your head and crossing your arms as you leaned back on the stool. "I don't want to be a burden THE All Might."
"So this is what's all of that attitude about? Being All Might?"
"Attitude? You know what I'm gonna say it. I'm sorry if hearing this hurts you but I hate that you're Number One Hero. I hate that you're the Symbol of Peace. I hate that my boyfriend is a hero."
"Then—"
"Let me say this first, Toshi, before I go back to being the goody-goody that I was. I wish I had a boyfriend I could speak my mind to but I can't. Wanna know why? 'Cause he's the Number One Fucking Hero: All Might! I'm not supposed to inconvenient you, I can't be a burden to you, I can't tell you anything that might worry you because as your partner I am not supposed to make things hard for you. BECAUSE everything is already hard for you as the Symbol of Peace!" You screamed. "Aaaa. Fuck. I wasn't–" You wipe your face with one hand in a calming gesture,  and then you raise your gaze to meet his again. "Forget it."
"No." His voice quivered, a hint of anger. "How long have you felt this way?"
You shrink at his question. "It doesn't matter."
"How long?"
". . .  a while."
"Is that— why didn't you say anything before? Am I forcing you— does being with me make you feel like you're not allowed to say anything because you're obligated to. . . " Toshi trails off as he figured it out. "Mirai said something to you. Just say it. Fucking say it."
"I WANT YOU TO NOT CARE ABOUT ME!"
"What?"
"Mirai said you got hurt because you as my emergency contact was called. You got hurt because of me. I don't want to be the reason you got killed."
"I was careless–"
"You were distracted! By a fucking phone call and had I not listed you as my emergency contact then—"
"It wouldn't make me feel better."
"But you would be safe! Safer, at least. Understand this, Toshi. I don't need you. I can't need you. Everyone needs you. I can't be like everyone else. But at the same time, I want boyfriend who I could unapologetically be inconvenient to. Without repercussions. That him being off duty doesn't equate to Kami knows how many citizens whom he could be saving. But you're not."
"I'm sorry." He walks toward you and stopped. "I'm sorry."
"No. I'm the one who's supposed to be sorry, Toshi. I should be able to accept everything that comes with you being All Might. I just thought it was just a matter of being in love with you." You whisper sadly.
"Me too." Then a long silence. It could have been half an hour of just breathing. You staring out at the window. Yagi staring contemplatively, eyes burning. "Break up with me."
"No—no. No. No. No." You stumble to stand towards him, fisting his white shirt when you're near him. "No. No. No—no. You can't— I'm okay, Toshi. I can take this. I can take it. I'm okay. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm just so tired. But I can take it. Don't break up with me because you think it's good for me. Don't fucking make me like I am everyone else. I don't want you to do things for me. I just want to be here for you. Please. Toshi. I just—"
"—I want us to be like everyone else." He catches your arm, even though you recovered your balance. If anything, he was holding it tighter.
"I just need to breathe." You reached up with your other hand and lightly touched his hair. Brushed it out his face.
"I'm supposed to make things easier for you," he said.
"No, you already do that to everyone."
"I have to make things easier most especially to you." There were tears pooling in his eyes and slipping down his cheek. You started to wipe them away.
"Please, Toshi. No."
"You told me I have the right to break up with you when I told you it would always be up to you on when our relationship ends. You didn't want to take that right away from me because everyone else already took so much. My time. My mentor. My life span."
"Not like this. Never like this. Break up with me for your sake. Not mine. I won't accept anything else," you whispered quietly.
"I felt the same way, you know? I felt like I owed it to you not to say anything when I got hurt  because if it weren't for me, you would be living a normal life and dating a civilian guy would be easier for you." He wraps his arms around you.
"Says who? At least you don't treat me like shit." You buried your face to his neck, wiping your cheek.
"Why does it seem like loving you makes everything so much harder?"
"Ouch?"
"You're thinking of it too."
"I know. If I didn't love you, I wouldn't feel like I should accommodate you. Or spare your feelings because I treasure you, and then it would result to tiring myself out and building resentment and being spiteful of how unconventional our relationship is. I'm really sorry. I don't want to break up with you."
"I understand it, you know. Breaking up seems to be the only way. Every fight we had,  I keep thinking, how can we recover from this? How do we move on from this? Too many things were already said and it's easier to just break up since we can't mend anything. And then. . ."
". . .  we talk. Like now. And everything's better even though we didn't fix shit."
"Hory shieteu."
You laughed, his curse in english thickened by his accent always gets you. "We're going to fight over this again."
"You can always inconvenient me. That's part of being yours."
"I don't want to take you for granted."
"Why, you waiting for when we're married to do it?"
"Yikes. Too soon. We both know that's never gonna happen."
"You still mad at my job as All Might?"
You roll your eyes. "Whatever, not like I could do anything about it anyways."
There is a burst of smoke infront of you. He transformed to his hero persona. "But you could have mad make-up sex with I, All Might!"
You burst out laughing. "It's Dad Might to me, Toshi."

AN: Idk man, this felt. . .  something. 🙂 I just want to write breaking up with Toshi over and over. Like in all relationships no matter how healthy, let insecurities fan out, anxieties seep in, espresso depresso serve. lowkey i want to write smut.

**bnha spoilers** I'm just sat here with renewed realisation of what All Might is going through. 40 years. /40 years/ he held and refined that power and dedicated his every waking (and sleeping if Vigilantes is anything to go by) moment towards the goal of defeating AfO and creating a society in which people could feel happy and safe. And now as it turns out AfO is still alive, society is broken and he has given a literal piece of his soul to this young boy leaving himself with only phantoms
Yes. I don’t think people quite grasp what all he’s going through.
It’s been shown recently to us that some, if not most, heroes have underlying ambitions in becoming a hero. Whether for money, glory, fame, popularity, doesn’t matter. They’re ultimately in it for themselves. Toshinori’s intentions from the beginning have been the most pure- he wanted to be a symbol that people can look to and know things will be ok. A symbol of hope. This boy was only around 14 years old when he decided this. What kind of 14 year old sees the world that clearly? Sees that people have no hope, that a veil of darkness covers them. The only thing I can think of is- Toshinori did not have a good childhood. Something had to have happened to a boy that young to stop seeing the joy in life so early, and see the world’s flaws. Truthfully, I believe he was an outcast- due to his quirklessness. Most likely an orphan, perhaps abandoned by his parents, as we’ve never seen him have any family. I do truly believe Toshinori has been alone all his life. I don’t doubt more could have happened to him as a child before he met Nana.
Tumblr media
Some may argue that Izuku is the same age, and therefore it shouldn’t be that hard to see why Toshinori wanted to be a hero at such a young age. BUT, Izuku had someone to look up to, ever since he was a child of four years old, to inspire him to be a hero his whole life *cough cough* All Might. Izuku also was quirkless, much like Toshinori, and an outcast because of it (hence where I assume Toshinori was much the same). But ultimately, Izuku wanted to save people because he saw his hero do it. It really wasn’t until Izuku was a bit older, has been in UA, has been on rescue missions, has seen what the heroes see, that I think he’s truly realized how dark the world really is. Toshinori didn’t have that. He didn’t have someone to inspire him as a child, someone to look up to, a hero to inspire him to help others. At that time, heroes hadn’t become as popular as they are in present times. Toshinori saw the world for what it was, on his own, at a tender age. I think that day Nana ran into this blonde hair kid, she eyed him up, noticed his scraggly form, looked into those captivating blue eyes, and saw a man who’s lived through the world’s horrors- experienced the worst it has to offer-, and wants to save everyone he can from the same fate, all in a 14 year old boy.
Tumblr media
Then after only a few short years with the woman he saw as his mother, she’s killed in front of him because of his own weakness- he wasn’t strong enough yet to protect her. The only other person his life, Gran Torino, literally abused him. He beat him to a pulp, taking his own emotions out on a teenager, and I doubt Toshinori said anything of it. He probably thought he deserved it. He’s still afraid of Gran Torino to this day, remembering the beatings and expecting more for his failures- even if he doesn’t know what they are surely he’s at fault for something, but he’s the only person who’s stood by his side for this long. Even while at a distance, and spouting nothing but criticisms along the way. But Toshinori had to put aside his own emotions to be that hope for everyone. He left everything he knew to go to a new country on his own, to learn how to be a hero, to be that hope for someone.
Tumblr media
Vigilantes showed us just how hard he worked. Toshinori literally stayed awake with no sleep for days on end- 3 in the chapter I’m referencing- because people needed help, people needed saving, and no one else stepped up. He fought villains, rescued civilians, repaired damage, cleared rubble, (even accept and eat food that was against his dietary restrictions after his injury) whatever the public needed, all while draining himself further. He worked himself to the point of exhaustion because he had no help, once literally falling asleep while mid-leap across the city because he simply could go no further.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^^These happen in succession of each other^^
No one stepped up to say “Hey, Mr. Number 1, you’ve been working hard lately. Let me help you!” No one tried to take over his position. Even the Number 2 hero, Endeavor, never tried to take some of his burden. His only goal was to try to be better than All Might in terms of power- he was never trying to be the hero that the people relied on All Might for. Everyone relied on him when things looked grim. He was the back up plan. And all of this happened before Toshinori’s injury.
Tumblr media
The only thing he ever wanted to do- help people- he can’t do (at least the way he’s always known how to). The ability to save people has been taken from him in the most gruesome way. He was finally able to fight the man that killed Nana, and in a rage that I’m sure echoed with all of the emotions of the previous users, he smashed that man’s head like a grape. But not without consequence. Several organs are gone. The pain is excruciating. He wears that man’s mark on his body for the rest of his life, never truly able to rid himself of the filth.
Tumblr media
Then we have Nighteye’s betrayal. The man that helped him as a sidekick, the man that grew to be his only friend. Now some people may ask why Toshinori flipped like he did to Nighteye looking into his future when he was concerned about him making it through his injury. What I believe is Toshinori didn’t want to know when he would die (and really, who does). Now he knows he’s on a time limit, knows the clock is ticking. Time is running out to keep the world at peace, and with him as he is now, how long can this go on?
Tumblr media
I think the betrayal, doing something that Toshinori specifically asked him not to do, is what hurt the most. How can he trust Nighteye anymore? He already can only count on one hand the people he can trust, let alone befriend.
Tumblr media
He’s wasted away into a skeleton, a shell of the man he used to be. He can’t over exert himself without his only lung bleeding in protest. It’s canon in the side books that he really doesn’t eat much, which isn’t good for his diet without a stomach now (he’s supposed to have several small meals a day). He is quite literally punishing himself by starving. (Granted, he doesn’t feel hunger anymore.) He’s a sick man, beyond medical help at this point. They can only stabilize him and hope for the best. For five years now he’s in constant pain, every day. He loses blood like sweat. Surely his veins are bruised and collapsed with how many times he would have needed to be hospitalized. Whether from losing too much blood, being too dehydrated or starved from “forgetting” to eat, or an organ failing as body continues to fall apart. “...even as my body rots and grows frail...” - Toshinori People are bound to stare at him as he walks down the street. A tall, willowy, skeleton with a grimace on his face and blood stains on his clothes as he coughs up more into his own hands. There would be the ones who outright ignore him when they walk by, the people who offer pitying smiles and sympathetic glances or just outright stare, and then ones who are afraid of his appearance- children screaming at the mere sight of him and running to their parents to hide from the monster. Each one is another knife in Toshinori’s side, an ache in his chest. If only they knew who I really am.
Tumblr media
Losing Nighteye took a toll on his hero work as well. Mirai was a huge help in the past, and took care of all Toshinori’s paperwork, while also reminding him to take care of himself. Without him, Toshinori was even more buried beneath his responsibilities. Plus, now he was on a time limit. He even snapped briefly in his first meeting with Tsukauchi, accidentally revealing himself as All Might because he was under too much pressure, and telling the detective he literally couldn’t handle doing everything by himself (who graciously took over the paperwork side of things for him).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He was living a double life now, having to lie to people left and right about who he was while in his small form, about how he became so sickly, why he was here in the first place who the heck is this skinny old guy. Surely he had multiple visits to the doctor while continuing to repair the damage done by AFO (there’s a limit to how much the body can handle at once. And things I’m sure continued to fail as time went on). Then he would be bedridden for as long as the doctors could keep him strapped to a bed, until he couldn’t take the people’s cries for help any longer, and would jump into action. (It’s also revealed he has something of a super hearing- able to hear danger- which may have been a form of danger sense of OFA that was never fully unlocked?. Either way, he surly could sense disasters happening while he could only lay and heal from his latest surgery. Those poor doctors must have had to re-stitch him several times). People blame him for not preparing society for his retirement, that he failed in passing on the torch so to speak, but in reality he did everything possible to keep society from falling for 40 years, doing all within his power just to keep things afloat. He is only one person. One human being, he can’t do everything despite trying to. Society failed All Might.
Tumblr media
People blame him for not being a good teacher. He didn’t exactly have the greatest teacher himself to learn from. He’s never had to teach anyone anything, he just punches! He’s learning. And for his own credit, he’s an incredibly wise man, he has years of experience under his belt, and an intelligence score of 6/6, scoring up there with Nezu! He may not always have the right way to bring something up, but he’s doing his best. Yet even he blames himself for Izuku not being able to control his quirk better. Every time the boy hurts himself, it’s just another tally on the chalkboard of Toshinori’s failures. He himself knows the boy deserves better, better than him. Useless. Pathetic.
Tumblr media
Then his friend from America, Dave, essentially became a villain trying to preserve Toshinori’s legacy after Toshinori told him about his injury. Dave went behind his back, threatened people, injured people (pretty sure people died), all for Toshinori’s sake. Something he didn’t want to begin with. Having to put your only other friend in jail for trying to help you surely couldn’t have been easy.
Tumblr media
Oh, by the way? All For One isn’t dead. All Might will fight him again, publicly, have his weakened form exposed to the world, and have his own emotions toyed with as he finds out about his master’s grandson in the villain’s hands. Would Nana hate him for leaving her son alone like she’d asked, and dooming her grandchild to be raised by the greatest villain? Could he have done anything to save him? But Toshinori isn’t allowed to feel, he has to smile and push his own feelings aside once again, because there’s a villain to be fought, and only he can fight him. Despite coming out on top, he’ll have suffered severe head trauma, broken left arm, destroyed right arm, and several cuts and bruises that are sure to scar. And then, his quirk, the only thing that’s been allowing him to help people, the gift given to him that he carefully held for 40 years and molded into his own until his very consciousness was permanently carved into it, blows out like a match in the wind. And he’s done. Used up. Empty. Broken. Hollow. Alone, again.
Tumblr media
He overhears his student, Bakugo, admit that he blames himself for All Might’s retirement. If he hadn’t been captured, All Might wouldn’t have had to save him, and he wouldn’t have had to fight AFO. Of course Toshinori knows that’s not true, his time was about to run out anyway. It would have happened one way or another. But how can he explain to this child that he wasn’t the cause of his hero, the world’s greatest hero, fighting for his sake, bleeding for his sake, being forced into retirement to keep him safe. Every time Bakugo sees the bandages covering Toshinori’s body is another reminder of the pain and sacrifice Toshinori willingly gave to keep him safe. Toshinori wasn’t held when his mentor died. He wasn’t told it was ok to be sad, that grief and mourning was a natural process, that it takes time to heal. He wasn’t told it was ok to cry. Instead his feelings were beaten out of him as he wondered if Gran Torino blamed him for Nana’s death. He already blamed himself How then, does he comfort a child mourning for him? For what he lost.
Tumblr media
And then he gets the call to come to the hospital. Mirai, Nighteye, his old sidekick friend, has been gravely injured, much like he himself was only a few years ago, and most likely won’t survive the night. And to his horror, Nighteye is happy to see him, smiles at him, says he doesn’t hate him for what happened, only wants Toshinori to be happy. He can’t accept that, at least let him apologize, reconcile his sins before it’s too late! But it is. Another fractured piece of his heart gone.
Tumblr media
Of course, seeing your students beat up and their arms completely destroyed must have hurt. Instead of being able to save these kids, they’re the ones that hurt themselves to save everyone else. And if Bakugo had kept OFA, things could have been very different (especially with what we know now of OFA and people with quirks). Toshinori wasn’t mad at Izuku for transferring it away, he’d never regret choosing Izuku, and I believe he still would have stayed by Izuku and Bakugo’s side should it have stayed in Bakugo, doing whatever he could to help.
Tumblr media
As he tells Aizawa, “I’ve decided to live,” -that statement seems so melancholy, besides obvious reasons. It sounds more like another task he has to accomplish. He didn’t die he was supposed to die with the AFO fight, and now the whole life he lived is over. The world has no use for him anymore. If not for Izuku, he’d have nothing left keeping him here. But because his boy made him promise to live, he’ll do so. Though it almost seems like he says those words with regret. “I’ve decided to live.” Not, “I’m going to live!” “Nothing can kill me!” “I won’t go down without a fight!” No. “I’ll live if I have to, only because you asked me to.” The man is obviously and outwardly depressed. He has so many things against him. No doubt has severe PTSD, anxiety, among others. Not to mention his own physical health. Every day hurts. It’s painful to be alive. Why would he torture himself if he doesn’t have to? For you, my boy. You’re the only thing keeping me here. The only light in my dark world.
Tumblr media
He tries to help Izuku find out the previous holder’s quirks, to help his boy in any way he can now that he’s worthless, and goes days on end without sleep, running his body into the ground. He even forgets Christmas. Only to find that by giving the boy the same gift he had received, he may have just doomed him to an early death, among psychological torture (danger detection). (Granted, he really doesn’t know how everything works, and he’s afraid to talk to anyone about it). His boy could live only half a life.
Tumblr media
It’s only been a few months since he retired, and society has fallen into shambles. People are blaming him. People are dying. He watches helplessly as his colleague fight his fight for him, and end up battered, bruised, crippled, dead. He students, his boy, battle the monster he should have killed. Children are bleeding. This shouldn’t happen. This wasn’t supposed to happen. Is everything he worked for, everything he fought to protect, to build up, to inspire, is all for naught?! Did he live a foolish dream and doom the world? Was all the the friends he lost, tears he shed, the organs he destroyed, the pain he endures on a daily basis from the hole in his side, and the blood he continues to bleed every day, for nothing? The public, the ones he protected for so long, mourn his absence, but surely there are those among them who also blame him. The statue from his last fight in Kamino one that he never asked for was decimated in a mock of his catch phrase- the one that was supposed to give hope.
Tumblr media
Now he can feel his own vestige speaking with Izuku in the OFA realm, even with out OFA in his own body anymore. His clock as nearly reached it’s limit, Nighteye’s prediction is due any day now. The only thing he wants is to see his boy smile at him, to give him some shred of hope. Yet the child remains unconscious, and Toshinori can’t even hold his hand from the bandages covering his arms. Will he still be able to fight? Is there any coming back from this now? Did I break him?
Tumblr media
With all Toshinori has been through, I’m honestly surprised we haven’t seen him just outright break down. Anyone, anyone, else should have crumbled under the pressure of holding up the world for 40 years alone. And instead of being able to pass it on to someone when he can no longer bear its weight, it simply falls to into the abyss. People don’t credit All Might enough for everything he’s done. Most don’t realize the sacrifices he’s made. His character is so unbelievably profound and deep, it’s more than just the “I am here!” people focus on. He’s a deeply troubled, layered, complex character. And I can’t find fault within him.

Okay I'm gonna do it dammit because I watched Squid Game on the day it launched and it won't leave me and also I don't know if I'll write this later because MCD obvs but I might
<Spoilers AHOY!!! TW: Violence>
BNHA SQUID GAME AU Headcanons
Tumblr media
-First of all, it's a Quirk AU. Also, the canon students are all adults now. Sue me, it's still gonna be a commentary on a superpowered society and a critique on Quirk hierarchy.
-Izuku, predictably, is Quirkless. He doesn't get OFA, never gets into UA. He does finish college with flying colors, but doesn't get into any hero-ing jobs, or any good-paying jobs at all. Unlike the MC of Squid Game, he's not a gambling addict and is actually trying to make the most of his janitorial job that he ends up in. However, he is still driven to become a Pro Hero by any means possible. Thus, he looks into buying support items. Gets scammed. Around the same time, his mother Inko got sick because of overworking, leading to them becoming deeply in debt.
-Over the years, Izuku had sold his rare All Might merch to pay for his college tuition fee. It was an investment with a high risk, high reward that never paid off.
-With her canon backstory, Uraraka is perfect for getting into the Squid Game. She doesn't get into UA because not enough rescue points. Her parents' construction business utterly failed and no one would hire them. Their poor lifestyle got even poorer and Uraraka is forced to become a pickpocket. Ends up pickpocketing Izuku's meager salary that was supposed to be for his mother.
-Bakugou is like the Squid Game's MC's childhood friend character, of course. Got into U.A. Gets continually praised for getting in and becoming a Pro. But, god, he sucks at PR. He may have pissed off a few too many people at the same time, both heroes and villains alike, which led to them teaming up and taking him out (while making it look like an accident.) Basically, he has the attitude of Deok-su (being the strongest and showing it off), and the history of Sang-woo. The difference is that he does end up being loyal to the group that he ends up with, rather than just backstabbing them when it suits him.
-The Front Man of the game...is Dabi. Which leads to Shouto Todoroki being the Pro Hero who tracks down where his missing brother is. Shouto is Top 5 in Hero Rankings, and one of the few from the canon 1-A to actually make it as a Pro, alongside Yaoyorozu, Iida, and Bakugou.
-Shinsou, my beloved, is in the game. He'd tried so hard to not become a Villain but ended up becoming one--his worst nightmare--simply because no one would hire him and he had no one to support his dream.
-Okay, Don't hate me, but a lot of the canon Pro Heroes are in the Squid Game including canon U.A. Faculty like...Aizawa Shouta. I find it interesting to possibly explore the potential of these older teachers competing in a life-death situation with their students??? Like, come on:
Marble Game. Aizawa vs. Shinsou. Yeah. It's hella fucked up and I'm not even hiding it but that's what we're signing up for.
-It's worse because Aizawa would be the first one in Shinsou's life to say "He would've supported him," and Shinsou is hyperventilating because the hero he idolized is saying what he'd been wanting to hear all his life!!!!
-Some games are different, some are the same. Marble Game and Glass Bridge Game and Squid Game stay.
-Player Number 001 is...
...All For One. I was tempted to make it All Might, but AFO really fits the role. He's blind and potatoed here, and acts like he's been shunned by society for having a "villainous" quirk. (Said quirk that he uses for villainous purposes anyway.) Turns out, he's the most 'quirk-rich' out of all of them, and simply gets a kick out of manipulating people.
-Yagi Toshinori is the winner of a previous Squid Game. All Might was absent in these few days of participation. I lied...for this is the first and only time that AFO did not play as Player Number 001. He kidnapped Yagi as revenge for his lost eyesight. Also, Yagi was wearing these Quirk-suppression bindings the entire time he played. Why could he not take the Squid Game down, knowing of its existence? The Hero Commission is also behind the Game.
-Izuku PLAYS SMART. Like actively strategizing here. AFO is also like, sticking with him through this. Obeying Izuku's plans and all.
Too bad, really...
Izuku chose the 1st vest in the Glass Bridge Game.
...Not because it's the only one left either. In fact, he's the first one who picked. Curse his bleeding heart, he picked so the others would have a higher chance of surviving. He managed halfway before falling through the glass.
(He survives. Because AFO slipped him a regeneration quirk and arranged for Izuku to be smuggled away in a coffin and into AFO's Vault.)
-Hatsume Mei is in the game and takes up the role of "overselling" her abilities had she ever been given the right equipment. But since there is little to none opportunities, she ends up not being able to actually show off her gadgeteer prowess much. If she's able to bring any small gadget with her, it was quickly destroyed within one or two games. She's not desired as a team member mainly because her quirk Zoom is just generally "useless".
-Tsuyu Asui is in the Squid Game and ends up befriending Uraraka Ochako.
-Mineta keeps trying to sell his skills to any girls by saying how good he is in bed, then when that inevitably fails he approaches Bakugou to try and join his team. Which fails as well. His quirk becomes so useful during Tug-o-war though. Gets to the second-to-the-last game because he's scum and good at using his scumminess to survive.
-Shigaraki Tomura is a participant as well, along with Spinner, Toga, Twice, Magne, and Compress. Originally set-up to look like the Main antagonists because they do actively murder people. But is shown to be sympathetic to those who they view to be outcasts like them. So they mainly target people with Heroic quirks and who hypocritically think they're better than the Villain scum they've ended up with.
-Other notable students in the game: Yoarashi Inasa, Shindou Yo (very first one who gets killed for stealing 9th place in 2020 Popularity Poll, no offense to Yo fans), Kirishima, Hagakure, Mina, Kaminari, Aoyama, Shouji, Tokoyami, Ojiro, Sato, Koda, Sero.
-Chisaki Kai is the Main Antagonist. Oh, and he's brought the entire Shie Hassaikai with him into the Squid Game to try and brute force it. They need money dammit! Also, he discards his own people like trash like Deok-su does when they cease to be useful to him.

Since it's kinda canon in PMG that All Might received death threats from the hero commission, is it also canon that someone (*cough* hero commission *cough*) sent assassins to kill him? is that how Toshi died? Like, imagine your a serial killer on commission and your paid to kill the no 1 hero. You kill the no 1 hero but for some reason he just wont stay dead???!!! Like how unfair is that?!?!?! All your hard work for nothing??? and the commission won't even pay you a fraction of the 25 billion dollars you were promised because they don't believe you when you say you already killed him once?!?!?! Again, how unfair is that?!?!?!
Also will we also get to see someone try to assassinate Toshi on screen?
toshinori hasn't had any assassination attempts that he knows of (or i know of for that matter. there's a lot time that probably won't get expanded on unless i feel like it. i really am building this up on the spot so i don't exactly know what's gonna get expanded on further than a few chapters ahead).
If it helps shigaraki's gonna make the same attempt at his life that he did in canon? any present day attempts at people's lives in this fic are from afo's side and not the hero commission.
people who have actually had assassins sent after them are first, second, and third. for now the hero commission is willing to have a silent trust that no one's gonna do any killing. still pretty suspicious that hawks happens to be yoichi's next door neighbour tho.

for my 30 min fic challenge / read more: ‘30 min fics’ tag
drawing voices deep from you [read on AO3]
Deep within One for All, Izuku makes a mistake. All for One has a new body.
“So this is it?” Izuku said quietly.
He looked around at the cracked and strange place; tall, empty chairs sat in a semicircle, but Izuku was surrounded by seven figures.
One for All—Yoichi, Izuku remembered—smiled.
“You already have my Quirk.” He took Izuku’s hands and squeezed.
His heart hurt. Sometimes it was easy to think of the vestiges as just… ghosts, remnants of a different time. More than often though, as he held each of their Quirks, used them, he remembered they had been real people once living in a different time.
And all of them except one killed by All for One.
“Then…”
Izuku’s knees knocked together. “What happens next?”
Nana touched his shoulder. “You keep fighting. You keep going. With all of us behind you.”
If this space was One for All… this broken room, set in a whirling, endless void—why was it so small? Izuku turned, looking to where the walls crumbled and out into the open. What was the rest of it?
He’d thought about the questions before. But Izuku had thought privately to himself that maybe if he unlocked every Quirk, if he faced every truth, this room would disappear, and become something else.
“What’s… what’s out there?”
Yoichi hadn’t let go of his hand, and now gripped it tighter. “Don’t go.”
His curiosity ached.
“So you think there’s something.”
“If it is what I think it is,” Yoichi warned, “you should stay here.”
Izuku looked back. Faves echoed to him, each one silent.
“So you don’t know.”
Yoichi shook his head.
“Can… can I come back?”
Yoichi frowned, but gestured around him. “This is your Quirk.”
But something of it was still out of Izuku’s control. There was something he hadn’t grasped yet, an understanding that eluded him now. Izuku pulled himself free of Yoichi’s grasp, and he was let go this time without a fight.
“I’ll come back, then,” he promised.
Heart pounding in his chest, he walked to the edge where ground met nothing.
“Izuku,” someone called. It could have been one voice. It could have been many.
Izuku stepped out, down, and fell.
The sensation was weird. He was falling, but this wasn’t real, really, and the darkness surrounded him. It almost felt alive, cradling him in a weathered hand. Something pulsed in the heart of the darkness.
A light.
Izuku reached for it, flickering red and encompassing, and—
Toshinori searched the sky for Izuku.
The battle was dying. Izuku sank back to the ground, Blackwhip still dancing around him but faded now. From the edge, Toshinori could taste the power in the air. Like electricity.
He moved first, picking his way through rubble. Izuku landed hard, and suddenly reached up with a hand to grab his head.
“Young Midoriya!”
Izuku looked in Toshinori’s direction.
His eyes…
There was something strange about his eyes.
Toshinori picked up the pace, uncaring, running the short distance between them as Izuku jerked. A tremor ran through his shoulders.
He said, in a small voice, “All… All Might?”
Hawks landed and came over. “Something wrong?” He jerked his head in the other direction. “Endeavor’s got the villain. What’s up with the kid?”
“I—I don’t…” Izuku shook his head. One for All crackled to life around him, green light giving his skin an unnatural glow. “All Might, please—please help. Help. Help.”
Toshinori took Izuku’s face in his hands. “Tell me what’s wrong.”
Up close, his eyes were—they were changing colors. Black, from the inside out.
“I-” Izuku lapsed into silence. He shook, then cried out in pain. “I think I made a mistake, wait, please, don’t, I’m sorry —”
Then he went still and limp, like a puppet with all his strings cut. Toshinori caught him, looking towards Hawks.
“We need…”
“Medic!” Hawks called.
Toshinori shook Izuku gently. “Midoriya? Can you hear me?”
His eyes snapped open. Izuku blinked up at Toshinori—with completely black eyes—and suddenly, his mouth curved into a smile.
“All Might.”
Toshinori recoiled. That wasn’t Izuku’s voice. Those weren’t Izuku’s eyes.
“...Izuku?”
“What’s going on?”
Izuku laughed.
“Your face,” he said as he stood. “It’s good to be able to see again. And what a sight.”
He threw out his arms, flexing his fingers and marvelling. Glanced around the battlefield as if the destruction was uninteresting to him. Shadows gathered on his face.
“Ah…” He took a step. “Oh, Izuku,” he said. “Thank you for the opportunity. It’s been so long.”
Toshinori clenched his fists. “What have you done to Izuku?”
“What have I done?” A chuckle. “He’s the one who opened the door and came looking for me. Don’t you recognize me?”
“Let him go.”
All for One flicked his fingers. Blackwhip tore out of his arm violently, in a way that Toshinori hadn’t seen since the first time Izuku used it. There was no other explanation, no other person this could be, who stared with Izuku’s eyes at Toshinori holding so much hate.
“I don’t think I will,” All for One said.
It was Izuku’s voice, sort of. Toshinori still recognized it; but it was a little bit distant now, and warped, as if he was hearing the voice through a radio.
“After all, he’s just given me the key to freedom. He had All for One, too, a piece of it when I gave my brother his Quirk. Izuku just had to find it.”
Toshinori forced his hands to uncurl and held his hands out, mind racing. They couldn’t negotiate. They couldn’t fight. He cast a helpless glance in Hawks’ direction, whose feathers darted out but hovered.
All for One’s voice changed back, to Izuku’s. “You wouldn’t want to hurt your hero, would you?”
“Please,” Toshinori said.
A glance. “Will you beg for it?”
Toshinori knew that he wouldn’t let Izuku go even if he begged, but he dropped to his knees anyway. Concrete hit him. He looked up at Izuku—his successor, his legacy, his boy.
“Please.”
Fast, faster than Toshinori had time to comprehend, a scarred hand wrapped around Toshinori’s throat. Could he feel Toshinori’s heartbeat, pounding, alive?
“Pathetic,” All for One said. “The Symbol of Peace.”
That was Izuku’s hand. That was Izuku’s body, it was still him—Toshinori couldn’t fight, not even if this was his greatest enemy. So he knelt as the hand tightened. His lungs screamed.
“Please.”
All for One had never been satisfied. It was in his name, in his Quirk. What he wanted, he took; what he couldn’t have, he destroyed worlds and families and people to remake for himself.
But not—
Not Izuku. He couldn’t speak anymore. Please.
“He’s not gone, you know,” All for One said, leaning in.
“All Might!” Hawk’s voice, distant and fuzzy. Toshinori reached out a hand, trying to convey his message. Don’t hurt him. “All for One, let them both go.”
All for One leaned in. Izuku. His eyes flickered with green light. Out of the corner of Toshinori’s eye, he could see curls of hair.
He fought for air. The hand around his throat eased, just slightly, as if All for One knew.
“Izuku,” Toshinori rasped. “It’s… okay. It’s not, it’s not your fault. I forgive you.”
All for One drew back. A tear ran down his face, but All for One didn’t seem to be aware it was there.
“Izuku’s begging, too,” he whispered. “He’s calling your name, All Might.”
A sudden release. Toshinori gasped, his chest caving from inside-out, spots dancing in his vision. He fell back, concrete scraping his hands, and struggled to get up.
Hawks grabbed his shoulder, drew him to his feet—good, because Toshinori had no strength to stand.
“Izuku…” Toshinori begged. “Please come back.”
All for One smiled again. Toshinori suddenly had a memory of Izuku kneeling in front of him, Quirkless and sobbing as he held out a hand. They stood in the golden, dying light of day as Toshinori offered Izuku his Quirk.
Would this have happened if Izuku hadn’t taken it, or if Toshinori hadn’t offered it? Would he be safer?
But not happier. There was a smile Toshinori treasured, one that was twisted on his face now. But not better. All Might would have died if that day had passed with nothing, for all that Izuku had given him, and he couldn’t regret that.
“We’ll see,” All for One said. Then, having won the battle, he strode away. From the back, receding into the distance and the dust; and dressed in green with his cape fluttering, a familiar silhouette, Toshinori could hardly tell him apart from Izuku.

Fic Prompts: Free Day Thursday
(Everybody Lives au)
Tenko was up to something. He may have thought he was being subtle, but it was starting to be almost embarrassingly obvious that something was afoot.
At first, Izuku had thought it might be quirk related, and just let him be. Having a half finished AFO copy came with troubles of its own. Sometimes, when Tenko was at capacity for quirk storage, he had to isolate a little bit. Hana had explained it as his body trying so hard to offload one of the six quirks that he had to make sure he didnt accidentally give a random student something they didn't need.
But...when Tenko was having quirk problems, usually he told Izuku, or All Might, or Nana, or Hana. Whatever was going on now, he seemed to be spending all his time down in the Support Course workrooms. Ochako had reported that she saw him stealing Melissa from her Support Gear debates with Hatsume Mei to help him with something. Melissa had seemed to know exactly what he meant.
"I guess it wouldn't seem so weird if he wasn't avoiding me," Izuku admitted to Tenya after the third week of Tenko Weirdness. "I don't think I made him mad, because he still grins at me when he sees me, and not like Kacchan smiles because Kacchan smiles kinda like chimpanzees do it means he's about to attack but I didn't learn that until I was like eight but that doesn't matter because we're not talking about Kacchan we're talking about Tenko and-"
Tenya waved a hand stiffly to get Izuku's attention before he could spiral into too much worry. He offered a reassuring smile.
"I wouldn't worry too much. Perhaps he is merely very busy right now. Whatever he's working on in Support, he may not want you or anyone else not involved to know about it until he's satisfied with the end result."
Izuku fidgeted. "Yeah...I guess you're right. I just got used to him wanting to hang out after school."
"He and Hana quite serious about their involvement in your life, I think," Tenya mused, "It reminds me of my older brother sometimes. I'm sure when he has time, he'll be able to talk again."
The first person to directly confirm that something was weird was, as it happened, All Might. Izuku found him standing in the hallway with an odd expression on his face. Tenko was already to the stairs, snickering faintly.
"Was that Tenko?" Izuku asked, coming to stand next to his mentor.
"Uh-huh," Toshinori said, a little distracted. He shook his head. "That boy's up to something."
Izuku blinked. "You think so, too?"
With a helpless gesture, Toshinori answered, "Well, he told me to my face, "I'm up to something", so that's a pretty good indicator I'd say. He seems proud of it, whatever the something is."
Tenko had a weird sense of humor.
The second person to directly confirm his suspicions was Hana. She'd just come off a patrol -- she hated having to start over at sidekick level when she didn't know any of the local heroes -- and had caught Tenko sneaking out of the dorms. Her loud "And where are you going?" had drawn Izuku and Ochako's attention away from dish duty to see "Izuku's weird cousin" halfway out the first floor window.
"I'm going to Nunya," Tenko had answered.
"Oh gimme a break," Hana scoffed, just as Ochako had innocently asked "Nunya?"
"Nunya business!" Tenko hooted gleefully, and vanished out the window.
Hana had shaken her head in annoyance and flopped down on the couch. "Brat couldn't be more suspicious if he'd put on a trenchcoat and started playing the Pink Panther theme everywhere he went."
[[MORE]]
It wasn't until the middle of the month that Izuku finally found out what his "cousin" had been doing. With all the training and preparations, Izuku had sort of forgotten that his birthday was so close. Somewhere in the back of his mind, sure, he knew he was going to be sixteen very very soon. But it didn't register to him as particularly important. Nobody would really notice except maybe All Might. Same as always.
Until he couldn't get out of his dorm room on the weekend of the 15th, because someone had strung red, white, and blue streamers from one side of the door frame to the other. The tape holding them in place was definitely Sero's, but Izuku was fairly certain the glittery banners looked like something Aoyama would make.
The glitter that got stuck in his hair all but confirmed Aoyama's involvement.
Was it a prank? Izuku couldn't think of anything that would have warranted the beginning of a prank war. Aizawa hated those.
When he got downstairs, he found about half of his classmates waiting for him with expectant grins.
And All Might.
And Tenko.
And Hana.
And Melissa?
And Nana?
And his mom!
"Happy birthday, Deku!" Ochako yelled, startling him.
"You guys...actually remembered what day that is?" Izuku sputtered when he managed to find his voice.
"Uh, we've only been plotting for like, weeks," Kaminari scoffed, "I don't forget stuff that quickly!"
Tenya took off his glasses and looked apologetic. "I hope you can excuse the way I deliberately withheld information from you," he said solemnly, "I was asked not to spoil the surprise."
Shouto looked as confused as Izuku. "I didn't know if I was supposed to say anything. I don't know how these things work."
It took some effort not to flood the room with tears. Tears were still shed, but a more human amount. Ochako and Hagakure all but dragged Izuku to one of the couches in front of the television, clearly excited.
"We told Mr. Aizawa we wanted to do something for your birthday, so he said we could have a party if we didn't make a mess!" Hagakure explained. "We don't have cake yet, but that's cuz Sato wants to go shopping first because somebody ate all the frosting."
Tokoyami glared from the kitchen. "I will not be blamed for things that Dark Shadow allegedly did when I was sleeping."
"Mmmmm, frosting!" Dark Shadow crowed, completely unrepentant.
"You are a disgrace," Tokoyami told his quirk.
"But full of frosting!"
Izuku couldn't help but laugh. Sometimes, Dark Shadow was a menace.
"So cake has to wait, and some presents can wait until cake," Toshinori said as he came to sit down on an adjacent couch, "But Melissa and Tenko didn't want to wait to give you their gift."
Izuku was floored. His friends not only remembered his birthday, they wanted to give him a gift?! He vowed to find out exactly what they wanted for their birthdays so he could repay their kindness someday.
"Is this why you keep sneaking off to Support?" Izuku asked before he could stop himself.
Tenko looked enormously pleased with himself. "Yes! Sneaky birthday business was underway." He dug through the pockets of his trenchcoat and came up with a game box. It looked like one of the Final Fantasy games that Izuku owned, but with a slightly different box cover.
"Fair warning," Tenko said as he handed the box to Izuku, "Melissa and I definitely voided this thing's warranty with the kind of mods we squeezed in there. So this is a one of a kind copy."
Melissa made a face from where she sat with Nana. "I just did the mechanical parts. He did all the programming."
Clearly, they meant for him to try it out right then and there. It took a moment to find the controller and get the tv set up, but soon enough the title screen for Final Fantasy XII came up. An option had been added to the menu in font that didn't quite match saying, "Costumes Mod".
He didn't quite know what to expect when he chose it. But then a screen full of every costume All Might had ever worn appeared. Some were locked, suggesting there were actually quests or tasks he would have to complete to get them. The ones available fit every character except Fran, though admittedly some characters looked better in the costumes than others.
Izuku turned to stare at Tenko. "You...made this?"
The Shigaraki doppelganger smirked. "You should see my other mods. I made one when I was in high school where you can make the whole party cactuars. Totally broke the cutscenes." He drooped slightly. "Of course, that mod when up in smoke with the rest of my timeline, but I could probably recreate it eventually."
He leaned over the back of the couch to tousle Izuku's hair. "Happy birthday, squirt."
Tenko pulled away and glanced at his hand. "What the- is that glitter?"
Aoyama looked away and whistled innocently.

Daniel and YN part 9 🌗🌗
“Sensei, I think we have a lead on Daniel and YN.” “Tell me more, Tomura.” Shigaraki’s spine tingles when his master speaks.
His father figure, his sensei. Desperate to please, he pulled up the file his rat in the police station grabbed. “Last week there was an incident at the cafe in the pink district. There were several vases destroyed from an unknown explosion. The windows were cracked from trembling so hard. Almost all the footage tapes were melted, melted in the camera holder. When examined, the broken materials were giving off radiation. Radiation so bad it left a cop in the hospital.” “Interesting… you said almost all the footage?” “Yes. My rat got me the only tape that survived. When I watched it, I think I saw them.” AFO tilted his head. It was progressing faster than planned, but of course he was prepared for that possibility. Daniel seemed to be more subject to his emotions than his sister. Over the years AFO did not see an improvement on his mental development. It seemed that he would need to intervene sooner than expected if he did not want to lose his child to a hero. “Sensei. There’s also news that All Might and his protege are investigating the incident.” Now that was a complication. All Might and his other child should not be allowed total influence over the two. It was time to enact a different plan. One that involved seeing his past wife. “Thank you Tomura. I want you to keep an eye out for them. They are not to be harmed. I have to make arrangements. When you find them make sure you keep a nullifier on hand. In case Daniel needs to be calmed down.” With that, AFO hung up and opened a portal to the Midoryia household. He hasn’t gone by Midoryia for a long time, but even so he did not expect a warm welcome from his past wife. And when she opened the door to him, the look of worry on her face confirmed his suspicions. “They’re not here. Izuku is out trying to find YN. You can’t lash out at him or All Might. They’re-” “I plan to find them first. Izuku is not capable of handling Daniel’s quirk if they upset him. And you underestimate YN. She is very adept at hiding and defense.” “How would you know?” “Because I keep a watchful eye on all my children.” “All your..?” “Four years before we conceived Izuku, I donated my DNA for a little… experiment. The mother had a minor quirk involving radiation. From that pregnancy cane Daniel. Four years later, months after we conceived Izuku, I had my DNA donated again. YN was born from that.” “They 're just experiments to you?” “At first, yes. I did not plan to get attached. But I did. And I have been attached since. I was there when Daniel first displayed reminances of a quirk. I was there when YN learned to balance herself on a high wire. I found them when they were lost. I arranged for her mother’s job to move her to this district and apartment building. I’m the reason you gained custody of them if you recall the deal we made.” “I…” “My point is I may not have been there for Izuku’s life but I have been there for my other two. And I don’t plan to relinquish my children to All Might or those heroes. Is that understood, All Might?” Inko turned around to see her son and his mentor standing in the doorway. Both were glaring at the villain. Ready to ounce at him if need be. But without him she would lose the children. “Mom get away from him.” “Is that any way to speak to your father Izuku?” “YOU LEFT!” Before the fighting could get any worse Inko stood between them. “My baby, my love.” She turned to All Might and Izuku. “We may not like it but he is their father. And he probably would be useful to returning YN and Daniel safely. We have to sit down and figure this out. For them.” So with great tension, Two rivals sat across a dinner table along with a green haired boy and a troubled mother. All discussing the custody of two individuals that didn’t belong to them. 🌗🌗
Daniel and YN part 10 🌗🌗
Sometimes YN wished she had made more of an effort to make friends. Yes Daniel was her best and closest friend, but it would be nice to have a girl or boy her own age to talk to. Someone that she could talk about stupid crap with. She tried being friends with Izuku when she and her brother officially moved in with the Midoryia’s, but they never saw her or Daniel as their own people. Izuku never really cared that YN was great at math. The best in her class. That she had a tiny interest in math because the answers were always exact and never had to be debated. He didn’t bother to care that YN liked reading romance and horror stories, that she really liked cheesy murder mystery movies with a twist villain hidden in plain sight. Izuku knew those things about her, but he just wrote it down in his notebook and filed it away like she wasn’t a person. They were no better to Daniel either. He was treated like an incompetant child. Like he was stupid and a baby. Sure he was disabled but he wasn’t incapable of everything. If they bothered talking and treating him like a person they’d see how complex he was. They’d see that he was so talented when he painted, that he could find a focus on the small important details. That Daniel, while he couldn’t understand complex emotions, could create beautiful things. Daniel had a delayed mind, but he loved figuring out puzzles. Daniel loved pinwheels and painted windmills, loved when they spun to beautiful colours. But did they care, no they saw only a child that needed to be coddled and kept away from how beautiful the world could be. YN couldn’t help but tear up as she held her knees to her chest. Why? Why couldn’t Izuku have been the friend she needed when her parents died? Why didn’t she try harder to make friends when she was at public school? Why did she act so introverted and angry at everyone? Just as she was about to cry, YN felt two long arms wrap around her. “Why you sad?” “It’s nothing really. I just… I really miss momma and pop. I really wish they were here.” “....Me too.” So the two hugged tightly. For tonight and every night that will come, they’ll have each other. In another place, a skinny blue haired villain placed a severed hand on his face. Determined to please his master, his father figure, Shigaraki set out to find the two troubled teens. They couldn’t be hidden forever. Besides, AFO should be allowed to see his children. He was their father, by blood. Shigaraki wasn’t an idiot though. He knew that the incident caused a commotion for those hungry for power. Ready to use quirk off the Boy. Shigaraki made sure to send some of his underlings out to gather intel and report whether or not other crimelords had their sights and claws on the teens. He had to be careful not to cause a scene and bring the heroes upon them. As the cold night blew his hair slightly, Shigaraki pondered the situation. Sensei had a wife, and three children? But not all share the same mother. He didn’t raise his three children, but he looked after them. But out of all of them Sensei chose to raise Shigaraki. He felt special. Sensei wanted to be near him. Nonetheless, these two were family. His sorta siblings. And he would bring them home. 🌗🌗
Daniel and YN part 11 🌗🌗
Young Izuku had the foundations to be a great hero. He was kind, string in heart, brave, and a little stupid. Toshinori knew that he would make a fine owner of OFA. And when he trained the boy he saw the makings of a new symbol of peace. Inko was a beautiful woman, even if she was too anxious to notice. He felt this urge to love and protect her. And over the months with her and Izuku, they formed a genuine love. Toshinori was a little concerned at first when he met YN and Daniel though. He did not really understand why they were kept so sheltered and why they were so babied. YN seemed like a capable young woman. But like with Izuku and Inko, the more time he spent near them, the more he felt protective, loving, obsessive. “Ah, good morning young YN. How was your night?” “What do you think. You stole my switchblade.” Inko seemed to bristle a bit at YN’s angry tone. “Sweetie.. We just thought that you could get hurt. It’s for the best. You know that w-” “That you only want the best for me. Yea I heard the same argument over and over again. And each time it’s still bull.” Before either could reprimand her, she stomped to her room slamming the door. Mornings usually weren’t so great. Especially when the night before they had to make big decisions regr=arding her safety. On All Might’s days off he would spend time with the Midoryia’s, sometimes it would go smoothly and sometimes the mood couldn’t surpass a funeral. All Might felt that he should’ve noticed the signs that YN was going to run away sooner. Perhaps then he could have intervened and then the whole family could air out why things were the way they were.
The first signs had to be when YN kept interfering with the way Inko felt was right to take care of poor Daniel. “Come on Daniel, It’s time to go to the learning center.” “Oh sweetie, I forgot to tell you that we pulled Daniel out of the center classes.” “What?” When YN’s face turned, All Might could see that a screaming match would begin, well not really a match considering young YN would be doing all the screaming. He was just here to pick up young Midoryia but he couldn’t help but stop in. “Well it’s just that Daniel learns so much better at a home, and the center is full of so many people that would be mean to him. Besides, he doesn’t really need to be at the center when I can take care of him.” “Yes he does! How is he gonna learn to cook and clean and manage any type of money if you refuse to let him learn!?!” “Daniel’s mind can’t handle all the new information. He might start to panic and his quirk might-” “YOU don’t know a GODDAMN thing about him! About what is best for him! You wanna do what’s best for my brother?! Than STOP treating him like he’s completely incompetent!” Before she could yell another word All Might stepped in with his trademark ‘I AM HERE’ . “Now young YN that’s no way to speak to your foster mother. She just believes that someone more personal should be teaching Daniel these things. That's not so bad is it?” “But-” “IS IT?” “Fine.I’ll get my school work done early so that I can teach Daniel in the afternoon.”
With that the argument was resolved. If only that was the last time she lashed out at them. If only he prevented the biggest fight that broke out between Izuku and YN. “Will you stop pestering him about his quirk?! It obviously makes him uncomfortable!” YN had walked into the room seeing Izuku asking Daniel all sorts of questions about his quirk and how he used it. It would’ve been fine had he stopped at the first two questions, but he kept going on and on. Wouldn’t stop asking about the destructive qualities, or about how his mind sometimes couldn’t comprehend his own quirk. Izuku didn’t notice how uncomfortable Daniel was getting. “I was just asking him some questions!” “You were being a jerk!” Before Izuku could yell at her again, the table and the mirrors broke. Both turned to see Daniel staring furious and scared, tears streaming down his cheeks. “Don’t scream at my sister!” He spoke angrily. He was so brave, so ready to defend his baby sister. Daniel could’ve brought the whole room down, had All Might in his ultimate form not stepped and stopped him. All Might should’ve known not to grab him and held him down. He should’ve known that the constriction made Daniel panic. Made him destroy more things to make it stop. The screaming continued, until YN grabbed her brother and calmed him. They barricaded themselves in her room that night. And in the morning, the three tried to act like it didn’t happen. All Might took the kids out for the day. Celebrating Izuku’s placement in the hero program. The signs were there that day. The signs that they were going to run. That they were going to leave. If only All Might had seen the signs. If only Toshinori hadn’t gotten attached to them. 🌗🌗
Daniel and YN part 12 🌗🌗
Toshinori was a good man. He wasn’t perfect but he was a good man. He had a moral code and knew right from wrong. Though selfish desires sometimes took his attention more than the moral desires. He knew it was wrong to smother and coddle Daniel and YN, but he couldn’t help wanting to protect them. Even if they didn’t want it. He felt like Izuku, YN, and Daniel were like his children. He felt just as protective over Izuku as he was over YN and Daniel. But he couldn’t coddle him like the other two. He had a duty to Nana to pass on OFA, Izuku had to live up to that power now. And he was so dedicated to being a hero. Toshinori wanted to do right by all the kids. He felt that it was his duty to find his missing kids, and bring them home. Let YN know that he didn’t feel angry that she left. Let Daniel know that he was sorry. So before he could work with his arch enemy, he decided to learn more about the two. So that when they were found again, he could show them that he was ready to be a real mentor figure, a guardian. When he entered YN’s room, it was not what he expected. He thought the sullen looking problem child would have grunge posters, a dirty room, torn up clothes and what not. Imagine his surprise when he saw colourful mini lantern lights strung over the walls. A math book along with several romance and horror storybooks. Her bedspread was a mix of several pillows and a giant comforter. Something that he’s sure would look inviting after a long day. There was a fluffy rug that cushioned his feet. The curtains were dark and cut out all light. On her bookshelf there was a collection of old murder mystery and comedy movies. When he popped one into the small tv player, he felt a stronger connection than before with her. Laughing at the cheesy twists and overacting. She was more than just a quirkless victim. She felt like a daughter to him. Toshinori never understood why he never went into Daniel’s room before. Of course Inko was there. Holding Daniel’s favorite pillow. This room, like the other, was a window into someone that Toshinori never actually knew. For some reason he thought Daniel would have soft light wall colors and some doodles on the wall. But the walls were an earthy dark blue. His blankets were patterned with prints of old paintings. There were canvases of unfinished pieces of art littered around the desk and bed. Notes and papers of unconnected thoughts all tucked away in a drawer. He spotted a framed photo of what he assumed were Daniel’s parents. Hidden under his pillows. When he saw the ceiling, it was a mix of a starry night sky but had handprints all over. In various colors. Touching his own hand to the print, Toshinori felt a connection to the boy. It was like a click happened. He wasn’t just a boy struggling with his developmental disability. Daniel saw the world in colors and was just frustrated that no one could understand those colors. Daniel wasn’t an emotionally compromised person with a violent quirk, he was a boy who wanted to be happy and understood. That day, Toshinori finally felt the wall that was preventing him from really understanding these two was finally lifted. And had he been listening to his moral side he would’ve known to not pursue them. But his selfish side won that fight. With his new understanding came an ugly obsession. A protective instinct to hold and protect them even more. Whilst quirkless YN might be strong and smart, she was too emotional and easy to provoke. Daniel might not be safe out there either. He loses control when people don’t understand. But Toshinori understood now. He would keep his children safe. Izuku, Daniel, and YN. Even if he had to work with the devil. “I’ll bring you home. Everything will be okay. Because I am here.” 🌗🌗
Amazing work as always moon anon! The story has become quite interesting! Its inspiring me to write for platonic AFO, something that I've not talked about for quite a while. Him and well, Erasermic

All for Outsourcing
Alright  so, this post is going to be a long mess. I was just thinking and asking myself why does this panel trigger something in me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What we see clearly explained is that a. AfO wants to hijack Shigaraki’s body after All Might has destroyed his; b. AfO wants OfA; c. AfO has incentivised Shigaraki’s hate and rage for all his life in order for Shigaraki to actually be able to undergo his transformation into AfO and to overwrite the will of OfA souls in order to take possess of OfA; d. AfO has understood that he, in his body, could never actually take possession of OfA on his own (because he likely missing in his soul); e. Emotions play a big factor in the Quirk activation/strength.
I talked about AfO and his mask, and shallowly about his character right at the beginning here. But Hawks's remark about him not stopping smiling even for a second, and the hypothesis that maybe AfO does not feel hate (or anything for that matter) spiked my attention even more, because this is the sort of further proof that AfO, in the end, has worn his mask in so long - that he likely dissociated from his persona as a Shigaraki.  In particular, this paragraph (taken from the linked post) writes:
[...] However, there are some clues here and there which tell us that as powerful and atrocious AFO may have been in the past (even more than now), he is not only a big mastermind but he is obsessed by certain ideas and values and he has warped them so much that behind that mask of villain, of AfO, there is nothing left of human in him. That he is unredeemable and that the loss (or lack) of his facial features [potato face] might be an externalisation not only of the experimentation and the salvaging that the Doc has done on him, but as well of the blurred line between his human part (older brother who wanted, even with the abuse and the abominable things he has done, to ‘save’ his little brother) and the part that defines him as AfO.
Indeed, it does not make sense that AfO, with his 'dream' being becoming the next Demon Lord, would need a piece in order to accomplish his goals. It does not fit the thematic of AfO being selfish and caring only about his own interests (argument which I am afraid can be debunked by his life long partnership with Ujiko and the fact that despite he inhuman treatment he subjected Yoichi to, he still gave him a stockpiling Quirk, however weak and controversial they might be).
AfO is like a circle: he begins and ends with himself.  It is abundantly made clear how he does not care, not really, about what is on his path: he didn't care about mistreating his brother, he didn't care about saving Shigaraki, he didn't care about All Might surviving their encounter -  because it all defies his personal view of the world as his playground.
Tumblr media
Of course, this reasoning comes back to Hawks argument: that he does not feel anything (nor hate, nor love - he does not have any morals) and that's exactly why his Quirk is the only thing he relies on. AfO knows perfectly how other than that, there is nothing else to him: he just wants, he just needs and it is others' responsibility to satisfy his needs (if he cannot strive for it alone, as in the case of OfA).
The fact that it took AfO so long to realise that he had to use a vessel to accomplish his mission, might have to do also with the fact that the ones holding onto the power the longest were Shinomori (who held it for 18 years, hiding) and Toshinori, before passing it to Izuku. Which means that the power had been transferred to individuals in rapid succession, and AfO had little time (or will) to investigate on how to obtain the power (without forcing it through his Quirk) and rather focused on eliminating the threat OfA as an embodied power represented. In this case, it is highly likely that it is after or during Nana's period that AfO realised how important emotions were, and how family could be such a perfect emotional ploy (and this was likely due only to the fact that Nana tried so hard to hide her family). After all, he, as himself, as a Shigaraki, did not feel anything in the first place - and he likely thought that what he was doing steamed out of brotherly love, or concern - while in reality AfO has been weaving the threads of his egoism since the beginning. An egoism born out of the only possible concern that he might had experienced: the one for himself. We see it in the simple statements he makes throughout the manga; he is never shown angry, pissed or disappointed - but instead he has a serene, mysterious aura around himself reeking of devil intent.
What is worse in this scenario, however, is that AfO throughout identifies with his quirk.
And on a personal level, I think that point e, has all to do with this identification. The thing is, AfO's Quirk presupposes (but does not limit) him to be selfish. After all, even the name is just a short story on how AfO's like might have been since the beginning and how he adjusted to the pace of wanting to have it, and then having it - having power over someone else, and have nothing to account for/to.
As AfO is not a man anymore, and does not feel anything unless it is related to the quirk, he becomes his figure and shadow. It has no limits and bounds when it comes to darkness: a lost figure in his own ideals and principles (maybe dreams) that have nothing to appeal to but his villain side, because there is nothing left. And as Horikoshi is a man that lives for the sake of a (questionably) good parallel, it is not far-fetched to see how since the beginning Izuku should have served a foil, and also as a contrast breaker with AfO. More than AM, Izuku embodies the unselfish desire to save others, to give (contrasting to take) and to trust. AfO is the epitome of taking for himself, and to destroy for a personal reason - being trusted and revered. Furthermore, Izuku is himself a vessel for OfA, and his other Quirks open him the world of heroics, where on the other hand - we see AfO being the one taking other Quirks for the selfish reason to take, and that's all there is to it.
Tumblr media
Another parallel - which comes across as fitting, even if for a mere split second, is the one with Muscular. Muscular - or Gotou Imasuji - has nothing else but his bloodlust, his will to live at his prime and the will to express his aggressive vein in the most destructive way possible. But even on this account, Muscular appears way too emotional for AfO (and maybe this could be one of the reason AfO does not have any need for him? Because he does not have a higher goal, and there is nothing which AfO might offer him, which he couldn't obtain by himself or through his quirk?).
Tumblr media
Coming onto the main point of this post: if AfO needs Shigaraki for the only reason to steal OfA, because he himself cannot possibly accomplish it and the conversation among the Top 3 hints at the fact that this might have to do with something missing in his soul (or in my guess, emotions - on which Quirks highly depend) which prejudices his possibility of hijacking OfA, thing that he hadn't realised until OfA stabilised itself in Yagi - (and here my best guess is that AfO entirely lacks the emotions of empathy, compassion and love, passing through the possibility of Alexithymia, which would be interesting to explore, in regard to how Quirks affect mental health of every individual) - and taking into consideration how unaffected AfO is by the external conditions that he experiences, and the fact that hate is one of the strongest emotions which can be felt, as raw as it is (and we know how AfO groomed Tomura into festering the negative emotions because he needed them to be strong enough to overwrite the positive feelings on eight people at the least) - it is safe to assume that AfO's downfall will be tied to his soul-missing piece and to his former identity as a Shigaraki? Is this a very complicated foreshadowing to tell us that, contrary to other villains and especially Tomura, AfO is bound to go down exactly because he has never experienced negative feelings, (hate, pain, despair, rage) and has never touched his hand (sorry, I did not intend the pun) how there is something desperately wrong with the world he lives in?

All Might/Yagi Toshinori - Omega (headcanons)
A/N: A ‘Thank You’ to the anons & people commenting on the bbakugou Alpha-headcanons that wanted to see Omega!All Might/Toshi. This helps dealing with the writers block alot. So thank you, loves
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* Being the No. 1 Hero for so many years has it's price
* Because of Toshi's ambition to be a Symbol of Peace, he told himself that he would wait to start a family till crime would no longer exist
* This meant always taking heat suppressants and wearing scent blockers
* The only people who knew at that point were Shimura Nana and Gran Torino
* Whenever he got asked about his second gender, he would say: "My second gender is to keep the people safe", because it's in his nature to protect and comfort
* Before his injury he would rarily nest, just enough with one blanket and a cushy pillow to be comforted when the pressure of saving Japan would become too high
* Because of his comforting presence and strength, people simply assumed he was an Alpha
* And Toshi himself never delved into what being an Omega meant, always thinking that when the world was right, he could start a family to love
* But during the examination after his big fight with All For One, the doctors told him that because of his injury and years of being on suppressants he would not be able to have any pups
* This was a very dark time in Toshi's life
* He felt like something was missing, like he had failed somewhere
* And instead of dealing with the problem, he just focused on how he could still be the no.1 Hero and keep his Small Might form a secret
* QUE YOUNG MIDORIYA! THIS BOY!
* Toshi could sense that the young boy was an Omega
* When he finally gave in and started training him to be the next OFA-holder, he hoped he could guide this young Omega to make better decisions that he did in his youth
* Now, to the public he was still All Might, no. 1 Hero and suspected Alpha
* But in his Small Might form, he was so confused
* He felt this strong need to protect young Midoriya (and the rest of the students, of course) that seeing them in danger would make him feel almost feral
* The feeling of a safe space after a hard day to crawl up in and shut out the world growing every day
* The sense of pride when young Midoriya passes a test getting stronger
* He doesn't know what any of this means, since he never allowed himself to actually be the proper Omega that he is
* When his second fight with AFO exposes him in Small Might form, the truth about him being an Omega comes out too and to his surprise, people are very supportive and understanding
* So, he reads up on what being an Omega means; Nesting, nurturing young
*He carries both 'Teaching for Dummies' & 'Omega 101' around on him
* Deep down inside he's still insecure about his abilities as an Omega and it isn't until he's holding young Bakugou in his arms and comforting him that he realises that this is what his Omega wants
* All his Omega ever wanted was someone to care for
* Toshi and Aizawa, also an Omega, are now known as Class 1A's mother hens
* The people he saved as a Hero make his Omega feel pleased, but saving and caring for his students make his Omega feel proud
* He finally starts nesting; big blankets for this Tall Man, thick matresses on the floor, thick comforters and scented candles
* (He also has a sign at the entrance of his nest saying 'I AM HERE (nesting)')
* He stops wearing scent blockers and people at UA can often smell a faint chamomile and honey scent from afar
* At the age of 49 he felt like a true Omega for the first time
* During intense training classes he packs up a big lunch for his students so they're all well fed
* When he takes a students aside to talk about what's troubling them, he finds himself releasing calming pheromones to ease his student
* You think that just because he can't use OFA anymore that villains can just attack his stundents and get away with it? NAH! Think again, sweetie
* This man will go ballistic, villains WILL feel his wrath, he will personally skin them if they hurt his babies
* Because that's what they are to Toshi and his Omega; they're all his children
* He may not have giving life to these young ones, but they still feel a little like his own pups
* His Omega finally got the family they always wanted
* PS: Just imagine the feeling of humiliation Alpha!Endeavor feels when he finds out an Omega was a better hero than him all these years. Natsuo was having a field day. Dabi was so happy that Toga thought he was broken
MY HERO ACADEMIA CHAPTER 317 META :
On surpassing childhood heroes and finding ourselves with the help of our friends and family.
Okay my friends, do you remember when I talked about how Dabi and Hawks needed to surpass ir get over Endeavor?
If you don't, then let me make it short for you. Basically I said that Dabi and Hawks are still trapped in the memory of what Endeavor was and that makes them at least a little blind to the present, and specially to the future.
In order to be redeemed, Dabi first needs to heal. That means he needs some help to go pass the harm Endeavor caused him. He needs to be acknowledged, he needs someone that understands his story to help him see there are other options, options where he has a real future, not just dying or rotting in jail. He has a life, he has people that is willing to walk that road with him, he's worthy. And Endeavor was an abuser, yes, but he's meeting (hopefully) his justice and he's not able to hurt him anymore, not as he used to. He needs to get passed Endeavor being his childhood hero (and nightmare), but never forget.
Hawks goes on a slightly different road. Even when he understands many things about reality and Endeavor, he's still basing his value system on what Endeavor made him feel as a child. It's not the person he can't let go of, but the idea. Now, this is problematic in the sense that society is changing, the whole hero system is changing. He's so young and full of life, he still has time. He thinks he doesn't, he thinks his time is over. That's not true. However, Hawks needs to focus on the present and the future, needs to find his rebirth in the hands of the new generations and situations, not in the past.
On that post, the one I was talking about a few paragraphs above, I take Izuku for my example. And then Horikoshi just proved me a bit right with chapter 317 of the manga.
(spoilers under the cut )
If you've read the chapter, you know it was intense. We saw a different Deku, one that doesn't go to UA and doesn't even look like a hero. He doesn't smile, the light in his eyes is gone, and do you know who hs reminds me of?
Yes, Shigaraki Tomura.
Nice touch, because it keeps the emphasis o the parallel between Tomura and Izuku. If you want to read more about this, search in the tags of my blog. I've talk a lot about it.
Deku, who hasn't been taking care of himself correctly, even rejected All Might through a very symbolic scene. All Might, the hero he based his entire life in, was worried about him, offering food. Deku told him he doesn't need to worry anymore, implied that he's already surpassing Toshinori. Deku takes off, leaving Toshinori on his knees, with the bento on the ground, forgotten.
That takes us to the first part of this meta: Surpassing childhood heroes.
This is not exclusive of Izuku, let's clarify that. This whole path began with the very first chapter, when All Might saw in Deku something he has forgotten. He saw something new, the possibility of Deku doing what he never could.
It was the same with All Might and Nana Shimura, or with Lemillion and Nighteye, for example. Legacy, yes, but also going beyond the figure that made you who you are— or were.
An essencial part of growing up is understanding that the people you admired as a kid are not perfect. You can stay within their lines, because at least as a hero you have a duty with the public: you need to do your best, which means you need to try and do better than the ones before you. All Might is a great dude with great problems. He did many things wrong, because he's human and human do things wrong all the time, they can't avoid it. Still, he's responsible for all his mistakes, no one else can take the blame for that.
Deku wanted to be a hero when he didn't know what it implied. He didn't know the system was so corrupted, he was just a kid. So, when can't just be the type of hero he wanted to be. It wouldn't feel right. I believe the story won't allow him either.
There's nothing wrong with Deku surpassing All Might. Yes, he looks exhausted, but that was expected. He's like 16 years old and he's already the pro-heroes against a terrible being. Not just that, he also has to deal with all the knowledge he's getting. That surely is wearing his heart out. He's growing up really fast, becoming a man and getting through all the trauma. It's the war effect.
Shigraki Tomura went through this phase too. He has grown pass AFO. He's not under his control anymore, but he's still being held back. Violently.
In this shonen, Deku is our role model, right? Keep that in mind.
Now, since I've already told you that Deku is not going to be the hero he was going to be when this whole manga started, what about the name? How is this "My Hero Academia"?
Second part, everyone: finding ourselves with the help of our friends and family.
What does this even mean? Well, dear reader, not matter how hard we try, there are things we can't do alone. Overcoming a mental illness, redeeming ourselves, becoming who we want to be... We need support. We need someone to help us stay strong.
I believe that the title "My Hero Academia" refers to Deku's Hero Academia, at least in this meta. This means, this is the story of how Deku learned to be a hero. And that how it's about the old generations, pro-heroes and other figures in his life, yes, but it is only the first step.
The first time Deku acted as a hero was to save Bakugo Katsuki. Then he did it again to save Uraraka Ochaco. To save Todoroki Shoto, etc.
The point is, the teachers and pro-heroes and adult figures in Izuku's life inspired him, but they didn't teach him how to be a hero. The ones always pushing Deku farther, the ones making Deku behave like a real hero, are the younger generations, specially his classmates.
Deku needs his friends. He needs to understand he doesn't have to do everything alone (All Might's mistake) and he needs to understand that this is not just his fight. His friends are family have the right to fight to, they have the right to know what's going on. He can't just do like Endeavor, who pushed his family to the front line and then told them they could not follow him anymore.
The difference between the old generations and the new ones is that these kids have been fighting together since day one. They overcome whatever comes their way by pushing through together. Take Tsuyu and Deku with the first accident at UA. Take the kids during the summer camp, during the license exam, during the war. In a parallel, take Shigaraki Tomura and the League of Villains. They were few, but they reached the top by doing things together.
Deku needs to go beyond, but he can't forget who he is and where he came from. He can surpass All Might, but he doesn't have to completely reject him or leave him behind forever. He needs to act based on the present, but he needs to keep the past close, because the road that take him where he is, that's the road that makes him strong.
There are two lessons in here. Remember this is a meta and it's only my opinion. I can be wrong, you can add whatever you want to this or refute it. I'd love to hear what you think about this!
But well, the first lesson is that you can't live in the past. You can't live in a memory. Yes, maybe that dude rescued you or let you to die somewhere. Yes, maybe the hurt will never go away, maybe you'll never heal completely, but you can't stay there. Living in the past is the same as dying. You can remember it, but then stay in there forever.
The second lesson is that you can become the best you, the hero you or whatever, but you need people to help you. Maybe it's just one person, maybe it's a whole group, but you need someone. Bakugo could have ended up like Endeavor (in the sense of being obsessed with the first place and forgetting to be a decent human being) if it wasn't for his friends at UA. Shoto would have been trapped in his memories if it wasn't for Izuku, etc.
Don't worry, Deku is on his way to be a great hero. At some point, someone is gonna slap him or shake him out of that edgyness. And once the class 1-A and the other kids are set in motion, once they decide it's them (together as one) against all (the quirks of AFO), this is going to become My Hero Academia again.
This is something I question a lot and maybe it just hasn’t hit me. What would you say All Mights relationship towards Endeavor is like? I would think he would dislike him for abusing Shouto or being so rough and competitive. And yet regardless, he seems neutral, somewhat sympathetic towards him enough to give him advices, worry for him when he got badly injured, and encouraged Midoriya and Bakugou to take an internship with him. So what exactly does he think of him?
It's weird but thinking about it, I don't think All Might has shown any genuine dislike for anyone but AfO or Shigaraki during USJ. I doubt he likes other villains, but seems to take them out because it's his job/to protect others, not because he personally hates them.
I don't think he really noticed Endeavor much before he retired. They talked while working together on join missions probably but considering how focused All Might was on being the Symbol of Peace and literally being everywhere, saving as many people as possible, it's doubtful he really understood Endeavor's dislike of him. He also could have even seen his rude attitude as Endeavor's public persona, not his actual personality. Either way it doesn't seem like Toshinori gave him a huge amount of thought, past seeing him as a fellow coworker.
After Toshinori retired he payed more attention to him, probably realizing the huge burden he left Enji with. He's never been the type of guy to turn someone away if they needed help and so he was happily gave Endeavor advice when he asked for it. Plus, I'm sure he wanted to help Endeavor succeed because it means people stay safe. If Enji fails, people will get scared and things could get bad for everyone--a fear Toshinori has had for a while.
All Might was also worried about him when he got hurt by the Nomu, most likely remembering his own injury he got from AfO and fearing the same could happen to Endeavor. Even if he didn't like Endeavor, it's hard to watch someone get beaten bloody, especially when you know the life long pain they could end up suffering as a result.
As for Shoto's abuse, it's hard to say how he feels about it or how much he knew/suspected before Dabi's broadcast. He picked up that Shoto didn't like his father, but it's not necessarily a given that that means abuse (or at least physical abuse, which is generally the only kind that will get kids removed from a household). He could have asked, but in Japan that can be seen as prying and rude (take how Aizawa suspected Iida was going to go after Stain, but approved his internship anyway and never really asked about his emotional state).
And, yes, Shoto has a scar, but Horikoshi kind of doesn't treat it as if it's there most of the time. Like no one even bats an eye at it, not even Izuku, until Shoto tells him how he got it. Horikoshi doesn't treat it how it inevitably would be if it were RL because that would sort of ruin his story. Being a celebrity, the entire incident with Rei would be public knowledge--no HPSC secret cover up would work, because anyone seeing Shoto would be wondering where he got it, and what happened to Enji's wife. Even if the abuse from Enji was covered up, everyone would know it was his mom that burned him--but that just doesn't make an interesting character reveal.
So, if the first time All Might learned of the abuse, how does that effect how he feels about Enji?
Well, we don't know. Unfortunately we haven't really gotten much insight into how anyone really sees Enji now that the abuse is known. Seemingly Hawks and BJ are fine with him, after making sure he's not still hurting Shoto, but it's not like they have much choice but to put any negative feelings it gives them on the back burner anyway. Japan is literally struggling not to collapse as a country, everyone is homeless now, and has to be held in shelters to protect them from wandering gangs of villains, including serial killers. They have limited resources and helping hands. If they have some negative feelings about Enji being a past abuser they don't really have the time to or luxury to express them--he's their strongest guy and they need his help.
This same idea applies to All Might. He doesn't really have any choice but to work with Enji. He can't protect Izuku or help him fight on his own--all he can do is give him dinner. But, honestly, past Toshinori letting the top three shadow Izuku, we haven't had any real interaction between Enji and him, so who knows how he feels about Dabi's broadcast and Enji admitting to the abuse. until we get that, it's really hard to say what their relationship is now.
If its okay I would like to say something about the anti All Might drama? I do think it was way out of line for anon to come at you like that. This is coming from someone who pays for art my self insert and Toshi, he is an incredibly flawed character. Flaws aren't always narcissistic, or selfish or super controlling. Flaws in a character can be something like incredibly self sacrificing to the point you destroy your own body. Its because of his own self consciousness and need to be valued as a person that Toshi would stay up for days before resting, and even then it was because his body could not continue on, as we see in Vigilantes where he falls unconscious mid leap across town cause of exhaustion.
And it's okay to admit these flaws and still like him! That's a part of good story telling, is flawed characters still being loved because they feel more real. I do question the use of the word "grooming" when it comes to his relationship with Izuku because it's already established that Izuku wants to save everyone and is willing to sacrifice himself for that to happen. Toshi saw that same self sacrificing spirit and saw a younger version of himself, also wanting to save everyone. Neither of them realized how dangerous this could be.
Let me clarify, as an adult Toshi should know better. He can see for himself where that mentality got him, with a missing lung and stomach. However, I think Toshi genuinely believed that Izuku would stay safe no matter who he went up against with OFA. At the start of the series AFO has been dead for 5 years (as far as Toshi and the audience knew) and was the only one who could injure him.  No other villains ever came close to hurting Toshi. He was always faster, stronger, and smarter. He saw the same traits in Izuku and thought he would be perfect to carry on the duties of being a real hero.
Toshi still left the decision making up to Izuku. He had stated on the rooftop that he couldn't tell Izuku to be a hero because hes seen what happens to people who aren't strong enough to fight villains. In his career I'm sure hes seen more than one person get killed trying to do the right thing, and this boy he barely knows, who he just saved from death even, is saying he wants to be "just like him". And so Toshi tells him no, and to think of a more realistic life goal. This was the right call as an adult in this situation. Obviously Toshi isn't going to just hand his quirk over to the first person he meets who says they want to be like him, he gets that everyday no doubt.
But Izuku suprised him and made him rethink his words, and even offer to train him, something Toshi has never done. It is Izuku who agrees to training and taking on OFA even with Toshi admitting to him it's going to be super hard. He has no hold over the kid when offering this. Izuku saw that day how dangerous coming into contact with villains is and Toshi doesn't do any kind of manipulation.
I saw it mentioned in another analysis once that even after they both realized how bad their situation is (with AFO back and Izuku being unable to control his power) that at that point Toshi could have quit on Izuku. Could have made him give OFA back or to another student like Mirio. It would have been a more responsible, safe thing to do at the time, but would have led Izuku down a dark path. The writer had made a comparison of Izuku ending up like Dabi, who's father was grooming him and quit on him the moment it seemed like it was a bad idea to continue. Just like Dabi, Izuku's quirk hurts him, but Toshi actually helps him work through that and learn to control it. Could you imagine how devastated Izuku would be if After all his hard work and training Toshi just said "nevermind give me OFA back, I'll give it to someone else"?
I think Toshi was aware of this and is why he dedicated himself to teaching Izuku. Sorry for such a long analysis, I wanted to give my thoughts on a couple of the topics being discussed.
(DD's response)
You're analysis is fair and i agree with a lot of your points. To clarify some of my wording regarding grooming, i did say that Toshi was grooming Midoriya. Grooming can be seen in many different ways, unfortunately in our world we see it more as a way to exploit and abuse children to make them do sexual acts, but in the context you yourself present its not in that context.
Endeavor groomed Dabi to be the person to surpass him and All Might out his obsession with the man and his need to beat him. We can see the full extent of it in the recent volumes with a full back story.
As for All Might, the grooming statement i based it off of the source Child Advocacy Centres of Alberta which holds a list of the stages of grooming of a child as well as the NSPCC own definition of child grooming. I agree that Midoriya had his self sacrificing personality way before All Might came into his life physically and that All Might didn't give up on him and helped him with his quirk development to the best of his ability. Toshinori be it in his attempt did fail to make sure that Midoriya kept safe within a limit, Aizawa and Torino being the ones to recommend and enforce Midoriya stick to what he could do and slowly build up to a higher potential, which lead to Midoriya's injuries.
Just wanted to clarify the grooming part but i do agree with your analysis and it was honestly refreshing to hear/read someone else's opinions. As for the anon that was sending those comment, i haven't seen them in my inbox and the original person apologized for the comment they left. I have no issue with the commentator but anon was a bit out of line with their words. Thats in the past now but please feel free to use my inbox for your analysis in the future. I will admit i look at people with a darker intention so my analysis usually looks into that but i also try to give redemption from time to time. I don't think you'll ever find me trying to give Overhaul or AFO redemption but everyone else is free game.
Thank you for sending in your personal analysis!💜
