People like to use "coded" as an excuse to harrass others over a fictional character

"this character is minor-coded therefor if you like them or draw them sexy then you are a pedo"

"this character is gay-coded so if you ship them qith the opposite gender your homophobic"

"this character is autism-coded so if you dont see them that way you are ableist."

"this character is poc coded and if you dont portray them that way then you are racist"

And then they go and rip people to shreds over it. And most of the time they are actually "coded" as anything.

Ill give you a good example as to why coding should just fucking die in fandom.

In transformers (all of them afaik) there is a sentient ROBOT named Jazz. He is often voiced by a black voice actor, even in the early days of Generation 1 in 1984. Though it changes a few times Jazz is well known for his accented voice. Jazz (the music) is also known to be pioneered by black people.

In a way jazz is black coded. He is designed with all these elements related to black people.

The thing is. Jazz is a fucking robot. "Jazz" is the name he chose for himself because his cybertronian name does not translate or cannot be spoken by humans. Jazz is also a type of music he only heard when he arrived on earth and is something he loves, hence why he chose the name. He chooses to express himself in such a way because its what he enjoys.

It does not mean he is black. A white person can do all that because they have a love for jazz music. It isnt going to make them "black coded"

He is also again, a robot. Not human. Not even organic.

However of all the problems ive seen in the TF fandom the one about whether you should draw a human version of Jazz as black or white is probably the one thats sets people who give a shit off the most.

It doesn't matter what characteristics a character has. It doesnt matter if Jazz is drawn as black or white. Cuz he isn't human. Its literally up to fan interpretation and none of them are wrong but people want to shit fling, and react hostile over others not drawing him as black anyway.

Same could be said about a certain more popular pink skinned character (who is also human and japanese but when have people ever viewed japanese people as important.)

You can have your queer coded villains. Doesn't actually say they are queer. Hell in the past it would be done as a way to demonize queerness and traits. But queer people still loved those villains because they could relate to their tragedies.

What "coding" actually is, is a part of the design process to add depth and character. It's an inspiration born from reality. But it's not always that the character is meant to be that thing.

Theres a character from genshin impact i could say is "DID-coded" because when she falls alseep or is so stressed she passes out there is another version of her that takes her place that she doesnt know about.

In the same vein theres the game "At Dead of Night" (recommend it, its a horror game) where the main antagonist is possessed and murders people. They even had to put a disclaimer that the character didnt have DID and the game wasnt made to demonize people with DID or portray them as unstable serial killers. However despite the creators saying that, fans still "DID-code" the antagonist, not out of hatred for people with DID but because some people with DID still relate to the character. Not so much the killing people but the struggle the antagonist has with "being possessed". Having DID can be a frustrating and tiring experience and not many cope with it very well even when they do no harm. Feeling of loss of control is very relatable even without DID.

Regardless the rampant "coding everything trend" in fandom has caused a new "ship war" like wave of harrassment. If you dont view a character this was your a horrible person and you deserve *insert graphic content and threats of harm and suibaiting and more*

coding can be a cool thing to discover while analyzing a character or even creating one. But its become hated with good reason because people have no reason left in them. Coding is a cool way of adding depth and nuance to a character and would actually REALLY help beginners with their "bland" characters. Unfortunately even thats discouraged, since it can be seen as "baiting" or "stereotyping" and sometimes appropriating culture. (But a giant sentient robot making his entire personality about jazz music isn't? Lol)

ok this one's both backlist and was very popular when it came out but probably most 25 year old tumblr users have not read it. well they should read the hare with amber eyes by edmund de waal for a deep DEEP dive into the complicated world of rich jewish art collectors + socialites in odesa, vienna, and paris in the 1800s through the early 1900s by tracing the object history of a collection of netsuke from the opening of japan through the changing landscape of central + western europe and then back to japan [nonfiction/art history]

i wanna hear about the simon aroace beam pls

(Tumblr is apparently trying to silence me because this is the second time I'm writing out this answer. Anyway.)

I already made a post about my aroace Simon headcanons several years ago, but I'm more than happy to talk about it again. (Also I'm not sure if you specifically ever beat SOMA, so you're probably unfamiliar with some of the points I made in the aforementioned post. I'll do my best to explain.)

Simon is an interesting character because he's an everyman. I often joke about how he's Just Some Guy who's having the worst day ever. He's had a pretty average life (aside from the recent loss of his friend and traumatic brain injury), and it doesn't come up often in the text of the game. He brings it up sometimes, but it isn't the focus of his dialogue. He was thrust from an unremarkable life in 2015 into Undersea Robot Hell and is forced to make some serious decisions about the fate of the human race, so he has other priorities.

His characterization as an everyman combined with the fact that we don't actually know a lot about his life before the events of SOMA make Simon a very easy character to project your own experiences onto. This makes him a good fit for a video game protagonist because it makes it easy for the player to relate to him. It also means that it's easy to fill in the blanks of his characterization with your own ideas. I've personally seen lots of different interpretations of his gender and sexuality; I've seen people headcanon him as straight, gay, bisexual, etc etc. His gender is also an entire can of worms; I've seen people make compelling arguments that he's a trans man, a trans woman, and even nonbinary and agender.

Anyway... this was all preface for my thesis that Simon is aroace. The easy explanation is that I, an aroace person, find it easy to project my own experiences on to him in a way that makes sense to me. I've talked to a few other aroace SOMA fans about this, and they've agreed. (This is what I mean by the aroace beam. I simply enjoy headcanoning characters I like as aroace, because I, too, am aroace. I'm hitting them with my beam attack. Metaphorically. I've now rendered the joke unfunny by explaining it.)

(Side note- there's a running joke in the SOMA server I run that many SOMA fans are asexual. There certainly are a number of them in that specific server, however this also might be confirmation bias, because I haven't done a fandom-wide survey or anything like that. It also might be because I promote the server heavily on my blog, and as an openly aroace person, I probably have a statistically significant amount of aspec followers who are then compelled to join the server I help run. More research is required, I guess.)

The longer explanation for this headcanon is that, within the text of the game, Simon doesnt' appear to be very concerned with sex or romance.

In the dream sequence at the beginning of the game, Simon tells Ashley he wants to tell her something, and she responds with "please don't make this weird". A lot of people tend to interpret this as Simon working up the courage to tell Ashley he has a crush on her. The scene ends abruptly before this can be confirmed. However, there are a few unused voice lines in the game files that extend the scene a bit. Simon was originally supposed to say "I'm sorry" to Ashley before the dream ended. This implies that he wanted to apologize to her for involving her in the car accident that ended her life, not confess a crush.

There is another dream sequence later in the game, the context being that Simon is under the influence of the WAU and is being shown an idealized version of his life. He sees Ashley, alive and standing in his apartment, where she declares that the two of them are in love. Simon seems confused about this and wakes up shortly after.

I will admit that this scene implies he has romantic feelings for her. However, in the post I made a few years ago, I talked about how a common experience for a lot of aroace people is not being able to distinguish between different types of attraction and how this can lead to aces convincing themselves that they have a crush on someone when what they really desire is a platonic relationship:

I think what sells it the most for me is that, during the dream sequence with Ashley, when Ashley tells him that they’re a couple, he sounds confused. You could interpret this as general confusion (he doesn’t know how Ashley is suddenly alive again or why they’re suddenly in a relationship), but I like to think that he’s conflicted about his feelings for her. He knows he wants to be close to her, but he’s not sure if being a romantic couple is exactly what he wants. If the dream sequence is supposed to be an idealized scenario, then why is he conflicted about the thing he supposedly wants?

Simon strikes me as the type of guy who isn’t super informed about LGBT stuff. He probably knows a little bit about general LGBT stuff, but maybe hasn’t learned about asexuality, or he doubts that it could apply to him. He might think that, because he wants to be close with Ashley, that the next logical step would be a romantic relationship, even if his feelings are actually just platonic. (I know from personal experience growing up asexual that I would sometimes invent crushes on people, when in reality my feelings were just platonic and I actually just wanted to be their friend. From what I’ve heard, this is a common experience for a lot of aro and ace people from before they learned about asexuality/aromanticism.)

I recognize that this interpretation might be bending canon a bit. Occam's razor would imply that he simply has a romantic crush on Ashley, but that's no fun.

SOMA is a game that is, overall, pretty uninterested in exploring romantic or sexual relationships. It also features two main characters of different genders (Simon and Catherine) who develop a strong platonic relationship over the course of the game. I, personally, find it a breath of fresh air, especially when a lot of science fiction and cyberpunk stories have a heavy emphasis on sex. (I'm definitely not bitter about all the weird sexism present in cyberpunk novels like Neuromancer, for example...)

I suppose it makes sense, then, that the game would have a sizeable amount of aroace fans. I personally think there is something inherently queer about the game- although not explicit in the text, transhumanist stories like SOMA can be read as metaphors for queer experiences. Questioning one's identity and humanity is something that a lot of LGBT people do on a regular basis, so it makes perfect sense that they would relate to a character from a game exploring those topics, albeit through a science fiction lens.

Anyway. Very, very long story short, I hit Simon with my aroace beam attack because I think it's fun. He means a lot to me and I like thinking about him.

(Don't get me started on what I think about his gender. He's got so much going on in that department and absolutely no time to come to terms with it all. That's a post for another day.)

I watched Foundation S1-2 this week and really enjoyed it, for certain values of enjoyed, copying over my write-up from DW, now with corrected character names since I've looked them up rather than spelling them from vague osmosis from the show.

(Blacklist the Foundation tag if you don't want to be spoiled from gifs, as I plan to promptly go seek out the least hinged gifs from this entirely unhinged show and bombard everyone with them.)

This show is a bonkers SF soap opera with gorgeous production values, Lee Pace hamming it up in crop tops, and a series of increasingly off the rails holographic versions of a dead chessmaster mathematician deploying his 9999-step plan to save the galaxy. I've literally seen nothing about this at all in my social circles, to the extent that I didn't even really know about it until the spouse started watching it. I was kind of halfway glancing at the screen now and then, if I happened to be in the room, for the first half of season one (and have only the vaguest idea what happened in the first few episodes, based on later events), then got invested and eventually completely hooked in season two, which also picks up after a 100-year timeskip so the cast has changed a lot anyway. Although between stasis pods, cloning, and holograms, it's mostly the same actors. (We have a running joke that by season 3 the cast will be at least 50% Cleons and Hari Seldons by volume.)

Anyway, so it is good? Hard to say! It's sort of like if Expanse and Game of Thrones had a (somewhat more optimistic) baby, in which the budgets are huge, the planets are beautiful, the spaceships are shiny, and lots of Big Feelings happen. The Evil Empire is run by an endless series of clone emperors played by Lee Pace in Romanesque armor and capes with massive amounts of scenery-chewing and an immortal robot bodyguard he occasionally has sex with. They have All The Clones in storage, so if he gets killed, they'll just transfer his memories and activate another one! Meanwhile the rebellion is being orchestrated as a 4000-step multi-century Xanatos gambit by a guy who started by having himself killed and activating a digital copy. Interestingly though, there is so much going on, and it's taking so much time for his plan to come to fruition, that it never really feels like the two of them directly pitted against each other (at least not that much), it's more like all of the stuff that happens along the way, the planets and the pretty spaceships and the people we meet who struggle and fight and save each other along the way.

I have to say that while I'm occasionally reminded by certain plot points and tropes that this is a series based on books from the 1970s, they did a good enough job with racebending, presumable genderbending, and so forth that it rarely feels like it. (Also, though I only know the books from general osmosis, I'm fairly confident the plot has gone way off-book anyway.) In season two there are no less than four young female characters of color in major plot-defining roles, there's a central gay couple whose loyalty to each other in the face of the Empire is a major plot point, and in general it's just a pretty, pretty show full of pretty people and pretty planets (and occasionally some really dazzling space-operatic SF stuff). It is definitely the most OTT and operatic thing I've watched since probably the MCU, and I'm really enjoying it.

Under the cut, out-of-order and largely out-of-context comments on various things I had a reaction to (mostly season 2 since that's where I got invested).

This show is an emotional roller coaster of the highest order. How many different instances of presumed dead and identity-switching can we pack into a single episode?

CONSTANT MY BELOVED. Season 2 in general gives great female characters, I already loved Salvo (;__;) and I also really enjoyed the ladies from the Cloud Dominion, but Constant!! She's just so funny and fun and so absolutely deadpan about everything from conning randos on some backwater alien planet to kidnapping a guy. I was so glad she lived through all of the half-dozen times she almost certainly should have died.

I was surprisingly upset about formerly-trapped-in-the-Radiant half-crazy Hari's death, "surprisingly" because, well, Hari being Hari, and also, it wasn't like this leaves us entirely without Hari Seldons, there's still Creepy Monolith Hari and who knows how many other copies out there. But that one had been through enough with Gaal and Salvor that he really felt like a different person. He's still a manipulative sack of dicks but I liked him! I was sad, but at least hoping he was backed up somewhere! And then two episodes later the most excellent reveal that he and Gaal faked the whole thing! I thoroughly loved all of that. Gaal hugging him! <333

"Don't trust the planet of the creepy utopian space psychics!" Orion and I were chanting at the screen, while they proceeded to not listen to us and it was, predictably, a bad idea. Seriously, when in all of sci-fi was trusting the creepy psychic utopia a good idea?

I had guessed/hoped that the guy with the whispership (can't remember his name) was going to warp into the plaza and save Constant from execution, but I really wasn't sure, and even with an inkling it was going to happen, that was an AMAZING entrance, A+++, no notes. Especially after Constant gave her speech and everything seemed to be setting her up to be a martyr to the Foundation, I was less and less hopeful she was going to get out of it alive somehow. Excellent rescue, very pleased.

I really enjoyed the entire subplot with the Evil Empire Honorable Space Admiral (can't remember anyone's names here either) and the scene in which he justifies his continued loyalty to the Empire is really a good scene. I mean, it's awful. But you can see his reasoning. He can't overthrow the Empire, if he refuses orders it won't change anything, he and everyone he loves will die, and someone else will be put in his place and follow the orders anyway. But then the whole thing with Constant's rescue points out that it may not be possible to change the entire Evil Empire, but you can make a lot of difference for just one person.

But I still wanted him to make better or at least different choices on the blowing up the planet sequence! I guess it all worked out according to Hari's 9999-step plan (my death is only the beginning! the death of my planet is only the beginning!) but that hurted.

Between Honorable Space Admiral and his fighter pilot husband, I was absolutely *not* expecting the husband to be the one of the two of them that survived. However, Honorable Space Admiral and whispership guy got a dynamite final episode (the fistfight with Cleon! never has a man deserved so much punching! the airlock switch!) and they both got to go out in an excellent death scene.

The entire thing with Terminus getting blown up! And then Deus Ex Monolith! And Constant's dads and Space Admiral's Space Husband are alive after the whole exploding planet fell on them! (I was SO happy Constant's family got reunited, I was so afraid she and Space Dads were going to go down each thinking the other one had died.) I think this episode gave me emotional whiplash.

SALVOR NO. WHAT WAS THAT EVEN. She just randomly died at the end there?? Come onnnnn. We already got like 12 death fake-outs in the last couple of episodes! Why'd that one have to be real?!

If time passes differently in the monolith, does that mean the entire rescued Terminus population are still going to be around after the second 150-year timeskip? I have questions!

Speaking of time passing differently in the monolith, best dialogue: Whispership guy: Whoa, it's dark. How long was I in there, anyway? Constant: Three years. Paulie: More like three hours. Constant: We agreed we weren't going to tell him! I love them. <3333

That sure was A Lot with the Cleons. And now I guess there's an entire Cleon/Cloud Dominion dynasty out there somewhere just waiting to cause trouble.

So yeah, I'm really enjoying my bombastic sci-fi soap opera! Season 3 when pls.

Fall 2022 Anime Overview- Gundam: The Witch from Mercury

It’s time to start reviewing the anime I watched in the fall season! There’s some anime I chose to save for later, like Bocchi the Rock! (which I’m watching now and enjoying) and Raven of the Inner Palace, though I’ve heard great things about it and it’s a rare shoujosei adaptation so definitely go check it out! I might do a review of that when I do get to watch it, since it’s been overlooked this season with so many heavy hitters.

But onto what I did watch! And this one has so much to chew on it gets a whole post to itself.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury

A top contender for anime of the year for me. It’s not over yet though, so I pray it sticks the landing with the next season(s).

The anime follows Suletta Mercury, a girl who arrives at a new school (and new planet!) with her giant robot Aerial. Quickly she discovers a girl named Miorine, who’s desperate to escape to Earth because her bigwig father has decreed that people can duel with their giant robots for Miorine’s hand in marriage. Mio is not at all on board with this, especially because her current fiance is an abusive jerk. Suletta confronts the jerk fiance, challenges him to a duel and...well, you can probably guess what happens, especially if you’ve seen Revolutionary Girl Utena.

(And if you haven’t, go watch it! Though look up content warnings if you’ve got specific triggers or don’t often deal with darker media. I’ve got an episode breakdown here!)

Anyway, Gundam said Gay Space Rights.

Meanwhille, Suletta’s mother, Prospera (yes, it’s a codename AND a reference to The Tempest) has a thirst for revenge after a horrible wrong was done to her by the terrible corporation Mio’s dad heads, and has secret plan brewing behind the scenes. There’s alson conflict between Earthlings and the space-faring people who are exploiting them. Meanwhile all poor Suletta wanted to do is make some friends and enjoy a couple of dates!

This anime is so good so far, and was specifically targeted for me in so many ways it’s not funny. A fun cast of characters? Well written queer girls? Shadowy parental manipulation? A protagonist who’s sweet and shy yet supremely dangerous? Good action that’s driven by good character dynamics? Lots of cool women kicking ass? Tangled relationships and tons or well written relationship drama?

I’ve definitely enjoyed a few mecha shows (like Planet With),but I tend to bounce off them, in part because I have a hard time telling what’s happening when robots are fighting and the technobabble starts flowing. That still is occasionally an issue in this show, but because the fights are so driven by character conflict and there’s clear stakes I can follow along with (like the fact using a Gundam for too long is supposed to kill you), it’s not as much as an issue as it usually is. And Gundam knew exactly how to lure me in. The second I heard the whole first episode was a Utena reference, it pulled me in and I’ve enjoyed every second since.

The whole first episode echoing Utena does show the show’s pedigree (the series composer actually wrote the Utena light novels) and offers a little reassurance for audiences hoping it delivers on its queer storylines But the show is no rip-off, and it it very much does its own thing from that point on. Suletta isn’t Utena, and Miorine isn’t Anthy and this is apparent from the first episode. Suletta is achingly insecure, Miorine isn’t resigned to being a bride and has a short temper and abrasive attitude. The show isn’t about gender or compulsory heterosexuality (so far), it just has a lot of complex female characters in a wide variety of roles and has a developing romance between two women as the central relationship.

But like Utena, abuse is a huge theme, but very specifically parental abuse. Both Miorine and Suletta are being used as tools by their parents in a complex political game- Miorine is aware of this (though not the full scope of it, probably) while poor Suletta is very much in the dark. The way the parents use their children is chilling, but not without complexity- there are reasons to sympathize with Prospera, even if her treatment of her daughter is unforgiveable. She feels like a person, even thought we don’t know her full story.

The show also isn’t subtle about it’s political themes!

That particular conflict has been bubbling in the background, but handled well so far (there are some great, more subtle moments, like the news showing the ‘weapons’ from the protest above, which included ‘molotov cocktails’ clearly put there by the police, and...an umbrella.) But even if works have themes I like or agree with, what really matters to me is the characters and if they’re executed well. Fortunately, the show has a loveable cast whose journeys I look forward to with both excitement and trepidation.

Whether it’s the wonderfully angry Chuchu and her legendary [redacted] in episode 4, or the unpredictable arc of what started out as the show’s biggest (teenage) jerk, or seeing the funny romantic rivalries Lilique unwittingly gets entangled in, the show makes you care about these kids.

It’s also, as a side note, the best treatment of fat people I’ve seen in anime. There are a ton of plus-sized people in different roles, and they’re never made fun of (except for one mild comment in a later episode that is quickly shut down, and the person apologizes). Lilique is a chubby girl who’s allowed to just be the cute romantic one of the group and is canonically popular with the boys. Considering how anime is usually the opposite of body-positive, it’s really nice to see.

The central relationship of the show is, of course, Suletta and Miorine. And it’s a really fun relationship to follow. Even with the Utena reference and casual acceptance of gay marriage, I was a little worried about being baited by the show. But I’m happy to say I’m really satisfied with the development of the relationship so far. Both Suletta and Miorine are layered characters, and it’s great to watch the girls’ feelings grow as they miscommunicate and struggle and learn more about each other. We watch what starts as an engagement of convenience grow into a real bond, and root for these girls every step of the way. And yes, they’re bringing the gay.

But the relationship, and the show, is not without its shocking twists, and the very last minute of the last episode of this show left me a puddle on the floor and begging for more.This show can grab your heart and rip it out and you’ll thank them for it.

All I’ll say is fans of fascinating, screwed up women will be happy. I’m certainly happy! For now, at least. I like this show a lot, so I hope it doesn’t screw up it’s second season. It’s built up a lot of trust for me, but I’ve had that trust betrayed before. Such is the curse of being an anime fan, and a fan in general.

But for now, I whole heartedly recommend it, and encourage everyone to check it out! It’s got all the good things and there’s a ton to speculate on. Come freak out and theorize over that post credits scene where [redacted] with me.

I didn't like Scott Pilgrim Takes Off all that much. I feel like elucidating on why, a little bit. so. Anyway.

First, letterboxd review I wrote within a few hours of finishing the show (read this first please):

So, I read all of the comic (finally) prior to watching Takes Off. Having seen the movie several times before, I found the comic interesting in how it develops its characters further over a longer timeframe and ties up a few loose ends that the movie sort of left open in weird ways that don't make sense. Ramona has more agency, Knives shows more maturity, Scott and Ramona are more explicitly on equal footing and make for better foils for each other in the comic than in the movie. Scott regrets his life choices and runs away for a while. Ramona regrets her life choices and also runs away. They both come back and beat up Gideon together with, y'know, mutual agreement that they both kinda equally suck and deserve each other and are going to both try to get better for themselves and one another and it's fine

It's not like, groundbreaking feminist storytelling, but it sure is a lot MORE gender equal than the movie which just goes like. Ramona is mind controlled! Scott must save her! Scott beats up Gideon sorta unilaterally (with a little bit of help) and then gets Ramona because he does! It's okay. It's fine. I mean, both the movie and the comic are fine. The movie is a hyperinventive visual feast and a stellar adaptation as far as faithfully replicating its source material in the target medium. I love it. Anyway.

Both the comic and the movie are fairly complete stories which really don't need more elaborating on. They're done. They exist. People either like them, or hate them, and have been discoursing on them for years. People discuss how bad of a person Scott is or isn't, or how transgender of a reading you can apply or not apply to Scott.

(I mean, you can! You're allowed to!)

It's all well-worn. And stuff. I don't know that Scott Pilgrim is a trans girl. I mean, it's plausible fanfiction. You can do it if you like. I wish that Takes Off had played with that idea, instead of what it did do, or, in addition to what it did do? And what it did do is just. Weh?

Weh.

Okay where do I start. Um.

spoilers for Takes Off below this point

Takes Off starts by taking Scott out of the picture. He is assumedly presumably made dead. Coined. Whoo.

Okay so obviously Scott isn't actually dead, he comes back later, but him being presumed dead for a bit does open the door to the rest of the cast to get some attention. Which you'd think would be good. Alright. So, we have Matthew Patel, still here. He's an incel, it turns out. Beats Gideon in a fight being like "man I got the bigger dick here." Wins totally! Okay! The league of evil exes is all either like "wow good going Matt" or "man screw this shit" and leaves. That's amusing for a minute.

Roxy shows up for an episode, fights Ramona, and is like "YOU LEFT ME RAMMY! I HATE YOU!" And we get some delicious flashbackiness to their relationship, and they kinda reconcile. Then Roxy kisses Kim, and is like "nah I don't care Kim" and dips. Yay.

The fight between Ramona and Roxy is well animated and fun to watch. I enjoyed it. It's alright.

What else... Um, Gideon has a backstory! Gideon isn't even his real name! And he's become the mega incel that he becomes because he got rejected by some girl in high school and this turned into his supervillain origin story. Okay

Lucas Lee does skateboarding and skateboards some paparazzosi to coindeath! Go him! That is genuinely a fun sequence and I enjoyed it, I guess

Wallace Wells seduces Todd Ingram and they have a lot of hot gay vegan sex! He and Envy Adams sorta fight about it! How wacky! Okay

The Katayanagi Twins get some speaking lines in this show! Their robot (which appeared in the comic but not the movie if I remember right) is around. Um.

Julie! Julie is an old school friend of Gideon. She lets him stay at her house. Gideon/Gordon and Lucas Lee do some bro shit. Cool man

All of this is like, fine, and fun, and stuff. I'm fine with it. I liked it. I enjoyed it. Oh and I guess there's a meta subplot about the Scott Pilgrim movie becoming the Scott Pilgrim movie but failing to become the Scott Pilgrim movie because the actors keep having too many video game fights on the movie set

Okay so this is all stuff that Ramona finds out or sorta bumbles into while looking for Scott, who she's surmised has disappeared and is not actually dead. Of course, Scott is not actually dead. He's just been kidnapped and displaced in time by an older version of himself, who is having a midlife crisis because his relationship with Ramona is going badly and he wishes that it had never happened, so he kidnaps young Scott to make it so that it never happened. This does not really work. Also future Ramona does some of her own intervening in the past to counter the plot of future Scott. She has Delorean rollerblades that time travel at 88 miles per hour *rolls eyes*

Anyway, then older older Scott has a fight with younger younger Scott, future Ramona intervenes and merges with younger Ramona to become a super form Ramona and they're just like "my beloved Scott, please, just go back to the future and sort out our marriage, like a responsible adult," he is teleported back to the future, all the exes are not coinexploded, and we get a final scene implying that Julie and Gideon/Gordon are planning something which will lead into a second season, and I don't know why

Why is any of this?

I could analyze it. I could try to tell you why any of this is. But like. I really can't. I don't know.

None of this really advances or develops the characters in any way that wasn't already adequately explored in the existing material. Like, Roxy's hangup over Ramona is fleshed out a bit more, sure, and that's the part of the show I really liked, but... is there anything to that? Does it add anything to Roxy's character that we didn't already know? Not really. We could already pretty easily infer from the comics that Ramona left Roxy, just like she left all her exes, and that Roxy is mad about it. Is it nice that they talk about it? I guess. Sure. It's nice to have a version of that conversation without Scott being the third wheel. But does it meaningfully change her character?

...No

And this is the same for all the characters. Our understanding of Matthew Patel and Gideon Graves is not particularly deepened by their incel dickmeasuring fight, or Gideon's origin story about getting rejected in high school. Our understanding of Lucas Lee is not especially enhanced by the newly revealed detail that he's a headache for his agent because of his reckless wild free devil may care skater dude attitude causing PR risks. Our understanding of Wallace Wells is not amazingly additioned by seeing him seduce Todd Ingram and piss off Envy Adams. Our understanding of Knives doesn't change when she learns how to play music and gets along with Kim and Stephen... And such and so forth.

And our understanding of Scott does not meaningfully change, either. There's really no radically new character interpretation to be drawn from "Scott divorces Ramona and then tries to undo his past". That's just kind of a thing you'd figure he'd do. And of course Ramona would try to set him straight! And look for him! And. Yeah

So yeah, Takes Off feels like, almost, the definition of that phrase that Dan Olson used in that one video

"No meaning, only lore."

I cannot fathom why this show exists other than that Netflix wanted a Scott Pilgrim show, and Bryan Lee O'Malley decided to pitch one because he's sure as hell not got any other big hit comics being cross-media franchises right now, and the plot that ended up being there feels like his end of the entire writing process was spent wracking his brain, fighting for his life to come up with a reason, any reason, to write more of fucking Scott Pilgrim

And the best he could come up with was, I guess, Scott has a midlife crisis, and also more superfluous character detail, and the fanservice angle of getting to see Ramona fight Roxy, or Gideon fight Matthew, or Lucas Lee skateboard more

I had a lot of fun seeing all that but I don't know why I watched it. I don't know who wanted this. And I definitely don't know who wants a second season of this. Who would want more of this? The season we do have was already grasping for straws to do more with this setting and these characters as it was. What would they even do?

Anyway. If I was gonna rewrite this and write this smarter. I'd probably tell y'all about the moment when Young Neil is trying to write a screenplay, and some mysterious figure (later revealed to be future Ramona) shows up in his room and types up the screenplay for the Scott Pilgrim movie for him. And then he wakes up, the screenplay is on his desk, and he's like "WHOA I don't remember writing this! I totally wrote this!"

And I'd say, if I were trying to be smart and write some smart video essay analogy in a better more polished review, that Takes Off feels like Bryan Lee O'Malley wished that the script for the show would similarly emerge fully formed from nowhere from the future for him.

Or something.

*Author’s note*

Okay this was a long time in the waiting but I finally got the inspiration to do this request that was in my inbox for awhile. @littlesister20001 hope you enjoy this and like it.

Now FAIR WARNING!! The reader is autistic and there are MANY levels of autism and the way I went with was putting the reader somewhere on the the high-function autism scale. Also EVERYONE with high-functioning autism act and behave differently, and I know NO ONE on the high function (my younger cousin is on the low spectrum autism) and this is what I chose after doing some research on high-spectrum autism so if there is ANY HATE directed at me, you WILL be blocked or I will just take this fic down.

I was currently reading my latest book on constellations and galaxies that Rocket had given to me on their last visit here to earth. Apparently according to him, “Terran scientists don’t know jack-shit about what’s really out there”. So while he and the rest of the Guardians were out refurbishing a place called Knowhere, he managed to find this book and he thought he’d give it to me. And I’ve been glued to it ever since.

“So this is where you’ve been.” I perked up and immediately ran up and hugged Bucky as he caught me.

“I thought you’d be gone on that mission with Sam and Joaquin for another two days?”

“We finished early.”

“You didn’t jump out of another plane with no parachute again did you?”

“I can’t believe Sam showed you that video. I told him to delete it from his stupid bird robot.”

“First of all Redwing ain’t stupid. Second of all, you were the one who made the decision to jump freestyle out the plane. Not my fault you kept smashing into trees.” Sam said as he came up and grabbed himself a cup of OJ. “And to answer your question little miss, yes he did. I’ll send you the video later.” I laughed.

“Don’t you have someone else you can ignore, Captain?” Bucky said turning to Sam annoyed.

“No. I bother you from 12-6pm. That’s my schedule.” Sam shrugged as he took a sip of his drink before leaving.

“I swear to god he’s annoying.”

“Stop it, you love him.”

“We work together, we’re not friends just co-workers.”

“Whatever helps you sleep at night Sergeant.” I said sitting back down.

“Okay so what have you been doing since we left? Sitting here reading your books Belle?” I playfully shoved him as he took a seat next to me.

“You know I hate being called her right.”

“You’re right sorry. I meant Hermione Granger.”

“That’s even worse! Stop!”

“Okay, okay, okay. But seriously was all you did was sit here and read.”

“Of course not silly! The Guardians came for a visit yesterday and I hung out with them. Got to see all their new tech they got for us to use against any oncoming future attacks from the Big Three.”

“I also can’t believe Sam taught you that as well.”

“Buck, come on. I’m not stupid, I’ve followed every fight you guys have done going back to yours and Steve Roger’s back in world war 2.”

“Okay stalker.”

“I’m not a stalker!”

“Whatever helps you sleep at night techie.” He said throwing my words back at me. I shoved him harder (which really didn’t do anything except make him laugh).

“Anyways, that’s when Rocket also gave me this book.” I showed to him titled: “THE FAR REACHES OF YOUR GALAXY; The truth about the stars”.

“Tell me that rodent didn’t steal anything of mine while he was here.”

“You still harboring a grudge against him for taking your arm. You know it was Nebula that had done that and be thankful she took it when you were asleep.”

“That’s still not okay. Do you know how pissed Shuri was at me for letting Wakandan tech go into outer space?”

“I will give you that but at least you told her who it was that got it.”

“But also she’s not quite sure how a raccoon can understand Wakandan technology and building.”

“He’s not a raccoon.”

“Really cause I’ve seen a lot of them and he definitely looked like a raccoon to me.” I rolled my eyes. “So what is in that book anyway?”

“The truth about the stars. It says it right on the title Bucky is your sight gone too?”

“More old man jokes, one thing I enjoyed being away from.”

“Just speaking truth Buck.” He nodded sarcastically before suddenly grabbing me in a headlock before giving my a hard noogie. “GAH!! ENOUGH STOP IT!!”

“Take back the old man comment and I will squirt.”

“Okay you’re not old now stop!” he released me as I tried to fix my hair. “Do you know how hard it took me to do my hair today? I accidentally forgot to wash my hair after using the pool and my hair was a bitch to brush this morning.”

“I’m sorry. How bout I make it up to you by letting me take you out to the science con that’s coming this weekend?”

“You mean the one where physicist Dr. Bernadette Rostenkowski and neuroscientist Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler are speaking at?”

“Yeah. You and me.”

“Oh Bucky thank you! Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you!” I said hugging him so tight. He hugged me back and said,

“You should really thank Shuri. She’s actually gonna be a panelist Friday and Saturday so she’s the one who scored us the tickets.”

“Oh this is gonna be so much fun. I’m already bursting at the seams!”

“Okay easy there kiddo. Don’t want you blowing a circuit just yet.”

“Sorry I just—I’m so excited. Plus it—it’s the first time since you left that we really got to hang out together. I missed you Bucky.” He softly smiled and said as he gently ruffled my hair once more.

“I missed you too squirt.” He brought me into a one armed hug before giving me a soft kiss to my forehead as I cuddled close into his chest. “So what interesting facts do the people in outer space say about our galaxy?”

“Well I’m glad you asked, first off did you know that…..” I then opened to the first page I had bookmarked and shared with him several facts that I never knew or what we had been wrong about.

That’s the thing I love best about Bucky. Whenever I tend to go off on my factual ramblings, or want to overshare certain events or facts, he listens. He doesn’t interrupt, complain, or pretend to listen (I’ve always hated when people do that to me). He gets me, and that’s why I’ve always loved Bucky more than any member on the team.

The next morning, I had gotten packed up and ready to go to the convention. Well we were actually gonna take a flight to LA and take a day just to sight-see before the con would start Friday. After packing my last suitcase I pulled up the website on my phone and found the schedule they had posted.

“Knock, knock, you ready to head to the airport?” I heard Bucky’s voice say.

“You betcha. And I’ve already got our schedule all planned out. On Friday there’s a seminar on Nano-technology and then Shuri’s panel about how Vibranium can make life easier. And after we get some lunch you can see Dr. Farrah Fowler talk about women and science along with Dr. Rostenkowski.”

“Sounds like a full day for Friday. What about the rest of the con?”

“I can do that when we get on the plane. No better thing to do on an airplane than get some work done.”

“I would agree to that. C’mon I’ve got our ride waiting for us downstairs.” I grabbed my bags and we proceeded down the elevator when running up to us was Joaquin Torres.

“Barnes! Sergeant Barnes! Thank god I caught you. We need you for this mission now!” he said urgently.

“What mission? We completed our mission early.” Bucky said.

“We thought so too sir but we’ve picked up another signal from a few remaining members of the Flagsmashers. We really need your help on this.” Bucky looked between me and him and he told Joaquin.

“Torres, I’m sorry but you gotta get someone else to—”

“I know we would ask anyone else to back us up but anyone who could is unavailable to do so. Please Sergeant Barnes, we need your help.”

“NO!!” I cried out. The two men looked at me.

This wasn’t supposed to happen! He already had to be away from me for six weeks trying to capture the remaining members of the Flagsmashers and that was the longest he had been away from me. His next mission wouldn’t be until at least a couple months if not 3 weeks!

He shouldn’t go he doesn’t need to go! He promised me we’d go to the science con together and damnit I want us to go together!

“Find someone else to go because he’s not going with you!” I snapped.

“(Y/n), I know this is difficult for you to understand, but—”

“DON’T TALK DOWN TO ME!! I UNDERSTAND COMPLETELY! I know Bucky’s mission schedule because Sam has told me about it! And if there were a surprise he’d warn me ahead of time about it! Bucky already made plans with me so find someone else to go on the mission because you’re taking away MY ONLY FRIEND AWAY FROM ME AGAIN!!!” I slammed my bags down on the floor and took off running.

I ended up back in my room and slammed the door shut with a loud bang. My breathing became constricted as I collapsed to my bed and wept into my pillows as I tightly gripped onto my sheets. A knock was soon heard at my door.

‘(Y/n)? Can we talk?’

“Go away.” I grumbled before getting under my covers.

‘Not gonna happen squirt. You know how stubborn we old folks can be.’ He tried to joke which honestly did get me to quirk up a smile. ‘C’mon kid, don’t make me bust down the door or break it off its hinges again like last time.’ I lay there for a moment before reaching for my phone and opened the door for him.

I felt the bed dip near my legs and he asked me.

“You doing okay breathing wise?”

“My chest still slightly hurts but at least I’m not hyperventilating like my last meltdown.”

“Yeah that was pretty scary.” He admitted. “Why don’t you come out from under those covers, you know there ain’t enough oxygen when you’re under something.”

“It’s actually carbon dioxide we breathe in, and oxygen comes out.” I said getting my head out from the blanket.

“Right of course. Silly me.” I softly scoffed before fiddling with the ends of my hair. “You know Joaquin is still trying to learn the ropes.”

“I know. But he shouldn’t have said I don’t understand things. I hate it when people use my disability against me.”

“He wasn’t trying to. No one does, and even if we do you end up proving them wrong with a savage comeback.”

“Still he shouldn’t have said it.” I grumbled.

“I’ll get him to apologize to you later.”

“You mean when you come back from your mission?” I said laying back down and turned away from him. I heard his sigh as he said.

“That’s actually what I came up here to talk to you about.”

“Bucky……” I now sighed deeply. “I know I still have to get used to sudden changes in life. Because that’s what life is, but I struggle with understanding that. Why do we have to have sudden changes to our lives without thoroughly planning them out? Or when you make plans with someone why does something have to interfere with them or they cancel last minute?”

“Again kid, that’s life. Doesn’t mean we have to like it, all we can do is just—roll with the punches. Or how you kids say go with the flow.” He said the last part like he was trying to sound cool.

“So you are going to go on the mission?”

“Going off against super soldiers, they’re gonna need a super soldier on their side.” I let out a soft whine.

“I just got you back after a whole month and now I’m losing you again. Ever since the Flagsmashers have risen back up, I worry about you Bucky. Sure you’re a super soldier but they are 20 super soldiers. 20 easily overpowers one.”

“You really count me out just like that?”

“Now you’re making me sound like a negative doubter.” I said sitting back up and glared at him.

“I know you’re not a negative doubter, you’re just stating facts and I know. 20 to 1 is not a fair fight but you’re forgetting one thing squirt. I’m Bucky Barnes, I can handle myself. You don’t need to worry about me, okay?”

“It’s hard not to. What I said back there was true. You’re my old friend here.”

“What about Sam?”

“Sam’s cool but there are things that he sometimes doesn’t get when it comes to my autism. That or with him being the new Captain America, he’s too busy to hang out. And don’t tell him this but—you are honestly cooler than him.”

“FINALLY! Thank you. Someone who finally admits it.”

“I think I wanna take it back now.” I teased.

“No, no, no you can’t retract it back now. It’s too late.” I shoved him playfully and he nudged me back. “How about this, when I come back, we take a whole month off of work, just you and me. Road trip even.”

“Don’t make a promise you can’t keep Buck.”

“Well good thing this isn’t a promise.” I looked at him confused. “It’s an oath. And everyone knows that while a promise can be broken, an oath never can. What do you say squirt, you and me out on the open road. Deal?” he extended his hand out to me. After a minute between looking at him and his hand, I took it and we shook on it.

“I’ll hold you to that oath.”

Hello hello! Thank you for your request! I have added both P03 and Leshy for this request as I don’t see why not adding in forest peepaw. Also yes sassy gay stoat robot is the main priority <3

Anyways, I hope you enjoy and have a good rest of your day/night!

Transgender Thyme-What would they do if their partner was seriously injured?

P03

This bot is beyond stressed when he finds out that you’ve been seriously hurt.

P03 is constantly checking on you, making sure you’re in stable condition, that you’re getting everything you need to heal and get better, ect. If he’s busy, it’ll ask one of its workers to make sure you’re doing okay and to notify it if anything goes wrong.

If you’re conscious enough to respond and talk to him, P03 would worriedly scold you about how stupid it was for you to be in that dangerous situation at all. However, if you told him it was entirely an accident or you hadn’t known it was going to happen, it’ll just sigh and tell you to be more careful.

Although, if permanent damage has been done, P03 is distraught. Not at you, certainly not at you. He’s upset at itself because it couldn’t prevent it or at least do something to make your situation better. This doesn’t stop the bot from finding ways to care for you and make sure that routines are adjusted to help make tasks easier for you to do.

While you’re recovering though, P03 spends time with you. Playing Inscryption with you, talking, or just enjoying each other’s company. The bot wants to keep as close as possible to you to not only make sure you're okay, but to also give you some company so you’re not lonely. (He’d never admit this to anyone, ever, but the intention is certainly there)

Once you’ve recovered, P03 is sure to keep a close eye on you. A good chunk of his usual work time is spent watching you in the security feed to make sure you don’t hurt yourself, and even then the factory workers were already told to be wary of your mishandlings.

It all does seem and probably is overbearing, but P03 just wants to make sure you’re okay, and to be certain you won’t be hurt again. He loves you too much for you to be damaged so badly.

Leshy

Worry, panic, nervous, more worry, panic again-

Leshy is panicking hearing about your injured state, and is rushing to make sure that you’ll be alright. Like P03, he is almost always checking in on you to make sure your condition isn’t getting progressively worse. Unlike P03 though, he will not leave your side until he knows 100% you will be fine unsupervised for five minutes. Leshy cares about you and loves too much to let you suffer alone and you already were hurt when he wasn’t paying attention, so that paranoia is going to skyrocket.

If you were left with some permanent damage, Leshy is heartbroken. His guilt would be swallowing him up whole as he laments not being able to prevent such a thing happening to you, someone so dear to him. Although, he never stops thinking about your care, as that is his priority all the time anyway. Anything you may need help with as you go about your day to day tasks, Leshy is right at your side more than willing to help you with anything.

Likewise, Leshy will spend practically all of his time focusing on you, keeping close to you and providing company. If you’re able to, he’d play Inscryption with you and try to distract you with his storytelling. The only time he isn’t at your side is if he’s getting you something to eat or drink. That’s it. Other than that, Leshy is there by you even as you sleep. You two are just falling asleep together. Although, if you request to be alone, Leshy will begrudgingly do so.

When you’ve fully recovered, Leshy is still not leaving your side. He’s staying close to you or at least making sure you're within his line of sight to make sure you won’t get hurt. If he really needs to leave you alone, he’ll either make you stay within the confines of the cabin or have one of his lackeys keep an eye on you (probably the Angler or Trapper/Trader).

Leshy’s protective nature is amplified whenever you’re injured, and he only wants to make sure that you're well-taken care of.

Bigender Barberry-How would they like to be comforted after a bad or stressful day?

P03

P03 would just like some company and to be able to vent about his stress. When things go wack in the factory and it’s mostly up to P03 to fix it, it’s rather frustrating and stressful for the bot. So to have someone to comfort him, and let it rant about its frustration, it’s more than a relief.

The bot would like to just lay his head in your lap and vent about everything that’s bothering it. Though, P03 wouldn’t be opposed to having some affection touches and reassuring words sprinkled in as he lays there in your lap.

If you were to help him afterwards, it would be highly grateful. However, P03 wouldn’t show it directly. Instead, he shows his gratitude via little gifts mysteriously left near places you visit often throughout the day as well as a hold back on snarky quips and more affectionate comments. Well, as much as P03 can get to being affectionate but it’s sweet all the same.

He’s just glad to have someone by its side even during its more stressful days.

Leshy

Leshy would like to sit in a comfortable silence with someone dear to him. He may say a few things about how he feels and about what made him so stressed throughout the day. If you were to try and distract him with cards or stories, Leshy would certainly appreciate it.

Sometimes Leshy takes nature walks to clear his head and relax, with some extra company it makes it more special to him. He doesn’t really pick a particular direction, just wherever he impulsively goes is what makes the trail. If you wanted to visit a certain spot with him, he also wouldn’t mind doing so. It’s only all the more to distract him from his stress. It doesn’t matter if you both have seen the exact place a hundred times, he just doesn’t want to worry about anything and will take anything to get away from that.

Leshy is another one that would like some physical or verbal affection in his time of need. Whatever affection forms from you, someone he trusts and cares for deeply, Leshy will take without hesitation. He loves being affectionate with people he cares about, especially you.

Welcome to my blog, which is now obviously becoming much more clearly Bocchi-themed than I had originally intended it to be, as Bocchi the Rock continues to influence my personality and my interests to an insane degree

(I never got a chance to be obsessed over a fandom when I was going through my first puberty so now that I've got a second chance you're ALL gonna hear about it!!!)

I’m writing a book that has robot and cyborg characters and they’re sorta a allegory (is that the right word?) for queer people. The story follows two robots, a cyborg, and a human as they manage accepting themselves and each other, dealing with trauma, and fighting for freedom against a system that hates robots.

Originally this book was just for me, but now I’m part way through and I kind of want to publish it, so I have some questions about how I’m handling the queer symbolism.

Firstly, in this story, all children are made in labs. In this world, this is how it’s always been done/this is just straight up how kids are made. Also, the labs are kinda a third party to society at large. But anyway, the point is robot, cyborg, and human children are all made the way they are on purpose (#born that way). But some humans argue robots are wholly unnatural and that cyborgs should ignore those parts of themselves and try to hide them. Does this symbolism come across? Can you tell just from that description that robots are stand ins for people who’s entire identity is queer (like say their trans aro and pan or something), cyborgs are like people who have only one or two queer identities and humans are cis het allo and all that.

Also. Should I let human characters also be gay and trans? Since it’s only meant to a representation for how queer people are treated and not supposed to be a one to one thing. I’ll leaning towards yes, let them be gay and trans and ace and aro and all that, but I’m just not sure.

Should I just not publish this at all? I feel like it’ll come across as problematic. Originally, it was a kind of like a way to vent and express my own experiences, but then I thought that others could enjoy it. But there’s a good chance that it’ll won’t come across right or be weird/too confusing.

Just from reading this my view of it isn't that it's a 100% allegory for queer identities as a whole. To me it reads more like an allegory for gender with focus on nonbinary, trans, and other identities which fall under those umbrellas. That's not to say that to others the general queer allegory won't come across because I definitely think it will as what you've explained here certainly is able to be read that way. I'd leave this open to followers for their opinion on how they view this and I'd say it can't hurt for you to seek out other perspectives on that aspect in particular

I think that it wouldn't really harm anything to have characters be gay, trans, or other queer identities. Your focus seems to be more on the discrimination of robots so I'm not certain if there's a need to directly state anyone's gender or sexuality but hinting at it could work. As well as maybe the identities being considered non-traditional/non-society norm, might allow you to explore your allegory more if human characters are possible sympathizers or stand up on behalf/in support of the robots and cyborgs

As for publishing this, that's entirely up to you. I can't say whether you're work might get misinterpreted, all works run that risk. Truly as long as you do a read-through or a few, of your work which you will have to do for editing purposes, you'll catch things, be able to expand on things that might make the allegory clear.

All in all, it is your world, so you have the freedom to play around with it

Hello hello! Welcome to my blog. I plan to post about whatever it is that interests me most at any given moment, as well as the usual tumblr brand of queer awareness and related topics. Because am big gay, big trans, and big Using Whatever Platform I Have Available To Me To Do That Kind Of Thing. But it is mostly fandom stuff here so yeah.

As of 2024, I am trying my best to work on some original writings and settings for the stories I’m hoping to tell. My current settings are Broken Moon, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi world inhabited by mechanical robots and bio-engineered creatures in the ruins of humanity. This setting involves themes of horror, violence, existentialism, religion, and gore, both organic and mechanical. There is also Estea, a much more lighthearted, but still at times a bit angsty setting for my fursona anthro characters. It mainly focuses on my OC, Elnos Lavenwine.

Both of these settings will have their own tags, but feel free to search my blog for specific character names if that helps you find stuff about it easier!

12. How many WIPs do you have in your docs for next year?

I've had to be very careful about WIPs due to working on How It Will Be! So in terms of WIPs that actually have things written, there's HIWB (of course) and a Sprace meet cute one-shot inspired by this swing dance video I've seen floating around tumblr. I have documents with some planning notes, but I haven't actually started writing those, and some of them are Bachelorette AU tie-ins that I can't really write until HIWB is done. I still need to write my exchange and mini bang fics, but those don't have documents yet (😬)

17. Your favorite character to write this year?

Race! I've given him a lot of roles--a depressed, somewhat emotionally constipated professor (in a fic I ultimately hid on AO3 (I can dig up the tutorial on how to do that for anyone who wants it)); Jack's scheming best friend/roommate (Take the elephant by the hand); an offputting not-quite-human (Still Through the Leaves); and of course the over-the-top Bachelorette host. It's been cool to figure out how his personality traits manifest in each AU, and I am very excited to make him go through some stuff in the next couple chapters of HIWB.

Honorable mention to Crutchie, because while he cares a lot about his friends he is also a menace, which is always entertaining. In the Much Ado-niverse, he has a very specific way of talking (gratuitous fancy words, mostly) that I really enjoy writing, but given his different background/career choices/interests in HIWB I didn't think it made sense to carry that over.

18. The character that gave you the most trouble writing this year?

I don't know if it's trouble necessarily, but out of all the non-POV characters in HIWB, Albert has consistently had the most going on behind the scenes, as it were. But because he isn't a POV character, everything we know about him comes exclusively from dialogue and how the POV characters interpret his actions. Figuring out what he was thinking/feeling in the more emotionally charged scenes while also figuring out how much of that he'd want to reveal (and what characters figure out) was definitely an interesting process. I rewrote the scene in the Reykjavik chapter where he and Charlie first kissed at least 3-4 times because I was so worried about getting it right.

29. Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?

There are a lot of one-liners that I really like, and there's a scene early-ish in HIWB where Jack is being a bi disaster about Davey and Katherine that I think is fun, but my favorite has to be the opening of chapter 8 in the now-hidden fic I've referenced. Race is a trans guy in that AU, and he spends some time before he realizes that he's trans questioning his sexuality, and this scene is the aftermath of some of that pre-transition questioning going slightly sideways. Anyway, the scene is under the cut (Race is referred to with she/her due to the scene taking place pre-realization):

After Race broke up with her girlfriend, she went back to the half of a duplex that she shared with a couple perpetually absent medical students and shut herself in her room.

Dating Amelia had been–Not an experiment, Race reminded herself. You really thought you liked her. Amelia was also a PhD student, luckily in the robotics engineering department and therefore far enough removed from Race’s statistics program for them to have space post-breakup. They were friends, and Race had enjoyed spending time with her–except for the small problem that she’d eventually realized she wasn’t actually attracted to her.

Jack and David coming out senior year had turned out to be a catalyst for the rest of their friend group. Sarah had announced she was a lesbian part way through college, and Albert and Finch had both come out as gay and ended up in an on-and-off friends with benefits situation that Race tried to avoid knowing the details of. Charlie had said a couple years ago that he was still figuring things out, but between his friends, job, and disability rights activism, he thought he was probably too busy to date anyway. Even Spot and Katherine, who’d spent most of their lives struggling to fit the pictures their parents had of them, had come out to the general public via Facebook post on the same day in the fall. Which left Race, theoretically the token straight of the group, who was read as a lesbian even more now that she’d cut her hair short, donated the last dress and underwire bra in her closet, and wore as much L.L. Bean clothing as she could get her hands on.

She had thought that maybe she’d missed something along the way, that she really was secretly bisexual and had been in denial the whole time. She was sure she was interested in men–she’d had a few boyfriends in undergrad, and then there was the yearslong, semi-latent crush on–

No.

Race swallowed, staring vacantly at the collage of pictures she’d hung on her wall. There was her with Jack and Medda at her college graduation, her and Albert and David at a surprisingly quiet beach on the Cape, a picture of her undergrad dance troupe performing, and right in the middle, a picture of her sitting on a couch–she didn’t even remember where it was taken at this point–next to–

There was a chance that she just hadn’t found the right person in Amelia. But Race didn’t want to date another girl, knowing that she probably would just end up discovering she wasn’t attracted to them in the first place.

She and this theoretical girl deserved better.

STORYTIME: why my parents can never go through my notes app

so back in my senior year of high school, we had to choose our senior quotes for the yearbook. me, being a little comedic shit, knew exactly what my quote was going to be since freshman year: "I got a haircut. Nobody noticed." (this is funny because I'm Muslim and I wear the hijab AKA NOBODY CAN SEE MY HAIR DO YOU GET IT-). she's an oldie she's a goodie she is classic and timeless.

anyways. two of my friends expressed how they both want to put funny & original things for their quotes, but had no clue what. so being the little comedic shit i am, began to write down any time someone says something that out of context is funny as shit. most were quotes from my friends themselves, some were from yours truly, and a couple were from other friends.

it's been a year since we graduated, so the need for the quotes is long gone, but i like to go back in my notes and read through them and laugh (and attempt/fail to remember the context behind the quotes).

BASICALLYY the transformers r alien robots from the planet cybertron!! they are fighting a civil war and eventually all the fighting wrecks the planet n the battle gets moved 2 earth!! there r two sides, the good guys called the autobots (led by a guy called optimus prime he is popular n beloved in the franchise n fandom) and the evil bad guys r called the Decepticons!! they are led by their evil leader Megatron!! OP and megs are sworn enemies n fight sm, the wars been going on for like over 4 million years (these guys live a LONGGG time) on earth, the autobots r nicer and treat the humans better than the cons anyways (tho no bot/con is rlly pure their like all war criminals LMAOOO) u would not BELIEVEE their mfing drama!! the pettyness of these mech mfs fr

ANYWAYZZ another rlly cool thing abt the series is the many canon queer bots!!! :D their mostly in the idw comics tho, such as the comic series 'more than meets than the eye' and lost light' which features multiple main characters who r gay and have a bunch of mlm relationships, as well as lost light having some t4t lesbians who r prominent EEE it so cool to see!! another example of transgenderformers is in the newest show 'transformers earthspark' which features one of the main characters who is nonbinary!! their sooo cool :]!!

now AHEM some recommendations r below for tf shows that I rlly like (NO PRESSURE TO WATCH/CONSUME ANY OF THESE THO!! i just rlly always like linking tf stuff it makes me happy :3 i wont mind at all if these just sit here foreva i just am like YAYY when i have to find linkies it is very fun!!)
