You know what’s great about Dr. Facilier?
He’s the perfect villain opposite both Tiana and Naveen.
He’s not exactly like Jafar or Ursula, who know they’re evil and delight in it as like, a lifestyle. He’s more like Scar. He’s introduced getting money on the street through cons and feeling satisfied…until Big Daddy LeBouf drives by with all his money and makes him feel insignificant.
Tumblr media
You get the idea that something in life made him this way—there was a beginning to his villainy. You don’t get that sense from like, Clayton or Gaston.
So he’s a relatable character with flaws, to an extent.
But those flaws specifically play off of Tiana and Naveen’s characterizations.
Tiana has no real respect from her peers—she is in a position to be jealous of Lottie the same way Facilier is jealous of the Cotton King. But where Tiana simply works hard and refuses to let others make her bitter, Facilier has clearly taken shortcuts. Or…”the easy way.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then there’s Naveen.
Naveen has no thought beyond the present; he thinks they’re “on this earth to have some fun,” and frequently jumps without looking at the consequences. Leaps without looking! Doesn’t stop to find out if the girl he’s kissing is a real princess even though he knew his original invitation was to a costume party, forgets that he’s supposed to be getting married and plans on continuing his playboy lifestyle, wanders into a shadow-man’s shop. But eventually he learns to open his eyes to what’s important, and what will last, in Tiana. And he takes that seriously; if he marries her instead of Charlotte, he has to get three jobs.
Tumblr media
Facilier, on the other hand? He not only does the opposite of Tiana and has taken shortcuts to get where he is—but he also suffers from Naveen’s flaw; he keeps making what are basically get-rich-quick schemes with his “friends on the other side.” When we meet him, he’s stressed and certainly on edge about failing—but that doesn’t stop him from asking for more and more debt from the demons, and he basically goes to his grave still making promises he can’t keep…like Naveen’s promise he couldn’t keep to pay Tiana for kissing him.
Tumblr media
He’s got Tiana’s focus and Naveen’s charisma. He’s got Tiana’s lofty goals and Naveen’s dependence on others to do his dirty work.
He’s exactly like Tiana and Naveen put together, aged about twenty years, but with none of their good qualities. Perfect villain for those two main characters.
But he’s also the opposite of Mama Odie.
He entices innocents with what they want while she lights their way by explaining what they need.
He wants total control, while she’s satisfied with simply giving advice and sending people on their way.
He directly transforms his victims, while Mama Odie shows Tiana and Naveen how to work toward their transformation on their own. I mean, you guys noticed that she could have done it for them, right?
Tumblr media
But she doesn’t, because she’s the symbol of that Disney Faith-Based morals: you act on what you know is true instead of taking the easy way to what you want. Facilier does the opposite: he promises to give you the easy way to what you want, and tries to tell you why you should accept his deals—but his reasons are all lies.
Tumblr media
That’s how you write a villain, ladies and gentlemen.

Hi! For the ask game. For your delightful Shadow Queen fic, Breakfast, how do you think Regina's relationship with Facilier developed over time from the point where your fanfiction diverged from canon to the story itself?
Edit: OH, MY FUCKING GOD! I just noticed this was in the queue. I thought I posted it. So sorry for that! I definitely was not ignoring this ask! I've had it written since August 30th. I don't know what happened.
Hi! Glad you like the fic!
To be fair, I don't really have anything deep about him (obviously) deciding to abandon his quest for power in favor of his relationship with Regina. I was kind of riding on the proof in the show that he would put Regina and her feelings over everything else. His interest in the dagger was completely unmotivated and I think they just had it as a built-in setup for killing him off. I imagine the idea was that he was somehow tempting Regina into her old patterns of wanting everything and reverting to villainy (much the same as Rumple manipulating her for the better part of her life, especially since Facilier was practically Rumple 2.0) except that that went nowhere because he was just So. Good! for her. I'm really not sure what happened in the writers' room but anyway, my idea with the story was just "axe the moment of Facilier's death because it was stupid (and more than questionable) and from there it will all happen naturally since the dagger is also gone once Rumple dies". Those were pretty much the only obstacles between them and with them removed, I really think that the two of them would have been a couple.
I wish I could give a more detailed answer but, truly, Facilier had so little screen time and development that we are completely in the dark on his story or his motives. Instead, I just rolled with him being written as total husband material. You know, I am willing to entertain the idea that there might have been some need to process emotions and heal from Robin's death on Regina's side simply for the realization that the universe sent her Facilier after Daniel's death and then returned him to her after Robin's death. Almost as if they were meant to be together (btw, I have a sort of meta/kinda rewrite about the whole soulmate story with Robin that would bridge canon and this nicely but I'll have to work on it some other time) and help her find herself again when she feels like she's lost in grief.

Class of Villainy - Bursting into Song
Inspired by a post by @artzychic27 about certain characters from the Heroverse bursting into song, here’s the same thing happening for some of the villains.
Ms. Mendeleiev: Alright kids, I know you’re probably just gonna ignore it anyway, but this following test is worth 20% of your grade, so be prepared.
(Ismael smiles and pounces up on the desk, causing the fairy godteacher to groan. An eerie green light fills the classroom, as wild hyenas burst through the door.)
Ismael:
BE PREPAARREEDDD!
(He begins laughing maniacally alongside his hyenas.)
Ms. Mendeleiev: Goddamn it...
(Max’s shenanigans cause a blackout in the school. Alya breaks out into a song and dance about it.)
Alya:
Snuff out the light, claim your right, to a world of darkness!
Nino: Babe, do you have to do this every time?
Alya: Don’t throw off my groove, babe!
(Nino and Denise are arguing about who’s the better con-artist.)
Nino: The only reason you can scam anyone is because of magic. All I need is charm and charisma, not some hoodoo shi-
Denise:
Don’t you disrespect me, little fox! Don’t you deregate or deride....
(They smile as their shadows surround the hybrid.)
Denise:
You’re on my turf now, not your turf... and I’ve got friends on the other side.
(Nino gulps as the shadow witch just laughs. They just so happen to be outside of Simon’s room, and the minister-in-training has been watching the whole time, clearly attracted by his partner’s words. He sweats and is blushing heavily.)
Simon: I... um... excuse me for a moment.
(He shuts the door, and somehow, a muffled pipe organ and ominous chanting is heard as Simon screams about his angst and love for Denise.)
Simon:
HELLFIRE! DARK FIRE! THIS FIRE IN MY SKIN!
This burning.... desire. Is turning me to sin!
(Denise just giggles at this, as Nino hurriedly rushes away from the madness.)
So what did you guys think? Alya’s song comes from a deleted scene, and it’s really good. Make sure to ask, reblog, and reply to lemme know. @artzychic27 and @msweebyness

Disney Villain Polycule Posts Part 7 - Picking a Plus One
WOO sneaky shenanigans - Hades maybe you shouldn't push your luck with your relatives, eh? Plot things might happen O.O
Under the cut becuase jesus wept this got away from me.
Hades is being forced invited to a shindig on Olympus, and Zeus has been kind enough to allow him to bring a plus one. With four partners however, that's a tad more difficult than it seems…
Hades is in hell.
No, not just literally for once.
Zeus had decided, in all his air-headed glory, to come down personally and invite him to another olympian shindig. Some over-the-top, mouse approved party which he had to attend.
Now, no skin off his nose getting to spend a day or two in the fresh air and good views of Olympus, even though he tends to get stinkeyed straight back off the cloud again but hey, no more pointless conversation to get snubbed from right?! Sigh.
Mouse approved too, so he couldn’t even get smashed and challenge Apollo to a chariot ‘race’ and nosedive into the earth.
He didn’t have a damn clue what this event was for and stopped listening pretty much the second his dear younger brother got past ‘hello’, but now he had a problem.
He had to bring a plus one.
The problem with being a married god was that people expected you to show up with your spouse. Persephone had made it abundantly clear that if she ever had to set foot in an olympian party with her mother present again she would fill every mattress, seat cushion and sofa on the planet with cacti and make for the sea – a notion he completely understood – and so she was a no go.
Besides, she liked getting to sit on his throne while he was out, and he was more than happy to leave the underworld to her steady eye for a bit. She either tended to redecorate or scare the souls shitless with new monstrous plants, and he loved the maniacal laughter he could sometimes hear echoing down the styx that meant she was having a good time.
So no Persephone. That was his one legitimate call, so turning up with anyone else would invite assumptions of cheating and at the very least a bodyslam from Mother Nature herself, and he was in no mood to be backhanded with the weight of a continent. He could just go alone…
...OR he could have fun with it.
Olympus was barred from mortals entering the realm, but, heh, technically HE was the only god controlling of someone’s state of mortality. They don’t call it an Immortal Soul for nothing!
He turns up to the event – seemingly alone. The air next to him was absolutely laced with glamours, and he could feel the long, thin fingers wrapped around his arm squeeze excitedly.
All throughout the event he forced himself to chat to his siblings and extended family. Sometimes all but launching himself into conversation and letting his natural smoke billow as he moved to cover up the tell tale snags of disturbed cloud around him.
If he really focussed he could tell exactly the moment when Facilier was successful in pickpocketing a god or goddess. A tiny hiss of delight and faint whizzing of a shadow under the cloud layer, handiwork completely silent otherwise. Items disappearing into the glamour with almost supernatural speed thanks to the bokor’s light and nimble fingers.
Off to the right, Jafar had slithered, glamoured and disguised further as a normal sized cobra, listening in on godly gossip and exploring the godly homestead with devious intent. Hades hoped he could make it to Athena’s library in time, and shoved the yearning to see Jafar’s face light up like a child whose birthday had come early deep down. He’d get to see it later, as his partner let the more nerdy, scholarly side of himself take over in a flurry of ink spatters and scattered parchment, attempting to replicate the goddess’s work.
He had, unfortunately, been cornered by Demeter, Zeus and Hera when he felt the tingling scrape of a half transformed claw glide across his upper back.
Maleficent was no doubt absolutely delighted at the fact none of the other gods knew she was there and has let the excitement render her a tad more dragon-esque than normal.
She was also probably laughing at the poorly hidden wish to be left alone written all over his face as his family grilled him for Sephy’s absence. Demeter seemed determined to accuse him of locking her down there – a line of thought that illustrated just how truly little she knew her daughter, since Sephy would have broken out and stabbed him by now if he tried that – Zeus was running for the ‘worlds most patronising pep talk’ award (nothing new, but it did reinforce the wish to stuff his beard into a wood-chipper) and Hera-
-Hera wasn’t saying anything. Which was bringing him out in a cold sweat.
The Goddess of Marriage was just, squinting. At him. He frantically resisted the urge to flick his eyes toward where he knew his beaus were causing mischief around the room.
...Maybe it was a bad idea to flaunt a secret poly relationship in a room containing the goddess of love and the goddess of marriage after all huh??? He didn’t even know how the two did their thing, for titans sake woman - could she see something?!
He frantically babbled out a half assed excuse to leave and all but yanked on the connection to his partners to skedaddle. Cut losses while you’re ahead and all that. He needed a drink and nap and to triple the Underworld wards pronto.
Later, on Olympus.
Hera met Aphrodite on a balcony, overlooking a stunning view of the sunset over Greece. The party was over, and the world was leaning into the contemplative quiet that came with onset of night.
The entrance to the underworld could be seen in the far distance. She let the silence simmer for a while. The elder goddess made no move to interrupt it. Hera sighed.
“I think you’re on to something.” She said.

I saw this post and automatically thought of you. They are 100% correct.
Absolutely! You’re correct. Hey, @the-sage-libriomancer , I saw Wish and you’re still correct. The idea of having a star that is a higher power (Evangeline) and then having a character who demonstrates absolute faith in that higher power (Ray) and winds up teaching that same faith to both self-centered-Naveen and self-reliant Tiana? So very Disney.
Sometimes Disney’s Renaissance-era princesses were the Faithful Characters of their own story—Ariel had faith in Eric and taught that same faith to her father, Jasmine (and Genie) had faith in the Truth and taught that faith to Aladdin and the Sultan, etc. And that’s wonderful. Cinderella and Snow White are the Faithful Characters in their own stories, too, so it’s not like that isn’t a Classic Disney idea.
But Princess and the Frog doesn’t do that. It has the princess be the one who needs to learn to have faith. And the prince! That’s much more like dear old Pinocchio. What Jiminy Cricket and Geopetto are to Pinocchio, Ray is to Louis, Naveen, and Tiana. I mean, how wonderful a tribute to Disney, to have the main character be afraid of relying in something higher, valuing love, and trusting only whatever she can accomplish on her own…
…to have her go from that to being willing to give up what she wanted? To value love, plain old love, over career, personal goals, dreams? To change her dream and admit when she was wrong? And finally, to sacrifice herself in order to do what’s right?
Why, that’s Pinocchio. That’s Mr. Banks from Mary Poppins. That’s Alice from Alice in Wonderland. That’s Disney!
Wish 2023 could never.

There was a Drawfee episode recently where they merged a Disney hero with their villain, and that inspired Dr. Tiana!

OUAT Thoughts Pt.67--Episodes 5-6
I have watched through S7E6; spoilers DNI. Also, spoiler warning for anyone further behind than I am.
—I don’t think they handled Tiana well at all. First of all, her personal code doesn’t hit the mark. Tiana is a dreamer, sure, but she’s also excruciatingly practical. She saved and scrimped her money in jars to get her restaurant, she didn’t bet her rent on it. And making her a sheltered princess-by-birth? Lousy move. Her essence is that she is an ordinary woman who works hard for what she’s got, almost too hard, because she wasn’t born with a silver spoon in her mouth. Community is what’s important to her; dedication and effort, because those are the things she grew up with, not wealth and blindness and entitlement.
—Drisella’s dress at the auction was so pretty. I love cropped, long-sleeved jackets with long solid-colored dresses.
—That ain’t no food truck, that is a hauling-stuff truck. Can’t pull the wool over my eyes.
—I love Regina’s new warrior-Queen aesthetic in the Cinderella world. Which, by the by, needs to get itself a proper name. Calling it the Cinderella world all the time feels pathetic.
—Facilier turning a frog into a person is messed-up. But they were such cute frogs together! All hippity-hopping into the swamp, cute lil froggie voices. (Not the legs. Frogs’ legs are icky.)
—Speaking of Facilier, I love him. I hope he’s not a one-time character.
—He’s quite handsome. And those clothes—which, if you’re going to keep one single outfit from a movie, that’s the one—suit him to a T. And I just adore his voice; any guy who’s playing Facilier has got to have a good voice, and this fellow delivers.
—Those divining bones were an interesting alternative to cards. I mean, I miss the classic, because the cards in the original movie were one of the best visual stuffs, but it’s a cool idea.
—Henry beating up thieves with a plastic Tron lunchbox may be one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a while.
—Regina being gullible about Drisella just proves how good she is now. Only the hero ever falls for such an obvious manipulation.
—Also, Regina’s innate mother-ness is my favorite. Maybe she should consider adopting another kid.
—But that stuff Henry was saying about how ‘he never had a mom, but in his book he gave himself two’? That was terrible. Has Regina not suffered enough?
—When Regina got back her memories, her first idea should’ve been going to Rumple. If anyone else would be awake, she knows it’s him. And she’s gotta be salty about owing him a favor, too.
—Which is also not a good thing. He only collects on his favors when his badness level is high. But, I choose to believe that he’s still a good dude.
—Hook should not have gone into that creepy dark house by himself. That was just stupid. For all he knew, it was a trap. There could’ve been ten people waiting to stab him or something. Where are his brains at?
—That lady in the tower needs some explaining. There is a different between mystery and confusion, and she’s starting to fall into confusion enough that it legitimately agitates my braincells. It’s been six episodes, and I forget how many of them she’s been in, but the fact that I know nothing about her except she for some (unexplained) reason has magic—in a land without magic—is not good. I don’t know why she and Drisella seem to have some history. I don’t know what story she’s supposed to be from. I don’t know what it is Tremaine wants with her. She seems to have some precognition abilities? Or maybe just really good deductive reasoning skills? Leave a couple of elements as unknowns. I don’t have to know her histories with these respective ladies, why she has magic, if she has foresight, who she’s supposed to be, all at once—just give me A FRICKING ONE! —Seriously, this season has a lot of exposition that yields shockingly little knowledge. Now, I’m willing to admit that only having one season of this storyline makes me impatient to know more, because I don’t want it to be left with a lot of loose threads that will never be resolved, but for all their talking they’ve told me very little.
—So, Rumple’s gonna stick with these clothes? I guess it would be kinda weird for everyone else if he started wearing suits, and they’re not practical for a detective. And hey, he’s been alive for centuries, maybe he wants a chance of style. Not that I’m complaining, those clothes are choice.
—He needs to say dearie more. Although that would be the biggest possible red flag for anyone awake….
—Having one of the stepsisters be the badguy is a v good decision. It’s not the expected plot, and they’ve worked it out in a way that I actually didn’t know whether or not to believe Drisella (yk, until now) and I didn’t quite see it coming that she’s the one to cast the Dark Curse.
—SO I had a mega brain-melty moment when somebody, I think it was Lucy but don’t quote me on that, was talking about how cool it was that Henry wrote a fairytale book that had real stories in it. And I was like, “yeah, there are books with real stories. Biographies.” And then I was like, “wouldn’t it be cool if biographies were written the way Henry’s book is?” And then I realized why I like *good* historical fiction so much. It’s based on real people’s lives, and it has most of their real stories. But it’s written in a way that engages and entrances my imagination; it’s written like a fictional story and that somehow makes those people more real to me. And you know what? If I was now or ever planned to be famous, people seeing poetic story elements in my simple existence, years after I died, and spinning those elements into a mythos of their own, would be the highest honor I could ever imagine.
