wait you're so right about the mortal instruments and the series.... tmi:cup::tda:sword::twp:mirror???? and tbh the arthurian connections to the lake are already so tangible that i would hardly even consider that distribution of the mortal instruments as a theory

I really need to write out all my thoughts on it because its definitely one of those things that just expands the more you you think about it like!! there's so much there!! (and yes that's the associations I'm thinking along the lines of)

for example how the cup used to be used as a way to torture & kill downworlders and how that kinda ties back to the circle and their methods. and how that's your history, those are your parents but the cup and your family isn't all bad either; the balancing of those two things. the cup can create and destroy. and identity plays such a big part of it too because the cup makes you into something, it's who you are, what you are. and people look at you and see your mother. they say you're a better man than your father. you were made into something (an experiment, a soldier, a vampire, an eldest curse) but is it you? how can you know? does it all just come down to blood? I can just keep rambling on like this lol you get the idea

Elouan is, for all intents and purposes, the heir of the Lady of the Lake.

However he's also her newest incarnation in the long line of his family. Which may make little sense considering he's, well, not a Faerie queen or anything like that but it's a similar situation to Castoria and Morgan in Faerie Britain. Faeries are born for a specific purpose. If they do not fulfill that purpose upon death, then they are eventually reborn over and over until they do.

And the Lady of the Lake's purpose was to safeguard Excalibur and its chosen wielder.

Viviane failed originally, at least partially.

She could not protect King Arthur and, while Excalibur was returned, that stuck with her. Even as she placed the final seals upon Avalon and the Tower sealing Merlin at the cost of her life, it remained with her. And so with her purpose unfulfilled, with that failure haunting her, the Lady of the Lake was set upon the path of being reborn over and over.

Of course, how does one do that when the Faeries were fading from the world and True Magic was just about gone with the fall of Camelot?

Simple.

There's a human family upon who she granted her blood to empower them, who share the same duty as her. So her soul would be forever reappearing in members of the family at different points in time.

Eventually coming to Elouan.

Though it's important to remember that he has none of her memories, none of her personality. And, until he fully develops, next to none of her powers. All they share are somewhat similar appearances.

...Elouan personally thinks it's all a massive pain in the ass.
