Chapter One — The Ice Earl
The Next Day...
Tsukimiya-sensei is filming a commercial appearance in the studio today.
I decide to go and watch since I took part in the production of the commercial’s background music.
Ringo Tsukimiya: Ohayappu~, Haru-chan.
Haruka Nanami: Ah, Tsukimiya-sensei. Are you on your way to the studio?
Ringo Tsukimiya: Yep, let’s make our way over together! I look forward to today!
I met Sensei on the way and we proceeded to head to the studio together.
Camus-senpai is also participating in today’s commercial shoot along with agency colleagues Tsukimiya-sensei, Cecil Aijima, and Kurosaki-senpai...
Yesterday, I worried over who I would choose to partner up with, but decided to go with Camus-senpai in the end.
The president should have told him about it already, but I still need to introduce myself properly when we meet in-person.
Ringo Tsukimiya: Haru-chan, what’s wrong? You look tense. Are you nervous?
Tsukimiya-sensei smiles at me as we reach the door.
Haruka Nanami: Y-yes, just a little…
I can’t just quit now that I’ve chosen my partner.
I have to create a unit song and then win at the song festival with a solo, all with Camus-senpai, or risk being let go from the company.
I had made up my mind yesterday, but now that it came time to actually meet with him, my feet refuse to move.
I can’t compose a song without knowing the singer well.
This is why I have to start a dialogue with him and build a trusting relationship.
I want him to recognize my resolve and show the benefits I can offer him in this partnership.
I have to do it. But, can I really?
When it comes down to it, it’s a little scary...
Ringo Tsukimiya: It’s alright. You have the ability to overcome this challenge ahead; I believe in you.
But, if you keep looking like that, even the goddess of luck might run away! Look here, smile, smile!
Tsukimiya-sensei lifts the corners of my lips with his forefingers and smiles.
Haruka Nanami: O...okay!
That’s right. I can’t hesitate now. I answer Sensei with the best smile I could muster and I place my hand on the studio door.
Staff A: Move the center flower vase a little farther to the right! Now, adjust the chandelier’s angle!
Staff B: Hey! Where’s another flash reflector—?
The set is alive with activity.
Staff A: Ringo-san, good morning. I look forward to working with you today.
Ringo Tsukimiya: Me too! Let’s take some good shots today~
Sensei, who would be performing the commercial’s leading role, is immediately ushered away to prepare. Not wanting to be a bother, I move to watch the filming from the corner of the studio.
I wonder where Camus-senpai is…
Camus: Good morning, Tsukimiya-san. It is a pleasure to be working with you today.
From a short distance, I see Camus-senpai greet Tsukimiya-sensei with a gentle voice.
Ringo Tsukimiya: Morning, Camus-chan. ...A gentleman on site, as usual. I’m getting chills down my spine.
Camus: It is simply a matter of keeping public and private affairs separate.
Senpai, who I often see on TV and magazines, wears a composed expression on his face as he responds. He was like a completely different person in comparison to our prior encounter after the press conference the other day.
The shoot is about to start; I wonder if it'd be okay to greet him after…
The commercial being filmed is to sell a shampoo boasting three different gorgeous aromas.
The sets and costumes unify to exude a luxurious atmosphere, perfectly reflecting the concept of “A Princess’ Fragrance”.
Grand chandeliers and stained glass. A small water fountain placed in the middle.
Everything down to the smallest detail catches my eye with its stunning beauty.
Tsukimiya-sensei, who has finished makeup and wardrobe, moves to the center of the set and the filming begins.
In his dress, he looks like a fairy princess who has completely stepped out of a storybook.
And three men will be escorting him.
The first person to take his hand in a graceful manner, smiling at him kindly is--
Cecil Aijima: Welcome, Fairy Princess. I will be guiding you for a short while. Well then, let us go.
Cecil-san, the prince of Agna Palace, remarkably shines with exotic charm in his formal attire. There is refinement in every aspect of his demeanor; it feels noble.
Cecil-san is always kind and gentle, but doing this, I remember how he’s actually a prince.
Ranmaru Kurosaki: I’m not gonna pretend to be an escort. Just follow me. I’ll show you… a real dream.
Kurosaki-senpai’s wild atmosphere seems to target the gentle and calm Tsukimiya-sensei and Cecil-san.
With his charm like a shining blade, he commands the attention of those around him. And then…
Ringo Tsukimiya: ...Camus.
Camus: Have you called? Mademoiselle.
Senpai’s role is that of a head butler serving the princess. I figured it out by watching a piece of his acting for only a few seconds after filming started.
Between Cecil-san and Kurosaki-senpai's personalities, his mere presence makes him stand out. Sitting or standing, his elegance is impeccable.
Even so, he perfectly compliments Tsukimiya-sensei’s leading role.
Haruka Nanami: Camus-senpai… is amazing.
He seems to keep everything necessary for filming in mind, from his co-star’s habits, the camera’s location, and even being mindful of the way the light hits.
On top of that, by not allowing any actions to go to waste, it encourages everyone to get the best shot.
Staff A: Ringo-san. It looks a bit cluttered with four people in the center, so there’s one person’s placement I'd like to change…
Staff A: The position is going to be difficult because of how close it is to the fountain, so ideally I'd like to ask Camus to move...
Ringo Tsukimiya: You’re right. It may be difficult for anyone other than Camus-chan to go that way. Would you be able to do it?
Camus-senpai responds to the difficult request with a smile and the apologetic staff do their best in return.
One can tell even from such a small exchange that he is well trusted in this field.
Senpai was in such perfect form that you’d begin to believe that although Tsukimiya-sensei is the main character, without Camus-senpai, the filming just wouldn’t work out.
This is the man who will be my partner. This is the person who I will make music for. I trembled under the weight of my own choice.
Ringo Tsukimiya: Ah!
Camus: Please make sure to be careful. It'd be bad for Madam’s pretty fingertips to get hurt.
Camus-senpai carefully supports Tsukimiya-sensei who trips on the steps.
Ringo Tsukimiya: Hehe. Thank you.
He naturally escorts Sensei as if it were choreographed from the beginning, and they dance in the radiant light.
And then, the princess stretches out his hand toward the foreign prince and sharp-eyed young man.
I know nothing about social dancing, but it's a breathtakingly beautiful sight.
I’m fascinated by the luxurious atmosphere and everyone’s charm, butー
Cecil Aijima: Camus! Please stop that!
During the break as the lighting is being adjusted, I hear Cecil-san express his displeasure.
At his voice, Camus-senpai turns around.
Camus: You’re being loud, Aijima. Can you not be a little quieter? What are you telling me to stop, anyway?
Cecil Aijima: Don’t play dumb! You hit me upside the head when we passed each other during filming!
Huh…? Did Senpai really do such a thing?
It may have been because I was watching from afar, but he remained elegant, graceful and completely attentive until the very end…
Camus: I’m sorry about that, Your H-i-g-h-n-e-s-s.
His mocking attitude confirms Cecil-san’s words to be true.
Camus-senpai crosses his legs in his chair and glances at Cecil-san as though he were an idiot.
Camus: However, isn't it worse to have you sticking your head in my way every time I walk by?
Cecil Aijima: I am not sticking out my head on purpose!
And this leads the two of them to begin arguing.
I’d thought since they were from royal and aristocratic families, on top of having lived together during the Master Course, that they were sure to get along.
Are they not on good terms with each other?
Ranmaru Kurosaki: Seriously… What a brat.
Kurosaki-senpai is reading a magazine and merely turns to glance, but just as quickly turns to look away.
Tsukimiya-sensei is away from his seat and in a meeting with staffー
W-what should I do? S-should I stop them?
Select the phrase!
Keep watching (+15 Love)
Although Camus-senpai had been working perfectly up to that point, to have hit Cecil-san’s head during the filming…
I decide to just watch as the scene unfolds.
Cecil Aijima: Camus! Please apologize honestly. Even if I was in the way, I did not mean to do it on purpose!
Camus: ‘Not on purpose’? Well then, there really is no helping you. You’re an incredibly thickheaded cat.
Cecil Aijima: What do you mean...?
Camus: Listen well, fool. In what kind of situation do you need to get close enough for me to be able to hit you on the head where the camera could see you?
Haruka Nanami: Ah…
Maybe he’s referring to Cecil-san’s placement?
The blocking for this scene is difficult with four people moving to the same place at the same time.
For him to get so close that Camus-senpai can secretly hit Cecil-san on the head probably meant that the two of them were being filmed over each other depending on the position of the camera.
I’m sure this is what Camus-senpai is trying to tell him.
Cecil Aijima: Ugh… I wish you would just say that.
Cecil-san mumbles a complaint, causing Senpai to glare at him and retort with, “Would you want me to ruin the mood by saying something unnecessary during the shoot?”
He went on to add that it should be expected that Cecil-san would be able to notice and react accordingly to his co-stars' every move; that he needed to understand this level of detail before saying anything else.
Haruka Nanami: That surely… may be…
It may have been a little harsh, but Camus-senpai is coaching Cecil-san.
Cecil Aijima: Ugh…
Camus: What’s wrong? Your senior has taught you. Don’t you have anything to say?
Cecil Aijima: Guh… T-thank you… v-very much…
Camus: Hmph. What’s the point in saying thanks when it’s asked of you? It’s best not to say anything in that case.
Cecil Aijima: Camus! You just want to say I am wrong no matter what I do!
Camus: And you just noticed? My, a cat’s brain is smaller than that of a human, so it’s no wonder you’re so stupid.
H-huh… Just as I suspected, he just wants to be mean, doesn’t he..?
Cecil Aijima: I am not a cat! I am also not stupid! Did you know in Japan those who call others stupid are the stupid ones!
Camus: Oh? Well then, you just said ‘stupid’ so you’re also as stupid as I thought.
Cecil Aijima: Non! This only applies to the first person who said it!
Ringo Tsukimiya: Hey. What were you two up to while I was gone?
Just as it seems like things are about to get even worse, Tsukimiya-sensei returns, and the studio grows calm and bright again.
Ringo Tsukimiya: Alright, that’s enough fighting; let’s take some more shots. Kurorin, can you stand by too?
Ranmaru Kurosaki: I’m always ready, Tsukimiya-san.
Tsukimiya-sensei also urges Camus-senpai and Cecil-san to return to their previous positions; they reluctantly comply.
Ringo Tsukimiya: Now, let’s do this. Camus-chan.
Camus: It goes without saying—I’ll show you the perfect attendant.
When the filming begins again, Camus-senpai’s demeanor changes, becoming as serene as he was before the break.
There is no trace of animosity in his attitude towards Cecil-san, who was initially unhappy as well, but soon regains his on-camera face—
After that, the filming goes smoothly.
At the end of the commercial’s filming, I make my way back toward Camus-senpai to introduce myself again.
Haruka Nanami: Excuse me, Senpai…
Camus: ...What? Ah, you little girl.
He glares at me when I call out to him while he’s preparing to go home. He looks very… morose.
Haruka Nanami: Hello, I’m Haruka Nanami. I just wanted to say…
Camus: So, you’re my partner… What a great nuisance.
His gaze bores into mine, his voice like ice. It’s such a stark difference from his gentle demeanor during filming that I couldn't help but feel tense.
I, however, couldn’t let myself get intimidated.
Haruka Nanami: Yes. And as your partner, I will create a song that will make you shine. I look forward to working with you on this!
I bow deeply.
I remain that way and do not move, I hear his voice from over my head.
Camus: An idiot like you is going to create a ‘song that will make me shine’? I’m quite amazed and frankly speechless. Know your place and then open your mouth to speak, fool.
Haruka Nanami: I-I’m sorry. But, I…
Sure, I may not know how to write music for him, but he should understand my enthusiasm. When I go to open my mouth again, he lets out a huff through his nose.
Camus: But… this is also work. I will be your partner as long as Saotome orders me to.
However, recognize I do not approve of you. Let me be the first to say I’m not even interested in the unit or the song festival.
Of course, how you debut is up to you. Just don’t expect me to cooperate.
Haruka Nanami: That’s…
I’m at a loss for words at his remarks, more cruel than I could have imagined.
Camus: All you have to do is be good and bring me a song. As it is a job, I know that I have to keep up appearances, so I'll even take a quick look. Don't expect anything more than that.
Haruka Nanami: U-uh... But… What about the meetings and…?
I'm so baffled that words fail me. Can I really make a good song without his help?
Camus: I don’t care. What are you doing now? This conversation is over. Get lost. You’re an eyesore.
Camus-senpai spits out coldly from over his shoulder and drives me away from the studio.
Haruka Nanami: ...Hah.
I trudge along the sidewalk on my walk home from the studio.
Haruka Nanami: I was prepared, I had meant to do it, but…
I feel depressed thinking back to Camus-senpai’s cold gaze and unforgiving words.
He at least agreed to be my partner but…
Can I even make a unit and solo song this way?
Haruka Nanami: ...This is bad. This can’t be.
I shake my head.
I’m certainly shocked to be told he’s not interested so frankly…
But remembering the hospitality I noticed during the commercial’s filming, surely… he’s not just a cold person. That’s what I’d like to think.
Haruka Nanami: I have to do my best…
That’s when I notice a shadow stretching out over the road.
It’s…
Cecil Aijima: I had been waiting for you, my princess.
Haruka Nanami: Cecil-san...
Cecil Aijima: I have something to tell you. Please allow me a little bit of your time.
Cecil and I go to a nearby cafe to talk.
Cecil Aijima was scouted by the agency around the same time as the rest of us.
I was so busy with work since I joined the agency that I hadn’t seen much of him around.
He’s always gentle and kind and his strange remarks can be surprising at times, but he’s overall a very good friend.
I didn’t tell him this, but Cecil-san has the same colored eyes and ambiance to that of a black cat I had before.
Sometimes, I get this odd sense of familiarity with him.
I wonder what that black cat was doing now— his name was Kuppuru.
Cecil Aijima: Haruka. I heard you had chosen Camus as your partner. I am against it.
The minute Cecil-san sits down, he speaks with a serious expression on his face.
Haruka Nanami: You’re… against it?
I absentmindedly repeat his words and he nods in agreement.
Cecil Aijima: YES. Camus is a cold person. You are bound to get hurt. I do not want to see you hurt.
Haruka Nanami: Cecil-san…
He looks worried. He went as far as to even wait for me.
Cecil Aijima: You are a shining flower. I want you to always smile. That would not be possible with Camus. Please end your partnership with him.
It’s because I’m feeling so down that his kindness fills me with warmth.
However…
Haruka Nanami: Yes, Camus-senpai’s attitude may feel a little cold. I thought he was a little scary if I’m being completely honest.
But, during today’s filming, he paid careful attention when he escorted Tsukimiya-sensei.
I could tell when they interacted that the staff trusted him…
If he were truly a cold and scary person and treated his job as just work, he wouldn’t pay extra care to his surroundings like that...
I share these thoughts with Cecil-san.
Haruka Nanami: I looked at that and thought he could probably be a kind person after all. And, about you too, even though you’d fought, I think he was trying to help you as your senior.
To say that I am not afraid of Senpai is a lie, but I do absolutely want to try my best. Cecil-san looks sad at my response.
Cecil Aijima: Non. That is only when he is working.
Camus working is amazing. I am grateful for his guidance. I even… hold some respect for him.
But if he were to become your partner, you would meet the side of Camus outside of that. Everyday Camus is a cruel person.
Cecil-san’s body begins to tremble and his fingers curl, he speaks.
Cecil Aijima: Bully, tyrant, liar, selfish, ruins his food, sleeps weird, does not respect the Muse, violent, quick to yell.
Haruka Nanami: I-is that so..?
Cecil Aijima: That is not all. Camus does not listen to people. He will say one thing, and then turn around and say something completely different with no issue. He likes fish. He likes dogs.
Haruka Nanami: Uh… Fish and... dogs?
Cecil Aijima: Fish and dogs are terrible creatures! Camus knows I am not good with dogs yet he allows one to roam freely in his room!
He lied to me about the fact there was no fish and made me eat okaka with tuna!
Haruka Nanami: Well that… you know, it was to train you… and fish is really nutritious…
Cecil Aijima: Non! He just likes to see people upset! I know what that kind of people are called in Japan. He is ‘rotten to the core’!
Haruka Nanami: That’s...
Cecil-san is a very straight-forward person, he’s clear about what he likes and what he dislikes.
But he usually isn’t one to talk bad about others.
To have him speaking like this… what happened during the Master Course?
Cecil Aijima: Besides, Camus holds no love for music.
Haruka Nanami: Eh...?
As I look up in surprise, Cecil-san quietly lowers his head.
Cecil Aijima: Camus does not love music. He does not care about music. And the music does not love him.
Haruka Nanami: He… doesn’t love music?
Um, are you sure you’re not mistaken? I think his songs are very wonderful…
Up until now, I’ve listened to his singing a couple of times. I find his clean singing to be charming and the reason why I want to be his partner.
His music is highly regarded by the public; there’s no way they could be wrong.
I don’t believe that people who sing like that could hold no love for music….
Cecil Aijima: I have received guidance from Camus, so I am aware. There is no doubt that his music is amazing. It captivated people. But, there is no love there.
Creating a song for Camus would be like sowing seeds on the icy ground. No flower will bloom. Even if it is you.
When he finishes speaking, his gaze looks very sad.
Haruka Nanami: Cecil-san…
Cecil Aijima: If you stay together with Camus, your dreams will not come true. Please. Please change your partner to anybody else.
I realized then that Cecil-san was sincerely looking out for me.
What should I do...?
Select the phrase!
It’s something I’ve decided for myself (+15 Love)
Haruka Nanami: This is something I decided for myself after all, so I’m going to try and pull through to the end. Besides, I couldn’t think of him as such a heartless person...
Cecil Aijima: Gosh! Muse, you are too kind. Someday, you will be in danger. Your kindness will end up getting you hurt.
Haruka Nanami: I’m sorry. But… I want to do my best.
Cecil-san’s gaze lowers and then he quietly nods when I convey my decision.
Cecil Aijima: All right. If you say so, then I can not oppose it.
But, Muse. Whenever you begin to think you can not stand it, please call out to me. I will definitely come to rescue you.
Haruka Nanami: Thank you for worrying about me, but I’ll be okay.
But...
Should I get into any real trouble, I’ll come talk to you again.
Cecil Aijima: Yes! My princess!
Cecil-san beams happily and we leave the coffee lounge together.
From that day on, I began my research to learn more about Camus-senpai’s working habits.
If he really holds no interest or love for music, then why does he sing?
For what reason did he come to Japan and join the Shining Agency?
I read several articles Camus-senpai appeared in with books and magazines, and when I gathered the courage, repeatedly asked questions to the people around me.
Haruka Nanami: He’s really reserved, there isn’t much to be said…!
But, I didn’t gather much information like I thought I would.
Haruka Nanami: Well… Seeing as he comes from a family of nobility, he’s typically called the count idol or noble idol…
Recently it seems his elegant demeanor and his treatment of fans as if they were proper ladies has made him popular on TV.
His style of performance is referred to as “Butler Idol”. The earl acting as a butler. It’s a little strange to think about.
Haruka Nanami: Is ‘Camus’ a stage name...?
His name had been announced as just ‘Camus’. I’m not even sure if that’s his last name either. The only other things I know are that he has a dog named Alexander and he loves Japanese sweets.
According to Shinomiya-san, an animal lover, Camus-senpai’s dog is a ‘veeery cute doggie!’, but...
Haruka Nanami: What Shinomiya-san considers to be ‘cute’ is very broad, so it probably isn’t… the best to go off of.
He’s even called a shoebill, quite a scary-looking bird, cute before…
Then again, anything smaller than himself is good enough to be cute for Shinomiya-san.
And then, Jinguji-san mentioned a little amusedly that “when he and I work together, he’d often tell me to just ‘get in the car.'"
Haruka Nanami: Is he close to Jinguji-san...? Then again, Jinguji-san’s a friendly person to just about anyone.
It looks like there’s no one in the agency who he’s personally close with.
Any official announcements coming from the office for the fans are, for the most part, unremarkable.
It wasn’t any help to scroll through the internet with its lack of credibility either.
In the end, I couldn't find anything close to Camus’ true face.
A few days later, my four senpai and I gather in one of the agency’s conference rooms to hold a meeting for the unit song.
I have to create the unit song first in order to avoid getting let go from the agency.
...At last, it’s starting now. This is my last chance. I have to pull myself together.
I tightly grip the handle of the briefcase I’ve brought with me. Inside is the sample to the unit song I’ve been working on over the past few days.
It was created with the idea of showcasing each of their personalities. It’ll be okay; I’m sure they’ll like it.
Reiji Kotobuki: So, should we take a look at whatcha got, Kouhai-chan?
Everyone's gaze falls on me and I stand while gulping.
Thinking back to the simulation I repeated numerous times in my room yesterday, I began my speech.
Haruka Nanami: ... that is what I think.
And seeing as this unit song is so highly anticipated, I want this to showcase everyone’s personalities.
Ai Mikaze: In short, what is it exactly?
Haruka Nanami: In the beginning, there are abundant solo parts, as highlighting your individualities will build anticipation for what would happen if we joined them together. Everyone will sing in these parts and the last one.
Ranmaru Kurosaki: Get them excited with a bang? Well…That ain’t bad.
Haruka Nanami: And then, If I were to make a pattern of two pairs singing at a time, then we could demonstrate tons of diversity within one song.
Reiji Kotobuki: Hn. It’s easy to say, but can we pull it off? We’re pretty disconnected as it stands.
Haruka Nanami: I have made a sample. I hope for you to listen and tell me what you think…
Thanks to prior practice, I’m able to express my opinions relatively well.
Kotobuki-senpai didn’t spoil me too much, but he looks ready to listen.
Mikaze-senpai and Kurosaki-senpai are distant, but at least their ears are turned to me, indicating they’re listening.
The only one who gives no kind of response is Camus-senpai, who seems quite displeased as he looks down at the book he has on hand.
Ranmaru Kurosaki: Oi, Camus. What the hell are you doing? Not a damn thing! This woman should be making the unit song with the help of her partner.
Camus: I don't care. It’ll be alright as long as I perform the song. Kurosaki, didn’t you also have no interest in the unit?
Ranmaru Kurosaki: Ah? I just took up the responsibility that comes with the job.
Camus: ‘‘Just took up the responsibility’’? To have a change of heart for such a reason is typical of a man that lacks pride.
Kurosaki-senpai's brow twitches and shoots up.
Ranmaru Kurosaki: You’re kidding me. You’re always kissin’ up to the audience, who the hell are you to talk?
Camus: No matter what I show on the outside, I’m still myself. I will never cooperate with a deadbeat like you. You disgraced scion.
Ranmaru Kurosaki: What’d you say?
Kurosaki-senpai stands from his chair at Camus-senpai’s words.
Ranmaru Kurosaki: You bastard. You’re seriously aggravating. Wearing such a cheap suit.
This time, Camus-senpai’s brow twitches. He places his book on the table and slowly stands from his own seat.
And then, the two of them begin to glare at each other with fire in their eyes.
Camus: I believe ‘cheap’ is a word that exists for you, Kurosaki.
Ranmaru Kurosaki: Look in the mirror! What is even goin’ on with that white suit? You want me to force-feed you curry udon and stain your suit yellow? Huh??
Camus: Um… What is curry udon?
Kurosaki-senpai hesitates for a second, Camus-senpai asking with a serious expression.
But Camus-senpai looks curious. It seems he really doesn't know what curry udon is.
Ranmaru Kurosaki: Are...Are you tryin’ to make me look stupid?
Camus: Huh? Do you think I have the kind of time to tell an idiot that he's being stupid?
Reiji Kotobuki: Now, now, you two. Play nice, play niiiice. A friend’s friend is everyone’s friend!
Ranmaru Kurosaki: Shut up. Back off, Reiji.
Camus: I don’t have any friends here.
Reiji Kotobuki: Guh-
Kotobuki-senpai tries to put himself in between Camus-senpai and Kurosaki-senpai’s glaring match, but is quickly pushed away by the both of them.
Haruka Nanami: Ah! Kotobuki-senpai!
Reiji Kotobuki: There, there. Settle down, you two! Peace is number one. Love and Peace!…………Guh?!
Kotobuki-senpai’s face is sandwiched between two protruding hands.
Reiji Kotobuki: M-mugyuuu… It huwts...
Ranmaru Kurosaki: ...Yeah. Oh yeah, I just had a good idea. Let’s make a 3 person unit. The earl will have to withdraw due to injury.
When Kotobuki-senpai is finally let go, Kurosaki-senpai snaps his fingers.
Camus: Don't you mean to say you'll be the one leaving? It’ll surely be more comfortable not having to be disturbed by such noise.
Camus-senpai grins, and with a laugh, rolls up his sleeves. This is really turning into a dangerous situation.
Reiji Kotobuki: Ah, that hurt. Excuse me? I’m an idol whose face is his livelihoodー!
Ai Mikaze: Hah... A waste of time. They’ve wasted five minutes and thirty seconds. Unbelievable.
W-what should I do...? There are still things that need to be discussed…
Select the phrase!
Do my best (+20 Love)
Haruka Nanami: E-excuse me! Please, listen!!
Nobody will listen to what I have to say at this rate. I earnestly raise my voice.
Camus: What...? Did you say something, fool?
Camus-senpai’s glare turns my way.
How… scary.
But, I can’t give up now.
Haruka Nanami: I-I did! Let’s continue the meeting. You may not want to, but it will never end if we don’t continue, so…
Camus: Hmph. Did they add another noisy animal? You must have a grand proposal to have responded with such a proud mouth.
Haruka Nanami: I-I… do have an idea…
As you previously mentioned at the press conference, everyone’s genre and voice is incredibly different.
When the unit was announced, I’m sure fans were wondering about what kind of song will end up being produced.
It’s exactly because of your prominent differences that if this song is done well, it will exceed everyone’s expectations. I want to amaze your fans.
The president must have formed this unit because he had high hopes for the four of them. I sincerely spoke to him in hopes that he would rejoin the meeting.
Haruka Nanami: And so… I want to make an idol-like song!
Ranmaru Kurosaki: Idol-like song...?
Haruka Nanami: Y-yes. Despite your differences, you’re all proud idols from Shining Agency and the president is anticipating it too…
At the mention of the president, Camus-senpai seems to ponder on it a little.
Camus: ...The president's expectations? Very well. Let’s hear the sample.
With a sullen look on his face, he sinks back into his chair.
Haruka Nanami: U-understood. I’ll get ready.
Camus-senpai’s attitude quickly changes. What could have happened?
It worries me, but it’d be troublesome if another fight broke out again. I quickly prepare.
Haruka Nanami: Well then, please listen.
SONG: "QUARTET NIGHT" (S RANK)
Ai Mikaze: Eeh... I’m surprised. If you’ve done this much at this rate, we’ll have to revise the estimate of completion.
Mikaze-senpai eyes widen just a little.
Haruka Nanami: T-thank you very much.
Ai Mikaze: I simply evaluated the current sample. Don’t get too excited.
The other two seem to enjoy the sample.
The only one who wouldn’t express whether they like it or not is Camus-senpai.
The gloomy look on his face didn’t change from before he had listened to the sample.
Haruka Nanami: Camus-senpai… how was it?
Camus: Hmph. If the other three don't have any objections, then that’s fine. Keep going.
That’s all he would say before he stood and promptly left the meeting room.
Reiji Kotobuki: Wait, wait, are you going home? A-ah. He left. Myu-chan’s cold!
Ranmaru Kurosaki: Tsk… I seriously can’t stand that guy.
Ai Mikaze: Well, he’s said he’s come to his conclusion, so he’s free to leave.
The sound of footsteps fade and silence falls in the conference room.
As Kurosaki-senpai and Mikaze-senpai explained, ‘the conversation is over’, so they pull out their magazines and laptop respectively.
Haruka Nanami: Um…
Ai Mikaze: What is it? Is there still something you’d like to discuss?
Haruka Nanami: Ah, no… I’ve said everything I wanted to at this point.
Ai Mikaze: I see. Good work today.
I don’t think I’m going to have any further discussions with them.
I wonder if I should leave too.
As I was trying to pack up my things, Kotobuki-senpai rests his chin on the table and smiles.
Reiji Kotobuki: So, how’s it going, Kouhai-chan? Is everything going good with Myu-chan?
Kotobuki-senpai doesn’t compromise when it comes to his work, but is normally a very cheerful and fun person.
It appears he’s talking about Camus-senpai when he says ‘Myu-chan’.
That senpai is… Myu-chan. Kotobuki-senpai is kind of incredible.
Haruka Nanami: About that, he… Camus-senpai is a man of many mysteries.
That’s it. If I ask the three people who work with him the most, I may end up discovering something.
Haruka Nanami: Excuse me, everyone. If you don’t mind, could you please tell me something about Camus-senpai?
Hope fills my gaze, but the kind of answer I receive is...
Ranmaru Kurosaki: Ah? I don’t know anything about that idiot. He’s annoying. That’s it.
This is not good.
According to Kotobuki-senpai, Camus-senpai doesn’t talk much about himself.
Ai Mikaze: All I have is some data on Silk Palace from when Camus starts to boast.
Mikaze-senpai taps at the keys on his laptop and shows me his screen.
Camus-senpai’s country… It’s a country so far north that one can view the aurora.
It is said that although a blizzard sweeps around it, it’s probably because of its terrain that the country itself is blessed with mild weather and is often referred to as a paradise of permafrost.
The queen is deified and their industries are very well developed.
Ai Mikaze: Ranmaru’s watch was manufactured in Silk Palace.
Ranmaru Kurosaki: What? Seriously?...But I actually like it.
Camus-senpai is very proud of his country and talks about it often.
From the queen, to the palace, to the nobles…
For me, a normal person from Japan, it’s like talking about a completely different world.
Reiji Kotobuki: Myu-chan doesn’t really talk much at all. All he does is just quietly read books. Well, Ranran and Ai-Ai are pretty quiet too~.
Kotobuki-senpai jokes around, but the other two completely ignore him.
Reiji Kotobuki: Ooh, you two should cooperate a little more. If Kouhai-chan doesn’t do well with Myu-chan, it could affect our unit song.
Ranmaru Kurosaki: I don’t know what I don’t know… Speaking of his sweet tooth, he’ll eat about five youkan before a live show. It gives me heartburn just thinkin’ about it.
He carries around his own sugar and his own condensed milk. If he were to fall to the ground, ants are definitely gonna be paying him a visit.
Ai Mikaze: And then… You’re right. When it comes to Camus, sometimes it yields contradictory data.
Haruka Nanami: So does that... imply that Camus-senpai is a liar?
Reiji Kotobuki: Ah—I’m pretty sure Myu-chan is a liar. He has tons of secrets. He’s discreet, keeping secrets from everyone.
He looks busy even on his days off and he never shares why.
Kotobuki-senpai tried to send him a New Year’s card once and asked for his address, but he was ignored.
They all lived in dormitories during the Master Course, but have now returned to their own homes.
Ranmaru Kurosaki: I don’t blame him for blowing you off, Reiji. No one wants your family’s bento shop New Year’s card.
Reiji Kotobuki: That’s not the problem. There is such a thing as being too secretive even for an idol.
Ai Mikaze: You see, that’s also not at all what I was saying. I was talking more in regards to the laws of physics.
… What does that even mean?
Ai Mikaze: I’m not going to think about it too hard. I don’t want to overheat.
Ranmaru Kurosaki: What are you? A car in the summer? I don't get you.
In the end, it seems like there are a lot of mysteries about Camus-senpai for the others as well.
In the days following, I looked into Camus-senpai further but came up with absolutely nothing.
Haruka Nanami: He’s keeping his secrets from everyone...
What bothers me after all of this was what Kotobuki-senpai said a couple of days ago.
Haruka Nanami: What in the world is Camus-senpai doing?
I want to know more about him. However, his attitude hasn’t changed and I highly doubt that he would want to talk.
Not being able to come up with a solution, I bury my head in my arms.
Haruka Nanami: Ah… It’s time already.
I had completely immersed myself in my work today in the studio and the day came to an end before I even noticed.
Tomorrow will come quickly, so I have to hurry home. Before that, I have to return loaned materials back to the agency….
There’s no sense of night or day in the entertainment business, but it seems like today everyone rushed home and all was incredibly silent through the agency’s corridor.
Haruka Nanami: It’s a little scary….
I carry a paper bag full with the materials and walk shakily down the dimly-lit corridor.
Then, a white shadow crosses my field of vision and I instinctually cry out.
Haruka Nanami: J-just now…
Camus-senpai?
It was definitely Camus-senpai who had turned the corner at the end of the corridor.
There weren’t any plans to come by the agency today according to his schedule, so what could he be doing at this hour?
Select the phrase!
Call out to him (+20 Love)
This is a valuable opportunity to find someone who is always busy like him to be alone. It may be rude to do so right now, but this might be my chance to talk to him. I trot over to the corner where I had seen him disappear.
Haruka Nanami: Excuse me…
I find him again in the back of the corridor and go to open my mouth so I can call out to him but—
Camus: Hmm. Is it okay to do this here…?
That’s when he goes into one of the conference rooms.
Haruka Nanami: Senpai…
As I raise my hand to try and knock on the door, a white light appears from inside.
Camus: It’s me… is it urgent? This isn’t a good place right now. Keep it short.
I hear Camus-senpai from the other side of the door speaking to someone in a low whisper.
I wonder if he’s on the phone in there. He’s speaking in a pretty serious tone.
I knew that I shouldn’t, but I couldn’t help but strain my ears and listen.
But, why hasn’t he properly turned on the lights?
The white light coming from the door didn’t look like light that would come from a flashlight either.
Thinking this to be strange, I listen to more of his voice.
Camus: It’s about Saotome’s assassination...?
Haruka Nanami: Eh…?
My heart skips a beat and I look up in surprise.
I feel like I heard something very scary just now. Did I get it wrong? But, I definitely…
Camus: Understood. Leave it to me. I am also curious to know what the chancellor’s party is doing. What it is they could be after in this country… Yes, goodbye.
The white light abruptly goes out at the same time his voice stops.
I notice and my heart begins to beat rapidly. I have a feeling I just heard something I wasn’t really supposed to…
What could Camus-senpai have been talking about? Was he rehearsing lines from a play or drama?
But, he had absolutely said ‘Saotome’. Did this happen to have the same name as the president?
In addition to saying, ‘chancellor’...
Come to think of it, he came from a family who has served under their queen for generations…
I hear a crash come from within the conference room and I snap out of my reverie.
I need to leave now. It’s not good to eavesdrop.
When I turn away with that in mind, the light from within the room reappears.
The light this time was much bigger than before. But it was not a candle or flashlight, it was a white and cold light.
Camus: Your Majesty. My sincerest apologies for the abruptness. But, has there been any unusual activity within the chancellor’s party recently?
I’m once again surprised by Camus-senpai, who, when he begins to speak again, uses a gentle tone entirely different from anything he’s used prior.
He has a soft way of speaking when behaving himself as an idol, but this is different. This may be the first time I’ve heard anything like it.
I’m curious, but in any case, I can’t stay here. I slowly begin to back away.
Camus: I expect to have something useful to report on Saotome’s case in the near future… I understand. Everything is at Your Majesty’s mercy.
Saotome’s case? It really was about the president…?
Haruka Nanami: Ack!
I end up kicking something and accidentally dropping my paper bag.
The materials scatter around the corridor where I stand and the loud noise it makes resounds throughout the hall.
Camus: Who’s there!?
In that second, the conference room’s door is aggressively flung open together with the sound of a sharp voice.
Shoot.
W-what should I do? I try to hurry and escape, but it’s too late. I’m frozen in place.
He walks into the corridor and I gingerly try to raise my head.
His icy eyes bore into mine from above.
Camus: You… What are you doing here?
Haruka Nanami: I-I’m sorry. I-I didn’t mean to overhear stuff about ‘S-Saotome’ or ‘Your Majesty’ in the first place…
I incoherently try to come up with excuses. I’m not even sure what I was saying.
Camus: Did you seriously hear all of that just now…?
Haruka Nanami: I-I am really sorry. Truly, t-that…
Camus: If that’s what you heard, then I cannot let you live.
He draws closer as his unfeeling gaze pierces through me.
I’m taken outside after being caught by Camus-senpai.
As I’m being led, I trudge along the night road.
Haruka Nanami: Um... Where are we headed?
Camus: ...
He says nothing and continues onward.
Eventually, we arrive at a great forest.
There are no streetlights, the inside of the forest appears to be pitch black, and nothing can be seen farther in.
I drag my feet, but he doesn’t hesitate to go in.
Haruka Nanami: Um…
Camus: Silence. Stay quiet and follow me.
It’s so dark inside that I can barely see out in front of me. Whenever the leaves sway, I feel as though something is about to jump out at me, and I can’t help but tremble.
What’s going to happen now? He said I couldn’t live; would he, in these woods...
Camus: What are you doing? We’re here.
With a twitch, I raise my head and—
There stands a gloomy tower, it looks like a vampire’s mansion.
Camus-senpai reaches the entrance of the tower and into his pocket where he takes out a key. With a familiar hand, he uses the key to open the door.
Camus: I’m home.
Eh...? Wait. I-is this Camus-senpai’s home?
Alexander: Bark. Bark bark bark.
Just then, a big dog jumps out.
Camus: Sorry for being late, Alexander. Did you get to eat well?
He breaks out into a smile and strokes Alexander’s well-groomed, beautiful fur.
Alexander: Arf arf.
The dog’s happy expression as he licks Senpai’s hand, unbefitting of his slightly scary face.
Alexander is definitely the name of his pet dog. This is his home, after all.
Camus: There, there. I very much want to play, but there are still some things I need to do. Wait a second, Alexander.
Alexander: Ruff!
Once he barks, he obediently follows Senpai’s order and goes to curl up by the side of the sofa.
The sofa is very beautifully made of leather. A chandelier hangs from the room’s ceiling; deep-crimson carpet covers the floor. A white fireplace, candle stands on the wall.
Its luxury fails to make me think this could be a personal residence, but it really is… Camus-senpai’s home, isn’t it…?
With eyes narrowed, he looks away from his dog and turns to face me.
Camus: Now then… To you. What were you doing there?
I cower under his icy glare. I frantically open my mouth to try to explain myself.
Haruka Nanami: U-um, I-I, I-I’m terribly sorry. I just wanted to know more about you in order to write a song…
I hadn’t gone to the office with the intention of eavesdropping. I speak as though my life depends on it, but his face only grew grim.
Camus: I see. I thought there had been someone sniffing me out these past few days… it was you?
His hand reaches out to take hold of my head, forcing me to look at him.
Haruka Nanami: Ah…
Suddenly, I notice his cold stare. I’m frozen with fear, for I could not turn my eyes away with my head caught.
Camus: You've crossed the line even for the likes of a fool. So, how much of it did you hear?
Scary. He’s incredibly furious. I shudder from feeling the temperature around me drop.
Haruka Nanami: I… I-I… I didn’t hear anything…
Camus: Oh? So, now you’re lying to me? How brave of you.
His icy gaze turns even sharper.
Haruka Nanami: I-I’m sorry… I heard about… the chancellor. Ah, and an assasination…
Camus: Is that so?
He gives a pleasant smile.
Camus: I really cannot let you live now that you’ve heard all that.
Haruka Nanami: I-I-I am terribly sorry! I will never ever tell anyone, so please…
Camus: Silence. You were looking into me, yet say this was just a blunder made by an airhead? Can I truly trust the words from someone like that?
Haruka Nanami: I-I’m sorry. T-that’s not at all what I meant, but…
He looks down at me, as I tremble with fear, and furrows his brows a bit.
Camus: But… it’d cause a lot of trouble if you were to suddenly disappear. And if I were to let you go then…
He seems to ponder on it for a while before looking as though he’s finally come to some kind of conclusion. He grins.
Without needing to think about it, a shudder runs down my back at his expression. He abruptly releases me from his grip and I fall onto the floor.
Haruka Nanami: Hyah!
He slowly approaches the sofa and sits, crossing his legs as he looks down on me.
Camus: I cannot allow you to live, but I’m no demon either. If you were to swear yourself to me and become my servant, it’d be the only way to save yourself. How does that sound?
Haruka Nanami: S-servant?! W-why is that the…
Camus: What? It’s really more on the terms of maid… It’s troublesome to always have to call for house cleaning; I merely want to have someone for myself.
He spares a glance around the extravagant room.
It does seem like it’d be difficult to clean, but…
Camus: There’s no worries if you want to say no. Suit yourself. Though… you do realize what will occur if you refuse?
W-what should I do? I hate the thought of becoming a servant.
But, what would happen to me if I were to refuse?
His expression is serious and he doesn’t seem to be taking this lightly.
My body refuses to move as though I were a frog trapped by the incredibly terrifying gaze of a snake.
Camus: I’ll give you only three seconds. Answer quickly. Now… will you or will you not become my servant?
Select the phrase!
If I have no other choice (+30 Love)
I hate it so much, but I have no choice. I part my trembling lips.
Haruka Nanami: Alright…
Camus: Oh? So you do have the ability to make the right decisions after all. I commend you.
He grins and chuckles, reaching out to trace my lip with his fingertip.
Camus: You wished for it with these lips, don’t forget that.
Haruka Nanami: Y-yes…
How did this happen? I shouldn’t have eavesdropped… but, there’s nothing I can do about my thoughtless act now.
Haruka Nanami: I’m incredibly sorry. W-Well… If you’ll excuse me…
I quickly lower my head and try to rush out of the room, but his hand catches me again.
Camus: Don’t play jokes with me. Did you think you could go home?
Haruka Nanami: Eh, I…
He laughs and locks the door with his free hand.
Haruka Nanami: Camus-senpai…?
Camus: Why are you surprised? Didn’t you agree to work for me today? I have a lot for you to do immediately.
Only a short moment later, a mop is promptly presented to me.
Wait… What?
Haruka Nanami: Starting now…? But, it’s already getting really late…
Who knows what time I’ll be able to go home if I start cleaning right now…
Camus: What are you talking about? It won’t be necessary to go home, you have work tomorrow and the day after, as well.
Haruka Nanami: Eh…Um…
Camus: Don’t worry about where you’ll be sleeping. I’m a kind master and will prepare a comfortable sofa for you. I appreciate you.
He laughs happily and calls towards the back of the room.
Camus: Rejoice, Alexander! Your handler is here!
Alexander: Bark bark bark!
And just like that, he turns around and goes farther inside.
I’m left alone and, with a mop in my hand, I stand there dumbfounded.
Haruka Nanami: Did that just…
Then, to be trapped in this house...?
It's like a nightmare; everything is just unbelievable.
What on earth will happen now?
