#Just Jason having his adoptive author as adoptive parent

Batkids Hobby Headcanons
Dick - Gymnastics is the most obvious one. When he was younger, Bruce initially didn't want him to compete in competitions, or even join a team, because Dick would have an "unfair advantage". However, he eventually gave in and allowed him to join the school's team. Another hobby he has is baking. In most cases, he is forbid from the kitchen, however he is a fantastic baker. He is also very good at making fantastic stews, which Alfred has even claimed to be better than his own.
Jason - He's a literature nerd, with a particular love for the classics; Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte are his favorite authors. However, we all know Jason is a theater kid at heart. He did every school play at Gotham Academy, and though he hasn't acted in anything since his resurrection, he still goes to local theaters with Alfred fairly often. He's also a fantastic cook, and the only person in Wayne Manor (other than Alfred) to never receive any sort of kitchen ban.
Tim - Photography is Tim's favorite hobby. His first camera was one of the most meaningful presents from his parents when he was younger, winning several photography competitions. He hasn't indulged as often since becoming a vigilante. Barbara still keeps him on-call as her blackmail collector though, which he does happily. He's also into skateboarding, finding skate parks to be a nice escape when he needs time alone. Many of his photo shoots occurred at the skate parks, for very emotionally charged urban photography. Other than those, he likes disassembling things to see how they work. This destructive hobby was punished and frowned upon when he was younger, but when Bruce discovered that Tim enjoyed taking things apart, would start leaving things around for him to play with, like old microwaves, or failed bat-projects. Tim also loves comic books, of which he has an impressive collection.
Damian - Art is something Ra's looked down upon, calling it "weak" and "insubstantial in society". However, it was still something Damian enjoyed, so he had to keep his hobby a secret. He was terrified Bruce would kick him out, when he found the sketchbooks hidden in Damian's room, however Bruce just asked if there were any supplies Damian wanted. He's still a bit self conscious of his art, but he is more open, giving paintings to his family as gifts, and even entering in an art show. He still has a fascination with knives from his time with the League of Assassins, and enjoys collecting ones that interest him, particularly vintage knives, and unique knives made out of unconventional materials, or those with intricate designs. Jon was the one to get him into video games, which he denies enjoying, but the hours he's put into Cheese Viking would say otherwise.
Cass - Ballet was one of the first things she fell in love with after being adopted. It was so similar to how she was raised-people talking with their bodies-but without the violence she so loathed. She easily convinced Bruce to sign her up for classes, and for once, it was something she could do, to communicate with people in a way she knew well. Another interest she picked up was astrology. It was something fun that she didn't necessarily believe in, but was a comfortable guidance. Damian hand painted her a custom tarot deck, and she has a small collection of crystals she finds pretty. Zatanna has offered to enchant some of them for her, but Cass declined the offer, saying that giving them actual magic enchantments removes the aspect of belief that she found comforting. She understood that the black tourmaline necklace Bruce bought her wouldn't actually keep her safe, but it gave her comfort, and a sense of safety, especially because it was a gift from her dad. (author's note: I don't actually know that much about astrology, tarot, and crystals, so if anyone wants to add to this and give a more realistic description of how it works, I would love to see it)
Steph - similar to Dick, she is a gymnast, though not quite at Dick's level. She is also into martial arts and has taken a few classes in Taekwondo and Boxing, and whatever other free classes were being offered at the community center. Cartoons and anime are pretty big interests, as well as video games. She often jumps around from hobby to hobby, and has several miscellaneous skills in a little bit of everything. (author's note: a lot of Steph I based off of myself. She's a character I relate a lot to, so a lot of myself is projected into her. Her height and weight being one of them. However, that was also because DC doesn't seem to know what a human woman looks like, because most of the female characters in the Batfamily are 5'4" or 5'5", and around 120 lbs, including Steph. So I just borrowed by height and weight from highschool, when I was at peak physical fitness, at the gym 4 times a week, and doing 2 sports, once meeting 2 times a week and the other meeting 3 times a week. That would place her at 5'8" and 155lbs, which is far more reasonable for an active vigilante. rant over). She also feels like the kind of person who would be into scrapbooking. Most of her pictures are stolen from Tim, and the pages are brightly colored with fun stickers and glitter.
Duke - he gives off the vibe of a soccer player. However, because of his focus on school and crime fighting, he just plays for the rec team. It's a fun activity that he can enjoy when he was time, and also use to explain away his fitness level and injuries. He's also a huge movie buff, enjoying to analyze every aspect of the film, from the characters, to the camera work, to the framing of each scene. He isn't as interested in making his own movies, but gets very into it when he does. Quentin Tarantino is his favorite filmaker, however Damian has stared getting him into foreign films as well.

this is a very unpopular opinion lol but i personally think they shouldn’t have made dick as bruce’s son. dc should have just resolved their problems with them being apart as much as they can in gotham & bludhaven respectively and then fix their dynamic slowly to become healthier and then make bruce & dick as brothers instead, bcs the crux of their problems was them being equals thus being brothers would have made their standing & dynamic more even & equals. (again tho this is unpopular opinion)
I completely agree!!
I don't think they should've made dick Bruce's son. Actually the son thing I guess is fine, but there's no need to emphasize it so much because it doesn't fit their dynamic.
Tumblr media
Tale of The Teen Titans Issue #50
Dick's adoption, the way I think of it, is unnecessary.
Up until this point neither of them had even considered a father and son relationship. Their guardian and ward relationship only came up when Dick was in danger of being adopted away and Bruce starts begging and pleading about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman (1940) Issue #439
Dick says himself, "He could never be my father. I mean, I don't want another father."
Dick knew that Bruce loved him unconditionally and he was happy with that.
That's the second time when the circus wanted him but the first time, his blood relatives wanted to take Dick away from Bruce.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman (1940) Issue #20
"You can't take Dick away now! Not after all these years! He's like a son! I won't let you!"
Tumblr media
Batman (1940) Issue #20
Alfred: "M'lord...I mean your honor...I've never seen Mr. Wayne deny the young lad anything! He fair worships the boy!"
(I think Alfred's still hasn't let the chips thing go.)
Bruce: "Dick is like my own son! I've even changed my own will so that in case of my death, Dick will get my entire fortune! Your honor, I...I love that boy! Please don't take him from me!"
Dick: "A fella couldn't want a better friend!"
Bruce's relationship with Dick is complicated ranging from son to partner to brother to everything in between. Why not add Mother in it too?!
But it wasn't like Bruce's relationship with Jason and I think that makes all the difference. By the time Jason came around, Bruce and the authors finally realized how to write a father-son relationship. Up until then, Dick was just everything for Bruce and since he was written that way, the authors let him stay that way.
The adoption scene and Dick asking why Bruce didn't adopt him...here's an anology. Suppose a kid goes to school and earns a A on every test and the teacher says "good job!" and they both move on. 10 years later another kid comes along and they get an A too. The teacher has now grown in experience and wants to facilitate growth, so they have now started giving every kid that earned an A a gold star sticker on their paper. This kid takes it home to show their older brother who had that same teacher 10 years ago and the brother comments, "Oh, when I went there, she didn't give out stickers!" But now make it about family.
That's what Dick and Bruce's adoption is. The adoption paper is the gold star. Was it needed? No. Does it make people feel better? Yes.
But I don't like this formally making Dick Bruce's son thing. Sure Dick feels better about it but it was pointless and actually takes away from what their relationship really is.
In the comics, Bruce's behavior toward Jason is more parental than his was to Dick. It was more of a "let me teach you" and "ok, so this is how I do it" with Bruce and Jason. It's a teaching moment of father to son guidance. Dick and Bruce's comics were more "this is what I think" and "I see what you're thinking and I'm going to add on to that" relationship. It was a we're both going to do about 50/50 of the work.
Also Jason came to Bruce at a time when Bruce was stable and knowledgable. Dick came to Bruce at a time when Bruce was literally falling apart. If he hadn't met Dick, he would've killed himself from how reckless he was being. Finding Dick, he saved himself too.
Canonically, Dick is described as a foil to Bruce - the light to Bruce's darkness. He acted patiently listened, worked, and understood Bruce. Bruce shared his emotional burden with Dick in a way he was afraid and careful not to do with the others.
He's still doing it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman (2011) Issue #14
They're not acting like father and son, they're acting like partners.
"Oh, but the kids..."
"It's for the kids! Do this for me please."
Dick as Robin in his later years even screams at Bruce during an argument, "I'm not your son. I'm your partner."
This excessive parentification of Bruce and Dick's relationship, it's not how they function. DC somehow thinks that their loves needs definition. That it needs clear boundaries to show that Bruce loves Dick but the truth is, the devil's in the details and their relationship is riddled with them. You don't need to tell your best friend you love them, they just know. Both of you do. And DC thinks the only way to tell your best friend you love them is to tell them that which is not true.
That said, their problems only arose because Bruce was overly attached to Dick so I don't think he would've been able to let go without speaking to him. I mean, he did get captured (purposefully?) and expect Dick to just come save him just so they could start talking again during Jason's robin era and I don't know how they would fix their problems but I agree that they shouldn't be quarantined into a tiny, constrictive father and son box. They way they act around each and the demands both of them have of the other to act a certain way isn't how a father expects a son to be or a son expects a father to act. I'm not saying they aren't father and son, I just believe they're more complicated and involved than just that.

Can we have more of bff!reader who has Jason's teddy bear? I am now obsessed with the idea because you made it so cute 🖤
Bruce settled back in his chair and waited, watching the cafe patrons- Some of them had taken notice of him. But most people were too Busy trying to get their caffeine fix on the way to work to care very much about the billionaire sipping tea and people watching.
Which suited him fine. Ostensibly he was there on business.
Business he created to have an excuse to check on you, sure. But business nonetheless.
He'd never adopted you. Or even formally been your foster parent. But he felt responsible for you. Even after Jason's death.
Responsible enough that he paid your tuition and had a job in mind for you. As far as he was concerned, it wasn't exactly nepotism if you were qualified. And, in the Absence of Jason, he could think of no one better to over see the Martha Wayne foundation. If, that is, he could coax you back to Gotham.
He hadn't wanted you to go to NYU. But, he understood why you couldn't stay. Too many ghost hiding in Alleys and dark corners. Too many people too familiar with your parents. Too many memories that looked so much bleaker now that you were an adult who understood how dangerous it had been to grow up like you had. You wanted a chance to define your life on your own terms.
And when you breeze into the cafe, windblown and looking well. Bright-eyed and busy-tailed despite the hour, it sets him at ease a little.
When you spot him and give a little wave before going to order your drink, he smiles a little, not bothering to check his watch. He knew you were precisely 10 minutes early. A habit he never understood but a quirk he enjoyed.
"So do you really have things to do today or did you just want to make sure I wasn't partying too hard?" you ask teasing, dropping into a chair.
"A little of both," he allowed, "But. I thought it was a fair assumption to say your partying is still closing down the library- Babs sends her congrats on making the Dean's List Again and Alfred told me to tell you that you're on track to beat the record."
You grin at him over your paper cup and half shrug, "Everyone is good at something I guess."
And for just a second, in his mind's eye, he sees a tiny, scruffy little girl telling him matter of factly that Yesenia Pestis originated with Tobargan Marmots and gerbils- NOT black rats. Even if they did carry the bacteria, not a virus through Europe. All the while, Jason nodded in agreement.
In another life, the pair of you would have made an outstanding Author duo- And not for the first time, he wished it was another life.

Ghost Helpline part 3. Diana was shocked, hurt and elated all at once! “Your grandmother is Pandora?! I did not know that she even had a child! I am ecstatic to meet you Konstelacio. Oh my I call you cousin?” This was it! as far apart as the separation between Pandora and Themyscia may be Diana would take any family she could. The loneliness of childhood gnawed at her.
“Oh no! I’m not Pandoras Grandchild!” The girl crossed and uncrossed her arms into an X to show her dismissal, “She is a good mentor! And a wonderful family confidant! If anything she’s like my Nanny.”
Constantine began to sweat buckets.
Diana shouted, “Wait…is Pandora…” lips thinned.
“A ghost ? Yes”
- Tim stared at Konstelacio, she had begun to breathe deeply, averting her eyes from Wonder Woman, feet shuffling together. She was exhibiting shame. And Tim understood the feeling well, that you were too unworthy to even be held in comparison to someone else. Someone whose shoes you could never even dream of filling. “Do Demons have grandmas?” Uhhh speedsters.
“Yes”
“That’s so cool! Who’s yours?”
“I don’t know.”
Oh oh those golden eyes looked tired. As tired as Jason’s eyes had been after his first gala, Dick thought. They may have both been adopted but Jason was treated to so much contempt being from the streets, so much fake pity. /Oh poor kid doesn’t even know who his mom is./Dick knew Jason hated it all.
“I’m sorry!”
“It’s okay. It doesn’t matter.”
/It doesn’t matter Dick! Just drop it!/ the eldest robin frowned.
Damian tsked, “What about your parents? I would suppose even monsters need those? Also landing community service instead of some harsher punishment must mean you have some connection to authority in your ‘realm’ no?”
The little girl grinned, “Yes something like that.”
She has nearly everyone in the room duped, Constantine side eyed the Bats nearly. He knew that smile; a tad too wide eyes, a fraction to tight smile, the inexplicable about of understanding and kindness up until this point… this was the grin of a con artist.
- “I know quite a lot of important people! Why Pandora herself is my nanny! And my supervisor is my uncle.”
“Tsh- is that not a conflict of interest?”
“Doesn’t matter,” John wished he was allowed to smoke in space, “No more wasting time, now that we know you can help us what’s your price?”
“Hhhuuu what? Oh the price for the antidote will have to come later, after all you technically aren’t getting it from me. I’ll have to ask nanna and whoever else decides to help what the want. It’s only fair.”
“We see,” Batman’s low tone sounded. “And the dragon-“
Her hand stuck out shyly, “Tips are always welcomed tho…after all I am still providing a service.”
“We don’t …”
“It takes me a lot of energy and time to help you mortals so much. I’m so tired already.”
Batman’s mouth stilled, “We-“
A blur of red, “Oh are you hungry? Do you need anything? Let me get you a chair, snacks..”
“No no chair! Nothing is going threw that circle !” Constantine yelled, “Do you have any idea what could happen!”
“She’s a child!”
“She’s a demon!”
“Constantine is right.”
“Bats you can’t be serious, just look at her?”
“Flash we know your intentions are in the right place but we just can’t risk it! We also can’t risk not clearly defining what she considers a tip.” Zatanna signed how long have they been here, the girl looked harmless enough but something about her made her skin crawl.
“A favor would be nice! Especially from the red one!”
“See who knows what she could end up asking for.”
“Oh I see I’m sorry,” she looked down dejected, “ I do suppose no one carries favors for ladies around anymore hhhmmm and none of you have handkerchiefs? Awww”
“Why would you want something like that ?!?” Diana was horrified, her to be cousin was a child! No men, man, demon should be giving her favors to begin a courtship! “Flash!”
“Oh no no I wasn’t defending you to-“
“I know I know I just wanted one from you cuz you were nice to me.”
“That’s still doesn’t explain why you would ask for a favor as a tip?” Diana looked as the girl flushed in embarrassment. “I -I -I just want one to show my friends that’s all just to prove that I could get one that’s all! Uummmm cousin???” She hesitated regretful as soon as the word had come out.
“Oh I see are your friends giving you a hard time? Well I say the only one that would be appropriate to give you such a thing would be Robin… the youngest that is.”
The bats looked back at Damian oh dear lord sweat god don’t -
“Tch- here.”
Oh
Damian tossed a handkerchief towards the circle. “You just carry a handkerchief with you?” “Of course I do I’m not a heathen unlike you Drake.”
The toss was barely thrown in her direction when it disappeared entirely. “Where…”
“No worries I just put it in my inventory. Now then I’ll be on my way.”
“Wait!”
“Huh?” Big doe eyes blinked up at them all in confusion.
“The dragon! What about that thi- guy.” Hal scruffed out.
The girl brightened up, “Oh you don’t have to pay me anything for that! After all Aragon the one that broke his patrol. So I’m sure as soon as I send my report someone will come deal with it eventually.”
“Eventually?!” Hal’s hand hit the table, who was this kid?
“Well yes, tons of reports go in everyday! It is the INFINITE realms after all! Who knows when they’ll get to yours.” She shrugged as if it was all just a matter of convenience as if that very dragon haven’t terrorized and destroyed lives throwing its tantrum.
Superman chewed his lip, as this meeting contributed to drag on he had no doubt Aragon would continue to destroy everything in its path. “Wait what about your connection, surely you know someone that can help ? What about your supervisor uncle ?” Clark needed this to stop, he couldn’t even land a punch on this guy. Nothing worked and he was already weak to magic. This has to stop.
“Well I suppose I can but it’ll cost you.”
“Wait just a minute!”
“Do we even have anything you want?” Clark raked his mind over ideas in his head, for a tip all she had wanted was a handkerchief an old school way of showing off to her friends like any normal girl. “We don’t have much but I’m sure we could think of something???”
“It’s okay Mr. Superman.” Konstelacio lite up “I’ll just take something you mortals don’t really think about hhhmmm something small.”
Hal sighed as he leaned back, “You sure we can’t just give her a dog?”
“Ugh fuck this mate I need a light,” forget not being allowed to smoke up here all these idiot we’re getting on John’s last nerve, “Ugh drat! I could have sworn I had my lighter in my pocket.”
“Oh you mortals losing things in your own pocket. Oh that’s what I want in return!”
“A lighter? Smoking is -“
“I want your pockets.”
“What do you mean?”
The devil grinned, “Your pockets, empty them.”

I have this little gripe with any reading of Batman 1940 #416 that ends its analysis of Bruce and Dick's conversation by concluding that Bruce took Jason in to replace Dick. Because yes, but more importantly no. Let's break it down.
The panels that lead to the abovementioned conclusion are these:
Tumblr media
Bruce admits to having missed Dick and to having felt lonely. This can to some extent be read as in Jason replacing Dick. But I think a reasonable argument can be made that being lonely and missing one specific person doesn't mean everyone new you let into your life is just an attempt to fill in the exact position of the former person. More on how Jason is not Dick later.
But first let us consider the fact that Bruce also gives Dick a whole 4 other reasons for taking Jason in.
1. Jason seemed like the right guy for the job.
Tumblr media
2. Bruce sympathized with Jason.
Tumblr media
3. Bruce wanted to help Jason
Tumblr media
And Dick calls "Bull" on these (literally), which prompts Bruce to give another reason:
4. Bruce needed another set of hands on the job.
Tumblr media
Only after Dick calls Bruce out again does Bruce admit to having missed Dick.
Now I believe you have to give all these former reasons just as much credit as the final one. The final one isn't last because it's more true, it's last because it is the one reason Bruce doesn't want to admit to Dick. In support of my theory to all being true in different ways, we have the parallel of Dick and Bruce unmasking.
Dick begins the conversation by unmasking.
Tumblr media
And then insists upon Bruce unmasking as well.
Tumblr media
(I'm not gonna rave about the significance of the background color changing. I'm not gonna rave about the significance of the-)
In the same way Dick asks Bruce to reveal more and more about his reason to take Jason in. The interpretation if these panels hinges vitally on understanding that Bruce is Batman. That part of his identity is true. Ergo, his reasons related to Batman for taking Jason in are true. His reason as Bruce to take Jason in (sympathy, wanting to help, missing Dick) are equally true. Bruce is still himself with the mask on, he is hiding behind the truth (I am Batman) and just in the same manner he is hiding behind the truth when Dick confronts him too. All the above mentioned reasons for Bruce taking Jason in are true. Saying it was only to replace Dick is reductionist.
Now let's get to the part of my alternative interpretation of Bruce admitting he was lonely and he missed Dick. Some people have chosen to see this as meaning that Jason was there to replace Dick, but again, I think that is reductionist and simplifies the complex human connections we have with one another. There is no such thing as one person replacing another.
I'm going full death of the author with my headcanon (based on canon argumentation though) that I'm about to give, since this issue was written by Starlin and it's probably safe to assume he intended to portray Jason as a mere replacement of Dick, but less skilled at the job. (Ffffuck you Starlin.)
Dick and Bruce have a.. non-conforming realtionship. They matter a lot to one another. They are partners, the dynamic duo, but it's hard to justify labeling them as any specific kind of relationship. Bruce was too young and inexperienced to take Dick in as his son and while he did ultimately raise Dick, their relationship was too equal to really be considered as a one-way father-son relationship. Dick has left (been fired) and Bruce is left missing him. Not only missing Dick, but also mourning the opportunity he had to become a father to a young boy and he now feels he has lost. He meets another young boy. Just as parentless, just as burning with a sense of justice and willingness to fight for it. Jason and Bruce's dynamic has always been far more of the parental-child nature. Starting with the fact that Jason was actually legally adopted, but also simply going from their interactions. Bruce realized he wishes to be a father and nurture someone through Dick and he is fulfilling this desire with Jason because he feels it is too late to be a father to Dick.
And full disclosure, this last part is 100% my own wishful thinking, however there is nothing in canon that would contradict my interpretation and enough supporting evidence for it to be a possibility.
Final conclusion: no Robin, Jason, Tim, Stephanie or Damian can or should be reduced to being a replacement for the one who came before. While there will always be that aspect at play that Bruce operates with a Robin, there are always more reasons for Bruce taking in the sidekicks he ultimately does.

Focuses on: Bruce Wayne and the Fam (plus a new addition)
Favorite bookmark: "GIVE BRUCE A BABY GIRL!!!! HE IS A DESTINED GIRL DAD AND DESERVES MORE DAUGHTERS!!!! AND HE NEEDS A BABY!!!!!!"
Tier: This is #11 in terms of hits and bookmarks?? How?? #9 in terms of kudos? #19 in comments?????? #14 in subscriptions. I am baffled by this.
This is my “behind the scenes” series where I indulge myself horribly by annotating my fics. Link to the fic itself above. Thoughts below the cut.
Apparently by this point I had secured a friendship with @audreycritter because she was the one who told me about the existence of Helena Kyle, Selina's daughter, and some comic book nonsense about her maybe or maybe not being Bruce's daughter also and how in some universes Bruce helps her get adopted out and no??? J'refuse????? This is the kind of canon nonsense fic was made to fix.
The decision was a spontaneous one. Rare, for Bruce, but not as rare as some might think. Nor were his decisions—including this one—as free from consideration as the label “spontaneous” might imply. While it was true that Bruce liked to put more deliberate, conscious thought into his life choices, the pieces had already been there, facts lurking in his subconscious like mayfly larva. When the moment had arisen, those facts had sprouted wings and coalesced into a swarm.
As anyone following along has clocked, the majority of my fics start with the author going "Now let me explain something I need you to understand."
Besides, it wasn’t like he didn’t have a history of making this kind of choice before.
We stan a self-aware man.
He wouldn’t make the same mistakes as before, even if it had taken him multiple times to learn his lesson.
I do want to write that fic someday. I had a specific framework mentally charted out that would partly involve Dick learning about Jason Todd's arrival. Someday.
“Bruce!” Dick’s voice was bright and warm, flooding through the interior like sunshine.
Bruce Wayne loves Dick Grayson so. freaking. much.
He could hear Dick shifting, probably settling against a wall or filing cabinet, before prodding, “No offense, but you’re not one for mid-day, no-reason calls. What’s up?”
Ah, that familiar "okay, who died" anxiety provoked by the unexpected call of someone who doesn't do unexpected calls.
“Bruce, tell me I did not just hear what I thought I heard.” Dick’s voice was flat and preternaturally calm, a detective arriving at the scene of a crime, analyzing and struggling to withhold judgement.
Dick: oh no who died
Dick, two seconds later: oh my god not again
“You were my first call.” Bruce offered the fact quickly, an olive branch to shelter under. He kept one hand on the wheel, one hand on the fussing baby in the backseat, and his focus on getting through this call. “I know I… haven’t handled this sort of thing well before. With you.”
Whatever else he may be, Bruce Wayne is a Dad Who Tries!!!!!
He was fumbling, words turning to sludge on his lips, gumming up with guilt and regret. It was always like that, for him. It was one of the reasons Bruce preferred the cowl. No one expected heartfelt speeches from a wraith out of Gotham’s darkest nightmares. Kids, though. Kids expected those sorts of things from their parents.
Always my favorite version of Bruce, this uneloquent and painfully aware version. Also, ironically, as best I remember this entire scene was one of the easier things I've written. I just watched it happen and took dictation.
He still had days with each of his children when seeing them at the breakfast counter or curled up in the den surprised him. That’s a living thing, he would think, and it’s mine, and he would be overwhelmed once more.
Literally me with my cats. The bit right before this about the choice crashing over him like a wave and taking him by surprise even years after the fact is a thing that happens to me. I adapt really quickly in the moment to various changes and then get hit with delayed, extended surprise. (But Bruce's literal surprised thoughts are me re: my cats.)
“As sure as I’ve ever been,” Bruce replied, and even he wasn’t sure which meaning he was reaching for.
Ah, duality. It's fun to think about which he might mean and which Dick might assume.
Still, it was a relief to have Alfred greet him at the door as if this were just another ordinary day and Bruce was not standing with his neck bent as a small child tugged on fistfuls of his hair.
What an an adorable art piece this would make. Not that I'm hinting. I just see it so clearly.
She was looking around with sedate interest, calm but alert, a monarch overlooking her domain. Or, Bruce realized with wry amusement, a cat eyeing a new box.
Please also know she's doing that little unbalanced head wiggle babies do when they're old enough to hold their head upright on their own but young enough to not do it well.
Bruce had planned on gathering all his children in the den, explaining as briefly as he could the circumstances of the baby’s arrival, and letting them make each other’s acquaintance. But his day had yet to go to plan, so why start now.
Drily wry Bruce is always so fun to write. He doesn't get to be as overtly funny as his kids, but I enjoy the humor.
It was an uncomfortable maneuver, since he had to bend further, almost double, to ease the tugging on his scalp until he could loose those little hands.
big man little baby BIG MAN LITTLE BABY
“I already have a sister,” he pointed out. Bruce was inclined to describe it as petulantly, but Damian managed to keep his bottom lip sucked in, if only just.
Damian: I claim none of you
Damian, confronted by a girl baby: HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO MY BELOVED SISTER
also he's jus' a babyyyy
Damian recoiled further, and Bruce let Batman fall from his shoulders like a loosened cape.
can't get enough of this crap
Bruce wrapped his arm around Damian’s middle and pulled the boy into his side. Damian turned away so he couldn’t look at the baby, who was gabbling to herself as she gummed on Bruce’s thumb. Bruce rested his jaw against Damian’s temple, both to keep the boy still and to keep his voice low. The Manor was the securest place in Gotham, other than the Cave, but he would not risk this.
Sometimes writing the logistics of physicality is so difficult, but when it works for me, boy does it work.
Bruce let the question settle against his skin like mist before answering the same way he would again and again for years to come. “She is now.” He didn’t know. He suspected Selina truly didn’t either. Whatever the case, it didn’t matter, in the same way it didn’t matter that his blood didn’t course through Dick’s veins, that he wasn’t responsible for Jason’s broad shoulders or Tim’s blue eyes or Cassie’s dark hair or Duke’s dimples. They were his. And now this child was, too.
I think, in canon, she's supposed to be his, maybe. Don't know for sure, don't really care, and I don't think Bruce would either, as stated above.
“You will be her big brother,” Bruce continued softly. “That is a solemn charge that you cannot take lightly. As closest to her in age, she’ll look up to you. As she grows, she’ll mimic you—your words, your actions, your behaviors. Which means you’ll be in a unique position, perhaps more than any of us, to influence the person she becomes. Do you understand?”
10000% shamelessly used this exact tactic on a nibling when they acquired a younger sibling.
That was something new, the idea of being able to name a child himself.
Isn't that fun! I love names and naming things. I'm delighted he gets this opportunity. (More on this in a minute.)
Somehow, choosing a name felt like a larger responsibility than all of his former child-rearing experience put together. My car is called the Batmobile, Bruce thought despairingly as he watched his children watch each other.
Did I mention that I love drily deadpan Bruce? That line still makes me laugh.
“So does she do anything?” Tim asked. He was eyeing the baby in the same way he might a particularly florid insect—with interest, scientific remove, and no small amount of wariness. Cass wrinkled her nose but didn’t comment. “She’s a baby,” Duke pointed out with the typical fond exasperation he had picked up once the shine of the Manor had worn off. “What do you expect her to do?”
I loved trying to figure out how each kid would react and if there were ways they might respond to the new baby that would be surprising but still sensible. I'm not sure if I managed that, but I'm still pleased with how they all ended up, this weird little family of only children.
Bruce’s brain made a sparking noise, like a fork left in the microwave.
BZZT DING DING A DING A BZZT DING
“Uh, yeah? Got back on Monday. Why?” Why, why, why. Why were his children so distrustful, that’s what Bruce wanted to know.
*taps the exhausted dry humor Bruce sign*
Bruce opened his eyes and stared at the baby shrieking inches from his face. Duke stood behind her, his hands clamped under her arms, and stared back impassively as she squealed into the phone.
Bruce has horrible children.
“B, what the—“ Bruce fought the urge to cover the baby’s ears, even though he was the only one who could hear the voice on the other end.
I love this stupid family.
There was an ominous gurgle from the baby. Duke looked at her, then at Bruce, then quickly handed her over. “Not it.”
I have literally watched hundreds of children in my life, related and unrelated. I have changed one (1) diaper, under duress, and immediately and deliberately forgot everything I was taught. J'refuse.
Helena, meaning bright, shining light, Bruce had explained almost bashfully to Selina. Selina, who had left town the same night Helena went home to the Manor but who saw each of Bruce’s texts and left the read receipt on so he would know. Selina, whose name meant moon. So she’ll always know where she came from.
Remember I said later? Later is now. As we were already spitting on canon, I was more than willing to change the kiddo's name if needed, but it turns out DC (I will be charitable and assume purposefully) chose a lovely, symbolic name that matched beautifully in a way that felt like Bruce. So I kept it. So Bruce did get to name a kid, but also not really because comics did it for him.
The legislation that he’d helped champion regarding the treatment of minors in the media hadn’t hurt either.
I think this was around the time there was a flurry of papparazzi nonsense and talk about this IRL with... Jolie kids or Cruise kids or something, I don't remember. Some grown adults being awful and pushy around famously related minors.
With each adoption, the celebrations had gotten smaller but more precious, the attendees a guard set in place, their names like a chant against hardship and a hymn of thankfulness.
I love this line, but I also think it's wrong now. I think the older Bruce gets, the more firmly he cements the relationships he trusts the most, but also the more he meets people deserving of that trust. Loner, low-key terrified Bruce wouldn't have held a gala to celebrate Dick's appearance. He would have gone full feral shields up. Maybe with Jason he would have given half a thought to expectations and appearances, but with a street kid like Jason, he would've wanted that child shielded from the horrible people in his social circle. And so on and so forth. By now he has his friends, but also his kids' friends, their allies both in domino and out.
Bruce vowed it, down in the deepest part of his heart, the core of him that let him lead a team of aliens and demigods, that made a double life possible and dressing as an armored animal a feasible life choice. A life choice he would not let the baby in his arms emulate.
I too sometimes have a deadpan sense of humor. Shocking, I know.
I take that final line not so much as full self-criticism but an acknowledgement that Bruce's children are all driven to the caped life in the same way he was—by trauma and loss and the need to fix Gotham—and all came to him with that drive already installed. With Helena, being separated from Selina is a trauma, even for an infant, but as is stated throughout the fic, Selina will remain fully present and involved as much as she wishes to be. And Bruce will brave hell and high water and even worse to keep this child from experiencing the kinds of trauma that brought his other children to him and into their other life.
She was already a wonder to him, his little moonbeam, a mystery wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a taffeta-heavy party dress with a matching headband.
The bookmark was right. Let this man be a girldad!!!! (I'd briefly considered writing a followup to this, where Cass had to sort complicated emotions about not being the only girl in the house. Never got enough reaction in the early days, though. Something about it or the tags or something attracted a larger than usual contingent of "okay but Bruce is a bad dad" crowd. Bleh.)
He realized he looked like his father, but with airbrushed grey hairs and crow’s feet lines that Thomas Wayne had never had the time to gather. He realized he looked happy.
me @ me: ow????
As stated in the before-cut stats, this ranks decently high in terms of all my fics????? Somehow????????? I can usually get a decent bead on reception just based on how option a fic shows up in my inbox or people reference it on Tumblr or whatever, but this one apparently was a sleeper to only me. Stunned. Bewildered.

Pjo/dc crossovers I'd like to read/draw about:
Percy and Annabeth get isekai'd into dc comics, Annabeth would totally love hanging out with Cyborg and Percy and Flash would so get on
Percy accidentally becomes a manhattan hero and gets invited to join the teen titans
Bruce as a demigod kid at CHB, how does having a godly parent factor in when he just saw his parents get murdered?
Stephanie is a daughter of Hermes and she was on the Titans side
Ethan Nakamura lives and gets brother adopted by Jason Todd
Monsters come knocking in Gotham and the only one effective is Alfred and his Imperial Gold shotgun
Zatanna and Constantine and their bi yearly 'staying on good terms with the god of death and lady of the underworld' meeting. 110% bi energy
Superman vs Sirens
Hawkgirl chilling w Harpies
Jason Todd x Jason Grace x Reyna Avila Ramirez Arellano for kicks and giggles (200k author chose not to use archive warnings rated M)
Wonder Woman and a CHB demigod interacting at the Winter Solstice on Olympus

Have you read the fic "Anton Syndrome"? It's so good I'm a bit upset the author is anonymous and that means I can't read more of their works.
I really enjoy fics where Tim meets any of the members of the family early and they just adopt him and grow quite protective of him, especially if it's Bruce or Jason.
I can see Jason becoming extremely protective of Tim after the ending of the fic. When Jason is enrolled in school once more, he's a bit relieved that Tim's parents were also the type of assholes that made Tim move up two grades. It makes it easier to watch out for his baby brother and Tim may protest as much as he wants that he's big now, he's still Jason's baby bird.
Imagine Jason hating Dick a lot when the three meets the morning after. He can't help but pout at how enamored Tim is with Robin. But it's okay. At the end of the day, Tim always goes to him. It's the reason why he never left even when he accepts that the Waynes are good people and Tim is safe there. Tim will always need him.
Maybe he won't go to Ethiopia to look for his mom. Or maybe he still does and he still dies. But he still comes back to the Manor because his baby bird needs him. Tim became Robin a few months after he died. Clearly he can't protect himself and clearly Bruce can't as well because who does he think he is turning his baby into a child soldier.
i have!!!! it's such a good and heartwrenching fic!!!
for those who haven't it's this fic
jason definitely becomes a very protective figure at the end of that fic, at the very end where they're curled up together you can see that jason has a very firm resolve to keep tim safe. even from the moment they met you can tell that jason developed an attachment to this little kid that he carried for however many miles to get to bruce's door all because tim said that his neighbor was a trusted adult. the fic all takes place from the perspective of tim who doesn't realize just how despicable what was done to him is and its only jason and then eventually bruce and alfred that he's made to realize what happened.
jason would feel both responsible and protective over tim and he'd definitely be slower to trust bruce, alfred, and dick because jason's been screwed over by adults before so he knows better. but now he has tim to worry about and care for- tim who's been betrayed and manipulated by the person who was supposed to care for him above all. so i also think jason would be much more reluctant to trust shiela because even though willis smacked him around and catherine was a drug addict, neither of them had bad touched him like how timmy's dad had and timmy had still loved his dad even after everything.
so jason, i feel, would be both a. even more reluctant to trust adults and b. even MORE protective over tim

totally love the sound of Jason just getting along with his bf family. he totally hits off with them and his usual problems with authority aren't even a factor. Jay is probably pleasantly surprised his bf has a health relationship with them.
It may, sadly, have everything to do with the fact that Jason grew up without loving parents in an abusive orphanage, and when he was adopted by Bruce, there was probably a very transactional feel to the relationship since he was trained as a child soldier.
So to be around kind people who genuinely aren't wanting anything from him is a little jarring at first, and then like a balm for the soul.

🌵🥤🍄!
🌵 ⇢ share the link to a playlist you love
ooh! I have so many playlists for so many moods and people. This one I used to play when opening the boba shop!
🥤 ⇢ recommend an author or fanfic you love
the hardest part about this ask is picking my favorites lol. I pared it down to 2, 1 gen and 1 ship. both are comfort reads, to me!
I’m a big fan of Two Against the World by carolinaa. canon divergent, tiny Tim finds a dog while chasing capes! he ends up adopting it (not even the biggest secret he’s keeping from his parents, haha) and via walkies and trips to the dog park, makes friends with the neighbor kids! things escalate. character dynamics here are top tier, comedy and drama are at a perfect balance
I also like The Completely Normal Adventures of a Crime Alley Kid by Beachfox. Jason Todd/Original Male Character, goes between social media format and more traditional narrative which makes for an easy and engaging read! the socmed works in the series really serve to create some top-tier dramatic irony, the misunderstandings and cathartic reveals got me giggling and kicking my feet. it’s my favorite, most self-indulgent reread
🍄 ⇢ share a head canon for one of your favourite ships or pairings
timkon! timkon til I die. i like the headcanon that tim is a big loser who’s stupid in love with his boyfriend and starts planning wedding decor immediately after they start dating. tim’s not really capable of casual, not when it’s his best friend. like does it look like he can afford to fumble this?? luckily kon is just as intense :) he handled rob’s basement cloning attempts, tim’s level of commitment aint news anymore. if anything it makes kon feel secure! thought of! loved!

My Hc’s for the Batfam & DC Universe
(Warning: These are just my personal hc and there will be character bashing so read the tags and continue at your own risk.)
I want to start this by saying I have not read the comics and though I plan to my opinions and hc now are shaped by the Batman movies and Batfam and DC fanfics.
Bruce is a great mom(personal preference mpreg or not).
Talia is a rapist; if she physically raped Bruce or not that doesn’t change the fact that Damian was conceived without Bruce’s consent(no I don’t care it was retconned) and a bad abusive mother.
Jason does not and will never consider Talia his mother and he would murder her on sight if he ever finds out exactly how Damian was conceived.
Dick is not, has not been and will never be Damian’s dad(his older brother, mentor but not dad).
Jason is a total mama’s boy(Bruce).
^Having said that I also ship JayBru(here is the author that got me shipping them; love how Bruce is a total submissive bottom and Jason is a dominant top in most of these stories<also my hc for them)(and of course nothing happens romance or sex wise until after Jason comes back to Gotham as a adult) and think their soulmates platonically or otherwise.
Tim is a plain peace of white bread(no butter or anything). He is not smarter or a better detective than Bruce. He is a stalker and blackmailer that used Bruce’s grief against him(with Alfred and Dick’s help) and I will never forgive him for it(neither will Jason if he finds out).
Alfred is not a saint or God or a good parent. He’s the type of parent that total messed up raising his own child(Bruce and the daughter he never sees) and over compensates by being a better grandfather. Nothing wrong with being a good grandfather but I’m tired of people acting like Bruce not being the best at emotions is just his own fault. Alfred was the one who insisted on being just a butler to a grieving traumatized kid who need a parent and/or guardian(and people shit on Bruce for not having the courage to offer to adopt Dick) and never forced Bruce to get therapy. And I know you can’t force someone to benefit from therapy but Alfred had access to money to get Bruce the best therapist in the world and Bruce was what 8 or 9, you can’t tell me he wouldn’t have gotten bored or curious and started talking to the therapist eventually. Not to mention backing up Tim in forcing Bruce to make Tim Robin.
Clark and Diana are not Bruce’s best friends.
Harley and Bruce went to Med school together and are best friends and basically siblings.
Stephanie is annoying and useless and quite frankly after Bruce fired her she should have left and never came back.

Light Switch
Tim Drake x Reader
Peanut Butter and Oreos (Part 1) | They’ll be okay (Part 2) | Bobby pin (Part 3) | Ketchup Packets (Part 4) | IV Pole (Part 5) | Red (Part 6) | Light Switch (Part 7)
You sit shoulder to shoulder with the person next to you; the television playing some cheesy romance film in the background, your eyes and pencil tapping back and forth across your unwritten essay, and Tim’s hand resting gently on your thigh drawing small circles.
He had basically ordered you to bed as he dragged you out of the library a short few hours ago; apparently you had been studying far too long alone.
So now, you sit propped on a few dozen pillows with your notebook in your lap, and Tim’s warming presence snug against you. Tim was not lying when he said that you would not leave his side ever again.
And through all of your years as best friends, you finally learned Tim’s love language, or two languages. Physical touch and- Oreos and peanut butter.
You always assumed he only ate the sweet treat because you had liked it. And you would have been partially right. He ate it with you because you had liked it. But also, he loved the snack because it reminded him of everything about you.
The tub of peanut butter and the basket of Oreos lay open on the small TV dinner tray on the bed between your feet.
Relishing in those two deep vulnerable facts about your best friend, now turned boyfriend, your mind drifts away from whatever medicinal narrative you were supposed to be writing.
Tim had rescued you. He- and his family- had flown across the ocean to save you and the others from whatever terrors Abadi, his goons, or even Luthor were planning to commit. Tim’s search to find you had saved countless others, an incomprehensible feat that you’re sure Batman knew but couldn’t quite understand. His family helped Tim to help you.
You would love them- and Tim- for the rest of your life.
In only a few hours after the siege, Batman and local authorities had begun a plan for evacuation. The people originally from America were to be taken by Batman and his flock back to the states. Others, so many others, would receive help to get home. You had so deeply worried how long that might be.
You and the other American prisoners sat in some unknown part of the aircraft, taking note of others’ injuries and helping each other when needed. Batman had handed Gina numerous supplies: clothes, food, medical equipment, anything we might have needed for the long journey home.  You wouldn’t dare tell anyone of the kiss your Russian savior had planted on the masked vigilante’s cheek, nor would you mention the smile on his lips immediately following.
After the plane had taken flight, Tim was the one who continued to periodically check on the passengers. With multiple shifts, he would check on each person, saving you and Gina for last each time. As Red Robin, he would smile at you, ruffle your hair, and lean down to place a kiss to your temple, each and every time he passed.  Gina refused to leave your side the entire ride. She sat stroking your hair and sung you to sleep.
You had all but moved into the manor as soon as you came home.
With your parents gone, everything was left to you. The anxiety and sheer emptiness that followed losing both parents was a fate known well within Tim’s family. Each member stepped forward to help you in any way they possibly could. Even Damian agreed to tolerate Tim if it meant you were happy.
Gina had more or less additionally adopted you in this short amount of time. She promised to step in, to not let the nightmares of what happened to you, to your parents, seep into your body and soul. She promised to be your armor in shining silver and gold. Knight in shining armor, you corrected her this time. She moved entirely into your life just as quickly as she had entered it by agreeing to go on some dumb medical missionary trip.
Tim told you about his three months of personal hell, all that he did and tried to do in order to find you. Jason had wickedly included the burger murder story, of how a stupid ketchup packet was all it took. You told Tim about the bobby pin and communicator from the raft, told him how his genius, computer-like mind saved you in more ways than one. Tim had later told you how Bruce took care of everything in regards to the media for survivor details, the other prisoners, the fortress itself. Everyone from the complex went home within a few days of the release. You slept better than you ever had before that night.
However, Tim never told you what his punishment was for beating Eyepatch to a bloody pulp. The fact he had sat next to you on multiple patrol nights for the past few weeks told you what you didn’t want to ask. It was all behind you now.
You were lucky. Through eaten peanut butter and Oreos, borrowed bobby pins, broken ketchup packets, and thrown IV poles, you made it back to your favorite bird.
Tim flicks a finger to your nose, raising you out of the memory you had gotten lost in.  You crinkle it, baring a tooth or two to signal the twinge of pain.
“Where’d you go?” His head tilts to the side, but he doesn’t look up from his folder.
You continue tapping your pencil to the notepad. “Just thinking.”  You can see the tilt of his mouth as his grin grows before he turns to you.
“Thinking about me?”
You shove his shoulder playfully, as he wraps an arm around your waist to pull you closer to him. He carefully maneuvers your bodies so that you’re sitting between his legs. Your back against his chest, listening to his heartbeat. Yes, this is still real.
You think back to the gaudy woman at the benefit gala before your departure to hell. You hope you can see her again to tell her that you and Tim are in fact together.
Tim places a kiss to your temple. You push away to face him fully. Tim is everything and more that you could dream. The crush you had for years finally happy. Your own personal detective, your best friend, the one to bring light into your life.
He kisses you soft and sweet. The bags under his eyes indicate he might not be sleeping.
You ask him so. “Was the last time your slept weeks ago?”
“Only about a day or so.”
He leans forward, leaving a hairbreadth between your lips as eyes roam your face. His lack of movement moves you to speak.
“Are you going to kiss me again?”
“I’m thinking about it.”
Your mind goes to the computer he maintains as a brain, hoping that he’s already filed away the feeling of your lips on his. “You’re always thinking about something.”
The smile Tim returns is teethy and cocky. “I’ve only ever thought about you.”
And like a light switch bathing your entire existence in glimmering light, his kiss was nothing but blinding.

Calling 2023 the best year would be an understatement.
I took the courage to face this year without any hesitation and I know that deep in my soul, I was wishing to have a good year. Boy! I was right. God didn’t just provide. He gave me memories, He gave me things that I never knew I wanted and needed.
His grace settled my heart in peace this year.
I got to visit Tagaytay-Cavite and Ilocos this 2023. It was awesome! I was reminded that every beautiful things were created via love. His love. To see parts of the Philippines was one gorgeous ride.
I hoped for an out-of-country trip and I was given two!! Got to see Hongkong last March and Japan this November. Imagine?!? Japan was one of my dream country to visit! It all still feels like a dream. To be able to travel and have money to shoulder all the expenses.
Had the chance to watch Hamilton PH too! Despite the difficulties with securing the tickets (Which aren’t cheap, By the way) and the trip going to Solaire, we were able to see the show with the announced cast! (Found out that Rachel Ann Go, David, and Jason didn’t perform for some shows)
I’m also a fur parent now! I adopted a cat and he’s the sweetest (minus the scratching when I bathe him 😋)
And the biggest and the most beautiful thing that I am grateful for? It’s Mike. To love and be loved by him. To have someone you can dream with is a feeling that I don’t want to exchange with anything in this world. I have never been this happy and it’s because of his love, his comfort, his patience, and his care. I entered 2023 praying for someone else to come back and be with me. I remember that I pestered God by constantly praying, “Please. Give that person to me. I want him.” But God replied, “I don’t like the person you’re praying for. Wait for my plans.”
And I did wait.
I changed my prayers to, “Lord, whoever it is that you want for me I accept.” Then He lead me to Mike. He gave me my Michael. He showed the path to get to know my boyfriend.
It’s beautiful, you know? To have someone talk about God the way Michael does. To have someone get so many rejections and heartaches but still able to say, “I don’t know what to do but I trust His plans.” To have someone with a pure heart he’s not even aware he has one. I remember a quote from TATBILB when Lara Jean said that love is scary because the more people that you let into your life, the more that can just walk right out. I used to be like her. Shtless scared to fall in love, to let myself drown with my feelings because I don’t want to give someone the authority to break my heart but now, thinking of it again. I would let Mike break my heart a thousand times for the reason that I know he’s worth it. I love him to bits and I would sacrifice my heart and gain pain as long as his heart gets to be happy.
If you ask my 2022 self if I expected all of this, I would answer, “No.” I never knew I could get to this place. To this state. To this serenity. I am able to breathe now thanks to the blessings that God has given me.
