I adore this recent trend (if that's the right word) of letting an orchestra play classical music on a festival. It's magical to see thousands of festival-goers going absolutely wild on Beethoven. Mosh/circlepits, crowd surfing. It's wonderful to see the orchestra and the audience having the time of their lives.

Ally: Thatch , Teacher of the Heath
A marvellous mage outstanding in their field
Every group of heroes needs a sage to clue them in about their place in the wider campaign world and to set them on the correct path. For those too far from the big cities and their ivory towers, there’s rumours of a strange figure who dwells in a nearby village, a tutor made of sticks and straw who instructs children their letters between farm chores, and has an uncanny ability to predict the seasons. This construct is named Thatch, and they have been blessed with a mind that is seemingly all knowing.
Hooks:
Thatch is first and foremost a teacher, and while they’re happy to dispense fun facts and tidbits of information to anyone who asks, the party may need to ready themselves for some lessons if they want REAL lore. Perhaps the scarecrow will drag them to a disused farmstead and match them with chores they are most unsuited for, questioning them endlessly on their ethos while exhaustion and failure wear them down. Perhaps Thatch will send them on some strange errand, quizzing them when they return about all the choices they made and the perspectives of those involved.
Players Might encounter Thatch at the local county fair, confusing them atfirst for a decoration or costumed attendant. The patchwork teacher was minding a few children for the night but the youngsters seem to have snuck off on them. Tracking the youngsters down gives the party a great excuse to scout out all the fun distractions later in that evening ( or to get the topography when the festivities are ambushed).
Background: Onceupon a time there was a farmgirl who dreamed of being a wizard. She had heard the stories about those great scholars who worked wonders and knew the secret names of all things. She was born with a curiosity about the world that she felt down to her bones, an ache that grew worse every year she attended the same country school that’d been teaching the same old lessons out of the same old books for what must’ve been generations.  Every year her parents, who loved her but had no money to send her off to some academy would buy her a journal for her birthday, a journal she’d fill up with questions in a few months and be forced to write in the margins to save space.
Such an earnest desire for knowledge became a prayer, and that prayer was heard by the goddess Ioun, the knowing mistress, who loves all who wish to learn and sent a spark of divine kindness out into the world to give that farmgirl the teacher she deserved.  That spark took residence in a scarecrow and so Thatch was born, head stuffed with straw and cosmic wisdom , heart overflowing with a teacher’s love and desire to see their student thrive.
Further Adventures:
That first student’s name was Oroteia, and under Thatch’s tutelage she became a great mage, venturing out into the world to find the answers her younger self so craved.  Perhaps they’ll encounter her seeking out some forgotten library, ensconced in some great work of magic, or maybe she’s gone so far that they’ll need to break into her sanctum if they have any hopes of obtaining the aid of a powerful mage.
It has been many years since Thatch stirred to being, many children come and gone, their first student having long grown in to her own power as a mage and capable of finding her own way in the world. Thatch can feel themself unravelling, the blessing of Ioun coming loose from their cobbled frame. Perhaps they will fade into nothing, perhaps they will return to be part of the goddess and share with her all they have learned, perhaps the need will be great and they will burn themselves up saving their students, or lighting the way for the party to accomplish their great quest. Thatch is at peace with this, but Oroteia won’t have it and ever since her last visit years ago has spent all her energy devoted to saving her old teacher, delving into sorts of magic that perhaps she should not.

Beware the Knotweed Empress; her branches all-covering and her roots ever-resilient. Don't agitate her, lest she release her children upon the world.
-------------------------
Made 12th of November 2020
Made as an assignment for college. A "cryptidisation" of the well known invasive Japanese Knotweed; a plant that has formed a risk to the infrastructure and environment of the lowlands.

Black Residents Of Gullah-Geechee Enclave In Georgia Angered After Zoning Changes Pose Threat To Their Community
Tumblr media
This small enclave is home to a majority of Black residents who are members of the Hogg Hummock community, which is also sometimes referred to as Hog Hammock. According to The Cultural Landscape Foundation, “Hog Hammock was one of fifteen African American Saltwater Geechee settlements on Sapelo Island, Georgia.
The Geechee are descendants of enslaved West Africans brought to work on Sea Island plantations along the Atlantic coast.” Sapelo island is located approximately 60 miles south of Savannah, Georgia and is only reachable by boat.
Almost three decades ago, the county adopted the zoning restrictions, “with the stated intent to help Hogg Hummock’s 30 to 50 residents hold on to their land,” the Associated Press reports.
But the McIntosh County’s elected commissioners recently voted 3-2 vote to change the restrictions. Now, Black residents fear that wealthy buyers will be prioritized over them, which could lead to increases in taxes.
Tumblr media
Residents also anticipate this could cause them to be pressured to sell their land, most of which has been in their family for generations.  Atlanta resident Yolanda Grovner originally had a plan where she would ultimately retire on her island native father’s land that he owns in Hogg Hummock, but now she worries this might not be able to happen. Yolanda’s father George Grovner attended the meeting wearing a sticker, which read “Keep Sapelo Geechee,” in defiance of these planned zoning changes.
Tumblr media
“It’s going to be very, very difficult,” said Yolanda, continuing, “I think this is their way of pushing residents off the island.”
In recent years, the population on Hogg Hummock has been shrinking because some families have sold their land to outsiders. David Stevens, Chairman of the Commission, said he’s been a visitor on Sapelo Island since the 1980s, and places the blame for these changes on those who are selling their land.
This could be partly true, as the vote followed new construction builds. The commissioners ruling “raised the maximum size of a home in Hogg Hummock to 3,000 square feet (278 square meters) of total enclosed space. The previous limit was 1,400 square feet (130 square meters) of heated and air-conditioned space,” per the Associated Press.
Stevens stated, “I don’t need anybody to lecture me on the culture of Sapelo Island.” “If you don’t want these outsiders, if you don’t want these new homes being built...don’t sell your land,” Stevens concluded.
But the remaining residents have vowed to keep fighting these ordinance changes, and it’s not a new phenomenon for them to fight with the local government either. In 2012, dozens of residents and landowners were able to successfully appeal property tax increases.
In addition, many have spent years “fighting the county in federal court for basic services such as firefighting equipment and trash collection before county officials settled last year,” writes the Associated Press.
Maurice Bailey is a native of Hogg Hummock whose mother Cornelia Bailey had deep roots to the island. Bailey was a Sapelo Island celebrity, keeping the community’s voice alive with her storytelling before she died in 2017. Maurice said, “We’re still fighting all the time,” adding, “They’re not going to stop. The people moving in don’t respect us as people. They love our food, they love our culture. But they don’t love us.”
Tumblr media
Some legal experts have hinted at due process violations as well as concerns about encroachment under the equal protection clause.
This issue becomes more complicated given the racial demographics of the county. Hogg Hummock is on the National Register of Historic Places, and in order for the Gullah-Geechee community to receive protections “to preserve the community, residents depend on the local government in McIntosh County, where 65% of the 11,100 residents are white,” says the Associated Press.

[Between the lowlands and hell. Clocks chime the hour of the inescapable journey. Distant spirits gather in masses. In this house with numbered doors. If the story can exist without me, do I exist? If the story can exist without me, who created the deities?]

Adventure: Perils of the Resplendent Realm
It seems as something out of a dream, a bucolic landscape riven by great shards of icy-blue crystal, diffusing the sunset into a panoply of unearthly hues. One could almost miss the signs of danger: the farmsteads left to years of overgrowth, the wagons left abandoned by the side of the road, the skeletons impaled on protruding spear shards, all left to moulder after the earth began to break.
Before the magical disaster that forced its inhabitants to flee, the Barony of Benshaw was just like any other, save for the fact that it was governed by a clan of high elves instead of a noble family. With generations that eclipsed the length of most human empires, the House of Ang’Bynshar had ruled the land since the millennia old fall of the elven empire, and were happy to swear fealty to whatever short-lived sovereign laid claim to the continent provided they could be left in peace. That all ended when the ascendant heir to the family,   Yhanryn fucked up some sort of arcane ritual, setting of the violent geological events that left the land riven through with strange crystal formations.
Adventure Hooks:
With the earth unstable beneith their feet hundreds were forced to flee the barony taking refuge in nearby settlements and rebuild their lives from scratch. A generation there is a silent desire to return to Benshaw, if not to reclaim it from arcane disaster than to atleast salvage a few precious menentos from long ago. Perhaps the party had family that was forced to leave a prosperous homestead behind, or are hired to recover the treasures of some mercahnt family forced into ruin. Perhaps if one of them has elven lineage they are distantly related to the Ang’Bynshar, sharing some of the common people’s scorn for the clan’s past recklessness.
The upheaval that wracked the barony was only the first of the dangers set off by Yhanryn’s recklessness. Crystal growths opened up fissures and waiting sinkholes that are still making themselves known decades later, they burst damns and let fields be flooded, and residual energies means straying off the path may set off new violent growth like jagged mines. Worse yet they unleashed a number of rogue crystalline elementals that now wander the land looking for more interesting minerals to devour.
Before he got himself and his minions trapped in crystal, Yhanryn was obsessed with the glories of the fallen eleven empire, a time when his people didn’t need to bow their heads and curry favour with short-lived ingrates, when the proper hierarchies were observed an others knew their place was BENEATH his family. To make his assumptions of superiority literal, Yhanryn intended on using a geode of elemental earth pulled from the world below to lift his family’s lands into the air. The humans would then be politely invited to leave, before they were forced off the edge at spearpoint. Should he be freed ( say as part of a chain reaction while the party raid his family’s castle) he’ll bury his prejudice long enough to convince the party to help him obtain a new geode under the pretense of healing the land.
Should Yhanryn get the party’s aid (or another group of rubes should the heroes turn him down ) his second attempt will go no better than the first, this time ripping a hole in the world straight to the underdark. If the party end up opposing him, they’ll have to battle through his family’s loyalists, both those that were trapped with him and those that have lingered on in the kingdom's noble class.
