3. This movie isn’t even about Sharkboy and Lavagirl or their child, it’s about Pedro Pascal’s daughter

Such cute little merkids, i hope nothing bad happens to them... (The crew is never safe)
I can picture it as a plot straight out of an 80s kid's movie
they all get kidnapped by some evil fisherman with the plan of selling them to an aquarium and getting rich
but then they befriend each other and put together their unique chekov's gun hobbies to escape (Kaius speaks whale, Joy can do flips out of the water, Jericho knows how to use human tools, Benji mimics voices, and Hunter is the fastest swimmer)

Batkids favorite low quality kids movie
Damian: Spy Kids 4–SPECIFICALLY because Tim hates it, even though he agrees that yeah, that’s not how time travel works. In general, he likes good animated movies, especially the Studio Ghibli films, which were introduced to him by Duke, who’s parents were fans.
Duke: Duke has taste, but if he had to choose a low quality kids movie, it’s the Spy Kids Trilogy.
Steph: Speed Racer. She thinks it’s funny how much Damian hates the effects. It’s also led to the Batkids trying new modifications on some of Bruce’s cars. A couple have been effective enough to make it on the Batmobile.
Tim: the Spy Kids Trilogy. I think this should be obvious given he thought it was a good idea to follow Batman and Robin into the streets of Gotham. 100% thought himself a spy kid.
Cass: Sharkboy and Lavagirl. Nobody knows where she first watched it, but she thinks it’s funny how bad it is.
Jason: The lady in the apartment next to his who babysat him used to always turn it to the Disney Channel, so that was his childhood. High School Musical is definitely his favorite, but he’s also fond of Camp Rock. He thinks it’s funny how dramatic they are. “Mom. Don’t.” (Probably because he’s equally dramatic)
Dick: Dick likes all the bad kids’ movies, but his favorite will always be the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers movies. His parents had the DVDs to the first couple seasons of PR.

So I haven't watched Spy Kids for probably 20 years? It came out in 2001, I never saw in theatres, but my stepbrother had it on VHS. I remember watching it several times when my step-mum and father first started dating but never after they moved into a house together, which I think cannot have been any later than 2003. The podcast How Did This Get Made just got me to watch 2004's Sleepover staring Spy Kids' Alex Vega, and it had me going 'man, I should rewatch Spy Kids, a film I used to love—hell I should watch all the Spy Kids movies because I've only ever seen the first and Robert Rodriguez is a director whose work I want to dive into' and since its 2023, with a little bit of effort I can easily do that. (Also, I always thought, based on a vague knowledge of their similar poster design, that Spy Kids 3D and The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl were the same movie, but apparently not! Also, Sharkboy et al. had a 2021 sequel? That was popular? And is getting its own sequel? Will have to investigate.) Thoughts on the opening ten minutes of my Spy Kids rewatch:
Tumblr media
This production logo is so ugly it causes me physical pain. I hate this boy with his Kate Moss arms (Miraculous Ladybug arms, for you youngsters out there), his ugly beanie, and unbearable smirk.
Also, the telecine weave on the production logos is very noticeable, they're bouncing all over the place and it got me idly musing as to when more modern image stabilization techniques simply took that away. Not that we really noticed in 2001 because even with auto-tracking, gate-weave and other playback artifacts were just accepted as a given on your eight hundred pound convex CRT TV with 480 Ps of resolution that output enough radiation to kill grandma with a Jeopardy marathon. Do young people know about VHS tracking, auto or otherwise? Does the above paragraph make any sense to them at all? Do they know the pleasures of laying your hand on a still-warm television screen and having your whole body shiver as the static discharge runs through your unresistant flesh? Kids today with their big pants and their blue-tooth hula-hoops and their fancy PSPs just can't understand.
Tumblr media
The opening shot of the movie is so under-exposed (or, more likely, over-exposed and then over-corrected in post) that Rodiguez's 'written and directed' credit is unreadable. You can see its blur to the right of the red 'FILM' there. It's so bad I thought there was something wrong with my copy so I... uh... found a new copy with a larger file size and it turns out that, nope, it actually just looks like that. Even in fancy 1080p this is just a terrible ærial shot. There's some fantastic shots and cuts in this film so to open with such a stinker is bizarre. Was it bad coverage that day, only one good shot in the can, did somebody fuck-up the film in the lab? I am curious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Carla Gugino is so cute in this movie it's criminal. Not to be a lesbian but oh my god oh my fucking god. 12 year-old me was all about Carmen but adult me just wants 90 straight minutes of Carla Gugino in casualwear wandering around her lovely home smiling coyly. I would buy a BluRay player to own that movie on BluRay. I'd not picked-up that she played the mom on The Haunting of Hill House because she had long styled hair instead of this absolutely flawless textured pixie cut. 10/10, no notes.
Tumblr media
I would like to spend an hour talking about the incredible tilework in that bathroom and nothing but the incredible tilework in that bathroom. I will update you if the film has any further shots of the incredible tilework in that bathroom but I fear it does not. As as an aside, kind of furious that this film was not more influential in the field of home decor. Two decades of effing shiplap and cold grey suburban blandness—what if we'd given up on bloated cookie cutter micro-mcmansion shitboxes and instead gone all-in on brightly coloured Andalusian rough plaster and stonework? What if we all had great tilework in our bathrooms, like the kitchen sink in Howl's Moving Castle?
Tumblr media
You know what I mean, you depraved tile nerds.
Tumblr media
I don't want you to think Antonio Banderas is not also a total smokeshow in this movie. Because boy howdy. He's a goddamn hunk.
Tumblr media
There's a four-second long shot of Banderas flicking this ring box along the coping of the Eiffel Tower balustrade, and all I can think of how hard it was to get to get that box to stay in a straight line, how completely frictionless the box must be (did he shellac it?), and if his marriage prospects would have been ruined had it—in all rational likelihood—gone flying off the railing and smashed into the Champs de Mars.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You know you're in for a rollicking good time when the helicopter perfectly slices-off the stone heads of the two statues, but it's the padre giving the benediction while attack choppers go roaring over head that gives you chills.
Tumblr media
A particular shout-out to this lovely unnamed bridesmaid on the left here who not only takes 'putting a parachute on the bride' in stride but looks gleeful and fabulous doing it. Where's her movie?
Tumblr media
In 2001 we really thought computers were going to be cool and fun instead of machines that sold our personal lives to corporations and gave children crippling anxiety disorders.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Carla Gugino has a track built into the floor so that her vanity-computer chair can slide backwards across the room so she can have face-to-face chats with her husband. From this we learn two things: 1) she does this so often she's automated it for maximum efficiency, and 2) Banderos, in an ordinary desk chair, never attempts (or knows better than to attempt?) the reverse. To be continued?

Why did DR. COFFIN no longer continue publishing fanfics?
DR. COFFIN began publishing his fanfics about Sky High for the first time on Nov 3, 2005, this being "Flight" with Warren Peace as the protagonist since she is, in his own words, his favorite character.
May 18, 2006: It would be the day on which Sky High would publish the series: a synopsis compilation with his writing partner WARRENFIRE.
WARRENFIRE: I publish 84 synopsis. DR. COFFIN: published 78 synopsis.
(Remember that these are in no specific order.)
As it says in the same publication, they decided to only publish 5 stories chosen by the fans since they did not believe they could write them all. From the votes it was decided to change the number to 14 of which were going to be written but only a few arrived and others were deleted since they were published on the WARRENFIRE account which disappeared, leaving only the message below.
Tumblr media
Published: Dec 18, 2006: but moving on to the controversial issue, WARRENFIRE showed a fanaticism for Sky High which is not known how it ended, since if we go to his account we can see that his love for the movie turned to hatred for it, it is not known why, perhaps a fight or a disagreement but as DR. COFFIN in the story "Sky High Christmas Special: Snow Ball Fight" disappeared.
DR. COFFIN, Note:
As many of you know, this idea was a joint effort by myself and Warrenfire to give us all something as close to a Sky High tv series as we're likely to ever get (at least until Paul Hernandez gets the rights back from Disney unless they wake up and realize they're sitting on a million dollar opportunity). It has been fun, and Warrenfire and I have bounced over a hundred ideas (EACH) off of each other to come up with a series. Sadly, things haven't worked out as well as we had hoped. Recent events at home have really screwed up my time to get anything written, resulting in long delays that have frustrated me to no end. Combine this with the fact that Warrenfire has apparently dropped off the face of the earth after deleting all the episodes he "produced" so far, and things don't look so good for this idea to continue. But that depends entirely upon you, the readers. Do you want me to continue this series of stories? There are a lot of good ones in the works (including ones featuring appearances by Disney characters such as Dr. Drakken and Shego, and the gang from "Hercules"), and we have yet to learn the plans of Royal Pain and Barron Battle. Warrenfire e-mailed me the rough drafts for a few of his stories from him, and I'd really like to put those out for you all to read, and there is a great cliff hanger "season finale" coming up as well. While I personally would love to continue doing this, my time is still rather limited, and there are three other projects I need to work on. These include the sequel to "We're Not In Kansas Anymore" (Sky High/Smallville) which takes place a year after the first story with Clark, Layla, Warren and the others in their sophomore year. Due to continued demand, I also want to continue the Sky High/Sharkboy and Lavagirl crossover I did as a couple of little one-shots over a year ago, turn it into a full blown story, and also add the characters from "Zoom: Academy for Super Heroes" (yeah, the movie was a bad Sky High rip-off but the characters have a lot of potential). Finally, I am laying the groundwork to writing a novel. Actually I have ideas for several of them, but I need to settle down on one idea and take it from there.
So there you have it. Please let me know if my continuing to work on the "series" is something you all want to continue to read, or if I should just wrap it up as a "miniseries" and go on to the other projects. I look forward to getting your feedback.

Why was I not aware that there is a semi-sequel to Sharkboy And Lavagirl wherein they're married and have an adorable toddler who is absolutely hilarious and totally OP compared to the rest of her (like 12yo) teammates?!?!?!
Like it doesn't focus on them, is very clearly aimed at a brand new child audience not returning fans, doesn't even mention any of the other characters from the original movie (leaving me with lots of questions regarding if this is another of Max's dream worlds or if its the real world and something just happened that none of them are part of the superhero team or even mentioned) and has a different actor for Sharkboy. But they're happily married, and able to actually touch eachother without someone getting hurt now, and they have a baby and she inherited both of their tempers and mostly takes after her daddy power wise but with the ability to control any liquid (water, liquid metal, and theoretically lava since its liquid rock but that isnt even touched on but I choose to believe she'll grow into it since she's still a baby) and can totally and easily beat up pretty much anything, and they're SO proud of their baby and still so clearly in love with both eachother and the family they've built together. And I love this so much!!!

Learning about the possible Sharkboy and Lavagirl sequel being about Mr.Electrics revenge is making think about how he’d come back. In the interview Robert Rodriguez said he just turned into snow, so I’d love to hear Mr.Electric do this long monologue about the water cycle.
Though I wonder how awkward it would be to fight your daughters dream counter part. If he even knows that.

Spy Kids: Armageddon Netflix Movie Everything We Know
Netflix is collaborating with Robert Rodriguez to reboot the Spy Kids
franchise with Spy Kids: Armageddon Netflix Movie, focusing on a
new spy family. Rodriguez will write, produce, and direct, much like
the first four Spy Kids movies. This follows the success of "We Can
Be Heroes," which is set in the same universe and acts as a sequel to
"The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D." The film was a
massive hit on Netflix, watched by 53 million households in its first
four weeks. The project is a partnership between Netflix, Skydance
Media, and Spyglass Media, with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and
Tumblr media
Don Granger producing for Skydance, and Elizabeth Avellan and
Racer Max also producing. Spyglass' Gary Barber and Peter
Oillataguerre will serve as executive producers. "Spy Kids:
Armageddon" was originally announced in March 2022.

Imagine:
At the end of We Can Be Heroes, Sharkboy, Lavagirl, and all the other superhero parents are freed from the alien prison. Sharkboy runs to go find his wife. It's not long til he spots her flaming pink hair amongst the crowd of heroes and their children.
He runs to her, pushing past everyone else without a care. When she sees him she runs to meet him. The music swells - it's her theme from the first movie, from the moment she was reborn as Light. They embrace and he picks her up and spins her around. Her heat doesn't hurt him anymore. It hasn't in a long time.
Then, a small voice shouts "Mommy! Daddy!" Little Maxine wraps her small arms around Sharkboy's waist, clinging to him. He kneels down and smiles at her, trying to hold back tears. He's been trapped in this place for who knows how long and he notices that she's bigger now. "Look at you, Maxy." He says. She looks a bit older now too. She's seen more, since he last saw her. She's done more. She was already, really becoming someone incredible.
She wraps her arms around his neck and he picks her up, holding her between himself and Lavagirl.
"You saved us, little one," her mom says. She rests her forehead against her daughter's. "Thank you."
