The fire, revisited

I have a crack theory that might not be too cracky.

Previously, I'd thought the fire at Phantomhive Manor was started by either the attackers (and/or John Brown) or by Tanaka (on Vincent's standing orders, in case something like this happened to him).

Well, I'd be surprised if Tanaka somehow managed to do that, considering he'd fallen from that stab wound to the back. Either John Brown or the other attackers on his/the queen's orders is still a good possibility. Particularly since I expect that John and the queen already know by then that Undertaker is a reaper.

But there's another possibility I'd never really talked about before: the reapers who came to collect all those souls. I was thinking of this during discussions about ch209, because this new reaper states there're no additional comments to make about Snake's death, even though he's in a space underground where there are body parts stored, blood transfusion equipment, and a bizarre doll who is actually Snake's killer.

You'd think he'd at least mention the odd circumstances of Snake's death, especially when there's a hunt for Undertaker and his latest bizarre dolls. I don't think this reaper is completely oblivious to what's going on; it seems to me he might be trying to actively cover up what's happening, so he's not including such details in the official documentation. It could be for selfish reasons (to avoid overtime), or it could be based on special orders he's been given.

I say that because for a long time, the reapers weren't talking about Undertaker, and Grelle didn't even know about Undertaker's past as 136649. Othello knows because he was there and he was trained with 136649. But if he's a "fugitive of legend", why aren't reapers like Grelle and Ronald aware of his history? William has been at least somewhat aware of him for a while... but he's in management. The "superiors" are finally getting reapers in collections involved with this ongoing case against Undertaker, and I suspect it's only out of necessity. If they could, they would keep the vast majority of the reapers in the dark about this deserter.

Because they consider him to be that much of a threat to their organization. For quite some time, I've thought he knows something (bad) about the organization itself, and if he spread that knowledge around to the reaper masses, there could be an uprising. We've seen it with the maids turning against Heathfield, Ada and the patients turning against the Aurora Society, and now with the top students against the orphanage. When people realize they are being controlled and harmed for someone else's benefit, they tend to rise up, and I think that's what could happen if enough of the reapers learn whatever Undertaker knows.

The "superiors" finally got serious about it, according to Othello, when they sent him from his lab to the human realm. They seem to have hoped he could make this problem go away by talking to the deserter, destroying him, or capturing him. But once Othello realized it really was him, of all reapers, he knew he couldn't handle the situation on his own... and that he and Grelle wouldn't be enough, either. That's why he sent the dove for backup.

But I think someone else in the reaper organization already knew Undertaker was involved and tried to stop him without properly documenting anything -- they tried to cover up his activities. The night of the attack, one or two reapers were sent to collect souls from the dying, as per usual. While looking through their cinematic records, the reapers saw occasional instances of Undertaker showing up in them, but the most instances would have been in Vincent's records.

Vincent's records would have had extensive chunks of memories involving Undertaker, and the information in those records (things they said to each other) could have been damning somehow. To the organization, at least. What if Undertaker admitted to being Vincent's father? What if he told Vincent secrets he knew about the reaper organization? What if he mentioned the experiments he'd already been conducting on cinematic records and corpses?

Any reaper reviewing such records might think the best thing to do is destroy all this evidence, which might hopefully destroy the information, too. Why would a reaper destroy evidence about the organization's activities, if that information could help spawn a revolution? Too much of a hassle? Doesn't understand the full implications? On someone else's orders? Perhaps the reapers sent to collect these souls were specifically told to burn Vincent's body and the manor, and those reapers did as they were told, regardless of the circumstances. I wonder what happened to any reaper who saw whatever they saw in those cinematic records.... 🤔

Whoever ordered the fire to be started, or whoever decided to start it... they did so to destroy evidence.

As well as to keep Undertaker from collecting Vincent's body and cinematic records. Because whoever this person is, they know Undertaker would have found those things useful. And they didn't want him to have access.

The end result is pretty much the same, except that now I think reapers might have actually done it, instead of attackers/John or Tanaka.

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful For years of development, Imagineers couldn't decide whether their new haunted house attraction should be spooky or silly. This was only brought to light when one brave soul asked "Por que no los dos?" and it became so. Not only does this teach us the value of compromise, it also gives us one of Disney's best experiences. Spine tingling visual illusions, an iconic ghost host, an iconic main tune with Grim Grinning Ghosts and nine hundred and ninety nine happy haunts all ready for a swinging wake. And that's just the Disneyland and WDW variations. Disneyland Paris' Phantom Manor has a wild west backdrop, a grim backstory, and Vincent Price. Disneyland Hong Kong's Mystic Manor doesn't have any departed spirits due to cultural customs but it does have a trackless ride system, a demonic music box, and some spectacular visuals. Regardless of the theme, regardless of the location, regardless of the ghosts, one thing is clear with this Disney Classic: There's always room for one more. Any volunteers?!

2. Spiders

This story is part of a fictober challenge. Click here for more information.

He liked his spot. London was often busy. Too busy for his taste. The city was chock full of residents, and still there was room for plenty of visitors and tourists. They would take in the sights of the capitol, like the Westminster Abbey and the Tower. They would walk along the Thames, looking for the finest bakeries and afternoon tea treasures of the city. And of course, a trip through London wouldn’t be complete without some window shopping. Such was mundane life around the city. But for his shop, located more remotely, people would rarely window shop. It would actually be a bit of a morbid idea to come there without a purpose. If it were up to him, he would rather have no customers at all, but that simply wasn’t possible. People who would visit his shop would often do so with just one goal in mind. Bury their dead in the most respectful way. Today was another day of necessary customers. He would welcome them in a solemn manner. Take their requests. Make measurements for a coffin. Arrange appointments and speeches. The interior of his shop reflected the mood of each conversation. Grave, and severe. Until one of his customers started sneezing. “Bless you,” he said. “Why thank you. It’s quite dusty here.” “Dusty?” Perhaps he didn’t notice because his eyesight was so poor, or because breathing worked differently for him, but he hadn’t noticed his shop becoming this dusty. So today, after the streets became deserted, he got busy with cleaning. He dusted the shelves, removed the stains from the windows outside and swept the floor. He was about to sweep a corner in the back, when he noticed something moving. He crouched down to get a better view with his eyesight. It was a spider’s web, containing two spiders. He was about to get the brush of the broom to remove them, when he saw them huddling together. He shifted so that he was sitting cross-legged on the floor. “You know, we Shinigami are told that all human life is valuable. But I guess that goes for spiders, too.” Of course the spiders couldn’t understand him, but it felt comforting talking to them. “I never thought of it that way before, but serving as a Shinigami made me see it more clearly. Well… Figuratively speaking then hehehe….” The spiders sat there, not understanding his words and unmoving. “You’re a family, aren’t you?” He continued. “I once knew a family. A very nice gentleman and his extraordinary woman…” He felt tears welling up. He blinked them away. “And their children…” He sat there reminiscing for a while. Then, he stood up. “I won’t let you be eradicated in the same brutal way. Let’s take you outside.” He gently scooped the spiders up and walked to the front door. He put his hands down on the porch and watched as the spiders crawled out of his hands onto the pavement. “Ta ta now!” He waved after them. Upon re-entering, he glanced over to the picture frame on his desk. The thick layer of dust hid the faces of the people underneath them, but he had never forgotten their appearances. He dreamt about them at night. And though most of them were wiped out, he thought as he picked up the frame and rubbed his thumb on a spot near the center, there was one still alive and breathing on his own. The youngest. “If you’re not careful, my Earl, you’ll end up just the same. I cannot let that happen.” With that, he put down the frame and walked out of the shop through the back.

Can I request a Mother!Reader x Ciel? Like the reader became a shinigami before the fire consumes her (she has knowledge about demons, angels and grim reapers) so that she can still see and protect her son alongside Sebastian.

.⁠｡⁠*⁠♡ The occult fascinated you when you were younger and although this type of knowledge was highly frowned upon by the society you lived in, you were always the type of person who did what you wanted. You spent hours studying and reading everything you could about demons, their classifications and rankings, their names and positions, you also learned about Shinigami and angels. At that time all of this was just to satisfy your curiosity about the beings on the other side that all humans feared so much.

.⁠｡⁠*⁠♡ During your life you have met many of these beings, some by coincidence, others through rituals or things like that. The occult followed you into adulthood, but you let it all go when you married Vincent. You didn't want supernatural beings to continue to follow and seek you when you intended to build a family with your husband, so no longer did you spend afternoons studying and talking with other occultists, living peacefully for several years until tragedy struck you and your little family.

.⁠｡⁠*⁠♡ The passage of time for you became blurred as your soul was collected by the shinigami and, instead of being laid to rest as is done with all others, someone turned you into a shinigami. You couldn't say who specifically since you had no friends among them nor did you know why anyone would risk their reputation for you but you were grateful for being alive again.

.⁠｡⁠*⁠♡ By all means, your "rebirth" is abnormal and strange and if the other shinigami realize what an anomaly you are then they will hunt you down and eliminate you, so for a while you are left wandering in isolated places, brooding in guilt and grief. You've just lost your entire family and your humanity, that's a lot of information to process at once, however, your world turns upside down again when you discover that your eldest son is alive.

.⁠｡⁠*⁠♡ As any good mother would you return home, a bundle of nerves and anxiety as your fist slams against the door and you find yourself face to face with a supernatural being. You know Sebastian as soon as you see him, your heart pounding inside your chest as you swallow hard. It seems that like you, Ciel ventured into the occult more than he should have. You return home, but everything is so different, so sad and cold, the place where the family photo once stood is now empty - a painful reminder of everything that had happened.

.⁠｡⁠*⁠♡ Ciel's reactions when he sees you are diverse, every quiver of his lips, every erratic breath and the barely contained tears in his eyes, you can see everything. And even if he doesn't immediately hug you in front of his demon pet so as not to show weakness, you hold him in your arms. At least you still have each other. Each other until the contract is finalized, you remember with regret, knowing that there is nothing stopping Sebastian from getting what is owed to him in the end.

.⁠｡⁠*⁠♡ However, you again find yourself with your books. Reading each one almost obsessively to learn how to break a contract or how to kill a demon - if Sebastian knows what you're doing, he hasn't done anything to stop you or told your son yet.

.⁠｡⁠*⁠♡ Whether you find a way to break the contract or not, you and Sebastian fiercely protect Ciel from any and all threats that may come his way. It's tiring having to predict assassination attempts, poisoning or kidnapping, but with the strength and knowledge you now have, everything is easier. Holding your death scythe feels so right in your hands, as if it were custom-made, capable of cutting through almost anything.

.⁠｡⁠*⁠♡ There is still distrust in you about everyone around you, about any imminent danger and on nights when you find yourself tossing from one side to the other in bed, you stand at the door of Ciel's room, listening his breathing heavily and snoring. Hearing him being alive. On these nights it is common for Sebastian to find you and stay by your side, talking, exchanging experiences, although he doesn't really like reapers he seems to tolerate you if only because you are the mother of his contractor.

Just a quick question. Did Vincent and Rachel’s souls get collected and the only reason why they can’t become bizzarre dolls is because they have no body to the host new cinematic records?

Why Vincent and Rachel can't become bizarre dolls

Their souls should have already been collected by active reapers, and that's what technically makes them dead, right?

They can't become bizarre dolls because:

1. Their bodies have been destroyed. Well, we know that's the case with Vincent. We are only assuming the same fate befell Rachel's body, since her body was right next to his when our earl found them.

2. If their bodies were destroyed, so were their cinematic records, which are stored in the brain.

No bodies. No cinematic records. No bizarre dolls.

That's why I theorize that whoever set the fire either knew Undertaker was a reaper or was acting on the instructions of someone who knew. And probably not just that he's a reaper (who can glean information from viewing cinematic records) but a reaper who has been messing around with corpses and cinematic records....

More Twst x Stardew things

The Royal Sword Corporation opened one of their stores in town years ago. Crowley hates it. He hates the manger, Ambrose, who wants him to sell the community center so they can open another Royal Sword Business in town.

Che'nya works at Royal Sword Mart. Neige actually got his big break from Royal Sword. He got cast in a commercial for it, and it did so well that he's the face of a whole ad campaign now. Vil is angry and jealous because he also auditioned for that role and Neige got picked over him.

Vil still acts and models, but it's on a much smaller scale compared to Neige. Like he gets hired a lot to do ads and commercials for businesses in town, and in all the neighboring towns, to the point he's kind of a local celebrity in the area. He keeps visiting the city to audition for theater, but so far nothing. He ideally would like to move to the city to pursue bigger roles, but it's just not in the cards now.

The witch that turns your eggs into void eggs at night is Malleus grandma. He gets embarrassed, and has tried convincing her to get a different hobby, to no avail.

Fellow and Giddel are event characters. They get hired to work at the county fair during the fall, and sometimes stop by on the Night Market. There's a quest where you can befriend them so they can move into town, and Giddel can join the other kids on their lessons.

Leonas family is very well off. After his father passed while Leona was still a minor, Falena took custody of him, and he still lives with Falena and his wife, Asha. The Kingscholars were successful in their careers and had plenty of money. Like the farmer, they wanted a change of pace from city life and bought a nice inn just outside of town. Falena runs the actual business while Asha still works as a lawyer. Leona is taking online courses while working at the inn. Ruggie also works there and often has to keep Leona on track.

Ace is a carpenter, and was like Robin, the first person in town to greet you and show you to Ramshackle Farm. And like Robin, he also called your grandpa's house crusty. He also has beef with your cat, Grim. Everytime he comes by to work on something, they have a stare off.

Jade is still interested in foraging, and often gives helpful tips, like what is in season and where to find it. His favorite gifts are any mushrooms.

The mermaid who does a show at the Night Market is Rielle.

Ortho, Najma, and Cheka are like the Jas and Vincent in town. They're the local kids you always see running around, along with everyone else's little siblings, like Jack's brother and sister.

Since there's more than two kids in town in this au, there is an actual school house in the area. It's right next to or is connected to the library, and Clara is the local teacher. Trein helps her out by doing the history lessons. Clara will give the older kids their lessons in the morning before doing their more independent study time and class work in the afternoon while she teaches the little ones. Trein usually keeps an eye on the older kids while they work in the library. It's hard though, Lucius keeps demanding their attention when they're supposed to be doing homework.

Ramshackle is still haunted. There's ghost all over the property, and they mostly show up at night. But they will sometime show up indoors, like in the house, sheds, and greenhouse.

If you marry Leona, he will nap in the greenhouse.

If you marry Deuce, he will work on his bike outside.

If you marry Vil, his post marriage heart event is him going away to work after taking a bigger role. Kinda like Elliot going on his book tour.

If you marry Cater, he will post about living on a farm. He will absolutely make vlog type videos going "My day in the life of a stay at home farm husband."
