#and dabi mentoring them

I remembered your idea about Grimmjow mentoring Izuku and I have world building/background.
Grimm got to the bnha universe because some idiots were trying to summon a demon to kill some heroes and since there aren't any in universe the magic spell outsourced. The idiots did not survive their stupidity. Grimm is really annoying because he's pretty sure it's going to take at least a year to get home.
Finding and starting to teach Izuku delayed his plans, but not by too much. Grim figures he'll just wait for the kid to die and bring Izuku's soul back with him. Classic Arrancar adoption tactics.
Inko is a little uncomfortable with a demon adopting her son with a plan of making him another demon, but honestly Izuku's just so happy these days that she's cool with it. She does the paperwork to make Grim a distant relative.
People in the bnha universe don't really have reiatsu but they still have souls. Grim just has to teach izuku to reform his soul so it's bleach style instead. He's pretty sure that any of the many mad scientists he knows would tell him it's impossible, but izuka did it anyways so there.
For paperwork they claim that it's a family inherited work that is super finicky and requires a lot of control and often doesn't activate without life or death danger or knowing how to activate it beforehand. Which it is true, using reiatsu for stuff more complicated than "be stronger and hardier," let alone kidou, takes decades of learning. Even if hollow style kidou is easier to learn, it's not by that much. Grim mostly focuses Izuku on learning the basics of combat and maybe sonido.
Izuku ends up good at kicking people in the face like canon, but he also has throwing knives and a tanto to complete the danger gremlin evolution.
He kicks Bakugou in the face and breaks his nose. Their relationship isn't great but it's not as awful as in cannon.
Grimmjow is setting up connections with the villain community one day when he hears about some mysterious, powerful fucker called All For One. He hasn't eaten in a while, and that seems like someone no one will miss so he eats out for the day. The villain underground immediately falls into chaos but that isn't his problem.
Coincidentally, Inko's deadbeat husband finally stopped sending money. (Whether he's AfO or just some asshole who died in the chaos is up to you.) She shrugs and moves on. She saved and invested most money he gave them anyways.
Grim ends up running a dojo. First he just needs space to teach Izuku but I firmly believe that despite his general misanthropic tendencies he actually likes kids, so the whole thing balloons pretty fast. He ends up with this weird teenager who calls himself Dabi as an assistant, since the kid already knew how to fight pretty well.
With an actual support system Dabi ends up significantly less burned and significantly more sane. He works as a vigilante, killing marital and child abusers. He's really uncertain about what to do about Endeavor, because he wants to kill him but the man also scares the shit out of him, and he doesn't want to free his siblings just to put them in the spotlight. Grimmjow is less than zero help, but Inko gives him a big hug and helps him start to set up a legal case if that's what he decides to do. He's like Izuku's weird, obnoxious older cousin.
Speaking of the lov, Kurogiri got out and took Shigaraki with him when AfO died. They end up picking up the rest of the league overtime. All the kids try to convince Kurogiri to reach back out to his friends from when he was Oboro. They might or might not be vigilantes.
What are you talking about, this isn't a fix it fic.
The UA staff are deeply baffled when they meet Izuku's guardians: the sweetest little lady you ever did meet and what Aizawa is pretty sure is an actual, literal demon from hell. In hindsight, though, it makes sense.
Thank you for the idea! Sorry for shoving this thing in your inbox.
Never apologize because this is fantastic.

If anyone in Class 1-A would develop a crush towards Dabi, I feel like it'd be either Kaminari or Tokoyami. Kaminari because he obviously likes them goth and edgy, as seen by his simping over Shinsou and the head over heels behavior he has for Jirou. Meanwhile, Tokoyami has a crush on him because he thinks Dabi is the perfect balance of goth and dark. This man dyed his whole head of brilliant white hair just for the aesthetic. He wears a badass coat and cool as fuck boots. Hell, his pants are stapled.
Thinking about Tokoyami telling all this to his mentor Hawks while they're working at the hero's apartment together, not knowing why the pro looks so fidgety. Hawks' expression looks dead inside when he reached the point of why Dabi's blue eyes are a nice contrast to his fashion choices. Unbeknownst to the smol birb child, the villain he is simping for is very much in the other room, looking every inch like the most sluttiest pin-up model you could think of while draped all over the hero's bed. He definitely would look like the teenager's wet dream, and Hawks wants to bleach his brain for even thinking about it.

Hero vs villain: Jin and Hawks
So, the anime is here, and with it will most likely come the second phase of Hawks Discourse TM, but right now, I am much less interested in anyone's personal opinions on if what Hawks did is right, if twice deserved it, if this would be morally permissable if these characters were somehow real people, etc, and focus on what the NARRATIVE thinks of this fight. And in particular, the visual framing during it.
So, if you hadn't noticed, whatever you yourself think of this situation, the STORY thinks what Hawks did is wrong. Not the characters in the story (Though I must point out, Hawks himself calls Jin a good person even after he killed him and does not think he deserved to die) I mean the story as its own entity with themes and messages.
And the story is not on Hawks' side.
It undercuts Hawks' victory on several accounts. The most important one is giving Toga Jin's blood, effectively undoing Hawks' primary justification for killing him. He wanted to make sure the villains didn't have double, an immensely powerful and dangerous quirk, on their side? Well, too bad, they still do! Congratulations, you played yourself.
But that's the plot, the story's in-universe events making Hawks' actions have more negative effects than positive, thereby painting it as the wrong choice. What I actually want to talk about is framing, specifically the way the fight itself is drawn.
Because this?
Tumblr media
This is not how you draw a hero.
And interestingly, once you look at the Hawks vs twice fight in isolation- especially its first stretch before Dabi bursts in- without the larger context of the story behind it, it is drawn and written like a very classic hero vs villain fight where Hawks is the villain and Twice is the hero.
Let me tell you a story, it's probably one you've heard before.
Our Hero has recently made a new ally.
Tumblr media
Some of their other allies are still wary of this new friend, because of their past loyalties, but our hero is trusting, perhaps too trusting for their own good. And the side this new ally used to belong to treated them badly! Our hero wants them to find happiness here.
Tumblr media
But then one day, there's an ambush. Their home is attacked, their allies and friends are pulled into a battle they're not prepared for, and this happens:
Tumblr media
Their new ally has betrayed them. They never truly changed sides, and were feeding information to the opponent the entire time. They isolated the hero with a false promise, and when they got them alone they immediately put a weapon centimeters from their skin. Our hero hasn't even moved yet, doesn't understand what's going on, but they're already fractions of a second away from death.
The ally, turned villain, is framed in shadows, only their narrowed, almost glowing eyes are visible, as they stare unmoved and unflinching at the hero.
Tumblr media
Our hero tries to plead, still hoping there's another explanation, but the villain doesn't let them speak. They monologue, monotonely, about what a threat the hero is to their side, how they had to be eliminated. They mock them for not figuring out the ruse, for being so trusting. They tell the hero to surrender.
And our Hero?
Tumblr media
Thinks about their friends. About how their caring nature had gotten one of them killed before, and now it has brought them in danger again. They break down in tears. The villain's eyes watch from the darkness, silent and unaffected.
Tumblr media
The villain looms over them, still shrouded in darkness, as the hero thinks back on another friend, a mentor figure. Someone that saved them when they needed it most, someone they went through hell to save in return not so long ago. They think back on what they said about trust, and they lament that they failed.
"Well, thanks" the villain says dismissively.
But then.
Tumblr media
Some of the shadows that envelop the villain's face fade away, they think back on their real moments with camraderie with the hero.
Not even villains are immune to emotions. They don't dislike our hero, they don't necessarily want to hurt them specifically. In fact, why can't the hero join them? They could do so much together. (And this is classic villain monologue stuff, isn't it? Straight from the golden age of american superhero comics mha loves to pay homage to. Join the other side! And it’s always based on a fundamental misunderstanding of the hero that the villain just can’t grasp, which is.. exactly what happens between jin and keigo.)
The next panel pulls away, and the rumbling outside reminds us, the readers, exactly why the hero can't.
Tumblr media
Their friends. Who are still out there, possibly being slaughtered by the villain's side. Friends are everything to our hero, they can't just abandon them. (And this is that misunderstanding. Hawks thinks twic eis the only oen in the league who is capable fo being saved. But you can’t save Jin if you can’t save the league. I won’t get into it here but this is why izuku, shouto, ochako and their respective villains are so important)
Tumblr media
So the hero refuses.
Tumblr media
It’s of note here what exactly our two sides look like going into this battle. One is crying, in pain and betrayal, ready to sacrifice their life if it give their friends a chance at safety.
The other?
Tumblr media
Resigned. Eyes narrowed. Weapons ready to strike. Not showing any emotion on purpose because showing emotion is showing weakness.
And that unevenness, that contrast, persists throughout the fight. Our villains does not move a single inch as they slaughter a dozen clones of their former friend apart. Everything on the page moving, desperate, violent, except for them. They comment on our hero’s skill dryly, not even out of breath.
Tumblr media
Generally as readers we sympathise with effort and like conviction, and repression of emotion is seen as a negative trait. Such an obvious difference in visible effort (No doubt thawks is ACTULLY putting in a lot of work to get his feathers to be so fast and precise, this can’t be easy for him. But it LOOKS easy) also creates an underdog narrative, and we tend to naturally root for the underdog.
And then comes the line that sums up this entire fight:
Tumblr media
“I could never allow mere sentiment to trip me up,
Because ultimately, this is not just a fight between two people. It is a fight between human connection and duty. It is a fight between someone who refuses to hurt the ones they love and someone who will. Who is, in fact, doing so right now. Our hero fights because they refuse to give up on people, our villain fights because they already have.
And if you wanted it to be any more obvious, here are the physical manifestations of all our hero’s friends, being mercilessly sliced apart! How’s that for heavyhanded symbolism? Though, really, if you come to a superhero comic for subtlety, you might as well go to the beach to wash out the sand in your clothes.
Tumblr media
So we’ve been looking at this fight ignoring the context, that the hero in this scenario is not twice. He is the villain of this story, even if he is not the villain of this story within that story.
For this next page, that context will come crashing back in. So I want to ask you to read these lines while mentally erasing the word “villain” and “hero” from your mind.  What do they sound like now?
Tumblr media
“Why do you think I prioritize speed when taking my enemies down? Because it’s the ones who don’t give up that I fear the most.”
In not just superhero comics at large, but the shounen action genre specifically, tenacity, hardheadedness, and never giving up on one’s friends are the classic traits of a protagonist. They’re basically staples of the genre. (Hell, deku, the actual protagonist of this very manga, fits into that mold perfectly) Speaking outright of fearing and hating those who never give up, who have genuine conviction they are willing to die for, is something so classically villainous i’d call it cheesy if it was played straight. That’s cartoon villain shit.
Our hero has no time for this speech either, they start to say “Shut-”
Tumblr media
-”Up.”
They don’t even get to finish their sentence.
The shadows are back. Notably, our hero is all dressed in black, but their face is illuminated. While the villain’s clothes are all drawn in light colours, but their face is hidden in darkness. Some very nice traditional color symbolism here.
And what are our heroes last words as they face their imminent death?
Tumblr media
Their friends, especially the little girl they’ve grown closest too these past months. They know the villain doesn’t care, but it’s more like a need when they tell them that this girl they dismissed is kind, that she took care of them. This girl, that the world can see only a monster in, they have to affirm, even to a person who won’t listen, that she’s good. That she deserves to have someone be willing to die to protect her.
Tumblr media
“I’ll be sure to tell the league that.”
Is it mockery? genuine? Do they even care enough about anyone else in the league to bother to follow through, or is this just a casual dismissal?
It doesn’t matter.
Tumblr media
They don’t have to.
And if this were one of those classic superhero stories, or an early more traditional shounen, then the arrival of this friend would have spelled the end for the villain. This whole fight has been about he power of human connection in the face of cold and uncaring order. And what better way to end it than by having the hero’s friend prove him right? Especially the one who’s been rude and distant this entire time, who was the other one to bring this ally-turned-enemy into their ranks, who’s been constantly denying that their friends are even their friends to begin with? But they came, in this moment, and that’s what matters.
But this is not a classic story. Twice is not our hero. And this friendship does not save the day.
It ends with a high five
Tumblr media
And a stab in the back.
Tumblr media
And a girl’s smile fading.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, no matter what you think of this fight in context,  EVERYTHING on the actual pages of the manga depicting the fight itself is trying to tell you that Hawks is doing the wrong thing. That Twice- regardless of his overall morality- is RIGHT to stand by his friends and not give up on them. Even if those friends are villains. Even if he is also a villain. According to the story, Hawks is wrong, and Twice is right.

Okay but y'know who would've been the perfect character to use as a secondary foil to Dabi in addition to Shouto being the first instead of Bird Bitch?Momo.Their upbringings are significantly different but not entierly-Momo was abused by her parents with adultification and verbally abused by them in a way that's so normalized that she has no clue of either of those things even happened to her,Dabi was abused by Endeavor in the classic way with constant verbal degragation and physical assaults. And they both had the same motivation and justification behind them:They wanted them to be the perfect child.Momo's abusers in the sense of her becoming the ideal proper 'mature' woman,Dabi's abuser in the sense of the most powerful hero. They parallel eachother in a contrasting way and so do their trauma responses by extension and their dynamic has so much untapped potential that i genuinely think it's one of Horikoshi's dropping the ball moment's that he never had them share a bond or at least pointed out their different similarities
It's shown that despite his lack of care for strangers generally,Dabi looks out for his own.He treats Toga like his little sister because she had a rough childhood due to her quirk too and his best friendship with Jin is so tender and strong that it borderlines on romantic and we all saw what he did and said to Hawks for his ableism motivated murder of him and it's not a coincidence that he's even more brotherly to Toga and unhinged after that event specifically. In addition to their shared history of parental abuse,Momo herself also has a bunch of disorders which unlike with Jin were not intentional-Let's be honest,if Horikoshi had made her autistic, adhd, anxiety and ocd intentionally,i don't even wanna think about how horrifically she would've been treated by both other characters and the narrative-but are too intertwined with her story to remove them and still have her be in-character so it's fun and interesting to think of Momo and Dabi having to interact with eachother due to her being a heroine in training and him a villain who's team's main enemies are friends and mentors
Both of them have also not fully escaped the treatment they got growing up-Momo was given a costume that was blatantly meant to sexualize her and gets put in charge of leading her classmates into war as literal child soldiers,Dabi still dosen't get believed as a victim of his father because he's 'too mean' to count as one.I would love to see stories of them slowly accidentally befriending eachother right after the Bakugou rescue arc and Dabi helping Momo see hero society isn't fair or kind to her either and Momo realizing just how often it is that situations like Dabi's happen-Hell,she helped rescue someone who's the same as Endeavor, only on a smaller scale.I don't think she'd instantly go villain nor that Dabi would force her to but the prelude to the war arc has her getting kicked out by her parents for standing up to them and because they found out she's been doing vigilanteism so she joins him because she knows he's right and because he's treated her better than almost every other adult in her life and in turn, she's made him realize that not every hero is thrown into it willingly and are just hurt kids like he used to be and that they're the real ones.'Creati' becomes 'Destruct' but before this all unfolds,we get Shouto and Momo being closer than ever as the series progresses due to the differences in Momo's plot and Dabi's involvement in it pulling Shouto into their orbits and Todomomo goes from a subtle but potent romance to a constant and in your face 'They're soulmates by choice' type of beat in the best and healthiest way possible
Momo gets to be written as a multidimensional teen girl character with no demonization for being an anti-heroine and not be erased as the second real first friend Shouto made in favor of a lifelong bully who told his number one victim to kill himself and Dabi gets to redeem himself by being the good older brother he never got to be as Touya and entering rehibilitation after the war ends because he refuses to die after getting to save Jin from Hawks so they can live out the rest of their lives together.Breaking the cycle of abuse is a much better story than shonen fuckery bullshit disguised as superhero homages when in reality it's disrespecting the history behind and core of comics

To add to my previous post, I think a lot of the current debates raging in the My Hero Academia fandom on whether My Hero Academia has failed because at the end of the story there probably won’t be major changes to the society it takes place in are kind of silly. You see to remove any political message MHA is trying to send out of the equation. I think the big problem with MHA  is much simpler than anyone wants to admit.
The biggest problem is that... it’s boring.
It’s boring the same way Marvel Movies are boring. It’s swapped out what are potentially interesting and layered hero characters, for what are essentially characters with costumes and superhero powers and not much else going on for them. Enji and Hawks are the only heroes that have character flaws, and they are largely stagnant characters, Aizawa is introduced to us as a ruthless pragmatist and trickster mentor and he’s now just a generic “I love all my kids” mentor and the only thing he really has done in a hundred chapters is use his power. I don’t think this is a controversial opinion either, a lot of people didn’t like the deku alone arc, a lot of people think the current war arc is less satisfying to read than the previous one and it’s not well paced and it drags.
You could say the kid heroes are interesting characters with potential for growth, but have you noticed the kid heroes have been consistently sidelined for the adult heroes who are shallower, just because they have stronger more flashy powers. Heck, Enji gets more screentime in the Todoroki family arc than Shoto does and Shoto is supposed to be a main character. I think the hero kids just not getting plot importance they used to get and being sidelined because they’re not as powerful as the adults is not even an MHA exclusive problem, it’s the reason I don’t like the Young Justie Cartoon, it’s a pretty common flaw in adolescent superhero stories. Because why focus on the kids when the adults get all the cool fights against the bigger bads?
I think the reason people sympathize with the villains so much is not because they find them to have better politics, that’s probably a ex-posto facto applied reasoning (though I think that’s part of it). (Also if people are invested in the story in MHA because of the political issues it expressed, and they are disappointed because we’re not focusing on that, that’s a valid response too because Horikoshi is the one who set these ideas up as themes and then failed t follow through). (Or even if someone wants to critcize the way Hori dragged race as a metaphor into the story, they’re free to be displeased with how HOri handled it but also can still be invested in the story as a whole.) I don’t think the villains are sympathetic because they’re societal reformers, I think they’re just interesting because they have severe personality flaws and character arcs. Enji is the same character from the pro-hero work onward, the exact same character, he even does the exact same action his only true action to atone is to just defeat a big bad in AFO the same way he roasted the Noumu alive. You can’t say Shigaraki is the same character he was at the beginning of his arc, nor Himiko Toga, nor Dabi, nor Spinner, not even Twice and he has a tragic arc. Negative character development is still development, a stagnant character is dull a dynamic character is interesting. Maybe everyone is excited that Toga, and Dabi are at extreme low points in their character arcs, because it’s a change, and it’s compelling to see the extreme emotions they represent. Like, there’s so much discourse today on whether or not the League of Villains is a healthy friend group for one another, and like they’re not, they’re codependent and heavily flawed but that’s what makes them interesting dude.
Compare that to Class 1-A which is a much bigger group of kids where they are all unconditionally supportive of each other, and a healthy influence on one another, and because there’s very little conflict in that group bond there’s also little development. The only reason Class 1-A is in fact something people are emotoinally invested in is because of the conflict they had earlier in their arcs, Bakugo and Deku is a long running conflict based on an unhealthy friendship and fixation they have on one another, it takes a long time for Bakugo and Todoroki to interact regularly as friends, Deku had to literally beat up Todoroki to get him to accept help or even admit he needed it, Iida would have straight up killed a man without Todoroki and Deku’s interference, and even early on Uraraka felt inferior and more selfish to her friends, and Iida also drew a line that Deku shouldn’t expect unconditional support and teamwork from Iida during the tournament  because they are compettitors competing for number one.
Conflict creates depth which creates audience engagement.
The Teen Titans are my favorite superhero team ever, and they are a heavily dysfunctional found family. In fact Cyborg even jokes at one point that their life is a soap opera. They are constantly breaking up and getting back together, and sometimes the group’s decision to collectively either neglect or enable someone has a bad influence on their personality (the second return of trigon arc comes about because no one was paying attention to Raven, heck, Raven is kidnapped by a cult and just left there for months because Donna was a poor leader). These character conflicts are also what makes them interesting as a group dynamic, I don’t think you should break the group apart because they’re not healthy, because there’s a better story to be told in them working through their dysfunction into a healthier group bond.
I’ve said this a thousand times but I don’t think the hero kids are bad characters, I don’t even dislike them, I want to see more of them. Literally all I talk about on this blog are the villains, but the only fanfic about MHA I’ve ever written and managed to finish, is about Bakugo, Todoroki, Momo and Uraraka and in particular the great potential I see in those characters to be interesting,
You could write a story where society does not change as a whole, but still circumstances get better for people because the kids are deciding to help people and be kind. Bleach is all about the fact you can’t really change the whole world or save everyone. Ichigo is just trying to protect his hometown and it’s my favorite shonen manga. I also think those stories matter just as much as like revolutionary fiction, because oftentimes people can’t change the world as an individual, and yet the action of helping people still matters, and I think also for a lot of normal people they tend to be paralyzed into not taking any action to help people at all because they believe that it won’t make a difference in the grand scheme of things.
At the most basic level we haven’t even gotten that yet. We used to have it! I really liked the Overhaul arc, and that entire arc isn’t about societal reform, it was about several people striving to save a young girl because heroes are supposed to save people. We are thoroughly in shonen battle manga punch em ups and fisticuffs. And as a shonen battle manga it’s not even that interesting because the fights suck, they’re not well choreographed, we don’t know what’s happening most of the time, they’re incredibly crowded, there’s no tension because the heroes despite supposedly being outnumbered way outpower the bad guys. We are given the promise that might happen in the future, there is set up for the fact that these kids are going to as their final act in the story save the villains and sympathize them but all we’ve gotten between then and now is a whole bunch of fighting. And once again it doesn’t come from a hatred of the kids but a genuine desire to see more of them, I want to see Shoto’s thoughts and feelings about his brother, I want to see Uraraka try to be a rescue hero and grapple with the fact villains are suffering, I want to see Deku think about what saving Shigaraki actually means. What I don’t want to see is new super powers, kids trying out their super moves, or kids helping the adults in fight.
And once again this isn’t to criticize people who enjoy MHA or are still emotoinally invested in it. Like I’m sure I’m going to get replies to this post “Why are you even reading MHA if you’re bored by it?”
Like... because you can engage critically with something even if you’re not entertained by it? There’s more purpose to literature and media then just whether or not ti’s personally enjoyable? I think there’s still a fascinating conversation to be had, in what works in MHA, and what does not work. I like superhero comics, and MHA is a shonen mangaka’s commentary on how they perceive western comics to be.
But yeah, I think the biggest most fundamental failing of MHA right now is that it’s a real snooze fest. As a comic book story, it doesn’t work because the heroes aren’t fun, it doesn’t seem to have much to say about the heroes besides very generic statements of heroes good. Heroes help people. Deku good. Deku saves. Deku punches. Deku wins.
So like can everyone collectively agree to just stop yelling at people who are emotionally invested in the villains, or even want to see them win? And like I think people should be allowed to post salt on their own blogs privately or even try to like comment on why they think certain fandom opinions are wrong, but gosh some of these posts guys they’re just like acting like a vast majority of readers are stupid. PEOPLE AREN”T STUPID! In fact I think most people are actually really good at interpreting stories because we are exposed to stories from a young age, and we think and feel in narrative, it’s just a lot of people don’t have the tools to either analyze stories or express what they find engaging. In fact if you think someone is wrong, or even think they have a vastly different take then you’re own, I think you should ask them why they think that way if you’re really interested in a conversation with them. Heck Thy and I usually agree about a lot of things, but sometimes I’ll make a pretty extreme statement, and they go “Oh, I don’t think that, or that’s wrong.” And then I just walk it back and try to explain my reasoning and then even if they’re not convinced to agree with me we just both move on.
People root for the villains because they’re underdogs. They’re sympathetic and flawed. They are also not stagnant as characters and we spend more time in their head. People aren’t stupid for being emotionally invested in them or reading the story wrong necessarily, so much as MHA has kind of failed to properly establish stakes and tension and make things difficult for the heroes like it should be, that’s just how engagement in a story works. There’s a reason that everyone hates the Yankees, but Cubs fans can stay fans for like a hundred years without a world series victory. I’m not even trying to directly insult anyone, or say that My Hero Academia is bad fiction, or not worth reading, I just wish people would chill a little bit and stop jumping on villain stans for liking the unhealthier or darker aspects of the characters.
Everyone’s like “I love my murderous meow meows covered in blood” and then you actually say the reason you like Shigaraki is because he’s heavily flawed, and at times a vengeful, hateful little shit and suddenly it’s a problem. Spinner’s a codependent enabler, yeah it’s called having a personality with flaws. He wouldn’t even have a character arc if he wasn’t those things, he’d just be a lizard. The thing that is deliberately written by a flaw, called out in the plot, and he gets punished for. God has punished him for his sins. Right now he’s just lying on the floor nearly brain dead. Also sometimes characters don’t have like, big, operatic flaws. Like as murderous and nasty as Dabi is there’s like a catharsis and power in the way he calls out his abusers. Sometimes people are annoying and needy. I feel like more ficitonal characters should be annoying and needy! Sometimes the most interesting characters, are characters you like would hate to be friends with in real life because they’d just be too high maintennance and put-upon.
I mean on top of that there are also stories where characters get worse, and only experience negative character development, and there are people who become engaged in those stories because of the dark turns it takes.
You could say that the fandom downplays the darker aspects of these characters, but like that’s what every fandom does. Heck, don’t Bakugo and Deku have an extremely unhealthy friendship for a long time, that fandom likes to downplay because they want to see them in a much healthier version of their relationship?
It’s also pretty much harmless. Beyond being frustrated with seeing an out of character version of a character being popularized, it doesn’t really harm people in any way that matters, you don’t have to yell at people for being wrong or even go out of your way to correct them. In fact, I think people having extremely different takes from the story that you do should be celebrated more. Isn’t it interesting two people can read the exact same events and interpret them in wildly different ways? Isn’t it weird, that we all have this collective agreed upon version of like “in character” and “Out of character” and yet people tend to either deviate or stay inside that framework. People also, tend to enjoy different aspects of the story. I don’t think the heroes are interesting at all, but if someone is a diehard hero stan and they like the heroes I’m glad they are having a fun time.
Fandom is supposed to be a conversation, and like, you shouldn’t go out of your way to correct the people you’re talking with, because it’s a much more fun conversation to ask why people think the way they do and try to understand that then to just tell them they’re wrong and end the conversation there. The reason I have this blog is not because I think I’m right and other people are wrong, I just like to talk to people about my thoughts on the comic books I’m reading, and then other people ask me why I think the things I do and I try to explain it.
Oh and by the way I’m not talking about people who disagree with me specifically. Like, Class1akids wrote a response to one of my posts. I think they have every right to disagree with me and they were pretty professional about the way they expressed their opinion, I follow them and like their takes because they’re good at stating the reasons behind what they think. I just didn’t interact with it because I was feeling lazy that day and didn’t want to type up a big response. I’m just in general asking people to chill and be nice and have fun.

Fandoms have really worped peoples idea of what punk is.Obviously the misconceptions and straight up lies about us didn't start with them but they were definitely a huge help in spreading them due to media and the lack of comprehension of it therefore.Like i said in the caption of my recent meme that blew up,being punk is not an aesthetic but a subculture and a policitical movement with the requirements to be one of us being fighting against corruption and helping and generally being kind to minorities and if a character is just edgy without doing that, then they don't deserve to be grouped in with us when they haven't earned it
In real life, when someone goes punk,it's almost always because they're a minority and faced so much discrimation and abuse because of it that they decided to do something about it and that's how they made their decision.I'm not gonna give out details because that would be traumadumping but the reason i went from regular pastel to pastel punk is that i'm a biracial afrolatina who was raised by the white side of their family, mentally disabled because of having a bunch of disorders including autism, mspec and aspec and a former tomboy kid turned femme genderfluid and bigender transmasc. That probably gives you an idea of all i've experienced and those experiences are the reason i decided to start going punk, not because i wanted to be 'cool'.Not that that's inherently a bad reason to but it is a rather ignorant one
Like, look at the characters i used in that meme-Hobie Brown,a black teenager who was forced to grow up too fast or he wouldn't survive,Ichigo Kurosaki,an autistic boy who saw his mom die when he was only a child and was never given therapy and resorted to repressing his emotions to cope and had deal with everyone assuming he was a delinquent based off nothing but his hair color so they treated them badly because of it as far back as middle school,Katara,an indigineous girl born during a 100 year long war who saw her mom get murdered when she was only 4 and adultified and parentified for the next 10 years straight afterwards even though she has an older brother,Luz Noceda,a second gen afro-dominican inmigrant who's bi and gender nonconforming AND neurodivergent and had no friends until her series began because of it,Stephanie Brown,a girl who was emotionally and physically abused by her dad and nearly got csa'd by one of said dad's friend's which traumatized her so much she remembered all the details years later and had to take care of her mom who was a drug addict and then had to deal with a man twice her age constantly degrading her for not being his adoptive son yet calling himself her mentor
Percy Jackson,an adhd and autistic person who's abusive stepdad used their insecurities over their intellegence as insult fuel and grew up poor and getting bullied nonstop and with their teachers not only never helping them but AGREEING with their bullies that they were a bad kid and punishing them for nothing and then spending all five books of the original series having to deal with an older man who'd gaslit them into trusting them so he could kill them when they were only 12 AND literally almost every authority figure(the gods)treating them like shit including the one who's their dad that abandoned them at birth and never made up for it,Dabi Todoroki,a physically disabled man who's disabilities were caused by him trying please his dad who'd started abusing his entire family the second he didn't get what he wanted from them and has been having to deal with everyone praising him as just an anti-hero for almost a decade
They're all punks, some intentionally, some not,but the REASON they are is that they have the punk mentality and show it in their actions, not because some of them are edgy and some of them not being edgy dosen't mean they 'don't count as/can't be' punk and that was caused by their experiences as minorities, not anything else and that's not subtext,it's just text. You don't HAVE to be a minority to be punk but the characters i've seen labeled as part of us more often than not are the ones actively hurting the ones who are and that inherently means they can't be because the whole reason punk was created was to be anti-bigotry and protecting and loving opressed people
Someone who dresses in dark colors and alt accesories and goes out of their way to mistreat people who don't deserve it and are already thought of as subhuman by society isn't a punk, they're a bully and an abuser in the making and if they're an adult, then they already are one and no,them being abused dosen't justify any of that because MANY irl actual punks went through and are even still going through it but didn't have the privilige to turn into a tormenter with no consequences over it.And sorry to tell you this but if you think they are or should be instead of getting justice served on them, then you're not punk either

Hello! Just wanted to say that your fanfiction I amazing, and that I can't wait to see what happens next, lol. I actually found a few days ago, while searching for Tokoyami fanfiction, as Tokoyami and Mr. Compress are favorites of mine, lol. It's really amazing to see how much effort, work, and dedication you've put into this amazing piece of writing. It deserves to be published, lol. I adore the beautiful relationship between Tokoyami and Dabi, and my heart longs for the mentor/apprentice relationship to be restored. I just hope Dabi will take him back, lol. I might make some fanart of Tokoyami, with or without Dabi, just cause the idea of him with a red Scarf is so cool! Thank you again!
Ahh, thank you so much!! When I first started this series, I had no idea just how much these relationships between Tokoyami and the villains would develop. It ended up being something special, and I love the way they work together and engage with one another. In truth, the mentor/apprentice relations with him and Dabi were there from the beginning, and its felt like the ultimate slow burn to build on these layers of trust and mutual admiration. I'm really fond of what I've made, and I'm so glad I get to share it with others who would also want to enjoy this kind of content! Making Tokoyami into something of my own has also been great, like by giving him new design elements that have greater significance. Like, giving him the scarf was something I'd been wanting to do for a very long time.
Currently within the story, we're actually pretty close to seeing Mr. Compress again. I have a soft spot for all the old League members, so of course I intend to continue revisiting them at various points in the story.
Thank you so much for taking an interest in Heroes in the Dark! I'm glad you're liking it!

If you don't mind me asking, can I ask your top favorite fics that you've written (feel free how much that you want to list)? Why they're special to you? Is there a specific inspiration when you wrote them?
Thanks if you want to answer....
I'll tell you, all my fics are special to me and most of the time, I find myself having fun writing them. Writing isn't just a hobby, but a way for me to release pent up feelings I have or express an idea that came to me.
To name a couple...
Beware of the Bunnies - It's the first fic I wrote for "if Miruko was Midoriya's mentor". It was fun writing that fic, especially when it's a fic for my two #1 faves. I honestly didn't expect the amount of attention I got for it!
Not Red, Black - I sometimes like branching out from writing warm-hearted, funny fics and this is one of those times. Another AU idea I had, but if Miruko and Midoriya were eldritch-like creatures and related. Unlike its prequel, this one stepped more in horror imagery and I think the direction the fic took.
Forbid a Woman from Being Great - Yes, another Miruko fic and one I actually wrote out of spite. When it comes to this fandom (as with any), is how double standard they can get. With Miruko, I have seem people hate her for being "too aggressive" or "too mean", but praise other characters for those same traits or even give excuses for their behavior. Or with fanservice, the same people who complain about it also thirst over the male characters getting bloody and shirtless. I don't hate characters like Dabi, Shigaraki or Hawks but I can't stomach how their fans act when it comes to Miruko or any other character really. It was actually a Hawks fan that irritated me enough to write this fic as well as get me out of the writing funk I was in.
An Absolute Menace - This is a fun little fic. It's part of a series of Class A and occasionally B partaking in antics. With this one, writing Koda as this troll was new, but fun.
Let's SK8 Over the Rainbow - This is actually a SK8 series that I wrote and it's still one of my favorites. It started off as a headcanon (Reki allowing Koyomi to paint his nails) and then spiraled into a collection of short stories themed around colors and I love colors so much. One of the fics, You're Lime Green Jell-O, I dove into expanding a character that only appeared once in SK8. Her name is Miki and she has green hair and I remember seeing her and going "You, you're getting some personality, a story, etc." Best decision ever. I just loved writing Miki and I think it was the first time I wrote a whole story for a character that only had two lines in canon.
Tu es le Moment Auquel J'appartiens - Another series I adore. I wanted to write some jealous Vanitas since I don't think I had seen a lot of Vanoé fics where he was the jealous one while Noé was more oblivious. Not at the time, I don't know about now since I haven't read a VNC fic in a long time. The title translates to "You are the moment I belong to" which is a line of lyrics from the anime's first ending song that I love so much.
It's the Pink Hair, Isn't It? - Do not get me wrong! I do love the AUs I see where Sukuna and Yuji are brothers, but the idea of this fic came from what if they were identical strangers and not related in the slightest. Even funnier, in the fic, Kenjaku and Suguru are siblings that look like twins, but Kenjaku is older. My favorite scenes probably have to be Kenjaku and Yuji interacting and Sukuna and Yuji meeting. I've also been cooking up a sequel so I can write more of Kenjaku and Suguru being siblings and Yuji's brothers and I do mean all nine older brothers. (I relate to Choso so much.)
Your Heartbeat Is My Comfort - Ever see a beautiful piece of fanart and you want to write a fic about it? That's what happened here. I saw this FushiIta art post here and it was like BAM! I had to write a fic. It was also another I didn't write something comedic, but more somber, bit of tragedy yet comfort in there.
Maybe Someday We'll Meet Again - I'm all for the Teacher Geto AU! However, this fic came from a what if scenario had Suguru and Yuji had met when they were younger and I always how Kenjaku was even aware of Suguru's technique. So I put both ideas together and thus this fic was born. It isn't dark, but little less comedic than others and I tried my hand at focusing on more of Yuji's strangeness and innocence here along with Suguru's character before he became a curse user.
You Are My Special - Again, another time I went for less comedy and fluff and tried with something else. I actually don't know how to categorize this one in terms of genre. SPECIALZ was stuck in my head for a long time and it got when I really started thinking about the lyrics and decided why not try writing something from Kenjaku's POV about Yuji? It may have took forever to write, but I'm glad I did. I actually wanted to write a companion piece of sorts but from Sukuna's POV about Yuji.
The Pink Sky and Cherry Blossoms - I actually just posted this fic and I'm glad I waited to answer this ask because of it. I was rereading the manga and came to Uro's fight with Ryu and Yuta and instantly fell in love with her character and thought about how would it have been like if Uro met my other favorite, Yuji? They have some similarities going on there and it was eye-opening writing those into this fic, especially with Uro's character. I wasn't around when that arc came out, so I didn't know how the fandom acted towards her, but for me, I just felt there's more to her than the surface. She's the Miruko of JJK to me as Yuji is the Izuku. Just as I would love for Miruko and Izuku to be a duo in a big sis-lil bro/mentor-mentee way, I love the same for Uro and Yuji.
The Craving That Paints Your Lips Red - The last fic I wrote for 2023 and a sequel to another fic, I wanted to try my hand at the horror again. But more tame, but still "Oh my gosh". I'm writing a post about it, but I have thoughts about Yuji and Sukuna's relationship and sometimes I have this feeling that Sukuna wants to corrupt Yuji, kind of like shape him to be the next him almost. Not for certain, but it's an idea that kind of struck me. For this fic, I wanted to explore a more horror fic side of Yuji housing the King of Curses. The best part of this fic for me is how I unintentionally stuck with the idea that Yuji keeps getting back up no matter how many times Sukuna tries to break him.
That list got longer than intended, but again, I have a lot of fics I have enjoyed writing! I'm glad to have talked about them and I thank you for asking! 💜

Hope I make it for your open slots, if not then there always next time. So how about Dabi being yandere over a sidekick, Endeavors sidekick to be exact. I can only imagine it being hell for darling wondering Dabi want them and the daddy issues that come with it.
He'd set out to use them just as a way to hurt Endeavor: kidnap them, torture them, kill them while giving Endeavor info to think they're still alive, and then record it all for fun. But the more he stalks them, researches their background, he finds out that despite their skill and fame they actually seem to disagree with Enji on how to handle Villains. They're empathetic, they constantly try to reach out, and even calls Endeavor out on his shit in private (and sometimes in public to a lesser degree).
Now Dabi's thinking differently. Maybe he can hurt Endeavor by using Darling against them; he'll kidnap them, reveal who he is, gain their trust and pity, and convert them to his side. They already doubt Enji, and once they realize they were more right about the system being broken than they ever realized, and that their boss and mentor was pure evil? They'd never go back. And if the #1 Hero's favorite sidekick turned on him as WELL as the son he groomed? It's the final nail in the coffin for his life and image as a paragon of justice.
He'll struggle to take on his dad's protégé, but manage to overpower them with the help of a Nomu or two. Once they're out, he's keeping them in his quarters at the mansion. He told the League about his plan to convert her, but not how he'd be able to do it (he's still hiding his real identity, after all). So now he's got all the resources to keep them confined while he "works" on them.
He would turn up the Pity Point Generator to maximum and tell Darling everything about himself, his past, the pain he goes through every day. And how he knew they would be the only one to understand, to really see Endeavor the way he does. Darling's the only Hero who might be able to save him. 🥺
He'd constantly indulge in affection, even when they're confined or chained up. Hugs, kisses on the cheek, brushing their face and hair, etc. He doesn't normally like being touched, but he hasn't really found anyone he wanted to be touched by either. Not since his mom, but over time her affection and love felt hollow and just a spineless obligation from her. But Darling's different. They're HIS.

stay-at-home husband Hawks dabihawks post war fluff
I know trophy husband Dabi is a popular concept in the fandom, but what about trophy husband Hawks???
After the war he is just DONE, he’s so tired and burnt out, and nobody blames him for taking several big steps back when society are slowly starting to function and heal again.
Dabi, no, Touya, however, doesn’t quite have that luxury (for good reason, Keigo reminds him when he gets too grumpy about it).
The major condition of the house arrest he’s currently serving under Keigo’s roof is that he attends a program All Might is putting together for rehabilitate villains, and in the future hopefully catch at risk youth snd help them avoid the villain route.
This is a lot of work, and Touya surprises himself with enjoying the work, and when he ends up accepting an offer to get a bigger part in the project oing forward, agreeing to be trained to eventually be one of the in house teachers and mentors for the at risk youth, which might even result in his house arrest being shortened over time.
Keigo is so proud of him he could explode.
However, it does give him a lot of time to be around the house by himself.
At first, it made him anxious.
The one thing Keigo had always worked for was suddenly here, not just a possibility, but a fact.
And he had no clue what to do with it.
He spends his days restless, waiting around for something he doesn’t know, the highlight of each day being Touya coming home to him.
So he tries to work with that.
He starts working on making their place feel more like a home, step by step, and slowly it starts to work.
Not only does it make Touya both proud and happy, but it also makes Keigo feel accomplished in a way he’s not used to.
In a personal way.
He starts to document these changes with a new, anonymous social media account, and he starts getting a small, but passionate following.
His next step is trying to conquer the kitchen.
This turns out to be a bit more of a challenge, but after a lot of trial and error, as well as an endless supply of cooking videos online, he starts to see some progress.
Cooking also happens to be one of Touya’s favorite things, so it becomes a perfect bonding activity for the couple during weekends and Touya’s days off.
Then one day Touya mentions how they should paint the bedroom, and Keigo realizes that they can do anything they want in this place.
It’s theirs.
So Keigo starts to plan the home renovation of a lifetime. The new project gets him a whole new levels of followers on his little interior account, and he is having the time of his life.
Touya also finds it highly amusing to come home to Keigo covered in paints, just as excited every single day to show off his progress.
And Touya must admit, Keigo has a knack for this.
But even more so, seeing the spark in his boyfriend’s eye makes Touya’s heart clench with pride and happiness like he’s never felt before.
All is well in their new life, and for once, Keigo finds himself able to enjoy it.
bonus: the tabloids and hero fan accounts have an obsolute field day when Keigo accidentally posts a pic on his interior account where you can see his entire reflection on a shiny surface, and he outs himself as the person behind the account.
masterlist - ao3 - ko-fi - wishlist

Huh, your Black Clover post reminded me of a train of thought I had about Shonen Female Leads? What makes for a good one period and what makes for one that is good in spite of the story around them?
Furthermore what does it mean for them to be "useless" as opposed to just not being the main asskicker of the lead cast? Apologies if this turns into something way too complicated.
Not at all!
So, there are several categories of "Useless" that female characters can fall into. One is the "Actually Useless", where you can cut them out and things don't really change. Examples being Tenten, Ururu, Loly and Menoly, probably some girls in One Piece...yes, Ururu helps with Ichigo's training and stalls Ilfort, but she's mostly just there to provide a sense of scale for the enemies. This is honestly usually what they're for. And it's fine, mostly...there's plenty of useless dudes, too. Jinta isn't exactly more useful than Ururu, save for his cute subplots with Karin. They're really just There, and that's...not usually the issue with the Female Characters we're talking about. You need to be a bigger hitter.
Tumblr media
The more prominent ones are the Winless Ones. They might be important to the plot, but they ain't gonna carry a fight. This becomes MUCH more dangerous to their integrity. Hinata and Sakura kinda fall into this category: they're USEFUL, ridiculously so, and they have Big Moments, but they'll get scorned by a fandom because they're really only there to be the Side Character Woman. Often they'll get a Dedicated Chick Fight (this also happens to villains). Orihime is often viewed similarly: obviously, being a medic is CRUCIAL to Story Progression, having your Dedicated Healer is essential to keep the story going (see also: Bulma in the Namek Arc), but they're rarely going to have their Big Moments like that.
Tumblr media
It's also a very, very sliding scale...but what I generally want for a Successful Female Character in an anime is for her to have the same bloody, tooth-grinding, hard-fought, well-planned victories that we read and watch shonen to see. I want them screaming with fury, mustering up all their energy, pulling out combos, unleashing hidden techniques, and finally persevering. It's fine if they fall short against a big opponent once or twice! Happens to everyone in Shonen! But by the fifth time your Female Lead finds herself fighting an opponent and almost dying before The Hero or the Antihero or the Mentor or The Squad pulls up to save her...sometimes it can get tiring.
Tumblr media
And while shows like MHA did put out a good crop of girls to fight, most of the focus of plotlines and battles tends to fall on Deku, Bakugo, Todoroki, Dabi, Endeavor, and THEN onto Ochako, Momo, and Toga (the Ochako-Toga fights are all pretty good, but again, Chick Fights). JJK did okay with Maki, Nobara, and Mei Mei, but even they kinda pale compared to Gojo, Itadori, Nanami, and such (though she is certainly lively and memorable!!!).
Tumblr media
Black Clover, though? Noelle's right in there with Yuno and Asta. In the recent epsiodes, she kept those shields up, kept saving people, and was fighting the whole darn time alongside Asta the Protagonist. Her powers grow, she fades a little as they do a whole arc focused on Vanessa's growth...Mimosa stays involved...and while the anime's current point hasn't really given Noelle any W's that I can remember, her biggest loss is to an enemy that SCREAMS "I am going to get my power level up, come back, and crush you". And I can't wait for that.
Tumblr media
Also, she lost her WHOLE DARN POWERSET in the movie and still fought through, joined the battle, powered up, and...iirc...netted a W.
Tumblr media
She's still playing third fiddle to Asta and Yuno, but she's more prominent than almost any other female SC I can think of. Short of Erina and Megumi in Food Wars.

Let’s rewind!
Please tell me more about Drift mentoring Touya, they sound like a deeply chaotic but affectionate hero-intern duo. Also does Drift have an agency? Does he take on any other UA students as interns?
Drift does have an agency. His agency is called Titor after a semi famous internet time traveler.
Drifts Agency is rather small but is close knit. They are like a family! It's fully equipped with sleeping quarters and a fully functioning kitchen that Drift makes meals for the staff depending on his shift! Other than Dabi there are two other side kicks on staff. He also has a UA second year interning with him as well as Monoma from class 1-B.
Drift and Dabi have a really close relationship. Dabi often pulls pranks on his boss and co workers, but he also memorizes all their food and drink preferences and will make it for them as an apology, if he goes too far. Drift is very supportive of Touya both as a hero and a person, and is always willing to help him talk through any issues he has or just be someone to talk to.
They are chaotic but in a good way.

Ask Game: (if still open) Owl House/MHA fusion.
We'll try
1- Nejire stumbles into the Boiling Isles however that happened in the show. She's absolutely thrilled by all the cool magic stuff. Miruko, the witch who doesn't really care for all the coven stuff, figures "this'll be fun" even if she can't, you know, actually teach Nejire magic. Eri, the tiny titan that Miruko gets strangely tight lipped about, loves having her there too.
2- Miruko's sister is Ryukyuu. Izuku is later revealed to be the guard/attempt number 279 at cloning the emperor's brother, his mentor is Tomura who is reminded painfully of the last attempt, Toshinori, who was his mentor. Tomura is unaware he's the son of another attempt as well before Kotaro was discovered and killed. Izuku also is the one who rescued Eri and hid her with Miruko.
3- Mirio is an example of someone who was not doing very well at his chosen coven track for a very long time but kept at it because Nighteye kept saying he saw it would happen, and now is very skilled. Uraraka joined a track because that coven has better opportunities to make more money but doesn't love it and it's kinda hoping she'll have a Mirio moment too. Nejire, who's just in every track, is someone she's in awe of.
4- Tenya is very good at his chosen track and loves clear organization, as well as being proud of his older brother Tensei, who's in the emperor's coven. Oh yeah and Tomura is actually hiding under the name "Tenko", with the Iida's. Tenya has no clue that his older brothers are plotting, you know, treason and stuff. Izuku will get through to him.
5- the Todorokis are all wild witches. Dabi is running around setting constant fires and keeping attention off the others. He has no idea this is actually helpful to them, and they intend to keep it that way. Reverse psychology is very effective on him

Bad news is: due to canon Dabi not really having a self-image or fully realized identity and only regarding himself as a tool for his eventual murder-suicide with his dad, I... kinda can't see him pursuing a romantic or sexual relationship for his own good. He's not really interested in his own happiness. I feel like he'd only fuck someone if he could use it to make his father's life worse.
Good news is: you can, in fact, validate most dabi ships by him wanting to fuck them to make his dad's life worse.
Dabihawks: seduce your father's trusted collegue and dedicated fanboy to villainy and smear it in his face. You shatter hero society and get off. No downsides to this.
Shigadabi: you're fucking the most wanted villain in the world. Also related to all might's mentor, basically all might's honorary villain godson at this point. Double "smack dad in the face" points. Post redemption you can obnoxiously call All Might your father in law and he'll actually appreciate it despite him and your boyfriend not being legally related and you and your boyfriend not being legally married.
Dabitwice: not the most wanted man in the world BUT he's still an S-rank villain. Will make clones of you so you don't have to interact with your family if you don't want to AND the clone can dramatically die at the end of the evening and turn into goo to retraumatize your father. Also, unlike the previous two pricks he's actually nice enough that your mom and sister will like him and invite him over for family dinners. He will, somehow, manage to bring Toga. She bites. It'll be great.
These are my main ones but you can keep going with this for rarepairs. Dabispinner, getdabi, dabirumi, whatever you're into. There is no way this ends with endeavor having decent in-laws.

Clever how we're tricked into thinking MHA will proceed the same way as every shounen because it really did begin by using the same troupes. Later it completely shatters them in the same breath.
We were tricked into thinking all might would die back in s3 and we'd have the whole dead mentor narrative with the students avenging him. Running out of power should've ended his role right there but it didn't because his role wasn't just fighting, it was being hope for the future.
We're introduced to Tomura, a man-child. He should've maintained this persona throughout the series but he actually gets mc like character development. He actually learns from his mistakes and the bond between the league only gets stronger.
Everyone always speculated dabi was Touya Todoroki but we thought he had some hidden motives to protect his family. Turns out he's a complete asshole and for a good reason. Anyone who was told their life had no value would realistically not see value in others lives either. He's an absolute suicidal menace but you still can't help but feel bad for him.
Toga was thought to be a yandere character, killing people she "loved" but turns out if only her need for blood is fulfilled she's just a normal highschool girl. It was the stigma that actually created her fake yandere persona and she did genuinely love everyone she claimed to love.
Would also like to add how openly this series talks about abuse and mental health, I think most shounen isn't brave enough to do that. I think it gets alot of hate because it's not a "cool" series with alot of power ups and sadly the animanga community is mostly about that. It lets you see the ugly side of abuse victims that no one wants to see. Yeah we'd much rather see an epic fight.

TItle: Lover of Death
Warning(s): i don’t even know, none I think
Request(s): none
”You’re Aishi?” Tomura raises an eyebrow because the person that enters isn’t anything like what he was expecting? Here’s the thing, Tomura is a villain and he knows that anyone can look like one thing and be another. However, he’d like to point out that he shouldn’t have ever needed to expect that his best operative is a hero kid, and Keigo’s hero kid at that. The kid stays standing, even though there’s an open chair. He nods to it and the kid sits, watching him with vibrant red eyes that remind him of himself at that age, hungry to be seen, hungry to have power.
Keigo’s somewhere nearby and he knows that, because Keigo wouldn’t risk him hurting the kid for his identity even though this is the person that’d been giving him invaluable information in exchange for the protection of 1-A. He doesn’t understand and that’s almost annoying, because he likes to know, to be able to understand so that he cana put his players on the board where he wants them.
He asks the simplest question first, “Why?” The kid gives him a smile or at least what’s he thinks is a smile. “It’s very simple, I know that you are going to win this war, especially with my mentor on your side,” he goes to deny when the kid holds up a hand, “Please don’t demean me by lying Shigaraki-san, I know the relationship between you, my mentor and Dabi-san is less then platonic.” There is no judgement in the teenager’s tone, rather a calm understanding, and an easy acceptance.
“That doesn’t tell me anything.” The kid shrugs, “I want to protect the people that I love, and in order to do that, the commission needs to go down.” They agree on that much at least, “What did the commission do to you?” Their smile this time is so much crueler, is a predator letting you know that they’re going in for that kill and there’s nothing that can be done about it.
“It’s not what they did to me but what they did to my mentor, what they did to my teacher and what they tried to do to me. The commission makes soldiers, yes?” He nods, lets the kid continue on with their rant, “My quirk is powerful enough that there isn’t anything that can really stop me long term anyways. Dark Shadow, when given the circumstance could wipe out a city, a building and even something as politically powerful as the commission can’t stop it.”
Tomura thinks back to the first time that he really met the kid, remembers the absolute violence that they used to fight and nearly kill moonfish. That was when the kid was untrained and young. It’s been nearly a year since then and he has no hesitation in saying that the kid could beat any of them in terms of sheer power.
All of this doesn’t explain why the kid is here, why they’re looking at him with such sure eyes, why there is a packet of papers on his desk, detailing everything that the commission has covered up, including every single one of their practices that are considered illegal.
“Why come to us then?” He asks, for the first time, the kid looks almost hesitant, “because my mentor trusts you, and making a deal with you could protect the people that I love.” It’s so matter of fact, and calm that he wonders how much thought has been put into this before the meeting was even scheduled. “Who do you want to protect?”
Steel strong eyes look at him and he knows without the kid even having to say, “1-A. Several of my classmates and I have realized what’s going on and the most likely outcomes of the war. We are getting ahead of it.” He can’t help asking, “Then why is it you here?” “You an’t hurt me without being hurt. My mentor would kill for me, has killed for me. To him all of the others are at the moment, expendable. I am not, ergo I do the meeting.” It’s-it’s the exact same thing that he would have done. He’s almost impressed. “Lay out your terms and I’ll give you mine.”
The kid opens a binder, sets it on the table. “It’s simple. I want a promise of protect from you. You and your associates will not kill anyone in class 1-A including Aizawa and Mic-senseis’. Anyone else is free game. In exchange and the others that are aware of this meeting will fight and collect information for you.”
It’s not a bad deal, but he does need a few assurances, “I’d like to add a few things.” The kid nods, “I need to know the others that you’re working with, you will stay at the mansion on breaks or weekends,” the kid starts to protest, and he levels them with a glare, “I know you stay with Keigo most of the breaks, and pretty much whenever you can so that won’t be much different, and you tell me honestly why you’re so determined to protect your class.”
“I give the names once we’ve agreed and I will stay when we have long weekends or breaks. As for the reason I’m so determined to protect my class, well it’s rather simple. They accepted me, did not attempt to change or alter me but rather understood and met me where I was at the time. They are my family, and I will not loose them in something as simple as a war.” He can understand that.
“I’ll need to speak with the league, and if they say yes, then you and yours will be welcome as members of my party. Do we have a deal Tokoyami Fumikage?”
“We do Tomura Shigaraki.”
They shake hands, Tokoyami’s claws digging into the soft leather of his gloves.
In a moment, history changes
