my favourite parts from the new LS Dunes interview
like all of it lol but i'm putting it in anways
(01/26/23)
Frank: “It’s like, it truly is a phenomenal time because we’re just all buds. We’re all friends, and so that, I think, is the cornerstone of the band. And I think it’s like Tucker said, it’s infectious. I think when the band is having a good time you can tell. It’s just like when you can tell, like a band is fighting or they’re having a really rough time of it. Sometimes that push and pull and that, not the animosity, but the tension can add to the performance. Right. I’ve never enjoyed that too much. I mean, I’ve enjoyed it like watching a fight is enjoyable, you know what I mean?
But ultimately, I don’t feel like I’m invested in it. Right. So I enjoy a band that likes playing with one another. I enjoy a band that has each other’s backs and I enjoy a band that’s having fun doing what they’re doing. ‘Cause if you’re not having fun up there, what the f*** like, I can’t have fun watching you. You know what I mean? “
-
Frank: “Oh yeah. Dude, when that stuff becomes un-fun or like unexciting, then you need to stop. I mean, like it’s always fun. It’s funny, as we’re talking like the group chat is still going. We were talking earlier that this kind of thing, man, when you have the opportunity to hear a song and fall in love with it and then realize it’s your song. It’s a song that you and your friends made from nothing, that feeling is second only to having kids or to making a human being. Like it’s, you made this wonderful thing that wasn’t here before you. You know what I mean? And you made it from, with your hands from nothing. That feeling of, I guess of bringing beauty into the world is, it’s unmatched. And that’s what keeps us, at least for me, I mean, that’s what keeps me going and doing this kind of thing. Because this is an industry that very rarely loves you back. You know what I mean?
You sacrifice your time, your money, your body, all of it to just put out a record and do this thing and play these shows and people are like, “Alright, what’s next?” You know what I mean? So yeah, you’re only as good as your last release. And so if you’re looking for fame or riches or a pat on the back, you’re in the wrong place. You know what I mean? You have to provide your own level of success and your own barometer for that. You know what I mean? Because very often people will tell you…”
-
“Yeah, man. I mean, music, art, all that stuff. It’s a subjective industry. And very rarely the people that deserve it get the accolades. It’ll go to the prettiest or it goes to the flavor of the month and that’s fine. You know what I mean? Whatever, dude, that’s cool. But people sacrifice quite a lot, and you need to have your head on straight and realize that you do it for you and you do it because you have to. It’s like breathing, you don’t even know why you’re doing it. You don’t even know that you’re doing it, but you have to in order to survive. And that’s what creating is like."
Tucker Rule: “Making it” in this industry is basically just making something you love
[I'D LOVE TO TALK ABOUT BOTH OF YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE ALBUM. FRANK, HOW DID YOU AND TRAVIS GO ABOUT SPLITTING UP GUITAR DUTIES?]
Frank Iero: We didn’t. It was just whoever got there first, kind of set the tone, to be honest. And I thought it was going to be real hard to be honest. I really did think it was going to be more difficult. I thought we were going to have to go in and start editing and kind of taking stuff out and going back and forth. And I didn’t know… I’d never worked with Travis before. And sometimes, when working with another musician that’s been in a writing process and stuff like that, like they get very precious about their parts. But he was unbelievably easy to work with.
I think we come from the same aspect of like, if it’s not right for the song, if it’s not good for the song it doesn’t matter. And that is, I think that’s a really hard lesson to learn. It comes with experience and maturity over time, that not everything you write needs to be in there. We have to service the song. And it wasn’t even a discussion that needed to come up. It was just like, this isn’t working or this is working. I want to exploit what you’re doing here. I want to work with you here. I think what you did in the verses, what the verse should be. I’ll just focus on what the chorus is. And it was like two halves of one brain going. It was crazy.
[I'M STARTING TO SEE THAT WORKING AS A MUSICIAN FULL TIME, YOU MIGHT GET JADED FROM CERTAIN THINGS THAT KIND OF PICK AT YOU OVER THE YEARS, WHEREAS THIS WAS REALLY JUST A FRESH, NO F*S GIVEN, NO HOLDS BARRED PROJECT. AND THAT'S ACTUALLY REALLY HARD TO FIND.]
Frank Iero: It is. It is, man. You know, every project is different. Every situation is different. You can’t allow yourself to get defeated by one and have it ruin the next one. I’ve seen that. I’ve seen that happen. And it’s like in those cartoon where all the life has been sucked out of the entity. You know, you see musicians like that, man. They’re not having any fun. I remember touring early, early on with My Chem. And we got asked to go on tour. I’m not going to say the name of the band, but I’ll tell you later, Tucker.
Tucker Rule: Thanks Frank.
Frank Iero: We got to go on tour with this band that I really, really liked. And I was very excited about it. And we show up and I found out really quickly that this band was over it. Like they were done. And to the point where like, I remember one time, we had come off stage and the guitar player from the headlining band came in and said, “Ah, you guys are so lucky. You guys are done. I got to go up there and play now.” I was like, “Motherf*er, I’ll go up there again.” Like, are you serious? I didn’t get it then. I still don’t get it. I’m old now, too. Probably older than that person was when he said that to me. But I don’t know, man, like I love this stuff so much. And there’s definitely times where you don’t feel like… The last thing you feel like is getting up in front of like a hundred people or a thousand people or whatever and playing a show because you feel sick and you’re tired. You got this going on or something happening back home. But once you get up there and that music starts, a switch flips, man. And it’s like you’re either a lifer or you’re a dickhead.
Tucker Rule: Dude, jumping on that, too, Frank, I mean, I definitely go through that from time to time where I just don’t feel like doing it. You know what I mean? But then I get up there. Note one, that’s what makes you remember. It’s the 23 other hours in the day that I don’t want to do because that’s the only hour that I want to actually do. You know what I mean? It’s funny how you’re just you know, you’re about to put your body through the paces. So you’re kind of like, oh, man, I don’t really feel like doing this. I don’t have the energy. And then all of a sudden you’re on fire. You know what I mean? There’s just nothing like it. There’s nothing like it. And I think that’s what the addiction to what we do is, is that that like your hair stands up even if you’re playing a song that’s 22 years old. You know what I mean? You’re just on fire because it’s like you belong there.
Frank Iero: That’s what you’re meant to do. Yeah.
[TUCKER, THIS ALBUM IS ADMITTEDLY PRETTY HEAVY ON THE DRUMS. WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL FAVORITE MOMENTS AS A DRUMMER ON THIS RECORD AND HOW IS PLAYING IN L.S. DUNES COMPARED TO PLAYING WITH OTHER BANDS OF YOURS?]
Tucker Rule: Oh man, a personal favorite of mine is “Grey Veins.” There’s a pre-chorus that Frank actually wrote and he wrote the drums for it as well. And it turned out to be my favorite thing. And again, taking the ego away from myself, having a guitar player write the drum part was like I was super excited about because it worked. I heard it and it worked. And I was like, okay, I’m going to go in the studio. I’m going to do what you gave me and I’m just going to put my drums on it, my idea on it. And it just worked. And it’s like, I don’t know, I just love that. I always think about that. It’s like when your favorite part of your record is a part that you didn’t write. That means that you love the record and you love the process and you love how it… It’s just very rewarding to have that feeling.
[FRANK, YOU’VE GOT AN ADMIRER.]
Frank Iero: I got to tell you, my favorite part of the record is is the drums on “Past Lives.” If you notice, Tucker never goes to a crash cymbal until the second, like that very last chorus, the second half of it where it opens up. Everything on that song is close hi-hat to open hi-hat. And it’s all like that very straight, like you’re getting this, the meter of it. But then when he opens up and gets syncopated it just explodes. And it’s crazy. The amount of reserve, I guess, or like… Yeah, the ability to hold back until that last chorus of that song. Holy shit, man. It’s like, how do you do that? I don’t have that in me to not eat that last cookie or like, you know what I mean, to not…
Tucker Rule: Totally. It’s trust, man. It’s trust in your dude, just trust to know that you all don’t need me to get heavy. It’s happening. It’s happening around the whole thing. And it’s like, all right, you wanna… Let’s make this thing explode at the end. And I think that the reserve there is trusting the rest of the people in the band. Trusting that everyone’s got it and you can move around the drums. It doesn’t need to be like, “Okay, the crash cymbal means it’s heavy now.” The bass can make it heavy, the vocals can make it heavy. The lyrical content can make it heavy.
Frank Iero: I got to tell you, it took me maybe 10 listens on that song to realize that you weren’t opening up like a normal drummer would. Like you get the chorus. All right I’m gonna crash and then I’m… It’s gonna expand the sound, right? And then where do you go from 11? How do you turn up from 11 to get that last chorus over the hump? This motherf*er like it’s crazy, dude, it’s nuts. It’s nuts. Higher and like those little junkie junks. I don’t know what they’re called, like whatever.
Tucker Rule: Yeah, we had a lot of drum crap.
[LIKEWISE, WHAT ABOUT FRANK FOR GUITAR PARTS? HOW DOES PLAYING IN L.S. DUNES' COMPARE, AND WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR PERSONAL FAVORITE PARTS TO PLAY ON THE RECORD?]
Frank Iero: Oh, man. I think my favorite song to play live would be maybe “It Takes Time.” Just because there’s just so much going on. I mean, this record is pretty riffy. And it really is. You can get lost in that ramen a bit. And I feel like a lesser group of guys would make a pretty shitty record with the amount of noodling happening. But I mean, kudos to Anthony, really, for being able to find a collection of melodies when there’s already so much melody happening. I mean, you have a bass player that is running around that beat. I mean it’s incredible what Tim and Tucker can do. Honestly, I feel like you could probably take all the guitars off the record and you would still be a very interesting, amazing listen if you just listen to bass and drums with Anthony on top. So I’ve always felt like for a good record or my favorite records it’s drums and vocals. The rest is kind of like it’s the cream inside the Oreo like the cookie makes it. It’s like, that is just the icing on top. So I’m going off on a tangent. I apologize. But there’s a lot of different moments on this where I feel like I took maybe some liberties or got myself out of a comfort zone. There’s a tapping part on “Grey Veins” that I never would have attempted if it wasn’t like, Oh, yeah, I’m just gonna hang out and impress my friends kind of thing.
Tucker Rule: That’s my favorite part.
Frank Iero: Thank you. So there’s there’s stuff like that. I think “It Takes Time” is one of the songs that I enjoy playing the most too, because I feel like that was like, when I finally did go in the studios, Tucker came and my friend James Bowman, who’s been teching for me. And we sat down and was like, us and Will, who produced the record. And there was a couple of parts on that song where I was like, “I don’t know if this is gonna work. I listened to the song at the hotel. And and I came up with this part last night, so I want to try it”
And that was one of those songs that was like, I had changed a lot from the demoing. It was also a moment where I had recently broken my wrist in like 10 places, right? So I felt off this ladder, it was f–ed up. And I had to have surgeries. And so I had to postpone my recording from September to December. I had my last surgery in November. So I think I may have still had like stitches and stuff like that. It was one of those things where it was like, “All right, this is a make or break moment. I don’t know if I’m able to play, but this is the only time we can do it. So I got to try.” And so that song in particular was one of those where it was like, “Hey, listen, I don’t know if this is gonna go well, but if I can do this, if I can pull this off, then I know I’ll be able to play and a lot of the anxiety that I’m feeling will be lifted.” So that was a make or break moment for me.
Tucker Rule: I don’t think anybody understands the gravity for real of the fact that like, literally, maybe two weeks before Frank went into record, he didn’t think that he was going to be able to go record, he literally had fresh stitches in and was like, celebrating small victories.
[YOU’VE ENDURED A LOT OF PHYSICAL HARDSHIP IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS, FRANK. CREDIT YOUR PARENTS FOR MAKING YOU DRINK MILK AS A CHILD OR SOMETHING.]
Frank Iero: I’m lactose intolerant. [laughs] It goes back to like Tucker said, like, we come from the East Coast… It’s weird, man. The Jersey mentality is, you don’t boast about yourself. You don’t complain. You put your head down and you do the goddamn work, because nobody cares. Nobody wants to hear it and when that translates into musicianship to it’s like, there’s 1000 bands here. We all want it, so you better be really good. And nobody cares if you’re not feeling good that day. Nobody cares about whatever happened to you, because everybody’s got hard times. So get up there, shut up, and be great.
[ALONG THOSE LINES, YOUR DEBUT SINGLE HAS STUCK WITH ME EVER SINCE I FIRST HEARD IT. YOU GUYS SAY ABOUT HOW MUCH YOU HAD FUN, BUT YOU ALSO MADE SOME DAMN GOOD SONGS. WHY INTRODUCE YOURSELVES WITH “PERMANENT REBELLION”?]
Tucker Rule: As soon as I heard it with vocals on it I was like, “Shit, man, that’s crazy.” And even my wife was like, “Oh, my God, that’s so cool. That should be your first song.” And like, I always joke that my wife is such a huge barometer because she’s very hard on me musically. It’s like, “Ah, what is that?” Like very honest and brutal, straight dagger to the heart. So any bad review that could ever come out, like I don’t even care my wife’s already given it to me. So when she heard it, I was like, “Oh, you like that?” And then like the rest of the band was like, “That’s so sick.” That’s when… It was just, we didn’t really need to talk about it. It makes your hair stand up. It’s crazy.
Frank Iero: Jamia [my wife] hates everything I do. She’s not a fan of any of the music that I make. She’d be like, “Oh, that’s all right.” But like she’s not listening to that stuff. She doesn’t like it. And it keeps you humble, it does.
Tucker Rule: Yeah, they are New Jersey.
[TO ME, SO MUCH OF THIS ALBUM IS ABOUT SURVIVAL AND PERSEVERANCE. “I'M NOT AFRAID TO TRY,” ANTHONY SINGS AT THE VERY TOP OF THE ALBUM. “DON'T WANNA FILL THE SPACE WITH SOMETHING THAT I'M NOT, CHEW ON THE IRON. IF I CAN'T MAKE IT 'TIL 2022 AT LEAST WE'LL SEE HOW LONG I CAN SWIM.” AT FIRST I FOUND THIS LINE REALLY DARK, BUT THE MORE I THOUGHT OF IT, IT ACTUALLY FEELS VERY FULL OF LIGHT AND DETERMINATION.]
Frank Iero: I think it’s one of those things that when you’re at your darkest is when you can find the light. If you’re looking to get out of it. Sometimes it’s very comforting to stay in that darkness. And like when you’re sad, you want to listen to sad songs and stuff like that. Sometimes our depression is comforting. But when you finally had enough or you feel like I can’t do this if I continue on this path, it’s not going to be good and you start to look for the silver lining and things or start to look for a way out. I think that this band was a way out of that darkness and I think a lot of lyrics ended up reflecting that.
Tucker Rule: I had just had my first daughter in the pandemic. She was born in March of 2020. And that was such a bright spot. And all her firsts were such a bright spot in the pandemic, but this band was like really, really also a huge bright spot. So I think that the hopeful sound of the record, I think really is how we lived the record, how we lived making it, how we were excited to wake up and work on these parts, how we were excited to give accolades to one another for just being so excited. And I don’t think there was a day that didn’t go by that we were like, “I can’t believe we’re in this band. I can’t believe I get to do this with you guys.” Like it was truly a really, really bright spot in a dark time. And even in the brightest of times it would have been the brightest spot. I just think that it’s meant to be, it was supposed to be, and it was supposed to happen now. This couldn’t have been made five years ago. This couldn’t have been made three years ago. It had to be now.
[THE LAST THING I'LL SAY ABOUT THE SONGS THEMSELVES, I LOVE A MASSIVE WALL OF SOUND JUST LIKE THE NEXT GUY, BUT I HAVE TO SAY I FELL HEADFIRST FOR THE CLOSER, “SLEEP CULT,” WHICH YOU MENTIONED EARLIER. TO ME THAT WAS THE SONG THAT SORT OF SAID, THIS BAND CAN DO ANYTHING THEY PUT THEIR MINDS TO, ANYTHING THEY WANT, MAKE ANY KIND OF MUSIC THEY WANT. ARE THERE ANY SONGS THAT WE HAVEN'T MENTIONED YET THAT YOU WOULD HOPE THAT LISTENERS REALLY LISTEN TO OR TAKE A DEEPER DIVE INTO IF THEY'RE JUST GETTING TO KNOW L.S. DUNES FOR THE FIRST TIME?]
Frank Iero: What’s funny that you say “Sleep Cult” too, because that’s one of those songs too that I feel like ‘Live’ has even taken on just a different life, ended up creating more of an outro for it. And if one of your questions was like, “Hey, what’s your one regret or thing that you want to go back and change on the record?” It’d be like, I want to record “Sleep Cult” again so that we could get that ending in there. So I think that that though is testament to the band still being a living, breathing entity and evolving and changing and writing together. And so I love that stuff so much. As far as other songs on the record, man, it’s hard to to pick a favorite. I do feel though that “2022” is essential listening. I mean, I think it’s the perfect opener, but even if it didn’t feel like an opener I feel like it should be the first song people hear.
And I don’t mean heavy like breakdown heavy. I mean like it’s a heavy song and what he’s singing about and the way that, I mean, Tucker really started the ball rolling on getting that song to be different from Anthony’s original demo, which was just very delicate, still hauntingly beautiful. I mean, like gorgeous on its own, but it wasn’t a full band song until Tucker came in and started to play that beat behind the opening. And as soon as I heard that I knew… It forced me to do something that I’d never done before the way those chords are changing. And it’s a really special moment. It feels like… Sometimes as a musician you write something and other times it just flows through you. Just like one of those, like, I don’t know, like divine inspiration kind of things is kind of silly, but like, I truly believe that in order to be an artist you have to be in tune with the universe and allow things to kind of flow through you. And that was one of those moments where I heard the drum beat and I just started to play.
And the funny thing about that song as well is that’s the first time I played the song all the way through. That is what’s on the record. That song was recorded in my basement here in this chair, actually. So, yeah. Did I answer the question? What was the question?

An interview with Jean-Jacques Brunel of The Strangers and Magenta Devine, Punk in London (1977) dir. Wolfgang Büld
TRANSCRIPT:
“I think Punk now is a joke, actually. I don’t think it bears any resemblance to what it started out as, and I don’t think it’s fulfilled very many of its original aims — in England anyway. I mean, it’s been turned into a commercial carnival so quickly that the people who started it and the people who put the original ideas have lost control of what they’re doing. Record companies and the music business in general, and the media have cashed in on it so quickly, and they’ve taken everything out of it. they’ve taken the creativity, the ideas, the imagination out of it and they’ve put nothing back except money, and that has actually killed it. I mean, I think the people who were responsible for making punk rock what it is, or making punk rock, never envisaged what has happened now.“
“They’ve lost out, basically. I mean, they started the whole thing. It was their ideas and they’ve really lost out all the benefits of it.”
“The people who put it together — like Andrew Czezowski from the Roxy Club, people like that — they’ve been forced out by bigger concerns, by big companies (record companies). They’ve ended up with no money; nothing. And Punk has been taken out as just another commodity to sell. So, in a way, it hasn’t achieved any of its ideas. The original idea was to get away from the old music — selling a product.”
“The original thing for punk was that the kids could identify with it. They could talk, they could go up and talk to the bands, the bands would go to the same places they would. You know, they could just see the bands all over the place; they weren’t stars. But, unfortunately, it’s very difficult because bands have got to get record company contracts, right? I mean, to be able to survive. it’s very difficult to see how they could have combined the two, you know? keeping it on the level with the kids and having the money.”
“There’s no way punk could have stayed as it was. Punk would have had to evolve and become a big business. It’s just unfortunate that it became a big business so quickly. And a lot of people approved that once they're successful — they’re just as rich and they’re just as into being capitalists and they’re just as into making money — and forget the people who put them there, as was the old generation of... the old farts or whatever. So the New Wave has quickly become exactly like the Old Wave.”
“...In most cases. And unfortunately the punk followers have gotten into the same thing as the old hippies (the old farts). As [Johnny] Rotten says, you know, they only accept their own kind. They’re not tolerant to other people, which is what they should be. I mean, the whole thing about anarchy was that, [Johnny] Rotten will say personal [that] Anarchy… You don’t interfere with anybody else’s business, you keep to what you want to do, and that’s how you should go. And unfortunately, it hasn’t turned out like that. He’s the only person that’s kept doing it.”
“The whole thing about Punk Rock was that it didn’t matter whether you were black; it didn’t matter whether you were white; it didn’t matter what your hair was, what you looked like, whether you were ugly, rich, poor or pretty. But already, there’s a snobbery within Punk where you gotta have short hair; you gotta have tight trousers; you gotta have plastic clothes, and whatever. And already, they’re as bad as the people with long hair who said that you couldn’t be fashionable if you had short hair, and this sort of thing. So it’s a shame that Punk has... it’s not achieved any of its original aims, in a nutshell. And that’s it: The Cynic's View of Punk Rock. What next?”
“Yeah, what next?”

this was supposed to be me briefly going over context for another post i made but i had to keep explaining more and more things for it to make sense and it became this whole essay and i wasn't gonna post it since it's not really necessary but. wellll if sam insists......
so in my state foreign lang classes aren't a requirement to graduate but it's recommended bc it looks better on college apps plus some of the bigger colleges require like 2 or 3 years of it (or otherwise proof that you're fluent in something besides english) and my goal is to get into a bigger prestigious college to use that as an excuse to Leave. anyways i took french 1 last year and it wasn't bad the teacher was one of my favorites ever and it wasn't particularly hard to me it's just french itself is kind of ass. no offense beyond the basic amount. anyways i don't really want to take french again if i don't have to but then i learned about the seal of biliteracy which is like. well i'm not sure about how graduation works for other states and countries but my state has a certain amount of credits for certain areas you have to get, a certain baseline score you have to earn for these two tests, and then as of fairly recently you also have to earn two seals. and the seals are basically like if you fulfill certain requirements they'll give you this badge thing that's on your diploma and is on your high school transcript for example if i take band for all four years of high school i'll get the fine arts seal or if i get on the honor roll all 4 years i'll get the honors seal. anyways the seal of biliteracy is one of the harder ones to get they said less then 10 people from our school graduate w it every year but basically you have to take an approved test in a language that shows you can speak it fluently and they'll give it to you. and the kids who get it do it by taking 4 or 5 years of french or spanish (the only languages they have classes for at my school) and then scoring high enough on the ap exam for it. but i did my own research and obviously there isn't a lot of foreign lang ap tests but there is another approved test called the aappl which covers a lot more languages including korean. so the idea is that if i take the korean aappl i'll earn the seal of biliteracy which would look better on my transcript than if i were to take a couple years of french, plus it'll be less work for me since i already mostly know korean and i can fill up the periods that would've been used for french with electives i actually want to take. anyways i was a bit nervous about the idea of taking the test because i'm not super confident in my korean so i asked my dad to get textbooks. but we looked at the demo korean test they put out and it's like. not bad at all. i could figure out the reading and listening portions without too much trouble and the demo isn't graded but my dad said i did it right. the writing and speaking portions kinda scared me though. my dad says if i just take the time to read all the korean picture books we have around the house and watch more kdramas i'll just naturally become more comfortable with everything. i don't know if that's true... i tried to insist i would need more formal learning instruction stuff for grammar and w/e but my dad said my grammar is pretty much as good as any other native speaker's. i don't believe him. he did admit that i needed more practice with writing and talking more formally because i've only ever in the most casual level with my parents. and they're probably gonna test more formal speech bc the whole goal of fluency isn't to get to native level but just enough so that you could use the language practically in like professional settings. but he just told me to watch some kdramas and read the kids books we have and i would get better at it naturally. i'm a bit skeptical about that so i got him to order textbooks anyway. i'm having fun reading these picture books though i remember being read a lot of these as a kid.

The Moral of the Story: Political Allegory in Film Across the Years
Despite the years, despite all technological and cultural changes, despite everything, there are many similarities between the movies of the past and the movies of today. Of course, nothing is identical, but there’s a clear connection between certain films despite some being made nearly 80 years apart. Because of the technological and technique changes and adaptations, the clearest way to see this is when you look at the content of certain films. In particular, the fact that films have been used as political commentary and allegory is something that has not changed in nearly 100 years. By examining films of the past and films of today, we can see the parallels between them and see what remains.
Take 1944’s “Lifeboat” as a prime example. Made during and set in WWII, the film places eight British and American passengers and workers of a ship that has just been sunk by a German U-Boat in one small lifeboat. When the German captain of the U-Boat is pulled on board, the characters must decide if they should go with their humanity and trust the Nazi, or if the characters should follow their morals and political ideals and not trust him. The film seems to portray the German as a sympathetic character at first, with him earning the trust of the boat after helping them out at a few different turns. However, as the film continues, we see how wrong it was for the crew to trust him. He hides the fact that he can speak English, hides his compass and points them in the wrong direction, and eventually even throws one person overboard for being Jewish. After this is discovered by the rest of the boat, they all forget their original hesitations, band together, and push him overboard.
The fact that this man is completely untrustworthy sends a very strong message about the types of people that operated under Adolf Hitler. It says that even though these Germans are human beings like the rest of us, you can never ever trust a Nazi on a basic level. Alfred Hitchcock does this by skillfully implementing various themes and moments on top of one another, leaving even the audience conflicted for much of the film as to what should be done with the U-Boat captain. Brent Wood discusses “Lifeboat” and Hitchcock’s other war films when he says “Skillfully crafted and engaging, [Hitchock’s war films] present the filmmaker’s talent in its prime… with intricately layered plots that generate, at times, a cynical tone of noirish intensity. With every subsequent viewing, each film yields some previously unnoticed component woven into the fabric of the story.” However, despite the complexity of the film, when an audience member walks out of the theater, there’s a very simple message they’re left with. “Don’t trust Nazis.”
Tumblr media
Another example of a political allegory film from the past is 1951’s “The Thing From Another World.” Made during and potentially set in the Cold War, the film follows an Air Force crew as they discover an alien spaceship crash. When the titular alien is released from his encasing of ice and starts attacking people, the crew has to band together to defeat it. However, the film isn’t as simple as it may sound. It features complex characters with conflicting moral compasses, each with their own understandable viewpoint and reasonings. The Captain wants to kill the alien to protect his crew, no matter what his higher-ups may say about protecting the alien to try and study it. The scientist wants to keep the alien alive in order to not only figure out how it works, but to try and reason with it so that no further harm comes to anyone.
This is where the political allegory comes in. The “other” of the titular alien has been believed to be an allegory for Communism. This is due to not only the time period the film came out, but also various elements of the plot, such as the alien’s ability to “repopulate” using seeds, quickly and efficiently (emulating the fear of Communism spreading across the globe), how the alien is emotionless, and altogether, despite it looking similar to humans, being completely divergent from them. This means that the ones fighting against the alien are a depiction of McCarthyism, while the ones who want to protect it are Communist sympathizers. But in the end, it’s the scientist who tries to reason with the alien who ends up being proven wrong, as they can’t change the creature’s nature and he ends up getting hurt. Monster movies are a great way to show these political allegories, with a similar film, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, showing “‘how easy it is for people to be taken over and to lose their souls if they are not alert and determined . . . to be free…[lending] itself to both right-wing and left-wing readings—either a drama of communist subversion or a parable of suburban conformity.”
Fast forward to today, and this phenomenon is increasingly more common. As was written in Hollywood Quarterly, “Topics relating to the war were much more broadly defined by the late President Roosevelt...Emphasizing the necessity for increased public information and understanding about the war, he outlined six aspects…: the Issues of the War; the Nature of the Enemy; the United Nations and Peoples; Work and Production; the Home Front; and the Fighting Forces.” So, after this time, we see more of these films. Take 2022’s “The Banshees of Inisherin.” This film is set during the Irish Civil War, and serves as a pretty explicit metaphor for it. The plot centers around two best friends who have seemingly started hating one another for no reason, which mirrors the fact that during the Irish Civil War, people who were once friends and close neighbors turned on each other at the drop of a hat. The film escalates from simple verbal arguments to the main character trying to burn down his ex-friend’s house with him inside. The Irish Civil War didn’t end because of a surrender, but rather a ceasefire, which feels very similar to the end of “Banshees” and the final nail in the coffin of Pádraic and Colm’s relationship.
Tumblr media
Another example of this is 2009’s “Avatar.” Set in the fictional world of Pandora, the conflict between the Na’vi and the humans is pretty plainly an allegory for colonialism and imperialism. James Cameron himself has discussed this, saying that the humans act as “the military aggressors from Europe” and “the native Americans are the Na’vi.” With the Na’vi being clearly set as the protagonists, and the vast majority of the humans as the antagonists, the film speaks out against imperialism and sympathizes with natives everywhere.
In the end, we can see that movies have been moving more and more towards trying to communicate a specific message or moral to the audience in the modern day. However, while rarer, this technique has been around since the beginning of filmmaking. Even as the political allegories have shifted with the times, typically being representative of the most current conflict of when the movie was made, the fact is that filmmakers have always wanted their audience to leave the theater with a message in mind. And if that message speaks to themes that are more global, the more impact that the film could potentially have.

ISLAM 101: Muslim Culture and Character: Morals And Manners: Part 9
JEALOUSY AND RIVALRY AMONG SIBLINGS
Quarreling among siblings may often be a result of their ages or stages of development. For example, the endless “why?” questions of a three-year-old may be intolerable for a ten-year-old sister or brother. Or, a small child who likes to sit quietly and play with their toys alone may naturally express annoyance when confronted by a headstrong adolescent sibling.
Another basic cause of contention is rivalry and jealousy among siblings. After all, jealousy has been a human condition since the beginning of time. Some people are mature and fully grown, but still, retain anger and resentment against those close to them. Since they have not been able to get over their childhood jealousy, feelings of resentment and envy have grown and changed shape; these could even be a threat to the community.
Sibling rivalry arises from a desire to compete for the affection of the parents. If one child is shown a great deal of affection from the parents, the other children will be jealous. But children do not demonstrate feelings of jealousy in a direct manner. A jealous child may feign affection toward their sibling. Such a child will often be inclined to try to hurt the brother or sister when no one else is around.
In the famous story in the Qur’an about Joseph, Joseph’s brothers tried to harm him, spurred on by jealousy. The Qur’an says, “Assuredly, in (this account of) Joseph and his brothers there are many signs (messages) for seekers of truth” (Yusuf 12:7).
As is well known, Prophet Jacob fathered twelve sons. However, Jacob discerned great potential in Joseph and therefore he paid greater attention to Joseph. Because this was obvious, the other brothers’ jealousy grew against Joseph. One night Joseph had a dream. When he woke he said to his father, “O my father! I saw in a dream eleven stars, as well as the sun and the moon: I saw them prostrating themselves before me” (Yusuf 12:4). Jacob thought about this dream, and he believed it meant God would give Joseph every kind of opportunity, bestowed on him a high level of honor and renown, and make him an important leader. Aware of the feelings of the other brothers toward Joseph, Jacob feared they would try to harm him. So he told him, “O my son! Do not relate your dream to your brothers, lest (out of envy) they devise a scheme against you. Satan is a manifest enemy to humankind (and can incite them to do such a thing)” (Yusuf 12:5). The Qur’an goes on to describe the plan the brothers hatched, a terrible example of just how far jealousy between siblings can go:
When they (the brothers addressing one another) said, “Joseph and his brother are indeed more loved by our father than we are, even though we are a powerful band (of greater use to him). Surely, our father is manifestly mistaken.” (One of them said:) “Kill Joseph, or cast him out in some distant land so that your father’s attention should turn only to you, and after that, you may again become righteous people.” (Yusuf 12:8–9)
It is the duty of parents to recognize when a child is jealous and watch for how it will be expressed. From this aspect, keeping tabs on the relations between siblings and keeping their bickering under control can be a very difficult task for a family.
Undeniably, jealousy is an emotion that is embedded in human nature. The important thing is to prevent this negative element from causing damage to children and their environment. The way to do this is to channel these tendencies toward the positive with self-discipline. It is difficult to put forward any general, practically feasible solutions for such situations, as they are very sensitive and complex. It is, of course, necessary, in principle, for parents to listen to children, try to understand the reasons for their behavior, and examine their own attitudes and approaches. Parents should develop the ability to see situations and conditions from their children’s perspective. Other things parents can do to neutralize jealousy are to prepare games that will help children spend their physical and emotional energy in positive ways and to praise children when they get
along well and have fun together. Here are a few more tips:
Avoid incorrect educational methods. For example, do not always take the part of the younger sibling or automatically blame the older sibling. Often if you intervene just to “save” the younger child, it gives rise to contention between them without you realizing it.  Further, you may not know whether it was actually the older child who instigated the problem or not. Accordingly, sensitivity and attention are necessary if we are to treat children equally. It is also good to give them a chance to solve their own problems; tell them you trust them to do so.
Be sure to spend equal amounts of time with each child every day. If one is jealous of the other’s time, tell them that you want to be with each child and their turn will come.
Take care to make a distinction between siblings, and not to hold the others responsible when only one is doing something wrong.
Avoid giving different treatment to girls and boys, giving more importance to one or the other or being more proud of one or the other. For example, parents may have a son after many daughters or a daughter after many sons; in such situations, they tend to love this youngest more or show more tolerance toward them. This naturally promotes problems between the children.

power is power, and not everyone is powerful
when i see a lot of discussions who try to compare characters, the thing is, they forget about the very nature of the server, in that it is NOT our world despite how much it can feel like it, and thus the nature of power is much more primeval.
on a basic level, power is power. nothing else.
having the best armor doesn’t make you unkillable. Tommy had the first piece of netherite armor on the entire server. and it was stolen and used against him. Sam insists he’s one of, if not the, most powerful person the server - he still lost to a PVP with Dream. Techno infamously was able to kill Quackity with a pickaxe, some potions, and iron armor despite the latter being in full enchanted netherite.
now, in our world, resources = power. several people on the server take great pride in their resources (being the “richest”) but...once you have God Armor+Weapons and a solid base, you’re basically on the same playing field as everyone else, it then comes down to skill. because most people only have 3 lives, it’s not likely you NEED four stacks of Gapples and Diamonds. sure, it helps! in the Disc Finale, Dream talks a lot about how he has more than he’ll ever need and that Tommy and Tubbo can never feasibly beat him, but we’ve all seen an episode of Manhunt. Dream doesn’t need godtier items to be powerful. and it’s hard to say items make you powerful when out of canon, CC!Dream has a valid system to prevent people getting so far ahead no one can ever catch up (the End being closed and iron/villager/piglin farms being banned)
and all of this means the interactions of “powerful” people - Techno and Dream in particular - need to be taken with the concept in mind that in the end, all the “power” (resources, money, friends, allies) doesn’t matter if another person is able to kill you anyways. (other characters like Punz should be on that list as well but OOC we know he prefers to be a supporting character, Sapnap is involved but not as much as those two, etc.)
and what it also means is that objectively weaker characters will view the world fundamentally different from them because they do not have Power nor do they have misconceptions about who actually holds it. which brings us to this:
“One arrow can be easily broken. But when five arrows are be bound together, they become strong.”
people like Techno will not understand why a group needs to band together and consolidate power in an organized government, and it’s because his version of anarchy benefits him, and “governments” pose a threat to him (whether he wants to recognize or admit it is another story). he’s Powerful! nobody can, on their own, overpower him. the Disc Finale is the ultimate example of this - Dream was able to be taken down by the entire server joining together and saying “we’ve had enough” and Dream, despite all his Power, couldn’t outmatch them all. and though they weren’t part of a government, that’s ONLY because their governments had been forcibly dissolved and their country lands destroyed beyond repair.
L’manburg was originally about a group of people coming together to keep themselves safe from people with Power. The Disc Finale proves that was the way to go! Dream was considered unbeatable, even 2 vs 1, and we know from Manhunts not even 4 v 1 can take him down easily. but a dozen people? there’s no escaping that. Techno can say he did it at the Community House, but they weren’t actively hunting him - there are several “good enough” fighters that if they teamed against him, he would die. Sapnap alone got him down to 2.5 hearts on Doomsday. him + someone else? Techno would have been dead. that’s all it takes.
Dream understands this and did from very early on. he fully and absolutely understands why they formed a government. it’s exactly why he worked so hard to destroy it, and why he encouraged paranoia and sowed the seeds of distrust every chance he got, because it doesn’t need to be a “government” it’s any faction, any group that could get big enough to pose a threat, and if he can turn them on each other, he stays in control. he stays Powerful.
when Dream threatens people, when Techno comes into someone’s home and demands answers to his questions, when Sapnap tries to bust the drug ring, when Punz says stay away from the Egg, these are people who have Power. their actions, their threats, their intentions carry with them the Power to Kill if they don’t get their way. and that HAS to be considered when we look at how interactions play out and why other characters feel the way that they do.

𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 | 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐧
author's note: sorry i just cannot stop writing headcanons! it's my favorite thing to write. i really hope everyone enjoys these, they include things from these two works of mine as well :) -shea
𝐣𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐤𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐢𝐧
very much the involved boyfriend
once you guys finally start dating, he just immediately wants you guys to merge lives and share friends, even though that’s not a simple process
but it’s really because he cares about you so deeply he doesn’t want there to be a part of his life that you’re just not involved in
therefore; very involved
you guys manage your schedules together and plan out dinners and dates in advance
he mostly really likes having something to look forward too, like time with you
the kind of boyfriend that remembers little stuff you say here and there
like if you mention your mom’s birthday is coming up, he’ll ask later what you’re getting her and suggest some ideas. probably would send your mom flowers too to earn brownie points
or if you have a stressful week with exams and papers, he’ll stop by randomly with coffee and a snack and a hug
i honestly don’t see jean as the kind of boyfriend to start/carry on a fight, because he would hate knowing that you two are upset with each other. so i think any fights would be resolved pretty quickly
if one did happen to go over night or last a few days, he would definitely apologize first and bring you flowers, even if you were the one who started it
honestly though, with a guy like jean, what is there to fight about
overall, just a super caring boyfriend that makes the little stuff the memorable stuff
𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭
the! best! boyfriend! ever!
i see armin as the ideal caring boyfriend
he just really likes to have someone to take care of, and he is also really touched that someone trusts him enough to ensure their heart to him
so he takes every measure to make sure he’s being the best partner he can be
a lot of emotional sharing, and i feel like would happen pretty early on as well
only because he is so trustworthy and you know you can tell him everything on your mind, even stuff that you maybe haven’t told anyone else
this just makes your relationship progress even further. you two are the couple that has been dating for a month but knows they are going to be together for a long time
speaking of, you are the mom and the dad of the friend group, which is so adorable but calls for a lot of teasing from your friends
but armin knows he’s going to marry you one day, so he just laughs when eren cracks another joke about it
𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐮𝐧
i’ll be real, this relationship is definitely not the easiest
reiner definitely loves you, don’t get me wrong, but a big part of him probably thinks he doesn’t deserve someone like you to care about him
which isn’t easy in a relationship because i feel like he would try and distance himself from getting too attached in the beginning
maybe he just thinks you’re going to see through him and realize you don’t want this anymore (which is not true at all, but just his intrusive thoughts)
i think you would try to reassure him about your feelings and how much you want this relationship, but then he feels like you shouldn’t have to reassure him, and that you shouldn’t be in the kind of relationship where you have to reassure the person. basically he thinks you deserve someone better, and you know that there is no one better for you
eventually i think this reaches a breaking point. through a lot of angst and honesty and tears, you two finally work it out
i think after clearing things up, things take a huge turn for the better
he definitely learns that there’s nothing wrong with being a relationship where you have to take care of each other, and he’s definitely thankful that you continued to stand by him
so sorry about this angst, but on the bright side, this man would be such a devoted boyfriend
his friends definitely make fun of him for looking at you like you hung the stars and moon in the sky
i also think all this angst would lead to you two being really open and vulnerable with each other, which is really important to him
also definitely a mama’s boy and can’t wait to introduce you to her
just like armin, he knows you’re gonna be his wife someday
𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫
even though i think it would take eren a long time to settle down and commit to a healthy, long-term relationship, once he does, he would be a great boyfriend
he is a really caring guy, and i feel like part of his hesitance is about opening up to someone if they’re just gonna leave
but i think he can tell early on that this would be different
i have a feeling his love language is quality time, and so you two are always planning little things together
he especially loves last-minute, impromptu dates that arise from a random thought
like he’ll grab two sandwiches and take you to the beach at sunset, even if you just got home or had something to get done
or knock on your door at midnight and take you to the nearest roof to stargaze together
i feel like eren is the boyfriend who becomes your closest friend over time
you guys go to each other first when you need to rant or talk or babble endlessly
it’s an interesting dynamic but it works well for you guys
the kind of bf that people assume he’s a single bachelor and will stay that way forever, or people don’t believe that he’s settled down, and then when they see you two together they’re shocked
𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐨 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐭
you and marco have the most wholesome relationship
if i had to picture anyone whose relationship feels like the honeymoon phase even after a whole year, it is marco
he has a habit of making every small date, every meeting or interaction just feel so special, like every day is a special occasion
the kind of boyfriend who gets you a promise ring early on with every intention of replacing it with an engagement ring and wedding band one day
a big moment for him is introducing you to his friends! he knows they’ll love you, and he just wants you to meet the other most important people in his life
especially you and jean, this boy would be on cloud nine seeing you two get along so well. makes him super happy and teary-eyed
the responsible bf who takes care of everything for you, even little, everyday things so you don’t have to worry about it
like making sure there’s a cup of water on the nightstand when you go to bed, or setting an extra alarm to make sure you don’t oversleep, or reminding you about a deadline
overall just <3 boyfriend marco
𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐢 𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧
the nonchalant, cool boyfriend who has to hide how sappy he actually is
pretends like he’s not nervous as all hell on your first date. acts like you leaning into him on the walk back home, or kissing his cheek at your doorstep before you say good night isn’t giving him heart palpitations.
also majorly touch-starved. after you two really open up to each other, which happens way sooner than he expected, it’s hard for him to keep his hands away from you.
he’s reserved in public, a simple arm around you waist or hands interlaced while you guys are out
but when you’re in the privacy of your home, it’s almost instinctual for him to pull you close
he loves when you lay your head on his chest, but nothing compares to when you let him lay his head on yours.
you stroke his hair and sit in silence, appreciating the quiet mumble of the television and the sound of each other breathing
always falls asleep like this, and he’s never been much of a nap guy, but ever since he met you, he’s reformed
not to mention your skin is always so warm and soft, and his is always on the colder side, so he’s just drawn to you
also i see him as the kind of guy who proposes out of nowhere, like you aren’t expecting it at all after a quiet dinner together at home, you’re getting up to grab dessert and he pulls out a ring
“how about dessert and naps for as long as we both shall live?”
𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐨 𝐠𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐝
once again, pock tries to put on a tough facade but we all know he’s just a softie on the inside
in fact, it’s a little while into your relationship that you notice him softening up with you, trying less hard to seem like someone else and getting more comfortable around you
you definitely don’t mention it, because you don’t want him to realize how you’ve been noticing it lately, but it definitely makes your chest feel warm and fuzzy at the thought of him being more himself
it’s not long at all before you can’t even see any semblance of that tough guy you met for the first time
the kind of whipped boyfriend that carries your bags when you go shopping, grabs your coffee order on the way to visit you, and likes to have quiet nights in more than going out
your favorite memories with him include watching rom-coms and munching on popcorn in his apartment, everyone else out and about on a saturday night
the leftover pizza is sitting on the counter, and you turn to go put it away when you notice pock teary-eyed at the movie!
yes, this boy cries at sappy romantic movies and you regret ever putting on the notebook that one night because you wanted to get laid after and that just did not happen because he was crying too much
but also just treats you so right and has every intention of being the best boyfriend he can, doesn’t ever want to do anything to hurt you and is highkey very glad he met you and has someone to be so open and comfortable with!
𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫
can you spell boyfriend material.
the most comforting, wholesome boyfriend in the world. you actually can’t believe he’s single when you guys meet for the first time, because there’s just no way.
this is the take him home to meet your parents guy, introduce him to your friends right away guy because you know it’s serious
i talked about how bertholdt is the bf who just listens to your talks and rambles for as long as you need to, and always offers advice and sweet words, but he really does take it to the next level
lets you cry it out when you need to, rubbing your back and hair softly and not minding when his shirt is covered in tears
or alternatively lets you rant about your annoying professor or a terribly rude stranger or whatever else is plaguing your mind today
texts you every day asking how you’re doing, always calls you before bed if you guys aren’t together
he just has the ability to make you feel so heard and seen
and of course you never forget to take care of him, as well. it makes for a really comfortable dynamic.
very easy to imagine spending the rest of your life with him despite the fact that he has kicked you off the bed multiple times in his sleep
𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐡
alternatively, husband material
takes all of five minutes into having a conversation with him to realize this is a responsible, mature guy
which are usually far and few between
i’d like to think he’s similar to marco in the way that he likes to make sure things are taken care for you, he likes to get things off of your shoulders even though you feel like you should be doing it for him instead
this translates to a lot of checking in phone calls, making sure you’ve eaten dinner and haven’t skipped meals because of your busy schedule
always makes time for you and especially loves having date nights every saturday, it’s wonderful when you haven’t been able to see him all week
anyways, you get engaged and married so fast bc you just had to snatch him up

Hear me out
Monty and Freddy, the two himbos right?
What if they get a stupid crush on the new Animatronic, and he is H U G E.
Basically two idiots are falling in love with a tall boy?
You are lucky I like thinking about huge fucking robots. For the sake of simplicity I’m making the animatronics a pig/boar cause those things get big:
So the PizzaPlex is like getting tired of Chica constantly eating the leftover garbage and getting damaged, but the normal staff bots can’t keep up with the messes
They aren’t gonna hire someone cause that a lot of money over time. So why not cut costs and just make a new animatronic meant to encourage clean up and made to clean up
Couldn’t they just modify Chica? Yeah, but FazEnt isn’t known for clever thinking
The band catches wind of this addition and can’t help but speculate. Is it gonna be another performer, another version of one of them? An old face? It’s killing them all
Freddy catches wind that the new animatronic is almost ready in parts and services, “just a waiting a few more programming fixes and he’s set” he overheard some staff saying
It’s not that he’s nosey, he just wants to make sure the new guy feels welcomed. Plus it’s exciting to sneak around after hours
He gets to the stage when he hears “Where do you think you’re going?” Monty is of course, budding in. “Seeing how our new friend is doing.”
Monty honestly didn’t care but he wasn’t gonna let Freddy get the first good impression on the new guy. So he joins him, hitting the button to parts and service, almost leaving Freddy falling as he rushed to get on the stage
If they could say profanity…
The trip down was silent and slow, maybe because they both were nervous about what to expect
Parts in service was closed, even the window blocked out with do not enter tape. “Really keeping him a surprise.” Monty went to get through the door, a loud clunk and them not budging giving them both pause.
Monty kept slamming on the doors, not one to give up easily. It was odd that they’d be locked, especially this late
“Monty please you’re going to hurt yourself.” The slamming continued, until the gator wound back, running into the door only to go flying through, whatever was blocking the door gone
Freddy rushed in concerned if not annoyed his warning was not heeded only to be stopped by the sight before him, Monty looking up at the same thing from his position on the floor: The new animatronic
It was fucking MASSIVE. Not that the room was filled but it easily obscured the view of the protective cylinder, dwarfing the door and the two just came through it
Taking him all in, both could clearly see that he was modeled after a hog or perhaps a boar: Tusks, a signature snout, hooves and the size to match
“Oh my apologies, fella, I didn’t realize someone was trying to get in” He spoke to Monty in a gentle apologetic tone before using a massive hand to lift the gator to his feet.
He lifted him effortlessly, much like a leather hand bag, his hand only being a little smaller than the gators head. Monty stood stunned by it
“Please, we were intruding on you.” Freddy broke the silence from staring, offering a paw to shake. “We actually came to, uh, meet you?”
“How swell! Well I ain’t got a name yet, but don’t let that stop ya from givin me yours.” His hand practically engulfed Freddy’s, shaking him entirely with the greeting. What a jovial fellow.
Name exchanges and greetings over with the two tried to give polite conversation that weren’t just an outright investigation.
Asking what he’d be used for, telling him about the band, and the other bots in the PizzaPlex. It seemed that he hadn’t been programmed with any details of the mall yet
“A whole golf course, themed after ya self? Well I’ll be.” The new guy had sat on the floor while the others stood, an attempt to get on their level. “Must be real popular.” Monty had begun bragging explaining that he had a whole attraction themed after himself, easily catching the fascination of the boar. “You got something yourself Mr. Fazbear?”
Monty couldn’t help the smug feeling growing as Freddy awkwardly explained he didn’t really have anything specific. “Oh that’s fine, ain’t this whole place themed after you anyway?”
The conversation shifted to Freddy himself, Monty not understanding why the new guys attention shifting to the bear upset him so much.
“Well it’s themed after the Fazbear Enterprise.”
“Now don’t be humble, Mr. Fazbear. Almost everything is shaped like your friendly face.” He gave Freddy a pat on the back, rocking him a bit with the reassurance.
Monty swished his tail in agitation when Freddy chuckled, rubbing the back of his head plate in resignation. “I suppose you’re right.” A smile forming on the boars face.
“Course I’m right! It’s an honor to be working your establishment.” The boar let out a snorting chuckle, rumbling his plates before abruptly stopping, a confused snort replacing the laughter that rocked him.
“You okay man?” Monty tilted his shades to get a better look at the bot. Nothing seemed out of order, but he was still in parts and service for a reason.
“You two wouldn’t know what flashing red means ,huh? Been happening to me all day” The boar tapped his head, trying to knock the flashing away before Freddy stopped him, the bears hand not fully wrapping around the wrist of the other.
“Ah, it seems you need to recharge, or enter rest mode.”
“That all? Here I’m thinking a wires split.” That laughter returned, “Well I supposed this was nice boys but it seems I need some R&R!”
“Yes, we wouldn’t want you to shut down before all your maintenance is done with.” The two waved goodbye as he walked out, Monty looking back as he stepped out, just to see that the other had enter rest mode properly.
“He was nice.”
“He liked me more. Thought the course was cool.” Monty held on to the comment about being popular, and the interest in his course. He would have to invite him once the bot was fully operational.
Freddy rolled his eyes, of course that’s what Monty took away from such a nice meeting. “You should take him their then,” Though, it was not like he didn’t notice how the gator seemed annoyed when the new addition began focusing on him. “…after he gets used to my PizzaPlex.”
Monty was about to agree before he processed the last line, the emphasis on the my almost making a circuit break.
Freddy knew the verbal assault he was going to get was worth getting under the gators casing just this once.
This is more of a first meeting sorta thing but it’s definitely a set up for them fighting for the attention of the big new guy. Also damn this was a lot.

Cornerstone (Yeah, that Arctic Monkeys song) - Fic with Damiano David.
prompt: Damiano used to date your sister, but now that she's dead you're the only thing that can keep her alive for him, making him not worried that he might forget her face.
warnings: none, just pure sadness. Oh, and tysm Evie for the lovely help on this one!!
Tumblr media
You remembered well the first time you saw Damiano. It was on the first of many parties you would go in your life, it was the night of your 18th birthday and considering how introverted and reserved you were, your sister, who although looks a lot like you, appearance wise, your personalities were complete opposites, decided that you needed to celebrate in a dignified way. Well, you were two years apart, but her behavior at parties made her seem older than her age, she appeared more experienced, she tolerated drinks well and her charisma was perfect, just right for the party. As much as you always imagined she would be like that, given you were used to seeing her come home late at night on weekends, it was fascinating, even a little intimidating to see for yourself. Basically, Parrot’s Beak was made for her. After 45 minutes of partying, your eyes had noticed Damiano drinking with some friends, his cheekbones were prominent cute, his eyes were striking, and the drink was starting to take effect on his cheeks making them become a lovely, flushed pink - almost like his skin was begging to be kissed. You could replay that moment in your head whenever you wanted, you didn’t even have to close your eyes. Over time, you’ve forced yourself to smile at him, pull your hair out of your eyes between shy glances, trying your hardest to make yourself good-looking for him. It didn’t take long for him to walk towards you, making your nervous and hopeful smile in the process turn into disappointment. You soon realized his glances in between swigs of beer were not for you, but for your sister. He hadn’t even noticed you there, and the sensation that filled your body was painful. That night you accepted you were left out as they walked to the bathroom, and the best to do was to keep your first impressions of Damiano to yourself. It would be the best thing to do; even after the 4-year anniversary of them being together, and of you still finding Damiano stunning.
“You need to stop callin’ me,” you sighed, brushing the back of your hand over your eyes. It was dawn, if she had been there, she would have already made you get up, would have taken the phone from your hands and lay on top of you, making you laugh until you’d fall asleep together. “It’s been almost a year now; you need to stop calling me.”
“But you always make it better,” his drunk voice echoed in your ear. Strange, but you liked listening to him, he spent so many years making her happy that listening to him was like feeling her smiling widely at you after buying chocolate cake at the coffee bar around the corner that you now worked for.
“What do I make better, Damiano?” You asked, prolonging something that didn’t feel right.
“Me,” he sighed deeply, making you do the same. “I like your voice, even more after you’ve woken up, it’s so calm and crystal clear,” He kept talking until your voice broke into a sharp sob as you tried to bite your lip to contain yourself, if she was there she would’ve calmed him down with just a word; but she wasn’t, and he was like that because he didn’t have her anymore.
“I like you Dami, I truly wish you nothing but the best, but I can’t do this anymore,” you verbalized, knowing there were chances of him being oblivious to the fact that he was looking for you because you reminded him of her. “I miss her too, and it’s being too painful.”
With that being said you hung up the phone, pressing it against your chest knowing he would call again next night and then you would pick up, exchange a few words with him, feeling miserable right after for letting him do it again; but the truth was, on the next day you would feel good, not in a healthy way, but in a nostalgic way that would leave you trapped in a cheery image of your sister; whenever she had the opportunity to describe how amazing a date with Damiano was would make you bear through the day.
As you soaked your pillow, the loud music from The Rusty Room along with dancing people made Damiano wet his lips in a dirty smile, his night would be like any other since she was gone, he would get drunk enough to see her face on someone else and would be able to snuggle between the legs of his new salvation or get kicked out for being too much and have no choice but to call you. On nights when his feelings are stronger than before, he would do both. He would call you in hopes that when you answered, you would miraculously become her, then he would tell you about his day and how no one in the band seems to put up with him anymore, and then would wait until you told him it would be okay. Clearly, nothing worked like that in your mind, you were as tough as she was, which was good for him to feel in her presence, but not what he needed at the moment; not least because you had never spoken for more than 5 minutes. That way, he had no choice but to keep looking for her.
Still digesting your dry words, he caught sight of her golden hair and pale skin being bathed in the strong red light, she smiled at him, huddled up in a wicker chair, her eyes was in the same level with his as he wandered up for a closer look, and it felt like it was for the first time, so he came close and kissed her, taking all the air out of her lungs to himself; the random girl wouldn’t mind having another name tonight.
Damiano returned home the next morning in his car, swearing he could still smell her scent on his coat, transmitting it to his seatbelt while he lengthened his trip to the next coffee bar just to be able to feel her presence for longer.
“He’s all yours today!” Your manager said in mock animation.
His eyes were lazy, his lips rosier than usual trapped in a perfect pout, stubble on his face and yet he looked like an angel; but smelling of booze and sleep deprived.
“What do you want?” You asked, observing him up and down; putting on your best character to try to fool him, or yourself. “You need to stop killin’ yourself like that, Dami.” You let your eyes dip into his, and what a regret, now your whole body tingled.
“I just wanna a nice coffee, I need to be alive to work,” he raised his hands in redemption, giving you a cute half smile. His voice as melody and sweet as on the phone. “I just need to calm my mind down, buttercup.”
His whisper ran down your spine, making drops of coffee from the machine splash onto your hand instead of into the cup, your body knew it was wrong, but your mind had liked being called that.
“How’s life?! How’s things goin’, huh, after all that, y’know…” He went on while you gave him his usual hot coffee.
In response, you shook your head, looking around you, cursing the place for not being so busy so that you could have more customers.
“Fine, no more talk, buttercup.” He sounded low and careful this time. You had to take your eyes off him because you felt like you were going to cry.
No more smiles on his tired face, he straightened his clothing, handing you a crumpled currency. Avoiding his eyes, you took it in your hand, taking his change and writing it out in Letraset for him.
“Thank you,” he said, this time without repeating the pet name, since both you and him were now being watched by your manager. Even in front of others, his eyes filled with tears as he looked at your writing; so similar to hers in form, yet so cruel.
“You shouldn’t let him call you the same way he sweet called her.” The manager warned you when he saw the boy leave. Your sister was always around with Damiano, they were completely in love with each other and never hid it from anyone, it was obvious he had noticed.
“He just needs to heal.”
“So do you.”
‘No, you can’t call me the way you used to call her’ were marked on his change.
Battleship, next night.
Rum was already a necessary substance to oxygenate his blood, it was the 4th shot, he had a dizzy mind with you on it, from the tip of your nose that seemed to follow him when he was speaking, to your contradictory voice that sounds just like hers when you say that you don’t want him around. He needed you.
He glanced around the room, searching for his daily fix of sex for the night but soon changed his mind, taking his cell phone in his hands and punching in your number that he already knew by heart.
“I’m sorry, you’re by yourself?” A serene voice awakened him from his trance, the blond hair and lips drawn in a perfect heart shape similar to hers made him forget about his cell phone.
“Yes, I am.” He confirmed, his throat going dry. Every night the same thing, but he still got carried away by a vision trick; given that the reality was way too difficult to face. “All by myself and free for the night.”
She laughed at his despair, and even though the sound wasn’t similar to hers, he decided he could play pretend in his mind. The girl’s laugh fell silent, feeding his head with the image of her as he closed his eyes tight, for a second he swore not to feel his feet anymore, wondering if it might be the effect of being close to be her ghost but when he said it out loud, calling the random girl by her name, all he felt was a pair of hands pushing him back while cursing him in as many ways as possible. Had the girl said her name to him? He couldn’t tell, it wasn’t like he cared.
“I need you,” you had tears running down your chin, your voice was nothing but sobs.
His smile widened, scratching the affected spot, feeling his body becoming more relaxed as he heard your voice filling the phone call. You needed him, so you called him. Just like in every other night.
“A nightmare again?” He asked cautiously, not even needing to ask what it had been about; he already knew.
“Yes,” you looked tired, as much as he did. “I need you, Dami, I can’t stop thinking about her.”
“I’m on my way, buttercup.”
The shared room still smelled of her, he knew it was because of you spreading the rest of her perfume across the bed she slept in. The atmosphere was different without her there, you both felt it, but somehow it felt good to be there and feel a bit of her false presence.
“You’re drunk again,” you sighed as he brought his fingers to your cheekbone, pulling some tears away. “She wouldn’t like that.”
He nodded, “she really wouldn’t.” Damiano smiled, seeing a shy smile spread across your lips.
Your movements were quick as silence filled the room, your arms went around his waist, making him have no choice but to snuggle you into his grip, a relieved sigh left his lips and he felt good knowing you no longer cried. The lack of voices made everything more comfortable, it cleared his mind, making his muscles relax. And when he felt you dig your face deeper into his shirt, he let his chin rest on your head as you found comfort in the scent that had often been used to be on her clothes.
The weather was grey, sad. Similar with your mood. Staying motivated to work was not what you wanted today, or any other day.
“What are you doing outside? You weren’t supposed to be working?” Damiano said, tucking you under his umbrella, his eyebrow puckered into a cute pout.
“I can’t work, I’m very sad and sleepless.” You imitated your manager’s voice, showing pure irritation.
“Not a good day, I see,” he remained in high spirits, even seeing your angry face as your request for Uber was denied on the screen in your hands.
“Wouldn’t you go get a coffee?” You deposited your disappointment in him. His face still in a smile, he was never one to be shaken by so little; just like her, in fact so alike to her that it was quite annoying at times. She wouldn’t be giving the hate for her bad day to anyone.
“There’s no point, I only come here for you.” Your mind knew well, it was already used to his tricks, but you still couldn’t help but smile.
His words softened your body and you allowed yourself to look at him, he didn’t seem to have had a rough night, his eyes were still as intense as she had described the night she met him. “Cornerstone doesn’t make any sense without me, I agree with you.” His lips spread; you were happy to make him smile.
The comfortable silence seemed to wrap you around each other, he brushed your hair back from your eyes, getting so close he thought you would might understand. “Can I get much closer?”
You nodded, feeling the tears blurring your vision. You knew he saw in you a way not to forget her face, but letting him go would hurt more. “Look, I’m really not supposed to — but yes, you can call me anything you want.”

I'm OBSESSED with your writing. Can you try.. Maybe, Donnie being a filthy boy being an 'stalker-ish' of his long time crush? Be checks their FB for new posts, saves every picture of them he finds? He doesn't mean to be a creep, feels guilty, but just doesn't know how to ask for more than friendship?
Good afternoon Anon. Here is my short story in relation to your ask.
I wasn't sure where you wanted me to take this, so I had to do a bit of guessing on my part. I hope this something like you were wanting.
I will admit that this ask was a bit of a struggle for me, not knowing a clear direction to take it outcome made me a little unsure of my writing and guessing abilities LOL. However, I will admit to crying along with the characters in this story more than once.
Thanks again for the ask and the initial compliment. I hope to continue to earn your favor in future posts.
Tumblr media
· Stalker [noun]: 1a person who harasses or persecutes someone with unwanted and obsessive attention. 2a person who hunts game stealthily.
· Donnie stared at the definition on his one of his monitor screens while his various other screens were busy flashing receipts of files downloaded, text trail streams from your phone, notices of any social media post/update/like/heart/emoji, a GPS line grid of your routes today (overlayed over the routes you’d taken previously), and data search hits of anything and everything that pertained to you.
· At this point, the boy had literally every picture you had ever posted, anywhere, of yourself. In fact, he had all the pictures that other people posted of you in them. He had even gone through the effort of designing a face recognition program that picks you out of the background of total strangers’ pictures and, yeah, he had those in a file too.
· He has special file folders that compile things that you like, things you don’t like, things that make you happy, things that make you sad. He is your own personal Pinterest and you didn’t even know it… and maybe that is the part that keeps bothering him so much.
· He sits staring at that word and definition and chewing his bottom lip. True, he knows the word and the meaning, but he needed to LOOK at it, analyze it, mull it over in his guilt ridden brain.
· He just KNEW the word Stalker couldn’t apply to him.
· After all, he isn’t harassing or persecuting you, you don’t know! So, it isn’t necessarily ‘unwanted attention’. It is just…unknown attention.
· Stealthily, hmmmm, did that part apply to him? Well, He isn’t EXACTLY being stealthy.
· If you knew about technology like him, then you would probably see his programs running on your devices and be alerted to his activities. AND, if you shared his love and view of technology, then you would probably be more understanding of his activities and not consider them stealthy…just data mining. In fact, you might applaud him.
· ‘Ok, that was taking it a bit too far’, Donnie thinks to himself and he feels a band tighten and squeeze around his infatuated heart.
· He is almost certain that you would be shocked to learn of his extra curricular activities and how they revolve around every aspect of you.
· Regardless of how he tried to spin the truth and wiggle out of the definition of stalker, Donnie still felt guilty for invading your privacy. However, he honestly couldn’t help himself…at least not anymore.
· He has fought the urge, the nagging thoughts and the burning need, to know more about you for what seemed like an eternity.
· Listen to him, he is starting to sound dramatic like Mikey! What is his turning into? He is losing his rational edge!
· To be accurate, it hasn’t been an eternity. In fact, he has known you 1 year, 36 days, 14 hours, 11 minutes, and 23 seconds to be exact. However, you started occupying space in his mind 2 minutes into meeting you and your claim over his mind has grown exponentially over time.
· You were quiet and reserved during that first meeting, so there wasn’t much to go on. It started as a simple visual interest with a thought of ‘Oh. She’s pretty’.
· However, then you started talking and that changed everything.
· You opened up more and more each time you hung out with their little group, revealing layers and layers of interests and personality. You were fascinating…and that’s when his thoughts about you really started to snowball and spiral out of control.
· You went from being a simple pretty face to being a walking embodiment of everything he seriously ever dreamed of having in a mate.
· Early on, there were three sticking points that really made Donnie’s feelings problematic. 1. He was a nearly seven foot tall walking talking turtle and you weren’t. 2. You had a boyfriend that you were deeply in love with and adored. 3. Donnie was too insecure about #1 and how you felt about inter-species dating to let you know that you had started to OWN his heart.
· Now, thanks to his surveillance, there were only two sticking points….#1 and #3.
· He still remembers the feelings of that day, 44 days ago, when the blip of information popped up on this screen alerting him to the fact that your boyfriend was starting to stray.
· Donnie had severely conflicting feelings bombard him at once and it was overwhelming.
· The initial knee jerk reaction was elation, one of the problems blocking him from you may soon be null.
· However, the feeling of elation only lasted for a second or two before the intense anger and sadness set in. Donnie was honestly shocked at the depth of his anger, he didn’t even know he had that level of malice in him. Had he been in physical proximity to your boyfriend at that moment in time, Donnie isn’t sure that he wouldn’t have hurt your guy…or worse.
· How COULD this guy do this? WHY would he? He HAD YOU! What the heck was this guy thinking? Not only did he have you, but you thought the world of him. When you spoke about him you would smile so genuinely, your eyes would shine and gaze off into a bright imagined future. Donnie was always so jealous to watch it happen, he wondered what it would be like to be THAT GUY. And here the idiot was throwing it all away and meeting up with another girl!
· WHAT THE…(yes, this called for a curse) HELL…IS WRONG WITH HUMAN MEN?
· As the anger set root in his heart, the sadness engulfed Donnie like an all-consuming wave. He realized he was going to have to share this information with you, somehow, and that he was going to have to watch as it destroyed you.
· At first, Donnie had a plan to try and save you both from that fate. True, it would hurt him more to save your relationship, but he would rather be the one facing the pain and not you.
· He TRIED to circumvent the situation. He sent anonymous messages to your boyfriend stating that he knew about the infidelity and that he would tell you if needed. However, it didn’t seem like your boyfriend cared because he sent messages back stating Donnie could, basically, go fuck himself.
· Life had cruel sense of irony, thought Donnie, that is exactly what I do since this moron has the woman that I love.
· So, after trying for nearly two weeks to stop what was happening behind your back, Donnie had no choice but to let you in on the secret.
· Donnie couldn’t come right out and tell you that he caught your boyfriend cheating by hijacking your data streams and the data streams of those around you. So, Donnie intercepted some texts between your boyfriend and his mistress and he then sent you a text, under the guise of your boyfriend, telling you to meet him at a specified restaurant for a date.
· It had been a gut wrenching night for Donnie. He remembered watching it all play out on camera feeds from around the restaurant and street outside. He watched you dressed up in your pretty dress get out of your cab in front of the restaurant. You had such a lovely smile on your face, you must have thought you were in for a romantic evening.
· He watched as you walked inside and how the hostess got flustered and confused by a 2nd girl showing up for your boyfriend’s seated-for-two table.
· Donnie stopped breathing as your eyes found the new couple holding hands and giving each other sweet kisses across the table. Hands and lips that were supposed to be yours were touching some stranger.
· Donnie watched your smile and eyes die…the light of your inner sun go out…
· …and it killed him.
· He’s not sure who was crying the hardest, you standing there in that restaurant witnessing the scene or him back at the lair watching your world crush around you on his monitor.
· It had taken a while for you both to recover from that night.
· His brothers noticed his melancholy mood for a couple of weeks but Donnie wouldn’t tell them what was bothering him. And you stayed in your bed, refusing to face the world, for nearly as long.
· Eventually, the group began to notice your silence and absence, so April stopped by your apartment to check on you. She was the one to pull you out of bed, get you to shower and eat. She visited everyday and made sure you had someone to vent to and a shoulder to cry on.
· Donnie was glad that April could be there for you when he couldn’t. He didn’t think it was appropriate for him, a male, to be your confidant at that time. Especially since he felt so much guilt over having to be the one to expose you to that pain.
· No, he didn’t CAUSE the pain, but he did have to make you face it and he didn’t like not being able to protect you from it. You were such a rare, precious creature and watching you in pain felt like he was suffocating slowly.
· There were some points during those first few weeks that he questioned if he did the right thing, but logic told him it would have eventually come to pass with or without his involvement. It was better to rip the bandage of quickly and let you start to heal than it was to let you linger and drag out the inevitable.
· Donnie did secretly check on you every single night during patrol. And, of course, his surveillance feeds were always running. He watched from a distance as his beautiful phoenix burn down to ashes and, eventually, started to rise again.
· Now, it’s been over 3 months and you’ve begun to be more like your old self. Donnie can tell there is a silent sadness there, but you are able to laugh and smile with the group during your get togethers. And each time you two are left alone, his mind nags at him about those last two sticking points.
· Would you be at all interested in him? And HOW does he go about telling you that you have become the center of his world?
· Still staring at the monitor and the Stalker definition, Donnie sighs and rubs the bridge of his snout to release of the pressure now pushing against the inside of his head. The memories of what has happened, the emotions of what was and what is, it was all starting to be too much.
· “Bro, what’s all this?”, Mikey says standing behind Donnie’s chair, talking around a mouth full of pizza.
· “NOTHING!”, says Donnie, voice breaking from the stress of being caught. A startled Donnie quickly taps some keys on his keyboard and the screens revert back to the standard lair camera feeds.
· Mikey may look or even come off as naïve at times, but he’s no fool, he can sense that his older brother is trying to hide something. “Dude, seriously, what was that? I’ve been standing back here reading the screens. I saw Y/N’s name and that looked like her phone number on that other file…, you know the file that looks like texts messages. And why is there a plotted map of the area around her apartment, her work, and to the lair? What’s up?”, Mikey said giving a disapproving look at being thought a pushover.
· “Just standard surveillance, Mikey, nothing to worry about.”, Donnie says trying to placate Mikey’s curiosity. Donnie hates lying, especially to Mikey, but he’s feeling so guilty about being such a…(inward sigh)…stalking creep that admitting the truth is hard to do.
· Mikey stands there staring at Donnie and, as he does, Donnie begins to fidget with his computer chair armrests.
· Mikey stuffs the remnants of the pizza slice into his mouth and does his best Leo impersonation by crosses his arms and staring down at Donnie as sternly as his jolly face can achieve, “Dude, I’m not going to ask you again. You’ve been weird for months. We’ve let it go for the most part but now you are hiding things from me…from ME, dude! You and I, we’re like peanut butter and jelly, we’re ice cream and chocolate fudge, we young dudes have got to stick together. Trust me, bro, I’ve got you!”.
· Donnie stared at the floor, too ashamed to meet Mikey’s eyes any longer. He gave a heavy sigh and reluctantly started to speak, “Sorry Mike, I…I honestly don’t know what’s come over me lately. I’m doing things I never thought I would do, I’m feeling so guilty about it, but I don’t know if I can stop doing it either. I feel…lost.”.
· Mike relaxed his leader stance and leaned against one of Donnie’s lab tables, “Bro, I can tell you’ve been carrying some heavy stuff lately. You need to let it out.”
· Donnie felt the heat rise up through his body like he was suddenly being consumed by a fire and he ripped his glasses off his face and drew them down on the desk in frustration, “Mikey, I’m in love with Y/N. I have been for a while. I have been…”, Donnie hangs his head in shame, “…tracking all her digital foot prints and watching her. In fact, I’m the reason she found out that asshole boyfriend of her's cheated.”
· Mikey’s mouth drops open at Donnie’s demeanor and use of the word ‘asshole’, “Whoa, dude, why didn’t you say something earlier?”.
· Donnie can feel a stinging at the corners of his eyes, this was so embarrassing, so frustrating, so…..so many things at a once. He didn’t have a response for Mikey, all he could do was shake his head.
· Still with his head hung down and staring at the floor, Donnie starts to hear Mikey chuckle. Donnie looks up to see Mikey’s eyes on him and for some reason they are full of merriment at his painful dilemma. Donnie stares at his, normally, very considerate brother in astonishment, this isn’t like Mikey at all!
· “Mikey, I’m more than serious here, now is not the time to make fun of me. What is so funny?”, Donnie asks exasperatedly.
· Mikey shakes his bald head and claps his brother on the shoulder with his green hand, “Bro, she thinks you’re cute.”.
· “W-What?!”, Donnie stammers out.
· Mikey, still chuckling, says, “Yeah, dude, that’s why I asked WHY you didn’t say something about liking her sooner, she’s always thought you were cute. She and I talk about it all the time.”.
· Donnie just stares at his jolly brother in silence. His mind is too blown to form a sentence.
· Mikey turns to leave stating, “And by the way, dude, stop watching her like that…that’s just creepy.”.

a/n: so sorry this took so long, I’ll try to get pt.2 up by the end of this week:) let me know what you think!
Summary: Y/n meets Lavender for the first time (the Disneyland part will be in pt.2 hehe)
my other stories are in my masterlist:)
Disneyland Pt.1 (j.a.)
Tumblr media
“What should I do with my hair?” you asked honestly, standing behind the vanity with your box of hair tools on the table-top. Jack stood behind you as he got ready himself. “Should I curl it, or straighten it or-”
“Y/n,” He chuckled breathily, glancing at you through the reflection of the mirror. “she’s not going to be too focused on your hair, my love.” He focused back on combing out his damp hair, one hand gripping the comb to steadily sweep through his brunette curls and the other glinting brightly in the shaft of late morning sun from the open bathroom window.
Jack wanted to look his absolute best for his two favourite people. You and Lavender were two of the most precious people to him in the world. The two people that saved him, even though Lavender was only little. Becoming a father was beyond scary but she turned out to be his lighthouse in stormy seas, the beams of light illuminating the path to happiness when he thought there wasn’t one. Things had changed greatly since she was born, but he couldn’t have been happier to experience life with her. And you were his anchor, keeping him safe and level-headed through the high and low waves of his life even before you were officially dating. You made it official six months ago, and throughout those months Jack had watched you take care of him in every situation. From helping him with chores to cooking him meals to simply asking if he was doing okay. It was the simple details in your presence that really solidified you were his one and only.
When you weren’t there, Lavender was the one keeping him happy when others couldn’t. Her missing toothed grin would send a million sparks of joy into him with every second his gaze would linger, and the little polaroid stuck on his bathroom mirror never let him forget just how grateful he was for her. The times she’d be living with her mother would still be as amazing - Facetimes and phone calls would be his favourite moment of the day. He knew that with you two by his side, today would be one of the best days in a while.
“What about my outfit?” You turned to Jack, resting your hands on your hips. “It’s cute, right?” you asked, dropping your gaze to peer down at your chosen attire.
“Yes, you’re always cute.” He smiled, dropping the comb back into the drawer. He took a few steps towards you, outstretching his arms for a cuddle. You let him rest his arms lazily around your waist and with his chin hovering upon your head, he placed a kiss to your scalp. “And look, it even has the colour lavender in it.” You grinned proudly up at him. Jack saw the lavender patches of the cardigan draped loosely over your shoulders, emphasising how much thought you put into this whole thing.
“I see,” Jack laughed lightly, placing another kiss on your forehead.
“I just hope she likes me; you know?”
“She will, Y/n. She’s a simple toddler.” He chuckled, “she likes ice-cream and cuddles and toys.” He let out a breathy laugh, gazing towards you with a soothing smile.
Jack’s smile was so familiar, from the dimples indenting his cheeks to the scrunching of his brown eyes you could stare into for hours. But his shining smile when he saw his daughter? That was a sight you could never get bored of. Of course, it wasn’t the first time you’d seen a moment like that, but it was her first time seeing it in person. The two of them meeting each other for another time - interlocking eyes and sharing identical smiles.
On the wooden dining room chair, Lavender sat beside her grandma, finishing up her brunch snack. Her legs kicked the air, swinging back and forth and almost mirroring an image of yours and Jack’s internal excitement.
“Lavy!” Jack beamed, opening the door wide for Y/n to walk in before he even greeted his daughter with a hug. A fraction of a second later, Lavender’s little head shot up from her plate, her surprised eyes now glued to her father’s. She wrung her hands in excitement, squealing “Dada!”
The height of the chair from the ground had her rooted in her spot until Jack’s mom hopped off her seat to help her down. “I missed you, baby!” Jack exclaimed as her little body bumped into his. He lifted her up to his chest and wreathed his tattooed arms around her. “Oh, how I missed you,” He sang quietly, sinking his head lightly into her shoulder with gentle kisses pressed over her  shirt. Lavender’s giggles filled the air, spreading joy to Jack and his mom.
You watched silently a few paces away, letting your mix of happy and nervous thoughts grow. The vague smile playing at your lips barely masked the nervousness within you and it almost felt as though you had to perk up your lips before they drooped down again. Jack’s mom had made her way over to you while the other two basked in their sweet moment of reunion.
“Y/n,” She greeted softly, holding out her hands for a hug.
You turned to her. “Hi!” sighing in relief now that you had some sort of distraction from your cloudy mind.
“It’s so nice to see you again.” Kristin spoke as you two pulled back. Her arm remained on your back as she guided the pair of you towards the dining table.
“I’ve missed you.” you admitted timidly, taking a seat at the table, legs slightly angled towards the other two. Jack’s mom breezed around the place as she gathered the plates from the table. “I’ve missed you too.” She replied. You let her gaze linger on your boyfriend on the couch with his daughter on his lap. You noticed Lavender’s delicate stare and mustered up the courage to wave. The corners of Lavender’s lips twitched upwards even more in response.
“Are they always this cute?” You asked, looking back at Kristin as she sat down next to you.
“You best believe it.” She spoke into her mug. “No matter how much time they’d spent apart they are always so excited to see each other.” In the short time you looked away, Jack had snuck up behind her with Lavy still wrapped in his arms cosily. Her head nestled further into his shoulder as he spoke.
“Lavy,” Jack beamed. You whipped her head back at the sweet sound of her name and grinned happily.
“Say hi to Y/n,” he said. “Give her a hug.” Jack whispered into her ear, sneaking a glance at you who was merely watching Lavender’s face lit up at his quiet words. She giggled innocently as if he shared a sacred secret only the two of them could know. Jack lowered her to the floor again.
“Hey Lavender.” You said as steadily as she could, feeling the nervousness bubble up in the small silence. You angled herself towards Lavender and hunched your shoulders a little. With little steps tapping along the floor, Lavender inched closer to your legs.
“Hi, Y/n.” She said, balling her hands into fists shyly. Her ever so sweet voice sent smiles and quiet giggles falling from your lips. You snapped your head to Jack almost instantly as if to tell him what just happened like he wasn’t just watching it. Lavender looked back at him too, and following a small nod from her father, Lavender stretched her arms out to hug you. Her arms barely reached over but even still; you couldn’t hide her pout at Lavender’s unexpected sweetness. She lifted her up a little and they shared a quick smile.
“You are just the sweetest little girl,” you cooed, lowering her to the floor.
“Yeah,” Lavender replied, stepping backwards to Jack again shyly. Light laughter flourished over the three of you momentarily before you and Jack exchanged happy glances. You were especially relieved.

on the school dance fallout or, a thorough examination of the boys’ apologies to julie
full disclosure, i used to take serious issue with 1.06 for what it did to julie’s righteous anger in light of the boys letting her down, and my gripes haven’t fully gone away. but i have spent some time thinking on the fallout since my first (several) viewing(s) of the show and i finally noticed some emotionally nuanced storytelling that i needed time to come to appreciate. so, if you’ll indulge me another gif-filled meta post...
everyone knows that a good apology demonstrates an understanding of how you wronged the person you’re apologizing to, otherwise the words i’m sorry end up being fairly empty. and luckily for the boys, julie does a good job of immediately and effectively communicating her hurt feelings:
Tumblr media
the first part is directed at luke specifically as her main co-writer, while the rest is about how all three of them let her down. it couldn’t be more clear that the reason she’s so betrayed is that a) they’ve made her feel like julie and the phantoms is less important to them than sunset curve and b) they’ve failed to consider her point of view or empathize with how important the show was to her.
which is why singing sorry a bunch of times, though charming, leaves her unmoved. and it’s why booking another gig actually makes her angrier. a gig the boys have deemed important enough to show up for is not a present or an olive branch to her, it’s a slap in the face. and if the boys had actually been paying attention to what she’d said the night of the dance, they could have anticipated her reaction.
but they clearly haven’t listened, so they haven’t learned how to do better or make things right. which is why this is such an important beat in the scene in the studio:
Tumblr media
hounding julie to rejoin the band, even with such nice sentiments as “you’re the best thing that’s happened to us since we became ghosts”, does nothing to address how undervalued julie feels getting stood up because, as she points out above, their ability to do what they love is very limited without her. that makes her a powerful and essential member of the band, but it doesn’t prove that they care about her, julie, the person. and you can see in the reaction shot how the truth of her words lands for all of them.
their remorseful silence gives julie the opportunity to reiterate one of the points she made the night before, and it’s important to note which part of her hurt feelings she chooses to revisit.
Tumblr media
the fact that they made the choice to pay more attention to their old music in spite of the music they were creating together is the thing that hurt her feelings the most. and, of course, her open hostility and her imagined reasons for why the boys picked sunset curve over julie and the phantoms (i.e. selfishness) puts luke on the defensive and ends with everyone leaving the scene dissatisfied.
great! okay, so here’s the part that’s bugged in the past (and the present, just. a little less so.) — in their attempt to deescalate the situation, alex and reggie give julie, and the audience, the all-important luke backstory. but like asking julie to rejoin the band with a shinier gig than a school dance flies in the face of actually making amends, so, too, does asking julie to empathize with luke’s emotional journey when the boys failed to take julie’s into account when they hurt her. only this time, it works as an olive branch.
now, i’m not saying that julie’s acting out of character in being sympathetic to luke’s pain, quite the opposite is the case. and i’m also not saying it’s bad that she does find sympathy for his situation — again, i’d argue that the opposite is true. it’s just, at the same time, it’s not a good look to force aside the young woman of color’s hurt in service of the white dude who hurt her feelings in the first place’s tragic backstory. the narrative is asking julie not to be mad at the choices luke made in the past two episodes because he’s really sad, actually.
and sure that’s an ungracious read of the moment, but i stand by the fact that it’s present in the text of the episode all the same, even with a little more nuance than i’m currently giving it credit for.
all that being said, alex and reggie do a bit to win back this highly insensitive maneuver with another stab at an apology.
Tumblr media
alex addresses julie’s comment about them knowing “how tough it’s been for her to play” by reiterating that not showing up let her down and they get that that’s a crappy way to feel, while reggie takes a crack at julie’s “our songs were good” by emphasizing that they all love being in a band and making music with her. it’s a slight step up from their sorry in the garage, but not a complete fix because they’re all still sitting with the fact that they need julie to make the most of their music and how that complicates their declarations of loyalty.
the thing that makes this attempt at reconciliation different than those prior, of course, is this line:
Tumblr media
the acknowledgement that things haven’t been fixed + the politeness + the implication that they’re willing to put in the time to earn her trust back so long as she lets them makes the apology a good enough one to accept. well, that, and:
Tumblr media
one gets the sense that if rose could actually speak to julie in that moment, she’d be reminding her the value of grace. and, of course, we know that this also serves as a reminder to julie that good things are fleeting, loss is around every corner, and holding close what you care about is important. so she does just that by letting go of her (righteous, righteous) anger and reuniting the band.
still, even though alex and reggie have had their chance to make amends, luke doesn’t get the same moment to show he’s actually paid attention to julie’s needs in 1.06. so, naturally, he starts immediately in their first scene together in 1.07.
i mentioned in my exhaustive list for “finally free” that julie picking a sunset curve song for their reunion number is a lovely, understated way for her acknowledge luke’s lost musical legacy, and i have similar feelings about the fact that luke suggests “edge of great” for their follow-up gig. it’s his first step in proving to her that he does care about the music they’ve written together with actions instead of empty apologies and misguided gestures.
by the end of the episode, though, the three of them take a step back (reggie gets points for his being, like, half a step) when they learn that, in addition to letting down julie, one of the consequences of their night chasing revenge is a ticking clock on their existence.
Tumblr media
though i understand the urge to protect julie from the alarming news that their power is going out, there’s also a lot of selfishness behind the decision. julie loses them in the end no matter what, but lying to her about it and planning to leave without an explanation shows a disregard for her emotional journey in a similar way standing her up did. in fact, this plan is basically to stand her up for eternity. not cool, guys.
naturally, since it’s luke who’s the one proposing the terrible plan and it’s luke who never officially demonstrated his understanding of how he hurt julie’s feelings by not showing up when it mattered, it’s fitting that he’s suddenly more in tune with his own feelings. and, with that, comes a new awareness of how his and julie’s feelings interact, starting with this moment in 1.08.
Tumblr media
you can see his conflict over her declaration. she’s worried without knowing just how much there is to be worried about, and that makes him sad because it’s confirmation of the fact that he’s important to her. that losing him will mean a lot of pain for her. but instead of cluing her in, he makes a conscious choice to continue withholding the information of his imminent departure. and maybe it’s such a weak deflection because he’s already starting to come to terms with how unfair he’s being to her, but even so, he’s not being a good friend when julie is showing up for him in big, unexpected ways he’d never even thought to ask for.
and again, here —
Tumblr media
— just after they’ve acknowledged that there’s a something and not a nothing between them, you can see him sober with the thought that she doesn’t know they’re about to lose each other. but it’s still not enough to move him to share. maybe because he prefers that she live with the possibility of that something when he no longer can, maybe because he’s too caught up in his own feelings about how crappy this hand they’ve been dealt by the universe is. but in any case, he keeps tight-lipped.
UNTIL.
Tumblr media
it’s seeing her excited about a future their music can’t have that finally pushes him into coming clean. and i love how subtly this demonstrates that he has been paying attention, actually, and he knows that what hurt julie the most was the feeling that their music took a backseat to his past. if he crosses over without telling her the whole, ugly truth about the mistake he made by standing her up, then he crosses over stuck in that mistake. because part of that whole, ugly truth is the beautiful realization that no music is worth making, julie, if we’re not making it with you. and he’s not quite at that particular aspect of his truth yet — he still has to experience the what if of caleb’s club to be able to make the declaration with the conviction he does — but when he finally does tell her that and means it, she’s given the catharsis she’s needed since the dance. because he’s backing up his apology with action (i.e. being willing to literally no longer exist instead of making music with someone else) and providing her with the same consideration she showed him when she rejoined the band because his loss felt more important than her anger. and reaching that level of give and take in their relationship, physically represented in their hug, finally sets them free.
so, yes. even though 1.06 is clunky and a little tasteless at times, i can acknowledge that the story manages to win any missteps back. quite poetically, honestly. all’s forgiven.

                                                             ~
“Meet and greet’s about to start!” someone called, signalling that the boys needed to head out of the room backstage and head to the meet and greet area.
“Have fun boys,” Kirstie grinned, kissing James quickly. Brad kissed you as well, heading off to meet fans, leaving you and the other girlfriends in the green room, which you had to admit, you were happy about.
You, Kirstie and Lucy got along extremely well, and it was exciting when you were all able to be backstage at the same show together, made it much less boring when the boys actually had to do important business.
You pulled your champagne flute off the table next to you, having another sip. The three of you had decided to pop a bottle open before the show, just because you could. The fizziness went smoothly down your throat, relaxing you almost instantly.
“So,” Lucy started, glancing at you. “When are you and Brad finally gonna spill the beans?”
You shifted in your seat, knowing that question was coming. The girls basically always asked you, eager to finally be able to talk about you in front of people and see cute photos on instagram.
“I’m not sure,” you shrugged. “I told Brad he can decide when he’s comfortable.”
“Totally get it,” Kirstie smiled. “I can’t wait though, you two are way too cute!”
“Agreed,” Lucy nodded. “Best couple, truly.”
You couldn’t help but blush, downing the rest of the champagne quickly, not sure if it was from nerves or excitement.
You guys put music on and began singing together, each of you pretending to be the member in the band you were dating. You laughed as Lucy made a serious face, pretending to play the bass as you belted out the lyrics, not even sounding nearly as good as Brad.
You grabbed the bottle, hoping to pour more for all of you, before realizing it was empty.
“Is there more?” you asked over the music, waving the empty bottle above your head.
“Yeah!” Kirstie exclaimed. “I think it’s out near where the meet and greet is. That table behind the curtain where we had all the snacks and stuff.”
“Do you guys want more?” you asked. “I’ll go grab it quickly.”
“Hell yeah, girl!” Kirstie said, lifting her empty glass.
That was all the convincing you needed to head out of the room, making your way to the table Kirstie was talking about. You knew the meet and greet was going on, so you had to be stealthy. That being said, stealth was pretty hard when you were a couple of glasses in and in an unfamiliar place.
You heard the chattering of fans, and the boys deeper voices greeting them. You giggled at the fact that the term “meet and greet” was so exact. You tried tiptoeing behind the curtain, the boys only a few feet ahead meeting the fans. As you weaved your way around a few chairs to get to the table, you tripped, you foot catching on a chair leg.
“Fuck!” you called out unintentionally, your hand immediately flying to cover your mouth. You hoped no one heard you.
“Y/n?” you head a familiar voice call. It was Brad, of course.
You stayed silent, hoping that if you stayed silent, he would think he was hearing things and continue what he was doing. You couldn’t interrupt the meet and greet over a stupid clumsy fall.
“One second, love,” Brad said to a fan, telling the photographer to wait for him to come back.
A head of brown curls peeked around the curtain, concern plastered over his face as he raced towards you, crouching to your level.
“Y/n, are you okay?” he asked.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” you muttered. “I just tripped, I was trying to be stealthy.”
“I don’t think you and stealth will ever mix,” he said, a laugh leaving his mouth.
“You’re right,” you sighed. “I’m fine though, just go back out there! I was just grabbing champagne to go back to the girls.”
“Okay,” he sighed. “Let me help you up at least.”
He reached his hand out for you to grab, and you happily obliged. You winced as you stood up, sharp pain in your ankle that shot up your leg.
“Ow,” you said quietly.
“What’s wrong?” Brad asked, his eyebrows furrowing together.
“My ankle hurts, it’s nothing,” you waved him off, grabbing the champagne and beginning to walk back to the green room, limping your way along.
“Y/n I think you really hurt yourself, love,” Brad cooed. “Let me carry you back to the room.”
“No!” you exclaimed too loudly. “Then people will see us.”
“Let them see,” he smiled. “I can't let you limp back there alone, fragile bottle in hand.”
“Fine,” you whined. “Only because it hurts a lot!”
He scooped you up quickly, stronger than you would have expected, and began walking away from the curtained area. You cradled the bottle in your arms, hoping to somewhat hide it from the mostly underage fans that would be in sight soon enough.
Brad turned the corner, telling the staff and the band that he would be right back, that you were hurt and he was bringing you backstage again.
“Are you okay?” Connor asked, worry spreading over his face.
“Just took a tumble,” you grinned, knowing they wouldn’t really be surprised by this fact.
You heard all the fans muttering, asking who you were, if you and Brad were dating. Phones began coming out of pockets, aiming at the two of you as Brad walked you back, humming as he went.
He nudged the door open with his foot, placing you back down on the chair you were sitting in before all of this happened. The girls immediately asked what happened, of course, and you kept the details light, knowing you’d tell them more when Brad left.
“Get back to the fans,” you told him, pushing him out of the room.
“I love you,” he grinned. “Put ice on that, I’ll be back soon.” He kissed you softly and left the room, saying bye to the girls.
“That’s really swollen,” Lucy said, staring at your ankle.
“I tripped on a chair,” you sighed. “And then I said ‘fuck’ really loud and Brad heard, then he carried me back even though I said I was fine.”
“Did people see you?” Lucy asked, eager to know the answer.
“Yeah,” you laughed. “Holding a bottle of champagne too, they probably think I’m an alcoholic or something.”
The girls laughed synchronously, Kirstie popping open the champagne and refilling everyone’s glasses.
“I’m sure they got cute pictures and will be ‘shipping’ you soon enough,” she said.
She held her glass up, you and Lucy joining her.
“Cheers!” she exclaimed. “To y/n fucking up her ankle in the name of champagne.”
“Cheers!” you all cheered, laughing as you tipped the glasses back, not caring about who saw you, or what they thought of you. All you needed were your friends, and Brad.

◟̽◞̽ LIVE FROM LONDON aka “5 TIMES LOUIS NEARLY GAVE US HEART ATTACKS AND THE ONE TIME HE RAISED OUR BODIES BACK TO LIFE” ◟̽◞̽
The hype leading up to the event was beautiful and nerve wracking, with Louis' Walls streams showing the largest gain since release week, new merch dropping (pink! So much pink! It is the color of rock n roll after all...plus it's available in sizes ranging from XS to 3XL fuck yeah, so nice), LTHQ and Veeps whipping everyone into a frenzy with a barrage of tweets, plus Louis tweeted “if you have a speaker round the house plug it in, if you're old enough get yourself a drink. This is going to be special!” (fan: if I do that my mom will kill me! Louis, basically- fuck that, do what you want!), and then he posted the set list which genuinely took my stress levels down like 90% THANK YOU LOUIS, I was able to simply enjoy the cool static-y countdown with its rainbow glitches for a few. But ofc any calm went completely down the toilet the second he walked out with a giant ass H on his chest (the first heart attack) and started singing maybe the best he's ever sung in his life?? My heart was still pounding three minutes later when he sang the softest, most gorgeous version of We Made It, standing in front of a giant rainbow wheel. The arrangements on every song were incredible (the string section? YES!). He did the best version of Through The Dark I've ever heard and that song is already my fucking favorite, That Version of Two Of Us, ACOUSTIC ONLY THE BRAVE, rock Always You, stadium rock Fearless, and we all know about his version of Beautiful War (WOW), listen do I need to list every song? I WILL DON'T TRY ME. But on top of all that-- the NEW SONG!! Copy of a Copy of a Copy is, uh, amazing?? It's just... so GOOD...so.. gestures vaguely at like... all of it. The sound! The lyrics! GORGEOUS, and he really gets into the figurative lyrical territory that he admires so much in others' songs and has said he wants to do more, I love seeing that so much and the results are just... sublime. Truly. Much chatter now about the similarity in sound to Sign of the Times, as if it wasn't terrific enough already. So much to love about it! And I even loved the inclusion of the fan videos on KMM-- they were just on the screens behind Louis, it totally worked with the general cool look of everything and didn't detract at all, and tbh Louis singing directly to the wall  of singing louies was actually so lovely and precious. In conclusion, his voice throughout was PHENOMENAL, the band were great, strings included (hire those women Louis take them on the road, please!), the sets and lighting design and direction were awesome, the whole aesthetic was just SO on point, Louis said it best-- “we smashed it”. YEAH. YOU DID.
Other things: you didn’t think I was done with THAT FUCKING H SHIRT did you? It doesn't just have a GIANT H in the middle, above that (like tags!) are five asterisks, *****. YEAH. Look familiar? Yeah to me also damnnn. So, “end it”, “Harry”, or both? Poll time! Hair update: in a combined “you always come thru for your louies” and “you fucking demon troll” moment that's perfectly Louis he DID take his hat off to show us the glorious mane but I'm pretty sure he also trimmed it before the show! And: Hot Oli is already in the rearview I guess; ah we barely knew ye, but a new photog has appeared on the scene: enter Josh Halling (prev worked with Sam Fender) taking show pics today, including a super cool one on Louis' insta. Welcome to the team? Being a better guy than Jordan is a low bar, so just try to clear that one sir? And keep feeding us those great Louis pics! And: WBK Louis likes his backstage vodka redbull (and onstage 'water' bottles), and he confirmed between songs- “the power of vodka for me mate I’m loving it!” (straight? no, gay!). And: was the CK hoodie Louis was wearing in the pre show publicity photo (thanks Hot Oli) Harry's CK hoodie? Or simply a Copy of a…. well you know. And: hey guess what-- I gotta hand it to Veeps, against all odds that stream was flawless! Plus they got rid of the chat which was probably to facilitate that but also I simply appreciated it, good call. The Genius lyrics page for Copy of a Copy of a Copy did crash after the show though so it's cool don't worry; we've still got it. And finally: lots of people are talking now about how cool the show was but do any of them matter except DMAs reposting the pic on insta with hearts?! LOVE that for Louis.
And for the aftershow we got Louis on twitter! He thanked everyone (us, the crew, the band, Charlie, the strings, veeps, “all my personal team”), and answered a Q about doing another one-- “potentially but I doubt it, wanted to make this one special so no plans at the moment to do another.” About Copy he said “it will remain in the set for the tour and live shows but not sure when/if it will be released yet” but also re inclusion on LT2 “Probably but I want to keep all my options open. Very early in the process. Enjoy the moment!”
The rest of the day was pretty slow thank god, just some prerecorded content from Liam (a wizarding world spot) and a tik tok that's just him in the dark, shirtless, reacting to a fan screaming (literally) about how he apparently got relationship advice from Liam via facetime last night. And today's daily alarm, which was actually pretty wild, Liam and Roman reading a whole long rhyming poem about waking up! Very impressive indeed, I especially like when they rhyme “santa” with “banter”, perfectly British! And then also a strange interlude of Roman talking about how to impersonate Keanu Reeves, okay.
