How can you expect people to buy stim toys from you when places like Amazon offer free shipping? Yeah some of your prices are comparable but then you add in shipping rates and its just a lot

Hi anon,

We try to keep products as cheap as we can in hopes of making them accessible, and because of that, we’d lose money on “free shipping”. In order to make up for that, we’d have to raise our prices across all our products and that would cost customers more money in the end.

We were losing money (usually over $10 an order) when we offered free shipping on $50 CAD+ and had to change that to $70 CAD.

A lot of our customers have told us they prefer buying from us because they’re supporting a small business and also an autistic owned business.

Also - our shipping rates do “max out” at the parcel charge which means that you can add as many items after that point and it won’t increase. (Maybe combining orders with friends is possible!)

If our shop isn’t for you, that’s okay. But we do have consistent customers and supporters who would prefer to buy from us than Amazon. So I’m not “expecting” people to buy from our shop, people are already buying from our shop. And we appreciate all of them.

Indie publishers: ‘I make enough money to put out books but not enough to pay myself’

Small publishers across Ontario mortgage their homes and work without pay to tell stories that give voice to the voiceless

The Ottawa chapbook and broadside publisher above/ground press was started with a simple premise: “No money is not a good enough reason not to take a chapbook.”

That’s the philosophy of rob mcclennan, the poet who runs above/ground out of his home. “I’m so used to being broke,” said mcclennan. “So I’m very aware of trying to keep the prices down.”

His awareness is useful not just from the perspective of a potential reader, but also that of a small press publisher. These are the publishers on the vanguard of discovering and promoting new or innovative voices, as well as voices from groups outside the larger master of fine arts programs that might otherwise have difficulty getting heard; they also tend to have less clout and fewer connections, which frequently leaves them scrambling for enough money simply to keep the lights on.
