Ok, this borders more on trivia but maybe YOU of all people can pinpoint the origins of this. Why did people for like 15 years begin to call the original PlayStation the "PSX" when the actual PSX was a completely overhauled JP exclusive revision of the PS2? I never got this or understood how it became a thing online.

In the marketing/preview leadup to system launch, Sony originally called it the PlayStation X (rumored to be short for PlayStation Experimental back when Sony was collaborating with Nintendo) so the magazines abbreviated it as PSX. It was the 90s, extraneous Xs were everywhere in popular culture at the time. Despite the fact that the X had been dropped from the PlayStation name by launch, gamers were already too used to calling it PSX by then thanks to the magazine and internet previews so the name stuck. It was a very early example of a meme taking on a life of its own.

Tsukasa’s a Himiko Toga kinnie. And a Pinkie Pie kinnie.

But, I thought of this thing that’s popular amongst friends, and my friends that definitely also relate to TBHK friend groups, even ones I made up.

In New Blues there are really only two main friend groups at first and one of them are called Aegean, that has Natsuhiko + Sakura + Mitsuba + Tsukasa + Amane + Y/n. ( Did I ever mention Y/n’s in this au?) I called it Aegean bc I had no other ideas and the au is called ‘New Blues’, and Aegean is a shade of blue.

This kinda has nothing to do with the kinnie thing.

Y’know when friends come up with code names, like for crushes and people they don’t like? Yeah, that’s the Aegeans.

Little scenario.

Tsukasa and Mitsuba are minding their business in Kamome’s high school building library. Mitsuba was on his phone scrolling through social media, and Tsukasa was doing homework he had, that he definitely wasn’t going to do it at home because it was Friday.

Mitsuba keeps looking up at his phone occasionally, at Tsukasa or to just gaze at his surroundings. The one time he does it though, he spots a new face in the library in between two book cases, the person looked to be trying to find a book. Because it was a library, obviously.

But Mitsuba gasped a little, and patted Tsukasa’s shoulder several times to get his attention.

Tsukasa turned off his music, Gimme Chocolate by BABYMETAL, and looked at Mitsuba.

“Hmm?”

“Oh my god, oh my god, look it’s mango!!!” He whisper-yelled.

Tsukasa looked around him, and saw no mangos, so he turned to Mitsuba confused.

“What mango-??” He said with a regularly-voluminous voice, and his best friend instantly shushed him.

The noise that they were making made the person turn to them, and smile as she walked towards the table they sat at.

“Don’t say anything Tsu.” Mitsuba whispered to Tsukasa one more time before he pretended like he was on his phone again.

Tsukasa, confusingly, continued to write on his paper homework.

“Hey Mitsuba-san, and Tsukasa-san! If you don’t mind, could I ask you guys do you know where the Sci-Fi books are?” The girl asked sweetly.

Mitsuba looked up, unnoticeably having a small blush on his cheeks.

“Ohhh, yeah! I think it’s over there somewhere, near the librarian’s desk. I’m sorry if that’s not it though..!” He laughed nervously.

He knew where the Sci-Fi section was, he reads them. ( As well as Tsukasa but he didn’t look up from his paper because he was told to not say anything )

“Oh, thank you Mitsuba-san! If it’s not there I’ll just ask the librarian. She’s a little rude though, so I wanted to avoid her..”

“Uh, yeah! I understand!”

The girl walked away towards where Mitsuba said, and Mitsuba breathed a sigh.

Tsukasa noticed the girl walking away, and turned to Mitsuba again. “Who is that??”

Mitsuba turned to him as well with a deadpan face.

“You seriously don’t remember..?”

“No.”

He facepalmed, “Tsukasa-kun, that’s Maoi, the one freshman from our gym class. ‘Mango’, remember??”

Tsukasa looked totally lost.

“No, no I don’t remember. Mango??? What?”

“God Tsukasa-kun, did you not hear me ramble about her to you last week.”

“So…. We don’t like her.. Or—“

“No we like her, at least I do! She’s kind and pretty!”

Tsukasa thought for a second before oh-ing really long and loudly.

“You like her!” Tsukasa smiled.

“Shhhhhh!!” Mitsuba shushed him, “Don’t say that out loud, what’s wrong with you! It’s just a little crush! Like a hallway one!”

“Oh, well I wish I knew about her early.”

Mitsuba looked at Tsukasa like he was a dumba**, and Tsukasa turned to his homework again. Now listening to The End by BABYMETAL and Lil Uzi Vert.

That wasn’t that long, but I thought that was a funny scenario.

Tsukasa’s friend group just comes up with code names for people, and he has no idea what they’re talking about.

I know the whole Aegean group wasn’t included but that’s ok.

Anyways, that’s it.

This cup is the visual representation of Flynn Rider. For context a girl in my ceramics class who I will refer to as L meet this guy who she beloved to had a star king resemblance to Flynn Rider. So of course L gave him this too tear compliment. She proceeded to tell Flynn that if she ever revived that compliment that she just Mary the person who told her that this. He responds to this was “now that I think about it u kinda look like repunzel”

Anyway, when L was telling me about this conversation I can to the shocking realization that this man has commitment issues. So of course I told her this. My reasoning was that she told him this compliment and how she would Mary the person who gave her this compliment, but instead of giving her this compliment he gave her a similar but different out of fear of having to marry her. She starting to argue that well Flynn had never had a girlfriend so how could he have commitment issues. Before she was like “ow wait 😅 your right 😂” Anyway this has became a running gag between me and her. And she says how if L and her boyfriend ever broke up that her plan b is Flynn.

So back to the cup. She threw this cup on the wheel but she accidentally bumped it and it half collapsed into a heart shape. And we were like you have to give this to Flynn. So the design behind it is that the cup is uneven and has minimal design to represent his said commitment issues and how he wants the credit but faint want to put to much work in to the point he becomes invested. And to top it off she signed it SG. Which stands for that short girl. This is due to the fact that L found out that Flynn and his friends have been referring to L as “that short girl who fallows Flynn around”. Which is hilarious. Of course we had to ask her whether she’s been staking him or something when she told us this. She said no. So to double check we ask “are you sure” which she replied “I don’t think so”. So anyway this is my proof that Flynn rider has commitment issues.

Hi friend! I kind of took this and ran with it 😅 here I’ve compiled a list of the codenames we have canonically and then below are what I personally think everyone else’s codenames are. (With help from my friends in the discord channel!)

Rachel- Foxtrot or buttercup

Matt- haystack (farm boy and like a needle in a haystack you can’t find him) but also I think it’s M&M because reasons

Townsend- hmmm tag along because I feel like when he went through training he followed behind everyone else so he got called “tag along Townsend”

Code Names and Secrecy

I had two related questions today on keeping things quiet in the industry, so I thought I would answer them together.

Devolver Digital left a comment under the "Return to Monkey Island" trailer saying, "You'll have no idea how hard it was to keep this secret for two years." It made me wonder, what are the precautions to keep secrets in the gaming industry, particularly when dealing with license games where people outside of the game developer/publisher are ncessarily (sic) involved with production?

Is it really necessary for studios to have "code names" for projects? What is the point?

It’s important to note that the reason for secrecy is primarily for marketing purposes. We want to keep a big project quiet until we’re ready to show it and get players excited for it. If our product is tied in with another product or IP with a big planned push at some point in the future, tipping our hand too early can lead to a cascading set of reveals we or our business partners were unready to make. For example, revealing a new mainline Pokemon game too early would spill the beans on an entire new pokemon generation, which would affect merchandise, animated series, and so on. As a result, we usually put in safeguards to prevent such leaks from happening, both punitive and practical.

The first major safeguard is just the boilerplate Non-Disclosure Agreement. We all know that revealing things too early costs money and time - it hurts the effectiveness of the company’s marketing campaigns, so all employees must sign NDAs where they promise to protect the company’s trade secrets under penalty of being held liable for any damage their loose lips may cause. I can talk about the design principles in abstract, but I can’t talk about the specifics of the game I’m working on. Everybody who goes into the office has to sign an NDA, even visitors and family members. 

There are other practices put into place to protect against this beyond the NDA catch-all. Project code names are pretty standard operating procedure just so developers don’t accidentally spill the beans in public settings or to coworkers who aren’t yet read in, like when discussing work topics over lunch in a public space.  At one point, before the announcement of the PS4 and XBone, my studio had to use code names for those console versions of the games in order to keep even internal developers not on those teams in the dark about what was going on. This was not because our publisher/employer did not trust us, but because Sony and Microsoft were legally covering themselves and requiring this compliance from my employer. 

Beyond this, it’s also possible that the project itself can change over time. Just because the final result is a Monkey Island game doesn’t mean the project initially started out that way. It might have been another game idea entirely that had the Monkey Island IP brought on later in the development process. The project still needs a name, even if all of the details aren’t yet set in stone. That’s where code names come in.
