Wednesday 100: At the End of the Day

Jamie came inside, stopping just long enough to discard his mud-laden boots before going upstairs. He couldn’t wait to relax beside the fire with Claire, but he had one more task. He pushed open the door, setting sight on two red heads peeking out from the blanket, pretending to sleep.

“Och, my lasses are asleep already, I s’pose I’ll head downstairs…”

“Da! We’re no’ truly asleep!” Faith and Bree bound out of the bed and clung to each of his legs.

“Aye, but ye should be ye wee sticklers,” Jamie smirked at them, “come, tell me what ye did today.”

How do you think Outlander would change if Faith had lived?

Hmmm. I think it wouldn't have changed much right away. Jamie would still have dueled Randall and been sent home. They were done in Paris.

I also think Claire would still have followed Jamie to war. As much as it would hurt to leave Faith, they would have known she was safe at Lallybroch with Jenny and Ian. However....I do not think Claire would have went back through the stones before Culloden. Not without Faith. Jamie would have certainly sent Claire home at that point. She was a wanted woman and pregnant, and the end was looming for both Jamie and the Rising. It's possible that Claire could have gathered Faith and hurried to the stones, believing Jamie dead, but the roads would have been very dangerous for her. I think it is more likely she would still be at Lallybroch when Jamie arrived injured.

Claire would have nursed Jamie for months after that, but it wouldn't be long until she would have to go into hiding with him or risk being recognized and arrested. She would be heavily pregnant, and would have to leave Faith in a starving family. I think Jamie would have forced her to go back then (as long as Faith could travel), preferably before Brianna was born. His desire to protect and provide would have meant sending Claire and Faith through the stones.

The difference is that this time Claire would have known Jamie was alive when she left. She would have known to look for him. She wouldn't have been able to tolerate Frank, which would mean a very difficult life for her and her girls. Likely, medical school would not have been possible for her, but maybe they could have worked out a way for Jamie to leave messages like they did in MOBY. Likely Claire wouldn't have returned a lot earlier than she did in the books because the girls would still need to be independent.

Brianna would have grown up knowing about Jamie from both Faith and her mother. It would have been a whole different life for her and she would probably have never met Roger.

So. Faith living meant Faith living. It meant Claire would have experienced Jamie as a father, shared being a mother with Jenny instead of sharing grief, had a little hand to hold as she stepped through the stones again. Faith living means Brianna would have a sister. Brianna would have known everything about Jamie. It means Claire would not have been so lonely after going back through the stones because she could be open with her girls. She would probably have lived in England with them and continued nursing. After Claire went back to Jamie, Faith and Brianna would have seen the newspaper notice about the fire and came back together. The joy at the little family's reunion would have been unblemished by Bonnet. After a time the girls could have chosen whether to stay or return to the future.

I think it would have changed everything. That Jamie would've sent Claire back to Lallybroch with his men, no G or William.

for anyone too young to know this: watching The Truman Show is a vastly different experience now, compared to how it was before youtube and social media influencers became normal

before it was like, "what a horrifying thing to do to a human being! to take away their autonomy and privacy, all for the sake of profits! to create fake scenarios for them to react to, just to retain viewership! to ruin their happiness just so some corporate entity could harvest money from their very humanity! how could anyone do something so evil?"

and now it's like, "ah, yeah. this is still deeply fucked up, but it's pretty much what every influencer has been doing to their kids for a decade now. probably bad that we've normalized this experience"

Claire and Jamie were putting Faith and Brianna to bed, tucking the sheets tightly around and beneath them as they always did.

“We dinna want to go to bed!” Faith whined, supposedly on behalf of her and her sister.

“Oh you don’t, do you?” Claire challenged their eldest daughter as she gestured to Brianna whose eyes were already falling shut as a sleepy smile resembling her father’s appeared.

“Fine, I dinna! Da, will ye tell me a story?”

“Now then a leannan, yer mam says it’s time for bed.”

“Just for a minute?”

Jamie looked at Claire and she relented.

I have missed drawing them!#Ah...the contrast between how the flashback ended (cold and distrustful) to how wwx wakes up (warm and watched over)...#The gap between the past and present is very important. Not just in this story but in our lives too.#The past can still hurt and it doesn't just go away with time as some say. It is the power of realizing that things have changed.#We can't get the good back. The bad memories have concluded. Those live somewhere else now.#It is hard to realize that you have to live for today and tomorrow. The past is so loud.#For WWX it is realizing that despite the mistrust in the past - He really does have faith that LWJ will be there for him.#It is the reflection of knowing that you changed and will keep changing and that change is good and kind sometimes.#But more importantly...and this I really do mean with all my heart:#It will all end up okay in the end. Even after the worst day. The most painful losses. You will get through it.#What feels like a breaking point is truthfully just another step you have to take. You'll get through it even though it feels like the end.#There are wonderful things you have yet to see. Friends you have yet to meet.#Even if it hurts so badly...one day it just aches.
