My 2023 in Mandopop/Chinese music (update & recs)
Tumblr media
It’s been too long since I last shared some music recommendations/updates on what I’m listening to! Admittedly, I haven’t been discovering as many new artists because I’m busy listening to 薛之谦 on repeat. But we'll focus on the new.
You can check out my Spotify playlist featuring these songs (plus bonus ones). In addition, I’ve included YouTube links below.
五月天 / Mayday 五月天 is a legendary band, so of course I knew of them and had heard a few of their songs over the years. But I never proactively sought out their music until recently. I still haven’t had time to dive into their back catalog, but I’ve already found some songs I really love.
《我又初恋了》 I actually really didn’t like this song the first time I heard it, but it wormed its way into my brain. It’s just a lot of fun! Non-serious songs can be good too.
《转眼》 My favorite 五月天 song <3. I’m probably too young to fully appreciate the lyrics, but they make me feel so nostalgic and bittersweet, like transitioning to a new chapter of life and leaving the old behind.
《因为你 所以我》 This song didn’t stand out to me at first, but it grew on me! I caught myself humming it a lot. It‘s kind of corny, but it sounds so full of hope.
陈奕迅 / Eason Chan I first started listening to 陈奕迅 a couple years ago after my Album a Day August challenge, but I’ve found that his music has grown on me over time. I believe I’ve only mentioned him once before, so I thought now was a good time to highlight my favorite of his songs.
《之外》 This is probably my favorite 陈奕迅 song. The lyrics convey a sense of hopelessness, but the overall song has a smooth, light sound.
《娱乐天空》 You know a song is good when it’s over 6 minutes long but feels like it flies by! It makes me want to get up, get moving, and be productive.
《烟味》 This song is dramatic, and I love it for that. Also has a hint of orchestral flavor.
《淘汰》 One of 陈奕迅’s most well-known songs—for a good reason. It has big Cpop ballad vibes but is definitely livelier.
白举纲 / Bai Jugang You’re going to notice several mentions of 披荆斩棘 in this post. That’s where I “met” 白举纲. I instantly liked his voice and loved seeing him with his “brother” 高瀚宇 and “dad” 张晋! You may also see his music under his English name, Pax Congo.
《被动失控》 This is the only song on the list you could headbang to.
《Shy Boy》 I love this song because it’s cute and includes a children’s rhyme that I learned as a kid: 找啊找啊找朋友 找到一个好朋友.
苏诗丁 / Su Shiding At some point last year I did a one-month free trial of Apple Music. It was an interesting experience because the recommendations were very different from what Spotify tends to show me. I’m glad Apple Music led me to 苏诗丁!
《LUCIFER(傲慢宗罪)》 All I can say is that this song exudes coolness and confidence. It also has a fair bit of English, but honestly I had to look up the lyrics to tell what some of it was.
《梦幻病》 This song is from the same album. It’s dreamlike but gets more frantic as it builds. Overall, it’s just a bit…unsettling.
队长 / Young Captain I learned about 队长 from a random post on Instagram about his concert in Malaysia. I think these songs might have gone viral on 抖音 or something. I was surprised I liked them so much because they both have some rap (I’m not a rap fan), but it was love at first listen.
《11》 I love how this song builds towards the end. I spend the whole song waiting for the crescendo, and it’s great payoff.
《楼顶上的小斑鸠》 This song is like the slightly mellower sibling of the one above. But I ended up liking this one even more.
金志文 / Jin Zhiwen 金志文 was another artist who Apple Music recommended to me. I definitely need to explore his discography more but haven’t had the chance to do so yet. But he has some good stuff so far!
《自娱自乐》 Smooth and relaxing but in a fun way. Simple and no-frills but will put a smile on your face!
《远走高飞》 This one feels like enjoying the breeze on a beautiful sunny day. I also enjoy the duet with 徐佳莹 version.
163braces 163braces started out as a YouTuber posting song covers. I have watched a couple of her covers, but they didn’t leave much of an impression on me. I was pleasantly surprised by her foray into original music. I look forward to hearing what she does next!
《控制》 The song I would want as my “soundtrack” if I were a video game character. It’s energetic and loud.
《murmur》 Honestly this song is pretty similar to the first one. Sometimes I have trouble distinguishing them. But hey, if ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
小鬼 / Lil Ghost 小鬼 did what I can best describe as “pulling an MGK” by going from more rap to kinda pop-punk? That MGK album was my guilty pleasure when in came out, so I’m all for 小鬼’s new direction.
《Last Day》 This song really gave me MGK vibes. It’s about half in English, but I often don't even notice when he switches between languages.
《不良少年》 I just know I would have loved this song so much in high school. It’s an angsty teen anthem.
《为明天写封信》 I can totally imagine this song playing at the end of a 2000s teen movie! Maybe while showing a montage of the main characters graduating.
《无所求必满载而归》 by 陈粒 / Chen Li This is technically cheating because I have recommended 陈粒 songs before, but it was at least a couple years ago. I heard this song covered on 披荆斩棘的哥哥 and immediately looked up the original. Honestly I should have known it was a 陈粒 song because you can totally tell it’s her style.
《轻红》 by 曹杨 / Young I keep coming back to this song! It’s from a drama soundtrack. I was super surprised the first time I listened to it because I thought it was going to be a typical ballad based on the first ~45 seconds or so—it wasn’t. There is also another version by 陈雪燃 (the king of cdrama OSTs). But I actually prefer the 曹杨 version.
《时光机》 by 吴克群 / Kenji Wu I was introduced to 吴克群 via 披荆斩棘2. He was instantly one of my favorite contestants after his team’s amazing 《新地球》 performance (check it out). This song is bouncy and a little dreamy. I kinda want to hear a remix with Harry Styles’ As It Was. I just wish it were longer than 3 minutes!

i have to know - as a disco elysium fan who didnt do disco, what would you say is essential disco listening for me?
I'm hugely behind on the asks, but I have to answer this one, because I'm going to answer a connected but completely different question, and then maybe then loop back to you. I'm just looking for an excuse to ramble, and do the writer equivalent of a warm-up sketch (i.e. waste time).
My apologies.
If you wake up and decide that you want to get into a whole genre of music, there's basically two tactics.
(There's also the "Why would anyone care to get into something they don't care about", which is one of the few things I have a "There's two sorts of people..." response to - those who when presented by something unknown either think "why should I know about that?" or "why don't I know about that?" I'm the latter, and it's served me well.)
The first tactic is simple.
Jump on a genre with Best Of in the title and follow your pleasure response. Here's a Spotify one. What interests you? What excited you? What makes you laugh? Probably explore more of that. If not, indulge widely, and see what sticks. At a glance, Disco playlists seem to have the problem of most playlists, in that strictly not everything on it is disco per se. For example, Dancing Queen strictly speaking isn't a disco song - but it's a song about disco, in every way. But if anything has found its way on a playlist, it's found its way on for a reason.
In your case, you're interested in what Disco resonates with Disco Elysium. Which I've bought for C, but not played, but I'm aware of in a "if I was still a games journalist, this is clearly one I would write a lot about." I spent years writing about Planescape Torment, and I know a spiritual successor when I see one.
This makes me think the area you want is basically the classier end - the big bleak emotions, the chilliness, the control, lonely on a dancefloor, lonely everywhere, oh-so-much cocaine, and - to steal Paul Lester's line - glass mountains on fire.
Which leads back to the second way of getting into a genre of music - which is to hit a major artist, and hit them hard.
When asked about "how shall I get into a band" my advice is actually the opposite of what I'm about to give. If you just want to get into a band, get Best Of, see what tracks you like, then go to the albums they're from. But if you're trying to get into a whole genre of music, that's a more serious endeavour, and may reward the opposite approach.
Basically pick a key album from a key band, and get into it, and grow from there. Read about the band - you don't need much, but a little helps. Learn how to listen to what their tracks do. And then you use that band as the single point of knowledge you have to orientate yourself to everything else you listen afterwarads.
There's a huge danger to this - basically, no-one is more ignorant than someone with a little knowledge. You have to be aware that you are the person who knows a bit about Boss Baby, and using that to get into things other than Boss Baby.
The strength is that it's a more holistic, lived in knowledge than just skimming the surface. You understand the music better as an artifact of their times, made by people, responding to their specific situation - which adds different flavours to your appreciation of it. Sure, your own response and how it finds a place in your life is always the thing which over-rules anything else - but the more you can listen for, the more you can hear, the more you can get from a work of art.
Anyway - I'm telling you to go and listen to Risque by Chic.
Tumblr media
Chic are basically fucking awesome. If you don't know Disco at all, the opening Good Times chilly ironic take on American late-seventies culture is a great and (I suspect) Disco Elysium relevant intro. You'll know it as a sample, if nothing else, and the eight minutes version that opens Risque is a great way to think about it as both music for dancing (it is endless) and music for listening (it is boundless).
I got Risque as Paul Lester went to bat for it so hard in the Unknown Pleasures book the Maker stuck on the cover in 1995 (it was covering 20 albums that had fell out of the critical conversation, and it absolutely changed the dirction of my listening in the period). Here's Lester writing about Risque more recently for a taste, as the original piece doesn't appear to be online. I just read it in my copy, and it's a burst of love, describing it Disco as music about love - never sex, only love, and mainly love that is denied. That seems solid, at least for the best of chic.
Risque is the Chic album that Lloyd from Phonogram would have been listening to, certainly. I know I did.
(Plus At Last I Am Free from C'est Chic, obv)
There's a lot of Chic to listen to - their own work, especially in the period, and all their productions. Their work with Sister Sledge is of particular import - Lost In Music was one of the working title for Phonogram, and you can see and hear why. They're also the Disco band whose influence is perhaps most obvious in other bands. Everyone liked Chic. No Chic, no Orange Juice, no Orange Juice, no Smiths, etc.
Sister Sledge was the first live band I was at. My mum went to see them when she was eight and a half months pregnant. The temptration to say I'd have heard Lost in Music then and sold is tempting, but ahistorical - it's well before their work with Chic.
Anyway - get into Chic. It'll make your life better - and when your life isn't better, it's a superior context to lose yourself.
However, to go back to your question, as a Disco Elysium fan, I'm not sure it's actually THIS Disco you're looking for.
How about Disco Inferno?
Tumblr media
Not Disco at all, but most like itself than anything else, which sounds like what I understand about Disco Elysium. right?
(DI Goes Pop is the starting place)

Still Into You
Written By: Taylor York & Hayley Williams
Artist: Paramore
Released: 2013
A very upbeat and happy number off their fourth studio album, Paramore, that seems to wrap up lead singer Hayley Williams and lead singer of band What’s Eating Gilbert/New Found Glory guitarist Chad Gilbert’s relationship. Still into You is the ninth track on the album and the second to be released as a single. Still Into You peaked at No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100, at the time the second-highest a Paramore song had ever reached. Hayley talked about its commercial success when the song was played during her hosting appearance on the Sirius XM Hits 1 Weekend Countdown: “This song, I’m so so happy that this song is getting played on the radio. It’s probably my favorite Paramore song that we’ve ever written, actually. It’s about commitment to that one person that you just fall in love with and you have to just choose and you have to work so hard to stay in love. It’s not an easy task. It’s not a walk in the park, if you will.”
[Verse 1] Can't count the years on one hand That we've been together I need the other one to hold you Make you feel, make you feel better It's not a walk in the park To love each other But when our fingers interlock Can't deny, can't deny you're worth it [Pre-Chorus] 'Cause after all this time, I'm still into you [Chorus] I should be over all the butterflies But I'm into you (I'm into you) And baby even on our worst nights I'm into you (I'm into you) Let 'em wonder how we got this far 'Cause I don't really need to wonder at all Yeah, after all this time, I'm still into you [Verse 2] Recount the night that I first met your mother And on the drive back to my house I told you that, I told you that I loved ya You felt the weight of the world Fall off your shoulder And to your favorite song We sang along to the start of forever [Pre-Chorus] And after all this time, I'm still into you [Chorus] I should be over all the butterflies But I'm into you (I'm into you) And baby, even on our worst nights I'm into you (I'm into you) Let 'em wonder how we got this far 'Cause I don't really need to wonder at all Yeah, after all this time, I'm still into you [Bridge] Well, some things just, some things just make sense And one of those is you and I (Hey) Some things just, some things just make sense And even after all this time (Hey) I'm into you Baby, not a day goes by That I'm not into you [Chorus] I should be over all the butterflies But I'm into you (I'm into you) And baby, even on our worst nights I'm into you (I'm into you) Let 'em wonder how we got this far 'Cause I don't really need to wonder at all Yeah, after all this time, I'm still into you [Outro] I'm still into you I'm still into you

Iris
Written By: John Rzeznik
Artist: The Goo Goo Dolls
Released: 1998
“Iris” was written for the 1998 film City of Angels starring Nicolas Cage. John Rzeznik explained: “When I wrote it, I was thinking about the situation of the Nicolas Cage character in the movie. This guy is completely willing to give up his own immortality, just to be able to feel something very human. And I think, ‘Wow! What an amazing thing it must be like to love someone so much that you give up everything to be with them.’ That’s a pretty heavy thought.” “Iris” eventually became one of the Goo Goo Dolls' biggest and most recognizable hits, eclipsing the movie it was written for.
[Verse 1] And I'd give up forever to touch you 'Cause I know that you feel me somehow You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be And I don't wanna go home right now [Verse 2] And all I can taste is this moment And all I can breathe is your life And sooner or later, it's over I just don't wanna miss you tonight [Chorus] And I don't want the world to see me 'Cause I don't think that they'd understand When everything's made to be broken I just want you to know who I am [Instrumental] [Verse 3] And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming Or the moment of truth in your lies When everything feels like the movies Yeah, you bleed just to know you're alive [Chorus] And I don't want the world to see me 'Cause I don't think that they'd understand When everything's made to be broken I just want you to know who I am [Instrumental Break] [Chorus] And I don't want the world to see me 'Cause I don't think that they'd understand When everything's made to be broken I just want you to know who I am [Chorus] And I don't want the world to see me 'Cause I don't think that they'd understand When everything's made to be broken I just want you to know who I am [Outro] I just want you to know who I am I just want you to know who I am I just want you to know who I am

Old Song I Know
Tumblr media
I consider the music playing in my car to be a critical part of the experience for my passengers when I’m driving for Uber/Lyft.
I’ve had thousands of people in my back seat, and trying to ensure that whatever song is playing when they get in my car appeals to them is no easy feat. Whether they are with me for 3 minutes or 2 and a half hours, I want that time to be as enjoyable as possible. Often a passenger is heading somewhere undesirable, like work, and other times they may just be having a bad day. If possible, I want to help them escape for a few moments.
The first couple of weeks I did Uber/Lyft, I didn’t have anything playing in my car. I was still navigating the whole process and I wasn’t sure what was normal or comfortable. In hindsight, the silence was probably pretty awkward for those early passengers. At some point, I began putting on a local radio station that played the most current and popular music. That was okay, but then I found that after a couple of years I was still listening to the same songs 9 or 10 times in a single day. More often than not, songs I hated. I decided there had to be a compromise to where I wasn’t spending my entire workday trapped in a car listening to what I considered to be insufferable music. I made a playlist of just the popular songs I didn’t hate and began using that. It worked for a while, but then I grew tired of it as well. Eventually, knowing that on some level 80’s music appeals to most people, I threw together a playlist of instantly recognizable and upbeat songs like “Take On Me” and “Beat It.” It proved to be a pretty successful move, and passengers would regularly hum or sing along to artists like Prince or Don Henley, while in-between rides I would serenade the empty space with The Outfield or Depeche Mode.
About a year ago, I started producing a 90’s themed podcast and YouTube channel. (the90sweekbyweek.com, thanks for asking!) While deep diving into the music of that era, which is far more representative of my formative years than the 80’s, I decided to switch to a 90’s Uber/Lyft playlist. As I watch people my age reminisce over a song or a moment they associate it with, I’m offered a sense of shared nostalgia. For instance, I had a passenger the other day talk about a tour they recently attended that included the band New Edition. While New Edition itself is more closely associated with the 80’s, they spawned several acts that are considered quintessential 90’s. In this case, the song “Poison” by Bel Biv Devoe had come on while they were in my car. “Poison,” by far, elicits some of the most positive reactions from my passengers. Rightfully so. I’ve heard it a thousand times in the past year and still haven’t gotten tired of it.
Selecting songs from the 90’s to put into a playlist for an extremely diverse group of random people is a lot harder than it may seem. Especially when you’re trying to find music that you yourself don’t hate or will get burned out on quickly. Obviously, if you’re trying to bring someone’s mood up or give them a positive experience, you can’t just go with what were considered the most popular songs of the 90’s. Many of them have inappropriate lyrics or intense musical arrangements, and others tend to be too mellow or melancholy. In addition, what I consider to be the best songs of the 90’s may not be the best choices for an Uber/Lyft ride. I long considered Pearl Jam’s song “Black” to be my favorite of any era. After years of playing it over and over, I’m not as high on it as I once was, but still consider it a vital part of any 90’s playlist I’m making for myself. Honestly, every song off the “Ten” album could go on a 90’s playlist and I’d consider it acceptable. Not a single song on that album, however, has made it on my Uber/Lyft 90’s playlist. I just don’t see them helping anyone’s mood for the amount of time I’m taking them wherever they are going. On the other hand, “Jump” by Kriss Kross or “Fantasy” by Mariah Carey have a pretty high success rate.
Sometimes, after I’ve listened to a song for the hundredth time, I start to question my decision to include it in the first place. And I’m not going to lie, “Ice Ice Baby” is still in rotation, but every time it comes on, I get a little embarrassed. God forbid that anyone who doesn’t know that I compiled a list of popular 90’s songs think that I just chose to listen to Vanilla Ice on my own accord. I’m not judging anyone that chooses to express their inner Rob Van Winkle on a regular basis, he’s just not real indicative of anything I choose to associate with. Another example of a song on my current 90’s Uber/Lyft playlist that I second guess is “So What’Cha Want” by the Beastie Boys. It’s one of my favorites on there, but with such a heavy beat and staticky vocals, I wonder if the appeal is broad enough for the myriad of people entering my car. Conversely, while it’s also currently in rotation, I fear that “Plush” by Stone Temple Pilots has a tempo that is too slow to bring or keep people’s spirits up.
It's difficult to separate your affinity for certain songs and the memories you attach to them from the unknown experiences of others. Especially complete strangers. I’m constantly questioning and refining my 90’s playlist. Imagine you are getting in an Uber or Lyft, and the driver is playing 90’s music. If you are looking to be in a festive or positive mood, what songs would you want to hear? What songs would it be hard not to smile at or begin humming along to? Feel free to leave your thoughts and suggestions in the comments and thanks in advance!
And now…a haiku:
though the songs differ
everyone has a soundtrack
if you will listen
“Where words fail, music speaks.” ~ Hans Christian Andersen

It’s official, I hit 100 followers! :D thank you all so much for all of the love and support- it means so much to me 🩷 my silly little summer hobby is growing up *wipes tears* they grow up so fast.
I’ve been saying for a while that I would do a little q&a/ “get to know me” type of thing once hitting 100, so here it is! Thank you to everybody who sent me questions! I wasn’t sent too many (which is totally fine lmao) so I’ll just share a little bit about myself with each one :)
How have you been?
I’ve been great! Stressed due to school, but great :) I love doing this- being able to write and share it with all of you- so it’s a nice escape from my workload.
What's you're favorite subject?
When I was in high school, it was definitely art classes. I actually almost went to an art school!
What's your major (only if you feel comfortable ofc!)
I’m a journalism major! I spend lots of my free time writing. Good thing I love it so much lol. I’m in my second year of college, and I truly don’t think I would’ve rediscovered my love for writing if it weren’t for my major
What's your favourite non-kpop genre of music?
I’m a big fan of alternative, “pop punk,” pop, and boy bands. Some of my favorite artists outside of kpop are I DON’T KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME, Fall Out Boy, Harry Styles, 🩷Big Time Rush🩷, Ricky Montgomery, Rina Sawayama, and I’ve recently been getting back into Dodie Clark
footnote: I’ve been wanting to write a “Xdinary Heroes as Big Time Rush songs” for months, but I have no clue what that fandom overlap looks like? Idk that might be one I write just for the hell of it
What are some other kpop groups I’m in to?
I listen to a lot of different groups (my kpop playlist is LONG) but my other favorite groups alongside xh are Stray Kids, Seventeen, Shinee, and Ateez!
for anyone wondering, my biases are Seungmin, Dino, Key, and Mingi 👍🏻
When it comes to xh, I’ve been a fan since the announcement of Hello, World! I wanted to try to get into kpop right before Happy Death Day came out, but I was too intimidated. I followed a few groups I wanted to get into, but nothing ever came from them. Then, through the magic of ✨Instagram algorithm✨ I found a clip of Jooyeon from the Happy Death Day music video. I watched the mv, thought they seemed cool, followed them on Instagram and then completely forgot about it! That summer, a friend of mine introduced me to skz, and the algorithm did it’s thing again and xh was back in my feed announcing Hello, World! They were the first group I loved a really got into- and now the rest is history!
What's your favourite colour?
Purple! :D 💜
If you could be a patch of grass anywhere in the world, where would you want to be?
I love this question??? I’m thinking the Swiss Alps. I just feel like the Alps would be so beautiful. Like, imagine being a blade of grass on a hillside of the Alps? Idk it just seems amazing
Do you watch any anime?
I do! My favorite anime is Hunter x Hunter :) I’m terrible at watching new shows and movies, so I’ve only seen a handful of them. The most recent one I watched was My Happy Marriage. I don’t typically do romance animes, but I LOVED this one! Definitely check it out if you’re looking for something new
I think I’m gonna stop the questions here. Like I said, I didn’t get that many, so I just chose a few that were sent in. Thanks again for sending them 🫵🏻🩷
This feels silly to be geeking out about, but I really am happy that you all are here and like what I’m doing. It’s always been a dream of mine to make something for people to enjoy, and this is my silly little way of doing that. Thank you so much for the support! More to come soon :)

Flake's podcast - Crying /Weinen
podcast on 2023-05-09, the YT link also has the songlist in the description 🌺
youtube
'Weinen' this time, translated into english as Crying, but as Flake mentions, Crying can be both the kind with tears and 'shouting'. But he too would translate it as Crying, like at the very start where Flake starts a long 'Cryyyyy Baby' (tee dum dum) 😊 as an introduction by the song by Janis Joplin, he even sings along with Janis's intro for a few notes 😊
Right at the very beginning also an offhand remark, which has nothing to do with the topic, about his friend Paulo back in the old days singing a song in the schoolyard that Flake didn't know (Paulo had all kinds of different albums) and only years later found it which song it was. When they play and record a new song with the band, Flake heard the music so often that he doesn't even need to hear it anymore, because he's got it all in his head, but with Paulo's song he didn't know the musicand couldn't make sense of the song 🌺
Flake's playlist today feels a little shorter than usual, but i think it's because there are several longer songs on it, including, from 0h08 two Rolling Stones songs, and at 0h58, almost traditionally for Flake's podcast, a song by Die Ärzte 'Und ich weine' (Flake mentioned in an earlier podcast that Die Ärzte seem to have a song for every topic he comes up with 😊).
A very untranslatable phrase at 1h24 when he mentions he would like some German artist would make an album with songs just for kids (just like Johnny Cash did, who he plays right before), and says he already has a great bit of potential lyric from his daughter who told him "Sitzt ein Kuckuck auf ein Baum, kommt ein Hai forbei. Der sagt 'Kuckuck' zu dem Kuckuck, der sagt 'Hi' zum Hai" (which indeed has a great ring to it to use in a kid's song). Right after, Flake follows with a quote from 'our guitarist Paul' who said "Ich hab dich so lieb, aus Zeitungsvertrieb" (which i guess might have been 'Zeitvertrieb' (passtime), because now it translates to "I love you a lot as newspaper distribution" 🤔), which Flake thinks is 'Total Geil' as a poem, but he thinks Paul might just have reading an advertising slogan on a truck 😄 (by the way, i can confirm that German trucks often have great slogans on them 😊). And friend Paulo (another mention for him) made a short poem "Mein Name ist 'Na und'. Ich bin nicht ganz gesund" (it sounds weird in translation, so i'll skip it 😄), which Flake thinks it's so great he could almost cry. And so we are back on topic 😊
The duality in the word 'Cry' is shown best through the song by german singer-songwriter Bettina Wegner 'No woman no cry' (at 0h32), and because i really liked it, i found you a version of it on YT

Now i hear you thinking "uhm... notafraidofetcetc...did Flake maybe mention Rammstein a little bit somewhere?" 😊 why yes, he did 😊 After abt 0h23) the song 'Marmor, Stein und Eisen bricht' by Drafi Deutscher (in Germany a very well known song), which has the words 'Dam, Dam' as a sort of countervocal, well those words were considered as the title for 'our last album that didn't get a name' (which is obviously the Untitled album, i think Flake forgot for a minute that they published another album after that 🌺 'Letzte' (which is the phrase he uses) can mean Latest and Last, but as we know now it was neither...but i digress). They did use the 'Dam dam' quote in the song 'Puppe' as in 'I tear the head off the doll, dam dam' because they thought it sounded perverse in the Marmor Stein und Eisen song, the used it for the perversion in Puppe. But in the end 'Dam Dam' wasn't used as album title, Flake muses "when i like something, it's a sure sign that 4 or 5 of the others won't like it".
This leads to the next song, which is 'a song by us' that has to do with 'Weinen', namely 'Wilder Wein' (which is interesting that he uses this, usually the translation of 'Wein' in this case is 'Wine', so either he's taking some liberty with the topic, or we've all been translating it wrong) (my guess is the former 😊). This is a song that Till pretty much came up with, as Flake tells us at 0h24, Till mainly makes music to impress women 😄 With 'First Arsch' he played drums, which is fine for concerts, but at parties you rarely have a drumkit at hand. However a piano often is there, so he came up with a small melody played with the left hand (not that Flake means this in a derogatory way, he really likes the song) and just with the white keys, which basically plays itself "you just have to let your fingers twitch a bit". So this is pretty much an 'impress women' song 😄. (The 'pan flute' sound in it, Flake borrowed from the Stephan Remmler song 'Vogel der Nacht', because he liked it and figured, he'd put it in 😊). Little glimpses behind the scenes of how Rammstein songs are made 🥰

1995 London Playlist (YouTube)
Alright, so I now have London playlists for the years of 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999, so it's only right that I complete this whole sequence and give you all something for 1995 too 😊. And just like the rest of these city-year playlists that I've been making, this one is also by no means a comprehensive or authoritative look at what this particular year was like for the most musically diverse metropolis in the world; but what it is instead is a totally unique and scattershot mix of a bunch of obscure and underground London-made gems from 1995 that I've come across over the years from collecting various artist comps and DJ mixes. And no city on this planet is more eclectic than London itself, thanks in large part to both its independent and mainstream open-arms embrace of electronic music writ large.
So that's what this playlist is mostly comprised of. We have a few breakbeat tunes from the likes of Tim 'Love' Lee—who founded the Tummy Touch label, which put out the terrific Groove Armada's first two albums in the late 90s—Asian underground group Loop Guru, whose "Diwana," aka "Olwana," is a fantastic piece of psychedelic Eastern spiritualism, and "The Man With Three Heads," by Fluid, aka Dominic Glynn, who is way more known for being a bigtime film and TV composer, and whose music from that realm you're guaranteed to have heard before. Then there's a couple awesome acid jazz cuts from D*Note and Incognito, with Incognito's offering, "Jacob's Ladder," being remixed by probably the greatest New York house duo of all time, Masters at Work; a nice and rare house remix by Dimitri From Paris of Bjork's "Isobel" (Bjork was living in London when she recorded that song); a piece of drum n bass by the prolific T Power and his frequent partner Shy FX; and a very difficult-to-categorize song by System 7 called "Civilization," which was mixed by Detroit techno legend Carl Craig and is probably best described as goa trance meeting electro-flavored Detroit techno 😮.
And speaking of things that can't be categorized—check out this segue, folks—to close things out, we also have a boom bap jazz-rap tune from fleeting South London duo 499, whose "Don't Categorise Me" sounds like something that could've been produced by the legendary Pete Rock himself 😌. Oh, and right before that is something light and goofy from two-tone ska lifer King Hammond, who's been in two of the genre's most famous bands, The Selecter and Bad Manners.
This playlist is ordered as chronologically as possible:
Tim 'Love' Lee - "One Word" D*Note - "The Garden Of Earthly Delights (Ballistic Barrio Boom)" Bjork - "Isobel (Dim's Enchanted Forest)" Loop Guru - "Olwana" Incognito - "Jacob's Ladder (Masters At Work Yorican Mix)" T Power - "Amber (Shy FX extended version)" System 7 - "Civilization (Carl Craig Mix)" Fluid - "The Man With Three Heads" King Hammond - "Skaville UK" 499 - "Don't Categorise Me"
And this playlist is also on YouTube Music.
So with the launch of this playlist, we start with ten songs that clock in at nearly an hour. A nice blend of a bunch of different genres and styles, and you're definitely not gonna find another look back at this city and specific year that's quite like this one!
Next week we'll be going back to a decade-genre playlist that I don't think I've updated in a *very* long time 👀.
Enjoy!
More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!

Hallo, I'm back again with another music talk!! As I said in my last one, I basically am just talking about music I like, what I've been listening to the last week and rambling. Anyways enough of that, let's get straight into it😊
Okay to start off I'm going to talk about the playlist i've mainly been listening to this week. This playlist is called 'pacify her' . It's called that because I was listening to that song while making it. I don't really know what kind of genre the music in this playlist is but I'd say they all sound really cool. While making this playlist i found an artist called 'jack of jill' her music is so good, her song 'vivica' is definitely worth checking out. In addition to 'jack off Jill' i also found another artist named 'johnny goth', his songs just sound so otherworldly i really don't know how to explain it. He has some really sick instrumental parts in his songs, i really recommend listening to him! The band 'i monster' also showed up a lot on this playlist, i've been listening to them for a while now but have discovered some new songs by them as well. I initially found this band through their song called 'who is she' . This song is really good, however I would think my favourite song by them is actually 'lust for a vampyr'. The album covers this band makes are just so good oh my life, anyways i think 'i monster' is definitely one of my favourite bands currently😊
Anyways this playlist has a lot of really good songs, it's definitely worth listening to!!
I know i rambled about melanie martinez in the last music talk but i'm going to do it again anyways😔
The closer we get to the album release the more excited I get, all the spoilers Melanie has been giving are so exciting. Her new form is looking so cool, she looked absolutely gorgeous performing at lollapalooza!! This morning she released a song from her new album early and i have to say that 'death' is actually such an amazing song. It's a bit different from what we were used to from Melanie but I personally think that the change is good. The new style compliments her vocals really nicely!
Lately with the snippets of Melanie's album having been released I've been seeing a lot of people hating on her. I think this has been happening due to her changing aesthetics and music style a bit; which is really not an excuse though. I get that it's a bit of an adjustment to move on from Crybaby especially if you grew up with her like myself but Melanie has been planning this for years now! Melanie said in an interview a few years back that Crybaby is going to evolve as a being/ soul and she's finally getting to do that with this album and I am honestly living for the dark fairy vibe that she's going with. It may be because I listen to a lot of genres compared to others but I really like how the new songs sound. They are less soft than things she's previously made but it really isn't too different. Melaine has always been weird and displayed that very clearly in her songs and music videos for years now and yet she's getting hate from people who claim to be fans only now? See I understand not liking her newer stuff, you're not obligated to; but that doesn't mean you can be such haters either. People need to learn to humanise celebrities more, Melanie doesn't deserve even half the hate she gets.
On a lighter note this album means that she will likely go on tour again meaning i may get a chance to see her perform live for the first time!!!
The song that is second from being my top listened to in my stats called 'angry' is so good oh my life. When i first went to check who the artist was and saw 'mars argo' i was shocked because i could have sworn i knew her from somewhere. Turns out she made a popular tik tok sound that goes 'welcome to my computer show, im mars argo', anyways i just thought that was kind of cool. Mars has such good vocals, I think I'm probably going to look into more of her songs soon.
To end this off I'm just going to ask for music recommendations, I listen to most genres so feel free to send in anything! If i like something enough i might mention it in my next blog, you never know🤷

I will get more drafted up over the next few days, so i can post asap! Please let me know what you think, as i am always trying to improve.
Summary: It was always your dream to be a concert photographer, and you had finally landed yourself a reputable status as a freelancer. Life, though, takes a turn when you land a job for Greta. The plan was to do the job, in and out, nothing more, but things get quite complicated when you start to develop feelings for a certain guitarist.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter 2
It had been a few years since graduation, and honestly, it had not gone totally to plan. A goal of business marketing in college and a solid 9-5 soon turned to something else. Being in music city, and away from your parents constant nagging, caused a change of heart. Suddenly, you understood what it meant to have a dream. And so, you had dropped out of college, not wanting to waste your time, and started freelance work as a concert photographer. It was hard, SO HARD, but after saving up for proper equipment, building up a portfolio, and taking every opportunity to photograph small artists that you could, you had finally built up a reputation in the industry that was catching the eye of bigger artists.
----current day----
You had just arrived at your favorite coffee shop. You ordered a chai latte, an apple danish, and found a seat in the farthest back corner away from the business of everyone chatting and walking around. Today wasn't too busy; no jobs scheduled for tonight, allowing more time to check emails and update the portfolio on your website.
You had just logged into your laptop when a certain conversation caught your attention. You had never been one to eavesdrop until something they said made you go stiff. "Yea this band is really, really good! Apparently they're from Michigan, but they blew up so much this past year!".
There was no way it was a coincidence, right? It couldn't be. You shook it off, not wanting to ponder on that and bring up old scars. The next few hours were spent answering emails and booking jobs when one in particular caught your eye.
Oh no…no, no no no. You rubbed your eyes, thinking you were losing your mind, and you clicked on the email.

   Hello, y/n
This is the social media and marketing manager for Greta Van Fleet! We have seen your work, and would love to set up a meeting with you about a few shows we'd like you to shoot! and if all goes well, we would also like to offer you a full time position! Please email us back as soon as you can to set up a meeting!
You stared at the screen, rereading it a hundred times. There was no way the boys wanted this, right? Especially Jake....after everything you had said. It had all been a mistake, he never deserved those words. But what could taking this job hurt? Do the couple of shows,  try to apologize and explain yourself, then be on your way. You needed the money, and it would give you a chance to fix things. There was no way the boys would want you to work full time anyways.

 Hello!
I would love to set up a meeting, I am actually available today if anything this afternoon works! I can make my schedule work around yours since I work completely freelance.
You pressed send, letting out a breath you didn't know you were holding. Pushing  your laptop aside you took  a bite of your snack and enjoyed your coffee, taking a break, when you heard the familiar ding of your emails. You open it to see their management already replied. WOAH that was fast.
Y/N, today works perfectly! We see that you're local to Nashville and that is where our offices are actually located! We will send you the address, and we cannot wait to see you later today! We have your portfolio website, but feel free to bring anything else you would like to show us!
W-wait, they LIVED in Nashville now too?! You slammed the screen shut, putting your face in your hands. "I wasn't ready to SEE them today, what the hell do I say?" you whispered to yourself, feeling an anxiety attack coming on. You gathered your things and left for your apartment to prepare for the meeting.
Never did you think that after 3 years the boys would want to speak to you, not after you basically told them their dreams would fail. And now here they are, successful, selling out shows. Then there's you, someone who acted high and mighty only to realize just how wrong you were and now you have to face them. So, you drive back to your apartment, allowing all your anxiety, concerns and worries take over your mind.
Will they even want to see me?

@anotherghoul666 I AM STILL CONSUMED BY THIS TRILOGY I RE READ IT SO MUCH. It has me in such a fierce chokehold. Melisande??? The Bridge Scene in the 2nd book??? THE THIRD BOOK ENDING LIKE THAT?? Keeping things vague in case anyone wants to read it and doesn't want spoilers. AAAAAAAAAA!!!!!! I've only met one other person who's read it so I am VERY EXCITED RIGHT NOW :D !!!
And here's the Music Eras of my life. Mostly. Thank you for the tag again! I should probably figure out how to do a read more on mobile one of these days.
First song/artist you remember liking: We were a pretty strict household in terms of music, so probably some kind of religious hymn of I'm being entirely honest. I was permitted whatever played on the Christian radio station. I think the first CD I ever got was Hilary Duff from a cousin!
Middle school anthem: Still not allowed much variety in music...but I had my very first crush on someone who's nickname was "Bumblebee" so when I found Bambi's - Bumblebee, I thought it was a sign.
Road Trip Must Have: Dragonstea din Tai. No explanation needed. If you can't handle me at my numa numa then you don't deserve me anywhere else on my music taste. I will be generous in case I'm traveling with a metalhead and put on the Feuerschanz version. I found them on TikTok recently and they are delightful.
Guilty Pleasure Artist: I second the opinion about nothing being "cringe", but there are a few considered so just because of the fan base around it being weird teenagers. Who cares. Teen years are for being really weird and finding out who you are so you can refine that weirdness blob into a fun personality. I got really into Vocaloid and honestly? A lot of it still hits. And (about to show my entire ass here) Homestuck music. (Gold Pilot 👍) If you know, you know and I don't have to explain myself. We have An Understanding. The Undertale OST by Toby Fox as well by extension. (Bless everyone who got us Muffet and Spider Dance.)
know all the lyrics to: The entirety of the Electra Heart album. I view Lana del Rey gays with mild fascination. Same genus, different species.
A song that makes you cry: Respite on the Spitalfields has hit different since the Ritual back in September. It came on shuffle as I left: We're leaving the city/So this is farewell/ as I merged on the interstate and the tears would not stop coming as I careened down the highway, screaming myself hoarse. How I didn't get into an accident, I will NEVER know.
A song to yell to: Amon Amarth has slowly crept their way into my playlist and I'm very fond of screaming to any of their songs in my car before I put on my "Respectable and Closed Off Worksona"... I really like Heidrun and Shield Wall! So I was really happy to see those pop up in my shuffle game!
Current favorite music video: I'm still obsessed with the animation for Autoheart's Hellbent. My gender crisis has been over for a while but that's what the beginning of it looked like back in high school.
Current favorite Band: Ghost/Sleep Token/ Amon Amarth/Please don't make me narrow it down any further.
If I had to listen to one song for the rest of my life: That would suck. Do I really have to answer it? Alright fine. EXEC_FLIP_ARPHAGE/. - Shikata Akiko from the Ar Tonelico 3 soundtrack. Only because there WAS a period of time where I listened to it on repeat for a week straight. It's my happy song.
Stuck on repeat: Moscow - Autoheart, because it's the designated song of a very fluffy SwissAlps fic I have about 700 words on. It's also another happy song of mine.
Would Kill to see them live/Again: I have Ritual tickets so. No murder. But if Sleep Token comes my way? Watch out. Also would like to see In This Moment, Halestorm, The Pretty Reckless, Dorothy, Autoheart. Ke$ha. Mad Gallica if she ever gets her stageshow dream come true. Would like to go to more concerts in general.

The Rock Slump of 2010s and 2020s
Just listened to the ‘Rock This’ playlist on spotify followed by the ‘Rock Out’ playlist, both of which boast the best in new rock and the rock of today etc. I felt physically ill, I could only listen to a couple seconds of the five songs I listened to before my ears compelled me to skip. The songs compiled of pop songs that had features from traditionally rock artists, loud guitar with extremely soft indie voices, songs that triple j would try to pass off as rock ( even though they are definitely pop/indie- sticky fingers sounding *gag sound*), some poor imitation of a past rock genre or just the most boring song you have ever heard. WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON WITH ROCK?!/?! Maybe I’m narrow minded as to what my definition of rock is, but it's so poppy and indie? While there are bands that can be found on these playlists that have that classic rock feel mixed in with a newer sound, (Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, Bully, FIDLAR, Momma and Meet Me @ The Altar just to name few - took me half an hour to sift through the aforementioned playlists to find songs that I would genuinely add to my playlist) the majority is already popular bands (Paramore, Smashing Pumpkins), non-rock songs, tiktok formulated crap and indie-rock. I'm not trying to shit on indie rock, but to me it just doesn't have that certain something that other rock genres have, i feel as though it should just be classified as indie. Am I just a stickler, an old 67 yr old white guy crying out “back in my day”? Maybe I’m not searching hard enough or maybe we are in a The Rock Slump.
The goddamed Rock Slump has been occurring since the early 2010s, there hasn't been a decade-defined rock genre since the 2000s. I mean since the ‘creation’ of rock in the 1950s, there has been a consistent rock takeover, with it moulding into a different sound with each decade. The 1950s housed the rhythm and blues (which would eventually be coined as  rock n roll) and legends like Chuck Berry, Little Richard and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named (Pelvis). The 1960s saw the rise of the rock band and the rise in popularity of sub-genres (folk rock, psych rock). Notable mentions of the 1960s: The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, The Zombies, Cream and The Rolling Stones. Queen, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, ACDC, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Patti Smith, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Talking Heads, DEVO, Blondie, The Velvet Underground, Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, The Cure, New Order, The Stone Roses, My Bloody Valentine, Nirvana, Mudhoney, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Hole, Alice in Chains, Pulp, Oasis, Blur, Suede, Supergrass, Foo Fighters, The Verve, Silverchair, The Cranberries, Weezer, The Offspring, Green Day, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Nine Inch Nails, Limp Bizkit (lol, i had to), Radiohead, The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, The White Stripes and so many more. I mean I could keep going. These are all iconic bands that anyone who listens to music can recognise. And while there are some pretty cool post-punk acts coming out of Ireland and the UK (Fontains DC, Black Midi, The Murder Capital and Wet Leg (don't kill me, they make good music)), they're still in the early stages of their success and its still pretty bare bones when looking at whats topping the charts (of which hardly any songs are rock). I cringe thinking about the sudden pop-punk that is happening right now with MGK and Yungblud, however Good 4 U does manage to get my head banging- even though I would classify Olivia Rodrigo as a pop artist. I mean what has happened to Rock in recent years? Lots of music critics and writers chalk it up to the massive rise in hip hop's popularity in the 2010s, while I think that's part of the reason, I also think that hip hop and rock have coexisted for a long time, hip hop cannot be the soul reason for the decline in rock. Sometimes Rock and Hip Hop even have a baby (Childish Gambino).
Is Rock the new Jazz? Will it ever come back? The current state of rock as shown by the Spotify playlists that caused this whole rant is depressing. The post-punk burst is promising but the pop-punk revival is brain-grating. Please god if you're there, birth us a new rock genre, I will be forever grateful. Maybe I am just mad that I missed out on some of the best years in music or maybe i'm seeing it through rose coloured glasses because I wasn't around for the shit and have 24/7 access to the gold. Was that too visual? Maybe I'm coming down from a Daisy Jones and the Six high? Maybe i'm just that annoying that im a ‘wish they were born in the 70s’ type of person

Hi there! I don't know if you have talked about this before but… What are some of Sawyer’s favorite artists/bands/music genre? And what do you HC Ethan used to listen when he was young and what does he listen now? Besides classic music lol
Hi babe!💕 Ok, I told you I was going to be extra AF and make playlists.😂
Sawyer is mostly a pop princess.🎤👑 Her favorite band as a teen was 5 Seconds of Summer and she loves how their sound has evolved over the years. You'll see a few of her favorite 5SOS songs on this list. She's got representation from all the pop queens like Taylor, Kelly, Demi, Ariana and Miley. And of course, no pop list would be complete without some JoBro, Justin and Shawn. She's really into some female country artists like Kacey Musgraves, Kelsey Ballerini and Maren Morris. Some other noteworthy favorites artists are LANY, Lauv, Khalid, and Conor Maynard.
Classical/opera is what Ethan found helps calm his mind, but when he's in the mood, he likes to listen to some of his favorite rock artists from high school and college.🤘🏼🎸 Those include 3 Doors Down, Audioslave and Kings of Leon. He also has some favorites from the 80s and 90s like AC/DC, U2, Bush and Pearl Jam. There are some other artists like Jason Mraz and John Mayer whose songs make him think of Sawyer. And honestly, half the songs on his playlist are there because of Sawyer and what he'd like to be doing with her.😏
(Bonus thought: I was just listening to AC/DC's Back in Black on Ethan's list and had this idea. Ethan took the chief job and after a year was like "Yeah, I'm done." So he returns to the DT team. After his first day back on the team he gets in his car to head home and cranks up this song and sings along. "🎶Well, I'm bahahahack...yes, I'm bahahahack.🎵")

Out of Touch
Written By: John Oates & Daryl Hall
Artist: Hall & Oates
Released: 1984
Producer Arthur Baker, known for his recent work on the breakdancing film Beat Street, was recruited to give “Out Of Touch” a distinctly urban feel. It was released as Hall & Oates' first single from their twelfth album. The song remains the duo’s last song to top the Billboard Hot 100, holding the position for 2 weeks in 1984. It also topped Billboard’s dance music chart and appeared on the R&B and Rock charts. Overseas, it reached the top 40 in five countries.
[Intro] Hey, y'all, whoo! I don't care if you got no legs! Dance on your knees! You're out of touch I'm out of time (time) [Verse 1] Shake it up is all that we know Using the bodies up as we go I'm waking up to fantasy The shades all around aren't the colors we used to see Broken ice still melts in the sun And times that are broken can often be one again We're soul alone And soul really matters to me Take a look around [Chorus] You're out of touch I'm out of time But I'm out of my head When you're not around You're out of touch I'm out of time But I'm out of my head When you're not around Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh [Verse 2] Reaching out for something to hold Looking for a love where the climate is cold Manic moves and drowsy dreams Or living in the middle between the two extremes Smoking guns hot to the touch Would cool down if we didn't Use them so much, yeah We're soul alone And soul really matters to me Too much [Chorus] You're out of touch I'm out of time But I'm out of my head When you're not around You're out of touch I'm out of time But I'm out of my head When you're not around Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh Ooh Oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh (Out of touch) [Chorus] Ow, you're out of touch I'm out of time But I'm out of my head When you're not around You're out of touch I'm out of time But I'm out of my head When you're not around [Chorus] You're out of touch (We're soul alone, girl) I'm out of time But I'm out of my head When you're not around You're out of touch I'm out of time (Out of touch, out of time, out of touch, out of time, girl) But I'm out of my head When you're not around [Chorus] You're out of touch (Reach out for something to hold) Time But I'm out of my head When you're not around (You're too cold, girl, too cold, girl, too cold, girl, yeah) You're out of touch I'm out of time Not around [Chorus] You're out of touch I'm out of time (Out of touch, out of time, out of touch, out of time) (Out of touch, out of time, girl) But I'm out of my head When you're not around You're out of touch Yeah, I'm out of time But I'm out of my head When you're not around [Outro] You're out of touch I'm out of time…

My dad gave me an iPod full of random illegal music he'd downloaded when I was 13 and one of the albums on it was alright still by Lily Allen.
Before that I liked some of my mum's ska and new wave bands, and my dad often played Blondie and Kate Bush. And only because they played them constantly on long car journeys. Otherwise I didn't really like music, I struggle making out lyrics, probably due to auditory processing issues with my autism. I usually have to force feed and repeat music until I start to enjoy it. She was the first artist I found myself and unusually, I liked her stuff instantly, perhaps because she sounds so clear and easy to make out. Also her songs are very literal and straight forward on this album.
I must have listened to that album hundreds of times. I can go back to it after not listening to it for years and it feels like I listened to it yesterday, I know every note, every lyric, every key change.
I've never liked any of her other work as much, I liked a lot of her second album but after that I've only liked just a few songs here and there. Never got a chance to see her live either.
Then I bought Lungs by Florence and the machine and Opheliac by Emilie autumn and I moved on from Lily to indie rock and industrial gothic type music.
I'm pretty obsessive about music now, I spend ages making playlists on Spotify and always looking for new artists. I never got as into her career as I did with Florence's or Emilie's, but I do have her to thank for even getting into music in the first place.

Makari, Deserves as much Fandom as Atari
There's a sea of amazing guitarists, drummers, bassists, vocalists etc. Makari sticks out in the wave’s of hardworking, talented musicians that we all play throughout our day's via Pandora, Spotify or YouTube, to create that extra dopamine we need in today's tricky times. Eric, Matt, Kevin, John and Andy wrote some incredibly moving few songs as of recent for their upcoming album. I want to dig more into how much I encourage Makari's new album, Wave Machine, to be at the top of your 2024 playlists.
I highlight Makari because of their pure talent. I'll start with that. Listening and analyzing music over the past decade for one of my careers, I have been craving the subtle/not so subtle intricacies musicians create. The wind fortuitously blew me the name of a band I hadn't heard of yet and this band, Makari, was like an intravenous B12 shot that gave me the nostalgia of those sparking intricacies I could remember feeling when I first started to really study music.
Makari's tsunami of notes throughout their albums and drum sequencing illuminate my soul, truly. Faith I had in music was restored with my first listen to their album, "Hyperreal."
From Better to Fractals, straight through ending the 'Hyperreal' album with songs, Dashboard and Control, I was in awe. I was in awe at the connection the band members in Makari are able to communicate with their fans through guitar riffs, drum beats that'll steal your soul and vocals that range to the farthest black hole in space and back. That, is the definition of a band worth listening to.
What I find intriguing about all these apps we use daily, is the positive side of how we're all able to connect on a global level. How what we enjoy can be enhanced by suggested artists based on who's station you chose that day. Listening to Makari on Pandora, I have come across other artists that inspire the heck out of me. Strawberry Girls, Body Thief, Tillian and Hail the Sun are just to name a few.
Instagram can feel supportive in finding individual's with mutual interests. I remember this one person, vocalist, music producer Mitchel Madak, and I commented on one of Makari's post's. By him resonating with whatever I said on the photo, curiosity called and I checked Mitchel's ig because it seemed like he may be making some music too.
Listening to Mitchel Madak, reminded me of weekends with Owl City dream pop vibes on the way to the beach. With more punch and soul in the vocals, though. I might rename him as an archangel, you’ve brought me peace and ease when listening, Mitchel, thank you. Mixing in some rap to beat, you got your bases covered for a mood booster with Madak in your earbuds. Check him out on all music platforms. Links for Apple Music & Spotify here.
I asked Mitchel how Makari has influenced his own work. This is what he had to say, "Being a vocalist and even a music producer is all about getting out of one's own way and letting raw emotion come through. When listening to Hyperreal or really any Makari project, I can feel this sense of an unleashed outpouring of emotion. Especially for me as a vocalist, I admire Andy's voice and how there is really nothing he can't sing. His belting is just this blast of energy. I always feel inspired and even challenged by Makari to push myself to another level."
'Hyperreal, 'Elegies,' 'Continuum,' including the acoustic album 'Alternate EP,' are some of their discography worth many listens. These mentioned albums are medicine that help me stay sober. I found throughout my struggle with drinking (in particular, last year) that when I felt a craving, I could get in my car or sit in my room...and air guitar, then air drumming along, while sing out the notes...relating to every lyric, my craving would pass. These albums have been on my music listening platforms playing in circles. I have a lot to credit for being successfully sober...but Makari healed more than I knew I needed. Acceptance for me was found in how important it is to remain on the path of light and Makari helped me stay there.
Interestingly enough, someone I knew in high school (mind you, that's over 15 years ago for me) and I still see each other's thing's on ig. I knew her on an aquaintice basis more than me being able to say that I knew Payton well. I do know that she exudes from the inside out that she's a beautiful person. Strong, funny and caring. She now lives in Colorado with her husband. I posted "Breakers," one of Makari's tracks off their new album, so pumped to share. Payton said she really appreciated the post. Little did I know at the time how much the song helped her through. An ICU trip to the hospital with her husband, who as I do, struggles with alcoholism.
When I asked Payton generally, what her first impression was of Makari, what she had to say hit so close to home. "this song came into my life during another one of my husband's alcoholic relapses (he was in the ICU) the song just really got me through my day." I don't think she knew my struggle with alcohol, but I'm sure she saw it over the years. This article was not supposed to end up mentioning anything about being sober. When I asked Payton about Makari, she didn't know I had written of my own experience with addiction to alcohol. I generally asked, "what was the first thing Makari reminded you of when you listened to the "Breakers" song?" I didn't expect her to have experienced the same relief I felt listening through their albums, Makari's music was a perfect prescription for making productivity out of pain. I'm not a Doctor but if I was, I'd prescribe daily listen's to all things Makari.
“We’ve worked so hard on this album over the past 2 years,” Makari says. “We’re lucky to have amazing fans supporting our art, thank you.”
These interactions drive me to want to let as many people as I can know about this band. They know we’re here as fans to support them. Do all you can to support their music. Buy albums, go to shows and sing along. Raise the bar in your subscribe button pushing and “likes” because these actions can give back to the band members of Makari who gave Wave Machine their all.
2024, Wave Machine is about to drop in March and I couldn’t be more excited to listen. Everyone meditates in a different way. I meditate while I dive into music. Makari’s music center’s me. I’d like to walk into a meditation practice with a song like, "Soul Stealer" from Makari's new album. “Soul Stealer’s” intro will give you chills. And set you free.
On March 8, 2024, Makari’s album, Wave Machine will be released. The album will be my favorite new outlet. Makari continues to be my way to expel that excess of happy realizations in life. I love dancing in the car with them on my car stereo. Life hit's softer with Makari playing in my 2012 Honda Civic. Feel the energy yourselves when the album comes out in MARCH 2024!
