C'est râpé!
Rinse the vegetables and remove their skins, except for the carrot, which is full of vitamins. Grate a carrot, a piece of celeriac, a cabbage turnip and red or yellow beet into a salad bowl. You can also grate fennel. You can also add sliced salad leaves.
Prepare a vinaigrette: Place 1/4 balsamic vinegar, 3/4 hemp, flax, avocado or walnut oil in a bowl. Add salt to taste.
Serve shredded salad with vinaigrette and brewer’s yeast on a plate.
Enjoy.
This is a healthy dish because raw vegetables contain less sugar than cooked ones. All the vitamins are preserved.

Dinner 💌
Your eyes scan for John in the crowd, stopping on a muscled figure in a corner booth nestled at the quiet edge of the high end restaurant - conveniently a place that you'd wanted to try, but had neither the time nor money to enjoy a ninety pound steak. He only spots you when he registers your heels clicking amongst the chatter of the patrons, the sound of your gait something he'd inadvertently committed to memory upon your first day in his office.
"John." You acknowledge with a polite smile, heat running from your temples to the apples of your cheeks when he indicates for you to sit down beside him, and you do as you're told with a subtle nod, setting your purse at your side and producing a small leather notebook, a pen hooked over the front page for easy access.
"You're early, he notes, trying to hide the way his eyes roam over you and the floaty looking fabric of your dress, which he can't help but wonder what it would feel like between his fingers.
"Your watch is behind." You point at the dial before comparing it to your own, which you have a habit of making sure is correct down to the second, seeing as it is your job to be timely not only for yourself, but also your employer, and the rest of the task force who've unwittingly also become reliant on you to remind them of things they would otherwise forget. He gives a soft chuff before taking your wrist gently, seemingly not even realising the way he breaks the physical - professional barrier between the two of you as he focusses on changing the time on his expensive watch.
Once he's freed your wrist with a grateful smile angled down at you, you pick up the black, leather-bound menu, trying to hide the way your stomach drops and eyes widen at the frankly obscene prices of the plates here. "What makes a salad worth over sixty pounds?" you muse incredulously, trying to fill the silence that occupies the space between you and your boss.
"It's got truffle on it, Love." He notes, leaning into your space to point at the menu, not seeming to notice the way you flush beet red at the nickname.
"Still crazy." Your voice comes out as more of a petulant grumble than you'd like it to, which only makes him laugh affectionately in response. "You're not ordering the cheapest thing on the menu." John instructs with a casual dominance, raising an eyebrow in your direction when you widen your eyes at him like a deer in headlights, blinking slowly as you try and register his perceptiveness. You stutter - no - you flounder like some beached fish, face scarlet with embarrassment "I was not! - I! - What?" You squeak, completely failing at trying to seem indignant, hiding your face in your menu when he just smiles knowingly at you, placing a reassuring hand on the small of your back, which only serves to fluster you more.
"It's all paid for. Order the Wagyu and a magnum of Möet. Go crazy." He croons like trying to reassure a nervous child, never lifting his hand from your back.
His hand remains possessively in the little arch of your spine even as the men he's supposed to meet with arrive, shaking their hands and introducing you to them like you're so much more than just some secretary sent to babysit him by Laswell - which to him, you are. He's become reliant on you, not just to manage his affairs but also to brighten his days and remind him that not everyone in the world is awful, there are still people that are truly kind and good and lovely.
You do your job better than you know, not only taking minutes, but also distracting the men you dine across from with fabulous efficiency, batting your eyelashes at them in that way you don't even realise you're doing until you've practically seduced them into signing a contract they've hardly read - all whilst you enjoy your dinner and the one glass of champagne you've allotted yourself for the night.
John enjoys having you on his arm, not even realising the way you seem to automatically snuggle yourself into his side with every laugh he elicits from you. Occasionally he leans into your side, murmuring low in your ear, giving you goosebumps when his breath fans across your cheek, hand squeezing tighter around your waist. You know that there's two other people across the table from you, yet everything still feels strangely intimate despite the fact that he is very much still your boss, even outside of the workplace, you're technically still working.
As dinner winds down, the men order Bourbon and you flounder, asking the waitress for a herbal tea, totally flustered. You can't have a coffee now because you won't sleep, you can't order another drink because you're driving (and a massive lightweight) so you opt for a chamomile tea which you sip at whilst John and his colleagues finalise their deal over fancy spirits and cigars. Whilst the two men opposite the two of you speak, your boss leans into your ear, murmuring something about how lovely the whiskey is and how you should've ordered some. "M' driving." You mutter lowly to him, batting your eyelashes.
"Try some of mine then." He hums gruffly, lifting his glass to your lips, sending heat shooting down your spine as he tilts it so the bourbon floods your mouth and he floods your senses.
"S' nice."
"That's my girl."

So Many Questions Part 3
Prompt: You’re pulled in for questioning by NCIS and are quickly surprised to see your ex-boyfriend as your interrogator.
Notes: Some characters are post season 11. Some smut ahead! @kittenlittle24
Part 2. Part 1.
“I’m here to see Agent Gibbs,” you told the security officer. Making a quick call, he nodded and let you through, now adorning a spiffy visitor pass on your chest.
You entered the big orange room with a small smile, grateful this time you weren’t here to be interrogated. You spotted Agent McGee and Bishop sitting at their desks but no sight of Jethro.
“Miss L/N. Everything alright?” McGee asked as you rounded the corner and chose a chair to sit in.
“Oh yeah, everything’s good. Except for the whole phsycho investor trying to kill me. I felt too vulnerable at my office so I came here to see if I could help in any way.”
Both agents gave you a look that you could only describe as part fear part awe.
“What’s the problem?” you asked, looking around to see if there was a big spider somewhere.
“Uh, you’re just sitting at Gibb’s desk. No one sits there except Gibbs,” Bishop answered, laughing nervously. Jeeze. Is Jethro really that intimidating that his agents are scared of a desk chair?
“Well I saw an empty seat and took it. He won’t mind I’m sure. He’s not even here.”
“Oh but I am,” you heard, turning to see Jethro walking over with a cup of coffee in hand. He stopped to stand in front of you and for a few seconds you both just stared at one another, a silent fight for dominance happening. If the chair was so important, you’d let him have it.
You stood up, now close enough to him to smell his aftershave and gave him a smirk. You always loved challenging him, but loved it more when he challenged you back, as it usually ending with him on top in the literal and figurative sense.
Stepping aside, he took a seat and you moved some of his papers so you could sit on the corner of his desk. His team looked thoroughly shocked but didn’t say anything as Jethro barked at them.
“What’d you got?”
“Well Torres and Quinn are interrogating Cheryll Reznik. She told them Ian Chandler had been talking with a man named Dominic. Bishop and I were able to connect an electronic payment he sent for 10k to a Dominic Waters. Turns out Dominic had just been released from prison about a week ago for armed robbery and aggravated assault. Perfect man for a small hit job in need of cash.”
“Then go bring him in McGee. Take Bishop with you.”
They both quickly scurried off, not wanting to be in the awkward space that you had made. Once the elevator doors closed behind them, you spun around, legs now hanging over Jethro’s side.
“Well you certainly have them trained well.”
“Yeah, they listen. Unlike you. I told you to go back to work, we’ve got this handled.”
You leaned in slightly, watching as his eyes briefly glanced down at your slightly opened blouse and then back at your eyes.
“You know how much I love pushing your buttons Jethro. Plus, I’ve been at work all day and haven’t been able to get anything done. I didn’t feel safe there without you there.”
You picked up his cup of coffee and took a sip, grimacing at the bitter taste. You forgot he liked his coffee plain.
“I’ve got an agent assigned to you when I’m not there,” he explained, taking the coffee out of your hands and taking a sip of his own.
“It’s not the same. Plus, I was thinking maybe we could get a bite to eat. Im starving and I’m assuming all you’ve had today is coffee.”
“No time. Got a killer to catch.”
“Yeah well you’ll be no good to anyone when you pass out from lack of food and an overdose on caffeine.”
He gave you the familiar look that let you know that he let you win the argument. He only ever gave it to you when he also secretly agreed with you.
Without a word, he got up and you hopped down to follow him with a triumphant smile.
————
“I don’t know why we couldn’t have gone to Duke’s. They’ve got the best beet salad,” you complained, sticking an overly cooked fry into your mouth. The little diner was cute but you were sure they weren’t known for their food.
“This place has good coffee.”
You watched him sip his probably 5th coffee of the day and rolled your eyes. Just then, your phone began ringing and you saw the caller ID as your next door neighbor.
“Hey Greg, what’s up?…What? Right now?….Can you see what he looks like?”
You listened to him give you a description and motioned to Jethro that it was important.
“Ok, no don’t confront them! We’re on our way!”
You hung up as Jethro had already gotten up and paid for the dinner.
“My neighbor just called saying someone was breaking into my place. His description was vague but it looked like they were looking for something.”
You both left the diner and sped off to your house. When you arrived, Greg was waiting out front and he gave you a hug, receiving a look from Jethro.
“They left just after I hung up with you. Took off in a blue sedan. I’m so glad you weren’t in there. I think I saw a gun.”
“Stay here,” Jethro ordered, pulling out his own gun and Greg’s eyes got wide.
“Don’t worry Greg. He’s a federal agent.”
The two of you waited as Jethro cleared the house and came back outside.
“What do you think he was looking for? Does this have anything to do with that crazy lady shooting you Y/N?” Greg asked as we all walked up the house steps.
“I’m not sure Greg, but I appreciate you calling.”
“Yeah no problem. I enjoy looking out for you,” he replied with a smile. Jethro gave him his classic hard stare and Greg cleared his throat awkwardly, smile fading.
“Alright. Well as long as you’re safe. Have a good-
The front door shut on him before he had a chance to finish his sentence and you looked at Jethro.
“He was just being nice Jet.”
“Mm-hm.”
You went around the semi trashed house, trying to figure out if anything was taken as Jethro picked up a little wooden boat from your shelf and inspected it.
“Your first gift to me. Made out of an old piece of driftwood I think you told me.”
He put it back and walked over to you as you finished putting back the couch cushions together.
“Well I don’t think anything was taken but honestly, I could be sure-
You were promptly interrupted by Jethro’s lips on yours and almost froze in shock.
When he didn’t make a move to pull away, you quickly matched his energy and wrapped your arms around his neck, pulling yourself closer.
You both took steps until you felt your back touch the hallway wall. His kisses moved from your lips to your neck as you pulled his jacket off.
“Bedroom. Now,” he spoke huskily, sparking a fire within you. Grabbing his hand, you led him down the hallway and into your bedroom that had also clearly been tossed. You could’ve cared less as the both of you got undressed, Jethro setting his gun and badge down on your bedside table and pulling you into bed.
He didn’t stay on top too long before grabbing you so that you sat atop of him, easily sinking down onto his more than ready length. You both moaned at the contact and you made quick work, rocking back and forth with Jethro’s big hands gripping your hips.
“Just like that baby,” he grunted, looking up at you as you let your head fall back in ecstasy. His hands traveled so that your breasts were being squeezed and pinched, quickly bringing you closer to your climax.
“I can’t last much longer Jet,” you panted, clenching around him, making his eyes close.
He sat up and pulled you in for another kiss, hands helping keep up your rythmic pace until you fell apart, orgasm hitting you like a freight train. He wasn’t far behind, groaning and holding you still as he filled you up, knowing you loved it when he came inside of you.
Breaths heavy as you both came down from your high, you stayed together, embracing each other. He tiredly peppered kisses on your shoulder and gently ran his fingers across your back, making you shiver.
He chuckled and pressed a kiss against your ear. “You were always so easily overstimulated.”
“Yeah well you make it so easy with your talented multi-tasking.”
Eventually, you two separated, you heading into the bathroom to clean up. When you came out, Jethro was on the phone but handed you your clothes.
“Yup. We’ll be right there.”
He hung up and finished tucking and buttoning up his dress shirt.
“That was McGee. They’ve got Dominic in interrogation. He wants to confess.”
“That’s great,” you said, getting dressed and walking over to him as he clipped his badge on and gun on. Fixing his dishelved hair, you smiled and pecked his lips.
“I hope you’ll still come by even after we nail this bastard.”
“Well someone’s gotta make sure Greg keeps his distance.”
You laughed and followed him out.

Non-Descript Winter Holiday Party
Weiss: Hello- Oh... It's you two.
Emerald: Wow. Aren't you cheery?
Oscar: Hey, Weiss! Uh, everything okay?
Weiss: It's fine, it's fine. Honestly, I'm a little relieved. You're the first non-couple I've seen all night.
Emerald: Really?
Oscar: Really...
Weiss: Yes, and it's a little grating on my nerves to have so many couples over with no other single people to talk to. Everyone is just finishing each other's sentences and rubbing and kissing oh so wholesomely~!
Weiss: It almost makes me want to puke.
Emerald: And a bah humbug to you, too.
Weiss: Well, thankfully you're here, so I don't have to worry about you two sucking face all night.
Oscar: Yeah...
Weiss: Anyways, come on in. There should be plenty of food left unless-
------------------------------------------
Nora: (Shoves another fruitcake into her mouth)
Jaune: ...
Nora: (Mouthful) Whuh? Iz nundezkri-
Jaune: I know what it is, Nora. I just wished you practiced a little self control every now and then, y'know?
Nora: (Swallows) Oh, believe me, I am. You think I'm not holding myself back from taking you and this food into the back room and-
Yang: OKAY! I think that's enough from Nora for tonight. Seriously, were you always this weirdly horny for food and guys?
Nora: Not just any guys. Just the guys I like, like you, but mostly you~! (Snuggles Jaune)
Ren: Even though we never did anything.
Yang: Which is still amazing because Ren is such a-
Jaune: I think it would be better for everyone here to practice a little more self-control.
------------------------------------------
Ruby: And what the heck is that supposed to mean?
Blake: I have nothing against the effort, but I just feel there wasn't enough effort put into the relationship for the ship to mean anything.
Ruby: What do you meeeean?! There was so much effort put in! The setups, the music, the kiss!
Blake: Felt forced, didn't fit the scene, and was weirdly good for two characters in a realistic teen drama to be kissing so well together, despite neither having ANY prior relationships before each other.
Whitley: ...I thought the story was okay.
Sun: Yeah, and the music was sick! I still have that rock song playing on my scroll all the time.
Ruby: See! Sun agrees with me!
Sun: Huh?
Blake: Whitley was right. The story was only okay.
Whitley: What? Nonono, I said-
------------------------------------------
Weiss: So then I told her, "Well, this was your fault for trusting me in the first place!"
Oscar: Hahaha!
Emerald: Heh. Sounds like you guys had fun at Beacon.
Weiss: We did, though you would know, since you were there, too.
Emerald: Yup. Plotting and scheming with Cinder.
Weiss: How did you three pass for students?
Emerald: Apparently, Haven doesn't look too deep when it comes to "late age" students, which probably came from when Spiders would lend out their lackeys as students as a sort of "student exchange" between real students and gangsters.
Weiss: Really?
Oscar: Yup. It's part of why I didn't go to any sort of huntsman schooling. Well, that and my aunt needed my help with the farm.
Ozpin: (Thinking) It's sad to see how far Leo fell, after fighting so hard to get where he did.
Weiss: Oh, excuse me. There's someone at the door.
Emerald: ...What did you guys grow out there?
Oscar: Oh, uh, carrots, turnips, beets. Y'know, the usual.
Emerald: Y'know, I can't say I've ever had beets before.
Oscar: You haven't? They're really good!
Emerald: Yeah? All I see are those red blobs in cans.
Oscar: Well, yeah, but those are actually really good. Especially when you slice them up and put them in your salad.
Emerald: Guess I'll have to try out this recipe of yours then.
Oscar: Really?! Er, I mean... Cool. Cool.
Emerald: Heh heh...
Ozpin: (Sighs)
------------------------------------------
Weiss: ...Is there a reason you're sitting here alone?
Ilia: Ack! I, uh... I'm just, y'know, relaxing, winding down-
Weiss: Staring at Blake?
Ilia: Staring at Bla- No! Of course not! I would never do that!
Weiss: Really? Because from where I'm sitting, there is an entire room of people all conversing, both couples and single people alike, and yet the only thing you've said tonight beyond "Hello" is a sigh. Just because you're single does not excuse your isolation from everyone else here.
Ilia: Oh, what do you know? You've always had someone to talk to! But some of us only had one person, and that one person then chose to leave us behind!
Weiss: It's called growing up. It's a new thing, I know, but it works wonders, I hear.
Ilia: Oh, screw you!
Weiss: ...Wait. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have been so hostile with you. I've... I know what you mean by being left behind. Everyone at this party is someone I got close to or was the reason they left. It's not easy being single in a party of couples, but... But the least we can do when we're single is to be happily single. So... What say we be happily single... together. Just for tonight.
Ilia: ...Okay.

my favourite safe, low cal meals/snacks as a vegan🐸 (please share yours!!!)
⁃ congee with 30g of rice + veggies/mushrooms + 250ml veg stock, let it cook for like 40mins and then let it sit a bit in the plate, like a porridge. You can add anything to this and switch ingredients.
⁃ seitan skewers —> seitan is SO SO high in protein and so good to me even raw lol, same with tofu.
⁃ block of silken tofu with teriyaki/soy sauce, spices and spring onion —> high in protein, in volume, super simple yet super good, to me its the equivalent of tartare
⁃ tofu scramble —> with the right ingredients and secrets, tofu can be 100% better than eggs. I always hated the texture. Btw I use a little bit of vegan butter, garlic, nutritional yeast, soy milk or melted miso paste, pepper, vegan grated parmesan if I have it and turmeric or saffron.
⁃ tofu with veggies —> I love using red pepper, zucchini, carrots, onion, maybe with origan, black pepper, thyme, curry or paprika
⁃ roasted sweet potato —> I could talk about sweet potato for days. She’s so good cooked in the oven with rosemary, salt, cinnamon, pepper, definitely a safe food.
⁃ soups and pureed soups (I love them with cabbage, pumpkin, mushrooms, i love miso soup, or soups with legumes in it) —> they can be under 100/80 cals and still slap, honestly my salvation when I want to stay under a cal limit or I already reached it but still have to eat something
⁃ hummus of any kind (I recently added sweet potato to it and it blends magically and adds so much volume and flavour!!)
⁃ big salads —> just this, any type. I love a salad with roasted veggies in it or beets and balsamic vinegar
⁃ pan-roasted red cabbage with cannellini dressing —> an easy cannellini puree with some miso paste to blend or some tahini, on top of one or two slices of cabbage cooked in a pan with some oil and maple syrup/marinate sauce
⁃ salted udon/rice noodles with veggies and soy sauce
⁃ ikea vegetable balls (🤤) in marinara sauce
⁃ any vegan burger which is always under 300 cals + some grilled or raw veggies
⁃ tortilla wrap with grilled veggies, tofu, any sauce you like or hummus
⁃ tomato pasta —> simple, lazy, its ok
⁃ chickpea salad with cherry tomatoes, lattuce, pickled onions and pesto tofu dressing
⁃ tortilla-pizza —> under 150 cals and perfect when craving pizza
⁃ chickpea farinata —> again, lazy recipe, so good and rich in protein
⁃ literally anything with rice paper, its so versatile, i love spring rolls
⁃ lentil ragú
⁃ ratatouille
⁃ spelt/orzo with anything, fresh with veggies or cooked in a pureed soup, to make it like a risotto

Happy Mole Interest Monday, folks! I don't have my Redwall books on hand today, but I do have the official Redwall Cookbook, and here are two recipes to help everyone really get into the spirit of the holiday. Recipes and moles under the cut. The measurements and temps use the American system.
Vegetable Casserole à la Formole
Ingredients:
Unsalted butter, for the casserole dish
4 large potatoes, scrubbed and sliced
4 medium carrots, peeled and sliced
1 turnip or 1/2 a rutabaga, peeled and diced
I cup vegetable stock
Salt and pepper, to taste
3/4 cup breadcrumbs, preferably whole wheat
2 cups (4 oz) grated sharp cheddar cheese
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a large casserole dish with butter.
Arrange the vegetables in alternate layers in the dish, beginning and ending with potatoes.
Pour the stock over the vegetables and season with salt and pepper.
Cover with a lid or foil and bake for 1 and a half hours.
In a bowl, mix together the breadcrumbs and cheese and sprinkle them on top of the casserole.
Return the dish to the oven and bake, uncovered, until the topping is crisp and starting to brown, 10 to 15 more minutes.
Mole's Favorite Deeper'n'Ever Turnip'n'Tater'n'Beetroot Pie
Ingredients:
I lb (3 medium) potatoes, peeled and chopped
Salt, to taste
1/2 pound (4 medium) carrots, peeled and chopped
1/2 pound turnips or rutabaga, peeled and chopped
6 tbs unsalted butter
Pepper, to taste
I cup (2 oz) grated cheddar cheese (or any favorite hard cheese)
(Optional) Crisp green salad, for serving
(Optional) picked beets, for serving
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Place the potatoes in a saucepan, cover with water and a pinch of salt. Place carrots and turnips or rutabaga in another saucepan, cover with water and add a pinch of salt. Boil all the vegetables until soft, 10 to 15 minutes.
Drain the vegetables separately, then return them to their pans and add half the butter to each pan. Mash the vegetables until they are smooth and season them with salt and pepper.
In a deep casserole dish, spread alternating layers of the mashed vegetables, starting with the carrot mixture and finishing with a layer of potato. Roughen the top with a fork.
Sprinkle cheese on top and bake on the top shelf until the cheese is bubbling, about 15 minutes.
Serve with a crisp green salad and pickled beets if desired.
And here are the moles, as promised.

Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana, Brassicaceae - Mustard Family)
an extended version of this materia media can be found on the Patreon - where I share some gastronomic/culinary commentaries on horseradish
"The root's potent smell can be attributed to allyl isothiocyanate, or Mustard oil, which is released when the plant's skin is broken or disturbed. Similar to other members of the Brassicaceae family, this constituent is also found in Brussels sprouts, Mustard, and Turnips."
"In Greek mythology, the Delphic Oracle told Apollo, 'The Radish is worth its weight in lead, the Beet its weight in silver, the Horseradish its weight in gold.'"
"To a worm in a horseradish, the world is a horseradish” - Yiddish Proverb
Gardening: full sun to part shade; well draining loose or sandy soil; regular water; room to spread and grow deep, often takes over more space than expected; thrives even when neglected; herbaceous perennial
Native Region: Russia & Eastern Ukraine
Season: autumn and winter (hardy to zone 5)
Affinity: sinuses, lungs, digestive system, circulation
Parts: roots and leaves
Medicinal: fire cider/oxymels, cold-water infusion, succus (fresh juice), cough syrup, poultice for sprains/injuries, tincture, culinary measures
"Grated horseradish mixed with honey [or vegan alternative]. After mixing, allow to stand to take off sharp taste. The [sweetener] is only used to make it more palatable. 2/3 horse-radish and 1/3 [sweetener], or to suit the taste. The ordinary radish, especially the black radish, may also be used the same way, or finely sliced and eaten alone as a salad. For consumptives who cough without spitting, give a spoonful every once in a while." - Special "Mucus-Eliminator" Recipe in Arnold Ehret's Mucusless Diet Healing System
^I like to add grated orange peel to help make it more manageable to taste^
Actions: diuretic, stimulant, expectorant, rubefacient, aphrodisiac, digestive, antiseptic (laxative), aperient, anthelmintic, emetic (in high doses)
‼when you cut into horseradish, its pungent smell can irritate the eyes and nasal passages, so it's better to do in a well-ventilated area or outside. It is more potent in its effect than onions. The taste is also very pungent, so you don't need much.
Energetic Uses (eg. flower essence, elemental rituals): FIRE ELEMENT - balance fiery nature, excite inner fire, move you beyond sense of being stuck/helpless, shine a light on blockages, release old patterns or thoughtforms
Indications: hoarse, persistent, dry cough; rheumatism; tuberculosis; kidney stones; parasite infections; cold; congestion
Analogs: wasabi, radish, mustard, brussels sprouts, moringa (Moringa oleifera)
Traditional Uses:
Ancient Greeks & Romans: rub for lower back pain or menstrual cramps, aphrodisiac
Middle Ages: asthma, arthritis, cancer, toothaches
Jewish: bitter herb for Passover seder
Native Americans: toothaches, menstrual cramps
British: accompaniment to beef and oysters, cordials
Scurvy preventative
Treatment for tuberculosis
Restoring color and freshness to skin (cosmetic usage)
Modern Ideas:
"The enzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP) is a useful
tool for detecting antibodies in the molecular biology field."
"In 2008, researchers reported that they had developed a fire alarm for the deaf and hard of hearing by harnessing the strong smell of horseradish."
"Researchers from Pennsylvania State University announced in 1995 that according to their studies, using horseradish may help purify wastewater and tainted soils."

What do you guys usually eat on Christmas Eve (also where are you from)? Here’s my Polish Wigilia:
Dish 0: Opłatek (Christmas wafer to be shared with family) 1. Barszcz z uszkami (dark red beet soup, no floating veggies just pig ear-shaped mushroom dumplings, the uszka) 2. Pierogi with cabbage and mushrooms, or if we’re feeling fancy krokiety with cabbage and mushrooms (dumplings or croquettes, both go well with barszcz) 3. Fish soup 4. Ryba po grecku („fish the greek way”, fried carp on a pile of boiled grated vegetables, mostly carrots, apparently Greek people have no idea what the fuck we’re on about) 5. Another fish, pan fried, with lemon (the reason it’s on the menu is that nobody in my family truly likes ryba po grecku and we’d all rather eat some different kind of fish, but it’s a tradition) 6. Herring in sour cream, details vary 7. Marinated mushrooms in mayonnaise 8. Vegetable salad, the one everyone makes (pickled cucumbers, onions, potatoes, carrots, parsley root, boiled eggs, apples, peas, mayonnaise, salt, pepper some mustard) 9. Leek and gouda cheese salad (leek, pickled cucumbers, gouda, pinapple, boiled eggs, peas, mayonnaise, salt, pepper, mustard) 10. Sernik (cheesecake) 11. Makowiec or „karaluszki makowe” (poppy seed cake or poppy seed cookies) 12. Piernik (gingerbread cake or cookies)
Other possible options include gravlax and more cakes - chocolate cake, multilayered nut cake we call „snickers” or, like this year, carrot cake.
We stopped serving kutia and kompot well before my lifetime because grandpa hates it. Grandpa is also the only reason fish soup is still on the menu.

For the beet anon, i have a very wimple very delicious recipe:
Take one beet and one carrot, wash +peel them and grate them both on the larger round holes of the grater. Mix em up in a bowl, throw some salt on it, squeeze half a lemon (or more if you so like) on it, and then some sunflower oil or oil of your choice (i would say sunflower and olive are good though the flavour profile is gonna be different, sesame oil also goes but it’s very strongly flavoured so careful there. If you have at hand walnut oil could be amazing but honestly plain sunflower oil is your best bet) and voila! You have yourself a delicious easy salad.
Note: the beets stain A LOT so for the grating, choose a garment you won’t mind getting stained
very interesting! I rarely eat beets raw but maybe it's time to change that, hm.

Ed recently had a hankering for beets so I made this salad. It’s very refreshing and hit the spot!
I’ve made this salad using different kinds of cheese (blue, goat) and also without the cheese (I’ve added pepitas and chick peas on occasion).

ROASTED BEET, ORANGE AND FETA SALAD
4 medium beets
1 navel orange
3-4 medium scallions, chopped
1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese
2 teaspoons grated fresh orange zest
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Scrub the beets, then wrap them tightly in aluminum foil. Place the package on a baking sheet and roast the beets for 40-70 minutes, depending on size, or until they are tender when pierced with the tip of a sharp knife. Let cool, then unwrap and peel the beets. Cut the beets into bite size pieces and place them in a bowl. Peel the orange, remove the pith and cut the flesh into bite size pieces and add them to the beets. Add the scallions, feta cheese and orange zest and toss the ingredients to distribute them evenly. Pour in the olive oil and toss the ingredients to coat them with the oil. Add the vinegar and toss again.
Makes 4 servings

RECIPE: Immunity Salad (from Salad Freak: Recipes to Feed a Healthy Obsession by Jess Damuck)
You don’t need to already be sick to make this salad—but doesn’t just looking at it brighten your day a little bit? Eating it regularly during the colder months gives your immune system a boost but also just feels really clean and fresh when we may be eating a lot of things that aren’t.
Serves 2 as a light meal (This is great served with your favorite brothy soup.)
PRODUCE
2 large beets
2 sweet potatoes
1 (1-inch/2.5 cm) piece ginger, peeled
1 clove garlic, peeled
1 head fennel
1 grapefruit
4 cups (80 g) baby spinach
PANTRY
Extra-virgin olive oil
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
½ teaspoon honey
6 Medjool dates
½ cup (65 g) hulled pumpkin seeds (pepitas), toasted
COOK: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
Trim the leaves from 2 large beets (reserve for another use; for instance, sauté them in a little garlic and olive oil!). Roast the beets for 60 minutes. (Note from Abrams: You can find Jess' technique in Salad Freak!)
When the beets have been in the oven for 20 minutes, slice 2 sweet potatoes in ¼-inch thick (6 mm) rounds, place them on another rimmed baking sheet, and toss them with olive oil salt and pepper. Roast for about 30 minutes, tossing the potatoes once, until they are golden brown and the beets can be easily pierced with a knife. Let them cool to room temperature or until they are able to be handled.
MAKE THE GINGER, GARLIC, AND APPLE CIDER VINAIGRETTE: Into a large bowl, grate 1 inch (2.5 cm) ginger and 1 clove garlic, then add 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, ½ teaspoon honey, and 2 tablespoons olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.
PREP: Make an ice bath. Cut the stalks and fronds from the fennel bulb and cut in half, and then in half again, and then thinly slice on a mandoline right into the ice bath. Let crisp up for about 10 minutes, then pat dry on paper towels or a clean dish towel.
Cut 1 grapefruit into supremes.
Pit and slice 6 dates.
ASSEMBLE AND SERVE: Add the fennel, grapefruit, dates, 4 cups (80 g) baby spinach, beets, and sweet potatoes to the large bowl with the dressing. Toss everything to combine, arrange on serving plates, and then sprinkle with ½ cup (65 g) pumpkin seeds. And stay healthy!

so i just need to vent about something that absolutely GRATED me.
the other week we drove to go see mine & mr oatmilk's nieces for one of their birthdays. mr oatmilk mentioned how for his birthday, i took him to this super expensive restaurant and he finally got to try wagyu steak, albeit an american wagyu, bc he was saving trying japanese wagyu for our trip to japan later this year.
and that was fine.
what wasnt fine was his parents asking how much it cost and then how much the meal total cost, and i laughed it off by saying i had expected it to be twice what it did. and they kept probing until he told them the ballpark number he figured mentally knowing what he got and what i got (which, by the way, was well worth the price tag bc the beet salad i had was the absolute best thing ive ever put in my mouth)
so all night his parents and sister made comments about how "the mortician money must be good" and how it "must be nice" to have money like i do, all the while mind yall, they have plenty. and then they started making comments about how maybe i should pay for things for them, and his mom even went so far as to say she was going to start sending me her amazon wishlist so i can bless her. biiiiiitch please. i laughed, too.
first of all, i dont like yall. full stop
second of all, it's my money. if i wanna buy my fiance a wagyu filet, im gonna. im gonna do it for him, not for yall. and im gonna buy myself a beet, walnut, grilled peach, and arugula salad with balsamic reduction, too, bc i can do it for myself. if yall dont wanna spend that on yourselves as a nice treat, thats YOUR prerogative, not mine. i work hard, i deserve it, and he deserved a nice birthday meal.
third, i dont owe yall a damn thing, and youre certainly not entitled to send me your amazon wishlist and act like im some family sugar mama yall are about to inherit. i do for ME. not yall. it doesnt matter how much money i make, yall should be satisfied your son and i are doing well financially, enough so that i can comfortably afford an expensive meal at one of the nicest restaurants in the city.
as if i didnt have to claw my way here, too. like what yall are mad bc at 29 im doing better than you at twice my age? thats a you problem not a me problem.
also yall have made me feel like shit for other things before, and now that it accidentally slipped i kinda have money, now youre gonna be nice to me? absolutely not.
the entitlement in this family??? outrageous.

how to make a seder salad! obviously, this isn’t a traditional sort of seder meal. it is, however, a Very nontraditional way of participating in a seder when you’re alone, have food issues, or need to be covert. i needed something that fit all three of those boxes this year, so i came up with this. the parsley is a stand in for karpas, the apples and nuts for haroset, the romaine for maror, the egg for beitzah, the beets for zeroa, the salt water for our tears, the orange for our lgbtq+, the garlic for protection, and the olive oil for liberation and protection for palestinians. i’d like to shoutout @jewitches, i learned about adding garlic, oranges, and olives (in this case olive oil) to seder plates through them :) add whatever amounts you’d like of anything, wrt the vinaigrette i usually do a couple tablespoons olive oil and acid and then everything else to taste.
INGREDIENTS:
romaine lettuce (+ mixed greens if you’d like additional bitterness)
parsley
chopped or sliced red beets
chopped fresh orange slices (alternative: -canned or otherwise packaged mandarins that have been drained and rinsed)
chopped or grated apples
nuts (walnuts or pecans are best)
matzoh (alternative: other hard cracker)
egg (alternative: avocado)
salt water
roasted garlic or garlic powder
olive oil
honey
vinegar (red wine, balsamic, or apple cider is best) OR lemon juice if you’d prefer to stay away from anything fermented for pesach
CREATION:
combine olive oil, honey, a small amount of salt water, parsley, garlic, and your vinegar or lemon in a container you can aggressively shake
aggressively shake the mixture
taste the vinaigrette you’ve just made and adjust it as needed until it tastes good to you
add your romaine to a large bowl
in another bowl, toss your apples, nuts, oranges, and beets together with the vinaigrette
add the previous mix to your lettuce
as that all rests together in the fridge or on the counter, boil then scorch an egg, peel it, and add the whole thing or just the whites to your salad. if using an avocado instead, just slice and fan on top.
top with crumbled matzoh/crackers or put the salad on the matzoh like a pizza or sandwich :)

Soooo I realized I've never really told y'all about my garden season..... of course I'll do this anyway
First of all, the background. I live in the zone 4, and this year summer started very late, and ended September the 1st🤡🤡🤡 like honestly, it's already pretty cold, today's night temperature will be circa 1 Celsius degree.
First of all, remember my little seedlings? Well that's them now!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tomatoes and peppers have to grow ripe at home, because they was so HUGE and still green, and the first week of autumn was cold and humid, I was frightened that all this will perish from the cold bite or some sort of illness. But they're still delicious! Guess that next year I just have to pick some medium sized varieties.
ALSO I had just groundbreaking and mysterious tomato plant in my greenhouse, which came out of NOWHERE (I really don't know where he sprouted from!! I've never had this variety!) and was awesome! The tomatoes was tiny, but verrrry tasty and there was a plenty of them! So I saved some seeds and hope that I'll be able to grow them next year!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also I had cucumbers, beans, zucchini, chickpeas, napa cabbage, daikon, borage, salad, carrots, beet and different greens!
To sum it up, I am not totally happy with my season, always thinking that other people have such a great results, healthier and more beautiful plants, but I can visit my garden only at weekends and still don't have any real experience, but I'm learning, and I'm very grateful to have this garden and opportunity to grow something. I love it very much. It is a bit sad that growing season is almost over, but I'm looking forward for the next!
Some more pics of my garden!
