So, you are bummed out about “The Owl House” ending? Now where will you get your fix of weird and charming magic stories?

Then go read “Strange Academy”, written by the awesome Skottie Young, the genius behind “I Hate Fairyland.”

It seems like a typical academy of adventure sort of deal. It is, yet it is not. The school was founded by Doctor Strange AKA the Sorcerer Supreme. It is a place where young teen magic users can learn how to perfect their skills as well as be taught about magic in general so they can better understand this dangerous world where everything usually have a cost of a sort.

But that’s not all. The school’s true purpose is to prepare the magic teens to face an upcoming challenge. there is a prophesy that one of the students of Strange Academy will be “the One”, meaning either the one to save all magic... or destroy it.

What makes this series truly unique is how it treats the teen hero trope. You know, that kid who is sick of the adults and their BS. The smart teen who stands up for what is right and is not scared of breaking the rules. The one who inspire the other kids to take up the good fight, who is sick of waiting for positive change. “Strange Academy” takes this old trope and do some pretty interesting and even unexpected things with it.

We see old faces like Scarlet Witch, Illyana Rasputina, Doctor Voodoo and other magic veterans of the Marvel universe as well the brand new students who are of all types and shapes. Some of them are undead, sentient crystal, wears a magic jacket, Asgardian, you name it. Heck, one of them is the son of Dormammu AKA the demon ruler of the Dark Dimension.

Also, the school is located in New Orleans.

Go read “Strange Academy.”

A while back I commissioned some art from @cadhla182 and it came out very well! The idea was that Nico and Laura had infiltrated an underground fighting ring before teaming up to take it down. A comment on the post of this on twitter about how mismatched the fight would be got me thinking... and thinking... And I overthought it.

I ended up working out an entire powers-free MMA AU for the women of the Marvel Universe, complete with taking into account first appearances 'prime fighting' ages, and the like. I've got SPREADSHEETS for this thing. So, it turned out Nico and Laura are in different weight divisions. Nico's a Strawweight. Laura Kinney ended up in Flyweight. So, I got to thinking -- who should Nico and Laura be matched against? I managed to work out a list of top contenders in the various weight classes. Some would utterly trounce Nico even in an MMA AU, but others might be better matches. I can't decide myself, who do you think would be a good match for her? Yes, I plan on commissioning this once the poll is over!

There are others in the division, but what I'm looking for is someone on her level, not someone who would overwhelm her. Specifically, Kate Pryde, Jeanet Foucault, Nadia Van Dyne, and Daisy Johnson round out the "Top 16" in that division. "But what about--" Probably not in that division, or you're thinking of a very obscure character, "What about Janet Van Dyne?!" Retired Champion, currently mentoring Nadia, but might be coaxed out of retirement for one more match... If I can ever really round down a Top 8 from this list! (What about Laura and her opponent? Well, that I've narrowed down to 4: Kate Bishop, Illyana Rasputina, Mantis, and Squirrel Girl -- but that's hopefully going to be easier to figure out...)

Why Magik?

5. kate bishop. that girl is not straight! america chavez was her bi awakening and i refuse to believe otherwise.

4. gambit. actually he's already bi he just forgot to tell marvel that he's out. he's very devoted to rogue right now but has 100% dated other x-men like bishop in the past.

3. illyana rasputina. she is LESBIAN and she is in love with kitty pryde and i will take no other interpretation of this character! i believe it firmly!

2. rahne sinclair. her mutation and her experience with it is literally a metaphor for growing up gay in a homophobic environment. i don't know what else to tell you, her character simply doesn't make sense if she isn't a lesbian.

1.magneto. he's been married and divorced from professor x more times than either of them can count. that's just the facts. also, i'm not up to date on x-men red but he's definitely having a rebound with the fisher king last i checked.

POINT OF ORIGIN: Comics origin, taking from the original New Mutants run, some 2009 New Mutants, a lil bit of Uncanny

ABILITIES/SKILLS: Stepping Discs: Controlling the stepping discs of Limbo allows Illyana to teleport through space and time. It’s not always exact, and she always passes through Limbo to get to where she’s going. The further out she goes, the less control she has. Soulsword: Using a piece of her soul, Illyana forged a sword she can summon at will. It doesn’t cut through solid matter as other swords do, but rather disrupts spells and magical abilities. Sorcery: Illyana has studied as a sorcerer under the tutelage of the demon lord Belasco since she’s was very little. She’s mostly adept at dark magic, and can struggle a bit with lighter magic, especially outside of Limbo.

HAVE THEY BROUGHT ANY FAMILY OR PETS WITH THEM: No pets! But she would enjoy a visit from Lockheed every now and then, if he ever ventures away from Kate.

ANY HEADCANONS YOU WANT OTHERS TO KNOW: I like to think Illyana’s accent isn’t quite Russian. It’s there a little bit, but really she hasn’t lived in Siberia since she was seven years old. English was basically downloaded into her head, then she spent years in Limbo. So there’s a bit of a Russian accent, but there’s also a bit of something else. Illyana knows where she got it, but it’d be hard for others to place.

QUESTIONNAIRE

HOW DOES YOUR CHARACTER FEEL ABOUT EMPEROR DOOM? It’s admittedly pretty impressive, what he did. It’d be wrong not have some amount of respect for a man who can wrangle universes together where there was only chaos before. But she’s not really big on supreme rulers, if she’s being honest. Maybe it’s an authority thing, maybe it’s that she knows what it’s like to wrest control from one, but she certainly doesn’t feel like bowing down at his feet any time soon.

HOW DOES YOUR CHARACTER FEEL ABOUT THE BATTLES? ARE THEY TRYING TO AVOID THEM? OR ARE THEY EAGER TO JUMP IN? It’s fun! In a way. Competing in the Killoseum was an easy answer. She has magic, she has a frankly really cool sword. Besides, maybe there’s something to be learned from being right in the middle of everything. Everything is a mess, she’s still trying to figure out how the pieces all fit together and what the purpose might be, but swinging her sword in battle? That makes sense. That’ll always make sense.

WHY HAS YOUR CHARACTER ACCEPTED THEIR JOB POSITION? WILL THEY USE IT TO GET CLOSER TO DOOM? OR WILL THEY USE IT EXPLOIT HIM? OR DO THEY SIMPLY LIKE THEIR JOB? RE: It’s fun! (Or maybe it’s an easy outlet. Maybe she’s just so angry all the time. It’s easier to be angry than whatever else she might feel if she lets that anger be quiet for a second. If she can spend her days swinging her sword around, filling it with all that noise, it doesn’t ever have to be quiet enough to think about anything else. Or maybe, just maybe she wouldn’t mind doing something on Krakoa. She loves the younger generation more than she’d ever admit. She loves how they sometimes come to her for advice, how teaching comes easily despite what others might think. Maybe–) It’s really fun. Just ask her.

We are introduced to an x-character almost Nobody talks about and an avenger, nobody talks about. That's right, everyone Firestar and Vance Astro.

[Shot of a couple in a very high-tech space, also presumably underground. They're both in spandex, and both look very fit and very white in a sort of Middle American kind of way. Somehow, it is also obvious that they're not the brightest bulbs in the chandelier.]

*Doctor Benway: These two are the dumbest motherfuckers to ever exist.

Angelica Jones, Firestar and Vance Astro, Justice. I don't care for Vance. But, curiously, The Avengers are present in some form in this au. You would think that this is a world that cant sustain them and we know very little of their full roster.

VA: We got picked up at the airport by Scott Summers. He picked up Doug from the bus station in White Plains on the way.

Int: Did you sense anything ususal?

AA: Summers kind of weirded us out. He didn't say anything. He was waiting for us, holding up a sign with my name on it as I came off the plane. Vance was there with him. It's how we met.

VA: I was so glad to see you. Summers had met my plane an hour earlier and hadn't said anything to me. I asked him some questions, but he just dismissed everything I said with a Yes or a No until I gave up.

Int: Did you have any idea of what awaited you at the house?

VA: We were pretty nervous, but we had no idea what was coming.

AA: No idea at all.

[Shot: Doug & Marie-Ange Ramsey]

DR: If I had been religious, I'd have said it was like something out of Hell. Going there totally killed off any belief I'd had that there was a God. No God would have allowed that place to exist.

*Dramatic young man.

MAR: But you didn't know that then.

DR: No, not then. Not on that visit.

Int: Did you see anything that disturbed you?

DR: Nothing, at first. On the drive in, I met Vance and Angie, but we were all kind of nervous. Summers kind of projected this weird cone of silence, and I didn't even ask them their names until we got to the School. Xavier and McCoy met with me in this really slick office. Xavier asked me some questions, but he seemed kind of pre-occupied and not really interested. McCoy was the one who really took an interest and asked all the questions.

Int: What kind of questions?

DR: Going-to-the-doctor-type questions. Height, weight, blood type, any loathsome diseases, all that kind of thing. I suppose I should be glad I've still got all my original parts.

*asking questions before removing organs.

Int: Do you think that Xavier tried to take control of your mind?

DR: Someone was sure trying to do something. It felt like a worm was trying to crawl around in my head, but as soon as I'd think that I'd forget it. It was weird.

Int: But you still felt that you were in control.

DR: I still was. I'm resistant. Almost all the survivors were. If you had no innate defenses, there was no protection. I've got protection now. This entire house is a Faraday cage, buried 10 feet below the ground. No psi is ever going to get in here.

Int: You still worry about an attack?

DR: I won't risk it. Never again.

MAR: It won't. I'm sure that our guest would like to know what happened next.

DR: We had a tour of the grounds, which I thought was kind of weird, because I wanted to see what was inside. Computers, science labs, that sort of thing. Instead they showed us the forest and the lake and the boathouse.

Int: Did you meet any of the staff?

DR: Jean Grey, Summers, Logan, McCoy, the Irish guy, the Russian guy and his sister. There were two students there, Sam Guthrie and the one I'll call Psyche. Besides me, there were three other kids visiting. Vance, Angelica and David.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns (2022) Firaxis Games

I completed Marvel’s Midnights Suns, and I really liked it. When I first learned that it was a turn-based RPG, I was hesitant. But when I started to play it, I found that having to think about which cards need to be played in order to succeed is one of the funnest aspects of the title. I appreciated the graphics, the customizations, the humor, the pop culture references, and all of the clever nods to Marvel lore discovered throughout the game.

Laura Bailey ( Magik / Illyana Rasputina )

The voice actors are great in this. Laura Bailey nailed the role of Illyana Rasputina. I think that Belasco would have something to say about his role in Magik’s story being handed to Mephisto, but Midnight Suns is one of the most accurate representations of Illyana to date. If you’re a Magik fan like I am, you owe it to yourself to play this. You will enjoy cultivating a friendship with the mistress of Limbo.

I could tell a lot of love was put into Midnight Suns, from developers who cared about their subject matter. I’ve read from other gamers Midnight Suns is akin to reading one of their favorite comic book miniseries, and I agree. I think it’s unfortunate that it’s underperforming. I hope the critical praise spreads to consumers, because it’s a lot of fun. I look forward to Storm’s adventure. Until then, I’m giving my thumbs a break.

Rating 8 /10 Stars

This would have been higher, but I’ve had the worst time obtaining the trophies for the DLC chapters. I’ve completed the requirements for all of them, and still have not received one for Redemption, and none for The Hunger. I assume this will be remedied in a future patch. I’ll start another run once the next DLC is released, so hopefully it will be fixed by then. It doesn’t affect the main storyline. It’s just irksome. I blame my perfectionist nature.

Maybe it wasn’t an accusation. Maybe it wasn’t someone telling Rachel she didn’t belong — but her entire body was tense and her jaw tightened at the question. This place was supposed to be a safe place for mutants, and yet she was being questioned. And what was worse, at least in Rachel’s mind, was that the mind that was pressing her for answers had shields up. “I don’t answer to you,” Rachel said immediately, turning on her heels to face the woman in question, a hardened look on her face. For a moment, it reminded her of butting heads with Storm over if she was their leader or not. But she didn’t know the woman in front of her, and so… the heat was there for a different reason. Her frustration on display in the only way that Rachel knew how to deal with it. By being angry. By being aggressive. By shoving people back. “It’s rude not to introduce yourself first.”

𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 ; illyana nikovelenia rasputina 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐦 ; hunter schafer 𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐦 ; anya taylor joy 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐭 ; - 𝘮𝘶𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 : illyana’s mutant ability is the ability to teleport via portals that she refers to as stepping discs. through these portals illyana can traverse through time, space, & dimensions. she does not need to have sight of where she is teleporting, as all teleportation must go through the dimension of limbo from where she can scry a safe location & time point. she can travel interstellar distances as well as short gaps, and travel through centuries -- the portion of controlling time is the area she needs most practise on. - 𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 : illyana is the sorcerer supreme of the demonic dimension known as limbo. in her own dimension, there is not a being more powerful than her. however on earth she is severely weakened due to differences in magical properties & ether. her magical abilities stems from the demonic magic that filled the void in her soul when it was ripped from her as a child. the most common form she produces her magic in is her soul sword that is crafted from the remaining pieces of her soul. - 𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘤 𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 : illyana is the hell lord of limbo; her demonic form , known as darkchylde, is fun and has hooves. when she is stuck in her darkchylde form, she struggles to exist in this plane for long periods of time -- however, as ilyana she lacks this issue. during the blip, illyana absorbed the dimension into herself to try and solve it being thrown off balance. this made her immune to telepathy as her mindscape is now effectively a version of hell. fun !! 𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 ; the x-men 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 ; nikolai & alexandra rasputin ( parents, deceased. ) mikhail rasputin ( older brother, presumed deceased. ) piotr rasputin ( older brother. ) 𝐳𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐜 ; capricorn sun. aquarius moon. scorpio rising. 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐬 ; wiki. + pinterest + bio etc tba.

WAS YOUR CHARACTER “BLIPPED” OUT? WHO IMPORTANT TO THEM WAS BLIPPED OUT, AND WHAT HAS IT FELT LIKE AFTER THOSE FIVE YEARS HAVE PASSED?

illyana wasn’t blipped -- but you’d be forgiven for mistaking as such, when the blip happened illyana was in limbo / and although the dimension exists outside of time, the sudden change in the universe fractured it’s reality . for two years illyana was stuck in this hell again as she worked to restore order and prevent demonic uprisings. mentally, this had little impact on her just because well ... she’s used to it / but physically, the extended period of time in the dimension and absorbing it into herself caused her to become more demonic / unable to balance herself between illyana and darkchylde, she was too afraid of rejection to show herself to the surviving x-men and instead chose to pretend that she had also been snapped whilst she trained her magical abilities. after the blip was reversed, she realised she could not keep hiding, and thus pretended to come back to this reality. she is still, clearly 5 years older than when she “ blipped “ but -- it’s illyana, her age is fickle, so she hopes not too many people will question it.

WHERE ARE THEY LIVING? ARE THEY LIVING WITH ANYONE?

illyana lives at the x-mansion again. she’s just vibing with the x-men, but is not unknown to teleport into her friends places when she’s hungry and wants to steal their bagels.

WHY IS YOUR CHARACTER AFFILIATED WITH WHO THEY’RE AFFILIATED WITH?

x-men and mutant rights only. loosely tangentially affiliated with other magical groups, but they will always come second to mutant rights.

WHO ARE THEIR MAJOR FRIENDS, ALLIES, AND FOES?

the x-men and she stole her brothers fiance friends !! of course, new mutants are also up here they are THE gang of dumbass misfits. allies include, all x-men and mutant supportive characters -- does not care if ur a terrorist babes we all can’t be perfect and sometimes murder IS okay !! in terms of enemies, standard x-men enemies + specifically belasco can go fuck himself for stealing illyana’s childhood.

not good besties !!! mentally and physically she could be better, always having to balance demonic forces in her mind -- she still is , at her core, a good person but that is so often overshadowed by the cold armor she wears to protect herself from unpacked childhood trauma. in terms of physical state, she’s in peak condition outside of unforseen and uncontrollable shifts into being a literal half demon goat lady with horns and a tail -- but being sexy and evil outstanding, it’s all good !!
