A Certain Romance (5/6)
Tumblr media
Pairing: Bucky x Reader
Word Count: 2,039
Warnings: bit of angst
A/N: 👀👀👀 lol
MAIN MASTERLIST | A CERTAIN ROMANCE MASTERLIST
While he’s strapped into the same suit he keeps finding himself stuck in, the night doesn’t seem to be going as bad as he imagined.
He’s waiting for you to finish getting ready, you did your hair and makeup already, you just need to put on your shoes and jewelry, you’d told him.
He remembers how you weren’t one for fancy, over-the-top restaurants; you made it clear that very first date. It comforts him that while you’re always happy to see friends, you’re not exactly thrilled and he can rely on you if he wants to leave earlier rather than later.
He hears clicks down the hall get closer and closer and he glances over to look at you, a pocket of air catching in his throat that he holds back.
You’re wearing white and Bucky thinks you look like an angel. The sleeves are long and poofy at the shoulders, a tight neckline highlighting your cleavage, and a cinched waist that makes the dress look a little shorter than it is above your knees. Your skin is glowy from moisturizing after the shower you took earlier and images of what Bucky imagines you look like rubbing lotion on your smooth legs flash in his mind.
He hopes he’s not drooling.
“Take a picture, it’ll last longer, stud.” You adjust a small strap at your ankle and he’s still trying to find something to respond, anything to stop him from gaping like a fish.
“You look beautiful.” Is all that comes out, and he knows it doesn’t do nearly enough justice to describe how you look.
“Thanks, Buck.” You tell him, visibly taken back at the lack of snark. You were expecting a little teasing, a bit of flirting to dip your toes into what the rest of the night will consist of. While Bucky’s never not complimented you, he does it often, as he does to all of his friends, but this was very… sincere. More sincere than usual.
He finally clears his throat to compose himself a little, “Are you ready to head out?”
You give him a nod and a gentle smile, walking with him to the door to exit. The walk to his car a block down isn’t far, and you laugh when Bucky offers you a piggyback ride, not knowing how you can walk in those - referring to your heels.
You can sense Bucky get a bit nervous in the car when the restaurant enters both of your lines of sight. You wrap an arm through the loop his own arm creates with his forearm resting on the middle console, your hand sliding up to gently squeeze his thick bicep, your other arm resting on top of the curve of his elbow.
“Don’t worry, if the place is too lame, I’ll say my heel’s busted and we can try and leave early.”
“Yeah, you’ll cut through that little stick on the bottom of your shoe with the butter knife?”
“Mhm,” You hum, “And leave Sam with the bill.”
He laughs at that, and laughs more when you follow up with, “I forgot my wallet by the way.”
It’s sooner rather than later that the car is parked and you two arrive outside the Italian restaurant Sam picked. He made sure to look it up this time beforehand, with your help, of course, and sees that while the restaurant is still a bit too fancy for his taste, it’s not nearly as bad as the last one he went to where he met you.
“I know you can’t get drunk, but I’m going to play a little game where I drink every time someone in here does something embarrassingly snooty.” You whisper to him, still holding onto his arm, as the waiter leads you two to the table where Sam and his date are waiting.
“You’ll blackout before the appetizer, I wouldn’t try it.” Bucky begins, but after a second thought, “Actually, maybe if you’re drunk we can leave sooner, drinks for you will be on me.”
You giggle quietly into his arm and shut yourself up as you finally arrive at the table, Sam and his date standing to greet you both.
Kisses are planted on everyone's cheeks and introductions are given out as everyone takes their seat. You sit across from Sam on Bucky’s right, his hand holding yours on your thigh. He’s not sure if he’s holding it for show, if Sam and his date can even see them holding hands, or if he’s holding your hand because he likes the feeling of your skin under his hand.
He knows the answer.
The calamari and salads are Bucky’s friend as it makes less time for talking, everyone enjoying the food. While waiting on the main dishes, though, Sam’s date, a very kind and beautiful woman, asks him the question he’s been dreading.
“So, how are you guys? Sam tells me you guys are a new couple, I love all the gushy details.”
The gushy details, she’s perfect for Sam.
“We met on one of Sam’s set-up dates, actually, and just hit it off pretty well. Nothing more to tell.” You answer, thankfully, and keep it short and sweet, hopefully enough information to change the subject.
“Oh, c’mon, y’all can do better than that.” Sam teases, a sly smile on his face.
To him, he’s teasing his friends about finally finding love after swearing against it. But, to you and Bucky, you’re being forced to tell a story you don’t know. You and Bucky should’ve hashed out some details before this, you think.
Bucky’s not the greatest liar, so he just decides to be honest.
“Well, when we met, neither of us were really looking to date anybody. We were both in a place where we didn’t feel ready for a relationship yet, but we gave it a try with each other anyway. And…” He pauses, putting his thoughts together.
“I was surprised. By her kindness, by her humor, by the way she comforts me, by the way she understands me. I expected another failed relationship, another person that either got tired of me or got fed up with who I am and the baggage I come with. But the failure never came.
“Instead I got this amazing girl, who has just as much baggage as I do and I get to accept it with open arms. I got someone who’s healed me a lot more than she knows.”
He’s sweating, and he reaches for the glass of wine at his side, fixing to do something with his hands and his mouth. Your hand is still in his on your lap, grip a bit looser now, though, and he feels your eyes on him. He’s too scared to look.
“See? That’s the kinda lovey-dovey shit I’m talking about.” Sam jokes, a bright smile on his face at the sight of his two friends, raising his glass towards the middle of the table, everyone else’s joining in a second after.
“That’s real sweet,” His date chirps, “You guys really do look in love. I’m happy for y’all.”
The entrees arrive but Bucky’s no longer hungry.
The drive home has been silent. You’ve been quiet since leaving the restaurant and bidding goodbye to Sam and his date, only holding onto his arm until the two of you were out of their sight. Unlike the walk to the restaurant, where you were whispering in his ear, clutching onto his arm, you didn’t even glance his way.
He feels like he’s about to suffocate in the car.
“Are you okay?” His voice breaks the silence.
You’re quiet for a moment before answering his question with one of your own, “What… what was that back there?”
“It was eggplant ravioli, that’s why it looked a little -”
“Bucky.”
He realizes playing dumb isn’t going to work in this situation. Of course it wouldn’t, you’re way too smart for that.
“What you said… seemed a little too... real.” You finally get out.
His mouth opens and closes again when he realizes he doesn’t have a response. It seemed real because it was real. His face appears to give away his thoughts because the second you look over at him, he’s caught. You sigh and raise your hands to cover your face in frustration.
“Bucky, the whole reason we did this in the first place was because we didn’t want a relationship! That was the whole point!” You say, your voice rising.
“I know that was the whole point,” He says, voice calmer than yours, but his resolve quickly fading as embarrassment floods his body.
“Then?!”
“Then, I didn’t do it on purpose! I didn’t mean to catch feelings, but I did!” He yells.
“Bucky, I -”
“Yeah, I know you don’t want a relationship and don’t feel the same. Don’t worry, I’ll get over it.” He snaps, voice harsh, harsher than he’s ever used on you before.
More silence.
He wants to cry. He feels so embarrassed, and so angry at himself. Why did he say that at dinner? He could’ve lied, he could’ve downplayed it a little more, he could’ve not said anything at all and let you take the reins. Instead he all but confessed his feelings for you in front of your friends.
And if that’s not enough, the argument in the car only makes him feel more embarrassed, the conversation playing over and over in his head as a reminder of much you don’t want him; of how much nobody wants him.
His jaw clenches as he swallows the lump in his throat and he sees you in his peripheries sneak a glance at him.
He couldn’t have pulled up outside your apartment building sooner.
“I’m sorry,” He says after clearing his throat. He uses the last bit of dignity he has left to try and mend at least a few of the pieces.
“Can - can we just forget about it? Please?” He asks, his heart begging for you to agree. He can deal with the unrequited feelings as long as you stick around.
“Bucky, I… I just need some time. To think. About all of this. I just - I can’t be around you knowing you’re in love with me. I’m sorry.” You step out of the car before he can respond, and his eyes close as the door shuts, leaving him alone in the car.
He hears the beeps of the buttons at your door and then a distant click, and he doesn’t have to look up from his hands in his lap to know you made it inside.
He doesn’t drive away yet, though. He looks up at the roof of his car to try and stop the watering of his eyes and lets out a harsh sigh.
He eventually puts the car in drive again and roughly grabs the wheel, taking himself home, unaware that you watched him from the apartment building lobby.
The first thing he sees when he steps into his own apartment is a small plant that you brought him a few days ago. It sits on a small table he has by the door next to a dish for both sets of his keys.
In a moment of anger he grabs the potted plant and throws it as hard as he can across the room, shattering against a cabinet door in his kitchen in front of him.
“Shit,” He curses, going quickly to the kitchen to begin picking up the broken ceramic.
He separates the pieces of ceramic and cups his hands around the dirt to try and put it into a pile for him to transfer into another cup of some kind. A tear hits the side of his palm and he scoffs, annoyed at himself.
“Why the fuck are you crying, it’s just a fucking stupid plant,” He mumbles, voice cracking.
He sees the roots untangled from one another and ripped in some places. The plant is going to die, regardless if he puts it in another pot or gives it all the water in the world. No amount of care will save it.
He sniffs and drops the plant back on the ground, slumping back and leaning against the bottom cabinet under his sink.
“Fuck.” He says to himself, hand coming up to his face to wipe away stray tears.

a song about it raining somewhere else
title: a song about it raining somewhere else characters: chuck taylor x trent beretta word count: 3822 part: 1/1 warnings: mild cursing, and like that’s kinda it? maybe mild angst? but also i’m a baby and it becomes fluff by the end? a/n: howdy, this is not another i’m back i’m back piece as much as it honestly is. no, see this time- this is actually a gift! 2 days ago was @trentjinshi’s birthday and i wanted to write him something! so i sat down for like 6 hours with my goopy goblin gay brain and spit out this obvious magnum opus. so, like, don’t hate it please. also hugest happy birthday to emil again!! yeehaw... i’ve technically already sent this to u
You know, of all days to have the soul crushing realization that you’ve secretly been in love with your best friend, Trent should have expected it to happen on Valentine’s Day.
The man had garbage luck anyways, and good things seemingly never happened to him. So when Chuck animatedly told him he had a date that night with some girl, Trent’s heart shouldn’t have blown apart like he had been shot. Sure, he pretended to be supportive of his buddy, returning his radiant smile despite the effect never reaching his eyes, And yeah, he wished him all the best, telling the taller man he hoped it went well.
But did Trent mean any of that? Fuck no! He was dying on the inside, mourning the loss of a relationship and love he didn’t even know he wanted! Perhaps he should have considered himself lucky that he didn’t start bawling his eyes out on the spot. The New Yorker had a tendency to wear his heart on his sleeve, so the crying really was not out of the question at that moment. But he contained his feelings somehow, moving on through the rest of that afternoon like he was trudging through a snowstorm. Slow, cold, and slowly dying from the inside out.
So that led him here, sitting in his car as the rain started to come down, refusing to turn the damn thing on. He didn’t want to go back to his hotel room. Because if he did, it would remind him of the obvious. He went home alone tonight.
Chuck wasn’t alone. His friend had a probably beautiful person with a perfect personality sitting across from him at a fancy restaurant. A person who wasn’t him. Why couldn’t Trent be his perfect date? He would laugh at his jokes, softly hold his hand as they walked in from the parking lot, pull his chair out for him, admire him like he was the sun-
A harsh banging came from his left, rhythmically tapping against the glass of his car window in time with the rain drops. Trent’s head jerked up from where it had defeatedly slumped against the steering wheel to see who was trying to get his attention.
It was a security guard, holding an umbrella in one hand and wavering him off with another, politely telling him to leave the premises as the arena building they were at was closing. To be honest, getting a ticket from not leaving and instead rotting in that parking lot forever sounded like a far better time than he was having. But, he didn’t have a choice. Story of his life.
Trent started up his car, quickly leaving off into the vast night with only his thoughts to keep him company. And that was rapidly becoming annoying. The singular thing on his mind was one person, and how all this time, his feelings were so obvious. Every time he even glanced in his friend’s direction his heart rate would spike. Before now, he had chalked that up to coincidence or - considering it was Trent and how his body loved to torture him - underlying health conditions. Evidently, it was neither of those things.
One would think he would catch on to his festering crush sooner; considering he thought the entire world of Chuck and whenever he had to go more than a few days without seeing him, he would get a weird sense of longing to be back in his presence, but nothing ever wanted to work out that way. Life thought it would be much funnier if Trent felt like he was being ripped apart at the seams by a simple sentence.
Between the still processing of what it even meant to have a crush on your best friend, and knowing that right now he was out with some other person having the time of his life, Trent was not feeling great as he drove down the freeway. Grumbling under his breath, he flicked the radio on to fill the car with something other than his problems. A song the brunette had never heard before crackled to life, being about part of the way through.
By the time we get there, everybody will be drunk The chairs will be on tables and the band will be unplugged We're gonna look real good, but we're gonna look real rude I'm sorry I'm not sorry that I'm-
Fucking perfect! The last person to mess with the radio in Trent’s car was Chuck, and bastard left it on one of his stupid country stations. Trent didn’t even like country music! That didn’t stop him, however, from a few days ago when they were driving from city to city and let Chuck put on whatever he liked, even if it was something he was going to hate. He would make tiny sacrifices like that all the time for his partner, because he knew it would earn him one of those sunlit smiles. Trent really would do anything to make Chuck happy, and had been since they met.
Late to the party with you Oh, who needs confetti? We're already falling into the groove And who needs a crowd when you're happy at a party for two? The world can wait 'Cause I'm never late to the party if I'm late to the party with you
It... It was a love song?
“Throw me off a fucking bridge.” Trent mumbled to himself as he exited an off ramp. Seriously, who out there was tormenting him and making him have possibly the worst day ever? What omnipotent being did he piss off? He thought he was an alright dude, not getting into other people’s business and sort of keeping to himself. Most days he made an attempt to be somewhat nice to others and never did any of that vile or cruel shit. And yet, he was cursed to drive home while listening to a love song in a genre that he hated, and only helped to remind him more of his best friend.
Let's promise when we get in that we'll try to get right out Fake a couple conversations, make the necessary rounds These kinda things just turn into "Who's leaving here with who?" But I just want 'em all to see me come in late to the party with you
Wasn’t that a funny line. Wanting others to see the person you’re with because of how much you loved them? Trent understood that. Whenever he would go anywhere with Chuck, he would always want people to know he was there with him- whether he realized it or not.
He could talk for hours about him. It could be the simple telling of a funny story, or gushing about how good he was in the ring. Or how great of a friend he was. That made Trent wonder about what Chuck would be like if they were together. His mind wandered, dreaming up scenarios and infinite possibilities as he pulled into his hotel’s parking garage.
The musing didn’t stop when he killed the engine, happily ending that fucking song that was starting to piss him off with how cute it was. Trent pushed himself out of the car, gathering his singular bag from the trunk and wandering inside through the rain. Which, if anyone was curious, was even worse than it was when he left. It was coming down in buckets now, being slung into the New Yorker’s face by the wind.
Checking in was easy enough, having the briefest of conversations with the man at the desk who happened to have a thick southern accent.
Chuck had an accent, but only when he drank a lot. It took about 3 and a half beers for it to come out, but by that point he didn’t care all that much to hide it. He wouldn’t be trashed, as he was a pretty solid drinker and had made putting strong shit back a hobby over the last few years. Trent knew exactly how it sounded, though. A smooth Kentucky accent that always caused him to punctuate the last word of his sentences and pronounce certain things differently. Never anything like “y’all” or something southern like that, after all Chuck wasn’t that dime store cowboy they worked with.
The thing Trent remembered the most about Chuck’s accent was how he said his name. He would draw it out, almost like he was whining, except it was low in his voice and always accompanied by a wide grin. One that’s toothy like Cheshire Cat, and annoyingly sweet like bubblegum. Trent idly wondered if he tasted like bubblegum too, but the thought turned vivid fantasy was interrupted for a moment by the elevator reaching his floor.
The brunette slowly approached his room, still partially entranced by the ideas he had created in his mind as he unlocked his door and slipped in. From there, it felt like he wasn’t even alive anymore. Not in a morbid sense, but as in he wasn’t participating in the concept of reality at that moment. Trent was so disconnected from his actions, it was almost as though he was outside of his body and looking in from somewhere else. So much so, that when he snapped out of his revere from his phone buzzing, he was lying in bed wearing only his boxers.
Not that what was on his phone was of any importance to him. All Trent saw were notifications for things he didn’t care about, the only thing sticking out was a short text from Orange sending him more condolences over his current “issue”. Damn, he was acting like someone had died, not his friend’s heart being broken. Trent didn’t bother responding, tossing the device back on the bedside table and rolling over to face away from it.
The alarm clock on the other stand read “10:17 p.m.”, blinking at him like the piece of shit was broken. It also only now occurred to Trent that he had never turned the lights on while he was basically astral projecting. So he was bathed in darkness, with the only illumination being that digital clock and the street lights below outside the window.
Was he going to fall asleep at a respectable time? Because deep in his bones he could feel the shroud of tiredness creeping through him from all of the emotional energy he drained today. And with that, Trent grabbed one of the unused pillows and wrapped himself around it, cuddling it tightly and not bothering to get under the bed covers.
Maybe if he tried hard enough, Trent could pretend the pillow was something else. --
Who in the hell was knocking at his door at - the New Yorker stopped his angry brain tirade to peek at the clock again - 11:53 at night? He had only gotten to sleep an hour and it was cut short by who knew what. If this was Orange coming to tell him he had broken another hotel microwave by “forgetting to take the metal spoon out of his mac and cheese”, Trent was going to fucking kill him.
Getting up from where he lay, Trent stumbled blearily across the room to the door. In those few seconds, it processed with him that his hair must have come untied while he was sleeping because it was messily draped around his shoulders. Among that, he was still only dressed in boxers, riding rather low on his hips. Maybe he had a restless sleep even though it was quick?
He didn’t care what he looked like though as he slowly pulled the door open with a yawn and blinked from the harsh light flooding in from the hallway. Trent prepared to open his mouth and berate his shorter friend when he heard a sniffle come from in front of him.
Chuck was standing on the other side of the doorway, soaking wet from the rain. By the look on his face, it seemed as though he had been crying as well, with red eyes and a running nose. His eyes didn’t meet Trent’s as he all but whispered, “H-hey, man.”
Did the longer haired brunette care that his friend was ice cold and drenched from head to toe? No. That was why without words, he dragged his friend into the room and hugged him tightly, letting the hotel door slip closed on its own. Chuck didn’t need to be told twice to hug back, nearly crushing Trent from the strength of his shaking arms.
They stayed like that for a good while, with Trent rubbing soothing circles into his back and letting him rest his head on his shoulder when he began to weep again. That was before he slowly drew back, silently taking Chuck’s hand and guiding him to his bed so he could sit. Trent grabbed the comforter and wrapped it around his friend, figuring he could just use a blanket later when he needed to sleep.
“I... didn’t even tell you- what’s wrong..?” murmured the Kentuckian, slouching in on himself and bringing his knees up so they were closer to his chest. He must have been really cold. Trent paused for a moment, looking with a pained yet sympathetic smile.
“Don’t need to. You’re upset, and I gotta fix that.” He wasn’t sure who hurt him, or even what, but just let it be known he was going to destroy whatever it was.
“Well, uh, t-thank you?”
“Yeah, dude. I-” Love you. “Care about you. You’re my friend and shit. Hurts to see you cry.” With that, Trent carefully maneuvered around Chuck and hopped off the bed to go rifle through his clothes for something dry he could wear. And- probably some pants for himself. When he first opened the door, he couldn’t help but notice Chuck gave him the slightest look up and down, with his cheeks going red afterwards. Trent assumed it was only because he was cold, and the warmth from his bedroom had fucked with his internal body temperature.
While digging through his bags trying to find some of the clothes he always packed for his friend - and if it were any other day than today, Trent would have told you it was because he was just being a nice guy. He knew better than that now. - Chuck began to talk again. “Date ditched me...”
“They didn’t show up?”
Chuck sighed. “No, she did. But- when her ex came around... She would’a rather been with him.”
Trent grabbed the extra clothes and stood, turning around to face Chuck who was staring off into the corner. Considering how already destroyed his heart already was from earlier, he was a bit surprised it still had a few more pieces that could shatter at this sight. Coming back over, he set the pile to one side of him, then sat back down on the other. “Chuck...”
“I don’t know what I expected? Every girl, or hell- every guy, I’ve ever tried to date has never worked out for me. I don’t get it.” Oh, Trent should not have been so happy to hear those words. Well, he wasn’t happy to hear most of them, and was hurting for his friend, but two of them in particular stuck out to him like a sore thumb. Every guy. That meant Chuck had been on dates with men. That meant, even though it was fucked up to think about this at the moment, that Trent still had a chance.
“You just haven’t found the right one, man. None of those assholes from before deserve you anyways.” Chuck brought his gaze back over to Trent, eyes glassy and expression- disbelieving. His hair was matted to his head, still wet in some places, but mostly stuck in small spots to his forehead. Everything else about him was still about the same caliber as that, slowly drying and clinging to parts of his body that weren’t being disrupted by the comforter.
“Or maybe I didn’t deserve them...” Something- came over Trent then. There wasn’t a word for the mix of emotions he felt upon hearing that. But what he could feel were his hands taking either side of his best friend’s face and holding his head up to where he would look him in the eyes.
“That’s not true, you and I both know that. Anyone in the world would be lucky to have you.”
Chuck honest to god laughed at that and tilted his head. “Name one person.”
Fuck. For all intents and purposes, the answer he desperately wanted to give was ‘Me’, but that never came out of his mouth. Instead, it was like Trent was suspended in fear, unable to say what he wanted for the thought of being rejected. Or somehow even worse, him thinking it was a joke and getting upset with him. So, Trent said nothing, trying to think of a different response that would be true, but didn’t give himself away.
That was the nail in the coffin, though. Chuck took his silence as an answer, unable to provide a single person who could possibly want to be with him. The other man shook Trent’s hands away from his face, hurt welling up in his eyes with a grimace as he moved to grab the clothes that were gotten for him.
“See,” Chuck hobbled to a standing position, holding the clean garments close to his sodden chest like it was going to protect him from the pain he was feeling. Trent, just say something, anything, he yelled to himself whilst watching Chuck shuffle over to the bathroom and pull the door open. He flicked his eyes down to the floor for a moment before coming back up and locking onto Trent’s. “No one could ever love me...”
“Chuck-” Trent was too late, Chuck had already disappeared into the bathroom and locked the door behind him. And God damn it, his stomach had sunk to the depth of his being, twisting and turning like he was going to be sick. He should have said something. Even if it meant ruining the only thing he really had left to care about. There was his job, his other friends, his family and that; and while they meant a lot to him as well, he truly believed in that moment, and probably for some while now, that Chuck was his world.
As goofy and kind of bullshit as it was to hear, that’s what he felt like. That this guy he’s known for a good chunk of his life was his sun, moon, and every star in the sky. And Trent knew he’s never felt that way about another person. He knew that no other person on this Earth - or fuck, any other planet - could beam at him when they pull an upset and win a match together like he could. No one else made his chest feel warm whenever they complimented him quite the same way that Chuck did. There wasn’t a soul who had the same giggle, the wit, the determination, the personality- fucking any of it. No one had quite what his best friend had, and that was why he loved him.
Trent had no idea how long Chuck was going to be in there, or if he was ever going to come out. Knowing him, he could stay in there all night, not wanting to face the world again- let alone his friend. Even still, he got up from where he was and placed himself a few paces away from his bathroom door. Within his head, he hyped himself up, vowing that no matter if he got scared or felt like everything was going to go wrong, the New Yorker was going to tell him the truth.
Approximately 4 minutes later - if you asked Trent it felt like 10 years - Chuck finally emerged from his hiding place, dressed in some of his friend’s clothes and with shockingly drier hair. Not sure why he was so surprised that he had run a towel through it or something, but that didn’t matter. The taller man seemed confused as to why Trent was standing at the door, but before he could ask what was happening, Trent said, “I do.”
Chuck squinted at him with a, “What?” but it came out choked off and shaky, like he wasn’t prepared to speak.
“You said no one could ever love you, and that’s not true. Because I love you,” He wanted to protest, but now that Trent was talking, he couldn’t stop. “And I didn’t realize it until today, but I seriously am so in love with you that I don’t think I could picture my life without you. You mean everything to me and I would do anything for you just to see your beautiful smile or hear you say my name. And I know it sounds like I’m lying and that I’m trying to make you feel better, but I’m not. If I think about it, I feel like I’ve loved you forever but never realized it, and I wish I could have known sooner. Because you need to know that you’re the most amazing person I’ve ever met, and I would be the luckiest guy in the world to even have a chance with you-”
“Trent-”
“I love the way you purposefully send me a string of those stupid emojis over text because you know it annoys me. I love how you can make anyone feel better with just one smile and your passion for loving others. I love how much you love animals and how every dog you see, you consider kidnapping-'' Trent had become so caught up in his declaration that he hadn’t noticed his friend had moved from in front of him and Chuck’s lips were on his.
Before he could even do anything; not even get a gasp at the sudden action, Chuck was already pulling away, breathing as if he had just run a mile. His face was bright red and his hands were holding either of Trent’s arms as he searched his face for a reaction. Or anything really.
“I- I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have-” It felt as though Trent was living in one of those shitty romantic comedies he secretly liked to watch, because he was the one who cut Chuck off while speaking with an somehow even more desperate kiss. He felt him respond almost instant, bringing one of his hands up to Trent’s face to cup it gently as his own arms latched cautiously onto Chuck’s hips. And that was where they stayed, for who knew how long, but every second of it was exactly where they wanted to be.
You know, of all days to have the life-changing realization that you’re secretly in love with your best friend, Trent - and Chuck for that matter - hadn’t expected it to happen on (the day after) Valentine’s Day.

The Housekeeper Part 6 (The End)
Tumblr media
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 3.5 Part 4 Part 5
Geralt x Reader
Modern!AU
Warning: mention of sex, smut and swearing
Summary: You moved to the big city not too long ago. And you became the housekeeper to the handsome bachelor, Geralt Rivia. At first your relationship is purely professional, but what happens when you start developing feelings for him?
And finally, Geralt saw a little bit of light in his lonely life and all he can do is thank you for it.
You changed his life and perspective of life.
You moved into his penthouse after four months of dating. Waking up next to such a handsome and kind man was all you ever wanted and more.
“I’m thinking about hiring a new housekeeper.” Geralt said one morning as he made breakfast while you waited for him, sitting at the table.
“What?”
“A new housekeeper, you can’t clean this place, work and plan our wedding at the same time.” Geralt wasn’t wrong, it was a bit too much, a month ago, he asked you on a fancy date, which you gladly accepted. You went to the restaurant only to find it empty since he rented the whole place. You weren’t exactly surprised that he proposed to you, with the way he treated and looked at you, you were basically already his wife.
“I sure can! Don’t underestimate me, Geralt.”
“I’m not underestimating you, My Love. All I’m saying is that you don’t need the stress. I just, I don’t want in the future when you think back to our wedding, for you to only remember the stress of the preparation.”
“Anything but a housekeeper, Geralt.”
“Hm?”
“I don’t want someone to come here every day, get all wet and bothered by you walking around shirtless. I don’t want someone to replace me. I can clean the house and work and plan the wedding.”
“My Love, no one will ever replace you. Never. Ever.” Geralt understood your concern since his love for you blossomed when you were his employee. “Then how about a wedding planner?”
“That might be a better idea, but I want you to have some saying in it. Don’t just leave it up to me as you did with our home.” It was true, Geralt completely leaned back and let you redecorate his home, he always said “If you like it, so will I.” and just left it all to you. But for the wedding you wanted him to participate, choose colours, flowers, decorations and if he wanted something, he should say it.
“Hmm.” was all he said and you rolled your eyes with a smile on your face. His usual response to 90% of the things was the low ‘hmm’ that only he could do so perfectly.
***
To your surprise, Geralt actually looked rather interested in planning the wedding. He even argued about the colour of the tablecloth. You were quite surprised when he mentioned that he always wanted his wedding to be in a nice mansion that is surrounded by nature.
Your wedding planner, Natasha, found just the place. A gorgeous old mansion with a huge garden far away from the city. It was the perfect place, but only once you saw it all decorated and ready for the wedding when it all sank in.
You were about to marry Geralt Rivia. The millionaire, handsome, muscular and silver-haired man. The one and only. He was like a collectible, the rarest kind. But of course, those were only the materialistic things, the surface of who Geralt really was.
Geralt was the man who fell in love, yet decided to deny it. And only when his jealousy got the best of him was he able to confess.
Geralt was the man who you went on a three day trip for your anniversary into a skiing resort only to get snowed in. Geralt was the man who made sure that even if you couldn’t leave the bungalow, you were still comfortable. He was the man who you had numerous baths with and passionate yet rough sex to keep you warm.
Geralt was the man who bought you tampons and ice cream when you were on your period and you were in too much pain to move.
Geralt was the man who brought you a new car, just so he would be assured that you are safe in the traffic.
Geralt was the man who let you redecorate his whole place and all he could concentrate on once it was done is the light in your eyes and the smile on your face as you walked around.
Geralt was the man who tried his best not to let a single drop of tear escape his eyes once he was you in your beautiful dress walking towards him, to become his wife. He was the man who once you were alone, let that tear out, but only for you to see, and you were the woman who caught that tear with your thumb as you leaned up to kiss him.
And Jaskier was the man who let all his tears out on the wedding, concerning the guests, even the priest if he was okay. But once Jaskier was on the stage, singing and playing his guitar as you danced with your husband, he stopped crying and started smiling.
***
Two years after the wedding, Geralt and you were happily married. Sure, your new job had some concerns and co-workers that Geralt didn’t like, you worked it all out.
And now, with a baby on the way, you wondered what your husband will say. Despite being together for so long, children and the topic of a family was never brought up which might be strange but it was true.
One night, you were sitting on the couch, watching a movie. The movie was a family film, so you decided to bring the topic up.
“I don’t understand why did they have so many children? They can’t even control them.”
“Hmm.” was all you heard so you needed a new technique.
“I quite like the little girl though.”
“Yeah, she’s cute.”
“Geralt, would you want to have children?” this seemed to surprise him.
“Well, to be honest, I didn’t. But I never wanted to get married either, so I don’t know anymore. I mean I don’t completely hate the idea, but I might not want right now. Why are you pregnant?” his question was a joke, but when you didn’t laugh with him, he knew something was up.
“You say you are not ready and you want to wait right?” he could only nod as he listened to you intensely. “Seems like the little one has different ideas,” you say and wait for him to get it.
“Fuck.” was all he said. To be honest he sounded more nervous than angry which was a good sign.
“Don’t swear! The baby will hear you!”
“How long?”
“How long have I known or how long into the pregnancy I am?”
“Yes.”
“I have known for two days now. My doctor discovered it during my regular check-up and since he couldn’t predict how long I was and sent me to the appropriate doctor, I will find out tomorrow. But if I had to guess, I’d say about three weeks? When we did it in-“
“In the shower.” he finished your sentence.
“Yes. Are you angry?”
“No, why would I be? Shocked? Yes. But not angry.”
“Well, seems like your pull-out game is not as strong as you might have thought. But I’m happy. Are you?”
“Hmm.” Geralt was deep in thought. He contemplated whether he would be a good father or not, so many thoughts ran in his head.
“I was scared when the doc told me. I was scared of your reaction but more about myself. I’m still not sure if I’m ready to be a mother, or if I will be a good one. But I’m very sure about the fact that I will keep this baby. I think we will be able to do it, I mean Jaskier was a tough one but we managed him, right?” Geralt smiled a little.
“I want a girl.” he said.
“We will have to wait to get to know that, but I’m happy. Are you.”
“Yes. I’m happy. I’m going to be a father! We are going to be parents, Love! I need to read books, and we will need a house! A big house! I’m not stopping at one child! I want a whole army of them! All girls, as gorgeous as you are My Love. And the boys, strong like me!”
You smiled as your husband went on and on about his plans. It was great to see him so excited after how concerned he looked a moment ago.
He stood up, gesturing around, to be honest, you stopped listening to him after he started coming up with names.
You stood up grabbed his face and kissed him. It didn’t take him a moment to get his hands on your hips as he pulled you closer to himself.
“I love you, Y/N.” he said when he pulled away and looked into your eyes. His gold ones glistening in the sunlight.
“I love you too Geralt.”
From a simple housekeeper to his wife and now to the mother of his child. You went a long way, but your love for him and his love for you never changed.
And never will.
A/N: The last part is nothing but fluff, since Geralt deserves that. Hope you enjoyed the series!

“You were going to let me go”
Okay so maybe your plan to find out if Steve Harrington was in love you wasn’t ethical, but it was happening so that didn’t matter anymore. You and Steve have this unspoken agreement that you both liked each other; well at least you thought that you did. Every time you two were together the brief touches, unusually long glances and cringe worthy flirting made that obvious, right? . But Steve was yet to make a move so maybe you’re over thinking it all. However that didn’t stop you from making a plan that would hopefully reveal his feelings to you. It goes that you get one of the boys you both went to high school with to ask you on a date by any means necessary, then while on your Friday dinner date with Steve and Robin you announce said date, Steve will not be happy and stop you from going on said date and declare his feelings for you. It may not happen as smoothly as you would hope, but optimism makes the world go round.
O’Keeffe’s bar on a Thursday afternoon was relatively quite which made for a boring shift. Sitting behind the bar watching the regulars slowly sipping their drinks made the time go even slower. You needed to leave early if you wanted to get to quarry. Your old high school class was having a get together for their first spring break as college students, although most of them hadn’t gone to college and were just going along to get shit faced. What better opportunity to find a date than with a bunch of drunk guys who have nothing better to do with their lives. Holding your head up on your palm, you hear the bell above the door ring and in steps a younger looking man. Upon further inspection you realise that your luck might be changing, and cheap alcohol and fake flirting at the quarry may not be on your cards tonight. Eric Pine, ex Hawkins high star football player and newly qualified bank teller had taken a seat on a stool at the end of the bar. You walk down and stop in front of him “What can I get you?”, you say smiling at big as you can while twirling a rag between your fingers. He looks up from the bar and nets your eyes, lighting up when he realises who you are “I don’t care Y/N, just make it strong” “Rough night, huh?” you say reaching for the vodka on the shelf behind you “oh you have no idea” he laughs haphazardly. You set the drink down in front of him with a nod “Anything I can help with?” He laughs again and nods down to his glass “yeah just keep these coming and I’ll be right as rain” “whatever you say captain”. After a while of chatting you figure out the cause of Eric’s sadness ,Mallory , his high school sweetheart, has decided that they aren’t working and she can’t “see a forever” in him. “I get that I’m not that exciting guy I was in high school but I was in for the long run Y/N” he looks as if he’s about to cry. “You’re a great guy Eric, I’m one hundred percent certain that you’ll find your forever girl” “You are ?” you place a hand over his “I am , and if it makes you feel any better I don’t think the guy I see as a forever likes me that way so.... yeah love sucks”. Eric looks up from your hands and gives a sympathetic look “Well if he doesn’t he’s an idiot, I mean look at you Y/N, I don’t think I’ve meet a guy who hasn’t liked you that way” you laugh out loud causing some heads to turn “Now you’re just saying things”, he shakes his head, “cross my heart and hope to die”. By last call compliments had been thrown back and forth and you were hopeful of him asking you out. “Hey Y/N what are you doing Saturday?” He smirks, you look up to the ceiling taping it your cheek “uh nothing I don’t think”. You’d never seen Eric smile as wide, not even when Tina announced free booze at her annual Halloween party two years ago, “great maybe we can go out see a movie or get dinner or something and see if we’re each other’s forever”. You laugh and nod “yeah I’d like that”. Phase one of your plan was complete.
Friday evening at 6:30 you pull into Hurley's Burgers and went straight to your regular booth. Steve and Robin were sat beside each other chatting amongst themselves but turned to look as you slid into the seat across from them. They say hey in unison as you place your bag on the seat beside you “hey guys I’ve got news” “oh news, that sounds promising” Robin says arching her eyebrow placing her hands on the table. Steve looks at her in disgust “yeah...no every time Y/N says she’s got news it’s her way of making us do things for her”. You scoff teaching across the table to slap his shoulder “I do not” “uh yeah you do it’s always hey guys I’ve got news you’re cleaning my back yard with me before my parents get home and kill me or hey guys I’ve got news I’m not able to babysit my neighbours kids like I said so... guess which two people just gained a weekend job”. Robin looks from Steve to you “he’s got you there Y/N” you sigh “okay... I may have done that once or twice but this time the only thing you guys need to do is be happy for me”. Steve looks skeptical “whys that?” “Well...” you start “I got myself a date”. Robin laughs in shock while Steve chokes on air sitting up straight in his seat “wow Y/N I never thought I’d see the day” Robin says clapping slowly, Steve stays silent. That’s good right, that he’s speechless?. “Wow thanks you guys it’s so nice having friends that are confident in my abilities to attract men” you say sarcastically. The waitress comes and takes your order and as she leaves conversation turns back to your date. Steve finally speaks “so this date, who’s the lucky guy?” “You guys remember Eric, Eric Pine”. Robin nods “how could we forget he was the talk of the school after Billy and Steve of course” Steve shakes his head “you don’t remember him?” You say shocked. Steve again shakes his head “no I remember him alright, I  just thought you had better taste you know, you’re going on a date with the douche bag of the century” you laugh “ you’re one to talk Steve” “hey I’ve changed, I can guarantee he hasn’t”. This time it’s your turn to shake your head “ that’s where you're wrong, he was really sweet and funny and you know what I don’t care what you think Steve, this is first guy in so long that’s shown any interest in me so I will enjoy my date with him on Saturday regardless of what you think. You both sit in silence, Robin stirs her drink, and the sound of ice hitting glass fills the awkward air. You start to stand “I’m going to use the bathroom, you coming Rob?” She nods “yeah sure” she stands and slides out past Steve. When you reach the bathroom Robin stands arms across her chest staring at you “what?” you snap. She rolls her eyes “I think I should be the one asking you that, a date, what the fuck Y/N I thought you like Steve?” You sigh “I do” “then why are you doing this”. You hoist yourself up into the sink “I have a plan” “never good” Robin says following pursuit and sitting next to you on the sinks “I thought that if I got a date , Steve would realise his feelings for me and try to stop it or something, I don’t know but I guess that was stupid, look at us now”. Robin places her hands on your shoulders and shakes them a little “oh my god Y/N, do you really think he’s not head over heels in love with you” “ Robin you’re just a romantic, if he did he would have said something, pulled me aside and told me instead of arguing”. Robins jumps off the sink and stands in front of you “that is his way of pulling you aside” “whatever you say Rob I’m going to pee see you out there”. You walk into a stall, and as you close your door you hear another one open with a cream and long sigh being let out by the girl. The rest of the dinner is quiet with the odd bit of small talk but other than that no mention of the date arises. You leave earlier than usual and sleep the pain away.
Saturday evening comes quickly; you sit in your living room staring at the phone on the wall. Maybe Robin was right maybe Steve does feel the same and he’ll realise what happened yesterday was a mistake and he’ll rush to phone to call and tell me to cancel my date because he loves me. The digital clock flashes 6:59 and your hope is gone Steve was never going to call who are you kidding. A beep from outside brings you back to reality, you pick up your coat and bag and leave the house to go to some fancy restaurant you’d rather not be at.
Fast forward an hour later and you’re walking up Steve’s drive way with tears building in your eyes and shoes in your hand. You just couldn’t do it, how could you when Steve lived 5 blocks away and you knew he was sitting home alone probably watching Risky Business for the 300th time. You made it to Eric’s car before telling him you suddenly felt so sick and proceeded to fake nearly throwing up, he helped you back to your house and told you to call him when you’re feeling better to reschedule. You wait until you know he’s long gone before you leave your house to begin your trek to Steve’s. You knock on the door and step back onto the porch. The door swings open and there he is your forever, wearing an old Hawkins high T-shirt and a pair of striped pyjama bottoms and a stupid look on his face. He looks you up and down and before he can speak you push past him and wait for him I’m the living room. When he enters she start to talk “Y/N wha” you cut him off “you were going to let me go” the tears are start to fall “What?” Steve’s confused as he steps forward and reaches out in an attempt to heal your arm before you pull away. “You were going to let me go” “Y/N I’m really confused right now”. You throw yourself onto his couch “I guess it’s my own fault, I mean I saw it for myself yesterday” Steve sits beside you this time you let him touch you “Is this about me yelling at you yesterday, if it is I’m sorry Y/N, you know how I get” you sigh lying back in the couch cushions but not enough that you couldn’t look at him “it’s not that Steve”. He’s even more confused now “look Steve I had this crazy idea that you might like me just as much as I like you and when I told you about the date yesterday I wanted you to tell me not to go because you like me and then you didn’t so I thought, well maybe he’ll call before I leave and tell me not to go, but you didn’t you were letting me go so I was wrong...my plan failed ...you don’t like me”. Steve sits in silence just like the day before except this time he’s looking at you with his mouth hanging slightly open, you turn away from him and face the window. “You’re right Y/N I don’t like you” you laugh “geez thanks Steve way to kick a girl when’s she’s down” he pulls at your arm and you turn to face him “I don’t like you Y/N, I love you”. Now it’s your turn to stare at him in silence mouth hanging open “you what?” “I love you” he says it with so much confidence you don’t know what to do. Steve resolves that issue though and leans in for a kiss, when you finally pull apart you whisper “I love you too, Steve” “I know”. You push him backwards onto the couch “Hey don’t get too cocky” “you love it” “I still can’t believe you were going to let me go” “look I was never the brightest bulb” “You’re not wrong” now it was his turn to push you back onto the couch, starting the night of making up for lost time.

Issue 6:Love thief
Izuku took a sip of the black coffee he'd been given(the barista had insisted-despite the glare of the anti-mutant manager-as a thank you for saving her younger brother,Yuuga, and that was the story of how he met one of Aoyama's older sister's)as he swung through the city in the night,on the look out for crime. He stopped to rest on top of a random apartment building but kept his eyes pealed. After a minute, his Spider Sense(is what he's decided to call it) went off.
"Stop right there!"yelled out a police officer(Izuku's face twisted in distate)at a blonde,bun-haired girl about Izuku's age in a black catsuit.Said girl ran off, carrying bags of presumably money or perhaps other things. She giggled.
"You'll never take me alive!"She practically taunted.Izuku swung his way a few feet in front of her and she ran into him, stumbling back in surprise.
"Who're you?"
"I'm Spiderman.Return what you stole and we can forget this ever happened."
She cackled,"You're funny!I like you!"She looked at him right in the eye as she spoke.
"Listen-OW!"He spilled his coffee over himself.
She laughed and ran off.He tried to chase after her, only to trip over his own to feet and fall flat on his face.By the time he got up,she was nowhere in sight.
"What was THAT?!"
-
He went home after that, embarrased. He removed his coffee-stained binder and went to sleep. When he woke up,it was 7:00A.M.He put on a clean binder and joined Mom in watching the news, hoping to see something about the girl from last night. He frowned at seeing Fujioka.
"Last night,Black Cat,a well-known thief, robbed a bank.Spiderman tried to stop her but failed."The tv showed the embarrasing incident from last night and Izuku's jaw dropped.
"They caught that on video?!"
"That is an astonishingly good camera angle."
"Or perhaps, could they be connected? Two Mutants in the same area at once is a big coincidence."Izuku stood up and stomped out, into the bathroom.Would Fujioka ever get off his back?!
-
"Are you okay?"Was the first thing Kacchan said as they walked to school.
"Yeah, just humiliated."Kacchan slung an arm around him and he snuggled into his side, not caring that his brain was screaming at him.He stood up straight(as opposed to snuggling gayly)when the school entered their vision.
The day went along fine until lunch time. They noticed Mineta laughing at something on his phone.
"What's so funny?"Izuku asked himself.Jirou scowled as they looked at Mineta.
"Knowing Mineta,it's probably something gross."
As if he heard them,he turned his head towards their table.
"Oh hey Jirou,"He said casually as if they were friends and they looked infuriated,"I was just watching this video of Spiderfreak-"Izuku sucked in a breath and the rest of the table glared at him as well,"-making an idiot of himself.Wanna see it?"
"His name is Spiderman."Sero snapped as Kacchan stood up.
"Who cares what his name is?He's just a muti-"He was cutoff by Kacchan punching him hard enough to send him flying.Students gasped but didn't help him.
"Listen, you piece of grape shit-"Kacchan picked him up by his collar,"Don't talk about Mutants that way or i'll do way worse.Got it?"
Mineta nodded vigorously, petrified and Kacchan dropped him. Both went back to their seats. The cafeteria was dead silent.
"That.was.Awesome!"Uraraka cheered.
"Why's that?I'm just being a good person."
"Uh,HELLO,earth to Bakugou-You just punched Mineta!"Kaminari in a 'duh' voice,"Nobody's ever stood up to him like that before!"
Kacchan shrugged,"Well, you should. Some people deserve to be punched."He clenched his fist.
Izuku could tell he was thinking of the time he punched his birth mother. He leaned forward, placing his hands on his, causing Kacchan to look at him in surprise."They really do."
Kacchan smiled slowly.Sero grinned,"Uh,should we leave you two alone?"
"Shut up,Sero."
"I'm not hearing a nooooooo."
-
Black Cat appeared again after the last school bell rang and Izuku raced to change into his costume, climbing out the bathroom window.
"Alright,Black Cat!This time,i got you!"
"Are you hitting on me?"
Izuku sputtered,"What?No!I'm gay!"
Black Cat looked dissapointed for a seconds before her expression brightend again,"Oh?Is there a special guy i don't know about?"Izuku's mind went to Kacchan and he slapped his cheeks.
"Stop talking that way! You're not my friend!"He was stunned as she looked hurt before she chuckled.
"That's what they all say."
Suddenly,Uraraka popped out from behind Black Cat and jumped on her back, surprising her."I got her,Spiderman!Catch her!"Izuku nodded and shot webbing at Black Cat's feet, trapping her.
"Well, hello, beautiful."Black Cat flirted with Uraraka, who blushed as Izuku walked up to them."What's your name?"
"U-Uraraka."
"I'm Black Cat.Pleasure to meet you."She took her hand and kissed her knuckles.Uraraka looked head over heels.Izuku coughed into his hand, resisting a smile at them, and Uraraka flushed even more.
"Ah!Sorry,Spiderman!"She hopped her way over to his side.
"It's alright, citizen.I understand how love can be."Uraraka blushed again, flailing her arms.
"L-love?!Oh no,you must be mistaken,Spiderman!I"m not in love with anyone!"She paused,"Wait, you're in love with someone?"She beamed at him.Izuku blushed as he realized what he'd said.
"Yes."He admitted, deciding that hiding would be useless,"They're's a boy my age who is very dear to me.We've been best friends since we were little."
"Awww."Uraraka cooed.
"Love blooming at a young age!How sweet!"Black Cat sounded awfully genuine."What's he like?"
Izuku wanted to gush about Kacchan but was afraid that telling Black Cat about him would put him in danger. So instead he glared,"None of your bussiness.Stay away from Miss Uraraka."
She looked hurt again and Uraraka protested,"That's...!"She sighed,"No,you're right. It's not safe."Izuku shot more webbing at Black Cat,encasing her.
"Goodbye,mi amor."
-
Spiderman signed yet another autograph as he passed by his fans, keeping a hand behind Ochako's back the entire time.
"Thanks for walking me home."Ochako smiled at him, waving at his fans.
"No problem!"Spiderman smiled back and it took Ochako's breath away. Not in an 'i'm attrached to him' kinda way but in an 'Holy shit,Spiderman is smiling at me' kinda way.He patted her back,"Take care."He swung away, adoring fans screaming for him.Ochako smiled as she watched him go and turned around when he left her field of vision.
"Mom,Dad,i'm home!"Dad looked awestruck and Mom smiled at her.
"Welcome home,Ochako! Was that the real Spiderman you were with?"Dad asked curiously.Ochsko grinned, doing Spiderman's hand motions.
"The one and only!"
"What was he like?"Mom asked, gesturig for her to sit at the dinner table. She did so.
"He was so nice and cool!Like 'thwip, thwip!"
They chatted some more as they ate dinner.Ochako showered and got into her pajamas to sleep, only to gasp as she saw none other than Black Cat at her window.
"Hey,Uraraka."
"Black Cat!"She ran up to her as she got down and closed the window,"What are you doing here?"
"Aren't you happy to see me?"
"Of course i am!"She awnsered honestly.Black Cat looked stunned.
"...Really?"She asked hopefully.Ochako nodded,grabbing her hand.
"How'd you find me?"
"Followed Spidey and that led me to you."
Ochako stifled a giggle,"Spidey? Is he okay with you calling him that?"
"Oh,i'm sure he'll love it!C'mon."She tried to guide her out the window.
"Wait,where are we going?""
"Where do you want to go?"
"Well...I've always wanted to go to this really fancy restaurant down the street but i can't afford it-"
"Let's go there!"
-
Himiko smiled over her shoulder at Uraraka, who looked nervous."Black Cat,are you sure this is okay?"
"Don't worry,it'll be fiiiine."
The receptionist yelped at the sight of her."B-Black Cat!What are you doing here?"He whispered the next sentence,"You're not here to rob us,are you?"
"Don't be silly!I'm on a date!"She slung an arm around Uraraka, who blushed peach pink.
"Y-Yeah!That's right!We're on a date!"She smiled,wrapping her arms around Himiko's neck,who took in a breath.That was the most affection she'd ever been given.It felt...nice.
"I see."The receptionist smiled nervously,"So you're not going to steal anything?"
"Nope!I'm on a clean streak for tonight!"He sighed in relief.
"Oh thank god."He gestured further in,"Please take a seat."
-
Ochako smiled at Black Cat as she sat with her feet perched up on the table. The waitress frowned at them but neither of them cared.
"Here's your menus."
"Thank you."
As soon as she was out of sight,Black Cat spoke,"Himiko.Toga Himiko. That's my name."
Ochako's smile embiggened,"Ochako.Uraraka Ochako."
"It's nice to meet you,Ochako."
"Nice to meet you too,Himiko."
Himiko buried her face into her menu and Ochako copied her.
-
Himiko felt like crying.Nobody ever said her name that fondly before.
"Soooooo..."Ochako said as their food came,"Tell me about yourself."
"Well,what do you wanna know?"
"Everything."
"Thanks for the specifics."
Ochako laughed,"You know what i mean!Like, what are you into?"
Himiko paused. What was she into? She hadn't had a life outside of stealing for years. She thought back to her childhood-the non-horrible parts."I'm into...Kirby."The small alien had brought her a light in the darkness. She should steal some Kirby merch later.
"I don't actually know anything about the games."Ochako admitted sheepishly,"But my friends compare me to Kirby sometimes.Probably because of the pink-"She gestured to her pajamas,"-And my roundness."
"And you're both wonderful."That just slipped out.No flirtation behind it.Ochako blushed yet again and Himiko was no less delighted.
"Thanks..."She smiled shyly.
"I want to play Kirby again."She confessed,"I haven't been able to since i was little.Really little."
"I have friends who own Kirby games!Maybe i could ask them if i could borrow them and we could play together!"
Himiko chocked up,"You'd really do that for me?"
Ochako nodded eagerly.Himiko couldn't help it.She bursted into tears.
-
Ochako panicked as Himiko started crying."Don't cry! It's okay!"She stood up to be by her side.
"W-why are you being so nice to me?"
"Because i want to."She hugged her tightly."Because you deserve to have people be nice to you."
Himiko snifled,"Thank you."
Ochako pulled back,"Better?"
Himiko nodded,smiling,"Better."
Ochako smiled back,"Great. Now Let's eat before our food get's cold."
-
After eating dinner,Ochako and Himiko went out for bubble tea, silent and happy.Himiko took Ochako home, climbing back up through her window."Goodnight."Himiko kissed her forehead and she took in a breath, blushing for the millionth time.
"Can't you stay?Meet my parents?"Ochako knew ig was impossible but...
Himiko smiled gravely,"They'd hate me."
"Maybe they'd understand!"
"Let's not risk it."
"Okay...goodnight."
Ochako bit her lip as Himiko climbed back out the window."Himiko, wait!"Himiko turned around and Ochako took her chance. She kissed her on the lips.
-
Himiko nearly fell backwards in shock.Ochako was kissing her...Ochako was kissing her.OCHAKO WAS KISSING HER!As she snapped out her shock, she gripped her shoulders, climbing back in.
They kissed for gods knows how long, until they ran out of breath and had to part.
"I'm a Mutant!"There,she said it.Ochako blinked.
"Eh?"
"I'm a Mutant. That's how i made Spiderman mess up last night.I can cast bad luck on anyone i make eye contact with."She turned away, not wanting to see the rejection upon Ochako's visage.
Ochako spun her around and lip-locked her again.Himiko froze, stunned again.Ochako pulled back, smiling widely."There's nothing wrong with Mutants."
"...Seriously?"Ochako nodded.Himiko stared at her for a few seconds before throwing her head back and laughing. She picked her up by waist, earning a 'woah!' from Ochako and she gripped her shoulders for support as she spun her around.Ochako joined in on her laughter.
"W-What are we laughing about?"
"You are perfect!"
-
"So,you and Spiderman, huh?"Mina asked slyly the next day at school.Ochako nearly choked on her pudding.
"What?!No!Spiderman is my friend!"She held back her laughter at the irony.
That night,Ochako swung her feet back and forth as she sat on her bed, waiting, and squealed lovestruckly when Himiko climbed in through her window.
"Hey,Ochako."

If You Leave Me Now | Part 6
summary: you realized your marriage with your husband Henry had run its course when you discovered his various love affairs. you wanted to leave him but not without giving Henry a little taste of his own medicine involving his preferred mechanic Sebastian.
pairings: mechanic!sebastian stan x reader, husband!henry cavill x reader
warning: smut (18+ ONLY), mention of deaths
masterlist
Tumblr media
Henry woke up early in the morning to get ready for work. He buttoned up his white dress shirt as he gave your sleeping face a small glance before leaning down to give you a small peck on your forehead. He tightened the dark blue tie around his neck as he thought of the night before.
As he saw you peacefully sleeping on the bed, guilt flooded his chest just like it did on the first encounters he had with ‘the other woman’. He ran his fingers through his hair in frustration of how far he had gone with this woman.
Henry put on his jacket before he walked out of the bedroom, searching for his phone. He walked into the living room, picking up the blanket on the floor from last night. He reached for a cellphone next to your purse on the couch, when he picked it up he realized it was not his phone but yours.  He pressed the bottom of the screen to turn it on.
Nothing.
Your phone had died overnight, he groaned and raced back to the bedroom to connect to the charger. He wanted to use your phone and dial his number to locate it faster.
His eyes darted to the dresser where his phone was lying next to the television remote. He sighed in relief before grabbing it and rushing out before he was late for work.
Not long after Henry left, you woke up from your sleep and found yourself feeling through the sheets to find Henry’s body. You looked at the clock and realized the time. You decided to make breakfast in the kitchen while watching a talk show.
The eggs sizzled on the pan as you cooked bacon in the burner next to it. You liked keeping the television on for ambiance sound but the host on television caught your attention. It was the segment where a viewer anonymously writes to the show for advice on life, relationships anything and they could discuss it on tv. The women around the table began to express their opinions and one
“I think it’s okay for this girl to ask a boy out for prom. In fact, why don’t we make the first step too? We ask to get flowers, chocolates, breakfast in bed--I know I’m getting a few eye rolls in the audience but think about this, men are told by society to be masculine, not be sentimental, not to cry. I think they deserve some emotional pampering.”
You turned around to watch the television and thought to yourself. Did you push Henry away? You thought about the last time you both enjoyed yourselves and you realized you hadn’t had much time together since your honeymoon months ago.
Maybe the original plan of seeking revenge on Henry was compulsive and wrong. The thought of putting Henry to the test of choosing between you and his lover came to your mind.  You checked your phone’s calendar and realized Henry had a gala to attend this weekend and he had RSVP’d for the both of you, bringing you in as his plus one.
You finished cooking and quickly ate breakfast before going out to the store and shop for the perfect outfit.
The phone in your pocket rang loudly as you finished the last transaction of the day. Sebastian’s name came up on the screen, you sighed and turned off the ringer. Letting the call go to voicemail. The phone rang again as you walked away from the cashier at the counter.
“Hello?” You answered. Sebastian breathed a sigh of relief after you spoke.
“Oh hey.” He said. “How are you?”
“I’m well-”
“Is everything okay?” He interrupted you. “I was worried. I texted you last night after seeing you at the restaurant but you never replied.”
“You sent me a text?” You pulled your phone away from your ear and looked down searching through your messages, finding the text he had sent. You thought of the phone in your purse, which you still found on the couch when you went to make breakfast, and the phone itself mysteriously appearing the morning later.
Your heart raced at the thought of Henry reading Sebastian’s message while you slept. Nothing guaranteed you he didn’t read it before your phone turned off.
“Oh my god.” You gasped.
“Don’t worry about it,” Sebastian misunderstood the reason you gasped. “I assumed you were sleeping, I called this morning too but it went straight to voicemail. I thought you didn’t want to hear from me at first, then I started to imagine worse things.”
“Worse?” You asked.
“Why don’t you stop by my apartment? I’ll send you the address. I’d like to see you and talk.” Sebastian said. You didn’t like the sudden change of tone in the word ‘talk’.
“Alright, I’ll be there.” You agreed.
The ride to Sebastian’s apartment was a little far from the mall. It gave you enough time to get your thoughts together about Sebastian. You didn’t want to drag him into the mess you and Henry had. You really liked Sebastian since you met at Ben’s party.
You knocked on the door, rehearsing the small monologue you had mentally practiced for in the car. The door opened and Chris stood in the entrance with messy hair and a dark green shirt.
“Oh, hey. I know you.” He held his hand out for you to shake it. You took his hand and smiled at him.
“Thanks for getting my mimosas yesterday. I’m sorry I kept making you walk over for refills.” You walked into the apartment to see Sebastian leaning against the counter in the small kitchen area. Chris had said something about it being his job when you saw Sebastian give you a little, forced smile.
A woman wearing nothing but panties and what seemed to be Chris’s shirt padded barefoot across the hallway to kiss his cheek. Your eyes widened when you saw her finally pull away and notice you.
“Hey there.” Ben’s wife greeted you and you were sure your brain was about to explode.
“Excuse me, Chris. Can I speak to you alone in the living room?” Sebastian practically glared at Chris as they walked out of the kitchen. Ben’s wife reached into the fridge to pull out a yogurt cup and sat down in the chair next to a small table.
“Close that jaw girl,” She chuckled. You didn’t realize your mouth was hanging open, you were quite embarrassed at finding her here. As for her, you could tell she gave no fucks.
“I’m sorry, I-” You struggled to find something to say.
“My jaw kinda dropped too when I heard your name fall out of Sebastian’s mouth saying you were coming. Then again, your reaction to finding Seb at the restaurant yesterday gave it away too easily.” She brought the spoon to her mouth and closed her mouth around it.  “I don’t blame you though, we all get tired of our husbands eventually.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” You were frightened. You’ve only met Ben’s wife a few times and the woman sitting down in front of you acted nothing like the rich, fancy woman you knew.. and now she was suddenly in on your biggest secret.
“I’m not stupid.” She said. “And about you and Sebastian, your secret is safe with me.”
“I’m n-not going to say a-anything to Ben.” You stuttered letting her know you were clearly intimidated her.
“I don’t care if you tell him or not. Frankly, I don’t think he cares. Sit.” She patted the side of the table with an empty chair. You took the chair and sat down. “I was once like you. Full of hope, in love with my husband, until I realized the marriage I thought I had was everything but perfect. Their world is materialistic and it drove me insane. That’s when I started having affairs.”
“How long has it been since you..” You trailed off.
“A couple of years, maybe eight?” She seemed to be thinking of the number in her head. “I know I’m much older than you but it makes me feel like we’re the same age. I love feeling young again, Chris makes sure I feel young like I still have that little fire inside of me.”
“Are you going to divorce Ben?” You asked. She shook her head and smiled.
“Sweetie, there is so much you’ve yet to learn. He has his affairs, I have my affairs, we both turn our heads and pretend it’s just us and nobody else. I make us sit in Chris’s section of the restaurant to have them both in the same room so it keeps my heart racing. Ben and I need each other, I need his money and he needs my presence or role as a wife."
“Oh.” Was all you could say and nod.
“How long have you and Seb?”
“Not long, just once.” Yesterday, you mentally added.
“I can tell, he’s now arguing with Chris over who should leave the apartment and wait their turn. The poor boy is embarrassed to be loud in the room next door.” She chuckled. You felt your cheeks heat up. “Seb has been through some tough times, cherish him. You don’t forget your first affair.”
“What happened to your first?” You asked. She placed the empty cup of yogurt down on the table and sighed, her eyes getting watery.
“He died in a car accident,” she said. You whispered a small ‘sorry’ as she wiped away her tears. “I was going to leave Ben for him, but I never got the chance. I kept stalling him, I feared to leave my safe haven with Ben. I wish I would have made my choice right away. I haven’t loved again since.”
Chris popped his head in the kitchen.
“Hey babe, you coming?” He said.
“Yeah, I’ll be right there.” She cleared her throat. Chris disappeared and she pulled you in for a hug, only to whisper in your ear, “Affairs aren’t only sex, but to keep each other company too.” She stood up and walked away.
Sebastian leaned against the doorframe entrance of the kitchen with car keys in hand.
“Let’s go, I don’t want to be in here while they do it.”
Sebastian had crumpled up the hamburger wrapper in his hands before dumping it into the paper bag. You propped your feet up on the dash of his rusty old truck as you sipped on your favorite icy drink in a random, vacant park.
“Alright. I see those wheels in your brain have been turning since we left the apartment. What did she tell you?” He asked.
“Nothing just chatted about being surprised to see her there.” You said. Sebastian gave you a playful glare.
“You know you can trust me.” He said. “Nothing you say will upset me. You have immunity.”
“She said you had gone through some things and I’m trying to figure out what she meant by that.” You said.
“What are your ideas?” Seb asked.
“Well, you either lost a bet against Chris-” Sebastian burst out laughing, you continued. “Or your pet fish died.”
“I have never had a fish as a pet and Chris knows not to bet against me because we always win. That’s why he shaved his eyebrows off completely a few years ago. ”
“Then I’m out of ideas.” You said.
“She probably meant about my nephew.” He said. “My sister got knocked up by her boss when she was in her early twenties. He offered her the world but when he found out she was pregnant he rejected her.”
“That son of a bitch.” You cursed. Sebastian nodded.
“He didn’t want anything to do with her or the baby. I looked out after her during her pregnancy after my dad kicked her out of the house. She loved her ‘little bundle of joy’ as she called the baby. She didn’t get to meet him, things got complicated during labor and she died.” Sebastian wiped away tears that managed to slip out.
“I took care of him, I raised him alone for a few years.” He chuckled. “Little guy loved waking me up with a slap in the face with his pacifier. he loved to watch me fix cars out here in the parking lot before I had the shop.” He smiled.
“I only got to see him turn five when his father came back, hired a private investigator and put me a court. He claimed I wasn’t a good parental figure, it wasn’t a safe environment for the kid and he could offer him much more than I could. I haven’t seen him since.”
Sebastian’s lower lip began to tremble. You ran your hand up and down his arm before he eventually broke down.
“I’m sorry.” He wiped tears away. You shook your head in response.
“No, don’t apologize at all.” You pulled Sebastian in for a hug as he broke down into tears, a few tears rolling down your cheeks as well. “You’re going to see him again. I promise.”
He placed a hand on your cheek and brought your lips to his for a kiss. Your lips moved against his slowly but passionately, savoring each other until you pulled away.
“Are we going to address the elephant in the room?” He asked, pressing his forehead against yours. “Yesterday. In my office.” He added.
“What you want me to say?” You asked. Sebastian looked down between both of you and held your hand before bringing his gaze back up to you.
“That you feel the same way about me as I feel about you.” He said.
“Seb,” You paused, thinking back to the monologue you had prepared in your head in the car. “I’m married.”
As you finished saying the last word, his thumb and index finger pinched the silver ring on your finger and slid it out. In the small space of the pickup truck, he managed to slide in the middle part between the driver and passenger side and lifted you up on his lap.
Your knees were placed on both his sides, digging into the off-white leather as he kissed your jaw.
“So?” He said.
“I’m a mess. My marriage is a mess and I don’t want to bring you into it."
“I’m a mess too, everyone is.” He slid his hand under your shirt and pressed his palm against your lower back. You turned around the empty parking lot of the park hoping no joggers were watching.
“Sebastian, please.” You begged, placing your hand on his shoulder. “I don’t want to bring you trouble. You’ve been through enough.”
“Please,” He whispered desperately in your ear as he lifted his hips to grind in between your legs. “My heart’s already broken, you can’t make it worse. We can seek comfort in each other. Even if it’s just that. I’m just like you. I’m tired of being alone.”
And with those last words, your mouth came to his and his hands desperately took your shirt over your shoulders and you did the same to his right after. You moved to the side to get rid of your pants and he let his cock spring free from his jeans. He fumbled through his wallet, finding a condom and quickly rolled it on himself.
You straddled his lap and slowly sunk down on him, the sound of both of your moans filling the small cabin of the truck. He groped your breast through the lace of your bra before sliding the straps down and freeing your breasts. He left small kisses in the valley of your breasts as you jumped on his shaft, your walls squeezing him just right as he snapped his hips as you came down.
“I’m captivated by you.” He groaned against your skin before pulling back. He looked in between your bodies where you were both connected and saw how his slick member entered you. He pressed his hand on your navel briefly before sliding his fingers down to play with your clit in a circular motion.
Sebastian knew you two couldn’t be safe out there for long. He grabbed your hip with his free hand and helped you slam down faster on him, reaching your g-spot which made you drop your jaw and held your mouth open making obscene sounds.
He smiled to himself, trying to memorize the noises you made to remember later at night when you had to go home to your husband and he would be left to sleep alone. The thought of you being someone else’s angered him. He wanted to be your husband and sleep and wake up beside you. Have you keep his last name. Show you off to the whole world. Celebrate your anniversary by keeping you up all night. Cuddle in bed early until mid-afternoon.
You became sloppy with the rhythm and he brought you down on the seat as he took over. Your sweaty skin stuck against the leather as he rode you, you were focused on the blue of his eyes as he thrust into you. The windows were foggy and beads of sweat gathered on his forehead as he reached his climax which caused yours to follow. He lay down on top of you catching his breath. Your fingers ran through his hair and you realized Sebastian meant more to you than you wanted to admit.

prologue | chapter 1 | chapter 2 | chapter 3 | chapter 4 | chapter 5 | chapter 6 | chapter 7 | chapter 8 | chapter 9 | chapter 10 | chapter 11 | final
Y/N: Ready for the show? [sent: 8:22 p.m./ read: -]
You look at the guy by your side. Finally, revenge is coming. You can’t wait to see Jordan’s face when you reach the restaurant, your table being just across Jungkook’s.
Will they greet each other and act like it’s just someone they once met? Or they are going to pretend not knowing each other? You knew how you would react.
Jungkook: We’re already here. [received: 8:29 p.m.]
You smile.
It was not hard to convince Jordan to come to this fancy restaurant with you. He’ve been letting you down for so long, excusing it as work, that you only had to pretend to be almost crying to convince him.
Not that you would. Ever again. No more tears for this man. Before, whenever you listened to Cry Me A River, your mind always screamed how exaggerated Justin was. Now it was your time to sing Cry Me A River. But instead of telling everyone that you were cheated like Timberlake did, being so public, your revenge would be more private. Toying with Calli and Jordan.
“Why are so quiet today, babe?” Jordan asked, taking you out of your thoughts. You control yourself to not make a face.
“Just work. A rude client today. The lawyers are late but clients blame me”.
“I already told you this but... you really should quit your job. They don’t treat you right, and you know I don’t feel comfortable with you working only with males.”
“What? There are women there. Actually, my boss is a woman.”
“One, of five guys”.
“What? There are a lot of other girls. And even if they weren’t there, they are all so respectful. You’re talking…”
“We are here.” He interrupts you. “Let’s not fight over this, again”.
You roll your eyes. He’s the one that started all of this.
The maitre directs you both to the table you reserved in the morning. The one besides Jungkook’s. You can help to smile even more when you see him there, with Calli. Just across yours. You spy Jordan’s face, but he didn’t seem to realize she’s there. Great. His surprise will be bigger.
You sit on the same side of your accomplice. You look at your him, trying to look innocent, hoping Jordan and Calli are watching.
The moment your gaze focus on Jungkook’s face, you make a surprised face, just like you both planned before, and turn your head as fast as you could. Jordan’s gaze is on you.
Great.
“Good night. My name is Samantha and I will be serving your table this night. Here’s the menu. You can call me when you’re ready for ordering”.
You pick the menu, but your focus is totally on Jordan and, eventually, on Calli. You order the same as Jordan.  Look at each other, you wanted to scream, but you keep the small talk. You hear a beep from your cellphone.
Jungkook: This is going super slow. Where’s the action? [received: 8:47 p.m.]
The food arrives before you can type your reply.
Y/N: Now. [sent: 8:48 p.m./ read: 8:48 p.m.]
You look at the plate in front of you, regretting that you didn’t pay attention to what you were ordering. Jordan is concentrated on his plate. So you just pushed your glass off the table, making a mess on the floor, with both shards and your soda. You move a little to look at it.
“Are you alright?” Jungkook asks you, moving closer too.
With your peripheral vision, you can see Jordan is frustrated, so he looks at the guy next table’s date to check if she’s noticing it too. Only to find Calli there, also looking frustrated.
“Oh my God, I’m so sorry.” You tell the waiter that came to your rescue. You really feel sorry for causing that trouble, but it was needed for something bigger.
Jungkook smiles at you, he’s still close enough for you to smell his perfume. The discomfort in their faces is so evident now that they are aware of each other.
“What now?” He whispers at you.
“The show must go on.” You whisper back. “I’m fine. Thank you for worrying.” You hold his hand and smile, trying to look a little bit too much friendly.
You get your back straight again.
“Oh. Don’t we know each other?” You ask Calli. All you feel is that you deserve an Oscar for this acting, while your blood was boiling just by seeing them so close.
“Uh. Maybe. Your face looks familiar”.
You keep looking at her face, pretending to be remembering. You knew exactly from where you knew her. So you open your eyes really big.
“She was one of your clients, right, Jo?”
He looks at her again, also pretending that he hasn’t seen her before.
“You’re right, babe. Calli. Is really nice to see you again. How’ve you been?”
“I’m fine, and you? That’s how we know each other. You went to my inauguration party.” She tells you.
Jungkook keeps quiet.
“Oh honey, Jordan was the architect of my clinic”.
They greet each other, and you can feel Jungkook’s discomfort. You felt bad, but at least you were not alone there.
The interaction between the couples was short. Jordan seemed crazy to leave that restaurant as fast as he could, so you gave up on eating your food. You didn’t even know what that was.
“Do you know that guy?” Jordan asks you when you get at your house’s door.
“Who?”
“You know who I’m talking about. That girl’s boyfriend”.
“No. Should I?”
“It's just… It looked like he knew you. Like you knew each other”.
You smile. You have no idea.
“I don’t know him.” You give him a small kiss. “Get home safe, okay?"
“Honey… What was that at the restaurant?” Calli asks, staring the road by the passenger’s sit.
“What?”
“You know, Jungkook. Holding hands and staring at each other. What was that?” Her voice sounded loud, angry and strident.
“Nothing? I was just worried. That girl could have hurt herself pretty bad”.
They keep quiet for the rest of the way. Jungkook stops in front of her house, but don’t turn off the car.
“You’re not coming in?” Calli is surprised.
“Not today. I told you before, I have to finish that sketch. Deadline is tomorrow”.
“Okay. Text me when you get home”.
Jungkook: Are you hungry? [received: 10:08 p.m.]
Y/N: Starving :(  [sent: 10:09 p.m. / read: 10:09 p.m.]
Jungkook: Let’s grab a burger? [received: 10:09 p.m.]

Part II - The Untimely Downfall of Strangers
Tumblr media
THEN
We spent a lot of our time over the holidays together that first year. I went out to London and met his family, he came for Thanksgiving. We flew back and forth and FaceTimed and called and texted. They released their album in November and did promotion all over. Some of it was here, some of it wasn’t.
He had said we would make it work and I was starting to believe him. He asked me to be his girlfriend before they left for tour. I said yes a thousand times and went to their first show in London.
I released my album in March and I lived for the weekends I’d go visit and I loved when he’d come to L.A. I turned eighteen in the spring and I was more than thrilled to go on tour.
I felt on top of the world.
I mean--I kind of was.
THEN - Day 1167
I hadn’t seen him in a few weeks. November was slowly approaching--they had promo for their last album and then the inevitable hiatus. He was excited and he was scared--and I was still exhausted.
I had no idea what he was going to do in the time off--he wanted to go home for a little and I wanted to be in L.A. We knew that we’d need some time apart just to relax, just to sleep, but he’d asked me to come to London with him. I knew I couldn’t. I couldn’t see his mom, I couldn’t sleep in his house and know that our time was up.
I went to New York with the intent of doing it--it wasn’t that I didn’t love him. It wasn’t that I wanted to, it was mainly because I didn’t know what my other option was.
I couldn’t do this to him--I couldn’t pull him down into the abyss that I was currently living in. He deserved to be happy and enjoy his break--and if I couldn’t do that, he needed to do it without me.
We had dinner the first night with Niall and Louis and their manager. We sat in a fancy restaurant and drank expensive wine and pretended everything was fine. I think he knew it wasn’t--I think he knew all summer.
I think he saw it coming.
THEN - Day 220
“Alright, just take ten,” I said into the microphone towards the empty audience. I pulled my t-shirt up to wipe the sweat from my forehead as the dancers behind me dispersed into the wings.
Rehearsals for tour were fun--there was dancing and music and hours with people that had become my family. I spent more nights out of the year sleeping in hotels with my band down the hall than I did in the house I called home.
My mom wasn’t always thrilled about it, but I think she knew it made me happy. And it did.
Harry was sat in the second row--he scrolled on his phone as I approached him. I wasn’t thrilled that he wanted to watch, but I think he wanted to be supportive. The night before I hung up on him twice when he said he couldn’t stay for our six month anniversary.
I didn’t ask for much--I wanted to go to dinner, to lunch, anything really, other than being on different continents.
He showed up to rehearsal today and sat there for an hour while we were busy--I hadn’t even spoken to him yet.
“Hi,” I said, pausing in the aisle of the house. He seemed caught off guard, he clicked his phone shut but smiled up at me.
“Hi.”
“You didn’t have to come,” I told him, crossing my arms in front of my chest. I suddenly felt self conscious about the cropped tank top and semi-exposed sports bra I wore.
He let out a laugh and stood. “I know I didn’t--I wanted to.” He pulled me into his chest, wrapping his arms around my shoulders as he pressed a kiss to my forehead.
One of my dancers walked by us, she made sure to give us enough space in the aisle. I hated that--I hated when people acted like they needed to be careful around me, around us.
Dating Harry was great--he felt like someone I’d known my whole life. He felt like a puzzle piece that fit into my life like I’d always been searching for it. In some ways, I think I had been.
His band was successful, and oddly enough, our relationship made each of us more successful--we each gained new titles. I was Harry Styles’ girlfriend, he was Margot Jones’ boyfriend.
Sometimes it felt strange to be so young and have so much riding on everything we said and did--we’d go for sushi and there would be pictures online. If we weren’t seen together for a few weeks people would start to talk.
I pushed the thought out of my mind and smiled up at him. “I’m sorry I hung up on you,” I said quietly. I didn’t want to fight with him--he left in two days and my tour started in just three weeks. We knew the summer would be tough. We did our best to match up our time off and align any shows we could, but our A&R people only had so much pull in those decisions.
“It’s alright,” he laughed a little. He pulled me away from him to look down at me. “Y’know, if we can’t actually be together, maybe we can just have a FaceTime date. Dinner, watch the same movie. It’ll be like we’re actually together.”
I rolled my eyes at his suggestion and tried to hide my smile. He was a dork--he couldn’t control the fact that his label needed him somewhere and mine needed me on tour. Neither of us could do anything about it--these plans had been set before we even met.
Normally it was easy to push out the doubt. There were times when things were impossibly hard and it felt like we couldn’t do it. There were weeks we went without talking more than twenty minutes, there were nights when I wouldn’t even hear from him at all.
But sitting on the bus with him after a show or seeing him walk into my hotel room after he flew into town lit a fire in my stomach that I didn’t think would ever go out.
I think to most people it sounds amazing--you’re a Grammy winning recording artist, your boyfriend is in the biggest band in the world. You can fly on private planes to see each other and drink champagne before you’re twenty-one.
There are parties with people in magazines and fancy clothes.
What people forget though, is the fact that when you get off stage, when the whole house is empty and everyone’s gone home on cloud nine from the show you put on, you’re left alone in a hotel room with a ringing in your ears and a hope that tomorrow’s show will be sold out.
Because if it’s not, you don’t know what you’ll do.
__
NOW - 1695
I stayed up until 2am. I stared at the granite counter and wondered if I’d made the biggest mistake of my life--not retiring, not taking time off, not going to rehab.
Letting him go.
I finally fell asleep on the couch at some point, and when I woke to the rising sun, I stared at the granite counter some more. The keurig hummed as it spit out my coffee and the morning air was cool as it blew in through the window in my kitchen.
There were ten songs. Ten songs that seemed to tell small pieces of his story--some pieces felt foreign and unknown and false. Some pieces felt familiar and known and mine.
There were songs that painted me as someone he loved, someone he missed, but then there were songs that painted me as the villain--the girl who left and took his heart and never looked back.
I was looking back all the time, he just didn’t know it.
I knew that he felt that way, at least a little. I know he wasn’t the one who broke up with me, I know he wasn’t the one who initiated it. But he let me leave, he didn’t come after me, and he didn’t even call.
I sat on the deck and watched as the tide went out, my phone sat on the table as I sipped my coffee--haunting me with the attached audio files that he’d sent.
I needed to respond--I knew that. I knew that I had to say something, anything, in response to the email.
I figured calling him at 6:30am was playing it safe--the likelihood of him answering was slim. I had no idea if he was in L.A. or London or New York or some other major city, but I realized as the phone rang that I didn’t want to. I didn’t want to know where he was, who he was with, what he was doing.
Knowing that would solidify the thought in my head that time had passed and he’d moved on.
I could leave a voicemail, I could say they were good, I could say they sounded great, I could say good luck, make some small talk, and pretend that I wasn’t aching with a thousand questions.
“Hello?”
His voice made my heart drop--I hadn’t heard it in eighteen months. It sounded the same, but it sounded so vastly different. My own voice was stuck in my throat.
“Marg--y’there?”
“Hi, yeah, sorry, hi.” I set my mug down on the table and bit at my lip. What was he thinking? Where was he? If we was in L.A., why was he awake? If he was in London, what was he doing?
Instead of letting him question why I was calling or how I was doing, I launched straight in. “I listened--to the album. It’s great. I just wanted to let you know that--” I didn’t know what to say. Did I like it? Did I sit in my kitchen until the early morning crying into an empty wine glass?
“I liked it.” I finished my sentence and exhaled, hoping he couldn’t hear how nervous I was.
“Did you?” He asked quietly, but he didn’t let me answer. “I’m glad, thank you, I’m glad you listened to it.”
I wanted to tell him that I had no idea how he felt--I had no idea how much I hurt him. I wanted to tell him that wasn’t my intent.
I think some people think I hurt Harry on purpose. I think some people think that I had this master plan to break his heart; that I wasn’t careful and I that I didn’t care who got mowed over or lost as a casualty.
The truth of the matter is that I was doing my best to stay alive, as dramatic as that may sound. I was doing my best to keep my head above water in a world where I was constantly drowning.
For the longest time he helped me stay afloat. And for that I will be always grateful.
But when it came down to it, I had done a lot of running and hiding and escaping from myself. And I couldn’t escape anymore. I needed time to sort through my own shit, to understand my deepest hurts and to try to grow from the ashes of my past fires.
And I needed to do that alone.
“Would you want to get coffee?”
His question sounded hopeful, like he’d been taking my silence as a bad sign. I picked at the nail polish on my thumb, playing out a scene in my head.
We could have coffee and I could see how he was--see if he’d moved on, see how he felt, see if he hated me. We could talk and he might be able to understand more of what happened for me if I could have a minute to explain some of it. Maybe he’d realize that I didn’t mean to hurt him.
“Sure,” I nodded to myself even though I was alone. “Are you in L.A.?”
“I am. Been here since January actually--I, uh, I didn’t want to reach out until the album was done.”
“Could you be at Geoffrey’s at one?” I almost ignored his question--I knew if I didn’t actually set a plan that I’d talk myself out of it, especially since I didn’t have a witness to the conversation. If Sinead had been here she could have talked me into it, forced me into the car, guilted me about breaking his heart.
“In Malibu? Sure, yes, yeah. I--I’ll see you then.”
“Okay. I’ll see you then.”
THEN - Day 1145
“I seriously couldn’t be more proud of you,” he almost knocked me over, hugging me tightly and throwing his body into me with excitement. The scent of his cologne wafted to my nose, he smelled safe and familiar--but he made my stomach sink at the same time. “That was amazing, seriously.”
“Thank you,” I laughed, trying to shove him off of me as he kissed me face. My dressing room was quiet for now--it always was right when I got off the stage. I always had a few minutes of quiet before Sinead would be asking what I needed and Nick would be telling me where I needed to be.
Sinead was nowhere to be found, she was most likely getting the car ready for me to be whisked away to Harry’s. He let go of me and plopped himself onto the couch--he was clearly happy to be with me for the last show.
Ending the tour in Los Angeles meant one thing--a ton of my friends and family in the audience and Harry here to be a part of the celebration. It had been a long eight months, but a good eight months. The tour was successful and I loved performing. There was something mesmerizing about being able to sing my own lyrics--my own stories--to a crowd of people who each made their own connection to the notes I strung together.
Being able to take words and music and thread them into an album than I could then sing for other people felt like the reason I was here.
Even if it was tiring.
Being on stage was like being someone else--for two hours I got to turn everything off. It was just me, the music, the people right in front of me. There were no obligations, there was no pressure--it was just the present moment.
On stage I got to be the Margot Jones that everyone loved--the one who had her shit together. I was the girl with the guitar, the girl with the Grammys, the girl other people dreamed about being. I wasn’t the Margot Jones who had panic attacks, the Margot Jones who was sometimes cold and apathetic and mean.
I took out my earrings and placed them on the counter as I stared in the mirror. Harry was reading an email that Bridget, his assistant, had sent over. Something about his flight back to his own tour, his flight back to his bandmates, his flight away from me.
“Can we not talk business, for tonight?”
He looked up to meet my eyes in the mirror and stood from the couch. He came to hug me from behind, which only got in the way of me trying to brush out my hair. “Yes, I’m sorry. I love you and you’re fantastic and I’ll just shut my phone off all together.”
“Please don’t,” Sinead interrupted and answered for me as she barged in. “Almost ready? I’ll get this together and give it back to Bonnie,” she motioned at the jewelry I’d discarded.
“Yes,” Harry saluted at her, cracking a smile as she rolled her eyes at him.
“You distract her, you know,” she wagged a finger at him. Harry--the troublemaker he was--didn’t seem to care.
“I’m ready,” I groaned at Sinead, who offered me a smile.
“How’s it feel?”
I rolled my eyes. People were always asking that. How did it feel to finish an album? How did it feel to be on that billboard? How did it feel? How did it feel to be done with tour?
I knew that my parents and siblings were likely on their way to the party downtown--we’d rented out a restaurant to host my friends and celebrate the accomplishment.
My fourth headlining world tour and I was only nineteen.
“It feels tiring,” I said to Sinead. Harry crossed his arms and leaned against the counter, watching as I started to unbutton the sparkly outfit I wore. I was hoping to be able to wash my face and get the fake eyelashes off--but based on the way Sinead was gathering my belongings, I doubted I had time.
It was tiring. It was fun and amazing and enjoyable, but it was exhausting. I felt like I had lived five lives in my less than two decades on the planet. Sometimes it felt like the last six years had spanned a whole lifetime. I felt like I’d seen every part of the world and like I’d felt every feeling. Sometimes I felt like there was nothing left to do, nothing bigger to achieve.
And sometimes, all I wanted was a nap.
THEN - Day 1026
I think my family loved Harry as much as I did. Ben was always hanging out with him on tour, Maya was obsessed with Niall even more than she was when she first met him--but now she at least figured out how to speak full sentences to him.
Pete and Harry liked to golf together and my mom loved having him around for the holidays.
I just liked having him around. Especially when I felt like this.
“What can I do--how can I help?”
I was sat in my hotel bed--my knees pulled up to my chest as Sinead and Nick stared on in confusion. This was happening more and more often, mornings where I’d wake up and feel stuck--absolutely unable to get out of bed in fear that something terrible and miserable was bound to happen. But I didn’t know what.
It wasn’t anything specific that I worried about--it wasn’t a flood, an earthquake, a car accident. It was just something, and I couldn’t quite place my finger. It mostly felt like I was going to explode if I didn’t do something, but the uncertainty of what to do left me in the fetal position and wishing I could crawl out of my skin.
Nick, Harry, and Sinead didn’t seem to understand this.
“You can’t do anything,” I shook my head, wishing my words weren’t true.
“What do you need?” Nick asked as he took a few steps closer to me. Harry looked up at him, I could see how badly he wanted me to have an answer to the question, but I didn’t. I never did.
“I don’t need anything,” I yelled at Nick. That type of question sent me over the edge. If I knew what I needed I would ask, if I knew what would help I would do it.
I had known this feeling my whole life--I knew it was a kid, I knew it when my mom would fight with my dad and I knew it when I spent weekends with him after they got divorced. I knew it when I’d walk into school in the morning and I knew it when I’d wake up on the day of a show.
This--the morning on the Grammys--was no different.
“I just can’t fucking do it anymore,” I started to cry, tears spilling onto my cheeks and Harry moved closer on the bed. We’d barely been awake for an hour and I was already having a meltdown, I’m sure Nick and Sinead were thrilled.
“Do what?” Harry asked, his voice quiet. He brought a hand to my arm but I swatted it away.
“Anything, this, all of this!” I motioned around the room. I knew he had no idea what I was talking about, none of them did.
I’d already taken three months off from everything. No appearances, no talk shows, no recording, no shows. I didn’t do anything except go to therapy and sit in my mom’s house. I’d go visit Harry once in a while on the road, but he came to me most.
It helped--it did. I didn’t feel quite so suffocated. I didn’t feel like every single word I said was being analyzed under a microscope.
I appreciated him--I appreciated the way he tried to lean forward and touch me just to offer comfort. I wished it worked.
“Can’t do what, Margot?” Nick came closer now, still slightly hesitant. I felt like a mess--here I was, throwing a fit. I needed a nap, I needed my mom. I needed a good meal. I needed a break.
“All of it,” I said more quietly now. Harry seemed to scoop me into him--his arms wrapped around me and this time, I didn’t fight it.
I couldn’t exactly say what I meant--I couldn’t really tell them how I was feeling. How do you tell the people who make your life so amazing that it’s just not cutting it anymore?
I couldn’t tell Harry that I felt empty, even when he was around. I couldn’t tell Sinead that I needed more space, I couldn’t tell Nick that I fantasized about quitting and never returning to a studio for the rest of my life.
Nick sat at the edge of the bed now, Harry brushed a hand through my hair, and I just cried.
I stayed like that for an hour. They all did. Sinead stood in the center of the room, everyone waited for me to say something.
Eventually, I did what I always did. I wiped the tears off of my face and stood up. I asked Sinead to read over my schedule and I let Bonnie swipe some mascara onto my eyelashes. I stood in middle of the room and let Jamie zipper the back of the dress they pulled on me.
I walked to the door, and when Sinead asked me how I was, I simply turned to her and smiled.
I’m fine.
NOW - Day 1695
I drove myself--which may or may not have been a good idea. Despite the fact that I had my license, I didn’t really need to use it a whole lot, seeing as most of my teen years I was driven around by anyone but myself.
I didn’t need anyone else around. I didn’t need security, I didn’t need Sinead. I didn’t need my sister or my mom. I needed to do this by myself.
This time, I got here first.
The cafe was quiet, and I was thankful that the hostess sat me in a tiny room in the back. Geoffrey’s wasn’t a new spot, I’d frequent it with Sinead when we just felt like getting out of the house or when I felt like sitting alone in my house was driving me crazy.
I ordered a cup of tea and sat at the table--waiting.
I heard his voice before I saw him--he mentioned something to the woman at the front counter about meeting a friend.
A friend.
That’s what I had been reduced to. Frankly, I didn’t even know if I qualified as that anymore. Was I a friend? I was someone he loved, someone he held when she cried, someone who knew all of his secrets and his deepest fears. Someone who hurt him.
He smiled when he rounded the corner and met my eyes--I forced one, but my stomach felt like it was about to hurl itself out of my mouth just at the sight of him.
“Hi,” I stood up and let him hug me. He seemed much more at ease than I expected. I had hoped--a little bit--that baring his soul via ten song album would leave him a little nervous to see me. Apparently not.
“It’s good to see you,” he nodded, pulling out his chair before he sat. I followed his lead, sitting back in my chair and letting my hands wrap around the tea in front of me. I wondered, for a second, if he’d realize my newfound addiction to having a mug in my hands at all times.
“Thanks for meeting with me, thanks for letting me listen to the album.”
He smiled a little, almost as if he could sense my nervousness. He laughed, ran a hand through his hair, and watched me. He took in my face, perhaps wondering if I were as miserable as I was when he had last seen me.
I wasn’t--by far. I was almost like a new person. I had new hobbies and new friends and new beliefs and values. But I was still me. I still worried too much and I still had to do my best to stay afloat--but now I had a life vest.
“I’m really glad you liked it. I hope it wasn’t--too much.”
I didn’t know what he meant. Too much? Too much lyrically? Emotionally? I decided to not tell him that I listened to it and cried the whole time, even during the happy songs.
He was wearing a black t-shirt and his hair was short--I knew he’d cut it, I’d seen pictures online. Sinead had texted one to me, actually. I’d always wanted him to cut it short, but he waited until long after I was gone.
I couldn’t help but smile at the familiarity of his face. “It wasn’t too much. When did you write it?”
“In the spring of 2016. I spent a bit in London after the promotion of the last album, y’know, after the split.”
I wasn’t sure if he was referring to ours or to the band’s. Maybe he meant both.
“I needed to get out of London, though,” he shrugged. “Figured writing and recording an album in Jamaica would be a nice change of scenery.”
I had a million questions--who’d he write with? Who produced it? What did each lyric mean? What did each song allude to? How did he do when he was writing? I never asked Niall because I didn’t want him to know that I still cared--still wondered.
I think he took my silence as uncertainty, or awkwardness, or something, because he kept talking.
“Niall had said you went straight to treatment after Thanksgiving, how was that?”
His bluntness was somewhat startling, but I wasn’t completely surprised. I knew he wanted me to go somewhere, I knew he wanted me to take time to get help. I never really believed him that I needed it, though--I thought it was normal to be crippled with anxiety and emptiness.
I opened my mouth to speak, but when I realized that my automatic reaction was to say that my month long stint in rehab was good, I laughed. “It was--hard. But it was helpful, and really necessary, I think.”
He watched me for a second, I couldn’t read the emotion on his face. It seemed like a mix of being happy, relieved, unsure. I assumed that I looked somewhat similar.
“It was in Tennessee,” I continued. “A lot of land and there were these horses that they made us ride which was terrifying at first,” I laughed, dropping my gaze to my hands. “But I got on one and got used to it and before I left I even knew how to make it gallop.”
He raised his eyebrows and smirked at me. “Pretty impressive.”
He didn’t seem mad--he didn’t seem like he resented the shit out of me or like he thought about how much he hated me every day. For that, I was thankful.
“When did you come home?”
“Right before Christmas that year. We just had a quiet day here at my mom’s and then 2016 was pretty quiet in and of itself.”
The truth was that 2016 was filled with two weekly therapy appointments, monthly visits to a psychiatrist, figuring out if I wanted to write more--if I wanted to do anything. I bought my own house over the summer when I decided that sharing a bathroom with my younger sister was getting pretty old.
“I heard you did that movie,” I said suddenly. “Ben saw it--he said you were great and that the movie was amazing.”
He smiled at this--I wasn’t sure if it was the compliment or the mention of my brother. “How is Ben, he’s twenty-one, now, right?”
I nodded. “Yeah, turned twenty-one three weeks ago. Had a wild night with Sara,” I rolled my eyes. Sara--Ben’s longtime girlfriend--spent just as much time with my family as Harry used to. Harry knew her well.
“I can only imagine what a night it was,” he laughed, a smile spreading on his cheeks to show his dimples.
“Let’s just say that I’m thankful I don’t live at my mom’s and that Ben is at UCLA. The last thing I would want would be for him to come home to be puking in his room on the other side of the wall.”
Harry knew the layout of my mom’s house--he knew that Ben’s headboard was right up against the same wall that mine was. That made losing my virginity to him a little awkward when we heard Ben shut his door one night.
“You moved out?”
“I did,” I sighed. “I bought a house right up the street, actually. It’s right past the starbucks on the PCH near Steep Hill Canyon.”
He nodded--he was familiar enough with Malibu to know the general part of town. “So y’must come here often, yeah? Not just the first date spot anymore?”
I laughed, Geoffrey’s was the same cafe where we met for coffee when he asked me out in September of 2012. I did frequent it now, but it was still the first date spot. I think it always would be.
“Sinead loves the blueberry scone,” I shrugged. “I’m here at least twice a week.”
He smiled at this--it almost felt normal. It almost felt like it was before everything changed--before he walked out, before I walked out. Before we both left.
“Sinead always did have a love for baked goods,” he nodded thoughtfully, crossing his arms on the table. He leaned in a little bit and held my gaze. “How is she? How’s everyone? Your mum, Maya?”
“They’re good--everyone’s good. Maya’s graduating high school next month--starting at USC in the fall. My mom and Pete are good, Pete’s still at Jenkin and Fischer and my mom is still riding Nick’s ass about everything that has to do with me,” I rolled my eyes playfully.
My mom kept busy when my career really took off by being a co-manager with Nick. Nick handled all of the business, and my mom liked to say she handled everything else.
“How’s your mom and Gemma?”
“They’re good,” he nodded. “Gemma’s got a new boyfriend--he’s nice, he’s normal, I think.”
“He could be the nicest guy ever and you’d pick on him,” I retorted, challenging him a bit. He laughed and leaned back in his chair--he knew I was right.
We stayed like that for a while, he told me about how much he swam in Jamaica and the people he met filming the movie. I told him about my painting and I told him about the ocean. He asked if I’d written any songs and I shrugged--he immediately said he knew I had.
We stayed for a little over an hour--which didn’t feel long enough, but I’m not sure if anything would have. He walked me out to the car and hugged me goodbye. I heard the familiar click of a camera and I knew there’d be photos on every website within a few hours. I watched him pull out of his parking spot and drive away, as soon as I was sure that none of the photographers were following me, I cried.
THEN - Day 1138
I don’t think anyone realized I had a problem. I don’t think anyone looked at me and saw someone so deeply depressed simply because I knew how to act. I mean, I got paid to it, really. My life and my job depended on me being able to toughen up and put on a smile, even when it wasn’t real.
And I’m not mad at anyone for that. I’m not mad that so much of my life revolves around that. I’m just a part of a bigger machine that relies on me being okay.
Sometimes I’d open up about it, sometimes I’d tell Niall late at night when we had a few drinks and when Harry fell asleep. I’d watch his eyelids flutter on my lap in the back of their bus, and I’d recount my feelings to a drunk Niall--who was probably smashed enough to forget what I’d say by morning.
“What do you mean you wish you could stop?” He asked, bringing the beer bottle to his lips. Liam had already gone to bed, and Louis was out in the front on FaceTime with someone.
I shrugged my shoulders and laughed a little. “You don’t ever wonder what it would be like if you just--I don’t know--quit?”
He thought for a second, taking another sip to help himself process my question. “I mean, not quit, but take a break, sure.”
I nodded, even though he didn’t really get it. I didn’t mean a break. I didn’t mean take some time off and go on vacation--I’d done that.
I figured Niall would know what I meant. They’d long been talking about the fact that this tour was likely the last and the album they were finishing was probably going to be the last for the band. I’d spent many sleepless nights with Harry going over his options--a solo career, some time off, acting, anything but dancing with the stars, he’d say.
“Sometimes,” Niall said, letting out a laugh before he continued, “I think about if I just disappeared for a few days. Like if I just got absolutely wrecked in a pub and wandered home with some girl, how long would it take for one of these idiots to find me?”
I forced a smile. I didn’t want to tell him that he was missing my point--which made me feel more alone that I already did.
I looked down at a sleeping Harry--his hair was somewhat damp from his shower, but pulled into a bun at the back of his head. I felt bad for him--bad that he had to deal with my mood swings, my baggage, all of it. All he did was try to love me.
When Niall opened another beer and started talking about the girl he’d met a few weeks earlier, I knew it was my cue to get Harry to bed. I shook his shoulder a little, waiting for him to blink three times and stretch a little on my lap.
“C’mon,” I whispered down to him. “Time to go to sleep.”
He stood from the couch and rubbed at his eyes. I offered a peace sign to Niall as we headed for the door to the bunk area.
“Thanks for chatting, Marg,” Niall gave me a nod.
I sighed, trying to mask my disappointment. “Anytime.”
THEN - Day 45
I sat on the black couch in the studio--Harry’s feet were up on the coffee table beside me as he flipped through a magazine.
Niall was in the booth, arguing with Liam about a lyric over the microphone--his voice sounded distant and isolated.
I wasn’t sure if I was Harry’s girlfriend--I don’t think he was, either. Sure, I mean, he kissed me on my mom’s front step one night after sushi and now he was calling me every night before he went to sleep.
It was convenient, really--like the universe aligned to keep him in L.A. long enough for us to get this off of the ground--but I knew the holidays were approaching and their album was almost finished.
“I can’t listen to them anymore,” he said quietly, only loud enough for me to hear. I looked up from my phone and smiled at him. His friends had become mine, but I didn’t want to be the first one to share my frustration with the bickering. “Time for a walk?”
“What a wonderful idea,” I stood from the couch, smiling over my shoulder at him.
“We’ll be back--grabbing a coffee or something,” he shrugged, seemingly appreciative that Max, their engineer, was too busy responding to Niall’s question to even notice our movement.
He slipped out the door behind me, into the hallway of the building. Before I could even say anything, he had me pressed up against the wall, his lips against mine, laughter escaping his lips between kisses.
I’d never known something so exciting.
I let my hands cup his face, pulling him closer to me as I giggled into his mouth. “We can’t,” he kissed me again but I pulled away. “Just do that,” I rolled my eyes.
He let out a sigh, but his smile was wide on his face as he pressed his forehead into mine. “Sorry,” he said. “I just can’t help it.”
My stomach had that sinking feeling that comes with either really good or really bad things. This was a good one.
“I know,” I whispered, feeling the warmth of his hand on my side. “I wish we could just pause everything so you wouldn’t have to leave.”
He let out a breath, pulling his head away from mine. He took my hand and pulled me away from the wall, falling into step with him as he made his way to the elevator. “You can come to London after the New Year, we’ve got rehearsals starting on the fourth of January.”
I nodded--we’d run through our schedules a thousand times in the last few weeks. He had promo for the album up until the holidays, then he had time off, then rehearsals, then tour.
Mine looked somewhat similar, but behind him by a few weeks. “Will you come out for the opening show of my tour in May?”
He looked down at me and smiled. I think he liked when I talked about the future.
“Of course. I’ve got two days off right when you open, so it’ll work well. Maybe Niall will come, too.”
I rolled my eyes at this and smiled. “He can come if he promises to not argue with my audio techs about the diction of my lyrics.”
Harry nodded very seriously. “I’ll let him know.”
NOW - Day 1695
When I got home I found Sinead in the kitchen, going through the mail she’d just brought in. “Where were you?” She asked.
I set down my water bottle on the counter and put my hair up in a ponytail. “Geoffrey’s.”
She looked up from the envelope in her hand suspiciously. “With who?”
“Harry.”
She held my gaze for a moment, suddenly looking down at the envelope again. “How was that?”
She was doing that thing where she tried to pretend like something wasn’t a big deal--she didn’t want to make me anxious. “You don’t have to pretend it’s not weird, Sinead.”
She looked up again and then set the mail on the counter, she was waiting for me to just tell her how it went so she didn’t have to ask.
I sighed, walking around the island to the fridge. I’d been too nervous to eat anything at Geoffrey’s, so now I was starving. “He was good, though. I listened to the whole album last night.”
Sinead could always read me--when I got the email last night she knew I needed some time alone to listen. Knowing Sinead, though, she was dying inside to hear all about each song and give it a listen for herself.
Sinead, only five years older than me, had become a mix of friend and assistant. I mean, it’s hard to not become friends with the person who’s known every detail of your life for seven years, but I paid her to do a lot more than just hang out and drink wine with me.
She took a seat at the island while I pulled out leftover spaghetti squash and shoved it into the microwave. “What was the album like?”
I pressed the start button and turned to face her. “Weird--and sad. It’s basically his account of our break up, I think.”
“You think?”
“Well I don’t know for sure. I mean, there’s songs that literally talk about situations we’ve been through. But I wasn’t about to sit down at Geoffrey’s and say ‘hey, is this lyric about me?’”
She laughed at this. “Can I hear them?”
I let out another sigh--I knew she would want to, but I didn’t know if I had it in me right now to listen to them again. I didn’t want to cry in front of Sinead, even though that was something she’d long been used to.
At the same time, though, I wanted to listen again and get a better feel for each song. Sinead knew enough about our relationship to help me piece things together and decide which songs were about me.
We sat on the deck in the May sun and I ate my lunch and I brought up the flagged email in my inbox. Sinead had her sunglasses on, so it was hard to tell what she thought, but I knew she’d give me a complete rundown at the end of each song.
“Do you think that’s about you?” she asked at the end of the first one.
It didn’t seem like it was about anything specific, but I had a feeling that it reflected his feelings the summer before we broke up.
Sinead kept talking before I could answer her. “I mean, the whole like ‘maybe we’ll work it out’ thing seems to align with Niall’s reports.”
I laughed a little. Niall--in the time that Harry and I had been broken up--took it upon himself to remind me regularly that Harry missed me. He didn’t say that Harry had said that, but he made it clear that he knew he did. I didn’t quite believe him.
“Right, and the whole ‘we don’t talk about it’ thing at the end,” I let out a breath. “I think that’s about like--my anxiety. Cause he knew there was something wrong but we literally didn’t talk about it until we were in New York.”
Sinead decided that we’d give that one a ‘yes, it was about me’ rating.
The second song got a no--it was the single he’d released that we’d both already heard. We decided to skip it.
Sinead immediately smiled at the first line of the third song. “Do we have to even listen to whole thing to know this is a yes?”
I rolled my eyes. Maybe he knew someone else from where I’d grown up.
“It’s happy though,” I reminded her--as if the tone of the song immediately discounted me as a muse.
She let out a quick laugh. “Yeah, Margot, just because you broke up doesn’t mean he lost all happy memories of you.”
I knew she was right, but the upbeat and happy vibe of the song didn’t seem to align with the current state of our relationship. Sinead decided that this song also got a ‘yes.’
So far it was 2-1.
The fourth song was slower--it was the song that made me pour another glass of wine the other night.
Sinead listened solemnly through the first verse but frowned when we got to the chorus. I think she kept her thoughts to herself because I was quieter now. I could feel tears in my eyes again, but a few blinks kept them dry.
“That lyric,” Sinead pointed at the phone during the second verse. Harry sang something about refrigerator light--which was eerily close to a lyric that appeared in one of my songs from 2013.
“I know,” I said quietly, hoping she’d continue to listen.
She interrupted the outro, giving it a ‘yes’ before she listened to the end.
The fifth song was the single that Jeff had sent along. “Don’t skip it,” Sinead shook her head but didn’t make eye contact. “I want to listen to it again.”
I didn’t reply, I simply let my hands rest in my lap, picking at the chipped nail polish on my fingers.
“This is a yes,” Sinead said simply. “I always think about you and how we don’t speak enough? I mean, c’mon.”
I rolled my eyes and let the song finish, Sinead was quiet as we waited for the sixth song. It was much rockier than others--with lyrics that didn’t feel like they targeted me. I told Sinead that this one was a ‘no,’ but she argued that we should give it a ‘maybe.’
“There’s no way to know that it’s not about you,” she gave me an unimpressed look from across the table as the wind blew at her long brown hair.
“There’s no way to know that any of these are actually about me,” I countered.
She rolled her eyes and when the seventh song started to play, she let out a laugh.
“Okay,” she giggled. “I mean, based on your asthma and the fact that you’re on birth control, I’m gonna give this one a ‘no.’”
“Creative license,” I shrugged.
“What do you mean?”
“As a songwriter you automatically get to write about fake stuff,” I told her. “People always ask me what each song is about and sometimes the answer is ‘it’s about nothing.’ Sometimes it’s just words strung together.”
She nodded--Sinead was more than familiar with my writing process. Sure, sometimes I’d write songs that were about real, but sometimes I’d write songs about people I didn’t know or experiences I hadn’t lived.
“This one is a ‘yes,’” I told her when the eight song started. She raised her eyebrows at me, surprised that I admitted it.
She leaned in a bit, obviously wanting to get a good listen to the words. Again, she was quiet throughout the song, and when it was over, she only nodded in response. If anything, this was the song that made me the most angry--this was the song that so clearly called me out.
The ninth song was another one that I wasn’t sure of--certain lyrics sounded like things I’d said, and then others didn’t feel like they connected. Sinead gave it a ‘maybe.’
“Okay,” I paused, looking down at my phone. “This one makes me sound like a dick,” I said with a little bit of a smile.
“What do you mean?” she leaned forward and smirked at me.
“It makes it seem like I just left and didn’t give a shit,” I said the words like they were easy to produce, but they were far from it.
Sinead didn’t say anything, so I pressed play and watched her closely. It felt like the tables were turned--normally she was the one who watched me closely to wait for my reaction to something.
She kept her eyes on my water bottle and didn’t look up at me once.
I liked this one--not necessarily the words or the implied meaning that I was an asshole--but the strings in the bridge and the harmonies and the build before the outro were musically special. It had a touch of a classical feel in that moment, mixed with a touch of a desperate ballad.
When it ended, Sinead looked up and offered me a small smile--she almost looked like she felt sorry for me.
“‘We haven’t spoke since you went away,’” I said as I rolled my eyes. He couldn’t be more obvious with that one, and I was sure the whole world would know it. I left for rehab three days after Harry and I broke up, and up until yesterday, I hadn’t heard from him once.
“That’s what makes me angry,” I said quickly. “As if he was reaching out and I was not answering or something--he didn’t reach out either. I left and went to rehab,” I shook my head. “He didn’t even call me. He knew I went straight there and he didn’t even text me to check in.”
Sinead nodded--probably unsure of what to say. I knew she could hear the anger in my voice but I couldn’t stop.
“That makes me sound like a dick--the whole album does.”
Sinead took a breath and then sighed. “It also sounds like he loves you.”
I bit at my lip. “Maybe--but it sounds like I left him.”
“You did,” she said quietly.
“He left too, Sinead.”
She shrugged her shoulders and looked out towards the ocean. I could tell she was trying to avoid an argument. She was doing the thing where she was too afraid to tell me to drop it--she didn’t want to make me more angry than I already was.
“He left when I needed him.”
“You wouldn’t let him help you,” she was more firm now. Her tone was serious, which only made me more upset. She didn’t need to defend him--his album did enough of that. “You wouldn’t let anyone help you. Everyone tried--everyone tried to do whatever they could but you didn’t take it.”
I stood from the table--I didn’t need Sinead to tell me how much I’d fucked everything up. I knew that well enough. I’d spent the last eighteen months thinking about it and talking about it in therapy. I didn’t need her to rub it in.
I opened the sliding door and turned around. “Notice how everyone else stuck it out, though. You stayed, Nick stayed, my friends stayed--even fucking Niall stayed. But the person who claimed he loved me couldn’t handle it.”
Sinead just stared at me, her sunglasses still covering her eyes. She didn’t say anything, she just let me slam the door and walk away.

“TILL THE NEXT ECLIPSE”
By: Cheralyn Cruz
June 11, 2021
It was another sunny day, Anony woke up early in the morning to do her daily routine. She goes to the bathroom and washes her face with soap and puts on some skin care trying to make her face blooming to hide the pain she is enduring for a very long time. She faces in the mirror and she is cheering herself.
"You can do it! You can do it!"
The tears slowly fell into her eyes. She can't help herself but to cry again. She was so dumb broke and really don't know how to start all over again. She always wishes that she's still a little girl with no problems.
After she cried, Anony went to her almost empty kitchen, except the refrigerator, one table and chair, one glass, one rice cooker, one spoon and one plate. She is starving, she didn't eat yesterday and now she can feel that her stomach is knocking and pleasing her to eat.
Time flies so fast and it is already 4:30 pm, Anony changes her clothes. She is wearing a black dress and a comfortable sandal that matches her dress.
Anony was walking with a picnic basket. She went to a very quiet place, a place where a lot of people are there but no one is talking. She is in the cemetery to visit Lim.
"I am here again, how are you? I missed you so much".
Her voice is cracking.
"I missed you Buddy, you know what it's been a month now since you left me. It's been a month since the last time I saw your face and held your hands."
She is now crying and sobbing.
Anony lit up the candle and she spread the gasket to the grass and she lay-down. She can feel the air touching her skin and hear the birds singing.
"I really love to visit you here Buddy, I can relax and escape reality".
She got her phone from her bag and started playing a song.
"I thought some time alone
Was what we really needed
You said this time would hurt more than it helps
But I couldn't see that
I thought it was the end
Of a beautiful story
And so I left the one I loved at home to be alone(alone)
And I tried to find
Out if this one thing is true
That I'm nothing without you
I know better now
And I've had a change of heart"
"When you left me, I was so desperate to find another man. I thought it would make me feel better if I can find someone to replace you but I was wrong".
"I'd rather have bad times with you, than good times with someone else
I'd rather be beside you in a storm, than safe and warm by myself
I'd rather have hard times together, than to have it easy apart
I'd rather have the one who holds my heart
Whoo-oo-oo-oo yeah"
"I keep on blaming myself Buddy, I realized that you are the only one who can make me happy even in the hardest part of my life".
"And then I met someone
And thought she could replace you
We got a long just fine
We wasted time because she was not you
We had a lot of fun
Though we knew we were faking
Love was not impressed with our connection they were all lies, all lies
So I'm here cause I found this one thing is true
That I'm nothing without you
I know better now
And I've had a change of heart"
"What if I never got tired? What if I keep my patience much longer? Maybe your still here".

"I'm breaking up with you Lim".
Anony put all her things in the suitcase as you can see into her eyes that she's now confident to leave Lim.
"Why? Did I do something wrong? Anony please, don't leave me like this"
"I'm tired Lim, how many times did I give you a chance? I'm so tired Lim, please let me go".
Anony grabbed her things and walked away, leaving Lim with tears. When Anony closed the door and walked away Lim was so down on his knees and there's nothing he can do to please Anony to stay. It's been a year since their relationship became toxic to the point that they forgot where they started.
Weeks passed by and Anony didn't receive any messages or calls from Lim. She still loves Lim but she's tired of understanding and always forgives Lim for not giving her time. Lim is always busy to the point that they don't do the things that they did before. Going out and having a date, watching movies together, eating fancy dinner at fancy restaurants, they make surprises every monthsary and anniversary but they didn't notice that their relationship became more toxic, they didn't know what the reasons were, they just found out that the relationship that they built together is now over. They are now turning the page in a separate way.
It was a sunny day, the sun was so bright and the wind was so cold. The weather is so perfect for a vacation. Anony is in Siargao, so she decided to take a vacation where she can relax her mind. The Island is so perfect for all the people who want to relax and to escape the toxic world.
At 6:00pm, Anony went to the seaside where she could directly see the sunset. She lay down on the sand and felt the waves touching her legs. It is so refreshing, this is the first time she felt relaxed since she broke up with Lim.
"Thank God for this wonderful vacation". She sighs.
On the other day, Anony went to a restaurant to take her lunch. It is already 11am when she wakes up. She ordered one cup of rice, one piece crispy fried chicken and she ordered her favorite "kare-kare" a Philippine stew / curry complemented with a thick savory peanut sauce. ... It is made from a variation base of stewed oxtail, beef tripe, pork hocks, calves feet, pig's feet or trotters, various cuts of pork, beef stew meat, and occasionally offal or oxtripe.
"Don't mind if I join you for lunch?". A man said.
Anony turned her back, she saw a tall, handsome man with curly black hair, pointed nose and kissable lips. She doesn't know who the guy in front of her is.
"Su-sure". She responded.
"By the way I am Enzo, there is no other vacant seat, that's why I'm here and it seems like you don't have any company. Am I right?". He asked.
"Yeah, you can set there no worries".
"What is your name?". Enzo asked her.
"Anony, Anony Dela Fuente".
After that day, they always have an exchange of conversation either by call, text or chat.
Anony found out that Enzo is residing in Manila and is working as a government employee. Enzo is a policeman.
It's been a few weeks since Anony and Enzo have met. Every Sunday they go to church together and after that they eat in a restaurant and they go to a park to unwind.
Anony thought that by dating another man, she can forget Lim but she's wrong. She still loves Lim but she doesn't want to feel the pain that she felt when they are together. The toxicity of their relationship is slowly killing her.
One night when she was in her apartment, she received a phone call from Lim. She didn't answer it although she really wanted to talk with Lim. She decided to take a nap and shut down her phone.
In the morning when she opened her phone, she received a lot of text messages from Lim begging her to answer his call.
She received a call from an unknown number and when she answered it she really didn't know how to respond. Her knees are shaking and the tears in her eyes are slowly falling.
"Lim is dead, he committed suicide". A voice from another line.
...
After that incident, Anony kept on blaming herself. Her life became a mess. She ruined her life to the point that she also committed suicide. She stops working, she isolates herself, she never socializes with people and she also stops dating Enzo.
______________________________________________________________________________________
"Buddy! Buddy wake up!".  Lim is waking her up.
"I've cooked your favorite meal, kare-kare and fried chicken". Anony heard a sweet voice from Lim.
Anony opened her eyes and she saw Lim with a brighter smile. She is so in love with this man in front of her. The cute smile, the verdurous eyebrows, the pointed nose, the affectionate eyes, the kissable lips and his brown skin tone. Gosh! She is so in love with Lim.
"Really? You cooked my favorite meal? Owwww I love you so much Buddy you're so thoughtful and sweet". She hugs and gives Lim a kiss.
"I love you most Buddy". Lim responded.
When she fixed herself and went to the kitchen he saw Lim looking at her with a sweet smile.
"Buddy come here join me to eat". She said.
Instead of responding to her, Lim gave her a sweet smile.
"What was that smile for? Come here Buddy". She insisted.
"I have to go Buddy, I love you so much please take good care of yourself. You know how much I love you right? Stop blaming yourself, promise me that you will fix all your mess. Start fixing yourself, don't ruin your life because it's not your fault. I love you so much, this time I am the one who asked you to let me go. Let's turn the page separately, till our next eclipse my love".
Anony is crying after she hears that from Lim and she breaks down.
______________________________________________________________________________________
When she opens her eyes she is lying on the gasket. It was just a dream, she saw Lim in her dreams.
She lit the candle in front of Lim's grave.
"Thank you for visiting in my dreams Buddy, I love you so much. I'm so sorry. Till our next eclipse Buddy! Till we meet again".
THE END
