Stephen Strange x reader misquote #1
Strange: Don’t move.
You: Make me.
Strange: *smirks* You’re seriously challenging the greatest sorcerer who ever lived?
You: No, I’m challenging the doctor who made an oath to do no harm.
Strange:
Strange: Do you want me to take the splinter out or not?
You:
You: *deep sigh* Yes...

[After Bruce turns back after a battle]
Natasha: See, it wasn’t that bad.
Bruce: (mumbles) Yeah.
Natasha: Hey, at least you didn’t collapse or make those loud groaning noises. I’m gonna count that as a win.
Bruce: (protesting) I still turn back shirtless!
Natasha: (raises eyebrow) Do you hear me complaining?

"Doctor Doom's body was never found. It could be that he still lives his fierce life somewhere else, but from that day on, parent Beyonders would tell their godlings that if they did not do as they were told, the Doctor would get them. Such was Doom's monument, and perhaps it would not have displeased him."

The Many Illustrators of A Tale of Two Cities 4: Curtiss Sprague
Tumblr media
...& a guest book editor...
This week's is a special one. We'll dive right into this 1930 edition by first admiring all the silhouette art of its illustrator, Curtiss Sprague - but see if you notice something extra along the way:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And to highlight the last one for its marvelous misquote:
Tumblr media
Alright, have you noticed it? There's more than just ink coloring some of these pages!
Yes, this week we're not just taking a look at this 1930 edition - we are taking a look at this particular copy of this 1930 edition, which features not just Sprague's beautiful work...
Tumblr media
...but also the work of William*, a high school sophomore 92 years ago who clearly learned the lesson from my last post! *although perhaps not clearly enough because I personally can't tell for certain what his surname is by his signature😅
Tumblr media
Besides his coloring in Sprague's silhouettes, there isn't a lot more of his work written throughout the book - he did make sure to take plenty of notes in the blank pages, though!
Tumblr media
There is also this brief note (please comment if you can make out the word above the date!):
Tumblr media
As well as this subtle substitution (whoever C.E.S. is...oof!):
Tumblr media
William's work made searching through and scanning this particular book an absolute delight - it was a grounding and beautiful reminder that students have been idly writing in their schoolbooks for as long as school has existed.
Tumblr media
Thank you, William!
& the standard endnote for all posts in this series:
This post is intended to act as the start of a forum on the given illustrator, so if anyone has anything to add - requests to see certain drawings in higher definition (since Tumblr compresses images), corrections to factual errors, sources for better-quality versions of the illustrations, further reading, fun facts, any questions, or just general commentary - simply do so on this post, be it in a comment/tags or the replies!💫

Did you check out the first issue of the new Ultimate Spider-Man? I'd be curious to see your thoughts
Tumblr media
I was planning on letting it pass by me, zen-like. I kind of... disapprove of the entire concept. The more redundant universes Marvel creates (note that I say redundant, in that I like some AUs with recognizably different heroes and story lines) the more it approaches a DC-like level of story fragmentation, where nothing has to matter and everything runs on vibes. Every new restart survives an even shorter amount of time. It's a death spiral.
But alright. I may not know who Hickman is but some other people seem to like him. I'm Charlie Brown, the new title is a football, here's some of the whistling my foot makes as it flies through the air.
First off a disclaimer: comics are into longform storytelling these days, so almost nothing happens in this issue by design. This is a setup, not a story. I can point out some pettier dislikes, but I can't know what might turn out well yet.
I get that this is going to tie in to the Maker, but calling this USM is a bogus decision that is going to cause so much confusion down the line. It's like they didn't want to admit they were setting up yet a third story. See above grouch about redundant universes.
Uncle Ben being alive instead of Aunt May is a hell of a decision. But I like Hell Of A Decisions if they're pulled off with confidence. I miss og USM's ponytailed gentle old hippie Uncle Ben, I admit. He had a surprising amount of characterization, which I always liked about that series.
I... do not get... why they are homewrecking Robbie + JJJ for Ben. Like, I'm kind of offended on Robbie's behalf. og USM already put some of Robbie's plotlines into Ben--I mean, Ben Urich's hands, but this is more based on 616, isn't it? Robertson's personal moral compass and how that interacts with his job and his safety and his journalistic ethics AND his relationship with Jameson's short-sighted tendencies have been the core of his character for 60 years. Could we not think of something new for Uncle Ben to be doing instead of overwriting an existing character relationship and adding next to nothing to it? And Robbie's there and just kind of fine with the Kingpin's proposal as far as we see so far. This is probably my biggest complaint.
The kids could be an interesting element, but we don't really see any of that yet so it's purely potential.
The Harry fans seem to like this new Harold and his visual design so far. I suppose he's not fully flavorless but the flavor that is there is like. Salt and pepper.
MJ could stand to look older and have more characterization but that is not an original observation. Wait, she's definitely based off her 616 self and not her USM self isn't she? God why DID they call this USM, this is a structural publishing nightmare
The Goblin design is what people think the Raimi goblin costume was, which is not exactly a compliment. Also I *know* I'm the Goblin Fan but are there, really no other villains you could think of to open with? No? Is this the only plot point that's ever going to get adapted over and over again? Maybe it will be good and I'll be glad, I think! And then imagine Charlie Brown and the football again.
Tumblr media
Another thing that really got me was the churning camera angles on some of the simplest scenes here. I respect the dutch angle hustle, Chechetto, but if I'm feeling seasick while trying to follow a scene where people have a conversation while sitting down then you might want to rethink your strategy.

To misquote Roger Ebert for a second, "the penciler has learned from better comics that artists sometimes tilt their panels, but it seems he has not learned why."

The thing is, conservatives aren't technically incorrect when they claim that politicians and corporate media pander to minorities or put in buzz words to try and appeal to the socially progressive. You can definitely see that in, for example, a politician making a statement for Martin Luther King Day, but not doing anything to enact policies to further racial justice. Or, every time Disney hypes up its "first gay character" just to have it be a throwaway line from an unnamed man or a background kiss that's on the screen for under 2 seconds. Or during Pride month when big businesses change their social media logos to rainbow, but don't even have LGBTQ anti-discrimination policies on the book. Corporations and some politicians definitely see minorities and progressives as a population to be marketed towards and not as people to who deserve to have meaningful stories told about them or have rights that need to be protected.
But what conservatives don't seem to get is 1) that not every attempt at diversity and inclusion is superficial, 2) Plenty of leftists/liberals/ progressives will criticize corporations and politicians when their words are empty, and 3) conservatives are absolutely susceptible to the same pandering.
1) I feel like this point is obvious, but satisfying the "woke mob" isn't the only reason to write diverse characters. It's been said before, but sometimes people just exist! Sometimes those people are in the writer's room or director's chair! If the story being told reflects the real world, shouldn't the characters be like some of the people who exist in the real world? Why would all Starfleet captains be white? Why would there only be male jedi? You're telling me that none of the knights of Camelot, a fictional land, could be into eachother romantically?* Come on. Not everyone is a white, cishet male. Sorry to break it to you.
Also, stories can be made more rich and interesting when you have diverse characters and creators! Not that I really love Marvel, but a major reason why the costuming and set design of Black Panther was beautiful was because they drew on different cultures in Africa, as opposed to only the European styles in a lot of movies. We got to see styles and buildings in whole new ways, and it was gorgeous. Another Marvel example, but in Agents of Shield, they wrote a really twisty and interesting storyline that directly drew on an actor's mixed ethnic background (the actor has said in interviews how she used to be told she was 'too Asian' or 'too white' for parts and she finally didn't have to pretend to be one way or the other). Having different kinds of people creating art allows there to be more cultures to draw stories from, more experiences that can be authentically shown, and often just better art.
*From my knowledge, Camelot is based on Wales and gay Welsh people aren't a new phenomenon
2) Go look up critiques of "Rainbow Capitalism." You certainly can find them all over tumblr during June. Go look at people making fun of the FBI for tweeting out stuff in support of MLK Jr. given their outright hate of him during his lifetime. We know it's bull shit.
3) Conservatives get pandered to. Every time a politician invokes "family values", but doesn't support policies to actually better support families. Every time a politician claims to love the military and respect veterans, but supports making cuts to the VA. Look at the sheer number politicians who pose in their ads with hunting rifles! They don't really all hunt regularly. How many times have politicians misquoted the bible? Attempted to appear more religious than they really are to appease a Christian base? Hell, go look at the whole Starbucks coffee cup "controversy" from a few years ago. Did the politicians really think Starbuck's having a plain red cup during December was somehow newsworthy? It wasn't an attempt to drum up anger in a conservative base? If a big store tells everyone "Merry Christmas" but they don't allow all their Christian employees to take off the 24th and 25th, how is that not pandering?
I know I am writing this on Tumblr and so I'm preaching to the choir. The vast majority of people here aren't conservative and I'm pretty sure no conservatives follow me. It just frustrates me like hell when I see conservatives online or in person talking about "pandering to appease the woke mob" and they aren't technically incorrect, but they are so very wrong. I just needed to yell into the void. Because, come on!

*Uh, oh.*
*Hey, Mr. Afton?*
Yes, what is it?
*I found the original post. It was “huggable”, not “cute”. Sorry about the misquoting.*
…So that means I should dress the opposite way?
*Unless you wanna go through with your first plan, like you used to do. If all else fails, I could see if I can get your Dave Miller look back up for a good chunk of the visit.*
If you can restore the ability to shape-shift at all, that would be marvelous.

Trust me, I have a pretty good idea this is the way it should be done ~ day 3
Welcome to day 3 the prompt for today is  It’s a misquoted day Kurt: I trust Adam. One of the Apples: You think they know what they’re doing? Kurt: I wouldn’t go that far. As you con guess this is going to be tooth rotting fluff and humour.   The story can be read at ff.net, ao3 or after the break line
Kurt had never pretended to be anything but a creature of comfort, a city boy at heart.
Which was why it might have been pretty strange to see him in the middle of the woods, in a cabin on a lake.
The fact that he was not alone there, but other people known to be his friends were there as well, might have clued in an observer that maybe the location hadn’t been Kurt’s idea in the first place.
Which to be fair, was exactly what had happened. The idea of a long weekend together to celebrate completing another successful year of their education had been Willow’s.
The cabin in the middle of nowhere with access to a crystal clear lake was actually Mathias’ doing. Or better his dad’s owned it and had no problem for all the Apples to actually take over it for a short vacation.
And like any proper american camping trip there half of the provisions were marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate. Because it was not a campfire evening if no one roasted marshmallows or made smores.
Of course not everyone had the chance to ever go to a proper camping break. Adam of course having been raised in the UK was the prime example.
Some of the Apples were raised in families that were part of the too rich, to bother to go on anything lower than a country club or resort.
Needless to say those were the ones super excited of going.
Kurt found it pretty funny that no one had asked him for help. Probably because no one ever thought that he, amongst them all could be of more help.
So when Adam, JJ and James insisted they were going to prepare the campfire without help Mathias, Erika and Kurt let the others to have their way and simply sat in the foldable chairs and observed.
As the beginning of their attempt looked promising, they divided and conquered the tasks of getting the wood, both a decent size log and thinner sticks.
Then there was the cleaning the fire pit and make sure to enclose the cleared space with rocks.
And that’s when the troubles started… Because none of the guys was being at all successful at starting the fire, and the daytime was slowly being consumed…
It wasn’t a real issue since anyway the campfire was not that far away from the front  porch of the cabin. They were not going to be in peril, trying to make their way in pitch black darkness walking through woods.
But still as JJ put it “It’s a matter of pride, we can do it I know we can, just sit there and let us do it.”
So Kurt and Erika just raised their arms in surrender and sat back once more, still watching.
After about another twenty minutes of them tinkering Erika turned to Kurt and asked with a raised eyebrow “You’ve watched them as long as I did, how can you be so calm seeing what they are doing?”
Kurt smiled and shrugged “I trust Adam, he has enough common sense to not start a wild fire and roast us all.”
Erika sniggered and turned to look back at what the guys where doing, or actually attempting to do. “Do you think they actually know what they are doing?”
Kurt snorted, quickly covering his laugh with a coughing it “I wouldn’t go that far, in fact you know what? I think I’ll go and assist, there are smores with my name on it waiting for me”
After saying that he stood from his chair and masterfully inserted himself in the process. Before the darkness descended, the fire was crackling as the flame danced toward the starlit sky.
As Adam marveled at the preparation of smores, he leaned forward Kurt and kissed his exposed neck murmuring softly “Thank you for coming to the rescue in such diplomatic way”
Kurt chuckled softly and turned to capture Adam’s lips than said teasingly “I might be a city boy, but that had never dissuaded my dad from having a family camping trip all my life. Yall are getting off light for your first time, we have a cabin with solid walls and real beds to sleep in.”
At Adam’s widening eyes Kurt took the teasing a little further, winking as he said “Maybe next time we could have the chance to make love under the stars… For now best I can do is share a bite of my smore as you prepare yours.” ~The end~ For the complete list of prompts
For the list of all the submission for the Kadam Week 2022
