Tame the undergrowth
The landlord of the Medusa's Head wants a beer-garden. He has a convenient spot picked out, but the ground is choked with sucking daffodils and other botanical predators.
→ Aggressive gardening The plants of Fallen London scoff at photosynthesis. They get their vital nutrients from whatever they can grab and squeeze. The landlord provides you with a machete and a stout set of overalls.
Take that, you God-forsaken vegetable! You spend a profitable afternoon lopping back daisy chains, trampling copperweeds and ignoring the plaintive screams of the Cri-de-Coeur geranium. You've cleared a small patch of garden, and the landlord is pleased.

"the way they killed medusa was stupid" "using the hat to kill medusa was dumb" that's because this show isn't written for action and blood and gore its written for STORYTELLERS ofc the "fight with medusa" wasn't epic and bloody that would defeat the whole point INSTEAD it was symbolic and set up narrative arcs. it was annabeth passing on the invisibility her mother cursed her with to a woman who was cursed never to be seen. it was paralleling the original perseus myth where he uses the helm of darkness alongside his shield and shoes from athena and hermes. it was setting up the conflict between percy and annabeth about giving up the hat and making annabeth suffer an emotional loss to go on with the quest versus imposing the consequences of medusa's story and tragedy on the gods themselves.
imagine watching a scene where annabeth increasingly gets defensive and 12-year-old lashing out with "but my mother is always just" "that isn't how the story goes" and "you're a LIAR" imagine watching the air go out of the room as "i'm a survivor" "i was you" "i would have been content to worship her for a lifetime... in silence" medusa breaks her calm demeanor at having her story erased once more imagine watching annabeth appear out of nowhere and make medusa disappear with the powers that athena granted her so that a son of poseidon can murder her and your main thought being "awwwww but i wanted it to be more epicccccc i wanted blood and gore and decapitationnnnnn" imagine missing the whole point of the entire percy jackson series that bad

having sally yell at baby percy feels so fundamentally wrong. i didn't mind when she got frustrated with him in the pool because that was just one instance of sally losing her temper but now it's like oh. this is just how the show version of her is.
like. idk. one of sally's defining traits was that she never got mad at percy. that didn't mean she was weak. that was her strength. that she could pull through tough times by putting a smile on her face, so that she didn't scare percy, so that she could protect him.
i just feel like it would have been a much more well-defined scene if we got to see how sally manages to talk percy out of the car by. being nice?? coaxing him??? explaining the situation in a way he would understand instead of just saying "there are things i have to do that you don't understand" (if you say that to a kid they are 100% not going to listen to you bc. yeah they don't understand!! so you have to explain it in a way they WOULD understand!!)
if sally had already been dating smelly gabe at this point, she could have leveraged this. she could have put a funny spin on it and said "i'm just trying to get you away from smelly gabe's stinky gym shorts." if she wanted baby percy to not feel like she was abandoning him and separating him from the rest of society, she could have said "the kids in there are just like you." she could have given him a keepsake, to show she will always be with him. there are SO many ways the writers could have spun this and they just didn't. they went the easy way out.
all of these flashback scenes are painting a very unfortunate picture that percy didn't actually have a good relationship with his mom. and i know that's not the vibe the show is trying to go for, but they've got to understand!! that not everyone who's watched the show has the read the books! we don't all automatically know that sally and percy have the bestest mother-son relationship ever! if you only show sally being frustrated at baby percy, we start to think oh dang, maybe this whole time percy doesn't actually have a good relationship with his mom!

This might be a hot take but Sally Jackson would not have approved of Annabeth pleading with Percy to stop attempting to kill Akhlys, and making him promise not to use poison ever again.
Like, this is the woman (the queen) that upon hearing that her son wanted to kill her abusive husband didn't disapprove. She just went, 'nah, I'll do it myself.' I guarantee you, if that scene with Akhlys happened with Sally nearby, she would've found a weapon (likely Percy's sword, Riptide) and she would've sliced of Akhlys' head. She would have finished the job for Percy.

Rowdy times at the Medusa's Head
Rat-catchers, spider-crushers and monster-hunters drink here. If you want to be anything on the Hill, you'll have to prove yourself.
→ Arm-wrestle a rat-catcher A realistically defeatable opponent. Although still a respectably muscular one.
Success! You've won. Scarred men bristling with weapons clap you on the back and buy you drinks.
→ Arm-wrestle a Clay Man A much more challenging opponent. Clay Men are employed in the nearby docks to do the work of any three normal men... but they're not too bright.
Astounding! You took advantage of the poor fellow. You started before he was ready; you distracted him by singing energetically, and then by pretending injury; and you kicked him under the table. You are cheered, and bought drinks. Clay Men are not popular.
→ Subdue unruly drunks Ensure the guests behave, pay, and don't throw up on anyone too important.
That'll show them. You knock heads together until all the troublemakers are unconscious, or have remembered their manners.
→ More than just a landlord The Cheery Man, the landlord of the Head, is connected in alarming ways. Perhaps you could engineer a conversation with him.
A sceptical grunt "Let's talk later."

Image description: Digital art of Umineko: When They Cry. Battler Ushiromiya, white as a statue, has an arm raised in triumph, but his bloody fist is closed around nothing. His own head has been severed from his body and is lifted up by the silhouette of Beatrice. He stares forward in shock. Above his head hovers a forward-facing head of Medusa, wide-eyed, grinning with boar tusks, tongue sticking out. The background dissolves in loops of smoke between brick-red, dark yellows, and blues, with chessboard-square motifs, the scissors of the Fates, and the abstracted bodies of some of the people on Rokkenjima curling behind Battler. End ID.

Episode 4 thoughts
I haven't been posting about the episodes because I didn't feel a need to with the first three.
This, though?
Thank Miss Athena for this one, because Owl-Eyes PISSED ME THE HELL OFF with that little petty stunt.
I am well aware that Athena is petty in mythology. Hell, she's even petty in Percy Jackson (see every instance here she discusses Percabeth and how she doesn't approve of the Son of Poseidon). Yes, I am aware of all of this.
She...
Oh, gods, help me.
SHE SENT THE FUCKING *CHIMERA* AFTER HER DAUGHTER, LETTING IT INTO HER *OWN TEMPLE*, TO PUNISH ANNABETH FOR NOT STOPPING PERCY'S IMPERTINENCE.
ANNABETH. HER PRIDE AND JOY. THE MOST FORMIDDABLE DEMIGOD ALIVE WHO WILL ONE DAY ACHIEVE A QUEST THAT NO CHILD OF ATHENA HAS COMPLETED IN *TWO THOUSAND YEARS*. SHE PUNISHED HER FOR SOMETHING *HER FRIEND DID*.
This shouldn't make me as mad as it does, but I'm someone who proudly declared Athena my favorite goddess when I was in middle school (before I read PJO) and kept her as my favorite for a very long time. She has toppled a very long way from that throne in my heart and Miss Ma'am, you had *better* make it up to your baby girl or I will be throwing these dam hands.

You're telling me Nesta Archeron, the human girl with the AUDACITY to steal from the literal goddess of the Fae, who got every High Lord to listen to her without using threats or aggression, doesn't end up as a High Lady, but Feyre a girl who nearly cost Prythian the war on Hybern over a stupid vendetta is? Sounds fake to me.
