“Wait I thought you liked them?!” - pt 1.

Okay so this a tentative draft of this post so tell me what y’all think?

Miles was so excited that he could hang out with his friends in the Spider Society headquarters now! This was great! They had all planned to meet up later that day but Miles had shown up a bit earlier hoping that he’d be able to see Peter B. Parker and Mayday. He really wanted to just catch up after everything. So when he found Peter and learned that Mayday was at home with MJ, he was disappointed he couldn’t see her but glad that they would be able to focus on catching up.

They talked about how Peter and MJ made up and had Mayday, how Miles had been doing in school, and some of his more recent art in the sketch book he brought with him on the chance that Mayday would be there. He had brought an extra for her, figuring that they could bond over drawing, or scribbling in Mayday's case, but since she wasn’t here it was still nice to share his art with Peter. As they moved on talking about more Spider-Man related things Peter decided it would be the perfect time to tease Miles.

“So Miles, I’ve noticed you’ve been working on some fancy moves lately. Tryna impress a special someone?” Peter waggled his eyebrows giving Miles a suggestive smile.

Miles felt his face burn as he wished he had kept his mask on. He began to chuckle out an excuse,

“Hah! -Um yeah, Pav was showing us some moves a while ago and he looked really cool! So it -uh inspired me! Yeah, to try some stuff out myself!”

“Uh-huh,” Peter responded with a knowing look. “And this has nothing to do with impressing a certain special spider”

“Yup! Totally! Just wanted to try out some cool tricks like Pav! Uh- yeah!”

Peter raised an amused eyebrow at him and Miles dropped his nervous smile with a sigh.

“Is it that obvious?”

“Oh Miles. Of course it is.”

“Of course,” Miles sighed “ You already know who it is don’t you?”

“Oh think I’ve got an idea,” he said flipping Miles’ sketchbook to a rather detailed drawing of Gwen. Miles’ face flushed as weakly defended himself,

“What! The long-on-one-side shorter-on-the-other hair makes for good contrast and tests my abilities”

“ Mmm hmm,” he smirked “and the sparkles surrounding the smiling face?”

“ It’s a cute smile okay! Very soft and radiant! The sparkles emphasize that!” He defended.

Peter chuckled, “Face it kid you’ve got it bad. Nothing to be ashamed about. Lord knows what a mess I was over MJ.”

Miles smiled back reassured and laughed it off with Peter.

“Yeah I guess you’re right. Anyways got any advice? How’d you get MJ to like you?”

“Oh kid, you’re in for a story!” Peter threw his arms around Miles and began to regale him with his and MJ’s epic love story. Unbeknownst to the two of them a presence in the hall was wide-eyed trying to make sense of what she had just heard.

Spoilers for Spider-Man 2099 comic run

Considering that the Spiderverse trilogy acts as a meta commentary on Spider-Man comics, I find it interesting in how this commentary applies to Miguel in both his comics and the films.

(Note: Everything is speculation).

At the end of Into the Spiderverse, we see Miguel in his Spiderman 2099 suit that’s based on the original 90’s run of his series. From that the audience can conclude that this particular Miguel is from the original 90’s run of Spiderman 2099. Also important to note that this 90’s run was cancelled, causing the series to end on a cliffhanger with many of Miguel’s interpersonal relationships being unresolved and him ending up alone. With Miguel in the post-credit scene of “Into” jumping into another dimension to form the Spider Society, the film is providing an in universe explanation on why the Spiderman 2099 90’s run ended on a cliffhanger, which is that Miguel essentially opted out of the narrative being written for him. Instead of dealing with the messiness of his relationships from his civilian life, Miguel prioritizes his duties as Spider-Man by going dimension hopping and starting the Spider Society to stop multiversal threats.

Connecting to Across the Spiderverse, we see Miguel reminiscing on how he went to an alternate dimension and took on the identity of another version of himself that has a family (ie. his daughter Gabriella). This could be referencing the 2014-2015 comic run of Spiderman 2099 where Miguel has a family (ie. his son Gabriel). The flashback not only shows more depth for Miguel’s character, but also alludes to his lack of a stable family life from the 90’s comics and him trying to rectify that in this alternate dimension (ie. Miguel fixing his relationship with his brother Gabriel by having a child named after him). This could extend to Miguel resolving his romantic relationships, that’s always been a point of contention, by potentially ending up with Tempest Monroe (from the 2015 run), Dana D’Angelo (his Gwen Stacy from the 90’s run), or Xina Kwan (his MJ from the 90’s run).

Despite Miguel’s insistence on “canon,” the fact that he exists is antithetical to this belief since his story should have ended due to the 90’s series’ cancellation. This could also explain why this Miguel dons a completely new physique and suit, along with having sketch lines in his design as he’s essentially writing a new narrative for himself.

I have not read the 2014-2015 volumes of the 2099 series, but from what I heard, these volumes completely deviated from the original 90’s run, with the majority of series being set in 2015 with Miguel having a happy ending with Tempest and their son by living on a remote island after his reality has been destroyed (an inverse on how ASTV Miguel inadvertently destroyed the alternate dimension). From a writing standpoint, it’s interesting to see a futuristic character adapt to modern times, but from a character standpoint (where the 90’s and 2014-2015 issues are in tandem with one another), Miguel seems like he’s going to the past to escape his past that takes place in the future. With ATSV Miguel choosing to live in an alternate dimension where he’s happy and has a stable family life, it parallels the way the 2015 run kinda ignores the 90’s run and just lets Miguel be happy. While it’s a nice sentiment, it prevents ATSV Miguel from fixing the interpersonal issues that plagued him in his home dimension and thus truly achieving a balance between responsibility and love that all Spiderpeople learn.

Beyond the Spiderverse will likely end with Miguel joining Miles’s side or the two finding a healthy balance point regarding canon events. However, I figure that besides Miles (and Gwen!), out of anyone who should oppose the idea of canon events, it would be Miguel as his canon story that is likely based on his 90’s run and has already been set in stone due the comics’ real-life cancellation. This in turn causes his character to end up alone and his narrative to end on an unfulfilling note (kinda mirroring Peter B’s starting point in Into the Spiderverse). By lacking a resolution, combined with the guilt of destroying an entire universe for the sake of achieving such, ATSV Miguel is left jaded and gives into the fatalism of the Spider-Man narrative by living a life based on sacrifice. But just like how Miles inspired Peter B and Gwen to no longer be constrained by the narrative of isolation that entails from being Spiderman, maybe Miguel can learn from Miles that he can move beyond the constraints of his cancelled run and in live his own universe where he can write his own happy ending.

This Toy Does Not Exist: ReSculpt

An experiment of using Midjourney's Describe and Image Prompting functions to remaster previously-generated AI content.

A ways back I did This Toy Does Not Exist, using LookingGlassAI, by manually training a diffusion model on hundreds of action figure pictures. I was strongly limited by my processor and the resources at the time, and eventually moved to Midjourney as I can only afford so many art tools, and it was the more powerful option.

For these images, I submitted the original This Toy Does Not Exist picture to Midjourney's describe feature. I then generated using the provided prompts, but also included the original image as an image prompt. Settings --s 50 --IW 2 --V 5 (style 50, image weight 2, version 5)

I then picked my favorite out of the sixteen images produced per base image (All AI art is curated, always remember that) . My goal, in general, was to produce stuff that still had that retro figure feel. Most of the stuff MJ produces is very modern, and my previous remaster attempts were similarly a little too polished and glyos-y for my vision.

I've been toying with similar processes on my old style transfer pieces, and a lot of stuff made using the specialized Artbreeder generators.

The limitations are apparent. The wilder stuff that the more basic AI didn't know was atypical gets smoothed out. In some cases, that's a help, as more abstract stuff can be re imagined into something more cohesive, but that AI madness is blunted a bit, and I like that aspect.

Of course, that's where human involvement comes in, as any of these that I might decide to actually sculpt will be changed through that process to fit my druthers of how it turned out. Because that's what AI makes well. Building blocks.

Explanations of the features used are under the fold. As everything here is autogenerated, it does not meet the minimum human expression threshold and is all in the public domain.

Describe is Midjourney's its own version of Clip Interrogator, which can derive a prompt from an image. It's looser than Clip Interrogator, gives multiple options, and generally makes stuff in similar vibes but doesn't match style or even subject matter closely without prompt editing. It essentially has the AI examine a picture, match its observed elements in its token-language, and then translate that back into an english-formatted prompt.

Image Prompting is an older feature that does essentially what Describe does, but it never translates the generated tokens back into words, and instead uses those tokens as a prompt, combined with a text prompt or at least one other image. These limitations are there to force novelty and prevent intentional overfitting/image copying, for the same reason the describe prompts are shorter and more vague than their Clip-Interrogator equivalents.

Image prompting is not the same as overpainting, wherein a base image is used in place of random JPG noise for the generation start. MJ doesn't do overpainting because of fears of its use for deepfakery and plagiarism. Ironically, that prevents people like me from sketching up our own layouts and using MJ to directly fill them in, but there's tradeoffs in every situation I suppose.

Not posting specific prompts because this post is already bloated AF. But anyone can use my technique.

This is Spider-Sketch, worlds sleepiest superhero. Born a generic snowy tiny town in Canada, parents moving back and forth until ending up having to leave him with his aunt and uncle in Vic York. (A mix of Victoria and New York, in sort of a limbo on wether or not it’s in Canada or in America) Going off on a trip and never returning, causing him to be raised by May and Ben from there on out.

Spider-Sketch’s real name is Hunter Oaks, he inhabits Earth-757 (my favorite number with my 2nd favorite number on the end) and ends up finding the spider society due to 757 Doc Ock getting into shenanigans involving multiverse travel. (Who will get his own post once I redesign him)

For his powers Spider-Sketch has everything you would expect, wall crawling, web swinging, enhanced strength, spider sense, etc. and some of his own ontop of that. Those being much higher pain tolerance (maybe even some sort of thin invisible exoskeleton?), enhanced hearing (because of the bunny motif) and maybe a few others if I can ever come up with any good ideas.

Rather than the classic tale of losing uncle Ben, Spider-Sketch loses aunt May instead. Another thing, rather than being in love with MJ, Hunter rather takes interest in Akheku’ s spidersona, Athan.

Other than a few obvious (and a few less obvious) deviations Spider-Sketch is pretty much just me, Canadian, Stubborn, artsy, etc. He’s constantly trying to convince villains to be good guys instead, trying everything he can to give everyone a redemption arc despite being told repeatedly to cut it out.

When it comes to Venom if it weren’t for the canon they would’ve likely been completely inseparable. Getting along like two peas in a pod despite one’s murderous tendencies and the others desire not to harm anyone or anything. Venom also has been slightly tweaked to work closer to how he works in the movie with Eddie rather than just being a black suit, he’s sort of part of the suit and part of Hunter at the same time, because I can and because I think it’s cool.

Anything else I’ve forgotten or that I add in the future I’ll add in a reblog most likely. His whole universe and story are still very much in progress

Okay so hi guys this is my first post here lol but the thing is I'm literally obsessed with ATSV rn and I made Spidersonas for me (left) and my two best friends. The one in the middle is like a math notebook universe or idk xdd it's literally based on my math notebook cuz me and my best friend never pay attention in math class. She's like a sketch. And also the M+J comes out PERFECTLY like r u kidding me?? Cuz her name is Joanna and she's in love with Miguel??? MJ???

And the one on the right is supposed to be a typical (get it?) 80's comic superhero yknow yknow.

And my Spidersona doesn't really have a stlye but it's really imperfect, there are gaps in the coloring things like that so idk.

The scene that I made up in my mind for this is that Joanna is obsessed with Miguel (irl as well xd) and she said something questionable and me and Emese (right) just react to it lol.
