Boromir for the character ask?

Yessssss my man! Boromir my love!

First impression

First, first impression when I was like 11 and in theatres seeing LOTR for the first time? I couldn't tell him apart from Aragorn lol - it was two white dudes with the same hair cut and facial hair!

More serious note, like most, when I was young, I found him a bit unnerving and even frightening. Then it shifted to no strong opinion either way and now, obviously, that's vastly different.

Impression now

Love him so much. The older I get the more I sympathise with him and what he was going through. All he had on his shoulders and the stresses of his position and the expectations his people had of him to be their stalwart defender against Sauron. Let alone the whole Family Dynamic.

He is a complex, wholly imperfect person and I really appreciate that about him.

Favorite moment

In the movies I'm torn between the bit where he's teaching Merry and Pippin how to sword fight and every Fraught Conversation He Ever Had With Aragorn (there were so many).

In the books I love his response to the Balrog being: I'm Gonna Fight it.

Gandalf: We're not fighting it.

Aragorn: No, he's right, we should fight it.

Boromir: drawing my sword! it's gonna happen!

Idea for a story

Not sure I have one off hand - obviously every iteration of Boromir Lives is a godsend to us poor mortals.

ahufflepuffhobbit will know where this came from lol - but I am enamoured with a story idea of Boromir and Aragorn and Eowyn being a power couple.

Boromir lives, somehow. Schematics aren't important. Comes to Rohan, so Eowyn is like: Oh Wow Yes. Both of these men are A+

And obviously Boromir would be like "yeah girl you kill that orc. I'll hold your mead." Aragorn would be like, "the two people I love are MANIACS who enable each other."

Anyway, let Eowyn be queen of Gondor!! She deserves it and two hot husbands!!

Unpopular opinion

Not an evil or bad man? He has nothing to atone for?

idk - I'm not sure I have one when it comes to Boromir. There are people who don't like him, but my general opinions and read of the man aren't super out of the ballpark.

Is my opinion that Tolkien undermined his own narrative purpose about love etc. by killing Boromir unpopular?

(My one like, "yeah I get it and think it's important to the story," is that Boromir's death shows the reality of the great danger they are all in and that no one is coming out of this unscathed and he represents those who went to war and didn't come home. All those sons and brothers for whom people buried empty coffins. It's an important role that is needed in the story. But Tolkien, stop killing off only people who have "done wrong".)

Favorite relationship

Merry and Pippin, obviously. The three of them have a fantastic dynamic and clearly they need to hang out together more often.

I also love the complexity and manifold layers of his relationship with Aragorn and we were robbed by Tolkien in not having a chance to see how that would have unfolded over the course of the books.

Because there is Boromir before some of the dire, insane shit the Fellowship went through together and Boromir after - and I wish we got to see that and how it impacted/informed/changed his relationships with people.

Favorite headcanon

He and Gimli are Bros! The only reason I didn't have this as "favourite relationship" (because it is), is because it's not strictly speaking canon.

But yeah, I headcanon that they bonded super quickly during the Fellowship and are just absolute besties. Boromir is best man at Gimli's wedding to Legolas. It's all great for everyone

What's your opinion on Charturo? It's one of my favorite ships and not many people I know even think of it as a ship.

Hmm. While I’ve read one to two one-shots about it, I’ll admit I don’t think about Charturo too often.

I guess Arturo isn’t really a character I usually ship with most of the other cast members, since a lot of them can’t stand his whole beauty shtick. Veronika is the one character I really like shipping with him, because she actually enjoys being around him. I headcanon her to think that his worldview getting morphed into what it is is very interesting and she likes to analyze it a lot. She constantly just wants to learn more about him so she can see why he is the way he is. (I guess that’s sorta true canonically, too).

But I’m getting off track. This is about Charturo, not Verturo.

I can definitely see the vision. At least in chapter one, Charles and Arturo are pretty similar, what with both of them being extremely condescending towards others, even if it is for different reasons.

Intriguingly, Charles actually respects Arturo at first, because he believes Arturo has a respectable occupation, and someone liking Arturo is interesting to see when everyone else seems to think he’s a creep almost immediately because of his worldview.

Speaking of Arturo’s worldview, him only respecting beautiful people, whether they be models, movie stars, etc. is probably the biggest roadblock for any Arturo ship, not just this one. How is he supposed to gain feelings for the person you ship him with if he’s constantly disgusted by their presence?

Usually the solution is to make him realize that the person you’re shipping him with is…now that he’s actually taking the time to look…really pretty. How did he not see it before? No, no, he’s being ridiculous. This classmate of his wasn’t to be respected in any sense. Yet…He couldn’t help but become entranced. If they let him, he’s sure he could help them be just as beautiful as some of the celebrities he’d worked with, though his classmate was almost on par with them already…

And then go from there. I haven’t read too many Arturo x anyone-besides-Veronika fics, but the ones I have usually do something like that. And I think it’s really fun! And literally every DRDT character is attractive, so it never feels too unrealistic. Maybe I’ll write something like that myself one day.

And this method could potentially work for Charles. Arturo watches him do chemistry stuff or whatever, and notices that wow, if Charles just took off those hideous yellow-tinged glasses (Arturo’s words not mine) and let him fix him up a bit, Charles could be not-ugly. Maybe even attractive.

As for whether Charles would return those feelings if Arturo fell for him…

Well, Charles is more complicated, because he can’t just see a pretty person and immediately start worshipping them. But I could maybe see it. He’s a scientist, and usually scientists possess a pretty hefty amount of curiosity, so he could possibly become curious as to what made Arturo the way he is, like Veronika. Other than that I’m unsure, though.

Maybe it’s because Arturo just doesn’t take up much space in my brain, but I’m struggling to see what Charles would actually…like about him?

Then again this is coming from the person who really likes Aceturo even though Ace would probably despise Arturo canonically. So I really want to hear your reasoning for why you think Charles and Arturo work together (unless you don’t have a reason and you like this ship just because. I totally get that, that’s how I am with some ships).

In conclusion, I don’t really get excited every time I see something about Charturo, but I don’t dislike the ship either. It just kinda exists for me. But I can see why you like it, at least a little bit. I’d love to hear more from you or others about why they ship it!

I understand the desire to not support problematic or worse, abusive celebrities, but sometimes I wish we could go back to not knowing much about these their lives. Listening to their music or watching their movies doesn’t necessarily mean you support every thing they do.

it's funny - if i may share some levity in this situation - because i saw a post about a band i adore two days ago, and the op was annoyed about fans misattributing songs to certain muses or trying to figure out who they were ~about~, and the tone was like, "can't you all just stop and focus on the music and the lyricism?" and op was well within their rights to say that, but i was laughing because...i've followed the band for as long as i've followed taylor, and somehow, not once, have i thought or wondered about or investigated who the actual subjects of their songs are. this is, imho, a neutral statement, it's totally fine that other fans do that, heaven knows i get it, but it's not how i engage with them specifically, and it hit me like, oh wow, every fandom is like this, if you get deep enough. because people are curious, and people are interested in others' stories, and fans want to feel included in that, and art (music especially) speaks so directly to us that we enjoy feeling an insightful connection to it when we're super attached to the artist. i'd never thought about it, because even though their music is profoundly important to me, my engagement level is different. it kind of gave me a perspective on how and why certain things affect us all in unique ways. and we could get into diaristic writing and the specific personality of that and the intentional creation of an invested fandom, but it's ultimately up to us how we relate to things. there are beautiful and awful aspects about many of us being very tuned in and online, and thus having a lot more access to gossip and to knowing details.

anyway, human nature is nosy lol and we also tend to hope that the artists we love align with us in some way, so it can hurt when they don't, but celebrities fundamentally can't line up with us due to the world in which they exist, which is vastly apart from our own. pedestals don't do anyone any good, and it's always a long way to fall. :( that said, there's a reason we do tackle things like abuse, misogyny, racism, prejudice, etc, and some of that is a reckoning because we've only begun to call people on it in recent memory. the entertainment industry ran unchecked on these issues for a long time. some things do indeed change with time - social mores of past decades, or centuries!, cannot be expected to match or be upheld to our own - so a lot of the question becomes, is there ongoing harm (or threat of harm) to other individuals or to vulnerable groups? if so, what can we accomplish by confronting that? can we work to break those barriers down, show that those behaviors are unacceptable, and uplift people hurt by it in the meantime? and we try to do what we can. for example, the #metoo movement is still basically a nascent thing, and we're still struggling every day to reconcile all of this and figure out how to change for the better. the fact of the matter is, we as fans are consumers with very little power to affect that. we can decide who to support and how to spend our energy/time/money, but our reach will always be limited. nothing is perfect or unproblematic. we can't expect that, but we try to keep improving.

i've said this repeatedly now, but if i needed people or art to be morally pure, there's absolutely nothing i could love and engage with ever. we read poetry and it moves us, quite often we don't know its personal inspiration. there are poems i cherish from poets who were definitely not great people. do i stop reading them, quoting them? there are films i love with actors i know weren't unimpeachable either, songs i love created by musicians with troubled pasts - should i never watch or listen to that again? is it a sin that i already have? (no.) my room is filled with items from things i'm passionate about, should i be canceled for my old hollywood movies and my cds and my disney princess figurines and my barbie dolls? (granted these are relatively tame things because of the person i am lmao. but you know what i mean?) i'm typing this on an electronic device that makes my life easier for me in my chronic illness, so does my comfort in using it make me a bad person because it comes from a bad company? like it's all so tangled and complex we'd lose our minds if we demanded complete purity at every moment. that doesn't mean we can't be very hurt by harm and bigotry, and it doesn't mean we shouldn't call things out or sit by while marginalized people are upset in our communities. again, it's all very personal boundaries and decisions of what to support and what we care about, even what we feel comfortable/safe speaking about - and a lot of the time those decisions are selfish (not a negative thing, necessarily, just true), because we care more about things that personally impact us. i try to be kind and aware and thoughtful, but i mess up or inelegantly handle things or act contradictorily too, because i'm a human.

i got off-topic, but i'm firmly of the belief that you can enjoy someone's work and artistry without condoning all of their decisions and actions, because people are always going to make mistakes or do things you disagree with. you have to draw your own lines. if i tell someone i won't engage with an artist's work because they're prejudiced or abusive, they have no right to tell me that i'm too sensitive or wrong for that, but i also can't dictate that they shouldn't do it either, that's their choice and anything else would be censorship. really horrific abuse and bigotry needs to be accounted for and stopped whenever possible, but i do wish we knew less about famous people's private lives and (often banal) commentary, and i REALLY wish we knew less about their sex lives (like nothing. i get other people like this, this is my demi self talking because i never understand the intense interest in this topic!), except that's hard to separate out when quite a lot of art is romantic and revolves around love (and i'm such a romantic, so see my conundrum here?). regardless, i do often wish there was a clearer border line between some art and artists. i do wish we could hold certain things on our own, with our individual experience and perspective, even though there's a richness and value in experiencing it as a community and in relation to an artist too.

sondheim said art isn't easy, and meant it as a creator (advancing art is easy, financing it is not, another inherent problem with art and capitalism being intertwined), but it isn't always easy for us either. he also said the art of making art is putting it together, that's what counts, and i feel we do that as individuals embracing it too.

just thinking about how blissfully happy i am not knowing a damn thing about that band because their music has unique personal meaning to me makes me wish i could magically erase a lot of information from my brain, and tbh there's a degree of privilege in that (the luxury to not know and not care isn't afforded to everyone), but it does make the experience of enjoyment much more fun and peaceful. sometimes we just want to explore art and be touched or comforted or surprised etc by it, and sometimes we just want to vibe, and sometimes we just want to love things. that's not a moral indictment, it's not a political praxis, it's not absolute agreement or condemnation of a creator. it simply is. we do need to allow ourselves more grace to enjoy art for art's sake. there is so little time or true pleasure in life. it's good to let the light in when we can.

Random Scooby Doo thought for the void: Daphne is the most versatile character. Because her main trait is being the “It Girl” and the definition of It Girl constantly changes with time.

Scooby Doo Where are You (1969) - This version of Daph is the Beauty in the Beauty vs Brains dichotomy that girls were shoved into. She is put together, slightly sassy, and everyone’s pick. Whether a girl is needed to fill in for a movie star on set, whether a kidnapping victim is required for a villainous scheme (except once), whether Fred needs pick someone when he splits up and looks for clues, she’s the top pick. Like every beauty queen Rom-Com lead, her flaw is being clumsy. She often gets called boring by modern day fans, but that’s because she perfectly conforms to expectations of the “perfect” girl. She has as much personality as many female leads in older movies. It’s just an understated humor, kindness, and class. She is a friend of the group. While the second wave feminists movement is going on, Daph represents more traditional girly womanhood and Velma represents the other options for girl (smarts, less fashion, etc. - it’s kids show so not much here, but most cartoons didn’t even have 2 female characters in the main cast unless one was a ditz, villain or the same character in a different color)

Scooby Doo Movies (1972) and the Scooby Doo Show (1976) - she does not change much. You just have more people appreciating her looks.

Scooby Doo and Scrappy Doo (1979) and the New Scooby and Scrappy Show (1983) - Not my favorite show tbh. Daph doesn’t show up in every episode and Fred and Velma are no where to be seen. Scappy Doo is overused to the point he becomes one of the most hated characters is all of Hanna Barbara history. Where Daph does show up, she has significantly more agency on the story. Without Fred or Velma to seek out mysteries or solve them, Daph had too pick up the slack. She gains more lines and shows that she had intelligence and her adventurous nature. Her character doesn’t change or become a genius. She just has room to speak (instead of just looking good). She starts taking a leadership role as the most grounded character. Her girly-ness is less emphasized as there is not another female lead to contrast against.

The 13 Ghost of Scooby Doo (1985) - The first big change happens and wow!! Daph has a Charlie Angels make over. She has Ferrah Fawcett hair. She has a 1980s vogue/ princess Diana jumpsuit. She is pilot. She is the leader of the group as they travel. She is even sassier. She is a friend, but more vocal. She is still the most grounded of the new gang, and known for her looks. But now she has morals guiding her (hi Regan era). Her kindness is still percent. But this is her first all over makeover following popularity of female women having active hero roles in movies in tv (instead of just damsel in distress, love interest of action star, femme fetal, etc.). She is clearly still the same character but now in Charlie Angels font

A Pup Named Scooby Doo (1988) - Daphne in her Molly Ringwald phase. Now sporting the most popular color for girls (you can read marketing essays about the 80s but the pink was picked on purpose), Daph is back. She has valley girl levels of shopping and fashion love. She is not pretty- she is passionate about clothing, She is now super rich to match the “Greed is Good” consumerism of the era. She even has a butler and is allergic to cheap fabric. Her main look comes from teen qeeen of the brat pack Molly herself - just look at the bob. She is still kind, still sassy, and still a great friend of the gang. She just got a John Hughes and 90210 update.

Scooby Doo on Zombie Island (1998) and Scooby Doo direct to video movies until Cyber Chase (2001)- Meet Career Daphne! She is a news anchor/tv show host. She rocks a suit. She leads the chase to find a mystery! She is excited for the ghosts and an adventure. She loves and misses her friends. She is full of heart. She is still girly, but in a more adult way. Love this version. Her interest in Fred is confirmed in witches ghost. She is a friend, kind and sassy.

Scooby Doo (2002) and sequel - the live action movie explicitly goes into Daphne’s transformation from damsel to black belt bad ass. She is played by Buffy. She is still known as pretty, but shows that she does not want to be just a pretty face. She is still a little sassy and kind (at least to everyone who respects her Fred and Velma). She is forgiving. If doing a character arch about the gang, not being friends, this is how you do it. It’s them learning to come back together. And work through the issues stated early on. She is a little whiny for my tastes, but clearly still Daphne. In the sequel, she is truly herself. Being a true friend to the gang. Helping Velma. Being good at fashion and girly things (and not being weak because femininity isn’t equal to bad or less than). Being kind and sassy

What’s New Scooby Doo (2002) - Following the popularity of the movies, a new reboot came. Daph keeps here black belt skills. Her 13 ghost action hero tendencies turn into sports movies athleticism. She can surf, etc. She loves fashion and makeup (and again that doesn’t make her a bad person which is something media likes to do so round of applause scooby). Still pretty, kind, sassy, rich and a great friend. She continues on her trajectory to be an active role on the team.

Direct to video movies (2003-present) - honestly this is my favorite Daph! She is everything that came before. She is pretty, kind, sassy and a good friend (the core - though pretty is less her and more how others react to her). She is still a blackbelt. She can still fly planes. She is still understated to the point others don’t know her talent. She still has her unspoken thing with Fred. She is still the most most athletic and action-hero like (just look at her be a jousting knight). She is still rich (and her family has a castle in Scotland). She is still girly, fashion oriented, etc. and most times that is used positively (F you Frankenstein fat phobia movie). The best of these movies are made by people who love scooby and prior versions. The worst can disappear to the past because we have so many good ones (hi lochness monster, where’s my mummy, abracadabra, camp scare, sword and scoob, etc.) yes the characters here change too over time but there is still a uniform feel to them even as the animation gets cleaner and more modern

Scooby Doo Mystery Inc. (2010) - Hello to the Twilight Bella lovesick version of Daph. Honestly not my favorite (I do love the series), but I never liked Bella that much either. Daph is still pretty, kind, sassy, rich and a great friend. But now she pines for Fred like he sparkles in sunlight. She still has that it girl factor cause if people to pick her to join the Hex Girls or as a romantic interest. She is no longer shown to be particularly popular. Just a nice girl with a weird hobby. She is still girly and fashionable, but the show shows how that passion isn’t any weirder, worse or less valuable than Fred trap making hyper-focus. She now as dynamic family issues, but her found family is clearly the gang.

Be Cool Scooby Doo (2015) - a good show ruined by bad design. Daphne here is a mix of Jenna Marbles and Mable Pines. Like the YouTube royal, Daph engages is random weekly gags and is would not be surprising is she decided to randomly apply 100 layers of lipstick for shits and giggles. Quirky as Mable she loves her hobbies and puppets. She goes full tilt for her “trending” gag of the week. She still had that “it factor” that makes her a spectacle wherever she goes. Now it less visual and more action based. But you still can’t look away. Her looks for the first time are not emphasized. But She still is recognizable visually. She is still kind, sassy, and a great friend. Honestly, loved this update for a gen z Daph.

Scoobynatural (2018) aka that supernatural episode where same and dean get sucked into scooby Doo - while not scooby oriented, this works. She is kind and a good friend. Has an unspoken thing for Fred. Has that it factor that draws people in (or at least dean), but is unaware or uninterested. She is sassy, but never cruel. Her existential crisis is hilarious (but weird since she, shaggy and scooby are the main 3 who deal with real ghosts thanks to the 1980s). Totally acceptable version.

Scooby Doo Guess Who (2019) - this was a return to form. She is an more exaggerated version of her What’s New Scooby Doo persona. Honestly, this show holds less of an impact for a reason. It wasn’t an update for a new audience. It seemed a little tired to me to do the same thing as 17 years prior. A lot changed in that time. Not bad, just not much new to say.

Scoob (2020) - character design is great. She is called the heart of the group. Introduced as Wonder Woman - showing off her pop culture update (we are in the ears of comic book movies) and heroic character. Honestly, the human gang needed more screen time. But she was kind, a good friend, and had some sass.

Velma (2023) - This is a bad version of Daph (at least so far… maybe they will do a character development thing later on). It’s bad because it fails to keep Daph’s core traits. Let’s talk about the things they did decently. She is no longer rich. This is the eat the rich era so this makes her more likable and less like Musk. She is shown to be pro-rainbow. Again, this is great. Gen Z and aloha are the most tolerant generation to date. She kisses Velma (something hinted at in What’s New Scooby Doo). She has lesbian moms. Having the it girl be diverse says the best thing about our society’s changing culture. You can be “it” without being white. They made me dislike my favorite character- WTF?? Also, hate her over sexualization. She is a teenager in this series!! Yuck! Every iteration was made to appeal to the next generation. So why was this version made like an early 00’s, pre me too, oversexed mean girl? Supernatural one off episode was an exception to the rule because it was not cannon and because we were seeing Daph through Sam and Dean’s words. They didn’t show he as a teenage and naked. Also, she is never trashy. This is trashy. Again maybe they will do a story arch to see her becoming Daphne, but she is not Daphne now. Being popular is not enough for her to have “it”. She im does not draw your eye or the eye of other characters on the screen. Being hot, is treated as being vapid and shallow. So much for showing girly girls that it’s okay to embrace your femininity because you won’t be a bad person. Hello “I not like other girls” mentality. She might as well be an animated character…. Which would be fine is it were an animated riverdale version that still had her core traits. This is just an unrecognizable rando with red hair.

In short, Daphne’s character is that if the kind, sassy, good friend with that “it” factor that draw characters of her world to her. She is visually pretty with red hair and in purple (with one decent exception). The add-ons to her personality change with what is popular at the time. Making her the versatile character in the gang. With every reboot, she represents the most recent trends for admirable feminine characters. SHE IS NOT A BITCH

Ok so I looked for Lord of the Rings to see if there were any major non-white chracters. There are not, it seems. However, I did find this one video that poses as being super fucking woke whilst actually just being incredibly racist and I thought you'd all like to see it.

Now, you might notice that it says all the words spoken by a person of colour in the movie. That tells me they mean the characters and not the actors. Now, in terms of race in Lord of the Rings, they're right, race in Lord of the Rings is moreso surrounding the differences between humans, orcs, hobbits etc; unfortunately this video's premise is built on real-world ethics so I'm gonna have to rule it by that, also they said "person of colour", again forwarding that same idea.

So the video that's like "wow, only less than a minute of non-white characters speaking? That's so racist." Actually said "The Orcs are clearly POC." If you can't tell, that's really fucking racist.

To circle back, I will say it's not exactly great that, in the movies, there aren't any notable non-white characters. Frankly it does feel very strange to me that there are literally none (Shagrat doesn't count because he's not human, already covered) however it is worth noting that I'm not as into LotR as many others are, I haven't even read the books. For all I know there could be some that got cut from the movies that were in the books. In the movies they could have swapped the races of people and I'd have been none the wiser. The best way to see it, JRR Tolkien does have accounts of racism and his work will probably reflect that to some degree, authorial intent is important after all, however have you thought for a minute that how you see it as a viewer probably says more?

the theater songs are slightly differently delivered than in the movie, which I found sounded unnatural. they really have to sing fast, wow

live theater is really cool!! I haven’t been able to see any in years, and the lighting, effects, design, etc. are all so different from film and tv, they have so many more limitations but also unique opportunities that tv doesn’t. and I really loved to see how they put together each set right there on stage and how nothing looked *realistic* but the performance has its own character because of it

les mis has some of my favorite theater songs of all time, but also some of the most boring :/ ‘bring him home’ and ‘drink with me’ barely have real melodies. also im sorry but all the lyrics to ‘I dreamed a dream” are very juvenile. I get that fantine is young but those lyrics just sound ridiculous

but I really loved master of the house and lovely ladies, those are SUCH fun songs. I think the thernardiers were some of the first villains I saw onscreen who were just really fun with it

even so something that drove me crazy about valjean was in the books he would just not enjoy himself or let himself be happy. catholics will love to suffer. catholics will present suffering as a noble thing to do in life so you get rewarded in heaven. drove me up a wall. in the book he literally had no reason not to be with cosette he just felt unworthy of her or something and would just stop visiting her even though they missed each other so bad

oh wait it’s because he told marius about him being a convict but not about anything else in his life and it made marius cut him off because he thought he was evil or smt even though valjean later revealed that his wealth was from an honest idea he had and they reconcile just before he dies. so what was the fucking point, anyway? be as miserable and noble as you can die and then get to heaven because you were Good (tm) ugh

also, why didn’t valjean just tell marius who he was? he knew cosette loved marius back, what need was there for him to do this elaborate sewer crawl after marius was injured? what if marius had been shot dead, huh? like I know the character reasons for his determination to do everything in the most secret way possible but it would have made things so much easier

don’t love how women and sex workers are treated about by any of the versions or how cosette is treated by valjean or marius like she can’t handle the truth but for 1860s, not as bad as it could have been?

but the themes of just...kindness and second chances and forgiveness and sympathy for the most oppressed and mistreated members of society and doing right by others and loving them is so fucking good anyway

hi doe! its me again. (wow this ask got long — feel free to disregard at any point). i was wondering what your thoughts, as a writer and reader, are with regards to writers writing about cultures or religions that are not their own in fantasy settings? i’ll give you an example from my perspective. i love researching and i love adding things from all around the world into my stories. i was torn about naming a character as an Aztec god, or writing them as an original character but drawing their characteristics from this god, with inspiration from other sources.

i feel as though, as a white australian, by naming them specifically as Aztec, i would be doing a disservice to Mexican people and people of Aztec descent, similar to stephanie meyer writing jacob’s tribe into her book, where many feel now as though she was capitalising and commodifying a culture that has nothing to do with her and not only that but enforcing white colonialism (the topic is nuanced, but that’s one criticism i’ve seen). i would never want to do that!

i also wonder about this with regards to Judaism, which i do not expect you to speak on specifically, it’s just an example. like, i want to write fic about dean and cas being counsellors at a Jewish summer camp a la wet hot american summer, bcos that movie is a banger and also i can’t see them as any religion/faith except Jewish. i know a lot of my Jewish mutuals would be cool with that, but i just want to do it in that doesn’t hurt anyone, is well researched, and is also fun! same with the original example.

and also i understand that you are just one person with your own opinion, so if other people want to weigh in i would love that! 💜

okay I've been thinking about this ask for a while now, and you're so right in saying that I am just one person. and i am still growing. any opinions i have right now are informed by my experiences so far and personal biases, and I'm always open to learning and understanding and being better. so i want that to be a disclaimer to anything i might say here. take it with a huge grain of salt, don't hesitate to tell me if you feel like I'm being stupid about anything.

I spent a lot of time on "bookternet" before i got active on tumblr again, and this is a pretty common topic of conversation there. i feel like I've basically run through all kinds of arguments for and against doing this in books and my thoughts are. a little complex. so let me try and order them for you.

First of all, i think there's a huge difference between a writer wanting to write a different culture into their book if they're self-publishing/posting it on the internet v/s them doing it when they're going the tradpub route. Traditional publishing is pretty fucked up as an industry, and very unfairly skewed towards cishet white authors. Not only in, like, picking their books up in general, but in how much they get paid/the marketing budgets for their books etc., So I'd definitely advice *against* completely basing your book on a poc/marginalized culture if you wanna get published traditionally.

Secondly, i think, as well-intentioned as it might be, research is just. not enough. I mean it's okay if you're writing fanfic and/or are posting your story online for the time being. Because, again, i feel like in these scenarios, it is more about just exploring the craft, as it were, and learning to navigate these tough questions. And you'll make mistakes and that's fine. But even then, it's always better to. like. bring someone in to do a sensitivity read for you. Of course you can't always gauge how this will be recieved by your audience, but it's still going to help in some way! And take their feedback seriously. if, in the end, you have to axe something, you should just do it, no questions asked! (think Naomi Novik, when she edited bits out of the finished edition of A Deadly Education when the final ARCs went out and people had a lot of criticisms!)

And lastly, always constantly self-examine! Definitely think about your motivations behind wanting to add these elements to your story. why are you doing it? is it exotic to you? is it strange and new? or are you trying to tell a story that needs telling? i have absolutely nothing against casually represented characters, but there's a line there where it can turn into something exploitative and i think you should be consistently working to make sure you don't cross it.

Now, as a reader, i don't have the ability to know that all this work has been done. but i think it comes through in some way.

when I'm picking up a book, if i see that it's entirely based off of my culture and the author is white? i am literally quaking in my boots ajgdjskd. i don't mind if there's a side character or another main character, even! — Victoria schwab is one of my faves and one of the main cast of her most popular series, ADSOM, is like. brown. Fantasy culture but still. it was fun and i don't think she needs to be cancelled or whatever, because she made the world so that it all kind of fit in.

but i do get uncomfortable when the entire world and the in-canon culture and people are based on a poc culture. like that's weird and sus. i might still read it, but I'll be extra careful because sometimes the things that can feel violent will be super small and you'll be upset for weeks over it and it won't make sense but yeah.

in conclusion, i think it's okay if you want to borrow these elements as long as you not only do the research, but actually reach out to people and make sure you didn't accidentally do a racism in the story. don't make it all about them, tho, because that will never be your story to tell, and you won't be able to do it right. and that's just. idk. i think it's worse than having no story at all sometimes yk?

i hope this made sense it's hard to. like. properly express what I'm thinking bc this is a very complex topic and i think I'd do better in conversation but yeah. good luck!

The month of May is observed as Mental Health Awareness Month. Discussions, Film Screenings, Events, etc., are conducted throughout the course of the month to shed light on this crucial topic. However, there is one mental health topic that is usually ignored, which is eating disorders.

Eating disorders like Anorexia and Bulimia are characterized by an unhealthy obsession with diet, appearance, and body weight. A person dealing with eating disorders often resort to extreme measures to achieve the right body weight.

In India, Mental Health is seen as taboo, and not discussed openly. While prominent figures have recently started to speak up about their struggles with depression, anxiety, etc. There is one mental illness that is not well-known in the cultural zeitgeist, and this is eating disorders.

This general lack of understanding can be harmful and dangerous, as it can lead to neglect and abuse. Therefore it is, extremely important to raise awareness of eating disorders. We would like to recommend Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson, as a guide to understanding the inner mind of a person battling an eating disorder.

In this piece, we will discuss some signs and dangers of eating disorders, and at the end of the article, we will list five major figures who have battled with eating disorders and have become successful individuals in their lives. A Change in Eating Patterns

As mentioned before, a person with eating disorders has an unhealthy obsession with their weight and appearance. They often cut food into extremely tiny pieces, and avoid meals. Sometimes they may even experience disgust or guilt after eating a meal.

2. Obsession with Body and Weight

Oftentimes, an individual going through anorexia would often count the number of calories they consume, in order to maintain their weight. This can lead them to go down a dangerous path. Cursing themselves for failing to meet their own set standards is quite common among people with eating disorders. It can reach unprecedented levels, where they might harm themselves or even commit suicide.

2. Richa Chadha

The ‘Fukrey’ actress famously said that she struggles with Bulimia. In an interview with NDTV’s Barkha Dutt, Richa Chadha said that she would often feel guilty after having a meal. She also said that after a certain point “You stop eating roti, sabzi, dal. You start eating protein, good carbs, complex carbs, good fat, good cholesterol and everything becomes so mathematical.”

3. Eminem

In an interview with Men’s Journal, Eminem opened up about he was obsessed with burning calories. He stated that he would exercise until he got injured. He made it his point that he would burn up to 2,000 calories per day. Eminem resolved his issue by changing his workout routine.

4. Taylor Swift

As referenced in Taylor’s latest song ‘Anti-Hero’, Taylor Swift is one of the victims of eating disorders. In her documentary, Miss Americana, Swift explains that struggles with eating disorders caused her to “go into a real shame/hate spiral.” She went on to detail her illness, stating that she would often feel like she was about to pass out at the end or in the middle of the show. Leading down to a terrifying route, she would even exercise without intaking any food, to achieve her desired size double-zero. However, after being snubbed by the Grammys in 2018, Taylor decided to stop pleasing everyone and instead do what makes her happy.

5. Alexa Bliss

The world of sports entertainment is often induced with heavy octane live stunts. But to someone struggling with eating disorders, this can be a huge challenge. One person who knows about dealing with such a challenge is Alexa Bliss. The five-time champion explained how her weight shrunk to 80 lbs (36 kgs) when she was fifteen years old. Her heartbeat also dropped to 28 beats per minute. Her story gets scarier, as she revealed that she wasn’t allowed to sleep in the hospital, fearing that she would pass away. However, she has said that a strong support system has helped her overcome her demons.

Point Break (2015)

While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...

Without a doubt, this remake of Point Break is attempting to capitalize on nostalgia. Nothing about the original screamed “this won’t endure” but they’re remaking everything else, so why not? It also looks as though this 2015 film is trying to get some of that Fast & Furious money by turning its focus on the stunts and other “extreme” aspects of the story. This is a critical mistake which makes the film shallow, cold, and dull.

Johnny Utah (Luke Bracey) is a former motocross star and polyathlete (meaning he will master any sport from surfing to skydiving) training to become an FBI agent. He thinks he’s figured out the MO behind a string of peculiar crimes: a group of eco-warrior/extreme athletes are attempting a series of element-based challenges to reach enlightenment, a portion of which is dedicated to “giving back”, hence the crimes which end in ludicrous charitable acts and donations. When Johnny begins infiltrating the group, he befriends their leader, Bodhi (Edgar Ramirez). As they grow closer together, their bond threatens the entire investigation.

Strictly speaking, this is a retelling of the 1991 film. The characters share the same names and key plot points are there. In so many ways, however, this is like the Bizarro World version of it. Screenplay writer Kurt Wimmer simultaneously simplifies and overcomplicates the plot. Achieving the next level of meditation by dropping out of a plane after a high-altitude heist? It’s ludicrous even before you get into the details of the Ozaki 8 challenge/ritual. None of the extreme tasks are obvious things like “skydive out of a plane to conquer air” or "climb a volcano to understand fire". Instead it has to do with the direction you’re going, whether someone’s done it before and how dangerous the stunt is. The entire quest loses all credibility when we’re told the man who dreamt up this path of extreme wisdom died not even halfway through!

Though it may sound as though I’ve spoiled things by telling you that Bodhi is the mastermind behind the crimes Johnny Utah is investigating, I haven’t. The central mystery is so shallow you figure out everything this movie has in store minutes in. Even if you haven’t seen the original (as I had the first time I saw this). We don’t even get a single red herring to throw us off, so you’ll grow bored waiting for our hero to figure out what we did early on. Not helping are the bland characters. It’s as if no effort was made to differentiate anyone at all. Everyone has the same demeanour, the same kind of dialogue, and nearly identical tattoos. We don’t even get different ethnicities among the characters to help us figure out who’s who, which becomes impossible once the stunt sequences come in. You think at the very least the one woman with a speaking role, Samsara (Teresa Palmer), will get a little bit of a fleshing out by virtue of being the love interest but she gets maybe two scenes to herself and is so not in this movie you could’ve cut her out and changed nothing at all. How is it this movie lasts nearly two hours?

To be fair, Point Break does have one redeeming quality: the stunts. It's hard not to be impressed as characters race down mountaintops, dive out of planes, surf on waves, etc. They’re the kind of thing you’d never dream of doing so getting to see them shot this well is appealing. With that said, this picture suffers greatly on the small screen. When I saw the wing suit sequence in theatres, in 3D, it was mind-blowing. Not enough to warrant a recommendation or to make the movie memorable, but it still made me go "wow!" On my TV? Forget about it.

Say what you will about Keanu Reeves - who I think is good when he’s well cast - but he’s a manic overperformer compared to everyone in this movie. There’s no charm or excitement to be found in this remake of Point Break. It’s a film which struggles to justify its existence. There’s no way anyone will remember it down the line. (On DVD, April 26, 2019)

Summary: Peter Parker is your best friend. In fact he’s one of your only friends. So it’s needless to say things get a little complicated when you fall in love with him and he’s in love with another girl.

You never had many friends. It’s alway been that way, ever since you remembered. 

Being a Stark meant that you were constantly in danger, especially after your dad became Iron Man. So you were homeschooled. It was pretty easy, ever since the Avengers moved in, Bruce and Tony took turns teaching you everything you needed to know. So there was no need for you to go to school.

But you were lonely. Yes, you were surrounded by the team, but they were all so much older than you. Wanda and Pietro were the only ones closest to your age not only were they still way older than you, they hated your dad for a long time so there was a small tension there. 

You spent time with your dad, hell he was your best friend, but a girl can only spend so much time with her father. Bruce was too scared to hang out with you. Steve treated you like a toddler. Sam and Bucky were fun to be with but then Steve will join and then they all act as if you’re a baby. Natasha is great to go to for advice but she rarely had time to talk with you, Clint was a whole father. And Thor, he was hardly on earth. 

That's when Peter Parker came into your life. He was the first person on the team who was your age. You and he quickly became friends, bonding over your shared interests in Star Wars and being the youngest in the Avengers HQ. 

When you first met him, you were really shy. As said before, you rarely had the chance to talk to anyone your age. If you did, it was most likely the child of another business owner at some fancy party. So becoming friends with Peter was definitely an experience. You remember the day you two became friends.

**Flashback**

You really weren’t expecting to meet Peter. Hell, you didn’t even know that he was supposed to be coming over. So,when you walked into the common room, wearing someone else’s tee shirt and a bonnet, you were shocked to see a boy next to your dad staring at you.

“Oh, Y/n! I may have forgotten to mention I was showing Peter around...” Tony said as he noticed you were sort of unprepared for a visitor.

“ yeah that would have been good to know” you say glaring at your father.

“Well then, Peter this is my daughter Y/n, Y/n this is Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man”

“H-hi! It’s nice to meet you!” Peter stuttered as he put out his hand. You smiled shyly as you took it

“It’s nice to meet you too” you said quietly, taking your hand back and looking at the floor. An awkward silence fell upon you three. Then Tony cleared his throat

“I’m gonna ignore that little awkward thing. Y/n!” He looks at you with a gleam in his eye, “Maybe you can show the kid around, it would be nice if you knew someone your age.”

“DAD!” You shout, embarrassed he basically set you up on a play date, “ I talk people my own age!”

He scoffs and rolls his eyes, “ Talking to those Gothamites during galas doesn’t count.”

“We follow each other on Instagram!”

“Wow, that’s the pinnacle of friendship.” Tony replied sarcastically, “ show the kid around.” 

You sigh as you turn to Peter, who was standing a few feet away awkwardly listening to you and your dad squabble.

“ Alright web head, let’s go”

He looks at Tony, slightly fearful. But Tony only smiles and says, “ Aw a nickname, see Peter she does like you.” Then walks away, leaving you two alone.

Flashback ends ****

Who knew that from that awkward interaction, a beautiful friendship would blossom??

From then on, you and Peter were practically attached by the hip. Every day after patrol, Peter would come over and hang out with you. Whether you’re watching movies, playing video games, or cranking the other Avengers, you and Peter could always be found together. He truly became your one best friend.

Until it became more.

The light hugs he’d give you when he first saw you started to linger, you both sat closer when you were watching movies (practically cuddling), he’d fall asleep on you lap when you stroked his hair.

All this but you both still held on to the notion that you just friends. Well, Peter did.

You were really unexperienced when it came to stuff like this.  This was the first time you ever had a friend, let alone have a crush. It was easier for you to ignore these intimate moments and cling onto the idea that it was just platonic. And you did, up until your dad had the wonderful idea to invite Peters class on a tour of the Tower.

At first you really didn’t have an opinion.

If anything, you were indifferent to the idea of your home being swarmed by teenagers. It didn’t help that Steve convinced your dad that you should be present during the tour. Claiming that “ it’d be good for her to meet more kids her age instead of just Peter.”

Honestly, you had other friends! They just lived in a different city and you rarely talked.

But there you were, standing beside Bucky as your dad went on about the compound and all the nerdy science stuff. You weren’t really paying attention, you had some AirPods in. It wasn’t until Bucky nudged you when you realized that your dad was calling you.

“ Come on up kiddo” he said giving you that Dad™️ stare.

You grin at him, then glare at Bucky as he snickers into his shoulder. You make your way up to where your dad is in the front of the crowd.

“ What am I supposed to be doing” you whisper to your dad. He rolls his eyes and whispers back “ Introduction and answer some questions”

You gulp, you were always good at public speaking . You were a Stark, of course you were. But introducing yourself to your fathers business partners and introducing yourself to your peers was two different things. You eyed the crowd trying to find Peter, you found him next to a chubby boy with an awestruck look on his face and a rather pretty girl who looked like she’d rather be anywhere but here. When you made eye contact with him, he smiled and threw you a thumbs up.

That simple gesture give you all the confidence you needed to introduce yourself

“ Hi, I’m Y/n Stark. I’m seventeen years old and I live here with my dad and the team. Obviously” you say, a slight smile on your face. “ I guess I have to answer questions. But I’m not sure cause I wasn’t paying attention”

The group laughs and a few hands raise, the questions are basic “ what’s it like living with avengers?” “ Where do you go to school?” “Are you single?” Etc etc. After answering, the rest of the team introduced themselves and then split the kids into groups for the tour. You looked for the group Peter was in, finally finding him in Sam and Bucky group. You sneak away from your fathers side and skip up behind the duo. You watch them bicker over where to take their group.

“ What about the gym ?” You say, startling the two men.

“Jesus!!” “Shit!!”

You laugh, watching them dramatically clench their chest. “You’d think as highly trained soldiers you’d be more aware of your surroundings.”

“ haha.” Sam says, “ just for that you’re not allowed to be part of our group”

“ I’ll just find a way to sneak in.” You say with a grin. They roll their eyes and lead the group to the gym. You stay in place as you wait for Peter to walk by. As he does you saddle up next to him.

“Hey web slinger” you whisper in his ear. He jumps at your voice.

“Y/n??!” His voice cracks, “ don’t do that!!”

“Aw come on Pete!” You laugh, “ don’t be such a wuss!”

Then the boy next to him turns, The awestruck look back on his face

“ Your..your Y/n Stark ” he says wide eyed. You smile shyly as you turn to him, remembering where you were.

“ hi, you must be Ned. Peters told me a lot about you” you say in a low voice.

“ Peter talks to you about me” he says in a surprised voice.

“Yeah! It’s really awesome to finally meet you.” 

“ Are you two coming?” Another voice chimes in. You turn to see the pretty girl with a bored expression.

“ Oh, hey” she says noticing you, “ I’m Michelle Jones, but just call me MJ”

“Y/n Stark” you say with a smile. She nods at you and then turns to Peter and Ned.

“ Come on you two, Liz is asking where you are”

“ Liz is asking about me??” Peter says, his face turning red, “ what did she say? Did she mention my name?!”

You watch him in confusion. He never acted like this except when Natasha called him handsome that one time. Then again, if Natasha called you pretty you’d freak out as well.

MJ rolls her eyes and ignored his questions, “ So you live here?” She asks you. Her question startled you as you weren’t expecting to be talked to.

“ Ye-yeah. I’ve been with my dad since I was about two.” You stuttered.

“That’s cool!! What about your mom?” Ned asks.

You smile sadly, “ I don’t know, she’s not around much.” Sensing your sadness, Peter wrapped in arm around you.

“ Cone on guys, quit it with the questions.”

Ned looks at you apologetic and Mj looks away. Then a pretty girl walks up to your group.

“ There you are. Come on you guys, you’re not supposed to split from the group.”

Peter pulls his arm back immediately at her presence. His eyes glaze over as he looks at her with a gaze you can only describe as dreamy.

“He-hey!! Sorry Liz, guess we lost track of time..heh” He rubs the back of his neck as his face turns red. His body tensed up in anxiety but at the same time is slouched. He has a goofy grin that you’ve never ever seen before.

Seeing Peter act so differently around this girl made you feel weird. Your hands were sweaty and your chest filled with anxiety. You felt cold and hit at the same time. There was a sick feeling in your stomach.

“Are you okay?” Mj asked looking at you in concerned.

You were frowning. Ned looked at you with wide eyes “ I’m sorry about mentioning your mom! I really didn’t mean to upset you.” 

You turn to him and smile at his concern for you. “ Don’t worry about it, you didn’t know” you frown again looking at Peter walking with Liz, “ Soo, who’s that?”

“ Oh that’s Liz Allen. Peters been in love with her since like freshman year”

Your heart drops and that sick feelings return. “ Oh really?”

“Yeah, I am surprised you don’t know who that is Peter hasn’t stopped yapping about hersince freshman year.” MJ says rolling her eyes.

“ Peters never mentioned her. Just Ned and you.” You say. MJ hums at that.

“ Thats funny, Peter doesn’t talk about his internship too much. we didn’t even know you two were friends until today.”

Well, if you weren’t hurt before, now you were in absolute pain.

“Oh..really?” You ask, “ it’s probably because I hardly leave the HQ. Peter is the first friend I have here in the city.” You tried to reason, but you didn’t even convince yourself.

Ned and MJ look at you in shock, but before they can say anything Peter comes back to the group.

“ Hey guys! Liz just agreed to hangout with us this weekend!” He says to Ned and MJ, his back turned to you. You’re shocked because you were supposed to go shopping with Peter this weekend.

“ Since when were we hanging out this weekend??”  Mj asks confused with the sudden plans.

“ well...Liz was supposed to go shopping with her friends but they have plans this weekend, and she was really bummed out about it so I said she can hang out with us...” he says quickly.

“ but I thought we were going shopping..” you finally say. Peter jumps and looks at you as if he’s realizing you were there.

“ Oh crap! Y/n I’m so sorry! I completely got caught up with everything!” He apologizes, “ Hey! Why don’t you come with us! You can get to know Ned and MJ some more, and Mr. Stark and Cap will get off your back about talking to people your age”

“ That sound fun!” Ned exclaimed

“ I guess I have nothing better to do” Mj says

You want to decline at first, upset that he forgot about the plans he made with you and you didn’t really want to see him flirt with Liz. But he was looking at you with those brown eyes you love, so you couldn’t say no.

“ sure, I can’t wait..”

You smile weakly. Already dreading the upcoming weekend.

Y/N’s POV

I’m grinning at my reflection in the mirror as I put on a pair of earrings. My face is already touched-up with a little make-up and my hair is looking on point. I can almost see my own reflection in the shine of excitement in my eyes. I take in my upper body via a quick once-over in the full body mirror opposite me, and I finally relax my muscles that I didn’t ever realize I was tensing.

“OK, now I’m ready.“ I say as a form of encouragement as I reach behind me for my phone that’s sitting on my bed.

You might be wondering where I’m going? Who I’m going with? What’s the occasion behind this many preparations and pampering?

The answer: Nowhere. No one. Nothing. I’m literally not even going to leave my house.

It might seem ridiculous to someone else, but to me, to my hypnotized mind, it’s perfectly reasonable to be getting so amped up over a FaceTime call. Yeah, you heard me correctly - a FaceTime call. 

Well, you see, this isn’t the first time we FaceTime, but it will be the first time we’ll see each other’s faces. I wanted to level the field so I didn’t let him on to what I look like, where exactly I live, etc. Basically, he only knows my name, which I am still prepared to call unfair, considering I don’t know his real name. 

A brief backstory to my first ever real interaction with Corpse: I was introduced to him by my friends. They are the ones I always turned to with all the scary shit happening in my life. Often times they didn’t know weather to comfort me or laugh at my curse. My friends suggested I start sharing it to a youtuber named Corpse Husband. You see, I love YouTube narrators and I’ve always been a fan of Mr. Nightmare and I, to be perfectly honest, always kept the idea of sending him my stories in the back of my mind. Nevertheless, I bit the bullet and checked out on of this Corpse Husband guy’s videos. And then another. And another. And before I knew it I was having a marathon after which I was too paranoid to get online, walk home alone at night, leave my curtains open etc. It wasn’t all thanks to the stories themselves. A lot of the fear factor these stories strike with should be credited to the way they are read. Let me tell you, this guy had it all figured out with the reading. Not sending him my stories would just be wrong. So I did, I sent him my first ever creepy encounter which was with a stalker from my high school and it took me only two days to forget about it. It only crossed my mind when my friends blew my phone up, demanding I watched Corpse’s new video. I kid you not, I got more scared by the story when he read it than when I lived it. That’s what settled it for me - I decided to send him each and every story.

And then one day, out of the blue, my life changed for the better in more ways than one. It got turned completely upside down, like a rollercoaster, and I just had to hold on and enjoy the ride, embrace the adrenaline rush and excitement, knowing full well that I chose to get on and there’s no way I can get off halfway through. 

I’m being too metaphorical. He sent me an email. He freaking reached out to me. And I was posed with a rough choice. Took me a minute, but I chose to reply to him, I chose to trust him, and I couldn’t just leave him on read one day simply cause I chickened out. Yes, I’m unlucky and these things don’t happen to unlucky people. I mean, they do, but they are nightmares disguised as a dream come true. I’ve lived all my life cautiously: if something sounds too good to be true it’s either not as good as marketed or not true at all. If it’s dark and late and there are no people around, FaceTime someone. If your Uber driver’s sketchy, cancel the ride. I take all the precautions and I still find myself in the worst situations. Or at least...

My thoughts are interrupted by the ringing of my phone. A simple ringtone I hear every time he calls me. A simple sound that causes me butterflies when I hear it and ultimate devastation if the caller ID doesn’t read the name I want. It always gets me excited, probably more than it should. This time is different, however. It’s scary almost. I’m nervous, anxious, scared, hesitant - all things I never feel when I’m about to answer his call. 

With shaky hands I pick up the call and find myself looking at the most beautiful person I’ve ever met. Now I know why I would have never initiated this meeting, because I know what color my face is right now. I know my voice has let me down before I even attempt to speak. I know I look like a mess. I know my obvious crush is showing.

Corpse initiated this meeting. He said he was getting too curious and he wanted one of his best friends to see him and for him to finally see her. It’s been about seven months since we first started texting and I haven’t let out a single peep about it to a single soul. It’s just between him and I. We are each other’s safe space away from the rest of the world.

“Thought you weren’t gonna pick up for a second there.“ His voice is not as confident as other times when we’ve talked. His trying to hide his own nervousness and all I wanna do is hug him and tell him he doesn’t have to. I kept telling him over and over again that we don’t have to do this if he’s not sure that he actually wants it. I even offered to show him what I look like, not expecting to see him in return but he declined, saying it was now his turn to even the field.

“I was in another room.“ I manage to say, my voice only shaking a little.

We spend a few moments just looking at each other. Admiring one another. For someone who prefers digital interaction, I am surprised to realize I wish he was actually standing in front of. I wish I could hug him. A long hug of comfort, mutual understanding and hidden feelings.

He lets out a short laugh, shaking his head which causes a few strands of hair to fall over his eyepatch, “I’m sorry...It’s just-...Fuck I’m stumbling.” He chuckles nervously, “I just...can’t believe you are real. You are a real person. And the most beautiful person I’ve seen. That’s corny, isn’t it.” He looks away from the screen, his face now a shade of red. “But I mean it. I’m embracing my corniness. You are beautiful, Y/N. Not that I’m flexing or anything, but I’m lucky to have met you.”

I laugh, feeling my eyes stinging from the tears that have suddenly formed. I don’t want to let them fall, but I don’t have much say in that. “Well, mister Corpse, I can’t begin to compare. I mean...that hair! I still cannot believe it’s you. You are not just a deep voice in my mind. You are....you are...”

“Everything you imagined and more?“ he jokes, making my whole body heat up. “I told you you could trust. I mean, if the hair doesn’t confirm I’m who I say I am, I don’t know what will.”

“Actually, I never tried to imagine what you looked like. I knew those visions...I knew they didn’t matter. Faces don’t matter to us, Corpse. I think you realize that.“

And just like that, all I’ve been keeping hidden is pouring out. I don’t try to stop it - you can’t stop a hurricane with bare hands.

“I never needed a face to imagine us. I always saw as talking on the phone, playing Among Us. Reading scary stories to each other on Discord. I never needed a face to imagine your company. To imagine what we could be...“ I trail off, letting the first tear slip down my cheek.

The most sincere look appears in his eyes, “Fuck, I wish I could hold your hand right now. Never mind, I wish I could hug you, Y/N. Hug you and not let go for a long time.”

I laugh halfheartedly, my chest burning from the intensity of this moment’s intimacy, “I can always tell you where I live.” I’m only half-joking. I really want to see him in real life, not just through a screen, but even this call is out of his comfort zone, let alone a physical meet up.

He surprises me yet again, “Saturday. I’ll bring the take out, you pick the movie.” he says with a smile that is literally saying ‘you didn’t see that coming, did you?’

“How are you sure I don’t live in a different state, or a different continent all together?“ I tease, making an attempt to put my composure back together.

He smirks, “I pay way more attention to your stories than you’d think.” I laugh, shaking my head as a pointless method of fighting the pesky tears that he has 100% noticed by this point. “By the way, just because we’re....” he thinks for a second, “in a weird zone between friendship and...something more, doesn’t mean you have to stop sending me stories. I absolutely love reading them for my audience. They love em too.”

I just realized I am yet to tell him the crazy miracle that has happened. “Well, the thing is...I don’t have any.” His eyebrows shoot up in shock which makes me laugh, “Yeah, I know, it’s crazy. Since the day we started talking I have not experienced a single scary thing. Deadass. I swear on my life.”

If I wasn’t so head over heels for this man already, the baffled expression on his face would definitely send me falling for him. He’s just that adorable. “Wow.”

“I know right.“ I nod, “Seems to me you have enough luck to share with me.“

His eyes light up at that comment, showing just how meaning full it is to him.

“You’re my lucky charm, Corpse.“

This man will do anything with your kid, they want to go to the park, sure he'll have to keep an eye on them. They want to see the movies, sure has to be below pg or he will never hear the end of it from the nightmares his kids have. Want to go to the zoo, sure he just needs to make sure they don't go into the exhibit.

He will play dress up and tea time with them. He will put on a dress and have them do his makeup just so he can go to tea time, and might start some beef with Mr teddy for stealing his cupcakes, but he will do it proudly.

He will try to do their hair in the morning for school, again he is not the best at it and will probably give them crooked pigtails, he's trying he really is.

Can't cook for shit, I'm sorry if you think he could cook please take a look at all the pizza box stored around his shop. Like he will take cooking lessons or watch cooking shows but dear god how do you set fire to milk.

He will always be there for his kid to vent even if he doesn't know how to respond he will sit and let them rant about stuff, also trying to cheer them up because he doesn't want to see them sad

If they brought their homework to him he would be confused he can barely pay his bills i don't think he knows how to do math, but drama he will rock that stuff his acting skills are on point even if it's cheesy

Will waste all his money on the kid, toys, clothes, video games, you name it he will buy it and give to the kid

Remember how I said not to leave your kid alone with Dante yeah, he may or may noteave his weapons/devilarms around for the kids to grab them, like halfway of Dante walking into the main room and he sees ebony in his kids mouth he tricksters all the way to them and quickly grab ebony before anything bad happens, but the kid will start crying and he has to find something for them to mess with or he'll get a headache

He accidently devil triggered in front of his kid now depending on which one he get two responses and he's expecting screaming for both, but if its regular dt like humanish looking one, "woah, dad grew scales and wings, are you a lizard king?" Now its his Sin Dt he would get "Oo, daddys a gaint dragon" for both case they will proceed to touch his scales? And will be all over him trying to climb him to the point he literally has to switch out of dt so they don't get hurt. Also he's a heat source for winter if the heating doesn't get paid for.

If his kid comes out as any of the lgbtq+ he would be supportive and loves them for who they are, I also see him being apart of it too.(I know a few people see him as asexual I do too, as well as bisexual)

Vergil

Look this guy probably has no clue what he's doing, even if we wish he could've taken care of Nero (at least I do) he didn't and now he has another kid to take care

Please help him hold the baby, he can't properly do it at all, he's just holding them by their chest and staring at them with confusion as the child cry, "why won't they stop screaming?"

He will get the hang of taking care of the kid, but please don't leave him alone with them for long he still has no clue what he's doing half the time

"Hey can I hang out with (insert name) at the mall?", "Do I know their mom?", "Uh, no", "Do I know their dad?", "No" Then that settles it, you can't go", "But-", "No buts, if I don't know their parents you can't go, and that's finale"

Can he cook, probably but he's been in hell for most of his life and doesn't know what he's doing half the time. Thank god for cooking shows and book he at least tries a learn how to cook, and doesn't burn anything unlike someone else

He will read the kids William Blake or other bed time stories before bed time, and will do activities where they try to make up poems he has to thank Nero for the idea

Speak of Nero, if Vergil has a mission he will leave his kids with him, he's not trusting Dante at all. Nero absolutely loves his step siblings even if their like a few years younger than him, they will either play with the other kids at the orphanages or play Nero which consist of Video games, sometimes sword fights if they beg long enough, or just talk about the stuff their dad and uncle does that are stupid and make fun of them for it.

Also that one dad to try and help with math homework but makes the kid cry because they don't understand the problem and he's yelling at them "What's 2 x 2?" Its traumatizing please someone tell him to cool it or his kid is going to have problems when it comes to yelling and math, also complains how he didn't learn it that way as a kid, I promise you he was homeschooled.

Now his kids can vent to him but he has no clue what to do nor have much good advice but he will give what he knows even if it's not the best.

This can go many ways, this man know his kid is getting bullied he will go down to the school with the Yamato and threaten someone's life, give his kid the sword for them to deal with it instead, or use some brain cells and deal with it like civil people and we hope he chooses the last one

Now he's a little careful with his devil trigger and doesn't want to scare his kids, but its by accident really and he expects screaming, just like Dante he gets two responses. Regular dt and I'm going off of 4 because I don't think he has one in dmc5, "Dad, why didn't you tell me/us your secretly a bug, don't worry well keep you away from shoes." If its Sin Dt, "Wow, your a dragon this whole time, does this mean I'm also a dragon, where do you keep your stashed gold?", I feel like for his regular dt they will sometimes smack him with a fyswatter and he has to turn out of his sin dt quickly because they want to mess with the fire coming out of him.

Nero

Out of Vergil and Dante, he's probably the one who knows more about taking care of kids since he grew up with them in an orphanage and takes care of them

I feel he's like a mix between Dante and Vergil, Fun dad but will put his foot down on somethings

If its a girl you bet he will go out to a store at whatever time it is and buy then pad/tampon when their monthly comes no questions asked he just knows. If its a dude he will give the talk, not just protection but what not to do, like when a girl tells him to stop he needs to stop, no advancing on or anything like that (I feel like the no advancing will also go for the girl)

Doesn't do favoritism, he hates that stuff since he technically dealt with it as a kid, if one kid ask why he loves the other more than them he will shut that down quickly and tell them he loves them equally and will move moons for them to both be happy

Best cook hands down, and will let his kids help if they want to but keeps them away from sharp objects. He will also take them out to dinner if he doesn't want to cook

He's decent with homework, and goes about it in a fun learning experience for the both of them, if they get an answer right they get a point that they can trade for something special later kne, if they get it wrong they will go over it again, but still get a point because no favoritism. He also help make a volcano, but also put a little extra pizzazz to it, and might have caused the whole kitchen to be a different color now.

His kids can vent to him, he will understand and try to help give advice for some issues, also takes them out of the house to do something they want to do to cheer them up

He will encourage his kids to follow what they want to do, play a sport? He will show up to every game, even if that means giving Dante his mission he will. A club? He will make sure they have everything they need for that club and be on time for it, be it art, book, yearbook, student council, etc. They want to do boy scout/girl scout, he will make sure he gets them a vest and help put pins on as well. He will be the number one supportive dad

As soon as his kid comes to him crying about how some other kid is bullying them he will be mad, he'll reassuring his kid that they are amazing first, then go to the school, if they don't do anything he will go straight to the parent and make sure that their kid doesn't mess with his anymore.

Will watch anime with them, if they agree that is don't want your dad into your stuff. But like he's absolutely into it, he seems like the person to like Bleach (this was not intentional I complete forgot that the voice actor for Nero also did Ichigo) or Cowboy Bebop. Maybe sailor moon but you won't hear him say it

Look he's really new to the devil trigger business, the only thing close he had was that ghost creature, so keeping this thing in check and not popping up randomly is hard. His kids reaction are, "You hair is longer, are you like rapunzel, oh wait you have wings and a crown your an angel. Oh can I braid your hair please," of course he will let them braide his hair he can't say no to a pouting face, they also will poke his wings to see if their real.

He will definitely support his kid if their aprat of the lgbtq+, will buy them flags, merch, you name it. He want his kid to feel safe and loved

Lady and Trish

Look I can't separate these two, when I first saw them I thought they were girlfriends, and I can't let that go. But these two would definitely be the fun and protective mom

So considering Trish and Lady are both females they definitely have to adopt of course, now Lady may not know if its half demon or full, but Trish does and she probably would help the kid when they get older since she knows about the demon body considering she has one, if its human Lady knows the most about the stuff going on when they get older and has I already planned out.

Now Lady has to be the protective mom because the shit happen with her dad she definitely doesn't want anything bad to happen to their kid, and Trish is like you do you kid if you get hurt you learn from it "its the demon way of raising" she says. Though she still will watch over them and make sure they don't get themselves severely hurt

They will buy their kid anything, and take them out shopping. It's like a spin the wheel of pay to see if they will pay for the stuff or put it under Dante's name for shits and giggles

Lady has to like keep her weapons locked up somewhere safe, unlike Dante, she's more careful with her weapons

If their kid is mad or something Trish will take them to some deserted area with some random stuff she found that isn't in use and have their kid throw it in the air so she can blow it up with her lighting, you know to blow steam off

Trish or Lady tell their kid the stupidest thing Dante has done or said, if they visit Dante please note one will scream if Dante says something about a soul, "I should have been the one to fill your dark soul with Light" and get the voice crack right too, he will look so embarrassed

Now Trish might not know anything about homework she'll support the best she can but Lady knows most of the stuff and will help.

Trish will tell their king everything about Hell, who's in charge, what creatures are there, the history of it all. Its a great learning experience until you tell them that the female demons kill the male after finishing mating

If they are out in public and some guy is hitting on their kid and their tell him no, protective mom mode is on. Mostly Lady has to stop Trish from frying thr guy, but Lady will give the man a price of her mind saying if he tries to do this shit again with her kid he will be going home with a foot straight up his ass. So now no man tries to hit on her

Definitely let the kids go venting to them, they give the best cuddled, some good advice, and shopping if they say someone's bullying them they will see that the parent deals with their kid.

They knew their kid was apart of lgbtq+, of course their supportive of who they are, they are dating of course. They will take them to a pride march in June

Kyrie

Look, LOOK, she is an amazing mom, so caring but also will put her foot down on somethings

Besides Nero she is a good cook and baker, while she doesn't want kids in the kitchen while she's cooking will will have them help with baking sweet

Reads bedtime stories and tucks her kids in and kiss goodnight (ugh my heart hurts I love this)

She will play video games with her kids mostly on the wii, she still the champion on Mario Kart and Just Dance no one has taken their spot yet, even Nero tries

Packs lunch for her kids and puts a note in it telling them that she loves them and hope they have the best day

She does worry about them from time to time when they go over a friends house, only because of what happened to her brother and then Nero she doesn't want anything to happen to her kids

Tells them not to climb the tree in their backyard, what does one of them do, they climb it and accidently falls down. She goes to them saying "You know I told you not to do it, and you did it anyways, you need to be more careful and listen to me. I'm not doing this because I'm being uptight I'm doing this for your safety I want you to be able to do the things you want in the future"

I feel like she's the same way with friends like Vergil, if she doesn't know the parents then you can't go out or over their house

She is really a good listener and help with advice, so venting to her is a really great idea also will ask about your feelings and how your doing someday, like she knows your in a sad mood

She also good with homework, I feel like she wanted to become a teacher as well as study for it, but instead stuck with taking care of orphans, so she probably homeschools her kids too

She also makes the kids clothes time to time, they have little sweaters or shirts that are soft and comfortable

She is so supportive of her kids if they come out lgbtq+, she doesn't care as long as their happy thats all that matters.

Nico

Now I love Nico amazing and pretty girl but don't leave a child with her, just like Dante it will be a disaster, but she probably would try to be a better parent than her since he technically wa this weird freaky man who experimented on demons or was weird.

Let's start with teaching the kid every swear word she knows and tells them to go up to Nero call him one of those names, she will hear her name being screamed and find an angry Nero going over to her as she burst into fits of laughter

Will be extra pair of arms when getting a tool they need for fixing the van, when Nero does understand what a Dohicky is

I think Nico can cook, its decent not bad or good, she did nearly burn the van down from trying to cook turkey.

She will try and cut back on smoking or at least not doing it when the kid is around because its bad for them, Nero scoffs because she nags him when he tells her to stop, but not her kids

Now her kids could bring homework to her, like he's good in math, engineering, and probably biology, but she'll act as if she never even seen the stuff in her life, because she wants to get her learn it and not her just giving them the answer. But if their kid is in a science fair I bet she will help make something totally child friendly(its not really), it kind of gets her and her kid ban from doing anymore science fairs.

She will teach then everything she knows about Demon, mostly the biology of it, and when Nero brings a demon part for his breakers, she goes in explain how she turns them into those.

Will tease her kids if they talk about their crush, she's a huge teaser so saying something about someone they really like or anything its a mistake, she will embarrass them in front of their crush, but she means well

If they try to change the channel of the radio she swats their hand saying the driver picks the music and the passenger has to sit and listen.

If she's busy with something she will let Nero and Kyrie babysit her kids, she trust them and the kids love Nero and Kyrie.

Tries to teach her kids how to drive when their of age to learn, but Nero and Kyrie won't let her considering how she drives and that the instructor is more legal to do it.

No but she will tease her kid a bit if they come out lgbtq+ too, of course she supportive I kind of see her being apart of lgbtq+ as well

i really enjoy looking at each persona characters element and trying to tie ut back to their characterization somehow, through symbolism or just traits they exhibit, so minato having agi skills on his Main tm persona always struck me as interesting when you look at how lowkey he is. ive got a ton of different interpretations on what is says about him: like how it could show minato being someone who, when he finally allows himself to, feels VERY deeply and fiercely. or how hes got the same kind of unshakeable stubbornness and throw all caution to the wind attitude when it comes to taking risks (hello movie!minato snarking some dudes ready for a fight), etc etc. theres a lot you could apply it to personality wise and its super interesting, but tonight i just had the abrupt realization that you could potentially connect it to the car crash that killed his parents with all the. the incident changing his world, changing HIM forever and leaving scars so deep it manifests in the pHYSICAL REPRESENTATION OF HIS SOUL HELLO??? wow. pain. thank u and goodnight, im so sorry </3

hey there anon!! thank you so much for dropping into the inbox with such an amazing concept. honestly? i'm with you there- it's super enthralling to do a deep dive into a character based on their main personas and whatnot! while i've always focused on personas from an intertextuality standpoint (in respects to mythology references), you provide such an interesting perspective with the main element of orpheus! and so many good brainworms at that.

when i first thought of headcanons related to minato and orpheus, my initial thoughts revolved around minato being a warm heater of sorts? but oh, anon. you've truly awoken something in my braincells. i think there's so much to minato's character that you can delve into? he's just SOOO good with how he develops throughout the story, and i think orpheus is a fantastic representation of that!
