Spotted this amazing blue-black tomato variety in a Polycrub tunnel on the island of Hoy, Orkney. Solanum lycopersicum 'Indigo Rose' (blue tomato) contains high levels of Anthocyanin and Lycopene - two key antioxidants.

Well, we finally got around to planting our asparagus bed this year. It’s been such a joy to watch it grow, it makes me smile every time I pop out to the Polycrub. One of the hardest things has been to resist the urge to pick it this year … from what I’ve researched, it’s best to leave it for a couple of years before harvesting. I’m being strong, but the temptation is real. 😬

Oh well … think I’m going to opt for a quiet Sunday afternoon and pull out some knitting. Hope you’re having a smashing weekend wherever you are … 👋

Moroccan mint

(Mentha spicata var. crispa)

There was a time, a few summers ago, that one couldn't order a mojito in this town without it being made with this mint. I've since been using Cuban (or Mojito) mint (Mentha x villosa) but Moroccan mint is a solid mint for teas and very prolific in our polytunnel.

Transplants of both varieties will be placed in the herb plot at the local community garden in the near future, but I need to scheme up some manner of containment system for them, less the whole town be swallowed up in mint...which sounds kinda cool at the surface...

The horticultural enterprise Transition Turriefield has been experimenting with growing edibles in Shetland’s wild and windy climate since 2008. They have lots of experience about creating growing conditions that allow the sustainable, organic production of vegetables and fruit in challenging conditions. In the tunnels the Cucurbita pepo (courgette) cultivars were cropping well. Thanks to Penny and Alan for a fascinating visit.

We thought we’d have a go at growing some oranges in Scotland.

So we popped a tree in our Polycrub … and fingers crossed, so far it’s doing great …

It’s covered in the most gorgeous orange blossoms and the smell is absolutely amazing.

If all goes well, we’ll be adding some lemon and lime trees next year …🤞😃

behold my adorable cucamelon children. and some guy who was living on them

#so glad to do some gardening today after two weeks of intense staring at screens #writing essays and presentations #felt very good to tend to some plants. and cleared out the polytunnel ready for winter planting! #ALSO we got given all this wool by a local farmer to use as an experiment in replacing mypex #im so excited about this. it looks so nice and is plastic-free! i really hope it works well. #moss.txt #maybe i should start a tag for the garden. #growing things #<- using this for now
