Loved the Hela episode of "What if?"!!! 😀 Shows how she could've been if Odin treated her right and I love she's so similar to her brother Loki. Even got her redemption and transformed into the Goddess of Life and Death in an all white outfit. Makes me wonder again if they actually are half-siblings as we don't know who Loki's birth mother is and in Norse mythology he is half Asgardian and half giant (as well as Hela being his daughter). Also loved Cate came back to voice her. Sad Loki and Thor weren't in this one but makes sense as they either weren't born yet or were babies. But Tom was listed on the press release from Marvel alongside Chris and Cate so he's either in 2.8 or the finale or both eps. Also hoping we'll see more of this Hela too and seemed to end that way.

Also being a LOTR/"Rings of Power" fan have to add I was getting Haladriel thoughts too as Cate played Galadriel and now her having this all white outfit and leading this team of heroes with her new powers, bonding with Wenwu from "Shang-Chi" on Earth/Midgard who has the 10 rings and actually becomes a hero here instead of a villain, knowing that Tolkien partly based Sauron off of Loki and a lot of LOTR is based off Norse mythology, and how Halbrand/Sauron told her he'd make her a queen. So I'm hoping we get more of this AU.

Black Panther and Shang Chi were both major successes. Almost everybody loved the first Wonder Woman. People are willing to watch diverse content. But maybe your LotR fanfiction just pissed off the fans because it was clear that the hateful shills in charge never once picked up the book and have nothing but disdain for the source material. Maybe your cringey girlboss superhero movie failed because it was lazy and terribly written.

Anyways, friendly reminder that "review bombing" is a myth created by bitter studio execs to excuse their failures.

Crazy Rich Asians: This movie was beautiful! I loved every single moment of it.

Moana: I feel like this one doesn’t need an explanation.

HP Prisoner of Azkaban: The BEST Harry Potter movie!

LoTR Return of the King: All of the LoTR movies are amazing, but this might be my favorite. My love for these movies led me to New Zealand where I visited with my mom for a month.

The Magnificent Seven: The cast was perfect!

Top Gun Maverick: Y’all know why.

Jurassic Park: Does not need an explanation either.

Marie Antoinette: Beautiful movie, I just loved the atmosphere of it!

Shang Chi: One of the best Marvel movies! So much fun.

Thinking fondly of Shang-Chi again so that time Kyle teaches Astrea hand-to-hand combat. Feral but affectionate (maybe).

“I’ll love him so much it’ll change the narrative” Astrea vs Zellard vs the end of the world.

“I’ll tell the whole world our story.” Yeah, ok… that’s nice and all, but Kyle’s a terrible storyteller.

“My niece thinks I just bum around the beach!” Kyle groans, entirely too dramatic. Astrea, the world’s worst best friend, just throws back her head and laughs.

The idiots, camping through the ages. That’s it that’s the fic.

Something something Sunbreak-themed, probably gonna strike Kyle down with a serious case of the Affliction and this is when you learn that Razewing has immunity.

Recently watched LOTR so idk… something medieval war-esque??? Let the raths lead a bomber platoon. Also I just want the monsties in their own suits of armor is that too much to ask for.

Little Mermaid AU for shits and giggles except it’s hate at first sight when Astrea makes the horrible mistake of letting Juice drag the idiot out of the ocean.

Okay, now that I'm back in civilization (and not living in an ant-ridden tent in the desert), I finally went to see Shang-Chi.

Thoughts:

For a Marvel origin story (which, let's be honest, they tend to be pretty middle-of-the-road), this was definitely in the upper echelon of first goes, at least in the "new" era of the MCU.

Let's also get this out of the way. Tony Leung could read the phone book (in English or Mandarin or whatever), and I would watch it. Holy shit, that man can act.

I loved the first act of this movie. I did have to wonder about the somewhat LOTR introduction of the ten rings, but I was willing to roll with it. Also, if the 10 Rings were that much into international politics, what's the over/under they rented out Bucky for a while? Because that would be an intriguing intersection.

I loved the San Fransisco scenes and missed that grounding in reality as the movie went on. The family dynamics were superb.

I appreciate that Marvel took risk of having about 40% of the dialogue in Mandarin. It really worked for the movie and the themes it was trying to express.

The opening fight scenes were amazing, especially the Tony Leung ones and the bus sequence. As the movie veered further into fantasy and CGI, the choreography lost some of its magic.

And that's really one of my major gripes about the film. We were given very little backstory as to this village and the mother's powers (beyond the Reader's Digest, "hey it's 10 minutes to closing at the museum, here's what I'll explain to you as an underpaid docent" explanation of the dragon stuff) and the fantasy element - especially the magic creatures - really took me out of what was going on.

My other gripe is this. I think Simu Liu has all the beats to be a Captain America-type character and a total hero but I could not believe for one second that he had this dark past as a teenaged assassin. I remember reading somewhere that Sebastian Stan got cast as Bucky because he showed some kind of inherent dark side (which totally played out in all the movies), and I don't know if it was the writing, editing, acting, or some combination thereof, but there was no way I was buying Shang-Chi as a troubled child-murderer. He's just too damn wholesome. They really could have gotten rid of that element of his backstory and kept most of the rest of it and it would have been fine and still a compelling family drama.

Now the sister? Oh hell yeah she's got that darkness. And it was funny, because as I was walking out of the theater, a little gaggle of 20-somethings was like, "Oh she was hot," upon seeing the credit scene. Can't disagree, I have to say.

The soundtrack was awesome. No complaints there.

Now, we didn't get all that much backstory on the rings and the post-credits made it clear they are saving something about them. But it might have been nice to get a little more explanation. Especially the whole living for a 1,000 years thing??? That feels kind of important.

Speaking of the post-credits. Bruce's arm was still busted, so this couldn't have taken place too far after the Blip and anti-Blip. Also loved having Carol Danvers in there, that was awesome.

Akwafina was hilarious. Loved her the entire way through.

The whole dragon sequence was bizarre. I get the cultural implications but as I said earlier, the further this movie got away from reality, the more it began to sag for me.

High points were high, but the low points were equally as low. Not sure if Marvel is set to nail fantasy at this point, but everything else was pretty fun and LET'S GO TONY LEUNG YES. 7.5/10.

Last Song? I was doing some DIY so I bunged on a youtube 80s compilation and now have You Spin Me Round by Dead or Alive earworming through my brain. Am old enough to remember how much they relentlessly plugged that track til it finally charted.

Last Series? Did I mention my attention span problems? I have abandonned so many Marvel series (is it me or are Marvel getting tedious?) but also The Expanse, which I love but requires actual concentration. Last thing I managed to finish was Loki and I'm not sure I feel good about the investment, it being one of about 3 shows I managed to watch through last year.

Last Movie? I only have a friend's Disneyplus rn and no TV so it was Shang-Chi before xmas with a friend (helps concentration). Also been rewatching LOTR movies since xmas day and am half way through ROTK. I am that ADHD.

Currently working on? Last minute edits to New Beginnings, my Awakenings sequel, and a long porny sequel to Couldn't Order a Pizza, but I also have 3 short fics in various states of unfinishedness, including one that is super sad.

Hot take but I don’t think “Hetero” couples in fiction are boring actually I just think they’re boring because we see the same m/f couples every single time.

Allow me to elaborate:

Usually every m/f couple we see in media consists of two conventionally attractive, young, skinny, allosexual, cishet, gender conforming, often white people. And you can always see the relationship coming a mile away.

Imagine how much better it would feel if you saw more of THESE kinds of m/f couples in media:

Fat characters involved in the relationship, and not made into a joke

Disabled characters involved in the relationship, and not made into a joke

A man happily in love with a gnc or masculine woman

A woman happily in love with a gnc or feminine man

Bisexual or pansexual men and women in love with the opposite sex (and bi for bi, Pan for Pan couples)

A man happily in love with a trans woman

A woman happily in love with a trans man

Trans for trans m/f couples

Asexual and gray-sexual people in romantic relationships and being respected in those relationships

Two middle aged people entering a new relationship, with the same attention and slow burn and tension as any young pairing (because middle aged and elder people have love lives too, and can fall in love again even if they’ve been married before!! See Kane/Abby in the 100.)
