10 Question Tag
A BIG HUGE thanks to @kaelensophie for tagging me.
Sorry it took me some time to post this.
The rules: answer the questions the individual who tagged you asked, then make up your own and tag as many others as you please :)
questions from @kaelensophie
1) If you could travel anywhere (in or out of the world) right now, where are you traveling? (pretend c*****v**** and money aren’t issues) - I love to reblog places I would like to visit, and this is like the ‘world world list’.  But at the moment I would love to visit Mykonos, Greece. This is just because I have finished a romance book few days ago and the description of the place was absolutely stunning, and not to mention that I have just started to learn Greek since few days ago lol.
Why did you start your blog? - As a language learner, I am always craving for resources which would help me accept the language in a natural way. Tumblr has users from all over the world so I can just message people in their language for help. Also you can find nice resources.
How ya doin’? - Covid19 has been affecting our lives so much, but fortunately I am enjoying my life at home, getting to read books and study as I work at home. All cool, thanks.
Are you a chocolate or vanilla person? - Definitely chocolate. No room for mercy on this one!
What’s your motivation for learning your tl(s)? -  Not sure what tl is but, for learning things, my main focus for learning would be making use of my abilities in the future when I run my own business. I am interested in establishing a business related to overseas trading (which I am already, a sales manager) I want to learn more languages, business managements etc. Working my way towards my dreams!
What’s the next language you would like to learn, if any? - I have a whole list on my Tumblr lmao. I have watched a document on Sicily and it really caught my eyes. I am already suffocating in the languages I am trying to learn (French, Spanish, Portuguese, Greek, Afrikaans wara wara) but if I can add on, I would definitely try Italian.
What’s your favorite song at the moment? Tooo many to choose from... One Direction songs. 5 Seconds of Summer. Meghan Trainor... But at the moment if I had to pick one, I will go with Kings & Queens by Ava Max. The lyrics are just so perfect.
Favorite food? - It may sound boring, but I LOVE hamburger and fries with coke. Nice fat juicy patty and cheese on the burger, and freshly fried fries. Yum.
Feelings on duolingo?Well... I don’t see it as a serious study material but it’s alright as a sub-study material. It does help me get a few new vocabs and I get to learn new topics once in a while. I also like how they have a lot of languages available.
What have you done to be proud of recently? Got rid of a extra-toxic boyfriend from my life. I have been crying at least 3 months while I went out with him for almost an year. Pathetic liar and stubborn fellow. After I got rid of him, I have found inner peace and I have started to get back on track with my learning.
Very proud and happy with myself.
-*-* -*-* -*-* -*-* -*-* -*-* -*-* -*-* -*-* -*-* -*-* -*-* -*-* -*-* -*-* -*-* -*-* -*-* -*-*
My questions:
1) What languages are you studying at the moment? 2) What’s your favourite movie and why? 3) What do you think is the best way to learn more than one language at a time? 4) Your favourite place on Earth. 5) What are your hobbies? 7) If you could be someone else for an year, who would you be? 8) What are your dreams? 9) Are you a beach or a mountain(forest) person? (or maybe deserts lol) 10) Your favourite book?
I am really not a communicative person on Tumblr so I will have to tag people who I think are really sweet and cool (high possibility we might not have talked ever ;p)
@langblr-xx . @ghoststudies . @sweetstudymine
Once again thank you @kaelensophie  for tagging me  I really do appreciate it and I have enjoyed answering your questions!

spanish writing exam tips
hi! i’m english and studying spanish at gcse currently, and would like to share tips on how to get 7/8s (A/A*) in the new exams *sigh*. considering i did a reading, listening, writing and translation back in the mock exams in november and i forgot there was a translation on one of the papers and didn’t do it, i managed to come out with a 7 (A). my listening brought me down higher than what i would’ve realistically got, which was a 8/9 (A*). so here are my tips for you!!! <3
[DISCLAIMER: by no means am i a teacher or anything, i’m just giving my advice on what to do. i’m talking about the higher paper in the spanish EDEXCEL gcse, but it could possibly apply to other exam boards and papers? i’m not too sure, and this doesn’t JUST apply to people wanting 7s+, even if you’re aiming for a 4/5 (C, high C/low B), these can still help you secure that. and if you take these tips out of context and put them into a different language (for german, french, italian etc), they might be somewhat useful]
-INCLUDE YOUR TENSES!!! they’re so important if you want to reach the high levels and it probably sounds obvious but as many as you can handle would be great! so past, present, future, conditional, subjunctive, imperfect, pluperfect, and more if you can. they’re the only ones that i tend to use and know how to formulate the tenses. there’s no good knowing what they do without knowing when and how to use them. i make quizzes on quizlet with the stem endings and match them up so i know what is what (flashcards also help a lot!)
-INTERESTING VOCAB is crucial!! personally i searched up the most unusual vocab in spanish and used that. my teacher (who marked it) was definitely shocked by these random words that obviously made sense but didn’t understand how i knew them, and that’s what you want-to surprise the examiner. they’re marking 200-300 of the same paper, make it interesting for them
-SENTENCE STRUCTURE! oh my god how important, if you want those top grades, sentence structure is important. ‘how the hell am i suppose to do that?!’ you ask, well it’s quite simple, for example: instead of saying ‘me gusta ir a la playa’ (i like to go to the beach), try saying ‘creo que la playa es fantástica’ (I think the beach is amazing). it makes you sound like you know what you’re doing
-DON’T REPEAT THE INTERESTING VOCAB!!! so obviously you’ll have to repeat a lot of words, but when you’re describing something, try not to call everything ‘divertido’ or ‘aburrido’ (fun/boring). find synonyms and when you do find those synonyms guess what? don’t repeat them either! it gets boring and will sound too monotonous. what i like to do is have about 3-4 words on each topic that’s unusual, i’ll learn them and when like the examiner (you know the guy/girl who stands at the front of the hall for about 10hrs lecturing you on turning off your phone?) is doing their 9283 minute speech, imma be writing down all the vocab on the front of the paper so i don’t forget it.
-ANSWER ALL THE BULLET POINTS!!! so when you open the paper, there will be a list of bullet points that you must include in your answer, otherwise you absolutely can’t expect to achieve your potential. you can add in all the grammar, vocab, sentence types you like, but without answering all that’s required of you, it’s not going to go down well.
-DO FREQUENT BUT OFTEN PRACTISE!!! what i mean by this is go on memrise, duolingo, all those lovely apps at your disposal. do 10-15 minutes a day to keep vocab fresh in your brain! it will also help for reading, listening, translating and speaking, when you have to have vocabulary knowledge, it will really make a difference. obviously it’s not convenient to do this every day for some of you and that’s okay, little and often, you know what’s best for yourself
-TRY TO BE AS ACCURATE AS YOU CAN!!!! so if you don’t know what something is in spanish, write what you DO know in spanish, or find a different way to say it. and don’t forget all the a, al, el, los, las, la, all those tiny articles mean something and please don’t forget them! check your spelling too!!
please please please don’t stress out if this is overwhelming for you, everyone is capable of certain grades and you can only do your best and if you can’t do all of this-don’t worry! these are just ideas and tips for those who are struggling on where they might be going wrong.
if you have any more tips, feel free to add them below!!

When I was eleven I stole my mom’s xanax Prescribed for anxiety Covered up as a solution for a pinched nerve No one told me the depth at which illness runs through my veins Too sensitive, too weak, too negative Anxious, depressed, paranoid– Terms never mentioned above a hushed whisper Sixth grade I swallowed pills that weren’t mine Surfed the internet on my iPod touch for different ways to deliver the chemicals When I was twelve I started snorting modafinal Lifted from my fathers medicine cabinet Too tired to handle with care Crushed between two spoons That year brought notebooks filled with masterpieces Written in languages I could not understand in the morning Thirteen brought study drugs My brothers adderall carrying me through an accelerated math program far beyond my capabilities The learning disabilities I was unaware of could not hold me down after a few blue lines At fourteen years old OxyContin was a lifeline to which I clung Surgery after surgery my mom was too busy recovering to manage her pills At school the vocab word of the week was insufflate Fifteen brought trauma as I led a pure life into my line of recreation She stole her mom’s pills too We took everything we could find Chasing a feeling she didn’t know and I couldn’t describe Sixteen brought weed and alcohol and Selling adderall in Spanish class To fund the steady stream of opioids and benzodiazepines I needed to keep my hands from shaking Heartbreak and new love came with seventeen A new love to share my passion with She blew lines of oxy off my ass on our first date And Rubbed the leftover powder on my gums Taught me to do blow off of CD’s in my driveway She carried a rolled-up dollar bill in her wallet Always ready for the next hit I loved her And she shattered me Eighteen ended the cycle and A new lover kept me high on marijuana High enough to let down my walls But not enough to stop the shaking Sharing bowls in the backseat of his car Blunt walks on the beach He hates when I tasted like cigarettes Antidepressants stimulants and downers With my name on them Rot on my nightstand As I try to make peace with an addiction recommended by a Psychiatrist

Cartagena
Cartagena is a colorful city that combines the culture of Colombia with the influence of the Caribbean/North America. It reminds me a lot of the beach towns in Mexico before they got overrun by western tourists/college spring breakers. Based on our flight (and the number of bachelor parties) I can only hope that Cartagena can keep its charm and stay true to its Colombian roots. See my other posts on Medellin, Salento and Tayrona National Park for more on Colombia!
Must do:
1. Bazurto market
This is number 1 – and the exact reason for this blog. If you go to Cartagena and only stay in the ‘walled city’ you will miss out on all of the unique culture/food/experiences Colombia has to offer. Sure, the market is dirty and unorganized… but it has thousands of stalls where you can literally buy anything. There are sections for household goods, clothes, fresh vegetables/produce/meat/fish, and even a food court (using this term liberally). We went on a Tuesday around noon and the market was packed. I can only imagine how crowded it must be in the morning when restaurant owners go there to pick up food for the day.
Contrary to the reviews, I believe the market is extremely safe. Everyone was friendly and eager to show off what they had in their stall. There are several companies that offer walking tours of the market – which might be a good option for those that don’t feel comfortable. Note, we speak very little Spanish (probably the level of a 3rd grader) and were able to communicate with the locals and found everything we needed.
While there, we had some fresh watermelon juice (around 20 cents US), an amazing spread of seafood (around 1 USD) and a few beers in the bar area. There was dancing, singing and the locals made us feel at home. No map needed, just follow the maze of paths and listen for the music. The only reason we ended up leaving is the power went out (which it does quite often in Cartagena). A great experience for those who want to see the real Colombia.

2. One (or two) day trip out to the islands
The beaches of Cartagena are not very nice. Although the city is beautiful, there are no ‘white sand’ beaches/turquoise lagoons within walking distance. For this experience, which is a ‘must’, I would suggest taking a boat out to one of the islands. There are several tour companies and several islands to choose from. Be very careful in which tour companies you go through/which islands you book. Many can be overcrowded or filled with bachelor parties, make several stops, or bring you to tourist traps. Ideally, with a large group you can rent your own private boat and create an itinerary yourself – free from all the hassle. However, with two people, we were stuck with the larger tour companies. Below is a quick assessment:
Rosario Islands: IslaBela: This was the day trip we went on. It cost 180,000 Pesos per person. It left around 9:00am and returned around 4pm. We chose this for a few reasons… a) It is a ‘private island’ which means there will be one boat of passengers that go to/from the island per day (no people hounding you on the beach for jewelry/food…). Our particular boat had around 30 people on it. b) Because it is part of a hotel, they provide you with lunch (I had the grilled fish) and will serve drinks to you on the beach. They also have activities (we went snorkeling – but they also had paddle boards, and kayaks. c) The island is far enough into the sea where you get ‘white sand’ and ‘turquoise water.’ I would highly recommend for a one day or two day excursion.
Playa Blanca: This was our other top choice – as it is accessible via shuttle bus and/or taxi. As it is not a private beach, there might be a larger crowd and you might get people trying to sell you things.
Isla de Tierra Bomba: Blue Apple: Similar to IslaBela, however does not have as nice of a beachfront. It does have the comforts of a 5 star resort (pool, beach staff, activities). Full disclosure – it is owned by my friend Portia.
When doing our planning, we used Cartagena Connections for research. They can also be used to book excursions: https://www.cartagenaconnections.com/ Would recommend checking them out before booking a trip (as mentioned before, some tours can be quite disappointing.

3. Explore the old city (day or night)
This probably seems obvious but there is a ton to do in the ‘walled city.’ Including walking along the wall! You do not need a tour guide and do not really need an agenda (as everything is super close).
My favorite: Holy Trinity Square. Go here any night of the week for street performers, street meat, and beers. There will be ton’s of people hanging out, drinking, socializing, and generally having a good time. If you want a cheap meal/great start to your night, I would suggest going here around 9pm, grabbing something from the cart (I got the ‘grande combo’) and either bring, or buy a few beers from the local vendors. Sit, listen to music, and hang in good company.

Some other highlights include: Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas – this is a bit of a walk, and you might want to take a taxi. It is about $10 to get in and you can walk up to the top for good views of the city. Probably only worth it if you like history. Garita del Baluarte San/Clock Tower Monument good for walking by and taking pictures. Café del Mar Ltda. Best view of the sunset – but touristy, crowded and expensive. Get there before 5pm if you want a seat along the water. Cafe Stepping Stone/ Café del Mural two cool coffee shops – the first is a run with a good mission – a way for local Colombians to improve their economic situation. The second is a cool coffee shop with a million different types of local Colombian coffee. El Arsenal: The Rum Box/Alquimico Bar – cool cocktail bars. Expensive but will make you a good Manhattan. Café Havana and the other bars on Calle 30 – late night bars, good to dance the night away – beware some have covers after certain hours. Caffé Lunático/ Basilica Pizzería good tapas and good pizza. Something different and both had good atmosphere and really good food. Café/ La Cevichería/ Carmen Cartagena the ‘famous’ places. Honestly wasn’t really impressed too much by either. The food was good, but expensive and the atmosphere was all tourists.

Las Bóvedas Market/ Apolo Park/Baluarte de Santa Catalina
All three of these are in the same corner of the city. I found the market to be nothing but stall after stall of tourist items. All shops had the same things and nothing was unique. The park felt rundown and there was no one taking care of it (it might be interesting if you had a good handle on Colombian leaders). And the Baluarte de Santa Catalina was similar to the other castle – just another stone structure. The views are nice from the top – and it looks to be a big plaza that might have events from time to time – but when we went nothing of interest was going on.
Other notes:
-No one in our group spoke good Spanish and we were able to get by. It helps to know the basics - some verbs/vocab words ('where is' 'do you have'...), but nothing beyond that. A lot of people will have a very basic knowledge of English and if all else fails, use google translate.
- Taxis are cheap and not once did I feel the driver was trying to rip us off. They are all over the city and I would highly recommend over Uber.
- I have heard from others that there are some nice ‘all inclusive’ resorts in the area. I did not go to any of these – and if you are staying at one, the advice on the ‘beach day’ might not be needed.
