Seeking Tanning Commission/Finishing Service
is anyone open with commissions for finishing a wet tanned pelt into a dry? I'm not going to mount this guy anytime soon (if ever? it was technically sold as ready for taxidermy but I have... doubts.) and it being a longtime wishlist pelt (red fo.x ki.t) I'm not comfortable enough with my current skill level to break it in properly/fully without damaging it on my own. that and I'd rather not risk my fibro flaring up before this class in a month, last time it took like 3 months to calm down enough to use my fingers 😬
(continental US only please)

Waaay back in 2nd grade my teacher had us write a book called "My Pet Dinosaur", describing what we would do if we could have any dinosaur as a pet. This being the early 90s and having freshly watched Jurassic Park, I decided to skip the T rexes and sauropods, wanting something that would fit in my house and wouldn't eat me. So, I got out my trusty 1987 "Dinosaurs!" Childcraft Annual to pick something more practical, and decided on Psittacosaurus.

^ the illustration in the 1987 book, versus this recent, much more accurate depiction by Bob Nicholls.
So, three decades later, I found the ever-talented @bookrat and their incredible paleo taxidermy art blog. I knew I wanted to commission them, so I decided to fulfill a childhood dream at the same time! I chose a model of a psittacosaurus hatchling because the 14 inch hatchling would take up far less space than a 4 foot long adult, and actually be in my budget. I asked for a green color because of the 1987 illustration above, but more accurate and less mock turtle, lol.
it came out gorgeous! I have my new "pet" here posing adorably with two of my actual-factual pets. Thank you again @bookrat for your beautiful work! I'll have to get a collar soon to take more pics :)
EDIT: This is blowing up, so make you're liking and reblogging @bookrat 's post too, and check out all their other art and dino models!

A tribute to two cherished individuals ~
I began gilding preserved animals in the early 1990s while earning my BFA at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design and they remain my favorite things to create. Out of all of them, this is my very favorite. This was a commission from 7 years ago but I have waited until now to post it because of the emotional nature of this piece and the meaning it has to its owner. The client originally commissioned it to memorialize her deceased black cat, named “Muse”. Then, only several months after having the sculpture in her possession, my client’s daughter died unexpectedly. As a result, this piece took on additional layers of meaning for her because she saw it also representing her child passing to the other side. I haven’t spoken with her since she relayed the tragic news to me, but I hope her memories have brought her comfort with the passage of time, and that this piece is among the things that evokes them.
TITLE: Musings of an Afterlife MATERIALS: Taxidermy kitten, gold leaf, vintage ormolu mirror with opaque black glass insert.
More of my work at www.Sarina-Brewer.com ~ The philosophical foundation of my work dictates no animal should die for the sake of art. Throughout the course of my career I have exclusively used humanely-sourced animals. Roadkill and natural deaths are my staples. Each sculpture is an hommage to the animal and a celebration of their enduring beauty in life and in death. Google me for more about the no-kill ethics platform I introduced and my role in its popularization.

General update but I'm feeling much better after the whole DogBlud situation. I'm taking the rest of the month to tie up some loose ends and recover, then I'm planning to get back to work on pet commissions in May.
I still need to move my equipment to the garage. There's not much I can do until I get all my processing tools set up. I believe we're going to end up demolishing the house and building a new place on the property. It'll just be more cost-effective in the long run. Covid just royally fucked everything up when it came to getting the renovations done and were at the point where there's structural damage in the kitchen. I'm gonna need to spend the next few months packing and moving/storing things at my dad's place.
Between three ER visits, my dad having a stroke, my sister finding out she had breast cancer, Lobo passing away, it's really just been a rough few years for me and my family. I feel awful being so far behind on stuff. I hate that there's this part of me still saying that I'm not doing enough or that I'm going to be upsetting my clients by getting so behind, but I know that I will get things done. I'm am not anywhere near overwhelmed as far as the work itself. I just haven't had the energy to dedicate to taxidermy along being in a dubious living situation. I do at least know that once I move my equipment I'll be able to work more consistently, it's mostly the "moving several hundred pounds of metal and dead animals 25 miles in a Kia" that's gonna be tiresome.

Mounted up a fox I’ve been working on for some time. It has a lot of bad slippage so I used a donor fox I keep just for parts to transplant. It’s not perfect but did the trick. The pose the client wanted definitely lenses itself to have this type of work done. Will be posting some Timelapse’s of this huge dog fox 🦊 #taxidermy #taxidermist #oddities #curios #wildlife #nature #fox #🦊 #taxidermyart #commission #naturalhistory #cute #fluffy #foxy #mammal #vultureculture #gothic #stuffed https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm9-MNOKrG8/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I finally made an updated ref for Shiv, my character in @apotheoseity's setting Learned Helplessness!
Shiv was stabbed with a cursed obsidian dagger as a teen, which turned their blood black and doomed them to a prophecy - that one day, he will be catastrophically betrayed by someone he loves. Driven to deep paranoia, Shiv is difficult to befriend, but if you put in the work to gain her trust, she's a loyal, dependable, and deeply loving person. In their periods of isolation, they find comfort and companionship in taxidermy artworks they create.
