(Summer Study Challenge) 8/22/2020: Imagine that you could fill a swimming pool with anything except water and swim in it. What would your pool be filled with?
This is giving me too many flashbacks from competitive swimming, so I’ll stay away from the pool if it’s cool with you. ;)
Nineteen credits and two honors seminars sure do hit you kinda fast, don’t they? I’ve started blocking out my days schedule wise and I’m loving it so far. It feels so much better than the pomodoro method for me. I’m usually allotting an hour and a half to each subject and an hour to do these posts should I have the time to do them. As you can see, I don’t post every day on here, and probably won’t. This semester is busy, busy!
The first two days of classes went pretty well, and my internship is off to a great start. I’m enjoying my classes so far, but I still have two more that haven’t met yet. Also catch me trying to learn Latin myself - the textbook went straight to verb conjugation and I respect that but I have no idea if I’m doing any of this right.
Hope you’re all doing well. Steady on!

@thebookstheartstheacademes just did an intro post, so I thought why not.
I really need to use this blog more, don’t I.
I’m Fyo or Percy or The Guy With [Usually] Purple Hair Who Knows A Lot About History
I’m now 26 (as of writing this, today was my birthday)
Midwest USA. My school is a regional campus of a larger well-known university and I get stupidly jealous of anyone who goes to a fancier school than mine lmao.
I have a BA in history and I ended up back at my old school working on finishing a BA in English, language concentration, because I had nothing better to do and needed to learn some stuff.
Next semester I’ll be taking college algebra, intro to literary theory, and Old English.
My main interests are the Middle Ages (favorite figures to talk/cry about/study are Richard II, Anne of Bohemia, Charles d’Orleans, Isabelle de Valois, Anne of Brittany, Margery Kempe, John Wycliffe), computers, and digital humanities. I want to help use computers to study history, and make research and learning more accessible to everyone.
I have massive problems with imposter syndrome and other forms of academia-induced self-loathing, so I try to find resources for helping myself and others with stuff like that.
I’m most interested in practical stuff, like study tips and research and writing resources and cutsy journals and notes scare me.
My main project is translating the Middle English poetry of Charles d’Orleans.
I’m currently trying to brush up on my math so I can at some point take the GRE.
I took German and was pretty good at it and I’m currently teaching myself French
So yeah that’s me. My main blog is @skeleton-richard.

21/2/2022: Oh, Jane Austen, we’re really in it now.
Hello again! It has been nearly two years since I’ve made an original post on here - time really flies. I found out on Friday that I got into Oxford University to pursue my Master’s degree in English Lit! I totally was expecting to get rejected, so this is a welcome surprise. We’ll find out which college soon, but for now I’m ecstatic. I also wrote a paper for my Jane Austen class which my professor was like... do you want to expand this for publication? So, overall, I think I’m doing alright!

(Summer Study Challenge) 8/17/2020: Favorite seasonal fruit to eat during summer?
Interesting question! I had to look up what was actually in season ahahaha - blackberries look like the most appealing thing on the list. I still do enjoy some blueberries from time to time - but sometimes they’re too sweet! The vegetables were actually sounding a lot better to me. I love carrots - one time when I was a baby, I ate so many carrots that my skin turned orange hehehe. (Don’t worry, I’m good now).
Finally got all my school supplies and I thought I would show you guys what I have! School starts on Thursday (8/20) at my university and I’m taking 19 credits - more than I’ve ever taken before in one semester hehehe. I also landed an internship on Sunday! I’ll be tutoring in First Year Comp - which I’m actually pretty nervous about. I’m not much older or more experienced than the students I’ll be tutoring, but I’m going to give it my all. I appreciate being thrown into the deep end. (Also look how pretty my Origins of the English Language textbook is).
Have a great start to the school year, everyone! Love you all!

(Summer Study Challenge) 8/13/2020: Favorite ice cream flavor?
Something with chocolate, and then chocolate candy on top of that! I can’t eat ice cream that often though because it hurts my stomach! Still nice once in a while though.
It’s been a little bit since I’ve posted on here! I’ve been busy (and not so busy) trying to prepare for the upcoming school year, and there’s so much that I still need to do. Classes start in a week and I’m not ready :’) I went to #TeachingintheWake on Wednesday (yesterday - what is time?) and it was everything this world needed and then some. (Seriously go watch it- it’s on YouTube now). I got a new backpack on Wednesday too! It actually fits my stuff! *Sigh of relief*
That said, I also have a thousand emails to respond to that I keep forgetting about, my shower won’t turn on (it’s entirely my fault though - I should have let someone else fix the scald guard), and I can’t access materials I need for my thesis, so... it’s always something :) (I’ve also got my family coming in tomorrow! I’m so excited to see them - I’m furiously trying to clean my apartment but I keep getting distracted hehehe).
🎶 : The Boys Are Back (from High School Musical 3 - this song is my entire aesthetic).

(Summer Study Challenge) 9/3/2020: How have you prepared to return to school/university?
I feel like I did as much as I could have done, but nothing is quite turning out how I had planned. Some things are better than I expected, some things are not as good. It’s the nature of every semester, but especially this one. I think it’s important right now to take things one day at a time, learn how to adapt, but don’t feel rushed or like you need to be performing 100% every single day. We will get through this together!
That said, boy... this semester has been hard. I ended up having to drop a class (which made me feel really bad at first, but it’s actually no big deal - I’m way ahead on credits anyway) because the work from my internship was just too much. Things are much more manageable now, but I am still very busy. I apologize for being somewhat inactive on this blog for the past few weeks. I see all of your lovely posts! I’m just incredibly busy and tumblr usually isn’t my #1 priority...
I’ve decided this semester to write down all of the funny things I hear my professors and friends say. I’m going to keep a list and revisit it when I feel down. You can catch one quote in the right photo from the Oxford online seminar I attended this week. I’m taking some wonderfully difficult classes this semester which just makes it incredibly fun. I’ve got an honors seminar called “Sex, Race, and Victorian Science” and it is so fun to be the only lit major in a room full of science majors. It’s like... my favorite place to be (also the Victorian period is so wacky and interesting...). I think my favorite class this semester has to be my radical pedagogy class. It’s three hours long at the end of a very long day, but I always feel refreshed coming out of it. (Also I’m taking a class on Hamlet and its Afterlives, and... shhh... but I hate Hamlet. It’s theatrical whiplash. There I said it hehehehehe fight me. Am I still doing an intense research project on it? Yes).
Steady on, everyone! I’m sending the best of vibes your way! Valete!

11/9/2020: Long time, no see!
Just a peak at what I’ve been up to lately. Recovering from surgery and illness but I think we’re good. Thank goodness 2020 is almost over. I’ve been trying to keep up with my bullet journal, which has been difficult, but I think it helps. I found some old GOT7 photocards and made use of them for tomorrow’s spread. Love you guys!

(Summer Study Challenge) 8/1/2020: Worst thing about the beach?
The sand! Hehehe... sometimes it’s nice, but not when it sticks to you! Also that feeling of when you’re trying to sleep at the hotel later that night but your body still feels like it’s out on the waves, like you’re bobbing up and down. Could do without those...
Made an incredibly cheeky run to B&N today - and I think I audibly said “Oh my God they have it” when I saw This is Shakespeare. This one’s been on my list for a while. I’ve been needing something to read before bed, so I think the Carroll or the More will do nicely. Those have also been on my list for a while! I added that Middle Ages book because I’ve been needing to get a refresher on my medieval history. Hopefully I’ll learn a few things when reading too!
Oh, yeah, it’s also August! Where did all that time go? We made it eight months in this wild year and I love you all.

(Summer Study Challenge) 7/31/2020: What do you like most about the beach?
There was a moment from James Graham’s play This House that summed it up so well, in such a haunting way, but it’s all I can think of whenever I go to the beach: (I can’t find the exact quote but it was something to the effect of) the sound of the waves is the sound of breathing. In and out. Inhale and exhale. It’s the sound of our own mortality. Being swept out to sea.
I think I feel this way particularly when I’m somewhere along the Pacific Ocean, looking out onto the blue, it feels a bit like I’m at the end of the earth. As eerie as that might sound, it’s actually one of my favorite feelings in the world.
Poetic feelings aside, I’ve decided to be a bit cheeky and pick up some dinner tonight because it’s Friday and I didn’t feel like cooking. I’ve also gotta finish writing this RPG campaign episode - my friend @somthingcleveridk introduced @punk-isnt-dead and me to Monster of the Week and after playing one episode, I decided that I wanted to try writing my own. It may be brilliant. It may be a disaster. We’ll see on Sunday, won’t we? Regardless of the result, it’s been a great way to get me back into the writing spirit. It involves piecing a lot of popular culture into something that makes coherent sense, which is actually a great way to write something, I’ve learned.
🎶 : “Battle! Steven Stone” - (from Pokémon Masters), I gotta get into the RPG spirit, don’t I? (also Steven is probably my favorite character in that universe now sheerly because of that new event that came out yesterday hehehe)

(Summer Study Challenge) 8/5/2020: Do you read a lot over the summer?
I don’t really! I think I get so tired of having to read for school that I forget what it’s like to read for pleasure, so I kinda... don’t. It’s definitely something that I need to work on for sure, especially as I eventually want to get into academia. That said, I do read a lot during the school year, so maybe it balances out? I’m not sure.
That said, I was reading some articles from some Victorian children’s periodicals the other day that I forgot to post, so I’m using these for my catch up post. I started working at my dining room table because it has infinitely more space than my desk - the lighting might not be the best for pictures though. It’s a compromise.
I did a project last semester on Prince Hal (Henry V) in Victorian children’s periodicals, but found that the results about Henry VI were also equally as interesting. Authors tend to revere both kings, for different reasons of course. Henry V is revered for his journey from plucky and mischievous boy to valiant king, while Henry VI seems to be valued for things that seem a bit more innate - his patience, his introspection, his dedication to long standing English institutions, such as Eton. It’s interesting because these two kings are often pitted against one another - one is good, the other is not (at least that’s a prevailing narrative - as they’re often judged by their ability to hold and lead government and not much else). I picked out a passage with some interesting language, as you can see in my notes. - I suppose the question is whether all these values can really live inside one boy (or child) or whether they are truly contradictory...
🎶 : Lully’s Persée - Act 3 slaps y’all (it starts around 1 hour into the video and it’s a baritone (the iconic Olivier Laquerre) as Medusa and it’s just... this is why I love Opera Atelier. The tenor who plays Mercury is Renaud in my header - that iconic picture from Atelier’s production of Armide - that’s him! Colin Ainsworth! I love him.)

17 Questions, 17 People!
Thank you so much to @lattesandlearning for tagging me in this! I apologize for taking this long to get back to you. This upcoming semester has been a lot to sort out.
Nickname: Spiel, Laurie, Kid, Maria (I’m also in my friend’s phone as “Shooketh” sksksks)
Zodiac: Taurus
Height: 5’3″
Hogwarts House: Slytherin
Last thing I googled: “team aqua admins” - I was trying to tag some Pokémon art on the queue for my main blog, and I’ve never played a Gen 3 game so I had to look up the admin names!
Song stuck in my head: “The Carioca” by Fred Astaire from Flying Down to Rio (1933).
Numbers of followers: 276 - thank you all! I know I’m not that active on here but I’m going to try to be more active this semester.
Amount of sleep: My sleep schedule is all kinds of messed up right now... smh
Lucky number: 18
Dream job: Playwright, screenwriter, and/or professor
Wearing: Sweatpants and an Oxford sweatshirt
Favorite song: Right now it’s “What’s Good” (or “Falling for U”) by Seventeen
Favorite instrument: I like playing flute but I would love to learn a richer, darker instrument; I know oboe isn’t that popular with the kids but have you heard an oboe when it sounds good? *it’s lovely*
Aesthetic: having a music taste that spans a good amount of genres, taking too many selfies, existing in public to intimidate men, nervous laughter, dark academia friend with anxiety, the one who projects their friend group onto fictional friend groups, reclusive, just put SNL Timothee Chalamet in their bullet journal (you know the sketch).
Favorite author: I don’t think I have one  - they all aggravate me right now hahah (I’m taking a little break from my major and taking a bunch of electives this semester because my brain can’t read anymore)
Favorite animal noise: When my dog gets vocal when he’s excited - sometimes he’ll just start barking and I’ve never had a dog who does that before!
Random: I hope that you all have a lovely 2021 - let’s focus on healing this year :)
Tagging: @lanaslaws, @thatprocrastinatingmedstudent, @laurenstudiess, @alittleacademe, @libraryofjessica, @focusgranger, @notations, @motivatedstingray, @scholarly-romance, @problematicprocrastinator, @forcebros, @babinicz, @suits-of-woe, @notyouraveragejulie, @kafkastan, @ticketybooser, @thelibraryiscool, and anyone else who wants to do it!
(I tagged some mutuals from my main blog @harry-leroy - just so you know, it’s me! Also I need to reach out to my studyblr mutuals so if I tagged you from studyblr - hello! Figured this tag game would fit either blog style :) If you’ve already been tagged or are having a real busy and stressful time like I am right now, no worries! This is just a bit of fun)

(Summer Study Challenge) 7/29/2020: Have you done or are you planning to do any activities (such as work experience, summer schools or watching lectures) other than normal work during the summer?
I don’t have any big plans in place for the rest of the summer - school starts back up again in three weeks from tomorrow, so until then I am trying to start implementing habits that are going to be helpful for me during the school year - things like making the bed every day, doing some yoga in the morning, making to-do lists, things like that.
Today I watched a lecture called “Building the Shakespeare Brand” by Emma Smith - which, in a lot of ways, was a refresher for my brain on a lot of the early modern theatre history, but it was also refreshing for my brain to take notes on a lecture again! The Medieval and Renaissance society at my school just came out with their official list of events for the fall today and it just got me even more excited for school to finally start back up again - even though it will be far from normal.
I was using the notebook I’ve designated for Shakespeare and other theatre related things to take notes for the lecture. I’ve got a rather plain way of taking notes, but that’s okay with me. I could never really do with highlighting or fancy lettering, but those of you who do are so cool and so valid.
Also, does anyone else write drafts of their essay paragraphs on scratch paper before actually typing them? I have to do it with nearly everything I write... it’s kind of fun to go back through and read the first drafts though.
🎶 : “O soave fanciulla” - Giacomo Puccini (from La Bohème), performed by Luciano Pavarotti and Mirella Freni (from my Favorite Love Duets playlist)

(Summer Study Challenge) 8/3/2020: Ultimate Summertime Song?
What is summer without a little Rock Lobster? My brother recently reintroduced me to that song and he doesn’t strike me as the type of person who would listen to that song, but here we are.
So my favorite opera ever - The Rake’s Progress - is up on the Glyndebourne YouTube channel this week, and I was just reminded why this is my favorite opera of all time. As much as I go off about Mozart’s Così Fan Tutte, The Rake’s Progress is truly an opera for the emotional thrill seeker. Every one of W.H. Auden’s words is rich and decadent and really brings these rather flat, parable type characters to life in a very profound way. (If that makes any sense?)
I finally figured out my schedule today too. Thank you so much to everyone who gave me some advice on that post. I settled on taking a 400 level English course from a professor I’ve had in the past and really liked! I’m taking two Honors seminars in this semester as is, so the graduate course might have been overdoing it. School is coming up very fast! I’m so excited to be posting more relevant content on here hehehe.
🎶 : “VS Ultra Recon Squad” - (from Pokémon Sun and Moon -aka I’m living in my childhood this summer apparently)
