You had only ever seen two athletes present during rehearsals. Once when Madeline (who at the time was playing Penny in your production of Hairspray) was dating a guy from the soccer team. The other was when the star of the basketball team had come in to give your choreographer pointers for the basketball scenes during High School Musical.

Until now.

You had run onstage part of the way through “Live Like This”, which wasn’t out of the ordinary since so much progress had been made on the costumes. You were still tying the ribbon on your pinafore as you jumped into the song, but when your eyes met a face in the usually empty auditorium, you faltered. You almost sang the wrong verse, but recovered quickly, continuing with the blocking. What felt like a moment later, the number was almost done and you were nearing the end of your counterpoint with Mae Tuck - played by Eleanor, of course. Who could be better for the part? You held out the last note, trying to stay in character despite all the distractions in the back of your mind. You had to talk to Eleanor when the director called for 10; she’d started telling you how Devi was being weird recently. Also, what the Hadestown was Paxton Hall-Yoshida doing chilling in the auditorium? You shoved all that away, focusing on staying in character until the director called for a break.

‘I want to go to the fair. I want to go so badly! I just need a change, need to get out of this house for a little while. I never do anything, so this can’t be asking for too much, right?’

You projected all that into your everything - face, voice, mannerisms, energy.

“Hold!”

Everyone froze.

The director wrote a few things on his paper, sighed, and underlined something several times.

“Okay, good job! I need to revise some of the blocking, then we’ll do notes, so take ten.” Your sudden nerves had definitely made you pitchy, you knew that would be one of your notes for sure.

A chorus of “Thank you ten”s erupted, and you immediately ran to Eleanor, telling the others good job as you passed.

You leaned in and started speaking to her, quietly.

“Okay you need to finish telling me about Devi, and that other news you’re being so cryptic about! Also, what’s up with Fierro over there?” you nodded towards Paxton hoping he wouldn’t see, and you noticed Fab is sitting near him. You realized they’re probably waiting for Eleanor and/or Devi. That must be it, he’s been hanging out with them lately, right? Eleanor gasped.

“You’re right! Paxton is such a Fierro!”

You cringed inwardly a little bit as her voice carried through the auditorium, mixing with the others. Your eyes darted over to him for a fraction of a second. Oh god. He was looking at you. Or in your general direction at least. Lena, the costumer, walked around the set gingerly, following you around and getting you out of your dress incredibly carefully as you and Eleanor walked off stage.

“No! Well, yes- but no. What’s he doing here? Jocks never come here during rehearsals. I saw Fab too, are you guys and Devi getting dinner or something?” You said, entering the auditorium, and stepping out of the dress. You grabbed sweatpants and a silky, floral kimono jacket from your bag to throw over your leotard and tights. She waved back at Fab before sitting down in the front. You both grabbed your fans and dramatically flicked them open in sync. Your wrists fluttered, cooling both of you off. A knowing, and slightly mischievous, look came on her face.

“Devi and Fab and I are. Paxton must be here for something… else.” she shrugged, nodding towards Paxton. You looked over again. He was staring at you. You did a double take and tried to hold back your smile.

“Wh- I do not know to what you are referring.”

“To what I am referring is the blush on his cheeks.”

You barely held back a nervous, bubbling laugh.

“He is not blushing! Why would he be blushing!”

“I don’t know,” She shrugged, “Just like how I don’t know that he’s been loitering in the halls outside the music room during your last three solo music rehearsals.”

You struggled for an answer. Before you could form one, you were interrupted.

“Okay, okay what is the best Lin Manuel Miranda musical? Because Kathryn thinks it’s Hamilton-”

“Duh!”

“-But I think it’s In the Heights! It’s an underrated jewel!” Jonah interjected, still wearing his Jesse Tuck hat.

You considered for a moment.

“I mean, they’re too different to compare. In the Heights has the same energy as Rent - showcasing what goes on in ordinary people’s lives, and how love ties us all together,” he nodded in agreement, “But Hamilton is on a way larger scale, almost Les Mis meets Fun Home vibes. But in terms of personal preference…” Eleanor scoffed at your answer, and Jonah went back to debate further with Kathryn.

“Anyway,” you turned back to Eleanor to ask her what the hell she meant by Paxton Hall-Yoshida was blushing. But before you could-

“Eleanor, we need you to try on your blue dress again,” Lena was already pulling her away, “I had the empire waist in the right place but half the pins fell out, and it’s just...” And she was whisked away before you could finish the thought. You just had time to help Holly get out her wig pins and drink some lemon water before notes. Eleanor still wasn’t back, so you made sure to write down hers for her. It was pretty standard; be quiet backstage, go over your lines, don’t touch props that aren’t yours, don’t eat in costume, and a couple blocking changes you made note of. After your end of rehearsal warm downs and huddle, everyone left relatively quickly. You ducked into the bathroom to freshen up a little. Sometimes it was hard coming down from such intense energy after rehearsal. You mentally ran through your to do list. You needed to get some more tea, write that essay when you got home, go over your notes- You gasped, cutting off your own train of thought. You ran out of the bathroom to look for Eleanor, still clutching her notes in hand.

Your voice still echoed in Paxton’s ears. He wished he had a whole album of you singing. Your voice made him want to ruin his spotify algorithm by listening to nothing else. You had looked at him a couple times, and his heart had almost stopped. He didn’t know eye contact could be so intense. It’s probably just cause you’re like, the only person in the audience. Where else is she supposed to look? He deflated a little. He heard his name and looked over to you and Eleanor talking together. Hopefully it was about him. Hopefully it was good. He checked his phone, trying to look busy. When he glanced up to see if you were looking, you were gone. He started to look around for you when he saw Eleanor waving at Fab, and sure enough, you were next to her. What he didn’t expect was you dropping your dress to the ground. Time slowed down (and his heart sped up) as you stretched a little, and pulled out sweatpants from your bag.

Wow.

You had on what looked like a bathing suit on underneath, and a few other people had done the same, but he knew that image would be in his memory, probably forever. His heart was beating in his ears and he knew he must be blushing.

“You okay, Paxton?” Fab asked, a seat or two away. Oh god, he didn’t want people asking why he blushed every time he looked at you! He muttered something about needing to make a call and headed for the doors. Don’t look back at her, don’t look back at her… His eyes involuntarily darted in your direction right before he left. You had on a flowy translucent jacket, your hair thrown back supermodel style as you fanned yourself to cool down. He needed to cool down too. Maybe a cold shower, a really cold shower.

You managed to find Eleanor just before she left. Two girls were with her, you had seen Fab once, and you’d heard a lot about Devi, but had never been introduced.

You gave Eleanor her notes, and she hugged you.

“You’re a lifesaver!”

“Of course, I-”

“Uh, who’s this?” you looked over, and the shorter girl - Devi, based on what you’d heard about her - was giving you a weird look. You introduced yourself.

“Nice to meet you. How do you know Eleanor?” said the taller girl - definitely Fab.

“Oh,” you smiled, “she’s my almost mother in law. And my arch rival,” you counted on your fingers, “my sister, my niece, my lover, my husband, and…” you trailed off, trying to think of the other dynamics your characters had had in past shows.

“Your co-conspirator.”

“Right,” you laughed. Devi and Fab looked at you two.

“We’re in the musical together.” you clarified. You were about to part ways when you called to Eleanor, “Hey, we’re still on for running lines tomorrow night?”

“Uh… Sounds good!” she walked away quickly, speaking to Devi and Fab in hushed tones. Something was definitely up. That was typical Eleanor Scheming behavior.

That night, you almost couldn’t sleep. This wasn’t the normal post rehearsal can’t sleep. In fact, Tuck Everlasting was the last thing on your mind as you readjusted your pillows and snuggled into your duvet. You stared at the neon blue stars projected and swirling on your ceiling. You sighed. Again. Your brain was a 24/7 livestream of Paxton Hall-Yoshida to relax/study to. You saw him again, his face in the dimly lit auditorium, Adonis in a sea of faded seats. If you hadn’t been sure before, you knew now that red was definitely his color. You rolled onto your side. Your heart picked up speed as a thought crossed your mind. You could almost see Paxton now, kneeling next to you, his fingertips brushing your cheek. The piano underscore to “Seventeen” ran through your mind. You could imagine him saying “Wait with me, we could share the world…” so vividly it almost hurt. He leaned in, and…

You let out a loud sigh and rolled over again. Your heart was fully saturated. That’s more than enough pining for tonight.

“Paxton!”

He was a little surprised when Eleanor just walked up to him at lunch the next day. Most people were too intimidated to approach him out of the blue.

“I have a plan.”

“Uh, I don’t know what you-”

“Cut the crap, I know you like her.”

His face blanched. Well, yeah of course he did. Who wouldn’t? He was going to ask Eleanor if there was something he could do to win you over, just not here, not now. Not where everyone could watch and jeer and rib him for it. Just like they were doing now.

“Woah, dude, who is it?” Trent asked. He fumbled for words. He couldn’t believe this was happening. He hadn’t kept his crush a secret because he was embarrased of you, he’d kept it a secret because his dumbass friends wouldn’t get you. Hell, he barely got you. You were so deep, and emotive, and artistic...

“Bro, if you like her as much as it seems like you do,” Trent continued, “you gotta win her over.” He was a little shocked at the agreement murmuring through his group of friends. He didn’t know how to respond. Trent turned to Eleanor.

“What’s the plan, drama mama?”

“First of all,” she said, an almost humorously dangerous look on her face, “never call me that again. Second,” she shoved some papers into Paxton’s hands, “meet me in the music room immediately after school.” She started back for her table. Trent looked back over to Paxton.

“You gotta do it, dude. We’ll cover for you at swim.”

The rest of his friends agreed. He was pleasantly surprised at how supportive they were being.

“Yeah, I guess... we’ve got a plan.”

The next day went by pretty smoothly. No rehearsal was scheduled since they were finishing construction for some of the sets, but everyone was instructed to do a couple read throughs of the script, focusing on scenes they’re still forgetting, to make sure everyone’s off book. You stopped by 7 Eleven to get a blue slurpee (for homework) and a couple coconut waters (for run throughs). You texted Eleanor on your way to the slurpee machine.

...Okay? That was definitely weird. You shook it off and headed for the counter to pay. You stopped half way there, and turned back to swap the mango for passionfruit.

Not long after you had finished your homework and tidied up your room a little, the doorbell rang. You exited the kitchen, drinks in hand, and opened the door. Your heart caught in your throat. Paxton Hall-Yoshida was standing outside. And you were pretty sure he looked nervous. You both just stood there for a second. No one breathed, no one spoke.

“Uh, hi, do you want to…” you backed up, motioning for him to come inside.

“Yeah, thanks,” he said, entering the doorway. Paxton motherfucking Hall-Yoshida was in your living room. You held out a hand to him.

“Coconut water?” he took the box, looked at the label, and smiled.

“Yeah, thanks,” he said again, this time a faint, yet unmistakable note of joy in his voice. He took a sip. He smiled.

“Passionfruit’s my favorite.” You silently thanked Eleanor, who you knew must have planned all this. Most of the evening was a blur, and you thanked god your family wasn’t home right now. You went upstairs, texted Eleanor asking what the actual fuck, made some surprisingly comfortable small talk, then filled him in on how to run lines.

“Do you think playing the soundtrack would help you… get into character?” he asked.

“I would probably just end up singing the whole thing,” You laughed and tried to ignore the butterflies in your chest. The main scene you struggled with was before “Seventeen”. It was harder to get into Winnie’s head because you had no romantic feelings for Jonah, and you always just made each other laugh. You had started with a few easier scenes of Winnie and Jesse, like the fair, and the dialogue before “Top of the World”.

“That was really good,” he said, and you felt the sincerity of his words.

“Thanks…” you smiled and took a sip of coconut water, hoping you weren’t blushing too hard.

“So what next?” he asked.

“Probably the scene before ‘Seventeen’,” you said, giving him the page and scene number, “it’s one of the hardest ones for me. I guess I just can’t connect to Jonah the way Winnie does.”

“Huh,” he said, skimming the page. When you looked up at him, he had something between a smile and a smirk playing at his lips. You made yourself look away before you got too distracted. You refused to think about the fact that you were sitting across from Paxton Hall-Yoshida on your bed, in your room, like you were… close with each other. His eyes skimmed the script, finding the dialogue. He glanced up at you and nodded, indicating he found his place. You began.

“I was so afraid you wouldn’t get away,” you said, jumping into character.

“I may be 102, but I can still outrun anyone,” a smile played at his lips. You smiled, then let your face fall.

“I’m so sorry, I-I tried to warn you-”

“No, no,” he interjected almost seamlessly, “It’s okay, it’s… refreshing having someone look after me who isn’t my mom.” His eyes flickered between your face and the page. You smiled with him for a second, then let distress cloud your face.

“Jesse… that man came by my house today. He heard the music box, he knows about you-”

“I know he knows…”

You continued on with the scene and he trailed off when he came to the sheet music for the song Seventeen. You took in a breath to start the dialogue in the middle of the song, but before you could…

“Six years from now you will turn seventeen,

Turn seventeen,

The same age as me,

Six years from now,

Go to the spring,

Go to the spring and drink…”

He was singing to you. He was looking at you and singing to you. His eyes only flickered down to the page to confirm the lyrics. He was nervous, you could tell. But through his hesitance, the emotion in his voice was sincere. Your heart was beating faster. You didn’t even notice your pulse was ringing in your ears, you were too focused on Paxton.

“I'll wait for you till you turn seventeen,

Turn seventeen,

The same age as me,

Six years from now,

Go to the spring,

Go to the spring and drink…” Your hand rose to cover your mouth. He hesitated, and you remembered your dialogue.

“Uh, wh-what if I… forget where the spring is?” He reached out and took your free hand in his. Your pulse was off the charts. “I’ll go get you some water. Just… remember to keep it somewhere safe. Somewhere no one will find it.” You got the feeling he wasn’t just talking about the water. You knew he had never really been in a serious relationship before, and it clicked suddenly - if he learned an entire song to duet with you, just how much he must like you. You exhaled a breathy laugh, unsure how to process the sudden euphoria you felt.

“You make the world sound so… exciting. I just want to drink the water right now!”

“Uh, no. You have to wait.” you both smiled, anticipating the upcoming joke.

“Why?” you ask, “What’s the difference?” You held your breath as he tried not to laugh through the delivery of the punchline.

“Believe me,” he rubbed his thumb over your hand, “there’s a difference.” You both chuckled, and he continued singing. You were so focused on him, so… touched that he would do all this for you.

“Winnie, wait with me,

And we could be married,

Winnie, wait with me,

And we'll share the world,

Winnie, you can stop time,

And live like this,

Forever…”

“I could live like this forever,” you echoed.

“Live like this...” you sang in tandem.

“What do you say, Winnie? Do you want to…” he broke character suddenly, and asked, his eyes boring into yours, “Do you want to go out some time?”

He could see the adorable smile blooming on your face, even from behind your hand. You nodded.

“Yes, I-I would love that,” and you began to sing the last line in the song, “Forever-”

But before you finished holding out the note, his lips were on yours. His mouth moved slowly, intentionally, against yours. You followed his lead, flustered. He leaned further forward, his palm caressing your cheek. It was everything you imagined it would be, and you had quite the imagination. Your head was angled up and your hands rested themselves on his back, one tracing little shapes. Your shoulders were pressed against each other and neither of you could think. He was so warm. He tasted like coconut and passion fruit, and a distant part of your mind silently thanked Eleanor again.

You really could live like this forever.

Do you have any opinions on kakizawa hayato? I'm trying to figure out if he's actually good or if I just like him because he's pretty. although I'm aware that vocally he is not the greatest, I was comparing his 2015 and 2017 light, and then 2020 frankenstein and I think he's improved a fair bit. Actually, if you have time I would love to hear your thoughts on the frankenstein musical as well if you've seen it. Thanks!! Frankenstein is...one of them that's been on my to-do list for a while (somewhere behind Mata Hari, somewhere after Don Juan). 2020, the year it was announced, I was abroad, doing my MA, which meant that just about every penny I had at the time was wrapped up in my (1) surviving in a foreign country during a pandemic and (2) getting back home. And Frankenstein and I...have a tense relationship, mainly due to what I know of the Korean production, but we'll get to that later!

Honestly, I refreshed myself on Kakizawa Hayato before answering, and I have to agree, I think he's become much more polished over the years. I ALWAYS thought that he was the better Light compared to Kenji Urai, even though, imo, both of them were pretty rough starting out, but I also kind of feel like...people have traditionally been very hard on the Japanese Lights because they weren't Hong Kwang Ho. And I LOVE Hong Kwang Ho, magnificent singer, solid actor. BUT. Not everyone sings like Hong Kwang Ho. It would be like me judging every single Japanese singer by Naoto Kaiho or Mitsuo Yoshihara's standard. There wouldn't be anyone LEFT if you did that, and it's not because everyone's BAD, it's that they're GOOD. A similar thing happened to Teppei Koike's L in the same production, even though, imo, he perfectly captured the essence of L. (And is possibly one of the most versatile musical actors that Toho's got.)

People judge Kakizawa's Light, primarily, due to one scene, Hurricane, which makes sense because it IS Light's signature song and, arguably, the signature song of the musical, but what they miss is that his Light (and Kenji's) is very audibly going through a mental breakdown, becoming stronger vocally at the end (and, again...I think that Kakizawa did this better, I especially noted how well he's handling those long notes at the end.) It reminds me a little of, of all all things, Lin Manuel Miranda's Alexander Hamilton, where...is he vocally perfect? No, but that doesn't have to be EVERYTHING (so long as you're not shattering my glasses...we're fine. Not to name names, but a certain Marie Antoinette from a certain production of 1789.) I’m also going to point out that his voice blends PERFECTLY with Teppei’s L’s. Teppei, in general, has something of a chameleon’s voice, blending easily with other people’s (see also: the phenomenal chemistry he had with Sayaka Kanda in 1789), but the two of them really did go well together, and Kakizawa matched him, imo, better that Kenji Urai did, not fighting with him, but blending, even when the characters are at odds.

I did look at some highlights of Frankenstein, just to make sure that I was judging him well, and I have to say, there were several moments that honestly made my jaw drop, especially during the "I am Frankenstein" number -- The...sort of hiss he give out when he's golding Henry's head and he says "Sa", the long note as he pulls the final lever. Likewise, I REALLY love the loud scream he gives over the monster's corpse (yes...I judge every Victor based on how well they cry), and THAT LONG NOTE, holy SHIT.

Now...Frankenstein. And my complicated relationship with this musical. Revolutionary in the world of Korean musicals, really showing off that Korea CAN produce a high budget musical on par with Broadway and, really, anywhere else in the world. Ambitious in scope, impressive staging. Gorgeous, gorgeous music -- "In Your Dream" in particular is one of my favorite musical songs of all time.

But...and you know there's gotta be a but.

The plot does kind of derail in the second act. The first act is pretty solid! It does a lot of things right, kind of following in Jekyll and Hyde's footsteps. If you stopped watching at JUST the first act, you could say that you watched the first part of a very solid gothic musical.

...and then. The Circus from Hell hits. Taking up a ton of time and making an already dark musical go even darker. You could say hello to the goblin sharks at this point, for how far into the Twilight Zone we are. To some extent, I DO understand that we need to see why the Monster becomes so twisted. We need to see his experiences with humanity. But...it's long, it's miserable, and it's uncomfortable, and it brings in a lot of new characters who are there purely to be as awful as possible or, in the case of Catherine, to show how miserable they are. The implied gang rape is one of those moments where I just had to sit back and go "Was that...really necessary?" I think that Toho was MORE tasteful about it than the Korean production (which is...eeeeeee), but I still feel like...it wasn't really necessary to the overall flow of the plot. You could easily have shown her getting severely beaten up for the same effect. I do think these things can be staged and done tastefully -- It actually really annoys me when people say that films like, say, The Last Duel shouldn't exist PURELY because they deal with rape, because I think it's an important subject that merits being handled sensitively. But...this is not what I would consider "sensitive." It left quite a bad taste in my mouth; I agree with this review (in Japanese) fairly strongly on that one. I feel like you easily could have replaced the entire circus sequence with something else and it would have fit the vibe of the first half better. The notion of double-casting is interesting, but kind of, imo, underused and could have been developed better.

I WILL SAY that I believe that the Toho fixes some of the uninentionally funny moments of the Korean -- I think the blocking is overall MUCH stronger. I deeply appreciated that, for example, you don't have the Monster singing a wonderful, heartwarming song to the little boy by the river...only to push him in it at the end. (I'm sorry, I KNOW it's meant to be a serious moment, but he just...pushes him. Like *splash*!) I much preferred the choking fake out, it got the point across, conveyed the danger, without..."Goodbye, kid" *splash*. (So I might have cackled.) Also, the Slippy Slide of Doom from the final confrontation in the Arctic is mercifully taken out, meaning that I can fully enjoy the angst at the end without laughing at the Victor slipping and sliding while trying to drag the Monster's corpse around. I feel like, ultimately, the Toho did more with less, and could have produced an even better musical by moving further away from its source material. ("Source material" of course meaning the Korean musical, not the Shelley novel.) To some extent, their hands were tied, because there's only so much you can do, but...I will say that I'm still likely to get it, sometime in the future, I think that the performances make up for it, but I still think that...it's hard to compare it, as a production, to something like Marie Antoinette or Elisabeth where Toho was firing on all cylinders.

Like I’m overwhelmed with trying to choose so please know I enjoy reading so many more stories than just what’s listed!

Five good/positive things that happened to you in 2020: 1. I was made an aunt for a second time! And then a third! I gained a new niece and nephew this year and have been lucky enough to get to meet them and love on ‘em a little in this crazy year. 2. I’ve been able to maintain steady employment and safely work from home. I know that’s been a struggle for a lot of people this year, and I don’t take it lightly that I’m a lucky one. Our county also just told us today that we’ve been approved as “essential workers” for the vaccination and I’m signed up for the first dose next week! 3. I’ve gone outside and taken walks more frequently! With the shutdown happening right as spring hit my state my roommate and I often took walks when we were finished working to help get out of the monotony of of living within our apartment. When I moved this summer I learned there’s a little park within walking distance and it has a path along the river so I tried to walk there as often as I could and hope to continue to go on not super-cold days this winter. 4. I think I’ve come to truly appreciate time spent with family and friends. Before this year, I think it’s safe to say that most everyone would never have expected to lose the ability to see the people you love and I finally realized how much I had taken that for granted. I’m an introvert, but I have a number of friends that I like to see regularly and when that was stripped away it was a shock that I never expected (let’s be real - this whole year is a shock none of us expected). I think I’m losing my point which is simply I LOVE MY FRIENDS AND I MISS THEM AND I ALSO APPRECIATE THEM SO MUCH. 5. THIS. THIS WHOLE SPACE HERE. ALL OF YOU LOVELY PEOPLE THAT I’VE MET AND GROWN TO LOVE. I could prolly go on for dayz about what this space has meant to me but this is already a super long post and we don’t have time for that. Truly though, I’m so lucky to have met such talented, thoughtful, intelligent, beautiful, funny, etc etc people. Bellarke fam -- y’all have been the most welcoming and I’m forever grateful to have decided to join tumblr and interact with you guys. You’re all so incredible and I love you. LONG LIVE BELLARKE.

Things That Got Me Through 2020: A Long List Of Random Recommendations

Hi! 2020 was awful but throughout it I found a lot of amazing things to get me through it. So just in case things get tough some times in 2021, here’s some wonderful distractions, amazing stories, and things that I just loved in general. Hope you enjoy any that you give a try! Also, I always love new suggestions if anyone has any!

BOOKS (Or actually just one book because I did not read nearly as much as I though I did)

- The Martian By Andy Weir (Sounds like it would be really depressing, actually one of the funniest books I’ve ever read! Can’t recommend more.)

WEBCOMICS (What a great year to discover WebToons I tell you)

- Lore Olympus By Rachel Smythe (Worth the hype in my opinion!)

- Let’s Play By Mongie (I enjoyed this much more than I could’ve imagined, my romance loving self squealed when reading certain parts.)

- SubZero By JunePurr (Amazing balance between romance and plot.)

- The Remarried Empress By Alphatart/Sumpul (Reads like a soap-opera, main character is my favorite type of female protagonist, smart, confident, and not ashamed of it, love interest is adorably infatuated and I live for it.)

- In the Bleak Midwinter; By Kat/Ali (I got sucked into this one. The world building is great, the world itself is so interest and I loved the premise.)

ANIMATED SHOWS (20 minute episodes came in clutch this year with my short attention span due to anxiety)

- The Dragon Prince (If you like animated series at all, you’ll like this I think.)

- RWBY (Season 1 is good, Seasons 2-3 are pretty great, 4-5 were not my favorites by any means, 6 is pretty good, Season 7 was sooo good!)

- Ever After High (Thanks @raesofmoonlight for the recommendation! Possibly the best character design I’ve ever seen. Watch it if you can!)

- Avatar: The Last Airbender (Zuko alone is worth watching the show, add in all the others, the world building, the humor, the writing, just watch it already if you haven’t yet.)

- DC Superhero Girls (Sometimes I think about this show’s version of Bruce Wayne and start cracking up.)

LIVE ACTION SHOWS (I’ve been so caught up in animated shows since March I forgot I watched some really good live action ones till right now)

- Galavant (A medieval musical. Pretty short episodes, hilariously silly, my favorite way to lose twenty minutes of my life at a time. If you’re not sold yet, how about this: They started the second season by singing a song about how they didn’t think they’d get a second season.)

- Anne With An E (Gilbert Blythe owns my heart and soul and wow the show is so much better than the typical teen dramas. Love the historical aspect too!)

- Jane The Virgin (I got so attach to this show’s character my goodness. Top tier writing I think.)

- The Umbrella Academy (This show is so freaking addicting. It’s never what I expect it to be and I love that. I love the music, I love the action scenes, I love the characters. Watching the second season now, wow the characters make you feel for them. )

MOVIES (I’ve never watched so many movies as I did this year so here are my favorites, although half are DC animated ones so sorry if that’s not your thing)

- The Martian (One of the best book to movie adaptations I’ve ever seen, Matt Damon was the perfect person to play Mark Watney. )

- The Entire DC Animated Movie Universe (My favorites are Justice League: War, Son of Batman, Batman v.s. Robin, Justice Leagus v.s. Teen Titans, Reign Of The Supermen, Justice League: Dark Apokolips War but I think it’s worth just watching them all in order. The characters are all so great. Most of them have amazing team dynamics.)

- Batman: Under The Red Hood (If you like Batman, you’ll probably like this movie or maybe you’ll hate how emotional it makes you either way.)

- Miss Americana (This is the Taylor Swift documentary. I actually just discovered how much I love her music and I found this to be super fascinating in showcasing how the media portrays female entertainers.)

MUSIC (I have this horrible feat or people judging my musical taste so if you do please do it silently)

- Taylor Swift (This year has really just been non-stop Taylor Swift for me. Her albums Folklore and Evermore in particular helped me come to terms and cope with 2020 as a whole.)

- Hamilton: An American Musical (I’m not even going to bother to sell this one, there’s no need to.)

- The Little Mermaid: The Musical (I like fairy tales okay and Alan Menken is a musical genius and I will fight anyone who’s says otherwise.)

YOUTUBE (This definitely needed it’s own category)

- Philip DeFranco (I got really overwhelmed with all the news this year so most days I decided to just watch his twenty minute show everyday and it really helped. Just a good way to keep up to date without getting overwhelmed.)

- Technoblade (Okay, real talk: MCYT took over my life since I discovered it in August. I could make a whole separate list of all my favorite minecraft youtubers but I decided to just put my favorite, the Blood God himself. You might consider it a sign of the times that my family and I watched The Potato War saga on the television on Thanksgiving. Highly recommend his whole Hypixel Skyblock series or just his Skywars Solos or everything he does actually.)

- BuzzFeed Unsolved (Great way to get a good laugh in and also learn about creepy cold cases and also aliens. The two host, Shane and Ryan are the best. Ghost in general are fun.)

- Tingting ASMR (Shoot! I almost forgot! A large portion of my sleep last year was due to this woman. I’m not really one for ASMR myself, I don’t really love whispering in general but I really love her approach and I find it super calming!)

Okay! I think that’s it. I hope some of these things bring some of you joy or peace. Please give me any suggestions you have. I am always open to recommendations. Happy New Year everyone!

(this is so random) besides zendaya like they are my badass black women role models. my one accomplishment would be to learn to body roll like them LMAO

i’m liking tfatws, the second episode was veryyy intense imo but WANDAVISION IS SO GOOD😭 i knew it was going to be my favorite from the really old trailer but it’s really good and i promise it’s not just sitcoms, girl especially cuz you’ll have all the episodes already out- we were having to wait every week😭 BUT ITS SO GOOD I PROMISE HDJSHDJSH lmao reading this i was like “i- the episodes aren’t an hour long” but i feel that, it’s hard for me to watch tfatws bc they are an hour long and i’m like 😐 but wandavision episodes are less than 30mins bc I KID YOU NOT they have the damn 10 MINUTE CREDITS DHDJSJ no i don’t think we’ve talked about this b4 lol but it all depends on the series for me. i binged love island uk in less than a week bc i was so invested and LITERALLY LOVE IT but uh those episodes are like an hour and a half, but say i was binging tfatws (it’s so hard to type that ohmigosh) i honestly would not be able to do it bc of the intensity (you may be like what intensity but if you’ve seen episode 2 by the time you’re reading this.......... isaiah and the scene afterwards is all i have to say, esp me being black it was so tough :/)

girl you’re fine, as long as you’ve experienced it once hahaha i think the reason why it’s so important to my family (this letter feels so personal and extreme HSJSJA IM SORRY) is bc my grandmother loved it and in my family i guess it’s just important to us lol like my mom and dad love it too and we have the literal VHS tapes LMAO, but it only came up recently cuz my youngest brother was watching lion guard HAHA and he wanted to see the originals :) and fun fact (unless you already know) but there’s a lion king part 2 and 1 1/2 and i have all three ON VHS HAHAHA but i love lion king 1 duh (the og) but part two’s music and love story..... is so good. anyway. 🦁

I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING DURING THE WHOLE MOVIE THEATER ENCOUNTER THING HAHAHA AND WHEN SHE WAS SAYING AWKWARD I WAS LIKE WTF THE NOISE LMAOOOO i don’t think there’s a better way to describe that whole situation than ZKDHDJSHAJAJSHDJSNAHA. yeah. yeaaaa at the cinemas (i like the word cinema more than movies 🥰) here they have chips (fries), some have ice cream, nachos, drinks, hot dogs, the cinema we were at had pretzels and like BURGERS I WAS LIKE HUH OKAY and ya know obviously popcorn but i don’t know why the theaters (or cinemas) here do that, it started a long time ago though like yearsssss

PLEASE i have the longest movie watchlist and uhh haven’t seen any of them JDJSKA (istg i use HSJSSKSH as a period - like . ) i’m still hype for cherry but very hesitant (idk if i can handle it) but i’m thinking about watching it in the next couple of weeks? i know it’ll take me forever bc i’m gonna have to keep pausing and shit but idk. i’ve asked around for very specific trigger warnings and time stamps so i REALLY know what’s coming (even if it spoiled the film a bit for me) but i do really wanna see it (i think? writing this now i’m not so sure lol) so whooooooo really knows lol, but chaos walking YES i was really excited about it :))) and about my friend uhh dude you don’t sound mean at all i was literally thinking the same thing but worse HAAKL idk what she was there for???? she bought my ticket tho so 💁🏾‍♀️ whatever

(who is literally a frog for 3/4 of the film 😭😭) so yes i‘m here for it too😌😌😌 (obviously she‘s not a cartoon like tiana ekdlek but she‘s a disney princess you know what i mean ddkjdh)

Dkdkdkdj so @ Rindfleischet.. blah bla. so it‘s basically just loads of individual words put together/connected and that‘s a really big part of german. so yesterday i had an online Einführungsveranstaltung for uni (like it was a zoom meeting where they just talked about general stuff about the uni and i was really anxious before, idk why, but it turned out absolutely fine so) and that words consists of the two words Einführung (introduction) and Veranstaltung (event) which are also two individual words but you can make a new word (Einführungsveranstaltung, so in english that‘s basically “introduction event“ lmao) by combining those two words. there are obviously some rules like you can‘t just combine random words in a random order but you can basically make infinite words (technically). for example (i feel like i‘m teaching a class just skip this if you don’t care 🙃🙃🙃djdjdkdlns)

for example i could say Einführungsveranstaltungsteilnehmer (which is not underlined with red by tumblr because it is a grammatically correct compound word (i think that‘s what they‘re called?)) which is the words introduction + event + participant, so that word just means “participant of an introductory event“ but instead it‘s one word? i hope that makes sense? dkdkkdksks i mean it makes sense in german but idk if it makes sense to you cause idk if i‘m explaining it very well lmao,

Okay so skdjdjdjddhhddhdhjsk... I used to watch all of my series in German (like H2O) bc obviously they were on german tv so they were german- and i knew that most of these actors i saw on tv were american and i was always SO fascinated that they all learned german for this show??? folklore think piece

for a lower case album such as this, i will be writing a lowercase think piece on the subject. i will not explain why. you get it or you don’t.

the 1: i have never been in love or any type of romantic relationship that left me with lasting feelings of any kind. but, on my fourth listen through of this song today, what once was just a promising and fun intro to this peasant girl summer gut punch, brought me to actual tears as i sat on the toilet in my lime green childhood bathroom as if i were mourning the one that got away (another great song). however, i am an expert on being hung up on the past, the “what could have been”, and made up hypotheticals. this song also introduces the film motif seen a lot in this album. i think dating an actor has really gotten to her. anyway what a killer way to begin, top notch stuff. how can a song be so fun and so soul crushing at the same time?

cardigan: when did taylor wear black lipstick? this is important to me. an old cardigan is an inherently bisexual article of clothing. that is not an opinion. i read it somewhere today and i believe it. this is the tip of the queer-coding ice berg in folklore, never fear. another reference, “tried to change the ending / peter losing wendy”. this year i wrote a movie script where both peter and wendy were both gay. coincidence? probably. basically this one is classic taylor poetry on every level and it being one of a trio in a larger story makes it that much better. yet again, high school romance is not a universal experience (like for me for instance) but haunting my “what-ifs” is going to haunt me for a long time. and the thought of someone saying i was their favorite cardigan makes me want to scream into a pillow.

the last great american dynasty: my favorite ts songs have always been the ones with detailed characters and stories and this one introduces the trope of the “mad woman” who comes back later on as well a long with many fun character details. at first this song is just cheeky and cute, very visual, a fun world to jump into. but then this particular stretch of lines makes your heart drop into your chest and reminds you why taylor isn’t just always fun and always cute and always creative, she also holds the ability to nimbly sock you in the gut when you least expect: “fifty years is a long time / holiday house sat quietly on that beach / free of women with madness, their men and bad habits / and then it was bought by me.” my jaw is still on the floor. and i’ve never bought a house myself. but i’ve spent numerous christmases having a marvelous time ruining everything (so i’ve been told) so this song still applies to my life.

exile (ft. bon iver): i’m gonna be honest. for as long as i can remember i have strongly disliked bon iver and i never remembered why. it is a matter of principle at this point. i just don’t trust him. but then taylor announced she wrote a song with him which filled me with tremendous anxiety. but i can rest easy. much like “the last time” this song is a ts and male artist collaboration i can get behind. also the film motif again: the only time i’ve left a theatre when i didn’t like a movie was never because movie tickets are so expensive and if i’m shelling out 11 dollars to sit in a chair, i’m staying the whole time no matter how bad the ending. but i probably would have left my sister’s keeper if i had seen it before if i’m being honest. so i get it. thats why i read spoilers for everything i watch before watching it, because the anxiety of worrying about how it ends make me not enjoy it in the first place. the end of this song: the call and response felt… ethereal? i felt like i was watching a broadway musical from the splash zone seats, crying as i was spat on.

my tears ricochet: this song is what i picture stepping outside in the middle of the night when an inch or so of snow has just fallen and i can see the flakes fall in front of a street light sounds like. or the scorned secret ex lover throwing themselves onto the coffin demanding to know why they weren’t enough. which is to say it feels like a sign from some sort of god. yet again, haunting is brought up, an overt reference to the fact that this album will live in my brain rent free for eternity. for some reason this song reminds me of the relationship between hamilton and burr when burr kills hamilton. that could be because i just watched the disney+ recording last week. one lives, one dies, but neither survive, both pay for it. Which is a super romantic and understanding view on murder. both musical experiences equally chilling and moving. if i die under mysterious circumstances this will for sure be played at the funeral.

mirrorball: first off, this is my mom's favorite which is very important. also, it has skewered a very specific but also universal insecurity of mine; existing just to please others and yet miserably failing. it is comforting that ts is not a “natural’ and feels she must always “try try try” because i too lack natural ability, but also rarely “try” even just the one time. the best way i can describe listening to this song is walking through a silent disco where everyone else is listening to some classic lady gaga jam and you are listening to a calming lullaby sung very far away. but don’t let the soothing sounds fool you. it still will have you reflecting on what it means to look and be looked at. a dark rabbit whole, like falling through the looking glass. i’ve never actually read that book though so i could be wrong.

seven: i’m dumb and on my first listen of this song i thought she “hit her peak” at 7 clock as opposed to age seven. but i always saw taylor swift as someone with an early bedtime. also a fun discovery while writing this, “seven” is the 7th song on the track list. clever. although this song is young and innocent and so nostalgic for a time when screaming ferociously was a widely accepted form of expression, it also sounds like a very old secret someone is whispering to me. a love from long ago that lasts beyond the person being in your life, passed down to me and it all just sounds a little gay. not just because of the specific line to hiding in the closet. but that certainly doesn’t go unnoticed. when i was seven i was definitely in love with girls and assumed that was just what friendship was, playing pirates and making plans of running away together.

august: the eighth track for the eighth month. her mind. also my birth month so that’s special. controversial opinion: from what i’ve read most people seem to think illicit affair is the third song in the triage of teen love. i will strongly make the case that it's actually this one. first of all, the subject: a short lived summer fling, which is specifically mentioned later in “betty”. the central heartbreak of this song is liking someone who always belonged to someone else. yes, this song is a window into a different summer, far from pandemic central and the escapist imagery is delightful. but a whole song from the pov of the “other woman” to james and betty is just so much more fun. and there are two more specific lyrics that prove my point. “remember when i pulled up and said "get in the car”” you will see later comes back from the other person’s perspective. and most of all: the repeated line, “meet me behind the mall”? only teenagers make plans to meet up behind a mall. i rest my case. so now we have cardigan and august. two pieces of the puzzle.

this is me trying: i’m glad i now have a succinct message to send to anyone when they ask me what the hell i’m doing at any given moment. this song just sounds like regret and waste in the most self-assured and confident way. this is “back to december” with the training wheels off. i have no apologies for my efforts at wasting all my potential. but in this song, taylor has opened her arms to me in a warm embrace and has forgiven me for all i’ve done wrong and reminds me to not take for granted the “try”. okay mom. i’m crying again, but okay.

illicit affair: this is the kind of thing that makes you feel sixteen, living in a dull suburb, while secretly screwing your 38 year old married neighbor who’s rich but wants to be an artiste. aka like a character in euphoria or something. it’s sexy and dangerous until you think about it and then it's just dingy and creepy. but this song starts and stays beautiful. most importantly, this song is too sad and depressing frankly, to be a part of the trilogy. we could never forgive james for leaving such a mess and making her a fool. you don’t want to be this girl. you want to walk up to her and shake her and yell “you exist and will not be ruined by any dumb man”. and that’s feminism.

invisible string: is it reductive if i say this one’s about joe? all my non-stan friends have asked me which ones are about him. we forgive them and point them in this direction. because it is lovely and beautiful that we are all tied to our soulmate for our whole lives before we ever meet them (because that would in fact mean that there is someone out there for everyone which might be naive or dumb but i am both of those things and whats the point of living if you don’t believe in the power of love). this honestly gives me “begin again” vibes in the best way. it’s red-era level with the wisdom of lover-era tay. sublime.

mad woman: the second mention of the “mad woman” as both taylor herself and the character in the story. as usual, tay stays calling out double standards and the manipulation of women into “going crazy” for expressing reasonable anger. I, personally, wish i could say “fuck you forever” without someone saying i’m “overreacting”. this is my least favorite song on the album and i’d still listen to it three times in a row and need to resist the urge to set a man’s lawn on fire. just girly things.

epiphany: i know she said this one is about her grandfather’s experience in the military but all i imagine is a slow montage of harry style’s character in “dunkirk” on the beach. and it’s beautiful. and much like my sophomore in high school self reading “all quiet on the western front” it evokes a pain from deep inside me that engulfs a loss i could never describe and a sadness too awful to witness. you will listen to this song and feel absolutely powerless to the will of the universe and it’s cruelty. and the faint but steady heart monitor beep in the background… i’ve never seen “grey’s anatomy” but i can imagine why it has so many fans sobbing. and let me end on this: two soldiers in some old war (meaning both men based on dunkirk) watching each other like this and living and dying together…gay.

betty: the first verse was pulled directly out of my subconscious fantasy of being in love in high school and it being so wonderful and painful and dramatic. and taylor riding a skateboard… is a mood. the song has been out for less than a week and it’s already a cold take to talk about how this is her gayest song to date (close runner-ups being reputation’s “dress” and “cardigan”). but of course i will still talk about it. the lyrics embody such authentic awkward gay energy (see the lesbian in booksmart for reference) and having been a 17 year old only three years ago, i can say with reasonably good authority that no 17 year old straight boy could stand in front of a crowd of peers and beg forgiveness from a girl he hurt. it’s just not realistic. these are all awkward, over-dramatic, young girls stumbling through love. and it’s awesome. james is the speaker of this song, and the subject of “august”, the summer fling that was never truly there due to james’ love for betty, the titular role of this song. thus completing the love triangle. and there are so many obvious references in this song to both “august” and “cardigan”. rhyming cardigan with car again makes me want to light myself on fire in the best way. i love it. “i dreamt of you all summer long” is the final nail in the coffin for the girl in “august” who was clearly just a place-holder. totally separate from taylor swift, my favorite word is porch. so the amount of times it appears in her lyrics is wonderful. say it out loud. it just feels nice. anyway, this song makes me want to be young and dumb and in love. the second can really only be tolerated because of the first and third. i hope the story has a happy-ending. if james were a boy i’d wish him the plague.

peace: the coming-of-age movie starring james and betty (and inez) is over. we have come to “the age” i guess. there’s a thought that’s gonna fester. if this song was just the line, “would it be enough if i could never give you peace?” over and over for four minutes it would still smash me to pulp and fill my body with helium gas. i can and will cause a car wreck when this comes on the aux. if this song is what being grown up is like (bare in mind grown up to me is like, 30) then i’m ready to be done coming of age. because i already worry if i’ll be at all enough for anyone and way too much for someone at the same time. but like all good poetry, this song isn’t about what it “means”, but how it “feels”. and this is new york city, the summer, pouring rain, a long walk home, desperately fearing and hoping they are there waiting for you.

hoax: a one-sided conversation between me and my stubborn clinical depression. i too, constantly stand alone on the cliff demanding a reason. one has not yet been presented. it operates both within and and against me. i could be bigger and stronger than it. but instead i tend to it like a prickly plant. (“no other sadness in the world will do”). there is nothing both sadder and funnier then the scene in “avatar: the last airbender” when prince zuko stands alone on a cliff screaming at the sky for lightning to strike him. i don’t know why this song reminds me so much of that. what a way to end such an emotional rollercoaster. it is so emotionally draining that it simply forces me to start folklore again from the top and listen to it all over again. or take a long therapeutic nap.

there are no skips. and it will still surprise you on your 267th listen. proceed with caution.

i knew you, in a past life maybe. i have not met you yet, but folklore has made me believe you exist.

this is basically an AU me and @snazzieyama have been talking about where haikyuu characters are the actors in Hamilton, and i haven’t been able to get it out of my mind so have an obnoxiously long set of headcanons about it

HEADCANONS

hinata auditioned for hamilton despite having literally no theatre experience besides like school musicals and like one community theatre show. he was cast in ensemble at first but worked his way up to hamilton’s understudy and then the official hamilton

tsukishima auditioned for burr. he was salty that he was cast as someone else (his dynamic with yamaguchi was too good to pass up and akaashi had a better voice for Wait For It) at first but then he immediately clashed with hinata and took great pleasure with being able to roast him every night

in Alexander Hamilton, the laffayette/jefferson and mulligan/madison parts switch actors every show so bokuto, tsukishima, tanaka and yamaguchi all get to do it. sometimes they switch it at the last minute because “please dude my grandma’s come to watch i need to be on stage as much as possible”

tanaka has the Best fun on stage. he never fails to get the crowd pumped, he is jumping around and bringing so much energy, especially in his part in yorktown. it makes you mad that its a musical and you can’t start jumping up and singing along

suga was cast as seabury because he was perfectly good at the role and they preferred kageyama as eliza, which he auditioned for originally. he’s really good at it but it took way too long for Farmer Refuted to come together because him and hinata kept bursting out laughing. they both consider each other, like, the least threatening people ever, and they couldn’t take it seriously whenever hinata would have to get in suga’s face

SOMETIMES IT STILL HAPPENS!! if you watch carefully, you might see one of their lips twitch while they try to keep a straight face. the minute suga gets off stage, someone always has some cushion or piece of clothing he can laugh into because once he started laughing while his mic was still on

THE BIGGEST CAST JOKE IS ABOUT THE HEIGHT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HAMILTON AND ELIZA!! kageyama looks so much taller than hinata (coz he is but its so noticeable when they’re alone on stage) and they torment hinata with pictures where it just looks ridiculous

oikawa always absolutely steals the show. he’s so dramatic, but he’s also one of the most simped-for cast members and sometimes he’ll throw a wink into the audience in the middle of You’ll Be Back to make things more interesting.

also the bits in act 2 where he just comes in to watch and laugh at everything that’s happening? he’s so fun! just because he’s not the main focus of the scene doesn’t mean he isn’t gonna make the most hilarious facial expressions. half the audience ends up focusing on him instead.

daichi is the most commanding washington literally ever. he just comes on and he immediately takes over the stage. he barely has to try to give the character the air of authority. literally the perfect actor for the role

he’s also been in the show the longest. was cast as washington right off the bat and has been doing the role for multiple years. it makes him the unofficial dad of the cast and the go-to for advice since he’s seen a bunch of people do every other role

the “CALL ME SON ONE MORE TIME” line was another one that took too long for them to do without laughing. daichi has been doing this for ages but when he practices with hinata, he can’t help but laugh because this is the kid who he witnessed choke on hello kitty gummies with five minutes until the show began (back when hinata was in ensemble). hinata does the line too well and its hard to take it seriously at first

akaashi singing Wait For It is the literal most beautiful part of the show. he’s an amazing actor and his voice is incredible and it’s the sort of thing you could rewatch on loop for an entire week non-stop without getting bored

bokuto got akaashi the audition for burr, and even though their characters don’t interact too much their chemistry is really good. The “everyone give it up for everyone’s favourite fighting frenchman!” line is so genuine they just really admire each other as actors

lev auditioned for lee for the sole purpose of getting the line “i’m a general, WHEEEE”. he got the role mostly because he was just,,, really good at that line

atsumu refused to interact with anyone outside of rehearsals and performances for a solid month. the instagram of the cast had loads of photos on the story that were just mugshots of him saying “day 24, atsumu still won’t talk to us :(” whenever any of the cast take over it for a day

akaashi is the second most simped-for actor in the cast (after oikawa). you can literally feel people in the audience swooning in Dear Theodosia because he’s just so sweet

when yachi found out she was the only girl in the main cast she was literally terrified. she latched onto kiyoko really quickly and there’s a ridiculous amount of pictures that every fan has seen of those two together

kiyoko is really mesmerising as the bullet!! when she’s lifted her form is just stunning she just looks really nice okay-

every wondered whether kageyama would be like,,, actually good because he just seems kind of awkward off stage, but the minute he’s on stage and following a script, he’s like the perfect eliza

nishinoya has the perfect range for both laurens and phillip. fun and friendly yet still principled and serious rebel? check. small sweet nine year old? check. charismatic flirt? check. heartbreakingly dying from a gunshot wound? check.

tsukishima is a really unique jefferson. he’s not as flamboyant as the role usually is, but he’s super sassy to make up for it. it’s really refreshing and SO fun to watch. “uh,,, france?” becomes “france.” with a ‘are you stupid’ expression

yamaguchi wasn’t expecting to get anything past ensemble but he came in to audition with tsukishima and he is so good at what few lines he has. “which I wrote!” is said with such a scandalised tone, it gets a laugh every time

everyone who knew kenma before thought he’d be too awkward to do maria but he is actually really good once he gets past the initial awkwardness, he manages to portray her like a victim really well

i’ve already done like two of these so here’s some more scenes that took too long before they didn’t burst out laughing: eliza teaching phillip to play piano in Take A Break (just imagine nishinoya and kageyama doing it i can’t-), the duel in Ten Duel Commandments (the height difference between nishinoya and lev made them laugh every time they turned around), 90% of Say No To This but especially the kiss (kenma would just stop and get off like ‘no, i can’t, i can’t do this’ every time it was about to happen while hinata just started cackling)

part of the reason noya got cast as phillip as well as laurens was because he’s one of the only people who auditioned who was shorter than hinata

in rehearsals, akaashi has fallen off the table from The Room Where It Happens because they couldn’t time him jumping while the tablecloth was pulled off. there’s a compilation of the falls on youtube, no one knows who recorded them, let alone who posted it (it was kuroo)

speaking of kuroo, he takes his like five lines and he runs with them. he’s awesome as james reynolds but he’s also the fandoms favourite instagram of the cast because he just posts all the backstage shenanigans. he’s somehow always recording whenever something is going wrong.

he also teases kenma relentlessly about how their characters are married, but kenma is having none of it. it always goes like “awe we’re married” “,,, you’re literally abusive” or “come on, do it for your husband” “i’m cheating on you”

(i stopped here to jam to That Part of Hurrican. i wrote my way out hell i wrote my way to revolution i was louder than the crack in the bell i wrote eliza love letters until she fell-)

bokuto managed to rap Guns And Ships first try. he listened to it like twice, read the lyrics, and he could immediately do it. he took ages to do a convincing french accent though, and it pained everyone

TSUKISHIMA COULDN’T DO THE FAST PART OF WASHINGTON ON YOUR SIDE AND HAD TO ASK BOKUTO FOR HELP

bokuto is just,,, such a good laffayette. he’s jumping all over the place, flexing his muscles while he does the fast raps without looking out of breath at all. it seems almost impossible

also!!!! kuroo has a ridiculous amount of videos of bokuto backstage fortnite dancing to serious songs like Burn or Its Quiet Uptown

kageyama in Burn!!! heartbreaking and beautiful but he burns his hand on the letter too often. he’s gotten used to it at this point so he only slightly flinches when the flames touch his hand. its worrying

congratulations was almost brought back because atsumu really likes it and he absolutely kills it. they recorded him singing it in like a studio and everything because its just that good

when noya found out yaku was playing eacker he was so happy because they’re both short and he already looks ridiculous and tiny enough in the first duel

tsukishima will never admit how much fun he has with “southern motherfucking democratic republicans!!!” but its so clear his eyes literally shine (he kind of carries that line coz yamaguchi and akaashi are a lot more mellow)

oikawa once got dared to fortnite dance in reynolds pamphlet when he’s throwing the one singular sheet of paper. he was going to do it but the directors found out about it and literally threatened to fire him if he did it (they did it in a rehearsal to make up for it)

you know that bit in Your Obedient Servant where its like “careful how you proceed good man, intemperate indeed good man, answer for the accusations i lay at your feet or prepare to bleed good man”? literal chills from the look on akaashi’s face when he does it

whenever other cast members get food gifts from fans and they leave them unattended atsumu will always steal them. only daichi has figured out its him and he has kept quiet on two conditions - he leaves his alone, and he gets half of all the cakes

sometimes yachi just likes to lie down in the middle of the spinny floor and spin to destress. yamaguchi joins her sometimes.

there’s always a ton of people waiting at stage door, and kuroo has made it his mission to come out first and announce everyone as they leave. people play along with it and cheer for every person. some of the cast (mainly oikawa and bokuto) make it super dramatic and do massive bows as they walk out. kageyama never fails to look bewildered despite it happening every day

oikawa chills in full king gear backstage way before and way after he needs to. like half of his instagram is selfies is him in it doing dramatic poses. he’s broken the crown too many times because it fell off his head

hinata sometimes subconsciously does the My Shot dance while he’s going about his life. he can’t escape

they can be sorted into three groups: is the literal sweetest baby to their fans and is kind of shocked they even exist, adores having fans and fully expects them to exist, and the ‘i appreciate the support but pls leave me alone i want to go home’

i don’t know how to round this off but this is getting too long and its gonna keep on going because i’m listening to the soundtrack as i write. maybe there will be a part 2 one day.

17. why i chose this url: when I was really little my older sibling would start their diary entries with "dear fatcakes,". they told me they had the patent for the phrase, but I wanted to be just like them, so I started one that I would address "mr. fatcakes", as a means of circumventing their patent. I thought I was a very clever 9 year old at the time. then when I made my first tumblr I thought blogging=journaling so I gave it the same name. I never bothered trying to come up with anything else.

18. following: 34, tho a handful of them are inactive blogs from people who moved on or passed away, who I'm still following for sentimental reasons.

19. followers: 412 but like. most of them are inactives from my hamilton phase I think??

20. average hours of sleep: uhh I think it averages out to like 4 or 5 hours a night but I either sleep for ten hrs or Not at all. depends on the evening

22. do i play any instruments: uhhh I played the clarinet and guitar in middle school for band, and in my second year of high school, back when nyx and I first started dating, he taught me the basics of how to play his saxophone. I'm woefully out of practice with any of those instruments, though, you know how it goes. back in elementary school I taught myself piano, though, and I can still bang out simple tunes. I think the most complex things I still know how to play are the vocaloid songs I memorized when I was 13/14. mostly I just stick to like disney music and nursery rhymes when I'm playing bc they're easy and the ppl around me will recognize it

23. what am i wearing: just my red plaid pajama pants and a grey tank bc I was doing laundry

24. dream job: uhhh god idk. If I didn't have to worry about paying for shit the kind of work I'd actually spend my time doing.... probably making art, being a counselor/tutor for the kids who stay after school, uhhhh and sewing/mending.

25. dream trip: if I can take nyx with me, then to japan, bc they wanna visit a cat island and shop the tourist traps. otherwise?? probably travel to wherever ciara or joker or bonbon is, just to visit.

26. favorite food: meat!! I love every land meat I have tried and I like most fish. specifically when it's savory though- I can't stand like that sweet sauce ppl put on meats sometimes, or how sweet prepackaged lunch meats are. It ruins the taste and always makes me feel nauseous :-/

Fandoms: The Magicians! I dabble elsewhere when the mood strikes, but lately the mood is striking Magicians all day every day.

Most Popular One-shot: Promises. I’m proud of this one!

Most Popular Multichap: Hmm. I guess by kudos that would be Lover’s Touch, but Maybe This Time is much longer (240k, YIKES), and has more comment engagement, etc.

Favorite story you’ve written so far: I have a recency bias problem which is that whatever I’ve done most recently I think is the best, because I’m (hopefully) improving with each story I write? So I’ll cheat and name two. I truly think my current WIP, A Comet Pulled From Orbit, is the strongest thing I’ve written, but due to its subject matter and more “gen” feel, it’s gotten less engagement. BUT, if we’re going for something purely Queliot, that would be is it too late (or could this love protect me), which I think is quite strong, and you should all definitely read!

Fic you were nervous to post: Oh, definitely A Comet Pulled From Orbit. It’s Alice POV. It’s an Old Guard AU. It’s plotty and full of action scenes and while Queliot plays a meaty supporting role, it’s Alice’s story, and I worried nobody would bother with it because of that. I still get nervous that comments will dry up on every chapter I post!

How do you choose your titles: MY LEAST FAVORITE PART OF WRITING. Lately, I’ve gotten on a song lyric kick, but using musical theatre lyrics, so... Cabaret was the inspo for my last longfic title, then the current one is Wicked... I have a Hamilton lyric I think I’m going to use for an upcoming one. It works for me, and takes away the stress!

Do you outline: Yes, but loosely, with lots of gaps for scenes to naturally add themselves in. For my current story, which I’m trying to plot more like a conventional novel, I definitely broke out the major plot beats that I needed to hit, and I had a pretty good idea of chapter count based on those. But I don’t have a super detailed bullet point list or anything.

Complete: 22 on Ao3 (out of 24 total, one of which is abandoned I guess). Half of those are Magicians.

In progress: Just A Comet Pulled From Orbit is in progress for me currently!

Prompts?: I kind of freeze up when given prompts. Would love to try it out, but usually unless I come up with the idea myself, I don’t have the motivation to finish it.

Upcoming work you’re most excited about: The thing I’m doing for my Big Bang, which is SECRET, and then also the Queliot/Qualice/Malice/Marliot messy nonsense that I affectionately refer to as “sexcapades” which lives almost entirely in my head right now but I sure am excited to write it someday...

Worlds I would love to write for in the future: Uhhh Queliot owns my whole ass currently, but I really did love The Old Guard, hence my current WIP, so maybe I’d dip in and write about those characters, too? We’ll see if inspiration strikes!

First he heard a splash off his ship and then a clambering and mad scramble of boots scraping wood. He was roused from whatever thought he had been pondering to see the horror of his own men jumping overboard to their icy deaths! It was clear by their panic they had been possessed by something terrible, but what was that sound?

He grabbed his pistol and quickly ran to the side of the boat where men were jumping, grabbing their clothes to hold them back. He heard lovely singing as his eyes landed on a mermaid, beautifully singing his men to their deaths. What the hell was so fantastic about his voice that they felt the need to jump overboard for it? Was there something he was missing? Perhaps he would never know, but what mattered was getting this damn mermaid away from his ship.

He cocked his gun and pointed it at the mermaid who just looked at him and smiled.“You better stop whatever curse it is you have placed on my men and leave now if you want to stay alive.” He growled. The mermaid stopped singing and a final splash sounded loud in his ears as his heart sunk.

“How about you join me in the water?” He purred, swimming closer. “I promise you it’ll be worth it.”

“Why the hell would I jump to my death just for a good singing voice?”

“Oh come now, don’t leave me here all alone.” He tilted his head and batted his eyelashes, trying to look cute. How foolish did he think George was? And how foolish were his own men for falling for his terrible tricks?

“I will not be fooled so easily, this is your final warning. Leave or I will shoot.” The mermaid pouted and suddenly rose with the water to meet him eye to eye, resting his arms on the side of the boat and gently pushing George’s gun away from his face.

He leaned close like he was scrutinizing his face, looking him up and down for answers, his head tilted in confusion.

“My song does not work on you?”

“You’re a lovely singer, but I certainly don’t see the need to die because of it.” George stared at him, beginning to feel equally confused. The mermaid let out a sweet laugh that resulted in fishy breath being puffed in George’s face.

“Well then I guess I’ll just have to...” he trailed off, leaning dangerously close to George until he gently pressed his cold, wet lips to George’s own. He stayed frozen for a moment in shock and confusion, waiting for the mermaid to pull away.

“Do you wish to join me now?” He smiled slyly, sharp teeth jutting out.

“No?”

“What do you mean no!” He shouted, throwing his arms down in frustration, splashing the water that held him up so high.

George wiped his lip, the taste of salt lingering. “A salty kiss will not convince me to die for you.”

“Salty? You mean it did not taste sweet or whatever else you humans desire?”

“And why should it taste like that?”

“Because I am a siren you fool!”

“Well of course you are, but” George paused, “I thought sirens were supposed to be...well don’t take this harshly but, beautiful?” The siren gasped, his face turning a little pink.

“What do I look like to you?”

“A mermaid.”

“Be more specific than that, please.” He hissed impatiently.

“Well you have nice hair, I suppose, but where your ears should be I only see fins and your hands are webbed and almost opaque. You reek of fish and the sea, your eyes are a bright green and the pupils remind me of a cats. And there are gills near your chin and...” He looked down at the mermaid, “your tail is quite lovely and colorful, and there are some more gills there right before your tail begins. Is that detailed enough for you?” He just barely smiled at the dumbstruck siren.

“But that is impossible! How can you see me?”

“It’s really not so hard.” George smiled a bit wider, finding the confused siren to look a little more endearing with each confused pout. It seemed he was smarter than he ever knew.

“No! It- it should be impossible! There has never been a single soul who has actually seen me!”

“And who are you anyway?” George asked. The mermaid paused, looking at the churning sea where his unlucky men floated away.

“My name is Lafayette.” He spoke after a moment.

“Well, Lafayette, I must ask you to leave and never come back.”

“No! No- I need to know what is so different about you!” He grabbed George’s jacket, soaking it in saltwater. “Is there some sort of charm on your person? A mystical sea charm you found during your adventures?”

“The only thing on my person is some gunpowder and bullets.” He grumbled, pushing the siren off. “Now please I do not want to kill-“ Lafayette’s eyes lit up as caught sight of the chain around George’s neck. He beamed and quickly lunged forward to yank it from his person. He smiled triumphantly as he held it too far away for George to reach without falling overboard, but he still swiped at it.

“Are you not so strong without your little charm?” He teased, jangling it over the water.

“Give that back this instant!” George roared, “that is not yours to take!”

“Oh, but wouldn’t you like to fetch it now? Come into the water with me.” He sang. Suddenly the dazed man beside him lunged forward and George had to seize him to keep him from jumping off.

“Dammit, Lafayette! That’s not a charm and I am still no more interested in dying! Give that back now!”

“Oh fine.” He pouted, placing it back in George’s hand. The man beside George began reaching out to touch the mermaid, but Lafayette splashed him with water, a grumpy look on his face.

He turned his attention back to George. “So you are just...immune to my spell?”

“I suppose so.” Lafayette sighed, throwing his arms up then placing them on the wood to lay his head against, deep frown still on his face.

“I don’t like not knowing things, George. You realize that no one has ever once been so resistant of me? But you are not even fighting! You are so annoyingly unaffected!” George saw Lafayette’s eyes look at his hand, frown deepening, clearly lost in thought.

“Well then, if we are done here, I will ask you one more time to go.”

Lafayette sighed loudly once again. “Fine, I will go.” He lowered the water back down to the sea so he could begin swimming away, discontent apparent even in the way he swam. Something about seeing the sad mermaid swimming away made his heart ache.

“Wait!” He called out, leaning over the side of the ship. Lafayette stopped and poked his face out of the water, half of it still hiding.

“What?”

“Will I,” George gulped, “ever see you again?” George could make out a wide smile on Lafayette’s face, looking right at him before turning back around and swimming away without another word.

George watched breathlessly as the colorful tail splashed and twirled, like he was showing off. George watched the siren go until he could no longer see even the slightest glimmer of color in the sea.

“No! You’re letting her get away!” The man cried out, lunging forward as Lafayette disappeared.

“What is wrong with you people?” George grumbled to himself, leaving the man to his grief. It at least seemed his spell was not effective to make them die when he was not singing. George would have to be sure to write every detail of his encounter with the siren in his journal, and to remember his face if he was to ever see him again. But he felt the mermaid was not a creature he would be forgetting anytime soon.

I don’t think I’ve ever writtenanything for them, but here’s some headcanons.

Also this got loooong and I still didn’twrite out all my thoughts, but it’s 1 in the morning so I’m going to cut it hereand hopefully add more later. ^_^

Roman is the one who brings themtogether as friends at first.

If it was up to Virgil and Logan,they’d stay inside all day and not socialize with the rest of the world.

So much to do, so many possible confrontationsto avoid, better to avoid the trouble.

But Roman has a way of moving people.

He throws their schedules upside downand gets them to come out of their shells in ways they didn’t know possible.

And somehow they don’t hate it.

Roman is bright, idealistic, andpassionate. Sensitive as he is strong.

He’s like a puppy ready to take onthe world.

Logan and Virgil silently agreethat they must protect the puppy. He’s cute but kinda dumb.

Logan and Virgil aren’t quite sure whyRoman’s so insistent on being around them. They think he’ll get boredeventually.

Roman never gets bored. He actually thinksthey’re really cool and he just wants to impress them.

Logan and Roman share a passion forwriting. They can sit and talk for hours about ideas and phrases and metaphors.

Roman writes his own stories. It’s a bigdeal for him to share his writing and open himself to criticism.

Roman shares his work with them.

Logan becomes the editor he never knew heneeded.

Logan has a way of correcting thelogistics of Roman’s writing without tearing him down.

Virgil doesn’t contribute much to thoseconversations, but he likes listening to them a lot.

Whenever Roman asks Virgil for storyideas, Virgil’s go to is, “Make a meteor crash down,” or something of the sort.

Virgil mostly bonds with Roman over music.

They have a lot of similar tastes andfavorite bands.

Roman’s a big musical fan, but Virgil’snever really listened to any musicals.

Roman gets Virgil into musicals. Virgildoesn’t tell him he’s succeeded at first.

Roman catches Virgil humming, “Michael inthe Bathroom,” one day and squeals loudly in glee.

“Oh my god, Be More Chill? When didthis happen? We have so much to talk about!!!”

Logan doesn’t care for most of the musicaltalk.

UNTIL HAMILTON IS DISCOVERED.

“So do you like it?” Roman asks, on theedge of his seat as Logan listens to some of the songs.

Logan fucking loves it.

He goes into full history rants and howwell blended the story is for a modern medium and THE LYRICS!!

It’s one of the first times the othersrealize just how passionate of a person Logan can be.

When he’s interested in something, he’sinvested with his entire soul.

In the beginning Logan held off fromshowing this side of himself, not wanting to scare off the other two.

But more and more he’ll get this excitedgleam in his eyes and just go off about a subject.

He makes even the most mundane topicssound new and worthwhile.

A lot of times he’ll cut himself off.

“Oh, my apologies. I’m probably boringyou.”

Roman and Virgil quickly shake theirheads.

“No! Please continue! You’re hot—I mean,you’re not boring us!”

Virgil especially likes listening to Logantalk.

He’s never heard a more calming tone.There’s just something incredibly safe about his voice.

Or maybe that’s just Logan in general,smart and dependable as he is.

Regardless, Virgil will close his eyessometimes while listening to Logan.

He’ll call Logan when he’s feelinganxious.

“Talk about anything,” Virgil willrequest.

After a pause, Logan will respond with, “Haveyou heard about *insert random subject here*.”

Sometimes Virgil relaxes so much that hefalls asleep listening to him.

Speaking of voices, Virgil loves Roman’svoice too.

His usual voice is okay, a bit too loudmaybe but rich and deep.

But then one day Virgil hears him sing.

Roman goes into song, and Virgil immediatelystops whatever he’s doing and stares.

Roman eventually notices the slightlystartled stare. He stops with a smirk. “Impressed, Hot Topic?”

And Virgil hasn’t regained quite enoughsense to respond with the usual banter. Instead, he just nods in wonder,looking at Roman in a newfound light.

The honest response does things to Roman.

It’s only fair. That voice does plenty toVirgil.

Virgil’s always been a sucker for prettyvoices.

But a cute guy with a voice like an angel?

Virgil is very gay and very doomed.

Virgil is the first to fall for the othersin a romantic sense.

He keeps it to himself of course. Ofcourse he couldn’t be normal and just crush on one of them. Fate was cruel anddemanded it be both of them.

And of course neither of them wouldreciprocate. Better to just repress that shit and move on like nothinghappened.

Roman was always kinda low-key into theothers, but for all that he presents himself as the romantic, he’s incredibly apprehensivewhen it comes to romance for himself.

He’s got a lot of deep-rooted insecuritiesburied in there. He doesn’t know if he’s ready to dig all that up.

So he does his best to distance hisconscious mind from going in that direction, even while his heartsubconsciously falls slowly over time.

Logan simply never pictured himself in anykind of romantic context.

He just never thought about it is all,never felt a particular want for it.

But then stuff starts happening betweenhim and the other two.

One time Virgil’s close to having a panicattack, and Logan grounds him by taking his hand.

“I want you to squeeze my hand Virgil. Don’tworry, you will not hurt me.”

And it’s enough contact to keep Virgilconnected yet small enough not to overwhelm him.

It helps immensely.

Logan sees this and starts using thismethod frequently. Not just when Virgil’s super anxious.

They’re in a somewhat crowded store andVirgil fidgets slightly? Logan holds his hand.

They’re sitting together on the couch andVirgil’s stressed trying to formulate a business email? Logan holds his hand.

Virgil is confused and gay.

Virgil does not bring attention to thehand holding, only panics internally because WHY IS LOGAN SUDDENLY HOLDING HISHAND ALL THE TIME?

Virgil doesn’t let go of his hand eitherthough.

And then with Roman, Roman is veryphysically affectionate.

Roman will often come up from behind anddrape himself over Logan.

“Speeeeecs, I’m hungry. Feed me.”

Logan thought he was annoyed by the breachin personal space at first.

But more and more Logan starts realizingthat he’s more annoyed when Roman doesn’t breach his personal space.

Roman hasn’t hugged him or thrown an armcasually over his shoulder in a while?

Logan will look at Roman more, eyessquinted, trying to figure him out and then himself out and wondering why he’sso bothered.

Logan eventually concludes that he likesbeing physically close with Roman.

When Roman takes too long to initiateaffection, Logan does it for him.

Logan will pointedly sit down right besideRoman and lean against him.

“Watchya doing, Microsoft Nerd?” Roman asks,blinking at the not-at-all subtle approach Logan’s taking.

Logan doesn’t look at him, choosing toopen a book. “I’m getting comfortable to read, isn’t it obvious?”

For some reason Roman gets a little shywhen the others initiate affection.

Roman has long since been used to havingto be the one to initiate things.

It’s kinda…really nice, not to have to askfor things.

The three of them start becoming very comfortablewith physical affection.

Roman will often lay his head in Virgil’slap, and Virgil will scratch at his hair while scrolling on his phone.

Roman melts under the touch.

It’s one of the few times he’s evercompletely silent. He’s always burning with the urge to move, to create!

In these moments, he can happily soak inthe peace.

Logan feels warm and content when he seesthe two of them like that.

Considering that in addition to all ofthese other signs, Logan has an epiphany moment.

He is attracted to the other tworomantically.

It’s a fairly shocking realization forsomeone who’s never experienced such a thing before.

Logan takes it in stride though.

He starts listing out the pros of them allbeing together.

The three of them work better togetherthan alone, he concludes.

With that in mind, Logan approaches theother two and asks them out.

BEST MOVIE MOMENTS OF 2020

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

Abe Makes Dinner from ABE

Teen chef protégé Abe (Stranger Thing’s Noah Schnapp) hopes that his dinner blending Israeli and Palestinian dishes will mend a bridge between his Israeli and Palestinian families (as well as his atheist father). But he gets a sad dose of reality when he learns the hard way that a wedge between families can’t always be solved with a meal.

“Wait for It” from HAMILTON

On June 16, 2016, Leslie Odom Jr. surprised many by beating Hamilton star/creator Lin-Manuel Miranda for the Best Actor award at the Tony Awards. And now they understood why thanks to Disney+ presenting the musical. And it all has to do with the song “Wait for It.”

In this soulful musical number, Odom Jr. allows us to understand Aaron Burr’s beliefs in letting fate leads his path. Whether it’s winning the heart of a married woman or watching all his loved ones parish, Burr is willing to wait for destiny to reveal why. It also showcases the contrast between Burr and Hamilton. This song changes Burr from History’s villain to a complicated anti-hero.

10) Deku and Bakugo go full Super Sayan in MY HERO ACADEMIA: HEROES RISING

My Hero Academia always delivers great action scenes and they truly shine in their latest round in the cinema.

In his final battle to protect young brother and sister Mahoro (Tomoyo Kurosawa in Japanese, Dani Chambers in English) and Katsuma (Yuka Terasaki in Japanese, Maxey Whitehead in English) from ruthless power-stealer Nine (Yoshio Inoue in Japanese, Johnny Yong Bosch in English), underdog hero-in-training Izuku “Deku” Midoriya (Daiki Yamashita in Japanese, Justin Briner in English) transfers his “One-For-All” power to hotheaded classmate Bakugo (Nobuhiko Okamoto in Japanese, Clifford Chapin in English). The result is an image of the in super powered form resembling Super Sayans.

When Deku reaches 100% power, the film suddenly turns white then stretches into abstract imagery.

Honestly, the main reason I put this on the list is because it’s pure awesome and I’m not afraid to admit it.

9) A Survivor Model from COLLECTIVE

This documentary follows the reporters of Romanian Newspaper Gazeta Sporturilor as their investigation into the Colective Club fire in Bucharest that killed 27 people and left 180 injured exposed vast health care fraud that caused survivors to die in the hospital and would bring down the government. Another key focus is a survivor who was so badly burned she lost most of her fingers. The camera focuses on her as she watches conferences about the fire.

In a standout moment, she models for photo shoots. In this moment, we see a beautiful woman who refuses to allow her disability to stop her, revealing her power.

8) the Wuhan Flu Song from BORAT SUBSEQUENT MOVIEFILM

Many best scenes of 2020 will focus on the bed scene with Tutar and Rudy Gulianni. But I prefer to focus on the scene where Borat (Sacha Baron Cohen) performs the “Wuhan Flu Song” at a Anti-Masker Rally. Not only is it deliciously cringy and hilarious, but It perfectly captures all of Cohen’s strengths as a comedic performer.

As with Borat’s previous cringy yet catchy “Throw the Jew Down the Well, Cohen uses the Borat persona exposes the ugliest side of America. Watching the Qanon conspiracy theorists cheering on Borat (under the guise of Country Steve) singing about injecting Obama with the Coronavirus horrifies while splitting sides. This moment reveals the dangerous consequences of misinformation and conspiracy theorists on society. Plus, the song is shamelessly catchy as hell.

Add the fact that Cohen was nearly attacked during this scene shows how far he’s willing to go to make a point and get a laugh.

7) The Dinner Scene from LET HIM GO

This scene is a perfect example of how you put subtext in a scene. On the surface, It’s just Weboy matriarch Blanche (Lesley Manville) serving porkchops to her daughter in law Lorna’s(Kayli Carter) former parent in laws Margaret (Diane Lane) and George Blackledge (Kevin Costner). But with the context of Margaret and George trying to deliver Lorna and their grandson from her abusive husband, you can feel the hostility in the atmosphere.

It’s a credit to the actors and their ability to hide their aggression under a mask of southern hospitality. It’s especially true for Manville, who brings to life a woman who is a master of hiding her cruelty under a pleasant smile. She may sound welcoming to them, but you can tell something’s off about her. No wonder she’s able to manipulate the police into siding with her. Hell, many audience will be surprised when they find out she’s British in real life.

Lane matches her every step of the way with the most nuanced jabs.

It won’t get as much appreciation due to it’s unassuming nature. But it’s a perfect scene to show how to bring nuance to a performance.

6) The Restaurant Scene from THE INVISIBLE MAN

At first, it seemed Cecilia (Elizabeth Moss) finally has the drop on her sociopathic control freak ex Adrian (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). After days being tormented by him, Cecilia finally has proof of how he turns invisible. Now she goes to a public restaurant to convince her sister Emily (Harriet Dyer). But then a levitating knife appears out of nowhere and slits Emily’s throat before flying into Cecilia’s hands.

Director Leigh Whannell and cinematographer Stefan Duscio do an excellent job using everyday envirnoments to create a sense of unease. Whenever the camera lingers on a kitchen, you search with anxious eyes for any sign of Adrian. In this case, they use the ambience of a crowded fancy restaurant to create a false sense of security. And yet, you can’t help but wonder if Adrian’s still watching them.

It’s in this scene where title character goes from a good villain to a great villain. Here we see what a cunning monster he truly is. The scene also showcases Moss’s terrific performance as her desperate eyes showcase the complete helplessness she feels in this scenario.

5) Edna sheds her skin in RELIC

Rarely do the words “horror” and “heartbreaking” go together, but that describes the ending to this underrated gem.

Kay (Emily Mortimer) returns to her family home to care for her mother Edna (Robyn Nevin), who seems to be suffering from dementia. Now she and her daughter Sam (Bella Heathcote) find themselves trapped in the crawlspace while fleeing a warped Edna, who has been warped by a supernatural force. With contorted joints and decaying flesh, she has become monstrous. At first it seems they have defeated Edna and are heading out the door.

Then Kay looks back to see her mother lying on the ground, struggling to breath. This brings the film into a unexpected turn as Kay carries the creature that used to be her mother to bed. When Kay peels the skin off Edna’s body to reveal a charcoal skinned, dying creature, the film goes from creepy to heartbreaing. Anyone who ever lost a loved one to dementia will recognize to devastating feeling of watching them fade away right in front of your eyes.

4) The one-take action scene in EXTRACTION

Well, we can’t have a best movie moments of 2020 list without mentioning the 10 minute action sequence from Extraction.

As black market mercenary Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) shields the kidnapped son of a drug lord from other mercenaries, his race across a Bangladesh village delivers all you want from an action movie. Fast paced car chase? Check. Semi-automatic gun battles? Check. Hand to hand combat? Check. Parkour across rooftops? You bet. Sometimes you’ll even get people get hit by cars during hand to hand combat. All of this happens while cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel makes it look like one take.

Sure, sophisticated viewers will recognize there the cuts are hidden. But when director Sam Hargrave is willing to ride on the hood of a car as it races across dirt roads for the sake of a shot, you can’t help but be impressed

3) Opening Bike Ride from THE CLIMB

The film begins with what sees like a regular bike ride. American Mike (Director and Co-Writer Michael Angelo Covino) and Kyle (Co-Writer Kyle Marvin) are racing across the road of a French mountain before Kyle’s wedding. But then Mike reveals he’s slept with Kyle’s fiancé, resulting in the furious Kyle to chase Mike. Unfortunately, they’re both too exhausted to commit to a long chase.

The whole opening sequence could be its own short film. Covino and cinematographer Zach Kuperstein) shoot it all in one unbroken take, allowing the awkward exchange to flow more naturally. It leads to a hilarious moment when Kyle tries to chase Mike, but neither have the energy to keep going. Plus, it summarizes the reoccuring cycle of the film with Mike becoming increasingly self-destructive and a terrible friend and Kyle being nice until pushed too far.

2) The Ending from UNCUT GEMS

After spending two hours in a state of panic, it looks like the audience will finally breath a sigh of relief. After locking his pissed off brother in law Arlo (Eric Bogosian) and his goons Phil (Keith William Richards) and Nico (Tommy Kominik) in the Jewelry store with him, smooth talking jeweler and gambling addict Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler) makes the biggest win of his life via pinpoint accurate predictions of a basketball game. Now he has millions of dollars; way more than enough to pay off his debt. Everything’s coming up Howard. That is until the furious Phil puts a bullet in Howard’s head and proceeds to rob his store.

With all his reckless behaviour (including putting his girlfriend at risk) and overconfidence, you knew at somehow Howard was going to be punished. But when the flilm cuts to scenes of Howard’s family celebrating the game and his girlfriend leaves with the money, you can’t help but know how bad they’re going to feel when they find Howard dead.

Then the camera zooms into Howard’s bullet wound to reveal the same colourful kaliedescope imagery as shown within the title uncut gems. With Daniel Lopatin’s enchanting new wave score playing, this moment gives the audience a moment to finally relax before closing with Gigi D’Agostino’s L’amour Toujours.

In spite of (or because of) his flaws; Howard is himself an uncut gem.

1) The little things inspire Joe from SOUL

Everyone recognizes “The Pixar Moment”; that scene that elevates a Pixar film from great to extraordinary. No one can truly define it, but it’s the one scene from the film everyone talks about. It’s the ten-minute prologue from Up. It’s Anton Ego’s reaction after trying Remy’s dish in Ratatouille. Even a lesser Pixar film can have this moment; a perfect example is when Lighting McQueen allows Ramirez to race in his place in Cars 3. Now we can add another film to the list thanks to Pixar’s latest masterpiece Soul.

After a day of escaping the afterlife and being trapped in the body of a therapy cat, Joe Gardner’s (Jamie Foxx) has finally achieved his dream of being in a Jazz band. And he feels…nothing. So, he heads back to his piano to ponder his direction in life. Then he finds the items 22 (Tina Fey) collected while in his body. What results is a moment fans will be coming back to in their moment of need.

As Joe rests 22’s items in front of his piano and starts playing, he comes to realize how a pizza crust and a seed truly meant to her.
