Life Series in my style! Specific seasons get different designs but this is a general amalgam :).. Design notes under the cut for a few of the designs i want to talk about, for those of you into that sort of thing.

general notes:

Each season would look different

Winners have purple eye highlights on green life, and on red life they get the watcher symbol in their eyes.

Grian - Standard parrot Grian design, but on red life I go for a more watcher-esque design.

Jimmy - Man has that canary coding. There's poppies embroidered on his lapel to nod to Third Life. The back of his coat has a dog for Secret Life but you cant see it here.

Joel - Evil Shrek. Iconic life merch under his vest thing, and on red life he gets a beard a la Last Life.

Scott - Has his iconic crystals, but on red life they have purple post-Last Life because hes a winner. Has an axolotl patch to nod to Binkie or whatever its name was.

Tango - As his lives go down, the fire gets hotter. Green is mostly red-orange fire, yellow is... yellow. And red is white-hot with some blue at the edges.

Etho - I actually don't really use an arctic fox Etho design? But it just felt right here. Heart patches turn red when he goes red.

Bdubs - Moss cloak withers and red flowers bloom on red life.

Cleo - Apparently the colored bits in her hair were snakes but i always saw them as beads ??

Martyn - Mix of his vtuber and MC outfits, but he has a watcher logo on his arm.

Ren - He goes full dog mode on red life. He's got that dog in him.

Lizzie - I saw one art of vex Lizzie and it changed my brain chemistry. Green and yellow life she's an allay, red life she becomes a vex.

BigB - Heart foundation earrings, plus his outfit goes pink/red on his red life. He was one of my favorite secret life POVs :)

Gem - Her shirt changes color depending on life, and her antlers get bigger and sharper.

Pearl - Wolf ears cuz Tillie, moon/star cloak for symbolism. Cloak changes color with life, moon phases on clasp change as well (crescent on green, half on yellow, full on red). Eyebags because five am Pearl is so iconic.

No, the racism Martha/Freema experienced wasn't a part of Ten's moral ambiguity arc. Ten's karma comes from his ego. Downfall of Harriet Jones? Saxon takes over and she dies. Tenrose cockiness? Creates Torchwood and hundreds die in the Battle of Canary Wharf. Airing Jack? He joins that Torchwood. But telling Martha to ignore race in Elizabethan England? The racism she experienced in 1913?? Getting stuck in 1969 America??? Literally nothing came from that. Davros, Adelaide Brooke, Rassilon.. they looked down at Ten bc he saw himself as the hero despite his objectively villainous actions and his refusal to admit he did anything wrong. They didn't whack him for Martha even tho that would've been iconic. They didn't even know her!

Listen, I like the readings of Ten's ignorance towards Martha being part of the wider interpretation about how S3 handles misogynoir but like.. that's an interpretation. Ten's treatment of Martha does echo dynamics of how Black women are treated by white men (which is a bit flaky bc Time Lords aren't human so why would he support human racial constructs in the first place...?) but this wasn't anti-racist commentary from Russell. Its the result of handling race poorly in the writers room and fans picking up the racial bias of the characters... because those were the biases of that writers room.

In the prologue to Spectral Evidence, Pulitzer winner Gregory Pardlo’s new collection, he writes, “This book is about the legal means by which fear is used to rationalize the persecution of people imagined to be in league with the possessed of supernatural forces. This book argues that the logic used to rationalize the prosecution of witches is the same logic that rationalizes vigilantism and police street justice.” He goes on to consider that both Black men and white women are “similarly pressed into service as both muse and monster in the Western cultural imagination,” while, at their ghostly intersection, the patriarchy is haunted by “the omnipresent but rarely named” Black woman.

One iconic example, brought forth in these shimmering poems of the self as shaped by (and shaping) American history, is Tituba, the only woman of color to be accused in the Salem witch trials.

Occult

Zero your scales to the burden of a lash, Dear Justice, but let Tituba clumsy the Magistrates’ minds with a wag of her wizened index. A flight risk near forests of the Wampanoag where Christians savaged Queen Weetamoo’s corpse, what else might Tituba, nonwhite and woman, haunt but a margin of error? She’s a catbird’s song trapped in the chimney. She’s egg whites in water, she is the tumescence of smoke. Dear Mami Wata, let Tituba prove to be the stone that splits the stream of their vision. Let her renounce sight and be unseen. Let her cough ground coral in the shedding of a pewter moon, that she, of all the innocents, should live. Dear Three-headed Hecate, replace her, the unthought thought, with wax, twigs, horse hair and straw. Let her not appear as a witness. Nor as evidence. As with the talking dog, let her be the hoodoo that speaks through their mirrors. Let a hang-thread skein of yarn ghost the floorboards tempting a red cat—his familiars, the devil and his counsel, the canary. Let her conjure the man in black they fear who charms pilgrims on the road to paradise, disguised as a harmless birdwatcher. Dear Nemesis, let her feed the court a few names from his register—a taste of her truth, her mise en abyme, her one hell that calls forth another. With no standing on her own behalf, let her sit in judgment. Let this power invested of gavel and oath help her give birth through her mouth like a god.

28. What got you into comics?

the batman 2004!!! all time classic cartoon that deserves more love. i started watching it instead of doing a history project and was totally sucked in. it took me a little while to navigate which robin i cared about, so once i'd watched teen titans 2003 i started reading robin and teen titans year one and young justice 98. then on and on it went

39. What comic plotline gives you brain worms?

everything about red hood and the outlaws. i don't have to pick a single plot point - thinking about any part of it actively makes my brain synapses shut off. honorary ment to the time jason todd turned into a tentacle alien in nightwing 96, or everything about all star batman and robin.

40. What's a comic that's so bad you ended up finding it funny?

the black canary + green arrow wedding special. is it dumb? yes and it does not matter to me. every moment is iconic. bruce rsvps no then shows up anyway. dinah fights in a white jumpsuit with a train then kicks slade in the crotch. babs is the maid of honour. bruce performs an autopsy with a chainsaw while wearing his cowl. snapper carr is also there. it ends terribly. absolutely nothing but zingers.

haiii uhm. idk if anyone has asked this but what are some of your favorite character costumes/outfits :O

iggy i love and adore you and i love this question. hold on, i have to dig up some images.

okay. i dug up some images. so many, in fact, that i hit image limit on this post and had to trim some things down. let's go through it.

we're gonna just go ahead and start out with dinah lance, the light of my life. this whole post won't be sorted by character, but she's the one i have the most images of, so she gets her own section.

i know people really, really love the short-haired, less effeminate dinah we get in grell's 80s run. i'll get to her! but i'm going to start by saying that her looks in the green lantern/green arrow run are all-time. please consider, if you will, the most fashionable lady in the room:

(i can't include the house robe from snowbirds, but know that i spiritually do count it as part of this post. i hold it near and dear. for now, these two looks will do.)

her long black hair. her little white vest. the statement necklace for her date with ollie. and look, i would include ollie here too, because his outfits in this run are PEAK seventies dad energy, but i don't have the space and i like dinah more, so you get these.

then comes the 80s, when dinah is in her element. short black hair, noir vibes, wearing graphic tees for things like "seattle slugfest." (in longbow hunters, at least.)

she gets some cute looks in grell's run, obviously, but i'm partial to this little skirt and sleeveless denim button-up because it's so very unlike her. she was putting in the work to look cute, and i appreciate it. oliver, meanwhile, looks like fred from scooby doo.

the 1991 run is important because of her extremely high heeled boots with the BIG cuffs around the calves. i miss the cuffs. i wish they would return to me. but the actual panels i think about the most from this run are when she cuts her fishnet stockings and uses them to tie her hair back.

wh. who. i want to know which people in the writer's room decided that was a feasible option. i just want to talk. i can't imagine a less stable hairstyle to go karate-chop some yacht pirates. come on now. but also, she even ties them in a bow? i love her so much. what the fuck is happening.

she has a lot of good looks in birds of prey (1999), honestly, but none of the artists have EVER IN THEIR LIFE seen a woman's chest. not a one. i'm going to go ahead and stick to the two things i love: the fringed leather jacket (iconic) and the long-pants jumpsuit that they did instead of the fishnets.

i don't know WHY they got rid of the fishnets, honestly, but i like this turtleneck situation and the yellow accents. also her communicator necklace on full display <3 she also usually wears a motor jacket OVER the jumpsuit. slay!

(it's maybe a little sacrilegious to like the long pants costume, given that she is so well-known for the bodysuit and fishnets. but to be fair, even when they cut the legs off this suit, she still isn't wearing the stockings. her legs are naked. 0/10 what the HELL.)

sean izaakse deserves his own post and i would not be able to pick out a limited number of panels from his work on green arrow (2023) but i will say i love dinah's new costume, i love the texture on her jacket, and i love that she gets to have the little canary logo on the chest now.

i assume this was more of a birds of prey (2023) design and not izaakse's personal design, but i love how he draws her hair, and she's so short compared to everyone, and overall she just looks good. zero complaints here.

(actually, i do have a few complaints, they just aren't about dinah. one, lian's eyes should be brown. two, ollie should have KEPT HIS HORRIBLE MANBUN, THAT'S MY DAD. and three, mia's cape should still be yellow on the outside. otherwise, the art in this run is perfect.)

speaking of mia.

the art of green arrow (2001) is not like. my favorite art style ever in terms of aesthetics. but hester really, really sets the tone for a lot of these characters through his design choices. particularly mia, which makes a lot of sense given this is her introduction and he did a lot of the initial work with her character.

the thought put into her costuming. she's wearing baggy clothes to contrast with what she wore before she moved in with ollie, she has the hair up in a messy ponytail, etc etc. this mia is everything to me. and i love ollie, too. he looks like a cartoon dad from a nickelodeon show. which is exactly who he is, to me.

we're gonna detour from dc and into marvel for just a second but don't worry we'll come right back. i was really excited when kelly thompson and leo romero were announced for birds of prey (2023) because i really liked their work on hawkeye (2016). it's such a good style for kate bishop, in particular; it feels very youthful and the style just suits her. this is The Kate Bishop, to me, outside of the 2012 run.

(i also really, really like the way dinah is drawn in birds of prey (2023). she's small, she's compact, she looks like someone who's been doing gymnastics and karate her whole life. i could also fit her in my pocket! perfect!!!!)

but yeah okay i mentioned it so i also need to shout out hawkeye 2012. this comic's aesthetics were so fucking on point, and it is one of my favorite ones i've ever edited because it has such an INTENTIONAL color palette and use of graphics like the arrows and bullseyes.

like i know everyone talks about how good this run is but that's because it is LITERALLY that fucking good. the writing. the art. the characterization. ugh. life-changing.

anyway that's enough marvel (for now). back to my hovel. dc.

spiritworld (2023) was so fun. the art is so intentionally drawing on manga and i loved it from the first issue. you can feel the love put into the character design and the color work, and xanthe's cool bomber jacket and undercut is SO essential. this is the nonbinary rep we deserve.

shoutout to cass's look in this comic, too. i LOVE this costume for her. it moves in such a fun and exciting way when she's flipping around and moving through the air, it has a new silhouette, AND it STILL has the bat on the chest. perfect. everything to me. never change.

that being said, i DO have a favorite cass look, and it's these specific panels from batgirl (2000). the style in most of that comic is great, it's super funky and fun, but these were the panels i saw that ended up solidifying in my brain as "oh, that's cass."

also from batgirl (2000) though, i love the funky design choices because they give us things like PEAK takes on stephanie brown's spoiler costume. she's just a fucking blob to me. look at her.

steph has a lot of fun looks, to me, but my favorite will always be the era in like, issues 110-112 of robin (1993), where they gave her a bob cut and big :pleading: emoji eyes.

i do wish she'd had freckles at this time. i know they were a later addition, but i like them. they add character.

unrelated to AAAANY of that, i need to talk about poison ivy (2022). this run is stuuuuuunning. i've only pulled panels of pamela here because i LOVE the way her freak body horror is done, as well as the way her hair is drawn, but the scenery and the textures of this comic as a whole are insane.

even when the story isn't grabbing me, the art does. it's beautiful, it's unlike any other comic i'm reading right now, and it is one of the first comics i ever looked at that made me go, oh fuck, that's an ART piece. ykwim.

HOWEVER. if we're talking about comics that are just. art. through and through. there are a couple others i need to mention.

supergirl: woman of tomorrow is stunning. the colorwork, the hair texture, the EXPRESSIVENESS of the FACES. ugh. this comic made me cry, yeah, but it also made me stroke the pages lovingly because of the beautifully rendered colors.

i love that kara doesn't always look Pretty. i love that she gets bloody, and beat up, and she looks tired and sad and sick sometimes. i love that it is so beautiful and also you can see genuine hurt on kara's face. ugh. UGH. this comic!!!!

now for the indie shit lol. die (2020) is sooooo lovely. stephanie hans is ordinarily a cover artist, but she jumped onto this project to do pages, and my GOD is it beautiful. the character design, the colors, the expressions. it feels like a PAINTING and i want to EAT it.

there's a lot of body horror and gruesome stuff in here. but like, somehow, even that manages to look pretty? i love the painterly textures. i love how the tone influences the colors. it's all just stunning. i need to go reread this one right now, actually.

annnnnnnd! last one, i promise! it's time for THE FORGED (2023).

i love this comic. everyone in it is a lesbian with an atypical body type, half of them are wearing bondage gear, and it's all set in a space sci-fi setting with more lore than you can shake a stick at.

and on TOP of all of THAT. LOOK HOW BEAUTIFUL THE COLORS ARE.

there are a few honorable mentions i don't have room to include images of, so i'm gonna go off and list them now:

the wild west arc of exiles (2012) in that very painterly style

the scenery and background work in wonder woman: the hiketeia

the INCREDIBLY clean lines and sharp colorwork of dan mora in world's finest (2023)

the super sketchy and rough pencil-esque art in the back half of green arrow/black canary (especially mia! i love her!)

i am sorry but i enjoy the very sharp style of batgirls (2022). i don't necessarily endorse the writing or the story of the run, but i think the shapes are good. sorry. take me out back, i know.

young justice (1998) also has very cute cartoony art!! i haven't read much of it yet, but every time i see it, it makes me smile. which is the point, i think?

OKAY. PHEW. do you regret asking me yet, gobby. did you get what you came for. am i welcome to come yell at you about the forged (2023) and die (2020) until the day we both shed this mortal coil and depart for the great beyond.

Loki from MCU He is single-handedly responsible for my descent into madness with the MCU. None of my friends could get me to watch a single movie until the bestie one day said, "Hey you should come watch Thor with us, there's a character we think you'd like" and it was OVER after that.

The Corinthian from Sandman A lot of people probably think my favorite character must be Dream or Hob because of my ship but nope, it's The Corinthian. My beloved serial killing, eyeball eating, just needs a hug and some validation baby, I love you so. Also, it helps that he'd played by Boyd Holbrook, who I was OBSESSED with as a teen when he was a twinky model lmao.

Hawks from My Hero Academia I know Hawks is a pretty polarizing character in the fandom, and I think that's part of the reason why I love him so so much. He's technically one of the "good guys" as a hero yes, but he has done so many questionably things in the name of corrupt hero society. He's the type of character I'm not sure I'd like if he were a real person, but I think that's part of what makes him so interesting. Absolute sweetheart on the outside, but will gut you like a fish if he thinks it's for the greater good.

Seto Kaiba from Yu-Gi-Oh MY OG BLORBO I LOVE YOU SO 💖💖💖 What else is there to say about this iconic boy? He's a dick. He's rich, screw the rules he has money. He's a meme. He is absolutely over the top and tries to insist he has no friends but he's been adopted by the heroes as a bestie. Love him forever.

Sara Lance from DCTV/Arrowverse I've GOTTA include my White Canary queen because she was my bisexual awakening. I had always known I had some attraction to women, and even had gone by pan for a little bit, but lord my attraction to women came alive with Sara. I may not longer care for Arrowverse, but Sara Lance will always have a special place in my heart.

Hiccup Haddock from How to Train Your Dragon Hiccup holds a special place in my heart for bucking the trend on traditional protagonists. He's a little weakling. People underestimate him. He doesn't always get things right! But he loves fiercely, he's determined, he's smart, and he believes the best in everyone. One of my favorite blorbos ever.

Roy Mustang from Fullmetal Alchemist Smarmy bastard with a heart of gold. He will go the distance to protect those he loves, and he's not afraid to burn people to a crisp to do it. He knows his weaknesses and tries to push past them anyways if he needs to protect someone he loves. Best boy, I love him so.

Harley Quinn from DC Comics Another important character in my bisexual development ahahha. I know Harley's kind of over saturated the market as a Strong Female Character but she's still so important to me for so many reasons. She came out on the other side of an abusive relationship. She's funny, she's silly, she loves life, no matter how many wrenches get thrown at her, literally and figuratively. And her relationship with Pam is SO IMPORTANT to me ahhhhhhhhh.

Jyn Erso from Rogue One Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I love her. She's a grump. She's a survivor. She's a tragic figure drawn into a war she never asked to be a part of and she dies for a cause that never knowing how important her impact truly was. I have read a million fix-it fics and AUs of her and the whole Rogue One crew and still love her to this day.

Q from James Bond (Daniel Craig Movies) My nerdy baby. He's so smart and so awkward and so endearing it hurts. I love him so. He has two cats and a mortgage. Bond takes too much advantage of his goodwill and Q lets him because he's in love a good friend.

Why Pumpkin is the Best Palette

There is a poll going around now that leads me to believe this site is MASSIVELY undervaluing the inherent superiority of the pumpkin palette. I have no choice but to speak out on this manner.

Let’s break down the main features of Pumpkin:

I don’t know about you, but if I didn’t need to read anything, my ideal color scheme would be a black screen. This is a close substitute. Importantly, there are almost no blue tones, which we all know is the evil electronics light color that is poisoning our brains and making us insane. Pumpkin with soothe your brain and make you sane again. Pumpkin can fix everything that’s wrong with you. When your computer shifts into the sunset digital wellness mode that you enabled months ago in a fit of desperation to have a sleep schedule, you can’t even tell the difference in pumpkin mode because it is Perpetual Sunset Digital Wellness.

Also, pumpkin theme has this guy:

That’s your messages button.

Compare this to some of the glaring (pun intended) issues with the other themes:

Snow Bright/Cement/Canary/Ghost:

Deranged themes for deranged people who have something wrong with them. People actively attempting to burn their own eyes out of their skulls. People who haven’t blinked since 2007. They hunch in front of their computers, their faces flooded in light as if they are being interrogated in an old film noir. Remember when they told us not to look at the eclipse? These people did. And they liked it. An addiction formed and now they simply cannot stop abusing their eyes.

Oh, and the messages button on ghost?

Fuck off. A) That doesn’t even look like a chat bubble, it’s literally just a ghost. B) Turning a second button into a ghost also? Lame.

And while we’re talking about that, let’s talk about vampire palette having the EXACT same ghost icon next to the (admitted cool) vampire messages bubble.

You’re not ghost theme!! Why is there a ghost!!

But that does lead us into our usual dark mode options.

Dark Mode/Vampire:

The really disappointing thing about dark modes like this is they come SO close. But the white of the text is absolutely blinding. And guess what part of the page you spend most of your time focusing on!! The text!! It’s like having room darkening curtains with a bunch of little pinpricks in them and the bat signal shining directly at the window.

True Blue:

This falls somewhere between the cursed light modes and the dark modes. The background is fine!! But the White secondary and text colors are a crime against me personally!!

Low Contrast Classic:

This one COULD have rights if you just lowered the brightness on this entire palette until the background was black. Loses points for being blue though.

Cybernetic/Goth Rave:

Let’s talk about everyone’s beloved Goth Rave, which I lump in the same category as Cybernetic. Those text colors are WAY TOO BRIGHT! The black background almost makes it worse because it just accentuates the eye-gouging vibrance of the other colors.

Cybernetic COULD have scored points if it actually committed to the Courier Sans text it promises in the palette toggle:

But no other palettes are willing to make the bold font choices you see in Pumpkin and Vampire.

Finally,

Pride

deserves a special shaming. I am not proud of this palette. This palette makes me want to comphet.

Hell is real.

(I hate that motherfucking new editor visually) Anyway, I haven't been posting anything but I have been writing a lot of things. This is the music video analysis to Own It by Rico Nasty, exclusive to my Raspberry Lemonade patrons (1$), my Iced Tea patrons (5$), my Black Coffee patrons (10$).

The gifs above best visually describe the music video analysis. Here are some excerpts to whet your appetite:

Rico Nasty is weaving a visual architecture of the Black feminine grotesque and repulsive, in keeping with her constant play with horror, glitching technology, focused violence, and scream rap. She gluts the first frame with the sliver of canary yellow leather that sharpens her elongated, jewelry studded body. It's a bareness that's saundered by a diamonted stabbed mask, the characteristic, iconic pair of glassy red lips; BDSM left only with the luxuriousness of self-mortification, a melodramatic performance in and of itself. The canaries and the claws not only signify as visual pun, but hint at cannibalism and butchering, a future horror show in plastified high heels with an artificial tiger as an avatar. What better to deserve the pain than to inflict it ?

The fridge is empty, emitting an alienating green neon light, the stove has never been used. But the monstrous resides in the shrimp extended nails and the chicken feet supporting the performer. If this is about domesticity through the kitchen, then the cooking happens through Rico's body, and this requires the scandal of a human animalization of Blackness, and within it Black womanhood, recoils from. The fifth tableau references and repeats Rico Nasty's oft used visual effect, her flattening within the world of the collage, and thus, her regular insertion into the absurb. She basically inserted herself into a close up of a 60s food advertisement, with the jello salad and the cocktail shrimp. And here she is, looking like a miniature and exquisite shopping basket, ready to be plucked and used.

Musically, Rico Nasty tunnels a manifesto for intentional, riotous, feeling into the song. Visually, Rico Nasty both affirms the grotesque, the abject and the monstrosity of the Black feminine, while putting it in tension with white feminine iconicity, one that is narrated as wounded and suffocated by patriarchy as a material reality, but also one that demands and requires the consumption and the flattening of Black womanhood. Rico Nasty also cites (hi)stories about disappearing as slaughter, when it comes to having a necklace of headless white legs: she of course might be referring of the careless cruelty of some children with their dolls, but somehow, there is also laying somewhere the horror movie performance of an upturning of erasure. Acting out the horror of the grotesque, animality, ungendered violence and unbearable monstrosity becomes a vessel towards recognizing the Black feminine, paradoxally, as whole.
