Eddie, as it turned out, had no idea what to do when it came to first dates. It was because of this that he’d turned up at Buck’s doorstep with a bunch of flowers clutched in his hand. Buck let out a surprised chuckle when he answered the door to see Eddie standing there, looking like a flower girl at a wedding.

“Flowers? For me?” he giggled as he stepped back, allowing Eddie through the door.

“I didn’t know what else to do” Eddie grumbled as Buck inhaled deeply, sneezing as the pollen tickled his nose.

“They’re beautiful, Ed. Thank you”. Buck leaned over and pressed a kiss to Eddie’s lips, smiling to himself as Eddie cupped the back of his head. “I haven’t got any vases though; do you think a cup would do?” he asked as he broke the kiss.

Eddie snorted. “You’re all class, aren’t you”.

“I don’t really have much need for a vase, honestly” Buck responded over his shoulder as he strode through to the kitchen, placing the flowers on the island so he could rifle through his cupboards for an acceptable receptacle. He eventually settled for a cup made of frosted glass and a picture of Bulbasaur printed on the side. He filled it with water, set it in the middle of the island and eased the flowers into it, adjusting them so they sat nicely.

“Perfect” he said, beaming as he stood backwards to admire his work, not noticing Eddie watching him fondly from the doorway, a look of both exasperation and deep affection on his face.

I know you're busy with so many other projects but if you ever wrote a one shot of Zuko and Katara telling each other "I love you" the first time I would melt.

The evening had been a disaster. The restaurant Zuko had chosen had flooded, and even though Katara managed to subtly redirect the water out of the main dining room, a smell lingered in the air that turned everyone off of their meal. Katara suggested stopping by a food stall before heading to the theater. Zuko agreed, albeit reluctantly. Katara made a big show of enjoying the barbequed meat on a stick, and even Zuko had to admit it hit the spot. A full stomach cheered him considerably. Things could only go up from here. Right?

At the theatre, Zuko realized he'd forgotten the tickets to the play. He could have played the I'm the Fire Lord card, but the whole point of the night was to have a normal date for once. Announcing who he was would have spoiled the night, and they would have had to return to the palace because they had no guards. Although, they were both formidable benders...no! Zuko squashed that thought as soon as it occurred. Just because they could protect themselves didn't mean they should have to. Especially not after he'd promised Katara pleasant, lowkey evening out. She deserved it, and he would do anything in his power to provide it.

After the theater didn't work out, Katara suggested a walk through Caldera.

"It's a nice night," she said. "And I've never seen this side of the city." So Zuko made it his mission to show Katara all his favorite parts of the city...only to realize that he'd hardly been anywhere except the main parts. When Katara asked him to show her the parts that weren't meant for tourists, Zuko's mind went blank. He'd only seen either the touristy parts or the parts that had at one point been poverty stricken. Those areas were doing better, but it didn't seem right to take a date to show off peoples' homes. Zuko ended up leading them to the docks, which smelled of fish and fuel. He hurried Katara away once he'd realized his mistake.

"Maybe we should just head back," Zuko said apologetically, once they reached an area of the docks where they could breathe without gagging. "Tonight hasn't turned out at all like I planned."

"I bet not!" Katara laughed, rubbing her nose. When she saw how Zuko's cheeks darkened, she stopped, though the smile hadn't left her face. "I've had a good time, though."

"You're just saying that to make me feel better," Zuko muttered. Though the thought warmed his heart. Very few people in the world cared that much about his feelings. Katara shook her head.

"Not at all," she assured him. "Tonight has been hilarious!"

"Great," Zuko drawled sardonically. "That's exactly what I was going for." Katara couldn't help laughing, even as she pulled Zuko into a hug.

"Don't be upset," she pleaded, still giggling. "Honestly, I love how much effort you've put into this. I feel special."

"You are special," Zuko said earnestly, trying to pour his feelings into the words and into his embrace. "I...I'm sorry tonight was so awful. You deserve to have everything you want."

"I have everything I want," Katara cupped Zuko's face in her hands. "I have you. That's all that counts. I love you."

Time stopped. The entire universe shrunk to the woman in Zuko's arms and the light that seemed to make her glow. Even his heart seemed to have stopped beating in order to not disturb this moment. She loved him. Him! That smile on her face was just for him. That gleam in her eye was because of him! Zuko almost wished for death so he could die the happiest he'd ever been.

Then the smile on Katara's face dimmed. Panic settled over Zuko when he felt her hold on him loosen. She didn't let go, but he felt her pulling back all the same.

"I just wanted you to know that," she said. She shifted on her feet awkwardly. "I don't want you to feel obligated to say it back if you don't-"

Zuko's lips were on hers before she could finish. That she could suggest that he didn't feel the same meant he had done a bad job of showing her how he felt. And this kiss wasn't meant to do anything but to stop the doubts falling from her mouth. Eventually, Zuko had to pull away.

"I have never," he said breathlessly, "loved anyone as much as I love you. It scares me to know how much you mean to me. It scares me to know that I will never be worthy of you. But knowing that you could love me...Katara, that's...that's everything to me."

Zuko could see several emotions pass over Katara's face- he could even name most of them- but finally, she settled on elation. And when her lips closed over his again, Zuko found the same emotion speeding his own heart. Katara clutched at him as if afraid he'd disappear, and Zuko poured every bit of himself into promising he never would if he could help it.

"I love you, too," he said. Then he leaned in to kiss her again.
