Articles I read in May 2022
I normally don't do this, but since I have been working full time on my thesis, I read a lot of articles, so I thought I do a wrap up of those aswell. The theme of the articles is witch hunts and the historiography of witchcraft, as my thesis is on a witch trial. All the articles I found on jstor (and I will link the website), the majority are in English but I'll also include those written in Italian.
The Pursuit of Reality: Recent Research into the History of Witchcraft by Malcolm Gaskill
The Historiography of European Witchcraft: Progress and Prospects by E. William Monter
The European Witch Craze of the 14th to 17th Centuries: A Sociologist's Perspective by Nachman Ben-Yehuda
Who Were the Witches? The Social Roles of the Accused in the European Witch Trials by Richard A. Horsley
Witchcraft, Female Aggression, and Power in the Early Modern Community by Edward Bever
Witchcraft Prosecutions and the Decline of Magic by Edward Bever
The Invisible Men: The Historial and The Male Witch by Lara Apps and Andrew Gow (This is the first chapter of the book Male Witches In Early Modern Europe, I ended up reading the whole book, all the chapters are present on jstor, but I will link only this one. For those interested the book is composed by five chapters plus the introduction and conclusion)
La stregoneria. Confessioni e accuse, nell'analisi di storici e antropologi di Mary Douglas Reviewed by Michela Pereira
Ancora a Proposito di Streghe by Michaela Valente
The full list of books I read this month and their reviews is here

the one aspect of american culture that i will defend to my last breath is the recent high school tradition of taking the practice SAT, signing the page that says "you're not allowed to tell ANYONE what's on this test even when it's over", and then immediately flooding tumblr with highly specific memes about the content of said test

not to talk about the james somerton thing for the 284837627th time, but I'm surprised no one has pointed out how stupid his 'queer women have it easier' take is considering the fucker literally makes it harder for them by erasing their persecution and even the repercussions they face when making media

SYSTEM 002 IN 2022
“We captured our first plastic from the [Great Pacific Garbage Patch] in 2019 with [our ship] System 001/B, and since then we’ve been refining our steering strategy and deepening our understanding of plastic behavior in the oceans.
In 2021 we introduced System 002, and having now demonstrated that our system can consistently harvest significant amounts of plastic, we’re currently in transition to System 03 – our largest and most efficient cleanup system so far.
After demonstrating Proof of Technology the previous year, 2022 was all about cleaning. It was a successful year for The Ocean Cleanup in the GPGP:
System 002: 2022 in numbers
8 trips into the GPGP on cleaning operations
Over 150 days at sea (including transit)
153,000 kg of plastic removed from the GPGP in 2022
4 consecutive trips with catch totals over 25,000 kg
99.9% of catch comprising only plastic
The continuity of cleaning operations during this transition was essential in demonstrating that we are moving towards our efficiency targets and progressing our plan for scale-up. Significant milestones such as the extraction that brought us over the 100,000 kg barrier in the GPGP are documented and shared with our growing community of supporters worldwide, aiding the visibility of our mission and highlighting the urgency of the plastic pollution problem...
PRIORITIZING THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT
We are committed to maximizing our net positive impact on the marine environment. In that light, we place particular importance on one particular figure from our 2022 data: 99.9%. This is the amount of our total catch that consists of plastic, leaving a level of bycatch of 0.1%.
While this is not perfect and we are working hard to reduce it further, we believe this data shows that our mitigation measures and animal protection procedures are working effectively so far. We have also seen a reduction in bycatch rates during the year (see our January 2022 mid-term evaluation) as we implement new learnings and modifications.
Our environmental performance is a result of the measures we have taken since we began our ocean operations. Our systems move very slowly, meaning fish and marine animals can easily swim away, and our crew always has the option of triggering the emergency release to free any animal which has become trapped in the Retention Zone; although this results in the loss of any plastic which has been captured, we keep this option available for any serious encounters.
Upgrades to be implemented during the transition to System 03 include more underwater cameras to allow us to more closely monitor encounters with marine life, and increasing the number of openings throughout the system to allow animals to swim out. We will also be trialing various new deterrent and mitigation measures during 2023, working with our in-house and third-party marine biologists to ensure that we continue to reduce any type of bycatch to the minimal level possible.”

Why do you think you can give Jane Austen’s heroine “a personality”? If she envisaged and created her as timid, quiet, and largely ignored by those she loves girl, then it was to the purpose? If she created her a gentle, thoughtful, unassuming, and merciful lady, then she meant it exactly like that, not because Austen was less clever than you and couldn’t create a “modern” heroine? While none of these qualities exclude sense, brain, originality, and strength of character. Isn’t that already a personalty, like it or not? You’ve no right to cross out heroine’s real personality just because you cannot understand, appreciate, or properly portray it, and turn her, instead, into another instagram girl or an underbread tomboy with no understanding of time and society, just to suit your vanity. Total absence of manners is NOT an equivalent of cleverness, wit, and free spirit; Jane Austen doesn’t deserve the insult to have those carefully and thoughtfully written characters portrayed as clovns. Go give a personality to Hugo’s Cosette or any other of those pretty-faced and empty-headed heroines who inhabit victorian era novels so densily, and have nothing but beauty to boast of. (Not to scold Hugo though, he had his own genius; - tbh, Cosette here is just the latest specimen of the kind I discovered, but one may safely write the name of any victorian heroine fitting the description, there are a lot of- and, yeah, I admit that the Cosette-child had a great deal more character than the adult- ; But I think Jane Austen had at least several-levels more qualified understanding of female characters than most victorian writers generally did).

In 2022: My Chemical Romance performed their twelfth show of the 2022-2023 Swarm tour in Rotterdam, Netherlands. This show was the only one of the tour to feature a short video of the band making pancakes, played immediately before "The Foundations of Decay". At this show, "HAPPY HALLOWEEN" was written on the drums. (🖤)

His 86-show Love on Tour wowed the world, including a 15-night residency at Madison Square Garden, which immortalized the visit with a permanent banner in the iconic stadium. Styles’ chart-topping album “Harry’s House” earned the most first-day streams for any pop album when it was released in the spring. To date, it’s been certified platinum in at least seven countries and landed him six Grammy noms, including its earworm-worthy single “As It Was.” Styles also brought his multifaceted talents to the big screen this year, with headline-making stops at Venice and Toronto international film festivals ushering in his budding movie career. Styles starred opposite Florence Pugh in Olivia Wilde’s “Don’t Worry Darling,” a production that was headline-grabbing in its own right, and as a closeted British cop in Amazon Prime Video’s “My Policeman,” for which he’ll be submitted as supporting actor for the 2023 Oscars.
Harry has been named as one of the most influential business leaders shaping the global media industry by Variety. (29 December 2022)
