SUBMISSIVE MEN APOCALYPSE, I'm talking about men who will absolutely crack open and melt the second that they make eye contact with you.

It could be in the middle of him talking and telling you about his day, and in the split second that you glanced up from your phone to pay attention to him, he started stuttering over his words and had to start over from the beginning of his story because of how flustered you made him.

I’m talking about men who whine and cling to you for reassurance, even over the simplest things.

"I'm going to be late," he mutters against the curve of your neck and shoulder before pressing kisses into the flesh, shivering against his mouth as he sucks hickies into their respective places.

"i hate to see you like this.." said armin softly as he pulled you against him; placing your head gently on his chest before pressing you firmly against his warm body.

you don't know what to answer, you just pressed him closer to you. you close your eyes as you feel his scent invade your thoughts, making your heart race in your chest.

"did you take your medicine?" he asked a third time, checking your temperature with his lips on your forehead.

"i just said yes," you replied, and he sighed. you were shaking, he was sure you had a fever. "maybe you shouldn't be here… you might get sick too", you said, but he shook his head.

"i won't leave you alone like this, my love. i'll be by your side for everything and you know it." armin strokes your hair and leaves a kiss on the top of your head. you are silent for a few minutes while he thinks about what could help you stop shaking; maybe a hot tea or a hot bath.. he thought it was a good idea, but he doubted you could get in the shower by yourself. "angel, do you want to take a hot shower?. maybe it can help you.." he said softly, and you considered for a few seconds; you were feeling so, so weak, and getting out of your warm bed wasn't something you wanted to do, but if armin thought it would help, you wanted to try, so you nodded. "great, i'll help you, okay?"

he felt bad because you shuddered even more at the loss of contact when he came out of the hug; then he quickly put his arms under your legs and behind your back; in response, you put your arms around his neck and rested your head on his chest. armin went to the bathroom and put you on the floor, but he was still holding you by the waist. he turned on the shower so the water was hot when you got in.

then he looked at you, not knowing what to do. you were dating for a few months and it was intimate, but this was a different level. he didn't know if you were comfortable with him taking your clothes off at that moment, maybe you wanted your alone time.

"uhm… y/n.. do.. do you want me to leave? or…?" he started but he got his answer when you hugged him around the waist tightly. armin quickly put his arms around you, holding you tightly.

"alright.. let me help you baby." he said as he carefully grabbed the hem of the sweatshirt you were wearing; he kindly helped you out of it, and then he did the same with your pajamas, so you were in your underwear. armin was watching you during those seconds and noticed that you could barely stay still without his help. you were exhausted and weak: how were you going to shower alone? if only you had a bathtub it would be easier… but you didn't.

"baby, do you want me to come in with you? we don't have to do this if you're uncomfortable, of course.. but i'm afraid you might fall over or something… you look so tired, honey," he said, gently caressing your cheek.

you swallowed; you were comfortable with him and trusted him with your life, but this was something you'd never done… but well, everything has its first time. "yes.." you replied, and he smiled and kissed your forehead before starting to take off your clothes. you got into the shower before him, trying to disguise how embarrassed you felt; you put your hand under the water to check the temperature, and it was hot, so you took a step closer and waited under the water. armin finished undressing and got in the shower with you, holding you tightly around the waist because he was still afraid you'd feel weak and fall.

"are you feeling good?" he asked affectionately but worriedly, and you nodded. the hot bath was relaxing all your muscles and tension, making you sigh as armin stared at you, as if looking for any sign of discomfort. "alright, but tell me if you want to go back to bed, understood?" you nodded again, and he smiled. then he reached for the soap and poured some onto the bath sponge; he carefully began rubbing it into your shoulders, continuing with your back and the rest of your body. he took his time, leaving kisses on your cheeks and neck as he enjoyed and explored your body.

when he finished, he began to wash your hair; he massaged your head with care and affection while you had your eyes closed. then he put you under water again and helped you wash off the soap.

"now it's your turn," you said, smiling. you took the shampoo, poured some on your hands, and started washing his hair, just like he did you.

"you don't have to honey. i'm the one taking care of you," he said a little worried as if he didn't want you to make much effort, but you shook your head and continued massaging his scalp. and at that moment, you felt that look; the one you feel so special when he looked at you like that. the one that made you shiver while your heart races in your chest. that look as if he was appreciating the greatest work of art he's ever seen. that unique and indescribable look full of love that only armin can give you. you kissed his lips briefly, and he smiled. so he took the liquid soap and started washing his body while you finished combing his hair so you could get out of the shower.

after he washed off the soap, you two got out of the shower, and armin wrapped you in a clean towel; leaving a kiss on the top of your head before taking one for himself and wrapping it around his waist. he took another towel, smaller than the others, and began to dry your hair.

"i'm feeling better..", you said, smiling when you saw the wide, genuine smile he had on his face when he heard those words. he was so happy to see you well and to know that he was able to help you a little, so happy that you help him to be better every day.

Character Spotlight: Quark

Do you have the lobes for business? This week, we’re putting our knowledge of the Rules of Acquisition to the test with one of our favorite Ferengi characters: Quark! He really does it all: he tends bar, he runs a profitable casino, he romances ladies who you’d think would be way out of his league, he snarks with a certain gooey chief of security, and he schemes! Boy, does he ever scheme.

The Ferengi overall are a bit of a mixed bag, what with their ultra-capitalist, extremely misogynist society, but Quark proves throughout Deep Space Nine to be a complex and well-written person, full of contradictions and character growth. So read the full contract below and listen to this week’s podcast episode (jump to 55:53) as A Star to Steer Her By takes a seat next to Morn to try to catch the ear of the bartender. Best moments

Make him an offer he can’t refuse Ferengi-centered episodes are typically goofball comedies and worth a laugh or five, and “The Nagus” gets us off to a quite funny start. Quark’s performance as Zek’s successor is full of funny little touches, and the allusion to The Godfather with Quark stroking a gilvo as if it were a lapcat is a good joke indeed. Quark would make a fine nagus, I say. And a decent godfather.

Who wears the clothes in this relationship? Quark may start out as a typical Ferengi, but we see glimpses of his development to becoming a better person due to hanging around all these hoomans. In “Rules of Acquisition,” he’s prepared to pay Pel ten bars of latinum to set her up in a new life, and then outthinks the Nagus when she reveals herself as a female. It’s a small step, but a big one for a Ferengi!

Being with you was the happiest time of my life Somehow, Quark is at his best when paired with reciprocating love interests. In “Profit and Loss,” (not to be confused with “Profit and Lace”), he earnestly attempts to get Natima Lang to safety when the Cardassian government is after her for being a dissident. Sure, it starts off one-sided and creepy, but Natima and Quark’s love turns out to be mutual and really sweet!

Behold the power of math! Yet again, we’re highlighting an episode in which Quark is romantically paired with a kickass female and he comes out looking swish! Not only does Quark battle D’Ghor in “The House of Quark,” but he also exposes the fraudulent bookkeeping D’Ghor had done for Grilka’s house. Quark allows Grilka, one of our favorite Klingons, to realize her agency and be her best.

If they want their money back, give it to them? People give Sisko all the credit, being the Emissary and all that, but in “Prophet Motive” we get to see Quark go into the wormhole to talk to the prophets himself! To save Zek from whatever personality rewriting the denizens of the celestial temple had done to him, Quark takes it upon himself to ensure that Rule of Acquisition #10 remains true: Greed is eternal!

The bigger the risk, the bigger the win Quark’s lobes might only be rivaled by his spine, as he demonstrates an absurd amount of bravery when he disarms the bomb that had Kool-Aid Manned into the ship in “Starship Down.” The thrill of gambling with their lives is perfectly captured in the scene and you feel both the relief and exhilaration when Quark and Hanok don’t explode into little bits.

For a minute there I thought you were talking to me as a friend As we said in the Odo post, the relationship between the constable and the barman is one of the best explored in the series. We can read between the lines how much they respect each other but just can’t say it. So when Quark (in his jammies!) goes to Odo when he’s hurting over Kira in “Crossfire” and pretends it’s just for his business ventures, we all know what it really means.

I claim the Right of Proclamation One good episode with Grilka deserves another! When the ever-glorious Grilka comes to Quark seeking financial advice in “Looking for par’Mach in All the Wrong Places,” Quark goes above and beyond to win her favor. He even practices how to fight with a bat’leth and learns some of the basics of Klingon culture, all while remaining true to his Ferengi identity! Qapla’!

Let me pour you another By the time we get deep into the Dominion War, Quark is keen to play both sides, but he does his part for the little resistance band too. In “Behind the Lines,” he slyly gets Damar shitfaced enough to spill all the information he has about taking down the cloaked minefield. Like another good bartender I could name, Quark’s main role is to tend the bar and to listen.

Nobody moves except you Soon afterwards when everything in the resistance is going headlong downhill in “Sacrifice of Angels,” Quark practically single-handedly (okay, with Ziyal’s help) saves the day! He tricks a guard using a hasperat soufflé and then straight up shoots two Jem’Hadar goons and rescues everyone from the brig. If it’s not the first time Quark has deliberately killed, he sure plays it that way.

Ferengi can be just as tough as Klingons Quark’s choice to assemble an all-Ferengi elite squadron to rescue Moogie in “The Magnificent Ferengi” may seem hare-brained (it’s a goofy Ferengi episode, after all), but it also speaks to his pride in what Ferengi can accomplish. There’s also a pure familial love for Moogie that is worth all the latinum in the Nagus’s reward (minus the finder’s fee, of course).

My, what big ears you have Finally, Quark would want to flaunt how he turned out to be right in “The Siege of AR-558” when the standoff with Jem’Hadar soldiers results in massive casualties, including costing Nog his leg. But Quark staunchly protects his nephew and uses his superior Ferengi hearing to detect incoming Jem’Hadar soldiers and blow them away before they can finish Nog off.

Worst moments

A contract is a contract is a contract We could really, really, really have done without this detail. Sarda, one of the Dabo girls, reveals in “Captive Pursuit” that Quark has sexual favors written into their contracts. It’s one thing for the Ferengi to be misogynists and kinda sleazy, but it’s a whole other level for him to engage in sexual manipulation, harassment, and assault. And for the writers to play it as a joke!!!

You Ferengi, you think you’re so clever but you’re stupid We gave Bashir a pat on the back the other week when he saved Jadzia’s life in “Invasive Procedures” when Verad and his hired goons kidnapped the Dax symbiont. But remember that it was all Quark’s fault that these worm snatchers got onto the station in the first place! In his greed to make another illicit deal, Quark let them through the docking ring. All for a little latinum.

I’ve been waiting for you Can we all agree that it’s a bad idea for the holodeck to be able to create holo-images of real people because it will always get gross? Geordi did it in “Booby Trap,” Barclay did it in “Hollow Pursuits,” Odo did it in “His Way,” and in “Meridian,” Quark violates Kira’s privacy to create a sex object for that creep Toran and make a little profit, which is a running theme with him.

No nephew of mine is going to disgrace our family name by joining Starfleet The way Quark scorns Nog for wanting to follow his dreams and join Starfleet is also a pretty bad look for the boy’s uncle. First he tries to forbid Nog from applying to Starfleet in “Heart of Stone” and then he rigs up the holodeck to ensure he’ll fail his exams in “Facets.” Quark just comes across as an overstepping asshole when it comes to his nephew in these cases.

Quark’s Treasure, ready to depart Shocking no one, Quark is looking to make another deal in kemocite which he couches in generosity while bringing Nog to Starfleet Academy in “Little Green Men.” And of course this gets them stranded in the past in Area 51 for a while, breaking the Temporal Prime Directive and perpetuating the trope that Quark will put profit over his family members at any cost.

Great Exchequer, take me now! I like to call “Body Parts” “Missed Opportunities: the episode!” When Quark learns he owes his desiccated remains to Brunt, Quark just… gives up on life and plans to get himself killed by Garak. And this is supposed to be a comedy! This is so not in Quark’s character and I lament that we didn’t get an episode of Quark faking his own death, which would be infinitely funnier and better!

Why, Quark? Why did you kill my baby? While most of Quark’s schemes are just typical goofy Ferengi shenanigans you’re meant to roll your eyes at and accept with a snicker, Quark actually sidles up to committing atrocities when he gets into the arms racket in “Business as Usual.” When even Jadzia, who’s the most forgiving of his Ferengi ways, won’t talk to him anymore, you know he’s gone and done wrong.

Oo-mox for Fun and Profit After years of development into a slightly better person, and just when you start thinking “maybe that episode in which Quark put sexual favors in his Dabo girls’ contracts was a fluke,” “Profit and Lace” comes along. The teaser shows Quark asking Aluura to consider giving him oo-mox or he’ll consider firing her. And by the end when he should have learned better, he’s right back at it. VOMIT.

You’re the worst thing that ever happened to the entire Ferengi Alliance Speaking of “Profit and Lace,” there’s more to hate in this deplorable episode. Quark gets into a screaming fight with his mother, blaming her radical feminism as the cause of all their problems with Brunt dethroning Zek as nagus. It’s an ugly fight in an ugly episode, and Quark cruelly goads his own moogie until she has a heart attack, jeopardizing their plan to reinstate Zek. And nearly killing her!

The REST of “Profit and Lace” I’m not done shitting on “Profit and Lace.” It should be obvious why we rated it hands-down the worst episode of Deep Space Nine, and Quark’s depiction of Lumba is at the heart of it. It’s like Quark has never seen a woman before and concocts the most demeaning caricature. The hormones are inexplicable. The walk is atrocious. The whole thing flies in the face of any message of equality the show might otherwise champion, all for the sake of a Ferengi joke.

I loved Jadzia as much as anyone in this room After pining for Jadzia in season six almost as much as Julian, Quark weasels his way onto the mission to get her soul into Sto-vo-kor. Throughout “Shadows and Symbols,” it feels like all he wants is to one-up the grief of the actual widower in the room, Worf. Quark makes Jadzia’s death all about him and whines that Worf isn’t gracious enough that he’s there being underfoot.

Someone has to speak up and I’ve decided that someone is me As if all the ogling of Jadzia wasn’t enough, poor Ezri gets targeted by Quark once she arrives on the station. Quark butts in and advises her not to get involved with Worf in “Once More Unto the Breach,” and it’s none of his damn business! The scene plays it off like it’s romantic and funny and cute, but it’s all self serving because he fancies her. Ugh, why did only men largely write this show?

Febuwhump 2023 Day 15

Self Sacrifice

Kira and Insanity stood on the roof of the local bell tower. The rest of the squad were around them on various rooftops. Another titan breakout moved towards a nearby city, the Regiment was requested to stop the advance before it got too close to the walls. The two have been staying with the Scouts for almost two months, helping with their expeditions and other duties. Kira's tail flowed in the gentle breeze as she sniffed the air.

"They're drawing close. The wind reeks of blood." Erwin walked up next to Kira. His eyes locked on the horizon.

"You remember the plan, right?"

"Insanity and I will lure them away from the town and the rest of the Corp will take care of the rest." He nodded and shot a flare. The green smoke trailed behind and Kira jumped off the tower. Insanity quickly followed her with his gear. She sped up with the gas and glided toward the oncoming front line. The young god quickly caught up to her and disconnected his gear. He grew large enough to rival the onslaught of titans. Kira quickly jumped up onto his shoulder, her blade drawn. Insanity roared and ran towards the front line. He turned sharply towards the trees and Kira flew off him. The girl quickly sliced through the nape of each titan she came across. She flew around in wide arcs taking out those who grew too close to his own nape.

Insanity tore through the tree line, and a large group of the ravenous humanoid creatures ran after him. After the god made it to the woods, the forest shook as more gas tanks and grappling hooks fired. At least half of the Regiment went to work cutting down each foe with ease. Kira swooped down, finishing the last one. Her blade was cloaked by steam from blood clinging to the steel.

"Alright let's head back to finish up any stragglers." Insanity held back for a minute before heading toward the town. Kira flew where the horses were being kept hidden away. Many of the scouts already left, leaving Kira almost alone with a few horses scattered around the trees.

"Hey, Kira!" She turned to find Jean and Connie walking up behind her. "That was good work out there."

"Oh," she looked away from the tall boy. His light brown hair ruffled in the wind. "Th... thank you..." Connie placed a hand on her shoulder, the girl met his light gaze as he smiled.

"You've got a real knack for this. You probably could have been top of the graduating class."

"You think she could beat Mikasa?"

"Maybe,"

"Oh, I couldn't have," her cheeks grew red and she shook her head. "I'm not even close to her skill level."

"Come on you guys, we need to catch up with the others." Armin walked up behind the group, leading their horses to them. The blonde boy hopped up onto his mount, the others following suit. Kira hopped up onto the back of Armin's horse, she looked out towards the open field. The horses sped towards the city, her wings close to her body.

The boy's chatter was interrupted by the sound of a flare shooting high into the air. All of them turned to where it came from. Black smoke trailed through the air.

"An Abnormal? We haven't seen one in a while." Kira's eyes widened as they drew close to the city. She quickly leaped off the horse and into the air. Steam trailed behind her as she sped through the sky. Her eyes darted to find Insanity among the horde of titans.

"Insanity!" The girl dove towards him, her eyes locked onto the creature following him. It ran towards the enlargened god, and she screamed again, "Insanity!" She cut down the bodies in her way, gunning toward the young god. The abnormal titan stayed locked on Insanity, it moved fast and rapidly. Kira quickly turned, rushing toward its side, and waiting. Insanity fought off the titans in front of him. The abnormal quickly approached from behind. She turned again as it reached out for the god's neck. Its other hand shot out and snatched her wing. It pulled her back with a tight grip. The girl cried out as she heard as a sickening snap come from her left wing. The creature wrapped its other hand around her chest. She gasped for air as its long fingers coiled around her small body.

"Kira!" He spun around and swung at the abnormal. His punch connected with its jaw and Kira was flung out of its hand. She cried out as her back slammed into the side of a building. The girl fell to the ground behind Insanity. "Kira!" He tried to run to her before more titans rushed towards him, holding him back. The girl didn't move, her dark hair covered her eyes. He desperately fought against their grips but they kept returning with more bodies than the last.

"Kira! We don't have much time! Jean, Connie, help Insanity, I'm going after Kira. As soon as you guys can, help me get her back to the group." The two nodded before flying into the horde.

Kira's eyes barely opened, she tried to move only to fall back down. Her eyes moved to the sound of her name. She felt an arm wrap around her chest and the wind blowing fast again. The girl stayed still as everything sped past her, before stopping again on a rooftop. Voices surrounded her and Insanity drew closer. He spoke but his voice was far away. She whined as something wrapped around her ankle. The girl cried again as she tried to move. It pulled her backward and the light grew bright around her. The god tried to pull her back as something grew out from behind her and yanked her away and into blinding light.
