What I Said Then: "So yeah, I’ve dedicated this page to Mark Waid, since I have seen him trashing exactly this kind of page of late. I saw him single out Geoff Johns for doing it, and I can handle being in such illustrious company. Don’t get me wrong, I take all of Mr. Waid’s criticism of this move to heart, and I think he’s mostly right. But this was something I didn’t want to pass up on any level. We’re building up to something here. It helps that Will just KILLED it."

What I'm Saying Now: I love Mark Waid. He's an incredible talent, a decent human being, and one hell of a nice guy. But I loved this page back then and I love it now. I don't remember his exact criticism of this kind of thing -- us being a page a day (or really, three pages a week) comic might change his calculus a little. (Or it might not.) (Geoff Johns is an awesome guy too -- I've had some great conversations with that guy.)

Sound tactics and a grasp of the rules carry the day. (Jennell Jaquays, Dungeoneer 10, Judges Guild, March/April 1979) AD&D was still a jumble of rules in different books, and many of the combat rules were only in the DMG, not in the Players Handbook, but facing mattered and by the rules available in 1979 the thief might attack the owlbear with surprise gaining +4 to hit and multipliers to his damage rolls:

From the 1978 AD&D Players Handbook (p 27) in the explanation of the thief class abilities,

For over a year a reasonable reading of this was that only the +4 to hit depended on surprise, while the back stab damage multiplier would apply to every successful attack from the rear throughout a combat. The 1979 DMG (p19) clarified that the thief's entire back stab ability depended on an unaware target (with a "back" in some anatomical sense):

In practice a successful back stab might be a rare thing to accomplish at some tables. The DMG did give something back in return -- Even without surprise everyone gets a +2 bonus to hit from the rear throughout a combat (DMG p70):

Plus you could ignore the AC value of shields and dex bonuses (dex wouldn't be listed in most monster descriptions, but this could help when fighting an NPC with complete character stats). In a well-designed encounter these rules encouraged maneuvering through dense terrain, in stalagmite-filled caverns, or around mazes of branching and intersecting corridors trying to get those bonuses.

Not sure if you caught it (I may have written it a bit vaguely) but this part here has some deeper meaning for Zac too (spoilers ahead)

Zac didn't say this just in the sense of getting back home alive, but that he knew he had to get back home to protect and provide for the family he was going to have - to Sunny and his unborn child. Of course, before the carnival fell into chaos, he had no official confirmation that he was going to be a dad, he only had speculation. But he knew the possibility was there. And so at this moment in time, when he was faced with death, he inwardly decided that he was going to make it back home alive. To not leave Sunny a widow, and to make sure his unborn had a father in its life. Which is amazing and noble, but also very tragic. Because we know that Pac ended up having neither mother nor father in his life oof :'D
