It’s already been said that where Saturn is in the chart is where people who fuck with you get their karma. Here’s my advice: under no circumstance fuck with someone with the Saturn in the 5th, 12th, 1st house. You want no happiness? No mental stability? An identity crisis? Didn’t think so. 🕊🕊 It really helps when people share a Risings sign, because they have similar behaviour, mannerisms, outlook on life and attitude. But this can also work to a similar extent for the same Mars sign. If you two are both Sagittarius Mars, you can have very similar habits and lifestyle.

🕊🕊 Mars in the 1st house and Pluto in the 1st (especially if they are together) in the sign of Sagittarius makes for a very indulgent person. They indulge in cigarettes, drinks, food, sex, flirting, relationship all at once😂 They really need that constant thrill.

🕊🕊 More often than viewing your 7th house/DSC sign as an ideal partner, I see that sign is the same Rising sign your partner/people feel attracted to has. It really corresponds more to Rising sign rather than Sun sign! For example: you have Gemini over 7th house, a lot of people you are attracted to might have Gemini/Virgo Rising!

🕊🕊 I don’t want to cause any controversy here, but I noticed Gemini and Virgo Sun or Sun in the 3rd/6th, Sun square Jupiter very often don’t pursue higher education, they often finish at high school or vocational college level. I see that the reason for that would be that they have really struggled with people underestimating them until that age and they just started looking down on themselves and their level of intelligence as well. Always where there is Sun energy combined with Gemini/Virgo, they are very self conscious of their intelligence. However, there is always exception to the rule, since Virgo is also an earth sign and can really apply themselves and becomes a great scholar and Gemini also needs constant mental stimulation so they might push through and pursue a higher level of education. 🕊🕊Scorpio Risings are most likely be the first to do something and they will be recognised for that, however most often it involves a taboo topic or something that might make them more notorius. For example: the highest earning stripper or the first one to start a spiritual business in a small town.

🕊🕊Whichever planet you have aspected with Saturn there will be a delay, so don’t force it too much, it gets better after 1st (and then 2nd) Saturn Return. Like you might really crave a partner/a companion, but you have Moon Saturn aspect or Venus Saturn aspect. Things really evolve the most for you guys after your first Saturn Return (around ages 28, 29, sometimes earlier), but most definitely after the age of 30. Also, never rush getting married before 30 if you have Saturn in the 7th house/Venus Saturn aspects. You might really regret it, it can be actually very short lived and you might realise that despite having a committed partner (Saturn in the 7th house), you are still not happy/content yourself.

🕊🕊 This is oddly specific, but I previously mentioned how Scorpio Risings might be more prone to date someone from a different city or country (Libra over the 12th house). But I noticed how would they almost always “demand” in a way that they partner visits THEM and not vice versa. They rarely go the extra mile for other people, but instead want their partner to accommodate to them and compromise.

I didn’t think that the predictions of your influence on my life were going to come true so fast. I must say, it baffles me. Regardless, I’m here now and I demand your attention, not out of anger or hate, but rather, the thirst to learn a little bit more about the Matters of the Heart and Relationships that you so grandly rule over, in my natal blueprint.

Obviously, over the years you have always managed to bring some amount of self-discipline, self-reflection, self-discovery and even lessons relating to important moments, in my life. Your prominence is crystal clear through the existence of what I call; ‘The Holy Saturn Trinity’ containing the beings in my house. My Mother Dearest being, of course, in the 1st place. Oh, you must really enjoy the sarcasm thrown my way!

Tell me Saturn, what am I to do with all this love that unconsciously grew after coming in contact with him? I did initially think that I fell for him but I didn’t pay attention until my Mother Dearest said to me “I don’t know if you realise this, but somewhere deep down, I see that you have fallen for him”. These words hit me so hard. I only thought of how I could’ve at least paid attention before when the thought came and avoided this pain. It was now so clear in my face, my heart and in my mind.

I mean, he could’ve at least met me, right? I did tell him that it was far, 14 stations far from where he was going to be. So close, yet so far. I guess I just didn’t think that he would actually stop thinking of meeting me when I said “Don’t burden yourself, it’s okay”. Maybe I was expecting too much and tried very little. Maybe I should’ve just…. called him and said “Where are you? Let’s meet if you have time.”

Instead, I just let him inform me of his arrival and departure. It made me so mad. I really wanted to see him. I was so hurt about the fact that he didn’t even once make a phone call while he was here. That night, I sat with a tub of ‘Gold Medal Ribbon’ ice cream and finished it all. Never did it in my entire 20 years of existence but I just couldn’t that night. Someone better get me a “Gold Medal Ribbon” for that moment.

Yes, while talking to my friend that night I said some horrible things about myself, I thought thoughts that haven’t come to my head in many years. Suddenly, I wanted to become cold hearted, again. It was violent, those couple of hours. I’m just glad I didn’t turn to my old habits and behaviour patterns. Wow, I’m crying, but you know what, I passed the test. It truly hurts but also makes me happy to know that my heart’s strength is growing more and more.

We both know more than anyone how much pain I can cause when I become cold.

You know Saturn, I was once the girl who used to openly tell her crushes that she liked them. I wonder where’d she go or what happened to her. Yeah…..., I was bold like that. Even after getting made fun of and embarrassed by that senior who I confessed my feelings to at the school farewell party, I still had it in me. Oh my goodness, do you remember how I cried my way back home? All because he hated that he and I almost shared the same name and because he found me ugly. My Mother Dearest really got mad at me for thinking so small of myself. She drilled into me that I am worth it and that “rejection is okay” because I have a long way to go in life. She told me that someday I might have to reject someone too and I started crying louder at that because I could only feel what a person who’s been rejected could feel at that time. My Mother Dearest laughed so hard at me during that moment!

In all honesty, it does sound like something out of a comedy show.

But I think I may have closed myself up, rather my heart, from feeling anything romantic. Especially after getting kissed last year by my first love, a love that grew when I first saw him in sixth grade. Funny how my Mother Dearest tells me he felt the same way about me but he denied having anything for me every time someone questioned him. It’s been exactly a year and four days since our kiss today as I’m writing this. Even after all that pain I went through, we remain each other’s oldest friends. We’ll complete 10 years of this friendship soon.

I’ve only ever fallen in love twice, thrice if I count my current situation. First two times, I confessed my feelings. I was rejected on both occasions; it did hurt me but I recovered. This time……I don’t know if I’m afraid of the rejection or… the fact that he won’t open up to me yet and that I’m slightly hurt by his doings.

I don’t know, maybe I’m just in my head. Imagining things.

How could someone like him possibly have feelings for someone like me, right? But then again, he was the one who reached out and actually initiated all the conversations despite me being mean to him and making him mad. I miss it, the texts and video calls. We had some fun too, if you know what I mean. Nothing extreme.

Since I can’t tell him how I actually feel about him, I guess I’ll just release the sentences here.

I…. have fallen in love, very hard. And yes, I love him.

Oh, that was liberating, I’m sobbing again. I really hope I gain back the strength to be so open about my romantic emotions again. I would love that kind of vulnerable yet powerful communication on my end.

Saturn, after Mother Dearest pushed me to talk to him, more men of his age, specifically 26–28-year-old men started to approach me. I asked her why she did it and she said that I needed it to build the courage to talk to men who might romantically approach me or even to make my personality blossom a little more. But the main reason why she pushed me was to open my heart a little more.

Guessing this was your work? You win. You finally got someone to pull on my heartstrings and most definitely there is a lesson that comes with it. Although I’m unsure of what the lesson is here, I’ll tell you what I learned from this.

I learnt not to go back to old patterns, not to grow cold or shut down my emotions when things aren’t going a certain way. I learnt to allow myself to fully feel and express myself even at my lowest. I learnt that it's okay to crave romantic affections. An old one that you taught me at a very young age: I learnt that being single for a long time is okay, entering your first relationship at an older age is also okay. I learnt that the more I look for stability within myself, it’ll help attract stable and self-aware people and relationships in my life. I learnt that it’s okay to let loose sometimes and have fun. I take things way too seriously, I admit.

Most of all, I learnt that opening my heart and loving someone so deeply, even if the affections may not be returned, is infinitely okay. It might hurt, but I’m grateful to feel the bliss of romance, even if it's one-sided.

Ultimately, I think, him and all the other men taught me many things. Age difference didn’t matter from the start anyways, because I chose parents who themselves have a 5-year age gap between them. But the 2 extra years did intimidate me a bit until Mother Dearest said “Really? You won’t talk to him for those 2 extra years? Come on, we both know how you talk, you’re my daughter after all!”. Not me getting called out by my own mother. Nice.

So yeah, not only did I learn these lessons but it also helped develop my point of view on certain things.

My Mighty and Grand Saturn, I leave it up to you to make me learn many more lessons on romantic relationships. But I do have a few requests of my own, which I demand in exchange for all the other tough lessons you will make me learn. You won’t ever hear me complain, I might rant to you emotionally but, I give you my word. Come what may, I accept your grand influence in my life with open arms.

I want you to soften my heart whenever necessary. I want you to remind me to put myself first when I give or sacrifice too much. I want you to remind me of my worth when I forget who I am at times. I want you to make me experience all kinds of love. Bring strict balance in my life when you see fit. Make me learn what ‘compromise’ is, the healthy way. Give me strength to communicate what really lies in my heart without being too harsh. Bring a person/partner into my life who sees no gender roles. Bring romantic love in my life where we both worship each other but also show tough love when necessary. Bring such emotional vulnerability in my romantic life that it leaves the two of us wanting more. Stability, within myself and my relationships of all kinds.

Now I know that this letter might sound like something that should be addressed to Venus, but I am yet to recognize her ways with me. I think I just have a habit of recognizing the harder influences in my life first. Clearly, one of them is You.

Museum of Mayhem Art Analysis

ahhh it’s finally here and it’s AWESOME. Lots of credit to @ifalnasminiatures for bringing this to my attention! Also credit to Hayder Hype for providing (nat zero six on gearbox forums) sources (Ashley Landry on twitter) in the description of his video because oh man it’s a lot

lots to talk about especially regarding the calypso twins so let us dive right in

tl;dr: tyreen has a weird red marking on her face in some old designs. i think troy used to be blind and missing his metal plates. more proof for my elpis/chemical sludge/lost legion theory that the twins are using said chemical sludge to give their followers psuedo-siren powers bc a dahl pumping station (hyperion pumping stations on pandora) but dahl had a presence on the moon

one of my favorites, it reminds me a lot of the Mask of Mayhem, but for villains.

Punk Girl is shown again twice, probably further proving she’s tied in with the CoV somehow

we also got some crazy looking villains such as

baby face. which is all kinds of extremely fucked up

this dude who looks like he could be a miniboss with the glasgow smile and the cool goggles

this guy who i legitimately thought was dr zed for a hot second there

the evilest brother?? pfft nahhh

this girl who seems like she could be a unique character with a baseball cap. wondering if maybe she’s related to Punk Girl in any way. What’s the verdict on the other band members? 🤔

this piece! very interesting to me

so, the very first thing i noticed is zane’s eye patch being on the other eye lol

amara’s tattoos are also gone, however that might’ve been for reasons similar to the japanese cover art of the game.

most interestingly is a point @ifalnasminiatures made and it’s that the calypso twins are actually palette swapped! you can see Troy is the one with the white hair and Ty is the one with the darker hair. which I think mayyy play into a few things we see later about the twins

we also see a tiny ship in the background. i can’t tell if that’s sanctuary-iii or the blue/yellow ship, it all blends together a lot due to the quality of the pic. but it is next to the calypso twins, which makes me want to believe it’s the blue/yellow ship we see with red markings all over it. you know this one from the mural of mayhem wallpapers

interestingly, i feel like the roses might have been a thing they just put in for the new cover art. haven’t seen hide nor hair of them across any of the pictures i’ve seen.

we got a lot of figures. out of them i most definitely recognized amara, salvador, maya, another salvador?, zer0, moze (maybe?), and axton. i thiiink one of them is maya as well, but im not 100% on that.

i can guess why they didn’t pick this one: it’s hard to tell who’s who. a lot of these poses make the silhouettes kinda hard to see and the merging together at the bottom makes things even worse. i do think it’s interesting there are some bl2 characters on here as well, but hayder hype mentioned they very well could be placeholders, and given that i can’t make out fl4k or zane, im inclined to believe him.

there’s a new red planet which hasn’t been shown off before, looks like a gassy planet kinda like jupiter, but interestingly it has this green crack in the side?

very reminiscent of pandora’s eridium scar. i am wondering if this is because this planet had a vault opened, or if it is tied to the Eridians at all. be interesting if it was their homeworld.

also i have no idea what the symbolism is in the homeworld destroying another planet but maybe we shouldn’t think about it too hard e_e

tbh, i thought this was elpis the first time i saw it due to the cracks, but i figured elpis doesn’t have like continents across its surface, just craters. and wayyy more cracks.

there’s also this redder planet here which i actually DO think is Pandora. if you squint real hard u can see the purple from the eridian scar. plus the color matches up pretty well with the pictures provided above.

there’s also these two bodies over in the corner where the light is coming from. i can’t tell what they’re supposed to be

i assume they’re maliwan? they remind me a lot of the maliwan drop ship things that fly overhead when you enter promethea

troy: missing his tattoos, blind in one eye, has a weird mark above his eyebrow. also, no metal bits!

Tyreen!!! with a red stripe across her left cheek going up to her eye??? no tattoos on her left arm as far as we can see, but that might be for marketing reasons (she’s also covering up part of her bicep). she’s also missing her coat and chains and wearing a different glove.

we also have a bunch of bl2 VHs taking up space. again i think hayder hype is right in that they’re simply placeholders. not much else to say, but

this trend of Tyreen having red markings on her face and Troy being blind in an eye (or both) actually continues through a fair amount of these posters!!!

more cover art. one of my least favorites again... i just think it looks like the psycho is puking out the VHs. also, seems to be an older version of the psycho mask.

fl4k seems to be less rendered than the rest of the cast? like they have less detail, especially on their coat

also you can see an older looking space shuttle up at the top, which reminds me a lot of the one we use in TFTBL to get to helios. except less caravanny and more rockety

the splatter also reminds me of siren powers, with the purple and the glitter. it’s cool that it’s showing a different shot than what’s behind it. maybe a hint to siren powers because it’s sort of like a portal.

tyreen seems to still have a mark on the left side of her face, im wondering if this ties into her scars at all? it doesn’t seem as prominent as the previous red mark.

Zane seems to have an actual eye patch instead of his more high-tech eye patch, which reminds me a lot of the leaked character concepts from like january i wanna say

amara seems to be dual wielding lol i wonder if originally that was going to be one of her 3 skills but then they were like “wait salvador. wait. nisha. FUC-”

also fl4k is being obscured by this weird saturn-like planet. let them be free!

moze is missing, the saturn like planet shows up 2 times total, and that blue/yellow ship is seen again behind troy

as for the purple stuff? you already know my theory that the twins are going to be using the chemical sludge on elpis to empower their followers. it could also just be straight eridium/slag. you know, like the testing from the WEP with bloodwing and even krieg. we’ll have to see. it would be interesting if they tied krieg into the story through there.

i do lowkey think it’s chemical sludge though, because some of it is actually glowing blue in places, you can see it clearly below amara’s feet. maybe some tie in to siren powers cuz they glow the same blueish color. who knoooows not i

i really like the 4 VHs standing at the base with the elongated shadows. very dark vibes from this tho, probably not suitable for the series as a whole. i can see why maybe they decided not to do it.

i wonder if we’ll see this giant psycho statue somewhere on pandora. it would certainly be a sight to behold.

also i kinda wish we had cloaks like the concept art shows. cloaks are cool

more sketchy art. this one is also kinda strange, i definitely get why they decided not to go thru with it.

possibly tie-in with the ‘mother’ imagery we get on the propaganda signs across pandora.

very bl2 like, im glad they didn’t stick with this. i like that they decided to change things up

troy seems to be blind and also missing his metal implants on his face. his jacket also looks a lot different, it looks more like tyreen’s with the spikes and stuff across it. we also can’t see his metal arm at all, tho we do see his sword! which looks a lot different, im glad they decided to revamp it to be more visually interesting lol

tyreen is more interesting to me. it looks like her right arm has like a silver coating over it? unless that is a metal arm as well. she also is wearing a different kind of glove. her tattoos are missing as well, but again, it’s probably because of the cover art. her scars also definitely seem to have reached her left cheek at some point.

zane also looks a lot different, tho amara, moze, and fl4k look about the same.

another shot of the ship, this one is definitely the blue/yellow one. there’s gotta be some significance with that, right? either we’re getting skins for sanc-iii, we’re going to be painting it a new color, or it’s a different ship.

one of my favorite ones out of all of them. it’s beautiful, i really wish they had kept it. Fl4k is missing but i assume they were meant to go next to Amara? i also think it’s interesting Moze is in the front, as I took Amara to be the leader this time around. Zane is also an older design, with the eyepatch back on his left eye again (starting to think this is an aesthetic thing lol) and a black jacket instead of blue.

We see the twins on the top. Tyreen has that mark on her face again, and Troy is the same as the last few covers.

We also see Maya, Zer0, and for some reason Brick? Which is weird to me considering we have a few other characters who initially feel much for important to the story (cough Lilith cough), but I’m not complaining.

the purple splatters again make me think this is a tie in to eridium/slag/elpis’s chemical sludge. i also like the logo being worked into the design instead of just thrown on top, i think that’s a nice detail

i couldn’t find a great shot of this poster which is a shame because it’s one of my favorites

a lot of baddies to go around on here. i love the dude up top, he reminds me of the Anchormen from the captain scarlett dlc in bl2!

i’ve been thinking and tbh i think the multiple planets thing was just an excuse for gearbox to go absolutely ham on the character designs/settings.

i mean why should they have to hold back all their medieval armor designs for another dlc like tiny tina’s? all their pirate/sea-fairing designs for a pirate dlc? fuck it! go WILD. i think they did, anywho

there’s also this post which... tbh i can’t make out much at all. again, seems like an older psycho mask design. it looks like there are characters in the splatter on the bottom left, but it’s very hard to tell who’s who, especially at this angle and image quality lol

if we get a better shot later on i may return to this piece and try to figure things out!

we also have this piece which is giving me huge ‘Happy Together’ vibes. very trippy

moze looks like she’s using an untextured atlas gun? dunno what’s going on with that tbh lol

i really like this one too. it’s cool. i get why maybe they wanted to go a little crazier tho, feels too simplistic for the MAYHEM vibe they’re going for.

we see a different looking blue/yellow ship flying away from the explosion. it seems to missing a lot of the parts that make sanc-iii so recognizable including the engines/wings

we can also see this art of what i think is Punk Girl, which is interesting to me because she looks to be doing something with her right hand. possible siren powers? maybe!

we also get a much cooler, bigger version of that maliwan ship people were talking about, with what look to be maliwan... eye bots? surrounding it. this is soooo fuckin awesome to me because it reminds me of a sailboat. and airships are fucking COOL

but something interesting is that i don’t think this ship was actually always maliwan

we got an A in the back here... for Atlas? i mean... you know it’s coming... the colors would match up. Yeahhhhhhh...

more interesting is that it actually looks like maliwan covered it up with their flags/tarps. i would not be surprised if this was claimed by maliwan possibly during the takeover.

im pretty convinced this is something on elpis mostly because the DAHL logo on the side. which again, they were on pandora yes but they were mining for iridium not eridium. if this was pandoran pumping stations, that would be hyperion.

i do think this is elpis. and i do think the twins are using the chemical sludge that mutated the lost legion into those fake siren things to give their followers superpowers.”holy holy holy” indeed.

this, plus the rakk wings on the psycho in the mask of mayhem are just convincing me more and more

Choices, decisions, or hell?

Oh, decisions need to be made? Let’s just put my brain in a blender for a few minutes, turn it to mush and let those tiny tits start caving in. Anxiety. Strikes. Again.

I’m that girl that won’t pick a restaurant, takes the longest exploring the menu and ends up getting her usual, then when she does venture away from her usual she regrets it in some form or fashion. Needless to say, I have never been great at making decisions. Just another day in Heidi’s world, having to make a choice that could make or break her existence.

If you’ve seen the show The Good Place with Kristin Bell, you would understand why I’d refer to the character Chidi as a kindred spirit. He is an ethical man who has essentially died and gone to the after-life because he couldn’t decide on something. Sounds like me in a nutshell, except I’m alive and hoping his fate is not mine (of course it won’t be). I look forward to the day when my over-analytical mind and emotions stop trying to control my life. Let me say that more mindfully, I look forward to the day that I am in full control of my mind and emotions.

“Saturn returns” has become a passing whisper more and more frequently as my 27th year approaches. For those who are unaware, “The first Saturn Return, which can happen between ages 27 and 30, is a bit like a cosmic bar mitzvah, quinceanera or communion if you will: a rite of passage welcoming you into your more mature role here on Earth” (read more here: http://astrostyle.com/saturn-return/). Another mention of this stage in life is called the “27 club” which references a group of popular musicians, artists, and actors who died during this year of their life. I say this with no adverse intention in mind but these two references are very real to me. Real enough to have anxiously awaited this coming year since I was 21. I’m challenged by the thought of losing myself to the pressure of life but I’m also excited to move through this time with the strength and poise I know I am capable of.

So. How does “Saturn Return” + “27 Club” have to do with my decision making? Hmm, that’s a good question and I believe I have an answer. It has a lot to do with my two previous blogs: first, about my recent health changes and second, about my longest relationship coming to an end. Luckily, I have quite a few things to live for and there isn’t a speckle of doubt that I’ll make it through the next couple of years. However, I feel as if I’ve hit a fork in the road with pretty much every aspect of my life. Therein prompting me to begin making very palpable decisions for myself, my daughter, and our pets.

There are infinite directions our lives can take (Lucky me!). We are like trees, growing, branching out, with infinite parallel realities to choose from. I don’t know if our lives are already written in stone or if everything can change on a whim. I like to think it’s all random, and that I’m not alone in this momentary chaos of feeling lost and unrecognized, this awkward feeling of being stuck or unhappy with myself for the choices I have made. I sit, wondering what I could have done differently to avoid being here, to avoid feeling this way. What can I do to change this in my favor? I’d go back in time, immediately.

Well Heidi, until Marty McFly and Dr. Brown show up at your door with a radio-active DeLorean let’s assume that we won’t be going back in time. However, to indulge my imagination a bit I figured I’d explore the moments in life that I would go back to. Get ready for some shit...

1st - I’d go back to 7th grade when that creepy boy in 8th grade left a nasty note in my locker about wanting to “fuck me”. I’d kick him in the balls and tell him I don’t appreciate the unsolicited disrespect and emphasize that he had no chance in hell with me!

2nd - I’d go to the moment I decided I wanted to lose my virginity, and change my mind! I would decide to save myself for someone who actually cared about me or even loved me.

3rd - I’d go back to the end of 10th grade when my parents forced me to try-out for cheerleading again when I didn’t want to. I’d give them a final hell no, and tell them that I was unhappy. I’d write them both a letter explaining that I wanted to be in art and theater classes instead.

4th - I’d go back to the end of 11th grade just to tell myself how beautiful I was and to teach myself some self-love.

5th - I’d go back to the day I quit my job as a gymnastics & swim coach. Instead I would call in sick, get my shit straight and save my money to live on my own.

6th - I’d go back to the day I enrolled in college and instead of staying in Texas, I’d go as far away as I could.

There are plenty more moments I’d change and just to clarify these are most definitely not moments I regret, nor pride myself on. They’re just moments that I wish I had given more time and care into. These are all moments that I rushed making a decision, moments when I wasn’t mindful of my own self-worth and in most cases decisions become stressful because I start feeling rushed.

Rushed enough to ignore things that make me feel uncomfortable, to order food that I’m skeptical about, to date someone out of convenience... the list goes on. Enough is enough. I’ve decided that this is no longer who I am. In every other area of life I’m quick firing, witty, and charismatic. So from now on, I will be implementing all of that and some dank ass patience into my new found power of decision making. Boom.

Sora Says: Super Bomberman R Sure is a Thing

Bomberlovelies! It’s your fruit-snack-loving neighborhood Sora here with some SBR stuff.

First off, I’m not sure how many people this matters to, and I suppose technically I’m practically a month late on this, but! I’ve been striving to keep the Base as spoiler-free as possible for those unable to play SBR for the time being. So, as you may have noticed, spoilers are noted and/or cut in the posts that they happen to appear in. I’m not sure how long to keep this up for; maybe six months to a year? What do y’all think? This is the first time I’ve ever had to be cautious about spoilers for a general audience, so I’m a little unsure on the etiquette.

Secondly, I’ve tested out the recent patch for SBR, and the controls are definitely improved. I had to use the not-quite-a-d-pad on the Joy-Cons the first time through, but now I can comfortably use the joystick to get around. I’ve been lost in the fields of Hyrule for the time being, though, so I haven’t yet had too much occasion yet to fully enjoy this update.

Thirdly, to the surprise of absolutely no one, I have Thoughts™ about this game. Not comprehensive ones, not coherent ones, and probably not even particularly interesting or unique ones, but Thoughts™ regardless. So here they are, spoiler-free: not so much a proper game review as it is me just bomberblathering into the void.

Super Bomberman R appears to be the result of what Bomberman used to be trying to score with what Bomberman could be. Unfortunately, they barely make it to first base, and on the way to second base they fall into a sudden rift in space-time that leads to the universe of Normal End TSA, a universe which could ultimately be considered responsible for that other reboot everyone knows about. This is a terrible metaphor from a terrible fan with terrible crack theories. That is to say, SBR should have been a triumphant return to form for the Bomberman series, but ends up being...a little less so.

For a loser like me, who properly came in during the Nintendo 64 era and had been super-stoked about the apparent return to that style of gameplay with the now-canceled Bomberman 3DS, the reality of SBR is once a golden promise and twice a leaden disappointment, a description which really shortchanges lead in its ability to shield us from bone-frying radiation. While obviously I was -- and still am -- relieved that Konami is actually making good-faith efforts to bring Bomberman to life again and save him from the nothing he’s become, I was much less thrilled with what they threw back to, and wholly unimpressed by the result from a gameplay standpoint. With mechanics that are pared down even compared to the game that inspired them, SBR completely failed to sell me on the old-school formula. It’s more impressive in terms of the rebooted aesthetics, with stronger visuals and writing, but the general execution of the reboot arguably comes at the cost of some of the nostalgic power that Konami wanted to harness.

Fans who lit their fuses with the SuperBomb games might feel differently than I do, of course. It’s entirely possible that maybe this game isn’t “for me,” that there’s something I’m missing about SBR that would trip the nostalgia wire in someone else. As a childhood fan of the Bomberman games for Nintendo consoles around the late 90s and early 00s, it’s difficult to talk about the flaws of SBR without making it sound like I’m just bitter that it’s not Bomberman 64 R(edux). I mean, I am, but that’s beside the point. Also I have yet to properly play Bomberman 64 so I’m probably not even a real N64 fan. In the cascade of sentiments that follows, though, I've done what I can to meet SBR on its own terms in order to argue that, even by the retro standards it draws from, it doesn’t live up to what it could or should have been. Conversely, there were things I quite liked about the game! And I’ve made my best effort to give credit where credit is due. Make no mistake: SBR had more pressure than other games I could name (like a certain legendary one...) to pull off a perfect 10 on balancing tradition with innovation. Both directions come with their high points and pitfalls, and fans will have differing opinions about how well Konami scored on either.

Personal grievances aside, I ultimately think it was important for Konami to first prove that they still had a handle on the bomberbasics, especially given the quirkier entries that got released in the lead-up to Hudson Soft being assimilated into the Konamiborg. (I mean, I liked Custom Battler Bomberman and think more people should check it out, but how did they even decide it was a good idea?) While I’ll contend that this game is maybe too basic, the overall choice to reference the SuperBomb series makes sense considering that Bomberman’s heyday was during his Super Nintendo days. (My gosh, have you seen the merch? The merch!!!) So in the end I can’t really blame Konami for using it as a springboard. I can only wish that they’d stuck the landing a little better.

The takeaway: Super Bomberman R is a more of a gilded lead pebble than a 24-karat star, but, like lead, it still has its uses and strengths. It’s a relatively decent effort by Konami to reintroduce him back into console gaming, a distinctive entry in Bomberman’s history up to this point, and a solid choice to start a revival with -- almost in spite of itself.

Hate the Game, Not the Player (The Game Already Hates the Player)

(I should note that I’m saying all this from the standpoint of having beat single-player once on Beginner mode. Aside from being a terrible fan with terrible metaphors and terrible theories, it also turns out I’m also a terrible gamer. The Terrible Tyrantress of Bomber Base: that’s me. So it’s entirely possible that some of my beefs with the gameplay are rectified in the two other difficulties, or in some other unlockable thing I haven’t done or heard of yet.)

How “pared down” are we talking, in regards to this game’s mechanics? When I began the initial round of wordbarfing, I initially wrote that Super Bomberman R was such a throwback that remote bombs don’t exist in it. Turns out that both Super Bomberman 3 (which appears to be the primary inspiration for SBR, considering that they share the same basic plot premise) and the original Bomberman game for NES featured them. Whoops. No Hearts or Louies/Tirras either, which means that Bomberman is back to the good ol’ days of being a one-hit wonder. Fair enough: that’s pretty old-school, right? We don’t need no stinkin’ heart meter in these parts. But let’s take a closer look at the powerups. SBR has a functional enough set comprised of Bomb Up, Fire Up, Fire Down, Speed Up, Power Glove, Boxing Glove, Pierce Bombs, and Rubber Bombs. But it’s quite clearly lacking when you compare it with SB3′s offerings. And for a game which actually translates your score into in-game currency for continues and unlocking multiplayer options (a.k.a the shit that 99.5% of bomberfandom cares about), it’s unfortunate that Konami decided not to include bonus items (which, again, were featured in both the original Bomberman for NES and Super Bomberman 3) to help boost your numbers. Additionally, the lack of Bomb Downs and Speed Downs/Sandals lowers some of the stakes of the gameplay. You gain points for every power-up you collect, so it’s not inconceivable to theorize that running into a Bomb Down or a Speed Down would result in you losing those points. (Admittedly, I’m not sure at the moment how Fire Downs function in the game from a score standpoint, since I’ve avoided them thus far.)

I can’t believe I had to satisfy my thirst for remote bombs with BotW. Unexpected perk of a Zelda game is unexpected.

The lack of item variety might not grate so much if the overall context of the gameplay were more diverse and/or expanded. SBR does a little better than its predecessors in introducing alternate stage objectives for each world, but I found that the ones for world 1 and world 5 were too similar, which is fairly glaring when you’re only looking at five worlds in total. Additionally, the objectives that requires you to find a set amount of certain objects don’t randomize their location, removing an element of challenge from the gameplay. The field enemies are generic and monotonous, with what seem to be only aesthetic variations across worlds (and movement speed across difficulties, as I understand it). You can sometimes take them out via bombing a support structure that collapses on top of them, which can be fun when it happens, but there aren’t too many opportunities to pull that off and not much incentive to do so other than personal validation. The Baroms/Balloms/Valcoms/no-one-cares-about-localization-consistency-with-Bomberman highlight my earlier point about SBR’s innovation at the cost of nostalgia: their flipped design is an interesting twist, but I admit I didn’t even realize what they were until someone pointed out their balloony nature. On the other hand, at least SBR also gave us the Hige Hige Bandits (technically they’re from the Saturn iteration of the games, but it was around the same era and they’re cute so I’ll let it pass), and you get the impression that the mecha forms of the Dastardly Bombers were absolutely made for 3D. Their arena fights feature some really smart AI as well, even on Beginner mode. (Though there are still sometimes...mishaps...) However, I’ve seen less-than-impressed comments about the rinse-and-repeat nature of their mecha fights, which further reinforce the dull repetitiveness that appears to be endemic to this game as a whole. At this point I would almost welcome a bonus stage of Pontans armed with just 1 Bomb, 1 Fire, and 1 Speed. While there are over 50 stages in the game, 1/5th of those are boss battles (if you count the arena battle and the mecha battle as two separate stages) and they overall go by quite fast.

Comments about the disparity between the dearth of game content with the game’s full retail price are further underscored when you consider that story mode’s main replay value appears to solely be in earning currency to unlock all the multiplayer goodies and custom antenna attachments. Not that replaying story mode for battle mode booty is anything new, of course. But at least something like Bomberman 64 also featured a way to unlock additional story mode content, and you were able to customize the full character instead of just the antenna. The setup reads like Konami trying to Stockholm players into liking a half-assed single-player misadventure. I’m a little concerned that SBR potentially demonstrates the modern limitations of Bomberman’s original arcade-based formula, i.e., the gridded, linearly-progressing stages. With the chance to reboot Bomberman for a new generation of gaming, Konami needs to do what the Zelda team did for BotW and sit down to figure out what is actually a legitimate convention of bombercanon, and what is a convention only because “that’s how it’s always been,” especially if it grew out of the technical limitations of the past.

I’m not gonna shut up about Zelda, okay. I was Zeldatrash before I was bombertrash.

In terms of multiplayer, well, we already know that Konami sorta bombed it a little out of the gate, given the lag issues for online play. But even at its core, the multiplayer experience doesn’t make the grade -- or at least as high of a grade as it should have for a series that has such a huge reputation as a party game. You can’t even argue that it’s just “going back to basics,” as SB3 at least let you choose whether you wanted to do an all-out Battle Royale or a Tag Match, along with offering item minigames to let players have a chance to start the following match at an advantage. On the other end of the spectrum, one of the selling points of the Switch is its ability to adapt to multiple setups for on-the-go or at home. It’s not hard to surmise that Konami wanted to get hitched to the Switch in order to promote Bomberman’s multiplayer capabilities. So why are the battle mode options aside from the stage selection so bare? Obviously we don’t yet have any sort of insight into the development process and timeline of SBR, but it seems like they should have at least blown battle mode out of the water given 1) the price they charged for the game and 2) how much downtime the franchise had. It’s not like they didn’t have any inspiration for it, either: all they had to do was look at Bomberman Generation and they’d be set to start the party. Online play does host some interesting features, such as ranked match-ups and the ability to create individual battle rooms for yourself and whoever you invite to fight things out with, but I’m not sure how this compares with something like, say, Bomberman Live. Someone more informed is going to have to pick up the slack. The point is, where’s my Reversi Battle, dammit?!

Even the Way I Do Subsection Headings is Cool (Spoilers: It’s Not)

The first surprising thing Konami did for the franchise this year was to announce an actual console game for it. The second surprising thing they did was to upgrade the aesthetics of the original in both visuals and storytelling. The third surprising thing they did was Bombergirl. That they bothered to introduce no less than eight protagonist characters, animate cutscenes with those characters in them, and have those characters voiced with (at least in Japanese) some all-star talent continues to astonish me, not to mention some of the little spoilery details they threw in. While I generally agree about how short the cutscenes are, the writers still managed to make the most of what they were given to work with. Each sibling gets their fifteen seconds of fame not by hogging the spotlight and leaving the rest of their siblings in the dark, but by sharing it and letting the personality dominoes fall where they may; notable moments for me are the ending cutscenes for world 1 and world 3. In this way, in spite of the large cast and the decidedly-less-large narrative space, no character feels too neglected. We’re not talking JRPG levels of writing depth here, not by a longshot, but it’s probably the most consistently entertaining writing I’ve seen from a Bomberman game.

(Granted, the Bomberman series likes its writing the way Zoniha likes her men, i.e. barely there. So it’s not like SBR had a high bar to clear.)

The colorful cutscenes directed by Poeyama and illustrated by Hideyuki Takenami burst with expressiveness and fun, and the redesigns for Bagular/Buggler and the Dastardlies are delightful extrapolations of their older looks. So it’s a mystery to me why Konami didn’t extend any of that good stuff to the actual gameplay graphics. I said in a previous post that the contrast between the realistic environments and the cartoony vibe of the characters would probably help with navigating the game world, but in actuality I found the environmental details too overwhelming and distracting, which when combined with the then-iffy controls led to more than a few deaths for me. (World 3, I would say I’ve got my eye on you, but I need to keep what’s left of my poor eyesight.) Additionally, while they’re well-rendered, they’re also on the generic side, which is doubly disappointing given the distinct nature of the cutscene visuals and the character designs. It’s not like there hasn’t been a 3D Bomberman game with overly-stylized gameplay graphics before (see again: Bomberman Generation, and to a lesser degree Bomberman Jetters), so why so standard? Especially since such a direction, again, arguably neutralizes some of the nostalgic charm of SBR. Who the hell hails the Bomberman games, especially the Super Bomberman ones, for their ultra-realistic graphics?

The animation only kinda makes up for the uninspired environments. Konami gets my applause for the unique walk cycles, victory poses, and idle stances, any one of which would have been more effort than I would have expected out of them. But they all have the same bomb-throwing animation that honestly barely qualifies as an animation considering how it feels like it lasts half a frame. I wouldn’t normally harp on something so nitpicky except that Konami’s own promotional efforts for the game made such a big deal of the UNIQUE PERSONALITIES!!! of each bombersib. If they were already going as far as to customize each character’s idle stance, it seems like such a gross oversight to not also customize the other basic movement associated with a Bomberman character, or at least give it a little more flair and presence. The enemies also just flop over and blip out of existence when they die, which aside from being unsatisfying in general also doesn’t do justice to the source material. I’m not asking for bloody gibs splattered across the scenery here (although that could be kind of funny if handled in just the right tongue-in-cheek sort of way), but watch a couple of minutes of gameplay from SB3 and you’ll see that along with featuring death animations in general, different enemies even have different ones. In short, despite some genuinely nice attention to detail -- let me reiterate that the designs for the Dastardlies’ mechas are pretty awesome -- the gameplay visuals generally don’t match up to the fun factor of the cutscenes, resulting in a slightly inconsistent feel for the game and (more importantly) some missed shots at recapturing the charms of the original.

Given the effort Konami has put into the upgraded aesthetics and narrative and the subsequent promotion focusing around that (yes, I’ve seen episode 2 of Bomberman TV and me and BDR are working on summarizing that; well, mostly BDR, really), it’s hard not to think that Konami was trying to cover up a manure mound with sheets of rainbow gold. Nevertheless, that same effort, along with some spoilery stuff, suggests the possibility of follow-ups in this particular iteration of the canon, which can hopefully only be a good thing. I’d still prefer a return to the more traditional Bomberman lore, but I don’t mind riding shotgun for this. I mean, shit, the scenery’s great.

The Rest is Still Unwritten (Because My Pen Ran Out of Ink and Pommy Ate My Spare One)

There are some other things I could kvetch about in this game (things I didn’t touch upon here: the English voice-acting and the music, particularly the menu tracks), but in the end, I’m still happy SBR exists, and I don’t regret shelling out full price for it. The awesome thing about modern gaming is that Konami is able to fix parts of SBR according to player demand via online patches, as mentioned at the top of this post, which also means that, theoretically, there’s room for DLC to address the lack of content. The recent releases of Bomberman games of VC indicates more official interest in the series again, while the direction displayed by SBR show promising experimentation and expansion of the canon. And the scale of the promotional efforts for SBR is clearly Konami putting on some serious gameface in the matter of making Bomberman relevant again. It’s like seeing the signs of the apocalypse on Opposite Day.

As of the time of posting, the third week of numbers is in for SBR, from both Media Create and Famitsu (via Game Data Library). No matter which metric you go by, SBR has broken over 50,000 copies sold in less than a month, which is on par with or beyond the lifetime numbers of many other Bomberman games. Super Bomberman R might be far from a perfect game, with some circumstances mitigating its impressive numbers, but it’s still one to respect.

Creon: First off rest in peace to this decade that got owned. From the phony fake feedback "they" have been reading this for the past several years and I can see people being bothered by it.
