RWBY Volume 8, Episodes 8-12
All caught up with RWBY now! (Except for the premium only episode.)
So, two things first: 1. From now on, my blog will no longer be spoiler free for RWBY! I don’t have premium access, so no spoilers for that, but beyond that, I might now reblog spoilers for everything that’s been released to the public. Blacklist “#RWBY spoilers” if you don’t want to see them.
2. I was going to ask what the spoiler policy in this fandom in general is when it comes to premium access. From what I’ve seen, Youtubers usually wait a week before uploading their reaction videos, which I appreciate – but here on tumblr almost no one seems to hold back. I saw a spoiler for “Creation” before it was released publicly. The day episode 13 was released for premium access, I had to unfollow people for posting untagged spoilers for it. And when I went into a RWBY-related tag for one second, I saw a really big spoiler that put me in a very sour mood because it also happened to be very aggressively worded against fans of a certain character (basically, along the lines of “I’m glad X bad thing happened to Y character because I hate them and their fans”). So, that scared the shit out of me and I ended up looking up more specific spoilers about what exactly happened because I wouldn’t have been able to sleep otherwise. So, from what I’ve seen, this fandom’s spoiler policy is just “fuck anyone who doesn’t have premium access” 😒. Always nice to see people being so considerate.
With that said, let’s get into my thoughts on episodes 8-12. Under the cut, because unlike some people, I try to be considerate of others who might want to avoid spoilers.
- So, the Hound really was a person. Specifically, a person with silver eyes and that’s probably what happened to Summer. THANKS, I HATE IT. This is exactly what I feared it would be and what I didn’t want it to be. (I don’t want Ruby and Yang to have to fight and kill their grimm-ified mom, that’s too sad, okay?)
- I love that Whitley really came through and came up with a plan for evacuating everyone! He’s a good bean after all! And that he managed to press that button on the computer before running from the Hound? Amazing.
- Willow Schnee being one hell of a mama bear and summoning a thing to protect Whitley was epic. She was so close to breaking down before that, but then her child was in danger and she just jumped into action right away. Protective mom instincts ftw!
- Blake’s talk about how she looks up to Ruby and how she herself lost the youthful optimism Ruby still has was SO sweet! (Also, Ladybug is an underrated ship/friendship and I really don’t get why people say they never interact? Have you all just forgotten volume 1 and how Bumbleby’s first meeting happened because Yang was trying to wingman Ruby who was trying to befriend Blake??)
- Penny fighting the virus from the inside was amazing, she did so well! I also loved seeing Nora encourage her (and echo Blake’s earlier words back to her).
- Unrelated to these episodes specifically, but I tried to think about who my favourite RWBY charactes even are right now, and I find it super hard to narrow down because I love so many of them, but if I tried to somewhat narrow it down, then (in no specific order because don’t ask me to also come up with an order): all of Team RWBY (though Blake is a personal favourite), Ilia, Penny, Salem, Cinder. (But then again, I also love Winter and Qrow and Robyn and... you get it, it’s hard to narrow down. Oh, and of course Pyrrha, but... you know.)
- “Witch” was honestly my favourite episode of the bunch. That one was just so full of epic stuff. (And now I’m wondering if Salem being one of my favourite characters has anything to do with my love for witches. I used to be obsessed with witches as a kid. In every story I read that had a witch, the witch was always my favourite character.)
- Yang and her team sure found a way inside that whale fast! Also, really handy that Ren’s semblance evolved just in time for when they needed it. But hey, I don’t want to complain about convenient plot stuff too much. Sometimes the heroes are allowed to have a little bit of good luck.
- Hazel listening to Oscar and deciding to get both him AND Emerald out of there was amazing! He really does have a soft spot for kids and wasn’t kidding about not wanting more kids to die – we love to see it! I also think it makes for an interesting parallel that Hazel decided to do this right as Ironwood was sending students to fight on the front lines and Marrow was calling it out.
- I really liked Ren telling Yang she doesn’t have to hide her fear behind jokes. Ren being able to see emotions is going to bring about so many more good moments, I just know it!
- Emerald and “Hazel’s” talk with Salem gets so much better when you know “Hazel” is actually Oscar – Emerald has gotten so much better at illusions and fooled Salem herself! That’s impressive!
- It’s really practical that Ren could sense Emerald’s fear. But also, the group really didn’t have the time to discuss if Emerald was trustworthy – they needed to get out of there asap.
- The way Salem spits out the word “semblance” when she talks to Emerald shows again that she not only underestimates these “new humans” and their powers, but also considers them inferior. It’s a nice little detail how just her tone when she says that word says so much about her worldview.
- Yang straight-up running up to Salem and blowing her up was epic. It didn’t last of course, but it was still a super bold and epic move. I’ve talked before about how cool Yang is and she just keeps getting cooler.
- Yang calling Salem out was amazing and epic, too! And when she referred to Summer Rose as “my mom” that made me tear up just a bit 😢. (I really don’t like Salem’s smile when she says “her again”, though. I don’t want grimm-ified Summer, I really don’t want it, okay? keep it far away from me where I won’t have to see it.)
- I’m a bit sad about Hazel’s death, but it was a really fitting end for his character and a really cool way to go out. The way he looked at all of those kids in danger (proving again that that’s what it’s about for him), whispered “No more Gretchens” to Oscar, punched Salem in the face as she was about to hurt Emerald, injected all of those crystals into his skin (which looked epic, by the way), told Emerald to go, fought an epic fight against Salem and then grabbed her and set himself and her on fire, burning her like a witch – it was epic stuff! RIP Hazel, you died as a hero and went out in an incredibly epic way!
- Hazel’s sacrifice must have been super tough on Emerald. He died protecting her (and JOYR) and it worked. She got away from Salem, but only because someone else, a friend, died for her. Not only must it be awful for her to lose Hazel, she probably also blames herself. (And, as I’ve seen others point out, it was probably the first time in her life an adult did something to protect her. Wow. Someone get this girl therapy, please.)
- The whale getting blown up was an absolutely epic moment. From the music to the cinematography, I loved everything about it. (That said, I will miss the whale. RIP coolest villain lair ever.)
- I loved Watts’ speech to Cinder – and I’m saying this as someone who became a huge fan of Cinder this volume. I love her, but I also love roasting her, and a lot of what Watts said was stuff she desperately needed to hear. I honestly didn’t even like Watts before that moment, but that speech might have made me like him just a tiny bit. The way he just laughed when she dangled him from a building, the way he spelled it out for her that her methods haven’t been working and threw her failures in her face, the ending with calling her “a bloody migraine” – Like I said, I’m a fan of Cinder, but that was glorious and cathartic and beautiful to witness. But what makes it really perfect is Cinder’s reaction: The fact that you’d expect her to kill him or at least scream at him, but instead she spares him and just sits down and cries. I really love what they’ve been doing with Cinder this volume and that they’re finally showing her as someone way deeper than just a power-hungry villain.
- In general, let me quickly talk about Cinder, because even without having seen the last two episodes I can already tell you that she’s my standout character / favourite character of the season. (It was Ilia for Volume 5, Salem for Volume 6, Penny for Volume 7 – and now it’s Cinder.) I said back in my post about Volume 5 that I wish they’d do more with her because after becoming rather interesting in Volume 4 they just went back to making her a pretty flat villain – and I officially have to eat my words and apologize to RoosterTeeth right now! This volume proved to me that they know what they’re doing with Cinder and explained so much about her. I’m sorry for ever doubting the writing. I now want to go back and rewatch the whole show while paying more attention to Cinder and I can’t wait to see where her arc goes from here (yes, I want an eventual redemption, and what about it?). This volume is obviously setting up something big for her – I just have no idea what it is. And at the end of the day, she’s still the Maiden of Choice. She’s the key to the Beacon relic, and that’s going to become important eventually.
- Oh, and can I mention, just by the way, that I think Cinder looks amazing? I don’t understand all the people who say they miss her red outfits when this is clearly her best look yet. The black eyepatch, the cape, the earrings, the short hair, the high boots, the shorts instead of a dress, all the black – this is her absolute best look, period.
- I’ve also noticed that the scene between her and Watts is the first time Cinder has referred to Penny by name. She’s always referred to her with phrases like “some toy” or “Polendina’s creation” before, but this time she just called her “Penny Polendina”, then “Penny” again, and asked Watts how she’s supposed to take Penny’s power “if she’s dead” (not “destroyed”, which is what Watts said, but “dead” – something you say about a person, not a machine). I think somewhere down the line, Cinder has started to see Penny as a person and respect her as the Winter Maiden. Maybe it’s because of how Penny won the fight at Amity, or maybe (though this might be wishful thinking on my part) it’s because Penny questioned why Cinder serves Salem and showed her and Emerald mercy.
- Also, side-note: While I loved Watts’ speech, it sure is bold of him to call Cinder entitled when his own villain origin story is getting overlooked for a science project.
- Neo is an amazing little troll and I love her. From stealing the lamp and skipping along the ruins of the whale happily to those texts to Cinder, all of her moments were brilliant and hilarious.
- Some characters not just forgiving Emerald is totally fair and realistic. But, as I said before (and as Oscar also points out), they don’t have to. People think a “redemption” – or let’s just call it switching sides instead of using such a loaded term – has to include everyone’s forgiveness, but it doesn’t. If Yang and Jaune never want to personally forgive Emerald, that’s okay. They don’t need to forgive her to recognize that she’s changed and work with her. And, as Oscar and Ren point out, Emerald’s abilities would be very useful to have on their side. So, personal feelings are fine and all, but right now they don’t have the luxury to dismiss a potentially very useful ally. (And same for Oz, by the way. It’s fine if they’re still mad at him, but they also need his help.)
- Also, have I already said that I’m very happy for Emerald? Because I’m very happy for Emerald for getting out of there! (Mercury’s and then Cinder’s redemption next, please!)
- F*ck Harriet for trying to get Winter in trouble for letting JYR go. I’m hating her more every second. And then she seriously said “Who cares?” about Ironwood’s plan to nuke Mantle? She’s the most unlikable of them all.
- Everyone’s reunions were so sweet! I loved Ruby and Yang hugging 😭. And Yang cupping Blake’s cheek and their forehead touch had me all 🥰 🥰 🥰.
- After he threatened to nuke Mantle, I hope we can all agree that Ironwood is a straight-up villain now. The most infuriating part is that he didn’t even have to do anything! Whitley and Weiss had figured out a way to save everyone in Mantle and the SDC ships to evacuate people were already there. All Ironwood had to do was let them evacuate everyone to Atlas, and then Penny would have opened the vault willingly and Ironwood could have used the staff to raise Atlas as planned. Problem solved! He should have just sat there and ate his food – but he was so pissed about things not going his way (or maybe he just genuinely hates Mantle that much) that he thought sabotaging the rescue plan and threatening genocide was a better option.
- I loved Marrow’s arc in these episodes and how you could tell more and more that his conscience was making him turn against Ironwood. First he questioned Winter when she was going to nuke the whale before JOYR were back, then he seemed shocked when he thought they were dead, then he tried to talk sense into the other Ace Ops after Ironwood’s ultimatum, and then he straight-up called out Ironwood himself. That last one was dangerous though, and he was lucky Winter was quick enough to jump in and pretend to arrest him, because Ironwood was going to just shoot him in the back.
- Speaking of, I wonder how long Winter has been planning to double-cross Ironwood. How long was she already disagreeing with him, but waiting for the right moment to make a move? Either way, I’m glad she was there to save Marrow.
- The Renora confession scene was so sweet and got me a little choked up 😢. I’m glad they sorted out their issues and told each other how they feel. But like I said before, I think Nora’s arc of trying to find out who she is without Ren is really good and important and Ren respecting that was really good and important as well. It was just a very wholesome scene. Also, I like that we got a little bit more backstory for Nora (her mom abandoned her? that’s awful), and Jaune awkwardly leaving the room was hilarious.
- Robyn telling Qrow he’s a better Huntsman than Clover because he chose to do the right thing was a really important moment for Qrow, imo. (And just a side-note: I’m sure most Fair Game shippers are pretty chill – and I’m a strong believer in ‘ship and let ship’ – but a certain subset of them is starting to get on my nerves with how they ignore Clover’s canon character and story (acting like he would have rebelled against Ironwood if he were alive as if the whole reason he’s dead wasn’t precisely because he cared more about Ironwood’s orders than doing the right thing) and how they make every new plot point about their ship somehow (Oscar’s semblance? Better be a time-travel thing so Clover can come back. Staff of Creation? Better be able to bring people back from the dead so Clover can come back.) It’s so annoying.)
- Yang and Ruby’s talk about their mom was really intense. Ruby’s been holding all of these feelings in for so long, so seeing her say out loud what we’re all fearing (that Summer was turned into a Grimm) and seeing both her and Yang break down over it – that was a lot. I loved seeing Yang comfort Ruby and tell her that her plan for Amity wasn’t useless. Their sisterly bond is so sweet.
- Penny asking Ruby to kill her was another really intense moment. The look on Ruby’s face in that moment really said it all. Ruby has been through so much, has lost Penny before, so hearing that request – even though they fortunately didn’t have to go through with it – must have still been a lot for her.
- I really loved Emerald’s cute “newly reformed villain” moments. (“You guys have been getting your asses kicked… some of that my fault” & “I’m just going to be super pissed if you all finally decide to give up the moment I switch sides.”) I’ve said before (in my She-Ra posts) that my favourite part of any redemption arc is the “former enemies, now awkward around each other” stuff, so this was right up my alley!
- “The girl who fell through the world” was referenced twice now. Between that, the image of everyone falling in the opening, and the lyrics “sometimes it’s worth it all to risk the fall”, I’m going to predict that someone – most likely all of Team RWBY – will fall into that void and potentially end up in a different world.
- The group’s plan to defeat Ironwood, stop the bomb, and get to the vault was amazing all-around. I love the parts Emerald and Winter got to play in it, I love how we saw the plan’s execution before seeing how they came up with it and I love how everyone got to help, even the Schnees and Klein. I also love that the hole Oscar blasted through the ground of Atlas became relevant again.
- The design of the vault and the door are really nice and now I wonder what the other two are going to look like.
- Saving Penny like that was super risky, but they really were out of options. Just the fact that Ruby had to be quick enough to use her semblance and get to the staff before the virus kills Penny… jeesh, that was close.
- Ambrosius is a super fun character! I love that he looked at Penny and said “I’d love to meet whoever did this.” Also, the staff seems more useful than the lamp. The lamp only lets you ask three questions per century, while the staff can be used as often as you want – as long as you’re okay with whatever it previously created disappearing.
- I honestly still don’t completely understand what Penny is now. Is she meant to be human now? Or is she just a being made up of pure aura? How does this work? Ambrosius only created the copy that destroyed herself, so what’s left is Penny’s aura – but she somehow also has a body now? I guess we’ll find out more about what exactly this means later.
- Also, while I wasn’t sure how I feel about this decision re:Penny at first, now that I’ve thought about it for a bit, I think it works. It fits with the Pinocchio story, and I like that they didn’t phrase it as “she’s a real girl now”, but as “this is the girl who’s been in there all along”. Also, Penny saying “wow” after hugging Ruby and then going on a hugging spree was adorable.
- Watching “herself” self-terminate must have been really traumatic, though. Even if that copy was just a robot, it was still a disturbing scene.
- Who shut down communications in the middle of Jaune’s broadcast? I’m assuming it was Cinder, Watts and Neo.
- The whole dimension with the doorways that Ambrosius created looks amazing. (A while before watching this episode, I wondered if Raven could theoretically save Atlas by getting everyone to safety with her portals. It might not have been Raven, but I’m glad I was at least onto something.)
- “Do not fall.” So, about that… they’re all falling in the opening, (and we referenced “the girl who fell through the world” twice now), so I don’t have a good feeling about that. Also, Watts has been dangled from somewhere high twice now, so the third time has to be when he actually falls down.
- And Cinder is there to ruin the plan because of course she is.

RWBY VOLUME 8 EPISODE 10 SPECULATION AFTERMATH!!!
SPOILERS!!!
SPOILERS!!!
SPOILERS!!!
Ugh!!! 😩 Do you know how much of a pain it is to work around trying to watch a RWBY episode when it comes out and manage a job with a 12 hour shift?? It SUCKS!!! I wasn’t able to watch the episode until late late Saturday night because I was too exhausted to stay awake to watch it and then had to go back to work the next few days!!! Sigh.....it doesn’t matter......BECAUSE THIS EPISODE WAS SO AMAZING AND STUNNING THAT NOW I DONT GIVE A S*** ABOUT THE LONG HOURS!!! 😆 Welp....enough about my lack of sleep, let’s get right into the Aftermath!!!
-(When The TinMan Loses “Heart”) Well I’m glad I got this portion of the episode somewhat right from my speculation 😏. I’m glad we are finally getting a continuation of Qrow and Robyn’s story arc for this volume and it looks like it’s heading towards its climax when they finally meet the general.
Speaking of which......Sweet Cream On A Ice Cream Sandwich 😆 Whoever directed those portion of Ironwoods scenes deserves an award because those were GOOD!!! The tension in the air when he speaks, the dread of wondering what he is about to do, the conveniently placed light shining down upon him as he delivers his ultimatum, all of it had me at the edge of my seat when I was watching it and I loved it! Now unfortunately I know that there are fans of Ironwood that are disappointed with how things are going for him so I just want to say my piece and my stance on his character so there won’t be any confusion in the future. When Ironwood was introduced in the series back in volume 2 I have always assumed that he would eventually become an “antagonist” to Team RWBY. CRWBY has conveyed that well enough for me through out the series that seeing what’s transpiring right now is of no surprise to me. Now it’s important to note that I am not going to call Ironwood a “villain”, but instead an “antagonist”, because the writing back in volume 7 has made me believe that there is chance of him being redeemed in the future. His character for me has always been of someone that fully believes that to get through a situation that they must do it “their way” and that there in no other alternatives. After coming face to face with the reality of Salem and her immortality he is now walking the same path as headmaster Leonardo did and that Fear is gripping him from listening to others. But after watching volume 7 I believe that there may be chance to get through to him and make him see reason because he is a good man under all that metal. Words alone were enough to make him understand before Salem’s arrival but now knocking some since into him is the only way to make him see reason.....and I believe Qrow may be the one to do it. Question now is.....will he knock some sense into the tin-man before vengeance grips his mind and ends up killing him instead? We will have to see......
-(“A few more Tricks Up Its Sleeve”) Ok....In my speculation post I made a prediction of how the story would continue after Oscar releasing the Long-Memory’s power because I thought it would be just destroying Salem and Hazel only. BUT Apparently it was enough power to create a huge blast to destroy not only Salem and Hazel, but the Whale and surrounding Grimm!?!? 😳 HOLY S***!!!! That whole sequence was honestly amazing and yet another part of the episode that I found aesthetically pleasing!!! Not only that but the aftermath with the fog and debris after the explosion surrounding the city as the sun rises was great as well. Oz wasn’t kidding when he said that the cane had a few tricks up it’s sleeve and to finally know that it can store up “kinetic energy” is an interesting way for CRWBY to put about it. I am disappointed that my prediction was wrong but it’s given me new things to think about for the story to go forward with so I admit defeat yet again with my tin foil hat on and a smile on my face 😁.
-(A Remedy For A Bloody Migraine) This Scene was Amazing and much needed after dealing with Cinder’s shortcomings after Beacon for so long. Christopher Sabat will always be a win for me to when a voice actor conveys anger and sarcasm at the same time in a character they are playing. I was honestly expecting Cinder to drop Watts to his death after his rant but seeing her drag him back and tearfully accept the truth of his words has boldend my view of her characters growth as a villain going forward. The “Power trip” and presence of her believing she’s better then everyone has become a crutch in her character for some time and now there is finally someone telling her straight up of her failures to her face and I’m honestly quite glad it’s Watts. These two has always had disdain between each other since volume 4, so to see how this scene plays out has me wondering if we may see a change in not only Cinder going forward as a villain but in also how Watts works with her in future volumes. 😊Also I gotta love the short scene involving Neo texting Cinder about the lamp. Neo is a loveable little s*** but it’s funny to know that Cinder is the same when taking pictures of someone, just to make a contact profile for them lmao 😆.
-(Reunion) After being separated from each other since episode 1 of the volume, it is really nice to see them back together again. I also loved the music in the background when the scene was playing out, especially when the chorus hit during the bumblebee scene. I am bit disappointed that no one commented on Oscar’s terrible condition yet but seeing Emerald all of a sudden pop up is understandably a good reason to pause rational thinking lol. I will say though that I have a pretty good feeling that the next episode will address about Oscar and many other things between certain characters that I have been waiting for, so I am excited about that.
-(Ultiamtum) With Salem momentarily gone it is now time to deal with Ironwood and to what eventually I believe will lead to the staff of creation. Things are now heading towards the climax of the volume and Ironwoods “ultimatum” may resurface some issues that were addressed back in episode 1. There is no doubt the heroes will have to make a tough choice between saving thousands of lives or saving one friend and whatever they choose to do I believe will form more division between the heroes. To whom ever will be conflicting about the ultimatum will undoubtably make us the audience have issues going forward in the story on whose in the “right”........so yeah be prepared for that upcoming storm of emotions lol 😓
Episode 10 of Volume 8 is by far the most aesthetically pleasing in the story and it has built up some interesting plot points for us to wonder about going forward. So Until The Next Episode......BUH-BYE!!! 😆😆😆😆

Eri’s First Time Meeting Yuta
[12:04am]
"Ten, what the hell did you get me into?" I asked, looking around at the leather, PVC, velvet, and lace clad partygoers. This was my first time ever going to a BDSM party and I had no idea what to expect. Some people were paired off, partaking in spanking, whipping, caning, you name it, while others indulged in their voyeuristic nature. Dozens of others were making out and groping one another while on the road to getting drunk. Down the hall I could see rooms with little occupied signs hooked on the front. I could only imagine what was going on in there.
"You need to get some more experience. You're still a little too green for me but you're getting there." Ten wrapped his arm around my shoulders and kept me close. "You're not scared are you?"
"Scared?" I shook my head and turned away from seeing someone's bra drop to the floor. "Just a little nervous I guess. A lot of people are starting to get naked."
"We're all consenting adults here. Being naked isn't a big deal. If you want we can rent out one of the rooms later?" He gave me that devilish and sadistic smile that always appeared when it was play time.
"Slow your roll, Ten. The nights still young and I still need to get used to this."
I felt his fingers dig into the back of my neck and force me to look up at him. "What did you call me?"
I swallowed hard and realized that I was in trouble for not calling him by his proper title. It hadn't been long since I discovered this side of myself and there were plenty of times where I slipped up. I would get punished, sometimes gentle, most times extremely rough so he could brandish my mind with the consequences of my actions. There were so many rules and things to keep up with it was overwhelming. I didn't understand certain things and in that aspect he was my mentor, slowing down and helping me figure out if I liked a particular kink or not. Ten had the capability of being patient though it wasn't really his forte.
"S-sorry, Sir." I said softly. He gave me a small nod, letting me know that I had satisfied him and it was exactly what he wanted to hear. That was one of our teaching moments.
"There's a bunch of stuff to do around here, just ask." He continued without a hitch. "I'm supposed to meet up with my roommate but I have no idea where he went off too."
"Your roommate? I didn't even know you had one. I thought it was a single room." I said.
"It mostly is, though we share a bathroom. That's how they're connected." He dropped our conversation in favor of looking around to spot the familiar face. I didn't want to wander by myself and hoped to God he wouldn't leave me. I clutched onto his mesh shirt and pressed myself to his side. He must've taken pity on me because he placed a kiss on my forehead and tapped my shoulder. "This way. I think I know where he might be."
Ten led me up a grand staircase, weaving through the clogged space. The crowd was making me even more nervous and was chipping away at my social anxiety. It only made me cling to him even tighter, not letting him go for even a second. When we arrived at the top of the stairs it gave way to a large open balcony. It wasn't as crowded as the downstairs area but rather more orderly with single file lines of people waiting to partake in the activities. On one side there was a massage table where someone was laying face down with glass orbs resting against their back. A flame danced over the top of the glass and I almost cringed. What in the world was that?
"It's called cupping." Ten said as he must've noticed my weirded out expression. "It was used as a medical practice before but now most people like it for the marks it leaves behind and the sensation." He pulled me towards something I was more familiar with.
There was a wooden set up that was large enough to weave someone within the confines of decorative rope knots and have them suspended a foot or two off the ground. I perked up instantly when I saw a gorgeous, mostly naked, woman swinging slightly and flushed with happiness. Rope had been a high point of curiosity and I had been dying to try out some more complicated ties. "Can I do that, Sir?" I asked, excitedly.
"I knew you would want to. And look, it's exactly where I knew Yuta would be." Ten waved at a taller guy with shaggy deep auburn hair and a 1000 watt smile that made my heart feel like it was going to burst. It was like he was the human embodiment of the sun, radiating warmth and passion, infecting everyone around him. To say he was gorgeous was an absolute understatement but I couldn't find any word in my flittering mind that would compliment him enough. When Ten joined up with him I stood behind, not sure what I should say or do. Beautiful men made me shyer than I normally was. It had even taken me awhile to even open up to Ten because he was a stunning model and I hadn't really been out on the dating/hook up scene since my relationship ended. Meeting Ten was an act of fate (aka Tinder) and it had been a few months since then. Now that this Yuta had come into the picture I was curious enough to see if I could get with him too. I just couldn't make the first move or my heart would dissolve as soon as it hit my stomach.
"What's up?! I was wondering when you'd come!" Yuta said.
"We just got here not too long ago. I was trying to find you and figured you'd be by the rope." Ten replied.
"I'm helping my buddy out tonight since so many people lined up and it takes awhile to load them. Who's this?"
My head shot up as the attention was brought to me. "This is Eri, the chick I was telling you about."
"Ahh, the famous curious kitten, Eri. Glad to finally meet you since Ten won't shut the fuck up about you." Yuta chuckled.
"What? Really?" I was kind of stunned at the admission.
"Oh yeah, he likes to brag about how you're into everything and he's turning you into the 'perfect little sub'."
"Oh, gee thanks. I'm not that much of a sub." I rolled my eyes and nudged Ten in the ribs with my elbow.
"Well she can be a bit feisty and definitely a brat. You know I like a challenge." Ten dove towards my cheek, making obnoxious playful kisses at me. I shoved him away, smushing my hand against his face.
"Cut it out, weirdo.” I grunted.
“Yuta, can you watch her? I’m gonna see if I can sneak some drinks for us.”
Yuta nodded. “Just tell Ronnie it’s for me. He’ll do it.” Ten pushed me towards Yuta before leaving me stranded. I had no idea what I should say to him or even if I should asked to be tied up. Luckily, he beat me to the punch. “Want to try it?”
I looked at the line of people behind me. “I can go to the back of the line, I don’t want anyone to be mad.”
“I’m in charge, I do what I want. Come here.” It took a bit of time to untie the woman who was caught in Yuta’s web but once he was done I was placed in the center of the support beams and his slender fingers worked over me. I felt my entire body flush as he stood so close, commanding me to turn and move when needed. Before I knew it, he was on his knees, sliding the rope between my thighs. I looked down at him and he winked flirtatiously as he secured the knots. “Ten ever tie you up?”
“A little but not as extensive as this. He just normally ties my arms and legs down. I’ve always wanted to try shibari though.”
“Well I’m the right person to come to. Ready?” He gave a tug on a few knots to make sure they weren’t going to come loose then grabbed the ends of the rope that would hoist me up. I nodded, still a bit nervous as my feet were swept from under me and the ceiling lights were the only thing in my line of sight. I closed my eyes quickly as I felt my body start to swing gently from the momentum. My stomach lurched a bit, not out of fright but something similar to the thrill and adrenaline you feel before hitting the drop of a roller coaster. It made me smile and settle into a place of peacefulness. When the swinging slowed I opened my eyes and saw Yuta above me. “How was it?”
“It was so cool. This is amazing! I want to do it again!”
He started working me free, almost pressing his body flush against mine. "If you want to try it again you can come to my room next time." He whispered lowly in my ear. I tensed beneath his touch as his hands slid over my stomach, over my hips and under my thighs under the guise of removing the rope. I swallowed hard and fumbled free as he made me an incompetent mess, almost tripping over myself.
"Oh, um...I'll ask Ten if I can."
Yuta laughed and rolled his eyes. "Dude, Ten has people in and out of his room all the time. You're not his only sub. He wouldn't care if we play together." He nodded towards a man that was coming towards us, presumably to switch shifts. "C'mon, I'll take you upstairs."
"What's upstairs?" I asked as he grabbed my hand and lead me away from the rope set up.
"Peace and quiet."
It was better than being stranded, especially since I didn't know anyone else here. We went up a few flights until we reached a hall that had absolutely no sound coming through from the party below. He lead me to a white door and opened it, giving way to a small room with toys set up all around. I found myself anxiously tugging and twirling the hem of my skirt around my fingers, unsure of what to expect. This was a new person that I didn't know with clearly more experience than I had. He could take control in an instant and I would be at his mercy.
"So, besides rope, what else do you like?" He sat on the loveseat that was against the wall and patted the space beside him. I sat down keeping as much space as possible between us. "C'mon, I don't bite that hard."
I nibbled my bottom lip and scooted closer to him. "Are we gonna…?"
"Not if you don't want to but that's why I asked what you liked first."
"O-oh, sorry. I'm still not used to…"
"I know. I've had a few newbies before. Trust me I got you." He smiled and tucked a stray curl or two behind my ear. "Well?"
"Oh, right! Well, uh, obviously getting tied up. Ten and I have been working on anal-" I darted my eyes away in case he somehow thought that it was weird but mostly because I was embarrassed. "Um, gags are fine, orgasm denial- I have a love/hate relationship with that one. We did blood play once but it didn't end so well. Choking, biting, spanking, all those usual things."
"Have you tried pet play?"
"Where you like wear cute stuff and crawl on the floor like a cat or something?"
He chuckled. "Yeah, something like that."
I shook my head. "No, not really. But I think I'd make a cute cat."
"You really, really would." Yuta leaned in a bit closer to me, leaving only a few centimeters between our lips. "Are you up to try a few things with me? I'll only be as rough as you want me to be, kitten."
I looked at his lips that were now curled in a smirk then moved to his eyes that were full of mischief. His hand rested on my thigh, slowly creeping its way up to tease beneath my skirt. My heart raced as if it was going to burst out of my chest but I took a leap of faith and crashed our lips together in a heated clang of desire. I had no idea what Yuta could do and I was scared, nervous, and ever so eager to learn all at the same time. I guess I was a curious kitten after all.

The fights were so amazing! I can already hear the bumblebee's crying out in joy! Plus I'm starting to think. The plane is crashing. Oscar and Maria are on it. Oscar semblance time? Plus thank god they allowed oscar to contribute yes!
Yoooo! I gotta give hella mega props to theCRWBY for this episode. Heck for this season as a whole to be honest in termsof the combat animation. There is no RWBY Critic who can’t admit that the fight animations haveimproved tremendously this season. I also have to give props to my people---whoever the storyboard artists for RWBY V6 were ---I need to praisethem because the staging of the fights---thecamera work and the way how the characters moved on screen during the fights.
Storyboarders make the visual blueprints for these episodes in collaboration withthe animation directors, animators and series directors to make the magic cometo life on screen. That is some beautiful stage work for this episode! I couldwatch the JNR_QROW vs Mecha Cordo fight on repeat because the shots man. Iloved how dynamic the shots were in that fight with how it transitioned between thedifferent team factions. One of my favourite shots was where when Cordo firstfired missiles at Ruby and we got to see Ruby manoeuvring through the projectiles, jumping from missile to missile with her semblance. That was super cool! Ifreaking love this shot! Absolutely boss!
Tumblr media
I looked like something straight out of avideogame cutscene. I actually laughed when Ruby compared it to a videogame to a confusedOscar because that’s how it felt like. Speaking of Oscarand videogames, clearly after this season is done, Ruby hasto pull Oscar in on one of those team buildingexercises she talked about in V6 C1 because clearlyour boy needs to be exposed to the world of games. Rosebudsbonding over playing videogames together andRuby teaching Oscar all about them videogames with the final bosses and allthat shizz. I want it. I need it!
Tumblr media
Also…why is anyone not talking about that stupendous Renora moment where Nora is all like:
“…You get back here with my man!”
Tumblr media
Oooh Nora I love you so! Only you could pulloff that line and make it sound both bat shit crazy and badass at the same timewhile firing explosive grenades at a giant robot. Waiting for the day where we can get a possible RoseGardenparallel to this moment where an enemy grabs Ruby and Oscar is all like “Get you paws off my girlfriend!” while firing magical lazer beams from his magic wand cane.
MyRosegardening heart; forever wishing and hoping and praying!
One of my favourite shots was when Jaunenoticed Cordo going for Nora and we get this nice upwardangle shot of him running across the screen towardsNora while we’re also watching Cordo readying herself to fight. Now THAT shotis straight out of a game. I felt like I was watching a videogame playthroughwhere you’re controlling the character run across the screen but you also havethe camera controls set in a way where you can see the enemy preparing tostrike.
Tumblr media
Beautiful! As an aspiringstoryboard artist myself, I want to study this episode so muchbecause I just loved and appreciated how the fights were staged. Amazing, fantastic work from CRWBY! I dare anybody to say anything bad about thisepisode and its fights because it was practically flawless in its execution---at least by my bias.
Also, I don’t know who was the animatorbehind the Adam vs. Yangand Blake fights respectively but those were super amazingtoo. Like wow! The CRWBY animators weren’t playing this season. Those twoseparate fights with Adam were also well-staged and well-choreographed withamazing camera work. One of the complaints I heard regarding the fights sinceV4 was that it fell flat in comparison to Monty’s work from V1-V3. After twoseasons, I think it’s worth saying that the CRWBY animators have officiallyfound their footing with animating fights in Maya. It actually reminded me ofthe old school Monty fight scenes but with their own new spin on them. Now theharsh Critics can finally shut up about the fights in RWBY not being the samewithout Monty comments. As you rightfully said m’friend, the fights today wereamazing and the CRWBY should feel proud. I can’t wait to see the actual finalenow. I want more fights!
I especially need to see Oscar fightfor this finale! I mean I’m glad that Oscar got tocontribute in some way to the battle by being the extra eyes in the skies.Buuuuut you know me! I wanna see my baby boy kick some ass for this finale andI would rather if it’s as himself and…notOzpin. I mean, I expect Oscar to get in contactwith Oz somehow before the end of this season but I still wanna hope that whenOscar busts out dem Oz-cane magictricks, it as him and not Oz. Please.
Still happy that Oscar was able to contributeto the fight in C11 though. It also seems like he figured out a way to takedown Cordovan’s mechazord. It definitely sounded like he had figured outsomething before he realized that Cordo was going to attack Ruby and warned herand Weiss to move. I feel like that could come into play for next episodegranted that Oscar somehow survives the crash and stays conscious. We shallsee.
Tumblr media
Whelp! This squigglemeister was looking forward to V6 C11 so that it cangive me a sense of what the finale was going to look like. Judging by today’sevents, I guess we can officially debunk any ideas of Neo and Cinder showing upuntil Atlas. So Ruby’s so-called trial by fire is going to be prolonged for another season or two. We shall see once we get to the Atlas Arc inV7.
In the meantime, it seems like the V6 finalefights are going to be Adam Taurusvs. Bumblebee and JNR_QROWvs Mecha Cordo. Cool. Although; I am still very curious aboutthe Wall of Argus. What does it mean? The way how the series kept cutting back to  the people of Argus feeling the effects ofthe fight makes me wonder if something is going to happen to the city involvingthe Wall. I’d like to think that there is a reason for everything shown andsaid on screen in the show.
Cinder told Neo to help her get to Atlas sono Fire and Ice-cream till Atlas. Tyrian and Watts said they’re going to Atlas to prepare forour heroes arrival and we even glimpsed their airship flying over Argus in C8.
Tumblr media
So something is going to go down with that Wall.I’m just here waiting for it. But I dunno, we shall see next week for C12.

RWBY Recaps: Vol. 5 “Welcome to Haven”
This is a re-posting from Oct. 14th, 2017 in an effort to get all my recaps fully on tumblr. Thanks!
Tumblr media
The day has arrived! After nearly eight months we finally have a new RWBY episode and I am fully prepared to dive into reviewing it (alongside my recaps of the earlier material). Obvious spoilers ahead for those behind on the series or who don't have a Rooster Teeth account for first access.
To start, I should mention that we also have a Yang short that aired pretty much alongside the new episode, in which Yang is helping Ruby to train in hand-to-hand before she leaves for Beacon. I've heard a lot of complaints about this short already--that Rooster Teeth waited too long to post it, that by focusing on a flashback they're ignoring present!Yang's disability and PTSD--but for all that the short still provides an excellent little glimpse into the sisters' pre-Beacon lives, along with the expected, kick-ass fight scene. This short does raise a number of questions though, or plot holes if we're being uncharitable. Chronologically we know that Ruby is already incredibly strong at this point and has excellent control over her semblance, yet a simple tumble into the grass knocks her out for a number of minutes? I also find it highly suspect that Ruby is that dependent on Crescent Rose to fight--she says herself she's useless against the Grimm without it--yet over the course of the following years she does nothing to better herself in hand-to-hand. Seeing Yang in the jaws of a Grimm should have been a wake up call...but it wasn't. I honestly hope this comes back to haunt Ruby at some point. That she'll get a "You can't rely on Crescent Rose" talking to in the same way Yang got a "You can't rely on your semblance" talk from Tai. Otherwise this short does little to further either sisters' characterization.
Tumblr media
Regardless, onto the episode itself. I watched it in my local Starbucks (too impatient to wait until I got home) and just five minutes in a stranger interrupted, apologizing, but asking if this was the new Volume because he was so excited for its premiere. Shockingly, I didn't entirely share his enthusiasm, if only because ever since Volume Three I've feared that RWBY will become too dark for my taste, losing that adorable, humorous spark that initially drew me to it.
I shouldn't have doubted Rooster Teeth. Just as Volume Four opens with happy bickering among the new team RNJR (or is it JNRR?), Volume Five opens with Ruby, Jaune, Nora, Ren, and Qrow making light of their dangerous trip to Haven. "We were fine," Ruby insists, "Only one of us almost died"--with a sly look at Qrow. For me these moments are crucial to the series, as they not only read as authentic (humor is a powerful tool in the face of trauma), but they keep the series from becoming overburdened with angst.
The team's walk through the "scenic route" gives everyone time to recap the basic plot of Volume 4 and then Qrow heaves open doors to reveal our first good look at Haven.
Tumblr media
It certainly seems to live up to its name. Interestingly (or simply due to financial/time constraints) Rooster Teeth opted to paint still images of the city's inhabitants with the 'camera' moving across them, rather than actually animating everyone. It works though, giving viewers the feeling that we're looking upon an intricate painting.
Ruby exclaims that "This is amazing!," drools over the weaponry--alright, so not everything has changed--and says that they'll be going "up," literally to Professor Lionheart's office and metaphorically in luck. The narrative uses that moment though to pull up until we reach Weiss' airship, still in the process of escaping her father. Though Weiss isn't given much time in the premiere, this short scene showcases her rapid character development. Where once she might have snubbed her nose at being stuck with an 'underling,' now Weiss speaks openly and respectfully to her pilot, admitting that she doesn't want to be a burden to anyone.
It's during this admission that they pick up a distress signal from another ship, one being attacked by Grimm. Weiss of course wants to stop and help, but the pilot reminds her that they're trying to keep a low profile and if they picked up the call, someone else will have too. They keep going and I'm left a little on the fence about this decision. The pilot's logic is sound, but there's also the issue of the bystander effect--we don't actually know if Weiss left those people to die or not. It's a moment that emphasizes that there are no good choices in war.
Tumblr media
Then again, for all we know Episode Two might pick up on the airship, with Weiss demanding that they turn back. We'll have to see.
Back in Haven, Ruby wipes a tear away upon reaching their destination. Jokes aside, they've been through so much to get there and it's nice to see some genuine emotion. There's then a rapid change of mood as the group notices just how empty the school is and, with weapons drawn, they kick in Professor Lionheart's door expecting the worst.
...instead all they do is give poor Lionheart a heart attack. He just lost track of time and forgot to meet them out front. Whoops.
Qrow still calls him out on the lack of security and though Lionheart explains it away with a lot of discussion regarding James, the council, and the distribution of Huntsmen/Huntresses in a time of war, his excuses ring a little false. Indeed, by the end of the scene we'll see him speaking to a holographic 'W' on his desk, presumably Arthur Watts, who was briefly in contact with Lionheart in "No Safe Haven." Looks like he's gone full dark side, or at the very least is being blackmailed.
Tumblr media
Before that though we learn a LOT about these relics we keep hearing about. Apparently the chamber each relic resides in can only be accessed by their corresponding Maiden--which seems to put a damper on the "Ozpin's cane is a relic" theory. Why have this security measure and then not make use of it? Did Ozpin (as the presumed Wizard) simply think that he was powerful enough to protect it on his own? Despite losing to Cinder? I'm inclined to think not, especially given the cavalier way the cane is handled between Qrow and Oscar. There's no doubt importance to Ozpin's weapon, but I'm no longer 100% convinced that it's a relic. (Even if I’m still headcanoning as such.)
We also learn each of the Maiden's... themes? Powers? For lack of a better word. Winter is the Maiden of creation, Summer the Maiden of destruction (an uncommon reversal there), Spring is knowledge, and Fall is choice. This puts a whole new dimension on Pyrrha's almost ascension as the Fall Maiden, given the complicated choices involved. Though Ozpin told her firmly not to fight and offered as much free will as a rock and a hard place would allow, a background as both a celebrity and a Huntress ensured that Pyrrha experienced the most pressure to conform and do what's (supposedly) best for others--even at the expense of herself.
Cinder is our latest Fall Maiden. Winter and Summer are still unknown, but Spring apparently skipped out on her duties a decade past...and is now in Raven's hands. What does a bunch of bandits want with a Maiden? We're not sure yet, but Qrow is eager to mount a full attack to get her back. Only Lionheart's (evil and biased) logic keeps him from rushing off. No doubt our team will take things into their own hands once they realize whose thumb Lionheart is under. The essence behind "Damn the council, we'll do it ourselves!" is common in most fantasy/action series. From Harry Potter to Korra we always have that moment when the rag-tag team has to step outside of the bureaucracy and actually get shit done. The trick is continually making sure that the council--or whatever else we’re dealing with--is actually corrupt/in the wrong.
Elsewhere Blake is dealing with the fallout of her own character short. Things are kept a little murky: Who exactly are these people beyond White Fang members? Who's side is Ilia on? It doesn't seem to matter much. The important bit is that Ilia tells Blake to leave now and she responds with a curt, "You're going to have to make me." So unless Ilia succeeds, it sounds like Blake won't be catching up with the rest of the team anytime soon. A pity.
Tumblr media
Yang is also off on her own. I must admit that Rooster Teeth had me fooled. Based on last Volume's conversation with Tai and the fact that Yang's short focuses on how she'll "Always have [Ruby's] back," cutting to her determined expression as she continues driving her motorcycle in the present day, I fully expected Yang to be meeting up with Team RNJR. Instead she's looking for her mom. No doubt though everyone will come together if Qrow and the kids go after Raven themselves. Until then Yang is poised to get info from a sleazy asshole who likes to hit on underage girls.
The episode's climax though is in Oscar's return. We jump "back" to a scene we got at the end of Volume 4, wherein the chronology smooths out to show us when exactly Oscar found Qrow in that bar. "It's good to see you again, Oz" was appropriately heartfelt--and raises more questions about why Qrow of all the inner circle knows so much about Ozpin's power. (A shipper heart can't get too hopeful, can it?) After a cut Oscar shows up on the kids' doorstep, asking for Ruby Rose... and we get more emotional whiplash as that line is reframed not as an, "I know everything" moment but an, "I brought your drunk as a skunk uncle back" moment. Qrow is adorable in this scene, happily wasted as he mutters about how he finally found Ozpin. Ruby's anger that her comic reading time was interrupted dissipates as Oscar freely admits, "You know me as Professor Ozpin."
Tumblr media
I'm very glad he came right out and said it. I wasn't looking forward to a whole Volume of wondering when the gang will find out the truth. Perhaps the most fascinating moment though is when Oscar, seemingly instinctually, says to Ruby,
"You have silver eyes."
There are three ways of explaining this line, far as I can tell:
Ozpin tells Oscar to say that. Unlikely. We don't see Oscar pausing or talking to himself, and why be cryptic when they're going to admit who they are two seconds later?
Oscar himself recognizes silver eyes. Possible, even if he is just a farm boy. Perhaps he's heard stories?
Ozpin's knowledge/personality is beginning to become accessible to Oscar. This has been my theory from the start. As I'll discuss more in-depth in my Volume 4 recaps, Ozpin as an entity still exists and presumably this isn't the first time he's changed bodies, implying that the headmaster we know has survived for who knows how many decades. The implication of this is he either somewhat merges with or entirely overwrites the personality of his host. I’m not hoping for the latter--a rather dark side to his semblance--but if so it might already be starting. Oscar's "You have silver eyes" might be a bit of Ozpin creeping into his reactions.
We'll have to wait to find out. This premiere was, for the most part, surprisingly joyful, but we can't expect that to last for long. Our new intro says it straight out: "Things looking bleak and they're bound to get worse."
Best to fasten your seat belts.
Tumblr media
Other Details of Note
The pilot's "Sorry, kid" to Weiss. Yes, please remind the audience that these are still children. People tend to forget that.
Qrow's constantly hunched back. I don't recall this from previous Volumes. This might be something Rooster Teeth is only now capable of with the new animation style, but regardless it's a wonderful little detail.
"That poor girl ripped to pieces" and Ruby's tiny gasp. Glad to see everyone hasn't completely forgotten about Penny. I'm also interested in whether the rest of the world didn't notice that Penny was a robot or if they're just that accepting of machines with souls as "real girls."
Qrow--"I quit teaching for a reason." Did a good job training Ruby though!
Using the Maidens' titles in place of their names is both good for the show's mystery and appropriately dehumanizing.
I'm surprised that no one responded to Ren's hope that they can reclaim the Spring Maiden in a more peaceful manner. In fact, he's not in the rest of that scene's shots, to the extent that I wondered if he was using his semblance for some reason. I hope that they'll return to this. We've had very little exploration of fighting-obsessed Huntsmen/Huntresses finding non-violent solutions to their problems and it might add some actual conflict to the group. They get along incredibly well for four teenagers traveling the world together.
Qrow tells Lionheart to keep in touch, as if we all don't know how terrible he is at contacting the rest of his super-secret team. Way to be a hypocrite, Qrow.
Sun and Blake's dad can finally agree on something! Drinks all around.
Yang's hand briefly shaking after her first "fight" since she lost her arm as well as the call-back joke to her times in Junior's bar. Most characters had little call-back moments and it was wonderful to see in a premiere.

RWBY VOL 6 CHPTR / EP 10 spoilers beneath the cut.
This should be brief since I felt that this chapter was essentially the final moments of calm before the unimaginable storm that we'll be seeing leading up to the final moment of the volume. The next chapters should be full of action.
First, I really want to say again that I absolutely love the pacing of this volume. A lot has happened and it wasn't stagnant like volume four. Volume six is direct about what it's setting out to accomplish and it doesn't do much stalling. The cast did say this volume would be darker, and I feel like it's the darkest we've seen thus far given all that's unfolded. Some delicate topics were covered early on in the volume. I think volume six is the series at its best, and I'm hoping volume seven carries on the momentum. Granted, that'll partly be determined by what occurs during the rest of six. I know my friends and family are amused by how excited I am about this volume. A friend of mine I met in high school got me into the series while volume one was going on, and I don't doubt that she's amused by how much I love RWBY.
Moving on to this specific chapter / episode, as I started out saying, it was definitely the last few moments of calm before the storm and it ended with the beginning of the storm. We're at the tip of the iceberg, folks. We still have yet to see what Tyrian and Watts are going to do in Atlas. We also have yet to see what Salem's final acts in this volume will be. Not to mention, Cinder and Neo's team up. So, again, the mecha, communication problems, and Blake's confrontation with Adam are just the start of things.
I loved Maria's facetiousness. I love everything about her, but her teasing / disrespecting the Atlas zealot was gold. I also love the fact that she teamed up with Weiss for their part of the plan. I feel like their personalities make for amusing interactions with each other, and I hope we get more scenes with them in the future.
Going out of order here, but I'm kind of wondering if anyone who watched the episode / chapter today was genuinely surprised by Adam's reappearance. I just really saw it coming and thought it was predictable because of the opening sequence for this volume. The volume's opening title sequence shows the volume's events, so he was bound to reappear. Not to mention, we've already seen him in this volume. Despite its predictability, I liked how the reappearance was handled though. The animation for the fight between Blake and Adam was fantastic. The animation for all of the fight scenes this volume has been phenomenal. As for the confrontation itself, I'm curious about how it's going to end and what's going to happen when Yang comes.
Although I still wish Winter had appeared as opposed to the Atlas zealot ( whose name I'm probably not going to remember anytime soon ), I'm glad that Winter at least got mentioned this volume. Otherwise, it would have been a missed opportunity.
I really liked the Qrow and Ruby scene this chapter / episode. Ruby has grown so much as not only a person, but a leader as well throughout these six volumes. Lately, I've been thinking about how amazing the character development that Team JNR and Team RWBY have gone through since volume one is. They've all come a long way, and it does something to the heart when thinking about all that they've faced and overcome thus far.
For now, I think that's all that I wanted to discuss. If I think of anything, I'll just make another post.
Lastly, I'll be at ALA next weekend and I'll watch the chapter from my hotel room. I most likely won't make a review post until Saturday night since I'm cosplaying each day of the con. Next Saturday, I'll be debuting my Kali Belladonna cosplay and the day prior I'll be Raven. Busy times; busy times.

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING REVIEW
Tumblr media
Since 2002 we’ve seen two actors take up the mantle that is Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Now, with the MCU’s continuously expanding universe and a partnership with Sony, a third joins the fray, Tom Holland. Spider-Man is one of the most recognizable icons in all of pop-culture, so when Spider-Man: Homecoming was announced and that Marvel Studios and Sony came to an agreement to allow Spider-Man to join the MCU, there was a lot of excitement. In addition, we got a wonderful taste of the new take on the web-slinger in Captain America: Civil War (2016), so a solo movie showcasing what this iteration was all about, naturally the hype was extremely high. And it really pays off in the end.
WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD
CHARACTERS/PERFORMANCES
It should be made known that this interpretation of Peter Parker is a younger kid than the past two live-action ones, specifically a 15 year old high school sophomore. Tom Holland is the youngest to play the role to date, and he fits it like a glove. Not only does he look the part being so young, but his whole demeanor and personality is immature, but in the best of ways. He’s quick-witted, and about as blown away as audiences are while he’s pulling off his super stunts. Tom Holland is a refreshing take on a character we all know, and have seen on the live-action screen twice before, and that’s great. He owns everything about Peter, the awkwardness, the genius, and the whimsy and outgoingness of Spider-Man. He’s perfect for the role. Alongside Tom Holland, he has his best friend character, Ned played by Jacob Batalon. Batalon plays the comedic role well enough, however I personally feel that there were too many bits of him just derailing scenes. He was funny, don’t get me wrong, however the film is filled with humor so to have a character that was there almost devoted as the comedic relief seemed a bit tried. His relationship to Peter, however, felt very genuine, so the constant gags he plays always feel in character. From a villain perspective, Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes (The Vulture) isn’t anything groundbreaking, but here he works very well with what the film is going for. He is realistic and felt mostly justified with what he was doing, however some jumps in motivation were a bit stark, which made Toomes feel a tad bit under developed. Nonetheless, Keaton plays him very well, with confidence and with just the right amount of broodiness that he didn’t feel at all like another cheesy, weak Marvel villain. On top of Adrian Toomes’ evil doing, I appreciated the humanistic approach to him and his team. When the world is now wracked with aliens and monsters, people of course will start to try and get ahead just to survive, but then to profit. It was a nice commentary on how humans react when they feel outgunned or up against a wall. A “force hand” to The Vulture’s character was very apparent.
Among the top stars in Homecoming, Robert Downey Jr., and Jon Favreau reprise their roles as Tony Stark and Happy Hogan respectively. I’m glad that this film didn’t try too hard to bank on Iron Man, he was a very welcome supporting character, an awkward mentor and a person that Peter thinks very highly of. I’ve missed Happy, not seeing him since Iron Man 3 (2013), and the same goes for Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts. These characters were all very welcome on screen. The other cast of characters including the rest of Peter’s classmates like Laura Harrier as Liz, Tony Revolori as Flash, and Zendaya as Michelle were all great to see. The diversity in the casting of the film is very commendable as well. It felt like a real diverse high school in a real city. It’s often seen as a little thing, but roles like these do carry a lot of weight and it’s very refreshing to see. On another beat, the younger take on Aunt May (played by Melissa Tomei) worked well with the younger take on Peter as well. She didn’t feel out of place, and honestly, I kind of preferred it. I did want to chime in on the MJ talks too. Zendaya plays a role named Michelle Jones, and at the end of the film she says “my friends call me MJ”, a clear emulation of the known character Mary-Jane, “MJ”, and Peter’s wife in the comics. There’s no real content in the film to say that she is the “new MJ” but regardless, she’s a different character entirely, as seen by how she carries herself here. The nickname is really the only place where the two characters cross. Regardless of future intent for the character, like her potentially becoming Peter’s love interest, she’s not Mary Jane. Her nickname of course pays homage to the “original MJ”, but that’s it. This is Marvel taking artistic liberties, with both diversifying its casting, as well as creating a unique, but still recognizable, universe for Spider-Man.
DIRECTION/WRITING
Director Jon Watts and his writing team had their work cut out for them, crafting a fresh take on the character of Spider-Man as well as blend him in with the established MCU. Skipping the original story completely was the absolute best decision for the film. Instead focusing on Peter’s dealings as Spider-Man, his desire of becoming an Avenger, and his really being a young, naïve kid. This is a grounded, small-scale approach to Spidey. He’s never in downtown Manhattan for example, he’s swinging from smaller building, and using what’s around him to get around. There’s even a bit of him swinging into a gold course where there nowhere to swing so he ends up just sprinting across the screen muttering, “This sucks”. The plotline as well is very small compared to the “world ending” stories that we’ve gotten used to seeing from Marvel at this point. It was refreshing to take a step back and focus on building Peter and Spider-Man, and establishing him, before anything else. The writing is very strong with Peter’s character. I will say though, that there were several bits throughout the film that had great dramatic potential, but were undercut by daft attempts at comedy. Spidey is always going to quipping, that’s a given, but here I felt like the writing was trying way too hard to add humor in not-needed places. I wanted to take things a tad bit more seriously, but I feel like I wasn’t allowed to.
As a storyline goes, it hits all the generic notes, but it relies a lot on Tom Holland’s character to do the heavily lifting. His character is meant to draw in viewers, and if done right, whatever Peter is doing, people should be invested in it. Like I said, it’s a small scale film, and it definitely plays on a lot of cheesy elements (typical high school, typical romance, the same Peter Parker troubles we’ve all seen before), however the film generally does a great job with allowing those things to work with the script and have it still feel exciting, rather than tried. Homecoming paced itself generally well, too. There were some parts that felt a little rushed, some of the high school sequences felt a bit lackluster as well. Almost like they were in there because they had to be, but they didn’t carry too much weight. What really moved the film along was Peter himself and whenever Spidey was on screen. There were some great fight sequences, the ferry scene being the most notable. Spidey was quick, quipping the whole time, and showcased some amazing talents. I very much enjoyed “Karen”, Spider-Man’s computer that Stark put in his suit. I loved seeing the high-tech suit, something we hadn’t seen before. There were some great action scenes throughout, the ferry scene being the most notable. It being the clear height of the film, where we get a real showdown between Spider-Man and Vulture, a great scene with Peter trying to keep the ship from breaking off, as well as Tony confiscating the Spider suit. The movie was in full swing by this time, and Peter’s transition back into his make-shift suit through the end of the film didn’t feel spoiled at all. Heading back to the roots was a nice direction to go in, especially to give a glimpse to what Spidey was before Tony’s suit.
I think Homecoming started in the best of ways. After being introduced to Adrian Toomes during the clean up after the “Battle of New York”, we get a first person, video footage perspective of Peter when he is first picked up by Tony in Civil War, to when he gets his new suit, as well as him filming while he’s waiting for his queue to swing in and take Cap’s shield. I thought that whole bit was extraordinarily clever and the best way to introduce Holland’s Peter into this movie. Separately, it isn’t abundantly clear when this film takes place. We do get an ”8 Years Later” stamps after we see Toomes cleaning up New York; we’re obviously somewhere in between Civil War, as Cap is cited as a war criminal now, and the events of Doctor Strange and the Earth bit of Guardians 2 isn’t mentioned at all. I also have to give a great commendation for Cap’s troll of a post-credits scene. After Gunn’s clever post-credits bombardment in Guardian’s 2, we get Cap doing a PSA announcement on “patience” and how it’s so important, even when faced with something so disappointing when you waited a long time to get to it. I see you, Marvel.
Final Rating: 8.5/10
I think Spider-Man: Homecoming is exactly where the MCU needed to go with Spider-Man. It didn’t waste too much time getting to him, it gives Tony and Happy, new Spider-Man gadgets and things, and it was an all-around good time. There may have been some issues with the comedy undercutting some important, potentially dramatic scenes, and the plotline being a generic one, but the film is a lot of fun regardless because Tom Holland alone reels you in and keeps you smiling. It’s small scale, and to some it may feel a tad bit underwhelming, but for the character of Spider-Man, this is where we needed to see him. In a “friendly, neighborhood” setting. It worked really well, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Spider-Man in the future. I really hope he’s here to stay because: objectively, this is a great movie and Tom Holland is wonderful, but subjectively, Spidey is my favorite in all of Marvel comics, so I really want him to stick around in the MCU.

Meg had all but begged you to come to Las Vegas with her for her birthday. You lost count of how many times you denied her now. Vegas was just never a place you were interested in going. It wasn't your scene. You weren't a partier nor a drinker, preferring to sit at home and read one of your many books.
“If you don't come with me, for my birthday, I will literally disown you,” she'd said to you over dinner; her crazy, curly hair thrown up in a messy bun, a glass of wine in hand.
“I don't drink, Meg. I won't be any fun.”
“Look, we don't have to go out every night. All I ask is that you come with me because you love me, and go clubbing with me one time.”
This persisted for about two weeks non stop, and eventually you caved. She was your best friend after all, and she'd done so much for you in the past that was totally out of her own comfort zone.
“Good,” she’d said when you finally accepted. “I already bought your plane ticket anyway…”
Exactly a week later you were in Vegas, and you had never felt so out of place in your entire life. Thankfully, Meg kept to her word, and you didn't go out every night. Actually, it was your second day out of five and she hadn't even mentioned it yet. The strip was something to behold, with so many different sights to see. You were happy to just people watch.
“Hey, I'm gonna check out this bookstore over here, okay?”
You needed a quiet minute to yourself, not used to the hustle and bustle of the city. Meg rolled her eyes.
“Yeah, go ahead. Not that you don't already have so many books you could open your own bookstore…”
Meg sat down on a nearby bench and you walked away quickly, before she could protest.
The bookstore was quaint and small, but it felt completely out of place here. Just like you. Books of every shape and size lined every wall, and a fat, orange tabby cat snoozed in the window. You were pretty sure you smelled incense burning, the rich smell of vanilla invading your senses.
Walking along the rows of books, you reached your fingertips out to graze the spines. The smell and feel of books was always a comfort to you. You were lost in a trance as you walked, smacking straight into what felt like a brick wall. You fell backwards, landing right on your butt.
“Woah! Are you okay?”
You'd walked into a person, a man in fact, and when he turned around to help you up, your mind went blank. He was absolutely gorgeous, and you immediately felt inferior. The man looked to be about middle aged, dressed sharply with perfectly styled light brown locks spiked at the top of his head. Dark scruff lined his cheeks and he was towering over you. As he knelt down next to you and assessed you for injuries, you noticed his eyes were emerald green.
“I-I'm fine,” you stuttered. “I'm so sorry for bumping into you. I wasn't watching where I was going.”
“No no, please,” he said, taking his large hand and gripping your elbow, helping you on your feet. “I understand how distracting books can be.”
You felt your heart skip in your chest. He was beautiful and he loved books? It was like finding the rarest diamond in the largest mine. What was he doing in Vegas? You were so enthralled by this man, that you didn't even notice you were both staring at each other, his hand still gripped on your elbow. He cleared his throat and let go, looking at his boots and shoving his hands into the pockets of his jeans.
“Thank you for helping me, um…?”
“Dean,” he replied quickly, extending his hand to you. You shook it, feeling a spark rocket through you to your core.
“I'm Y/N,” you replied meekly, brushing your free hand over your hair.
“A beautiful name for a beautiful woman,” he said with a smile, flashing his pearly white teeth at you. You saw his cheeks flush and you bit your bottom lip.
“You're too kind. What brings you to Vegas?”
“Ah,” he said, balancing back and forth on the balls of his feet. “I'm here for my brother’s bachelor party, but I'm not used to the city life. I'm just a small town Kansas boy. I stopped here because I needed some peace and quiet.”
“Same, actually. I'm here for my best friends birthday. She kind of forced me to come and I needed a break from all the noise, so I saw this bookstore and… well, here I am.”
“Well, I'm glad we… bumped into each other,” he said with another 1,000 watt smile.
“Me too,” you replied, feeling your face start to grow hot.
The bell above the door of the bookstore made a tinkling sound, indicating someone had just come in.
“Y/N!” Meg said loudly. “Come on or we're gonna miss our reservation!” Her eyes grew wide when she saw who was standing next to you.
“I'm sorry,” you apologized to Dean, even though you wanted nothing more than to stay and talk to him more. “I have to go.”
“Well, I hope I see you again. It was nice to meet you, Y/N.”
He reached out and gave your arm a soft squeeze.
“You too, Dean.”
Meg was waiting outside the store with her arms crossed, tapping her foot impatiently. As you started to exit the store, you took one last glance back at the mysterious, book-reading man who was also watching you leave. When he saw you turn back he waved meekly, an almost sad smile on his face. The pull toward him was hard to ignore, but you swallowed it down and followed an eager Meg to the restaurant.
“Do we have to go to a club, Meg? Can't we just go to a bar or another classy restaurant?”
“Y/N, we only have two nights left here and we are going to this club. You don't have to drink, but we're going to have fun, okay?”
“I guess so…” you said, feeling defeated, picking at the loose strings on the comforter with your nails. “I just don't think I’ll be much fun. I don't want to ruin your night.”
“You'll be fine. Maybe you'll even see your prince charming again.”
Dean. You hadn't stopped thinking about him since your meeting in the bookstore yesterday.
“What are the odds that I'll see him in the club we’re going to? Vegas isn't exactly small, Meg.”
“You never know,” she said with a grin. “Now come on, let's do your makeup.”
After Meg applied more makeup to your face than you'd ever worn before, and helped you to squeeze into the tightest black dress you owned, you were in a cab and off to the club.
It was dark inside, save for the flashing neon lights that streaked the walls. The music was so loud it was hard to think. Meg took your hand and drug you over to the bar, your feet already hurting in your uncomfortable heels. She ordered you both a drink and she handed one to you.
“‘You know I don't drink!” you yelled to her over the music.
“Just have one for my birthday!” she said with a smile. Against your better judgement you took a large gulp of the drink she handed you. It tasted surprisingly good, and you'd finished it sooner than expected.
Meg kept trying to make you come to the dance floor with her, but you resisted, opting to sit at the bar instead and watch everyone else dance. She had met a man, who seemed to be very into her, so you didn't want to get in the way.
“Excuse me,” a voice said in your ear. He was yelling, but it wasn't loud considering the music would shatter anyone's eardrums.
You turned around and the exact person you wanted to see was standing next to you.
“Dean?!” you yelled. “What are you doing here?!”
“I'm here with my brother! Do you want to go somewhere more quiet?!”
You looked over at Meg and saw how much fun she was having without you. She wouldn't miss you if you were gone, and she'd have more fun without your Debby downer ass around. Plus, she knew how you felt about Dean. She'd understand.
You shot her a quick text to let her know where you were going. Dean took your hand in his with ease and led you out of the club. When you got outside, you breathed in a gulp of fresh air.
“God! I'm so claustrophobic. This feels so great…”
Dean chuckled, swiping fingers through his hair.
“It's so loud in there I couldn't even think straight…”
You were both staring at each other again and you quickly looked away, your face growing hot.
“Would you like to get a coffee with me?” he asked suddenly and all you could do was nod, as he took your hand again. This time your fingers were intertwined.
Dean took you to a coffee shop just a few blocks away and you sat down with your vanilla chai; his coffee, pitch black. You admired him for drinking something so vile.
“It's not so bad,” he grinned. “Sugar will kill you.”
“But it tastes amazing, so I'll be happy to take that chance.”
“What's your favorite book?” he asked suddenly, sipping his black coffee.
“The Lord of the Rings,” you answered quickly. “I've been on the search for a first edition copy of at least one of them for years. Any bookstore I find I look for it, but it never happens.”
“Ah, the diamond in the ruff.”
“Exactly, it's an adventure. What about you?”
“Stephen King. The Shining is my favorite. I'm a sucker for mystery and horror.”
You both talked for what seemed like hours, basically pouring your hearts out to complete strangers. There was something about him though that you couldn't put your finger on. His heart was pure and good, and he was gorgeous. The kind of man you'd do stupid things with.
At one point in the conversation he reached out and just grabbed your hand, caressing the back of it with his thumb. You felt goosebumps rise along your skin, your stomach flipping around like an acrobat.
After Dean paid for your coffees, he walked you back outside. You checked your phone and saw that Meg hadn't even texted you back.
“Shit…” you breathed, tossing your phone back into your bag.
“What's wrong, sweetheart?”
You felt your thighs clench together at his sudden pet name.
“Meg hasn't answered me yet. She must still be in the club and she has our room key…”
“Well, if you want, you can come back to me and my brother’s room until she texts you. He won't be back until morning, I'm sure. But, only if you want to.”
You looked down the street towards the club, before looking back into Dean’s perfect emerald eyes. Never in your life had you ever gone back with a stranger, but something in your heart was pulling you to him.
“Sure,” you replied with a smile. “If you don't mind my company.”
“How could I ever resist alone time with a woman as beautiful as you?”
Dean called a cab and you both rode together back to his hotel room which, coincidentally, was in the same hotel as your own.
When he opened the door to his room, there were clothes strewn all over the floor. It was definitely a man’s room.
“Sorry for the mess,” he said, pushing the piles off the bed closest to the window.
“It's okay,” you said, walking towards the window. “You have a beautiful view on this side.”
Dean got up and stood next to you, his hand brushing the small of your back, wrapping his fingers around your waist. You leaned in close to him so naturally, resting your head on his shoulder.
“Why does this feel so normal?” your big mouth asked. Dean chuckled.
“I know what you mean…”
“Are we crazy for doing this? I mean we just met yesterday. And now I'm here in your hotel room.”
“Is it weird that I felt a pull to you from the moment you bumped into me?”
“No, because I felt the same way…”
“My entire life has been spent over analyzing things, and I think it's made me miss out on certain opportunities that could have been good for me. I don't want that to happen with you too…”
Dean turned to you and pulled you closer, until your noses were almost touching. You could feel his warm breath on your face and you suddenly felt dizzy.
“But we’re in Vegas. You're from Kansas. If there is something here, how will we ever know if it will work out?”
“Yanno,” he started, brushing a stray piece of hair out of your eyes. “They say what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but I'm willing to take the chance with you. I can't let this opportunity for something great pass me by again…”
His words were all it took for you to lean in and place your lips to his own. The kiss was soft, his lips so plush and full just like you thought they would be. You could tell he was treading the waters, not wanting to offend you or go to far. You admired that about him and it turned you on even more, prompting you to take his bottom lip into your mouth.
Dean made a noise as you did this that shook you to your core. It was almost a groan, but the manliest whine you'd ever heard. His tongue peeked out and danced with your own in perfect unison, as if they were made for each other. You sighed into his mouth as he deepened the kiss, his fingers in your hair now.
“Are you sure this is okay?” he asked again as he reluctantly pulled away from you, kissing you all over your face, waiting for your answer.
“I've never been so sure of anything in my entire life,” you breathed back, as he quickly connected his lips to yours again.
You let your hands roam over his broad shoulders, feeling the strong muscles ripple on his back. His hands explored your own body, stopping at your ass and giving it a soft squeeze.
“I hope this is okay after your little fall yesterday,” he whispered in your ear and you immediately laughed. Everything seemed so easy in his presence, like a breath of fresh air.
“It's perfectly fine now,” you whispered back, taking the shell of his ear between your teeth.
This prompted Dean to scoop you up effortlessly, his hands cupping your ass, as he laid you gently down on the bed. He continued to kiss your face and neck, chills coursing through you. Everything about him was intoxicating and you were ready to go all the way with him.
“‘May I?” he asked, his fingers under the strap of your dress.
“Yes,” you breathlessly replied. “But please stop asking.”
“Yes, ma'am,” he laughed, low in his throat, as he took both of your straps down and kissed your collar bone. You helped him and pulled your dress down further and his eyes grew wide as you were completely exposed.
“Wow…”
“Good wow?” you asked meekly, feeling judged under his perfect gaze.
“Great wow…” he said, reaching out to cup your breasts in his hands. Your head lulled back, feeling more free than you had in a long time. “I don’t usually do this, so I don’t want you to think I’m taking advantage of you.”
“Just shut up and kiss me,” you demanded, grabbing the hair at the back of his head and kissing him fiercely. He was on top of you now, his knees on either side of you, pinning you down. His mouth were on your breasts, his lips and tongue working magic on your already hard nipples. Dean pulled your dress down and over your feet, throwing it to the side. He continued to kiss your skin as he pulled off your panties, leaving you in just your heels.
“Can we leave these on?” he asked with a wink.
“We can do whatever you want,” you replied boldly, proud of yourself. “But some of these clothes need to come off…”
You got up on your knees on the bed and unbuttoned his shirt, helping him to shrug it off his shoulders. They were even more broad than you thought they were, and your fingers traced them eagerly. Freckles dusted along them, just like his face, and you leaned down to kiss your favorite one where his neck met his collarbone.
“Where have you been all my life?” you asked sincerely, as you watched him back up and undo his belt, taking his pants, boxers, and additional clothes off, throwing them to the side.
“Kansas,” he replied, taking his hard, long cock in his hands and stroking it. “Waiting for you.”
It happened in such a swift motion you barely had any time to think. You watched him slip a condom on and get on top of you, his strong hands holding onto the meat of your thighs. He lined the head of his cock up to your already soaking wet entrance and began to ease himself in. You felt him fill you up and moaned loudly, arching your back on the bed.
The love you made with Dean was just that; love. It was unlike anything you’d ever had before with anyone. He took his time and went slow, ensuring you came at least a dozen times; kissing you all over your body, showering you with compliments. Until at last, he came hard, his cock twitching inside you.
“That was amazing…” you breathed, laying next to him a complete sweaty mess.
“It sure was, sweetheart,” he said, leaning over to plant a soft kiss on your lips. “Be right back.”
You watched his adorable butt as he walked off to the bathroom to clean up. You were on cloud nine, your head swimming with many thoughts. One thing was for sure, you knew no matter what happened over the next few days, you were in love with this man.
Your phone ringing in your bag made you jump nearly out of your skin. It was Meg.
“Where the fuck are you?!” she yelled angrily.
“I texted you and told you where I was.”
“I need you t-to… come get me, please. I c-can’t walk.”
“I’ll be right there,” you replied quickly, grabbing your clothes and throwing them back on.  You could hear the shower on in the bathroom and you didn’t have time to explain. Instead, you left a note on the dresser with a post-it, explaining why you had to leave.
Dean,
My friend needed me so I had to go. I had a great night with you. I hope we can see each other again before I leave.
xo
Y/N
Without much time to think about it you figured the note would suffice for now, and you could come back and see Dean when Meg was settled.
Except it didn’t turn out that way.
Meg was belligerent. You had to stay with her all night to make sure she didn’t throw up in her sleep. You didn’t have Dean’s phone number, nor did he have yours. Not to mention he didn’t even know your room number.
After a restless night’s sleep, you decided to walk up to Dean’s room to see if he wanted lunch. You knocked on the door a few times, but no one answered.
“Room’s vacant, miss,” a woman behind you said. She was pushing a cart, and was clearly room service. “Left this morning.”
That was it. Your soulmate was gone. Forever. You had no way of getting in touch with him, or of ever seeing him again. Your heart shattered into a million pieces inside your chest. You blew it.
“Where did you go?” Meg asked when you got back to the hotel room.
“I went to see Dean. I kind of left him hanging last night…”
“And?”
“He’s gone, Meg. And I have no idea how to get in touch with him.” “Well,” Meg said, sauntering slowly over to you and handing you a wrapped parcel. “Room service dropped this off about ten minutes ago.”
You took off the twine that wrapped the package and ripped open the wrapping paper. What was inside took your breath away, for more reasons than just one. It was a first edition Fellowship of the Ring book, by none other than J.R.R. Tolkien himself. You ran your fingers over the front cover, tears welling up in your eyes. Flipping open the cover, a similar post-it fell out to the one you left Dean the night before.
Y/N
I had to leave with my brother this morning to go back to Kansas for his wedding. I’m sorry it didn’t work out that I could say goodbye to you, but I hope this makes up for it. As a stroke of fate, it just so happened to be at the bookstore you bumped into me at, and I had to buy it. I’ve left my number on the back of this, along with my home address. If you want Two Towers and Return of the King, you’ll just have to come get them. I had an amazing time last night, and I can’t wait to see that beautiful face again.
Dean
You closed the book and hugged it to your chest, tears streaming down your face now.
“What’s wrong?” Meg asked, kneeling down by you and rubbing your back.
“Nothing…” you replied, wiping the tears from your eyes. “How much is a flight from here to Kansas?”

10 Classic '80s and '90s Movies That Influence 'Spider-Man: Homecoming'
Tumblr media
Tom Holland and Jacob Batalon in Spider-Man: Homecoming (Photo: Sony Pictures)
Warning: This post contains spoilers for key scenes and plot points of Spider-Man: Homecoming.
If you’re a Marvel Comics fan, Spider-Man: Homecoming is a veritable gold mine of Easter eggs from the wall-crawler’s 55-year-and-counting career of catching thieves just like flies. At the same time, it’s equally rich with homages to popular teen movies from the ’80s and ’90s. Even before the film went into production, Marvel Studios chief, Kevin Feige, made a point of describing it as a “John Hughes movie,” directly name-checking the writer and director responsible for so many of that era’s high school classics.
In separate interviews with Yahoo Movies, star Tom Holland explained that director Jon Watts gave the young cast a must-watch list of classic movies to watch before shooting began, while Homecoming  co-writer John Francis Daley elaborated on the Spidey-Hughes connection. “What John Hughes was best at was finding the funny in the relatable… and to keep Peter as a truly normal, grounded, relatable person I think is really set him apart from all the other versions of Spider-Man that people have seen.” Homecoming‘s cinematic influences do extend beyond Hughes, though. Here’s a list of 10 teen favorites that are overtly, or subtly, referenced by Spider-Man and his amazing friends.
Tumblr media
Matthew Broderick in ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ (Photo: Everett Collection)
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) This one is kind of a gimme; while in hot pursuit of the Vulture’s henchmen, poor Peter Parker (Tom Holland) has to forego his usual web-slinging action due to the fact that he’s in that dreaded low-rise territory known as suburbia. Crashing through backyard after backyard, he passes a pool party where Matthew Broderick’s own climactic backyard chase from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is playing out on a TV screen. “Great movie,” Peter calls out as he continues on to the next yard. (Wonder if he considers Ferris Bueller to be as ancient a film as The Empire Strikes Back?) “That scene is a perfect example of our challenge to take Spider-Man out of a world where he’s comfortable,” director Watts told Yahoo Movies. “If you put him in the suburbs where there’s nothing tall to swing from, what does he do? It was a great opportunity to put him in an awkward situation.”

Judd Nelson and Ally Sheedy in ‘The Breakfast Club’ (Photo: Universal/courtesy Everett Collection)
The Breakfast Club (1985) At a press conference in June, Zendaya revealed that Ally Sheedy’s proto-Goth girl, Allison Reynolds, is a direct ancestor of her Homecoming character, Michelle “M.J.” Jones. And the two do have a lot in common, including a quiet manner that masks a caustic wit, as well as a flair for epic side-eye and eye-rolls. In fact, Michelle is glimpsed sitting in detention alongside Peter — the Anthony Michael Hall of her school — in one memorable Homecoming scene, despite the fact that she’s not even supposed to be there. Speaking with the press, Zendaya made it clear that she hopes modern teens take away the same lesson from Michelle that their parents learned from Allison, namely that: “It’s OK to be weird. If you make things awkward and uncomfortable, that’s cool. I love that Michelle’s outspoken and says what everyone’s thinking, but she just doesn’t care.”

William Zabka and Ralph Macchio in ‘The Karate Kid’ (Photo: Mary Evans/Ronald Grant/Everett Collection)
The Karate Kid (1984) He may not pledge allegiance to Cobra Kai, but Flash Thompson (Tony Revolori) is totally the Johnny Lawrence to Peter’s Daniel LaRusso. Whether calling him “Penis Parker” (itself an indirect shout-out to another ’80s classic, E.T.) or engaging in some decidedly unsportsmanlike trash talk during Academic Decathlon training sessions, Flash is always eager to humiliate his rival on the most public stage possible. But Peter, like LaRusso before him, scores the final knockout, hijacking Flash’s car and leaving him by the side of the road with his homecoming date. Revolori, who previously played the hero of Wes Anderson’s acclaimed 2014 film, The Grand Budapest Hotel, has said that he enjoyed breaking bad in Homecoming, especially since the movie doesn’t make an issue about his race. “The fact that there’s not a single line of exposition to explain why I look the way I look. I’m just in the movie. It’s not about being a certain race, and I think that’s the kind of diversity we need in Hollywood right now.”
yahoo
Can’t Hardly Wait (1998) If only Peter had re-watched this nostalgic ’90s favorite before heading over to Liz Allan’s shindig, he would have realized that a high school house party is the absolute worst place to try and impress the girl you’ve been crushing on for years. Sure enough, his plan to swing in and make a big splash as Spider-Man is thwarted by an unplanned side mission involving the Shocker. Can’t Hardly Wait‘s Preston (Ethan Embry) is similarly unable to persuade his dream girl, Amanda (Jennifer Love Hewitt), of his affection due to a series of increasingly crazy circumstances. According to Daley, an early version of the storyline involved Peter hosting the party instead of Liz, but is similarly prevented from joining the festivities in costume. “All the cool kids from school burst into his bedroom while he’s gone and just start going through all his s—t, like all the toys he still kept.” Adds Daley’s co-writer, Jonathan Goldstein: “That’s very Hughes-ian, like the characters Anthony Michael Hall used to play. The kid who’s too old to still be doing this stuff.”

Weird Science (1985) We should probably be glad that geek buddies Peter and Ned (Jacob Batalon) are only applying their serious science and tech skills to making web fluid and hacking Tony Stark-designed super-suits. Otherwise, they might go and do something really weird…like building a cyber-girlfriend who steps out of the computer and into reality. Here’s another fun connection between Weird Science and Homecoming: Robert Downey Jr. is a big ol’ spoilsport in both. Back in ’85, he dropped a red Icee on dorks Gary and Wyatt, and 32 years later, he drops a bomb on Peter by taking away the teen’s Spider-Man suit after his Staten Island Ferry mishap.

Pretty in Pink (1986) High school law eschews the designated dork from taking the pretty girl to the big school dance. But Hughes went and upset the natural order of things by having Duckie (Jon Cryer) swoop in and rescue his best friend and longtime crush object, Andie (Molly Ringwald) from being stood up at the prom by status-conscious Blane (Andrew McCarthy). Truthfully, it was a bridge too far for audiences at the time, who demanded that the ending be reshot with the pretty girls and the popular guy walking off into a happily ever after. For a brief moment, though, Duckie got to be the hero who gets the girl, a geek dream that Peter gets to live out when he asks the significantly more popular Liz to the homecoming dance and she says yes. For better or for worse, he ultimately loses the girl to her villainous dad rather than a petty prepster.

Back to the Future (1985) No sooner has he gotten to Hill Valley High’s “Enchantment Under the Sea” dance than Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) has to ditch his date — and future Mom — Lorraine (Lea Thompson) in order to take care of some pressing time travel business. Peter isn’t able to bust a move at his school’s homecoming soiree either, regretfully abandoning Liz on the dance floor in order to thwart her Vulture father’s plot to raid Tony Stark’s airborne storage locker. At least Marty gets to invent rock and roll during his time brief time at the Hill Valley dance; Peter has to bail before he can show off how he can out-Rihanna Rihanna.

Jennifer Connelly and Frank Whaley skate the night away in Career Opportunities (Photo: Universal Pictures)
Career Opportunities (1991) Peter Parker isn’t the only nerd lucky enough to spend a night locked in a facility with Jennifer Connelly. This John Hughes-scripted comedy traps awkward outcast Jim (Frank Whaley) and knockout Josie (Connelly) in a Target store after closing time, where they have to contend with their wildly different backgrounds, as well as a pair of bungling burglars. Midway through Homecoming, Spider-Man’s attempt to foil a Vulture robbery lands him in deep storage inside the U.S. Department of Damage Control, with only his “suit lady,” a.k.a. his in-suit A.I. K.A.R.E.N. (voiced by the Beautiful Mind Oscar winner), for company. We’ll leave it to you to decide whether Target for the Damage Control storage locker has better toys.

Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985) Not a teen movie, you say? Perhaps that’s true, but Tim Burton’s feature filmmaking debut is nevertheless an ’80s classic for young kids and teenagers alike. Besides, it can’t be accidental that Spider-Man’s first big victory in Homecoming involves stopping a bicycle thief. And he doesn’t even have to leave Queens to do it! Poor Pee-wee Herman has to travel all the way to Texas to recover his beloved two-wheeled ride. Here’s an eye-popping face-off we want to see in the Homecoming sequel: Spider-Man vs. Large Marge.
