you know that scene from the simpsons where bart breaks down to miss krabappel cause he failed a test but this time he tried?
for some reason that reminds a lot of what james would be like as student, especially in the middle years of hogwarts.
i imagine james in the earlier years as one of those kids who never paid attention in class properly, always did homework last minute and never revised but always managed to pass. passed every test, handed their homework in somewhat on time. but he never did amazing. in the first three years of hogwarts, he was never near the top of the class. if anything, he was close to the bottom.
all in all, he scrapped by and was fine with it. the grades never bothered him and he never tried to change it.
but then work got harder, and there was more pressure and expectations to do well and all his friends were getting better, getting praise and recognition. they were getting well above passing grades, never failing exams and had something to be proud of... and james was still scrapping by. a mark or two above failing, going as far as to being made to resit exams and essays and projects cause it's fifth year and exams are around the corner and he wasn't getting it.
so he gets put in private study sessions with mcgonagall, or otherwise he'd have to get pulled out of quidditch. that was mcgonagall's compromise. cause she believed him enough to help, something no other teacher did. he was basically failing all classes cause he wasn't trying.
and due to the threat on his place on the team, he actually started trying. he spent all his free time in the library, stopped putting all his focus on pranks, even convinced remus to help him study. he did everything he needed to do for it, spending every waking hour thinking about it. put extra effort into all his other subjects and homework. he participated in class, did the tasks done and went to every study sessions with mcgonagall.
and then when the next exam rolled around in mcginagall's class, he put his all into it. worked from the very first second and to the very last... and failed. full on failed. didn't even get a passing grade.
and i just imagine have this converstion being like...
m: 'i thought things would different this time,'
j: 'same...'
m: 'what went wrong?'
j: 'i don't know, i thought i was doing good'
m: ‘me too, this tell me otherwise’
j: ‘i tried’
m: ‘did you though james, have you been trying without me’
j: *crying* ‘yes! i have, i really tried this time mcgonagall, i really did! i read every book and spent all my time studying and did everything i needed to do! i really tried, you need to believe me, i need you to believe me, you can ask my friends will vouch for me, i did try! i want to do better, i tried so hard this time i swear!’
and this fail was the first fail which hurt because he really did try. this was the fail which got him to try harder in the later years of Hogwarts.
i just think about that scene a lot. cause i feel like James is a very smart person, but just isn’t an academic person. not at the beginning at least…

Remus doesn’t thinks he’s hot as fuck because he isn’t his own type. His type is pretty boys with light eyes and devilish grins. He is a giant with no coordination and a pension for grandpa sweaters. This is why he’s immediately attracted to Sirius. Even Regulus and Barty trip him up once in awhile. Remus Lupin has a fucking type, okay.
James, on the other hand, is attracted to personality and vibes. His type is mean, a nice smile, and long fingers. This is why he knows he’s fucking hot, because his vibes are immaculate. This is also why he’s had a crush on Sirius, Remus, Lily, Regulus, Dorcas, Frank, and Marlene.
They’re both messes.

All fic writers writing Sirius and James needing help from Lupin for passing exams and making the charmed mirrors and every other achievement S & J did should just tag their fics as OOC and be done with it.
Sirius and James were incredibly intelligent and accomplished individuals and this shit of wrong tagging and ooc characters is getting really annoying now.

Lily and Petunia have such an interesting and complex relationship and there aren’t enough fics that delve into that.
From what we know from canon, the two were relatively close before Lily’s magic was discovered. We can assume that Petunia’s resentment ramped up when Snape and Lily started to become friends, which was partially because she just didn’t like him and thought he was a weird but if you look at it from a child’s perspective it paints it in a different light, children are easily possessive of things and people, siblings especially, sisters especially.
Her resentment was furthered with their parents treatment of the two. Petunia was the eldest sister, between the two she was the less remarkable, from what we know and can assume from canon, Lily was the golden child, when she received her Hogwarts letter and their parents reacted positively and from what we’re told in the books, ecstatically even, which furthered her resentment even more when she even wrote to Dumbledore asking if she could go to Hogwarts too, but he had told her, though kindly, that because she was a muggle she could not.
Petunia lashed out the only way she knew how to, with resentment and envy, which makes sense really.
If Petunia was already envious of her sister, and their parents put Lily on an even higher pedestal after they found out she was a witch, adding Dumbledore’s words about Petunia not be able to go because she was a “muggle”, then it’d make sense that Petunia would resent Lily, to make her a “freak” in her eyes.
Petunia’s jealousy and resentment came from many things with Lily’s odd abilities, with Lily spending time with Snape, with Lily discovering she was a witch and their parents praising her for that, with Lily’s acceptance into Hogwarts and Petunia’s rejection from it, with pureblood James Potter.
That’s not to say that Lily is at fault or that she didn’t care, we KNOW Lily loved her sister. We can safely assume that she wrote to Petunia throughout Hogwarts, her letters probably getting more scarce as they grew and Petunia had stopped responding, but Lily still sent Petunia a letter when she gave birth to Harry, she still felt that her sister was important enough to her to send a letter announcing Harry’s arrival.
Petunia’s resentment even caused her to marry Vernon because he was everything that Lily was not. He was a boring regular man with a boring regular life. (Which we learn from this part in the books below)
“Mrs Dursley pretended she didn't have a sister, because her sister and her good-for-nothing husband were as unDursleyish as it was possible to be.”
However, even with all that envy and resentment, Lily was still her sister, we see this when Vernon and Marge are laughing about Lily being a bitch and Petunia isn’t, we see this when Petunia tells Harry that he didn’t just lose a mother that night but she lost a sister(it’s in the movies explicitly so not book canon but it’s still a thing to note)
Petunia treated Harry the way she did because he was attached to the wizarding world and her sister, yeah Harry was a wizard but he was also the spitting image of James, Petunia must have resented him that much more because Harry was the embodiment of the two things that took away her sister, magic and James Potter. More over, Voldemort killed Lily to get to Harry, Lily died for Harry, it’s not an insane thing to think that that added even more to Petunia’s disdain.
Harry was the embodiment of everything that took Lily away from Petunia, magic, James Potter and the very reason her sister was dead. In Petunia’s mind at least.
To add Petunia treated Harry horrifically and no this isn’t an excuse for her inexcusable gross actions, but an unnecessary long look into the reasoning for it.

Severus Snape (a complex character)
(a study into his character by yours truly)
severus snape who saw something in the girl across the street, who he though must be so lonely being so alone in a house full of muggles, having none like her around.
severus snape offering comfort to the same girl after her sister called her a freak. severus snape watching that girl, the first friend hes every had walk onto the train to hogwarts and become friends with everyone.
severus snape who watched this girl get sorted into the 'good' house while he was in the 'evil' house. severus snape, with whom suddenly one of the most popular guys at school had a problem with.
severus snape lurking in the shadows, trying to block out the voices that said that all slytherins are evil. severus snape trying to block out the whispers of his fellow house mates who kept on saying his bsf should die.
severus snape who saw the girl he loves so bad get asked out again and again by the one guy everyone loves, knowing hed never amount up to him.
severus snape who was so smart that with nothing to do he began to form curses.
severus snape who may lurk but never cower. secerus snape who gave as good as he got.
severus snape who watched his bsf slowly begin to befriend the people he's been feuding eith for years.
severus snape who knew somethign was off with that lanky boy, cornered the one oerson who might be considered closest to him to find the answer.
severus snape who almost died that night.
severus snape who hated that he owed his life to the one person he loathed the most.
severus snape who felt a burst of power as he noticed the way the marauders left him now alone solely because he held the most chrished secret of theirs.
severus snape who felt the same power when he developed the sectumsepra curse.
severus snape who slowly felt himself giving into the whispers of those who claimed that the muggleborns should not live.
somewhere along the way, severus snape who lost himself.
severus snape risked himself for the person he once thought he loved but was self aware enough to know, what he felt now was mere obsession. crazy obsession.
severus snape who was doing so much better, working on himself, until he saw the body of the one oerson he loathed the most with the soul of the only person he's loved.
severus snape who lost himself again in the power he felt making harrys life hell in a way he never could his father's
severus snape who couldve been so much had he not been where he was.
severus snape who couldve doen so much better if he was just a bit stronger.

Do you have any James-centric fic recs?
like NOT with any ships as the main focus preferably? I'm still open to Jily and Prongsfoot, avoiding wolfstar and jegulus for a bit now heh. If any fics fit the description, could you please recommend? Quidditch fanatic shining academic but simultaneously silly goofy and dumb James is my jam. He's adorable. But seriously I'd read any James at the point, there's a scarcity of James content in the fandom 😭
Thank you so much!! Have a great day <3
james centric oneshot of maruders playing a prank (there is wolfstar subtext)
short oneshot of james and sirius mourning euphemia and fleamont together
it's more sirius centric, but i love how james is described in it/his dynamic with sirius. also you're very right about their not being many non-relationship james centric fics
james centric of him dealing with grief of losing his father
that's all i really have at the moment, i'm afraid. most of them are oneshots cause i usually don't have time for longer fics/only really read dorlene long fics or my mutuals' fics
also not to rec my own fics, but i always do when ppl ask me for fic recs cause i'm a bit full of myself. i've got an unrequited prongstail fic i've recently started (peter IS the main pov, but it very much highlights and analyses james and his personality. like d'yknow the great gatsby? peter is the nick, the observer, but james is the gatsby, the centre of the story/the observed- does have jily endgame, but not really centric). i'm also planning a james centric fic about him losing his parents, so ig look out for that in a bit. not sure when i'll post it.

Barty recognized Luna because he saw Pandora in every step she took, that’s a fact. But what about everyone else?
Do you think he saw Regulus when he looked at Draco? Do you think he hated it so much that his punishments for Draco were really just him punishing Regulus and himself?
Do you think he looked at Harry and saw James and Lily? Do you think he looked at Fred and George and recognized Gideon and Fabian? Do you think he looked at Neville and regretted hurting Alice and Frank?
How many times did Barty have to stop himself from calling out their names when their children wore their smiles?

@jegulus-microfic june 4 - knife - 1170 words - cw: knife, blood, sibling angst?, post apocalypse
and welcome to part 3 of lune generating random dates for the jegulus microfic prompts she hasn't done yet
this was supposed to be a little flirty held at knife-point banter but ngl this became somewhat of a character study i think, emjoy?
Regulus retracts the blade and with one swift motion, hauls the stranger around, throwing all his body weight into pressing him into the near wall, and snaps his fist up to hold the knife against their throat.
He goes with a surprised grunt, body tensing under Regulus’ grip but immediately slacking when the smooth brown skin of his neck presses against the cold blade.
There’s a faint shadow of facial hair over a strong jaw and a round nose peeking out from under the hood and everything Regulus can see under the dim light of the candles.
“You move a muscle without me telling you to and you die on the spot,” Regulus warns.
“Woah, now,” the other boy attempts, ducking his head but Regulus just presses the sharp knife in further, eliciting a hiss and a bared throat.
“What did I just say?”
“Yup, got it,” the boy rasps.
Regulus sneers. “Hands up,” he orders, “Slowly.”
Luckily for him, he does as told.
His palms are a few shades lighter and his long sleeve is equally dotted with holes and patches as Regulus’ is. There are holsters on both of his upper arms that are currently empty.
Regulus leans closer when he moves to push back the hood of the boy’s practical vest.
There’s a truly awful bird’s nest of hair underneath, black hair tousled and knotted and so long it flops down over his forehead. Thick eyebrows, a dark freckle above the right and then big doe brown eyes, framed by metal wire glasses.
Regulus swallows a bit.
The taller boy grins. Regulus doesn’t like it.
He angles his knife so that the pointy tip dents slightly into the thin flesh, “Who are you? How did you find our camp?”
The grin turns a bit lop-sided then and the boy cocks his head when he responds, “James.”
“Well ok, James, how did you find our fucking camp?”
James simply looks at him like he’s a bit stupid. Regulus doesn’t appreciate it at all.
“Hey, by the way,” James mumbles off-handedly, leaning into the blade—he’s going to get blood on Regulus freshly washed clothes, “That a gun in your pants or are you just really happy to—”
“Keep fucking around and find out,” Regulus snarls, not particularly concerned with the state of his clothes anymore. Puts more pressure behind the handle and watches it break the brown skin of James’ neck, a line of red that leaks a drop of blood at the end.
James hisses a pained chuckle. Regulus can see his hands tensing and unclenching in his periphery.
Sirius always tells him he’s naive but Regulus is mildly aware of the fact that James could probably overpower him with pure muscle strength alone if he wanted to. Maybe he’s injured? Regulus frankly doesn’t fucking care, he can go find medical supplies elsewhere. They’re nearly out as it is.
James scans his face, licks his lips before he speaks again, “Sirius didn’t tell you, huh?”
Regulus’ eyes narrow, his grip tightening at the lapel of the other’s vest, “How do you know about Sirius?”
“I met him out hunting a few weeks back, I helped him shoot a feral stag. We’ve been meeting up almost daily since, we’re friends.”
Regulus is fuming.
Of course, Sirius wouldn’t tell him. Of course, Sirius wouldn’t want to share. Introduce Regulus, let him be involved. Fucking bastard, Regulus hates him. He’s never going to speak to him again.
James tilts his head again, tearing Regulus from his thoughts, regarding him closely. “Though when he told me about his ‘little brother’ I definitely didn’t picture this.”
There’s something about the combination of James’ sharp, scrutinizing gaze and his soft, slack features that’s dangerously addictive—being subjected to such unfiltered attention.
It makes Regulus kind of want to gag him, tie him up and lock him in his room. All for himself. Finders Keepers. Have a little play date with Sirius’ shiny new toy and then toss it back to his brother over his shoulder when he’s done, when he’s lost interest. Oh and how Regulus would make sure to play with it. Use and abuse, scratch and pull and throw until it chips and threatens to break. See how his brother fucking likes it.
James looks vaguely willing and Regulus is confident he can be persuasive.
His eyes flit back down to the straight cut adorning James’ throat and the corners of Regulus’ lips lift into a smirk.
“Reg, I’m back,” chirped from the front of the greenhouse and Regulus growls. Feels the anger simmering right back up when he catches James’ eyes flitting in the direction of his brother’s voice.
Doesn’t pull away from James when he calls out, “Guess who’s visiting?” Satisfaction coiling low in his gut when James’ gaze lands back on him again.
It’s quiet for a few moments, none of them moving, none of them saying anything. A tense silence, filled with anticipation.
Which Sirius breaks with a sigh, Regulus hears him rounding the corner to come into view, “Listen Reg, I– shit, Regulus!” He storms over and forcefully rips Regulus back by his shirt.
He goes stumbling, catching his bearings as he watches Sirius pat James down as if scanning for more cuts, concern written clearly over his face.
Only turning to Regulus once James has verbally confirmed that he’s okay.
Sirius looks furious, “The fuck do you think you were doing?”
Oh, he has to be kidding.
Regulus scoffs a humorless laugh, “Protecting our home! What did you think you were doing, inviting a stranger to our camp?”
“James is my friend, we can trust him!”
“I literally caught him stealing!”
Sirius gives a frustrated groan, stomps over to the table James had been mucking about and wags the fern that was laying there into Regulus face, “He was bringing plants with healing properties.”
Regulus follows the movements of his brother where he goes to place it back down on the tabletop next to the bowl and mortar.
He’s going to rip his fucking hair out.
“Still that doesn’t mean you can just invite anyone you like over! Did it even cross your mind once to ask me first?”
“I don’t have to! I’m your older brother, I know what—”
“Fuck you,” Regulus explodes. Can’t help himself when he throws the knife into the pillar besides James’ head.
“Regulus!”
“No! Just because you’re older doesn’t mean you get to decide everything by yourself and treat me like a goddamn child—”
“This isn’t even about James anymore, you’re just being a petty idiot right now. If you would just listen—”
Regulus simply turns on his heels and marches off. Snatching an additional coat from the makeshift rack and two more guns.
Sirius sighs heavily, “Where are you going? It’s nearly nightfall.”
“Fuck if you care,” Regulus spits and ducks around the tarpaulin to the exit.
“Maybe I should–”
“No, leave him. He’ll be back.”
Little did his brother know it would be years before he saw Regulus again.

James Potter would would want to be cannibalised by Sirius Black, actually. Whilst he's alive James struggles to reconcile the non-platonic feelings he has for Sirius due to his own internalised homophobia and fear of the vulnerability needed to fully embrace the all-consuming love Sirius has for him. But once James is dead, there's no need to put up a front. He can give himself up to Sirius completely and without shame because, after death, he has no agency. He can stop playing the frightful stag. He can give himself up to the jaws of his loyal guard dog. I imagine the biggest reason for this is that James knows he couldn't give everything Sirius wanted when James was alive (relationship wise). But at the very least he can surrender to him once and for all, and they can finally be one.

Regulus Black is probably the most beautiful person James has ever had the pleasure to know and he has decided that he is going to marry that man if it’s the last thing he ever does on this planet.
Only one problem there: Regulus absolutely despises James. Like, the type of hatred that you can feel blistering on your skin. The type of hatred that feels like a wordless threat that James can feel in the very depths of his soul.
Those eyes, made of crystal and ice and swirling silver storm cut through him like a keen blade and he feels himself bleeding out in front of him whenever they meet his own.
And oh how he bleeds for Regulus…
James would give him every last drop of red within his body if he so pleased. If only it would get him a single smile; just an upward quirk of his lips. And that would be enough.
Regulus doesn’t hate James. He wants to. He really, truly does. But he's come to the conclusion that not a soul alive could ever truly hate James Fleamont Potter. He just makes it impossible by being… well, himself.
But he tries.
Desperately, Regulus tries to cling to any amount of annoyance and dislike and malice he may feel towards him but James simply accepts it all with open arms.
He takes in his cruel words like they’re a gift. He meets Regulus’ cold gaze and smiles warmly enough to melt it at the source. James is fire and hearth; warmth and safety. He is a gentle hand on the shoulder and a cup of tea on a cold mercury morning.
James is color and light and all things good in the world and Regulus craves him.
He hates how desperately he wants him. How fiercely he yearns to allow himself to reach out and touch him; cold fingers stretching towards the last sliver of heat and light as the sun sets below the horizon, drowned out by darkness and night and a scattering of silver stars.
