Lino Printing
This week, I decided to get back into lino printing! I had first tried it out about 7 years ago when I was doing my GCSE’s. I remembered finding it really difficult to cut and far too much effort for the result it gave me, however, I’ve also tried screen printing, monoprinting and intaglio in the past, which I really enjoyed. Here are some examples of the prints I made using those techniques:

Intaglio was my favourite. I really enjoyed the process. However, that was much easier to do when I had a whole printing room with big machines all to myself on my foundation course! After that course ended, I just stopped printing completely - mainly because my new university building didn’t have the facilities. These days, I’m finding myself being drawn to printmaking again. I see illustrations all the time that I really love which have been created using printmaking techniques, and thought it might be time to try it out again. But it needed to be something I could easily do at home without the machinery. I have recently tried foam printing, which I wrote a post on back in January. But this time, I thought I’d give lino a second chance.

For my first attempt at getting back into lino printing, I decided to draw a cat. I roughly sketched out the design onto the lino and started cutting it out. Thankfully, I still had the materials from when I’d tried it out years ago. I found it much more uncomplicated than I remembered it being back in school, and much easier to be precise and add more detail than with foam. When it came to actually printing the lino, I realised that I needed to cut a little deeper into the lino where I’d carved too lightly. I was losing lines and detail in the prints, which you can see below. I think this was also down to the fact that I had pressed too hard in some parts and rolled on too much ink.

After some trial and error, I managed to get a few prints that turned out quite nicely. Overall, I found the whole process really enjoyable! However, I did find it hard trying to press the lino evenly and smoothly. I don't know whether that was just my technique or the lino I bought, but I think I will get better with practise. In the future I’d love to buy some different colour inks to try layering designs. I also think that these prints I created might look good on a greetings card or just as a series of prints, so you might be seeing them on my Etsy soon!

Illustrating for Blogs
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Recently, I was asked by my friend, Charlotte (www.wonderfullybookish.co.uk) to design some illustrations based on a space theme for her blog. She also wanted them to look quite golden. I designed about 10 spot illustrations so that she could then move them around herself to wherever they would fit on her blog. All the illustrations I designed for her are shown above, along with an example of how Charlotte ended up using them on her front page!

A few months later, I ended up drawing some illustrations for Amy’s blog (www.amybucklesbookshelf.co.uk). There wasn’t a theme as such this time, however, Amy gave me a list of her interests and I went from there! The colour theme was pastels so that she could choose colours for her blog around the illustrations.
