Why Zuko didn’t tell the Gaang about his scar
There’s been wide speculation for years about why Zuko didn’t tell the Gaang about how he got his scar in the series. The consensus is that they didn’t have time, which is strange because the answer is rather obvious.
If Katara found out, she’d go out of her way to kill Ozai herself, and her next field trip with Zuko would be to the Fire Nation castle on a full moon to crush Ozai’s heart in his chest with her bloodbending.
But that would completely negate the need for Aang to restore balance and learn energy bending in the finale to avoid killing Ozai.

ugh okay i get that toph is a) extremely powerful and b) rejects traditional gender roles but she is NOT a brute. her whole deal is that her earthbending technique isn’t like the mainstream approach of using sheer force to attack. the reason she beats the boulder so easily isn’t because she’s physically stronger than him (she very obviously is not!) but because she waits and she listens. that’s the whole reason aang decides to recruit her as his teacher. because she is uniquely creative, perceptive, thoughtful, patient, and intelligent. she enjoys fighting and she’s really, really good at it, she’s sassy, she’s forthright, and she delights in being kind of disgusting in a way she wasn’t allowed to be growing up, but she’s also empathetic, understanding, and vulnerable. by ignoring that you are doing a huge disservice to what makes her character so incredible in the first place. thank you

Could you write a Sokka x firebender reader that has the plot of the secret tunnel episode but instead of aang and katara getting stuck together it’s him and reader? :)
Don’t Let the Cave In Get You Down
a/n: got two requests for this sokka storyline and i was very excited to write it! i couldn’t find a way to seamlessly include the fire bending part of the request but i could definitely build on that in another piece. hope you enjoy <3
Tumblr media
you met the Gaang when they were passing through a small trading village on the outskirts of the Earth Kingdom
they were low on supplies and in need of a shopping spree, so they stopped at your little food stand in search of fresh fruit and snacks for their travels
you seemed awfully young to have your own business, especially when compared to the other merchants, but you were kind and your prices were affordable
their shopping spree was cut short by the arrival of fire nation soldiers, but you quickly escorted them through the backstreets of the marketplace and helped them evade the soldiers
“That was a close call,” Aang breathed out in relief, “thanks for your help.”
“Those guys are jerks, I couldn’t live with myself if I had just let them capture you.”
“Who are you?” Katara asked in awe.
“My name is y/n, and I’ve been hiding out in this village for about three years now. I escaped from the Fire Nation when I was 12 and never looked back.”
“Wait a minute, Fire Nation?!” Sokka exclaimed before quickly pushing his sister and Aang behind him. Raising his boomerang in a threatening manor, he narrowed his eyes at you. “Is this some kind of trick?! Did you just lure us out here so you could capture Aang and get the reward for yourself?”
“Sokka, you’re being ridiculous!” Katara had scolded angrily, harshly pushing his boomerang away. “She said herself she came here to get away from the Fire Nation, I’m sure she’s just trying to make a better life for herself here and you’re not making that any easier for her by being a jerk!”
“I don’t trust her, Katara!”
You’re a little disheartened by the disdain in his voice when he speaks about you, and despite Katara vouching for you you can see that you’re out of place
“I’m sorry, I’ve made things awkward,” you apologized sheepishly, “I’ll leave you now.”
“Wait!” Aang called, stopping you from going. “If what you said is true then… then I think you should come with us.”
“Tell me you’re joking,” Sokka scoffed in disbelief
“If she’s from the Fire Nation then she must have knowledge about the ins and outs of that place. Maybe she can even help me find a fire bending master. We need her help, Sokka.”
Though he was reluctant and very distrusting of you, Sokka realized Aang was right, so he begrudgingly allowed the airbender to welcome you to their team
You agreed to help as much as you can, and the rest was history
From there on out you’re officially a member of Team Avatar, but that doesn’t mean Sokka becomes any more trusting of you
He always keeps a suspicious eye on you, never letting you help with tasks he deems too important to avoid having you “sabotage” the group
His lack of trust in you hurts, you can’t lie about that, but you continue to do what you can to aid the Avatar and his friends and earn their trust
Of course, this all changes when you get to the cave of two lovers
Unlike Sokka, you found Chong and his group of Nomads to be great fun. They’d braided your hair beautifully with flowers from the lake and performed wonderful songs, so despite your predicament you were in a cheerful mood
Being stuck in the cave had put a strain on your group’s mission to make it to Omashu, but you tried to remain hopeful and help as best as you can
Surprisingly, Sokka even puts you in charge of holding one of the torches
“I’m only giving this to you because I know you’re at least smart enough not to waste resources while we’re in here.”
It’s a start
And it’s a good thing he gave you that torch, because it comes in handy when you both end up getting separated from the rest of the group
“This is just great,” Sokka utters sarcastically after several failed attempts to dig through the rock and get back to the others.
“Come on, Sokka, lighten up. We have a torch and your map, I’m sure we’ll be able to figure something out,” you try to console. “What did Chong say earlier? ‘Don’t let the cave in get you down, Sokka.’”
He’s not amused by your singing
It’s a bit awkward being stuck with the boy who’s been so adamant that you don’t belong despite your best efforts to prove that you can be trusted
You don’t speak much and try to stay out of his way and follow his lead, but the tunnels keep changing and you keep getting lost and your torch is about to burn out, so things are beginning to seem hopeless
“Maybe we should try changing our strategy,” you offer only for Sokka to immediately dismiss you.
“Right, like I’m going to let you lead us through the cave. You’ll probably make us get lost on purpose.”
“You know, if you stopped being so judgmental for a second you’d probably realize that i want to get out of this cave just as much as you do!” You snap irritably, surprising Sokka. you’ve mostly stayed docile to try and keep the peace whenever Sokka accuses you of being untrustworthy, but at this point you’re finally starting to get fed up
“You’re right, I’m sorry,” he says softly, and this time you’re the one who’s surprised. You never thought he’d actually apologize to you, and it’s a nice feeling. “What do you suggest we do?”
“Well,” you start with a sigh, “maybe the story is right. Maybe if we trust in love, we’ll find our way out of here.”
“You’re joking, right?”
“Do you have any better ideas?”
You simply shrug, prompting Sokka to let out a heavy sigh. Your torch is going to run out soon, and his map isn’t doing anyone any favors. It seems you have no choice
“How exactly do we trust in love?”
“I’m not sure… the only love I know is the love I had from my parents, but I haven’t felt it in so long… I’m not sure I ever will again.”
“…What happened to them?”
“My parents were peasants with nothing but love to give each other. They were poor, but they were happy,” you explain with a faint smile. “My father was a fire bender, but he kept his gift hidden in fear he’d be forced to serve in the Fire Nation army. He didn’t want to leave me or my mother, but our home was attacked, and he had no choice but to bend to protect us. Our lives were saved, but he was taken away.”
Sokka hangs on to your every word, eyes glistening with unshed tears and sympathy. Your story is similar to his own, and he knows what it’s like to lose your family to the Fire Nation. He feels less disdain towards you now, more empathetic. He still isn’t 100% sure how to feel about you, but hearing your story makes you easier to understand now
“My mother knew I’d never be safe or happy if I stayed there, so she arranged for me to be smuggled out of the Fire Nation and brought to the trading village you first met me in. I haven’t seen or heard from her since, and I’m not even sure if she or my father are even alive.”
“I’m sorry,” Sokka utters solemnly. “Katara and I lost our mother to the Fire Nation, and we haven’t seen our father since he left to fight in the war. I know how you feel.”
“I don’t want to be Fire Nation, you know. None of this was a choice, and I understand why you don’t trust me but I’m not like them Sokka. Please believe me.”
“I’m sorry for always giving you such a hard time. It’s just… it’s hard to believe people from the Fire Nation can actually be good. But you’ve proven that you can be trusted over and over again, I was just too blind to see it.”
“Can we start over?” He asks with a sheepish smile, carefully sticking his hand out for you to shake. Instead, you push his hand away and throw your arms around him in a tight embrace.
The force of your hug knocks him back a bit, and though he’s unsure at first, he eventually returns your embrace by carefully wrapping his arms around your figure
The fire of your torch slowly begins to die, but neither of you seem to notice or care as you enjoy your moment together
You expect to be engulfed in darkness when the flame goes out, but instead you’re met with the beautiful shimmers of the crystals that line the roofs of the cave
“It’s so beautiful,” you murmur in awe, your eyes sparkling under the light
“Yeah,” your counterpart utters quietly, but he isn’t looking at the crystals
“Was she always this pretty?” Sokka wondered to himself
Together, you’re eventually able to follow the crystals and make your way out of the cave
And when you leave the cave, hands woven tightly together, you leave as two completely new people
You understand each other now, you trust each other
And your relationship will only continue to grow stronger from then on out

what exactly is Aang's toxic masculinity that you're talking about? there are no examples of such behavior on his part in the show. he is not an ideal person, he is a child who sometimes behaved incorrectly, just like all the other children in the show (Katara, Toph, Sokka), and this is normal.
in addition, we see how he regrets some of his wrong actions and gets better, while Zuko does not regret his toxic behavior, doesn't apologize and doesn't face the consequences of his behavior (racist jokes about Aang, demands that Katara forgive him as if he has the right to her forgiveness, an attack on Aang to "teach him a lesson" and many other things).
Hi anon, thanks for the ask! This is a very good illustration of what I was talking about in this post when I mentioned that I feel toxic men are overlooked more often for appearing “nice” than they are for being conventionally attractive.
No examples of toxic behavior in the show? What do you call this then?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know what I (and the law) call it:
Tumblr media
But you see, he’s “nice” right? This is just a misbehaved child, as you put it? Yah, no. He knew better and still did it because he was possessive; this whole interaction started because he was jealous that an actress playing Katara was interested in men other than him. And the show proceeded to frame the situation in a way that made Aang sympathetic, despite being the aggressor and the one behaving irrationally. How much more “toxically masculine” can you get than that? But he put on a flower crown once so we’re supposed to think he’s a soft uwu feminine boi (even though he was absolutely enraged that a female actress played him).
I also find it very interesting that you describe Katara and Sokka as “children” while Zuko is omitted from that list despite being the same age. Are you admitting you agree he’s more mature, or are you admitting that you hold him to different standards?
But, anyways. You asked about toxic behavior on Aang’s part, which I’ll get further into now that the most egregious example is out of the way.
Let’s break down what you consider unforgivably toxic behavior on Zuko’s part and compare it to Aang’s behavior in similar situations.
1. “Racist” jokes
I’m guessing this is made with reference to the “Air Temple preschool” comment. How exactly is this racist? In context, Aang is the one trying to force his beliefs on others, and Zuko makes this comment to a) tell him to back off and b) point out that Aang is, in fact, a child who doesn’t have any business telling Katara how to feel.
This point is particularly interesting to me, because it implies that the simple fact that Zuko doesn’t agree with the philosophy of Aang’s culture makes him racist. By this logic, Aang is also racist against Katara’s culture, because he clearly disagrees with her philosophy and is openly telling her that his culture is morally virtuous over hers. And well. That’s even more believable considering Aang’s previous reactions to Water Tribe culture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ah, yes. Playing with a cultural artifact like it’s a toy because you were upset about not being the center of attention for once, and telling everyone how disgusting you think cultural food is, what great ways to show the supposed love of your life how much you respect her culture!
I know your response to this point would be something like “uwu but he’s a kid he didn’t knowww” ok well. The same logic can be applied to any alleged “racism” on Zuko’s part.
2. “Demanding” forgiveness
Tumblr media
Zuko: What can I do to make it up to you?
Ah, yes. How demanding of him. He’s clearly so self-centered and only thinking about his own values and agenda here.
It’s not like he…
Tumblr media
…told his friend how she’s allowed to process her grief and try to impose his own morals…
Tumblr media
…or demanded to know if his crush liked him back, wouldn’t accept “no” as an answer, and forced a kiss on her…
Tumblr media
…or told an abuse victim he was wrong to want to kill his abusive father for trying to commit a genocide…
…oh, um. Yeah. Sorry, but after actually watching the show it’s very clear to me which character doesn’t seem to regret or see the flaws in any of his actions at the end of the show, which is when all of these examples took place.
3. Training in the finale
“Attacking Aang to teach him a lesson” … wow, that’s a very dishonest way of phrasing that situation. I’m impressed, I have to say. I’ve seen lots of dumb takes from Aang stans over the years but this is a new one.
Well, luckily I actually watched the scene in context, so my reaction was the same as all the other characters’ reactions in canon when they learned the context behind this “attack”:
Tumblr media
They agree with him. Yeah. Obviously, when nobody is taking training seriously when the world is about to literally go up in flames, you might need to do something to get their attention.
“But it was dangerous!” you might argue. Well… yeah. When magic and bending is in the equation, training in the Avatar universe has been shown to be somewhat dangerous at times. As an example, from this very same episode, Toph very nearly smashed Sokka with a giant flaming rock. That was way closer to hurting someone than Zuko was in this incident. If you’re going to fault characters for making their training exercises too dangerous, I guess Toph is mega cancelled.
Now back to Aang. What was his reaction in this situation? How did he react to the end of the world being days away? He ran away with absolutely no plan. Just like he did at the very beginning of the show.
I mean, think about it. This is a critical flaw (and toxic trait) in Aang that is literally never addressed, because he starts and ends the show the exact same way: he’s faced with a problem, he runs away from it, then he’s saved by an in-universe equivalent of an Act of God. Wowie, such great character development. Not fixing your core flaw and having a mythical plot device materialize into existence to solve your problems for you. Aang’s whole arc is a big blah, because the writing fails to address any of his flaws or have him meaningfully question any of his values.
Meanwhile, Zuko has consistently been a fan favorite because he’s the opposite. His flaws are meaningfully addressed, he does admit he’s wrong and fix his flaws, and his character shows a critically acclaimed change throughout the show. His arc is written so well that despite being a cartoon character, Zuko is widely considered the poster child for a good redemption arc across all forms of media.
So anyways, miss me with the double standards… there is a reason why Zuko is the fan favorite, and it’s not just his abs 🔥

@zutaraweek day 3: union
a little follow up to this comic i did last year. i really liked the idea of union in a political context and this was a very round about way of that. like, a little tongue in cheek with all the different kids from different nations just sort of talking and gossiping together. teens doing teen stuff despite their high profile roles in society, that type of thing.
initially this comic was a lot more ambitious but some complications happened in my life which made me have to chip away at a lot of it. such as having it in full color, with backgrounds. there's been a lot of thought put into the world of the chief kya au, though! particularly related to yue that is not featured at all asdfghjk.
the more i worked on it, the more i got worried zuko might be a little ooc. but i was a bit inspired by crystal catacombs and the softness he had there. whenever i try to write him in this au, he's just usually just happy to be around katara so i'm just going to let him do what he wants.
Anyway, a transcript along with brief image descriptions is beneath the cut under my obligatory art links as well as in the alt text of the art!
art only blog - insta - inprnt - redbubble
Page 1: Zuko and Katara are at a gathering for those invited to the peace accords which seems to be more packed then usual.
Katara: Wow, there’s a lot of people here Zuko: Yeah. There’s a lot of people this year. K: I don’t recognize anyone yet. Z: Oh! I can help you. Z: That’s Mai. Her father is an official. Z: She’s Suki. Leader of the Kyoshi Warriors. Z: And next to her is- K: Yue!
Page 2: Katara and Yue hug and the teens (Zuko, Yue, Katara, and Suki) all chat.
Yue: Katara! K: I missed you! Y: I’m so happy to see you! have never spoken more than hellos was just trying to chat with Yue awkward turtle duck Z: So you do know someone. K: We’ve known each other since we were kids. Lu Ten: Prince Zuko?
Page 3: Lu Ten appears, Yue and Suki gossip, and Katara's a bit sad as Zuko leaves with Lu Ten to handle business elsewhere.
Z: Lu Ten? L: Sorry to interrupt, but can I steal you? Z: Is it important? L: Unfortunately. L: They seem nice. I’m happy you’re making friends.
Page 4: The girls gossip and Mai overhears.
Y: I didn’t know you knew Zuko. Suki: Yeah. Do you know anything about the scar? K: I don’t really know him. We just met. What do you guys know? Mai: No one actually knows. M: About the scar. They kept it quiet.
Page 5: There's a small flashback to Zuko at 14 after receiving his scar, the girls continue to talk, and there's a final panel of Ozai, alluding to a family secret.
M: He just went away for a while. And then he came back and there it was. M: That’s all anyone knows. Except Zuko. K: That’s awful. There has to be more. M: Well…people have some suspicions.

Zuko x reader - one more time
Tumblr media
Hey can I get a Zuko x reader where the it’s Legend of Korra era but what it is is that Korra or Bolin just anyone in the main group ask about his past s/o who was the reader and he talks about them in a sad old man way taking about his deceased lover 😭 thank you - Anon 💜
Korra had been trying to figure everything out, and she realised the only connection she had to Aang, the one that knew him when he was going through the same thing was Zuko.
So she visited him, and spent as much time as she could asking questions, asking for advice and help.
“I’m sorry Korra, but this is not something I’m so good at, (Y/N) was better at giving advice than I ever could have hoped to be.”
“(Y/N)? You’re partner?” Korra asked.
Zuko nodded his head and gestured for her to follow him.
He led her through a lavish garden, nearly cared for, and when they reached the middle he showed her a large statue and Korra stared at it.
You were absolutely stunning, you looked young, beautiful, elegant, yet powerful and a fair ruler.
“Wait.. I think.. I think I spoke to them. In the spirit realm.”
“You did?”
They both sat down in the bench opposite the statue of you.
“Yeah, they were the one that told me to come speak to you, that you would know what to do.” She said.
Zuko smiled and chuckled softly as he stared up at the statue in fondness.
“They always said I knew what to do, even if I didn’t realise it straight away.”
Korra looked at the former fire Lord, and she looked up at the statue of you.
“What were they like?” She asked softly.
Zuko smiled softly, turning his head to the floor before he looked back up at the statue.
“They were… they were strong, stubborn, like Katara, but peaceful and loving like Aang. They saw the beauty in everything around, but they were one of the bravest people I had ever met.”
Korra listened carefully as Zuko told her all about you.
He told her stories from when you two first met, how you had left the nation to fight with Aang, and you would always mock him for not being able to defeat you.
Then how he fell in love with you, on the day of the war ended, while he was fighting with his sister you risked your life for not only Katara, but for him too.
He loved your stubbornness, and your smiled that could light up a room on the darkest night.
“They were more then anything I could’ve ever asked for, they gave me the love and the forgiveness I never have asked for from anyone else…”
Zuko sighed, running his finger alone the lone wedding band on his finger.
“They were the love of my life and more…”
Korra reached out, placing her hand on his arm, making him look at her.
“You’ve done them proud, they told me how proud they were of you, and how much they miss you.” She said.
He smiled softly and looked at her.
“Really?”
“Yeah, of course.”
He nodded his head and looked at your statue before turning to the young avatar.
“Do you think you can talk to them again?”
“I.. don’t know. Maybe.”
“If you do please give them this. I was going to give it to them on the our anniversary before they passed, I’ve carried it ever since.”
He handed over an old letter, and she took it, slipping it into her pocket.
“Of course, will you tell me more about them?”
Zuko smiled and carried on talking, and Korra just sat there listened to his stories.
She knew he was lonely, she heard from Katara how you were never without one another.
To loose your lover so early and have to go on through life without them? She couldn’t imagine how lonely and how painful it must be.
She heard the way he talked, the sadness in his voice, the tears brimming his eyes as all he could do was stare at the statue.
Korra looked at the statue and she saw something behind it, and all she could do was stare at the spirit.
She didn’t need to compare the looks to know immediately who it was.
She watched as you walked over and sat in front of your statue, resting your elbow on your knee, and you rested your chin on your palm as you smiled at Zuko.
“Ask him to tell you about the time he proposed to me.” You whispered softly.
“Can you tell me about the time your proposed to (Y/N)?”
“You really want to hear about that?”
Katara flicked her eyes to your spirit, and you gently nodded your head.
“I.. (Y/N) wants to hear it.”
“They’re here?”
Zuko knew the avatar could see spirits, talk with them, and he knew since the spirit realm was opened more and more were pouring through.
He never thought that you would come through though.
“They’re here…” she smiled.
Zuko looked around and Korra pointed to where you were sat, and all she could do was smile as he smiled to himself.
“It was supposed to be elegant, I had a large ball planned, everyone was invited, everyone was waiting for me. (Y/N) wore the most beautiful clothes you had ever seen, made out the finest silk you could ever see. I was walking down the stairs, and I tripped, falling the rest of the way and I knocked (Y/N) over along the way.” He laughed.
You laughed as well and nodded your head.
“I was so embarrassed I quickly left and (Y/N) followed me, out to this very garden and we stood in very spot. They kissed me, and told me that it was okay, and I asked them there and then if they would marry me.”
He twisted the wedding band on his finger.
“They teased me and kept putting off the answer, and I went to walk away thinking it was them rejecting me… I tripped again…”
“But they said yes.” Korra smiled.
“They did. But not before laughing at me first.” He chuckled.
Korra watched as his face turned to sadness.
“It was the best marriage I could’ve ever ask for… but they got sick… they tried to fight, to hold on but they wouldn’t do it anymore. They passed away in their sleep, they never got to watch our children grow up, they never saw the kingdoms grow closer.”
Korra couldn’t handle it anymore, she knew she shouldn’t do this, but she felt like she owed it to Zuko, for everything he’d done.
“Close your eyes.” She said softly.
Zuko did as he was told and she placed a hand on his head, whispering something she stepped away.
“I.. I don’t know how long it’ll last, but I hope this helps.”
She handed him the letter he gave her and stepped a few steps back, watching him open his eyes and he stared directly at you.
He smiled and you stood up, walking over to touch his face.
Maybe she was breaking a lot of rules, but Korra knew he was breaking inside without you, he’d been so alone without you for so long she wanted him to have some time with you, even if it was just a few minutes

hiii! first of all just wanna say how much i love your writing <3
could i please request a zuko x lightningbender!reader scenario/hc where the reader is a part of the gaang and she used to be best friends with zuko when they were little? and then he joins and they finally catch up after everything? thank you!
‘This doesn't change anything,’- Zuko x female!reader
Masterlist <3
An: yeah i wrote this MANY times before i was happy with it, which is why it took ages IM SO SORRY also THANK YOU <333
Summary:
LIghtning bender reader who is Zuko's former BFF now kinda hates him but he's determined to get on her good side.
Warnings: opening up, insulting eachother.
honestly
It was so awkward
You refused to speak to him if it wasn’t strictly professional
The poor boy tried so hard
When he pleased katara but not u he was so sad
He would try to sit next to you by the campfire to eat and you would just dip
He’d have that sad 🙁 look on his face and the gang would be like “it’s okay man.”
ITS NOT OKAY!!! He couldn’t sleep because he missed u so much and seeing u in person was like, taking a toll on him
He was so entranced by you and your little mannerisms. You’d grown so much and gotten cuter since he last saw you (which he didn’t even think was possible). He especially loved when you played with lighting in your fingers
It was like, when someone else did it it was evil and dangerous, but when you did it it was lovely and cozy
You just had that effect on him
The first time you two were able to speak was when you had taken the reigns on Appa to allow the others to rest. He was stargazing when your voice broke him out of a trance.
“You’re a real pain, you know that Zuko?”
He sat up suddenly, looking at you from his spot. You were leaning back, yawning as you stretched on the mammals fur.
“I mean, you come here, barge into this little group, and expect me to be nice to you. Fire nation royals and their audacity.” You said matter-of-factly, your tone so relaxed, completely going against what you were saying.
“I don’t expect that. I just want you to hear me out.”
“I’ve heard you enough,” he recalled moments where he’d rant for hours on hours to you, and you would lend an unwavering open ear, and inviting open arms.
“Yeah,” he replied sadly, sliding down next to you. You scooted over.
“And what if I pushed you?”
“You wouldn’t,”
“Or would I?” You smirked, “but this time instead of a face full of pool water, you’ll pop like a balloon,” the shrubs reminded you of spikes.
“I’m not sure that’s how human bodies work,” he mumbled playfully.
“Oh what? Just because you went to private school?”
“Yn we went to the same school,” you opened your mouth, before shrugging as you couldn’t think of a response.
He rolled his eyes with a smirk, they landed back on you.
You shivered slightly, you were pretty good at your fire bending, but lacked when it came to warmth. Though you can expel a mean red flame, you can’t regulate your body temperature quite right. Smoothly, he put an arm around you, pulling you closer to him.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
“Keeping you warm,” Zuko replied, an intense look on his eyes, contrasting the sweet smile playing on his lips.
“Smooth,” you grinned, your brain going fuzzy, then immediatly frowned. “This doesn’t change anything between us.”
He slumped a fraction, almost missable, but you caught it. The fire bender nodded.
He rested his head back on the fur, looking distantly into the stars. From your angle, Zuko’s jaw was sharp, and his side profile was alluring. You couldn’t help but rest your head on him. Contradicting your previous statement- there was something so entrancing about him. Feeling your stare, he met your eyes, a certain- almost unreadable- look behind his irises.
“Then what would?” He asked quietly.
You paused, thinking for a second. “I don’t know,”
He sighed defeatedly, throwing his head back again. “Understandable,”
You remained silent as a response. He clicked his tongue.
“Do you remember,” Zuko paused, as if trying to find the words. “Do you remember love amongst dragons?”
You grinned, “As if I could forget. Lady Ursa took us every time,” you giggled.
You enjoyed the play and all it’s weird quirks, Zuko however, did not. He would complain, and complain, and complain until you'd shushed him harshly when the main characters would share their kiss. He found you annoying, in a weird, endearing way.
He scrunched his nose, “it wasn’t even a good play,”
“Just say you hate love,”
‘Well then I’d be lying,’ he thought.
“I don’t hate love,”
“Oh sorry hate is a strong word. Despise?”
He snorted, “Not that either,”
“Huh. That would mean the spoiled prince actually loved love.”
“Maybe not love. Mildly enjoy.”
“Isn’t that literally the same thing?”
“Depends, I love fruit tarts, I mildly enjoy fire flakes.”
“Hmm.” You pondered, “I love Appa,” you grinned down at the beast, then back up to Zuko, “I mildly enjoy your company.”
A pink dust rose to his cheeks, that sweet smile from earlier returning to grip onto your heart strings, “I’ll take it.” He said quietly.
“I wonder if they still show the play,” you hummed.
“Well, we’ll find out soon enough,” you were on course to the esteemed ember island estate, and you’d be lying if you said you weren’t excited.
“Well then I wonder if they changed the casting,”
“I doubt anyone would wanna partake in that, the ember island players literally suck so bad,”
“Oh c’mon, didn’t you cry that one time when the characters reunited?”
The boy looked like a deer caught in headlights, he was secretly hoping you’d forgotten about it, “It was a sad moment,” he pouted.
You leaned forward and pinched his cheeks, “Sure it was, wittle zuko can’t handle a little sap,” you giggled.
He swatted your hand away, “you’re a bully,” he scoffed.
“Guess that makes the two of us,” you sighed out.
basically, that was what finally made you two start talking
No, the gang didn’t know, you refused to treat him like a human when they were awake. But you softened up when they were asleep.
Zuko will admit he found it odd, but hey, talking in secret is better than no talking right?
He seemed lighter and more open when he started catching up and reliving childhoods with you
It felt like you were finally letting him into your concrete house, despite him having to force his way in at the beginning.
You were surprised when he opened up to you about things he never has with others, fond memories of his mother, even sometimes with his sister or father.
Despite your hatred for him, you couldn’t help but find yourself entranced by the way he spoke. His voice had a certain lull in it, a rasp accenting his words, the same words he struggled to find.
You yourself found it was easier to speak to him than some others, on nights where you both sat vulnerable, only protection being each other's promises.
You confessed to having a small crush on him as kids, shocked to find it used to be reciprocated.
You reminisced on times where you’d tease Zuko, and the times he’d finally stand up for himself against you
When the moon was highest in the sky, the secrets and such came further to light. He admitted he still felt like a bad guy in the end of the day, in his younger days, Zuko had never been the good guy.
You assured him people change, like the tides, like the weather, like the seasons.
(You refrained from mentioning his hair, it seemed like an inappropriate time to make fun of him)
He expressed to you times where he had travelled with his uncle, all their journeys and detours, and you did the same with your gang trips and adventures.
From the little things like Sokka being covered in Appa’s snot, to larger things like injuries and nightmares
Slowly, you turned from two people who tolerate each-other, to two people who actually really love each other.
Of course, NEVER EVER EVER would you admit that, but it was true.
The unfortunate time for the battle came, you took the road with Sokka, Toph and Suki. Assisting them with your lightning wad no easy task, it was exhausting and exhilarating all at the same time. Usually, you’d limit yourself to 3-4 shots a day, by the 10th minute, you were on 12. Your body was shaking and weak, but you pushed on, even though you knew your life was on the line.
After the long and tedious battle with all those soldiers, the sky turned blue, and you knew it was over, you had won the war.
You stumbled to the group, Sokka’s leg was hurt pretty bad and you didn’t want to take the attention off of him. Each step felt like your body was ablaze, and you held back noises of discomfort.
When you’d finally reached the gang, and exchanged hugs with everyone else, you stopped at Zuko. Mumbled, “I still hate you,” and then engulfed him in a hug so tight - you didn’t even know you were capable of it.
Everyone else was in shock at the sight, they were sure you hated him, but oh well, it’s better than hearing you complain again.
While they conversed, you felt yourself begin to lose consciousness.
You rested your head against him, loosening your grip and your vision went dark.
You were out for about 5 minutes before you regained consciousness. You were still in the same position, except by this time, everyone was looking at you concerned. Katara placed her palm on your forehead.
“I’m ok. Just tired.” You mumbled quietly.
You were suddenly aware of how close you were to the fire bender, immediately moving back and laughing nervously. Almost falling if not for Toph pushing you back to your feet.
You could see him deflate slightly.
“Thanks Zuko,” you punctuated it with a forced laugh.
“Yeah it’s cool,” he nodded, frowning.
As you all walked back to Appa, you found that you and him fell behind the group, walking at nearly the same pace.
“How much lightning did you use?”
“Do you think I was getting burned alive and counting?”
He chuckled, “I guess not, but you seem tired,”
“Doesn’t take a genius to figure that one out,”
He smiled at you, nearing to try to assist you in walking. You quickly put a hand up, smiling at him and his cute little frowny face. He tilted his head to the side.
You slipped your hand into his, immediately feeling his body temperature get knocked up a few notches.
After a few more steps, you looked over to Appa as they climbed. Just as no one was looking, you walked up to him, and gave him a gentle kiss on the lips.
Then took a few steps towards the beast.
“Zuko,” he looked at you from his spot, still dazed, “this still doesn’t change anything between us.”
All the fire bender could do was laugh.
An: HI if u requested im starting soon hopefully <3

Bye, bye bending
Sokka x fem!reader
Summary-you make your last stand almost ending in tragedy, as your recovering something unexpected happens
Warnings- nothing really
Not proofread
Tumblr media
You are using all of your energy to keep the fire from reaching your friends, who are all exhausted behind you. The fire nation solders sprung a surprise attack and all of you are running out of energy, there are still so many solder. They cornered you and have been sending nonstop fire your way. You are starting to see spots st the edge of your vision, already exhausted from your previous battle, cuts and bruises lined your body.
This is your last stand, your last chance, you can be the hero this time to save your friends. You can feel yourself slipping-preparing to send one last burst of your fire bending energy. You look back qt Sokka, he looks scared but has a brave face on, standing in front of the others with his sword out protectively.
Sokka makes eye contact with you and you can feel yourself break. Just one look and he knows what you’re going to do.
“Y/n don’t!” He screams
You just look at him-not quite ready to let go
“I’m sorry! I love you!” You yell back to him.
You look at the task ahead of you, the five fire benders still shooting continuous fire at you, your fire shield could not hold much longer. Searching deep inside yourself, you summon all the energy you have left. You shoot a huge burst of flame out at all of them.
You see the soldiers all fall to the ground as you go down with them-kind of poetic fire nation being your beginning and end. You hear a scream, it might be yours, your not to sure. The black at the edge of your vision starts to get bigger and bigger, you can feel yourself slipping away. You want to give in let the pain wash over you and leave you alone in your unconsciousness. The last thing you see is Sokkas face, tears falling freely, leaning over you.
“Just hang on Y/n! Hang in there, you’re going to be ok. Hey! Stay awake, stay with me! Please.”-he yells to you, but your vision caves and his pleas fall on deaf ears.
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
You awake in a tent to hushed voices from outside, your head is pounding, your whole body hurts.
“Is she going to be ok.”
“I did everything i could we just have to wait and see, its all up to her now.”
“Katara i cant loose her, I-“
You bolt up, trying to get to Sokka, you dont want him to worry. However yoh can see the darkness coming back, and you underestimated how injured you still were and as soon as you stood up, you fell. Right on your face. How embarrassing, you just hope no one ever sees you like this.
But someone comes rushing in, forever embarrassing you as you cant even role over to your back. It doesn’t matter because someone picks you up and lies you back down on the sleeping bag.
“Y/n?” And you can tell its Sokka, he sounds sad, you wonder why.
“Mjmfbr”you croak trying to speack
“Shhh, go back to sleep. You need rest.”
And to sleep you went.
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
You wake up finally feeling well rested. Your eyes opening fully for the first time in who knows how long. You realize someone is holding your hand. Yoh look up to find Sokka. Who then notices your awake and rushes closer to you-if that was ever possible.
“Areyouokyouhaxmesoeorriedwedideverythingwecouldtotryandsaveyoubutweweren’tsureifyouwouldmakeitandivebeensoworriedand-“
“Sokka” you laugh and then wince a little bit. “I cant understand a word you just said.”
“Well, i just-i just missed you that’s all”
“How long have i been out?”
He hesitated “..three days..?”
“THREE DAYS” you screamed “what have i missed”
“Not much, we havent gone anywhere because you were in a critical condition so we couldn’t move you. All you’ve really missed is Katara yelling st me to leave you and ‘go sleep’ like i would ever be able to sleep with you like this”
It was only then you realized how tired he looked. “You mean…you haven’t slept at all?!”
“Well-i couldn’t-i was worried about you.”
You smiled “well im ok now, so you need to get some rest.” You say as you pull him down into the sleeping bag with you.
“But-“
“No buts you need sleep.” You whispered, soon you heard light snoring and new he was asleep, you let yourself fall into the dark void once again.
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
Almost a week later and you were good as new, you got back on your training schedule, and life went back to normal. Except for one thing.
Your fire bending. It was gone. It wasn’t burnt out, and you weren’t just tired and not able to use it. It was gone. You could feel it. Almost like a part of you was missing.
At first you tried to hide it from the Gaang, but as usual they suspected something was wrong.
Katara say you could always tell her if something was wrong.
Aang would offer to take you on a ride on Appa to cheer you up.
Toph would look at you and make weird faces when you said you were fine, because unsurprisingly its jot easy to lie to someone with a built in lie detector.
Sokka tried to cheer you up either jokes, he did anything to put a smile on your face. And when you kept silent and stared blankly inti the distance, he realized something really was wrong.
So he did what any sensible boyfriend would do and cornered you to get some answers.
“Are you sure your ok” he says when you two are out collecting firewood.
“Of course” you say blankly.
“Ok-you know you can always talk to me.”
“I know”
Ten minutes go by.
“Ok thats enough of that he says turning to you.
“Enough of what?”
“Something’s wrong, i can feel it, will you please just tell me what it is”
You stay silent for a while until tou cant take his pestering anymore. You finally break.
“Ok fine! Something wrong”
“Ah-ha! I knew it. What is it.” He stops walking and turns to you.
“I just-I-well” you weren’t quite sure how ti say it. It was almost like saying it made it true.
“I LOST MY FIRE BENDING” you finally yelled out.
He just stared at you for a minute. And then he realized you were serious.
“Wait, how do you ‘loose’ your fire bending. Are you sure you’re not just tired? Maybe it will come back in a few days?”
“No, it’s gone. I can feel it, theres no spark, no energy, nothing!”
“Oh”
“Oh? OH? Thats almost you have to say? I just lost a part of myself! I just lost the inly thing keeping me on this team! Now that i cant fire bend Aang doesn’t have a teacher anymore! We didn’t even get to start the basics! You guys wont need me anymore! Ill have to-“
“Hey” he says calmly gently cuping your face. “We didn’t just want you on this team because you could fire bend, we wanted you for you. And im sure we can find something else for you to do. I could teach you the sword? We could train together!”
“That would be nice” you smiled, “ he always knew how to calm you down.
“And if you’re missing a part of yourself maybe i can fill that gap.” He says smiling.
You smile back: “I love you”
“I love you too.” He admires you for a minute and then- “can i kiss you?”
You nod and he closes the gap. And suddenly you dont care about your fire bending, or your role on the team. All you care about is Sokka. With him by your side, you won’t need fire bending. You have your missing part.

Zuko x chubby reader
Mentions: body shaming, foul language, angst, aggression, lying, fluff?!
Simple! :) sorry for errors.
“You look very beautiful y/n.” Katara mentioned "Thanks. I decided it's time for a change." You replied. Katara's complement made you blush. Sokka was surprisingly good at cutting hair. He gave it layers and added braids that held your hair back. “ I agree with Katara” Mai spoke. You instantly felt horrible with the new hairstyle. Mai isn’t the one to express her feelings so that comment made you believe otherwise. Perhaps cutting your hair shouldn't have crossed your mind.
Aang noticed you playing with the charm bracelet you wore. It tells him a lot about how you feel. He noticed you'd touch a certain charm with the emotion you were feeling, such as anger, happiness, sadness, anxiety, etc.“Katara is right y/n. It suits you! Sokka did a great job.” He spoke. He had that nice big smile. “ New hair cut? Looks nice” Zuko said patting your back. You’ve been dating him for 4 months and you’re very thrilled about it. He’s very kind and romantic when alone with you.
The day went on by. Everyone was calm. You can hear the ocean tides and feel the wind blowing. “Tell her. I’m tired of hiding.” Mai said. Zuko rubbed his temples. “It’s not that simple Mai. I can’t dump her out of the blue.” He responded. You heard them. “You don’t even like her. Why did you agree on dating her?” Your tears slipped. You didn’t want to hear his answer. “Because…she’s saved me many times..and I felt bad. It looked like she was going to cry if I said no.That and how many guys do chubby girls date? Almost never. I’m giving her a little hope.” You cried silently. You felt sudden saddens and hate. Running towards the ocean Katara called out to you. “ Y/n we’re making lunch! Wanna come help?” You ignored her walking back and forth. The waves following your movement. You made a fist. Your anger was so out of control you created a storm. “ Hey! Y/n you created a problem here!” Sokka yelled as Aang used his air bending to keep the water from drenching them. “Sorry!” You took a few deep breathes calming away the storm and the crazy waves.
“What’s got you so upset?” Katara asked giving you a tight hug. “ I keep losing my arrows. Haha. I overreacted.” She knew you were lying. She’s your most trusted person. Katara understands your personality, sense of humor, and the way you just are. She whispered. “We can talk about it later.” You smiled and nodded. Lunch was yummy. Everyone’s stomach was content.
Another 3 months went by. All the same apparently Zuko still loves you and wants to spend was much time with you as possible. It was such bullshit. You heard him leave with Mai at midnight. You saw how they treated each other. The little things showed everything.
The ride on the ship was wild. Not because there was a storm or someone was throwing arrows, fire rocks or trying to drown you all. Simply because an argument started.
“ you have no right to be upset. I’ve known him longer. You don’t get it.” Mai said with a straight face. You couldn’t believe what she said. The fire nation is insane however a regular family took you in. You eventually met Zuko. “ Have no right to be upset!? Are you kidding me? Yeah, he was your childhood sweetheart or whatever but who followed behind him when he was exiled !? Me! Which one of us cared to help him emotionally? Me! I’ve given him all my love and support even if it meant I’d be killed on the spot for betraying the fire nation. You did nothing but hide underneath Azula’s shadow and power. Yeah, I have every right to be upset.” You replied tears falling down your cheeks. Everyone was witnessing this mess. You were smarter, stronger, and more reasonable than her. “Zuko out of all the mistakes you’ve made. Cheating on me is the worst one. I know I’m beautiful even if I’m skinny or not. Not many chubby girls get boyfriends you sure were right about that. You should’ve rejected me from the start because I don’t need your pity.” You spoke finally feeling relieved. You said everything you’ve been wanting to say. “You heard us that day? Why didn’t you confront us then?” Zuko asked looking Towards Mai and then at you. “I had hope that along the way you’d realize what you did was wrong and you’d fall in love with me. 3 months later it’s the same. Clearly, I was wrong. I’m done. I’m dumping your ass. I hope you feel guilty for body shaming and lying.” You replied holding onto Katara’s arm. You couldn’t help but do so. She’s your best friend since you’ve met her. “ One day there will be an amazing man who will fall in love with you. He’ll love everything about you.” Katara said. You smiled and hugged her. “ Awe!” Aang and Sokka said in unison.
Pt.2 is posted !!!

This is what I think it would happen if Katara and Azula were telling people they’re dating:
.
.
.
—————————[Aang]—————————
Aang:
Azula: I think we broke him.
Aang:
Azula: I mean I killed him once but two times seems excessive.
Katara: I don’t think he needs that reminder right-
Aang: MONKEY FEATHERS WHAT WHY WHY HER OMG KATARA WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU SHE KILLED ME YOU WERE THERE AND-
Azula: I think I’m going to make some tea while he’s letting it out.
Katara: Bring some cookies.
Azula: Sure.
————————— [Sokka] —————————
Sokka [stepping closer to azula’s face]: Mmm.
Azula: What?
Sokka: What are your intentions with my sister?
Katara: Sokka please.
Sokka: Shh, I’m not asking you.
Azula: Sure.
Azula: She helps me to be a better person every day. She taught me how to love and how to love right even though I fuck it up on a regular basis. I want to be with her for as long as she wants me there. She’s strong, smart, caring and beautiful among other things. I just love her.
Katara [on the verge of tears]: ‘Zula
Sokka [crying]: That was…
Azula: Or maybe I’m a psycho and I want to destroy your tribe from the inside pretending I’m in love with the chief’s daughter.
Sokka: And there she goes.
Katara: She’s working on it.
————————— [Suki] —————————
Suki: She put me in prison.
Katara: I know.
Suki: She made our life a living hell.
Katara: She has changed.
Suki: People don’t change.
Katara: She was a traumatized, unstable and unloved child at that time. Believed me she changed.
Azula: Auch.
Katara: Sorry sweetheart.
Suki: …well I guess it’s your call after all.
Katara: Thank you.
Suki: Just one little thing… [looks at Azula] before you put me in that prison did you try to flirt with me?
Azula:
Katara: Azula?
Azula:
Suki: OMG how did you get Katara like that was so bad you had 0 skills
Katara: AZULA
————————— [Ty lee] —————————
Ty lee: Wait wait wait
Azula: For what?
Ty lee: Nonono wait wait wait
Azula: Are you having a stroke?
Katara: Maybe she is homophobic.
Azula: She’s a kyoshi warrior.
Ty lee: No but wait wait wait.
Azula: Agni
Katara:
Ty lee: YOU LIKE GIRLS THAT WAS AN OPTION AND YOU NEVER SAID SOMETHING FUCKING BASTARD YOU KNOW THE MASSIVE CRUSH I HAD ON YOU GROWING UP I TH-[and she kept screaming for a while]
Azula: We make the soft ones yell at us it must be some kind of achievement.
Katara: My turn to make the tea.
————————— [Toph] —————————
Toph: Congrats.
Katara: And that’s it?
Toph: What do you want me to say?
Katara: We don’t usually get a positive reaction at first.
Toph: I’m better than most people but I must say it’s kinda weird that you’re fucking a purple platypus bear.
Katara: What the hell are you talki-
Azula: And that’s why she’s the only one of your friends I respect.
Katara: You’re both so freaking weird.
Toph: Don’t be ableist.
Katara: I AM NOT-
————————— [Zuko] —————————
Zuko: Katara I get why Azula is messing with me but you teaming up with her? c’mon
Katara: It is not a prank.
Azula: Why wouldn’t she team up with me? I make great plans, I conquered Ba Sing Se and I had made legendary pranks.
Zuko: Katara it’s not funny.
Katara: Zuko we’re not joking.
Azula: Do you remember the time I made you think you were a big turtle duck?
Zuko: Katara please.
Katara: Zuko.
Azula: Oh oh or that other time when I pretended I couldn’t see you so I made you think you were invisible and you went into the kitchen naked to steal sweets.
Katara: Wait he did that?
Azula: What can I say? I’m good at pranks, babe.
Zuko: STOP ALL OF THAT.
————————— [Mai] —————————
Mai: You told Zuko?
Azula: Yes.
Mai: And he thought you were joking?
Katara: Yup.
Mai: Ty lee?
Azula: Also yes.
Mai: So between them who is the one who keeps screaming? My bet is on Ty, but Zuko can really get that high pitch.
Katara: Zuko is still in denial and saying that it’s a prank.
Azula: And Ty lee is the one who keeps screaming how much I love woman and why nobody tell her sooner.
Mai: She was unbearable about her crush on you until she join the kyoshi warriors. Now I think she’s dating one of them but I guess she needs to let it out the repressed years somehow.
Azula: I don’t blame her I know i’m gorgeous.
Katara: And very humble.
Azula: You didn’t deny it.
Mai: If you keep flirting here I want to say that I have a new knife I want to test.
—————— [Zuko (Second try)] ——————
Zuko: ‘Zula drop it already. Someone was screaming for a while and my head hurts.
Azula: Zuzu I’m not fucking joking.
Zuko: Yes, you are.
Azula: And they said I’m the stubborn one.
Katara: You know what fuck it.
[Katara takes azula by the collar of her shirt and kisses her hard]
Katara: DO YOU BELIEVE US NOW?!
Zuko: I know Azula would go far for a prank but I didn’t think you would roll with it. Still, I don’t believe you.
Katara: For Agni’s sake.
Azula [looking at Katara]: so… what are your thoughts of public sex to prove a point?
Katara: Azula remind me why I love you cause I’m about to kill you and your brother.

jo. bestie. hi. i’m holding your hands and asking u to please if u want deal us all permanent psychic damage with “you’re just as beautiful as the day i lost you” (the httyd divorced zukka agenda has to continue and nobody can do it as well as u <3)
Sokka had spent the entire journey to the Fire Nation imagining himself being so overwhelmed with emotion at the sight of Zuko that, decorum be damned, he would run into his arms as soon as they made eye contact.
The sting of disappointment he felt when he realized that Zuko wasn't even there to greet him and Katara was enough to extinguish most of the excitement he had felt and make him second-guess everything about this trip. It was odd enough that after over a decade of being broken up they had rekindled their relationship over letters, what would it be like when they saw each other in person for the first time in years? Did they only know how to be in love again in theory? Was Zuko truly ready to leave the throne and his home in a few months and start a life with Sokka?
He's hiding out on some balcony that the two of them frequented in his Ambassador days, and he jumps when he hears the door open behind him. It's probably Katara telling him to stop moping, and he's about to tell her that he just needs a minute when he sees Zuko there, giving him a tentative smile.
"Hey," he says.
"Hi," Sokka says, the corner of his mouth twitching in amusement.
"Sorry about," Zuko gestures, and Sokka knows what he means.
"I get it. You're a busy guy," Sokka says.
That makes Zuko frown, and he walks over and takes a seat on the bench next to him. "Not too busy for you," he says. Which, historically, is kind of a lie, but Sokka appreciates the sentiment all the same. Especially since soon, they won't have to worry about the Fire Lord nonsense ever again.
Zuko seems to be thinking the same thing. "For what it's worth, it wasn't 'official business' keeping me away again," he clarifies. "Izumi was getting a little overwhelmed with everything going on to get ready for the party, and I spent longer in the garden with her than I realized. She's with Uncle, now."
Sokka softens at that, his doubts slowly starting to fade away. "That's understandable."
"Thanks for coming all the way here," Zuko says quickly. "It means a lot and it...it's really good to see you."
The sincerity in his tone is a little overwhelming. "Wouldn't miss it for the world," Sokka says, despite having missed the last ten or so of Zuko's birthday celebrations.
It makes Zuko smile, though, which Sokka relaxes at the sight of.
"You look good," Sokka says, smiling back.
"You look..." Zuko trails off, a strange expression on his face as he just keeps staring at Sokka.
"What?" Sokka asks suspiciously. "Is there something on my face?"
"You're just as beautiful as the day I lost you," Zuko says, so softly Sokka might have missed it had he not been hanging onto every word from those lips.
"I..." Sokka says, feeling speechless for once as heat rises in his cheeks. "That's...great, thank you."
As soon as the words leave his mouth he groans, putting his head in his hands as Zuko laughs loudly at him.
"You can't just say things like that," Sokka complains, even if he can't stop smiling.
"I can and I will, especially if that is the kind of reaction I can expect," Zuko teases. Sokka looks over at him and feels his cheeks flushing again at the soft look on Zuko's face.
Sokka takes a shaky breath, calling upon every ounce of bravery he's ever possessed to help him reach for Zuko's hand. "Twelve years?" he asks, giving it a squeeze.
"Twelve years," Zuko confirms, squeezing back. “It’s not that I haven’t seen you that whole time. I just…never let myself really look.”
Sokka nods. “You’re sure this is what you want?”
Zuko raises his eyebrow. "I've started packing."
Sokka rolls his eyes and shoves Zuko's shoulder with his own. "Oh, so romantic, run away with me just because you're already packing."
Zuko laughs again, and Sokka feels lightheaded. He's not going to get used to constantly hearing that sound anytime soon.
“I've had all this time to think about it, and my answer is still the same," Zuko tells him seriously. "This is best for the Fire Nation, best for us. Are you sure, though? Six year olds are pretty crazy.”
“Raising a kid with you?" Sokka asks. "That's all I've ever wanted. Craziness and all."
The way Zuko looks at Sokka erases any of the doubts, the questions, the worries Sokka had about this. About them. After the years of heartbreak and separation, Sokka knows that's behind them, and the future looks much brighter.

okay, so I did just spend the entire day watching NATLA. I had no choice but to watch this all in one sitting with my friends because I knew that if I attempted to watch it alone, or in increments, I would simply never get past episode 1. and I was right. it, of course, sucked so bad. I intend to write an actual, articulate review of the show as a whole when I have time, but for now, here is a list of the notes I jotted down on my phone (including some quotes from my friends as we watched), cinema sins style (pluses indicate details I actually liked, however minuses are far more frequent; points I considered especially significant are bolded).
– NO COLON to signify the central tension of the entire show!!!
Episode 1:
+ Love Aang’s eyebrows, just a very cute kid in general
+ opening fight scene kind of serves
– Sozin does NOT
– This clunky exposition is so strange considering they clearly already assume we are familiar with the entire show
– What’s going on with Kyoshi (ie, where is Roku)
– Where is Katara narrating????
– Hideous fonts
+ AANG SO CUTE <3 (he’s giving Dewey!)
– He can just fucking fly without his glider I guess?
– Airbenders saying wow at airbending (ding!)
– Aang’s uggs
– Sky bison…… L (update: I lowkey came around on Appa, but only bc Momo was so fucking busted he looked incredible by contrast)
– Gyatso’s mustache L (update: many such cases going forward)
– What’s going on with the accents???
– Aang cannot fucking act for shit I’m so sorry to this adorable baby boy
– Depicting a literal genocide as an action scene. Fucking awful
– Aang actually trying to head back during the storm defeats the whole point of the whole inciting incident of his entire arc????
+ Waterbending Avatar State sequence in the storm actually looks cool
– I hate White Sokka
– I hate shein Katara
– They do NOT act like siblings
– I hate White Sokka
– Where is Katara I miss you baby girl
– ZUKO’S SCAR IS AWFUL
– Katara has no agency or passion or rage or emotion whatsoever?!!?!?
– Acting is SO BAD
+ Clunky exposition works for Zuko because he does have a propensity for monologuing all his intentions
– Sokka, however, does NOT
– How can Sokka be “the last man” of the Southern Water Tribe if there are like. Dozens of other guys only ever so slightly younger than him just standing around.
– Kanna just saying Katara’s monologue because Katara is a nothing
– WHY DO FIREBENDERS KEEP ATTACKING AT NIGHT
– Clunky ass exposition “he had to grow up fast” give me a fucking break
– Who the fuck is this white guy
– Katara has no motivations at all?? She’s just chopped liver I guess
– The cadence of every actor is so bad
– They can’t decide whether they want to be the cartoon or their own thing and instead they’re just nothing
Episode 2:
– KANNA JUST GIVES HER THE SCROLL?!?!? KATARA DOESNT GET TO SHOPLIFT. OR DO ANYTHING
– MILF ALERT!!!!
– I hate you straight nepobaby suki
– She’s so fucking weird
– White Sokka has a bad face and a good body. He should have a strikingly beautiful face and a scrawny, malnourished body. L
– Aang being afraid to airbend makes no sense
– Where is Sokka’s fucking Kyoshi Warrior feminization!!!!
– Sexist ass show
– STOP IT KYOSHI STOOOOPPPPP #NotMyKyoshi
Episode 3:
– This one rebel leader guy is giving Katara more than Katara
– Why are the colors so bland
– Sokka being scientifically minded makes no sense bc that trait (which, um, is actually quite crucial to his character) hasn’t actually been established at all up until this point (or retained beyond this one episode)
– This guy is giving jock who happens to be good at engineering, when Sokka should be a NERD who HAPPENS to be good at FIGHTING
– Azula and Mai are NOT GIVING
– Azula should present as sure of herself and incredibly poised. It’s actual crucial to reflecting how she has been shaped by abuse
– And Mai should be razor sharp (both physically and figuratively) and not give a fuck about any of this!!!
+ Katara hitting herself in the face was funny
– Redemption for beautiful Jet (my friend: “I love seeing a beautiful man die”)
– Freedom Fighters are GIVINGGG
– How can Kya “watch the sun rise every day” if they literally live in the South Pole
– They don’t understand Sokka’s daddy issues AT ALL. The simple fact that he’s actually communicating them is egregious
– The first time Katara actually gets angry is for Jet. But not even for the right reasons.
– The first exchange that Katara and Sokka have that makes any sense is in ep THREE (of 8)
– “Sokka was right. You are the bad guy.” WHO WROTE THIS 😭😭
– Jet is only going after the corrupt and collaborators…. So, um… he’s literally right???
+ The fight between Aang and Zuko is actually SO GOOD and understands their dynamic (sidenote: they’re the only kids who are actually giving their original characters at all)
+ Aang reading Zuko’s diary is so fucking funny
+ I love you Danny Pudi <3
Episode 4:
+ I love the interior of Bumi’s palace. Statues of Flopsy
– Omashu is in India now I guess and also everyone in the world lives here
– Bumi’s hat!?!?
+ The nomads sound like Fleet Foxes
– Katara and Sokka are literally switching roles in this tunnel
+ This one Earth Kingdom soldier is really serving.
– The fact that he’s ostensibly framed as in the wrong here though is INSANE
– Zuko is supposed to be ten here 😭 that’s a grown ass man with a BA in Econ
– Sokka’s necklace is plastic
– Katara and Sokka being like “we never used to fight at home” ……. WTF!?!?
– KATARA WOULD NEVER SAY THAT TO SOKKA SHE WOULD BEAT HIS ASS INTO THE GROUND EVEN IF HE WAS RIGHT
– Adults keep being so mean to Aang :((
+ Zuko’s hair is great
+ I like that Bumi gave Aang his bison whistle(?)
– Bumi’s anger is….interesting
Episode 5:
– Canonically 13 year old Zuko is also a grown ass man
– “How was I supposed to know she was a Fire Nation soldier” ummmmmm maybe due to your INSTINCTS and CONSTANT PARANOIA
– They keep alluding to escapades offscreen without actually depicting any of their grounded bonding moments so we have no reason to care about any of these characters whatsoever or their relationships with one another
– Sokka good with kids and names??? Preposterous
– Zuko kinda gay asf
– Zuko calling someone an idiot and Sokka never once does . Sounds fake
– Oppressed peoples are just a mouthpiece for oppression instead of real human beings
– Instragram ass makeup
– Aang isn’t having any fun
– Aang feels like he has no agency whatsoever because he only ever does what the adults around him tell him to do and never does anything of his own accord. Let him have a sillygoofy time!!!
– Constant clunky exposition and no understanding of its own narrative… it’s truly like if ATLA … was LOK.
+ JUUUUNE
– Hitting on Iroh for #feminism
– “I always thought I was spiritually attuned. I don’t know how he got in here though” is actually so Katara. Finally an actual Katara moment
– Wan Shi Tong goofy asf Guardians of Ga’Hoole ass CGI monstrosity
– What is with Sokka’s fucking white people references (all you need is love, bye bye birdie, etc). White devil I need him dead
– Sexy Kitsune for the furries
– Fox accuses him of making jokes to deflect “What? I don’t do that” WELL. HE DOESNT IN THIS VERSION!!! (Alluding to a character trait that they don’t actually depict is crazy. He literally says everything he’s feeling at all times in this and barely ever says anything witty. It’s like they’re TAUNTING us.)
– Kya sounds like she’s from the Upper East Side
– Why won’t they let Katara DO anything!!!
– Too economical with their storytelling leads to no real depth whatsoever
– Putting Katara’s flashback in Book 1 undermines the whole point of TSR
– I HATE YOU WHITE HAKODA
– If Sokka is so bad at ice dodging in this then why did they give him the mark of the wise ??????? None of this scene makes sense
– Why is Sokka CRYING (he doesn’t DO that)
– Koh looks so bad
– Aang doesn’t actually know how to fight Koh he’s just such a wooden actor that he happens to get away with it
– First Roku mention????? Lmfao
– Gyatso talking to Aang is so wack but at least he’s being nice to him
Episode 6 (aka the best episode by far):
+ Zuko just drawing an eye on the page is so real actually
– Azula’s flames aren’t even blue
– And she’s not mysterious or imposing at all!
– I HATE the makeup in the show
– The pacing is AWFUL and STUPID, no consideration as to WHY information is revealed when it is narratively/thematically
+ Okay he’s really giving Zuko lmfao
+ Ken Leung has made Zhao feel like a real person (but no one else is doing that ???)
– Low-budget fantasy C-dramas have costumes one million times better than this.
– What is with Iroh’s obsession with boats
– Quirked up old man Roku
– Zuko flashbacks don’t read as significant because his scar is nothing and he’s the same age
+ Aang and Zhao scene is great
+ I’d follow Zhao into battle
– Other friend: “This is the best episode so far and it’s because Katara and Sokka aren’t in it”
+ Blue Spirit mask actually looks like a theater mask
+ Using the original Blue Spirit theme!!
+ This episode actually slays
– Their commentary on narrativization is solely relegated to Zhao and no one else gets to participate in this thematic conversation, not even KATARA
+ I love the sassy gay scribe
+ LADDERS SCENEEEEE
+ Zuko canonically having good handwriting is so real
+ Aang and Zuko conversation is great
– Why does Aang keep assuming Zuko is compassionate and wounded when he hasn’t displayed any compassion, remorse, or pain
– Iroh stepping into the Agni Kai goes against his whole character
+ Ozai kind of rules tho
– WHY IS ZUKO ACTIVELY FIGHTING OZAI!!!!!!!!
– Zuko’s backstory makes no sense
+ Zuko’s thotty little collarbone
– Ozai’s scene here undermines the whole point of Zuko’s banishment
– Such bad dialogue it’s crazy
– How do the 41st division not know why they’ve been on this boat for the past 3 years when every piece of dialogue in this show is otherwise expository as fuck
– What’s the point of Gyatso leaving. They don’t explain it at all
Episode 7:
– The NWT is so grey and underwhelming. My favorite location in the whole show. Can’t have shit in Netflixworld.
– BECAUSE AANG JUST HAS VISIONS OF THE FUTURE NOW I GUESS
– PAKKU AND YUE LOOK SOOOOO BAD
– Yue looks like a Euphoria character in a party city wig
– This isn’t how Azula fights!!!
– I hate what they’re doing with Azula so bad
– Mai sucks too
– Their journey doesn’t feel earned at all because they didn’t hang out or learn anything or do shit
– Why is Yue in the kitchens if she’s a princess
– And why is she WATERBENDING
– Why isn’t she repressed!!!!! She shouldn’t BE “ordinary”
– Why is Sokka explaining his duties!!!! He doesn’t SAY SHIT!
– Why isn’t the guy playing Hahn playing Sokka and vice versa (I’m so fucking serious)
– YUE’S A FOX????? WHAT
– All the offscreen battles where we’re supposed to assume character development actually happened. Sure.
– Hahn being nice and respectful to Sokka makes no sense
– MILF Yugoda! (How would she know Kanna. Update: I guess that doesn’t even matter here )
– THEY DONT UNDERSTAND YUE OR HAHN OR WHAT PATRIARCHY IS. AT ALL
– Kuruk is too serious and Roku is too playful. It should be the reverse. Playing into racist tropes :/
– His eyes are way too blue I’m sorry to this man
– They all look like they know what iPhones are.
– Yue is so annoying . L
– This whole Yue Sokka scene is the most annoying thing I’ve ever fucking seen in my life. And entirely antithetical to their whole deal
– “My friends” this “my friends” that, except they never actually hang out. They just keep calling each other friends but they never actually show it in a believable way.
– They want to be edgy but they actually never fucking shut up about the power of friendship like we are all five years old. I think when they said they were “appealing to a Game of Thrones audience” what they really meant was just that they are also bad, incredibly misogynistic writers who depict sensitive topics without any care or nuance.
– I actually like the Fire Nation boats
– Zhao is working with Azula??? She wouldn’t KILL THE MOON
– Azula would never ask Ozai to do things she would wait for his command at all times!!!
– Since when is Sokka wise and emotionally mature enough to hold this conversation with Katara, and why isn’t Katara being impulsive. This fight is so planned out; all the excitement is lost.
– Her completely blank expression as Pakku humiliates her. I hate you SHEIN KATARA!!!!!!
– This fight is so dull and lame whereas in the original that fight scene literally changed my life as a kid????? #NotMyKatara
– “The Legend of Aang” EW
– Why isn’t Aang waterbending at all. Book 1: “talking about water in completely abstract, hypothetical terms”
Episode 8:
– Iroh telling Zuko how to break into the North Pole is undermining the one moment where he actually demonstrates his intelligence as an independent person
– Stupid ass liberal feminism I hate you
– So they are sexist but also not. Makes sense
– What the fuck is with this moon backstory shit. Who needed that
– Zhao going to the Fire Temple instead of Wan Shi Tong’s Library for info on the moon completely undermines the point about the role of knowledge in imperialist conquest
– Kuruk looks like a Star Wars force ghost
+ THEY KILLED MOMO (kind of made me laugh a lot, so… points for that I guess)
– But they could only feature him for all of five seconds bc they don’t have the budget to constantly animate his mangy rat ass
– Why is Yue helping MOMO instead of ACTUAL HUMAN BEINGS
– They want me to believe that White Sokka has compassion for that little rat when I simply do not believe that this man cares for anyone or anything or even has a soul.
+ Zuko and Aang’s situationship/chemistry is crazy. They’re both kind of slaying actually
– That said, the kid who plays Aang is not a very good actor, he’s just adorable and has big ears and a Dewey voice. And the kid who plays Zuko has the easiest acting job in the show because Zuko is actually so over the top and dramatic that overacting feels authentic to this one character in particular (and no one else).
– Bending fights look stupid and feel thematically insignificant
– This red filter looks so bad
– Why do they keep dragging out fast paced scenes to explain everything so that they’re now boring af
– Hahn is just……. Okay go off woke feminist king. Sure. Why not
– All the exposition is so clunky and slow and undermining the actual point of the scene
– Not only is this not visually interesting, it also doesn’t translate tonally, and the primary actors can’t pull it off
– So NOW Iroh kills Zhao. Okay
– Zhao wouldn’t respect a teenage girl this much, even if she is the princess
– Koizilla looks bad :(
– RIP Ken Leung the Cunt Slayer. 5ever in our hearts </3
+ It’s actually so funny that Ken Leung apparently didn’t even know what he was auditioning for because he was by far the best actor in this show and nearly singlehandedly redeemed it. I love this guy so much.
– Me: “This isn’t a show. This is a farcical simulacrum of real art.” Friend, far more concisely: “This is a fucking joke.”
– Katara and Sokka barely even seem like they care about each other. Look at how they massacred by boy (and girl)
– Yue and Sokka alluding to fucking offscreen WOULD be a slay if they weren’t both annoying as fuck…
– Oh so NOW Katara talks Aang down from the Avatar State. Yeah. I buy that.
– “You’re not just the Avatar you’re my family” really? Because you’ve barely even talked
– The sequencing and pacing of the Siege of the Noth was nonsensical.
– “My daughter always made her own choices” NO SHE FUCKING DIDNT!!!!! THE WHOLE POINT OF HER CHARACTER. WAS THAT SHE COULDN’T!!! Shallow fucking libfem bullshit they MASSACRED my girl!!!!!!
– Why is Arnook comforting Sokka when Sokka should be comforting HIM
– Also Sokka would never express his insecurities to Arnook in the first place. NOT MY REPRESSED KING????
– Why is Sokka giving emotional support and Katara giving tactical support -_-
– They really think that “Gotta let go of the past to have a future” is such a fucking smart line they used it twice
– Conquering Omashu wasn’t a STRATEGY it just happened CONCURRENTLY because their imperialist regime is incredibly powerful … This show doesn’t understand its own politics at all.
– Azula has no poise or swag smh
– Aang doesn’t even know about Sozin’s comet because Roku didn’t tell him…
– It’s crazy that a show written in the 2020s is actually SO MUCH more sexist than a show written in the 2000s.
– TDLR; I hate you capitalism, I hate you Netflix, I hate you White Sokka, I hate you SHEIN Katara, I hate you heterosexual nepobaby Suki, I hate you girlboss Yue, I hate you visibly insecure Azula, I hate you whatever is going on with Mai, I hate you CGI Momo, I hate you wack ass pacing, I hate you clunky, idiotic dialogue, I hate you complete and utter lack of consideration into what made this show great in the first place, I love you Danny Pudi, I love you Ken Leung.
Which, in fairness, is all pretty much exactly what I expected this show would be. But at least actually watching it did indeed verify all my assumptions (although what they did to Katara specifically was even worse than what I had assumed, dear god), so I will be writing up a more in-depth review soon so that I can actually try to unpack why this show is such a dumpster fire, and how that reflects larger trends in media. But for now, all I can say is, I can’t believe I sat through 8 hours of this fucking garbage knowing it would be bad and it was. I’ve been saying this show would suck ass since the second it was announced, and yet it somehow managed to still prove worse than even my incredibly pessimistic expectations. A soulless, shallow, offensive work of profit that cannot even attempt to justify its own existence. I need to kill White Sokka with hammers.

Hey Lena!
Zutara Drabble # 5 & 8, please. ^.^
“Wait a minute. Are you jealous?” & “Wanna bet?”
Katara knocked once, briefly, on the Fire Lord’s office door before pushing it open and inviting herself in. She and Zuko had worked together for so long—had been friends for so long—that they no longer had the need, or the patience, for a semblance of formality.
Katara supposed that on some unlucky day in the future she might walk in on him practicing his Iroh impression, or worse (better?), with his pants down. But per usual, the Fire Lord was merely at his desk, head in hand, as his glazed-over eyes scanned some boring parchment.
“Hey Zuko,” chirped Katara, feeling herself almost expand upon seeing him, upon seeing the transformation of his face when his eyes fell on her—the subtle widening of his right eye, the easy smile that pulled at the corners of his mouth.
“Hey,” he said in response, setting his parchment aside and giving her his full attention. A piece of hair had fallen out of his top knot. “My favorite ambassador—"
“Mhm, whatever,” she joked back. “Funny how I become the favorite every time the fishing waters treaty is up for renewal—"
“You’re always my favorite, I just happen to point it out at specific times.”
Katara rolled her eyes, even though she felt her cheeks warm a little at Zuko’s words.
“Anyway,” she said, shrugging off that impossibility, “I’m just delivering the report on the healers in Fire Fountain City.” She handed him another piece of parchment, which Zuko took with some hesitation.
“The report on the healers—?” he muttered, eyes scanning the page. “But I didn’t need this for a couple more days—”
“Yes, well, Tanriq invited me to the Fire Lantern Festival tomorrow evening, so I got it done early.”
She watched as Zuko’s eyes stopped scanning the parchment, but he didn’t look up.
“Tanriq?” For some reason, his voice had gone up in pitch.
“Do you know another Tanriq?” Katara asked, curious at Zuko’s confusion.
“The—the ambassador from the Northern Water Tribe?”
“Of course,” said Katara slowly.
“You’re—together?”
“No,” she said immediately, and then chided herself. “I mean—I’m giving him a chance. So…maybe in the future? We’ll see how it goes—”
“It’s not going to go well,” Zuko interrupted her.
Katara blinked at him. “Huh?”
“I mean,” Zuko said, bringing his hands in front of him on the desk and rolling them together. “I just mean—it’s just a little odd, the two of you—the Fire Lantern Festival—"
“What’s so odd about it?” Katara asked, half surprised and half curious about the issue Zuko saw that she couldn’t. “I like festivals.”
“Right, but do you like them with Tanriq? I—I dunno you will.”
“Sure, he’s a little boring—”
“He doesn’t know you at all!” Zuko interjected, and then quieted, shifting his eyes. But he continued. “I mean, will he know to take you to the food stalls that sell ocean kumquats? Will he take you dancing early enough so you don’t miss the tsungi horn players?”
Katara laughed. “I can tell him not to!” she pointed out. “You don’t need to be worried for me, I’m sure we’ll have a fine time—”
“Wanna bet?”
Katara stared at him. “Do I want to…make a bet about whether I’ll enjoy myself on a date?”
“Um,” said Zuko, shifting in his seat so that the chair squeaked. The panic on his face did not match the regality of his formal robes. “No, that was uncalled for, sorry,” he said. “I—I—”
And as Zuko stuttered, and Katara stared at Zuko’s rapidly reddening cheeks, she came to an unlikely—but perhaps possible?—conclusion.
“Wait a minute. Are you jealous?”
She hadn’t meant to say it out loud. She had to fight the urge to clap a hand to her mouth in horror. And if Zuko had looked skeptical whatsoever, she would have curled in on herself and scurried out the door like a goat dog with its tail between its legs. And then possibly quit her job and moved to the Foggy Swamp.
But Zuko didn’t look skeptical. Zuko did not calmly and coolly reject her suggestion. Instead, he noisily backed up his chair, stood, buried his hands in his hair, and yelped, “Me?! Jealous?! No—no, definitely not!” And then he laughed like an unhinged hyena leopard.
“I—” Katara started, over what sounded like the beginnings of a panic attack. “I—um,” she said, reminding herself that she was a waterbending master and teacher to the Avatar and she was not scared of anything—“I won’t go with him. If you—um—if you don’t want me to,” she said, knowing that her tone had drastically changed from teasing to serious.
Zuko’s laughter died down and he matched her serious expression. “Katara, no—I would never try to insert myself in your personal life—I’m sorry, I just got, um—” he paused, but didn’t finish his sentence.
“Can I take your bet then?”
“What?”
“But for the other side. I bet you I won’t have a nice time with Tanriq.”
“I—look—I was being childish—of course you’ll have a nice time—”
“Maybe,” she said, and Zuko’s face fell for the briefest moment before he schooled it to one of impassive regard once more. “But I think I’ll have a nicer time with someone who knows me better, like you said.”
Zuko looked away from her and stretched his arm behind him to rub the back of his neck. “I think you should go with whoever you want to go with,” he muttered.
Katara wanted to scream. But…she did want this more than she wanted to scream. “You,” she said, only a smidge of frustration in her voice. “I’d rather go with you.”
Zuko’s eyes snapped to hers. “Oh? Is that—is that—is that right?”
“If, um, if you want to,” she murmured, suddenly feeling her mortification rise. What if she’d gauged this wrong? She did get along with Hu in the Foggy Swamp. She could totally start a new life there.
“Yes,” Zuko said immediately. “I mean—yes. I do want.” His eyes were boring into hers.
“Um, great,” she said, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear. “So…I’ll tell Tanriq nevermind…and you’ll just need to tell your guards—”
“No,” Zuko said, leaning forward now, and Katara felt her blood thrill. “Many of the festival goers will wear masks. We can too.
“Really? But I don’t have a mask—"
“Don’t worry, I have an idea for us.”

Discoveries (That I Panic About)
Hakoda stood at the front of the ship, gripping the railings to see if he could see the Fire Nation and where his children were.
He had been very busy, slowly but surely rebuilding the Southern Water Tribe with Malina. But now he had time to visit.
As he traveled to the Fire Nation, where his children were, he wondered what the announcement they had mentioned in their letters was.
Katara had only spoke of it briefly, talking more about the young Avatar Aang, but she did say that it might surprise him, and it would be good for Water Tribe and Fire Nation relations.
Sokka was more enthusiastic, stating what Katara had said, but also that he was so pleased with the proposal that he agreed immediately. Aang, the Avatar, was apparently also excited for the announcement. Even Toph Beifong, who was all the way in the Earth Kingdom and busy with her metal bending school, had traveled to the Fire Nation.
So really, this declaration would be phenomenal, and would cause an entire chapter to be made in the history books.
But there was one specific letter out of the eyebrow-raising three that had surprised him immensely.
It was from Firelord Zuko.
Zuko, the poor boy, had sounded very anxious and desperate to please in his letter. He promised that he wasn’t forcing anyone do anything, and that he and Sokka had both agreed this would be the best route, and that he was very hopeful that Hakoda would be accepting of their decision.
And while Hakoda had to admit that he was a bit skeptical of how good this choice was, considering they were just children ruling over an entire nation, he did trust Zuko enough to not have any doubts that all parties had consented to this choice.
Suddenly there was yelling, shaking him out of his thoughts and alerting Hakoda that they were close to the Fire Nation now.
When they finally arrived, the entire Water Tribe was in for a slight shock as a massive furry bison flew in and roared. Of course they had seen the animal before, but perhaps not this close. Avatar Aang immediately leapt off his beast, apologizing profusely to the surprised warriors.
“I didn’t mean to scare you!’ He blabbered. “It’s just Appa trying to greet you! I’m so, so, so sorry! It won’t happen again!”
Hakoda gave him an amused smile, placing his hand on the young boy’s shoulder. “It’s quite alright, Aang.”
“Dad!”
Hakoda just had barely enough time to see a blurr of blue and brown before he was engulfed in a massive hug, almost knocking him off balance. He grinned warmly. “Katara! Oh, look at you! You’ve certainly grown.”
She beamed. “Oh, Dad, the preparations are amazing! You have to see it.”
“That sounds wonderful, Katara,” Hakoda said, “But I was wondering where your brother was?”
Katara smiled, albeit a bit mischeiviously. “Oh, he’s in the palace. He’s busy with preparations and stressing over every detail on this very, very special day.”
Hakoda frowned a bit. “Are you sure he’s okay? I don’t want him overworking himself.”
Katara shakes her head. “Don’t worry, Dad. With Zuko there, Sokka won’t even overwork an hour.”
Hakoda nodded, a bit hesitantly. “Well, if you say so.”
And then Katara and Aang started dragging him along, insisting that they can’t be late. Hakoda shot a confused and pleading glance towards Bato, who just shook his head and smiled.
Traitor.
*
“Katara! Oh, hey, Twinkle Toes,” Toph said. “And Hakoda.” She added, a bit like an afterthought.
Katara smiled at the younger girl. “Hey, Toph!” She replied, Aang following suit. “Do you know where Sokka is?”
Toph snorted. “He’s with Zuko, as per usual.” She responded, sounding incredibly exasperated. Hakoda assumed that his son and the Firelord were good friends.
Katara nodded. “That’s good. Come on, Dad!”
The dragging started up once more, with Toph following, but thankfully this time it was much shorter. They stopped in front of two massive bronze doors, accented with shining gold. It looked like a door for royalty, and it also looked very similar to the entrance of the Fire Lady’s room described in Sokka’s letters. Hakoda couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow. “Why is Sokka in the Firelord’s room?”
Katara and Aang exchanged glances. They both smiled knowingly, as if Hakoda had said something a bit stupid and was being oblivious. He was mildly insulted by that.
“Oh, that’s not Zuko’s room! It’s Sokka’s.” Aang said casually, as if the knowledge that his son was living in a room made for royalty was inconsequential.
Katara pushed the doors open, revealing Sokka sitting at a desk, with Zuko beside him, incredibly close and having an arm around his son’s shoulders.
“Oi, Snoozles!” Toph yelled, and the two boys jumped apart. Sokka and Zuko both twisted their heads to face all four of them, their eyes blown ridiculously wide.
When Sokka saw Hakoda, his eyes grew even wider, something that had seemed impossible to Hakoda. “Dad!” Sokka exclaimed, and ran over. Sokka tackled him in a hug, which Hakoda was quick to reciprocate.
Hakoda laughed a little. “Look at you, Sokka!” He said. “You’ve grown into a fine young warrior.”
Sokka beamed with pride at the praise. Zuko looked on at them and smiled.
And this was when Hakoda discovered something very important.
He looked down.
And he saw…
A blue choker.
On his son’s neck.
Shocked, Hakoda shoved him away, confused.
Sokka looked hurt, while the others stared at him, mildly flabbergasted.
“You– you have,” Hakoda stutters through his words, “Since when? Who?”
Sokka looks confused at first, and Hakoda wants to shake him, begging for answers like a hungry, desperate man demanding apples from a tree. Thank Tui and La, Sokka understands. His face flushes right down to the roots of his hair and he glances at his sister desperately. “You didn’t tell him?!”
She shrugged, much to innocently. “It’s you who has the necklace. You tell him.”
“But– but… Ugh!” Sokka groaned.
“Sokka,” Hakoda said, very, very slowly. “When did this happen? And with who?”
Sokka paled, and swallowed. Then swallowed again. He looked like he needed a drink. And, admittedly, Hakoda did too.
“I– I,” He stammered. “It just happened, like, last week! It’s very, very recent news, Dad, I promise!”
“And who…” Hakoda started gesticulating wildly, “Was it that nice girl from Kyoshi? Suki?”
Sokka choked. “Dad, Dad, no! Spirits, no, we broke up! We’re just friends!”
“But then…” Hakoda’s gaze shifted towards the Firelord. There was a high blush on his cheeks. Hakoda looks back at Sokka’s necklace. There’s a Fire Nation symbol inscribed on the purple stone hanging from the blue collar. “You– you– Zuko??”
Sokka grimaced and nodded. “Dad,” He said, gesturing to Zuko, “Meet your future son-in-law.”
And Hakoda faints.
*
When Hakoda came back to himself, he finds he is in the palace’s infirmary.
He also finds his children and their group looking over him anxiously.
Instantly, Hakoda finds himself wrapped in another hug.
“Kids?” He said lowly.
“Glad you’re awake, Dad.” Katara said, smiling.
Zuko stepped forward, a little awkwardly because his Firelord garb was so heavy on him. He bowed. “Um, hello, Hakoda, sir,” He said. “I– I know I didn’t exactly make a, uh, good first impression as your future son-in-law–”
Hakoda stopped him when he took his hand. Maybe he should be against this. Maybe he should shout at Sokka, tell him to break it off, because this was the Firelord, and the Firelord was the leader of a nation that took so much from him.
But he couldn’t.
He couldn’t because a leader is not responsible for his nation’s past mistakes, they are responsible to fix them.
He couldn’t, because when he looked at the Firelord, all he could see was a young, terrified boy named Zuko. A young boy who grew up to fast, and was forced to save the world, a heavy burden on his shoulders.
“It’s quite alright,” He said honestly, “I was… ah, very… shocked?”
Toph snorted. “Seems like an understatement.” Hakoda ignored her.
“But, I must assure you,” He continued, “I approve of this. You were right, Katara, in the fact that this might strengthen Water Tribe and Fire Nation relations, but I can also see how close you and Zuko are, Sokka.”
Sokka looked like he was going to cry, and he hugged Hakoda even tighter than before. “Thank you, Dad,” He whispered. “Thank you.”
And so, is really any surprise that Hakoda cries during the announcement?
He is just so, so proud.
*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&
zuko: sokka, sokka, did u notice the color of the necklace???
sokka: ofc why?
zuko: its purple bc us yk?? fire nation and water tribe??
sokka: oh my god you're so cheesy ily

The creation of heartbenders comes from my brain, please, no plagiarism or ask before copying (put my name, I would love to read your fics talking about Avatar <3)
English is unfortunately not my mother tongue, sorry if mistakes are present in this fic!
Tumblr media
Aang was the last airbender. He disappeared after learning that he was the next avatar. Completely reclusive from his old world. He did not know how to save the world. He could not have the courage to save the world from the destruction of the fire nation. But he remembered that he knew a family that could help him learn the power of the land. The Y/N family of the Earth nation.
-----------------------------
The group had just arrived in a temple of the nation of the Earth. It was rare for the people of this nation to accept strangers especially people who came from the fire nation. Zuko was uncomfortable but his uncle was even more so. He had been sent to this temple to destroy it in the early days of the war and the men of the fire nation had decided to remain in the vicinity of this temple. Iroh, Zuko’s uncle, had been sent to the land nation to capture and kill the heartbenders. For many, heartbenders were abominations of life and when he was younger, Iroh thought so too. But after the loss of his son, the rumors of the heartbender abomination had become untrue to him. He had seen the warmth and the angelism of the power of life, but the horrors committed by the nation of fire, could not be repaired. Indeed, the men of the earth nation from this temple had a secret: it had a different type of earth power. He had the power of life. He had the power to revive plants but also humans. Heartbenders had become increasingly scarce. Because of the war. But also the devastation done in this temple. The Y/N family, the most important family in this temple since this family had decided to protect the back of the different avatars that had been there for generations and generations. Aang knew a man named Yuan Y/N, the great-grandfather of the Y/N family. He had known the young avatar during his early years and Aang had decided to visit him so that heHere comes to help him master the power of the earth but with other than the basic ability, he wanted to learn the power of life and control the dead.
-----------------------------
Aang began to speak so that his friends would know what to know about this people. He was not like other people on earth. He remained reclusive to avoid war but also heartbender trafficking.
“Yuan was a child of the people of Kyoshi Temple. These people did not like strangers because the Y/N family was the last family of heartbenders.” He heard slight exclamations after saying this sentence, Aang smiled. Yes, the Y/N family was really great and he loved to have as a friend this frail boy yet so generous. “Heartbenders are increasingly lonely and Yuan was one. He could grow plants but also revive them. His power was one of the most beautiful, no one can make me say otherwise. I don’t even know how or why people are chasing them when their powers could bring peace to the land and allow us to get along with everyone on the land— But the heartbender hunt was declared shortly after I was promoted to my role as an air nation monk and I was no longer allowed to approach Yuan. We lost contact shortly after he had his twelfth birthday…I would like to know how he is now…”
“Aang, this man must be over 112 years now… And even more so if he was a heartbenders… These men and women were considered traitors among all the nations…. I’m sorry, Aang, but your friend has unfortunately passed away.” Katara looked at the young avatar and she saw the tears coming in her friend’s eyes.
“Hey… Whether he’s still alive or not, maybe he has grandchildren? Maybe he has a family that can help you?” Sokka looked at his friend trying to comfort him. "And even though he has no family, he is still here." The boy of the water nation pointed to the heart of the young avatar and he saw a slight smile appeared on the face of the air boy.
“Thank you Sokka, thank you so much for comforting me!” Aang sighed before turning his gaze to a mountain where a statue of Kyoshi could be seen from afar. "Here we are, friends!"
-----------------------------
The village was right in front of them. They had walked for long hours to reach this village hidden by a dense forest. The men and women of the nation of the earth knew how to hide in their element.
While Sokka was at the front of the group, a weapon dangerously approached his neck. He could not believe his eyes. He had not seen the weapon appear and fell to the ground. Katara approached his brother but he was forbidden to approach. Aang moved to avoid being seen, perhaps this village was with the fire nation.
Suddenly, a masked figure appeared in front of them. "What are you doing here? How did you find my village?" The man who spoke was slightly larger than Sokka and was much more muscular than him, he dominated them all.
Aang approached the man and began to speak. "My name is Aang. I am an airbender and I am also the avatar everyone was waiting for.” He was cut by an exclamation of the man who seemed septic. But who wouldn’t, the airbenders were all gone a hundred years ago now. “I came to see an old friend and his name is Yuan. That’s why I know the location of your village so precisely. We are not with the fire nation and we will never be.
“Well…” A voice was heard behind the masked man. “I didn’t expect to see the young boy who accompanied my father as a child again.” A woman stood and looked at the young avatar. His eyes looked like Yuan’s. Warm and full of joy. As if the war had not touched him.
“Mother…You had to stay in the village…” The masked boy took off his mask, revealing his face to the other people around him. He had a very beautiful face and his C/E eyes allowed to see all the horrors he had already seen.
“I know, my son! But…” The woman looked at her son and winked at him. The young man broke down on the spot.
"And do you know where she left?" The young man began to run towards the forest and disappeared quickly, so dense was the forest.
“I feel sorry for my son. He never liked it when people approached our village. War leaves irreparable scars for the men and women living on this land.” Aang’s group was completely charmed by the woman. "Oh, I didn’t introduce myself. My name is Y/M/N Y/N and the man you are looking for is my grandfather…and unfortunately he passed away over 50 years ago… He died for protecting our village…May his soul be at peace…” Aang felt his throat cut. He expected it a little, many of his friends had died but he felt more and more alone as time passed.
Katara, seeing that no one was answering the woman, decided to answer her. “Good morning, Madam… We wanted to find a heartbender-" The look on the woman’s face changed to show fear.
“Please…Don’t say this power too loud… The men of the fire nation may have followed you and if they know we are hiding heartbenders, they may kill us for treason…” Aang looked at the woman’s eyes and turned to where her boy had gone.
“One of your children is a heartbender?” Iroh watched the woman decompose. “We don’t want to harm your children… The young man needs someone to train him in this secret power of which your people are the last to know the characteristics of this power and thus form Aang.”
“My daughter is not here yet and the heartbenders were killed in one of the fire nation attacks…” The woman looked back at the group. “But we can wait for her, she will return as always. Let the feast begin for the return of the Avatar, our savior and our hope.”
-----------------------------
Zuko had decided not to participate in the party that had been organized for the arrival of the avatar. He did not feel comfortable with others and he did not want to participate in a feast with a people who had suffered death because of his nation. He saw people tired of this war, crying when one of the statues representing the soldiers of the nation of the earth became black which announced the death of the soldiers. His uncle had tried not to show himself too much. He felt pity for those men and women who lost family members because of his brother’s madness. The madness of his brother who had caused the death of thousands of people.
Zuko walked for long minutes when he heard two voices talking behind a tree. He recognized the boy who had faced Sokka, thinking he was a killer-archer. He was protecting the girl with Y/C/H hair who was with him and who never seemed to leave him.
The boy had just asked the girl beside him. Zuko hid behind a tree so that he could continue to listen to the conversation of the two young people of the nation of the earth.
“Well, one is the avatar, so it’s okay for mother to want him to stay here and learn a little bit more about the power of heartbenders…” The girl had just spoken and Zuko looked at the girl’s hand, whose flower magically appeared. He looked at the girl with incomprehension. The heartbenders had disappeared during the temple’s first attack, so how is it possible that a girl could have a power gone?
“Stop Y/N! I beg you to stop using this silly power. If someone finds out, they’ll throw you into a war you don’t need to be in. You don’t have to.” The boy had just pulled the flower out of the hands of the presumed Y/N. Zuko could not let go of his gaze of the girl.
“But N/A…My power is to protect people…I want to save…” Y/N started a sentence but stopped seeing his brother’s disappointed look. He never looked at her like that, and she knew that he only wanted her well. He wanted her to stay alive, he wanted to be crazy. He was selfish and N/B knew it. He prayed every day that the war would spare his younger sister. He wanted her never to have that stupid power. That cursed power.
The power of heartbenders was a power that many nations wanted to have. It allowed to control the life of the forests but also the life of the men who surrounded the heartbenders. Heartbenders could kill people who were around them but they could also heal serious wounds and revive people. This power was known to few but the leaders of the different nations knew that this power existed and that if they captured heartbenders, the war would end.
“Listen Y/N, I don’t want to lose you…” Suddenly, Zuko heard a cracked branch on his left side. He turned his head to the side but saw only flowers appear. He turned his face Y/N and Y/B but found no one. They had disappeared and Zuko did not know where he could have gone. As he decided to turn back, he felt a blade slipping on his neck. He turned his body to see his attacker and fell face to face with Y/B. The boy’s C/E eyes pierced his skull as the blade pressed harder and harder on his neck.
"Who are you and what are you doing here?" The boy of the earth retreated slightly when he saw light flames appear at the fingertips of the boy whom he kept under his blade. “You’re a spy of the fire nation…What are you doing here? Your people have already done enough harm to the temple of Kyoshi, my people have suffered because of yours…” The young man’s blade clung even stronger to his neck.
“I’m not with the fire nation… I ran away from my life to help the Avatar Aang, I’m with him, you can ask him if you don’t believe me.” Zuko looked at the boy and he found a resemblance to the girl who was with him, before they disappeared.
"Are you with Avatar Aang? I don’t believe you." Y/B looked away for a few seconds to cross the eyes of his sister, Y/N. But these few seconds of exchange allowed Zuko to defend himself and sent him slamming on one of the trees behind the two men. The tree sucked the young man from the ground as if to protect him from the impact and thus afford to have a plan to protect his sister. The main person protected was his younger sister and he could not afford to lose her. He could not lose another family member and most importantly, Y/N had to stay alive to rebuild the forests destroyed by the fire nation. Heartbenders were born to accomplish this mission and until it was not fulfilled, heartbenders could not rest in peace. They were reborn endlessly, until life was calm and peaceful again for the people remaining alive.
"Why don’t you believe me? I wouldn’t lie about something so serious." Zuko couldn’t understand, he didn’t know how to do it. And if no one believed him when he said he was no longer part of the fire nation. "I hate the fire nation as much as you do. I hate her from the bottom of my soul. I betrayed my homeland to help Avatar Aang as your family betrayed the nation of earth to help Avatar Kyoshi… Your family is no longer part of the nation of the earth, that’s why no one stays with you and people want to capture you more and more. They want to take your sister, Y/N, right?”
“DON’T TALK ABOUT MY SISTER! YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO TAKE HER NAME OUT OF YOUR MOUTH!” Zuko had just hit a nerve. He had touched the rope that held the power of Y/B’s earth in perfect constant. The powers of the earth were connected with the feelings of the person and sometimes, when the people of the nation of the earth lost control of their powers, accidents could happen because no one could make them go back in the right way. When an earthbender lost control, it was difficult to regain control of his men. The land began to crack under Zuko’s feet and the fire nation boy began to panic, he did not want this to happen. He was not to upset a member of another nation, especially the land. Their emotional instability was far too strong for anyone to beat.
“I’m sorry…Stop…” Zuko begged the young man because he seemed really about to kill him. Suddenly, C/H hair appeared before his eyes and he let go a slight smile.
“Y/B. Stop, you don’t have to fight in front of the Kyoshi statue. She’s going to get angry.” The girl approached her brother and touched his cheek. She turned to Zuko to see if he was okay. "Are you all right, son of the fire nation?"
“My name is Zuko and I prefer you to call me that…” Zuko lowered his head but fingers touched his chin to raise his head.
“Raise your head. The men of the fire nation are not all the same. Many men have deserted the ranks of this nation. You don’t have to lower your head, you’re a strong person.” Suddenly, a bell rang in the forest and Y/B reached out immediately.
«THE VILLAGE IS UNDER ATTACK!» Y/N had just screamed and Y/B looked at her sister, making her understand that she had to go somewhere else. "To my Gods, the temple is defenseless."
The girl began to run as the trees closed in her path so that no one could pass into her lair and kill the young heartbender.
"Follow my sister! Protect her at the risk of your life! I beg you, she is the hope of my village. When the war is over, it can help our nations rebuild nature, but if it dies before, the omens made by the gods will be more and more present… And it is not war that will kill us, but nature around us…” Y/B rushed in the opposite direction of his sister and he disappeared, absorbed by the earth, so he was an earthbender.
-----------------------------
Kyoshi’s temple was one of the most beautiful that Zuko had seen. The wood and the mother-of-pearl color complemented the other colors that were present on the temple. The sunset reflected, giving yellow and golden colors on all the towers.
He arrived in front of the wooden door, with different flowers on top and it was slightly open. He chuckled slightly, realizing that the girl was extremely naive, thinking that no one would know that no one would be there. He thought back to the fire nation, to his family that he expected to wait impatiently while the reality was quite different.
Zuko whispered this sentence calmly, but this simple action reverberated against the walls of the temple. The phrase he thought harmless was ultimately something extremely catastrophic but whatever this simple resource could allow Zuko and Y/N to possibly postpone the war in the temple.
"Oh my gods!" Zuko turned and heard an insult behind his back. "Zuko, didn’t you?" The young man nodded and the girl gave him a slight, proud smile. “You have to watch the temple door while I collect the urns from the men and women of my village. To survive, I have to plant them in the forest but I never had time to do it because of the men of the fire nation who were spying on my family… I’m sorry you’re the one who has to put up with me, usually it’s -". She was cut by hot lips on hers, preventing her from continuing her rambling. She felt Zuko’s lips twist to form a smile and her breath became more erratic.
But there was no time for kisses in this war. Zuko promised to kiss him even harder when this battle was over.
-----------------------------
Zuko was fighting the men of the fire nation. He was trying to prevent them from entering Kyoshi Temple. If they came back, he wouldn’t forgive himself. The young heartbender had asked her not to bring anyone into the temple until she had removed the ballot boxes of the various men and women who had died during the first attack on the village. But the men of the fire were more and more numerous and Zuko could no longer fight, the wounds and burns became more and more painful and he could no longer bear it.
Suddenly, as he was fighting, an arrow fell on the torso of the man who was going to impale him with his weapon. He turned his gaze like the enemy men who were surprised to see a man with bad points with serious injuries on his upper body. Injuries that should have killed him. How is it possible that someone could survive such serious injuries? But his answer was quickly answered when he saw Y/N, black smoke surrounding him and he could see the urns of the men open, making him quickly understand that she had just used her power.
"Y/N?" Zuko looked at the girl who was in trance. The powers of heartbenders were likened to bad spells or black magic. But when Zuko saw Y/N trying to protect him so hard, he felt his heart beat stronger. No one had ever defended him and he had always been alone. When he saw a girl, whom he considered weak at the base, showing his power to people who wanted to harm him, he could not feel so confident. His flames mounted on his arm and he approached the girl of the earth.
"Are you okay?" Zuko asked the girl who was looking at him with fear.
“Are you asking me if I’m okay when you’re literally dying on me? Are you serious? I don’t even know what to say so that…” She was cut off by the young man’s loud laugh. “Stop mocking me, Zuko…”
“No one has ever worried about me…I don’t even know what to say…I mean, thank you!” Zuko looked at the girl with a bright smile and in his eyes he saw the hope he had been waiting for years now. He no longer needed to return to the nation of fire, he could stay with that girl who had become his beacon of hope and life.
“Well… I’m glad I could give you back your courage… I don’t know how I did it, but you’re a big guy and you don’t have to think otherwise…” The girl leaned towards the young man but was interrupted by a fireball, touching her left cheek. She looked at the young man with disbelief, her cheeks becoming increasingly red. She stepped back and got up, embarrassed by his behavior.
-----------------------------
The last soldier of the fire fell to the ground, face down. Zuko had just killed him with his flames and his shoulders relaxed when he saw no one standing. No one standing?
His eyes turned from left to right and his heart fell into his chest when he saw the body of the girl he was supposed to protect. His lungs could no longer give him the breath he needed and a cry resounded in the forest where only he could hear his purpose. Tears running down her cheeks making her breathing increasingly complicated…
