Gothamites Never Really Rest

Small warning in this: very light swearing, light mentions of deaths, and tw light touching on the subject of abuse, like very light. But still an fyi.

Danny was used to his main Rogues (Boxy, Ember, Skulker, etc etc, you know those guys) showing up randomly and at odd hours, causing some chaos around town due to their own boredom or just wanting some fun (the more deadly ones were rare to show up and his main Rogues do at least respect him enough to give him the rest of the day off when they sense a ‘big bad’ fight), he fights them, wins, before he send them back to the portal. Then they rinse and repeat this for the next day.

So as he really wasn’t expecting, especially since he had just sent his ghostly quota for the day back to the portal a few hours ago (Boxy of course, and Youngblood (dressed as a Firefighter this time, though the ending for their fight actually ended on a good note. YB had been asking Danny about space, Danny kinda hoped YB will be an Astronaut next time cause that would be fun)), Johnny 13 (and Shadow) to phase into his room as he was heading to bed.

Honestly (he groaned when he realized who it was, dealing with Johnny, Kitty (and Shadow) during a ‘break up’ or ‘lovers spat’ always was a pain) he was expecting Johnny to just start attacking but before Danny could demanded to know what he was doing in his room Johnny hesitatingly asked if they could talk.

Now Danny, talking to his main Rogues, like legit talking was a very rare thing. But it has happened a few times.

With Johnny asking if they could talk, his face nervous but not in a 'I pissed off Kitty and idk where she ran off to again', Danny nodded and agreed.

"Hey, so like I know we all kinda agreed not to go roaming too far from Amity because of the whole government suits guys and bringing unwanted attention to us ghosts in the names of the Super Dorks but is it alright if Kitty and I head across the state for a few days? I promise we'll be back and stay under the radar..."

"What?! Why would you guys need to something like that?!"

"....."

"Johnny, look dude I know Amity can get boring sometimes but-"

"Someone killed Kitty's abusive waste of space father three weeks ago, you know that fucker that killed us in cold blood when he found out Kitty and I were enloping. Yeah him. We felt it, we felt him die and... kid I can tell you how our cores SANG about it when he croaked. Whoever ended him, they did so for us. It was a revenge kill... It felt amazing. Its why you havent seen us too, we... we needed time to process that." Johnny quickly explained and that shut any protest Danny had up, he knew a bit of the story how Johnny and Kitty died, and it was respectful to allow one's fellow ghost to talk about their deaths should they talk of it.

With a melancholy smile and a hand petting a chirping Shadow who sprung up to comfort his other half, Johnny then said "Kitty's been avoiding returning to Gotham for ages since we woke up in the Realms and whenever we found a natural portal back to it. She's always been terrified of running into him and even being a ghost she's still can't. But he's gone now, we felt his life end and he isn't a ghost either! Like legit, if he became a ghost we'd still be able to sense our murderer you know!... Anyways she wants to visits her old haunts and maybe see if we can find some old friends, see how they're doing you know. We won't mess with them or anything, just a small pop in..."

"We... We also kinda wanna find the guy who did it too... We could feel his emotions when he ended Kitty's old man and firstly let me tell you, rage. Like a lot of it. But also we felt his need for justice and... he felt familiar... like someone we knew and he knew us. That's how we know it's a revenge kill. Someone did that for us and well.... Kitty and I wanna thank him you know."

Meanwhile in Gotham about three week prior.

A budding Crime Lord had crossed out the face of a older man from a photograph pinned onto a corkboard, below and connected by red strings was two other papers as well. One held the newspaper clipping of two bodies being found in a ditch with the remains of a busted up motorcycle, a young male and female were reportedly found halfway buried in it. The male was reported to be a trouble maker from Crime Alley, knowen for stealing tires while the female was the daughter of a suspected mob boss.

The other string however, lead to a small, yellowed from age and tiny bit damaged photo of three people. The photo held two older, nearly out of their teens, male and female both looking like rough city street kids. A motorcycle could be seen behind them an it was missing a wheel. The young man with blonde hair was kneeling on the ground, his hands holding onto a tire iron and he looked rather proud, the young female was wearing red and had some dye in her hair and was smiling as she held the camera taking the picture in a selfie as best as she could.

In between the two was a young kid, blue eyes and black hair, a beaming smile on his face as his own hands were on top of a tire wheel. A wheel he had finally learned how to take off in record speed thanks to Johnny teaching him.

Green eyes that shifted for a second to teal stared at the photo for a moment before saying

"Hope you both are resting easily now. Kitty, Johnny."

Turns out Johnny and Kitty were from Gotham back in the 70’s and where basically the Romeo and Juliette of Gotham where they were from separate mob families, or Johnny was just a biker who felling love with the mob bosses daughter. And her dad didn’t like that so they hired a hit on him only for Kitty to warn him. They made plans to run away only for then to get in a motorcycle accident.

Jason is just confused as to why there are two glowing meta’s in his bar and when he runs their faces for identification it only gives him people who died decades ago.

“It looks like we have reached an impasse, Richard.” Nailah says dryly to one of the underbosses of the Irish mob.

“So have we, darling.” he says with a smug grin on his face and Nailah has to resist the urge to roll her eyes. “No offense I know Mrs. Holland used to handle the records but you ain’t her.” 

“Mmhmm.” the muscle in her jaw tics with frustration.

“I tell you what.” he steeples his hands in front of him. “This is complicated business, let the men handle it. Go home to daddy little girl, this isn’t one of your kitty parties.”

Anger flares inside Nailah at his last comment as she starts unbuckling the expensive Cartier watch on her wrist “You know I thought of doing this the easy way.” she states grimly placing the watch on the table and stands up sliding back her chair. “But you clearly are a stubborn asshole.” 

Nailah goes around the table and grabs him by the collar to throw him on the floor. 

“What the fuck Nailah!” he groans starting to sit up but she presses a heeled foot over his chest. 

“Handover the records.”

“Do whatever you want, I'm not scared of you.” he spits to which Nailah grins wickedly.

“Oh soon you will be.”

Tom was at his office having a meeting with his soldiers when Richard burst into the room limping and a black right eye.

“Tom! Tom!” he pants with crazed eyes.

“Richard? What the fuck happened to you?” Tom asks with a look of confusion in his eyes.

“That crazy girl!” 

“What girl?”

“That would be me, dad.” Nailah enters the room calmly fixing her watch.

“Are you alright, love?” Tom immediately stands up doing a once over to make sure his daughter is well.

“You should be asking me that, Tom!” Richard balks out and Tom shoots him a lethal glare which prompts him to shut up.

“What did he do?” Tom asks Nailah with a serious tone.

Richard gasps in horror. “I didn't do anything, I swear.” 

“Daddy, Richard here thinks I’m not suitable for handling the finances of our business. He says I’m just a girl, too young, spoiled and naive to understand how things work in the mob. So I showed him how much capable I am.” she shrugs nonchalantly.

“I-I didn’t say anything wrong.” he stutters. “Women have no place in the mob business.” 

Tom yanks him by his collar. “Listen you piece of shit if I hear anymore rubbish from your mouth I’m going to cut your tongue out. Do you understand?”

“Ye-yes Tom.”

“I want to make this clear to everybody” Tom announces standing in the middle of the room “from now on Nailah will be handling the records of the legal side of our business so you’re going to show respect and listen to every fucking word of her and if anybody got a problem you have to deal with me. Am I clear?” 

“Yes boss.” they chant in unison.

“Good.” Tom nods before turning to Richard. “And Richard, you need to apologize to my daughter.”

“Tom?” he looks at him in disbelief.

“Apologize now.” Tom states through his teeth.

“I’m sorry Ms. Holland.” Richard says half heartedly.

“Tsk, tsk if you’re going to apologize, at least do it properly.” Nailah chastises.

“Sorry what?”

“On your knees Richard.” she orders with a smirk. You had always told her that everyone is going to her in every step of her life because she is a girl but she needs to make sure to show them their place. Tom was still glaring at Richard and he valued his life more so begrudgingly he got down on his knees in front of her and took her hand in his. 

“I apologize for my behavior Ms. Holland, it won't happen again.”

“That’s better.” Nailah says and takes out a clean handkerchief from her jacket and leans forward to press it against the blood coming out of his nose. “you see if you would have just listened this all could have been avoided. Don’t make the mistake of underestimating women again in your life.” she stands straight with warning in her tone.

“Everyone leave.” Tom orders and all his men including Richard slowly file out of his office.

“I’m so proud of you. You showed them you’re my girl.” Tom ruffles her hair lovingly.

“Learned from the best.” she grins at him widely.

“C’mon let’s go to your mum’s diner and grab some of your favorite chocolate milkshake with burger and fries.”

“You always know how to make me happy.” Nailah wraps her arms around his waist.

“Because you are and will always be my little princess.” He places a soft kiss on her temple. “Nothing matters more than you.”

They rang me to let me know the crew were running late. Corrected when addressed as Mrs. He says "Ah so you're here daughter then-" and then a very loud "NO THATS OUR CLIENT" from someone else down the line.

Simon whos the manger must have made a note on my file? or else it's the trans flag drawn on the door? cos when I awncered, 1st builder very flusteredly awncered, "Mrs __? sorry! I mean they __? No thats". I told him " its ray, Just Ray is fine" and he was very relived and introduced his crew and added thier pronouns too. bless that's very touching.

(I'm not married I don't know where the Mrs is coming from. I didnt use Mx on the paper work either)

At one point I went down to awncer the phone and the apprentice is there knelt hammering the wet window putty? Okay.

Turned out thing that caused the whistle earlier was when they took out the old wooden window frame and discovered its hollow with the window threadinginto it. Apprenty its no meant to be like that.

I couldn't name the exact moment i fell in love with him. Maybe it was the very first time i saw him. He was so firm, so self absorbed. Like a role model from a magazine. He looked like a god in his black suit with his short hair and ocean blue eyes. When he first looked into my eyes, i thought my legs would give up on me. Even if it wasn't love, it was something. Need. I needed him. I needed to feel him, touch him. I needed to get him. He was looking for an old music vinyl. I helped him out, and he didn't left. We started talking about music, asked me for some modern music recommandation. I hoped that maybe he felt what i felt too. He did. He bought 5 CDs, and promised me to come back the next day, to show me one of his oldest vinyls. He kept his promise. And he kept coming. Every day for a week. And then he asked me on a date. I kept smiling to myself. When i first saw him, he looked like the guy who would just fuck a girl and leave. But the date he planned for us was something else. Like he was from an other age. And he was. Or maybe i fell for him on our fifth date. He was walking me home, like he always did, and we saw a lost kitten. He picked up the kitty with so much care, he was so gentle, so caring with it, my heart melted. We took him to a shelter, but a few days later he came to the disc shop with Alpine, the lost kitty we found together, who now was adopted by him.

The first night we spent together was also magical, i could feel how deeply he feels for me with every kiss, every trust, every groan.

Sex with him, was never boring. He could be so dominant, rough and demanding, whispering dirty little things in my ears, pulling my hair just how he wanted, just how i liked it. No matter how rough he was during our bed activities, the aftercare was never missing. The moment we both reached the bliss, he turned back into the most gentle human on the planet. Other nights, we were making love. Truly. Deep, gentle, loving. He made me fall for him, slowly, day by day, moment by moment. When he proposed, i was the happiest girl on the planet. We got married, and I thought we would live happily ever after. Only if i knew what was coming for us.

The day he told me about his job, i hated him. Hated him for lying to me, for putting himself in danger, for not telling me an as important detail as he is the biggest mafia leader in town. Hated him for putting our relationship and our future in danger. He slept in the guestroom for so long. "Slept". Neither of us could sleep witout the other one. We were depending on each other more than we ever should have. Both of us were suffering. It took me long to finally understood his point of view. But I did. He came back to our bed, and showed me his empire. I married a buisnessman and he made me a queen. He treated me like one, his people had to treat me like one, only I didn't want to be one. I didn't want to be protected. I wanted to protect myself. So he taught me self defense. I learned to defend myself while the only thing i didn't learn was how to protect him.

The day he died, I died too. I loved him with everything I had in me, and he took the biggest part of me with him to the grave. Life is ironic. You could be the biggest mob boss of all time, you can have a thousand rivals who are all after you, wanting to kill you, and the next moment a drunk driver who has no idea who you are will hit you with his car. The doctors would fight for your life, but their effort are worthless. Your time here is gone.  A man born im 1917 who died in 2022. A long-long life, full of suffering and love. That is how i feel sitting here, next to your tombstone, your name on it feels like a strangers name. James Buchanan Barnes. The name that your daughter will hear, and never know the meaning of, because she will never be able to miss you. She will miss you as a father but not as a person. Because there's noone like you, my dear. And there's no way to show our daughter the love you had for her. Show her your laugh, your caring, loving personality, your smile, your eyes and the way you looked at me, and her when she was in my belly. She will never truly know who her father was and how much she meant to him. Maybe we all will be together again... someday... somehow.

Story: Drury Walker was a successful entomologist and retired thief working in the Henry Cobblepot Zoo. Raising his seven year old daughter Catherine "Kitty" Walker, Drury struggled between his life's work and his duties as a single father after his wife was murdered on the streets of Gotham. However, his already struggling life would only take a turn for the worst when his daughter was stricken with a highly rare and uncurbable terminal disease which effected the blood and it's flow throughout one's body. Following his daughter's growing condition, Drury and all other employees at the Zoo were let go from their positions after the zoo was shut down due to the allegations of Oswald Cobblepot's illegal animal smuggling were revealed and the mob had interfered with the finances while Cobblepot also struggled to keep his empire afloat after Roman Sionis began to take command of his empire from the inside before botting Penguin out to the streets. The following night, Drury was robbed of his funds and his home was foreclosed. Living in a rundown apartment and with no other business looking to hire him, Drury saw no other choice but to contact his old employer Norman Seinfeld and take back his old job as a part time thief. Accompanied by his old colleagues Cyrus and Croc(no relation to Waylon) the trio set out to the now closed down zoo to retrieve a certain chemical which Cobblepot had smuggled in just before everything spiraled out of control. Looking to get his hand on the chemical first, Norman sends the three to collect it and bring it to his own boss Theo Galavan for leverage against Cobblepot. Things would only get worse for Drury however then the new vigilante known as Batman arrived to stop the criminals. As Croc fired at the Dark Knight, Drury was knocked onto the while moths flew around the lite lamp. Taking this time to escape with the vat of chemicals, Drury had not gotten far with it when Croc accidently shot through the container, spilling the chemical all around and onto Drury while the moths flew all around him and landed onto his drenched skin, with the chemical absorbing the moths, it had them proceeded to fuse them with Drury's human DNA. Upon returning home and fallen highly ill, a silk like cocoon had formed all around him and when he awoke from his slumber he had found that he was horribly disfigured and was given the abilities of a Moth. Driven insane, and creating a suit that hides his hideous form which allows him the ability of speech while using whatever technology he could muster from the zoo which became their new home, Drury Walker takes the mantle of Killer Moth and vows to make Seinfeld, Galavan, and all of Gotham suffer for his ailment and not only find a way to cure himself, but to find a way to save his daughter. A year had passed, and now creating his own army of mutated moths with the chemical still within the busted container, and placing his daughter into a life support cocoon of his design(a la Mr. Freeze's cryo-chamber)Killer Moth later discovered a serum which could cure the terminal disease. However having a type AB- blood type, curing Kitty would prove to be difficult. Finding no choice in the matter, Drury decided that for his daughter to live, he needed someone with the closest blood type to give the serum to, but would die in the process(a la Mr. Freeze from Harley Quinn). Formulating a plan to act as the "Batman for criminals," Moth offered his protection and a promise to deliver his special moths to each head of the Mob in return for a sum of 40% of the Mob's earning. Later as Moth begins to exact his revenge, he finds that not only has Norman been killed by the newly christened Bengal, but Barbara Lee Gordon, Commissioner Gordon's daughter is A-. So setting his sights on young Barbara, Killer Moth will not only exact his revenge on Gotham, cure his daughter, but in the effort of it all make enough money to at least begin a fund to cure himself.

The Teen Titans design returns, and this time in my opinion, it looks better than before! There were a couple of changes made like his body proportion matching the style of my rogues and the addition of his newer boots redone from the last drawing.

His stance is that of his Arkham Asylum bio art, which once again is a huge inspiration for my drawings. Plus I wanted to give him a better stance than just standing there with his hands by his sides.

I have decided to change his back story a bit and to incorporate some of his original comic book role, only better imo.

hi! hello!! I am SO SORRY this took me forever, my internet was out for like a week and then the last few days I've been trying not to die from heat exhaustion LMAO. let's get rollin' for Kitty!!

1. How does your character think of their father? What do they hate and love about him? What influence - literal or imagined - did the father have?

Katya has a complicated relationship with both her parents, thanks to the whole "being unknowingly trained to take over the family crime syndicate" thing. Her father, Petyr, spoiled her when she was little and she adored him, but in her teens she essentially did her best to burn all that to the ground.

That's not to say she doesn't still love him, despite her denials of it. Though I think now she's closer to afraid, not of him, but of what he'll do if he finds out she's not dead after all after faking it almost ten years ago. She doesn't think he'll hurt her, of course not. She just doesn't want to go home.

Katya got his cunning-- if she put any effort into it, she would have been a great mob boss. She loved him, how good he was at his job, how dedicated he was to his family. She just hated that she felt like she wasn't given a choice on whether to participate.

2. Their mother? How do they think of her? What do they hate? Love? What influence - literal or imagined - did the mother have?

Hahahahahaha Katya has so many mommy issues. She thinks Klara is good at what she does, but again-- she wanted to choose whether or not to be involved. She won't admit it, but her mother wasn't actually that bad at being a mother, either. She thinks her mother is a coward for never telling her about Klara's side of the family (she could have had so much more if Klara had just... talked about her own mother more than "she doesn't speak to me").

Katya certainly got her ruthlessness, when needed; Katya is not a cruel woman, but she has her moments of being ice cold that absolutely come from Klara. She also was influenced, for better or worse, by Klara and Petyr's marriage-- they are absolutely, deeply in love; they work together beautifully; they would do anything for their family.

They would do anything for their family. Katya wholeheartedly believes her mother is responsible for her scourge aasimar traits. Whether Klara's prayers for a child were answered by some deity with a sick sense of humor or they bargained with a celestial for their daughter's safety, Katya is all too eager to pin this on her mother.

27. How do they relate to their appearance? How do they wear their clothing? Style? Quality?

Katya's appearance is everything to her. Not only for her persona as the Embodiment Of Grief (tm), but it always has been and always will be. She dresses in the finest things she can afford, all black with lots of gold accents to highlight her eyes. She ranges from traditional mourning attire to what I like to call "hot goth summer" as she's finally more comfortable with herself this year (for now lol, lmao, hehehehheh). Her appearance says more about herself than she would ever want to, and if some of that happens to be misleading? Well, that's just fine.

50. What are the prevailing facial expressions? Sour? Cheerful? Dominating?

I think based on the sheer number of times I've written the phrase, "feline grin" is her default. Most of the time, her face is covered by her veil, so her expressions are less important than her body language and her tone of voice, both of which she's worked very hard over the last decade or so to control down to the minutiae. She teases people with a hint of a smile by snagging the edge of her veil and lifting it so you can barely see her lips (and it's worked to at LEAST get her a tall goth elf boyfriend LOL). Aside from that, usually if her veil is off, she looks... vaguely haunted. Distant. Unless she's concentrating on presenting something else.

Dick Grayson and Jason Todd are the two  halves of the oldest daughter 

Dick is the responsibility. He is canonically known for being the quote mom friend and is very private by nature. His characterization shows how dedicated he is to being good even at the cost of himself and his relationships with others. Case in point: the fandom and the comics show him as the glue of the family, like every oldest daughter is.

He is me. He is responsible, acting as Bruce’s partner, and Damian’s parent while bruce is dead. He is loyal, killing the joker for the of his brother. Dick is the parts of the oldest daughter that gives and gives and gives. He is the one checking road trip bags, checking that everyone’s taken their meds, comforting after fights.

On the flip side, he bottle up his anger until it explodes. He and Bruce separate because Dick is hurting but he can’t fix it. He gets so sick of control that he runs away and lives his life in another city and for the early years is angry at jason for the relationship he and bruce have.

Jason is the aftermath of accepting trauma. He was loyal to a fault, straight a student, well enough behaved until he died. Jason’s death destroyed his father, just like the ones oldest daughter leaving can destroy a family. He was his father’s stability after dick was gone. He kept the house full of life and his death exposed the true cracks.

He was killed and his father didn’t avenge him. He came back, traumatized and furious.He is the aftermath of realizing how we’ve been treated all of our lives. Jason hates r*pists and mob bosses and people that hurt the community but he is done letting them live. He is still trying to protect but he is done being kind about it. Jason post rebirth is all of us learning boundaries and letting loose our anger for the first time.

Dick and Jason are the oldest daughter, one pre acceptance and one post acceptance. Both are complicated people that can’t be boiled down to ‘the playful one’ and ‘the one with daddy issues’.

This is a bell bottoms man. He loves the flair and the dramatics of them not to mention the retro vibe. Dick made discowing and the mullet™️ a thing in the dc universe. He loves retro styles and he isn’t afraid to say it!

Jason:

Literally anything but bell bottoms. He hates them partially because of Dick and partially because they don’t seems practical to him. Jason sticks to thrift stores so he favors wide leg styles of pants just cause they’re more practical. Loves black jeans (punk ass nerd /aff)

Cass:

No. Just no. She hates jeans so much. They aren’t stretchy or moveable like leggings, don’t allow ease of movements like skirts. If Cass has to wear them, she’ll wear cargo pants instead or maybe you can catch her in skinny jeans.

Duke:

🎵 He was a skater boy, she said, “see you later boy” 🎵 My mans loves skater styles. He likes big rips, wide leg jeans that still fit. Duke wants to be comfortable and fashionable more than anything else so his style really reflects that

Tim:

Emo boy. He only wears skinny jeans, tight as fuck skinny jeans. I love tim but he does not have a sense of fashion of what so ever. When there’s a gala, he isn’t allowed to leave the house without duke’s approval

Damian:

Will stab you. Damian grew up in soft comfortable and functional clothes. He doesn’t like jeans, and is more likely to wear a dress, especially around the comfort of the manor. He really doesn’t give a fuck if other people don’t like it

After two weeks of subtle flirting, gambling, luxurious nights as a trio and some *cough* bedroom antics Angelo began discussing with Carole about making their relationship a ménage à trois. Not only was Carole ok with this arrangement she had grown to love Luisa just as much as Angelo had. So at dinner that night Luisa joined the group. She traveled with them back to Italy and stayed by Angelo's side when Carole made the decision to move to Japan with baby Mariana.

* Angelo's second mistress and the daughter of the Zennyo yakuza family. A proud member of the yakuza with a razor sharp tongue and more then a few poisons ready to slip into someone's sake. Though she does possess a softer side with a love for painting and tending to the family garden. She's has a son by the name of Masamune and her first husband was part of a rival family but.....we don't talk about what happened about his disappearance. Her relationship with Angelo started off as a deal with the mob and the yakuza but over time she grew to care for the man with a longing to see his wife and daughter, at least once. Once she was introduced to Luisa and falls in love enough to marry Angelo in genuine honesty she decides that it's time for a family reunion.

Masamune Zennyo (picrew)

Age: 22

* Ryoko son, step-son of Angelo and Mizue's step brother. He was raised to be a leader and he carries it to his fullest. Trained in martial arts, studying in deception and strategy all the while walking with a swagger in his step. While it took him a long time for him to accept his new father he soon took the role of the boss's step-son with honor. Imagine his surprise when he finds out that not only does he has a little sister, but she and his step-mother are where his turf lies. Of course once he meets Mizue he's a little...awkward since he was an only child but grows into being caring, slightly pain in the ass inducing big brother.

NOBODY (2021)

Back in 1965 the British band The Kinks had a big hit single called “A Well-Respected Man.” It was basically the story of a dull and normal London businessman who was a slave to conventionality and has his life scheduled to the moment. As the song explained, “He’s oh so good, and he’s oh so fine, and he’s oh so healthy in his body and his mind. He’s a well-respected man about town, doing the best things so conservatively.”

Yet, as the song goes on, cataloguing his regimented and seemingly dull life, hints start to arise that he is not quite as pure as he appears at first glance. In fact, you come to realize that he is much darker than you originally surmised. Actually, he’s a bit of a sociopath who has been trying desperately – and somewhat unsuccessfully – to hide and suppress his needs and his lusts and his vices.

The opening of the movie Nobody feels much like “A Well-Respected Man.” Bob Odenkirk plays Hutch, a pathetic middle-management guy who works at his wife’s father’s business. His life is a rut of dull routines – played out economically in a brief preface showing him doing the same things repeatedly over a matter of weeks. He is not respected by neighbors or friends (not that he has many) or even his family. And he does not seem too impressed with himself either.

And yet there is a hint of something darker in his past, something he is hiding or repressing from himself and the rest of the world.

That dark past comes back to light when his home is randomly broken into one night. The thieves don’t get much – and Hutch allows them to escape when at one point he could have turned the tables on them. He held back for fear of his family being hurt. However, the mocking he receives for being chicken and not taking out the robber when he had the chance starts him on a dangerous path back to his former life.

It turns out Hutch had some kind of shadowy background in military intelligence. (Whenever someone tries to track down his records, they find them almost completely redacted.) He refers to his former job as “an auditor” – as in the last person someone wants to see at their door. His attempt to retrieve his young daughter’s beloved kitty bracelet, which was stolen in the robbery quickly escalates, eventually coming to the point where he is nearly single-handedly taking on the Russian mob.

This post-Better Call Saul version of Bob Odenkirk is also a bit of a “well-respected man” type of metamorphosis. I can remember when the dude was a comedian, co-headlining Mr. Show, writing for SNL and doing light comic gigs as asshole bosses on various sitcoms. Now, however, he makes a surprisingly able tough guy action figure.

While much of the violence in Nobody is way over the top, it is still one of the better action films to come out recently. It’s not particularly believable – not by a long shot – but the running time flies by, feeling like a long-lost 1970s vigilante movie along the lines of Death Wish, Dirty Harry or Billy Jack.

Once Hutch reopens the door on that part of his life, he becomes pretty much unstoppable, taking down dozens of befuddled looking criminals with his super-secret skills. At one point he even sets up his work factory to become like a very lethal version of the Rube Goldberg-type booby-trapped dwelling from Home Alone.

Unlike so many modern action films, though, Odenkirk’s Hutch is not indestructible. At different points in the film he is punched, kicked, stabbed, shot and blown up – and each time he is obviously seriously injured. He keeps going, but he is always in a sense of mortal danger, which makes the film significantly more suspenseful than the action films where the hero is essentially bulletproof.

Much of the violent mayhem shown is accompanied by old inspirational easy listening songs like “I’ve Gotta Be Me,” “The Impossible Dream,” “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and “What a Wonderful World” – which is not the most original idea ever, but it still works like a charm.

I can’t honestly say that Nobody is a great film. However, I will unreservedly say it’s a terrifically fun film, and sometimes that’s all you need.

PART ONE IS OUT AND HERE!

The therapist stared the small girl down. Little brown curls littered her forehead like springs as she fiddled with the teddy bear in her hands. It was a little bit tattered at the edges, a certain spot of fur matted together but it was the little blue bear that she’d had since birth, the one that hid at the bottom of her junior school bag because she refused to go to school without it… some days. Some days she preferred the small, white and slightly creepy looking cat that she’d carry around by the tale.

Her hands. Red, raw, bloody. Your own daughter, falling apart right before your very eyes.

“Rosie?” The therapist asks, trying to come to eye level with your daughter but it was difficult. Despite her blabbering on about how independent (without actually using that word) and brave she is, she struggled to even look into the eyes of a stranger.

“Rose?” You whisper, bobbing your knee up and down to get the small girls attention. “Can you talk to the lady please?”

“I don’t want to be here.” She mumbles, bottom lip falling into a pout. “I wanna go home.”

You take one of her hands in your own, thumb gently running over the little pink and white hello kitty band-aids. She doesn’t seem to notice, looking at the pile of kids toys that sat in the corner of the room.

“Harper just wants to help you like she helps me.” You try to prevent your voice from shaking and almost fail too if it weren’t for a quick side eye from the therapist. “She’s nice, sweetheart.”

Your daughter was never difficult, on edge definitely and you partially blamed yourself. She’d been bought up seeing you hide in a shell both of your old self and one of pure fear and terror, merely smiling and sometimes not even leaving the bed. On those days your daughter would lay next to you, a rerun of teen titans or how to train your dragon on Netflix. She surely heard your screams in the very middle of the night and saw you freak out whenever she was too loud.

“No, mum.” Your daughter looks up, her glassy eyes finally off of the teddy bear. She begins wriggling around in your arms, the small girl grunting as she fails down your lap. “I wanna play with the toys.”

You were unsure but eventually sigh, letting her go. The near-five-year-old jumps down, little legs making their way towards what children would call ‘Heaven’. There were lego pieces and board games and the odd Rubix cube but your attention was directed towards her little hands, the size of a large tomato but that didn’t worry you, what did was the fact that her hands were the color of one.

The therapist coughs gently, leaning forward in her seat. “So from what you’ve shown me I definitely see signs.”

You weren’t surprised, not even batting an eyelash. “What can we do from here?” You ask, foot tapping gently against the carpeted floor, a nervous habit.

“There’s nothing you really can do, neither can I considering her age. Rosie is young, this could easily just be a phase.” She almost shrugs it off casually, black glasses slipping down her nose and she was quick to shove them up again, eyelashes hitting the frames.

“So you just want me to-” You begin, with no success.

“You can bandage them, give her toys to play with and keep her nails short but that’s about it for now-”

“You want me to let my daughter keep doing this to herself? To sit back and watch?” You feel your eyes prickle and Rosie seems to ignore your sudden outburst. Either she was listening carefully as she often did, focusing despite your knowledge or she was completely oblivious, focusing purely on the game pieces.

A wave of anger washes over you, as well as fear and guilt. The system was screwed up, sure, but you didn’t know how bad until then and there. Your hands trembled, afraid that you couldn’t stop this, you couldn’t be the mother Rosie needed.

“There is nothing I can do. I’m sorry, I know it must be hard but you can help, even just by talking to her about what she’s doing.”

You grit your teeth, hands clenching around the arms of the chairs. If you gripped them any harder you fear the wood breaking off, snapping beneath your fingertips and causing a magnitude of splinters.

Rosie listens, wondering why the two adults were talking about her while she was in the room. The little girl was notorious for picking up things she shouldn’t and at that moment she was trying to decipher what they were saying and why her mum looked like she was about to cry.

Her chubby fingers toy with a Rubix cube and while she had no idea what she was doing, she adored the bright colors. However, they clashed with the pink and white that decorated her hands. The hello kitty ones were her favorite, definitely better than the wiggles band-aids that’d been forced on her last week by the teachers at school.

What was wrong with her?

“I don’t care what you have tomorrow, We need to have a fucking meeting.” Tom spat into the phone, face red hot with anger. “Your girlfriend can fucking wait. This is important.”

His hands gripped the very roots of his hair, anger racing through every phone as the man on the other end tried to get out of it. Tom couldn’t completely blame him, he’d do the same if he was about to lose his head.

The silence was all that could be heard through the other end of the phone between heavy, nervous breaths and the mobster already knew that he had this one in the bag.

“I can try-”

‘Try’ wasn’t good enough, nowhere near it for the mob boss who had already been pushed past his breaking point by the same client multiple times. He was ready to get his hands dirty again, paint the town red and grey and make those that deserved it fall to their knees.

Tom turned towards his desk, fingers clenching around the cool gun, the metal making goosebumps arise. “You will be there or I swear to god-”

“Okay! Okay, I’ll be there.” Wilson muttered, pursing his lips together in defeat.

Tom almost laughed at the nerves that were visible through even the phone. The guy's voice shook with fear. 

Tom hung up the phone, slamming it down on the desk in pure anger.
