The Host | Yandere Zoldyck Family
Tumblr media
“I’m so happy, we were able to locate the portal so quickly! Now you all can return to your world without breaking the space-time continuum!” You mused, happily sipping on the piping hot tea in front of you.
Whether you liked it or not, you wouldn’t have refused this cup. After all, it was specially crafted for and given to you by the reclusive Zoldycks. It was an honor—more like a miracle that you were being served an un-poisoned cup of tea.
You were used to prickly (read as: murderous) anomalies that were ejected into the aimless void of time. As per your occupation you housed and befriended said anomalies until it was time that they returned to their dimensions.
When you were selected at the end of your life for this position, the galactic overlords in charge assured you that this was a duty perfect for you. That no matter what, your tenants would find themselves comforted by you during their time there.
You begged to disagree even though none of your tenants had successfully ended your life yet. You prepared yourself for the day they one day would.
“Yes, it will be a shame to lose contact with a host as pleasant as you.”
Zeno smiled, closing his eyes as brought his own cup to his mouth. Letting a hand fall over your heart you silently thanked him. Another hand reached for you tearing your attention away from the former head.
“It is a shame your work keeps you so busy!” Kikyo cried, holding your hand. Gingerly running the pads of her fingers over your knuckles.
“Ah, but I feel as though I haven’t worked a day.”
“Oh, so you’re saying you like this job of yours?” The old man raised his brow.
“Of course! When I’m not hosting I’m free to do what I please and the guests that come by always make things interesting.”
Memories of the various visitors came to mind as you smiled; Kikyo puckered her lip in a pout. Her clutch on your hand had gotten slightly tighter, nothing alarming but noticeable.
“But don’t you feel overworked? Tired? Lonely?”
“There’s always the other people in the town.”
“Really? I wouldn’t have expected them to have any intelligible conversation.”
You dismissed the slight towards your community, it’d be impossible for her to realize their worth within the year. Granted they weren’t particularly strong or inquisitive; it wasn’t like they were built to be outstanding anyway. Nonetheless, they were kind to you and always understanding when it came to the guests. Not once have you needed to send a complaint to upper management. Everyone played their prescribed roles without fail.
“They can be really pleasant, once you get to know them.”
Zeno sighed, “So you say but I can’t imagine you not caring for them. You're always so forgiving.”
“Well…they have their flaws.”
“Ah! You’re too humble (Y/n)! The least they can do is honor your contribution to their pathetic lives!”
“Thank you, Mrs. Zoldyck but a cake every once in a while is good enough for me.”
“Ah! So simple (Y/n), it screams you no nothing of luxury!”
“Really I feel as though I’ve almost been overwhelmed with it with the Zoldycks here.”
“Please! If you could see the Zoldyck Estate in our world, you’d truly know luxury!”
You let her continue, chatting with her and Zeno, who occasionally chimed in. It was time to enjoy their company for they’d be gone before you knew it.

“Ne (Y/n)! Alluka wants to hold onto your jacket for a bit is that alright?”
“Oh? I barely noticed I left it behind but sure.”
You continued to walk side by side with Killua making your way to your destination. The wind was cold. Wisping at your cheeks and nose as you mesmerized yourself with the smoky puff your breath made. Catching cat-like blue eyes watching you with amusement you stopped, replacing it with an embarrassed smile.
He snickered. “What? Don’t stop on my account.”
“Oh Killua you're the only kid that makes me feel like a silly child again.”
“Eh?! You make it sound like I’m the reason you’re just childish anyway.”
You playfully hummed. “Hm. Maybe I am.”
You shared a laugh before letting your eyes begin to wander. Looking past the trees of the park to admire the clouded sky blending into the freezing lake. Despite having walked this path millions of times before, it never failed to take your breath away. Making you sigh in awe, you minded the frozen droplets hanging off the naked branches; looking as though they were a part of some artist’s canvas.
Even the rosiness that danced at your cheeks brought by your body’s attempt to warm you in the frigid season, felt magical in its own right. It was easy to lose sight of your path as your feet remember the way; allowing you to drift.
But before you could go too far the warmth of another hand-a smaller hand in your pocket brought you back. Looking down in surprise at the blushing owner looking away from you. You chuckled intertwining his smaller, rougher hand with yours as you walked with a pep in your step.
“I-I’m just keeping my hand warm. Where I’m from it never gets this cold.”
You smirked. “Sure!”
You didn’t believe him and he knew that. But that wasn’t the point anyway.
“You two seem to be getting along well.”
The monotone voice stopped the both of you in your tracks. Standing in a slim-fitted insulating jacket was the eldest of the Zoldyck children. Standing precisely on the crack in the sidewalk he demanded you meet at. You didn’t miss the annoyed click of Killua’s teeth. Or the blank foreboding stare directed at a specific pocket of yours.
“Yup, Killua offered to walk me to our meetup spot. If you’re alright with it, I wouldn’t mind if he came with us.”
Illumi robotically tilted his head, his eyes still trained on the same spot it had been focused on since he started watching you.
“I doubt Kil would find any enjoyment in where we’re going.”
Killua's eye twitched. “Oh? Where are you going?”
“Somewhere for adults, I’m sure you’d find it boring.”
“Really try me,”
The two intensely held each other’s gaze, vaguely conveying that this may need your intervention. With a well-timed sneeze, you might have saved yourself and the whole park from their ‘playful’ exchange of blows. Illumi seemed to back down first stepping closer to your unoccupied side where he waited for his brother to leave.
Said brother didn’t look all too convinced. Squeezing his hand in yours brought his attention to you, already smiling in silent reassurance.
“Hey, take care of my sweater for me ‘kay.”
The silent message was heard as Killua, who begrudgingly released your hand from his hold. With a final glare towards his brother, he’d begun to leave, watching as you turned and waved to him as he went. He also watched as his brother slipped his hand into your opposite pocket. With a final click of his tongue, he moved at speeds practically impossible for the human eye back to the apartment you’d organized for him and Alluka.
Making your way wordlessly out of the park, finally stopping within the toasty insides of a ceramics shop. With the unmolded clay in front of you and the guide having finished their instruction, you finally giggled at Illumi.
“I’d hardly call ceramics an adults-only event.”
Illumi didn’t laugh, he didn’t even look up from the shape he was focused on molding.
“I would. He isn’t a part of this so it isn’t bizarre for it to be considered an adult event.”
You decided to keep quiet about the toddler two tables down. Instead, you poked your head over the assassin’s shoulder to see what he was making. Glad you hadn’t started working on your own creation, you pulled back the raven locks that were spilling dangerously close to his work in progress.
Missing the slight stutter of his fingertips as he registered the soft, gentle hold of your fingertips he continued. Opting to focus solely on his creation with more intensely.
“I’m so glad I brought a hair tie for this exact moment.”
“...if you don’t hurry up your clay will dry and your money will go to waste.”
“Ah. So money conscious.”
Finished with a nice low ponytail, you scooched back into your seat; prepared to begin your own creation. Sparing a glance at Illumi, you expected he’d be laser-focused on his work but instead he was staring at you unapologetically. While you found this wasn’t uncommon for him it didn’t change the fact that it was still odd.
“So uh what are you making?”
“Why do you want to know?”
“I’m just asking, are you worried I’ll make fun?”
“My finished product will be more than enough to answer you, right?
“I guess so.”
You had an inkling of worry that he’d create something graphic and horrific. But you had to remind yourself: he wasn’t Milluki. Who unapologetically, on multiple accounts, scarred surprised you with animal entrails, graphic posters, and concerning digital art that bore striking resemblance to you.
Speaking of striking resemblance…you had a glorious idea.
____________________________________________________
“So…what is it?”
You hated to ask but you had to. The ceramic resembled the bare requirements of a face colored by a paint color akin to your skin tone. Somehow when you turned your head to the left side you saw a screaming face but when you turned your head to the right it looked as though it was smiling.
“....”
He just stared at you blankly (as he usually did) but you could tell there was something unfamiliar. He turned his head away from you as he reached for his creation back.
“If you can’t tell than it shouldn’t matter.”
“Don’t be embarrassed, I’m sorry!”
You held the…thing in your hands with care as you bore witness to the rare sight of an embarrassed Illumi.
“Even if I don’t know what it is I think it’s beautiful in its own right.”
“Don’t lie its unbecoming of you.”
“I’m not lying!”
You let him snatch it from your hand and tuck it in his pocket. Smiling to yourself, you found comfort in that he didn’t immediately toss it into the trashcan by the doorway. Catching up with his quick pace you held you’re wrapped creation to your chest.
“I would like to continue on now.”
“Don’t just sweep it under the rug! It’s all about growth.”

“Here you are Kalluto!”
He was doing what you had suggested: finding his own style. Alas, he still found himself taking the most buried articles of clothing from your closet and posing in the mirror. If you had noticed you didn’t say much, when you let yourself into the room he’d been given.
“I made it just for you.”
The vase had a pink hue, with speckles of purple. He liked it but he was curious why he was gifted this.
“I based it off the color of your eyes. I saw the shade being offered and I thought it’d be a perfect souvenir for you.”
His cheeks were overtaken by a hot crimson as he gingerly accepted the small vase. He loved it! Holding it close to his chest he almost missed the presence of his eldest brother outside his room. Judging by the slim-fitted jacket, his hat, and his pointed stare at the gift itself told Kalluto everything he needed to know. So that was his decision, for his day out with you? The ceramics shop?
The image of you crafting something while smiling along with him. Hands touching one another while you both crafted something beautiful. Your attention solely focused on him.
He’s so jealous.
“Thank you. It looks beautiful.”
“ I’m so happy you like it! I was worried I wouldn’t get the color right but looking at you now I see I’m right on the mark.”
Kalluto’s cheeks never changed from heir red color, causing him to tuck his head into the collar of the shirt he stole from you borrowed. Sending a cautious look at the figure in the doorway he took a gamble. He put the vase down, quickly moving to nestle his head into your stomach almost immediately having your arms wrap around him. He didn’t bother locking eyes with the observer, instead pretending to be fully enveloped by your attention.
If he did have a problem, Kalluto could argue that his time with you was limited. Therefore nothing was off the table. Not when their access to you would be gone forever. He’d rather it not be that way.

“Silva.”
The call of his wife had the current head of the Zoldyck family, wordlessly asking what she needed. Nonetheless, he responded in kind.
“Kikyo.”
The two of them were seated a ways apart from one another each sipping on their respective drinks as the candles slowly burned.
“We need to talk about (Y/n).”
“What is there to talk about?”
He knew what she wanted to talk about. Those of any authority within the Zoldyck family already had a gray consensus about their host. All that was needed was definite words, so that they could be a united front on the subject.
“On the topic of (Y/n) coming with us.”
Silva crossed his arms.
“We cannot.”
“Why not? All of us like them! They show promise in maintaining the family, they’ve even convinced Kil to come home more often!”
He wanted to grit his teeth but he didn’t. Only brought his cup to his mouth for a pensive sip.
“No, they’d never survive training. Let alone our world in general.”
He maintained his composure as he parroted Zeno’s consultation. Even as his wife slammed her own cup on the tray and opened her mouth to protest. He knew she’d ask because he had asked.
“Mr. Silva. Is it okay if I call you that or would you rather it be Mr. Zoldyck?”
It amazed him that such a meek, small, weak host would have made him even consider bringing you along with them when they returned. Their host couldn’t be farther from them brimming with compassion and mindfulness that brought out a side the family had long since fought against.
It shouldn’t have enamored them as it had. But it did. Leaving everyone in the family vying for their attention. With them the family’s prowess in killing meant nothing and it didn’t do any favors in garnering positive response.
But it was for that exact reason Zeno mused that they’d never fit in the Zoldyck family. Even if they chose the route of marrying you into the family it would diminish your time with the everyone. Favoring the one they’d marry over all others. It’d be so unfair
“Husband, this opportunity to attain a sliver of another world would benefit the Zoldyck family! Even more so as a tenant or as a servant under all our care! It wouldn’t impede the family’s strength and their rules to serve would make them an asset to explore.”
“And have them reach a butler’s strength alone. At their level?”
Kikyo hung her head covering her visor with her hands as she resisted the urge to weep. Silva refused to look at her, focusing intensely on the still liquid in his cup. The pain in this revelation was mutual.
“Mr. Silva, did you go to aquariums when you were younger?”
“For missions.”
“What about on your own?”
“What would be the purpose of that?”
“I don’t know, to see the animals. To learn about them.”
“What use would learning about these animals do? If there is no time that I’ll be within their biome it would do nothing for me to retain this information.”
“Isn’t it nice to just be in awe though? To just fathom loosely about the world we barely have begun to discover?”
The image of their excited face illuminated by the tank was the moment Silva’s first felt that emotion. It reminded him of meeting Kikyo, of having his heir, of establishing a budding lineage. He learned that feeling was better not left ignored for it could very well determine the safety of the ones he felt it for.
He’s seen it in his children, in all his children, so he could only see what he could control spiraling for the others. He could only think about the repercussions for when they returned home. There’d be no way to cull it easily; with you being literal dimensions apart.
Kikyo’s sulking stopped abruptly her hands folding to sit on her lap.
“Perhaps there is a way to bring them without breaking the rules.”
Blue eyes look at her expectantly.
“The Zoldyck’s have not encountered anyone worthy enough to consider adoption.”
“Adoption?”
“Yes, the process hasn’t been used within the family before…if it were to be implemented–” There was something hopeful within her voice and a twitch of a smile on Silva’s lip.
“Then the rules that qualify the one adopted would be entirely up to the head of the family.”
Silva attempted to resist the smile that spread across his face, as he leaned back onto his hand. How apparent would it be that their host had such an impact on them since they left the mansion? But even so, this was proof that they should have their host after all.
“I’ll have to check with Zeno…but perhaps it might be a veritable solution.”
____________________________________________
You were glad you spent the night before sobbing your heart out. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be able to smile through the Zoldyck’s goodbyes. Granted none of them, except for Kalluto and Alluka, were even close to shedding a single tear. Nonetheless, you hugged them all trying to calm yourself.
The otherworldly energy spewing from the portal never made you nervous before and yet your hair was standing on end. Your tolerance for fearful situations had decreased significantly as you got to know the Zoldyck family but it never completely went away. You weren’t an idiot.
They were a family of assassins.
It’s foolish not to expect threats on your life at every other turn. But this had an effect on you on a deeper level than that. This was more unsettling.
Was it the amount of place-holding spirits killed during their stay? Or the physical planet of this dimension lurching as it coughed up one of the most murderous families to stay here? Or was there something wrong with the integrity of the dimension itself?
You were tethered to the realm and it was tethered to you. For the most part, it only means you have a loose idea of what’s to come with the weather or an effect on a guest’s actions. But in times of dire situations, you’ve had the world reach out to you. At this point, you were already looking for a sign.
But that wasn’t your main focus not when the younger ones were keeping you occupied. Hanging on your arms were Alluka and Killua; the latter was playfully mirroring the former.
“Aw (Y/n)! We’ll miss you so much!”
“Yeah! We’ll miss you soooo much!”
“Ah Killua at least you could pretend to be serious about this.”
Spying Kalluto a ways off clutching the vase you had made him you gave him a small smile.
“This relocation didn’t turn out to be a complete waste.”
Milluki spoke up, unabashed as he pulled along a cart of all his anime and gaming memorabilia. You could see the invisible sneers of disgust from majority of the family, Killua didn’t even bother hiding his.
“For once I’d agree,” Illumi chimed sending a bottomless look in your direction. “There were plenty of…unexpected trades to learn in a world devoid of hunters.”
“Thank you?” You shrugged.
Zeno let out a chuckle putting a thoughtful hand on your back.
“I think all of us in the Zoldyck family have learned quite a bit.” You had to fight the tears now.
“For that we thank you.”
The entirety of the Zoldyck family bowed to you, leaving you to fight tears at the demonstration of respect and love they had for an average-dimensional host. Fanning at the water building up in your eyes you bowed and thanked them yourselves.
“You guys! Get over here and give me hugs!”
You made sure to hug every member of the family even if they made unsettling comments as you did Milluki.
Getting the timing perfectly right the portal opened to its full size, the electric blue illuminating everyone’s faces. You could smell the atmosphere of the Kukuroo mountain and the forest upon it. All that was left to do was for them to enter.
“Alright now as stated before time has only been an hour in your world. Now you will be coming down from the sky but I’m sure you all will manage.”
“Thank you for everything (Y/n).”
You bowed your head to the patriarch missing the devious glint in his eyes.
“Of course.”
Starting with Silva they each dove into the portal, leaving you to stand by yourself in the field of sunflowers selected as a gateway. Turning away from the flashing portal you could finally address the world’s message for you. The surrounding grass began to lay down unnaturally, spelling out a word.
“They–”
You bent to down watching as the green blades folded into more words, filling your heart with trepidation as it spelled slowly.
“--will not–”
The blades continued to fold slowly as the sunflower stems frantically sprouted from the ground. Not bothering to wriggle free from the stems wrapping around your wrists, you tried to hurry the world’s spelling. Why did you feel like you needed to rush?
“-let you go–? Wait what the he-”
Before you could finish a translucent, glowing, and golden dragon, like one from Japanese folklore came out of the portal. Wrapping around your entire body it skillfully carried you into the shrinking portal. Only stopping for a short time to wriggle free of the sunflowers that were simultaneously pulling at your limbs.
Now on the other side of the portal, you were being pulled backward. Your front looking at the endless sky watching the portal shrink and close, slicing the desperately reaching sunflowers and their stems.
Something within you seemed to break but before you could dwell on that you finally tried to register what was going on.
“AHHHHH!”
Diving with you in it’s coil the dragon was rocketing in the direction of a mansion. All you could do was hold tight as the dragon slowed to a stop. Gently letting you lie on the floor, taking a moment to ground yourself you barely registered the booming voice.
“Congratulations (Y/n), you’ve been inducted into the Zoldyck Family.”
“W-what?”
“As the adopted of the Zoldyck, you’re duty to the family is to be protected and to participate in the family to the best of your limited abilities.”
“Wait—”
“Per your lack of Zoldyck blood, your title as the adopted is willing to change for the family’s convenience.”
“HOLD ON!” You stood up fully holding your shaking hands out as you began to process what this would mean. Before you can get a word in Kikyo runs up to you, shoving your head into her chest as she rocks your unsteady form.
“Rejoice my (Y/n)! Now for all the care you’ve given us, we get to take care of you!”
“Mother, you’ll smother them.”
“Ah big brother, don’t need to get jealous I’m sure you’ll get your turn.”
“I know that.”
Unable to speak or look too far away, you felt Alluka and Kalluto grab at your pant legs. No doubt they glared at one another as they vied for your attention.
“(Y/n)!” ”(Y/n)!”
Being no help at all Killua wasn’t too far behind, ”Oi don’t hog them all.”
Whether it was the exhaustion of dimensional travel or losing air within your mother Kikyo’s breast. Beginning to lose consciousness you could barely make out the ghost of a smile on Silva’s face. Zeno withheld no courtesy, smiling happily as he turned away.
After all, you were home with them. Where you belonged.
Surely the Zoldyck family could handle the dimensional repercussions of claiming their host.

bell bottom blues (joel miller x f!reader)
Tumblr media
Masterlist | Ko-Fi
Summary: you're the town seamstress and you've had a crush on joel miller for ages. when he gifts you a pair of bell bottoms, you go to his house and finally confess your feelings leading to a night of whiskey and fun. Inspired by the song 'bell bottom blues' by eric clapton/derek and the dominos
Rating: M, 18+
Word count: 6.5K
Content: a fluffy smut, if you will. shy joel, joel playing guitar, age gap (20+ years), pining, miscommunication, alcohol use, dirty talk, fingering, oral (f and m receiving), unprotected sex, creampie
A/N: I've been on a bit of a writing hiatus due to work and personal obligations, plus some fandom drama. but when the bug calls, the bug calls. I hope you guys enjoy and remember to like and reblog! <3
“God I wish I had her tits.” You bemoaned, raking through an old magazine. You found it with a film of dust in the safety hideout you had all primarily used when patrolling and you just couldn’t keep your eyes away from it.
“Way to keep your eye on what’s important.” Your watch partner, Joel, deadpanned while surveying the area.
“It’s my break time so no judgment, old man.” You looked up at him from the couch you were sitting on. The door was open to let in the cool fall air and so you could converse with Joel. “I didn’t say anything when you brought your guee-tar on our last watch together.”
"Very funny." Joel drawled. "But I don't seem to recall you complainin' much when I played "Blackbird"."
You huffed, a little smile pulling at the corner of your lips as you turned the page. "That's because it's a good song."
He grinned to himself, looking out the window again. "It sure is."
You two fell into a comfortable silence while you continued to read your magazine. That was the best part about patrol days with Joel, he was a great listener and you felt comfortable confiding in him.
When he had originally shown back up to Jackson with his kind-of-daughter Ellie, nobody had really known what to make of him. You'd heard stories from your community's leader Maria since she was married to his brother, Tommy, but she had never actually met him until they had stumbled upon the commune for the first time. As far as Tommy's advice on what to make of him? "Give him some space but make sure you get to know him. He's not as bad as he might come across."
You hadn't understood at the time what he meant by that but after spending more time with him around the town you had started to figure him out. For instance, he was a great listener, a hard worker, and had a very dry sense of humor. Also, he was incredibly handsome in a rough-around-the-edges type of way. You two had fallen into a comfortable friendship whenever you'd seen each other around or had to patrol together. In the world before the outbreak, you couldn't have imagined being friendly with a man twenty years your senior. But that was the world before the outbreak, you thought, smiling a bit to yourself.
"You got something good there, darlin'?"
You glanced up at him, your heart jumping at the sudden noise after the quiet for the past half hour. You could feel a blush crawling up your neck.
"Uh, not really." You flipped the page, trying to play it cool. "I just like to look at the models and dream."
Joel turned his head to look at you, one brow raised. "Dream, huh?"
"Yup. I mean look at these bright fabrics and patterns. Can you imagine having a wardrobe with any of these colors in it?" You held up the page you were on, showing Joel the vibrant pink dress the model was wearing. It was a halter top with tight jeans and a flare at the end and the woman's long, dark hair cascaded down her shoulders. The image made you ache for a world that was long gone.
"God, I would kill for those jeans." You moaned.
"They're called bell bottoms." Joel corrected you.
You sat up, your mouth dropping open. "How did you know that?!"
He smirked at you, returning his gaze out the window. "I wasn't always an old man, ya know. I used to wear them back in the day."
"No shit?"
"No shit." He confirmed, chuckling a bit. "I was about ten when I wore 'em but those were the style back in the day. I think I had a pair in green."
You stared at him in amazement. "Can you imagine that? Green bell bottoms?"
Joel's face turned into a grimace. "More of my momma's fashion choice for Tommy and me."
You smiled fondly. "If I had a pair like these I'd stich them up and wear them out to the bar. I can't believe they made things like this."
Besides patrolling, you had also used your skills in the commune with clothing and it was no secret which one you preferred. You loved taking old, worn, and ragged pieces of clothing and fixing them up to give them a new life. The thought of being able to take something that was broken and give it new meaning and purpose was exciting and thrilling.
"You've got quite a talent, y'know. Those clothes you make look like you took them right outta the magazine." Joel said, glancing over at you. "You should be proud of yourself."
You smiled at him, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear. "Thanks, Joel. It's nice of you to say."
"Well, it's the truth."
The sound of a twig snapping approaching made the both of you jump. You sprung up and grabbed your gun. Joel was already at the door, looking out the window.
"What is it?" You asked, your hand steady on the gun.
"It's a damn deer." He said, shaking his head.
"Thank god." You sighed. You placed your gun down and joined him at the window, looking out to see the animal. The deer was grazing and seemed unconcerned about the two of you. You watched it move with a sense of tranquility and ease.
"You scared?"
You glanced up at him. His brow was creased and his lips were drawn. You realized this was the first time you'd ever been this close to Joel Miller. You took a moment to study his features. At first glance, his eyes, dark and deep, are the most captivating. They have the kind of depth that has his entire story - joy, sorrow, and everything in between. You've seen them twinkle with mischief specifically with Tommy and Ellie, and cold and impenetrable when talking to someone he doesn't particularly like.
He's got the faintest scars, a reminder of the life he lived before Jackson, and a smattering of freckles on his chest that are barely visible. You can see the fine wrinkles on his forehead and around his eyes and wonder how many times he's smiled in his lifetime and how many more smiles you could give him.
He calls your name. You shake your head, breaking yourself out of the fantasy. "No. Should I be?"
"Nah. Not with me here." He smiled.
Your stomach clenched, and you felt heat creep up the back of your neck. He kept his eyes on you, searching for a reaction.
"We should probably finish our watch." You said, tearing yourself away from the moment.
Joel stood there, unmoving. He was studying you. A silly little girl with a stupid crush, you thought. You could feel his stare but ignored it, picking up your weapon and returning to the couch.
"We should." He finally agreed.
And as much as you wanted to focus, you couldn't help but continue to study Joel when your nose wasn't in the magazine.
---------------
Joel should've known you weren't interested.
You were young, beautiful, talented, and easy-going. Even from the first day he was back in Jackson he could see the way people were drawn to you. When you walked up and talked to him for the first time he was surprised there were still people out there that were still so friendly and warm. He was so used to being the suspicious asshole, the guy who always had a plan and a reason for being, but not with you. You'd just come up and started chatting him up like he was one of your good friends, expecting nothing in return.
That's the thing about you that's always amazed him. You don't expect anything. He doesn't have to go out of his way to prove his worth to you or show you what a good man he can be. You just trust him.
When the two of you got closer than you ever had on that afternoon patrol, Joel felt a stirring in his gut he hadn't felt since Tess. The tightness in his pants was a sign, too. An unfortunate sign at the time you were supposed to be patrolling for clickers but a sign nonetheless. He'd noticed the way you'd looked at him as you watched the deer. He wasn't that old, yet. He could still recognize a spark when he saw it.
But he also saw the way other men in town looked at you. Men closer to your age, men with more to offer. Men without all the baggage and darkness and secrets. Men who could treat you right.
So, he buried the spark and kept you as his friend. It was better that way.
------------------
"Look alive, you old fucker." Tommy nudged Joel's arm, walking up to the abandoned house. They were doing a scouting mission in the outskirts of Jackson. There had been a small group of raiders spotted the night before by a patrol.
"I'm more than alive. I'm kicking your ass."
Tommy rolled his eyes, smiling. "Sure. Keep telling yourself that."
They both pulled out their guns, ready to clear the place.
"You ready?" Tommy whispered, nodding towards the door.
"Yep." Joel responded, grabbing the doorknob and opening it.
It was a pretty standard scene for a raider's camp. There were blood splatters on the floor, bullet casings, and empty cans everywhere. Joel had seen it many times before and he was certain Tommy had too.
"It's like a fucking pigsty." Tommy remarked, walking towards the stairs.
"No kiddin'." Joel responded, looking around. "I don't think anyone's here."
"Let's check the upstairs and then head home. I wanna tell Maria about this."
They checked each room upstairs. Most of the bedrooms were empty, except for one. The last room they had to check had the door locked.
"What's this?" Tommy said.
"Let's break it open." Joel suggested.
"No. We'll try to pick the lock."
"Fine." Joel said, crouching down and grabbing Ellie's bobby pin he always carried. "This won't take long."
Joel inserted the bobby pin into the keyhole, moving it around to jiggle the mechanism inside. After a minute or two he opened the door.
"Well, that's not what I was expectin'." Joel said.
"Were you expectin' blood and guts?" Tommy responded, raising his eyebrows.
"Yeah, pretty much."
The brothers surveyed the bedroom. There was dust swirling in the air and a thick layer on every surface. It looked like the room had been abandoned for a while. A queen sized bed sat against the wall with a nightstand beside it. A dresser and a full length mirror were in the corner.
"We should still check everything out, just in case." Tommy motioned Joel into the room.
They searched the area and found nothing but the normal. They were almost done when Tommy found the closet.
"What do we have here?" He said, pulling the doors open.
"Just some clothes." Joel said.
"Looks like we've got a few treasures. What's that?" Tommy pointed at the back of the closet.
Joel pushed some clothes aside and a pair of jeans with a flair at the bottom fell to the ground. "Bell bottoms."
"Well, I'll be." Tommy smiled. "Do you remember these things?"
"Yeah." Joel replied, immediately remembering your conversation.
"What're those doing all the way out here?"
"Probably left behind by the original owners." Joel mused. Without hesitation, he grabbed the pants and tucked them under his arm.
Tommy turned and looked at him, his brow furrowing. "What're you doin' with those?"
"Gonna bring 'em home."
"To who?" Tommy had a shit-eating grin on his face. "Last time I checked those ain't really Ellie's style. I could think of someone who might be able to fix those up, though."
Joel's gaze shot to his brother. He glared at him. "Don't you dare."
Tommy raised his hands, surrendering. "All right, all right. I won't say a word. But I'm sure she'll love 'em. You could bring her a goddamn necklace full of teeth and she'd love it because it's from you."
Joel's heart raced at the implication. "What're you talkin' about?"
Tommy rolled his eyes. "Jesus Christ, Joel. Let's just get outta here so you can give her the goddamn pants."
------------------
Joel stood outside of the door to your house, the bell bottoms neatly folded in his hand. He could hear you rustling around inside and was nervous to knock.
"You can do this, old man." He told himself.
He knocked on the door, a quick rapping sound, and stepped back.
A second later, the door opened, and his face dropped. You hadn't answered the door. Instead, it was Nick, a tall, handsome young man who works at the stables. He had the kind of face that Joel used to see in cheesy teen movies he would bring Sarah to see. He had a strong jawline, sandy blonde hair, and broad shoulders. He looked at Joel and then down to the pants.
"Can I help you, Mr. Miller?"
Mr. Miller. Jesus Christ.
"Uh...." Christ and he couldn't even find his words. "I came by to uh..."
"Joel?" Your voice cut through his thoughts. He could see the confusion on Nick's face when you walked up. You smiled at Joel warmly, like a ray of sunshine. "Hi."
"Hey, darlin'." Joel smiled, his nerves disappearing.
"What are you doing here?"
"Oh, I was just bringing these by." He said, holding out the pants to you. "I, uh, found 'em and thought maybe you could work some of your magic."
Your face lit up. "These are bell bottoms! Are you serious? Where did you find these?"
Joel could feel the smirk tugging at his lips. "Out and about. Tommy and I cleared a place the other day and found 'em."
"Joel, this is incredible!" You looked at him, your face shining with excitement as you went in to hug him. He was frozen, the warmth and scent of your body enveloping him. "I can't wait to get started."
"I'm glad you're happy."
You pulled away, giving him a quick smile before turning back to Nick. Joel could see his face drop a bit, and his stomach tightened.
"You can keep them here and work on them tomorrow. We've got a dinner date tonight." Nick said, wrapping his arm around your waist and pulling you close. Your eyes remained on Joel, though and your hands stayed at your sides.
Joel's chest ached. You were going on a date. With Nick. A boy, not a man. And not him.
"I, uh, don't want to hold ya'll up." Joel said, taking a step back. "Enjoy your night."
"Thanks, Joel." You said. He could feel you studying his face.
"Yes, thank you, sir." Nick added.
Joel nodded, turned, and walked away.
------------------
"....and then nobody else could catch that thing but there I was, deep into the lake with that fucking fish." Nick said, taking another sip of his drink. "I had no idea how I was gonna catch it but I couldn't let it go. So, I just dove in after it."
Nick was going on and on about some story that you couldn't even remember how it was brought up In the first place. You just knew Nick liked to talk about himself. A lot.
A lot of girls in Jackson had liked Nick. He was young, handsome, charming, and worked hard. He had the potential to be a catch for any single woman, but that didn't mean he was yours.
But then he showed up on your doorstep earlier that day with a charming smile and asked to come In. He'd told you he was interested in you and wanted to get to know you better. You were hesitant, especially considering the feelings you had for someone else, but you'd also remembered what had happened on your last patrol with Joel. You knew you couldn't compare with an older, sophisticated woman that might come his way one day. So, you accepted. What's the point in waiting on a fantasy?
You excused yourself to go to the bathroom when you'd heard someone knock on your door and Nick open it. You were annoyed at the immediate audacity he had to open your door without asking but then heard a familiar voice. Joel's.
You rushed out of the bathroom to see him standing there with fabric on his arm.
"These are bell bottoms!" You'd said excitedly. "Are you serious?"
And when you went to hug him, his body was tense and frozen. But the smell of him, a mix of pine and tobacco, filled your nostrils. And for a brief moment you'd imagined yourself pressed against his chest and kissing him.
That feeling only intensified when he looked at you. His face was a mixture of pain and jealousy and you realized that maybe he had felt something for you, too. But it was too late. He'd turned away and left.
It was the sweetest gesture and you couldn't even properly thank him because Nick had interrupted and ended the conversation about your date. You hated the way he slid his hand around your waist, it was such a gross power move. He acted like he owned you before he had even bothered to take you to dinner.
You tried to stay present with Nick but he wasn't making it easy. He had barely asked you about yourself, but you also were guilty of not engaging much.
"What do you think, doll?"
"What?" You snapped out of your thoughts, looking up at him. "I'm sorry, what did you say?"
"About the lake? The fish? The dive?"
"Oh." You'd said, a wave of relief coming over you. "Wow, that's a crazy story. I'm sure the whole lake was shocked."
"They sure were." He laughed.
You forced a smile, looking down at your half-eaten meal.
"You know, I think you're the most beautiful girl in Jackson...." Nick started as your eyes started to wander across the room. You kept scanning for Joel to see if he was coming to have dinner in the dining room but he wasn't there.
You kept looking around until you saw Ellie, she was saying something to Dina and laughing and then heading out.
"Ellie!" You called out. She turned around and smiled, walking over.
"Hey! What's up?" You looked at the plates she had wrapped up and her heart sank.
"Just saying hi. I see you're wearing the flannel I fixed up." You pointed out.
"Yep, I love it." Ellie smiled, holding her arms out to showcase it. "Thanks again. Joel was happy you helped."
"Where is he, by the way?" You tried to act as nonchalant as possible but you heard Nick scoff.
"He's at home, actually. He wasn't feeling too well so I'm gonna drop him off some food before I come back to hang with Dina and Jesse."
You frowned. "Oh."
"If you'll both excuse me, I gotta use the John." Nick said, standing up. Not even remotely pretending he was interested in the conversation.
"He seems like a keeper." Ellie deadpanned.
"The kind of boy you bring home to your mother." You rolled your eyes, and she snickered.
"Is there a reason you're asking about Joel?" Ellie inspected you. For someone who was so young, she had a knack on picking up on things like that. And she had absolutely no filter about it.
"No." You shrugged. "He was just at my place earlier and gave me some bell bottoms. I just wanted to check on him."
"Ooooh." Ellie's eyes sparkled with mischief.
"Stop." You said, glaring at her.
She turned her hands up in defense. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. But all I'm gonna say is this, if you wanna check on him I don't think he's going anywhere all night and I'm sure he'd appreciate some company. Especially your company."
"Thanks, El." You beamed at her.
"Anytime. Enjoy the rest of your date."
You smiled, watching her leave the dining room.
Your stomach was still in knots and your nerves were going haywire, but you had made up your mind. You were going to visit Joel.
When you got up to talk to Nick and you saw him leaning down on another table to talk to another girl, It was clear he had made up his mind too.
-----------------
Joel strummed his guitar on the front porch, a glass of whiskey sitting beside him. His leftover plate from Ellie was next to him.
He had decided to eat at home instead of eating in the dining room because he couldn't deal with the embarrassment of seeing you again, especially across the table from another man.
So, he ate and played his guitar and drank his whiskey.
It was starting to get dark, and the stars were becoming visible. Joel was trying to focus on the stars instead of thinking about you. But it was hard, especially when he could hear the laughter and conversations going on in town.
He picked his guitar back up and started to strum.
Bell bottom blues, you made me cry
I don't want to lose this feeling
And if I could choose a place to die
It would be in your arms
He continued to sing, closing his eyes and focusing on the song.
I don't want to fade away
Give me one more day, please
I don't want to fade away
In your heart I want to stay
"Nice song."
Joel straightened up and peered out into the darkness. He saw you walking up towards his porch, a shy smile on your face.
"Didn't mean to interrupt." You said, climbing the stairs. He couldn't help but notice how beautiful you looked, even in the dim light. You had your hair down and a thin sweater covering a flowy dress. He could make out the shape of your body and the curves of your breasts, and the way the dress fell at your hips. He cursed himself for noticing and then cursed the fact that his cock stirred when he did.
"You're not." He said, standing up and putting his guitar down. "How was your date?"
You sat down next to him, taking a sip of his whiskey while rolling your eyes.
"Well, he talked a lot. I talked a little. He was rude and didn't ask about me. And I was really distracted."
Joel grunted in acknowledgment and continued to strum as the two of you fell into a warm silence.
"What's the song you're playing?" You asked.
Joel took a deep sigh. He knew once he told you, it was over. He couldn't lie to you.
But fuck It, he'd had some whiskey and it was now or never.
"The song is called 'Bell Bottom Blues', actually."
"Interesting." You mused, leaning back in your chair. "What's the song about?"
Joel stopped strumming. He looked at you, and you were staring at him.
"It's about a guy who has this woman. He knows that they could be great together. She makes him feel happy and good, and everything that a man wants. But the problem is, she doesn't want him."
"Well, that's depressing as shit."
"Yeah." He chuckled, his heart heavy. "It's depressing, but it's also true."
"So, she doesn't love him."
"Right."
"But why doesn't she love him?"
"Because he's old. He's not her type. And he's just a grumpy sonofabitch."
"Who wrote this song?"
"Eric Clapton."
"Well, did this Eric Clapton guy know he wasn't her type or did he just assume she thought he was a grumpy sonofabitch?"
"He assumed."
"Okay. So, maybe the girl is just confused."
"Or maybe she's just not attracted to him."
"I don't know about that. I'd be attracted to a man like that. If he was honest with me and treated me right. That's the important part."
"Yeah, I guess so." Joel replied, his heart racing.
"You guess so? You're an interesting man, Joel Miller."
"I've been told." He smirked, taking another sip of his whiskey. "So, why did you come here?"
You stared at him, a small smile tugging at the corners of your lips.
"Well, I came here to properly thank you but now that I'm here I think I'll just drink some more of your whiskey and listen to you play more about how wrong this Eric Clapton is."
Joel laughed. He looked at you and saw the warmth radiating from your face. He couldn't believe his luck.
"Whatever the lady wants."
"The lady does indeed want." You beamed, and Joel got up and opened the door inside, leading you in.
"All right, darlin', come on in."
--------------------
After a few more glasses of whiskey, you were feeling warmer and relaxed.
Shyness had gone completely out of the window and you were curled up next to Joel, a blanket over the two of you as he strummed the guitar. You were close enough that his knee was against yours. You could feel the heat between you and it made your head spin.
You leaned into him and rested your head against his shoulder. He smelled so good, and the warmth of his body radiated onto yours.
"I'm glad I'm here." You whispered.
"I'm glad you're here, too."
"Joel...Do you think I'm like the girl in the song?"
Joel paused. He put the guitar down and turned to you.
"Well, first of all, you're not a girl." He whispered, his voice low in your ear. "You're a woman."
You closed your eyes, feeling a shiver run down your spine.
"And secondly, I don't think you're anything like the girl in the song. At least, I hope not."
"I'm not." You assured him, your voice soft.
"Then why did you ask?"
"I just want to make sure you're not writing me off because of a song. I'm not some immature girl. I like the way I feel around you, and I'm not afraid to tell you anymore."
"Anymore, huh?" Joel asked. He moved his hand, placing it on your hand. You could feel the warmth and roughness of his palm. "So, if I were to kiss you, would that scare you away?"
"Not at all." You whispered, turning to him. Your eyes met and you could see the fire behind his. You'd seen that fire before, but never so close.
"Good."
Joel placed his hands on your cheeks and brought his lips to yours. Your body stung with excitement and you melted into him, wrapping your arms around his neck.
His beard tickled your skin, but the softness of his lips against yours made your body ache. You kissed the open patches in his beard you had daydreamed about kissing and ran your hands through his hair.
There was no chasteness in your kiss, thanks to the whiskey. Instead, you slipped your tongue into Joel's mouth as he groaned.
He pulled back for a moment, staring at you.
"This is not what I thought would happen." He admitted.
"Me neither." You grinned. "Should we stop? What time is Ellie coming home?"
"She's stayin' the night with Dina actually."
"Well, if that's the case. I should really thank you properly for that gift you showed up with."
Joel's eyes lit up.
"I'll accept whatever thank yous you have."
"I bet you will."
You straddled him, looking down at him as he kept his hands safely on your waist. You could tell he was restraining himself, always the gentleman, but you were tired of holding back how you felt.
You kissed him, hard, and bit his lip, eliciting a groan from him.
"Fuck." He growled, his fingers digging into your waist, pulling you down further onto his lap as you felt his hardening cock against you. You grinded down onto him, and fell into a rhythm while you kissed him and he gripped your waist tighter.
You removed your cardigan and Joel's hands instantly moved up your torso, toying with your straps.
"Joel...it's okay." You grabbed his hand and removed your dress straps with him. Your dress fell, revealing your breasts, and Joel's eyes darkened with an intensity he'd only saved for a hunt. You felt like his prey, and it only made you more aroused.
Joel's hand came up, gently cupping your breasts.
"You're so fuckin' beautiful." He murmured, rubbing his thumbs over your nipples. The sensation shot right to your pussy and your hips continued to move in reaction.
You started to undo the buttons on his shirt, and he helped, throwing it to the side. You pulled him closer, feeling his hot chest against yours, his muscles tense and his arms around you. You kissed his neck, and his collarbone, and then kissed his chest.
You could hear his heavy breathing as you trailed your hands down his torso and his cock strained against his jeans.
"Joel." You whispered, moving off him to kneel in front of him.
"You don't have to." He said, looking at you with a pained expression. You could tell he was still trying to be a gentleman and hold back, but you were done holding back with how much you wanted him.
"I want to. I want you." You said as you slipped his jeans off. His erection was prominent through his boxers and you could see the wetness at the tip of his cock.
Joel let out a soft groan, watching you take off his boxers. His cock sprang free, and he hissed as the cool air hit him.
You had been guilty of spending nights thinking about what Joel Miller would feel like on top of you, inside you and in your mouth. But nothing could prepare you for the real thing.
His cock was thick, a beautiful length with a slight curve. Precum was leaking from his tip, and you wrapped your hands around his base, stroking him up and down.
"Jesus." Joel groaned. You felt his hand reach out, gently grabbing the back of your head and guiding you closer. You licked the precum off his tip and he moaned.
You licked down his length and then took his cock into your mouth. Joel's breath caught, and his fingers tightened in your hair.
"That feels so good." He said, his voice gravelly and low. You took more of him in your mouth, swirling your tongue around his head and hollowing out your cheeks. Joel's hand pushed down a little harder and he let out a moan.
"Am I bein' too rough?" Joel asked with concern.
You looked up at him with full eye contact, your pupils blown. You started to ease his cock further into your mouth until you could feel his tip at your throat. You stayed there, and then started to move slowly up and down, the pressure from your tongue making Joel gasp.
"Jesus Christ, girl." He whispered, and then he started to push his hips upward, meeting you as you bobbed on his cock. His thrusts became faster, and his breath caught in his throat. You could tell he was getting close and you wanted nothing more than to feel him lose control in your mouth.
Suddenly, Joel's hand left the back of your head, and his cock left your mouth. You looked up at him with a dazed expression and watched as he stood up.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothin' is wrong." He growled. "Take off your dress and get on the couch."
You got up and slowly peeled off the rest of your clothes, his eyes never left your body. You saw his chest rise and fall with each breath as the two of you stood for a moment, studying each other's naked bodies.
Joel stepped forward and kissed you, hard. His tongue found yours and you tangled together, tasting each other. He grabbed your ass and pulled you closer to him, his cock pushing against you.
"Get on the couch, baby." He ordered, his voice gruff. "Let me fuck you."
You lay down on the couch, spreading your legs. You had been dripping wet since you'd first straddled him, and now, it was dripping down your thighs and you couldn't help but run your fingers through it.
"Fuck. You are so goddamn beautiful." He said, his voice a low grunt. He knelt down and took a finger, running it through your wetness and then pushing it inside of you.
You gasped, the sensation of his thick finger hitting you differently than your own. He pushed a second finger inside of you, feeling an overwhelming stretch.
"You're so fuckin' tight. I gotta make sure you can take me." He said, pushing his fingers deeper inside you and curling them up. You gasped, arching your back as his fingers hit a spot inside of you that you can't normally reach.
You bucked your hips towards him. "I used to dream about what your fingers would feel like inside of me."
"Is that right, baby?" Joel asked. He added a third finger and the pressure was almost unbearable, he moved at a faster pace and the sounds of his fingers pushing in and out of your wetness were filling the room.
"I'm so close." You whined, bucking your hips against him. But he could feel it, he could feel your tightness clenching around his fingers.
He positioned himself quickly to lean in and suck on your clit. It was gentle, and his beard brushed against the skin around it. It was the final thing to send you over the edge, and you came hard.
"Joel." You moaned as you reached your climax, arching your back and riding his fingers. You could feel the wave of pleasure rolling over you as you gripped his hair. He slowed his pace and then pulled his fingers out, wiping his face.
"Did I do okay?" He asked, looking at you, and you saw the softness behind his eyes.
"You did better than okay. Take me to your bedroom?"
Joel nodded, picking you up and carrying you upstairs.
-------------------------
Joel laid you down gently on his bed and stood, looking down at you, stroking his cock.
He climbed on top of you and leaned down to kiss you. You could feel his hard cock against your stomach.
"Are you ready, darlin'?" He whispered in your ear, nibbling your lobe.
"Mmm, please." You murmured, lifting your hips towards him.
Joel grabbed his cock and rubbed his head along your wetness. He pushed it inside of you, slowly, and groaned.
"Fuck, you're tight." He muttered, his body stiffening. He eased himself in further, the stretch of his cock was intense, but the feeling of fullness was unlike anything you'd ever experienced.
You felt him start to move his hips and you arched your back, taking him deeper as you opened your legs wider.
You could feel him deep inside you, hitting that same spot he'd touched earlier. Your hips bucked against his and the sound of the slapping of his hips against yours echoed in the room.
He was breathing heavily and his eyes were half-closed.
"You're so tight. Jesus Christ, you feel so good." He moaned. "Like you were meant to take my cock."
"I want it all." You whimpered, grabbing his ass to pull him closer. "I want it deep."
"God damn, baby." Joel grabbed your legs and placed them over his shoulders, giving him a better angle to thrust deeper. He slammed into you and the feeling of him against the back of your walls and the way his pubic bone pressed against your clit made you gasp.
"You wanted it deep like this?" He growled, his grip on your thighs tightening, the slapping of your skin and your moans getting louder.
"Yes." You gasped, feeling yourself reaching another climax. "Oh fuck, I'm cumming again."
You felt your walls tighten around his cock, and he moved down to press his thumb on your clit. He pressed and swirled his thumb against you, and the sensation was overwhelming. You came hard, moaning and writhing beneath him.
He slowed his thrusts as you rode out your orgasm.
"Fuck, I can feel you cummin' all over my cock." He murmured, his voice low. "It feels so fuckin' good. It feels so fuckin' good, darlin'. You're gonna make me cum."
His thrusts were becoming sloppy and frantic, and his breathing was coming faster. You were so sensitive and each thrust made your body twitch.
Neither of you had said it but you had both had the desire to have him cum inside you. You wanted to feel all of him and the thought of him filling you with his cum while you looked like a pornstar underneath him turned Joel on more than he'd like to admit.
"Cum in me." You pleaded, and that was enough. Joel's head fell back and he moaned, his body twitching.
"Fuck, fuck, fuck." He said, slowing his thrusts as his cum dripped down his cock and into you. You could feel him cumming, his cum hot and thick inside of you.
He stayed still for a few moments, the room filled with the sound of the two of you catching your breaths. Then he slowly pulled out, watching as his cum mixed with yours, dripping out of you and onto his sheets.
In one final move, he took two fingers and took your dripping cum to thrust it back inside of you.
You watched him, dazed and exhausted. He got up, panting and dazed and left the room for a few moments. When he returned, he had your clothes in one hand, and a towel and a glass of water in the other.
He placed your clothes on the floor and handed you the water. You gulped it down while he cleaned you off. You winced a bit, feeling the warm washcloth between your legs and Joel looked up at you with concern.
"Did I hurt you?" He asked, his voice low.
"Not in a bad way." You grinned.
Joel smirked and lay down next to you, pulling the blanket over the two of you. He put an arm around you and pulled you into him.
You rested your head on his chest and ran your fingers along the grooves of his muscles.
"I think this was a better gift than the bell bottoms." You joked.
Joel laughed and kissed the top of your head.
"I don't know, I did go through a raider camp for those jeans. That was pretty heroic and dangerous."
"Yes, Joel Miller, you are a hero in the name of fashion." You yawned, nestling into him. You could hear the steady beating of his heart and felt his chest rising and falling with his breathing.
You closed your eyes and were starting to drift off when Joel's voice brought you back.
"Hey."
"Yeah?"
"Thank you for comin' over and doing somethin' I was too chicken shit on doing for a long time."
You smiled.
"Don't worry, I'm here to do the things we're both scared to do. You just have to promise to keep the whiskey and the bell bottoms comin'."
"It's a deal." Joel kissed your head again and pulled you in closer.
You drifted off to sleep, content and safe in Joel's arms. Finally feeling the relief and acceptance of what you had tried to ignore for so long.
And the feeling of Joel's arms around you felt more like home than you could ever imagine.

↳ they wonder if they're already losing you slowly. everytime they speak to you, it's like they're trying to compensate for something. begging you to look at them– but not too close,,, just in case you notice how brutally flawed they are, beyond just the quirks you find endearing. maybe one day you'll look too deep into their eyes and you won't like what you see

"i'll show you the way to hurt me"
↳ loving again is the biggest risk anyone who's been hurt like them could take. you make it worth the danger– the possibility of the pain they've grown all too familiar with. maybe for today, caution can be set aside. when it comes to you, they wouldn't mind letting their guard down.
"in search of a soft sound from another planet / in search of a quiet place to lay this to rest."
↳ they have to admit their past has burdened them in ways they can't even begin to communicate. they know you can't fix everything that has been broken in their lives. still, the comfort you provide is never taken for granted. you are their safe space– the soft sound from another planet. their quiet place to finally lay it all to rest. and suddenly, the aching in their chest doesn't eat them up inside as much as it used to.
you make it easy to love again.

"i was made for you / you were made for me"
↳ it's hard to believe that you're more than just a distant fantasy sometimes. they can't deny how much they've yearned for a love like the one you two share. something so sweet, so real. it's nothing like the movies or the fairytales, but is anything ever? even when things are messy and complicated, it's undeniable how perfect it all feels. how everything about the two of you just fits. they're inclined to thank every shooting star they've ever wished on, every birthday candle they've ever held their deepest desires in as they blew the flame out for the day you two met. by any manner of higher power or forces unseen to the human eye, they're certain fate was on their side to give them such a blessing.
"i'll love you 'till you're gone / our song goes on and on"
↳ they're determined to hold on as long as possible. all good things cannot last– but they try not to dwell on that thought. they hold onto the hope that you're the one thing that will stay. your love feels divine. radiant, in the way it overtakes them fully. they almost feel undeserving. so, no matter how small or how grand the action, they try to remind you every day, "i love you"s woven into their every being whenever you're around.

"everything you feel is good / if you would only let you"
↳ sometimes they feel you holding back. they can't help but notice the tension in the room as you suppress the things you want to say, silence the thoughts in your head. they know it's not easy to be earnest all the time. but they love you– they care for you. and all they've ever wanted is for you to be authentic. if it's pure, how could it ever be wrong? maybe in your own time, you'll be able to unravel in front of them. they're by your side every step of the way. to finally have you open up to them– to be real, to be honest– it would mean the world to them. they want to show you they love every single part of you. they love you when you're upset, when you're crying, when you're angry– because it's you.
"so stay with me / hold my hand / there's no need / to be brave"
↳ they offer every reassurance they can give you. you no longer have to fend for yourself. those days of being alone are over. you can crumble apart if you need– there's no need for constant bravery anymore. you did such a good job picking yourself up, time and time again. now, they outstretch a hand to you, a silent way of saying, "let me help you this time."

↳ absolutely smitten with you. it doesn't matter how hard you fell. they. fell. harder. and maybe it's not obvious to you. but they've never had someone who made them care so much. some part of them feels immature for feeling so in love,, like a school kid with a puppy crush. they find it ridiculous, how absolutely lovesick and enamoured they are with everything about you. whatever you feel and express towards them, they feel towards you three times as much. they try everyday to show it.
"the right side of my neck / still smells like you"
↳ you just seem to leave a part of you with them always. they can't ignore it– can't seem to escape your presence, even when you're not physically there. it felt like spiralling to insanity at first. but they've learned to appreciate it– find comfort in it, even. the way the smell of your shampoo lingers on the pillow they leant you when you stayed over, the way that the mug of tea (made just the way you like it) is still on the kitchen table from the morning after– you left your t-shirt once and you had to ask them directly for it back. they like keeping pieces of you near. it reminds them of how loved they are.

"and the road's still long but you come along / and you hold my hand, and you understand"
↳ "when you're ready" has become second place in their favourite three word sentences. they remind you of these words constantly.
"when you're ready" means they don't mind that it's not now. ""when you're ready" means it doesn't matter how long they have to wait for you, they will. when you're ready" is another form of "i love you"

a quiet life sounds nice.
"i'd be better armed if you agreed to take it"

hiiii I have a MASSIVE crush on Toji so could you please write a hurt to comfort fic about him? 🥺
hope this is alright, thank you!
Toji has really been growing on me and I can't tell if it's because of the compression shirt or mitties. Anyways, enjoy!
Word count: 1.3k
SFW/NSFW
Pairing: Toji x Pregnant!Reader
Tumblr media
He never lets you see him hurt.
Even when he’s been sliced up, he still fights your hand away as you try to nurse him. He’s stronger than you even when wounded, and you find yourself having to trick him to glance away so you can dab at the cut. He hisses, smacking your hand away with a loud grunt. You quickly patch him up, bandages sloppily stuck to the cuts. You stumble back up and onto him, his sweat sticking to your skin as you try to slide his shirt up a little more. You’re too far along to deal with his squirming, stomach weighing you down.
“Toji, please-”
“Get off, Woman. I can fix it myself.” His hands are rough against your skin as he sits you beside him and stands, “Stay.”
“I’m not some mutt for you to order around!” You follow him to the bedroom, grabbing his arm but he yanks it away. “We need to talk to each other, if not for our sake then for the baby.”
His piercing gaze softens, and he lets out a weary sigh. Your swollen stomach is a reminder of his shortcomings. He drags his hand down his face, hiding it from you as his eyes water. He’s too old to cry, and it’s not like he has anything to cry about. He got into a fight, a petty fight at a bar where he was wasting the money the two of you were working hard to make. If he told you, you’d be pissed- as you should be. You had lectured him enough about his spending habits, and he was trying, really- he was doing his best.
His best wasn’t enough.
He had realized it when the two of you had gone for a walk the week prior. No matter what you did, you got attention. Men would scramble to try to help you even with him right there, men with deep pockets that he robbed when they were busy nagging you. You lectured him about it but didn’t stop him, too tired to do more than roll your eyes. He had always dreamed of being rich but it seemed like no matter how hard he worked he was never making enough. He wanted a bigger house, with bigger rooms, and a big kitchen for you. He wanted an acre of land for his baby to run around in, and a lake in the backyard to swim in during humid summers.
He shouldn't have left the Zenin clan.
Or maybe he shouldn’t have married you.
“Toji.” Your fingers intertwine with his and he bites his lip, blinking until his eyes are clear. He has to hold it together, for the baby. “Talk to me…”
“Nothin’ to talk about. I’m tired, going to bed-”
“Like hell you are!” Your voice cracks and your hands tangle in his tight Tee. “Why do I have to beg you to communicate?! We’re too old for this, aren’t you tired-”
“I just told you I’m fucking tired! Go nag the birds outside, give a man some peace and quiet!” Here he goes, raising his voice again. Shit, he’s made you cry and he doesn’t know how to stop the tears from falling down to your chin. “Y/N, I didn’t mean it-”
“Fine! If you want silence then you’ll have it!” You flip around and stomp away, pulling on your shoes as quickly as you can. “Dinner’s on the stove, try to make it last a few weeks.”
“Y/N, you aren’t going anywhere and you know that.” He sits you down with a single hand, pulling your shoes right back off. “You’re seven months pregnant.”
“Since when do you care?” You sniffle, backing away when his hand strokes your cheek. “You just wanted me to go and now you’re making me stay. You’re so confusing, I don’t even know why you bother coming back!”
“Y/N-”
“You leave me for days and days and then have the nerve to come back all beat up!” You sob into his shoulder as he pulls you into his arms, they’re strong, firm around you. “A-And you get mad when I worry! I can’t even worry about my husband! You’re awful, horrible!”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” He never apologizes so the word feels foreign on his tongue but he repeats it until he calms down. “I’ll get you what you need, I swear.”
“Don’t you get it?” Your head is down, resting on his chest. “All I need is you.”
“Don’t you want more than this? Better than this?” He’s a fool, he doesn’t need you to tell him that. He wipes away your tears with gentle thumbs, heart swelling when you look up at him with those teary-eyes.
“We have a baby on the way, a house, and food growing in our yard for when the food on ice goes bad. All I want is for my husband to be home with his family.”
Home. It’s another foreign word to him because he hasn’t used it in so long. He never thought of it much, at least that’s never what he called the house you two lived in. He was home when you were curled up in his lap or pressed against his chest, humming that sweet song you wanted the baby to know by heart at birth. His eyes well with tears and he buries his face in your neck, quietly bawling. You rub his back, playing with his dark strands until he’s quieted down. He won’t look up at you, cheeks flushed and puffy eyes squeezed closed. He’s too old to cry like this, how embarrassing.
“I thought…”
“Thought what, Honey?” You cup his face and make him look at you. He’s cute when he’s crying, like a little boy who’s in trouble for fighting. You peck his pout, smiling softly when his face reddens. “You can say how you feel.”
“I thought you would get sick of me by now.” He mumbles, knowing how silly he sounds. Saying it out louds makes shame stir in his stomach, how did he even allow himself to think such things?
“Of course not.” You kiss the scar on his lips, “I love you. That’ll never change.”
“Never? What about when this brat comes out?” That grin is back, and now you know he’s being mischievous. “I doubt you’ll be saying that then.”
“You’re right, I’ll be cursing your name.” You giggle as he holds you in his arms, his hands on your stomach. You lay your hands on his and look up at him, “I think it will be worth it though. Don’t you?”
He’s glad he left the Zenin clan.
“More than worth it.” He kisses your shoulder, then lays his head on it. You’re warm, you smell like the wild flowers outside. Had you been making flower crowns again?
“If you’re done moping, dinner is ready.” You smirk when he perks up, “I’m sure you’re hungry after all of that crying.”
“Who’s been cryin’? I don’t cry.” He jerks his head away, ears burning.
“Yes, yes, you’re very strong.” You muffle your laugh with your palms as he frowns. You slide out of his lap and stand, holding your hand out to him as your other hand rests on your baby bump. “Come on, let’s go eat."
You glowed before pregnancy, now you were radiant. Your hand is small in his and he gently kisses it before letting go. He pulls out your chair and your heart flutters. He hasn’t been this sweet since your wedding day. You’re even more surprised when he sets your plate down and kisses your forehead, waiting for you to start eating before he even makes his plate. Was that really all he needed- a good cry? You spent the rest of dinner thinking about it, but he knew the real answer.
All he needs is you.

You
Life used to be good. Back in the day when you had your friends in the Rebellion, you felt like you had a sense of community; a sense of belonging. But when the Empire was destroyed the need for the Rebellion dissipated. So, you chose to live out your days on the planet Corvus, in the village of Calodan. It’s a stark difference from your old life. Gone were the days of being a rebel spy, acting as an imperial officer while the Empire was constructing the second Death Star. You were someone important, reporting back to the Rebellion with information that was vital to the Rebellion.
And for what? To toss you aside as soon as they stopped needing you? Surely for someone as vital as you were to the Rebellion, they would’ve made sure you were well taken care of, living a relatively comfortable life. But the reality is quite the opposite.
Calodan is rough to say the least, living under Magistrate Morgan Elsbeth’s oppressive rule. She’s walking proof that there are still fledgling pockets of the Empire scattered across the galaxy. This time of peace will surely come to an end. And when that time comes… Wouldn’t the Rebellion call upon one of their most trusted spies?
Maker, that’s awful. You’re wishing for unrest in the galaxy just so you can live an exciting life again. The reality is, you’re wishing for more than just some thrill. You’re wishing for stability, friends, food in your stomach, a sense of community, and belonging. That’s what you’re after.
And it’s all so far out of reach.
-
You’re walking back from the market, your small bag of the little food you could afford slung on your shoulder. You’re always on edge here, even in your own home. It’s only right when Calodan isn’t necessarily the safest place to live. Morgan Elsbeth and her guards have people chained up in electrical cages in the village center on a whim, regardless if they did anything wrong or not. Kriff, if someone looks at a guard the wrong way, it’s straight to the cages. This causes everyone to move through the streets quickly, keeping their heads low and avoiding eye contact with others. It’s for their own safety but you can’t deny it’s also made the village lonely and secluded. You’re not living here; you’re merely surviving, just barely. This isn’t the life you pictured for yourself.
Lost in your own thoughts again you barely notice the presence behind you. Just as you turn your head to look, the figure is gone. All you saw was the edge of a dark cloak, turning a corner and heading down an alley. You don’t linger. You know better. You’ve been able to stay out of trouble ever since you moved here. And you’re certainly not going to start now.
Power walking and extending your strides, you head home, holding your breath and keeping your head low. Once you get home you lock the door behind you and finally breathe. You slump down into a chair at your kitchen table and set your bag of food on the tabletop. That could’ve been nothing. It could’ve been your imagination. Or someone else trying to mind their own business. After all, you weren’t attacked, the person didn’t say anything to you. They were behind you and then gone an instant. You’re just being paranoid again.
That is until you’re emptying your bag and you notice a small piece of paper folded up and resting at the bottom. With shaky hands you grab it and before you unfold it you try to think about what it could say. It can’t be credits that someone is after, you don’t have any. You don’t entangle yourself with the wrong crowd here. You keep to yourself, only leaving your house when it's necessary. But the idea that someone is watching you, taking note of your routines, what route you walk home every day, knowing when to plant the piece of paper in your bag without being noticed… That scares you. It makes you feel like the walls of your house are about to close in on you. It makes you feel like someone is lurking in the shadows, ready to strike when you’re not looking. If they know where you live, they will wait inside your home and strike. They could-
Breathe. Unfold the kriffing paper.
So, you do. And you’re… somewhat relieved?
The note reads;
Come to the edge of the forest at the north side of Calodan at nightfall… alone.
At the bottom of the piece of paper is a hand-drawn symbol of the Rebellion.
Maybe you’re getting that action you wished for. But you’re still hesitant. Anyone could write this note and pretend they’re associated with the Rebellion.
It is tempting, though. You have a blaster hidden deep in your closet. It hasn’t been used since you moved here. Tonight seems like the perfect night to dig it out.
You’re kneeling on the floor, rummaging through your closet. In the back, there’s a wooden box, containing your blaster and other things from your time in the rebellion. You feel it with your hand and slide it towards you, lifting the lid and being flooded with memories. Inside the box is your old imperial disguise, a pin in the shape of the Rebellion symbol, your grappling line, and your blaster. You take the blaster in your hands and rub your thumb under the cool, black metal.
You can do this, you tell yourself.
Rising from the floor, you tuck the blaster and grappling line in the waistband of your pants and set off into the night. The wall on the north side of the village is the least guarded at night. The person who left the note must’ve known that.
You’re swift on your feet, moving quietly and keeping your head in a constant swivel, on the lookout for any witnesses. But everyone is home like they should be. It’s past curfew. If you were to be caught you’d be subjected to the electric cages.
You can do this, you remind yourself.
You reach the north wall and aim your grappling line at the top of the wallet, retracting the line and pulling yourself to the top. Your landing is a little shaky but you still got it. It feels like old times again. You reattach the grappling line to the other side of the wall and slowly lower yourself on the ground. You made it. You did it.
But there’s still this strange person to meet, a stranger who for some reason knows who you are, knows your past. Taking a deep breath, you walk towards the forest, anxiety brewing in your stomach about just who this person could be. The forest is misty and it’s hard to see. You replace the grappling line in your waistband and draw your blaster, on high already for any attackers or one of Morgan Elsbeth’s guards who somehow noticed you leaving the village.
“You made it,” a woman’s voice calls from your right.
You turn and look who it is. You can make out a figure standing in the fog, wearing a dark gray cloak. Her hood is on her head but you can make out blue and white head tails peeking out.
“Do I know you?” you ask.
“No, but I know of you.”
“Oh?”
She removes her head and you're certain it’s Ahsoka Tano. You’ve never met her but you’ve heard stories during your time in the Rebellion. She was never associated with it, laying low and in hiding. So why would she leave a Rebellion symbol on the piece of paper?
“Ahsoka Tano?”
“Seems like you know of me, too.”
“Why are you here? And why did you leave me that note with the symbol?”
“I knew it would get your attention; get you to trust the anonymous sender. It worked, didn’t it?”
“You didn’t answer my question.”
“I need a favor.”
“What kind of favor?”
“For Luke Skywalker.”
Kriff, Luke Skywalker? The Luke Skywalker?! You haven’t seen him in forever. You gotta play it cool, though. You can’t seem too eager.
“What does he want?”
“He doesn’t know about it yet but… I need you to watch over someone very important to him.”
“Well, how can it be important if he doesn’t know about it?”
“He’s building a Jedi academy on Ossus and I rescued a force-sensitive child from the Empire-“
“The Empire is still around?”
“There’s always remnants; sympathizers left in the galaxy.”
“Right.”
“I need you to watch over him until I can take him to Luke. I have to make some repairs on my ship before I can go and it’ll take me some time.”
“That’s all you need me for?”
“I needed someone I could trust. Leia said you’d be the perfect person here.”
Leia. Maybe you need to do this.
“When will you be taking him?”
“Two rotations from now. So you’ll do it?”
“Fine. If it’s to help Luke then why not?”
She smiles and moves her cloak to reveal a pouch hanging over her shoulder, hitting her at her hip. Inside the pouch is a small creature, pastel green with large black eyes. He looks to be of the same species as Yoda, whom you've never met. But you’ve heard stories of him.
“This is Grogu,” she says, taking off the pouch and walking forward to hand it to you. You take it in your hands and wear it on your shoulder, looking down at Grogu who’s peering up at you with questioning eyes.
“She’s a friend, Grogu,” she reassures him.
“How old is he?” you ask.
“About fifty. But for his species that’s still pretty much a baby.”
“So… How do I take care of him?”
“Don’t let him out of your sight. He can find things to get into if you’re not looking. Just make sure he’s fed and he should be pretty good for you.”
“Okay… Am I meeting you back here when you’re going to take him?”
“Mhm. Meet me back here in two rotations, same time.”
“Alright…”
“May the force be with you,” she says, turning and walking deeper into the forest, her cape billowing in the wind.
You sigh and look down at Grogu. He doesn’t say a word but you don’t expect him to, instead, he cocks his head to the side, looking up at you with a blank expression on his face.
“Alright, kid. You’re going to have to be quiet on the way back to my house. Got it?”
He babbles a strange noise that you can only assume is a noise of acknowledgment before you set off back toward the village. You grapple up and over the stone wall as you did when you left, landing softly on your feet and retracting the line. The coast seems to be clear. And just like before you’re light on your sweet, moving like the wind. Once you’re home, you let Grogu out of his pouch and onto your bed. All you know about him is that he’s young and force sensitive so he’s going to need a watchful eye at all times. This is going to be the longest two rotations of your life.
Din
Moff Gideon recruited Din to join his cause several cycles ago, but it wasn’t willingly. He knew Din was special back then. Force-sensitive Mandalorians are hard to come by. But it took some “convincing” to turn him over if you could call it that. Most people would call it torture.
“Please bring me Din Djarin,” Gideon says to one of his officers.
He bows at the command and leaves the cockpit, setting off down the hallway. Gideon has a task for Din, a special one this time. For a while now, Din’s been working as a bounty hunter for Gideon’s small remnant of the Empire. He’ll go after anyone Gideon tells him to, and he normally doesn’t ask questions. But this time, Din needs to know the full scope of who he’s going after. That someone… being you. And also the child. The Empire knows Luke is out there somewhere, building a Jedi Academy. They plan to stop Luke in his tracks and capture any force-sensitive students he may already have, turning them over to the Dark Side as soldiers for the Empire.
The cockpit doors open once again. It’s the same officer as before but this time Din is behind him, stance strong and ready to take on a new mission.
“I have a task for you, Din Djarin,” Moff Gideon says.
“To where?”
“Corvus, more specifically the village Calodan. One of our own, Morgan Elsbeth is the Magistrate. I’ve just received word from her that an ex-Rebel Spy has crossed paths with Ahsoka Tano and has taken the child into her care until they leave for the Jedi Academy. I need to go there to capture the spy and the child. If you talk with Morgan Elsbeth she’ll tell you when to strike.”
“I understand,” Din says with a tip of his helmet and nothing more.
He turns and leaves the cockpit, thinking about his new mission and how he’s going to capture you. If he can, he’d like to sneak up on you when you’re sleeping or walking down a dark alley. You’re an ex-spy. He’ll have to be smart about how he goes about this. But once he captures you and tries to get you to talk? That’s when the fun begins.
-
He leaves the docking bay in his ship, a Razor Crest, punching in the coordinates for Corvus and setting a course. On the way he thinks about how he’ll get you. Sure you’re an ex-spy, but that doesn’t mean anything to him. He’s never missed a bounty and he’s certainly not going to start now. Moff Gideon is confident in him, too. He is sending Din with no backup after all. This is all routine for Din, nothing to lose sleep over.
Din is a force to be reckoned with… literally. There are not many force-sensitive Mandalorians out there. He could’ve chosen to be a Jedi, to follow the Light Side of the force. But the Dark Side was calling to him in a voice louder than the Light Side could ever appeal to him. He’s never felt so much raw power before, tapping into abilities he never knew he was capable of.
But for a fleeting moment when he thinks about the other Mandalorians, the covert he left behind, he feels bad about what he did. The feeling doesn’t last long though. Instead, he feels sorry for them, sorry that they’re weak. If they’re so weak, then maybe… they don’t deserve to live at all.
He grips the gear shift on the Razor Crest a little tighter and makes the jump to lightspeed, hyper-fixated on you and your demise.
You
It’s been two rotations since Ahsoka delivered Grogu to you. You’re due to deliver him back to her tonight and honestly… you couldn’t be more relieved. He’s adorable but he’s also a handful, getting into things when you’re not looking, moving things with his mind, hiding on you, the list of mischief he gets into goes on and on. When you were wishing for more action and excitement in your life, babysitting was not what you pictured.
Part of you wants to ask Ahsoka if you can go with her but the other part of you is embarrassed, worrying that you’ll look desperate seeking out any chance of an adventure.
Alas, all you can do right now is wait until tonight.
Din
Din parks the Crest in the forest before heading to the front gate of Calodan. The guards at the watch tower take notice of him and let him in. They knew he was coming. One of them meets Din down below and escorts him to Morgan Elsbeth. She’s waiting for him on her pathway to her house, surrounded by water and her garden; a beautiful place to discuss something so grim. Her front gates open and Din walks towards her on the path. Her lips curl into a smile when she sees him.
“Welcome,” she says.
“I was sent by Moff Gideon,” he says, standing with his hands hooked on his belt.
“I’ve been expecting you.”
“You say there’s a spy in possession of the child… How are you so sure?”
“I always have at least one of my men patrolling the forest surrounding Calodan. One of them overheard them talking. She’s meeting Ahsoka Tano tonight at the forest on the north side of the village.”
“When?”
“At dusk tonight.”
“Understood. I will capture them then,” he says, turning and walking to leave.
“So confident,” she says in a somewhat hushed tone so he wouldn’t hear.
But he does, stopping in his tracks and turning to look at her one last time.
“I never miss.”
And with that he’s gone, walking back out of the village and into the misty forest. For now, all he can do is wait for you and Ahsoka to meet up and ambush your little meeting.
You
The sun has finally set. You’re placing your blaster and your grappling line in the waistband of your pants again, the same as you did two nights ago. Grogu behaves on your way out of the village, staying quiet as you weave in and out of the dark alleys and hop the wall with the grappling line.
Stepping into the forest you’re on high alert, anxious to hand him off to Ahsoka already. You swear you hear a twig snap somewhere. You turn to look in the direction of the noise to see… nothing. It’s just your imagination. You’re being paranoid.
Pull yourself together. You were a spy for many years in the Rebellion. And now you’re jumping at the snap of a twig?
A figure appears in the mist. You can’t make out who it is, blinking a few times.
“Ahsoka?”
But then a lightsaber is drawn, illuminating the figure and the mist surrounding them. It’s not Ahsoka. It’s… a Mandalorian? He’s wearing pure Beskar armor, vibrant and silver in color, with a black cape billowing in the mist. His stance is strong and menacing, making you feel small and inferior. And the lightsaber he’s wielding is one like you’ve never seen before. It’s black and its blade is one of a traditional sword. It sounds different, too, emitting a higher-pitched sound than that of a normal lightsaber.
Without thinking you draw your blaster, aiming at the Mandalorian and moving Grogu so he’s behind your back. And then, the Mandalorian begins charging at you, running at you with full speed. You shoot at him but it’s no use. Every blast is defected by him. You scramble thinking about what to do next. But Ahsoka’s voice interrupts your thoughts.
“Over here! Throw him to me!” she shouts.
She’s on your right, hands outstretched and ready to catch him. You slide the pouch off your shoulder and toss him over to her. There’s no way he’s going to make it but Ashoka catches him, using the force to carefully pull him towards her.
But before she can take him into her arms the Mandalorian stops and does the same. And now you can’t believe your eyes. He’s pulling Grogu towards him with all of his might. But Ahsoka’s strong, not letting go of him that easily. It’s like a game of tug of war between them with Grogu stuck in the air. If they do this any longer it’ll hurt him. Without thinking you aim your blaster at the Mandalorian, somewhere his Beskar isn’t protecting him, and shoot at the side of his thigh. The Mandalorian yells in pain and lets go of Grogu, sending him flying into Ahsoka’s arms. She takes him and runs, light on her feet as she runs through the trees. The Mandalorian will go after her next if you don’t stop him now. You keep shooting at him now that his attention is on you. But same as before, he deflects every single blast.
Your next instinct is to run, either after Ahsoka or back towards the walls of Calodan, somewhere, anywhere just away from him. You take off running as fast as you can, into the forest and narrowly missing rocks and tree roots. You don't dare look over your shoulder to see if he’s chasing after you.
All of a sudden you feel something around your legs, closing in on you. You look down to see a fiber cord whip, not too dissimilar from your own grappling line, encircling your legs. Within an instant you’re down on the ground, head slammed against a rock. You try to wiggle free but it’s no use, the cord is tightening around you rapidly. The last thing you see is the Mandalorian standing above you, piercing into your soul with the stone-cold glare of his visor before the world around you fades to black.

AiTA for not wanting my friends at my booth anymore?
I (29 F) have been trying to get started as an artist at our local conventions. So I found a few friends willing to booth share so we could split the table cost. I always put the down payment on the table for cons in full.
The first year was really hard. People haven't shown as much interest in my fandom merch as I had thought they would (prints/keychains/etc).
They (25) make bags by hand (non fandom related). They're cute items, but people don't show as much interest in them.
The first year we boothed together they were late to the con, and to when the vendor hall opened, and to when I had set times I needed a break from the booth, and wasn't answering their phone. When they have been on booth duty, they spend all their time on their phone and don't talk to attendees unless people ask them questions.
I had a convo abt how disappointed I was with the lack of communication and them being late months after the con. They said they'd work on it and I tried to make it clear that this was my booth (since it's my money we're gambling with). I didn't mind renting out space on it. I had already promised them they'd have space at the table this year, so I didn't push the issue further, but I made it clear if we were to keep being friends I couldn't be in a position where I relied on them professionally. They said they understood, but we had been drinking when talking abt it.
This year, they were late to set up again. They brought people not involved with the booth to sit with us without asking me. So there was four people and my partner didn't feel comfortable being the fifth even though though my partner was the one that helped with set up the day prior. They were an hr late to dinner plans with us that night with 0 notice for an important phone call (their partner found out abt the DBZ guy dying. That was the importaht call) They didn't show up today until 2 hrs after open today with no notice of what was going on (they're rooming with 2 other people that have my # and were at the booth day 1) supposedly due to a migraine, but I know they drink hard after con closes. They have been there when I needed a break and responded when I asked where they were, they've had matching cosplays with me all con and it's all things I'm into. I can see they genuinely tried compared to last year.
Then my partner thought they heard them complaining about me while I was on lunch break today. (I only got food for my family/SO during the 2 hrs their half of the booth people was MIA. I assumed they were getting their own food in that time. Since yesterday they had food before showing up and didn't want lunch). And I had included them in my paid cosplay shoot without asking for them to chip in.
I spent way more money on the table this year literally the day we drove up to the con (long story, but point is I locked in the space, they weren't involved in getting table space this year) It's turned out better than before against all odds. I broke even day 2 not including their sales.
Then they were talking abt how next year they want more table space to take commissions and bring more stuff and be "more involved" with the table. I don't want that. It's like they don't remember agreeing it was my table at the end of last year.
I'm known for being flat/blunt when I'm upset. And at this point it's gone passed inexpeirience to just not thinking abt this as work.
Last year we agreed they'd give me $50 or what sales they made and this year it looks like they won't sell enough to make it to the $50. If I don't take their cut, I know my SO will be frustrated with me for being a push over and them for not following through on our agreement.
Idk how to firmly establish the boundary that it's my table and I don't want them having any more space/control over it without them saying I'm the asshole. I think it would be shitty to do that after demanding all their sales, but idk when to bring it up. It's also their birthday week this week.
I don't mind renting space, but at this point they don't understand that's what they are doing and I'm kind of done. This is our 2nd year doing this convention together, but my 4th table. My partner's furious with them abt the whole thing. I just want the freedom of making choices with my booth without being disappointed by people who say they care about it, then act like working the booth isn't a job.
AITA? Is there a way to not have them less involved with the booth next year without coming off as an asshole?
What are these acronyms?

Trust Fall (Revali X Reader) - Part 1
Word Count: 2,780
Pairing: Revali X Reader (Female)
Fandom/Universe: Legend of Zelda (Breath of The Wild)
Themes/Content: Romance (Slow Burn), Fantasy, Action.
Warnings: None
Synopsis: You visit your friend in Rito Village in order to escape the sense of dread looming over your home of Castle Town as the prophesied doomsday slowly grows closer. It is here on your visit that you meet a Rito warrior who turns your world upside-down.
Authors Note: Finally got round to writing this! Since he's not mentioned in TOTK at all I just had to start a fanfic for him. I miss him so much. I'm uploading this from my laptop so if the formate is weird or there needs to be more paragraphs just let me know! I don't consider myself a pro on Zelda lore so I do apologise for any mistakes. Also, this fan fiction will have two endings! (One canon to BOTW and one canon to Hyrule Warriors) Other than that, I hope you enjoy! - I don't know what to call myself... should I go by my username? What about something stupid like Loafus?... I don't know... I'll work on it 🪶🤎
Rito Village was your second home. You felt so much comfort and associated the place with such a feeling of warmth, it was surprising you hadn't made it your permanent residence. When it came to Rito Village you only had positive memories.
This was mostly due to your best friend, Frita, being a rito. The two of you had met at a very young age and had been best friends ever since, visiting each other every couple of weeks or whenever you had spare time. She would teach you about the ways of the rito and you in turn would teach her about hylians. Frita truly was like a sister to you, and you loved her more than words could say.
"Daydreaming again?", her voice broke you from your thoughts, her bright blue eyes sparkling with joy. You blinked a few times, finally registering her words, and you couldn't help but giggle to yourself. "Yes, I guess I was". "What we're you daydreaming about?", she asked, turning her attention back to the salmon sizzling in the village's communal cooking pot, the aroma swirling through the air, making your mouth water in anticipation. Later in the night was the perfect time for cooking here as most ritos had gone to sleep; Their poor night vision meant that many would retire early in the evening. "Just thinking about flying", you confess sheepishly and Frita rolled her eyes playfully, responding with, "You're always thinking about flying". "I can't help it whenever I'm here. You all look so majestic and free", you gushed. "I would love to be able to experience what it's like to fly for myself instead of having to be on your back". "Perhaps if you pray to Hylia enough she'll allow you to become one of us", she chuckled and you couldn't help but laugh along with her. Frita eventually added the tebantha wheat to the pot and the goat butter as the two of you talked about everything under the stars. "Are you still planning on moving to Hateno Village?", she asked as she began to plate up your dinners. "Yes, unfortunately. It means I'll  be further away from you", you mumbled and Frita's face fell in disappointment. "It's the best option as, if this impending doom really is to show itself one day, the city centre is most likely one of the first places to be attacked. If I could, I'd love to live here with you". "Well, why don't you?". You shook your head. "You know I'd stick out like a sore thumb here. I wouldn't be able to pull my weight or help the village in any way. I'd be more of a burden than anything". "Perhaps not! If I could find a way for you to easily integrate into life here, would you move here?". The more Frita spoke, the more you felt a warmth spread through your entire being. "You'd have me, you'd be well protected- our warriors are exceptional, there's plenty of food and resources in the area… just don't make any final decisions to move just yet. Allow me a chance". You chuckled, taken aback by your friends willingness to help you and keep you by her side. "Okay, I'll give you a chance".
You cut yourself short when you noticed movement out of your peripheral vision. The gentle padding of talloned footsteps grew closer and bright emerald green eyes encased in bright red watched from the darkness. Finally a rito came into view. "Rather late to be cooking, don't you think?". His tone was sharp and precise, you couldn't tell if he was making small talk or if he was irritated with the fact that the two of you were occupying the cook pot. Did he usually use it at this time? "Oh! Revali! Sorry, did you want to use the cooking pot", Frita asked, a light quality to her voice as she politely addressed him, yet an awkward silence seemed to settle over the three of you as his eyes travelled from her to settle on you, staring down his beak right into your very soul. "Who is this hylian?", he asked bluntly. "This is my best friend. She's visiting for a short while", she informed him of your name and that you were from Castle Town. "Would you care to join us?", you then offered, cutting through the awkward pause in conversation. "We have plenty to go around". Frita cut you a glance, surprised by your sudden offer, but did not protest, adding "Yes, do join us! I'm assuming you've just finished practice? You must be famished". Revali opened his beak but quickly shut it, perhaps to reject the offer but thought better of it. He took a moment to smooth out the cream scarf around his neck. "Well, if you insist, I suppose I could join you", he hummed, making his way to sit across from you.
As he took his seat, he placed a beautifully crafted bow to his side, coated in vibrant colours and intricate designs, a scrap of teal fabric tied to one end. He held himself with pride, sitting tall, spine straight, shoulders squared. With the fact that he was taller than you, it was a little intimidating. "Have you visited our village before?", he asked, and it took you a second to realise his question was directed towards you. "Oh yes, plenty of times. I've been visiting since I was a child. That's how I met Frita", you explained, gesturing to your friend as dinner was being dished onto plates chiselled from stone. "Hmm, surely I would have met you by now if that were the case", he muttered as he was handed his food, "it's interesting how our paths have never crossed". You shrugged unsure of what else to say, other than, "Perhaps we weren't meant to meet yet. Us meeting now may be fate?", you laughed lightly, amused by the thought. Revali scoffed in response, "I believe we are in control of our own fate. For example; I didn't become one of the greatest rito warriors through fate and sheer dumb luck alone". "And so modest about it too", you joked which caused Frita to just about choke on her food. She tried to excuse herself as calmly as possible, covering her beak with her wing while still coughing her lungs up. Judging by her reaction, you considered how you may have overstepped a boundary. Not everyone knew when you were joking upon first meeting you. You often sounded more serious than you intended. "I'm only teasing", you clarified, playing with your food on the end of your fork absentmindedly. "I'm sure you're  more than deserving of the title", you tried for your most sincere smile you could conjure, yet Revali didn't seem convince.
Finally, Frita had caught her breath, tears in the corners of her eyes. "No no, Revali really is the greatest of our warriors. Our people gave him that title", she croaked, her throat sounding raw from coughing. "He's the pride of the rito", she insisted, dropping her voice to a more serious tone. Your face contorted in amused disbelief before you began to wrack your brain for any information that would help you deduct the truth. "So he is the rito that's won the annual archery competition for the past five years? He's that same-…", you began to trail off, recalling the conversation you had with your father.
You came from a wealthy family, both your parents working for the King and late Queen of Hyrule . Your mother was the royal gerudo correspondent and your father was the royal rito correspondent- this being the reason you spent so much time in Rito Village growing up, as well as Gerudo Town. You remembered the past few years you couldn't make the annual archery competition held in the village, since you were either accompanying your mother on business trips or doing your own work, but you father had come home stating how the rito 'Revali' had won again. He would then follow up by talking about his superb skills and how his talent for aerial combat were superior in comparison to his peers. Your father claimed that the rito was unmatched and unrivalled, as well as claiming that he may very soon be known as one of- if not the most skilled warrior in all of Hyrule. (Which was very high praise coming from your father, since he was rarely impressed by anyone).
It was like a shock wave was sent through your body. "In the name of Hylia! I didn't realise it was you! I am so sorry! Please forgive my rudeness", you blubbered, putting your half eaten dinner aside, stumbling over your words as you rushed out your apology. "So you have heard of me", he lulled before an amused smirk graced his features. "I suppose I can forgive you since your rudeness was more disbelief than pure ignorance". "Thank you”, you breathed a sigh of relief. “I have heard a lot about your skills and I-… well…", once again you had trailed off. You looked to Frita for reassurance, yet she seemed as nervous as you; her posture was stiff as she sat with a straight spine, her eyes glancing between you and the navy rito. "From what I've heard, you're an incredibly skilled archer", you approached the conversation cautiously, hoping this angle would amend any bitterness you may have caused. Revali looked a you and you felt your breath catch in your throat as you locked eyes before he let out a gruff chuckle. "I suppose you could say that".
You and Frita ate in a comfortable silence while listening to Revali drawl on about the countless competitions he's won along with his many talents regarding aerial combat. Before long, your mind began to wonder.
You couldn't help but think of home. How it was slowly being consumed by a festering anxiety. There was a heavy air across the whole of Castle Town as you all prepared for this prophesied impending doom. The army had began vigorously training since last month. Some of those warriors were your friends- people you had grown up with. It was terrifying to think how some of them you may never see again once the Calamity strikes. Some were beginning to research the ancient technology that had recently been unearthed to see if they could be used to defend Hyrule. These were called guardians, and then there were also the recently uncovered Divine Beasts. At times, it was all a bit much, being at the central hub of Hyrule where there is no escape from the looming sense of dread. Things were moving so quickly and it seemed as though you may never escape the ever present anxiety that hung in the air of Castle Town. But here, in Rito Village, people seemed more relaxed. Many ritos believed that their home would not be effected by the foreseen Calamity. This made the village a nice escape from daily life back home. Here, you weren't reminded of what was to come. You weren't reminded of your duties. You could just breathe easier here in the village nestled into the rocky pillar.
"I do love it here. Rito Village is such a beautiful place. I don't have a single bad memory while being here", you gushed, earning a raised brow from Revali at your comments about his home, his interest now piqued. "Is that so?". Before you could stop her, Frita spewed, "Yes, in fact, she might move here". You shot her a look, a signal to keep that information between the two of you, to which she sheepishly dipped her head in response. You didn't want others knowing of your plans to move just yet, especially since you hadn't even mentioned it to your parents. "A hylian living amongst ritos?", Revali questioned, an amused undertone laced within his words as his luminous eyes narrowed a fraction, as if trying to read your expressions for some sign of the truth. "Hylians aren't equipped for living here. You would struggle". "Yet so many visit and get by just fine", you bit back, sharp tongued yet it was all said with a simple smile across your lips. What he said was true, yet you disliked how he assumed you would struggle when Frita, a fellow rito, believed you could easily adapt to life in the village. "Visiting and residing are very different though", he then shot back, cocking his head to the side as he examined you and your heart began to pound slightly. You felt a pout develop on your features, brows furrowed. He made a point you couldn't argue against. It was the truth. "Well, I'm taking it upon myself to help her integrate into the village before she permanently moves here", Frita chipped in, sensing some tension settling in the air. "If you truly want to move here", Revali began, capturing your attention once more. He wore a smug smirk before he finished, "You'll have to prove yourself".
"Prove myself?", you parroted. "Yes. You'll have to learn our ways and prove to us that you belong here". Revali studied you for a moment, as if he hadn't been doing so all night already. "Firstly, the women of our village are know for being beautiful singers and us men are talented archers. Tell me, can you sing?".
Being from one of the wealthier families of Hyrule Kingdom, you did have the privilege of music lessons from a young age. Your parents wanted the best for you, so consequentially, you had many lessons in a multitude of subjects and areas; Geography, horse riding, music, dance, literature, cooking, etiquette, biology and more.
"I have had many singing lessons", you informed the feathered man matter-of-factly. "It's more a matter of personal taste weather you believe I sound good". "Perhaps you could sing for me tomorrow then. After my training, well meet at the flight range. You can showcase your voice there", he challenged, the smirk across his features growing as he stared down his beak at you. "After all, it would be rather nice to have something to help me relax after such strenuous training", he teased. "And if my voice is to your liking, what do I receive then?". There was a slight pause. "What do you mean?", he tilted his head slightly, perplexed by your response. "Well, if my voice is to your liking then that would mean I have somewhat proven myself worthy of living here amongst your kind", you began, Revali's attention honed in on you, "Which I believe would be worth a reward". "Your reward would be living amongst us", you ignored his comment, pressing on. "That being said, if I prove myself, then I would like to learn archery". "What good would that do you?", he asked. "It's always good for a woman to be able to defend herself, wouldn't you agree?". "But if you were living in Rito Village you wouldn't need to defend yourself", he argued. "I'd have to say it's always good for a woman to know how to use a bow", Frita affirmed your point, edging a little closer to you as she joined the conversation. "Especially a hylian. They are smaller than most races, so it's most likely that any threat they face will be larger than them and could over power them", Frita continued, delving more into her argument. "Exactly, Frita! Meaning wouldn't it be beneficial to have a long range weapon in that instance? Surely, with your knowledge on combat as one of the greatest warriors of our time, you'd agree, Revali". You couldn't help but notice how the feathers around his chest plate plumed in reaction to your words. You'd noticed many ritos would unintentionally do this when feeling prideful, being boastful or being frustrated or angry. Perhaps it was a subconscious way of asserting dominance? Like how a Hylian may square their shoulders to appear larger and more confident in front of others. "It would be an honour to have you teach me".
There was a pause.
"I suppose it would be beneficial for you to have the most skilled archer teach you…", he mused looking off into the night, as if he barely acknowledged your being , like you were nothing more than a speck on his radar.  A nuisance. "Alright, you have yourself a deal; continuously show your willingness and progression to integrate into our society, and in turn I will teach you how to use a bow". "And you swear not to go back on your word?", you quirked a brow in Revali's direction. "I swear".

Here is the masterpost for round one of the zaynsalbumsficfest. We are happy to announce that we will be back later this year with round 2!
Thank you to all the wonderful writers who have joined our fest, we are so happy that so many of you were able to celebrate Zayn's music with us!
Fics and summaries under the cut.
⋆ and right from the start by @so-why-let-your-voice-be-tamed
It all started when Zayn ran into Aiden again.
Aiden. Liam hadn’t thought about him in years, if he’s honest. They’d been in highschool together, but that was ages ago, and they’d lost touch, as people do when you go to uni. Last thing Liam heard was that he’d gone off to London to study at ICMP. Liam and Zayn had stayed up North, going to Manchester together.
They’d done everything together, from the moment their mums had introduced them to one another. Liam had been the new neighbour, moving up from Wolverhampton, and Zayn had been all of three years old when he’d declared Liam his best friend. Liam had looked into those hazel eyes, framed by impossibly long eyelashes even then, and felt like he’d come home.
Even now, in their twenties, they still do everything together. They’d finished their degrees at the same time – Zayn the responsible one, making Liam study even when he didn’t feel like it – and had moved down to London together, finding a flat and jobs and building up a social circle that consisted of both Zayn and Liam’s friends.
It’s nice. It’s comfortable. And somehow Liam hadn’t expected it to end.
⋆ for the rest of my life (for the rest of yours) by @voulezloux
zayn and louis are exes. they still sleep together.
⋆ catching eyes across the room by @beardyboyzx
Zayn is nineteen when he gets his gift.
People say that when you get your gift, you can hear the Magic’s voice whisper what it will be to you the morning of your birthday: Zayn has always wondered what Magic sounded like — but most importantly: what will It say to him?
⋆ sipping pink lucozade by @zaynmaliksmiddlefinger
If Zayn had to describe his life for the past few years, “struggling musician” would be a massive understatement. The last thing he needs right now is a distraction from his last shot at a successful career.
Enter the most tempting distraction he could imagine in the form of Liam Payne, the irresistible—and deeply closeted—playboy and son of the owner of Zayn's label.
Liam Payne is used to getting everything he wants with a tap of his black card—but he isn’t used to wanting something money can’t buy.
Let alone something he shouldn't desire to begin with.
Both men know they shouldn't risk everything by giving in to temptation, but it just might be too late.
⋆ love me tonight by @1ds5directions
When they meet for the first time, Zayn is on set of a new music video for singer Liam Payne. Louis didn't tell him about the cross he did at the intimicy work agreement when filling out the papers for Zayn. So a (surprise) scene of clothed grinding turns into two orgasms later in Liam's changing room. The second time they meet is a coincidence but the third and fourth time are not.
⋆ my sleep was stolen, I'm searching for thieves by @yeahexactlyimnotreal
A lack of sleep leads to a chance of reconnection, with a whole lot of history written in dreams.
or
A series of hopes, dreams, and memories of Zayn as he rediscovers the most important people in his life.
⋆ like a sour diesel, she burns by @larry-hiatus
He’s just an exotic dancer—one whom Zayn enjoys more than the other girls at the club; one with whom he happens to share a complicated past; one who lets him blur the lines between what’s right and what’s wrong. All of that may be true, but Harry is still just a stripper to Zayn, and nothing more. Really.

It had been a normal day, just like any other. He’d been doing a PR tour for his father’s election campaign, making appearances in marginalized communities to let them know that his father saw them, would work for them if elected. He’d always maintained that his father would make a bigger impact by showing up himself, proving that he meant to keep his promises and was not just sending his son to give lip service. Liam’s advice had fallen on deaf ears, but then it’s not like Liam had listened to his father’s advice either.
Liam still remembers the argument, still remembers the feelings of stubborn exasperation and eventual grudging acceptance, when his father had insisted that Liam needed a security detail while out doing his father’s bidding. He remembers arguing that he had no real power over anything, so no one would care about him, let alone try to hurt him. But that assessment had proven to be untrue today.

“Yeah, but that wouldn’t stop us from dating, I’m way too irresistible for that,” Louis grinned, groaning when one of their throw pillows hit him in the face. “Knobhead.”
“Wanker,” Zayn retorted, sticking his tongue out at Louis. Louis stuck his out in retaliation, gently kicking at Zayn until the man grabbed his feet and held them still. They stayed there in silence for a while, Zayn reaching for the remote to turn the TV on as Louis focused on a weird patch of colour on their ceiling.
“Do you ever think that maybe we should date?” Louis asked, gaze staying firmly on the patch of colour even as Zayn turned to look at him.

It had started with an Instagram message this time.
Actually, it’d started with a comment, a simple ‘this sounds big already’ with clapping hands, one that Zayn had found easy to reply to with a casual ‘@liampayne appreciate it bro, thanks for the love’ and adding his own emoji. He’d sat and stared at his phone, watched as fans seemed to suddenly appear to like Zayn’s comment and show their excitement in capitals. He’d sat forward on his couch, leg bouncing as he’d chewed on his fingernail and waited for the message or call that was sure to come.
He’d been the one to reach out last time, after all.
It’d only taken Liam five minutes to send through a DM, something that surprised Zayn - he couldn’t remember ever speaking to Liam this way before.

Not Alone :: JJK
Pairing: Jungkook x Fem!Reader
Word Count: 4.4k (It was like I couldn't stop🙃)
Genre: Fluffy Fluff/Comfort/ very slight Angst, like you have to squint to see it
Warning: Self-doubt, allusions to depression and depictions of lack of self-care, cursing (ass, damn), lack of communication. Crying. If I missed anything, as always, please tell me so I can fix it.
A/N: If you're ever feeling alone, or depressed, or anything similar, please know that there is always someone there for you. I know that sometimes, it might not feel like there is, and that when you feel alone, your mind tells you all sorts of things, but you are never alone, and sometimes, our minds lie to us because we're hurting and it's the only thing that makes us feel more, even if it's more pain. You are always loved more that you think you are. There is always someone who would rather listen to you break down and tell them what is wrong, then to ever be without you. I love you, and if you need someone, come here and talk to me and I will listen, to whatever you want to tell me. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
I hope you enjoy!

Being in a relationship was still new to you, especially one where you found yourself still second guessing a lot of the things that other people probably wouldn’t even blink at.
You’d been with Jungkook for almost 5 months now, and you guys had been friends for about a year before hand, so you had an inkling of how things would be between you both. What you hadn’t expected though, was Jungkook practically dropping off the face of the earth one night- to the point that even the guys hadn’t heard from him in a couple of days and had called you to find out what was going on.
You shook your head, knowing the man on the other end of the line couldn’t see you, as you sighed softly, “I’m sorry, Namjoon, I haven’t talked to him either. Not since Saturday night.”
He made a surprised noise, “You guys haven’t talked in 4 days? Like at all? Did you guys break up or something?”
Your eyes widened slightly, “What? No, of course not. At- at least, I don’t think we did. We didn’t have a fight or anything.”
“What happened on Saturday?” He asked.
You leaned back into your couch as you thought back to the last time you’d seen Jungkook. You’d gone over to his place for dinner after you got off of work, he’d told you that he missed you and just wanted to spend some time with you, and of course, you weren’t going to deny him that- not when you had been thinking the same thing.
Dinner was great, he’d cooked and you guys had a couple drinks, watched a few movies and then when you begrudgingly told him that you needed to go home, he’d called you car since he’d picked you up from work. He was reluctant to let you go, but he knew that you had work in the morning, so, he waited downstairs with you, pulling you into a sweet kiss before you climbed into the car, and he waited until it pulled away, before he went back inside.
“He picked me up from work and made me dinner.” You told Namjoon, frowning slightly, “He didn’t seem like anything was wrong, other than him not wanting me to leave that night.” You commented softly.
Namjoon sighed on the other end of the line, “Okay. If you get ahold of him, please, let one of us know. And we’ll let you know, if we get ahold of him.”
You nodded to yourself, “Yeah, okay. I’ll try to call him as soon as we’re off the phone.”
“Okay. Thank you, Y/n. Bye.”
“Anytime, Joon. Bye.” You sighed again as you dropped your phone to your lap.
You’d been slowly growing more worried, the more days passed without so much as a word from Jungkook, but you figured that he was just really busy with something and that he’d tell you about it when he could. This wouldn’t be the first time something like that was the reason he hadn’t talked to you for a day or two.
But 4 days? And with the added fact that you guys were dating now, it didn’t sit right with you.
You’d texted him a handful of times over the last few days- good morning texts, things that reminded you of him that you wanted to show him, good night texts- the most recent one had been right before Namjoon had called you, you texted Jungkook and just asked if he was okay.
But it still went unread when you looked before you quickly called his phone. When you got his voicemail, you sighed before you waited for the beep.
“Hi, Kookie, I’m getting worried, love. Are you okay? If you need anything, please tell me. The guys are worried about you, too.” You paused for only a second, “Please talk to me, tell me you’re alright.”
After you hung up, dropping your phone back onto the table in front of you, you quickly made the decision that you were going to just go over to his place and check on him. Namjoon had told you when he first called you, that Jungkook hadn’t been to the company since Monday, and that was enough information for you to know that he was home because they’d know if he had left the city.
You moved around your apartment quickly, snagging the hoodie you’d stolen from Jungkook’s closet on Saturday and throwing it on over a long sleeve shirt, you’d changed out of a pair of shorts you only wore at home, and into a pair of sweatpants. When you’d gotten back into the living room, you noticed your phone had just lit up, Jungkook’s personalize text tone ringing out before the screen went black again.
You about dove for your phone, unlocking it as you dropped onto the couch.
Kookie Monster 🍪 [4:54 p.m.] I don’t need anything.
You frowned at the words, not knowing how to respond at first. You thought about calling him again but decided against it, you were still going to go over to his place so you could talk to him face to face, and really know what was going on.
So you locked your phone and as soon as your shoes were on, you were out the door and calling for a car to his place.
The drive felt longer than usual, and you chalked it up to your nerves, but you’d taken a couple minutes and texted Namjoon and told him you were just going to go check on Jungkook instead of waiting around for him to answer someone- also waiting to tell him that Jungkook had answered you. You wanted to make sure you could give the guys answers finally, and get some answers for yourself, too.
After paying for the ride, and thanking the driver, you headed inside, politely greeting the people in the lobby as you moved towards the elevator. You didn’t know why you were so nervous all of a sudden, but as you leaned against the rail as you took the elevator up, you couldn’t shake the sinking feeling that had settled in the pit of your stomach.
“Did you guys break up or something?”
Namjoon’s words had been swirling around in your mind since he’d said them. Truthfully, you were scared that Jungkook had decided that he didn’t want to be with you anymore finally, and that him having not talked to you since you left last weekend, was his way of breaking things off.
You remembered when Jungkook had asked you out the first time. You’d gotten upset with him because you thought it was a joke and you’d left the company that day in tears- unknowingly leaving a rather bewildered Jungkook, rooted in the same spot as you stormed away.
When he showed up at your apartment that night- morning- at almost 1 am, and told you that he hadn’t been trying to play a joke on you, that he really meant it and that he wanted to take you to dinner and give you flowers and actually date you, you’d cry some more and apologized profusely that you had even thought he’d ever do that to someone in the first place.
You’d slowly been waiting for the day that he decided he didn’t want you anymore though, and it was through no fault of his. You just couldn’t seem to believe that someone would want you, the way Jungkook acted like he does.
Did. You thought as you stood in front of his apartment door. You had to remind yourself that he hadn’t talked to you in days. How can you say you want someone, when you don’t even acknowledge their existence?
You took a deep breath and raised your hand to knock on the door. The material felt hard against your knuckles as the sound echoed slightly around you, and you waited with bated breath, to hear anything from inside the apartment.
After a long, few seconds with nothing, you raised your hand to knock again, but right before your skin made contact with the door, it swung open, revealing the man who looked everything like your boyfriend, and yet nothing like him at all.
He had dark circles under his eyes, his hair was the messiest you’d ever seen it- and you’d worked out with him before- his clothes were the same ones he’d been wearing on Saturday. The only difference now was that they were wrinkled to high heaven and disheveled more than you’d ever seen on him.
Jungkook was many things, many wonderful things, but the man in front of you, staring down at you with exhausted, bloodshot eyes, didn’t look anything like the man you knew. This man looked like he hadn’t slept in days, but yet, also looked like somehow all he did was sleep.
Existing somewhere in limbo even as he stood there, chest heaving slowly as he looked down at you with dim eyes.
“What are you doing here?” His voice was rough, like he hadn’t spoken in a while, and it was harsh- harsher than he meant it to sound when he noticed you flinch slightly at the tone.
“I was worried about you.” You whispered, looking him over again. “You haven’t talked to anybody in days, you haven’t been to the company in days, either. Namjoon called me wanting to know what was going on, but I’m just as worried as they are, because I don’t know any more than they do.”
He couldn’t even meet your eyes, stepping aside enough for you to come inside and discard your shoes. He closed the door behind you, once you were far enough, before he ambled back through his dark apartment and into the living room.
“I’m fine.” He told you, stopping before he even got to the couch, “You didn’t have to come over. I told you I didn’t need anything.”
You slowly scanned the apartment as you followed behind him. You noticed things sitting on the kitchen counters than had been there the other night, now mixing with new things that had also been left out, left lying around and forgotten about or ignored. There were dishes everywhere, food wrappers and containers from takeout places littering every surface.
And in the middle of all of it, was Jungkook, looking down at you with a heartbreaking expression that countered his words, when you finally met his eyes again. He wore his heart on his sleeve, his eyes never really able to hide the emotion behind them, and right now, he was pleading silently for something, anything but what his mind was telling him you were going to say.
Even in the darkness of the apartment, you could see his eyes beginning to shimmer with unshed tears, you could see the tremble of his bottom lip even as he pulled it between his teeth, chew the skin raw as you stared back at him with soft eyes, your heart breaking in your chest at just how small and fragile the man in front of you truly looked.
“Baby, what’s going on?” You asked softly, slowly moving to sit beside him on the couch.
He looked away again, more shame filling his body with every second that passed that you continued to look at him as he sat silent.
“Jungkook, please.” You pleaded with him, “Talk to me.”
You gently took his hand in yours, his skin warm to the touch like always- you loved how he ran warmer than you did, you loved how comforting it felt when you two cuddled.
“What do you want me to say, Y/n?” He asked finally, his voice a rough whisper as you linked your fingers together.
“Whatever you want to tell me, love. I’ll listen to anything.” You assured him. Slowly you reached up, cupping his jaw and turning his head so you could actually look at him, and you gently swiped a falling tear from his cheek when he let you. “Where did you go, hmm?” You asked softly, noticing the far off look in his eyes as they roamed your face. “What’s going on in your head, baby?”
Another tear fell, then another, and then all at once, his shoulders dropped and you were pulling him into your chest and wrapping your arms around his body as tightly as you could, hoping that you could piece him back together if he asked you to.
“I’m sorry,” He cried, his face buried in your shoulder as his grip tightened on your body. “I’m so sorry.”
You shushed him gently, running your hand over his hair in a small attempt to tame it as you repeatedly told him it was okay.
“You have nothing to be sorry for, love, nothing at all. Okay?” You muttered, “Whatever is going on, isn’t anything you can’t get through.”
“How-“ He sucked in a breath, “How do you know?” he questioned, no malice in the words as he struggled to even get them out.
You smiled softly, picking his head up to look at him, “Because I know you, and I know that you’re going to get through it. I’ll help you, okay?”
He nodded before you pressed your lips to his forehead, and after taking another shaky, and uneven breath, he told you everything- everything that he’d been feeling for longer than it felt like he’d been feeling it, and with each thing he told you, your mind already had a counter argument to it. No matter what it was, or how much it broke your heart to hear him say it.
Finally, when he went quiet, the only sound being his staggered breathing, you carefully sat you both up and moved to get off the couch.
He panicked, his eyes widening as he gripped your hand in his, “Where are you going?”
You cupped his jaw and smiled, “Just to get a blanket for us, okay? Don’t worry, I’ll be right back.” You waited until he’d dropped your hand to walk down the hallway towards his spare room where he kept all his extra bedding and things.
You searched for a few minutes, moving from the spare room and into his bedroom before your eyes landed on the blanket that you had deemed the best one that he owned- it was dark grey, big enough to cover his whole king sized bed and it was the fluffiest and softest blanket you’d ever held in your life.
You loved it, even when you guys were still friends, always stealing it when you’d come over if the apartment was even slightly chilly, and every time Jungkook saw you wrapped up underneath of it, his heart would flutter at how cute you were, and how utterly fallen he was for you and everything you did.
He’d even started calling it your blanket, because you used it more than he did- until you started dating, and he started leaving it out in the living room even if you weren’t over, because it smelled more and more like you after every use, and he found comfort in the way that you were around, even if you physically weren’t.
You gathered the material in your arms, and made your way back out to the living room, smiling at Jungkook when you realized he’d been staring down the hall at you the second you stepped out of his room with the blanket.
“So I had an idea,” You started softly, standing in front of him, the giant blanket spilling from your arms, “How about we sit here, cuddled up nice and cozy, while I tell you a few things?”
His shoulders moved up and down as he took a deep breath, glancing up at you with curious eyes, “What things?”
“Things I think you need to hear.” Was all you offered up, as you sat back down next to him. “Yes or no?”
He watched you flatten the blanket out a little bit before you opened your arms to him, and nodded, colliding into you once again as you wrapped your arms around him.
Once you both were settling, comfortable in each other’s arms, laying across the whole couch, you took a deep breath as you slowly weaved your fingers through his hair.
“I’ve learned a lot of things about you since we met, but my favorite things I’ve learned, have been since we started dating.” You spoke softly, watching him tilt his head up enough to look at you as you talked.
“I always thought you were an incredible person; generous to a fault, love making people laugh and happy. You love helping other people, doesn’t matter with what, or how. You’re strong, both mentally and physically, you’re sweet and kind and you are genuinely such a good person. You put your heart into everything you do, even if it’s just picking me a cup of coffee before you surprise me at work.” You let out a soft laugh, “And with all of those things, you make it easy for people to love you.” You took a quiet breath, running your finger along his jaw softly as you smiled at him.
“You make it so easy to love you, you know? It’s like breathing. Whenever I look at you, things seem brighter and clearer, and when you hold me, my whole body feels warm- like I’m sitting on a blanket in the park, underneath the sun.”
You watched his eyes flicker back and forth between yours and continued, “You take up a part of my heart that I didn’t even know was empty before you, and it was like it always belonged to you. To see you hurting so badly, and alone, and not even knowing that you were drowning,” You frowned softly, your eyebrows pinched together as you held his chin in your hand, “God, that breaks my heart, baby. I’m sorry you’ve been feeling like you had to deal with this alone.”
His eyes began to tear up, and he sat up enough to lean over you, grabbing the side of your face as he took a deep breath, “I didn’t know how to tell you.” He admitted softly, the waver in his voice catching himself off guard, “It’s always been easier to just go it alone.”
“But you don’t have to, Kookie.” You shook your head, looking up at him, “Let me help you, please? Let me take care of you when you feel like you can’t do it. Let me help you through this.”
He just stared down at you for a moment, before a small, sickly sweet grin found its way to his lips. He gently rubbed his thumb along your cheek, “You said it’s easy to love me.” He mumbled, “You love me?”
You felt your cheeks flush, as you realized you had indeed said that, and meant it of course. Leave it to you to be the one who says it first. You nodded just a little, watching his smile widen, his tears long forgotten by now as he peered down at you.
He took a breath, releasing it through his nose, “I love you, too.” He whispered, leaning down towards you just enough to brush his lips against yours.
“Y-you do?” You stuttered, watching him pull back to look at you fully. Confusion written in his eyes at how much surprise was in your question.
“Why are you surprised?” He asked, tilting his head to the side. “Were you expecting me to not fall in love with you? With everything you do for me?” he questioned.
You chewed on the inside of your cheek, watching as realization flashed in his eyes when you just continued to stare up at him.
This isn’t supposed to be about me. It’s about him, he’s the one upset. Fix it! You yelled at yourself, as he sat up both up, much like you’d done earlier.
“Baby?” He said softly, taking your hand in his, “Did you really think I wouldn’t love you?”
You couldn’t look at him, feeling guilty for letting your brain push those thoughts at you constantly.
He grabbed your face, making you look at him, “Hey, if I’m not allowed to listen to the horrible thoughts in my head, why do you get to, huh?” He shook his head, “No. You have no idea how much I love you, how long I’ve been dying to tell you that, but I always held back because I was worried it would scare you away if I said it too soon.”
Your eyes roamed his face for a moment, watching his tongue peak out to wet his lips before he smiled gently at you again, “If you think I’m all those things to you, you’re in for another thing, because god, baby, you’re everything to me. You are the sun that warms me. You are the stars that light up my loneliest nights. You’re everything I’ve thought love could be and you make me want to be better.”
Your bottom lip was quivering, as he took your hands in his, “You make it easier when I feel like this,” He gestured around the living room, “When things are so overwhelming to me, and getting out of bed is the only thing I do that day, you make it easier. Even if you’re not here.” He scoffed softly, gently pulling you closer to him, “Do you have any idea how many times you’ve saved me, just by being in my life?”
You shook your head, worrying your bottom lip between your teeth to hold back the sob that wanted to make itself known.
He grinned, leaning close enough to put his forehead against yours, “You might as well be my guardian angel, baby. Loving you is the easiest, and best, decision of my life. You help me more than you know, even when you do nothing because you’re you and you’re in my life and you’re my girlfriend, and by far, the best damn thing to happen to me.”
He paused, letting you take a moment to fully absorb his words, as he cupped your cheek, “I love you, Y/n.”
You closed your eyes and pressed your forehead to his again, “No one’s ever made me feel the way you do,” You admitted, “Or said I was the best thing to happen to them.”
He chuckled lowly, his hand coming up to the back of your neck, “No one’s ever told me a piece of their heart was always mine.”
Just as you both were leaning towards each other, lips just barely brushing, loud, frantic knocking sounded at the front door.
You both jumped apart, eyes focused on the door as more knocks sounded. “Expecting company?” You asked, looking back at Jungkook as he stood up.
He shook his head, “Nope, you were surprise enough, baby.” He quickly knelt back down enough to connect his lips to yours, before he pulled away with a small smile, “Stay here?”
You just nodded, watching him head for the door, and slowly pulling it open as he peeked around it.
“I’m gonna kick your ass, Jungkook.” You heard Namjoon threaten him, before he was pulled into a hug.
You couldn’t help the laugh that caught their attention as Namjoon pushed his way into the apartment, his eyes immediately landing on you. “Do you know how many times I’ve called you?” He asked exasperatedly, sighing as he crossed his arms over his chest like a disappointed dad.
You made a face, looking away from him, “Sorry, Joon. I was going to text you eventually to tell you he was okay.”
The older man sighed softly, his eyes roaming the room before he looked at Jungkook next to him, his eyes softening, “You didn’t tell us it was getting bad again.”
Jungkook nodded, “I know. You guys have all just been so busy lately, and I thought I could deal with it this time. I’m sorry, Hyung.”
Namjoon quickly pulled him in for another, tighter hug, “Same thing I always tell you, Kook, it’s not something you have to apologize for. We were just worried.” They pulled away from each other and Namjoon looked over at you with a smile, “But, I can see you’re in good hands, so I’ll get out of here.”
A couple minutes later, and with a promise that Jungkook would text everybody before the night was over, Namjoon was out the door, leaving you and Jungkook in a comfortable silence as you crossed the floor towards him.
Without a word, you wrapped your arms around his waist and planted your face on his chest. He snaked his arms around your body and pulled you closer.
“Can you promise me something?” You whispered, not looking up at him.
“Anything.”
You let out a quiet sigh, “Will you try to tell me, the next time you start feeling like this?” You asked, finally picking your head up to gaze up at him. “Will you let me help you?”
He blinked a few times, staring into your eyes before a smile pulled at his lips and he nodded slowly, “You already help me, baby. But I promise, I’ll tell you.”
You stood on your tip toes, leaning towards him, “Thank you.” You whispered before you lightly pressed your lips to his, “Why don’t you go shower, and I’ll clean up a bit before I make us something for dinner?”
“I can just order us something.”
You shook your head, pulling yourself from his arms, “I want to cook.”
He saw the look in your eyes, and knew you wouldn’t let him win this, so he smiled down at you again, “I will only agree, if you stay the night? You can borrow some of my clothes and if we’re feeling it in the morning, we can make breakfast together?”
Your heart fluttered in your chest and you smiled, nodded softly, “I think that’s doable.”
His smile seems to grow, and he leaned down to kiss you again before he headed down the hall to shower, quickly turning around before he got too far, “Hey,”
You turned towards him, “Hmm?”
“I love you.”
You could feel the warmth spreading over your cheeks- through you, and you were surprised how easy it was to believe him, and to just know that he meant it.
“I love you, too.”

I came across a post about some show called The Other Two and it was making fun of Angels in America and I just...I didn't know how to react to it beyond rage. Like do young LGBT+ people understand how important that play is? How much it meant to our community and still means? Why are we all so irony poisoned that we put down the things that gave us comfort in a time where all of us are faced with the very real possibility of being erased from existence and murdered by the right wing nut jobs passing horrible legislation calling us child groomers. I'm so fucking sad and angry.
I'm in two minds about young LGBTQ people these days. On the one hand -- it's great that they get to grow up in an environment where they can (more or less) be themselves, have institutional supports like marriage and Pride Month and LGBTQ characters in media and plenty of visible discussion. It really, really is. All of that progress was hard won and we shouldn't WANT them to have gone through the exact same struggles as their elders. That's always the thing -- fight so your kids can have a better life, and we shouldn't want that to be any other way.
On the other hand, because this is the case, a lot of younger LGBTQ people don't respect the community's struggles, believe that they're real, learn its history, or understand the magnitude of the threat it is once again facing now. Instead they end up doing things like embracing TERF logic and arguing on social media about who has the right to use the most hyper-specific microlabel, pushing us all into smaller and smaller separate boxes because "queer is a slur!!!" and relentlessly gatekeeping and moralizing at other vulnerable people, both inside the community and outside it. And man, that just does not sit right with me. Of course, not all of them are like this, but a not-insubstantial number are, and it troubles me.
As for Angels in America: I saw Part 1 live in 2010, after reading both parts beforehand. It knocked the fucking SHIT out of me, and this is even before I had consciously realized that I myself was queer (though I was already reading a ton of queer lit/history like This Just Seems Neat, because I was clueless). So I don't know why the irony-poisoned postmodern masses feel the need to get their jollies out of taking shots at it, especially since, once again, times have changed and LGBTQ art and experience is represented in a whole lot of other ways than just "AIDS tragedy." Which is as it should be! But if anyone thinks that it's okay to then mock, minimize, ignore, or otherwise discount everything that led us to the point of them smugly having the ability to do that, then yeah. Fuck off. Jfc.

Chapter 19
Insurrection - Part 1
Re: Application letter to Foxbury – Biology with elective in Veterinary Science
Dear Dr. Gilscarbo, PhD. It is with great pleasure that I submit my application for the distinguished degree in Biology at Foxbury University.
Tumblr media
At present, I am finishing my studies at Newcrest High, and I have already secured several scholarships. My dream is to become a veterinarian and open my very own vet clinic. I feel that this would be the best way to combine my love for animals and my need to do good.
Tumblr media
As you may be aware, my mother and father also both attended Foxbury in their youth. My mother went on to become a great astrophysicist, responsible for recently reestablishing direct contact with our neighbours on Sixam.

My father became a renowned lawyer. It is my firm belief that attending Foxbury will also put me on the path to greatness.
Tumblr media
For this essay, I have chosen to illustrate how animals have made a great difference in my life. I do not believe that I would be who I am today without my beloved childhood dog, Maggie, and the other pets in my life.
Tumblr media
To understand what Maggie meant to me, let me first take you back to my early childhood. When my grandfather died, my entire family was understandably distraught, and my parents decided to adopt a young pitbull from a shelter. The dog immediately sensed that I, a toddler at the time, needed her protection, and she was always by my side.
Tumblr media
Maggie and I grew up together, and she became my trusty companion, sleeping next to my bed every night, and waiting for me when I came home from school.
Tumblr media
She was also by my side on the night that changed both my life and Sixam relations forever.
Tumblr media
I had gone to bed while my older brother was out with some friends, but I wasn’t asleep yet when I heard him come home. I also heard unfamiliar voices and my mother’s excited screams of disbelief.
Tumblr media
I climbed out of bed, and went out in the hall, where I saw my parents and my brother – with two people I didn’t yet know.
Tumblr media
Of course, my mother had told me about her adventures on Sixam, but this was their first visit back in over a decade.
Tumblr media
After a brief introduction, my father tried to put me back to bed, but I couldn’t sleep.
Tumblr media
I was scared because I knew that these people, who looked like my brother, could only have come to take him away.
Tumblr media
My father tried to explain everything to me. He and my mother had been anticipating this for years.
Tumblr media
He told me that Daniel’s biological father on Sixam was very ill and never had any other children.
Tumblr media
It was important for my brother to go to Sixam and learn whatever he could while his father still lived, so he could take over his seat on the council.
Tumblr media
As the first hybrid in a position of power at Sixam, my parents were worried for his safety, but his uncle, Tomnu, promised to keep him safe.
Tumblr media
My mother, who had recently made the first breakthroughs in wormhole technology, suggested that she could go with them, to set up matching technology on Sixam, so direct communication, and perhaps later even travel, might become possible.
Tumblr media
My father immediately asked to talk to her in private. He would not allow her to leave, and this was the first time I ever heard my parents have a serious fight.
Tumblr media
I heard their loud voices through the wall, my father arguing that my mother couldn’t leave us, that he couldn’t lose her, and my mother crying, afraid to let her oldest son go alone. Again, Maggie comforted me.
Tumblr media
I am happy that my mother decided to stay, and instead teach the Sixams as much as possible, so that they could set up the other portal on Sixam. If she had left, she might not have come back. My brother still has not.

hey dude! What's up :)) been just a little since l've said something
Initially, this is me saying thank you and goodbye
This isn't supposed to be a weird pity story, so l'm so unbelievably sorry if it comes off that way, lol.
When I began reading your work, I was enamoured with fiction because of personal issues (as many usually are, honestly, I know I'm one of god knows how many people trying to run away from life for just a second with fanfics or media in general). I don't know if I will ever be able to communicate this properly, hell, this will even be unbelievable funny or dramatic but I need to get this across because it's coming from a genuine place. Your stories and work thus far has brought me comfort, immense heaps of it, and even still when I deal with things that feel out of reach or too much to actually face head on I find myself wandering back to syg or just your blog in general
I mean this, from my entire heart, thank you and thank Bee. A million times thank you, for making that one silly silly stupid piece of fanfiction, because oh my god it got me through some major stressful hardships within my life for the past 3 years.
I am leaving tumblr, however I’m aware I have submitted asks with my actual accounts before, so you'll likely be able to see they're still gonna be up. I'm just deleting tumblr the app instead of my account, but for other social platforms they will be deleted properly (such as quotev) so I won’t be indulging in much reading anymore when it comes to fanfics and such lol
I don't know if I'll come back, if I do I likely will not be back for long or to be as active as l've been because of the toll social media’s taken. So even as ridiculous as this feels, to tell someone I’m simply a fan of and barely truly know, that their fanfic of murderers and their love story with my self insert kept me pushing through a lot of tough days, I genuinely just had to.
I needed to thank both you and your partner for the work you've both put out. I still have that smiley pin I’d made, and I will cherish what you made quotev have been for me ( I literally found out about the website during early or late 2020 I can barely remember, then later found your fic, I was DEEP DIVING into that shit LMAO )
I hope whatever happens for you and bee in the future is only good, and I only will wish nothing but the best of luck with everything man.
feel free to post this (idk what it’s called but when you publicly reply lol) or not, as long as you read this it’ll mean lots to me !! >:))
your coolest weirdest ticci toby fan whose also named toby, 🐚 annon
I always struggle to convey gratefulness for messages like this and readership- especially repeated readership. My life would be different if it were not for comments and messages egging us on to keep writing from syg to ho1c. While it's easy to say that writing is solely out of passion for the craft there is also the drive to share something with others. Hearing those others loud or quiet as a favorite- does push us forward when we have no motivation or desire to work. That drive has made us closer as a couple, better thinkers, and a halfway decent writing team. I thank you and all the others who send us stuff even if it's shit post asks I never answer because I like having them in my inbox like a personal horde of platonic Valentine's. I like keeping the pieces you give me to myself sometimes. I know it may seem like I'm ignoring you but I find genuine comfort in these messages. That there are so many. That they are so varied. That we have reached beyond our shut-in existence to touch the lives of others.
I find myself wondering where an anon has gone when I do not hear from them in awhile. I wish them well. I wish them better standards than us.
Maybe we'll meet again someday space cowboy. If you're ever back in town feel free to shoot me (a message).
Thank you for reaching out. Thank you for reading. I wish you peace and love and good books.

~ Nesta ~
The ache between my thighs is slight when I wake up the following morning, but pleasant. There’s no confusion as I lay half on top of my husband, all of my bare skin lined up with his. My leg is hitched up on his thigh and one of his hands is, of course, on my ass. I lift my head to look at his sleeping face…
Only to find him awake and already gazing down at me.
“Good morning.” He smiles and his voice tells me he hasn’t been awake for long.
“Mmm, good morning.” I lean up and press my lips to his, feeling that hand on my ass tighten as he squeezes.
“How do you feel?” He asks, lips still brushing against mine.
“Sore,” I admit, chuckling. “But good. Amazing.”
He smiles, but cups my face, running his thumb over my cheekbone. “No regrets about what we did last night?”
I hesitate only for a second, considering what I’d told him in therapy. Cassian notices, but doesn’t push, doesn’t take my hesitation personally, knowing I’m working out my thoughts. “I only regret that we let it get to that point.”
His eyes soften as his thumb brushes over my bottom lip. “Sex isn’t everything, but I feel like nothing else is missing now. Everything is falling back into place.”
“I know what you mean,” I whisper, and I mean it. There’s a certain intimacy, an irreplaceable closeness that sex with the person you love creates. We had been missing that closeness for so long, and now I finally feel whole. Running my hand down his chest, I sigh contentedly. “I’m sorry.”
His brows furrow. “For what?”
“I know most of our issues began with me,” I say, tracing the ink on his chest with my finger. “And I haven’t owned up to that like I should. I know I’ve made a lot of mistakes, but I promise not to be like that anymore. I promise to communicate and not hide from my pain. I promise not to push you away.”
He’s listening to me quietly and when it’s clear I’m done talking, he takes my chin and makes me meet his gaze. “I need you to know that there has not been a day that has gone by that I have not been completely in love with you.”
Suddenly, I realize how much I’ve been longing to hear those words. How much I needed to hear them, how much I needed him to say them. Emotion springs from nowhere and my vision goes blurry. He reaches up as a tear falls and brushes it away, and when the tears keep coming he rolls on top of me and kisses my tears away.
“I love you,” he breathes. “I always have, and I always will.”
Check out is at eleven and we need to be at the airport by noon, but it’s only eight.
We spend the next couple hours showing each other just how deeply our love goes.
………..
“So it seems the time away did some good,” Gwyn says as we sit on the couch in front of her desk.
We’re a completely different couple than we were last time we were here. Cassian’s arm is around my shoulders and my hand rests on his leg. I’m leaning into him, comfortable in his loose embrace.
“You could say that,” Cassian replies, his arm hugging me closer for just a second before releasing me again.
I blush. Like a schoolgirl. I am twenty-nine years-old, a New York Times bestselling author and I am blushing because my husband loosely insinuated we had sex.
I don’t even know who I am.
“That’s good to hear.” Her smile is genuine and I can tell she cares about her clients. We aren’t a paycheck for her. She really wants to help us work through our issues and make it out of this stronger than we were. “Nesta, I know you were concerned about your workload while you were gone. How is it feeling now that you’re home? Are you still feeling overwhelmed?”
I take a minute to think about my words before I say them. “Honestly? Yes…but I’m managing my emotions better, I think.” Cassian nods his agreement beside me. “Most of it has to do with my agent, not necessarily the work itself, but I’m working on standing up for myself when it comes to him. So…it’s a work in progress.”
Gwyn nods thoughtfully. “A work in progress sounds promising.” She sets her pen down and looks between the two of us. “So, now that you two are home, what are a couple of goals you can set for yourselves?”
I look up at Cassian, who's already looking at me. He speaks first. “I think it’s time we let our family know about our past with infertility.” He says it hesitantly, as if he’s not sure how I’ll react, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while now, too. “I think it’s important that we share that burden.”
“I agree,” I say, and I think it surprises him. “Especially since we’re not sure what the future holds, you know?”
Cassian gives me a confused expression and Gwyn remains quiet, letting us have this conversation. “What do you mean?”
“Well,” I say, suddenly feeling more aware of Gwyn’s presence, “now that we’re having sex again, things happen…you know? I mean, I know we’re being careful, me being on the pill and all, but stuff happens. I don’t know if I’m ever going to get pregnant again, and if I don’t…” I don’t finish that thought, and I start to stare at where my hand is on his lap. “If I don’t, then I guess it’s just not in the cards for us, but if I do…I want my sisters, and Rhys and Az, to be there with us. I want them to know, and if we have to go through something like that again, and gods, I hope we never have to again, but…if we do…I want to be able to lean on them for strength, too. For both of us. So, I say all that to say that I agree. I think we should share that burden. They love us, and will want to be there for us.”
Gwyn’s smile is encouraging and when I turn to Cassian, his eyes are lined with silver. I can read the pride on his face. A month ago, I wouldn’t even acknowledge the loss of our baby. I wouldn’t let myself think about it or I’d fall back into the dark place I barely clawed my way out of. Now, I want to tell our family, to take another step towards the closure I never thought I’d have.
I squeeze his leg gently, letting him know he doesn’t need to say anything. Instead, he presses a kiss to my temple and clears his throat. He looks to Gwyn and asks, “What else you got, doc?”
She laughs, shaking her head at him, as I’ve done a thousand times. “Just look at the personal progress you’ve made, Cassian. Asking for prompts?” She glances down at her notebook. “As always, only share whatever information you feel comfortable doing so, but I couldn’t help but notice you mentioned that you’re having sex again. I know that was a hurdle for both of you, for different reasons. How are you feeling, individually, after taking that step again?”
We look at each other and I give him a nod indicating he can go first. Turning back towards Gwyn, he removes his arm from my shoulders and laces his fingers together, staring at them. I know he’s not pulling away from me, the heat of his thigh pressing into mine is proof of that. “I’m a very physical person and I don’t mean that in just a sexual way. I work a physically demanding job, I enjoy working my body hard at the gym, and I crave the intimacy of physical contact. I hadn’t realized just how draining it was to not have that contact, to not hold her hand in the car or curl up on the couch, until it was gone. And even then, I didn’t fully understand what I was missing. We drifted apart and I thought the wrongness I felt was due to our marriage deteriorating, but even when things started to get better, things still weren’t quite right. Now that we’re having sex, it feels like things are getting back to the way they used to be.” He glances over at me and I can see the slight blush high in his cheeks. “However, we are a, uh, very sexual couple. Sex isn’t everything, of course, but it has always been a big part of our relationship. With it missing, we sort of lost sight of who we were, together. Now it feels like we’re finally getting back on track.”
His words have me emotional in all the right ways.
“You feel the rekindling of normalcy and connection,” Gwyn says, kindly, and Cassian nods. “Very good. Nesta? How do you feel now that you’ve taken that step?”
I hesitate, but Cassian doesn’t seem to take offense to it. He simply watches me, and waits patiently. “On the topic of our past, I am scared of getting pregnant again,” I admit, quietly. “But, I’m on birth control. I don’t think I’m going to be off of it any time soon. And, I agree with Cassian. Sex has always been a big part of our relationship and it’s felt like something has been missing. Now that we’ve found that intimacy again, it feels right. I feel like we’ve been mending a connection that had been really, really broken for a long time.”
Gwyn is quiet for a long time, then she says, “I’m proud of you two. I can see your growth and hear the truth behind your words. I want to encourage you to always be mindful. Keep communication open. Do not go a day without talking about your feelings, even now when things are going well. It’s when things are going good that you need to keep working on your relationship. Never stop building your foundation and I have no doubt that the two of you will thrive.”
Cassian's hand finds mine and squeezes. There’s a promise in his touch, one that makes me want to climb on top of him right here and now and proclaim my love. But I keep it in my pants as we wrap up our session with Gwyn.
I do kiss him the moment we’re in the car, though. I think I catch him off guard as I fling myself over the middle console, grab his face, and shove my tongue into his mouth. He laughs quietly against my lips before he starts kissing me back.
We go on like that for a minute before I break it, and when I lean back, his eyes have that look that makes my toes curl and my heart beat a little bit faster.
“What was that for?” he asks.
“Because I love you,” I tell him, without any hesitation.
“I love you, too,” he promises, then he’s taking my hand as I drive us out of the parking lot.
We’re halfway down Main Street when he squeezes my hand and says, “We’ve almost been married ten years.”
I can’t believe it, can’t believe that we’ve been married for almost a decade. I can’t believe that I almost lost him, too, after all that time, when we still have a lifetime to go. “We have,” I say, playfully. “I can’t believe we got married when we were just babies.”
Cassian chuckles. “Do you ever regret getting married so young?”
His question is not judgmental, only curious. I glance at him. “No. Never.”
“Me either,” he says, his voice light as his thumb brushes the back of my hand. “I knew I wanted to marry you from the second I met you.”
I snort, keeping my eyes on the road. “Yeah, right. I was a bitch to you.”
“Which I loved.”
Now I outright laugh. “Liar.”
He shakes his head. “I swear. You were feisty. Even when you pissed me off, I couldn’t get enough of you.”
I pull up to a redlight just as he finishes speaking, and he’s looking at me with the softest eyes and the easiest smile. I feel my cheeks redden, which is ridiculous, but I’m too in love with him to care or be embarrassed.
His grin widens as I start moving again. “Ten years,” he says, again, and I feel something similar to teenage butterflies fluttering around in the pit of my stomach. “Let’s get remarried.”
I nearly swerve off the road. “What?”
“Yeah, like a vow renewal type of thing,” he says, nonchalantly. “Let’s do that.”
As my thoughts run wild, I pull the car off the road and put it in park on the shoulder. When I take my hands off the wheel and face Cassian, he looks confused, but then I ask, “Are you fucking kidding me?”
He hesitates. “What?”
“Let’s do that?” I repeat. “That’s how you’re going to ask me to renew our vows?”
His grin returns. “Yeah. Why? Not good enough?”
“No!” I yell, shoving him, which only makes him laugh. “You can’t ask me something like that so…so….casually.”
“Nesta—”
“You’re practically proposing marriage again,” I go on, staring at him dubiously. “You can’t propose in the passenger seat while I’m driving down the road.”
“Pretty sure I proposed marriage a decade ago,” he mutters, eyes bright.
“No,” I say, shaking my head. “I demand a romantic gesture. Then I’ll give you my answer.” When I look at him, he’s grinning that insufferable grin of his. “You proposed romantically. Be romantic now.”
His humored eyes soften. “I was pretty romantic, wasn’t I?”
I think back to that day, when he proposed. It was early spring, but it was a beautiful night. We were in the midst of a storm, but there was a lull in the weather and although the grass was damp and the sky was gray, it was warm outside and the sun was peeking through the clouds. He went on and on about his love for me, about what we meant to each other, and then when the softest of rains began to fall again from the heavens, he asked me to marry him.
I said yes, with no hesitation.
“I remember everything I said that day,” he says, quietly. “And I meant every damn word. I still mean every damn word.”
I swallow, trying to hide the rush of emotion that has flooded my body, my soul, my entire being. “You do?”
He nods. “I told you,” he began, taking my hand in his, “that I loved you more than anyone I had ever loved before. I hadn’t even realized that the love I had for you was possible. You completely surprised me; came out of nowhere. I hadn’t meant to fall in love with you, but I did. Without hesitation. Without doubt. That day, I vowed that I would love you until the day that I die, that I would love you unconditionally, and that no matter how hard life gets….I would be there for you. And I hope you know that’s still true. I will love you, Nesta, until I’m not here anymore, and there is nothing that you could do that would make me stop loving you. No matter what happens, I’ll be here, and I am just in love with you today as I was the day that I asked you to marry me.”
I don’t realize that I’m crying until he reaches up and brushes away my tears.
“I want to renew our vows so that you know, without a doubt, that I am inconceivably in love with you,” he breathes.
“Inconceivably?” I ask, breath hitched on a laugh. “Yeah, I read your books.” He grins, his thumb brushing along my bottom lip.
I laugh, the sound bringing more tears to my eyes.
“What do you say?” He asks, leaning in so our lips are a hair's breadth apart.
My eyes fall shut as his breath fans over my lips, smelling of spearmint gum and it takes everything in me not to crawl over the middle console and show him how I feel.
But I don’t.
Instead, I kiss him softly, sweetly, and pull away. I smile as I breathe, “Ask me later.”
I can already see the mischief in his eyes, the plan he’s coming up with. “You’re never going to see it coming.”
“Good.”
Putting the car into drive, I pull back onto the road, merging into traffic. Cassian takes my hand, pressing a kiss to my knuckles.
It feels like we’re going to be okay.
More than okay.
Perfect.

to be irish is to leave -
i know this, i’ve always known this. i was raised on stories of emigration and of new dreams: american, english, australian, dreams of a house of your own, cities bigger than anyone could imagine, a career you’d never get to have at home. the songs sung at the end of the night in cosy pubs were always lamenting - songs grieving those who left and never returned, songs that told stories of what it means to be irish: to leave, to build a new life elsewhere, and to still be irish at your very core. because we leave, we do, but we never shake off our irishness, finding community in corners of the world filled with other irish people, thousands of miles from home but finding solace amidst your loneliness with the neighbour who grew up ten miles down the road.
it’s no country for women - that’s what they used to say, why they left. it’s no country for young people, now. we say it, over and over - with your family, as they welcome you home for christmas. with your friends, over christmas pints, the conversation always turning to emigration - she’s left too, you know, to sydney, and there’s a gang of them in london, and he’s gone to canada. our hometown is quiet now, a generation emigrating all over again. they say that leaving is in our blood but it’s not there out of a joy travel and a desire to see the world - not just that, at least. no, no, leaving is in our blood because this country we love so deeply doesn’t love us back.
this country raised me - the green fields and rolling hills and waves crashing against the shore are all embedded deep in my DNA, the very core of who i am. this country raised me, it shaped me, it’s one of the biggest parts of who i am - irish, i say, when i’m asked when i’m from, even though i haven’t lived here since i was 22, even though i have built a life in another country and i don’t know if i see myself coming back. we all feel it - raised to so fiercely love a country that doesn’t love us back. “i’ll never afford a house here.” “i didn’t think i’d be living with my parents this close to 30.” “it costs too much to build a life here.” “if i want my dream job - i have to go.”
i have to go, i have to go, i have to go - i knew this from the moment i settled on a dream: a career i could never pursue in ireland the motivation behind the one way ticket i booked all those years ago. i love this country - we all do. i fought for the betterment of this country, i marched and i led campaigns and i voted over and over for a better future for the country i love so dearly: and still, i ended up standing in the airport, suitcases in hand, and i got on a plane and left. because to be irish is to leave - and so i left. i left, and built a life elsewhere, gave that love and passion to another place, and the ache for ireland lessens, day by day, but i still ache for home, ache to be able build a life in the land i love so much.
ireland will always welcome you home, is the thing - with wide open arms, and a bright smile. this year marked the seventh christmas i arrived home to a choir, to news cameras, to a rapturous reception of carols and clapping, strangers happy to see ireland’s children return home. ireland will always welcome us home - but she waves us off just as enthusiastically. january comes and the airport is full again - tearful goodbyes, suitcases of presents and all the home comforts you never learned to live without, and the plane always leaves: taking you back to the place you’ve built your new life, ireland in the rearview mirror.
you learn to live with the homesickness, rugby matches in irish bars and monthly drinks with familiar accents a salve for the part of your heart that will always ache for home: because to be irish is to leave, yes, but to be irish is to leave and to always long to come home to ireland’s shores. and to be irish is to know you might never come home at all.
