Y’all. Leverage and Leverage Redemption are some of the best f*cking exposés about every layer of corruption that exists in our world.
Why? Because they can make each episode/story have the most satisfying ending, and it’s so fun to watch because of the camp.
But also, where else are you going to watch a show that makes you think about how there are people out in the world who exploit and abuse like competitive video game players? Where would you even begin to think about that? But they did it and they’re right… those people exist.
Abuse and corruption is everywhere. And not only does it talk about this system existing and thriving, but it also illuminates how it doesn’t matter how much you fight every corrupt person, because the system itself is broken. But helping one person at a time by exposing their abuser is a good place to start.
With film on shaky grounds right now, we NEED to keep fighting for these stories. We need to fight for the anti-capitalist rhetoric of leverage. The gay/trans supportive storylines of Good Omens. The modern issues brought up in Futurama. All of it.
We need people to be able to see themselves and see their stories so we can also fight to change their circumstances.

The fact that Sony (a multi dollars company) made Hobie brown one of the main cast of atsv considering that he's an anti-capitalist punk is actually pretty hypocritical
Don't get me wrong, love the representation and all, but see the way they sell his merchs at mind altering prices, how some of his comments are treated more as joke than anything and how his character has become an aesthetic to people, etc? Yeaaaah.

Hey guys uh once you wake up from the spell of consumerism and capitalism and realize how immoral, exploitative, empty, meaningless, and all consuming it is, how are you supposed to exist? How am I supposed to feel happy ever? I feel like I’m in the Truman Show™️ and I’m watching the planet burn to ash. Any advice/tips to get through this crushing existential dread would be great thx

It might just be because I wanted to go to the library, it might be because I have 54 cents in my bank account currently, but I've been thinking a lot about how everything in life at this point is becoming inaccessible, or hard to access at least, if you do not have some form of money attached to it.
Like I know libraries are in general one of the last kinds of places you can go without needing to use any sort of money. You can receive things without needing to use any source of money, i.e. books, or you can just use the space and exist without needing to use any sort of money. And I use that quite frequently in order to get things accomplished outside of the house. I'll take my laptop I'll set up at a desk somewhere with my headphones on and I'll just work.
But I've had 54 cents in my bank account that I've had to stretch out over a week, and I have the necessary things paid for, I have a roof over my head, I have food. This isn't about whether or not I can afford to live.
It's about the things I want to do, while living. I wanted to go to the library, and I couldn't, because the one that is in the town I live in is in the middle of the city, far enough away from my house that I have to drive to it and can't just walk, but in the middle of a city so the library doesn't even have dedicated parking, and I would have to pay just to park.
And the library does offer coupons you can scan at the parking deck when you leave, they'll pay for up to an hour of your parking, but if I want to just exist at the library for several hours and work on my poetry, I can't at this point. I have to wait until next week when I get paid. Because the nearest library I can't even park at, and the next closest to me, I don't have the gas money to make it to when I also have to get to work.
And I don't know, there's so many more things that can be illustrated as to why our capitalistic society is failing us, why it makes society as a whole unapproachable and inaccessible. But I feel like it says something that even the libraries are becoming pay-to-access.
And I don't think I like the "something" it says.

Gotta love how people treat the capitalist boom and bust cycle like it’s some kind of inevitable natural phenomenon.

Hey y'all's in the state of Kansas DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, RENT FROM EUCALYPTUS REALTY or ANY Property owned by LEW MCGINNIS
First, my experience with them;
I had a 6 month lease filed with an apartment building that ended in October 2021, I signed the paper confirming I would be out in october, I moved out in october 2021. I had an eviction filed against me November 4th, 2021. I just found out they succeeded in filing an eviction against me. I was not contacted regarding this at all, even though they had my active phone number on file and had called me after I moved regarding paperwork on an old roommate who'd moved earlier in the year. They filed an eviction on me, for an apartment I was not living in, after my lease had ended, and made zero attempt at contacting me. I did not find out until attempting to rent a house with a friend. Noone has answered the phone for me, or for the new renting agency, and my application is going to be denied. All because of an eviction filed against me. For an apartment I did not live in anymore. After my lease had ended. What should I do now? I would try to pay anything they're trying to charge if I could get them on the phone. It's not like I can fight it in court, they already won. Everything I'm reading just says "ask the owner nicely to get it removed" and I don't think that's possible now given what I've found since looking into them.
Because HERE'S what I found after a little digging;
The owner is a real estate person based out of Oklahoma, and owns multiple properties in Topeka, Emporia, and Wichita (I found the number 35 in Topeka, but I couldn't verify that or tell you how many in the other two cities) . I'm finding all these news artical now about how he's filed the most evictions out of any realitor in my county, how his properties have major upkeep issues (my apartment had a hole through the glass back door that was never fixed, and I have video I can dig up of a leak in my ceiling from the apartment above me pouring water into my bathroom multiple times a day. Not leaking, or dropping, POURING, and it only got fixed cause I was lucky enough to run into the handyman and speak with him myself, and I'm even luckier he was there to run into) how he's had mold outbreaks in both Topeka and Emporia due to maintenance neglect, literal tax evasion on those Emporia properties , bribing tenants for good reviews in Wichita (he later refused to pay), rent hikes (the whole reason I didn't renew my lease is because of a 100$ rent hikes + new fees), bedbug and roach issues among other things.
This feels completely unfixable. I'm going to have to grovle at this man's feet to fix the fact that HE EVICTED ME FROM AN EMPTY APARTMENT AFTER MY LEASE HAD ENDED and even then it's not gaurinteeed.
Y'all's should boost this cause I don't want anyone else in ks to get stuck dealing with this shit
Don't rent from Eucalyptus Realty or Lew McGinnus

As an avid fan of Mike Pondsmith's Cyberpunk setting I cannot help but just look at the year 2024 in the US and be like: Yea Mike, you were a little off and a bit ahead, or a lot, but like holy fuck the internet and cyber tech has been so misused and is now the tool of corporations to fuck us over.
First off, phone phishing??? I have spam filters and still get 2-5 phishing phone calls a day that, if I do pick up, try to trick me into giving away my voice and data. This has become so common that literally no one I know answers a call unless they know the number or are actively awaiting a call from an unknown number (for job interviews, appointments, etc).
We, on the regular, deal with AI that is meant to steal our voices, names, and other cruical data. This has brought us to manage unknown numbers the same way we manage superstitious entities such as fae in fairy tales. How fucked up is that?
Streaming, once an alternative to and then a replacement of video stores, has come to replace TV and is severely less consumer friendly as access to media has become severely fragmented by the corporate nature of these services. I won't even get into the decreasing quality of popular media, just simply look at Disney to see the shift.
Social media? Something that was meant to connect family, friends, and community? Yea, that's now a sespool of ads, has algorithms that will try to feed you misinformation, and has been made into an addictive drug meant to keep people seperated and inactive in the freetime that we have.
There's come a large group of people in my generation (gen Z) and those who came before us (Millenials), who simply do not pay for our media. Piracy of old and new movies, shows, videogames, music, and even books has simply become the norm because we cannot afford to pay for it, and what we can access on the corpo sites has been severely reduced in quality by easily evaded ads.
And what do I have to say to that? We live in a capitalist society and we gotta play the game to live until we break it. They can't create a product that we're willing to use? Boohoo, someone outcompeted them by providing us with a product that removes ads that only serve to degrade, seperate, or comodify us. Corporations act like they deserve our subservience, money, and labor -- they don't.
Moving on from just entertainment and social media, search engines, our phones, and nearly everything we have to access the internet is used to track us and sell our data so that we may be comodified more efficiently by the corpos. We may say "I'm gonna google that", but many of us have stopped using google and other engines because of how bad they are at actually giving us good results. Task specific search engines and ones that don't track or sell our data (like duckduckgo) have become common place.
Also, just, most people do not own their own media? Some people don't own a single movie, show, song, book, videogame, or any other digital media and instead opt to stream them (ie spotify) or purchase access to them (ie steam). I know very few people in my generation who own a cd player or any type of physical music, and it just throws me.
The internet and digital tech could have been so much better and can do so much good, but no, it's used for capitalism instead.
Wage theft, job theft, piracy, and phishing.
Down with the capitalist system, let's bring on a future wherein our art, knowledge, social forums, and automatons are not weaponized against us so that we may share the resources we need to survive, thrive, and live fulfilling lives.
