Comic Review: Cartoon Network Presents #6

I said I was gonna do this, so let’s get this rolling!

Okay, so Cartoon Network Presents was among the first lineup of DC’s CN comics, alongside their Scooby-Doo book and The Flintstones and the Jetsons. Those are pretty self-explanatory, but CN Presents was meant to be a grab bag of the rest of their lineup, featuring favorites from the vast Hanna-Barbera library as well as some of their recent hits. At this point, I believe they were just doing Dexter’s Lab and Cow & Chicken, as Johnny Bravo’s first season was more or less written off as a failure at the time. But don’t worry, Johnny will have his day.

Okay, so confession time- this story is not new to me. Way back when, DC released a freebie comic which had stories from each of their three CN titles, and this was featured in there, alongside a short Scooby story where a stalker keeps on doning a costume to get closer to Daphne, and a Jetsons story where George is replaced by a robot version of himself. Needless to say, some serious memories came crawling back to me when I saw the cover.

Anyway, both of the stories featured in this issue are done by regulars in the comic industry, and I’ll bring up how apparent that is in a bit,

That said, I can see this story actually fit in an episode of Cow & Chicken, as it’s a cautionary tale that doesn’t go in the usual direction you’d expect, like many of David Feiss’ cartoons tend to do things. This starts off with Chicken littering, which goes against what his and Cow’s teacher taught them in school. Chicken, as per usual, is apathetic to his loud teacher’s learnings, but he changes his tune when Cow mentions that bringing in metal can bring you some change,

Needless to say, Chicken has some ideas, and he starts scourging around town. There’s a slight detour when he learns that you only receive payments from going to the trash collector directly, but it gives him incentive to have Flem and Earl help him out.

Alongside a dubious reading of Malcolm X’s philosophy.

The three of them find enough metal to hopefully make them a little richer, and they’re greeted at the trash heep by a weird looking Cerberus creature, and guess who they belong to!

Yeah, it’s the Red Guy. It’s not a Cow & Chicken segment without him, is it?

I had a better screenshot of his appearance, but it came out weird and I don’t feel like taking another, so let’s skip to this part where Chicken is caught cheating the scale, and is about to be rightfully punished along with Flem and Earl. Not by death, but by filling up the Red Guy’s furnace, which is actually pretty fair.

But have no fear, Supercow is on the way to come save the day! This comic even translates her dialogue for us, which the show never did.

It ends with her beating the shit out of Cerberus and the Red Guy, even though Chicken deserves his punishment. Flem and Earl, not so much.

It’s a fun enough story, and it does seem like a perfect fit for the show. The dialogue fits right in with the show.

Even Flem’s awkward, vaguely racist broken English. I’m not touching that one...

The art style is a little off, though, looking more like a regular DC comic than an episode of Cow & Chicken.

I mean, it looks like Chicken, but doesn’t the penciling look closer to an issue of Robin at the time instead of something? But it’s a minor complaint, as it’s still a fun read.

The b story is new to me, with a Quick Draw McGraw story. It starts off pretty ordinary, as El Kabong OLE’s himself to save the day. Er, not that ordinary, as El Kabong is a bit of a klutz and usually needs Baba Looey’s help, but it’s okay, something’s about to change.

It turns out that El Kabong’s identity may be liable for copyright infringement, as there’s a Canadian crime fighter known as Le Kabong.

We meet him here, and I believe he’s meant to be Loopy de Loop, but he looks more like Hokey Wolf... or maybe Mr. Jinx. Hanna-Barbeta made some nice-looking characters, but they get pretty samey.

Anyway, his agency was the one who ordered a cease and desist to El Kabong, while his French Canadian doppelganger refuses to follow suit, considering it unheroic. Until it’s discovered that someone kidnapped the local hockey team, and he takes action... so I guess he blames the devil we know? That isn’t really explained, as the next panel shows Quick Straw accepting a battle of the Kabongs.

So we’re about to get a WWE (or I guess WWF. Or maybe WCW?) match, until a new challenger approaches, with a German vigilante jumping in.

And then many more. This switches from wrestling to Super Smash Bros to a full on battle royale of the localized knock-offs. Which I won’t lie, it’s a pretty funny idea.

Luckily, what’s a Kabong without a trusty sidekick to save the day? A few of them attempt to team up to find a way to put a stop to this, including one who looks like Boo Boo with Yogi’s hat and Johnny Bravo’s glasses.

So it ends with the Kabong from Mars (no Spiders) threatening all of the puny humans to stop their shenanigans, and go back to their duties. Which hey, it works! And the story ends with Quick Draw attempting to turn the ten million pesos El Kabong received at the beginning from saving the day into cash. Except pesos are basically useless, which is funny haha right?

This reads like a Hanna-Barbera writer from the 90′s attempting to write a classic character in the present day, and mostly works alright. This does show off one problem with Quick Draw though, that its take on Hispanic culture during the period of the Wild West is problematic. Baba Looey for instance has an exaggerated voice, and he probably needs an overhaul to work today (how did that work in Jellystone btw? I still need to see it). And unfortunately, this point in the late 90′s isn’t all that much more sympathetic to Hispanic culture, as their take mostly stays the same.

But away from that, it’s pretty funny. I do really like Quick Draw when it focuses on how pathetic he is as a supposed hero, either with or without the El Kabong persona.

But I wouldn’t have known if this was in if I didn’t pick up the book. I do understand why Cow & Chicken was the main attraction- *insert Malcolm in the Middle “future is now, old man” img here*- but part of the appeal of Cartoon Network at the time was the mix of old and new school. It wasn’t uncommon to see a classic like Quick Draw next to a modern fav like Cow & Chicken.

But oh well, let’s finish this up. The letters column features a 12 year old offering some of his cartoon ideas- I hope John made it; another boy named John who offers a cute drawing of Space Ghost, and asks about Jan, Jase, and Blip, while insulting the latter, which the editor is not here for; and another boy asking if there are plans for stories featuring 2 Stupid Dogs or Secret Squirrel, as well as hopes for a Cow & Chicken comic. The editor shoots down 2 Stupid Dogs happening, and to be fair, I don’t believe that ever happens. Classic cartoons from 40 years earlier? Sure. Something that ended about five years earlier? Old news. But I do believe Secret Squirrel does show up at some point.

The editor then bemoans how no girls brought in letters this month, and offers a preview of the next issue, which involves Wacky Races. And guess what, I have that one too!

The issue proper ends with an editorial about the importance of recycling, which is fine and all, but my reaction to reading this was “blahblahblah put on more cartoons”

Not bad! Oh, and one more thing of note.

I know, I know, they’re the enemy, and I was all over CN at this point, but I have memories of this promotion. Even though I believe it was long over at this point, and Alex Mack should have aired its last episodes before this issue hit stands.

Ok I just thought this would be really cute,,

Bennett does not have a lot of friends so people who won't leave or blame him for his bad luck are like, his greatest treasures.

He values having somebody who will listen to him because you are the king of letting people ramble about their interests. And also he would ask you about yours! Any small thing he would find on an adventure he would risk tooth and nail to get to you if he thought you would like it.

Ok so I was trying to make a non biased pick since I know you so well but the more I thought about this the more in love with this pairing I am. Xiaolynx real.

The first meeting happens ages after you two take notice of each other. You hear about him from the inn keeper and he kind of is this little joke in your head. Hah scary guy who only eats almond tofu? That's kind of hilarious!

Wangshu in has some wonderful views and you visit the surrounding area to enjoy the flora and just some nice quiet areas to draw and so you've stayed at the inn occasionally. Of course the area is also not devoid of monsters, but ofc you have a vision.

Xiao sees you do some fun Anemo stuff, but you use it in some wacky way he's never seen before that you came up with yourself and he's absolutely dumbfounded, both intrigued and slightly insulted to see it used in such a way. Anyways he tends to watch you a little closer when he sees you around after that, also because oh god this poor artist is going to get murdered maybe.

Ok. Artist see pretty boy artist draw pretty boy. Your sketch book may or may not have some sketches inspired by the adeptus xiao. You leave this sketchbook up on the inn balcony and he noticed so he doesn't see you coming back to grab it. This is your real first meeting.

After that you talk a little bit more, you keep having odd run ins in the ancient ruins of Liyue which for you are art inspiration and for him are memories.

He likes how low key you are compared to others who meet him. You're not overbearing, and you keep making an effort to be kind to him even after he shakes you for being a mortal. There's this unspoken connection where you both know each other, and you both recognize each other but can't decide if the other does.

It's not until you fight off some monsters from the inn together that you really talk. You're treated to a complimentary meal by the inn keeper and share some almond tofu.

Ok lantern rite is where YOU take him for a first date but HE takes you somewhere he has good memories from. He is not the happiest of souls but he wants to share that some how.

You: *rants about something cool*

Xiao: *wow foolish mortals.*

You:

Xiao: *why did you stop??*

You have this freedom and detachment of the strict commerce he has seen Liyue fall into and it makes him nostalgic.

The first time you call upon him for protection he's grateful for an excuse to hang out with you. You pick up on it and start using it just to spend time with him.

Ok he will check on you all the time so if you leave little notes and qixing for him around and come back and notice they are gone. It's like Santa clause and cookies but xiao and almond tofu.

He will mimic little things you Do. If you do a snapping stim he just kinda unconsciously snaps a couple times too.

The kings of shared emotional quiet moments.

Ok part of the reason people are scared of him is because he says really out of pocket garbage. The thing about the snow? Random.

Both of you are too scared to order food it's an endless cycle. Xiao does it anyways because PROTECT LYNX MODE and it scared the restaurant workers.

Bullies you affectionate. Also easily embarassed so you have some lovely banter.

What you take as inside jokes between the two of you he thinks are human culture. Has lead to awkward encounters where he leaves like why the hell are the laughing. That's like a thing why- WHY ARE YOU LAUGHING.

And you gotta give him an I'm sorry smooch while he tries not to cry.

ALSO. YOU WOULD?? HE WOULD LOVE PUZZLES I don't know why he would just get so much satisfaction over "conquering" the puzzle. You'll be sitting there quietly and he'll slam a piece in.

Not a words of affirmation guy but the random wisdom he provides is unmatched and close to down right romantic which is not his intent.

I'm a physical touch xiao truther. I think he's just embarassed about any affection but shielding you, holding you, just keeping a hand on you is how he says he's there and you're safe.

every morning as you wait outside your high school for classes to start

you hear the thunder of his motorcycle

it’s loud, mildly obnoxious, and occasionally spits out fumes

but you don’t care

you actually like the sound of the bike and how the vibrations rumble in ur chest

it’s a sleek black and built almost entirely by him: old chassis, long handle bars, and a satisfying growl as the engine ignites

if you stand too close when he pulls up in the parking lot in the morning, you can feel the vibrations coming through the pavement

(your mum would probably lock you in a tower only a knight could enter if she ever found out you’d been on a motorcycle

…..not that you’d been on one

the owner of that motorcycle is your high school’s one and only bad boy

well, besides the fact that he rides a motorcycle

to do that fucking hair shake that you always see in movies

that can only mean “hot guy on a motorcycle”

oh and he then runs his fingers through his black hair

to make it appropriately ~windswept~

and, yes, he looks way too god damn hot

you almost flip your shit every morning just bc of him

he’s handsome like a fucking movie star

angled cheekbones, a defined nose and chin, a jawline so sharp it could ki— it could seriously hurt you

and don’t even start on his eyes

jeongin’s eyes are so dark you often wonder if they’re actually brown

if he looks at you in the halls, you immediately get the sense he could somehow see into your soul

and, judging by the dark aura he has, probably can

jeongin isn’t particularly horrible or anything, but he’s known throughout the school to, honestly, not give a flying fuck

about anything

he’s….a little chaotic

for example, he flouts any rule he doesn’t like

and he talks back if a teacher says something he doesn’t agree with

(this has lead to some very heated discussions in class

although, you were actually inclined to agree with him most of the time, since he usually brings up some good points and such

(it’s generally a good idea, you’ve mused on a regular basis, to treat people like human beings and not like machines only in existence to produce goods and perform services to a select few)

most of your classes are with him

and he’s really smart

like the kind of smart where he barely does any work but still passes the class with an A

i mean, who said he could do that??!!?!

which doesn’t work

after a couple tries back and forth through the doorway

you finally both make it out of the classroom

and you start to speed walk away since your friends are waiting so you all can hang out

“hey, y/n!” comes down the hall after you

you turn around quickly to find jeongin standing right behind you

“um, so i noticed you really like strawberries”

first of all:

yang jeongin—your school’s super hot bad boy, the guy you’re only a little obsessed with bc he rides a motorcycle, the inexplicably brilliant student, and total badass—just spoke to you

second of all:

he’s holding something wrapped in absolutely adorable cat (and strawberry) wrapping paper

that’s completely against his aesthetic

but matches yours to a tee ( ◡‿◡ ♡)

“y/n?” *holds out package*

you have to mentally shake yourself a little

but you’re back now

“Yeah, I got you this. I hope you like it.” (●´ω｀●)

“thanks?” you say a bit lamely

you take the package and get a whiff of sweetbread

you’d half expected jeongin to blast on outta there asap

but now he’s just standing in front of you, just kinda shifting back and forth

wait…is he nervous??

you slowly unwrap the package, careful not to damage the wrapping paper

(you are so going to reuse it or hang it on the wall or something ajdsdjfg)

and inside is a rounded sweetbread with strawberries delicately placed on top amongst swirls of pink icing

you gasp quietly

fucking hell it’s the cutest thing you’ve ever seen

jeongin’s just watching you, a small smiling spreading across his face

(which you don’t notice bc b r e a d)

you take a small bite of the treat and

。*:゜♡ヽ(*’∀’*)/♡゜:。*。

IT’S SOOOOO GOOD!!!!

you take another bite before looking up at jeongin and you finally see his smile

( ◡‿◡ ♡) (♡‿♡) (*♡∀♡)

it’s actually the best thing you’ve ever seen

there’s so much genuine happiness, and just a hint of mischievous mirth, in his smile

you feel like you’re looking into the sun, it’s so bright

why did jeongin, of all people get you, of all people, a sweetbread?

jeongin, completely unable to look cool anymore and shifting back and forth on the balls of his feet: “is it good?”

“OH MY GOD YES!!!”

and then you do something you never thought you’d do

ever

in the whole world ever

you throw your arms around yang jeongin’s neck

and give him a really big hug

his arms come up and around you to hug you back almost immediately,

which you were expecting even less than your own actions

but his hug is wonderful, even if he’s holding you like fine china

in a moment, you remember yourself and quickly step back

jeongin is blushing so much that he looks like a strawberry

(so good you just wanna eat him up (◕‿◕))

((y/n pls,,,,, not here....))

and you know you’re blushing just as much

you splutter an apology and run off down the hallway

and because you’re running off,

you don’t notice that jeongin is staring after

like a lovesick puppy (◕︵◕)

your friends are all over you about the sweetbread

bc they love it too

but you just say that you forgot you’d brought it with you that day

for some reason, you didn’t want to tell about your encounter with jeongin

when you get home, you savor the sweetbread,

remembering the warmth of jeongin’s smile~

the next friday, you’re outside at the picnic tables during lunch

it’s an absolutely beautiful day, with a light breeze~ (⌒ω⌒)

against the better judgement and fervent suggestions of your friends

you decide that it’s a great idea to get on top of one the tables

and dance

why?

someone had started playing ABBA’s “Dancing Queen”

no one can resist that song

so you’re having the time of your life

just dancing around on the table that your friends have since vacated bc they

a) don’t want to get kicked in the head, and

b) feel quite embarrassed to associate with you while you’re like this

......traitors (๑`^´๑)

and as anyone with an ounce of sense does when dancing to ABBA

you occasionally close your eyes in happiness

and suddenly you’ve stepped into air

your heart lurches and your eyes fly open

and your mind goes completely blank with panic

but you never reach the ground

you’re now surrounded by the smell of leather, metal, and.....

boy

someone had saved you from falling

the arms holding you are strong and well-muscled

and, surprisingly, comfortable

“i’ve got you,” a voice murmurs

you look up into the face of none other than jeongin

(⊙__⊙✿)

welp

you think to yourself “what... i thought he didn’t care about people??”

((nope y/n, he cares about YOU bc you’re the cutest and so lovely))

he smirks down at you, then sets you back down on the ground

“try to be more careful. okay, y/n?” he says, smoothing a wayward piece of your hair, then just walks off

you blush

(this seems to be becoming a common occurrence with jeongin)

and just stand there, dumbfounded

as jeongin saunters away to sit under a tree at the far end of the lawn

it’s a good saunter, and the tight, black skinny jeans only help (⊙ __ ⊙);;;;

your friends rush you, asking if you’re okay and asking what was up with jeongin

you say that you have no idea

......although, that’s not entirely true

since you now have a sneaking suspicion that *gasp* jeongin might have a crush on you?

maybe??

(hopefully!! (ﾟ▽ﾟ｀*)?)

your friends just continue dithering as you stare at jeongin, who’s watching you right back

he winks

later that day as school’s letting out

jeongin comes up to you, leather jacket slung over his shoulder

he’s got on a black t-shirt with the sleeves rolled up a couple times

and ooooooh my

you’d never noticed before

(well, besides during lunch when he caught you)

but yang jeongin has really nice arms

and pecs (⊙‿⊙)

and now you’re staring (oh fuck,,,,, not again)

“uh;;;; hi, jeongin!” you manage to squeak out alkdjfhsldjf

“hey, i was wondering if you wanted a ride”

eXCusE Me wHAt??? ∑(ﾟﾛﾟ〃)

“on the motorcycle. i have an extra helmet, since my sister sometimes rides with me”

jeongin had swung his long legs over the bike, straddling it with his feet still on the ground

“so, the important thing is to stay in line with me. what i mean is that if i lean to one side or the other, you’ve gotta lean with me. otherwise, we’ll fall over and that really wouldn’t be good. just hold on tight to my waist and, sorry i don’t mean to sound rude, but please don’t scream.”

all too soon you find yourself back in the parking lot of your high school

you don’t release your hold on jeongin until after he’s shut off the engine

jeongin takes off his helmet, shaking his hair as usual, and hangs it on a handlebar

then he turns on the seat

but jeongin reaches out and gently removes your helmet to place it on the seat between the two of you

and you rest your palm against his chest, feeling the trembling beat of his heart

he tastes like like elderberry and cinnamon and clove all wrapped into one intoxicating milieu

you could kiss him for days and never tire

after what seems like hours, you break apart

“y/n,” jeongin begins

“oh just shut up and keep kissing me,” you say without hesitation, surprised at your own boldness (again)

Kise doesn’t use his serious/blunt side with you frequently, unless you’re about to do something irrational, whether having a gullible or stubborn moment

Kise won’t understand your stress for school ngl, because he’s pretty neglectful of his own studies

he’d probably tell you that a bad grade or a missing assignment isn’t the end of the world or something like that, and you’d probably get pretty ticked off

Kise would have to learn that some people have different priorities, and when you tell him that you being stressed over school is the same as him losing a game, everything just clicks and he suddenly gets you

so whenever his teasing streak shows up, that’s where your sarcastic side kicks in the most

when he has his hard-headed and stubborn moments (especially regarding basketball), you clock some sense into him and confront him about his troubles with the patience that you have

and Himuro easily does the same for you, being the voice of reason in your irrational moments and trying to ease you in with his words and talk the issues out

he’s very capable of being manipulative and cunning, especially in the courts, so when he spots someone who’s going to take advantage of you and your gullibility, he’s immediately leading you away while giving them a knowing look that spells out, “leave now :)”

jokes aside, both of you are fiercely protective of each other, it’s not even funny

this may have led a small quarrel between the two of you about “who gets to protect who,” and I’m not just talking about the Haizaki incident, but in general

“What were you seriously thinking?! That was unbelievably dangerous!”

“What the hell?! Did you expect me to sit idly by while I watch you get beat up?!”

“That’s not the point! What if they hurt you?!”

“Shuuuut up,” Murasakibara would childishly say, cutting the both of you off, and suddenly, everyone in the room fears for his life despite him being the tallest in the room. “Why are you two even arguing about the same thing, anyways.” and he says it like a statement, not even a question, as if it was the most obvious thing ever

this is a demonstration of when the two of you can become quite stubborn and hard-headed

but again, this quarrel would be a one-time thing, and as soon as the both of you reluctantly concede and accept the fact that the both of you are willing to do the same thing for each other, your relationship grows stronger

stop, you two have this totally cutest thing that only both do as a couple, and this makes Murasakibara gag and Okamura cry tears of pure jealousy:

it first started as a type of teasing from Himuro, where he’d gently poke and boop your mole above the right corner of your mouth (probably another way to keep you quiet), and not wanting to be bested, you instinctively booped back Himuro’s own mole under his right eye

and then it progressively got to the point of him swooping down his head to peck your mole, and then being really smug when you try to reach his face with your lips (but failing miserably)

the man is really taking advantage of your short height LOL

or when you think he’s about to kiss you and he moves his lips to your mole at the last second, just because

and then you catch him off guard by smooching that beauty mark of his (because his head is lowered to your face at these moments)

Himuro takes complete advantage of the fact that he’s closest to Murasakibara and subtly STEALS his snacks to give them to you LOOLLL, and he knows fully well that Murasakibara wouldn’t be that mad at him compared to if other people tried to steal his food (example: Haizaki)

whenever you give those throwaway comments about how you wanted to try something or whenever you agree with Murasakibara that a particular dish looks delicious… he’s cooking it that very same day, no hesitation AND HE WILL LOOK FOR THE BEST RECIPE FOR YOUR TASTE BUDS

master chef only wants to satisfy his precious customer (except you pay in kisses and wholesome affection)

most of the dates involve you stopping by his house and taste-test his food LOL and sometimes you write while you stay in his house (and it adds more of that nice silence the both of you love)

Himuro takes complete advantage of his friendship with Murasakibara: the sequel — he steals Murasakibara’s hair ties occasionally and gives them to you when he notices how your hair bothers you sometimes, especially if you’re trying to concentrate on school assignments

he has a poker face, that’s very canon, but that doesn’t mean he’s incapable of expressing himself; after all, he said it himself that he just has a different way of showing emotions… so when you make a random joke that’s probably not in the right time nor place, he’d slightly turn his face away and cover it up with a hand, but if you look closely, his shoulders are shaking and he’s silently laughing SO HARD (he’s trying hard to be polite, but why the hell do you have to be so funny?!)

whenever you space/zone out, he lets you be, choosing instead to stare at your idle face and it just makes his heart go yay (that is, until you notice his intense stare and then probably say something sarcastic to get him to stop looking at you like that… but then he’d play dumb and go, “look at you like what?”)

again, when you start fiddling, he just observes you with fond amusement, but then he’d verbally say out his observations:

“Ah, (y/n), that’s the 7th time you’re toying with your rings again.”

“?!?!?!??!”

how the hell are you two the beauty couple??? literally your outfits are actual statements, and Himuro’s looks alone stun everyone (the little kids, the middle-aged women, and even Nijimura himself) into admiration

i love you (ain’t that the worst thing you’ve ever heard?)

fav trope/cliche: a friends to lovers au (they’re both normal in this)

The first time Baz sees him, it’s outside his teacher’s classroom. She’s partly blocking the doorway, and her rings clack pleasantly against the doorframe as she taps against it, all while speaking softly to the boy in front of her. Distress cries out in the wrinkle between his brows, his lips turned down slightly in a subconscious pout.

Baz doesn’t catch what she says to make the boy nod solemnly, but his pout is replaced with a shy smile when she bends down to grasp him in a swift hug, before pulling away and turning to look at Baz instead.

“Basil!” She exclaims, and he knows she’s about to spout one of her ideas on him. And as much as Baz loves Ms. Rosemary, sometimes even he can’t stand them.

“Yes, Ms. Rosemary?”

“Basil,” she brings the boy in front of her, and straightens herself off the door frame. “This is Simon Snow. He just moved here, and I think the two of you would be very good friends.”

As it turns out, this was one of Ms. Rosemary’s better ideas, and he made sure to get her a lovely gift during Christmas as a thank you. Simon was exactly what Baz had needed in a best friend: at least as a six-year-old. He would split his scones with Baz secretly during English behind their books, and was killer at dodgeball: both feats that had earned him the title of Baz’s closest and most treasured friend. It was enough for now, and he became a constant in Baz’s childhood from then on. The days had blurred into sleepovers at Baz’s house and Simon watching movies while Baz read in the background, an easy comfort that had come from spending ample amounts of time together.

They were almost 11 now, and Baz couldn’t picture his life without Simon in it, the one thing that stayed constant even when everything else skittered away.

“Baz,” Simon poked his shoulder with the end of his pencil, repeating the action until Baz sighed and looked up.

“What is it? I’m trying to read,” he held up the book as evidence, but there was no true annoyance behind his words.

“That girl won’t stop glaring at you. The one with the purple hair.”

“Penelope Bunce,” Baz supplied immediately, his eyes drifting back to the book.

“Yeah, her. Why is she glaring at you like that?”

“Because I checked out the last copy of this book, and now she has to wait till I finish it to read it herself.”

“Haven’t you read it already?” At Baz’s hum, he continues. “I think you should let her read it, Baz. Really.”

“And why is that?”

“It’s the right thing to do, Baz,” Simon explains. “It’s nice.”

And Baz wants to argue, to say that he isn’t nice, that he never was and never will be. Almost as if Simon took all of the niceness he could’ve had, being nice enough for both of them. Baz wasn’t bitter, of course, he’d have given it to Simon willingly anyway. He’d give Simon anything, really, if he asked, but this was something that Baz refused to dwell on. Simon was his best friend, wasn’t it natural he’d feel this way? So he simply nodded and passed the book to Penelope Bunce, who smiled at Simon, and nodded at Baz appreciatively. And just like that, all because of Simon Snow, he had made another friend.

The fight came out of nowhere. Simon had been getting ready for his date with Agatha--his girlfriend of almost a year--and was holding up hangers to his chest to show Baz, who was trying not to react to any of them. It was a waste of time, anyway, all of them looked stunning on Simon, who’d grown up absolutely gorgeous. His hair, curly and untameable as a child had only worsened with time, and now it lay atop his head in messy golden loops that caught the light wherever he went.

He held up a dark blue shirt, and Baz felt his breath catch. It brought out the darker blues in Simon’s trite blue eyes, creating a subtle shadow. Simon looked at him questioningly, and Baz almost said no, don’t wear that shirt, wear anything else. But Simon was his best friend, and what type of best friend would he be if he didn’t let Simon look his best for a date?

Except Simon frowned, and accused Baz of trying to make him look terrible for the date, which had come out of nowhere and was clearly him lashing out about something entirely unrelated to the shirt.

But Baz stubbornly took the bait, and they’d launched themselves into the first fight they’d had in years. Neither of them liked to fight; they were both too close to each other, and the arguments got more personal, the insults growing increasingly harsher.

Baz had mentioned how much he despised Agatha without meaning to, and it had done nothing but further escalate the situation.

“Maybe we shouldn’t be best friends, then. We don’t match anyway.”

“Simon, you don’t mean that.”

“Stop telling me what I do and don’t mean! I don’t think we fit anymore, Baz.”

Baz caught the underlying statement, just leave.

And so he did.

They hadn’t spoken in months, and in that time Bunce had taken Simon’s side (of course) leaving Baz with his old friends Dev and Niall. Who had both, conveniently, decided to leave the library minutes before Bunce herself came strolling in, making her way to Baz’s table.

“You’re in love with him, aren’t you?”

Baz ignores the lead snapping off his pencil tip and continues writing, forcing his eyes to stay on the page and not wander up to where Bunce stands, undoubtedly with her hands on her hips and her eyes narrowed to slits.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he responds calmly, flipping the page. “Simon’s my friend and so I love him, sure.”

He hears the chair scrape against the floor as Bunce sits down, grabbing the pencil out of his hand before he has a chance to stop her.

“I don’t believe you.”

“Isn’t that your problem, then?”

“Baz,” she says sternly, and he finally meets her gaze.

Suspicion dominates her look, but there’s a small ebb of something else fluttering within. It takes a moment for Baz to recognize it, and he softens his tone when he does. Concern. Small but enough for Baz to remember that he and Penny were friends once, a time before Simon Snow and before they’d become academic rivals.

“What do you want me to say, Bunce? That I’m hopelessly in love with someone I used to call my best friend before I fucked that up and now I’m nothing more than one of his hundred admirers?”

“You’re not,” Bunce lightly rests her hand against his as she gets up, adjusting her bag against her shoulder. “Just another admirer, that is. You’re his best friend, Baz, you always have been.”

“That isn’t enough, is it? It’s too hard,” Baz confesses, tracing a pattern on the table.

It was too hard, watching him fall deeper in love with Agatha and pretending like it didn’t bother him. In another world, maybe, there’s a Baz strong enough to repress his feelings enough to stay Simon’s best friend. But in this one, Simon’s eyes are a tad bit too blue and his smile a smidge too bright for Baz to look away.

“You know what, Baz? Why don’t you try talking to him?”

“I can’t.” And with that he shuffles his things together and drops them in his backpack, leaving before Bunce has the chance to get another word out.

“Baz,” an achingly familiar voice calls his name, and Baz anticipates it before he feels it: Simon’s tell-tale pencil end against his arm. “Can I borrow a piece of paper?”

Baz nods and turns around to hand it over, careful not to look at Simon. He doesn’t want to see the indifference on his face, the subtle hurt at Baz’s random distancing. But Simon clears his throat, and Baz, a constant disappointment to himself, meets his eyes.

They’re carefully shielded, and Baz realized with a start that he could barely read them as well as he used to. Simon smiles at him slightly, whispering a soft ‘thank you’ as Baz nods again, before turning back around.

It isn’t until close to the end of the class until he feels the tap of a pencil again, and a paper being passed to him. He opens it gingerly, tracing a fingertip over the messily written words. Less messy than usual, he notes, and he smiles at the thought of Simon trying to tame his handwriting.

Can we talk? I have scones I’ve missed splitting with someone.

There’s two boxes underneath, and it’s so utterly cute that Baz can’t help but tick “yes” and pass it back to Simon. And the smile on his face when he sees it, Baz thinks, is worth the heartbreak.

He meets Simon on a bench in the park they used to frequent as children, and Simon waves the bag of scones in the air.

Baz sits next to him, accepting half a scone and watching Simon push dirt around with the tip of his shoe.

“You said you wanted to talk?”

“Yeah, I did,” Simon admits, “Listen Baz, I didn’t mean anything I said that day. It was stupid of me and I shouldn’t have any of it.”

Baz nods, repeating the apology. It falls flat even to his ears, and so it comes as no surprise when Simon frowns.

“Baz? What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, Simon.”

“Why didn’t you like it when Agatha and I were together?” Simon asks suddenly, apparently having reached a conclusion.

Why don’t you talk to him?

Baz raises an eyebrow, and a sweet smile graces Simon’s face.

“Say it,” Simon whispers. “Please.”

And Baz looks at the boy in front of him, his constant throughout everything, and thinks of all the times they’d spent in this park together, never quite expecting it to turn out like this.

“I love you, Simon,” he says softly, and Simon grins, pulling Baz to him.

“Me too, Baz. I think I always have.”

Simon kisses him softly, and pulls him into an embrace when they part. And as Baz hugs Simon tighter, he sends another thank you to Ms. Rosemary, who’d brought this gorgeous nightmare of a boy into his life in the first place. Because truly, when he thinks about it, he wouldn’t have it any other way.

so I received these two similar asks in different times. the screenshot one has been in the box for like months ago I’m so sorry anon I wanted to answer it well but I was busy back then so now I’m going to combine these two. anyway let’s get started I have a lot of thoughts about this ask 👀

@footballffbarbiex & anto // amy and anto are meant to be. she will always be his massive supporter. she won’t miss any of his matches but she is just too shy to show up at the stadium. she prefers to support her man in a lowkey way. being the happiest women on earth when he scored but also the saddest when seeing him struggling. however, she chose to not talk about football with anto during weekend, because she knows the only thing he needs is relax and distractions. they will watch nba together. amy has no clues how basketball works but anto is an expert of it, as we all know. he will tell her everything he knows, all the rules and rookies stuffs. amy probably won’t be interested in anything he said but she just loves to see her man being passionate about things he love. she loves him for being who he is.

@avsensio & julian // lexi is too important to julian. she knows this season has been tough for him, so she did what she is good at, using her humor to lighten up her man’s mood, and it works. during the weekend, they lay in bed together watching series and Lexi always can’t stop joking about those characters in the series and julian always looks at her with a big smile on his face. they will walk their dogs together, enjoy the sunset and have a meal at their favorite restaurant. Lexi doesn’t like romantic stuffs, but when it came from julian, you know Lexi will never shut up about it and how lucky and grateful she felt to have Julian as her important one in life.

@fcsonny & sonny // nicole and sonny will be the cutest couple out there who always bring so much sunshine to the people around them. Nicole is sooo good at drawing. She often visits Spurs’ training session, sitting beside the training ground, with a pencil and a notebook in her hands, drawing down the things happened at the training ground. nicole loves trying all kinds of different food, so does sonny. So during weekend, they will go to the restaurant or cafe on their wishing lists, chatting about how dumb his teammates are, and she always know how to cheer up her man, since she is the biggest Spurs’ supporter herself.

@blueforthejerseyandhiseyes & mason // hannah always tries to go to as many matches as she could, because she knows mason will be so happy seeing her coming and her existence will add a lot of energy on him. Hannah loves getting cuddle and mason is always willing to give her a lot of cuddles whenever she is happy or upset. during weekend, they will bake cookies together, putting flour onto each other’s faces, making kitchen into such a mess but they dont care. they both love amusement park so much. screaming out loud when taking roller coaster, laying in each other’s arms on the Ferris wheel, watching the sunset together.

@robertsnowman & tammy // tammy will be that one who can make liz smile so wild because he is just such a silly guy. he knows that liz is always so stressed when watching their matches. he could tell from her face when he came home. he told liz is okay not to watch it but she refused because thats her way to support him. so tammy will hide his emotions whether the result is good or bad, and trying to give her distraction. they will watch tv series, movies and even racing and Motogp since his girl is a huge fan of motorsport. tammy loves asking liz a lot of questions about motorsport, not just because he is kinda interested into it, but also because he just loves seeing her being so passionate when talking about it.

@arrizabalagafc & kepa // kepa might always look angry and hyped on the pitch yelling at the defenders, but we all know he is just a shy adorable bean off the pitch, especially in front of flor. instead of being a chatty person, he’d rather to be a listener, and thats exactly what flor needs. they dont really go out on weekends, since they are both very busy during weekdays but sometimes they will go to concert together, watch their fav bands’ performance and enjoy being nobody among the crowd. kepa is literally not a romantic type that he always forgets things like anniversary but flor truly doesn’t really care about these things either. they share a lot of life values with each other.
