Kay's comments: Incredibly funny! Had me grinning the entire time. AU where Meng Shi was the one who found Wei Ying and took him in, offering him a home in the brothel. So, he grew up alongside Meng Yao and one day, when Jin Guangshan visits the brothel, Wei Ying is not going to stand by and look as his adopted family gets mistreated. Rest in pieces, Jin Guangshan's nuts. Excerpt: Without missing a beat, the young man laden in silks and ornaments and the almost tangible love of every courtesan in the room laden upon him like so much armor looks Sect Leader Jin dead in the eye and says, “A shitty lover, an angry drunk, but most of all an asshole.” Personally, Mingjue could not have asked for more. Wangxian Top Ten Fic Recs

So. I got into MDZS/The Untamed back in February, & I've sort of fallen into a Wangxian black hole from which I am not sure I will ever emerge. Thusly, I've been reading a ton of Wangxian fanfiction lately & have acquired quite a few favorites. Naturally I had to eventually compile a rec list lest I combust with all the barely suppressed love I have for this ship.

Now you lucky people get to reap the benefits of all my hard work because not only have I ranked my top ten, I am also including a bunch of honorable mentions because I'm ridiculous & have no self restraint because I'm such a kind & generous person. Note that the honorable mentions are not ranked & are listed in no particular order.

Fair warning, all of these recs are rated Explicit because I enjoy either a sprinkling or a flood of adult content with my fics. It's far from the focus of many of them, but it's there to varying degrees in each. Also, some of these fics cover some heavy content that may be triggering for some folks, so please do mind the tags & any authors' notes for your own peace of mind.

1. Scars Where They Used to Be by CwythanWind (E, 58,467)

Thoughts: I lost count of how many times I cried in this fic. It was gorgeous in every sense of the word. The characterizations were phenomenal. Wei Ying’s pain was palpable, & the pining was agonizing. Lan Zhan conveying his love through poetry made me sob like a baby twice. The prose was just that beautiful. I can’t recommend this enough. As soon as I finished it I knew it was going to become my favorite Wangxian fic, & nothing has managed to top it yet.

2. Beneath Your Skin by Wrenwolf (E, 147,201)

Thoughts: I was sold on tattoo artist Wei Ying from the word go, haha, but Lan Zhan as an antiques dealer was also surprisingly on point. I go on about characterization a lot in these recs, but I have to tell you that Lan Zhan's here is one of my absolute favorites. I felt like I'd crawled into his skin & was just living there right along with him. And don't get me started on Wei Ying in this fic. I just.. fuck, I cried so much, y'all, & it was incredibly cathartic. Nie Huaisang was my favorite side character in this, & they were an absolute BAMF! You can't go wrong with this one. It's just stunning.

3. Pentimento. by orange_crushed (E, 72,966)

Thoughts: This fic was full of sentiment: regrets, longing, & so, so nostalgic. The love of art was apparent & beautifully on display here, & it added a richness to the whole thing. I cried several times during this from the empathy I had for both Lan Zhan's & Wei Ying's experiences (can you sense a theme with my favorites making me overly emotional? lol). The tone got heavy in places, but it didn't feel graphic or overwhelming at any point for me. The writing was just fantastic, & I've enjoyed a few more of the author's fics since I read this one.

4. i'm gonna drown when you wake up by teenjiism (E, 51,752)

Thoughts: I related to this fic on several levels because both characters are portrayed as neurodivergent in ways that felt very authentic, & I rarely see it done as well as it was here. I have ADHD, & Wei Ying's headspace felt extremely familiar, ha. Lan Zhan & Wei Ying's friendship was so lovely here, too. I adored their easy intimacy & how they were each other's favorite person before Wei Ying even realized he was in love with Lan Zhan. Oh yes, this is another fantastic oblivious Wei Ying/One Brain Cell WWX Strikes Again fic. The pining was perfect, & the overall sweetness of their relationship made this a very floaty/happy reading experience for me, personally.

5. Nothing But Trouble by brooklinegirl (E, 60,318)

Thoughts: Continuing with the theme of One Brain Cell WWX Strikes Again, this was a hilarious & heady fake dating scenario fic. His cluelessness reached new heights in this one, & I about died when he came up with the idea that naturally he & Lan Zhan should practice things like kissing for authenticity's sake. (Oh Wei Ying, you sweet summer child... he kills me; can you tell?) I loved how matter-of-fact Lan Zhan was about the whole thing, too. I laughed a lot during this fic. I even blushed a couple of times, too! Highly enjoyable & a must-read for me.

6. you've ruined my life (by not being mine) by cicer (E, 132,713)

Thoughts: None of the parents in this fic are doing a good job, but hey, they didn't in canon either, in my not-so-humble opinion. It's not what I focused on in the fic, but the tags certainly amused me. I haven't come across many texting fics in MDZS, so this was a pleasant & welcome surprise. The whole fic wasn't done through texting, but their text exchanges were SO CUTE. Lan Zhan texted exactly how I thought he would in this, & it made me laugh every time. The pining was lovely, & when they finally got to see each other in person again in New York I was glued to my computer until I finished the fic. I adored the tone of this one. It was great & just a really fun read.

7. and so my heart beats wildly by lily_winterwood (E, 106,435)

Thoughts: This was one of the most original modern AUs I've seen & featured competitive cultivation that had a Hunger Games meets professional figure-skating competition vibe. It was wild, but it made sense when I read it, I promise. The author was very good at fleshing out their world, & I was fascinated by the concept. Wei Ying once again failed to notice Lan Zhan was in love with him, & his confusion over their interactions never failed to entertain me. I never get tired of their dynamic, y'all, & it was just perfect here. I highly recommend this one.

8. Falling to the Rhythm by Selenay (E, 128,916)

Thoughts: Ever seen So You Think You Can Dance or Strictly Come Dancing? This was basically that but Wangxian! Wei Ying was stunning as a professional dancer being handed a socially awkward, concert violinist Lan Zhan & having to teach him to dance in front of the nation for 12 weeks, & I absolutely loved Lhan Zhan in this. He was precious. The sexual tension during some of the dances was electrifying, & watching them fall in love over the course of the filming of the show was a delight to read.

9. Two Dollar Coffee by marizousbooty (E, 145,286)

Thoughts: I almost fell out of my chair laughing because how do you acquire an accidental sugar daddy?! Well, if you read this fic, you'll find out. One Brain Cell WWX Strikes Again! Yeah, it's one of my favorite AO3 tags, so sue me, lol. The sex was obviously one of the highlights, which I am known to enjoy in a fic (don't judge me, Puritans), but it certainly wasn't the only thing that was well written here. I loved everything about this from beginning to end.

10. things that make it warm by yabakuboi (E, 33,327)

Thoughts: This fic hurt my feelings, not gonna lie. I cried ugly tears at the break up, but I've always had a hard time with reconciliation fics. It was very worth it, however. The way the fic covered their relationship growing & changing over time was very compelling, & a highlight of this for me was Wei Ying's relationship with the Wens, particularly A'Yuan. It was very sweet amongst an ocean of angst, haha. I read this in the span of a couple hours. Just couldn't be torn away. If you're a sucker for angst with a happy ending, then you might want to check this one out.

The Simplest Way Forward by harriet_vane (E, 70,972)

Thoughts: This was so heartwarming I couldn't stop smiling over how adorable it was. Kid fics aren't typically a favorite of mine, but I do enjoy a really good one every now & then. This was one of the best I've read, to be honest. A'Yuan was the sweetest little angel, & he was so cute with Wei Ying spazzing out about every aspect of his care. Lan Zhan being the quiet, responsible source of reason & support was expected but of course always a welcome addition to the mix. Accidental Baby Acquisition isn't a tag I'd seen before, but it's a new favorite when it comes to Wangxian getting to be surprise parents together, haha.

undone (the spreadsheet song) series by spookykingdomstarlight (E, 282,452)

Thoughts: This is a two part series that tells the same story from each love interest’s point of view, a la Rivals by Reiya in the YoI fandom, which is one of my favorites of all time. Similarly, this story is also phenomenally written. I was sucked in immediately & read both fics over the span of like 3 days. I actually read Lan Zhan’s POV fic (the second in the series) in a single day. I was spellbound by the whole thing, couldn’t get enough. I highly recommend this. The characterizations are incredible, & the emotions are so intense I couldn’t help but feel everything right along with each of them as the story progressed.

My only word of caution is that if you have a hard time reading about Wangxian being intimate with people other than each other you might want to skim/skip those sections of the second fic like I had to. The author makes it fairly easy by giving a heads up in the author’s notes at the beginning of each chapter in which that occurs, which I very much appreciated.

Many happy returns. by orange_crushed (E, 25,470)

Thoughts: This fic started with a very serendipitous first meeting between businessman Lan Zhan & Wei Ying, who he mistook for the (non-sexual) escort he'd hired for the evening. I nearly died of mortification right along with poor Lan Zhan when he figured out his mistake. Him confessing this to Wei Ying was painfully awkward & hurt my heart, but fear not! We all know I can't handle a fic without an eventual happy ending, haha. Watching their instant connection develop into something more was such a treat. I loved this fic quite a lot for it being a quicker read for me.

Multiphonics by androkastia (E, 63,705)

Thoughts: Wei Ying was such a lovable disaster in this (as he often is, bless him). Him & Lan Zhan both being in the orchestra was a fun idea, & I loved the author's choice of the harp for Lan Zhan's instrument. I thought it was very different from the usual violin or cello choice I've seen previously but still suited him perfectly. I also loved his overall characterization, down to his fashion sense being tastefully eclectic when his style is usually portrayed as very stuffy & conservative. I really enjoyed this college/university AU, & I've read quite a few of them at this point. So obviously this one stood out.

No Compasses, No Signs by brooklinegirl (E, 36,041)

Thoughts: Ah, finally! A soulmate fic. A Temnurus rec list really wouldn't be complete without at least one. This was a modern AU, which made it especially fun when their soul bond inexplicably manifested as they literally collided with each other on the sidewalk. It was painful watching them fumble for answers to why they suddenly knew things about each other they had no way of knowing only moments before, but the sweet conclusion made it more than worth the temporary angst.

A Haunting Love by Selenay (E, 64,621)

Thoughts: This was another very unique modern with magic AU, & I was nervous because Wei Ying was a ghost haunting Lan Zhan's new house in the quiet little town he moved to in order to write his next novel. Naturally Lan Zhan became ensnared by the mystery surrounding Wei Ying's departure. This had a very romantic feel to it, intensely poetic in a way that I found very alluring. There were even thriller-esque moments towards the end of the story, so it had a bit of everything, all of it equally satisfying to read.

love, in fire and blood by cicer (E, 360,042)

Thoughts: This was an example of a cool MDZS-specific trope I hadn't seen before, & in it Wei Ying, the infamous Yiling Patriarch, was a cultivator who had achieved immortality (aka, he's OP as fuck but in a fun way). The great sects enlisted his help to win the Sunshot Campaign, & what did he demand in return? Lan Zhan's hand in marriage, of course! It was a fantastic slow burn in which poor Lan Zhan suffered the mortifying ordeal of falling in love with his own husband. An amazing & complex plot, chock-full of angsty goodness.

a place to hide (can't find one near) by yiqie (E, 76,091)

Thoughts: I'm giving y'all a heads up first thing that this fic pulled no punches when it came to the heavier subject matter covered in the tags & author's note. Some of the descriptions were fairly graphic, so please take care of yourselves when considering this one. That said, it was a powerful portrayal of someone suffering from mental health issues & the long & often complicated journey of healing. This one also happened to contain a love story so beautiful that I was brought to tears several times by Lan Zhan's patient & loving care for his most important person, nevermind all the times I cried at the sad parts! I found the emotional cost of those very much worth the payoff of their happy ending, which is why I just had to include this one.

Just You, Just Me (Just Us, Just We) by wincechesters (E, 19,777)

Thoughts: Lan Zhan thought his brother made him an appointment at an acupuncturist & was aghast when he discovered it was for a session with a professional cuddler instead! Enter Wei Ying, gratuitous cuddle therapy, & his usual chaotic charm. Poor Lan Zhan being so overwhelmed while also becoming hopelessly besotted made me laugh, bless his fragile little heart. This was an adorable & light-hearted fic that made me want to go back & reread it almost immediately, haha.

my age has never made me wise by idrilka (E, 63,439)

Thoughts: I absolutely loved this. It was pretty CQL (The Untamed) compliant & told the post-canon story of Wei Ying wandering alone as a rogue cultivator after the events of the show. Of course he was pining after his zhiji the entire time, so when he heard gossip that the Chief Cultivator might be married by summer's end it nearly undid him. The angst was excruciating, but at the same time, One Brain Cell WWX Strikes Again fics somehow always manage to be fun at the same time. I've read several post-canon, wandering Wei Ying stories, & this one was particularly good.

so a passing thought about post-canon sangcheng occurred to me & i would like to receive any wise counsel you'd like to give on my thought processes... 🙇‍♂️ they're a little disjointed. disclaimer that i havent read the novel in a while!

im not super convinced by the idea that nhs was able to control eeeeverything that occurred in his Great Revenge--i imagine a lot of it was incidental and opportunistic.

im not clear on whether jiang cheng would figure out that there was a masterminding aspect to the grand finale at the temple at all, bc while i think he's smart! he's also, like, so uninclined to overanalyse things that might uncover something painful for him (see: wwx's behavior post golden core transfer--unless you have to adjust for shixiong admiration/how jc places wwx on a competence pedestal? if wwx says he can handle it he can handle it, until he doesnt handle it so hard he dies. i guess.)

ANYWAY. i dont think jc would be friendly, or maybe he wouldnt like that he Was friendly with nhs if he thought nhs intentionally put jin ling in danger. im not sure if nhs DID! but im thinking in circles about whether jc would think that would have been the case. in my mind he is both endlessly capable of knee-jerk trust recindication (is that a word.) AND trust extended way past reasonable limits. but do you think that would be discussed (with jiang cheng loudly in tears about it in front of many rubbernecking witnesses, mdzs style?) at all? the most i can imagine is jiang cheng yelling obscurely around whether he can trust nie huaisang! clarifying details & inside voices are for the next generation.

i feel like there something to be said about how he trusts wwx with jin ling's safety, too...

this kind of doesn't have a conclusion im just interested in what you think of post canon sangcheng en generale-- it feels like a very different relationship from anything i can imagine in like... cloud recesses era. they're both miserable i think 😀 but actually post canon jiang cheng is doing better than usual than he has been for a long time, in a sense, and nie huaisang is probably thinking he should be doing better.

ok firstable i must address "rescindification" bc it compelled me and apparently the noun form of "rescind" would be "recision" or "rescindment". heeheehee

now my thoughts on the matter:

2019 me wouldn't have agreed with this but remember 4-5 years ago i was only a college sophomore and was less capable of independent thought. since i was more caught up in fandom back then i generally went along with the headcanon that NHS Planned Everything, especially since it gave him more BAMF-ness(??) to, i guess, make up for the fact that he's not a "strong" cultivator. i would Like to delete the fic i wrote about it then but people like it a lot and i'd feel bad just taking it down. it's kinda like my sorrows of young werther (in that goethe regretted his first published work. not that im like goethe ew)

2023 me obviously thinks that's kinda eeehhh and i agree with you more now bc (flips through my memory of Hot Strategist Tips) no plan survives contact with the enemy. nhs wouldn't have been as effective if he had clear strict play-by-plays from the get-go. i think overplanning is what got jgy, because he kept stacking plots to cover his tracks but nothing makes a crime obvious quite like a cover-up

(unrelated question: if you're stark naked in the street, do you cover your ass or your balls? the correct answer is, you cover your face.)

as jgy's narrative foil and winner of that year's political oscars, nhs wouldn't make those exact same mistakes. not to mention, his strength (i think) is in recognizing patterns and doing the least amount of work for maximum effect--the hallmarks of the "lazy" (efficient) genius. plus it's not like he was starved for opportunity (again, bc jgy really was doing too much..... he really could've not gotten caught if he would just focus on the damn infrastructure)

also re:jc yes you're right my man's the king of repression and sublimation lol the whole "who is the REAL mastermind" would be the LEAST of his problems right nyeow!!! he has to help his nephew secure the succession and keep those scheming little rats of jinlintai away from jl, THEN he has to reckon with the fact that his brother is back, which comes with 15+ year old unopened baggage. wouldn't it be funny if he's like, an old retiree before nhs even tells him "yeah it was me lol" and that's finally the thing that kills him LOL sorry

ok that aside let's imagine a scenario where jc gets a whiff of an inkling of an idea that NHS Risked JL's Life (whether he did or not is irrelevant in this case). i'd like to believe that as an older sect leader, like yeah sure emotionally he's stunted like evel kneivel* but at the very least he should have the presence of mind not to scream at a fellow sect leader in the streets about Serious Accusations. (he is not as logical about wwx in canon because that's his big brother and no younger brother is ever logical about his big brother. also he knows wwx well enough that he can trust wwx Wouldn't Endanger Kids)

imo jc would go in circles thinking "but no..... nhs wouldn't do that" then "but that's what i thought about jgy too......." and then working himself up to a froth. this will probably result in the most intense assessing death glares and some shady little quips in public. coin toss whether jc would decide to confront nhs about it privately. at least for as long as jl hasn't fully settled in on the role yet, i highly doubt jc would let his guard down for anyone, even nhs. maybe wwx

postcanon sangcheng...... keep in mind i have shipper goggles on. but they're not getting married babes im sorry if i'm keeping it realistic they both have Duties to fulfill and they live in a Society where they don't have time to...... governance is not just Paperwork, it's their lived reality and not everyone has the privilege of a living family to hold down the fort while one goes off traveling (@ lwj, but he can do whatever he wants forever). not saying that they'll get married to other people and have babies, mind you. especially in societies based on martial strength i think it would be less important to have an Unbroken Bloodline than it is to pass down sect techniques

at the end of it IF there's a romance then they're living off of stolen time, sneaking around during hunts and conferences. and i highly highly doubt it'll be a soft epilogue my loves they are two jagged broken people who have given up too much and gotten back so little. they are not gonna make each other better, but hey the consolation is that they also can't make each other worse! at least they'll have someone else who somewhat Understands what it's like. "miserable but not alone" is a boon if you've lost everything else that mattered

Sometimes, all it takes is one rotten conversation for the world to change tracks. When Jin Zixuan inadvertently insults Jin Guangyao's mother, Jin Guangyao hatches the perfect plan for revenge. He will make Zixuan perfect wife, his precious A-Li, look like the whore of the Yiling Laozu. It works better than expected--and he expects the Yiling Laozu to erupt in fury and draw the sects' anger any moment now.

if nie huaisang had a twin he wouldn't just be one of those twins who occasionally swaps places with their sibling — no, no one would even know that he had a twin.

(no one except for qinghe nie, of course.)

the nie twins would be frighteningly dedicated to keeping up the act so that they would only need to do half the work and attend half the classes/conferences/events/etc.

(notice that i didn't say half the training, since unfortunately da-ge is more than aware that he has two brothers, not one.)

the poor lans at cloud recesses would feel like they're absolutely losing their minds since they know they just saw nie huaisang in class with lan qiren less than five minutes ago, but somehow he's now by the river on the other side of cloud recesses?!

can he teleport? can he just move really fast? can he time-travel? is one of them an illusion or a doppelganger? how can he be in two places at the same time?! no one knows!!

and this of course continues at sect conferences, as well — someone will see nie huaisang sitting by his brother in the meeting hall, but when they leave the room and walk down the hall to go outside, there he is peacefully reading a book out in the gardens! how?!

the only way they can really be differentiated is by their sabers, which are similar but not quite the same — but that's irrelevant, since nie huaisang is never seen carrying a saber anway, so how is anyone (outside the sect) to notice?

they would be absolutely obsessed with making sure that no one outside the sect ever saw them both at the same time, making an effort to disguise the other in ordinary disciple robes, style their hair differently, and even carry a saber any time that the two of them have to be near each other at the same time.

(but only when they have to be near each other — otherwise, they just make an effort to never be seen together.)

both of the twins go to the indoctrination, but one of them goes in disguise.

no one's going to notice if a random little nie disciple goes missing, but they will notice if the nie heir himself disappears. so while one of them stays in place, the other goes exploring...

and when the disastrous night hunt happens, they're able to get help.

(—and maybe nie mingjue himself arrives just in time to wrest that stupid cursed sword away from wei wuxian before he can get any bright ideas, saving us all a lot of heartbreak in the long run...)

Wei Ying felt like his presence at this meeting wasn’t necessary. They were all talking about his lack of a golden core, and what to do about it, like he wasn’t even there. Currently they were discussing if it could be done in his current state, or if they needed to do a cleansing first.

Honestly, Wei Ying didn’t care. This was a dumb idea anyway. It wasn’t going to work. So instead of paying attention he was working on notes for a new talisman instead. It seemed that no one was going to complain since he was THERE, and not disturbing them.

“So, according to this text, the resentful energy will attack the incoming spiritual energy and prevent it from forming a golden core. I’m worried that he still has a high level of resentful energy inside him, even though he doesn’t seem to be actively using it.”

“I wonder if it’s been repressed.”

“He hasn’t been actively cultivating since he’s been here, so it must be left over from before.”

“I think these two are the best options for a cleansing technique. Which one do you think we should do, Lan Wangji?”

Wei Ying felt Lan Zhan gently squeeze his upper thigh, getting his attention. “Wei Ying, which one would you be okay with trying?”

“Which one hurts more?” He asked without looking up from what he was doing.

Lan Zhan sighed, but let it slide. “I would prefer to attempt this one.” He slid one of the techniques back to Wen Qing.

“Do we have an object available to trap and contain the resentful energy?”

“Mn” Lan Zhan pulled out the Stygian Tiger Seal.

“That will definitely do it.”

“Okay, so once the cleansing is complete, and all the resentful energy has been purged, you can go ahead and try whichever of these dual cultivation techniques you two decide upon.”

“It looks like the cultivation world will finally be safe from the evil Yiling Patriarch.” Wei Ying muttered. Letting them all know that he was still there.

“A-Xian, that isn’t why we’re suggesting this.” Yanli gently admonished.

“No, of all people YOU should be the maddest at me. I. KILLED. YOUR. HUSBAND.” Wei Ying shouted as he tossed his calligraphy brush across the table. He was done pretending that this wasn’t completely ridiculous.

Yanli leaned over to Sizhui and whispered something into his ear. Sizhui nodded and left the room quickly. Wei Ying didn’t notice because he was still ranting.

“Do you all hear yourselves? You basically called a whole strategy meeting…for…this?! I’m a monster. I’m a killer. This is ridiculous. Just let the resentful energy kill me and everyone will be happier.”

Wei Ying felt Lan Zhan wrap his arms around him and pull him to his chest as he ranted. He could vaguely hear people trying to talk to him, but it was hard to make out over the sound of screaming inside his head.

It was getting harder to breathe and Wei Ying tried to wiggle out of Lan Zhan’s hold, but he couldn’t manage it. He was just about to seriously consider biting Lan Zhan’s arm when the door to the room slid open.

“I hear from Young Master Lan that my presence was needed, immediately.” Jin Zixuan said as he entered the room.

What?!

What is going on.

I killed him.

I SAW HIM DIE

“No, no no no no. Please no. I’m so sorry. I didn’t MEAN to kill you!” Wei Ying pleaded, wide-eyed and struggling in Lan Zhan’s arms.

“WEI YING, STOP!” Lan Zhan ordered sternly.

Wei Ying lost all his fight and went limp in Lan Zhan’s arms.

This is it.

This is how I finally die.

I deserve it.

I killed so many people.

“Wei Ying, you didn’t kill anyone.” Jin Zixuan tried to console him. “You have been set up.”

Jin Zixuan walked around the table and sat next to Yanli, putting his arm around her.

“I think it’s well past time that I tell all of you what is going on.” Nie Huaisang said as he sat at the table. “There has been a mastermind, in the shadows, who has been orchestrating a complex plot throughout the cultivation world, and he’s been using Wei Ying as a convenient scape goat. I’ve been tracking this plot since before my brother died.”

“My spies told me that there was a plot to ambush Wei Ying before he reached Koi Tower for Jin Ling’s One Month Ceremony. Before I could deal with that I heard that Jin Zixuan had been convinced to go and warn Wei Ying. I immediately dispatched a body double to go in his place and intercepted Jin Zixuan.”

“There had apparently been a separate plot to kill me, and they were going to use the incident to achieve that, and place the blame on Wei Ying.” Jin Zixuan explained. “Nie Huaisang met me on my way, and told me that he sent a double in my place, and asked me to come with him. Once we had gotten word that ‘I’ was killed, it was decided that I would be safer here.” Yanli snuggled in closer to Jin Zixuan for comfort.

“Jin Zixuan was my first acquisition.” Nie Huaisang explained. “Wei Ying, there was a second demonic cultivator in the pass that day. He took control of Wen Ning and used him to kill the Jin Zixuan double. The SAME demonic cultivator was present at the Battle of the Nightless City, and caused you to lose control of your corpses.”

“None of this has been your fault, Wei Ying. You’ve been set up.” Nie Huaisang emphasized.

Everyone was silent for a bit, apparently processing what Nie Huaisang had said.

“No way. I SPOKE to Jin Zixuan. There is NO WAY that wasn’t him. It looked JUST LIKE HIM!” Wei Ying shook his head violently.

“You aren’t the only one who has some trick talismans up their sleeves Wei Ying. I should let you take a look sometime, I think you’d be impressed at what I’ve developed since you decided to go all crazy and try to take on the whole cultivation world yourself.” Nie Huasiang explained smugly.

“Okay, fine, you have magic talismans that make people look like other people and you use them to rescue people. That makes you a hero. But the only reason that there WERE corpses to take over was because I summoned them in the first place. That STILL makes me a villain ” Wei Ying muttered.

“Wei Ying did what he did to help us win the war.” Lan Zhan spoke firmly.

“How can you defend me Lan Zhan? I killed your cultivation partner!”

Everyone seemed shocked by Wei Ying’s outburst.

“Did not.”

“Okay, then explain to me how Sizhui is your son, and his mother died at the Battle of the Nightless City. That was MY fault Lan Zhan.”

“I apologize for the confusion Senior Wei, but I was adopted.” Sizhui said quickly.

Wei Ying just stared at the young Lan, mouth gaping.

“A-Xian, it’s true. Lan Zhan took in the boy because he knew his mother.” Yanli confirmed.

“Okay, so I didn’t kill Lan Zhan’s cultivation partner, but I still killed Sizhui’s mother, along with hundreds if not thousands of other cultivators at the Battle of the Nightless City. I don’t deserve to be saved.”

Lan Zhan couldn’t take it anymore. “I believe it was you, yourself who told me ‘This is my son, I gave birth to him.’”

Wei Ying turned and stared dumbly at Lan Zhan. “What?!”

“Wei Ying, Lan Wangji adopted A-Yuan shortly after you died.” Wen Qing confirmed.

“But…but WHY?!” Wei Ying was shocked.

Sizhui is A-Yuan?

A-Yuan didn’t die?

“Of course I would adopt my husband’s son.” Lan Zhan said matter-of-factly.

“Husband?!” Wei Ying screeched. He looked about the table, confused and hoping someone would help him out.

“Wei Ying.” Lan Zhan turned Wei Ying so he could look at him. “Do you remember what I said about the Lan Sect forehead ribbon?”

“Only a person’s parents or cultivation partner cou-“ Wei Ying gasped and his hand flew up to cover his mouth.

“Mn”

“The Cold Spring Cave.” Wei Ying’s eyes grew big with realization. “Lan Zhaaan, you can’t just MARRY a person and not TELL them!” Wei Ying whined.

Yanli and Jin Zixuan discretely got up from the table and shuffled out of the room, followed closely by Nie Huaisang and Wen Qing.

“You did not seem to understand the meaning of what took place. So I decided not to bring it up.”

Wei Ying looked over at Sizhui, who was staring at a spot on the table, tears rolling down his cheeks.

“Oh, A-Yuan.” Wei Ying called and gestured for him to come over. “I thought you were dead.”

Sizhui slid over and joined his two fathers in an embrace.

“I’m sorry, I don’t remember.” Sizhui whispered.

“It’s okay little radish. You had a rough start. I’m so glad that you’ve been alive and happy these past 13 years.” Wei Ying comforted.

This was all just so much. He hadn’t lost control of Wen Ning and the corpses, but control had been TAKEN from him by another demonic cultivator. Wen Qing, A-Yuan, Jin Zixuan, AND his Shijie were still alive. Not only did Lan Zhan not hate him, but he was his HUSBAND.

Even in his most desperate fantasies Wei Ying hadn’t dreamed up a place quite like this. He never wanted to wake up.

“Wei Ying needs to rest.” Lan Zhan said after a few minutes.

Wei Ying was about to protest, but then he realized that he was shaking, and clinging onto Lan Zhan tightly.

“Wei Ying has had an emotional day.” Lan Zhan explained, as if he understood his confusion as to why he was shaking.

Wei Ying nodded, and before he could try to stand up, Lan Zhan had picked him up, bridal style, walked him to the bed, and set him down gently. Lan Zhan settled down next to the bed and summoned his guqin. He began to play WangXian.

“Mmmmmm, I like this song.” Wei Ying breathed out, just before he fell asleep.

So like, it was a Canon divergent fic where wwx submitted himself to the clans and was ordered to be cleansed of resentful energy in order to... prove he wasn't corrupted? Something like that? For the Wens? And it was ritual dual cultivation. He was sent blindfolded to a room so he couldn't tell who it would be (it was lwj, of course.) Wwx knew it wouldn't exactly work cuz he didn't have a core, but he did it anyway.

I remember the sects locked him in the Gusu caves while they tried to find out how to control him.

Eventually Lan Zhan figures out a loophole where the Phoenix/firebird agrees to hold off until Lan Zhan dies...and then Lan Zhan cultivates immortality as a loophole. I remember it was on AO3 and was complete.
