When he fell off that train, James Buchanan Barnes died. When James Buchanan Barnes’ empty grave was filled with dirt, he was truly gone.
Steve would never see him again. He would never see his perfectly styled—‘but casual,’ Bucky had always reminded him—hair again. He would never stare into those beautiful steel blue eyes again. He would never bundle into Bucky’s warmth during the cold winter nights in Brooklyn in their occasionally shared bed. He would never smell that familiar scent, the pine trees with a hint of sandalwood and something else that was so inherently Bucky.
He would never feel the soft and warm touch of Bucky’s fingers against his chin as he helped Steve shave a spot he’d missed. Not that he grew much facial hair anyway. But he liked pretending that there was something to shave.
These days, he’s positive that he could grow a beard or a mustache if he really wanted to. Product of the Serum.
He doesn’t know how he feels about the Serum anymore. It feels like everything that came from it came with a price.
He can grow a beard now, but he has no hair on any other place on his body beside his head. And that’s literal; the only hair he has—his scalp, his brows, his lashes, his potential beard, and even his ear and nose hair.
He got what he wanted, too. A strong and healthy body. Strength. Speed. Quicker healing.
But the price for that was higher, too. He lost what he actually cared about. Bucky. His home in Brooklyn. Bucky. His peace. Bucky. Occasionally, his morals, too. Like when he was so eager for revenge on HYDRA. And he lost Bucky, too.
He didn’t know why he kissed Peggy. Part of him thinks that he did it because he thought he was expected to. But it wasn’t like he was in front of a crowd with the Star Spangled Singers, so who was he performing for?
Another part of him thought he was doing it because he liked her. Which he did, that wasn’t a complete lie. She was pretty, and smart, and confident. And she seemed to like him enough. And even before the Serum, she liked him more than any other woman had besides his mother. His Ma. He missed her. And he missed Bucky.
Even after his Ma died, he saw her everywhere. He saw her in the 40s, in the nurses who worked with the 107th after he rescued them. He saw her in some of the girls who danced on stage with him, their sparkling eyes and mischievous grins and their soft hands and faces when they were worried about him.
He saw her in the future, too. He saw her in pots of coffee, he saw her in mothers watching their children who sat next to him on the benches at the park as he was sketching the birds, he saw her in himself sometimes, too. In his blond hair, in his sense of right and wrong. Sometimes he felt like he was losing that.
But what seeing her in all of these places taught him was that even after people died and went to Heaven or wherever people go when they die, (Steve wasn’t really sure anymore, not after what he’d seen) they weren’t really gone.
He didn’t know if Heaven was real or not. He was raised Catholic, and even if his Ma couldn’t afford to feed herself some nights, she did make sure he got to go to church. When he was thirteen, he had a phase where he really didn’t want to go.
And his Ma didn’t make him go. He was lucky like that; some kids he knew (or knew of, he didn’t have very many friends during that time of his life) had rebelled against their parents and didn’t want to go, and their parents would beat them as a punishment.
His Ma never hit him. Intentionally, that was. Of course, she’d bumped into him a few times, but she’d never hurt him on purpose.
He knew Bucky’s dad beat him. Not all the time, only when he’d done something his father deemed ‘bad’ enough. Bucky didn’t like to talk about it.
In the future, such things are considered abuse, and people care about it. People can and do go to jail for it, now. Steve was glad.
He ended up going to church again a few weeks after the phase started and inevitably finished. He believed in it enough, and he knew it made his Ma happy.
But even so, it all didn’t seem to stick after he came out of the ice. He didn’t know if there was a God or not, but he guessed he’d find out later, right?
But it wasn’t just his Ma who’d he see in things. He’d see Bucky, too. He’d see Bucky in little boys who were pushing their sisters on the swings at the park, he’d see Bucky in guys who went to comic book stores and other ‘nerdy’ places.
He saw Bucky’s curious mind in Bruce, he saw his stress for the people he cared about in Tony. He saw him in Nat, who cared about him and his health. He saw him in Wanda, who cared and stressed so deeply about the world it occasionally gave her headaches or made her sick. He saw him in Pietro, too, when the kid was still alive. In Pietro’s charm, his flirtatious nature when he talked to the Sokovian girls he saved.
He saw his loyalty in Sam. He saw his marksmanship in Clint. He saw his cleverness in Scott.
He saw his intelligence in Thor. Just like Bucky, Thor was really, really smart. People would assume that he wasn’t due to the fact that he was Asgardian and not from Earth, or because he’s so handsome that even if he was as dumb as a rock it wouldn’t matter.
People in the forties knew Bucky was smart, he was well educated and he talked like he was smart, along with the fact that he knew a lot about a lot of things. He had to be smart to be a sniper.
But people never knew just how smart Bucky was. Bucky was much smarter than Steve ever was, and likely ever would be.
In that awful museum exhibit, they have a few small bits about him and Bucky. Not enough to show how much they meant to each other, and on that Steve was sure. They didn’t even talk about his Ma, besides mentioning that he was born to her. They had messed up her name, too. That made Steve angry. Not even angry, enraged, really.
His Ma was his biggest influence, one of the most important people in his life and not only did they not even care enough to talk about her, but they messed up her name. Her name was Sarah Rogers, not Sara Rogers.
It wasn’t the only error. A popular belief about him was that his birthday was July 4th. That wasn’t true. It’s what he’d said on one of his enlistment forms. Just like he changed his city and state, he’d changed his birthday, too. It would make it easier if he was caught. Nobody would believe that that many Steve Rogers were born on the same day. His real birthday was December 22nd. Nobody alive knew about that. The Howlies didn’t, Peggy didn’t, Commander Phillips didn’t, nobody did. Except for Bucky. And that secret was buried in his empty grave. None of those historians would’ve known it. Those historians sure liked to focus on him and Peggy, though. He didn’t know how he felt about that.
He only kissed her once. Which, he guessed, meant a lot, considering he didn’t kiss very many people.
If anyone asked him about his first kiss, he’d say it was a girl from Brooklyn. He made up a name for her and everything. Charlotte Darlene. He wasn’t sure if Darlene was meant to be a second first name or a last name, but nobody ever asked, so it didn’t matter.
But that was another lie about him. There were a lot of those, he realized.
The truth is that his first kiss wasn’t Charlotte Darlene. It wasn’t a girl from Brooklyn, either. It wasn’t a girl at all.
It was Bucky.
Bucky was a lot of Steve’s firsts. He was his first best friend, his first kiss, his first Coney Island buddy, he was his first housemate, and he was the first person to destroy him, too.
He could remember that kiss. That was the worst part.
They were having a sleepover at Steve’s house. His Ma was at work, she was wouldn’t be home until late. They’d built a pillow fort in front of the couch using it, its cushions, and the sheets off Steve’s bed. It was small, so the two 14 and 15 year old boys were pressed up against each other. They were talking about something stupid, like girls in their class that they liked.
Bucky was talking about how there was this pretty girl, Nancy Laurel, that he had a crush on.
Nancy Laurel was a pretty girl. She was thin, and her family was well off. So was Bucky’s, but then again so was nearly everyone compared to Steve. Nancy’s eyes were a bright blue, like the sky or the ocean on a sunny day. Her skin was pale, but when she blushed it made her cheeks a beautiful pink. Her hair was blonde, always neatly styled in soft and gentle waves or curls.
The air in the small blanket and pillow fort was hot from their laughter, and as they quit laughing for a minute, they just smiled at each other. Steve could remember what Bucky looked like, his cheeks a light pink and his smile wide. His eyes sparkled, and they were so beautiful it made Steve want to ask God to strike him down right then and there.
That was when Bucky quickly leaned in and kissed him. Steve knew he intended it to be a quick peck, but something made Bucky linger there for a minute before he pulled away.
Both boys stared at each other again. But this time, it wasn’t a small pause in conversation filled with bright smiles. It was a sense of fear shared between them. He could see the shame and instant regret on Bucky’s face; the poor boy looked like he was seeing the devil at that very moment. Steve didn’t think he looked like that. All Steve felt was shock, and a hint of fear. That was wrong, and he knew it was wrong. Boys don’t kiss boys, boys kiss girls and fall in love with them and get married and have kids. That was that.
Steve didn’t believe in that anymore, nor did he ever really believe in it back then.
“I’m sorry,” Bucky’s eyes watered. “I’m sorry.” And then he rushed out.
It was a Friday night that night. Bucky and Steve didn’t talk until the following Monday, where Steve hoped he was making it clear that he just wanted to forget about it and pretend it never happened. And Bucky seemed to agree, because the 17 year old boy never brought it up again.
They didn’t have any more sleepovers until the following month after that. It was December when that happened. Steve’s last sleepover as a 16 year old boy was the most memorable one he’d ever had.
Steve found his grave a couple of months after the Battle of New York. He was buried in Brooklyn. His grave was nice enough. He was buried in front of an angel statue. She was a beautiful angel, with her head tilted slightly down as she looked upon the graves. Particularly, upon Bucky’s empty one.
“I see him everywhere,” He told Natasha as they stood on the roof of a HYDRA building they’d just cleared out. She said nothing at that.
“I don’t know what I’m gonna do. When we find him.” He confessed. She looked at him, a knowing look in her eyes.
“You’ll figure it out. I’m guessing you’re not going to hand him to the authorities? Or the government?”
“Hell no.” He huffed out a laugh. “I..I can’t force him to stay. But if he agrees to go back to the states with us, I’ll let him stay with me. Like we did back in the forties.”
“Steve.” She hummed, and he looked at her. She held his gaze as she continued. “I know you want to have him back. But the guy you’re looking for is not the same guy who fell from that train. I know you want him to be, but he will never be that again.” Natasha Romanoff was a good friend. She was a good friend because she was honest. Even if sometimes he didn’t want her to be.
He looked back out towards the woods the building was concealed by. He tried to ignore the stinging in his eyes and the burning in this throat as he answered.
“I know.” There was silence after that.

Hi! Im new to tumblr’s environment and to the writer’s community overall. I wanted to write a Stucky fanfiction I’ve had in mind for a while now, but I’m not quite sure on how to publicize my work or do something of the sort.
While googling ways to do it it brought me on this wonderful, organized blog, but I’ve been confused and lost on what to do, so I’m not really sure how to proceed, and I’d rather avoid doing something embarrassing on my main account.
So my question is, how does publishing work on this blog? If I wanted to publish a fic, would this platform repost it or something? I know i have to publicize it myself obviously, but does it work exactly?
Hi anon! Happy new year! Thanks so much for your ask. Sorry for the delay in answering.
This blog will only reblog content for Stucky Big Bang events, and most events will do the same. We suggest that you join events that you could participate in if you want to be reblogged by a fandom platform. Please see this post for some useful links to other events. A lot of them are quite casual.
Otherwise, tumblr has a useful tagging system. If you tag any variations of #stucky fanfic, #stevebucky fanfiction, or #steve x bucky fanfic in a blog post along with your fic or a link to your fic (if posted on AO3/wattpad/other sites), then readers will find you!
Good luck!

hi kieeer! tell me about some of your favourite stevebucky headcanons 🥰
hi bestie @t4tstevebucky ☺️ oh boy i've accumulated a lot over the past 8 years
i love non-serum disabled steve so much, he's so important to me. also love for him to be a trans man because. he has a hard time not being envious of other trans men who really fill out and get a beard on T since he stays small and can't grow a beard, but he does love his deep voice. bucky makes sure to show how much he loves steve's body tho 💖
disabled steve has ehlers danlos syndrome (a connective tissue disorder) which is a cause for his chronic pain, fatigue, and weak knees. i like to envision him with a cane :')
steve is red-green colorblind, and learned art through graphite and charcoal, so those will always be his favorite, but he also enjoys oil paints. he paints in monochrome shades of blue so he can see it and it's a bit more unique than black and white. in every medium bucky is his muse, and so many of his pieces and practice center on bucky.
with the serum, steve is still trans and the serum amplified what's on the inside and made him more masculine. before, he had been training his voice to be lower, and he didn't have much in the way of breasts so he could get away with hiding his transness (he pretended to be a relative once he went stealth to avoid discrimination from people knowing his past self back in the 40s)
bucky is of course shocked by the transformation, but when steve explains how it happened he's so fucking proud and happy for him.
when bucky was in wakanda steve would visit him when he could, and they slowly started rebuilding their connection. bucky cried with steve once his conditioning with broken, and steve let himself cry too. that was the first time they held each other since the war. from then on that's how they greeted each other and said goodbye when steve would visit. (the hug in infinity war was way too casual to be their first time hugging since way back when)
in one au, their first kiss was in wakanda after crying together. they were so relieved and happy and steve was so overwhelmed by having bucky in his arms again that he held bucky's face and wiped away his tears and they just gazed at each other for a beat, then bucky surged forward and kissed steve. steve was so shocked that this was really happening, but quickly kissed back. he cried the whole time, and they just held each other for a while afterwards.
i could go on forever but i need to get back to work lmao. i love these two so much 💖💖

I feel like one of the reasons why Sam and Bucky work with each other so well as a duo in is the fact that they are at the same (or almost the same) level of importance when it comes to the MCU. They are in a similar position as characters.
Let me explain...
----- ------- -----
Before tfatws Sam Wilson was a character from the background. He is important for the overall storyline, but he’s not at the front of any movie. Even in ca:tws he was less relevant to the plot than e.g. Natasha. He’s necessary and there is a significant reason he’s there at all, but at the end of the day it’s a Steve Rogers’ movie. Not Sam’s. And even if calling Sam a sidekick is most of the time insulting - at least within the MCU - he kind of is a sidekick. That’s the role he has in the narrative. There’s a main hero (Steve) and a guy who follows his lead to help (Sam). Of course Sam has his own life and issues that have nothing to do with Steve, but we don’t even know them at this point. And here we’re looking at Sam through the lense of the Captain America movies.
Almost every scene with Sam before tfatws was connected to Steve. Sam joined the fight in ca:tws to help Steve. He was in AoU, because Steve invited him to Stark’s party. He was in Civil War, because Steve asked him to join the Avengers and he wanted to help Steve with finding Bucky... Similarly, Sam had his own opinions in Civil War, but we only hear them when it’s relevant to Steve’s story. (When Sam and Rhodey argue about the Accords they stand behind Steve, because the scene is about him making the decision.)  Even in Ant-Man, where there is no Steve at all, Sam mentions him after Scott left. Etc, etc. You get the picture.
And the same goes for Bucky.
We only see him in ca:tfa where his story is intertwined with Steve’s. When Steve gets his ass kicked before he got the serum. Or when they go to the Expo. Or when they fight during the war. Even when Bucky is saved by Steve it’s less about him being finally free and more about Steve finding his friend again. In ca:tws their meeting is told mostly from Steve’s perspective. It’s a film about Steve facing the Winter Soldier not the other way round. And later viewers don’t see Bucky’s life as a fugative untill the moment he becomes important to Steve’s storyline again in Civil War. And so on and so forth. It goes like that basically from Bucky’s first appearance in the MCU to the last scenes of Endgame.
When Steve and Bucky are fighting on the same side Bucky’s role could also be described as: “a sidekick”. Just like Sam’s.
----- ------- -----
And I honestly believe that this is the reason why pairing Sam and Bucky together makes so much sense. Even if you put aside the obvious chemistry between the characters and their actors it just works for them to join forces in multiple scenes.
Both of them walked in Steve’s shadow before they got their own show. Not because they’re less interesting as characters or because Steve’s storyline is better, but because Steve is one of the main heroes in the entire MCU while Sam and Bucky were always orbiting around him in a way. And we, as the viewers, learnt very little about them outside of the stuff that was important for their relationships with Cap.
Why do we know about Sam losing Riley? Because Steve also lost someone who fell to their death. Why do we see Bucky killing Stark’s parents? Because it’s a movie about Steve’s conflict with Tony (mostly) and it’s just one of many things that makes the conflict worse. I’m not implying it’s unfair to the characters or something (even though I’d love to see them having more sceentime in general)... It’s just the role they serve in a story, because someone has to be in that position for the narrative to flow. You cannot make every character “the main one”. That wouldn’t really work.
----- ------- -----
But then... When Sam and Bucky are together we suddenly see much more about both of them outside of their connection with Steve. It’s almost like destiny how they always end up in close proximity. They seem to naturally gravitate towards each other ever since they’ve met. And it looks like taking them away from a big, important character (Steve) makes them shine brighter. Most of the little moments they shared became iconic at some point when they were just allowed to exist together.
And again... I’m not saying that I don’t enjoy seeing their interactions with Steve, because I do. Especially Sam’s. But it very often feels like they interact with each other because it’s important for the progression of the plot. When Steve talks with Sam it’s often about their next mission, or how Sam helps him with something, or to show that Steve has difficulties with adjusting to the modern world. And when Steve talks with Bucky (at least after ca:tfa) I always feel like there should be a narrator’s voice talking over a scene, telling me: “see? they were friends in the past, before the war... this is important! pay attention”.
Meanwhile, when Sam and Bucky interact, some scenes just... happen for no purpose. Like they interact, because they want to, not because the script told them to. There’s absolutely no plot-related reason for showing Sam and Bucky sitting in that tiny car in Germany. Or for showing them standing together in Infinity War when Thanos attacks.
What the two of them have is completely different from what they had with Steve in the past.
----- ------- -----
To be honest, it always bothered me a little how Steve never really did anything for Sam (freeing him from prison where Sam landed for helping Steve doesn’t count). It’s always Sam making Steve feel better and standing by his side. So it’s a very glaring contrast, when we got to see a whole separate montage where Bucky visits Sam and helps him fix the boat that was important to his family. Or when he casually throws a shield with him for practice, asks Sam if he’s okay, and brings him a new super-hero suit even though Sam never even asked for these favours or suggested that he needs Bucky’s help.
And I know that some people won’t like what I’m about to say, but Steve and Bucky really don’t act like they are particularly close to each other most of the time (especially after their first movie). I believe that they were friends before everything went to shit, but after ca:tws? Not really. They cling to that label, because of their shared story and because Steve cannot let go of the past, but they just... don’t act like they are friends anymore. It’s like they both changed too much and don’t know how to deal with that. So they don’t. It’s like Steve is only attached to some past version of Bucky that no longer exists and the new Bucky doesn’t fully match his expectations. Sam on the other hand has no expectations at all. He builds his relationship with Bucky from the fresh foundations. The creators don’t need to bring back some shared memories from 70 years ago to prove that these two have a strong connection. They just show them doing stuff together. The argument about The Big Three? Petty revange over a car seat? Discussing music tastes? Having “sleepovers” and giving each other slightly mean, but harmless nicknames? Discussing mental health? Having staring contests? Watching goddamn sunsets? That’s what people who are close to each other do.
And that’s why these two simply... work.
It’s not just implied or explained in a flashback. “Look, viewer. They are friends. I know they don’t act like they are, but trust me. They went for a dinner a decade ago... offscreen.” Sam and Bucky even refused to call themselves friends! They’re a couple of guys (allegedly). And yet I still know they like each other very much from the way they interact, speak about each other, or look at each other.
And I really think that one of the main reason’s why it works like that is because they’re both equally crucial (or irrelevant at times) for the story. Both are just as (un)necessary for the plot to move on. Sometimes they are very important and sometimes the plot would easily work without them. ca:tws could’ve happen without Sam. Civil War could’ve technically happen without Bucky if they put more emphasis on the Accords. There were both certainly unnecessary in Infinity War or Endgame. But there’s no way the events in tfatws would’ve happen without both of them being there together. Sam might’ve never taken the shield and become Captain America if it wasn’t for Bucky. Bucky would’ve spent countless years trying and failing to make amends and never finding peace if it wasn’t for Sam. The fandom likes to focus on only Bucky, but you wouldn’t get this much content about him if there was no Sam to share the story with him.
Because they just fit together perfectly.
----- ------- -----
Last disclaimer (because I really don’t want people to get the wrong impression): I actually like Steve. And I like Samsteve (romantically or platonically). Platonic Stevebucky is alright too. But it just kind of... pales in comparison when you see what Sam and Bucky have. Most MCU relationships pale in comparison if I’m being honest.

Honeysuckles Growing on the Window Sill (Bloom!Verse Series)
I should expect my word count to always multiply at this point lol. But welcome to post-poly!! We've got five chapters (22k) worth of ~feelings~ Oh, and there will be (commissioned) fanart in the last chapter, the nsft version on AO3 <3
Pairing: SteveBucky/Loki Rating: Explicit Word/Chapter count: 5,408 (1/5) Tags: Modern AU, Married Steve/Bucky, BDSM, Polyamory, Friends to Lovers, Mutual Pining, Intimacy (see full list of kink/non smut tags on AO3)
🍯🌼 Summary 🍯🌼
Loki couldn't possibly be falling for a married couple, they just couldn't. They agreed to a casual, kink-focused threesome, and nothing more. But Steve hadn’t shown any interest in kissing them until now, five months after happily indulging his husband who brought up the idea of a threesome. They all consented to it, but the energy of the room felt different than before, like if a plant had sprouted from a seed, growing until the leaves were dangling off of the window sill.
Regret was brewing in their chest the moment they confessed to Steve. Would their feelings be returned? Or rejected? It would hurt to see the couple at their club again if they weren't wanted anymore, but would Bucky still feel comfortable around them to even consider returning?
They really shouldn’t have stopped by the couple's house to the begin with. It wouldn’t come as a surprise to them if Steve asked them to leave, or—
“Loki.”
They freeze, their shoulders tensing as they wait for what Steve is about to say, unable to look him in the eyes.
“We’re both interested in you too.”

Weekly Recap | June 14th-20th 2021
Tumblr media
Time flies by! I just realized July 4th is coming quickly, and with it, my Steve Rogers’ Birthday fic rec!!! Gotta start working on that sometime soon 😅
Complete
💙 Love Me Tender Like What Keeps You Well by thiccbuckybarnes / @thiccbuckybarnesfic (A/B/O, Victorian AU | 24K | Explicit): The estate was full to the brim with giggling ladies in tailored dresses and gentlemen in dress shirts and narrow jackets with velvet collars. The ballroom was lively with chatter, music, and dance, and the rest of his house had some form of merriment and gossip in one corner or another. - - Steve Rogers, an alpha, widow, retired army captain, and master of the Allaheim estate, is happy to welcome new neighbors next to his manor in his pleasant little village of York. He hopes to gain new friends to brighten up his lonely life, and ends up getting much more than he bargained for when he meets the son of his new neighbor, James. (Part 1 of Betrothed & Bewildered)
💙 My Voice is Back Home While I'm in Hell by thiccbuckybarnes/ @thiccbuckybarnesfic (A/B/O, Victorian AU | 15K | Mature): James thought it absolutely preposterous that his father had decided to completely up-root the family and move west to the smallest possible village known to mankind. (Part 2 of Betrothed & Bewildered)
and i'll keep burnin' this way by thiccbuckybarnes/ @thiccbuckybarnesfic (Modern AU, Shrinkyclinks | 3,6K | Teen): Or, the one where Bucky is a disabled veteran with scrambled-egg brains and an inability to make polite conversation with cute boys but Steve doesn’t mind one bit.
If You Were a Vegetable, You'd Be a Cute-cumber by thiccbuckybarnes/ @thiccbuckybarnesfic (Modern AU, Bon Appetit Test Kitchen | 3,8K | Teen): “This dish is a little cheesy, but it still tastes grate,” Bucky says with a completely straight face; his looks made even more menacing by the permanent murder-face he naturally has, but then you have to subtract from the Scary because of the yellow polka dot apron he has around his neck and tied around his waist, and then there is always the bright blue scrunchy tying half of his hair into a messy bun at the top of his head. Steve tries to cover his mouth casually with one hand to suppress a laugh, and looks down at the sheet of paper in his other hand that contains the recipe they should be following. He squints at it, like he’s trying to figure something important out, because if Bucky sees him laugh, his bad puns are only going to get worse, much to the thrill of their viewers.
WIP
💙 Chemistry by deadto27/ @deadto27 (Modern AU | 3/? | 11K | Explicit): Bucky Barnes just wanted a good one-night stand. It didn’t even have to be great, though he’d had high hopes hot Steve would be fantastic. He’s hugely disappointed. And Steve seems to really like him, so now he’s stuck trying to let him down gently and hoping he never sees him again. Of course, the universe has other plans.
the planets bend between us by ransomdrysdale (Canon Divergent, TVA Agent Bucky | 1/? | 1K | Teen): Broke: SteveBucky in the Sacred Timeline. Woke: SteveBucky AU. Bespoke: Steve Rogers is one of the Time Variance Authority's repeat offenders, and Agent Bucky Barnes is the TVA agent assigned to track down and apprehend Steve, and reset whatever violation he always seems to create. The thing is, Bucky has no idea why he keeps getting this assignment, nor does he realise how tangled he (and his heart) is about to become with this damned stubborn variant, especially when, despite several resets, Steve starts remembering Bucky every time they meet again. Featuring two idiots in a forest of pine who, despite the odds and no matter the timeline, keep finding their way back to each other. Also starring the Howling Commandos as Bucky's TVA team and colleagues, as well as a whole host of familiar faces to come.
Re-Read
💙 Somewhere, Under Your Skin by thiccbuckybarnes/ @thiccbuckybarnesfic (Modern AU | 16K | Explicit): Bucky Barnes treats himself to a one-night stand after having a very bad no good day. The sex is good–great, even. Might be the best sex of his life. But Bucky wouldn’t have slept with the guy if he had known that he was going to continuously run into him every day for the next fucking month.

We love a couple with clear communication and consent. SteveBucky r the couple who’d still say “you want a kiss?” after being married 3 years and ask if everything is okay several times through sex 🥺💕 it’s the soft things that matter okay?
still going through my old asks- my requests are currently closed
We do. We really do!
They do this pretty much all of the time (except with Certain Times where things are so hot and heavy, moving so quickly that they're both just hot messes), through sex, through cuddling, e v e r y t h i n g.
But especially in public, y’know?
They grew up in one hell of a time for any type of queer and/or non-white person, a time when they couldn't do anything in public ever.
So, of course, in the 21st century when they have the freedom to participate in PDA they do get their kicks out of it. Sometimes. Not before asking though. And of course, no matter the reason, if one party says no than it doesn't happen. Period.
When it does happen though, some hand holding or cheek kissing, it's not before whispering to the other, "hold my hand?" or if it's been a cuddly day already - full of these kinds of questions prior and the answer has been an overwhelming yes each and every time - maybe even just a tap over the back of the hand. Prompting the other to flip over their hand and intertwine their fingers.
Always asking before an arm wraps around a waist. Before a hand slips into a back pocket. Before a kiss. A hug. Anything.
And a lot of time it's casual, genuine softness with these questions, but sometimes it also just turns into jokes. Like:
Genuine softness
"Can I spoon you?" Steve, whilst padding up behind Bucky as he's cooking their breakfast, still heavy and clumsy with sleep tugging at him. Sleep pants sitting awkwardly and low on his thin waist. Eggs are sizzling, toast is cooking in the toaster, and the coffee pot is burbling happily.
"Mmm, please?" Bucky would look over his shoulder, puppy dog eyes fully out to play. His hair swept lazily back into a true messy bun, low on the nape of his neck where Steve will inevitably brush it out of the way to pepper his shoulder with quick, gentle kisses and butterfly kisses alike.
"Arms around your waist?"
"Mmm-hmm," Bucky hums, leaning back into the blonde already. Tilting his head back and up, angling for a kiss.
Softness Turned Jokey
"Can I spoon you?" Steve, whilst padding up behind Bucky as he's cooking their breakfast, still heavy and clumsy with sleep tugging at him. Sleep pants sitting awkwardly and low on his thin waist. Eggs are sizzling, toast is cooking in the toaster, and the coffee pot is burbling happily.
"Yeah, because unfortunately the first thing I wanna feel in the morning is that thing-" Bucky turns around, pointing the spatula he's brandishing like a sword at his crotch. Inevitably, thanks to the serum, Steve's got morning wood. He just woke up, okay? "Against my ass. Real romantic."
Steve cracks up, sleepiness exiting promptly. To anyone else, Bucky would be perfectly deadpan but he can't hide his little-shit-ness from Steve. Hasn't been able to since he was about 10.
Steve may or may not slide up to him, turn him around and hold him hostage in his arms, squeezing him so he's got to feel all of him against his ass while Bucky tries and fails to hold in his laughter. Threatening to put his metal hand in ice cold water and then put it down his pants between side busting laughter. You'd never know if he does or not though... not unless you were in the apartment above or below them and could hear the giggle-shrieking.
Thank you for this! <3

pls talk to me about sam/riley!! canon, au, idc! give me all u got 😤😤
FUCK YEAAAAAAAAA OMG literally one of my favorite ships in the entire mcu and they barely exist 😭😭😭
ok so in terms of like canon stuff i feel like riley and sam had the closest thing u could to a meet cute in the literal army and i see their relationship as like very similar to daveklaus??? i think it definitely like in precatws i see them as meeting on base, maybe even not knowing each other before they got assigned to the project and got their wings etc
there’s a lot of potential for a slow burn there even as just a platonic relationship and tbh given the popularity of media like 1917, dunkirk, top gun, and that rn (which….. the modern stuff is more HMMMM but i mean the interest is there???) n marvels propaganda deal with the us military i don’t know WHY they HAVENT greenlit some sort of d+ mini series giving us a samriley prequel ??? at least a short 😭 but idk maybe they’ll actually give us some sams past crumbs in cap 4?????
in aus though i like to hc riley and sam as having the same hometown, i love the idea of riley being a quintessential southern boy with the drawl and the slang, i also heavily borrow from just say you do’s version of riley in which he has a dry sense of humor and takes no shit just like sam!! i picture him as “sassy” and over the top in the same way as like JVN lol
also i think he and sam have the best fashion sense out of anyone in the group except maybe nat when she’s not dressing super comfy casual (we all know steve and bucky are dead last on that one LMAOOO) bc riley comes from a working class family/started working himself at a really young age and so now he likes to be super deliberate about his sense of style/presentation instead of just whatever he got handed down from neighbors or church donations etc and that was a HUGE part of accepting his sexuality + gender identity (he/they riley u will always be famous)
i also borrow some elements of like adam parrish’s backstory 🤡 in that i see riley’s parents as negligent at best and ab*sive at worst, making the wilsons his sort of pseudo-family/safe space even before he and sam get together whether that’s bc they’re childhood besties in aus or bc they accept sam’s closest comrade into their fold (i cant remember if sam lost his parents before he went into the service so don’t come for me anyone) but yeah like in non canon universes i see their story as highly similar to stevebuckys bc they’re foils duh except ig riley would be closer to comics bucky than mcu bucky w his parents
it’s weird bc i used to exclusively ship stevebucky and then samriley completely separate. since i became open to the idea of multi shipping, i now ship in a different order/way??
like for au’s i still follow the two distinctive ships, meaning if i’m writing stevebucky i’ll usually have established samriley or single sam. however if i’m writing sambucky it’s probably going to be past!samsteve and/or stevebucky as well if not just samstevebucky (the most superior of all ships) 😌 like i might mention riley being sam’s ex before he got together with steve (if i’m including him and steve as a couple and not just friends) or just gets w bucky but the focus is way less on riley’s impact on sam’s dating history than like steve if that makes sense which is just interesting to me?? it’s also a roulette wheel of whether or not i decide to throw in sammisty (my beloved) bc sometimes i like to write bi sam and other times i like to write gay sam
sidenote i see peggy and steve and nat absolutely bi, always, angie as 100% a lesbian, misty and sam as bi4bi, but for sam and bucky i could see them as either bi or gay (although i typically tend to write bucky as either just gay or at most bi-curious but always in relationships with mlm)
i feel like i write more samriley in complete au’s than in canon compliant fics which is odd haha
maybe bc in canon compliant fics, if samriley exists i see them as a monogamous partnership, but if sam is with someone else/poly i typically see it like riley d*ed bc personally i just don’t see them breaking up?? they’re like either that couple u know that’s been together since they were 14 and you never see them without each other OR they’re exactly the same but they actually got married in their early 20s. i say, having explicitly written their divorce before
also idk why but i feel like in my head w poly!sam steve and/or bucky (or misty) are cool w him having paramours and metamours and everything even if they aren’t poly themselves but riley is strictly a one man guy and has no interest in anything outside a monogamous mlm relationship. he’s also demi and a hopeless romantic!
when i write samriley + steve and bucky i see riley as being able to relate to bucky better bc i follow the general fandom hc that riley is also disabled, but he’s somewhat closer w steve bc of sam and bucky’s initial “feud” when riley was still distrustful of bucky and 100% in sam’s corner, meaning he and bucky have a similar dynamic to sam and bucky where they like to banter and antagonize one another but he and steve are more chill and friendly when they talk like he and sam are (although they aren’t above ribbing at each other and referencing embarrassing inside jokes)
hngngngngnh h OH also he and sarah are like best friends bc they LOVE to gang up on sam and 100% would die for sam but like given the choice they would unionize to embarrass him at the drop of a hat

Love when I’m just casually listening to a song and all I can think about is how much it resonates with stevebucky

can you write about stevebucky at dinner with steves parents and steve going “daddy can you pass the salt” and his dad and bucky reach for the salt at he same time
pal
oh boy. oh boy oh boy. CAN I?
okay idk what would be more delicious bucky being steve's age or bucky being older. i've been obsessed with age difference lately, like barely legal steve and bucky being casually middle aged. but also bucky being a dumbass kid as well, oof, i love that idea too.
okay but anyway The Vibe here is Fantastic. steve knows exactly what he did and he did it on purpose. the way that bucky and joseph make eye contact is phenomenal. in that instant, bucky is Perceived and he is definitely going to spank steve later. joseph is Horrified and sarah is mortified and about to split her seams laughing. oh boy.
steve just plucks the salt shaker from bucky and joseph's hands and says "thanks" and acts like nothing happened.
he gets spanked hard later, dw

i tend to write bucky in fics as the more easily tactile one in the relationship— which to an extent i stand by as being true because he grew up in a big, close-knit family and although sarah absolutely loved steve just as much, her being at work so often and dying when he was younger (not to mention him being so sickly considering how too much soft touch was actually seen by some doctors as detrimental to children’s health) definitely impacted how often steve was able to be shown affection— but watching clips of steve and bucky together always makes me notice the differences in how they touch each other. steve initiates touch with bucky just as often, but in a different way. barring certain situations where a specific sort of touch is necessary (like at azzano or siberia when steve has to quite literally haul bucky out because of his injuries or in bucky’s apartment during civil war where he kinda …. throws steve out the window as a distraction) steve and bucky both have individual habits they lean towards. where steve tends to reach out. steve tends to use his hands to tap or clasp
bucky tends to pull steve into his embraces. he throws his arm around steve to knock him into his side, comes up from behind and shoves him in the shoulder to get his attention. he squeezes into their hugs so hard it takes steve by surprise, and when he’s trying to say something important that he wants to make sure will sink in, he grips the side of steve’s neck. he rubs circles into the small of steve’s back even when everyone is watching them hug. the touches are all so confident and familiar, so second nature that it’s clear they’ve known each other all their lives. it’s clear that bucky likes being able to manhandle him and be gentle all at once. there aren’t many times in the mcu where steve is touched in a way that’s not violent, work-related, or unwanted (see: the british boob grab, the surprise kisses, “you know damn well why, back off!”) but most of the times he is touched and wants it, it’s from bucky. it’s from someone who has loved and been touching him since he was small. it’s from someone who is doing their best to know him again.
steve is a little more hesitant touching people, i think, probably in part for the reasons i mentioned above in relationship to his mom and not having many people in his personal bubble growing up. but, i think there’s more to it than that. he didn’t touch anyone for a very long time (and no i do not just mean that as a sex thing). with both bucky and his mom gone along with everyone else he knew before/during the war, who was left for him to touch during those years before he got close with sam and nat, and then got bucky back? who was there to touch him in a way he wanted? no one touched him in the ice. even after he woke up, there was no one to touch him in a manner that wasn’t clinical or meant to draw out a response— but, i’ll get into touch starvation with both of them and all the complicated feelings for bucky with his hands post-hydra another day. back to the way steve touches bucky.
where bucky tends to pull in, steve tends to reach out. gentle taps are practically his brand. to bucky’s back when they hug, to his cheek when seeing him for the first time after thinking he was dead, to his elbow while they walk, to his shoulder whenever he’s making a sly remark or joke. he doesn’t like letting go. he slides his hands from bucky’s back across his shoulders or down his arm so it lasts longer. he gives him long looks and tight smiles. he doesn’t ask for more or hold on after, but i think that’s because steve tries to make sure that he’s not taking too much— of someone’s time, their emotions, their touch. he takes what he’s given and moves forward. all of the touch and affection he’s known before has always been fleeting, with bucky especially. bucky is both a constant in his life and something that’s been repeatedly taken away. steve touches bucky like he’s something precious, because after so much time forced apart, he knows that he is.
