Hey hey,

how exactly did Karai become mutated into a turtle in your version of tmnt?

Well, I haven’t really figured it all out 100% yet, but I definitely have gotten the main ideas down.

So I was kinda thinking she ends up getting mutated a little later on in the story, so maybe like a little after the Turtles get back from their space adventure or something like that.

She ends up getting mutated as like, collateral damage or something adjacent, but I definitely wanted it to be a sort of a breaking point between her and Shredder’s relationship. I’ve planned that it gets kicked off as the Shredder finds out about Karai’s relationship with Leo and so he uses her as a hostage against Splinter and the Turtles.

I think that too will help flesh out just how toxic The Shredder is. Like he has always seen Karai as a tool, and nothing more. Whereas Karai sees him as a somewhat obnoxious father, but still a father.

I’m not exactly sure where the mutagen would come in (I’m sure I’ll figure something out) but I decided that to help make sure that she is still 100% not related to the turtles, the turtle's DNA she gets merged with is actually her pet’s.

I thought it’d be kinda cute if during the time where Karai and Leo aren’t together, she gets a little pet turtle to remind her of him (since she still loves him). Most likely I figure she gets pulled out of her room while she’s playing with her little turtle and so even though Leo probably tries to save her, he doesn’t touch her so it’s only her little turtle’s DNA not Leo’s.

I think for the aftermath, there’s no way they’re all getting out of a situation like that unscathed—Karai being no exception—which also leaves sometime afterwards for them to be healing while she’s attempting to mentally heal from the fact that her father just used her as a hostage, tried to kill her and now she’s a mutant turtle.

While the turtles are pretty cool with the way they look, Karai would be pretty uncomfortable with such a drastic change like that, so I definitely wanna capitalize on that angst and growth between Leo and Karai as a couple, Leo helping her to accept who she is now.

I’ve gone back and forth on whether or not I want her to change back, and I ultimately decided no. Donnie basically explains that he is a robotics guy, not a geneticist and so he’s worried that tampering with something so complex like that would probably only cause more harm.

Quite a few people liked my Adult Ghost/ Shade Lord mortal form so here's some flats and some ref sketches I made for myself. I also need to give Hollow and Hornet new designs, but at least the growth chart is done.

Some Extra notes under the cut

After Absorbing the radiance, poor Ghost had a lot of soul and their body started growing pretty quick as a response. While it wasn't over night, it only took maybe 6 months for them to molt into adult form. The change had other consequences with mobility as they had to get used to getting taller and taller and the perks and drawbacks of that.

Ghost's Adult outfit is a travel outfit and is a mix of preference and need. The back is open to allow the void tendrils to freely be used without damaging the fabric, and the cape opens up for the same reason. Hornet and Ghost designed the outfit together once they were sure that Ghost was finally done growing and had a handle of how their body reacted to things. The other outfits were a mix of friends and travellers trying to find comfortable wear for the rapidly growing Ghost.

They will go full Shade Lord if under enough duress, both physical and emotional. They have to summon the void and their dead siblings out of the abyss in order to get the size and full power, but they still pack a punch by themselves.

They grew heels because they wanted to be as tall as Hollow. They almost made it, lol.

Some notes for their growth First Major molt: addition of proper hands and fingers, and is definitely welcomed. Horns are thicker, more resembling their two siblings now. They're just a bit shorter than Hornet. Second Major Molt: Taller now, and their horns start to take a more unique shape. The heels also start to form Third Major Molt: Their least favourite as they just just constantly growing and it was suffering.tm. The feet are curling up, the second set of horns are growing, they literally have growing pains. This one was Pain.tm Final Major Molt: Sweet relief as they finally get to their adult form and stay there. (There is a secret molt, and that's eventually they will get butterfly wings!)

One thing that I think I want to establish in my Transformers AU is that literally all the techno-organics are just neurodivergent queer kids that are positively unhinged.

Sam is reclusive, eccentric and introverted, coming across as aloof and withdrawn. Yet he's compassionate and reliable, possessing all the true qualities of a leader- so much so that when he finally does start to see his merits, he's desperate to maintain those images to the point of overburdening himself constantly. He constantly builds walls between himself and his emotions, as he struggles with feeling and confronting them.

Jackson is passionate and precocious to the point of recklessness, always rushing into danger headfirst and acting without thinking of the consequences. However, as a scientist, he always learns from his mistakes, and his compassion and willingness to help changes those around him for the better. He's artistic, curious, cunning and ambitious- one who gets themselves into trouble often has to learn to get themselves out, after all. The problem is that years of loneliness and social ostracization have made him too self-reliant, to the point where he struggles with accepting love.

Sari, like Jackson and Sam, always seems to have her head in the clouds. She's altruistic, competitive and brave, acting like the 'youngest' of the group- she's able to adopt new skills quickly, determine other's problems, and has a passion for a variety of art mediums. She doesn't allow other people to diminish her skills or contributions, and grows frustrated when she sees Jackson and Sam take this kind of mistreatment lying down- she's essentially the emotional glue of the team, encouraging the rest of the team to be more honest with themselves and to more authentically express and communicate their true emotions and desires.

Noah (who is considerably younger in this AU- around his teens more specifically) is confident, impatient and blunt with quite the temper, never placing faith in other people and growing frustrated with shortcomings and misunderstandings. Similar to Sari, he doesn't tolerate any disrespect towards himself or those he cares about, sharply correcting any attempts to do so. He's vehemently anti-authoritarian and doesn't care about social status, even acting openly defiant towards the Maximals. He also suffers from a deep lack of empathy towards other people- however, he finds other ways to express his care for those he loves.

And as for what they have in common? Well, they're all nerds that hyperfixate on different things, ESPECIALLY pieces of media. They're all researchers and scientists that are hungry for more. They've all suffered some kind of past trauma. They're kids that struggle with being honest with themselves, with letting people in and swallowing their pride. They struggle with believing in themselves. They're lonely- they've always felt alone in the world. So when they find each other? They realize that maybe the universe isn't such a lonely place after all.

Also, they would definitely act like siblings that grew up together for their entire lives- even if they only knew each other for a day.
