Houses and Taxes
After his 3rd failed attempt at getting everyone into Dungeons and Dragons, (apparently when you deal with demons for a living a "stupid dice can’t tell you that beheading this creature doesn't work because I did that before"), Simon makes up a Shadowhunter Version. "Houses and Taxes" , where the shadowhunters get to experience life as a mundane, and have to navigate it according to role playing rules.
It's Chaos.
"Why can’t I apply for this job?!"
"Because your character didn’t go to college."
"I couldn’t afford that because I didn’t roll high enough to get the scholarship. "
"Welcome to mundane life."
-
Simon: "Jace, you're homeless now." Jace: "What? Why?" Simon: "Because you didn't want to pay an electrician to fix your stove and it short-circuited and then everything was on fire." Jace: "I had my character fix it himself!" Simon: "But you didn't invest any skill points in craftsmanship, so your character actually made it worse. And you rolled less than a 5, so the firefighters got Magnus' cat out of the tree before getting to you." Magnus: "I made sure to make my character's cat extra adorable, so the charisma stat helped my roll for the firefighter priority." Jace: "How was I supposed to know that I would need such a mediocre skill?" Izzy: "Well, what good did you think maxing out attractiveness and combat would do?" Jace: "Just trying to keep my character close to myself." Izzy: "Any now you are homeless, that's what you get from that." Jace: "Can I crash with you?" Izzy: "I just sold my place to afford the downpayment on my restaurant and moved in with Clary." Alec: "Iz? Out of curiosity, how many skill points did you invest in cooking?" Izzy: "None. I used the 'personal experience' card to buff that, so that I could put points into other things." Alec: "Okay. Simon? Is it too late withdraw the offer of financial backing I made to Izzy earlier?" Simon: "If you can roll higher than 13, the bank will lose all documentation of it due to a hacker attack." Izzy: "Hey!"

so @erch0maii said in a post that i didn’t want to hijack that the reason that both screen adaptations of tmi didn’t feel quite right is because they were these dark gritty adaptations while the books are, at heart, campy and silly and comical. and i was thinking about this and how it relates to the other series in the tsc canon. when i first read tsc i thought that the reason they felt tmi felt different from tid, tda, and tlh is because they were her first books but it really all comes down to the character’s sense of humor and genre awareness. because all the other tsc series (and i’m betting twp too) take themselves so seriously, but timi doesn’t do that.
with genre awareness, the characters are put in this dark edgy fantasy war series but they act like their in a satire or a comedy. my favorite parts of qoaad were when jace and clary were in these dangerous situations and were acting so nonchalant about it. and it wasn’t even like a fake confidence or something, they genuinely just are Like That. like at the war council they walked in casually with normal clothes and people didn’t even notice them until lily called them out. like, they could have changed, they could have made a big entrance, but no, why bother. and later in brocelind when manuel rips out the tent and they’re playing tic tac toe. they don’t acknowledge him at all, not even to make a joke about him ruining the tents they borrowed. they just sit there playing tic tac toe. and again on the imperishable fields, jace has a knife to manuel’s back and clary is holding the stanchion but emma describes them as walking as if they’re out for a morning stroll.
and like look at the parallels between the series. the tlh crew met one and a half princes of hell and barely made it out with their sanity. the tmi gang has collectively met 3 princes of hell and in literally every situation they’re on the same level. when emma and julian went to thule it was this dark scary traumatizing thing, this actual hell that wasn’t quite hell. and when james, matthew, lucie, and cordelia went to edom it was this terrible experience that both lucie and matthew spent literally dying. but when the tmi gang went to hell, what ever. yeah it was serious and traumatic and scarring but not in the same way. izzy and simon hooked up. clary and jace had sex. and alec made fun of all four of them for it after. jace got caught by a demon and clary scolded him like he left the fridge open. they literally snuck into sebastian’s elite fortress with a plan from simon’s dnd campaign. and diyu?  even when simon was having a mental breakdown he managed to flirt with izzy it took the tlh gang 3 long-ass books to defeat belial and christopher died in the process. the tmi gang beat sammael in a f*cking side book. if you go to the shadowhunter wiki and go to azazel’s history he’s said as being a part of team good. imagine how casual you have to be to get a prince of hell to join ‘team good’
and then there’s the angels. tessa’s contact with ithuriel almost killed her. emma and julian’s whole nephilim thing also almost killed them. and yeah, clary’s first encounter with raziel was very somber and serious. but in cols simon literally blackmailed raziel into giving him a magical sword. and with faerie, every encounter that the tda gang have with faeries or in faerie is this dangerous quest that could get everybody killed. the tmi gang don’t hesitaste to insult the seelie queen to her face
the thing that sets tmi apart from the rest of tsc is the characters’ refusal to take anything, themselves and everyone around them, seriously for very long

I can only imagine how sizzy will be like as parents any thoughts on that?
so, so many thoughts.
i am so adamant that simon and isabelle would be some of the best parents. the way they both show their love in their actions, and how together they'd have the protective and self-sacrificing nature of parenting down pat.. the way they have experience with kids from years of babysitting their nephews, and for izzy.. from being there as max grew up.. the way they would both harbor just enough trepidation when approaching parenthood that it would make them just that much better at being parents, if that makes sense..
the way i see it, izzy didn't have the best examples for parents. they love(d) her, yes. but they also weren't all that good at being the adults, and their problems always seemed to come before those of their children. she took on the strength of her parents, but i think as much as izzy had to learn that romantic love isn't necessarily a weakness, she'd have to do similarly with parenthood. because god this child in her arms could break down every brick of the fortress she's built around herself. there's just such an innate and all-consuming love there. and it will obviously scare her, but by the time she and simon have kids, she's learned that there is strength in giving your entire heart up, too. she's learned that the barriers her parents may have put around their love are exactly what she doesn't want to pass on, even though it scares her.
meanwhile, simon.. simon knows exactly what it feels like for unconditional love to be tested and come up wanting. and i believe he will fight tooth and nail to never have his kids feel even the slightest bit uncomfortable at home. i do think that simon would have a decent amount of doubt during izzy's first pregnancy and the early months of that child's life, though, due to the early loss of his own dad. on the one hand, you have the lack of a father to refer back to, both in memory and as a means of advice--thankfully, luke exists, and has existed as a father in simon's life for a long, long time. but on the other hand, simon is all too aware of what it feels like to lose a father too soon, and with the heightened mortality rate among shadowhunters... instead of letting that fear of being forced to leave his child(ren) behind control him, though, he decides to just be that much more intentional with the time he is given with them.
this idea of intentionality is absolutely something izzy would present to simon, as it's one of her greatest regrets when thinking back to max's childhood, despite her being a child all that time as well. it was was a resolution that would have a concluded a conversation i think she had with herself years before she and simon even got married, as she considered whether or not she wanted kids at all. i think she would have gone through something of a "what's the point?" phase before that she doesn't want simon to endure after all he himself had gone through.
and so they're intentional. they have family reading time every night they are able to. simon dm's kids dnd games. they eat meals together. they have game nights and movie nights. izzy sings to them when they cry at night, like her mother used to. they host sleepovers with the cousins. izzy lets them try on her heels for fashion shows. they encourage their kids' interests outside of shadowhunting; this one likes to sing and that one's learning to sew. they take them trick-or-treating in the best nerdy constumes. they don't shelter them from the world, but rather show them the lives and the people they'll be protecting one day. i love you's are abundant, as are hugs and kisses and tickles and teasing.
in my mind their household is the perfect mix of cool and warm. cool like adamas and the truth and the spring. and warm like fire and dark eyes and fresh baked cookies. and maybe it smells like cookies too, like whatever secret recipe they finally got right and refuse to stray from bc they just know they'll mess it up.

Out of all the characters from The Shadowhunter Chronicle, who would the Ros get along with the most?
youve got no idea how exicted i was to get this ask...i think abt this way too much. anyways!
i think farrah would get along most with jem. i thought about him a lot while creating their character, saur yes, there are some pretty heavy jem influences in farrah as a person and their romance route🤭 but also just as a person i think Farrah would like him the most. they'd also like to be friends with jace, but they'd be too intimidated and resign themselves to watching from the distance lmao
Quinn, i think, would get along best with clary or simon. Simons knowledge of everything mundane would really draw them in, and they'd absolutely love to talk about Dnd with him for hours. I think the biggest thing about clary that they'd like is how far she is willing to go to protect the people she cares about. For example, if they heard about what she did when simon got turned into a rat, they'd immediately make it their mission to become bestfriends with her they could also talk about art together teehee
Juliette would get along best with either izzy or emma carstairs. i think she'd really admire their strength, and despite how strong they are, they're able to realize when they might need someones help without feeling like that help makes them look weak. Also, she thinks they're hot
Nira would get along best with Tessa, i think. i can't really pinpoint exactly what they like about her, but something in my soul tells me they'd be bestfriends. Theres also the fact that Tessa got to have a family with the loves of her life that Nira really wishes she could experience themselves and that might be part of what draws them in but not in a jealous way more of like "im happy you got to have what i couldn't" type of way. idk if im making sense, but tessaianira bestfriendism for LIFE🤞🤞💯💯
Pepper (yes, i know you guys, no nothing about them yet. YOU WILL SO I PROMISE) would get along best with Will. they both have very similar approaches to life and i think they'd find a lot of comfort in knowing that despite everything that happened to him he still got to life a fluffing life and give them hope they theyll be able to do the same

Wip Questionnaire!
a tag from @kaylinalexanderbooks (go check hers out here!)
(and thank you for the nudge! this was very fun and helped me think about my wips in a new way)
Rules: answer as few or as many as you like!
1. What was the first part of your wip that you created?
Urban Fantasy/paranormal wip The Rubicon - the very first things I created were Carmen and Chase. I doodled them in the sides of my notebooks in my sophomore year of high school. Carmen used to be the protagonist of the story! A lot has changed since then, but I had characters way before I had a setting or a plot or anything else. High Fantasy wip The Stewniverse - this one is a little harder to answer! The first thing I made was Stewie, my cheerful hero of a knight. I drew him in his armor in class. But this story is a collaborative effort between me and my partner, and the first thing that existed was a pinterest board for Kieran, who my partner made up with the original intention of playing him in a DND game. So, characters, again. Urban Fantasy/paranormal wip The Lilywood Chronicles - I sort of started with characters for this one, too, but in the sense that I was creating family histories for the founding of the town! I made lists of families and how they developed over the years, and then I plugged almost all of that into a family history website to create a family tree.
2. If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?
I always gravitated towards instrumental songs that were either chosen or written for shows, but I have this secret hope that I would get to write the song myself, especially as someone that’s been slowly working on writing little themes for each of the characters in my fantasy wip, as well as having already made a tentative theme for Lilywood.
3. Who are your favourite characters you've made? Why?
I have a hard time picking favorites because I put so much of myself into all of my characters, but I think that the ones I like most are Elliot from the Rubicon and Jamie from the Lilywood Chronicles. It’s difficult to talk about, but I poured so much of my dissociative disorder into these two characters in a way that means a lot to me, even before I knew that I was doing it. With these two characters, I have a really great chance to talk about what having a dissociative disorder has been like in different ways. That 1) can help educate people on what it looks like but also 2) can be a source of representation for a highly stigmatized and misrepresented disorder (DID). It’s something that means a lot to me, and I hope will mean a lot to others.
4. What other pieces of media do you think would share a fan base for your story?
The Rubicon - people who like shows like Lost Girl, Shadowhunters, Once Upon a Time really feel to me like they’d like the Rubicon, haha. It’s not really the same kind of urban fantasy, Rubicon is just ghosts, but I still kind of feel like they’d get into it! The Stewniverse - I feel like people who really like Galavant would really like this. I have this hope that the LOTR crowd would vibe with the Stewniverse (linguists making high fantasy stories and all that) but I don’t have nearly enough worldbuilding yet for it to be even comparable. But the high fantasy crowd that’s also looking for good queer storytelling.  The Lilywood Chronicles - The first thing that comes to mind is Lockwood & Co? I think that show has some similar vibes to what is going on in Lilywood.
5. What has been your biggest struggle with your wip?
The Rubicon - the worst part has been how long it took me to find the plot. I started this idea in 2012, and I didn’t have a solid idea of what the plot or flow of the story was until uhhh 2023. I had spent so much time thinking about Carmen as the protagonist and I kept getting stuck until I realized it was supposed to have been Peter all along. The Stewniverse - it is, once again, plot. This wip has a loose plot, but it’s all of the inbetween steps that I’m not sure about. There are also a ton of moving parts. I know there are bigger casts of characters than six, but I’m having trouble pacing the arcs for each character and each important relationship alongside what should be happening with the plot… which I also still haven’t figured out!!! The Lilywood Chronicles - The hardest part of this wip right now is struggling to tell who is the protagonist, or if all three of my main characters are protagonists. There are so many things happening alongside the main story, and I still haven’t figured out how to even begin writing this. It has a plot. It’s episodic. I don’t know who’s telling the story but it can’t be all of them because there are Big Secrets that prevent at least one character from being a narrator. I don’t have a direction to start in, and I think that’s probably because it started out as a tabletop rpg campaign.
6. Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!
Most prominently, the horses in my high fantasy wip!! Stewie helped deliver a foal when he was around 12 and they became very closely bonded - this is Ser Decadence! He’s a loyal, reliable, sweet, beautiful draught horse that is probably the closest thing to what I would call Stewie’s Soulmate. They are the best of friends. The other horses are also important, but none so much so as Ser Decadence. Their names are Lady Filigree and Carrots.  Honorable mention for Ashe, who is not an animal but a shapeshifting kelpie who probably spends as much time as a horse as he does in his “human” form.
7. How do your characters get around? (ex: trains, horses, cars, dragons, etc.)
In the Rubicon, mostly via car! It’s a city in the South without real public transportation so driving is a must.  In the Stewniverse, horses horses horses! In the Lilywood Chronicles, almost entirely walking around. It takes some time. But this sounds like a bit of a boring answer and I might think more about that.
8. What part of your wip are you working on rn?
The Rubicon - a first draft. I did half of hte 50k in 2023 NaNoWriMo, but I didn’t like how it was turning out, and I might start over. I’ve spent so long writing drafts for this story but I’ve never finished one.  Stewniverse - worldbuilding and most importantly, conlanging! I’m mapping out the land and I’m designing a couple of the fantasy languages, which is super fun but also requires so much thought and work. I’ve got tentative phonemic inventories for two languages, but I’m almost a little afraid to start working on the syntax, haha. Morphology is also. a lot. I’ve also been working out the kinks in the magic system. The Lilywood Chronicles - I’ve mostly been thinking about character relationships and interactive histories between different characters in the series. There are a lot of players and they all have opinions. I need to figure out how they fit in and where. I need to work a lot on the magic system in this wip, too, because it started out as a tabletop game and I need to really think about it and make it into something that better fits the world as a novel.
9. What aspects (tropes, maybe?) of your wip do you think will draw people in?
I think, mostly, the focus on recovery and growth. My characters all have so many problems, but they want to get better, even if they’re not going about it in the right way. Also, found family!! There’s so much found family in all of these wips, but especially in the Stewniverse and in the Lilywood Chronicles. Plus, you know, tons of queer representation!  I’m also hopeful that people will like my magic systems. The one in the Stewniverse means a lot to me!
10. What are your hopes for your wip?
I want people to connect with them! I want people to be able to feel the feelings I put in there, the lived experiences I drew from, and I hope they find comfort in them. also. I think I would cry if anyone ever made fanart for any of my wips.
no pressure tags for @faeriecinna, @albatris, @finickyfelix, and genuinely anyone who wants to do this! it was a lot of fun. blank under the cut.
1. What was the first part of your wip that you created?

Would anyone be interested in playing a ttrpg (probably dnd 5e) set in the shadowhunters universe? I was thinking about setting it in the 90s or early 00s (pre-TMI) in a US city that hasn't really be explored in-universe yet

on the topic of the young cob cast what were they like as young teens? like if there were bands and stuff what bands were they into? would they have emo phases?
-cracks fingers- finally my useless Knowledge of these characters lives comes in handy
Mattias first cause hes easiest: hi mattias is a Swiftie. Sorry. He listens to You Belong With Me and goes "Its Just Like Me." Other things that he was into as a teen (and still is as a 25 year old): pokemon, digimon, dnd, anime (but specifically like, wolf's rain, soul eater, bleach. That shit), etc. Etc. Mattias has a very wild imagination as a kid and teenager that his mother really encouraged so hes very passionate about the things he likes and doesn't care if they "childish" or not
Theron: if theron had access to MCR as a kid it would blow his mind. I know it would. Sadly, he was a little greek shadowhunter boy getting told that being gay is terrible and awful by his mother and father. Basically how we see him at the start of the flashbacks in cob is how he was when he was like 10-14. He really wanted to prove to his father that he was serious and wasn't childish. Didn't have many hobbies. Liked to read, but mostly trained.
Dominic: shy, but spoiled little guy. Cicero really gave him the world and tried to do everything for him. Dom didn't have many other kids to interact with before the academy so he mostly just consumed whatever media his dad consumed. So he read a lot of books, listened to a lot of weird Dad Music (you know the kind), etc. He also wasn't great at talking to adults either though. He was really clingy to cicero and was like. Super super worried about going to the academy because he'd never been without cicero before (and also it made him worried about being abandoned again).
Ava: she was the Art kid in school. I DON'T THINK IVE ACTUALLY SAID THIS ANYWHERE, YEAH AVA DRAWS DHAJHSJD. She has basically the same attitude she has now, but a bit more carefree and less rule-followy. Id anyone were to have an emo phase before the academy it's Ava. Probably did. She probably has pictures of her wearing some all black outfit to middleschool that she doesn't show anyone. Listened to MCR uhhhhh other...emo bands. I can't think of many rn. She probably still listens to them but not as much as she did.
Nerissa: Nerissa as a teenager was being emotionally neglected by her parents oops! She mostly read books that they had in their personal library and didn't do much else. Her parents weren't ever around to train her, and they had a nanny but she wasn't a shadowhunter, just a mundane with the sight. So Nerissa didn't really get taught how to properly fight like a shadowhunter. Which is why she is an archer. Nerissa was maybe a biiiit more expressive as a teenager, but nothing like. Groundbreaking. She's always been very mute with her emotions, and also why shes very blunt

“Rules : post the names of all the files in your WIP folder regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have wips. (please repost, don’t reblog) This isn’t just for writing either. Sketch titles? Comics? DnD campaigns? If you have an unfinished project, it counts!”
I was tagged by the delightful @thrillingdetectivetales. Some of these are very old and will likely never be finished - I've thrown a * beside ones which will maybe be picked up again, and a ** beside ones I 100% intend to go back and actually finish.
