arthur repealing the ban on magic and sitting merlin and morgana down to figure out who is going to be court sorcerer and ready to mediate a debate but before morgana can even open her mouth, merlin passes to position onto her. arthur and morgana just stare, morgana makes feeble attempts to spark an argument, to instigate merlin to at least fight for it. even arthur is like “…you don’t even want, like, a room or something for your magic work?? none of the perks?? a different position in the court?????” and merlin’s just like “nope! i’m good!” and morgana and arthur exchange a look before arthur asks why. merlin’s answer is that his position, where he belongs, is at arthur’s side. besides. morgana deserves it. she was snubbed from becoming queen so it was only fair.

The idea that GRRM is anti Tolkien is particularly funny because ASOIAF is sprinkled with rather intricate (and even passionate) homages to LOTR. And I can’t help but think of how Tolkien’s Fellowship, more specifically the Hobbits, may have inspired GRRM’s Night’s Watch. Jon Snow, for starters, is in many ways a combination of LOTR’s Frodo and Aragorn. And in the same way that Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin are unexpected heroes in LOTR (because who looks to a hobbit as the face of an epic adventure?), Jon the bastard becomes the leader of a ragtag of socially disenfranchised men (in the form of the NW) who are anything but heroic. Sure there’s the odd knight or noble in there, but the NW is quite full of criminals and the very worst of the social order. The hobbits aren’t the strongest or the sharpest but they become the face of the fight against Sauron. And the NW, while being severely undermanned and under-equipped, has become the main force that stands against winter. GRRM even adds a love letter to Tolkien’s Sam Gamgee by adding his on Sam - Sam Tarly - who acts as a moral compass and counselor to Jon, in the same ways that Sam Gamgee is key to Frodo’s journey. And just like Frodo, Jon gets his very own pair of jokester friends, one of whine is even named Pyp. So it’s all very beautiful and nice, and we should talk about it more because it��s super evident that GRRM is a massive Tolkien fanboy. But I do have to say tho, GRRM’s take on Gandalf is exceedingly hilarious just because Melisandre is famously very bad at her job.

The last I checked, it was more than two years ago that this particular argument ended, and there hasn’t been hide nor hair of you seen in the Star Wars fandom since Rings of Power came out. Is the LotR fandom no longer responding to your incessant drama-mongering, Your Highness? Is that why you’re trudging up ancient history in a fandom so far beneath your standards as Star Wars?

Well, Your Worship, I’ll bite, just this one time. I have never, not even once, asserted that Rush Clovis was the injured party in that fight. I have only ever said that Anakin Skywalker is ALSO not the injured party.

The injured party is Padmé Amidala. Who was nearly kissed against her will (and yes, that is tantamount to attempted sexual assault). Who was sure that her beloved husband would come to her defense and stop the assault…only to have Anakin look her in the eye with disgust and say, “YOU have NO say in this!”

Anakin was not fighting to protect Padmé. He was trying to punish her, for something that was not her fault.

He SHOULD have defended her, yes, but instead he treated her like a cheater and a traitor, AND put her mission in considerable jeopardy. If Anakin had kept his head and non-violently escorted Clovis out of the apartment after the kiss was broken, Clovis might have believed Padmé’s argument that she and Anakin were just friends. Instead, he fell for Clovis’s obvious bait into a fight, which told Clovis all he needed to know: that Padmé was in love with someone else, and that she was only dating Clovis to spy on him. And that forced Clovis to accelerate his plans against the Republic, leading to him desperately putting a gun to Padmé’s head the very next episode.

Anakin did not defend Padmè. All he accomplished by beating the shit out of Clovis was putting Padmé in more danger. And if I had been Padmé, I’d have dumped his ass permanently.

That’s my last word on the matter. Now fuck off and get a paying job, Domina, if you can.

Obviously, DnD characters are wish fulfillment and lots of people don’t want to address the slow senescence of the vulnerable human form in their fun games. That being said, narratively, I do think that levels should probably fluctuate over the course of a lifetime. The level twenty world-saver is going not going to stay level twenty into their old age—that’s not how athletes and retirement work! Wisdom and Charisma casters maybe, but your STR/CON/DEX builds are going to soften with age. They might still be the spryest bastards in the old people tai chi group, but “terrifyingly in shape 70 year old” is not the same as “deadliest man on the planet”. Drop those old folks a few levels, give them some creaky bones and presbyopia. It’s good for them, promise.
