Wildflower Honey | Spencer Reid
Smurph's Masterlist | Series Masterlist
Part 10 of Routine Maintenance
Warnings: makeouts, first times, fingering, soft dom!Spencer, hickies, bruises, water sex, beach sex, subdrop, aftercare, crying after sex.
Summary: You decide to take Spencer to a secluded spot to rock his world. He turns the tables on you.
Tumblr media
It neared two in the morning before Holly and Michelle emerged from Tucci's, hand in hand and grinning like madmen. Spencer couldn't help the smile that peeled open across his face at the sight. Good for them, they both deserved it.
Honey stood a bit away from him, keeping her distance in front of her friends. Spencer didn't mind. It wasn't the first time a woman wanted to keep it from her friend that she was sleeping with him. It probably wouldn't be the last.
Michelle made a beeline for Honey, scooping her up in a big hug. Honey set her chin on her shoulder and squeezed her back as Holly sidled up next to him.
Tumblr media
"Thank you for coming," he murmured with a sheepish grin. "I didn't think this was your scene, but I wasn't ready to do this alone."
Spencer shrugged, "Anytime, man."
Holly reached out a hand for Spencer to shake, and when he took it pulled him in for a bear hug. Spencer chuckled to himself and hugged him back as the girls whispered between themselves.
"You guys wanna hit up Tooky's?" Holly asked as he pulled away.
Spencer glanced over at Honey, who gave him a subtle shake of her head. He didn't really want to go back there anyway after what went down with Lonnie and Lloyd, or have a reminder of that horrible night.
"I'm ready to head back," he said instead. All he really wanted to do was pound Honey into the mattress anyways.
"I know it's not my business," Holly began, keeping his voice down while the girls chatted. He cleared his throat and adjusted as he stood in his uncomfortableness. "And I don't know what's going on, if anything is going on, but-."
"Hurt her and I'll get my ass kicked?"
Holly chuckled, "That… and just keep something in mind for me, man. She's rough around the edges, but she deserves the world. Even if it's just sex, which I don't want to hear about, respect her."
He kicked lightly at the ground and avoided Spencer's gaze. "You'll have friends here even when you leave, Honey included. We like you, so don't screw up your chance to come visit if you ever find yourself back this way."
"I won't," Spencer promised. He meant it, and he valued Holly's words. "Maybe I'll come back some day."
He didn't even know if he meant that last part, but it was nice to know the option was there.
Holly nodded, and they said their goodbyes. Spencer made sure to open the door to the van for Honey before going around to his side, then they set off for Thunderbird.
The dark highway spread out for miles, lonesome and scattered with a few errant off roads. The sky lay above them in a deep greenish blue, the redwoods and pines along the road shadowed in darkness. Spencer thought something was missing, and it took a bit to realize it was the fireflies.
They didn't occur naturally in California. The Midwest was full of them in the summer, blinking lazily in the night air. The closest thing out here were the stars shining brightly above them. They glimmered across the horizon, disappearing into the far-off ocean.
Music played softly through the speakers of Honey's beat up van. Spencer kept his hand on her thigh, just under the hem of her dress as he leaned against the door. It comforted him, as it had been years since he’d spent more than one night with a woman, let alone worked up to the point of touching her like this without having slept with her. He was looking forward to that, and three more weeks of easy sex and physical comfort. Maybe she’d even sleep next to him after.
He glanced over to check on her. It was late, nearing four in the morning. The wind from the cracked window blew her hair back, the light from the dash washing her in a teal glow. She was truly a beautiful woman, looking ethereal in the dim lighting.
"Where are we going?" he asked after a while. Thunderbird had only been about forty minutes from the restaurant, and they'd been driving for over an hour.
Honey smiled to herself, but she didn't look his way, instead focusing on the road ahead. "I want to show you something."
She didn't say anything else. He didn't press it. If she was going to murder him in the woods he was pretty sure he could over power her. If she wasn't, he'd been through enough with her to know he'd probably enjoy it. She'd been right about the camping trip with the guys, so he dropped it.
Another hour later, and she turned onto an off road. The van jumped and protested with each bump, but Honey just pressed on. They drove for a good twenty minutes before she turned again, stopping just inside an enclave of trees. As she put it in park, Spencer looked over at her again. She just popped open her door and hopped out. Spencer followed, meeting her around the front of the van.
She reached out a hand for him, and he took it. Her warm fingers clasped his loosely, and she took off further into the ocean of foliage. The sun began peeking through the trees, and she was heading straight toward it. He could still see the van behind him, glad it was still in his line of sight.
Birdsong blossomed as she led him down a winding dirt road. Her sundress flowed behind her like a river, billowing in the breeze. They hit another curve in the direction of the sun, and she was lost in its shine as they stepped out of the trees.
It took a minute for Spencer's eyes to adjust to the light, but when they did his breath caught in his chest. A riverbed lay before them, clear blue water trickling along lazily. Mountains of trees surrounded the lake, spread out as far as the eye could see. The sun made its way up the opposite side, blanketing the water in shadow and Spencer and Honey in shade.
"Why did you bring me here?" Spencer asked quietly. It was so serene and perfect, he almost wanted to cry at this place's natural beauty. It was such an intimately hidden place, surely as secluded as parts of Honey, as parts of himself.
Honey squeezed his fingers, "I don't know. I just wanted to."
She turned to him with a soft smile and adventure gleaming in her eye, "How do you feel about a day away from Thunderbird?"
"Sounds like a dream."
Honey went back to the van and moved it closer to the riverbed, backing it up through the little winding road. She angled the back to face the bank, then opened up the trunk. She had everything one would need for an impromptu camping trip inside. A blanket was spread just outside of the van, a few camping chairs and a little meal kit. She even had a traveling trash can and some food in a cooler. She went quickly to work setting up a fire for the cool morning chill and made some coffee over the flames.
Spencer lounged on a chair on the blue patterned blanket as she handed him one of those metal cups campers liked to use. Honey eased herself next to him and sighed happily. Steam rose from her mug as she held it delicately, her knees pulled up to her chest. She’d long since taken off her shoes, opting to walk around barefoot, her wild hair bouncing down around her shoulders.
This was exactly the place a woman like her belonged. A stunning creature sitting in one of the most beautiful places Spencer had ever been.
“I love this place.” She spoke quietly, her voice far away as she lived through an old memory. She pointed off toward one of the ridges. “When I first found it, I thought for a moment I’d fallen off that cliff and died. I thought it was heaven.”
"How'd you find it?" he asked lightly, sipping from his mug. Everything out here was still, moving only in the way that was natural to it. It was the sort of peace Spencer had been searching for all this time. He was honored to be there.
"When Ernie died, I was still too scared to go back in the ocean. I still don't like it, but I'm good with the rivers," she began, but it wasn't sad. That bright spirit glinted in her eye as she watched the scene before them. "I just started driving out to the middle of nowhere and hiking. I found this place a few years ago and I like to come here when I need a break."
"Found yourself needing a break?" he asked lightly. She nodded slowly, then looked over at him.
"I don't know if you know this, but I shot two guys last week." Her tone was playful, but her eyes raged with the memory. "Plus, it's good to get away sometimes."
Spencer reached out a hand, and she clasped it without hesitation. He squeezed her fingers tight before threading them together. "I'm sorry you had to do that."
Honey looked at him sadly, "I'm sorry you took a bat to the face."
He chuckled and shrugged. "I've had worse."
The sun warmed them as it rose, blanketing them in the steady rise in temperature. Honey's skin lay awash in orange and pink as it broke through the clouds, her eyes gleaming in the light. She let go of his hand and set the coffee cup on the ground.
Spencer watched curiously as she stood and stretched, letting out a sweet groan as her arms came down. Honey turned to him with a devilish grin.
"I don't know about you, but I'm gonna cool down before it gets too hot."
Spencer was about to ask what she meant when her fingers laced underneath the hem of her dress. His jaw dropped as she pulled down a pair of pink satin panties. They dropped to the blanket and she stepped out of them, then pulled the sundress over her head.
Her hair swung down, landing over her shoulders and back. Her naked body glimmered in the light, curvy in all the right places and made of perfect places to grab a handful. His heart nearly stopped beating in his chest at the sight.
She leaned on one hip and smirked at him.
"Care to join me?"
Tumblr media
I was feeling pretty good about myself as I walked into the river. The water was warm from the summer, welcoming and safe as I stepped further in. Waiting until I was deep enough, I ducked below the surface to wet my hair.
When I popped back up, pushing my locks back from my face, I spotted Spencer hurrying to undo his belt. He'd already stepped out of his shoes, fingers fumbling to unlatch the leather and pull his pants down.
Feeling a bit sorry for him, and rather excited, I made my way back to him. The rocky shoreline was smooth and warm under my feet, his jaw agape as he watched me approach. Water dripped from my body as I reached him, my hands pushing his away gently.
I leaned in and pressed my lips to his, reveling in the hungry groan that escaped from him. Smoothly, I undid his belt as his tongue slid against mine, unzipping his pants and pulling his shirt from his waistline. Spencer's fingers deftly unbuttoned it as I slid my hand inside his pants, palming his growing length.
He moaned into me as he tugged off his shirt and tossed it onto the blanket behind him, revealing his fuzzy chest and soft belly. I let my hands wander up his stomach, loving the slight twitches of his muscles as he pushed down his pants.
I couldn't help myself, and I had to pull away just to get a good look at his cock. He was already hard and standing straight up, a slight curve at the end that I'd personally always enjoyed in a man. My hand wrapped around his thick length, hardly able to meet my fingertips together. When I gave him an experimental pump, he bucked forward in my hand.
Biting my lip, I looked up at him through my lashes and smiled. In a flash, Spencer scooped me up and pulled my hips flush against his. He kissed me furiously, pulling me by my leg to grind against my damp folds.
I couldn't help but cling to him tightly, moaning against his lips as he stalked off toward the water. He pulled away to watch where he was stepping, so I moved onto his neck, nipping and sucking little bruises into his skin.
The river welcomed us, enveloping our bodies in the warm water. Spencer’s strong hands held me close, safely keeping me in place as we went deeper. The birds sang through the trees, squirrels running up trunks and over logs. The trickling sound of the water drowned out our kissing like horny teenagers, but I didn't mind.
I leaned back and sighed, my legs wrapped around his waist. Spencer held my hips as I lay back into the water, my hair following the flow of the current as I closed my eyes. I floated like that, just enjoying the feeling of someone else's hands on me.
Without warning, Spencer went under the water, pulling me with him. I held my breath at the last moment, opening my eyes underneath to see him with puffy cheeks and trying not to smile. Our hands reached out in unison, tugging one another close and meeting in the middle.
Bubbles popped their way to the surface as Spencer kissed me underneath the serene stream of water. His lips were warm, both of us holding our breaths until he pulled me back above to the fresh air.
"You are fucking incredible," he panted, holding me close. Our naked bodies slid along one another, his dick pressing against my belly. I smiled and set my forehead against his, trying to catch my breath. His eyes were intense, glinting with mischief. Spencer's hand smoothed down my back and over my thigh, reaching between us. My jaw went a bit slack as his fingers brushed against my pussy, easing his way between my folds.
"Just look at you," he murmured, his gaze unyielding as he watched me for a reaction. I sucked in a wavering breath as the pads of two thick fingers pushed against my entrance, swirling just enough to make me twitch in anticipation. He cocked his head, "Are you sure you want this?"
I nodded emphatically, "Spencer, please…"
That seemed to be all the permission he needed. In one swift movement, Spencer kissed me roughly, his free hand tangling into my damp hair, the other breeching my cunt under the surface. I moaned sharply, the sudden intrusion stretching my walls as two fingers pressed inside.
My body tensed around him. Spencer eased his way in, curling and dragging the pads of his fingers as he pulled them out, only to push them back in. My chest heaved with each pump, my hips rocking back down to meet them. The water sloshed around us, but he was focused solely on me.
He leaned his forehead against mine to watch me, his cheeks red and blotchy. I could feel his cock against my thigh, bobbing up and down with the water. His hair started to curl as it dried, his strong hands holding me exactly where he wanted.
"Mmm, Spencer," I whined desperately, bucking my hips for my release. It had been so long, and my eyes fluttered shut in anticipation when he gripped my jaw suddenly and stopped his hand between my legs.
Spencer angled me to look at him, his eyes blazing. I clenched around his fingers at the fire that lay there, and he leaned in to nip at my bottom lip before pulling away.
"You're too tense," he growled in a low voice. His fingers could have bruised my cheeks by the way he held me, and all it did was make me want to fuck his hand until it cramped. "Let go. I'm gonna take care of you, but you have to let me. Stop trying to be in control all the time."
My eyes turned glassy at his words, his promise to get me where I wanted to go. I found myself nodding dumbly, and only then did he begin moving his fingers again, pumping me slowly and steadily picking up speed.
"Keep your eyes on me," Spencer whispered. My thighs twitched around his hips. "I wanna watch you cum for me."
He kissed me then, his curling digits driving me closer and closer to the brink of insanity. I was floating on air, my face heating up and my body relaxing into his wants and wishes. He kept a firm grip on my jaw, watching intently in a way that with anyone else might have made me feel too seen, but it was deliciously dominating.
I let my body take over, letting Spencer guide me instead of barreling toward a release. We had all the time in the world, and my hips rocked in motion with what he wanted. My breathing picked up, my chest heaving.
"There you go," Spencer murmured. The coil started to tighten in that panicking way, excitement coursing through my veins as my walls tightened around him. I watched him through hazy eyes with my mouth hung open as he cracked a cocky grin, his eyes swimming with desire. "Just take it, good girl. Let me watch."
The moan that burst from my chest was pathetic, my fingers tightening in his hair. My hips rolled, grinding down on his beautiful hand as that tension in my lower belly finally snapped.
"Spencer!" I cried out into the wilderness, the mountains swallowing my ecstasy. My eyes rolled back as I pressed my forehead against his, my body shuddering and clamping down on him.
Spencer slowed as it waned, and when he pulled himself from me I let out a whine. His arms encircled me, pulling me in for a bear hug. I went limp in his grasp, letting my head loll on his shoulder as I caught my breath.
"Oh, that was perfect, perfect," he cooed sweetly in my ear. Spencer pressed a gentle kiss to the side of my head as he held me close. "Good girl…"
I closed my eyes, reveling in the comfort and his praise. Spencer rocked me back and forth under the water, lightly rubbing a hand up my spine. I felt him pull back a little to look at me.
"Don't fall asleep on me now," he warned, and the next thing I knew he was carrying me out of the water. I clung limply to him, ready to doze even as the cool air hit my naked skin.
Spencer set me gently on the blanket and smoothed back my hair. I grinned weakly up at him, and he cocked his head at me. "I'm not done with you, Honey."
My skin buzzed with electricity as Spencer smoothed his palms up my thighs. He squeezed now and then as he made his way up further, taking time to fondle my breasts. His hard cock stood at attention between his thighs, making me more excited than I could ever explain. I couldn't help but sigh as his broad hand feathered lightly over my throat, my eyes fluttering shut.
"God, look at you," he breathed, looming over me. I reached out for him, and he complied without hesitation. Spencer leaned down and kissed me gently, his hand moving to cup my jaw.
I moaned into his mouth as Spencer lowered himself on top of me. My head swam with the want I had for him, with the release I wanted to feel again. My arms encircled his neck, my legs tangling around his waist, but Spencer shook his head and pulled back.
He tapped my nose, and I'm sure I looked ridiculous going cross eyed trying to follow it. "Just lie back and take it, okay?"
I made a face, "Why don't you want me to take control?"
Spencer chuckled and gave me a quick kiss. I tried to chase him for more, but he shoved me down into the blanket with a hand on my chest. He gave me a serious look, "I'm tired of watching you take care of everyone. I don't care what you do away from me over the next few weeks, but when we're together, I'm going to take care of you."
"Why?" I asked quietly. I enjoyed it, sure, but it had been so long since anyone had wanted to do so. At least in this way. I was everyone's rock, everyone else's safe place.
His eyes were dark and delicious as he watched me in the morning light. "Because I said so. I don't have any control in this town, and you have too much of it. I think it's time we both have a change in scenery."
I nodded in acceptance. In truth, I wanted that. I wanted to let go, to have even the small opportunity to do so. Spencer reached out and grabbed my jaw again, looming darkly above.
"Yes or no," he growled darkly. "I wanna hear you say it."
My back arched at the dominance in his voice. I shivered even in the morning heat, wriggling a bit to alleviate the pulsing between my legs.
"Yes," I whispered shakily.
"Good girl," he praised softly. Spencer moved himself onto his knees and grabbed his pants from our pile of clothing. I watched through hooded lids as he pulled his wallet out of his pocket, flipping it open until he slipped a condom wrapper from the old leather.
I got up on my elbows, slowly making my way up to him as he put everything back into the pile. I was getting to my knees in front of him when he caught me, cocking a brow my way.
"What did I just say?"
I shivered in delight at his commanding voice, but I just fluttered my lashes at him. I put one hand on his belly and smiled, the other reaching between us to stroke his cock. Spencer's jaw clenched, but he just watched me with a squint.
"Can I put it on?" I asked sweetly. I twisted my wrist and gave him a light squeeze, delighting in the way his length pulsed under my palm. "Pretty please?"
This was new for me. I was used to sex being a fight for dominance, a quick battle for release. Sure, with Ernie, it had always been special and loving. We enjoyed trying new things and experimenting, but being completely submissive was something I hadn't tried.
Spencer nodded, handing me the wrapper. I was glad he brought it. I was still on birth control and Rico and I hardly used them besides as an afterthought, but Spencer was new to me and I was new to him. Who knew who he'd slept around with or the last time he'd been tested.
I kept my eyes trained on his as I opened it and pulled out the condom. Spencer's chest patched red, his lips kiss bitten and swollen as he watched me back. Shuffling closer, I licked my palm and wrapped my hand around his length, giving him a few twisting squeezes.
His breathing picked up, his hips twitching in anticipation. Pinching the top of the latex lightly so it didn't bubble at the tip, I held him firm as I slid it down his dick. When it was secure, I smoothed my palms up his chest and leaned in for a kiss.
His lips were warm as they pressed against mine, one hand going for the hair at the nape of my neck as the other slid down my body. I moaned into him, melting into his strong presence and falling into Spencer Reid.
He gripped my ass harshly, grunting as he pulled me flush against him. In a swift move, his hand went down to the back of my thigh and tugged it up, and the next thing I knew I was on my back on the blanket again.
Spencer made quick work of mounting me, grinding his length into my folds. I tangled my hands in his hair as he latched onto my neck, nipping and swiping his tongue to soothe. His hands wandered, squeezing and pinching only to smooth a hard palm over it after. I wriggled beneath him and whined for more friction, and soon enough he gave me what I wanted.
His hand slipped between us, lining his thick head against my entrance. My thighs splayed open, wanting and ready for him. I struggled to relax as he breached me, he was so thick, but after a deep breath and a pause he pushed forward. He was so much larger than me, and my body struggled to accommodate his member as he pumped himself with my cunt.
"Oh, god," I whispered shakily, my limbs trembling with each smooth roll of his hips. Spencer kept a firm hand in my hair as he did so. He had himself braced on his elbow, his body keeping me so in place I couldn't even rock back into him.
My cheeks flushed with heat. My vision blurred as he filled my emptiness. The stretch burned, but it was worth it, so worth it. The deeper he went, the deeper I fell into his eyes. Spencer watched me with an intensity I'd never seen before, as though he were trying to read my mind and succeeding.
My jaw wobbled as his hips rolled in a slow swirling motion. Spencer rocked me into the blanket, the packed sand shifting beneath me with each gentle thrust. His own face was patched red, but he was taking in my expression, watching for any sign. I knew instinctively that whatever one he found, he'd follow the road it led until he reached the end, then go find a new one.
"So fucking tight," he groaned, his eyes fluttering back for a moment as he enjoyed himself. I clung to him limply, my mind running further away each time his cock pressed further inside me. "So wet and warm… this perfect pussy…"
I needed more. I needed to be beaten into submission by him, but it seemed Spencer had something else in mind to drive me crazy other than brutally fast and hard sex.
His forehead pressed against mine as he picked up his pace. Spencer's breath fanned across my lips as he bottomed out, both of us sucking in deep as my body adjusted to him. Each roll of his hips was focused, poised to hit me deep and elicit a moan with every firm push of his head against my cervix.
His eyes entranced me, my mind and problems drifting further away. I couldn't even remember my name. It didn't matter anyways. All I existed in at that moment was Spencer, in what he was giving me and what I took without hesitation.
He kissed me with purpose, using each press of his lips to accentuate a thrust, a moan, an animalistic grunt from him. Even the rushing river faded into the void of my mind. Our breathing became the only sound I heard, the sharp slap of his hips hitting mine echoing around us.
"Spencer…" I whined, nuzzling close, desperately. Forceful huffs burst from my throat with each thrust, as though he were more than happy to fuck the breath out of me completely.
My body took everything he gave. My mind fell into a fog, a hazy gray space of our breathing and the sweat on our skin. We slid together with ease, both of us moving in time and falling further into the sensation.
He destroyed me in an instant with this. My ecstasy stood up tall in the flowers, all bright yellow blooms at the tip. He set me on fire, put out but left to smolder in the mid morning sun. That ember stayed lit, and as my orgasm crested, my trembling jaw fell open once more to call his name up to the skies and disappear in the clouds.
"Cum for me," Spencer murmured against my lips as I chased him subconsciously. His entire being swallowed mine, absorbing me into his chest as we became one in that moment. "Crumble to pieces, Honey. Honey…"
I shattered, my gaze locked to his. Spencer never let up, never stumbled. He was this steady presence to cling to as a part of my mind burst into pebbles, the walls I'd kept up all these years exploding into rubble. I fell apart. I crumbled.
The fire refused to dissipate, the smoldering flames lingering to be risen again. Spencer thrust hard one last time, capturing my lips with his. We slotted together perfectly, and I pulled him tightly to me as he moaned desperately into me. I felt him cum, the thick rush of heat that filled me even though he was protected. His groans turned to trembling grunts as he finished, nearly collapsing when he was done.
Spencer pulled away just enough to press a trail of kisses down my jaw and neck, soft whispers fanning across my skin, "Perfect, perfect girl… good girl…"
His praises echoed through my bones, bouncing between my rib cage until they hit my heart. I reveled in them, his gentle hands brushing back my hair and his sweet words piercing me like a knife.
"You're fucking amazing, Honey," he said one last time. We both sighed as he pulled out, then got to his knees.
I found myself pulling up to sit. My arms wrapped around my knees, holding them close to my chest as he went about taking off the condom and cleaning himself up. I heard the crinkle of the wrapper, the sounds of it hitting the trash can, but my eyes were focused on the scenery around us.
Emotions I couldn't place swirled in my chest. The broad expanse of forestry laid out before me like an endless haven. I was safe. I was satisfied. Still, my body shuddered as hot tears came suddenly. My jaw clenched tightly to keep them in check, but I couldn't stop the swell of vulnerability that surfaced.
"Hey," Spencer said softly, his gentle hand landing on my shoulder. I couldn't look at him. His arms encircled me instead. I wished it felt like a vice, something to break free from, but again Spencer Reid was something solid and warm to lean against, to be consumed by.
"I don't…I don't know what's wrong with me," I muttered. My skin melted into him, my arms leaving my knees to clutch his and keep them around me. "I need to be touched. I don't know why."
Spencer's legs spread to pull me between them, his thighs encasing my own. I molded to fit his bigger frame, letting him hold me and in the same moment holding him so tightly around me I might be crushed.
"You're not doing anything wrong," he murmured, his lips brushing against my ear. I was so ashamed of being seen. I wanted to disappear to nothing with the weight of his eyes looking right through me. "You let go. You didn't lose control, you gave it up, and it was glorious. Just take a minute to get it back."
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. The scent of sweat and sex swirled around us, the faint plume of coffee beans just on the edge from the nearby fire. Its soft crackles grounded me, the steady rise and fall of his chest against my ribcage calming my fast beating heart.
"Thank you for giving that to me," Spencer whispered after a while.
I turned enough to look up at him, but he never let me go. My brows furrowed together as I swallowed a lump in my throat, not sure how to phrase what I wanted to ask. “Why did you want that?”
Spencer’s eyes widened a bit, but then they softened for me. One hand came up to cup my jaw and rub a light circle into my cheek. He sighed, “Let’s just say it’s been a long time since I’ve had any real intimacy with anyone. Sex is one thing, but this?”
His palm smoothed down my arm, lightly squeezing my bicep. He hugged me tighter and gave a little grunt with the effort. “I’m not in the place to ask anyone to trust me enough for this. I’m a fucking mess, a loner, and I’ve been running from my problems for years instead of just facing them. I can’t keep a girlfriend long enough for real intimacy to happen.” “Then why did you ask me for it?” I asked quietly, my voice shaking just enough to denote a bit of fear. Not of him. Of myself, of how much I enjoyed it.
“After what happened at Tooky’s…” Spencer trailed off, taking in a deep breath. He needed a moment to gather up his courage, opting to press his lips to my forehead to gather his thoughts. I leaned into it, sucking up any bit of comfort I could get in that instant. Spencer sighed against me, “I find myself trusting you. It’s been a long time and selfishly, I’d like to let myself do that more before I leave.”
He pulled back to look down at me, “Is that okay?”
His eyes were filled to the brim with a hesitant uncertainty I’d never really seen from him. He was so guarded, so angry and lonely, but as I watched him it seemed to strip away delicately to show a deep part of him. Spencer was vulnerable, and dreadfully alone. I was too.
“Yes,” I replied softly. “I want that too.”
The sweet smile that cracked open on his tired face made my heart swell. He seemed so relieved. Spencer kissed my forehead again before pulling me in close. We sat like that for a while, the slow trickling of the river taking away some of the emotions with it, flowing out to sea.
"Wildflower Honey," Spencer murmured quietly as we dozed later, tangled up under a blanket found in the back of my van and holding one another tightly as the day lazily passed us by. We didn't talk much, or about anything but some of the things we were interested in sexually.
He said it again, Wildflower Honey, in a soft whispering exhale as he fell asleep. He started to snore quietly, and I smiled against his fuzzy naked chest. We drifted to sleep in the evening heat.
Wildflower Honey.

Hey Holly! Seen any cool plants while on your trip?
There’s lotsa cool plants here. I talked about being excited about palm trees already, but I’m having fun seeing cacti and desert shrubs and the like existing right next to huge trees (redwoods? I think they’re redwoods but I’m not sure enough to ID confidently). There’s a lot of nice flowering bushes around here. The other day I saw some kind of cherry tree with very pretty pink petals. It’s very exciting to see plants that aren’t endemic to where I’m from!!!!!!!!!

Maianthemum, or Solomon’s Seal, growing next to a Coast Redwood in Eureka. A little over a year ago volunteers removed invasive ivy and holly from this area. It hasn’t come back mostly. And lots of native species are filling in the area; trillium, redwood violets, oxalis, thimbleberry, and salal (Gaultheria shallon)

What are Harry's siblings' magic wands made of? (wood and core). I know from the canon that wands are unique in nature and that each has its own character depending on the wood and the core, and that they choose a wizard with a certain character, abilities, etc.
Tumblr media
First of all thank you so much for this question !!
writing on the pic from the left to right, categories name wand length/wood/core:
Harry 11″/holly/phoenix feather
Juliet 10¼″/black walnut/dragon heartstring
Matilda 12″/silver lime/unicorn hair
Willow 10¾″/birch/occamy feather
Leo 10½″/redwood/unicorn hair
Please let me know if you’re curious about their wand choosing stories! I’ll gladly share them ;)
wand designs are a bit out of date especially Harry’s and Willow’s but I still admire this drawing

Twenty Four Days of Ficmas
Harry/Louis | Zayn/Liam | 12k | 24 Chapters
Twenty four days of One Direction Christmas ficlets! Get ready for large amounts of Christmas tooth-rotting fluff. Evles! Meet-cutes! Large amounts of hot chocolate, light dustings of snow, and several boys that may or may not make Santa's nice list!
Six Weeks
Harry/Louis | 20k | 7 Chapters
When Harry takes the afternoon shift at the cafe, he meets a boy who drinks a lot of tea and never remembers his umbrella.
Here's to Many More
Harry/Louis | Zayn/Liam | 8k
Harry Styles is nothing special. He grew up in the foster system and now, at eighteen, he's out on his own. He's just sort of… existing. That is until one day, when it's cold and raining and he takes a chance on a coffee shop instead of a forty minute bus ride during rush hour. There, he meets a boy who talks too much and draws friends to him like a magnet. Merry Christmas, here's to many more.
Home for the Holly Days
Harry/Louis | 2k
Louis’s participating in the Secret Santa exchange between all the Hogwarts professors stuck at school over the winter holidays, and the Sorting Hat may fancy itself a bit of a matchmaker.
Frankincense-ational
Harry/Louis | Zayn/Liam | Niall/Shawn | 31k | 25 Chapters
Do Not Falter (There's a Star Ahead)
Harry/Louis | 2k
It's Christmas Eve, and every single one of Louis' family members are crowded inside his little flat. Really, what more could he ask for on his birthday? The present he never knew he wanted - in the form of an omega from his past - might just make this his most memorable Christmas.
Forget the Silent Nights
Harry/Louis | Zayn/Liam | Niall/Shawn | 44k | 25 Chapters
For years afterward, everyone who lived at 404 E. Redwood referred to that Christmas as The Christmas we stole a baby. Technically, that wasn’t the strict truth, as Evie had already been five years old by the time she came to stay in their crowded (but loving) home. And technically they didn’t steal her. Either way, the last Christmas with the seven of them in that broken old house on Redwood all together was probably one of the most memorable holidays each of them had, what with the wedding and the the snowstorm and the raccoons in their attic… And the baby they stole, of course.
Unto You
Harry/Louis | 3k
Louis is a lamplighter celebrating the saturnalia season in his own way. Harry is heavily pregnant and new in the city. The holiday of Christmas is yet to be created.
Give A Little Sing To The Singles
Harry/Louis | Zayn/Liam | 31k | 25 Chapters
Harry Styles is an adult now, with a real adult job (and benefits! Whatever those are!). He spends his days at the copier. Copying things. That being said, no one told Harry that being an adult came with a confusingly chaotic boss, a copier machine that would be hell-bent on ruining his life, and a coworker so good looking that Harry might just have to quit. After all, Christmas is coming and if their office doesn’t win the decorating contest, Louis has threatened to break several laws and kneecaps in retaliation. Happy Christmas, here’s to many more.
You Don't Have To Be Lonely This Christmas
Harry/Louis | Zayn/Liam | 35k | 25 Chapters
Louis knew that it would happen sooner or later. He was struggling, and his roommates weren’t. It only made sense for them to offer his place in the house to someone else. But now, it’s the first of December, and he has less than a week to find somewhere cheap to stay. At least until after the holidays. Enter: an old friend with an old house and a suspiciously empty bed. Happy Christmas, here’s to many more.
All Your Mates Are Here
Harry/Louis | Zayn/Liam | Lewis/Niall | 36k | 25 Chapters
"The pack is… It's folding, Harry." Like every werewolf does when they get to a new town, Harry joined one of the many local packs when he started university. Now, three years into his program, he's hit with the news that his pack is giving up, going their separate ways. In the wake of the holidays, the three single wolves from the Majestic pack are pointed in the direction of a new pack to join; one that's got struggles of its own. A new pack, a new house, and two new roommates with personal space issues… Plus exams, of course. Happy Christmas, here's to many more.
Oh Little Town of BATHlehem
Harry/Louis | 2k
Louis Tomlinson needs a small pink bathtub. He needs it. His fucking family had forgotten to include him in the email chain for Doris for Christmas, with her very carefully thought out Christmas list, until every easy item was gone. Only when he asked Lottie if anyone else had heard from Doris yet, only then did they realise their mistake and forward the email chain to him. So, it’s either a small pink bathtub or an entire bouncy castle. And if he had the money for a bouncy castle that would be fine, but that fucker costs more than his monthly rent and he simply does not make that much working as an optometrist assistant.

Harry Potter Zodiac OC
Aries (Ailan Keegan)
Wand : ebony tree, rigid, dragon heartstring
Patronus : ram
House : Gryffindor
□ He is an active player in Quidditch. Infamous for 'ramming' players who stand in his way of goal. Got an outburst personality, and often time it leads to himself getting detention with Prof Snape. However, only his true friends knew how much passion he had for magic...and Quidditch.
Taurus (Tamerlane Lindwood)
Wand : holly, rigid, phoenix feather
Patronus : bull
House : Hufflepuff
■ A quiet boy who often got himself dragged away by magical beasts. So far, he had the highest count of getting rescued by professors this year. And the year before. Also, before that. He was the only few guys in the school who were able to pass magical creatures test without even trying.
Gemini (Gani Maverlyne)
Wand : dogwood, pliable, dragon heartstring
Patronus : raven
House : Slytherin
□ A two-faced student with a genuine curiosity for friendship. Despite being in a Slytherin, people often comment that he was more fit to be in Gryffindor, yet the Sorting Hat never misses a shot. Thanks to his excellent genius mind, Gemini got to get away from several rules. One of them was his habit of wearing a ridiculous looking wizard hat. Nobody knows why he kept wearing it.
Cancer (Sidney Simbrion)
Wand : chestnut, firm, unicorn hair
Patronus : bear
House : Ravenclaw
■ He is a sweet, kind, and emotional boy who often finds himself hiding his true feelings in the hope of pursuing firmer education. He signed himself for magic study to try to find the most effective spell to shut in his ever so ever flowing emotions.
Leo (Lillia Moderick)
Wand : apple wood, inflexible, dragon heartstring
Patronus : lion
House : Gryffindor
□ From a well-known family for producing talented wizards over the years, she was the first from Moderick direct line to be born as a girl. Just like how elegance she appeared, she could be manipulative and had great calculation in many situations.
Virgo (Velvet Gardenia)
Wand : walnut, firm, unicorn hair
Patronus : white elephant
House : Ravenclaw
■ A curious and sweet hearted girl. She has a natural gift in spelling and transformation, making her listed in the brightest witch of the year. Despite this, she was socially awkward and always having a hard time making new friends without being a stuttering mess.
Libra (Lucia Laxington)
Wand : cherry wood, supple, unicorn hair
Patronus : fox
House : Hufflepuff
□ An eccentric yet fair-to-mostly-all girl. Was well-known for her daydreaming gaze who seemed to never focus on anything. Yet quite sharp in her own way. She was among the fastest, the other being Virgo, to be the first to use spell and magic without voicing it.
Scorpio (Adrienne Hayton)
Wand : blackthorn, flexible, phoenix feather
Patronus : giant scorpion
House : Slytherin
■ Infamous for her stone and cold resting face, yet only the closest of her know how much (or at least, they tried to count) romantic novels she had hidden from the world. A shipper.
Sagittarius (Rene Malvick)
Wand : sycamore, supple, dragon heartstring
Patronus : horse
House : Gryffindor
□ An energetic and joyous boy. Was nicknamed as sunshine for several years in Hogwarts. A talented archer and Seeker of the Gryffindor Quidditch Team. Sometimes, he had a tough time understanding people emotionally, but he never stopped trying.
Capricorn (Craig Maize)
Wand : larch, firm, dragon heartstring
Patronus : goat
House : Hufflepuff
■ Someone who believes that ghost will haunt those who they deem as a coward, so he would always proclaimed he isn't a coward, despite being one. Putting aside his goofy personality, he got a strict obsession with schedules and time management, but will relent to those he adored.
Aquarius (Alcott Clinton)
Wand : redwood, flexible, dragon heartstring
Patronus : owl
House : Ravenclaw
□ A bright boy with creative way of thinking. An outgoing person with adoration for flying, despite the dislike of joining any Quidditch. Several times, he had rejected the offer to join Ravenclaw Quidditch Team. In addition, he had a unique tendency to run away every time he spots a Ravenclaw Quidditch player, new or not.
Pisces (Elise Ashton)
Wand : hazel, springy, unicorn hair
Patronus : orca
House : Hufflepuff
■ Soft hearted girl with love got swimming and aquatic animals. She joined Hufflepuff swimming team in the hope of being able to create a spell so she can forever breathe underwater without ever resurface for air. Occasionally, two or three fellow creatures will join her. Whether they were dead or not. This had scared Capricorn numerous times.

Sabbats: Lughnasadh Basics and Correspondences
Lughnasadh is one of the four Celtic Cross Quarter Festivals, also referred to as the fire festivals. It is the first of three harvest festivals held in the fall. As the grain and corn are gathered and preserved for the season, farmers celebrated the last of the long and warm days of summer.
The cross quarters are linked to an old farming calendar. This was a time when people were very close to the land and their lives were governed by the changing of the seasons and the need to grow enough food to survive. Modern Irish Gaelic calls the month of August Lúnasa which is the modern variation of Lughnasadh. The name originates from Lugh, a mythological hero to some, sun god to others.

I Wanted so Badly to be Brave | Spencer Reid
Smurph's Masterlist | Series Masterlist
Part 6 of Routine Maintenance
Warnings: mentions of BAU violence, bad phone flirting,
Summary: Spencer spends a night with the guys. You spend a morning with Emily.
Tumblr media
Spencer awkwardly rode in the back of the bouncy jeep next to rolled up tents and coolers. He didn't know what to say, and Rose, Rico, and Holly hardly spoke during the forty five minute drive to the Falls. Once they left the beachtown of Thunderbird, the road turned bumpy. They headed up one of the nearby mountains, disappearing into the thicket of redwoods.
Spencer spotted a few outlets, a cabin here or there, but there wasn’t much by way of civilization. The dirt road they drove on was one of the few indicators that this place had ever even been found by humans. The sun was shining, and even though his entire body was sore, Spencer found himself content with the scenery.

Holly reached the top of a hill and turned left, and the trees opened up to a clearing overlooking the beachside town of Thunderbird. The car barely parked before Spencer's feet took him out of the backseat, all the way to the edge of the cliff they were camping on.
Birds sang through the branches, skittering animals bouncing along trunks. Spencer stood in the shade watching the nature around him, the ocean in the distance. It was about noon, but up here it seemed like time would freeze in this moment of beauty.
A hand clapped down on his good shoulder, and Spencer turned to find Holly standing next to him. This close he seemed a giant, all coiled muscle and tanned skin, but his hand was gentle and so was his smile.
"Place isn't half bad, huh?"
"It's amazing," Spencer agreed, looking back to the scenery. He'd never seen anything like it. The colors, the sounds, the smells… this was a haven.
"I don't see Lionel," Rose called from the jeep. "Must be off fishing."
He and Rico pulled out a few tents and made their way to the center of the clearing. A small fire pit laid in a dirt ring, and Spencer could see the bare spots that people used to set up their tents and camps. He did his best to help, but with a busted arm and the fact that Spencer knew next to nothing about camping, he just did what he was told and stayed out of their way.
By the time they got everything set up, it was about two in the afternoon, and he was sweating his ass off. The thick straps of the brace held in heat and water, and soon enough his flannel was soaked. After watching him fiddle with it for a few minutes, Holly got up from his lawn chair on the other side of the pit.
"Just ask for help, man," he said, swatting Spencer's hand away. He smelled like sweat and the nervous cigarettes he'd chain smoked on the way up here, but again his grip was gentle. He eased Spencer's arm out of the sling, holding his elbow for him. He held it while Spencer shrugged out of his flannel and put it back on for him.
"Thanks," he muttered, still feeling weird and put out with them.
"You helped my Honey, man," Holly insisted as he grabbed his lawn chair and brought it over next to Spencer. He reached into the cooler next to him and pulled out a chilled bottle of Maker's Mark and an old coffee mug from Bean There and poured him a bit. "You've got a friend for life."
Spencer took it and nodded his thanks. He took a long sip and let the burning liquid hit the back of his throat. "Everyone's pretty protective of her around here."
"She's a good girl," Rose grunted. He held a beer loosely in his fingers while he tended to the fire. "Done a lot for this town."
"She's a good friend to have," Holly agreed with a sage nod of his head. "She'll do anything for anyone. She's been like that since she got here thirteen years ago."
"She doesn't like me very much."
"And yet she saved your ass pretty good," Rico pointed out. "Imagine what she'd do if she did like you."
"That's gotta be tiring for her," Spencer mused, taking another sip. "It's hard to take care of yourself when you're taking care of everyone else."
Holly, Rico, and Rose shared a look, then a nod. Rico took a long swig of his beer before leaning forward on his knees, seemingly thinking over Spencer's reply.
"What are you doing here, anyway?" he asked, but it had an edge to it.
Spencer shrugged, "Honey didn't make it seem like I had much of a choice."
Rose chuckled at that, but Rico’s jaw tensed. "I mean in Thunderbird. Why'd you come here?"
Spencer angled the cup toward Holly, who filled it for him. He took a sip, keeping his eyes on Rico and trying to read him. His face held a mix of jealousy and pure curiosity. Spencer didn't think he was trying to be a dick, but he couldn't be sure.
"I've been on the road for two years. I've been working my way through the States." Spencer cleared his throat and leaned back in his chair to seem more nonchalant than he felt. "I read a lot of travel blogs, and I like good coffee. I read Thunderbird had some of the best, and they weren't wrong."
"You came here for coffee?" Holly asked incredulously.
"I don't have much better to do, to be honest."
"What do you do for work? We don't have wireless internet here," Rico challenged, so Spencer just decided to give it to him. The last thing he needed was to get in another fight in the middle of the California wilderness.
"I'm retired FBI, almost twenty years," he replied coolly. "I have a good pension and savings, and had nothing keeping me in DC, so I left."
"Nothin'?" Rose asked lightly. "No girlfriend, wife? Family?"
"I never married, not much of a dater," Spencer shrugged, but it felt so pathetic to say out loud. It hurt him. "My mother passed away a few years ago and I don't talk to my father. I have two godsons, and a few friends, but other than that it's just me."
"I got married once," Holly offered, reaching out his beer to clink with Spencer's mug. He obliged. "She left me, though. I get bad nightmares."
Rico was still watching him warily, so Spencer pretended not to notice. He waved between them, "You two served together, right?"
Holly nodded with a smile, "Me, Rico, and Ernie served in the same unit. We all got taken out in the same firefight."
He lifted his left pant leg to reveal a prosthetic, "I left my leg in Bagram, Ernie left a part of his skull, and Rico left a few ribs."
Rico lifted his shirt to show a jagged scar under his diaphragm as proof, and Spencer nodded in respect. He mildly wondered if a metal plate in Ernesto’s head was what killed him in the lightning strike. At least he knew how military guys worked. Ask about battle wounds and they'll talk all night long.
"What about you?" Holly asked with a happy grin. "FBI guy, must have gotten a few of your own scars."
Spencer nodded, but he couldn't help but smile back. Holly was like a giant golden retriever, happy and handsome and bright. He rubbed the back of his neck, his middle finger rubbing along the scar he got in a firefight. He hadn't talked about this all in a long time.
"A few different times, yeah. Uhh, let's see," he murmured, trying to think of them all. "I got shot in the knee and needed a cane for over a year, once in the left arm, got shot in the neck once…"
"Jesus," Rose muttered, but it held respect instead of the usual worry he always got from his team. He nodded for him to continue, and for the first time in ever Spencer felt comfortable sharing some of this.
"I got beat once with a 2x4, that was fun." He left out the drug use that followed. "A few explosions. I caught on fire once. I was infected with anthrax one time and almost died… and I’ve been stabbed.”
“Good fuck, are you serious?” Rico asked. The anger in his face was replaced by respect and horror, and he figured that was as good as he was going to get with these guys.
“I delivered a baby once, so that kinda makes up for it all,” he confirmed, and he meant it.
“What the hell did you do in the FBI?”
“Uhh,” Spencer grunted, wincing a bit. He took a long sip from his cup to still his shaking at sharing this much. This was the most he’d talked in years, and since coming to Thunderbird he was talking way too much. “I profiled serial killers, arsonists, and bombers. You name it, I’ve arrested them.”
“So, you saw mostly kids and women, huh?” Rose asked solemnly, but it was more of a statement.
Spencer nodded, “We saved a lot of people, but honestly in the end… I couldn’t do it anymore. When I first started out, it didn’t affect me too badly. I just did the work and saw it as only that, but after a while… it follows you everywhere you go. Even when you sleep, and I’m sure you guys know what that’s like.”
They all nodded with him, and in that moment Spencer felt more understood than he had in a long time. These guys fought wars and saw endless bloodshed, and a few years ago Spencer never would have thought he had any kinship with men like that. It took until sitting there with them that he realized that his twenty years in the FBI took a toll on him like a war would have. He was constantly fighting, trying so hard to save everyone and losing himself in the process.
“They’ll put a gun in your hand and call you weak until you’re violent,” Rose said quietly, but it held a weight unlike anything Spencer had ever felt. “Don’t believe it. They’re hateful because they’re empty. You had a chance to break a cycle in your life, and it takes a real man to know when to walk away.”
Spencer didn't have anything good to say, so he just downed his drink. They spent a few hours sitting around the fire, drinking and talking about random things like sports and books. Spencer had picked up a love of baseball in the last few years, so he could at least contribute a little. All three were big readers, and Spencer found himself with a few books on his to-read list to pick up.
Holly cooked some hamburgers and hot dogs over the fire, and Spencer had two of each. He hadn't realized he hadn't eaten all day until the smell hit him. The bread was also a good buffer for the drinks they kept pouring him.
"Buncha boyos hangin' in the woods!" a bright Irish accent came from behind them. The sun was beginning to set, beautiful colors taking over the sky. They all turned toward the voice to see a small redheaded man clutching a bushel of fish on string climbing through the brush. He did a little jig as he approached and waved, "My kinda party!"
"Nice of you to join us, Lionel," Rose chuckled. "Have a good day?"
"No such fing as a bad day o' fishin', Rosey!" Lionel happily replied. "But I had a helluva fanny lickin' one!"
Spencer, Holly, and Rico groaned at that thought. Lionel wore a pair of rudders and fishing boots, a floppy hat perched on his head. He had a thick ginger beard that was braided down to his sternum, and a face full of piercings. He waved at Spencer as he deposited his fish into an errant cooler.
“Cracked axle hipster!” he declared happily. “Nice ta meetcha finally!”
Spencer tipped his mug to him, “You as well, Lionel. Thanks for getting me stuck here.”
“Hey if I ain’t do my job and it gets ya a coupla weeks vacation, I’m a happier man for it.”
After a while, Spencer found himself relaxing. For the last two years he'd been on edge, only a little less than when at the BAU. He'd had a few good nights over the years of fun, but this was different. He actually sort of felt like one of the boys, and he let himself out a little bit.
He and Holly talked a lot about baseball, and who they expected to win the upcoming world series, and surprisingly the man had a few insights on the stats of the games that Spencer hadn't thought about.
Rose was a big fan of Spanish history, and they talked about the places his family came from in the Dominican. Rico had a few of his own inputs in that conversation, and he seemed to warm up to Spencer after that.
Lionel had a lot to say about the English, and they all were big fans of soccer. Spencer admittedly didn't know much about it besides its history here and there, and by the end of the night he found himself a fan of a new sport.
They ended the night close to midnight, and as Spencer went to his tent he saw fireworks in the distance. The colors illuminated the night sky, brightly colored sparkles and flares that were actually beautiful to him now that he couldn't hear the explosions. Honey had been right, he hadn't heard a single one.
His tent was small, with a bright blue sleeping bag waiting for him inside. Holly took off his sling for him and said he'd help him with it in the morning, then said his goodbyes. He laid back on the blankets and watched the stars through the netting above him.
He'd had… a really good night. Such a good night that out of nowhere Spencer found himself tearing up. For a few hours, he hadn't thought about his past like he had before. He wasn't remembering the blood or carnage, instead he'd talked with these guys about people he'd helped and kids he'd brought home to their parents. They didn't worry over him or ask if he was okay. They just listened, and it was incredible.
He was beginning to doze when someone tapped on his tent. Spencer sat himself up and unzipped the door to find Rose kneeling down beside it.
"You got a call," he said, handing him a satellite phone. When he took it with a frown, Rose shrugged. "We bring it in case of emergencies."
"Thanks," he replied, and Rose simply walked away without another word. Spencer held the phone up to his ear and asked, "Uh, hello?"
"You lose the drinking contest?" Honey's playfully mean voice crackled through.
Spencer chuckled and laid back on the sleeping bag. "Funnily enough, nobody asked me to play."
"Oh, poor widdle man," she chided, but then her voice went a bit quiet. "You doing okay?"
Spencer nodded. He frowned, "Yeah. It was a good night, actually."
"Rico didn't start any trouble?"
"Nah. It turns out, if you get a few drinks in him around non-assholes, he’s a pretty cool guy.”
“Good… good,” she muttered, trailing off. Spencer could hear some rustling around her that sounded like bedsheets, and it delighted his tipsy brain to think of her calling him from her bed.
“Why are you calling me, Honey?” he asked softly, but he didn’t really want her to get off the phone. He’d had such a nice time, and he almost didn’t want it to end. Not yet, at least.
“Hmm? Oh.” Honey sucked in a deep breath that made his stomach churn. He wondered for a moment if Lonnie and Lloyd had been released, and she was scared. He was half ready to run down the mountain by foot before she spoke again. “When you were unconscious last night, I called one of your emergency contacts.”
Spencer’s jaw clenched tightly, his eyes tightening in a squint. “Who did you call?”
“A woman named Emily,” she murmured, but then her voice hurried through before he could speak again. “She said she wouldn't come unless you called and said you wanted her to. She said to have you call when you got back to the hotel, but obviously that didn’t happen…” “She’s in town, isn’t she?”
“Yeah…”
“Is she pissed?”
“Mmm, more like worried,” Honey sighed, but she chuckled a bit. “I got her a bit drunk and put her to bed.”
Spencer found himself laughing, “You really know how to welcome someone to town, huh?”
She laughed too, but it lacked heart. “Yeah, sorry about that. She was a pretty good time, though. I like her.”
“Well, if you like her then it makes everything better.”
He heard Honey swallow thickly. Some more rustling. “I just thought… You said you left for a reason. I thought you might want a heads up. Or, if you didn’t want to see her I could at least tell her to fuck off.”
“That… is surprisingly nice of you,” Spencer huffed. “Are you warming up to me because I saved you from an uncertain fate, Honey?”
“Ehh, more like, you look like a sad, doe-eyed puppy and I like dogs.”
“Dogs are cute,” Spencer mused with a cheeky grin. “Do you think I’m cute, Honey?”
She scoffed, but it was playful, “You know, people kick dogs.”
“You can kick me if you want, then.”
“Ooh, dirty,” she cooed flirtily. Spencer’s smile turned a bit ridiculous at the sound. “I learn more about you everyday, Mr. Buzzkill.”
They laughed together for a moment before sliding into charged silence. Spencer listened to her breathing on the other end and was sure she was doing the same. He heard her breathe in sharply, then curse to herself, so he waited for her to talk again.
"So, another thing about last night…"
"Yeah?"
"Keep in mind you were pretty out of it-."
"Don't go all shy on me now. Just spit it out."
Honey sighed in irritation, and he chuckled as she cursed under her breath again. "You were asking for someone, so when Emily said she wasn't coming I asked if they could instead."
Spencer waited with bated breath, but he knew who she was talking about without her needing to say it. "Maeve's dead. She's not coming."
"Right," she muttered, clearing her throat awkwardly. "Well, as someone with a dead partner myself, I thought you should know that I know and… I don't know, I'm sorry for your loss or some shit like that. You know what I'm saying."
Spencer nodded to himself, but Mattie May’s words came flooding out of his mouth before he could stop them, “She’s still with me. I’m sure Ernesto is too.” “Yeah, that’s kinda the problem,” she whispered. Spencer listened as she sat up and moved around, then heard a candy wrapper opening. “I’ll let you go.”
“Yeah, see you tomorrow.”
“See you.”
And then she was gone, leaving Spencer glaring up at the stars by himself.

The next morning I woke up to Emily at my doorstep with fresh coffee and a box of karouga, and I decided right then and there that I was in love with her.
Leaving the door open in case Spencer snuck in without us noticing, I took her up to my balcony and we sat watching the sunrise, talking about nothing. When there was enough light, I pointed toward the ridge the Falls rested on.
"He'll be coming from there."
Emily nodded, "Why do they call it the Falls?"
"Because more than one drunk has gone out of his tent for a midnight piss and fallen off the side of the cliff."
"Oh, that does wonders for my nerves. Thanks."
"Anytime," I replied with a chuckle. I loved mornings like this. The sun wasn't too hot, and the waves rushed in with the tide. A light breeze danced through my curtains, flicking the stray hairs of both our ponytails about.
"Are you staying again tonight or lighting out after you talk to Spencer?" I asked her, taking another sip of Collie’s phenomenal coffee.
Emily winced. "I think it'll depend on how that conversation goes."
"Fair enough."
Emily leaned back in her chair, her to-go cup of heaven perched between her fingers. This morning she wore another pair of leggings and a cable knit sweater, while I had on some shorts and an old Thunderbird tourist crewneck.
Nearly neon pink broke through the clouds as the sun rose steadily opposite of the beach, flooding us in its shine. Her dark eyes squinted devilishly at me as she took a cheeky sip from her cup and flashed me a lopsided grin.
"So, this Rico guy… you're not going to marry him. Why?"
I scoffed, "What are we, best friends now?"
"I heard some people talking at the liquor store, being nosy," she said, waving a hand nonchalantly. "I figured, when in Rome and all that."
I couldn't help but laugh. I enjoyed Emily's company. Michelle was the closest thing I had to a real girlfriend around here, but like me she'd been here for so long she didn't know anything else…and she was Rico’s sister, so it was harder to talk to her about this.
"He's a good guy, and I've known him for a long time. It was just sex, and as soon as he thought I might be pregnant it suddenly wasn't."
"I heard through the grapevine he was your husband's best friend. I'm sure it's hard for him to admit he loves his widow," she pointed out, and I had to agree.
"We've always loved each other. That's never been the problem," I sighed irritably. I scrubbed my hands over my face. "He'd be a great husband, just not for me."
Emily nodded sagely, "One of these days you're going to leave."
I nodded with her, "One of these days, yeah."
We sat in silence for a moment, thinking about our own things. My life was a fucking mess, and I didn't know how to fix it or myself.
My mind wandered back to the night Rico and I spread Ernie's ashes. The bay was cold, frigid air spreading goosebumps across our skin. Mattie May, Rose, and the rest of the mourners had long since gone, leaving both Rico and I alone on the beach.
I didn't know why we waited so long to spread them. Nine years was a long time to hold onto an urn, but I had to get them out of my apartment. I'd find myself staring at them, as if the ceramic would suddenly morph into my lost love and hold me through the night. It haunted me, and I couldn't stand to go more than a few hours without looking at it.
I clung to that thing more than a photograph, more than his ring around my neck, branding me as the sad lonely widow for everyone to see. It was Rico’s idea, so I dredged up Madelyn's as well and we set off toward the sea. I couldn't bring myself to get on the water, so we went to Wickes Road to send them off properly.
It was a secluded cliff overlooking the bay, named for the road that came up to it and ended in a sudden drop to the ocean. Ernie and I used to jump from it, holding one another's hand tightly until we hit the water. We'd surface with a gasping breath, feeling so alive and full of adrenaline and young love. It was our favorite spot.
But after, on the beach with Rico, I found myself pulling Ernie's old knife from my pocket. I stared at it for a long time, Rico watching me warily. I cut open my palm and held it out to him, and he did the same with his own army surplus blade. My blood wasn't as warm as I expected it, even in the cold.
He took my hand, and we swore ourselves protected from all the evil in the world. For the first time in nine years it felt that way. I watched him put on a brave face. I wanted so badly to be brave.
To this day, I don't really know how it happened. One minute we were clinging to one another on an old blanket on the wet beach, and the next we were a tangled ball of limbs. Rico held me so tightly I bruised purple and yellow, and he was beautiful. For the first time in years, I let go of everything, all my control. For the first time in years, I wasn't sitting terrified, waiting for an earthquake.
After, we lay tangled up on the blanket, still holding one another for dear life. Rico ran a soft hand over my cooling skin, and I cupped his face in my hands, begging.
Don't take me home.
We'd talked a lot over the last year about what we wanted from one another, setting our boundaries. It all boiled down to the same thing…comfort. It wasn't supposed to end this painfully. Comfort wasn't supposed to be the limbo we existed in for the rest of our lives.
The sounds of skidding gravel caught both our attention, pulling me out of my head. We leaned over the balcony railing to see Holly's jeep parked below. He threw me a wave, which I happily returned.
"Hey, what's he like in bed, anyways?" Emily asked as we gathered our things to go downstairs.
I flashed her a chagrined smile, "Oh, he's a fucking stallion."
We made our way downstairs, and suddenly I felt quite twitchy. I liked Emily, but I didn't know Spencer well enough to know how he would react. He seemed fine on the phone last night, but Emily said it had been two years since they'd seen one another…so anything could happen.
I held the door open for Emily as we stepped out of the Inn. The guys clambered slowly out of the jeep, clearly hung over and rumpled from a night of sleeping in tents. Spencer's hair stuck up in the back as he hopped out, and he rubbed his face roughly.
He stopped in his tracks as he saw Emily, his jaw tightening. She slowed too, and for a moment they just watched one another. As stoic as Spencer had been around me, his eyes were wide now and full of grief.
Emily didn't move until he did, taking a small step as he held out his good arm. Their chests hit one another's with an audible thump, their arms wrapping tightly around one another.
Spencer buried his face in her neck as I watched from afar, holding my coffee cup to my chest for the warmth it brought. He shuddered as he clung to her, and Emily put a soft hand on the back of his neck to hold him close.
The guys did their best to ignore it, but I couldn't tear my eyes away. It was hard to think of Spencer as anything but an angry drifter, and now his personhood shone through. He had people who cared about him, who he cared about. Maybe I'd judged him too early.
Spencer pulled away slowly, and Emily's hand slid over to caress his cheek as he locked eyes with her. They were watery and red rimmed, full of an agony that I knew all too well.
"Hey, you," she said softly with a smile.
Spencer chuckled, "Hey."
Emily sniffled hard and looked down at his clothes, gripping the lapels of his flannel and laughing. "I never thought I'd see you wearing something like this on purpose. And the beard!"
Spencer nodded with a small smile, "It's easier than suits on the road."
"You need a haircut," Emily decided. She ruffled his messy locks, and he pulled away with a laugh. I could see then the brother sister relationship they had, one with a long history and shared experiences.
Spencer wrapped an arm around her waist and led her to the door. He slowed as he spotted me and gave me a nod, but then kept going.
"You guys have fun?" I asked, but was met only with a round of hungover grunts from Rose and Holly. Rico watched me warily from the side of the jeep, and I decided enough was enough.
I made my way over and hugged him. It took a few shocked seconds before he hugged me back, but when he did he let out a relieved sigh.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
"Me too," I replied softly.
Rico’s thumb rubbed across my spine as he held me tightly. I knew eventually I was going to have to let him go, and he would too. We'd clung to one another for so long, lost in our pain and loss, but it was time to move on.
"You're my favorite person," he told me quietly. His voice wracked with grief, so brutal it could have brought me to my knees. "Don't leave my life, okay?"
"I won't," I promised. I meant it. Unlike Spencer, even if I left Thunderbird I wasn't going to lose this closeness. I refused to.
Rico pulled away and grabbed my hand, turning it over to look at the scar on my palm. He showed me his before clasping it with mine. We squeezed our fingers together tightly, saying goodbye to who we had been together the last year.
"I'll see you later, yeah?" he asked, flashing me one of his trademark cheeky grins.
"Count on it."
He saluted me, turning on his heel and heading toward the diner. On Mondays he helped Michelle behind the counter, and I smiled happily at Rico for the first time in weeks as we quietly ended our little rendezvous.
"I never liked you two together anyway," Rose's voice came suddenly from my side. I looked over and he shrugged, but I knew what he meant. "You want me to cook you some breakfast?"
"A happy face waffle?" I asked hopefully. Rose truly was the best father I'd ever had, and that's all he wanted to be.
He grumbled and nodded, throwing an arm over my shoulder.
"Anything for you, kid."
